Home Remedy for Poor Vision

Identifying loss of vision in the early stages can be vital in preventing further and more serious vision loss. Common signs include difficulty reading small print or seeing distant objects, or a loss of night vision. Less obvious signs include bloodshot eyes, swelling around the eyes, sensitivity to light, a white spot in the eye or frequent migraines or headaches.

Vision loss can be the result of injury to the eyes, birth defects or illnesses; however, most people experience vision loss because of improper food habits and frequent straining of the eyes, through reading or using computers.

Diet Changes

Vitamin A contains preformed retinoids and carotenoids, both of which promote healthy eyes and good vision. A well-rounded diet can improve poor vision dramatically.

Preformed retinoids can be found in food sources such as the kidneys or liver of animals. They include beef, eggs and low-fat dairy products. Carotenoids, such as beta-carotene, can be found in orange or dark-colored fruits and vegetables. Choose blueberries, apricots, carrots, sweet potatoes, broccoli, mangoes, pumpkin, kale, cantaloupe, spinach and papaya.

Reduce Strain

Strain can also cause vision to deteriorate, especially if your eyes are never given an opportunity to truly rest. Many people strain their eyes when reading, especially in dim areas, when watching television or when working on the computer for hours.

Consider improving the light source for your reading. Dim light forces your eyes to strain; therefore, adding a light, even if it's a small book light, can provide relief.

If you spend all day working at a computer, give your eyes a break every couple of hours. A small walk around the workspace will get you away from the screen and will help dramatically.

Eye Exercises

Just as the muscles throughout your body need exercise, so do your eyes. Eye exercises can strengthen your eye muscles, improve your vision naturally and prevent deteriorating vision in the future.

Using only your eyes--holding your head still--look up for a second, then down for a second. Close your eyes and allow them to relax. Repeat this exercise a few times a day to strengthen eye muscles and improve vision.

The Best Ways to Be Energized When Tired

The Best Ways to Be Energized When Tired

A busy, modern work life can be exhausting and often causes people to feel tired, even after a full night's sleep. Other causes of lethargy include focusing too long while studying, eating an unhealthy diet or having a condition such as depression. Signs of exhaustion include irritability, drowsiness, inability to focus, procrastination and feeling stressed. Fortunately, the best ways to be energized when tired are simple, and they don't involve drinking highly caffeinated beverages.

Instructions

    1

Take a "power nap." Go somewhere quiet, sit down and close your eyes, if possible. Clear all thoughts from your mind and focus on taking slow, deep breaths for 10 minutes. This process allows your body to relax, which may help re-energize you.

    2

Listen to high energy or classical music. According to Harvard Medical School neuroscientist Mark Tramo, music stimulates different emotional centers of the brain. This stimulation improves both your mood and your energy levels. Listening to music lowers blood pressure and is thought to increase the efficiency of oxygen consumption of the heart.

    3

Take a brisk walk for 30 minutes. Physical exercise gets your blood pumping and makes your brain release endorphins, which improve your overall mood and help relax the body. Endorphins are neurotransmitters, or chemicals released in the brain, that help transmit signals throughout the nervous system.

    4

Eat a balanced diet that contains fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and yogurt. Foods that contain whole grains leave you feeling fuller longer, which sustains your energy levels.

    5

Drink up to eight 8-ounce glasses of water or decaffeinated beverages every day. Your exhaustion may be caused by dehydration.

How to Make Pheromones

How to Make Pheromones

Pheromones have received a lot of attention in recent years. The word pheromone is made from two Greek words: "pherein," which means to transport and "hormone," which means to stimulate. Pheromones are chemical compounds secreted by human beings and other living creatures that send a subconscious signal to others. Sex pheromones have been proven to send signals that can make you more attractive to the opposite sex. Here we will explain how you can make your own pheromones so you can be and feel more attractive.

Instructions

    1

Make celery part of your diet. Celery contains androtestosterone, which according to the website Shapefit is a powerful hormone that is released through sweat and attracts the opposite sex. By eating celery, your sweat will contain a higher level of pheromones.

    2

Place some gauze pads under your armpits to collect your sweat. If you are a female, you should do this during your period since this is the time when most pheromones are produced. You can also place the gauze pads in other areas where you can collect sweat, like your elbows or behind your knees.

    3

Place the gauze pads that collected your sweat in your perfume bottle so your own pheromones can enhance the attraction effects of your perfume. You can also put them inside a small glass bottle filled with your favorite essential oil.

    4

Dab a little of your pheromone enhanced perfume or essential oil on your wrists, neck, temples, the area behind the knees and your ankles.

How to Build a Royal Rife Machine

How to Build a Royal Rife Machine

The Royal Rife machine is an invention by American scientist Royal Rife. This machine is famous in natural health circles for its supposed ability to use sound frequencies to treat and reportedly cure almost any known disease or health condition. Rife believed that nearly all adverse health conditions are caused by viruses, and that these viruses can be destroyed by certain frequencies of sound, depending on the condition being treated. As of November 2010, a Rife machine can cost between $350 and $2,700. However, you can build one on your own for a fraction of the cost.

Instructions

Put Together the Rife Machine

    1

Drill a 1/8-inch hole in the center of each of the two brass plates.

    2

Cut the speaker wire into two pieces of 12 feet each.

    3

Strip the casing from the two pieces of speaker wire using the wire stripper. Leave 1/2-inch of bare wire at the end of each piece of wire.

    4

Put one end of one of the bared wires into one of the crimp ring connectors, making sure it fits snugly and securely.

    5

Secure the crimp ring connector to one of the drilled brass plates using one of the pop rivets.

    6

Separate the two bared strands at the end of the speaker wire. Solder the first strand to the tip of the amplifier jack, then solder the second strand to the jack itself.

    7

Repeat steps two through six with the second 12 foot strand of wire.

Activate the Rife Frequency Software Kit

    8

Plug the amplifier into the associated jack.

    9

Open up the software kit and remove the stereo output line that comes with it. Plug one end of this line into the headphone port on your computer. Plug the other end of the line into the auxiliary output port on the amplifier.

    10

Attach one end of the power adapter into the amplifier and plug the other end into a wall outlet.

    11

Install the Rife software kit on your Windows-based computer (the software will not work with a Mac).

Use the Rife Machine

    12

Place one brass plate under one of your feet. Place the other brass plate on any nearby flat non-metal surface and put the palm of your hand on top of the plate.

    13

Run the Rife software on your computer.

    14

Turn up the volume on your computer until you can feel a slight tingling in the foot and hand that are on the brass plates.

    15

Use the software to set the sound frequency to one that will address whatever health condition you're treating with the Rife machine. The software kit comes with a list of frequencies for hundreds of health conditions.

    16

Sit still until the frequency plays all the way through to the end, then rest for a few minutes before getting up. Repeat the treatment process daily until you feel better.

How to Get Rid of Spider Veins (Varicose Veins)

Want to eliminate those unsightly spider veins. Spider veins aka varicose veins can be the object of much embarrassment. However, there are many forms of spider vein treatments available today. Here are a few tips on how to remove and prevent spider veins.

Instructions

    1

Exercise regularly. Blood circulation is an easy varicose vein treatment. These veins are caused by clogged blood veins which become enlarged. Frequent exercise will increase your blood flow through your veins and prevent future blockages.

    2

Avoid crossing your legs. When you cross your legs you restrict blood flow through your veins. A pinched vein can cause blood to sit stationary in a vein and form a spider vein over time.

    3

Eat a diet high in vitamin C. Vitamin C has been proven to promote vein health and performance. Oranges are a great source of vitamin C as well as certain melons. Taking a vitamin C supplement daily is also a good idea.

    4

If your spider veins are excessive, think about getting Scierotherapy. Scierotherapy is a medical procedure where they inject your varicose veins with a formula that closes the vein. After a few weeks the vein slowly starts to die and disappear.

How to Massage Swollen Legs Following Surgery

Following surgery, the doctor usually tells the patient to get up and walk as soon as possible. For some, this is no problem. When the surgery is in the legs, however, there can be complications, not the least of which are swelling, stiffness, soreness and aches. Massage is a good way to help restore mobility to the lower extremities; it is also a good way to reduce swelling and improve the skin's moisture levels. But you should make sure the stitches are not irritated.

Instructions

Prepare for the Massage

    1

Make sure you have the doctor's permission to perform massage on the legs. There may be special considerations to avoid any complications, such as blood clots or cancerous tissues present within the leg. Massage, even gentle massage, could break off a blood clot or cancerous cell and cause a life-threatening embolism or spread of the cancer. When either of these are present, massage should never be performed except by a trained, licensed massage therapist and only under a doctor's supervision. If the doctor says massage is okay, proceed.

