Home Remedy for Stretch Marks on the Breasts

Stretch marks are sometimes caused by fluctuations in body weight and often occur with pregnancy. Stretch marks on the breasts are no different from those elsewhere on the body. First appearing as red marks or lines, stretch marks eventually fade to white, often disappearing completely. While no home remedy can permanently eliminate stretch marks, you can use the following techniques to help fade their appearance.

Options

Techniques for fading stretch marks usually involve moisturizing the skin. Rub cocoa butter into your skin for an easy way to soften and moisturize the area. Apply cocoa butter as often as you like to areas prone to stretch marks. Cocoa butter is available in a wide variety of lotions and creams, and can even be found in a solid stick form to use directly on stretch marks.

Vitamin E can also be helpful in the treatment of stretch marks. Break open a vitamin E capsule and apply directly to the affected area. Vitamin E when mixed with aloe vera and cocoa butter makes a particularly effective moisturizer.

Skin irritations and conditions of all kinds respond well to vitamin A. Vitamin A is a component in many skin care lotions and creams, and it can be used as a massage treatment for stretch marks.

Vitamin K, found in creams, is also useful as a home remedy for stretch marks. Apply generously twice a day to see results.

Make an aromatherapy-infused massage oil to help fade stretch marks. Combine a few teaspoons of sweet almond oil with a few drops of chamomile and lavender essential oils. Massage well into the affected area once or twice a day.

Daily exercise will maintain the condition of your skin. Also be sure to eat a healthy diet that will promote healthy skin and tissue growth. Consume foods with high levels of vitamins C and E and zinc. Examples are oranges, eggs, fish and flaxseed. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, which will hydrate your skin.

About Magnet Therapy and Back Pain

Magnetic therapy is a safe and natural form of healing that uses the electromagnetic field of magnets to heal the body. The negative side of the magnet is placed where there is pain. This pulls fresh oxygenated blood and nutrients to this area, removing toxins and acidity while increasing circulation and promoting healing. Magnet therapy can be a good way to manage the pain, improve sleep, and avoid missing work and possibly even invasive treatments like surgery.

Back Pain

Back pain may result from a problem in the muscles, such as a strain or tear. Lack of exercise and stress can cause muscle stiffening. Out of place bones, arthritis or disk problems can also result in acute and chronic back pain.

Pain with Magnets

When magnets are placed on the skin, usually with ordinary adhesive bandages, capillary walls relax so that blood can flow and release the pain. Muscle spasms can be the cause of back pain, and magnets can calm and prevent them. Although pain medications can help the pain, they can also have side effects and don't get to the root of the problem. Magnets don't have any side effects and can heal the root of the problem.

Studies Show Positive Results

A study published in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation discovered that real magnets were more effective than placebo magnets at controlling pain caused by postpolio syndrome. Three-quarters of the patients who used the magnets enjoyed relief from the pain, while only 18 percent who used the fake magnets got relief. Another study at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston revealed that magnets offer relief to people with fibromyalgia, which is a chronically painful condition.

Other Studies Show Magnets Have No Effect

A study at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine discovered that magnets did not have any effect on pain. Of both the control group and the placebo group 60 percent reported improvement. Another study in 2000 found no effect using magnets to treat back pain, and yet another study at the University of Virginia revealed that patients with fibromyalgia had no relief from magnets. Most scientist and doctors believe there is little evidence to support magnet therapy.

It's Worth a Try

There are studies to show that magnets are both helpful and not helpful. For those with chronic back pain, it is worth a try, since it is a natural and safe option. While some magnets cost up to $900.00, they can cost as little as $5.00. It is best to not spend a lot of money to just try it out. A coin-shaped magnet made of the rare earth metal neodymium-boron is a good magnet that doesn't cost a lot of money.

What Is Valerian Tea?

Valerian, or Valeriana officinalis, can help relieve stress, ease insomnia and reduce anxiety. An over-the-counter, herbal alternative to sleeping pills that have benzodiazepine, you can find valerian in the form of tea, extract, cut roots or capsules.

How to Use

Holistic Online warns against preparing valerian tea in boiling water, as it might drive off some of the oils, the most effective part of the plant. To prepare the tea, steep 2 teaspoons of valerian roots in 2 cups of warm water for an entire day. Take it before bedtime, after straining it and warming it up.

Side Effects

Valerian might not work for everyone, and could cause mild indigestion, headache, palpitations, and dizziness, giddiness or disorientation, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). Some people may experience allergic reactions such as rashes, hives or difficulty breathing. Also, the roots and liquid extract form of valerian have a strong, distinct smell that many people do not like.

The Herb

Valerian, a perennial herb, grows to about 4 to 5 feet in size, with clusters of pink or white flowers, notes Innvista.com. It blooms in June and July, growing in damp places all over the world, though native to Europe. Its oil mainly resides in the roots.

History

According to the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements, use of valerian as a natural sleeping aid began in ancient Greece and Rome, during the 9th century B.C. to 5th century A.D. In the 2nd century A.D., Roman physician and philosopher Galen prescribed it as an cure for insomnia. Over time, its uses broadened to treat "nervousness, trembling, headaches, and heart palpitations," in the 16th century, the ODS says, and to "relieve the stress of air raids" in England during World War II.

Etymology

When Galen prescribed valerian for insomnia, he called it "phu," for its pungent smell. In the 9th or 10th century it became known as valerian, deriving from the Latin verb "valere," meaning "to be happy," says Innvista.com.

Warning

Valerian users should avoid taking it with additional sedatives or anything that depresses the central nervous system, such as antihistamines. The ODS also cautions that pregnant women and children under 3 years old should not take valerian, due to lack of research on its effects.

