The rice in the bag absorbs moisture from the air, staying either hot or cold for long periods of time. Simply heat the rice bags in the microwave for 1 to 3 minutes, or keep in the freezer so it is ready to use. You should not thaw a frozen rice bag in the microwave, however. It is recommended that you have two aromatherapy rice bags: one for cold use and one for hot. Aromatherapy rice bags can be made into any shape, but the most common is a square shape. Assemble your supplies before beginning the project; you can easily make several rice bags in 1 hour.

    Fold fabric in half and cut the desired shape through both layers of fabric. A good size is about 10 inches by 14 inches.

The expression "like oil and water" is used to describe things or people that are simply repellent for a reason: oil and water, frankly, don't mix. However, this doesn't mean there aren't a few workarounds for this chemical dilemma. If you have massage, aromatherapy or essential oils, you can use water or water-based lubricants to make them more water-dispersive. Oils, however, are not water soluble.

    Make an emulsion. An emulsion is a mixture of two liquids that cannot be blended, such as oil and water. Fill a clean and dry glass container with a small amount of room-temperature water, preferably distilled or purified. Begin with about one fluid ounce of water. Add one to three drops of aromatherapy/massage/essential oil to the water and blend vigorously with a whisk. The essential oil will continue to be suspended in the water as long as the emulsion is occasionally agitated. The oil and water will separate if left to settle but can be emulsified once again simply by stirring. Dab a small amount of the emulsion onto pressure points for a quick and additive-free perfume.

    Blend massage oils or essential oils into unscented, water-based personal lubricant to make a massage oil that's much easier to wash off. For a body massage covering a large expanse of skin, squeeze a tube of unscented personal lubricant, such as KY Jelly, into a clean and dry class container. Add a few drops of essential or massage oil, one to three drops at a time, and mix the two together with a glass stirrer or slim spoon until the lubricant is as strongly scented as you want it to be. The lubricant will suspend the scented oil more easily than water, and the resulting mixture can be warmed in a microwave to make it appropriate for personal massage.

    Wash off the scented lubricant or emulsion with soap and water. Because of the presence of the oil, neither solution will be entirely removed with water alone. For completely water-soluble scent solutions, mix alcohol-based scents and perfumes with personal lubricant. The physical chemistry of essential oils, and other oils used in massage and aromatherapy mean that they cannot be totally dissolved in water.

L14, or "Hoku" point, is an acupressure point for pain management, relieving aches and pains anywhere on your body (See Resources below). Acupressure massage at the L14 point, located between the thumb and index finger, is commonly used for back pain relief, toothaches, headaches among other aches and pains. This natural pain relief works by unblocking energy at one spot on your body - the L14 acupoint - so as to relieve pain at another spot, such as an aching tooth or lower back. Acupressure massage at the L14 (Hoku point), can be done in a few simple steps.

    Locate the Hoku Point on your hand.

    Locate the Hoku Point on your hand. To do this, gently press the thumb against the index finger. This will cause the flesh between the two fingers to mound. The L14 (Hoku Point) is at the top of that mound.

    Spread the thumb and index finger to form a "V." Using the thumb and index finger of the other hand, apply pressure to the Hoku Point (L14), which is now behind the webbing between the two fingers.

    Use the grasping thumb to squeeze close to the bone attached to the index finger, angling the pressure underneath this bone, so as to find the most sensitive spot.

    Apply firm pressure to this spot for at least a minute. At the same time, move the joint that is closest to the area that hurts. For example, move your neck for a headache.

    Repeat the steps using your other hand. Repeat as needed till the pain dissipates.

    See a doctor immediately if you experience severe or persistent pain. This may be symptom of a more serious underlying condition that cannot be treated with acupressure massage.

Through either method, the chemical reactions caused by the essential oils affect emotions, such as stress, joy and love.

    To promote feelings of tranquility, Dr. Mindell recommends broom, catnip, lily or rue. To counteract insomnia, try bergamot, celery, chamomile, hops or marjoram. You can combat fatigue and depression with benzoin, bergamot mint, camphor, caraway, carnation, cinnamon, ginger, lemon, lime, nutmeg, orange or saffron. You can increase sex drive and feelings of love with cardamom, daffodil, deer tongue, jasmine, sandalwood, vanilla and ylang ylang.