    2

Use pillows to elevate the legs above the heart. Elevating the legs helps facilitate the drainage of excess fluid that may have built up in the legs, which if left unchecked can turn into a condition known as edema. Since massage helps move fluid through the body, elevating the legs makes the work of the person giving the massage that much easier.

    3

Apply a light coat of vitamin E oil to the legs and feet. This not only allows the hands to glide easily across the skin of the legs, it helps nourish and moisturize the skin.

Perform a Circulatory Massage

    4

Expose the leg and, starting at the knee, lightly rub the hands towards the hips. Use sweeping strokes, but be careful not to use too much pressure. After several strokes on the top of the leg, move your hands along the sides of the leg and repeat the strokes. If you can, run your hands along the backs of the legs.
After completing the upper leg, repeat the strokes on the lower legs, always working upwards, towards the heart.

    5

Elevate the limbs individually, and repeat the massage strokes. The elevation lets gravity do some of the work for you, but you still need to use your hands to ensure that any excess fluid is gently moved out of the leg. Again, always work towards the heart.

    6

If the swelling persists, you may have to perform a very light lymphatic-drainage massage. For this, you need a very light touch, literally the weight of a nickel. Use small, slow, circular movements starting just above the knee and moving upwards, towards the hips. This opens up the lymphatic capillaries, allowing the excess fluid to enter and be removed easily.

Peroxide & Ear Infections

Peroxide & Ear Infections

A 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution is often used to treat external wounds and infections. This is a common medical procedure. Hydrogen peroxide oxidizes when it comes into contact with skin and debris. This is the property that allows hydrogen peroxide to be such a strong disinfectant. When treating infections of the ear, there are different issues to take into consideration. The ear and the eardrum are comprised of skin that is sensitive and fragile.

Directions for Use

Use a 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution when considering this product for the healing of ear-related infections. One to 2 tsp. in each ear is the proper amount. The solution will need to be held in the ear for 15 to 20 minutes or when the fizzing stops. When used in the proper manner, hydrogen peroxide will rid your ears of parasites and bacterium that do not belong.

Benefits of Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide causes an effervescence reaction which removes debris and tissues from areas that you normally would not be able to reach. Peroxide does not have a high penetration rate and only cleans locally. This solution is used to clean inside and outside the ear canal.

Sometimes people get foreign bodies trapped in the ears. This problem can be a wide variety of debris, such as dirt and bugs. Hydrogen peroxide will bubble up and remove this from the ear canal, preventing infection.

Hydrogen peroxide is also an efficient way to remove earwax. This is important when it comes to treating external ear infections.

When Peroxide is Used

Using hydrogen peroxide will depend on the severity of the ear infection being treated.
If a pustule or boil has developed, a doctor will need to drain the pocketed infection and pus. At this point, it is safe to use hydrogen peroxide to remove dead tissues and debris from the infected site. This is again done by the oxidation properties of the hydrogen peroxide solution.

Inner Ear Infections

There are times when an infection is too close to the eardrum. When this is the case or when a middle ear infection is involved, antibiotics will be needed to cure the infection. It is always wise to consult your physician before beginning peroxide treatment in the ears.

Warning

Hydrogen peroxide should only be used for outer ear infection if the ear drum is not perforated. If the infection is too close to the eardrum, it can cause deafness.

When using hydrogen peroxide to clear wax, it can cause ear drum pain if the ear drum is perforated. If the peroxide enters the mastoid cavity and middle ear, it can cause mastoiditis.

Sage can be burned in your home to cleanse it of a haunting or unwanted spirit activity.

Physical and Emotional Advantages

Burning sage is useful in cleansing oneself from psychic and emotional trauma. Much like clearing a space, the smoke from sage can be fanned around your body with the intent to remove emotional blocks in the energy field.

Healing and Chakra Balancing

People who do Reiki and other forms of energy healing can fan the sage smoke around their client's body to balance the energy centers, otherwise known as Chakras.

Relaxation

The smell of burning sage can increase relaxation and aid in deeper meditation.

Natural Health Cures for Diabetes

People with diabetes have very high levels of sugar in their blood. Their bodies cannot properly utilize insulin, a substance responsible for converting starches, sugars, and other forms of food energy. This leads to high levels of glucose building up in the body, which can cause serious damage if left untreated. Many natural substances can help manage diabetes.

Note that diabetes is a serious condition. It is best to consult with a healthcare provider to determine a safe and effective treatment plan.

Herbal Treatments

Salacia oblonga has a long history of use in Indian medicine to regulate the increase of blood sugar after a meal. According to Dr. Andrew Weil, a study published in a 2005 issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that the substance controlled the levels of blood sugar after eating and lowered insulin levels. It is important to note that the study was not specifically related to diabetes and none of the participants had the condition. It is best to discuss this treatment with a doctor.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the following herbs have demonstrated ability to manage diabetes. Consult with a physician to determine appropriate dosages.

Bitter melon has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It lowers levels of glucose serum. Fenugreek seeds regulate glucose levels. Gymnema was studied as a complement to traditional diabetes medications and it appears to increase their effectiveness. This herb can affect the ability to taste sweet foods. Cinnamon reduces the level of glucose, blood sugar, and the amount of fat and cholesterol in the blood. American ginseng reduces blood sugar levels. In particular, it can lower the typical spike in blood sugar after consuming a meal, if it is taken before or during the meal.

Supplements

Chromium helps the body utilize insulin more efficiently by transferring it from the bloodstream into the cells for energy production. It also reduces the level of blood glucose. Do not exceed 200 micrograms daily. Chromium is found naturally in brewer's yeast, cheese, meat, fish, fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Research indicates a strong link between low magnesium levels and type 2 diabetes. Taking magnesium supplements or eating foods rich in this mineral such as whole grains, leafy greens, bananas, legumes, nuts, and seeds, can promote healthy blood glucose levels. Discuss magnesium supplementation with your doctor to determine dosage.

Vanadium, a trace mineral, acts in a similar fashion as insulin. It increases insulin sensitivity, restores blood glucose to normal levels, and can reduce insulin doses. Talk to a healthcare provider to determine an appropriate dosage.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants protect the body from free radicals, which are damaging molecules that can cause a host of problems in the body. People with diabetes tend to have high levels of free radicals and low levels of antioxidants. Supplementing with these beneficial substances can reduce symptoms of diabetes. Discuss appropriate dosages with your doctor. Beneficial antioxidants include selenium, zinc, vitamin C, beta-carotenes, and coenzyme Q10. Conenzyme Q10 also protects the heart; people with diabetes are at increased risk for heart conditions.

Neuropathy Treatments

Many people with diabetes suffer from neuropathy, a painful condition that causes nerve damage. Free radicals, which are present in higher amounts in people with diabetes, negatively impact the nerves and blood vessels. Alpha-lipoic acid and gamma-linolenic acid (most abundant in evening primrose oil) can address this condition. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, several studies indicate acupuncture can offer relief from this painful condition.

Mind/Body Medicine

Stress can negatively impact people with diabetes. Designing a plan to manage stress is strongly advised. Natural methods like tai chi, yoga, meditation, and positive visualization can help. Biofeedback, which involves training yourself to become more aware of and control your body's response to stress, can positively influence blood sugar levels. Not only can these things serve as tools to manage stress, they can provide motivation to make better choices to help control the condition.

Natural Herbs for Cold Prevention and Remedies

Colds are a common illness. They are caused by a viral infection and produce symptoms like sneezing, runny and stuffy nose, cough, sore throat, fatigue and headache. Several herbal therapies might help prevent and treat colds. Herbal therapies are best used in conjunction with other natural methods. This holistic strategy addresses all aspects of your health. You should talk with your doctor or health care provider experienced in using herbal medicine before using these supplements. Alternative medicine expert Dr. Andrew Weil and the University of Maryland Medical Center offer several suggestions.

Using Herbs for Prevention

If you want to take herbs to prevent a cold, ideally, you should begin taking them at least several weeks before the cold and flu season starts, which is around November. This will give them time to build up your immunity. Consistency is important for maximum benefit. The following herbs can help prevent colds; ask an experienced health care provider about appropriate dosages. They include echinacea, garlic, astragalus, andrographis and ginseng. Do not use echinacea if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking any immunosuppressant drugs. Do not use garlic if you take blood-thinning medications or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Using Herbs for Treatment

The following herbs can help treat symptoms of a cold like sneezing, mucus, congestion, coughing and sore throat and possibly reduce the length of the cold. Again, consult with an experienced practitioner to determine dosages. Elderberry eases congestion; use the commercial preparation Sambucol. Eucalyptus can ease cough and congestion. It is available in lozenges, ointments, teas and cough syrups. You can also add a few drops to steaming water to ease congestion. Licorice, marshmallow and slippery elm can ease sore throat. Peppermint is a natural decongestant and thins mucus.