How to Naturally Calm Perimenopause Symptoms

Perimenopause is the time of transition between having regular menstrual cycles and total cessation of menstrual cycles. This can last up to a decade and may include symptoms such as irregular periods, insomnia, vaginal dryness, hot flashes, depression, mood swings, decrease in sex drive, tenderness in the breasts, frequent urination and fatigue. Although there are conventional treatments, such as estrogen replacement therapy, choosing natural remedies may be a much better option, because they have little or no risk of dangerous side effects. Sometimes, making a few subtle changes in your diet and lifestyle, as well as adding certain herbs and supplements, can make a sizable improvement in your perimenopausal symptoms and contribute to your overall quality of health.

Instructions

    1

Take evening primrose oil capsules. Evening primrose oil comes from a North American biennial and has been known to help ease breast tenderness and pain. It should not be used if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have been diagnosed with mania or schizophrenia.

    2

Consider using damiana supplements, which come from a Central American shrub with aromatic, yellow flowers. This herb has long been used to help combat a low libido. Speak with your doctor before taking damiana if you have liver problems, suffer from diabetes, are pregnant or are on a prescription medication. Breastfeeding women should not take damiana. Make sure that you use a high-quality, reputable brand of damiana to avoid harmful added ingredients. Take as directed by the individual product you are using.

    3

Drink a cup of valerian root tea at bedtime to aid in falling to sleep, when needed. Valerian comes from a perennial found in parts of Asia, Europe and South Africa. The herb has been commonly used to treat insomnia and nervousness. It has a calming effect. Valerian should not be taken together with the herb skullcap, as the combination could have an adverse effect on the liver. You should avoid taking valerian if you are on anti-anxiety drugs, and valerian should only be used for a short term, when experiencing bouts of sleeplessness.

    4

Take dong quai supplements for vaginal dryness and irregular menstrual periods. Dong quai comes from a perennial commonly grown in areas of Asia and has been used for female complaints for centuries. When taking dong quai, use caution when being exposed to sunlight. Also, you should not take this herb if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, on the prescription drug warfarin or taking herbal blood thinners such as ginger, turmeric, garlic, feverfew or ginkgo biloba.

    5

Modify your diet to include more raw foods and limit meat and dairy products, which can contribute to hot flashes. Some common examples of raw foods are fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, raw honey, olives, fresh sprouts, seeds and nuts.

    6

Get regular exercise, which will help reduce many of your perimenopausal symptoms. Examples of exercises you can do are walking, swimming, water aerobics and strength-training exercises. You can also try tai chi and yoga, not only for their physical benefits but also to ease depression and stress.

Psoriasis Detox

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that shows up as scaly, dry red patches, most often on the scalp, ears and genitals. An auto-immune disorder, psoriasis is not contagious; unfortunately, it also is not curable. If you have this particular condition, however, you can try to minimize flare-ups. One of the ways to do so is to detoxify your system.

Detoxification Diet

Psoriasis often is associated with liver malfunction because the condition is linked to certain microbial byproducts in the blood, and these usually occur when the liver is overloaded with toxins. As a result, people with psoriasis can benefit from removing toxins from their liver in order to help clean and rebalance their system.

One way to cleanse the liver is through a detoxification diet. A naturopathic doctor can advise you about various detox diets available, but one of the basics of a detoxification diet is to drink lots of fresh water.

When you are not on a specific detox diet, you must eat a healthy, balanced diet in order to try to keep your psoriasis under control. Such a diet includes plenty of organic fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Herbal tea also is helpful in treating psoriasis. On the other hand, you should avoid caffeinated drinks, alcohol, fried foods, refined sugar, refined flour (white flour), unhealthy fats and spicy foods. In addition, people with psoriasis should stay away from shellfish, red meat and tropical fruits. People seeking to detoxify their livers can benefit from supplements that contain the vitamins A, D, E and K.

Herbal Supplements

Certain herbal supplements can improve your immune system and prevent the recurrence of psoriasis. Some used in tablets designed to treat psoriasis include Carthamus, Gardenia, Isatis Root, Lithospermum, Millettia, Moutan, Peony Red, Rehmannia Raw, Salvia, Smilax and Sophora (root). Other ingredients that are beneficial include betaine HCl, biotin, choline bitartrate, dandelion, dietary sulfur, inositol, garlic, globe artichoke, L-glutathione, N-acetyl-L-cysteine, L-methionine, milk thistle, niacin, parsley, riboflavin, selenomethionin, thiamine and turmeric.

Other Recommendations

Along with a healthy diet and beneficial supplements, homeopathy can be helpful in detoxifying for psoriasis. Another new-age method of detoxification is the hydra detox system. This machine reportedly allows its users to remove toxins through the soles of their feet.

Because stress can make psoriasis worse, you need to do what you can to reduce your stress levels. Getting plenty of sleep and doing deep-breathing exercises, yoga and meditation are all good ways to reduce stress. In addition, the American Liver Foundation recommends minimizing your exposure to items such as spray paint, insect sprays and other harmful chemicals that can be inhaled or absorbed through the skin because they pose a significant threat to the health of a liver.

What Stuff at Home Is Good for Nail Fungus?

Certain types of fungus that breed commonly in moist places like shower stalls, shower screens and locker rooms can enter your nails through damaged or injured areas. A weakened immune system, certain kinds of nail polish, cutting nails too short, wet feet, and unclean socks are among the factors that can promote a fungal infection, leading to patchy and brittle nails that may be painful and even odorous. While there are a few drugs or ointments that can help treat nail fungus, certain home remedies can be effective as well.

