White Noise Machines & Their Advantages

White Noise Machines & Their Advantages

Ambient sound has long been the remedy for sleepless nights. White noise is one recommended ambient noise. It is pleasing and contains no distracting words or tones. In addition to being a sleep aid, white noise machines can help people with other medical conditions. They also have uses outside of the medical realm.

Privacy

White noise machines can be used to create an audible wall of privacy in homes with close quarters. The white noise machine doesn't drown the voices from the next room. However, it does cause enough of an audible distraction that the people outside the room containing the white noise machine cannot hear what is going on. Ryan Howes, a psychologist and writer for "Psychology Today," writes about using his white noise machine to mask the counseling sessions from the people in the waiting room. In this way, the white noise is an audible cover.

Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the ringing in the ear, a symptom of several conditions including ear infections, head injuries, Meniere's disease and wax buildup. The condition can be chronic or occasional. Whenever it occurs, tinnitus does disrupt sleep patterns. The white noise machines offer a sound that masks the buzzing, whistling and ringing that is tinnitus. It may not get rid of the tinnitus sounds completely, but it can make the sufferer comfortable enough to get some sleep.

Baby Soother

It is a common mistake among new parents to make the infant's surroundings as fluffy and quiet as possible. However, the infant was created in an environment filled with noise from the mother's heart, the blood rushing through the body, digestion and also the sounds that permeated the womb from the outside. Placing the child in a quiet room is a foreign condition that most infants do not take well to. Some parents have found that the vacuum cleaner, dryer or dishwasher offers comfort for the infant. The reason is white noise. A white noise machine in the nursery is all you need to provide comfort for a newborn.

For Kids With ADHD

A Harvard University presentation on dealing with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) in children provided another use for the white noise machine. It seems that the white noise provides the stimulus needed for the child with ADHD to be able to focus on the tasks at hand. The presentation described how children with ADHD are easily distracted by noise, movement and anything else that goes on around them. These distractions inhibit their ability to focus on the schoolwork that must be completed. The child's brain needs something other than the mundane task in order to stay focused. The white noise machine offers the stimulus needed to help the child focus on his work.

Organic Remedy for GERD

Gastroesophageal reflux disease, also called gerd is a digestive condition that happens when stomach acid flows back up through the esophagus, according to the Mayo Clinic. Sometimes bile will also come back up also. Bile is made by the liver to digest food. These acids are very harsh and they can irritate the esophagus. Gerd is sometimes described as heartburn. This condition can be treated with medications, or natural remedies. Thankfully there are a few organic remedies that can be used to treat gerd.

How to Use Essential Oils for Nausea

How to Use Essential Oils for Nausea

While essential oils are best known for topical treatment for a variety of ailments, the healing qualities of their powerful aromas can also be used for a number of natural remedies. Aromatherapy is used for depression, tension, insomnia and even nausea. A few tips can help you to soothe an upset stomach with the healing aromas of essential oils.

Instructions

    1

Rub a few drops of peppermint essential oil into your temples and on your chest to help stop a churning stomach. Allow the oil to absorb fully as you inhale the healing scent. Peppermint tea, tinctures and capsules can also help to soothe nausea.

    2

Prevent motion sickness before it starts by soaking a handkerchief in a 50/50 solution of peppermint essential oil and water. Allow the handkerchief to dry and then keep it with you while riding in a car, flying or traveling by boat. When you begin to feel a bit motion sick or sea sick, hold the handkerchief over your mouth and nose, inhaling slowly and deeply. This is an effective treatment even for small children.

    3

Massage full strength lavender essential oil onto your wrists to help reduce nausea. Lavender is one of the most versatile essential oils, and one of the few that can be used undiluted directly on the skin; however, lavender is often used to help speed childbirth and is not recommended for pregnant women, unless the long-awaited moment has finally come.

    4

Enjoy a chamomile bath to help calm the nerves and soothe an upset stomach. Prepare a warm bath and add 20 drops of chamomile essential oil, soaking for at least 15 minutes. If desired, enjoy double the benefits of chamomile by sipping on a hot, honey sweetened cup of chamomile tea.

How to Treat Boils Through Diet

One of the easiest ways to treat and precent boils is to make changes to your diet. Boils are caused by an infection in the follicle of the hair. Boils usually come in groups, and this is usually due to bacteria. A lack of proper nutrition is often times the underlying cause of boils.

Instructions

    1

Eat more green leafy vegetables, as well as orange vegetables. These vegetables contain beta carotene, which helps to keep the skin healthy, and also helps to repair damaged skin. Focus on eating more vegetables raw and fresh, since other forms tend to lose most of their nutrition.

    2

Eliminate most processed foods and simple carbs, such as white flour and sugar, from your diet. All of these can worsen boils and also make you more prone to getting more of them in the future.

    3

Stay away from saturated and hydrogenated fats. Also stay away from shortening, lard, and other types of solid fats. These types of fat worsen boils.

    4

Avoid any caffeinated products. Caffeine aggravates skin conditions, such as boils.

How to Detoxify With Vinegar

How to Detoxify With Vinegar

Vinegar has been attributed to healing ailments through detoxification back to the time of Hippocrates and Julius Caesar. Vinegar can be used topically, added to water for soaking or ingested. For any of these methods, people typically use apple cider vinegar as white vinegar can contain chemicals. Also, since apples contain potassium, magnesium, phosphorous, calcium and iron, apple cider vinegar proves to be healthier than white vinegar. Whenever possible, use organic apple cider vinegar to further increase the health benefits of a vinegar detox.

Instructions

    1

Make vinegar tea by mixing two teaspoons of vinegar with one cup of hot water and one teaspoon of honey. The honey will help to cut some of the tart flavor of the vinegar. Using apple cider vinegar will further help the flavoring.

    2

Detoxify facial skin by applying apple cider vinegar to the skin for several days in a row. Pour the apple cider vinegar on a paper towel and wipe the face with it. Stay away from the eyes to avoid any possible stinging.

    3

Mix one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar with an 8 ounce cup of ice cold water, mix well and drink as quickly as possible to avoid the taste. Drink one of these glasses before each meal. This is a quick mixture for people short on time and ingredients, that will help improves digestion and gastrointestinal health through toxin removal.

    4

Add apple cider vinegar to a hot bath to detoxify and balance the pH level of the skin. Take one bath a day, not more than 20 minutes long. Start with one quarter of a cup of apple cider vinegar the first few days, and increase slowly each day, until you reach one cup per bath. To use as a detoxifying foot bath, add only a few tablespoons.

How to Draw Sterile Water Into a Syringe

How to Draw Sterile Water Into a Syringe

Sterile water is often used in conjunction with other liquids or powders and injected into the body, or is used to clean syringes. Whatever the purpose, there are several steps you must follow to safely draw sterile water into a syringe. If the sterile water will be injected into your body, you must remove all air bubbles from the syringe. Even if the sterile water is not injected into your veins, it is good practice to remove the air from the barrel.

Instructions

    1

Wash your hands with soap and warm water.

    2

Fill a clean container with the sterile water, if the water is not already in a container into which the syringe will fit.

    3

Push the plunger down into the syringe as far as it will go.

    4

Submerge the plunger or tip of the syringe in the water.

    5

Pull the plunger out of the syringe to draw the sterile water into the barrel of the syringe. Make sure to stop drawing the sterile water once the liquid has reached the correct measurement.

    6

Take the syringe out of the sterile water, and flip the syringe so the tip is facing up.

    7

Tap the side of the syringe with your finger a couple of times to draw the air bubbles to the top of the barrel.

    8

Push the plunger in to push out the air bubbles. Tap the side of the barrel again to draw any more air bubbles to the top of the barrel and remove them. Once the air is removed, you are ready to inject or remove the sterile water from the syringe.

How to Make Hand-Sanitizer Spray

How to Make Hand-Sanitizer Spray

Hand-sanitizer spray keeps the hands clean between washings. Doctors, nurses and many other professionals sanitize their hands frequently throughout the day. Commercial hand sanitizers can be expensive, so make your own and save money. Add your own fragrances to make a custom blend.

Instructions

    1

Measure 1 cup grain or isopropyl alcohol into a clean spray bottle. Either form of alcohol is acceptable as long as it meets the 60 to 95 percent alcohol requirement, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

    2

Add 1/2 cup aloe vera gel and 1/4 cup distilled water. The ancient Egyptians used aloe vera as a healing plant, and the sticky sap from its leaves acts as a moisturizing agent.

    3

Add 5 drops tea tree oil. Attach sprayer and shake to mix ingredients. Tea tree oil acts as a natural antibacterial agent. You also may add a few drops of fragrance oil if you do not like the strong smell of tea tree.