Do not use elderberry or licorice if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Licorice is also inappropriate if you take blood-thinning medication, have high blood pressure or heart disease.

Complementing Herbal Therapy

Whether you are using herbs to treat or prevent a cold, you should do other things to complement them. You can also keep your immune system strong by getting regular exercise, eating a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, avoiding or limiting inflammatory foods that weaken immunity like saturated fats from animal products, white flour and sugar, managing stress and getting plenty of sleep.

How to Get Rid of Warts Using Home Remedies

How to Get Rid of Warts Using Home Remedies

A wart is a benign skin tumor that results from a viral infection of the human papilloma virus (HPV). Typically, warts are not painful and are often of more cosmetic rather than medical concern for many people. While there are a number of commercial preparations are available on the market, you can treat your warts using natural home remedies.

Instructions

    1

Use duct tape as a home remedy for warts on the hand and the foot. Cut a section of duct tape that is large enough to cover the infected wart area. Place it over the wart, applying it snuggly. Leave it on for six to seven days. After this period, remove the duct tape and soak the infected area for 10 minutes in warm water. Dry the wart and repeat the process for up to two months until the wart is healed.

    2

Break open a vitamin A capsule (25,000 IU) and rub some of the liquid onto the wart. Apply this once a day until the wart heals. This remedy is strictly for external use only: ingesting large doses of Vitamin A is toxic.

    3

Crush a vitamin C supplement tablet with the back of a spoon. Moisten it with a few drops of water, to form a paste. Apply this mixture directly onto the wart. Cover the area with a bandage and leave this on for at least 24 hours. The high acidic content of the vitamin C mixture is believed to kill the papilloma virus that causes the infection.

    4

Treat genital warts using tea tree oil. Dampen a cotton ball with some of this essential oil and apply it directly to the genital wart, dabbing gently. Do this once every day for up to 10 days. The oil may cause a mild tingling sensation.

    5

Rub the inner side of a banana peel onto your wart until the peel turns dark in color. Slice a section of banana peel that is large enough to cover the area of the wart infection. Place it over the wart with the inner side of the peel against your skin. Cover it with a bandage and leave it in place for at least 5 days.

How to Get Rid of Blemishes Using Home Remedies

How to Get Rid of Blemishes Using Home Remedies

Most teenagers go through difficult years with acne and blemishes on their face, but it is not limited to teenagers. Adults can have acne and blemish problems for many years. Blemishes are typically caused by oil-clogged pores and stress. Blemishes are ugly and those who suffer from them want to get rid of them as fast and as easily as they can. It is not always easy to get rid of blemishes. But, there are different things a person with blemishes can do to get rid of them naturally.

Instructions

    1

Rub calamine lotion on your face where the blemish is. Calamine lotion absorbs excess oil in the skin and helps ges rid of the blemish. Use calamine lotion as often as needed.

    2

Take one ice cube and wrap it in a washcloth or dish towel. Hold the wrapped ice cube to the blemish for about five minutes and the ice cube will cool the blemish and decrease inflammation. Use an ice cube as soon as you feel or see a blemish coming on to help reduce the redness and swelling.

    3

Use a good sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher on your skin whenever you go outside. The sun can make blemishes worse and can interfere with certain acne medications and treatments.

    4

Mix together a little bit of honey, lemon and a pinch of turmeric. Apply this mixture to the skin regularly. This combination can be very effective if used properly and regularly.

    5

Add sandalwood paste to water and apply it to your skin where the blemishes are. Sandalwood is good for keeping your skin clear and free of acne or blemishes. Sandalwood also soothes a painful pimple or boil on the skin.

    6

Put three strawberries in a bowl and smash them with a fork. Pour enough vinegar in the bowl to make a paste with the strawberries. Spread this strawberry and vinegar paste onto the problem area of your skin and keep it on overnight. Use a towel in between your face and your pillow to protect your linens. Wash the paste off in the morning.

Use this paste every night. Make it a habit to use it even after the blemishes are gone, to keep the blemishes away and keep your skin clear.

Signs of Blood Clots in the Legs

The ability of the blood to clot is an important aspect of the body's ability to heal itself. But sometimes blood clots occur inside the body. Internal blood clots in the legs can lead to heart attacks, strokes and death. Knowing the warning signs is the best way to prevent a clot in your leg from turning fatal.

Swelling

When a blood clot forms in the leg, the leg begins to swell. The first thing you probably will notice is that one leg is larger than the other, due to water retention in the area. Swelling can be caused by other issues, however, and is not a definite sign of a clot.

Increased Pain

A blood clot may start with a small, barely noticeable pain in your leg. Over time, the pain may increase, eventually to the point it can no longer be ignored. The pain probably will be localized. If you feel localized pain in your leg that increases in this way, see a doctor immediately.

Warmth and Redness

A blood clot in the leg will cause the area to become very warm to the touch. The entire area also may turn red. If this happens, the blood clot is getting worse and you should go to the nearest emergency room immediately.

Cramps

Another sign of a blood clot is leg cramps. Cramps can turn into intense, throbbing pain and be felt in the calf muscle. The cramps may intensify when you bend your foot. Leg cramps combined with other warning signs are a serious symptom that should be checked as soon as possible.

Discoloration

In a severe blood clot, discoloration may occur. The area that is red, hot and painful may start to lose some of its coloring. The skin may begin to look white or blue. Blood clots can be fatal. Never ignore symptoms.

Urine Therapy for Lyme Disease

Urine Therapy for Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection transmitted to humans via tick bites. Symptoms of Lyme disease include rash, fever, fatigue, chills, swollen lymph nodes and stiff neck. Lyme disease is typically treated with prescription antibiotics such as doxycycline and amoxicillin. However, some alternative medicine practitioners use a more controversial, all-natural treatment for Lyme disease called urine therapy, or uropathy. Uropathy is the use of human urine for medicinal purposes.

Science

There is some legitimate science behind uropathy for Lyme disease.

Urine therapy practitioners advocate drinking urine, injecting urine and washing with urine as alternative cures for Lyme disease. Most of us are conditioned to perceive urine as merely a waste product of the human body and are repulsed by the idea of using urine as a healing substance. While scientists have not yet given uropathy a unanimous thumbs up for Lyme disease treatment, many doctors do agree that urine is a sterile fluid that contains healing enzymes, vitamins, antibodies, amino acids, minerals, carbonates, carbohydrates and hormones. It is important to note, however, that there is no definitive scientific research that supports urine therapy as an effective treatment for Lyme disease.

Application

Some people drink urine plain to treat Lyme disease.

Urine can be consumed, injected or used topically as a treatment for Lyme disease. Some people drink urine plain and others add urine to smoothies to mask its taste and odor. Urine injections are highly controversial because traditional doctors generally do not administer them, their efficacy for Lyme disease is scientifically unproven, and injections are more likely to result in infection than other urine applications. Topical urine application for Lyme disease involves washing and massaging the rash-affected area with fresh urine. The urea in urine is supposed to be particularly helpful for alleviating rash symptoms of Lyme disease when applied topically.

Warning

Antibiotics are generally considered to be the most effective treatment for Lyme disease.

Although urine therapy may improve some Lyme disease symptoms, it is still important to consult with a doctor if you suspect you have Lyme disease. Urine therapy is unlikely to alleviate your Lyme disease symptoms efficiently, and traditional antibiotics are proven to be the most effective treatment option for Lyme disease. If you are determined to try uropathy as a cure for Lyme disease, remember that topical use of urine on rash-affected areas can be combined with traditional oral antibiotics to ensure effective treatment of Lyme disease.

Natural Herbs for GERD

GERD or gastroesophageal disease is a common condition caused by chronic acid reflux. It can cause damage to the esophagus, and it can be painful. Although many conventional treatments for this problem exist, many prefer treating GERD naturally. Fortunately, many natural remedies for GERD can be just as effective as the prescription and over-the-counter remedies sold in most pharmacies. Better yet, in many cases natural remedies cause fewer side effects.

Chicory or Chamomile Tea

Chicory root can be a very helpful digestive aid for people who have GERD. Chicory tea has been known to relieve acid reflux for many people, and it also helps prevent indigestion, a common problem that many people with GERD experience. Chamomile tea is also effective for relieving the pain of GERD because it helps relax the stomach.

