Basics

    Acupressure is the stimulation of pressure points, which are in the same places as acupuncture points, by pressure and massage. Acupressure points lie on meridians along which chi energy moves. Blockages along these meridians can result in a number of health problems, including problems with organ function and emotional well-being. Blocked chi meridians can also be the cause of chronic pain and fatigue. By clearing these blockages, either through acupuncture or acupressure, traditional Chinese medicine can treat a variety of maladies.

Techniques

    There are two ways to manipulate pressure points. The first, pressing, is probably the best known. Pressure strengthens the chi at a particular point, while reduction weakens the chi.

    Pressing on the point reinforces a weakness at that point. Often, a short press, of less than 30 seconds, can determine if the correct point is being manipulated. However, for maximum effect, pressure of at least 30 seconds is required. Often, pressure on a point for up to two minutes is recommended.

    The second acupressure technique reduces, or weakens a pressure point. To reduce a point, rotate a finger over the point in a counterclockwise direction for between 30 seconds and two minutes.

Tools

    There are a number of tools available for acupressure. The most simple is a finger or knuckle. However, fingers can often be too thick to accurately reach the pressure point and fingers sometimes get tired. Although there are a number of good commercially produced tools available, the eraser on the end of a standard yellow pencil works very well. Any tool that is 3 to 4 mm thick works well.

Risks & Warnings

    Acupressure should not be used to treat serious injuries and should not be used to replace emergency care. Don't receive acupressure treatments within 20 minutes of performing heavy exercise, taking a bath, or eating a large meal. Don't use an acupressure point that is covered by a mole, wart or other skin lesion. Only accept acupressure treatment from a licensed practitioner if you are pregnant.

By using energy circulating throughout the body in channels called "meridians" that move in specific directions, acupressure helps "chi"---the Chinese term for the body's vital energy force---to "flow" without restriction. When the body's energy is flowing correctly, mind, body and spirit are brought into balance, providing a sense of well-being and purportedly helping alleviate specific health conditions. Acupressure is safe, effective and suitable for most people, provided the practitioner follows certain precautions.

Preparation

    Acupressure is acupuncture without needles, and works similarly to stimulate meridian points to bring about balance in the body. Illness results when chi is "blocked" or moving in the wrong direction. Learn the meridian system and work in the direct of the channel's flow, unless otherwise instructed. It's essential to apply these precautions to help safeguard against injury or worsening an existing illness or health issue.

    Loosen tight clothing, breathe deeply and stretch prior to your acupressure session, allowing at least an hour between eating and treatment. Drink plenty of water before---and especially after---a session.

Acupressure Basics

    Begin with a slight touch or pressure at the meridians or "acupoints" on the body. Work only one to three minutes at a time. Short, frequent sessions over the course of the day are better than longer, infrequent sessions. For acute conditions, or painful symptoms, repeat acupressure treatments at hourly intervals throughout the day, gradually decreasing to three times a day as your symptoms improve, then two to three times weekly.

Special Precautions

    Never apply acupressure directly to cuts, wounds, scars or bruises. Work around those sites, using the gentlest pressure along the acupressure points. Avoid working on someone under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Also, if the person is weak from illness or fatigued, apply light pressure until her strength is restored.

    Cut two fabric rectangles of equal size. For a smaller wrap, make the fabric rectangles 8 by 15 inches, for a larger wrap, cut them 10 by 20 inches. Cut one piece, for the neck wrap's lining, out of flannel or a similar fabric. Cut the second piece, for the outer cover, out of fleece.

    Fold the flannel in half, with the right side in, forming a long, skinny rectangle. Sew a seam along the long side and one of the short sides of the rectangle, leaving the other short side open. Turn the fabric tube right-side out.

    Repeat Step 2 with the fleece rectangle.

    Fill the flannel tube with uncooked rice, leaving 3 to 4 inches of space at the top.

    Add 6 to 8 drops of lavender oil to the rice.

    Sew the open side of the flannel tube closed.

Essential Oil Maceration Extraction Procedures

Maceration procedures utilize a variety of solvents to extract complex oils and fragrances from plant material. Traditional maceration procedures require whole or ground plant material to soak in a water, oil or alcohol-based solvent, inside a sealed glass container, at ambient temperature for days or weeks. Hundreds of plant species contain useful extractable oils, which may be used in aromatherapy, alternative medicine, cosmetics or foods.

Plant Material

    Plants produce and store different oils in different locations. Some useful plant oils occur in the roots, seeds, leaves, flower petals or bark of specific plants. The various parts of one plant may contain oils of drastically different chemical compositions. Sometimes, the root contains a useful oil, while the seed contains a poison. Always carefully separate the desired oil-producing part of a plant from the rest of the plant, and remove any soil or insect contaminants before beginning maceration procedures. Some maceration procedures call for whole plant parts, while others call for dried and crushed parts.