    4

Spray on hands and rub together until dry. Wash hands with soap and water prior to using hand-sanitizer spray. Hand-sanitizer spray is not a replacement for proper hand washing practices. Washing with soap and water cleans the hands while the hand-sanitizer spray disinfects to inhibit the spread of germs.

The Uses for Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide

The Uses for Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a naturally occurring liquid with a molecular composition of two hydrogen atoms and two oxygen atoms (H202). The extra oxygen atom gives hydrogen peroxide a boost that turns it into an oxidizer. Food grade hydrogen peroxide has a potency of 35 percent, while topical peroxide (for external use only) has 3 percent potency, and may contain additives and stabilizers. Food grade peroxide is caustic and needs to be diluted prior to use.

Cleaning and Disinfecting

The oxidation properties of food grade hydrogen peroxide make it useful as a cleansing agent. Used as a pre-treatment for stained laundry, especially organic stains like blood and grass, peroxide breaks down and dissolves the stain. Food grade peroxide will kill bacteria and fungus. Used to clean kitchen and bathroom surfaces, a 3 percent solution, placed in a spray bottle, will kill harmful bacteria, including E. coli, viral agents, and mold and mildew spores. Hydrogen peroxide can work as an alternative to chlorine bleach, and can be added to hot tubs and dishwashers.

Garden and Agriculture

Hydroponic growers use hydrogen peroxide to safely purify large quantities of water. Other gardeners use a diluted solution of 3 percent peroxide as a fertilizer and leaf spray for plants. A solution of peroxide and sugar creates a natural insect repellent for food and vegetable crops. A stronger peroxide solution kills weeds and invasive plants. Soaking seeds in a 3 percent solution overnight before planting encourages faster sprouting. The oxidation helps to break down the seed hull, allowing the seed to germinate faster. Roots and cuttings benefit from the addition of peroxide to the water they are contained in, as the extra oxygen prevents algae growth and speeds up development.

Personal Hygiene

Using hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash freshens breath, as it kills the bacteria that causes halitosis. Mixed with salt and baking soda, hydrogen peroxide works as a whitening, odor-controlling toothpaste. Soaking your feet in a peroxide solution helps soften calluses and corns, and heals minor cuts and abrasions. Soak toothbrushes in a hydrogen peroxide solution to keep them sterilized and bacteria-free. A weak solution used on the hair brings out natural highlights.

Medical Uses

Hydrogen peroxide was once a basic first aid item, treating minor scratches and skin wounds. Today, physicians discourage this practice because peroxide degrades the surrounding tissues, causing more harm than good. Other medical uses for hydrogen peroxide include removal of ear obstructions, especially hardened earwax, and fighting gingivitis, where a peroxide mouthwash helps control tissue degradation and halitosis.

According to CancerTutor.com, the use of peroxide as a cancer treatment is very controversial. The theory is that because cancer cells do not multiply in an environment that is high in oxygen, ingesting hydrogen peroxide will improve the bodys cellular oxygen levels and inhibit cancer growth.

How to Treat Cuts With Black Pepper

How to Treat Cuts With Black Pepper

Alternative medicines are gaining in popularity as we become aware of all the possibilities inherent in the herbs and spices that surround us. Black pepper is one such spice that has medicinal properties. Below is a look at how you can use black pepper to stop bleeding and help heal your cuts.

Instructions

    1

Rinse the cut. Make sure to get rid of any dirt or foreign matter that you might find. Be sure to cleanse it thoroughly before doing anything that might press infectious material further into the cut.

    2

Dab up any bleeding as best you can with a clean, sterile cloth or paper towel. If possible, keep the affected body part elevated; gravity will help stop the bleeding during this part of your treatment.

    3

Put black pepper on the cut. Ground black pepper is ideal for this, whether from the kitchen shaker or from packets of black pepper.

    4

Bandage securely. Depending on the size of the cut, use a normal adhesive strip, or, if necessary, adhesive tape with gauze. Be sure to cover all areas of the cut to help stop the bleeding and to keep out dirt and germs.

    5

Check the cut daily to monitor healing. With one application you should see significant progress such that you shouldn't have to repeat the process. You will notice that the black pepper has the effect of stopping the bleeding while assuring that the cut heals, often without much indication of scarring.

How to Know If One Needs Estrogen

How to Know If One Needs Estrogen

Estrogen is a group of steroids that aid the menstrual cycle in the female body. Estrogen is most commonly given to women who are post-menopausal to lessen the symptoms of menopause. Symptoms like hot flashes, depression, mood swings and vaginal dryness can be lessened with a small dose of estrogen therapy. Although most women will not be given the amount of estrogen that their body had originally been producing before menopause, it is just enough to provide relief for menopause symptoms during the difficult transition.

Instructions

    1

Monitor your symptoms. It is difficult to pinpoint a mood swing if you are in the middle of one, so ask your spouse or a friend if they think you are suffering from mood swings and to notify you when they think you are experiencing one. If you feel you are getting hot during the day or experience heavy sweating, you may be suffering hot flashes, a common symptom of menopause. Finally, if you are experiencing irregular periods or not menstruating whatsoever, this is a clear sign you are going through menopause.

    2

Take your age into account. If you are around the age of 51, the average age most women start to experience menopause, you are probably suffering from a lower estrogen than in the rest of your life. If you are under the age of 51 but still experiencing these symptoms, you may be in perimenopause, where your body is still menstruating, but you are transitioning into menopause.

    3

See a doctor. A doctor is best able to determine whether your symptoms are as a result of menopause or if you are suffering from another ailment where the symptoms may be similar.

    4

Get an estrogen test. A doctor can administer a blood test to determine if your estrogen levels are low. If you are suffering symptoms and your estrogen levels are also low, your doctor will likely prescribe a low-level estrogen pill to decrease the symptoms.

Nutritional Milk for Newborn Puppies

Nutritional Milk for Newborn Puppies

Newborn puppies need nutritional milk to grow and develop. Puppies' digestive tracts and metabolisms are dependent on receiving the appropriate nutrition components from a mother's breast milk or from an appropriate alternative milk supplement. There are numerous reasons why a mother will either not be able to produce milk or neglect an offspring puppy, making it necessary to create and provide nutritional milk.

Significance

Milk appropriate for newborn puppies should contain carbohydrates, mainly in the form of sugar lactose, fat, a principle energy component, minerals and vitamins, protein and water. Dog milk contains 9.5 percent protein, 8.3 percent fat, 3.7 percent lactose and 79 percent water.

Types

If you have a nursing newborn puppy without milk from a mother, use commercial supplemental milk formulas specifically designed for puppies. Commercial formulas are usually found at grocery stores and pet specialty stores. If you are unable to locate newborn puppy commercial supplemental milk, you can create a home formula that closely replicates the mothers milk. Homemade formulas suggested by your veterinarian might include condensed milk, yogurt, vegetable oil, light corn syrup, vitamin supplements and salt.

Considerations

Powdered newborn puppy formula can be used as nutritional milk for puppies. Homemade formulas can be made by combining one-half cup evaporated milk, one-half cup boiled water, 1 tsp. of corn oil, two raw egg yolks, 1 tbsp. of plain yogurt and one drop of pediatric multivitamin. Using evaporated milk instead of fresh milk results in less diarrhea symptoms. Add one-quarter of a lactase tablet to each batch of formula to aid in digestion and promote easier break-down of the lactose found in cows milk.

Expert Insight

Puppy hunger signals include continuous crying, suckling on objects and back-and-forth head movement. On average, puppies eat every three to four hours. By the time puppies reach three weeks old, feeding four times a day is sufficient. Puppies should begin eating solid foods by five weeks of age and eating two to three times daily.

Warning

Over-feeding puppies can lead to milk-inhalation in the lungs and develop into pneumonia. Over-feeding may also lead to excessive diarrhea. Prevent complications by speaking with your veterinarian about newborn puppy feeding guidelines. Avoid tube-feeding your newborn puppy without guidance from your veterinarian.

How to Manage Optic Neuritis

Optic Neuritis, or ON, is caused when the optic nerve becomes inflamed. This can be caused by diseases like Multiple Sclerosis, Lupus, viral infections and some medications. Whatever the cause, Optic Neuritis symptoms include sudden blurry vision, eye pain, foggy vision and changes in color vision. In some cases blindness occurs

Instructions

    1

Standard medicine advocates the use of IV corticosteroids to treat Optic Neuritis, however, there is no evidence this helps improve visual acuity after one year.

    2

When having an acute ON flare, your eyes will become tired more quickly. Resting the eyes frequently often helps.

    3

Increase the resolution on your computer screen or use voice recognition and text reading software. These technologies help decrease eye strain and pain.

    4

Try a pair of polarized sunglasses, both indoors and out. Wearing polarized sunglasses blocks out extra light waves, making it easier for your eyes to filter and process light. Colors may become clearer and blurriness may be reduced.