Lavender

Lavender is also great for treating GERD naturally. Lavender helps reduce stomach acid. Many people who have GERD take a lavender supplement in the evening to prevent stomach acid before they go to sleep.

Fennel

Fennel has many benefits for the stomach, so it is a natural choice for treating GERD. Fennel helps improve digestion of food, which in turn helps relieve many of the symptoms of GERD. For instance, many people drink fennel tea to reduce gas, cramps and bloating. To use fennel to relieve GERD, drink a cup before eating.

Licorice

Licorice calms the stomach. It helps reduce inflammation of the stomach lining and esophagus that is caused by GERD. Licorice also helps reduce the amount of heartburn and acid reflux you experience. It helps stimulate the body's natural defense mechanisms and is a natural anti-inflammatory. To use a licorice supplement to treat GERD make sure you buy the DGL form of licorice.

Ginger

Ginger is one of the most common natural supplements for stomach problems. Ginger relaxes the muscles in the esophagus and it calms the digestive tract. Ginger also improves digestion, which in turn helps reduce the likelihood of heartburn or reflux because food and acid are not lingering in the stomach. Drink ginger tea or take a ginger supplement about 20 minutes before eating to treat GERD.

How to Get Dry Mouth Relief (Xerostomia) from Herbal Remedies

How to Get Dry Mouth Relief (Xerostomia) from Herbal Remedies

You can get dry mouth relief (xerostomia) from a number of herbal remedies. Most of these dry mouth remedies involve stimulating the secretion of saliva (See Resource 1 below). This eHow highlights a few herbs that can be used to relieve drymouth.

Instructions

    1

Chew some fennel seeds. This helps provide dry mouth relief by stimulating saliva production and also controls the bad breath that is associated with drymouth (xerostomia).

    2

Put 4 to 5 whole cloves in your mouth, and suck on them to boost saliva secretion. Keep sucking until they lose their effectiveness to deliver dry mouth relief and to get rid of bad breath.

    3

Place a few thin slices of ginseng in a cup of boiling water and let steep for about 10 minutes. Sip about three cups of this ginseng tea throughout the day. Add a teaspoon of honey if you find it to be bitter.

    4

Sprinkle some red pepper flakes over food or add red pepper powder into drinks. Capsaicin, the compound that gives pepper its "hotness", stimulates not only salivation but also other watery discharges such as sweat and tears.

    5

Sip a cup of echinacea tea. Echinacea contains a compound called echinacein, which can help to stimulate saliva production.
**IMPORTANT: Echinacea also stimulates the immune system and should not be taken if your dry mouth is due to Sjgren's syndrome, a condition in some rheumatoid arthritis patients.

How to Give Myself a Facial

How to Give Myself a Facial

Spa facials can be quite expensive, especially if you take advantage of every possible technique available. You can do the same quality facial in your own home for a fraction of the price, but you must be willing to get your hands a little dirty in the process.

Instructions

    1

Cleanse your face using a gel or cream facial cleanser. Be sure to use specific eye make up remover if necessary to ensure all traces of oils and makeup are eliminated from your face before proceeding with the rest of the facial. Rinse all traces of cleanser from your face before going on to step 2.

    2

Rub a gentle exfoliating scrub to your face and gently rub the exfoliant in circles around your face. Make sure to target the T-zone especially (the forehead and nose) to open pores and eliminate bacteria that can cause blackheads. Rinse away all traces of the exfoliator before going on to step 3.

    3

Fill the sink with hot water and soak the washcloth in the water. Ring out the majority of the water, then press the hot, damp cloth to your face, allowing the steam to help bring out the impurities in the skin.

    4

Apply a face mask to your face. Use a clay mask for oily skin, or a cream mask for dry skin. Cover the entire face with a thin coat of the mask, then allow the mask to dry for about 15 minutes (read the directions on the specific product for exact time). Rinse or peel mask from face after the time has passed. Rinse face with lukewarm water to make sure all mask residue is gone from the face before going on to step 5.

    5

Apply facial moisturizer to the entire face. Make sure the moisturizer you choose is good for your skin type. For example, if you have oily skin, make sure you choose a moisturizer that is oil-free, so it will not cause you to break out.

Alternatives to Premarin Cream

Premarin cream is used by women who wish to treat the dryness, itchiness and burning sensation around the vaginal area due to menopause. While this is popular, there are many natural alternatives that can be used.

Ginseng

Ginseng is a Chinese herb that is widely used in the United States for various ailments. Many use ginseng to strengthen the immune system, build resistance to disease, increase concentration, and stabilize female hormones. There are no definitive studies that guarantee Ginseng has phytoestrogenic properties, but it does contain saponins, which are believed to regulate hormones. This is a very common herb found mostly as a dietary supplement. Ginseng can be found at any drug store, supermarket or nutrition store.

Chaste Tree

This herb is used by women who suffer from the usual symptoms of menopause, such as bleeding, pain and inflammation of the vaginal area. The Chaste tree plant does not contain hormonal compounds, but its flavanoids act on the pituitary gland of the brain to release hormones. It will raise low estrogen levels and balance the production of estrogen and progesterone. Chaste tree is typically found as a concentrated liquid extract, powdered or pill from and is not as widespread as Ginseng. Many websites sell this herb, and some specialty nutrition stores carry it.

Gotu Cola

Gotu Cola is a tropical herb commonly used as a diuretic, a mild sedative and an anti-inflammatory agent. It can help relieve the discomforts of menopause, particularly hot flashes, feelings of depression and vaginal dryness. Gotu Cola can be found as liquid extract, tea leaves, or in pill form. It can be found in special nutrition shops and on the internet.

Warning

Premarin is standard prescription that women use during the menopausal phase of their lives. It is OK to try out different herbal remedies, but they may not be sufficiently able to replace a doctor's prescription. Some herbal remedies may cause an allergic reaction or respond negatively with medicines that you take now. Consult with your physician before taking herbal remedies to avoid potential side effects.

Natural Treatment for Removal of Stretch Marks

Natural Treatment for Removal of Stretch Marks

There are two main causes of stretch marks: weight gain and pregnancy. They appear on the hips, breast and stomach during pregnancy and on the thighs when weight gain is the cause. Stretch marks appear during rapid growth which occurs when the skin is stretched too far and the elastic fibers break. Hormone problems can cause stretch marks also but this does not happen very often. There are natural ways to remove stretch marks.

Cocoa butter

Apply cocoa butter every day on the area where the stretch marks appear to help minimize and remove them. Use cocoa butter as often as you need to get rid of stretch marks.

Vitamin E oil

Vitamin E oil or cream can help reduce stretch marks naturally. Rub it on your breasts, hips, thighs, belly and anywhere else stretch marks are noticeable to help eliminate them.

Pure mink oil

Use 100% pure mink oil to get rid of stretch marks naturally. Apply the mink oil twice a day where stretch marks are visible.

Vitamin A moisturizer

Vitamin A moisturizer may help enhance the growth of new skin cells and may also help reduce the appearance of stretch marks when normal body volume is lost. Apply and massage Vitamin A to the area where stretch marks are visible and even after they are gone to prevent them from returning.

Exercise

Exercise your leg muscles every day to help eliminate the appearance of stretch marks. Do twenty leg raises with both legs every day and/or night. Doing these exercises may help minimize stretch marks on the legs and hips.

How to Use a Castor Oil Pack on Your Sinuses

Castor oil has been used for many years as a natural home remedy treatment for psoriasis, pulled muscles and sinus irritation. The nasal sinuses are open areas in the skull that are lined with moist membranes. The sinuses are located between the eyes, in the middle of the forehead, on each side of the nose and on each cheek just above the teeth. Inflamed sinuses can swell, which make it hard to breath and can cause pain. A warm castor oil pack may offer relief from sinus pain and pressure.

Instructions

    1

Cut three pieces of natural un-dyed wool or white flannel cotton in a size to cover the affected area. Cut a piece of plastic wrap the same size as the pieces of cloth.

    2

Soak the wool or cotton with pure castor oil. Make sure each piece of wool or cotton is thoroughly saturated but not dripping with oil. Use only natural un-dyed wool or flannel cotton. Castor oil can cause some dyes to fade, which may stain your skin.

    3

Place the layers of cloth that is saturated with castor oil on the affected sinus area. Cover the cloth with the piece of plastic wrap. Place a hot water bottle over the cloth. The plastic wrap will prevent the oil from soiling the hot water bottle. If you do not have a hot water bottle, you may use a small electric heating pad over the plastic covered cloth.

    4

Relax and leave the castor oil pack on the affected area for up to 30 minutes. Breathe normally and allow the castor oil to permeate your skin over the inflamed sinus area.