Maceration

    Maceration techniques vary depending on the location, composition and temperature stability of the extractable oil. Oils stored near the surface of the plant part may diffuse in a solvent more quickly than oils deep within the plant. Water soluble oils will diffuse in a water-based solvent, oil soluble oils in an oil-based solvent and alcohol soluble oils in an alcohol-based solvent. Heat sensitive plant oils degrade at elevated temperatures, but some oils will not diffuse in the solvent unless heated or boiled. Complete each maceration process exactly as described in a trusted recipe.

Pressing

    Maceration results in a lovely-scented debris-filled liquid. Many people remove the debris without specialized equipment by straining and pressing the liquid through layers of cheesecloth. Fold a large sheet of cheesecloth several times until light does not easily pass through it. Place the folded cheesecloth over a bowl, pour the liquid into the cheesecloth and pull up the edges of the cheesecloth into a sealed bundle. Gently squeeze the bundle with your hands to force the liquid through the cloth and into the bowl below.

Product

    The pressed and filtered liquid extract contains plant oils dissolved in solvent. Although not considered true purified and concentrated essential oil, many uses exist for this product including inclusion in aromatherapy applications, perfumes and massage oils. To create true essential oil, the extract requires further processing and purification to separate the plant oil from the solvent. Many essential oil recipes call for distillation, titration or chemical separation.

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a massage therapy that originated in Japan. It is based on the premise that energy channels called meridians run through the body. By using shiatsu (finger pressure), energy in the meridians is affected in a positive way. Shiatsu can be used to relieve stress and promote relaxation. It should not be administered to people with acute illnesses, high blood pressure, different kinds of chronic fatigue syndromes, heart conditions and cancer. Infused herbal oils can be used both internally and externally, and are relatively easy to make in your own home. In general, they are subtler than full strength essential oils, and can be used directly in topical applications.

Infused herbal oils can be used in making your own healing salves, balms, massage oils and even herbal pestos.

Here are the basic directions for making an infused herbal oil.

    Gather the herbs you wish to infuse. If harvesting them straight from your garden, be sure they are clean and dry to the touch (not covered in the morning dew, which can make them turn moldy). You can also used dried herbs, however, many herbalists feel using dried material will render an inferior product.

    Fill a clean jar with the plant material you've collected. In the picture above, individual rosemary and lavender leaves were used. Some prefer to chop their plant materials (leaves, flowers or roots).

    Label the jar with both the contents and the date.

    Add olive oil or another carrier oil (depending on the intended use - sweet almond,jojoba, grapeseed oil or any other plant-derived oil can be used. Be sure to fill the jar completely with oil, covering the top of the herbs or flowers, then seal tightly.

    Infused herbal oils made with olive oil are commonly used in both cooking or food preparation, as well as topical applications for the skin, hair and nails.

    Set your jar on a shelf, window sill or counter that is NOT in direct sunlight. Once a day, gently turn the jar upside down for a few seconds, then return it to a right side up position. Repeat this process for a minimum of two weeks. (Some feel up to six weeks is appropriate for infusion - you'll need to experiment to find the time frame that feels right for you.)

    Strain your oil using a cheesecloth or by adding a paper coffee filter to the mesh type strainer. Be sure to transfer only to clean and moisture free containers.

    You can now use your infused herbal oil in a variety of ways - a massage oil for cuticles or itchy scalp, bath oil, or even added to pasta or salad. The list of applications is quite extensive!

How to Make Your Own Dried Herb Infusion & Essential Oils

Dried herb infusions and essential oils make great gifts and can be used for a variety of purposes, ranging from culinary to cosmetic. An infusion is a preparation created by allowing herbs to sit in oil or water where they release their scent, taste and other properties. Essential oils contain the concentrated aroma or flavor of a plant. Pure essential oils can only be created through a steam or water distillation process, but you can easily create a less concentrated, homemade version using a method known as enfleurage.

    Pour one-quarter cup of boiling water over dried herbs of your choice and place into a jar. Cover the combination and allow it to steep for 15-20 minutes. The resulting mixture, which will resemble a tea, is a water-based infusion that can be used in the bath or for foot soaks.

    Place a pint of oil in a jar and then add one-half cup of your dried herbs. Stir well, cover, and allow it to sit in a sunny spot, ensuring you shake it every 12 hours or so.

    Make an infused oil by allowing your mixture to sit for 10 days and then pouring it into a bottle. Infused oils make great salad dressings or bread dips.

    Create an essential oil by allowing your mixture to sit in the sun for 48 hours and then positioning a piece of muslin or cheesecloth over the jar and straining your oil. Make sure you squeeze your material well after straining to collect every bit of the oil. Add more dried herbs to the jar and pour the oil over it. Repeat this enfleurage process six times or until the mixture has the aroma you want.

    Speed up the enfleurage process by placing your jar of essential oil into a saucepan of cold water. Heat the water until it becomes just mildly hot to the touch. Maintain this temperature for 10 minutes before removing the jar. Perform this routine daily for a week.