    5

Warm chamomile tea bags applied to each eye will help soothe your eyes and relieve pain.

Natural Cures Using Cherry Juice for Gout

Gout is a painful medical condition that usually affects the feet and toes, causing them to swell and burn. The onset can occur suddenly and can be debilitating. Gout is a complicated condition and doesn't discriminate as to who it affects, though men seem to get these attacks more often than women. While there are prescription medical treatments, natural ones can work just as well. Cherry juice in particular is a common remedy.

The Effects of Cherry Juice

If you experience gout, cherry juice can be a blessing. This liquid made from the dark red cherry packs a bountiful supply of vitamins and minerals, as well as flavonoids, antioxidants and anthocyanins. These qualities combine to make cherry juice an excellent treatment for relieving the pain caused by gout.

Anthocyanins are the pigments that cause the berry's deep red color, but, more important, they have anti-inflammatory properties. Cherry juice also reduces the amount of uric acid in the blood, one of the chief causes of gout.

How Much is Enough

To gain the full effects of cherry juice, drink two to three pints of pure, natural cherry juice a day, the equivalent of a half a pound of fresh or canned cherries, to keep your gout attacks at bay. This amounts to about two liters of cherry juice a day.

Technically, it doesn't matter if you drink the cherry juice or eat the cherries themselves. They both contain the same qualities, but the juice is easier to consume, not to mention more economical.

Other Considerations

Unless you are allergic to cherries and were not aware of this, the treatment has no side effects. Your body may take some time to adjust to the new level of juice intake if you don't normally drink juice.

For variety, try drinking mixtures with other dark berries such as blackberries or raspberries, both of which have the same beneficial properties.

Home Remedy Uses for Salt

The most familiar use of salt in the home is as a condiment for improving the taste of food. However, there are many other uses for salt -- from cooking and health to cleaning. Salt comes in many forms such as refined salt or table salt, iodized salt and kosher salt and unrefined salt which includes sea salt. Salt can also be used for home remedies.

Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT)

Salt is one of the major ingredients used in oral rehydration therapy. Oral rehydration therapy is a homemade liquid solution which is made by mixing salt, sugar and water together to be administered to children who have severe diarrhea. Diarrhea can harm children through dyhydration caused by the extensive loss of fluid. Oral rehydration therapy replaces the essential liquids and salts lost from the body.

Oral Care

Salt can be used as a mouth rinse to freshen breath. Make a mild saltwater solution by mixing equal parts of salt and baking soda and use as a mouth wash. Salt can also be used for cleaning teeth. Use a rolling pin or blender to blend the salt into a fine powder then mix one part salt to two parts baking soda. It may whiten teeth and is healthy for the gums and helps in the removal of plaque.

Sore Throat

Salt can help relieve a sore throat. A sore throat can be caused by a viral or bacterial infection. Salt is an antibacterial agent and kills bacteria by attracting water and attacking bacterial cell walls. It causes the bacteria to dehydrate and die. Stir half a teaspoon of salt into an 8-ounce glass of warm water and use as a gargle. Depending on the severity of the sore throat, this can be repeated every 30 minutes.

Eyes and Feet

Salt can be used to reduce puffiness around the eyes. Soak some sterile pads in a solution made from one pint of hot water and one teaspoon of salt. Apply over the puffy area for a few minutes. Salt can also be used to relieve tired feet. Soak feet in warm water to which a handful of salt has been added and rinse in cool water.

Skin

Salt can alleviate the pain from insect bites and stings. When stung by a bee, wet the area and cover with salt to relieve the pain. Soak mosquito and chigger bites in warm saltwater to help help ease the itch, then make an ointment out of lard and salt. Salt can also be used used when the skin comes into contact with poison ivy. Soak the affected area in warm salt water or if the area is big, you can fill a bath with warm saltwater, have a soak and then rinse off with clean water.

Ionic Foot Cleansing

Ionic Foot Cleansing

Ionic foot cleansing is the process of using an ion-generating unit submerged in salt water to draw out impurities from the body through the feet. This total body cleanse lasts 20 to 30 minutes. The process makes the salt water a continuation of the body's blood and fluid, thereby gently pulling out of the body the substances with oppositely charged ions and into the water.

Identification

The ion-forming machine generates negative and positive ions in the water, which are then conducted into the body through the feet.

Function

The ions formed in the water then act to complete the bonds of damaged cells and to react with other harmful substances in the body, causing these cells to let go of their bounded toxins. These waste products are then circulated out of the body and then released through the feet and into the water.

Considerations

Its purpose is to restore the natural balance of the body, from a more harmful and acidic internal environment, to a healthy, alkaline system. Our bodies are excessively exposed to pollutants and undergo cell damage caused by such factors as diet, the environment and stress.

Recommendation

It is recommended to follow up each treatment with mineral supplementation and eight glasses of water to replenish the body after treatment.

Significance

    Ionic foot cleansing

Upon completion, the person will feel relieved, more focused and less sluggish than before. Regular treatments that will continue to draw out the deep stores of toxins and impurities will result in a total body rejuvenation.

Myth of Probiotics

The human body contains 10 times as many bacterial cells as human cells. Most are benign or contained, but about a third are helpful, or what are called "friendly bacteria." The term "probiotics" refers to live organisms that naturally exist in the human gut and are reintroduced, usually orally, to increase the proportion of friendly bacteria in the gut. Some products, particularly yogurt, are marketed as promoting digestive health by reintroducing probiotics.

Contradictions Abound

Since the study of probiotics is young, marketing claims by supplement companies have far outrun the rate at which these products are tested. Consumers may find the information available bewildering. For example, one expert claims that stomach acid kills 99.9 percent of lactobacillus and bifidobacteria, which are probiotics in yogurt. Another says these probiotics are among the few that do survive the stomach. Then a UCSF study finds probiotics that don't even need to be alive to have an effect, since they have an immunostimulative role (like dead viruses used for a vaccine).

As another example, one expert argues that probiotics need a protective coating before they're ingested. Another claims that could kill the bacteria, while a third says no coating is needed at all. "I don't know how to tell consumers to sort through it," says Mary Ellen Sanders, executive director of the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics, as reported in the Los Angeles Times.

What the Science Says

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) sponsored a colloquium in November 2005. The findings were mixed. The greatest support of the effectiveness of probiotics was in the treatment of diarrhea, especially if caused by rotavirus, the leading cause of infantile diarrhea.

Other Encouraging Applications

The symposium also found that probiotics could prevent and treat urinary tract infections. They also appear to reduce recurrence of bladder cancer and to provide effective treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), one of the most common uses of probiotics. Evidence suggests that probiotics can shorten an intestinal infection caused by the bacterium Clostridium difficile, and prevent and treat pouchitis (a condition that can follow surgery to remove the colon) and atopic dermatitis (eczema) in children.

Room for Improvement

The conference panel found, however, that despite the encouraging evidence in certain applications, the benefits of probiotics were usually low. They also noted that much perceived success derived from a strong placebo effect.

Many gaps in the research were pointed out as targets for further study, such as the molecular process by which probiotics take effect. The panel also identified a need for larger, better-controlled studies. Furthermore, proper doses must be established that will survive stomach acid without being toxic. Schedules also need to be established; for example, to account for interaction with food and the merit of an empty stomach to avoid stomach acid.

IBS

IBS has many causes, but a common theme is that food isn't fully digested, giving gas-producing bacteria in the gut more food of its own. While adding friendly bacteria may help crowd out the bad bacteria, a more effective solution may be to make sure food is properly digested. This includes eliminating foods to which one is allergic, and combining foods digested at certain pH levels. For example, meats and fibrous vegetables shouldn't be eaten with starchy vegetables and grain, and fruit should be eaten separately altogether. Water should be consumed mostly between meals to avoid watering down stomach acid. Sometimes, insufficiently tested products provide an inadequate substitute for good habits.

Boil quart distilled water on low boil in a stainless steel pot. Make sure that the pot used to boil the water is made of stainless steel and not coated with any substance, such as copper, which can cause impurities.

    5

Pour quart boiled distilled water into the glass jar.

    6

Place the wooden board on top of the glass jar.

    7

Turn the switch to off on the power strip to prevent damaging the power supply. Plug the power supply into the power strip.

    8

Clamp an alligator clip on each 12 inch silver wire and insert the wires through the holes in the board. The clips will hold the silver wires in place and the wires should go down until they reache approximately one inch from the bottom of the jar.

    9

Write down the time. Flip the switch to the on position on the power strip.

    10

Turn the power off after four to five minutes and remove the silver wires from the jar. Wipe off the wires with a paper towel and scotchbrite pad. Place the silver wires back into the jar and turn the power on.