Bleach

You can use bleach, such as the original Clorox, to help your nail to grow back healthy after a fungus attack. As with all the home remedies, a variety of treatments have been reported. Most use bleach in diluted form, since undiluted application is potentially dangerous.

Make sure to use bleach in a well-ventilated area. One method is to soak affected feet for 10 to 15 minutes morning and night in a highly diluted solution of one tablespoon bleach to a gallon of water. Another is to use a stronger solution of one part bleach to 10 parts water applied directly to the affected nails once a day. Let it work for a few minutes. After either treatment, wash the affected area with soapy water and dry it completely.

Soaking your feet in a solution of one part bleach to 100 parts water once a week may be an effective preventive of nail fungus infection.

Vinegar

Vinegar can be an effective household agent for treating nail fungus. One recommendation is to make a mixture of 1 part apple cider vinegar and 2 parts warm water. Keep your infected nails soaked in the solution for about 20 minutes and then remove them. Rinse in water and dry carefully. You can soak your feet daily this way. If your skin becomes irritated, dilute the vinegar more, or soak your feet two or three times a week instead of every day. Remember to rinse with water and dry the affected area carefully

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is another effective natural cure for nail fungus. Again, there are several recommended ways to apply it. One way is to take equal parts of tea tree oil and Vaseline and mix well. Apply this on the infected nail and keep it in place with a band-aid. Leave it that way for a whole day if possible. This may be particularly effective as a follow-up to treatment with bleach or vinegar.

Alternatively, you can just apply tea tree oil to all your nails at least three times every day.

Preventive Precautions

Developing good habits can both prevent nail fungus and keep it suppressed if you have been infected.

After using your hands to wash anything, remember to rinse them well with soap and water. Clean your feet with soapy water every day as well. Dry your hands and feet dry properly after washing.

Wear shoes that fit right at all times, making sure they are not too tight, and wear your own clean pair of shower shoes in public showering places and locker rooms. Maintain personal hygiene by changing your hosiery items daily and airing your shoes regularly.

Clip your fingernails and toenails such that they reach just the top of your finger or toe. Apply some talcum powder in your shoes to let your feet and nails breathe, making them less attractive habitats for fungus.

Natural Relief for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the lower jaw to bones on both sides of your head. Proper flexibility of these joints will allow you to talk clearly, chew and open your mouth. TMJ pain can occur in your neck, ears, shoulders and face. The variety of natural TMJ relief methods range from rehabilitation exercises to natural professional modalities. To prevent TMJ, be aware of what activities to avoid or limit.

Exercise

Do a chin tuck. The website chiropractic-help.com recommends that you sit upright in a firm chair. Place the web between your index finger and thumb onto the front of your lower jaw. Unclench your teeth, keeping them slightly apart. Press your lower jaw gently with your hand's web. Move your chin backward, causing your upper teeth to protrude. Do not open your mouth any further. Gently push your lower jaw forward into your hand, and hold for 3 seconds. Return to the original position. Repeat this exercise 4 times.

Stress Relief

Lower your stress level. Many times, TMJ results from excessive stress and the inability to properly cope with it.

Begin meditation. Learn how to sit in a quiet place and clear your mind of any distractions---you can take a class or teach yourself. Remove all thoughts, and concentrate on your breathing. Be grateful for your breaths.

Do aerobic exercises. According to the American Heart Association, aerobic exercises such as running, walking, bicycling and even mowing the lawn can provide natural stress relief.

Natural Modalities

Find an acupuncturist---a trained health professional who provides natural pain relief by using needles that stimulate your body's energy flow and remove blockages that cause disease and conditions such as TMJ.

Begin massage therapy. A massage therapist can help ease your TMJ disorder by manually manipulating (massaging) the affected muscles and tissues causing the pain. A professionally licensed massage therapist can help with elimination of metabolic wastes. Massage therapy can also increase your oxygen intake and nutrient absorption while stimulating your blood flow, all of which can provide natural relief for TMJ, according to painreliefprofessionals.com.

Start seeing a chiropractor. Chiropractors have training in manipulating your skeletal system to help alleviate any pain or stiffness. They can also help improve functioning of associated muscles and nerves. In addition to adjusting your skeletal system, chiropractic practitioners can use rehabilitative exercises, massage and nutrition, plus ice and heat therapies.

Wear A Mouth Guard

Avoid jaw and teeth clenching. Not only painful, jaw clenching can cause damage to your joints and teeth, according to nismat.org. You can find a variety of mouth guards you can wear during your sleeping hours. Purchase your mouth guard at your local pharmacy, or visit your dentist's office for a fitting. A chiropractor may also help you in this area.

Know What to Avoid or Limit

Certain things will cause you unnecessary pain. Avoid, or severely limit, activities that cause excess strain on your TMJ. Examples of these activities include gum chewing, biting your fingernails and chewing any food that takes excessive jaw movement such as caramels, tough cuts of red meat and crunchy snack foods.

Benefits of Himalayan Salt

Benefits of Himalayan Salt

Himalayan salt is mined at the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains, deep inside the earth. It is found on the largest salt range in the entire world. These salts, which date to the Precambrian age, are completely pure and free from the polluting agents that are found in most of today's environments. Himalayan salt is mined by hand, like it has been done for thousands of years. This preserves its pureness and increases its natural health benefits.

Negative Ions

According to Denise Mann, a writer for Webmd.com, "negative ions are odorless, tasteless and invisible molecules that we inhale in abundance in certain environments. Think mountains, waterfalls and beaches." Mann writes that these negative ions produce positive biochemical reactions that can increase serotonin levels. This helps alleviate depression, relieve stress and boost energy levels.

Himalayan salt produces negative ions because it comes from an environment rich in dry iron. This kind of environment is able to kill the harmful bacteria and microbes that are found in other salts. Himalayan salt is beneficial to patients who suffer from chronic illness of the bronchial system or allergies.

