Tea Tree Oil vs. Triclosan

Tea tree oil and triclosan are two ingredients used in hand soaps and other cosmetic, personal care and household products for their antimicrobial properties.

Chemistry

    Tea tree oil is the essential oil derived from the Australian tea tree, or Melaleuca alternifolia. Like all essential oils, it is a complex mix of natural, plant-created chemicals.

    Triclosan is a synthetic compound. It belongs to a group of chemicals known as chlorinated aromatics.

Uses

    Tea tree oil is used in aromatherapy and natural products for its antibiotic, antifungal and antiviral properties. It can be used undiluted on the skin, mixed with carrier oils or included in toothpastes, soaps, cleansers or other products.

    Triclosan is used as an antimicrobial in a variety of commercial products such as toothpaste and soap. It is the active ingredient of most antibiotic hand soaps. It is also used as a material preservative in mattresses, plastics, textiles and other solid products.

Regulation

    Tea tree oil is not regulated, unless it is listed as organic. In this case, it should follow the USDA's organic guidelines.

    Triclosan is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), depending on its use. As an ingredient in personal and household products, it falls under the FDA. As a material preservative, it falls under the EPA.

Efficacy

    According to studies published this year, one in the Journal of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery and one in the Journal of Microbiological Methods, tea tree oil has been proven effective against MRSA (a virus), Candida (a yeast), and Legionella (a bacteria).

    According to the EPA, triclosan kills bacteria, fungi and mold at higher concentrations, as in soap. At lower concentrations, as in plastics, it stops bacteria, fungi and mold from multiplying.

Safety

    Applied topically, tea tree oil may cause allergic reaction or irritation in people who are sensitive to it. It is a natural plant oil and poses no threat to the environment.

    Triclosan is considered a pesticide by the EPA. The European Union classifies it as an irritant to humans and a danger to the environment. The Environment Working Group's "Skin Deep" database states that it may cause endocrine disruption in humans. Use of triclosan in cosmetics is restricted in Canada, as it accumulates in wildlife and is toxic to aquatic life.

Restless legs syndrome is a neurological disorder that affects an estimated 12 million people worldwide. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the incidence may be somewhat higher in females and most patients with severe cases are diagnosed during middle age. Older patients tend to face more severe symptoms than younger adults and children.

Symptoms

    The common symptoms associated with restless legs syndrome (RLS) include a strong urge to move your legs when sitting or lying down and strange leg sensations described as creeping, crawling or tugging. Involuntary leg movements and jerking often occur. People with restless legs syndrome often can achieve temporary relief from these feelings only when moving their legs or walking.

Causes

    According to the Mayo Clinic, restless legs syndrome may be caused by several factors. Heredity is thought to be responsible for one-third of the cases, as many members of the same family are often affected. Other possible causes include pregnancy, menopause and other hormonal changes. Iron deficiency has been observed in many patients with the condition and there is a possible link between restless legs syndrome and kidney failure. Stress is a factor in both the development of the condition and the exacerbation of symptoms.

Acupuncture

    Originating in China, acupuncture has been used to treat medical conditions and physical ailments for thousands of years. The principal theory states that acupuncture can release trapped energy within the body--energy that is responsible for creating disease--by inserting needles along the meridian points to balance vital energy. Sessions generally last between 20 and 30 minutes. Depending on the ailment being treated, you may need anywhere from six to 12 sessions.

Acupuncture for RLS

    Acupuncture is especially successful in treating stress-related disorders. By releasing tension and unblocking stagnant energy, acupuncture induces relaxation and an overall feeling of calm. Heat Source

Retort

Product and Byproduct

    At the end of the distillation process, you will have two substances in your separator. Your base product is the essential oil which you set out to make. The byproduct of the distillation process is called a hydrosol, which is also often valuable in aromatherapy applications.

Ovulation pain is the pelvic pain that some women experience during ovulation. How to Relieve Ovulation Pain With Acupressure

    Sit in a comfortable position or lie down, close your eyes and breathe deeply as you massage each of the pressure points.

    Find the CV6 pressure point, which is positioned one to two inches below the belly button. Apply firm deep strokes of pressure into the abdomen. There will be pain at first, but the pain will eventually start to ease up. Continue applying this pressure for about one minute, or until the site develops a numb feeling.