How to Improve Lung Function with Yoga Breathwork

Patients who suffer from chronic lung disorders like asthma, COPD or cystic fibrosis could benefit greatly from yoga breathwork. Yoga helps to improve lung function by opening up lung passages and releases stale air accumulated at the base of the lungs. By exhaling out toxins, it allows the lungs to circulate fresh, clean air.

Instructions

    1

Lie on your back. Rest your hands to the side. Close your eyes and breathe normally through your nostrils. Allow the breath to come and go naturally. Relax your body on the mat as you breathe naturally for one to two minutes.

    2

Sit up in a cross legged position. Inhale slowly to the count of three and exhale slowly to the count of six. Increase the breath counts. Inhale to the count of four and exhale to the count of seven. Inhale to the count of five and exhale to the count of eight.Repeat two to four sets.

    3

Inhale and exhale naturally through the nostrils for a minute to center and ground yourself. Inhale through your nose to the count of three and then open your mouth and exhale forcefully by opening your mouth and letting out your breath so it forms the word: "Hahhhhhhhh" (make sure you draw out the breath when you open your mouth). Repeat six to eight times.

    4

Lie back on the mat and close your eyes. Visualize your breath as a warm, bright light flowing your lungs as you inhale deeply to the count of three. As you exhale to the count of three, visualize the stale air releasing from your lung as puffs of grey smoke. Concentrate on your lungs and feeling positive energy flowing through your lung and heart center filling your body with fresh pure air. Imagine toxins leaving your body as you lie on the mat as you become aware of your natural breath. Place your hands on your chest and feel the natural rise and fall of your chest as you breathe. Stay in this reclined pose for at least one minute.

    5

Sit up and sit cross-legged on mat. Inhale to the count of three as you raise your hands over your head and exhale to the count of three as you release your hands to your side. Bring your hands to heart center and end your breathwork practice by saying: Namaste.

What Is Chelation?

Chelation is a medical treatment for the treatment of hardening of the arteries. Holistic practitioners actually use heavy metal poisoning in the process. Chelation is also being used to treat heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and kidney disease, though the scientific evidence supporting its efficacy in the treatment of other diseases is not as strong as that which supports its use in treating atherosclerotic disease.

History

Chelation therapy traces back to the 1950s when it was developed to treat heavy metal poisoning. The subject would be treated with chelation therapy as a method for the binding and ultimate removal of excess lead. If the therapy was given early enough it could be successful in the reducing the damage done by the presence of lead in the body.

Process

The actual process of chelation is quite sophisticated. Therapy is accomplished by introducing a synthetic amino acid known as ethylen diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) to facilitate the removal of metals and toxic substances from the blood. As the therapy continues, it is believed to clear the arteries as well. If successful, this will cease the progression of atherosclerosis. In the best case, chelation actually reverses the progression.

Identification

Chelation is also identified as a treatment that involves chemicals known as cleaning agents that work to bind substances in the body. The purpose in this kind of chelation is also the removal of these substances. Chelation is not just used to treat accidental ingestion of metals, but also the condition of thalasemia which is buildup of iron overload due to repeated blood transfusions.

Infusion Therapy

Chelation therapy is practiced most often through infusion into a vein. This is preferable to oral ingestion of EDTA because the stomach does not absorb it as readily. The animo acid is usually excreted by the kidneys in the form of urine and up to 95 percent is usually removed from the body within the first 24 hours.

Time Frame

The standard time frame for chelation therapy is around three hours. Subjects typically begin with weekly treatments for anywhere from two to three weeks. Following this initial period, the chelation infusions are cut down to every few months. This is done to ensure that the benefits of the treatment remain in place. In addition to the venous infusion, high dose vitamins are taken orally.

Side Effects

Side effects of chelation are rare but not unknown. Some side effects that have been reported include phlebitis at the site of venous infusion. Others may experience a temporary drop in blood pressure or lowered levels of blood calcium. More serious potential side effects include kidney damage, heart rhythm abnormalities and bone marrow suppression.

Solar Lamps for Healing

Solar Lamps for Healing

Using solar lamps for healing is relatively new, although using sunlight and heat for healing is an ancient practice. Also called light therapy or phototherapy, this practice involves using exposure to specific wavelengths of light using bright, full spectrum light, light-emitting diodes, lasers, dichroic lamps or fluorescent lamps for a certain length of time.

History

Since ancient times, health practitioners have known about the healing effects of the sun. Later, the medical profession realized that sunlight provides vitamin D to the human body. In relatively recent times, the use of concentrated light sources (solar lamps, infrared heat, etc.) has been explored as a treatment for a range of maladies.

The Facts

Sunlight is the most important source of vitamin D in the body. According to Dr. Michael Holick, author of The UV Advantage, vitamin D is used by the human body to prevent chronic diseases such as cancer, osteoporosis and mental disorders. All energy on earth derives from the sun. The sun or an artificial broad spectrum light source makes plants grow and thrive. Infrared lamps are often used on chicken farms or other farms to keep indoor animals healthy and warm. They are used to keep reptiles thriving in aquariums. There are infrared saunas. Light therapy is sometimes prescribed by psychiatrists to treat depression and seasonal affective disorder. For decades now, children born with jaundice have been treated with light therapy. Infrared heat is used in hospital nurseries to keep babies warm.

Types

Light Therapy -- Also called phototherapy and bright light therapy. It's used to treat seasonal affective disorder (SAD), depression and Parkinson's tremors, among other disorders. In this therapy, you sit in front of a "light therapy box" that gives off a bright light like that of sunlight.

Infrared Light -- There are three types of infrared light: near, far and far-far. Near is the region closest in wavelength that is detectable by the human eye; the others are progressively further from visibility.

Infrared Sauna -- These saunas use infrared heaters which emit infrared radiant heat. This heat is absorbed directly into the body. It differs from a traditional sauna, wherein a heat source (flame or heaters) are used to warm the air and stones in a room, which makes the temperature rise, thus making body temperature rise.

Deep penetrating light therapy (DPLT) -- Using light emitting diodes, this treatment is used in wound healing, pain reduction, severe acne and in reducing wrinkles. Studies show that skin cell growth occurs at a rate 150-200 percent faster when they are exposed to LED light wavelengths.

Benefits

Light therapy is believed to alter circadian rhythms, thereby suppressing the body's release of melatonin. This helps control the effects of seasonal affective disorder. It may also be of value against other psychiatric problems, such as bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder and postpartum depression.

Some studies have shown that light therapy activates the body's production of hormones, including testosterone and estradiol, follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone. This could have value in a range of maladies, including impotence and infertility.

Studies have shown that phototherapy may be of value against tremors in Parkinson's patients.

Light therapy is commonly used in hospitals as a treatment for neonatal jaundice.

Light therapy has been used successfully to kill the bacteria that cause severe acne.

Light therapy is used for psoriasis and eczema in conjunction with oral medications.

Light therapy is used for tanning when the lights combine UVA and UVB spectrums.

Although some claim that light therapy promotes wound healing, there is no medical evidence to date proving it works. Deep penetrating light therapy (DPLT) is used for this purpose.

Precautions

Risks and side effects may include:

    Agitation
    Dry mouth
    Eyestrain
    Fatigue
    Headache
    Irritability
    Mania
    Nausea
    Sleep problems
    Vomiting

Side effects are usually mild and go away within a few days. UV light may cause skin or eye damage. Although most light therapy devices no longer contain UV, some still do. Consult a health professional before use if you have sensitive skin, if your medications increase the effects of sunlight (e.g., some antibiotics and inflammatories) or if you have an eye condition. Persons with bipolar disorder or depression should consult their health care provider before use.

Holistic Medical Treatments For Acne & Clogged Pores

Holistic Medical Treatments For Acne & Clogged Pores

Holistic acne treatments address not only the symptoms of acne but also the core causes by assessing the individual's health as a whole. It emphasizes the roles of nutrition, lifestyle and stress-handling techniques to treat the patient while avoiding chemical and invasive treatments. Conventional treatment of acne and clogged pores commonly includes antibiotics, harsh lotions and drugs with dangerous side effects; these treatments often work well initially but lose effectiveness over time.

Diet and Nutrition

A well-balanced diet with plenty of water, leafy green vegetables, fresh fruits, and protein and low in fat, salt and spices will keep the body in balance and less prone to breakouts. Vitamin B2 helps to normalize sebum production. Foods such as wheat germ and organ meats contain high amounts of vitamin B2. Drinking a juice mixture of one part beet juice, three parts carrot juice and two parts water provides beta carotene while also flushing out toxins.

