Ephedra, sometimes called ma huang, refers to a Chinese herb previously sold as a weight loss supplement and athletic performance enhancer. Ephedra stimulates the central nervous system and increases heart rate. The Federal Drug Administration banned over-the-counter supplements containing ephedra in May 2004.

Efficacy

    Ephedra causes short-term weight loss, but since the drug also increases blood pressure, the weight loss does not improve health, according to the FDA. It also works as an effective bronchodilator, which can treat asthma attacks. However, doctors usually recommend other treatments that have fewer safety concerns, according to the Mayo Clinic. Studies have not been performed on the effects of ephedra on athletic performance.

Safety

    According to a Southern California Evidence-based Practice Center-RAND study, ephedra use in clinical trials is associated with nausea, vomiting, mood changes, anxiety, palpitations and autonomic hyperactivity. Ephedra also reportedly caused seizures, stroke, myocardial infection and death in other users.

Considerations

    Synthetic compounds derived from ephedra, such as ephedrine, are still available in over-the-counter decongestants and cold remedies, such as pseudoephedrine.

Homemade Remedies for Fingernail Fungus

Oregano Essential Oil and AHA

    Mix together 2 drops of oregano essential oil with 1 tsp. of olive oil. Dab this mixture onto the affected area daily. Do not use for more than three weeks. Oregano essential oil has strong antiseptic, antibacterial, antiviral, analgesic and anti-fungal properties are useful in treating nail fungus.

    Apply AHA or alpha hydroxy acid creams to your nails at night to remove any scaly or rough skin that may accompany the nail infection. This helps clear up the skin that may be contributing to the growth of the fungus.

    In addition to trying homemade remedies for fingernail fungus, be sure to keep your hands clean and dry. Avoid the overuse of nail polish, as this prevents air from circulating around the nail. Radiation treatment around the head and neck can affect the thyroid. Also, certain medications may slow down the thyroid. Less often, hypothyroidism has been found to be caused by a congenital disease, pituitary disorder, pregnancy or iodine deficiency.

Diet

    The first thing to begin changing to help your thyroid is your diet. Fresh fruits and vegetables are a rich source of enzymes that can help the chemical reactions in the thyroid that produce the needed hormones.

Supplement

    Since thyroid hormones are derivatives of iodine, consider using supplements rich in iodine. Supplements containing kelp would be a good sources. Vitamins A, C, E and B complex should be taken to provide the thyroid with the needed nutrients to make the hormones. Hot and cold therapies are the two most-popular methods of treatment used as first aid for some injuries, pains or discomforts. The treatments have been used for centuries and their effectiveness is well recognized. However, whether to use hot therapy or cold therapy on a specific pain or injury is often confusing.

Purpose of Hot Therapy

    Hot therapy or moist therapy is best used on chronic conditions or for persistent aches such as muscle discomforts and stiffness. Heat works by drawing blood into the targeted tissues and subsequently lets oxygen and nutrients pass through efficiently. This method also removes cell wastes in the process. The sensation caused by heat energy relaxes tense muscles, decreases muscle spasm and relieves pain, since it tends to relax the walls of blood vessels.

    There are many forms of heat therapy available, including hot and moist compresses, dry or moist heating pads, hydrotherapy and commercial chemicals or gel packs. The appropriate temperature is about 104 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit and the proper duration of application is around five to 30 minutes.

    To prevent your skin from burning while applying hot therapy, its best to wrap hot packs in any form with a towel before using. You should also immediately get rid of hot packs found with any punctures, as the chemical agent or gel will definitely burn your skin.

    Although heat is known to reduce muscle spasms, it should not be used on sprained or strained ankles. Purpose of Cold Therapy

    Cold therapy, also known as cryotherapy, produces a vasoconstriction effect by slowing the circulation and decreasing inflammation, swelling and pain. Amazingly, it is also known to provide aid and reduce muscle spasm akin to hot therapy. The pain-killing effect of cold treatment is due to its ability to prevent nerve-cell activity. Most of the time, application of cold therapy reduces the pain of injuries, according to hospital studies.

    Cold therapy comes in a variety of forms. These include a selection of commercial packs, ice cubes, iced towels/compresses and hydrotherapy. The treatment should generally be applied for less than 15 minutes. Cold therapy tends to provide relief for a longer period of time than heat therapy.