    11

Shine hand-held laser into the jar every 30 minutes. The light will become clearer and look solid red when the colloidal silver is done. The more solid and bright red the line appears, the higher the parts per million (PPM) of the collidal silver.

    12

Pour collidal silver in amber jars using a plastic funnel when it's finished cooking, approximately three hours of cooking time for the first batch.

    13

Put aside quart of colloidal silver. This will be used to seed your second, third, fourth batches, etc. The quart from the first batch of colloidal silver will be used in place of the quart room temperature distilled water and the cooking time will be 1 hours opposed to 3 hours for every subsequent batch after the first.

Natural Remedies for Helicobacter Pylori

Natural Remedies for Helicobacter Pylori

Helicobacter Pylori is a strain of bacteria that many people in the world are infected with, but only 20 percent of those infected have any negative symptoms. For those who do have symptoms, there is a possibility of stomach problems including ulcers. While there are some theories that the bacteria may have a beneficial effect, the general consensus is that it should be eradicated from the body upon diagnosis.

Raspberries

Raspberries have one of the highest concentrations of ellagic acid, a powerful disease-fighting substance. This phytochemical can be found in blueberries, strawberries and certain nuts and has been shown to be antiviral, anticarcinogenic, antimutagen and antibacterial. Ellagic acid destroys the offending stomach bacteria. This powerful phytochemical is preserved no matter how raspberries are cooked or frozen and is an effective natural combatant of the bacteria.

Broccoli

A Japanese study in April of 2009 found that broccoli is an effective natural remedy of the H. pylori bacteria. This study has since been further proven. In the trial, it was found that sulforphane in broccoli sprouts reduced the colonies of H. pylori bacteria in test subjects. Sulforphanes, similar to ellagic acid, have antimicrobial, anticancer and antidiabetic properties. Because symptoms returned when broccoli supplementation ceased, it can be assumed that continued addition of the antimicrobial sulforphanes to the diet occur.

Cinnamon and Speculation

A 1998 Israeli study found that extracts of cinnamon helped the stomach in its fight against H. Pylori. In the study, cinnamon extracts inhibited urease enzymes from catalyzing reactions in H. Pylori cells. This keeps the H. Pylori from performing all of their necessary functions. The cinnamon was found to work as well as a common antibiotic. There are several other substances that have been touted for their abilities to counteract H. Pylori, for example, herbs like garlic and ginger, oils such as coconut oil and oregano oil and apple cider vinegar. However, there is little proof in a scientific trial. Consult your doctor before using any of these unverified natural methods.

Home Remedies for Athlete's Foot

Home Remedies for Athlete's Foot

Home remedies for athlete's foot are easy to make and can quickly get rid of the itch. The most important thing is to keep the foot clean and dry. Bacteria and fungus love to grow in damp, dark areas, such as between the toes. Over the counter antifungal medications and ointments work but can be expensive. Instead use the home remedies for athlete's foot below, safely and effectively for both children and adults.

How to Unblock Your Nose

How to Unblock Your Nose

You don't have to resort to modern medicine if you find yourself with a blocked nose. Modern medicine takes one approach to relief while alternative medicines take another. Modern medicine often suppresses your body's reaction to something but does not address the root cause. Alternative therapies can do both--attack the root cause and relieve the symptoms. Here are some effective natural tips for unblocking your nose.

Instructions

    1

Wild German chamomile has active phytochemicals within it that help to clear up your blocked nose quickly and safely. First, take 2 handfuls of the dry bulk herb and put them in a ceramic bowl.

    2

Boil your water separately on the stove and then pour into your bowl of chamomile. Do not heat the herb directly or it will destroy the effective compunds.

    3

Sit with your head bent over the bowl and breathe in directly. Place a towel over your head to concentrate the steam inhalation. Chamomile opens up your airways and allows you to breathe freely. It also has a reputation as a sleep aid, so it's best to do this before you retire for the evening.

    4

If you want a quick fix, carry a vial of lavender oil (available at health food stores) around in your bag or purse. Then take it out and breathe it in when your nose gets blocked. Like chamomile, it has a relaxing effect so you can tackle a blocked nose and anxiety at the same time with this treatment.

Meniere's Disease Natural Remedies

Meniere's disease affects your inner ear and is characterized by unusual sensory perceptions, vertigo, hearing loss, a sense of pressure in the ear and tinnitus. This disease usually affects middle-aged individuals, and the severity of symptoms varies from one person to the next. The causes of Meniere's disease are not fully known, but the problem lies in the development of excessive fluid in your inner ear. Symptoms may occur in one or both ears. There are natural remedies that can help provide some relief from Meniere's disease symptoms.

Diagnosis

If you suspect that you have Meniere's disease, consult a physician to have your hearing tested. The doctor will check to see if you have experienced any hearing loss and will assess your inner ear. You may need to visit an ear, nose and throat specialist or an otolaryngologist for hearing tests. Your visit will entail a discussion about any issues with vertigo, ringing in your ears (tinnitus) and a full medical history to determine if you have Meniere's disease. Tests may include a hearing test to detect different sounds and an electronystagmography examination to observe your eye movements and to detect any balance problems.

Lifestyle Changes

Lifestyle changes are necessary to help reduce symptoms associated with Meniere's disease. First, vertigo is a spinning sensation that can make you feel dizzy; sit or lie down until the vertigo subsides. Avoid trying to read, watch television and stay away from bright lights to keep your vertigo symptoms to a minimum. Vertigo may cause you to lose your balance and fall, so be extra careful when walking and keep a cane on hand for additional support and stability when symptoms occur. Do not drive while you are experiencing vertigo. Pull the vehicle over if you begin to experience vertigo symptoms and wait until symptoms subside before continuing to drive. If your symptoms are severe and you have frequent bouts of vertigo, you may want to avoid driving entirely.

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo biloba can be used to manage the symptoms associated with Meniere's disease. This herb promotes proper circulatory functioning and helps keep your blood vessels protected. Consuming ginkgo biloba may improve blood flow to your brain and cognitive functioning. This herb also helps to diminish symptoms associated with tinnitus and vertigo as well. It can take four to six weeks to note the benefits associated with ginkgo biloba; take 120 mg of ginkgo biloba a day in divided doses.

Side effects may include rash, headaches and gastrointestinal upset. Pregnant women and breastfeeding females should not use ginkgo biloba. Stop using ginkgo three days before surgery to reduce any risks associated with excessive bleeding. Ginkgo biloba may interfere with certain medications like carbamazepine, valproic acid, fluoxetine, sertraline, paroxetine, escitalopram and phenelzine. It may also interfere with medications like nifedipine, aspirin, clopidogrel, dipyridamole, heparin, ticlopidine, ibuprofen, thiazide diuretics and trazadole. Diabetics should speak with a doctor before taking ginkgo biloba because it can increase insulin levels in the blood.

Rosemary

In "Herbal Medicines for Common Ailments: A Quick Reference Guide," Dr. Rene M. Tshiteya identifies rosemary as a treatment for tinnitus. Rosemary helps to improve circulatory and cognitive processes. Take 4 to 6 g of dried rosemary and brew it in 2 cups of hot water for 15 minutes. Strain the mixture and consume 3 cups a day to improve your circulatory processes and tinnitus.

Possible side effects include nausea and vomiting, and in extreme cases, coma and pulmonary edema can result. Pregnant women may miscarry if using rosemary, and breastfeeding females should also avoid the herb. If you have Crohn's disease, hypertension, ulcers or ulcerative colitis, avoid consuming rosemary. Do not consume rosemary oil orally because it is toxic. Rosemary can interact with warfarin, clopidogrel, aspirin, captopril, enalapril, lisinopril, fosinopril, diuretics like furosemide and hydrochlorothiazide, lithium and diabetic medications.

Guided Imagery Ideas

Guided imagery is a system of guided thought. Scripts based on visualizing a specific problem being solved or describing a relaxing environment are read aloud to the recipient of the treatment. The recipient enters into a relaxed meditative state and inwardly visualizes the scene being described.

Uses

This therapeutic treatment is used for a wide range of purposes from relieving general anxiety to aiding the effectiveness of chemotherapy. The meditative quality of guided imagery makes it a natural stress reducer. It is believed by many that visualizing the immune system in action boosts its effectiveness, making guided imagery a positive addition to healing regimens.

Products

Purchasing guided imagery sessions is an easy way to get started. People new to the practice may benefit from premade imagery recordings. This takes the guesswork out of the equation. Ask to hear recordings before buying them. The voices on recordings will vary in gender, pitch, and tone, and not every voice will be appealing. Guided Imagery Inc. currently offers sample recordings.