Herbal Medicine

Herbs are often recommended for treating acne. Aloe vera may be applied directly to blemishes to speed healing and soothe irritation. Lavender mixed with water is often used daily as an astringent. A mixture of lemongrass, licorice root and rosebuds can be added to boiling water to create an at-home sauna that will cleanse and purify the skin.

Vitamin Therapy

Zinc is known for healing skin and reducing inflammation; take 30 to 50 mg per day to fight acne. Chromium picolinate supplements may help acne by reducing skin infection; take 150 mcg per day to fight acne. Vitamin A works as an antioxidant and promotes skin repair and reduces sebum production; take up to 10,000 IU daily to fight acne. If you are pregnant, do not take more than 5,000 IU. Overdoses of Vitamin A can cause side effects such as headaches and joint pain. Talk with your doctor before taking any of these supplements.

Ayurvedic Medicine

According to the Hindu art of Ayurveda, problems of the skin indicate problems in the body. Proponents of Ayurvedic medicine believe that the Pitta body type is prone to acne due to its propensity for liver problems. Treatment includes avoiding spicy foods and eating plenty of bland foods such as oatmeal, rice and applesauce. Drinking tea containing teaspoon of cumin, coriander and fennel provides relaxation and aids digestion.

Other Treatments

Yoga is often used to increase blood flow to the face, flush out toxins and promote nutrient flow to the face. Poses such as the cobra and seated sun are particularly helpful. Acupressure performed on the stomach meridian is thought to help improve the appearance of skin. Reflexology performed on the liver and kidney pressure points of the hands or feet is thought to clear acne.

Desiccated Liver Remedies

Desiccated liver is made up of beef liver that is compressed into a powder and turned into a supplement capsule or tablet. It is considered a natural supplement that is rich is vitamins A, C, D, B-complex, iron, protein, copper, calcium and phosphorus. There are many benefits from taking desiccated liver.

Glandular Treatment

Desiccated liver supplements can be used as the oral form of glandular treatment. This treatment is based on the theory that human glands will work better when glandular materials from another animal are consumed. This remedy is helpful because the liver of an animal is not commonly consumed during meals. Desiccated liver can also be taken in the form of injection, which works faster and over a longer period of time.

Benefits

The nutrients in desiccated liver can help to maintain healthy gums as well as treat gum disease, liver disorder and anemia. It reduces and prevents stress that is built up in the body as well as relaxes the body's natural stress response which works to decrease depression. The folic acid contained in this supplement aids in treating depression as well as constant fatigue.

Desiccated liver works to stimulate red blood cell production as well as aid in the repair and buildup of body tissue. This natural remedy works to eliminate fatigue while increasing energy, metabolism and endurance. The natural source of iron helps to promote bone health. Most importantly, this supplement strengthens the immune system.

Warning

You should not use desiccated liver supplements if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding. This supplement is not recommended for young children or people with hemochromatosis, thalassemia, sideroblastic anemia, sickle cell anemia and chronic liver failure. If you receive frequent blood transfusions you should not take desiccated liver supplements. If you are taking cold/flu medicine, laxatives, aspirin or other nutrient supplements you should consult with your doctor.

Desiccated liver is not intended as an iron treatment for those who suffer from iron deficiency. There are no standard dosage amounts, so it is best to follow the daily dosage on the supplement's label. There are several types of desiccated liver supplements. To ensure that you are consuming the most natural sources, only purchase supplements that are extracted from grazing cattle. It is essential to only implement desiccated liver supplements that come from animals that are clinically tested and are free of chemicals and antibiotics.

Detoxamin Benefits

Detoxamin is a form of chelation therapy. Chelation therapy is the process of administering certain agents that will remove poisoning from heavy metals such as lead, iron, copper, calcium, magnesium, zinc, plutonium and manganese. Chelation therapy can be done in many ways, but there are some benefits to using Detoxamin instead of other forms of chelation therapy.

Type

Some forms of chelation therapy can be done with infusion or by orally taking pills. Detoxamin is a form of chelation therapy that is done with suppositories. A suppository is a form of delivering drugs that requires inserting the medicine into the rectum or vagina.

Effects

According to the Detoxamin website, toxic metals have been known to clog arteries. Detoxamin will flush the arteries and provide protection from heart disease.

Safety

Since Detoxamin is in the form of a suppository, it can be safer than some other forms of chelation therapy. For example, some chelation therapy is done by injection with a needle, and needles pose a chance of infection. Detoxamin has no known health risks.

Convenience

Sometimes, chelation therapy can be inconvenient because it has to be administered by a doctor if it is the form of an injection. Detoxamin is convenient because the person taking it can administer the suppository without a doctor visit.

Effectiveness

The only other form of chelation therapy that is as convenient and safe as Detoxamin is in pill form. But a pill doesn't absorb as much of the toxic metal as a suppository, so it takes much longer to work.

Herbs for Treating Asthma

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that is characterized by acute attacks of shortness of breath. It constricts the muscles lining the small air passages of the lungs, which keeps air from leaving the lungs. Attacks are triggered by a variety of things, including allergic reactions, stress, smoke, exposure to cold air, toxic chemicals and low blood sugar levels. Herbal medicines are useful for preventing attacks and are not appropriate for treating an acute attack. Herbal therapies can also help make steroids more effective so they can be used at lower dosages with fewer side effects.

Herbal Treatments

German chamomile tea is a gentle antihistamine that can prevent asthma attacks. Drink one cup two or three times daily. Coleus, a popular Ayurvedic herb, also helps prevent attacks and is suggested for people with high blood pressure. Elderberry extract alleviates nasal congestion and fever. Ginger inhibits substances that cause allergic reactions. Use in the form of hexanol extract. Green tea contains a substance called theophyline, which opens bronchial passages. Drink one cup of tea two or three times daily. If you are using an inhaler, hawthorn can help prevent tissue damage to the liver, heart and pancreas. Take 250 milligrams three times a day. Grapeseed or pinebark capsules help prevent asthma attacks triggered by airborne allergens. Taking both is not necessary. Lobelia halts inflammatory reactions to dust, smoke and chemicals. Take 1,000 milligrams three times daily for no more than two weeks at a time.

Tylophora is a natural antihistamine and antispasmodic. It has a long history of use in treating asthma. Take 250 milligrams one to three times daily. Do not use if you are pregnant, or have diabetes, high blood pressure or congestive heart failure. Khella tincture stops bronchial spasms. This herb causes sun sensitivity. Use sunblock when outside. Quercetin relaxes bronchial passages. Take 250 milligrams three times a day. Do not use quercetin if you are taking Sandimmune, Neoral, Adalat or Procardia. Scutelleria stops allergic reactions. Take 2,000 milligrams three times daily. Do not use if you have diarrhea. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, a review of studies regarding pycnogenol found it has potential to reduce symptoms and improve lung function. Take 1 milligram per pound of body weight. Do not take more than 200 milligrams.

Herbal Formulas

Arrest Wheezing Decoction treats asthma that is accompanied by coughing, large amounts of yellow mucus, fever and chills. Ephedra, apricot, kernel, gypsum and licorice decoction are good for asthma with nasal allergy. It is especially useful for people with allergies to cedar pollen.

Ephedra, asiarum and prepared aconite decoction treats chronic coughing and wheezing. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the Japanese formula Saiboku-to has been shown to reduce symptoms and allowed those participating in the study to reduce their dosage of standard steroid treatments.

Other Suggestions

Thymus extracts can improve symptoms and shorten the duration of attacks. These extracts help the immune system fight off chemicals that cause allergic reaction. Take 750 milligrams once a day. Drink at least eight glasses of water daily to help loosen and expel phlegm. Avoid sulfites, which are preservatives found in wine and dried fruit. They cause bronchial congestion. MSG can have the same effect on people with asthma. Dr. Andrew Weil, a natural health expert, recommends experimenting with radical dietary change, such as completely eliminating sugar, long-term fasting, trying a vegan (no animal products) or a macrobiotic diet. He has had patients respond very well to these sorts of changes. Only fast under the supervision of an experienced healthcare provider.

Home Remedies for Swollen Tonsils

The tonsils are located on the back sides of the throat. When these lymph nodes become inflamed, they may swell and cause pain and discomfort. This irritation typically leads to a common ailment known as tonsillitis. Learning some effective home remedies for swollen tonsils can help alleviate the discomfort. A doctor's care should be sought if a fever or the inability to swallow occurs with the swelling.

Humidifier

Using a humidifier in your bedroom at night can help relieve the pain of swollen tonsils. The machine lightly moistens the air, making it easier for you to breathe and swallow as the moisture coats the tonsils. Maintain the humidifier by changing the water each night and cleaning the entire machine every other night to prevent mold and bacteria growth.