Unrefined

Because Himalayan salt is not chemically refined, it is completely pure. It contains all of its original natural minerals. Replacing ordinary table salt with Himalayan salt can reduce edema in the body tissue, as well as reduce the formation of cellulite.

Minerals and Trace Elements

Himalayan salt contains at least 84 minerals and trace elements, many of which are beneficial for human consumption:

Calcium, which is important for the development and protection of bones and teeth, is found in this salt.

Chromium is also in Himalayan salt. It aids in metabolizing and regulating blood glucose.

Cobalt, which helps produce red blood cells, is also abundant in Himalayan salt.

Iron, another important mineral that is necessary for cell formation, is a key element in this particular salt.

Some of the other beneficial minerals that are found in Himalayan salt include magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, zinc, sulfur and molybdenum.

Salt Lamps

Pierce J. Howard, Ph.D., and author of "The Owner's Manual for the Brain: Everyday Applications from Mind Brain Research," states on WebMD that ionizers "may protect against germs in the air, resulting in decreased irritation due to inhaling various particles that make you sneeze, cough or have a throat irritation."

Himalayan salt lamps act as ionizers in the home. When a salt lamp heats up, it absorbs any moisture that is inside the salt. This causes the lamp to be warm on the inside and damp on the surface. This contrasts works together to build an ion field. The lamp then releases negative ions into the air.

Placement

Spring Mountain Naturals recommends that Himalayan salt lamp ionizers should be placed anywhere serenity is desired. Bedrooms, living rooms, offices and hallways are all good choices. Lamps should also be placed near electronic devices to reduce electromagnetic pollution.

Techniques for Dry Needling

Techniques for Dry Needling

Dry needling is an invasive physical therapy for chronic neuropathic pain that involves inserting a thin filament needle into the skin, cutaneous tissues and muscle at a myofascial trigger point to elicit a local twitch response (LTR.) A myofascial trigger point (MTrP) is an area of taut muscle fibers. A local twitch response is an involuntary spinal cord reflex in which the taut muscle fibers at the trigger point contract, relieving the pain.

Differentiation From Traditional Chinese Acupuncture

Dry needling is a Western mode of medicine that involves techniques, terminology and concepts different from traditional Chinese acupuncture. Dry needling uses modern understanding of physiology and anatomy such as neurological research and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to develop techniques for dry needling whereas traditional Chinese acupuncture uses ancient Chinese concepts of energy channels, meridian systems and pulse assessment to develop needling techniques. Dry needling is also known as biomedical acupuncture, intra-muscular stimulation (IMS) and trigger point needling. Dry needling is a treatment for a variety of conditions such as muscular hematoma, rotator cuff injuries, muscle tears, shin splints, compartment syndrome, Achilles tendonopathies, patellar femoral syndrome, groin strain, patellar tendonitis, impingement syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome, medial and lateral epicondytis, carpal tunnel syndrome, hip osteoarthritis, cervical disc lesions, headaches and pelvic pain among others.

Myofascial Trigger Point Technique

The myofascial trigger point technique involves the slow insertion of a filament needle with a teflon coating into the area of injury. Dry needling the taut band of muscles elicits the LTR which causes muscle contraction. The needles pressure on the myofascial trigger point results in immediate pain which alleviates as the needle remains in the myofascial trigger point. Dry needling is a painful process and the area of the myofascial trigger point may remain sore for up to two days after the procedure although needling alleviates most of the original pain.

Radiculopathy Technique

The term "radiculopathy" refers to pain at the root of a nerve along the spinal cord. Radiculopathy treatment involves inserting the filament needle into areas near the musculotendinous junctions or muscle motor points of the myofascial trigger point. Radiculopathy focuses on the paraspinal muscles and peripheral muscles to open the blockage of nerve impulses.

Spinal Segmental Sensitization Technique

Spinal segmental sensitization involves dry needling the myofascial trigger points that cause musculoskeletal pain. In addition to dry needling, the spinal segmental sensitization technique involves preinjection blocks and somatic blocks as well as exercises that relax the area surrounding the myofascial trigger point.

Homemade Tips for Skin Whitening

Skin whitening is a way to reduce or eliminate scars, age spots, port wine stains, freckles and other skin discolorations. In reality, the skin is not whitened. Skin-whitening products bleach the hyper-pigmented areas of skin to achieve a more even complexion. Skin-whitening products go by other names, such as fade creams, bleaching creams or skin lighteners. But they all perform essentially the same function. The main difference is the ingredients. Some are natural and others are manufactured chemicals. The safest and least expensive products are made from natural ingredients.

Use Lemon Juice

Lemon juice has been a folk remedy for treating age spots and freckles for a long time. This homemade skin whitener is safe and natural. The citric acid in lemons act as a mild acid that exfoliates or removes the epidermis or top skin layer. By removing the dead skin cells, excess oil and dirt, the lemon juice can better penetrate the skin and fade the discolored areas. The skin renews itself faster after the surface of the epidermis is removed. When the new skin reaches the surface, it is less discolored. Squeeze a fresh lemon or buy a bottle of the juice. Apply the lemon juice to the hyper-pigmented areas with a cotton ball. You can apply lemon juice a few times a day. Results will be seen within a few weeks.

Use Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a popular bleaching substance. Many hair coloring kits and teeth-whitening products have hydrogen peroxide as one of the main ingredients. Hydrogen peroxide has many uses (such as a disinfectant) so many homes already have a bottle of peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide sold in drug stores is in a dark-colored bottle because sunlight and artificial light lessens its potency. Use a cotton ball to apply a small amount of the peroxide to the areas you want to lighten in color. As with lemon juice, you can apply hydrogen peroxide a few times a day.