    To prevent skin and nerve damage while using cold therapy, do not to apply cold or ice directly to your skin. Always use a barrier such as a towel between the cold agent and your skin. Sehnert, M.D., suggests increasing your vitamin C intake by drinking grapefruit, cranberry and orange juices. Elson Haas, M.D., suggests trying lozenges supplemented with zinc that are flavored with citrus or honey. Haas warns against using more than the recommended daily dosage; high amounts of zinc can be toxic.

Hass also recommends taking two to three oil-free garlic capsules three times a day to remedy chest colds; garlic has an antibiotic affect which can kill cold germs and shorten the duration of chest cold symptoms.

Stomach Acid 101

    Betaine hydrochloric acid, or stomach acid, is a necessary secretion that helps you digest the food you eat; especially proteins. Low Acid

This is often a missed diagnosis, so bring up the possibility of low stomach acid before you simply start taking acid reducers or you can make your problem worse.

Other Problems Caused by Salt Deficiency

    Salt deficiency can also result in edema (swelling), fatigue and sometimes confusion. Rather than severely limit sodium intake, it's better to increase water intake. If your body perceives that you are not taking in enough salt to function well, your body will attempt to retain the salt which results in edema and water retention. Enough salt and enough water are absolutely necessary to the proper function of your metabolism.

Not All Salt is Worth Its Salt

    Salt as we encounter it in Western society is simply sodium chloride. This isn't really salt in its best form because it has been processed and heated to make it white and pretty rather than nutrient rich. Salt in its pure form contains at least eighty trace minerals that are good for your body. Rather than raising blood pressure, reasonable quantities of minimally processed sea salt can actually help lower blood pressure. This is because it provides you with potassium, calcium, magnesium and other helpful minerals. Studies have shown that increasing calcium intake actually lowers blood pressure better than lowering sodium intake (Dr. David McCarron, Oregon Health Sciences University, 1991-quoted in New York Times article "Hypertension Research Challenges Role of Salt," Elisabeth Rosenthal).

Pinworms are roundworm parasites that rely on the human body as a host for survival. You can get pinworms after consuming infested food or through unwashed hands. You can make an infusion of Quassia by soaking 12g of the shavings for 12 hours in a pint of cold water. After soaking, strain the mixture and consume 1 oz. of the mix three times a day. Since Quassia has a bitter flavor, you can also mix it in ginger tea to make it more palatable; use 1 to 2 droppersful of Quassia tincture to a cup of ginger tea. You should not consume more than 1 to 2g of Quassia a day. Pregnant women should refrain from using this remedy, because the effects on the fetus have not been determined.

Rue

    Rue contains rutin, which helps suppress worm infections. Rue is derived from Ruta; it is a flavonoid that can be toxic to animals and/or humans in excessive doses. This herb has a bitter flavor; you can consume the tincture by adding 1 to 2 droppersful to a cup of water. Consume this two to three times daily to manage pinworm infections. This herb can upset your stomach, and it can increase your sensitivity to sunlight. This herb is not recommended for pregnant women since it stimulates the uterus. It is also not recommended for those with kidney problems.

Wormwood

    Wormwood is an excellent herb for digestive ailments; this herb helps to improve your appetite, stimulates your stomach bile, and is an effective remedy against pinworms. You can make a tea out of wormwood by brewing 1 oz. of the herb in 10 oz. hot water for 15 minutes. Strain the mixture and consume cup before each meal three times daily. This remedy should not be used by pregnant women or breastfeeding women, and you should not consume more than 1 grams of wormwood two to three times a day to avoid toxicity.

    Get started. The perfect massage will relax muscles, relieve tension, increase flexibility, provide harmony, reduce stress and discomfort and even increase body circulation. So how to accomplish this feat? Through massage. There are many types of massage therapy such as acupressure, Swedish, reflexology, thai massage and even hot stone therapy. Because it takes special certification to learn techniques for many speciality massages we will stick with the tips on how to give just a basic massage.

    Use the right tools. While not required, the perfect massage will most likely include the use of massage oil or lotions to decrease the friction created by kneading your skin. The use of oil or lotion also increased the amount of pressure you are able to provide. You can find massage oil almost anywhere and it doesn't have to be expensive to get the job done. Even a simple lotion you have at home can work. Be sure to warm the oil or lotion in your hands before applying.