Techniques

Individuality is an advantage when creating guided imagery. Create imagery that fits personal values and lifestyle. Do not worry about "doing it right"---guided imagery is highly subjective. Create a scene that has personal meaning. When using guided imagery for relaxation, choose scenery that is appealing to you. Some people connect with water settings, while others will connect better with a forest setting or sky setting. Create imagery that is very specific to healing purposes. For instance, cancer patients often visualize blood cells attacking and defeating cancerous growths.

Write down imagery instructions and read them aloud, recording them to be played during sessions. Alternatively, have a friend read the instructions aloud. When writing a script for another to speak, be sure to indicate where each pause should occur and how long each pause should be.

Music

The use of music is a personal choice. Certain types of music can intensify the experience for some people. Popular genres for background music include Celtic, Native American, New Age, and Classical. Try nature sound compilations for imagery focusing on nature.

Benefits

Autonomy is important to mental well-being. Everyone has an inherent need to feel in control of his or her existence. Guided imagery provides a venue that gives individuals complete control over what happens next. Enjoy that control and the creative potential that goes with it. Even with guided imagery products that prepare the mental landscape for the listener, the individual mind will take control by adding its own touch to each component that makes up the scenery. The wonderful thing about guided imagery is that, with a little tweaking, it can be made relevant to any disease, stressor or disorder.

Castor Oil for Joint Pain

Castor Oil for Joint Pain

Castor oil can be used to relieve joint pain and other types of soreness by creating a castor oil pack and placing it on the sore area, according to some holistic medicine practitioners.

About Castor Oil

Castor oil is extracted from the castor bean plant's seeds, which grow in pods. The plant, which is also known by its botanical name, Ricinus communis, and is sometimes called the castor oil plant, tends to grow well in sunny, warm climates. The seeds, which resemble bulbous beetles, and the plant itself, are actually poisonous; eating a single seed can give you an upset stomach. Eating a number of seeds can cause cardiovascular issues. However, castor oil can be created safely from the seed because the poisonous element, ricin, that is most concentrated in the castor bean plant's seeds, is water-soluble and is excluded from the oil during production, according to the Canadian government's Poisonous Plants Information System.

Large amounts of castor oil are imported into the U.S. and Europe each year. The oil is mostly used industrially, including being used as a lubricant and to make certain printing inks. Just one percent of the castor oil that is made in the U.S. is used in medical treatments, according to Purdue's Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, but castor oil may be able to help relieve certain types of pain.

Castor Oil and Pain Relief

According to a recent Huffington Post commentary by fitness trainer Stefan Aschan, who founded the Strength 123 training program, castor oil treatments have been able to decrease injury healing time.

The nonprofit Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.), founded by holistic medicine practitioner and alleged psychic Edgar Cayce in 1931, suggests using a castor oil pack, along with a heating pad, to improve circulation and provide relief for aches and pains, including joint pain.

To create a castor oil pack, fold a 12x18-in. piece of wool flannel into three thicknesses, place it in a pan and saturate it with castor oil. Place the pack on the area that is experiencing joint pain, cover with plastic wrap, and a towel to absorb any excess oil, and then apply a heating pad. A.R.E. suggests leaving the pack on for about an hour and a half and using it for three days in a row to relieve join pain or other discomfort.

Although using castor oil to treat minor pains is widely considered an alternative medicine approach, some members of the medical community have examined castor oil's healing effects. In 1994, a revised version of William A. McGarey, M.D.'s book "The Oil That Heals: A Physician's Successes With Castor Oil Treatments" was published, analyzing case studies in which castor oil was used to heal medical problems.

What Is Energy Flow?

The energy theory of the body surmises that the body is fueled by more than just calories. Eastern tradition says there is a subtle energy that flows throughout the body, invigorating every cell with a universal life force call chi.

Function

Think of qi as an electric current, as everything in your body relies on qi for power. The current of this energy has to flow freely and steadily, or disharmony in the body will result.

Types

There have been several approaches cultivated over the centuries that practice the art of manipulating and facilitating the body's energy flow in order to maintain or achieve wellness. Reiki, tai chi, qigong, acupressure and acupuncture are all practices that are founded on the energy theory of the body.

History

The energy theory of the body is not an idea embraced by traditional Western medicine, even though it has been accepted as a viable biological premise in the East for centuries.

Misconceptions

While Western medicine is beginning to acknowledge that there are measurable benefits to such alternative healing techniques as acupuncture, there is still a reluctance to attribute this success to the manipulation of subtle energy in the body.

Identification

If you hold your hands about six inches apart as you relax, breathe deeply and settle the mind, you will often feel a magnetic, tingling sensation in your palms and fingers that Eastern tradition says is chi energy flowing between your hands.

Household Cures for Poison Ivy

Poison ivy is a plant that is causes what is considered to be one of the most common allergies in North America. Urushiol, the oil on poison ivy leaves, will cause an allergic reaction--in the form of an itchy rash--in many people. Urushiol is so potent that only one billionth of a gram is needed to cause a rash. Fortunately, a poison ivy rash can be easily managed and cured at the home with a few basic steps.

Homemade Mixtures

Mix baking soda and vinegar into a paste and apply it to the area affected by the poison ivy. Scrub for area with a dry cloth then let it dry. Once it is dry, rinse it off with cool water.

You can also mix cornstarch and water into a paste and spread it over the itchy areas.

Another solution includes mixing salt and water, and rubbing it into the rash. When the itch returns, use it again. It may sting for the first bit, but it will relieve the itch.

Yet another good mixture for relief is apple cider vinegar and water.

Plants and Herbs

There are many different plants and herbs that help to deal with poison ivy. Aloe is great for reducing blistering but also quickens the healing of the rashes; catnip has anti-inflammatory properties in its juice that can be taken from the leaves; and plantain, which can even be found in the yard, reduces itch and stops the spread of the rash.

Goldenseal can be used to treat poison ivy. Mix a teaspoon of its powdered form with a pint of water and spread it over the affected area. You can also drink it in a tea form or take it by the capsule.

Jewelweed can be rubbed on the area to reduce itch and dry the blisters. This can be done several times a day, but too much will irritate the skin.

Oatmeal

While oatmeal is normally a breakfast item, it can also be a fantastic treatment for poison ivy. One way to use oatmeal is to mix it with boiling water; wait for it to cool down to a point when it is just warm and then spread it on the affected skin.

If most of your body is affected by the rash, put three-quarters of the box of oatmeal into the bathtub and pour hot water in it to make it about waist high; then get in and soak. You can also put oatmeal in a sock and swirl it around the tub water. Soak in the water, but when coming out, don't dry yourself. This will leave a coating on the skin that will reduce the symptoms.

How to Mix Ionic Silver & Water

How to Mix Ionic Silver & Water

Ionic silver is a form of silver that dissolves in water. Manufacturers of the product claim it absorbs faster into the body than another similar product called colloidal silver. Ionic silver is frequently used in alternative medicine as a way to treat fungus, viral infections and bacterial illnesses. It is also taken as a supplement to help boost immunity. When using ionic silver, it's recommended that you mix the solution with clear water before drinking it.

Instructions

    1

Fill a glass with 8 oz. of spring water or distilled water.

    2

Measure out 1 tsp. of ionic silver solution for an adult. Use tsp. for a child.

    3

Stir the ionic silver into the water, and drink.

Aspirin and Honey for Acne

Aspirin and Honey for Acne

People reach for the aspirin bottle without giving it a second thought to relieve pain, fever and swelling. Aspirin is a shining star, prescribed at low-dosage, in the battle against cardiovascular disease and can reduce the risk of death from a heart attack, as well as improve the chance of recovery from severe stroke. It is also, when combined with honey, a popular topical home remedy for acne. Anti-bacterial properties of honey combine with aspirin in a homemade facial mask.

Features

Aspirin and honey can be combined at home as needed. The two ingredients are widely available in grocery and drug stores. Aspirin is crushed or dissolved in two or three drops of water before combining it with honey to make a grainy, sticky product. Experimentation is the rule when determining the correct ratio of aspirin to honey. Begin with three 325 mg aspirin tablets, dissolved in one tsp. of water mixed with two tbsp. of honey.

Types

Ideally, uncoated 325 mg aspirin should be used for an aspirin and honey acne remedy. Coated aspirin can be used, but it takes longer to dissolve and may need more water than the uncoated type. Use only pure aspirin tablets with no other additives or additional medicines.

Honey varieties are numerous and vary from place to place. Locally produced honey is a popular choice for an aspirin and honey acne treatment. All honey contains antibacterial properties, so the type you choose to mix with your aspirin is a matter of preference.

Effects

An aspirin and honey combination is used on the face to reduce redness and inflammation due to acne. It is applied to the skin to reduce the size of existing pimples and to clear the skin with repeated use. It is also used to perk up a dull looking complexion by reducing redness and can soften the skin.

