Apply the mixture to a burn, and you will immediately feel soothing relief. Apply the mixture as the heat begins to return, and your burn will heal quickly.


    Make a natural, clear bandage to promote the healing of cuts, stop bleeding and reduce scabs. Separate the egg white from the yolk and peel away part of the thin egg skin from the shell. Place the skin over the cut and cover it with a thin layer of egg white. As the egg skin begins to dry and peel up at the edges, reapply the egg white.

There are three types of herpes infections. HSV-1 causes mild skin outbreaks that manifest as cold sores on the mouth and lips. Rarely, this form of herpes can appear on the genitals. HSV-2 is the more serious form and is known as genital herpes, though it can sometimes appear on the mouth. Lastly, herpes zoster is responsible for chicken pox and shingles.     According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, studies on the effectiveness of lysine have been mixed, but some have shown that it reduces recurring outbreaks of cold sores and, to a lesser extent, genital herpes. Also, lysine shortens the duration of the outbreak. Take 1,000 to 2,000 milligrams daily and/or increase consumption of foods like fish, chicken, eggs, and potatoes. People with high cholesterol, heart disease, or high blood levels of triglycerides should not use this supplement.

    A study led by M. Huleihel on propolis, which was published in a 2002 Israel Medical Association Journal, found that this resin made by bees kept both HSV-1 and 2 from multiplying. This information was used to test a propolis ointment against Zovirax, a commonly prescribed topical agent to treat herpes and those who use the propolis ointment experienced faster healing times.

    Zinc has also demonstrated ability to stop the virus. A study led by HR Godfrey that was published in a 2001 edition of Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine tested a zinc oxide cream against a placebo. Sores treated with zinc healed faster.

Herbal Treatments

    A study led by BK Vogler that was published in a 1999 edition of the British Journal of General Practice observed that aloe gel relieved symptoms of genital herpes in men. They experienced faster healing times than those using a placebo. It potentially has the same benefit for cold sores but it has not been studied.

    A six-month study of 93 people taking Siberian ginseng found that this herb effectively reduced the frequency, severity, and length of outbreaks. Do not use this herb if you have high blood pressure, sleep apnea, narcolepsy or are pregnant or nursing. This study was published in a 1999 edition of the European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology.

    Based on reviews of journal articles and other literature regarding natural medicine, the University of Maryland Medical Center also suggests the following herbal treatments for herpes.

    Lemon balm has been the subject of several studies and used topically, it can start to heal cold sores in as little as two days. A Swiss study compared rhubarb cream with Zovirax and observed they were equally effective. Peppermint oil has strong anti-viral properties and in test tubes, it was effective against the herpes virus.


    Hypnosis has shown positive results as a form of treatment for many conditions. A study led by PA Fox which was published in the International Journal of STD and AIDS tested hypnotherapy on those with genital herpes with positive results. Participants took part in a six-week training program; results included a 50 percent decrease in outbreaks, and improved mood.

Cilantro to Cleanse Body

Cilantro, which comes from the leafy part of the herb coriander, is often used in Indian, African, Italian and Middle Eastern cooking. Many use the herb to help discharge heavy metals from the body. You can add cilantro to salads, soups and pasta dishes, or eat it with fish. There are also several recipes for cilantro dishes specifically designed to help with chelation, which is the removal of metals.

    Heavy metal poisoning is caused by mercury, aluminum and lead. It can cause depression, allergies and learning problems as well as affect the memory and immune system.

    Research done by Dr. Yoshiaki Omura, who founded the International College of Acupuncture and Electro-Therapeutics and served as director of medical research at the Heart Disease Research Foundation, is most cited as the source for cilantro cleanses. Omura found that patients' urine had higher than normal levels of mercury after they ate a soup that contained a large amount of cilantro. He began experimenting and discovered that patients with mercury poisoning got better after eating cilantro.


    If you want to try chelation, you'll need to eat cilantro every day. Try eating two tablespoons of cilantro pesto each day for at least three weeks. It's also recommended that you take chlorella with the cilantro, as this will bind the mercury and help flush it from the system. You can try garlic for this also. You can also simply add fresh cilantro to your food each day. You can cook the cilantro into soup and pasta, add it to salads or use it as a topping for meat dishes.