Use Buttermilk

Buttermilk is also recommended to fade discolored areas and lighten skin. The lactic acid in buttermilk works in a way similar to citric acid. The lactic acid exfoliates the epidermis and helps to fade the age spots or scars. Buttermilk can be applied to the skin and used as a facial. Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse off with warm mater. You can have a buttermilk facial a few times a week.

The Best Home Remedies for Menopausal Symptoms

Menopause--the time in a woman's life when she is no longer able to reproduce--brings with it a variety of side effects and symptoms, most often caused by a decrease in the amount and quality of hormones found in the body. At this time, hormone levels fluctuate and cause a variety of reactions that include but are not limited to hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, headaches and heart palpitations. Home remedies to treat such symptoms offer many women effective and welcome relief.

Hot Flashes

Hot flashes are a common and annoying symptom of decreased hormone levels in women experiencing menopause. Hot flashes are usually followed by sweat. Sometimes, women feel cold or chilled despite warm temperatures. Many women benefit from taking vitamin E, starting at about 400 IU (international units) twice a day. However, before self-medicating with herbs or vitamin supplements, check with your doctor to make sure such herbs or vitamins won't interact with any medications you may currently be taking.

Other women find relief from hot flashes by drinking teas that contain black cohosh, sarsparilla or Dong Quoi. These herbs are commonly found in pre-formed tea bags in your natural health food store and can be brewed with about 8 ounces of hot water for effective relief.

Insomnia

Many women going through menopause experience some difficulty sleeping, which when it goes on long enough, can lead to sleep deprivation, irritability, inability to concentrate and mood swings. Jasmine tea provides effective relief from insomnia and promotes relaxation and calm. Jasmine contains serotonin that helps enhance neurotransmitters in the brain that encourage sleep. Serotonin also can be found in foods like bananas, chicken and turkey.

Evening primrose is another time-tested remedy for insomnia and may be purchased in capsule form. You may take between two and eight capsules a day, depending on the severity of your symptoms.

Night Sweats

Night sweats often occur during sleep, causing intense sweating and heat. Night sweats usually follow hot flashes, but are actually a hot flash that occurs during sleep, prompting women to throw covers off or become soaked, requiring a change of nightclothes. One common remedy for night sweats is to take between 10 to 15 drops of motherwort with a few sips of water at night when awakened. Chaste berry also has long been used to decrease the frequency and severity of hot flashes and night sweats when used for a minimum of two to three months, with more permanent effectiveness achieved after about a year of consistent use.

How to Use Coconut Oil to Clear Up an Ear Infection

How to Use Coconut Oil to Clear Up an Ear Infection

The most common condition for which children take antibiotics is the ear infection, according to Coconut Oil Central. Many parents, however, prefer to give more natural remedies to their children. Adults also like to try natural remedies whenever they can. Coconut oil is one natural treatment that people use to clear up ear infections.

Symptoms

According to Natural Cures and Remedies, otitis media is the medical term for an ear infection. Otitis means inflammation, and media means middle (referring to the middle ear, where ear infections usually occur). Ear pain is a key symptom of ear infection, as is fever. Other symptoms include irritability, fluid draining from the ear and difficulty sleeping.

Benefits

One of the main reasons why many people prefer to use coconut oil as opposed to other treatments is safety. Using coconut oil in the ear has relatively few side-effects or risks, whereas other approaches, such as medications, involve numerous side-effects. In addition, many are concerned about the overuse of antibiotics. "Coconut oil kills a long list of bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites and protozoa," according to Coconut Oil Central, because it contains high levels of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs).

Procedure

Using coconut oil for an ear infection is relatively easy. If possible, it is best that someone other than the person with the ear infection administer the coconut oil drops, because it can be difficult to place the drops correctly into one's own ears. Coconut oil is solid, so melt it slightly until it becomes liquid. Place the oil into an eye dropper. Have the person with the infected ear lie down, and carefully place several drops of the liquid oil into the affected ear. The person with the infected ear should continue reclining for several minutes to allow the oil to absorb into the ear. To prevent the oil from coming out of the ear, place a small piece of a cotton ball into the outer part of the ear.

Types

There are various brands of coconut oil for sale, and these are available in health food stores, other grocery stores and from online retailers, such as those that sell nutritional supplements. It is important to use a quality oil for use in the ear and preferably an organic one that is as pure as possible.

Considerations

One can also eat coconut oil to get additional healing benefits for ear infections. According to Natural Cures and Remedies, eating good fats like coconut oil can help to boost the immune system. Placing a heating pad or warm towel over the ear is another soothing natural treatment for ear infections.

Warning

Do not place coconut oil into the ear if the eardrum is possibly injured. In that case, seek help from a health practitioner.

Natural Cures for Peyronie's Disease

Peyronie's disease, sometimes a consequence of diabetes mellitus or trauma, is a painful disorder caused by the accumulation of plaque on the upper and lower sides of the penis in the erectile tissue. The tissue first becomes inflamed, and later scarred. This plaque and scarring reduces the flexibility of the organ and makes sexual intercourse painful. Sometimes the plaque and scarring are so severe that they cause the penis to bend in an arc during an erection. Plaque that accumulates on the top of the shaft, the most common form, can result in the penis bending upwards, while plaque occurring on the underside causes the penis to bend downwards. Of the men who suffer from this disease, 30 percent also have some other form of fibrosis or hardened cells, such as Dupuytren's contracture of the hand. While there is currently no cure for the disease, some medicines help with pain, and surgery can be beneficial in some cases. Of course, there are those who seek natural cures for the disease. While some may claim that they get relief from special herbs or foods, there has be no accepted documentation proving any natural cures for Peyronie's disease.