Time Frame

Skin brightening and softening results can be seen after one use due to the exfoliation that occurs through the graininess of the aspirin and the pore-reducing effect of the combined ingredients. The salicylic acid of the aspirin, a usual ingredient in drugstore acne medicine, reduces the appearance in the size of pimples and begins to noticeably clear them with the first aspirin and honey treatment. Maintain results and tame new breakouts as needed, but do not apply the mask more than once a week.

Warning

Aspirin and honey masks can irritate your face, so test a small area by applying the mixture and leaving it on the skin for two minutes, then rinsing and waiting 24 hours to see if there has been any adverse reaction. Do not use the aspirin and honey combination if your skin develops a rash or irritation.

Use the mask no more than once a week because of the high concentration of salicylic acid.

How to Use a Rife Frequency Generator

How to Use a Rife Frequency Generator

The Rife frequency generator is used to kill harmful bacteria in the body with low intensity sound, or ultrasound. During a session, an array of sounds is transmitted to the body in radio frequency range to create sympathetic resonance that vibrates the bacteria until it explodes or returns to a healthy state. The generators use either a light tube or electrode pads to deliver the sound frequencies. Many companies make Rife-type generators offering a wide range of electrode device options, timing features and frequency programming capabilities.

Instructions

    1

Review the frequency generator user manual before using the machine. Make a list of symptoms. Include chronic and recent ailments.

    2

Look up the Rife frequencies for healing your symptoms and write them down. Program the frequencies into the unit. Generally, run each frequency for 1 to 2 minutes. Limit your time on the unit to 5 hours a day.

    3

Dress in loose-fitting clothing. Position your body in a comfortable chair or lie down and dim the lights. Do not eat before or during using the unit -- keep your stomach empty. Drink water before and after the session. Remove all metal from the body if using a pads unit.

    4

Run the session. Keep a record of how you respond to the frequencies.

How to Use Colloidal Silver in Lungs

How to Use Colloidal Silver in Lungs

Colloidal silver is a liquid that been used to treat a number of ailments, and it can get into the system quickest by inhaling it directly into the lungs. This can be done with a nebulizer. This could also add to the healing effects of the silver on lung infections, bronchitis, pneumonia and other respiratory ailments. While the silver is touted as effectively healing conditions sometimes in as few as a single a dose, it also must be remembered that it is still in the experimental stages. Any silver should be used with extreme caution and preferably after speaking with a medical expert.

Instructions

    1

Get your nebulizer. Any size nebulizer is fine, just make sure that it will be available when you want to take a dose of medicine. This may sway you to a smaller, portable unit. The site Silver Medicine suggests building your own nebulizer that hooks up to an oxygen tank, so that pure oxygen can be used to blast through the liquid silver to turn it into a mist. See the Resources section for a link.

    2

Make sure that you have a true colloidal silver that has been mixed only with distilled water. Silver Medicine warns never to inhale a silver product that may have been combined with proteins, salts or other chemicals as it could lead to silver poisoning.

    3

Test for an allergic reaction. Spray the mist on your skin to test for a possible allergic reaction. The mist should be invisible but leave a find spray on your hand when tested. If you are allergic, patches of gray will appear. Find another method of relief. Test for other reactions by taking the silver orally before inhaling it if it is your first time taking the silver. Wait several hours to see if an adverse reaction occurs before proceeding.

    4

Decide on your dosage. The daily dosage of colloidal silver is usually between 1/2 and 1 oz. Start with the smaller amount and pick a schedule that seems to work.

    5

Set up your nebulizer. Place 1/2 oz. of the silver in the nebulizer's basin. Follow the instructions on the nebulizer's manual. If you are using a nebulizer hooked up to an oxygen tank, Silver Medicine recommends the pressure be between 20 and 35 psi.

    6

Inhale the silver. If you have passed the allergy test and the nebulizer is set to go, begin your inhalation. Experiment with a schedule. Different schedules will administer the same amount of silver, but the silver can be inhaled in a short time span or drawn out throughout the day. Doses can be broken down into half doses and administered twice a day, broken down into four doses and administered four times a day and so on. Time can vary from 15 minutes to four hours between doses or whatever amount you choose.

    7

Stop usage if you start to feel confused, unstable or start to have severe mood swings. This could mean the silver product contains impurities.

What Is Ginseng Root?

What Is Ginseng Root?

American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) is a perennial herb that grows from Maine along the eastern seaboard to Alabama. In 1970, it was harvested to the point that the United States had to list it as an endangered species. This herb has a variety of uses and is currently exported by 18 states.

About

The ginseng herb has become a profitable crop due to the useful root it produces. The root of the ginseng plant is reported to serve a variety of uses, including lowering blood sugar, preventing stress and promoting relaxation. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ginseng is a "generally recognized safe food."

History

Once wild, ginseng started being cultivated commercially in the late 1800s. Although early attempts at growing the herb failed to be profitable, the Fromm brothers planted 100 plants in 1904 in Marathon County, Wisconsin, where the weather and soil conditions were favorable for the crop. Their discovery has led to this county becoming the number one producer of ginseng within the United States, providing 10 percent of the world's supply. In 1990, farmers in this county harvested $70 million worth of ginseng.

Growth

Ginseng is planted from seeds in the fall. From the time it is planted, it takes three to five years to grow to the point that it can be harvested and exported. At this point, the root of the plant measures 3 to 8 inches long and 1/4 to 1 inch in thickness. Roots ready for export will feature circular ridges and are soft and waxy in texture when broken. If the root is dry or glassy in appearance, it is less valuable.

Harvest & Storage

Roots that have reached the desired size are harvested in the fall. Once harvested, they are washed thoroughly and handled with care to avoid damaging the color or circular markings that are present on top-quality roots. Once washed, ginseng roots are placed on a wire netting in a well-ventilated and heated room to promote drying. This process starts with the room at 60 to 80 degrees F and lasts for four to six weeks, during which the temperature is increased until it reaches 90 degrees F. After they're dried, roots should be stored in dry containers that can't be accessed by rodents.

Export & Import

Ginseng is a common ingredient in Asian food products sold in the United States. American-grown ginseng is more costly than Korean-grown ginseng. As such, most of the ginseng grown in the United States is exported, while the United State imports ginseng from Korea for sale in America. In the Far Eastern countries where ginseng is common, it is used in toothpaste, soft drinks, candy, teas, cigarettes and gum. The product can also be purchased whole, as crystals, extract or powdered capsules.

Tea & Bladder Infections

Tea & Bladder Infections

Bladder infections affect more than 10 million Americans, and more than half of women will experience a bladder infection in their lifetime. While there are prescription drugs available to treat bladder infections, some have found natural remedies to be more effective. Cranberry juice is a common aid to easing bladder infection pain, but scientists and herbalists agree that tea can bring relief as well.

Tea can help to relieve bladder infection symptoms
Tea can help to relieve bladder infection symptoms

Effects

Tea can help to relieve symptoms of a bladder infection as well as flush out the bacteria that cause the infection. Some herbal teas, such as yarrow, uva ursi and goldenrod, are believed to cure bladder infections. Other types of tea soothe pain and reduce inflammation. Tea can also help protect the lining of the bladder, preventing future infections.

Herbal Teas

Yarrow, parsley, uva ursi and goldenrod teas help to actually cure a bladder infection, working to flush out bacteria. Nettle, dandelion, horsetail, corn silk, and cramp bark teas work to soothe inflammation and calm pain and backaches associated with bladder infections. These teas can be made by steeping one teaspoon of the herb in one cup of hot water. Uva ursi is a powerful herb that should be used under medical supervision. It is not safe for pregnant women and has unpleasant overdose symptoms such as vomiting and nausea.

Green tea

Green tea has special antioxidants that can help protect the bladder from future infections. In a study conducted by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, green tea protected bladder cells that were exposed to hydrogen peroxide. Urology and gynecology professor Michael B. Chancellor, M.D. stated that test results indicted "herbal supplements from green tea could be a treatment option for various bladder conditions that are caused by injury or inflammation."

Theories

Though tea is considered to be a remedy for bladder infections, it is also seen as a cause of bladder problems. Some teas contain caffeine, which dehydrates the body and irritates the bladder. To see the benefit of tea while suffering from a bladder infection or trying to prevent one, drink only herbal, non-caffeinated teas. Drink plenty of water as well. Staying hydrated will naturally flush the bladder of toxins and bacteria.

Prevention

To prevent bladder infections, stay hydrated and use the bathroom every three hours during the day. Avoid tight-fitting pants and caffeinated beverages. Spicy foods and alcohol can also irritate the bladder. Keep sensitive areas clean and dry, and drink herbal teas to help protect the bladder from future infections. Never ignore a bladder infection, as it could become more serious and affect the kidneys.