    To make the cilantro pesto, you'll need four garlic cloves, 1/3 cup Brazil nuts, 1/3 cup sunflower seeds, 1/3 cup pumpkin seeds, 2 cups fresh cilantro, 2/3 cup flaxseed oil, four tablespoons lemon juice, two teaspoons dulse powder and sea salt. Process the cilantro and flaxseed oil in a blender until the cilantro is chopped. Add the garlic, nuts, seeds, dulse and lemon juice and blend until you have a paste. Add a pinch of salt and blend again.
    Eat two teaspoons of this each day for three weeks. Put the pesto on toast, baked potatoes and pasta.
    You can also drink your cilantro. Chop eight or more full teaspoons of cilantro and steep it in a quart of just boiled chicken broth or water for about 20 minutes. Don't use metal cookware to heat the broth. Sip this concoction during the day for two to three months for highly elevated mercury levels, according to Modern Herbalist.

Diet and Exercise

    A formula for facial oil that reduces broken capillaries can be made using several common herbs. Mix 1/2 oz. jojoba oil with 1/3 oz. rose hip seed oil in a container with several drops of borage oil and evening primrose oil. Add a couple drops of cypress oil, lemon oil and palmarosa oil to complete the formula. Apply this mixture to the areas of your face that have broken capillaries every evening before bed.

    For spider veins on your legs or other areas, mix 1-and-1/2 oz. sunflower oil with 1/4 oz. rose hip seed oil together in a container. Add 15 to 20 drops of borage oil, geranium oil and evening primrose oil, then several drops of lemon oil, cypress oil and palmarosa oil. Massage the oil gently over the affected areas of the body every day. Geranium oil may lower your blood sugar level so omit it from the formula if you are hypoglycemic. Taking additional vitamin A and C supplements will also help promote healthy skin and veins.

    Practise relaxing your muscles. Many people tense up as they sit in an airplane seat, which makes them more uncomfortable. Whenever you feel your muscles tensing, take control and relax them. This will help you feel more comfortable and in control.


    Visit an airport. Many airports offer tours of the site, which allow you to walk around as if you were about to travel, including checking in and waiting in the departure lounge. You will also be allowed to watch airplanes take off from a viewing gallery. This can help calm your nerves, as it will show you what to expect.


    Book a short flight. Pack some luggage and check in as normal. When you board the plane, talk to the air crew about your fears and ask to see the pilots. Most airlines will allow this before takeoff. The aircrew will check on you, so remember to calm yourself and remain relaxed, remembering that the flight will be over in no time.


    Distract yourself. Don't watch films or read books about plane crashes. Take things to distract you on the plane. This will stop your imagination from going into overdrive, making your fear seem rational. If this does happen, remind yourself that a fear of flying is an irrational fear.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, seasonal affective disorder (SAD) affects 15 million Americans each year. Understanding the type of light therapy, length of duration and how light therapy is used in the treatment of SAD will provide valuable information when seeking light therapy treatment.


    Seasonal affective disorder results when the production of chemicals in the brain is inhibited due to the lack of sunlight exposure. This can result in increased levels of melatonin and decreased levels of serotonin in the brain, resulting in seasonal depression.


    Light therapy is used to regulate melatonin and serotonin levels. For mild SAD symptoms, increasing time spent outdoors may help regulate hormone levels. For more severe symptoms, daily light therapy may be implemented.

Time Frame

    For milder symptoms of SAD, increasing time spent outdoors may be enough. For more persistent symptoms of SAD, 45 minutes per day with a maximum of 90 minutes per day of light therapy has been reported to regulate melatonin and serotonin levels. Improvement with depression is generally reported within two to three weeks.


    If improvement is not noticed with depression attributed to SAD, light therapy alone may not be enough. Antidepressants may also be prescribed to aid with neurotransmitter balance.


    When implementing light therapy for SAD, it is important to only use lights that filter out ultraviolet (UV) rays. Tanning beds are not recommended for the treatment of SAD. They do not filter out UV rays, which can be harmful to the eyes and can cause melanoma.