There have been a few studies in which researchers have studied the effects of vitamins on men afflicted with Peyronie's. Vitamin E has been tested as a treatment in small studies, and researchers have reported that some patients did receive some relief. Unfortunately, there have been no controlled studies of the effects of vitamin E on Peyronie's disease.
Para-aminobenzoate, a substance akin to vitamin B-complex vitamins, has also been studied as a treatment for Peyronie's, but results were inconclusive. Vitamin C has also been researched, but has not proven to be effective, and athough some men believe that vitamins E and C as well as the B vitamins help reduce symptoms, none has been proven to be effective.

Antioxidants

Acetyl-L-carnitine, a powerful antioxidant, has been shown to be of some help in relieving symptoms, but again, there is no scientific proof that this is truly effective. Those who wish to try this method should use less than 300 mg since higher doses can cause insomnia.

Potassium Para-Aminobenzoate (POTABA)

Researchers conducted studies of trials using potassium para-aminobenzoate. Results showed that although it did not cure the disease, it appeared to prevent further penile curvature.

Peyronie's Treatment Pills

There are several marketed "cures" for Peyronie's, but non to date contain any fibrin-dissolving substances, and therefore cannot cure the disease.

Massage

While some promoters attempt to market their vitamin-enriched creams and oils meant to be massaged into the skin of the penis to "cure" Peyronie's disease, none has proven to be effective.

Medicinal Uses of Sea Salt

Medicinal Uses of Sea Salt

According to the Mayo Clinic, the chemical makeup of sea salt is the same as table salt, with differences existing in taste, texture and processing. Nevertheless, medicinal uses for salt--which are mainly topical applications--generally call for less processed sea salt. Many of these are traditional remedies, and their effects will vary. For serious health conditions, talk with your doctor about the effect of sea salt remedies.

Oral Health

Sea salt can be used for gargling and to clean the mouth and teeth. To make a gargling solution, mix 1/2 tsp. of sea salt into a glass of warm water. This can help with a sore throat. You can make a toothpaste with one part sea salt and two parts baking soda that helps whiten teeth. Mix equal parts sea salt and baking soda to make a mouthwash.

Eye Treatments

A diluted solution of 1/2 tsp. of sea salt to a pint of water can be used to wash and relieve tired eyes. Use the same solution with hot water to dab around eyes to reduce puffiness.

Skin Irritation

Sea salt can be applied to some bug bites and rashes for relief. For bee stings, wet the area and apply salt for pain relief. For mosquito, chigger and other bug bites, soak the bite area in salty water, then apply a mixture of salt and lard to the bite. You can speed recovery from poison ivy by soaking the affected area in hot, salty water.

Soaking and Stress Relief

Bathing in salt solutions is known to have a relaxing effect that soothes aching muscles. Add a handful of sea salt to a hot bath to relieve fatigue, or several tablespoons to hot water in a basin to sooth tired feet. You can also exfoliate skin by using salt as a rub after bathing.

How Does Vinegar Help Toenail Fungus?

Why Vinegar Helps

Technically, vinegar doesn't help the toenail fungus--it kills it. The reason it works to kill it, though, is that the fungus that you have on your toe has changed the pH value of your skin. It's more alkaline than it was before. The vinegar acts as an acid and relieves the itching and pain, then stops the fungus from growing and spreading. Eventually, through repeated use, it will kill the fungus that was living there as the "host" (your toes) are no longer hospitable.

Types of Vinegar

You can use several different types of vinegar to help solve your toe fungus problem. Depending on your personal preferences, you could use white, apple cider, malt, wine, raisin, coconut, beer, honey or rice vinegar. The type doesn't matter as much as the vinegar itself. Many people prefer apple cider vinegar as the scent is more pleasing than some alternatives, and it can be used for other vinegar-based cures.

How to Use Vinegar

There are two ways you can use the vinegar. If you've chosen apple cider vinegar, you can drink it. Two tablespoons in the morning and another two at night. If you prefer not to drink it--or if you just want to use plain white vinegar--soak your toes in a solution of 50 percent vinegar and 50 percent water for about 30 minutes every day until the fungus is completely gone. If you've chosen to soak your toes, make sure to dry them off immediately after removing them from the bath--moisture helps fungus grow. There should be no side effects.

Uses for Black Seed Oil

Uses for Black Seed Oil

Black seed can be used as a homeopathic remedy for ailments and to improve overall health. The flowering herb goes by the scientific name Nigella sativa and is grown in Europe, Arabia and India. The rectangular seeds are the portion of the plant used to make black seed products. The seed has been used to treat maladies related to respiratory health, aid kidney function and improve circulation. Black seed is also used in cooking and may have anti-cancer properties. Other names for the seed are black cumin, fennel flower, onion seed and Roman coriander.

Composition

According to the Muslim Health Network, black seed contains 15 amino acids, carbohydrates, alkaloids and dietary fiber, and linolenic and oleic acids in addition to minerals like sodium, potassium and calcium. Research indicates that black seed can help boost your immune system, act as an anti-inflammatory agent and serve as an antibiotic.

Bronchial Cure

Take 1 tsp. of black seed oil in coffee twice daily. You can also inhale the oil by mixing it with hot water or simply rub it onto your chest to help with asthma or other bronchial illness. Take three drops of black seed oil in each of your nostrils to aid sinus congestion.

Hypertension

A King Saud University clinical study notes that black seed oil decreases blood pressure. To treat hypertension, add 1 tsp. of black seed oil to any drink and also take two cloves of garlic with breakfast. Apply the oil to your body and expose yourself to the sun for 30 minutes every three days. Follow this procedure for a month.