How to Use Garlic to Treat Athlete's Foot

How to Use Garlic to Treat Athlete's Foot

Athlete's foot is a fungal infection located on the surface of the skin on the feet. This condition can be caused by several different fungi, but a traditional home remedy of garlic can treat it.

Instructions

    1

Buy several cloves of fresh garlic or look for garlic supplements or products labeled allium sativum. You can usually find the best selection at a whole foods or health food store.

    2

Take the garlic cloves home and prepare a footbath. Use a tub of water big enough for your feet to fit in and fill it with warm water. Add just a splash of rubbing alcohol.

    3

Crush 2 to 4 cloves of garlic until it is very fine. Add the crushed garlic to the footbath. Soak your feet in this for about 30 minutes. Put a towel under the water basin and be careful not to spill when you put your feet in the water.

    4

Use garlic oil applied directly to the infected area to treat athlete's foot. Prepare garlic oil by mincing several cloves and placing them in a jar. Add enough olive oil to cover the garlic completely. Cover the mixture and allow it to sit for about 3 days, giving the jar a good shake a few times per day.

    5

Soak a cotton ball in the garlic oil and then rub it directly onto the skin. A washcloth will also work just fine. Repeat this process twice per day until the athlete's foot clears up.

Neuromuscular Massage Therapy

Neuromuscular Massage Therapy

According to the Center for Neuromuscular Massage Therapy website, the use of massage therapy has been around for over 4,000 years. In Ancient Greece healers such as Hippocrates used massage as a form of therapy to treat patients for a variety of conditions. Today, neuromuscular massage therapy is one form of massage used to treat a variety of injuries and conditions.

Neuromuscular

Neuromuscular massage therapy, or trigger point therapy, is the use of concentrated pressure applied to particular areas of pain or injury. Pressure is applied to injured areas using the fingertips, knuckles, hands and elbows for between 10 and 30 seconds at a time. Areas that are massaged during neuromuscular therapy include the muscles, tendons, ligaments and connective tissue, according to the Body Technician website.

Injuries

Neuromuscular therapy can be used to treat a variety of injuries and conditions, the most common being muscle spasms according to Spine Health. Neck injuries, such as whiplash, can also be treated with neuromuscular therapy. Conditions causing back pain, such as sciatica and hip pain, can also be treated. Problems with the head such as headaches, migraines, facial and jaw injuries are another type of pain that can be treated by neuromuscular therapy. The Center for Neuromuscular Therapy says tingling and numbness in the limbs, and carpel tunnel syndrome are commonly treated with neuromuscular therapy.

Ischemia

The treatment of ischemic muscle tissue is commonly completed with neuromuscular therapy. The Spine Health website reports the condition known as ischemia leaves muscles tender and sore to the touch. This soreness is caused by a lack of blood pumping through the muscle due to poor circulation leaving the muscle starved of oxygen, which in turn causes the muscle to produce lactic acid making the muscle tight and tender to the touch after physical exertion. Spine Health explains that when neuromuscular therapy is completed on the ischemic muscle tissue, the circulation of blood and oxygen is restored to the muscle dispersing the lactic acid.

Effects

The effects of neuromuscular therapy on a patient are described by Spine Health as being felt within 24 and 36 hours following the therapy. Pain and tenderness should be reduced with the muscles remaining relaxed for between four and 14 days following the therapy.

Lifestyle

Lifestyle and levels of stress can have a great effect on the ability of muscles to remain relaxed and recover from an injury. Spine Health reports stress levels can affect the impact of therapy on the muscles, while the severity of problems and the previous activity level of a patient can affect how long neuromuscular therapy remains effective.

Uses for Peppermint Oil Capsules

Peppermint is one of the most popular essential oils used for a variety of ailments. The most common ailment that peppermint oil is used to treat is indigestion. Peppermint oil can be in capsule form and ingested whole, broken apart or mixed with water. Depending on the type of problem, methods of use will vary. If you need to remove the oil from the capsule, you can break it apart or insert a needle into it to extract the oil. Always consult your doctor before using peppermint oil.

Relieves Symptoms

In addition to indigestion, peppermint capsules relieve menstrual cramps, respiratory infection and throat infection and reduce fever, diarrhea, rheumatism, arthritis and anxiety. Follow all daily dosage recommendations.

Other Uses

Undiluted peppermint oil can be applied topically to the stomach to relieve nausea, travel sickness and morning sickness. Topical application also reduces swelling from injuries, relieves itching of skin and reduces symptoms of poison ivy and poison oak. Do not place undiluted peppermint oil directly on cuts or burns; instead, apply it around the affected area by rubbing the oil into the skin.

Peppermint oil can also be placed on the tongue for a variety of purposes. It can reduce bad breath, clear congested sinuses and promote concentration and mental alertness.

Mix peppermint oil in water and drink as a tea to improve memory and concentration. One drop of peppermint oil in water is an alternative for reducing indigestion.

Heat a pan of water with three drops of peppermint oil and inhale the fumes to relieve chest congestion and stop a headache.

Peppermint oil can be rubbed on and around a painful tooth to relieve pain or mixed with water and used as a mouthwash.

Peppermint oil can even be mixed into paint before painting to reduce paint fumes.

Pets, Animals and Insects

Not only is peppermint oil effective for people, but it helps pets as well. Apply a small amount of peppermint oil from a capsule onto a tick and the tick will release from the skin for easy removal. Mix one drop of peppermint oil in a spray bottle full of water and spray on the pet's coat to deter fleas and deodorize the pet's hair.

If roaches, mice, spiders or ants are a problem in the home, place a cotton ball soaked in peppermint oil in strategic locations to keep the annoying critters away.

How to Use Cupping Therapy to Enhance Breathing

How to Use Cupping Therapy to Enhance Breathing

Massage cupping creates suction and negative pressure to drain excess fluids and toxins from the body. It's also loosens adhesions and lifts connective tissue, increasing blood flow to your muscles and skin. This action can relieve breathing issues.

Instructions

    1

Determine what type of cupping therapy you would like to experience. Stationary and moving cupping are the traditional forms, and each has a different benefit. To relieve colds, congestion and asthma related conditions, stationary cupping is often the better choice.

    2

Speak with a certified massage therapist if you do not have experience with deep tissue massage therapy. Learn how a massage therapist employs cupping by watching her perform on someone.

    3

Purchase a set of cups either through a massage therapy supply store or in health stores. Cups are available in different sizes and have manual suction or more advanced cupping therapy options for creating heat related suction.

    4

Place the cups in a circular pattern on the affected area and allow them to sit for 5 to 15 minutes. Remove them following the same pattern.

    5

Treat meridians as discussed in traditional Chinese medicine. Cups can be placed on certain areas along the meridian lines to treat specific parts of the body which may help alleviate other breathing problems and associated symptoms. Go online to find a meridian chart or buy a book on Chinese medicine to learn the location of the points.

Natural Remedy for Dry Mouth & Bad Breath

Lick your hand, then sniff your saliva. This is how you can tell if you have bad breath, according to cardiovascular surgeon, author and talk show host, Mehmet Oz, M.D. If you have dry mouth, which leads to bad breath, you're not producing enough saliva which may indicate a serious health condition or disease. Dry mouth can have many causes. Practice natural ways to produce more saliva, eliminate bad breath and restore your body to health.

Hygiene

Dry mouth can come from not drinking enough water. Drink half your weight in ounces of water daily to keep your mouth moist at all times. For example, if you weigh 160 lb., drink 80 oz. of water spread throughout the day. Also, breathe in through your nose, rather than your mouth.

Use a tongue scraper along the length of your tongue daily. This removes much of the odor-causing bacteria from your tongue. Rinse your mouth with an alcohol-free mouthwash. Alcohol causes dry mouth, leaving your mouth open to harmful bacteria. Brush your teeth with a soft toothbrush in the morning, after each meal, and before bedtime. Flossbetween your teeth daily, including between your gums and teeth.

Diet

Add more dark-green vegetables to your diet each day, like romaine lettuce, kale and spinach to cleanse your body internally. Chlorophyll gives green vegetables their green color and is a natural deodorant for your body, eliminating bad breath. Adding more green vegetables also increases the alkalinity or pH of your saliva and body. Dry mouth and bad breath come from a more acidic body, attracting harmful bacteria and disease.

Take chlorophyll supplements each day to cleanse your body internally and prevent bad breath. Buy chlorophyll in tablet, capsule, powder, and liquid form at a natural health food store or online.

Chew on springs of parsley to keep your breath fresh. Also, chew sugar-free gum (sugarless gum contains some sugar) to stimulate saliva flow in your mouth.

Add cayenne pepper to your meals or even sprinkle a little on your tongue. Cayenne pepper naturally stimulates saliva flow. Drink green tea or take green tea extract, to help reduce dry mouth.