Pollen is the dust-sized, male seed of flowers. It collects on the hind legs of honeybees as they visit flowers and then taken from bees as they enter their hives through a wire mesh trap. Bee pollen is produced in high volume during the spring and fall seasons. It has been shown to contain more than 96 different nutrients and the perceived health benefits of bee pollen have made it a popular health-food item.     Drive the bees from the hive with a smoker.


    Slide the pollen trap from the bottom of each hive. Gather the bee pollen stored inside by tipping it out of the trap into a collection bucket. Slide the trap back in place.


    Take the pollen to a sanitary processing area. Using a ladle, scoop the bee pollen into airtight containers, sealing each container when it is filled. Place the filled containers in a refrigerator until ready to process.


    Place the pollen in drying pans on a table or rack in a sealed-off area. Using a dehumidifier, allow the pollen to dry without heat. It should be dry within an hour.


    Fill sterilized bottles with pollen, using a funnel. Seal the bottles until they are airtight. Attach labels on each bottle to list vital information such as the product name, bottling date, and expiration date.

What Are Leeches Important In?

A leech is a form of segmented worm. They swim in water and move across land. A sucker exists at each end of the leech's body. It does not have legs nor does it have gills or lungs for respiration. Several fine blood vessels located near the surface of the leech's body take oxygen in and give off carbon dioxide. Leeches not only feed off of blood, but they eat tadpoles, snails, and other small animals residing in ponds.

Medicinal Leech Therapy

    Post-surgery, the fresh blood containing oxygen from the lungs goes directly to the surgical area. The old blood then has an issue leaving the surgical area and getting back to the lungs and heart. The old blood causes the area to become cold and dark in color.

    Leeches are attached to the discolored area to suck out the old blood, allowing fresh blood to enter the area. The leeches can feed anywhere from 10 minutes up to an hour. They suck 1 to 2 teaspoons of blood during a feeding. Once the leeches are done feeding, they will fall off of the area. The leeches are not reused and are placed in a container of alcohol to die.

Teenagers ages 13 to 17 years can take between 1,350 and 1,500 mg three times a day. These should be taken in between meals on an empty stomach with a glass of water.

    Adults can take one 300 mg capsule up to three times a day. Fats in the diet are controversial and complicated. Saturated fat, found in animal fats, coconut oil and cod liver oil, was deemed harmful to health beginning in the 1950s.     The three most common saturated fats that humans eat are stearic acid, palmitic acid and lauric acid. Dr. Mary Enig notes that we need these three saturated fats for many important bodily functions, immune system health, hormone production and for energy.


    Saturated fats, according to an article by Enig and Sally Fallon, include fats that are highly stable, do not go rancid, and are usually solid at room temperature. Your body makes them from carbohydrates or you get them from animal sources or tropical oils such as coconut oil or palm oil. Stearic acid, one of the saturated fats, turns to oleic acid, which is the same fat that is in olive oil.


    The adrenal glands are two glands that sit on top of our kidneys and work in a complex symphony to produce the sex and steroid hormones. There are two sections to the adrenal glands. Chopped or minced garlic can be added to salad dressing to deliver flavor and punch. Finely chop garlic and whisk it with a basic vinegar and oil salad dressing, then drizzle over fresh lettuce and other vegetables.

    Garlic can also be used to season meat and seafood for that extra burst of flavor. It can also be combined with other herbs and spices (including cayenne, curry powder, turmeric and cumin) as a dry rub on poultry and fish. Garlic adds panache to marinades too---garlic-infused marinades can be used to season food. You can then choose to grill, bake or pan-fry your seasoned meat or seafood.

    Soups also do well with garlic added---vegetable soup, minestrone, lentil soup, even exotic soups like Tom Yam. What about stews? Most stews call for browning garlic together with onion to bring out the flavor of the other ingredients. Consider adding garlic to beef stew, seafood stew, curries and chili. And garlic bread, tapas, guacamole, dips, stir-fry dishes and spaghetti sauce would not taste quite the same without garlic.

How Best to Use Garlic?

    Although garlic can be toasted, roasted, grilled or browned, garlic retains the highest levels of allicin when eaten raw. In addition, crushing garlic before cooking yields better health benefits: This releases an enzyme, allinase, that facilitates the formation of allicin, which then breaks down into various compounds that can help detox your colon and entire digestive tract.