    Positioning. While not necessary to remove all clothing for a massage it does make it easier to give the perfect massage. Have the person receiving the massage lie on their stomach and remove their shirt so you can access their back easily. Again, there are many types of massage and specialty massage. Most people think of their back when it comes to massage so a nice back massage can be the "perfect massage" without getting too fancy.

    Stand (or kneel if you have to, depending on location) next to the person you are massageing. Soft strokes, often called effleurage are the most common technique used to move from one area to another. As you are working in long strokes on the back and come across an area such as a knot (which is just a pocket of localized deep tissue) work in a circular motion and lightly increase pressure.

    To make a transition to another stroke after gently massaging in long strokes down the back you can glide your hands up to the area around the neck and base of the head. Use slow movements for a soothing or calming response and fast movements for a stimulating effect.

    Now expand your efforts to the neck, head, mid-back, shoulders, arms and buttocks. Work on one area of the body at a time, remembering long strokes as you transition from one area to the next. The circular kneading motion is great for really fleshy areas such as the shoulders and buttocks as you release pressure from the tight muscles.

    Remember to use your fingers and thumbs to apply pressure as needed to sensitive "knot" areas. These areas will often feel hard or tight to the touch. Don't forget to massage the arms and feet of the person as well at the end of the massage. Paying extra attention to the extremities will increase blood flow and relaxation.

    FInish off the massage with long strokes (effleurage) to again gently relax the person you are massaging and bring the massage to a close. Congratulations--you have given a perfect massage.

Directions for Use

    Rub the ointment into each of the skin tags twice daily. It may take several days or a couple of weeks, but the tags will shrivel and fall off. Neti, or nasal cleansing, has been practiced in Ayurvedic medicine and as part of yoga purification routines for hundreds of years. Warm, salted water is poured into one nostril using a specially-designed container shaped similarly to a small tea pot. The head is angled such that the stream of water pours out the other nostril, removing bacteria, mucus and allergens, and opening up the nasal passages.

    Pour the lukewarm water and the salt into the neti pot, and replace the lid. Be sure to use lukewarm water, as hot water will be irritating to the nasal passages and cold water is not soothing.

    Tilt the head to the left, tuck the chin to the chest and carefully insert the pointed spout of the neti pot into the right nostril, while standing over a sink and in front of a mirror.

    Breathe through the mouth, and raise the neti pot until a steady stream of salt water is coming out of the left nostril.

    Continue the process until all of the salt water has been poured through the nasal passages. Remove the spout of the neti pot from the right nostril, and exhale several times to clear any residual salt water.

    Black strap molasses has been lauded as a home remedy for many different types of ailments, ranging from treating anemia to acid reflux. Along with these conditions, black strap molasses has shown promise in treating gray hair. Mix 1 tsp. of black strap molasses into your morning coffee and drink it daily. You can also take 1 tsp. of black strap molasses, followed by a chaser of 1 cup of orange juice, which will help mitigate the awful taste of the black strap molasses.

Vitamin B12

    To treat gray hair that is occurring because of a vitamin B12 deficiency, consume more meat, milk and eggs. Vitamin B12 deficiency can happen after gastric bypass surgery, so supplement your body with extra vitamin B12 either through diet or supplements.

Rosemary and Sage Rinse

    To treat gray hair, make a rinse with the herbs rosemary and sage. Take 1/4 cup of rosemary and 1/2 cup of sage and boil them in 2 cups of water for 30 minutes. Remove from the heat and steep the mixture for between 2 to 3 hours. Apply it to the hair as a rinse, and let it dry completely. Shampoo as you normally would, then rinse. Repeat weekly, then maintain the color by repeating monthly.

Amla Berry Powder

    Amla berry is a popular remedy in India for use in treating and maintaining hair. You can find amla powder in some Indian or Asian grocery stores. To treat gray hair with amla berry powder, mix 1 tsp. of the powder with 1 tsp. of lemon juice and 2 tbsp. of coconut oil. Massage the mixture into the scalp and leave it in overnight. Shampoo your hair as usual in the morning. If you are unable to leave it in overnight, allow the mixture to remain on the scalp for at least 15 minutes before shampooing.