How to use them

    For inhaling essential oils, put one or two drops into a bowl of steaming water, place a towel over your head and around the bowl to catch the steam. Breathe in until you achieve the desired effect. Or, put a few drops in an aromatherapy diffuser and place it on a table in your vicinity; this allows for longer enjoyment of the aroma.

    For massage, mix three or four drops with 1 tbsp. of unscented carrier oil, such as sweet almond, apricot or avocado, and massage into the skin. Cinnamon, nutmeg and many types of citrus oils may cause skin irritation and are better used for inhalation.

    Essential oils can be safely used in cooking, with the key being moderation.

Auriculotherapy History

Auriculotherapy is a type of acupuncture that focuses on the visible and external part of the ear. It is a fairly common practice in this form of alternative medicine that is believed to treat pain, internal disorders, and certain addictions. The addictions treated include smoking, gambling and drinking. The history of this practice is relatively short.

Ancient Roots

    Although modern auriculotherapy is rather recent, it has its roots in acupuncture techniques from China in 500 BC. Ear treatments were part of this, but they were done in a different fashion than today.

Modern Birth

    Patients of Dr. Paul Nogier, a French neurologist, said their scatia pain was helped by eastern ear treatments; they began research into the topic and developed modern day auriculotherapy.

Introduction into China

    Nogier's auriculotherapy procedures were introduced into China in 1958. While it was praised during the country's "Cultural Revolution" of the time, it was gradually worked into China's own medicinal techniques. No credit today is given to Nogier as a result.

Further Research

    Further research into the procedure was done by western scientists. Dr. Terry Oleson backed up auriculotherapy by identifying certain points on the ear and their relationships with other parts of the body.

Auriculotherapy Today

    Modern auriculotherapy is practiced across the world, although it has not been validated by the scientific community as a whole. Still, patients do consider it to work, with head pain treated by working on the lower ear lobe. Foot pain is treated with acupuncture along the top of the ear. Those are just a couple of examples.

    Little evidence exists to suggest that this works any better than a placebo.

Proper Placement of Anti-Nausea Wristbands

    Anti-nausea wristbands are intended to be worn with the small plastic piece over the inside of the wrist, between the two tendons. Wristbands generally come with instructions for placing the band correctly over the pressure point.

    To find the proper placement, place your left forearm in front of you with the palm facing you. The wristband manufacturer Travelband suggests placing the index, middle and ring fingers of your right hand on the inside of your wrist, with the outside edge of the ring finger against the first crease of the wrist. The area just below the index finger is where the pressure point is located. Place the wristband over the hand and adjust so that the plastic piece is placed in that spot, between the two tendons. Check the wristband periodically while wearing to ensure that it remains in place.

    Use essential oils together: Along with the essential oils listed above, there are several other oils which can be combined to ease any affliction a person may have. Take for instance a person wants to feel refreshed or uplifted. If this is the case, all anybody needs to do is combine one part rose, three parts sandalwood and one part sweet orange or bergamot. If on the other hand, a person wants to change their feeling of bitterness, they can combine one part chamomile, one part bergamot and one part helichysum. There are probably many recipes in which a person can create to ease any depression or uneasy feeling. All it takes is some research and time to create a recipe that works for what ailment is afflicting you.

    Take time alone to heal depression. Being able to use the above essential oils, or others like them, for relieving depression is great. Now, it is time to find ways in which to use these essential oils. One way in which to use these oils is by drawing a bath. Adding any one of the above recipes to a warm bath two to three times a week is very helpful for depression. Another way to relive depression is my simply inhaling these essential oils. The oils can be individually dropped on a cotton ball or napkin, then inhaled for however long a person sees fit. Inhaling essential oils can be done more than once a week or when needed.

Essential Oil Recipes for Coughs

An essential oil is a pure oil extracted from a plant, such as flowers, bark or fruit. Essential oils have many purposes, including making perfumes and medicines. There are recipes you can make using certain essential oils for a specific purpose, in this case for relieving coughs. Experiment with a few recipes and see what works best for you.

Massage Oil

    Add 2 drops of lavender oil and 2 drops of eucalyptus oil into a plain, "carrier" or base oil, such as sweet almond or jojoba oil. Mix and massage this oil onto your throat and chest. This recipe is good for several applications.