    Find the B48 pressure point that is centered in the middle of each of the buttock muscles. Start with the left buttock and apply firm and deep strokes of pressure upward toward the top of the body. Continue applying this pressure for about one minute, or until the site develops a numb feeling. Repeat the firm deep pressure on the other buttock, again for about one minute.

    Find the ST36 pressure point on the front of the left leg. The best way to find this point is to feel around the front side of your leg, right below the knee, for a slight impression. At this spot, you should apply the same firm, deep pressure going in a downward motion toward your foot. This point should be stroked for about a minute. Repeat this motion in the same spot on the other leg.

    Find the P6 pressure point by feeling on the inside of the left leg, about two to three inches above the bone on the inner part of the ankle. Start by applying the deep firm strokes of pressure this time in an upward motion toward the knee of that leg, continuing for about one minute. Repeat this same motion on the inside of the other leg.

    Find the Liv3 pressure point which is located on the top of the foot, in the meaty, webbed part between the big toe and the second toe. Start with the left foot by applying deep firm strokes of pressure in an upward direction toward the ankle of the foot. Continue this motion for about a minute, then repeat on the right foot.

    Each pressure point should be stroked with firm, deep pressure for about one minute. Most will experience some pain at first, but the pain should ease up after a while. The sites should be stroked until there is a numbed feeling at that spot.

Far Infrared Sauna

    This type of sauna uses Far Infrared Rays (FIR) and came into use in 1950, the same time that electric saunas were being developed. Tips to Relieve Nausea From Chemotherapy

One common, unpleasant side effect of undergoing chemotherapy is nausea. Sometimes this nausea can be so severe that it can incapacitate patients to the point where they refuse to continue with their treatment. So knowing several different options for relieving nausea is important in ensuring successful chemotherapy.

Herbal Teas

    Both black horehound and German chamomile are herbs that have the potential to reduce nausea caused by chemotherapy since they each help relax the intestinal area. Try making tea by combining 1 tsp. of either of these herbs with one cup of boiling water. In particular, German chamomile has an anti-inflammatory and relaxing effect that is so gentle it can be used on a child.

    Ginger is another good herb used for making tea to relieve nausea and vomiting. To make ginger tea, simmer one fresh, chopped ginger root in a cup of water for 15 minutes. Since it can be strong, take ginger tea with some food or sip it very slowly from a tsp.

    The best acupressure point for lessening nausea is the back of the jaw. Push the vertical part just below the ear forward, extending your lower jaw as if you have an underbite. When you feel a twinging ache, hold that position gently for a few minutes.

    More powerful than acupressure, acupuncture can effectively relieve nausea caused from chemotherapy. Make sure you tell your practitioner you are undergoing chemotherapy treatment. Many insurance companies are now covering acupuncture treatment for the relief of nausea and vomiting.

Other Options

    To overcome chemotherapy-caused nausea, doctors use a number of anti-nausea drugs. Medications known as antiemetics can control the stimulating of the vomit center. Two anti-nausea drugs are Zofran or Kytril.

    Dandelion root also can be helpful in strengthening the liver and other organs in order to reduce the severity of vomiting. You can either roast, dry or grind dandelion root to prepare as you would coffee, or you can add dandelion leaves to salads.

    Try aromatherapy, color or music therapy, homeopathy, qigong, guided imagery, Sea Bands, hypnosis, hypnotherapy, suggestion, or biofeedback. The power of suggestion has been found effective for many problems, including involuntary responses from chemotherapy like nausea.

    Another technique to combat nausea is to try to relax and breathe deeply and slowly. Avoid odors such as smoke, perfume and cooking aromas. Eat small meals all day instead of three large one to prevent your stomach from getting too full. Stay away from fried fatty foods as well as spicy ones. You can also settle the stomach by drinking clear liquids.

    As you can see, there are many tips and strategies to help relieve nausea caused from chemotherapy treatments. Make sure that if you do experience nausea and vomiting you discuss this problem with your doctor so you can decide on what treatment options might work best for you.

It is just below the little finger, not all the way down into your wrist area. Pressing this area may also help your neck pain and aid in relaxation and easing of stress.

Point for a Stiff Neck

    For a stiff neck, use a point on the back of the hand, between the bones just below the knuckles of the first and middle finger. You can stimulate this point if you have slept on your neck in a funny way, resulting in restricted movement.

Cervical dysplasia occurs when abnormal cervical cells develop on the cervix's surface.