Stimulate saliva flow also by drinking ginger tea. Grate 1 tsp. of ginger root and stir it into a cup of hot water. Drink after steeping for two minutes. Buy ginger tea bags at a health food store or online. Sip slippery elm tea also to increase saliva flow, found at health food stores in loose or in tea bags.

Environment

Use a humidifier in your home. The air can become very dry because of heating in the winter, contributing to dry mouth. During the summer, air conditioners also create dry environments.

Warnings

Consult your doctor if you have dry mouth. Dry mouth can indicate a serious disease, a prescription drug side effect or salivary gland trauma called, Sjogren's disease.

Avoid using decongestants as they dry out your mouth.

Avoid refined sugar, alcohol, cigarettes and caffeinated beverages--they contribute to dry mouth and bad breath.

How to Get Rid of Black Moles on the Face

Black moles on the face are often a cause for embarrassment. They can make people look older than they are and can cause problems with self-esteem. Removing these moles can be a long process if done at home and, before any attempt is made to remove any mole, it should be looked at by a doctor in case the mole is cancerous. Assuming your doctor has declared your moles harmless, how do you go about removing them? One way is surgery, either by the doctor or a plastic surgeon. The other, less expensive way, is to try one or more home remedies for facial moles.

Instructions

Removing Black Face Moles With Garlic

    1

Crush a clove of garlic in a tea cup using the back of a spoon. Take your time and crush it well until the clove is primarily juice. Use a cotton swab to apply a generous amount of the garlic juice to the mole on your face and cover the mole with a bandage to hold the juice in place. Leave the bandage and the juice on your mole for 10 hours, then remove the bandage and gently wash your face with warm water.

    2

Repeat Step 1 each day for 10 days. At the end of 10 days the mole should be drying up and should appear ready to fall off. If so, gently rub the dry mole with a cotton swab until it falls off.

    3

Using your cotton swab, dab on a generous amount of vitamin E oil and cover with a bandage for 12 hours. At the end of 12 hours remove the bandage and gently wash with warm water and soap. Reapply the vitamin E oil and bandage and leave on for an additional 12 hours. Repeat this process for three days. This should reduce or eliminate any scarring.

Removing Black Face Moles With Onion and Rock Salt

    4

Crush 1/4 of a raw onion in a tea cup with the back of a spoon until the onion is primarily juice. Add 1/2 teaspoon of rock salt and stir until most of the salt has dissolved.

    5

Apply this mixture directly to your mole using a cotton swab and cover with a bandage. Leave on overnight. Remove bandage and gently wash face with soap and water. Repeat this procedure every day for 10 days.

    6

Gently rub the now-dry mole with a cotton swab until it falls off. Rub on a liberal amount of vitamin E with a cotton swab and cover with a bandage overnight. Repeat the vitamin E application each day for seven days to reduce scarring.

Removing Black Face Moles With Apple Cider Vinegar

    7

Apply apple cider vinegar to your mole with a cotton swab and cover with a bandage over night then remove the bandage and wash with warm soapy water. Dry and reapply the apple cider vinegar and cover with a bandage.

    8

Repeat this process each day for 10 days until the mole is dry and ready to fall off.

    9

Gently rub the mole with a cotton swab until it falls off and then apply vitamin E and cover with a bandage over night. remove bandage and wash face, then reapply the vitamin E and bandage and continue this process for seven days to reduce scarring.

How to Get Rid of a Yeast Infection Naturally

How to Get Rid of a Yeast Infection Naturally

A yeast infection is caused by candida albicans, or candidiasis, a fungus that is normally present in you body but usually in small concentrations. The infection starts when the yeast starts proliferating. This infection is very uncomfortable as the yeast causes itching and burning. There are several remedies that you can find in your home to start combating the yeast infection immediately.

Instructions

    1

Use plain yogurt as a suppository to naturally cure your yeast infection. Yogurt contains lactobacillus acidophilus, which kills the candida. The best way to insert the yogurt into your vagina is by using the plastic tampon applicators. Fill them with yogurt and place them in the freezer. Once frozen, insert the yogurt. The cold yogurt will help soothe the burning caused by the yeast. A yogurt and water douche can also be used to treat the infection.

    2

Insert a clove of garlic that has been peeled and wrapped in cheesecloth then tied off with a dental floss to effectively treat a yeast infection. The dental floss should be long enough to pull the clove out. This remedy is at its best when the clove can remain in position for several hours, therefore use it overnight. Repeat the treatment until the yeast infection is curbed.

    3

Apply some tea tree oil onto a tampon and insert the tampon vaginally. Before applying the tree tea oil, apply a small amount of KY jelly to stop the oil from being absorbed into the tampon.

    4

Make a douche using either 1 tsp. of hydrogen peroxide or 1 tbsp. of vinegar mixed with a cup of water. Use this douche once a day until your symptoms disappear.

    5

Drink fresh cranberry juice or eat cranberries to help reduce your vaginal pH.

    6

Take Acidophilus tablets. You can find them at your local health food store. The capsules can even be used as a suppository.

How to Use Home Remedies to Treat Food Poisoning

How to Use Home Remedies to Treat Food Poisoning

Food poisoning can happen anywhere: picnics, restaurants, or even from your food at home. Food poisoning usually occurs because someone prepares food without clean hands, transferring bacteria to the food. It will also happen if the food is not thoroughly cooked. The result may just feel like a bad case of the flu. However, if your symptoms include symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or dehydration, you should go to the hospital. A lot of food poisoning cases can be taken care of at home and even before the symptoms occur.

Instructions

    1

Flush your system out with as many fluids as possible. When you think you might have food poisoning, getting the poison out of your body is important. Vomiting is common and will get rid of the bacteria that is causing the food poisoning, but it will also flush out the important things such as potassium, sodium and glucose. By drinking water and juice or Gatorade, you will get back those important electrolytes as well as get rid of the food poisoning.

    2

Mix some fruit juice (for potassium), a little bit of honey or corn syrup, and a pinch of salt to help flush your system out. You can use this mixture instead of or with Gatorade to flush out your system and retain important electrolytes.

    3

Drink an herbal tea mixture of mint, blackberry, chamomile and raspberry. Sip it slowly. This will help you relax and ease the pain of the cramps.

    4

Eat some bread. Bread will help soak up some of the poison and give you some relief. As soon as you start to feel the symptoms, eat a couple of pieces of bread to prevent some of the after effects such as vomiting and diarrhea.

    5

Rest as much as you can. If the symptoms are not too bad and there is no need to go to the hospital, cancel any plans you have and stay home and rest. Let the food poisoning run its course.

How Does Nattokinase Work in the Blood Stream?

How Does Nattokinase Work in the Blood Stream?

Nattokinase is the enzyme found in traditional Japanese soy cheese (natto), which has been shown to exhibit a fibrinolytic effect in the blood stream. That is, it has the ability to break down blood clots. Nattokinase was identified in 1980 by Dr. Hiroyuki Sumi from Miyazaki Medical College in Japan while studying in Chicago. Since its discovery, the cardiovascular effects of nattokinase has been studied in the United States and abroad. Nattokinase has been shown to play a role similar to plasmin, an enzyme that breaks down clots. In addition, as a selective plaque-dissolving enzyme, it also shows benefits in ophthalmology and Alzheimer's therapy as well as cardiovascular treatment.

Blood Clots

A blood clot forms when blood platelets, fibrinogen and red blood cells aggregate in the presence of clotting factors. A blood clot, or thrombus, serves as a plug to heal an injury such as a cut. Internally, blood clots aid in blood vessel repair. A embolus forms when part of a thrombus becomes mobile and migrates to another part of the body through the blood vessels such as the heart or brain and blocks circulation. Plasmin is the enzyme that breaks down a blood clot (i.e., fibrinolysis).

Mechanism of Action

Nattokinase has been clinically described as a subtilisin-like (bacterial) serine protease. Serine proteases are enzymes that digest or dissolve proteins. Bacterial (subtilisn) serine proteases have the same mechanism of action as those of mammals but differ in structure. Several clotting factors are serine proteases such as thrombin and plasmin. As a type of serine protease, nattokinase has a similar effect as plasmin, in dissolving clots by breaking down the proteins in fibrin and increasing the concentration of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). In dissolving clots on vessel walls, nattokinase supports maintaining the integrity of the blood vessels.

Scientific Studies

Nattokinase has been extracted and purified and prepared in powder form for oral administration. Participants in clinical studies received either placebo or nattokinase. The blood tests showed that an increase in fibrinolytic activity (dissolution of blood clots) and decrease in blood pressure among participants receiving nattokinase. Other studies have shown that as a thrombolytic agent, nattokinase inhibited arterial wall thickening. In vitro studies have shown that nattokinase is a more potent fibrinolytic agent than plasmin; however, the effects of nattokinase continue only with maintained use.