    Make another massage oil for coughs. In 1 tsp. of jojoba oil as a base, add 3 drops of eucalyptus oil, 1 drop of pine oil and 2 drops of thyme oil. Mix and massage this mixture onto the chest and back.

Cough Syrup

    In a half glass of warm water, add 2 drops of lemon essential oil, 2 drops of eucalyptus oil and 3 tbsp. of honey. Stir and slowly sip 1 tsp. of this cough syrup.

Steam Inhalation

    After boiling a pot of water, remove it and add 2 drops of lavender and 2 drops of eucalyptus oil. Cover your head and pot with a towel immediately and inhale the steam for three minutes with your eyes closed.

    If you don't have lavender essential oil, use just 2 drops of eucalyptus oil in your boiling hot water for steam inhalation.

    For a stubborn cough, add 4 drops of eucalyptus oil, 4 drops of tea tree oil and 1 tbsp. of Vicks Vapor Rub into a pot of steaming hot water. Cover your head and pot with the towel and for five to 10 minutes. Breathe deeply and slowly through your nose. Exhale through your mouth. Phlegm and mucus will be loosened in your lungs.

Vaporizer

    On the stove, put several drops of eucalyptus oil in a pan on low heat. Particles will fill the room and help reduce your coughing. If you have a vaporizer, add a few drops into it.

Room Spray

    In a spray bottle, add 1 cup of chamomile tea, 3 drops of lavender oil and 3 drops of eucalyptus oil. Shake and mix well. Spray the room every four hours and before going to sleep.

Warnings

    Keep essential oils away from children.

    Consult with your doctor before using essential oils if you're pregnant or have medical problems.

    Keep your eyes closed when bent over steaming, hot essential oil recipes containing these or any oils.

    Do not use essential oils undiluted on your skin. Always add oils to a base oil, such as jojoba oil.

    Avoid using mineral oil as a base when making a massage oil for coughs. Mineral oil doesn't absorb into your skin, and clogs your pores and decreases your lung function.

Skin Disorders

    Evening primrose oil (EPO) is use topically to treat a number of skin disorders. Most of the disorders the oil is noted for healing involve redness and itchy--eczema, dermatitis, rashes associated with allergic reactions and abrasions. The healing benefits are ascribed to the high levels of gamma linolenic acid (GLA) present in the seed, according to Medline Plus, a website published by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. GLA is an essential omega-6 fatty acid that is not produced by the body.

Pre-menstrual Syndrome

    EPO has long been known for relieving the symptoms of PMS, particularly breast tenderness or pain. The U.S. National Library of Medicine's Medline Plus website states "... the available information does not allow recommendation for or against the use of primrose oil in (breast pain) condition." However the website does make reference to European countries using EPO for breast pain. EPO may also alleviate the bloating associated with PMS.

Diabetic Neuropathy

    Diabetic neuropathy is nerve damage associated with diabetes. The symptoms include numbness and tingling in the legs and feet. The condition may also cause a burning sensation or pain in the lower extremities. EPO may relieve some of the symptoms of diabetic neuropathy. The University of Maryland Medical Center lists EPO as possibly having a positive affect on Multiple Sclerosis, another disease that targets the nervous system.

A form of alternative medicine, aromatherapy uses essential oils and other scents to improve mood and health. Essential oils are typically derived from plants, flowers and herbs, and they can be used with a diffuser, or added to massage oils, room sprays or a hot bath. Essential oils are extremely concentrated and can fill a room with a beautiful fragrance when they are used with a diffuser. Diffusers come in a variety of styles, including lamp ring oil diffusers, reed diffusers and heated oil dish diffusers.

    Purchase essential oils at a natural food store, fragrance shop or online. Select scents that you typically enjoy, and that will help create the mood that you are trying to achieve. For example, peppermint and citrus scents are known to be uplifting, while lavender and chamomile are thought to encourage relaxation.

    Place 20 to 30 drops of each essential oil that you are choosing to combine in a dark glass bottle. If you choose fewer than four scents, you should use 40 to 50 drops of each scent. You can experiment with scents by placing a drop of each type of essential oil that you plan to use on a piece of paper before mixing a whole bottle to ensure that you like the resulting scent.