Gargling

Gargling with saltwater every 2 to 3 hours can help reduce tonsil discomfort and swelling. Add 1/2 teaspoon of table salt to an 8-ounce glass of slightly warm water. Gargle a mouthful of the mixture for 5-10 seconds, then spit out. Repeat this at least five times every time you gargle for the saltwater to be helpful.

Rest Your Throat

Resting your throat can help alleviate the swelling and irritation. Avoid talking and eating solid foods as much as possible to reduce the discomfort associated with swollen tonsils. Continuing to talk when your tonsils are swollen can lead to laryngitis, a condition that affects the vocal cords and impairs your ability to speak. Reduce your eating to three times a day, and consume soups, broths, and other easy to swallow foods if possible.

Liquids

Drink plenty of liquids to ensure you stay hydrated and help your body fight the swelling and any infection that may be present. A minimum of eight glasses should be consumed. Water is the most recommended beverage during this time. Milk has also been known to help irritated tonsils.

How to Select Herbs for Home Remedies to Treat a Yeast Fungal Infection

A yeast infection is an increasingly common fungal infection. A number of antifungal herbs are used for herbal home remedies to alleviate yeast symptoms. The following herbs have been found to be effective anti-fungal remedies.

Instructions

    1

Prepare yeast home remedies with herbs that are rich in berberine and hydrastine, such as goldenseal. berberine and hydrastine are two volatile, anti-fungal ingredients that help slow down the growth of the yeast fungus and eventually destroy it.

    2

Select anti-fungal herbs such as marigold. Marigold is a flower that is believed to have anti-fungal properties. Its leaves are the source of its medicinal properties against fungus and are often ground and the liquid is extracted for therapeutic use.

    3

Use herbs such as garlic that contain high levels of allicine. Allicine is a naturally occurring compound in some plants, and serves as a strong anti-fungal agent.

    4

Incorporate tea tree oil: Tea tree oil has many medicinal uses. Among them is the ability to treat yeast infection. One example is the common yeast infection candida.

    5

Relief for Chest Congestion

Relief for Chest Congestion

Chest congestion occurs when excess mucus and fluid build up in the lungs. The common cold, asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia and air pollution are just a few reasons why you may feel congested. Medications and home remedies can help relieve your symptoms, but there are times when a doctor's healing touch is needed.

Drink More Liquids

By drinking liquids, such as water and juice, you help break up the mucus and clear the congestion. Hot liquids work even better, that's why your grandma may suggest a warm bowl of chicken soup when you're sick. The warm broth loosens the mucus, allowing you to breathe easier. Warm tea with honey and lemon is a great choice, because it soothes the throat.

Humidifiers and Steam

Humidifiers work wonders for chest congestion. Make sure to keep your bedroom door shut so you can build up a good amount of steam. You can still get the congestion-busting benefits of steam even if you don't have a humidifier. Simply go into the bathroom, shut the door, and turn on the shower. Make sure that the water is as hot as possible so the bathroom steams up quickly. You should feel your chest congestion breaking up in no time.

Medications

If home remedies don't work for you, it may be time to try some over-the-counter medications. Cough syrup will help thin out the mucus, giving you relief from your congestion. Avoid cough suppressants, because coughing is a natural reflex that helps you cough up the mucus. Many drugstores allow you to speak to the pharmacist. Ask him to recommend the best cough syrup for your congestion. Recurring chest congestion is not normal, so it is important that you see your doctor if your condition does not clear up. You may be experiencing symptoms of pneumonia, which can be deadly if left untreated. If your doctor prescribes antibiotics, make sure you take all of them even if you begin to feel better. If you don't finish the medication, your illness may not go away.

Good Hygiene

Hand-washing is important when you're sick because you don't want to re-infect yourself. Use disposable tissues when blowing your nose or coughing up mucus, and wash your hands after doing so. Use antibacterial hand soap whenever possible, and carry a pocket-sized bottle of alcohol-based hand sanitizer when you go out. Change your pillowcases every night when you are battling congestion, because a dirty pillowcase can aggravate your condition.

Sinus congestion happens when the sinus passages are blocked by the accumulation of mucus, or when the sinus passages become infected, which causes them to swell and prevents mucus from draining out as it normally does. The pressure that is caused by the swollen, infected, and mucus-filled sinus passage results in discomfort and pain all around the sinus passage, particularly in the face and often around the ears. Headaches often result from sinus pressure.

Massage Forces Mucus Down

Facial massage, when performed properly, with a gentle yet firm motion downward on the face, can help to relieve sinus pressure by warming and slowly moving the mucus down the sinus passages. Think of what you do when you are squeezing the last bit of toothpaste out of the tube; it's in there, but it is sticking to the sides of the tube. You use your fingers to create pressure and slowly force the toothpaste up the tube.
The simplest kind of facial massage for sinus congestion can be performed anywhere, anytime. To perform it on yourself, simple place one index finger on each side of the bridge of your nose. Slowly and gently, run your fingertips down the outside line of your nose, slowly widening as you reach the base of your nose. If you are congested at all, you will notice that you need to swallow or sniff, as mucus is being moved around in your sinus passage and is triggering a response to get rid of it. Don't sniff and pull it back into the sinuses; perform the same motion a few more times, then blow your nose.

Pressure Points Relieve Pain

Additionally, there are pressure points on the face, neck, and head that can relieve the pain and achiness caused by the sinus pressure. An experienced facial massage therapist with training in pressure point therapy will be able to apply appropriate pressure and reduce the discomfort and tension related to sinus congestion.

Neem for the Treatment of Scabies

Caused by an infestation of the itch mite sarcoptes scabiei, scabies is an itchy and irritating skin infection. Neem, a medicinal plant used to treat many skin diseases, is also gaining attention as a remedy for scabies.

History

Known for its versatility in treating skin and scalp diseases, neem has been widely used in therapeutic remedies in Ayurveda, traditional Indian medicine, for hundreds of years.

Significance

As the scabies mite becomes increasingly resistant to conventional treatments, the skin condition is getting harder to treat. Neem acts on the scabies mite by disabling its reproductive system. With its breeding capabilities decimated, the chances of a future generation resistant to the herb are almost none.

Considerations

People suffering from scabies may have a compromised skin barrier that does not react well to standard permethrin-based treatments. Compared to permethrin, which is a known skin irritant, neem has anti-inflammatory properties that soothe the skin on contact.

Research

A review article published by the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology in 2002 reported the efficacy of neem in treating scabies. Clinical trials done with the topical application of a lotion containing neem leaf extract successfully treated skin diseases such as scabies, ringworm, and eczema in three to four days.

Expert Insight

Discover Neem, a website dedicated to neem research, reports that persistent cases of scabies that continually resist standard treatments respond well to neem.

Naturist Cures for Intrinsic Asthma

Intrinsic asthma is unrelated to allergies and results from stress, smoke, toxins, anxiety, chemicals, cold weather, gastrointestinal reflux disease or a virus. It normally occurs in adults over age 40. Many natural supplements and herbs are available to help you manage intrinsic asthma. You should consult with an experienced health care professional about using natural treatments for this condition to design a safe regimen that will not interfere with standard treatments. Based on a review of studies and other literature, the University of Maryland Medical Center suggests the following treatments might be beneficial.

Supplements

Research indicates that people with asthma have low blood levels of certain substances and supplementation might be of benefit. They include magnesium, selenium, and coenzyme Q10. Talk to your doctor to see if these supplements might help you. She will also be able to suggest an appropriate dosage.

The B vitamin choline can reduce severity and frequency of attacks. The suggested dose is three grams per day.

Studies on Omega-3 fatty acids produced mixed results. Reported benefits included a reduction in symptoms in both children and adults. Talk to your doctor about this treatment.

1,000 milligrams of vitamin C daily can assist in keeping airways open.

If you are taking the standard medication theophylline, you may be deficient in vitamin B6 and potassium. Talk to your doctor before deciding to supplement to get an appropriate dosage. Taking too much of either can cause complications

Herbal treatments

Studies involving boswellia, a popular herb in traditional Indian medicine, showed that taking it improved lung function and decreased the number of attacks. Take 3 milligrams three times a day. Discuss this treatment with your doctor if you are taking cholesterol medication or NSAID's (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).

Coleus forskohlii is another principal asthma treatment in Indian medicine. Studies suggest inhaled powder relieves symptoms. Do not use this herb if you have diabetes, thyroid problems, are using blood thinners, or are pregnant. Consult with a doctor familiar with Ayurvedic medicine to determine proper usage.