    Pour your finished oil into a dark glass bottle. You can use your homemade essential oil to perfume soap, baths or lotions.

Instructions for Acupuncture & Massage Trigger Points During Labor

Acupuncture and acupressure (the process of applying physical pressure to the body's pressure points, or trigger points) have been found to be quite useful for many different conditions, including assisting a pregnant woman during labor. According to Acupuncture.Rhizome.net, there are six acupressure points that are used primarily for women in labor. Acupuncture should only be performed by a licensed clinician, but acupressure on trigger points can be used by many people as long as it is used with discretion at the appropriate time.

Trigger Point 1

    The first trigger point, called the Jianjing GB-21 in traditional Chinese acupressure, can be used to stimulate contractions during the first and second stages of labor. At the beginning of each contraction, pressure can be applied at the midpoint between the top of the shoulder and the base of the neck, where the shoulder muscle is the highest. This area will be more sensitive than areas around it.

Trigger Point 2

    The second trigger point can be used if you want to help the baby to descend in the first stage of labor. This area is between the outer edge of the Achilles tendon and the tip of the outer ankle bone. Grip the pregnant womans ankle and press down in that area with your thumb.

Trigger Point 3

    The trigger point in the hand can release natural pain killing endorphins in the body. The pregnant woman an grip a small comb with the teeth pointing down into the creases of the hand where the fingers meet the palm. This can be used during a contraction with as much pressure as they feel necessary.

Trigger Point 4

    The Sanyinjiao SP-6 point can help the cervix to dilate. This point is four finger widths above the inner ankle bone, on the inside of the shin. The area will be more tender in the correct spot than the surrounding area. You can apply firm pressure for about one minute on one leg, followed by the same procedure on the other leg 20 to 30 minutes later. This should be continued in an alternating pattern until labor is established and the contractions are strong and regular. Only press on this point during labor and not at any other time during pregnancy.

Trigger Point 5

    The Yongquan KID-1 point is used to add a calming effect at any point during labor. This point is at the of the bottom of the foot, a third of the way down from the toes where there is a depression in the sole. An inwards and upwards pressure towards the toe is best.

Trigger Point 5

    The Hegu li-4 Point is used for general pain relief or assistance in regulating contractions. This trigger point is the fleshy area between the thumb and finger where the bones meet and is sensitive, with a dull ache, when you press down on it. This area should never be pressed during pregnancy except during labor because of its strong effects on contracting the uterus.

Trigger Point 6

    Level from the top of the buttock crease, about two thirds of the way from the crease to the hip bone, there is a tender pressure point. If you support your hands on the womans hip bone, you can apply pressure during a contraction as she enters transition.

Tips

    Make sure to use extreme discretion with the use of these points during pregnancy. Remember to apply pressure with the knuckle, thumb, or elbow, making sure to use force from your torso to avoid fatiguing yourself. Ask for feedback from the woman, adjusting pressure and location accordingly. Apply effleurage on the shoulders, upper and lower back, and even the buttocks. Petrissage involves gently grabbing the muscle and lifting it before releasing it. Place your fingers together and use your thumb and the middle of your fingers to gently lift the skin and then release it. Use petrissage on all areas of the body including the shoulders, arms, back and legs. The friction technique involves using the thumb and fingertips to rub the thickest area of the muscles. Firmly push your fingers and thumbs into the muscles and use small, circular motions to stimulate the deep layers of the muscles. Tapotement is when the hands are used to make chopping, beating or tapping strokes along the muscles. Place your fingers together and hold your hand vertically so that your pinky finger and the side of your palm is flat against the body. Move your hand up and down (e.g., like a karate chop) in different directions. Beating consists of lightly "smacking" the body, and tapping consists of tapping certain muscles with your fingers. For the vibration technique, press the fingers firmly onto a specific muscle and "shake" the muscle for a few seconds before releasing.

Natural Remedy for Infant Sinus Congestion

Infants can only breathe through the nose for the first few months of life. If there is sinus congestion, it will make feeding and sleep difficult. Congestion is usually because of swelling in the lining membranes of the nose. Reduce the swelling to allow the infant to breathe easier. The American College of Chest Physicians does not advise the use of over-the-counter decongestants and other cold medications for children 14 years and younger. Let it cool and put it in a jar with a lid and store in the refrigerator. It will keep for two months in the refrigerator. For a child less than two years, leave out the honey because there is a microorganism in honey that can make infants ill. Use brown rice syrup, barley and organic fruit syrups as substitutions. Give 1 tsp. every 4 hours for a child of 50 pounds or under.

    Sew up three sides of the fabric with a needle and thread or sewing machine to create the aromatherapy neck wrap. Leave one end of the fabric open to add the filling later.

Vitamins and Supplements

    Some alternative medicine practitioners recommend vitamin C to stop the progression of the virus. The dosage is very high at five doses of 2,000 mg each.