Toxicity

According to an article on the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center website, black seed is shown to have a low level of toxicity but does possess antioxidant effects due to its chief ingredient thymoquinine, meaning it could possibly interfere with radiation therapy or chemotherapy treatments in cancer patients. The seed extract does not appear to interfere with liver or kidney function.

About Herbal Relief for Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is marked by widespread pain all over the body, exhaustion and a set of nine tender points where the muscle is especially sensitive to touch. These points are located in the back, buttocks, elbows, knees, neck and thighs. According to the Mayo Clinic, fibromyalgia affects about 2 percent of the population and women are much more likely than men to suffer from this condition. Despite numerous studies, the medical community cannot pinpoint a definite cause or cure for fibromyalgia. There are herbal and other natural treatments that can help alleviate symptoms.

Herbal Treatments

Consult a physician before starting herbal treatments, especially if you are taking standard medications already.
Boswellia is good for stiffness and pain experienced after waking in the morning. Take as directed on the label. There are many anecdotal reports that cat's claw improves symptoms after three months of continuous use; take 3,000 mg daily. Kava induces sleep; take 120 mg daily. St. John's Wort can ease depression by raising serotonin levels. It also restores normal sleeping patterns and alleviates pain. Take 900 mg daily for two to three months. Willowbark offers aspirin-like pain relief without the risk of bleeding or upset stomach. Take tablets as directed on the label.

Caution about Herbal Treatments

Do not use cat's claw if you are taking insulin for diabetes or are pregnant or nursing. Kava increases the effects of alcohol and other sedatives. St. John's Wort can interact negatively with and decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, warfarin (a popular blood-thinning medication) and anticonvulsants.

Other Supplements

Take 800 mg of S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) daily for six weeks to alleviate symptoms. Five separate studies have shown that this substance relieves depression, fatigue, morning stiffness, muscular weakness and pain caused by fibromyalgia. These studies were conducted by: P. Di Benedetto, published in 1993 in Current Therapeutic Research; S. Jacobsen, published in 1991 by the Scandanavian Journal of Rheumatology; A. Tavoni, published in November 1987 by Clinical Experience in Rheumatology; A. Tavoni, published in the February 1998 edition of American Journal of Medicine; and H. Volkmann, published in 1997 in the Journal of Rheumatology.
Enhance any antidepressant therapies with 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan (5-HTP) and magnesium. 5-HTP increases the effects of both St. John's Wort and pharmaceutical antidepressants. Take 100 mg three times daily every other day for three months. Magnesium stimulates serotonin production and helps prevent muscle burn. Take 250 mg three times daily.

Diet

Try eating pomegranates: A 2001 study by Drs. R. P. Singh, K. N. Chidambara Murthy, and G. K. Jayaprakasha at the Central Food Technological Research Institute in India found that pomegranates and pomegranate juice contain powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties; these may help alleviate symptoms.
Drink a lot of liquids to help flush out toxins. Distilled water, herbal teas and fresh vegetable juices are best. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and sugar. They all increase the body's production of lactic acid, which can contribute to the feeling of muscle burn.

Other Suggestions

A study conducted by the Mayo Clinic in June of 2006 consisting of 50 fibromyalgia patients had 25 receive acupuncture with the other 25 serving as a control. The patients receiving acupuncture reported significant improvement in their condition, namely lessened fatigue and anxiety.
Make a serious effort to exercise daily, even if it is just starting at a few minutes a day. Try to work up to 20 to 30 minutes daily. The primary benefit for this condtion is the positive effect on sleep.

How to Make an Easy Elderberry Tincture

How to Make an Easy Elderberry Tincture

Elderberry is an extremely beneficial plant. The berries have been used in folk remedies for hundreds of years on various medical ailments and diseases. An elderberry tincture is often used to treat symptoms of the flu or common cold. Historically, making a tincture involved a long process, including picking and drying the elderberry flowers. Thankfully, today you can make an elderberry tincture in just minutes using dried elderberry in tea bags and no alcohol, which makes it perfectly safe for children.

Instructions

    1

Heat water in a teapot or regular pot on the stove, until rapidly boiling. Remove pot from the heat source.

    2

Place tea bags into a large mug or jar. Pour boiling water over the tea bags.

    3

Allow to steep for 3 to 5 minutes.

    4

Remove tea bags and squeeze the remaining liquid from the bags into the mug.

    5

Add honey for sweetness, although it is optional.

Making a Ragweed Tincture

A tincture is a liquid extract that is made using herbs soaked in a solution of alcohol, vegetable glycerine or apple cider vinegar. For those who experience the severity of ragweed allergies, it might be hard to imagine ragweed as being helpful to human health. However, ragweed actually has numerous health benefits --- it helps regulate the liver, stimulates gastric flow and can cleanse the appendix. Because you can't just eat the plant to extract these qualities, ragweed is soaked in alcohol as a means of extraction. When consumed, ragweed tincture can actually improve your resistance to ragweed allergies and lessen your symptoms.

Instructions

    1

Trim several of the flowering tops off the ragweed plant and pack the tops tightly into a small glass jar.

    2

Fill the jar with the ragweed with 100 proof vodka and seal the container.

    3

Label the jar with the date and name of the tincture for future reference, using the scotch tape and marker. This will let you know how long has passed since the tincture was made.

    4

Store the jar with the ragweed and vodka in a cool, dark place for six weeks.

L-Tyrosine for Night Sweats in Menopause

L-Tyrosine for Night Sweats in Menopause

Women going through menopause experience many symptoms that can be uncomfortable and interfere with normal functioning at work and at home. Night sweats is a common symptom, and for some women this means they cannot get a good night's sleep. L-Tyrosine is one of the alternative remedies used to reduce night sweats and other symptoms.