Tylophora has a long history of use in treating asthma and some studies showed benefit, but were not high quality. Use 250 milligrams one to three times daily. Do not use if you are pregnant, have diabetes, high blood pressure or congestive heart failure.

Pycnogenol reduces symptoms and improves lung function. Take 1 milligram per pound of body weight and do not exceed 200 milligrams. Avoid this herb if you have diabetes, high blood pressure or are using blood-thinning medications.

The traditional Japanese formula Saiboku-to reduces symptoms of asthma. In several trials, it allowed participants to decrease their dosage of steroids. Be sure to discuss this treatment with your doctor.

Homeopathy

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, research relating to homeopathy as a treatment for asthma is lacking. The following remedies are typically dispensed by homeopaths to address asthma. If you are interested in using homeopathy for this condition, it would be a good idea to consult with an experienced homeopath since treatments are very individualized. Dosing instructions are on the product label.

Arsenicum album is for asthma that typically gets worse between midnight and 2 a.m., accompanied by restlessness, anxiety, chills and thirst.

Ipecacuanha treats asthma accompanied by extreme tightness in the chest, persistent coughing with lots of phlegm that causes vomiting and with symptoms that get worse in hot and humid weather.

Pulsatilla is used for asthma that is worse in the evening or after eating fatty foods and produces a yellow or green phlegm.

Sambucus works best for people who are awakened at night by asthma that produces a feeling of suffocation and is more severe when lying down.

How to Find Out Whether Your Insurance Covers Homeopathy

How to Find Out Whether Your Insurance Covers Homeopathy

The cost of medical treatment is skyrocketing. It's no wonder, then, that many people are seeking less expensive options to traditional medicine. More and more people are turning to homeopathy to save money when treating allergies, depression and serious diseases. Homeopathy uses diluted natural products to trigger the body's immune response to disease. As the science behind this becomes more widely accepted, more insurance companies are beginning to offer individuals the option to choose a plan that covers homeopathy as well as traditional medical treatment.

Instructions

Find Out Whether Your Insurance Covers Homeopathy

    1

Ask your insurance agent. Your agent is the best resource you have for questions regarding individual coverage. If you have employer-sponsored insurance, ask your company's HR Manager to give you the appropriate contact names and numbers.

    2

Be persistent. It may take several attempts to find out whether your insurance covers homeopathy, especially if your agent is unfamiliar with alternative medicine. You might explain the cost-efficient nature of homeopathic treatments to an agent who is interested in learning more.

    3

Speak with someone else. Insurance agents are human and do not have all the answers. If you don't like what you're hearing, ask to speak to a supervisor or manager.

    4

Form an alternate plan. If your insurance doesn't cover homeopathy, consider switching to a plan or broker that does cover homeopathy. If you have employer-sponsored insurance, work with your Human Resources representative to find out how many company employees would be interested in homeopathy coverage. There is always room for negotiation in company-sponsored plans.

Moor mud packs and masks were used by the ancient Egyptians and Romans for various ailments as well as beauty treatments, and were often given with other spa treatments as part of a cure. Therapeutic mud often comes from areas around mineral springs, and the high mineral content of the mud is regarded as one the main reasons for its beneficial effects.Cleopatra is said to have prized it so highly as a beauty treatment that she persuaded Mark Anthony to conquer the region and present it to her as a gift.

Moor mud comes from a 20,000 year old glacial valley basin that never drained away allowing the moor to retain all of its organic, mineral, and trace elements. Clinical analysis has shown that the Neydharting Moor is uniquely rich in decomposed plant life, with over a 1000 plant deposits: flowering herbs, seeds, leaves, flowers, tubers, fruit, roots, and grasses. Over 300 of which have recognized medicinal properties.

The mix has no taste or odor so if the appearance is off putting the try adding the mix to fruit juice may color the liquid.

Yeast Infections in the Body

Yeast infections in the body are due to candida albicans, an overgrowth of the candida in the mouth. It can spread through the gastrointestinal tract to the intestines, creating a vaginal yeast infection in women. Men can get yeast infections, too. Overconsumption of yeast-containing foods, foods made from mold (cheese, mushrooms) and sugars of all kinds (including fruit) can feed yeast infections.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) states that left untreated, candida can spread to the brain (meningitis), heart (endocarditis), eyes (endophthalmitis), esophagus (esophagitis) or the joints (arthritis).

Identification

Candida is a well-known infection. Many women experience yeast infections while taking birth control pills. Both men and women can develop yeast infections after a taking a course of antibiotics---which kills off the friendly bacteria in the gut that normally keeps the candida bacteria in check.
If you have symptoms such as extreme fatigue, mental fogginess, vaginal yeast infections or feel "run down" physically, see your doctor to be evaluated for candida.

Features

Candida as a yeast infection is common in people with an immune system that is weakened from overwork or if the person has been ill recently and not fully recovered.
Candida lives in the mouth, throat, digestive tract and in the urinary tract. If you have a healthy immune system, you may not develop candida albicans.

Considerations

If you live or work in an area that is very damp and has signs of mold or if you have been ill frequently and have taken more than one course of antibiotic drugs, you may be more prone to developing candida albicans.
If you consume a lot of foods made from yeast, molds or sugars, you are also more at risk. Foods include yeast-containing breads (including pretzels, crackers and pizza), foods with mold (cheese, but also leftover foods with microscopic growths of mold) and sugar of all types, including fruits, honey, maple syrup, molasses and cane juice. Stevia is not considered a sugar.

Misconceptions

Many people, including medical professionals perceive yeast infections to be primarily a "women's health issue" because they identify them with vaginal yeast infections. While women do have yeast infections, men can also be at risk for yeast infections if they have a compromised immune system or fit the other criteria regarding environment and diet.

Prevention/Solution

Notice any obvious signs of extreme tiredness for no reason and a feeling of malaise. Women need to be treated before the infection spreads. Men, who may not exhibit signs of any yeast infections, need to be more aware of the signs of yeast infections.
See your doctor for early detection and treatment to prevent the yeast infection from spreading to other areas of the body.

What Are USP Oils?

What Are USP Oils?

When it comes to your health, you want the best for your body, especially if you are sick or seeking treatment for an ailment. Taking in a low quality medicine or using a low end oil product may not produce desired results. USP, the United States Pharmacopeia, sets high standards for several different medicinal items. If you purchase an item that has been approved by the USP, you can expect a quality product.

Definition

USP is the medical acronym for United States Pharmacopeia, a nonprofit organization. USP oils are oils that have been tested, examined and approved by the organization. If a product holds the USP label, it means that it has met or exceeded its standards. If you see the acronym USP NF, it stands for United States Pharmacopeia National Formulary. This is the printed book that clearly defines its standards on each product.

Purpose

USP determines and upholds specific safety standards for medical drugs, devices, dosage forms, dietary supplements and diagnostics. By purchasing oil with the USP stamp, you know that it is an item of high quality.

Types

There are two main types of oils that are tested for medical purposes. There are carrier oils and essential oils. Carrier oils are oils you can dilute and mix with essential oils or use by themselves. Common carrier oils are cottonseed oil, olive oil, sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, castor oil, peanut oil, sesame oil and soybean oil. There are numerous essential oils that can hold the USP label. Some of the most common essential oils are lavender essential oil, tea tree oil, lemon essential oil and rosemary essential oil.

Uses

USP carrier oils can be used for several different medicinal reasons. USP castor oil, for example, is used as a laxative. USP sweet almond oil is often used as the base of massage oils and essential oils are added depending on the medicinal intent. USP tea tree oil, for example, is often used as an antibacterial agent and for numerous skin issues. By mixing an essential oil with carrier oil, it dilutes the concentrated dosage, reduces the risk of skin irritation and makes the oils easier to massage into the skin to deliver the medicine.

How to Naturally Treat Sinusitis

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinus cavities that is followed with headaches, sinus pain, and cold like symptoms. Below are some tips to help treat your sinusitis naturally.

Instructions

    1

Make sure to get plenty of rest. Try to get a healthy 8 hours of sleep straight through the night. Taking a nap mid day can also help to speed up the recovery time of Sinusitis.

    2

Make sure to drink plenty of water. Drink at least 8 glasses of water per day. You should also try to drink herbal teas. I suggest drinking green teas and teas with ginger, which have added healing benefits for sinusitis. Adding a bit of fresh lemon juice and honey can also help with some symptoms of sinusitis.

    3

Avoid dairy, which can increase mucus and worsen some symptoms of Sinusitis.

    4

Use a humidifier to help get moisture into the air. It will help to keep mucus flowing properly and help keep your nasal passages cleared.