What is LT

L- Tyrosine (LT) is an amino acid which aids in synthesizing several neurotransmitters and chemicals in your brain. It has an important role in synthesizing three key neurotransmitters, called dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine. All of these are involved in regulating your appetite and your moods and can help reduce your body's reaction to stress. As hormonal levels change during menopause, which affects the above neurotransmitters, LT can help to reduce night sweats as well as other uncomfortable symptoms.

LT for Menopause

LT has been used widely by women undergoing menopause to reduce night sweats as well as symptoms like depression, fatigue, appetite loss and headaches. When night sweats occur during perimenopause or after menopause is completed, LT can still be very helpful for night sweats which may continue or recur. The actual functioning of LT is complex. It appears to support the appropriate balance of neurotransmitters. High serotonin levels affect the sense of relaxation and high dopamine levels tend to support mental alertness.

What are Night Sweats

Night sweats range widely from mild to quite severe and result from all the hormonal changes going on during menopause. They are similar to the hot flashes which can happen at any time. Some women wake in the middle of the night feeling like their body is on fire. Often you can drift back to sleep and then wake again finding your sheets soaking wet. If this happens several times, it is difficult to get the rest you need. Sleep deprivation often contributes to other symptoms like fatigue, depression, aches and pains.

Tests and Diagnosis

Your doctor can test for some of the hormone changes going on during menopause so that you can work out a course of treatment. Saliva testing is used in determining whether there are excesses or deficiencies in the six major sex hormones; estrogens (E1, E2, and E3), testosterone, progesterone and dihydroepiandosterone. Doctors can also test the functioning of the thyroid, pituitary and hypothalamus glands. All of the above often contribute to hot flashes and night sweats.

Side Effects and Interactions

LT is safe for most people, taken over several months. For longer use, it is worth consulting with a nutritionist or naturopathic doctor. Some people do experience side effects like headache, fatigue, heartburn, nausea and joint pain. For people with thyroid disorders LT is not a good idea since it may not mix well with thyroid medications. For women who do not want to use hormone treatment known as HRT to reduce night sweats. LT is a safe alternative substance for night sweats and other related symptoms.

Organic Colon Cleanse & Detox

Colon cleansing is a popular natural alternative remedy to detoxify the intestines. The colon is part of the intestinal tract, where harmful toxins and waste accumulate. By getting rid of these toxins, you boost your immune system and increase your energy. Toxins are known to sometimes cause disease and illness and make you feel lethargic. Use these following organic remedies to naturally cleanse the colon.

High-Fiber Fruit

By adding fruit to your diet you naturally cleanse the colon. By eating apples on a daily basis, the pectin draws out toxins from the intestinal lining and the fiber eliminates waste efficiently. You can also combine apples, strawberries and blueberries together. Strawberries and blueberries are also high in fiber. Puree the fruit in a blender to make a powerful colon-cleansing smoothie.

Psyllium

Another organic colon cleanse option is psyllium. Psyllium is a popular organic colon cleanser and can be found at natural health food stores. Take it as a dietary supplement capsule or in powder form. Another option is to grind psyllium seeds with water and drink the mixture. Psyllium contains a fiber called mucilage. Mucilage aids in the digestive process by triggering colon contractions. When you take psyllium, your stools are heavier and bulkier (as a result of impacted waste from intestinal walls).

Herbs

By taking natural herb supplements, you detoxify and cleanse your colon. The following herbs can be found in supplement formula at natural health food stores or herb stores: dandelion, fennel seed and licorice root. When you take these herbs, you not only cleanse your colon but you also cleanse essential organs such as the liver and kidneys. It's important to maintain healthy liver and kidney function and to eliminate waste from these organs. Sometimes waste and toxins from the organs seep into the colon. Fennel seed has a powerful cleansing effect on the colon; children aren't advised to take this herb for colon cleansing.

Vegetables

By adding vegetables to your diet you add more fiber, which aids in cleansing the colon. Buy organic vegetables because they don't contain toxic chemical residue (compared to store-bought produce). Vegetables are packed with fiber; choose high-fiber vegetables such as asparagus, broccoli and peas. Fiber naturally flushes out toxins from the intestines and moves accumulated waste out of the colon.

How to Apply Castor Oil

How to Apply Castor Oil

Some doctors prescribe castor oil to treat skin wounds or ulcers as well as to speed healing, according to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences' website. For this purpose, a doctor would prescribe a castor oil spray or gel. You can also use heated castor oil "packs" to treat conditions such as carpel tunnel syndrome or muscle inflammation or soreness. Historically, some cultures used castor oil to induce or speed up labor, although according to the Creighton University Medical Center, this practice's "safety is questionable." Properly apply castor oil to get the best results from your treatment.

Instructions

Using Castor Oil Medicine to Treat a Wound or Speed Healing

    1

Wash your hands with soap and water and dry them thoroughly. Treat a wound with castor oil only under a doctor's care. Your physician will prescribe the oil in gel or spray form, which you will apply to your skin.

    2

If you are using a prescribed castor oil spray, prime the pump by pumping it repeatedly while holding it upright. Shake your bottle, hold it about a foot away from your skin, and pump to spray onto skin.

    3

If you have a gel form of castor oil, open the tube. Apply a small, thin layer to your fingers, and then rub your fingers gently against the affected area. Wash your hands again when finished with the application..

    4

Cover the area only if directed to by your doctor. Repeat the process as often as directed by your doctor.

Castor Oil Packs to Treat Muscle Soreness or Carpel Tunnel

    5

Create a castor oil "pack" to treat sore muscles or to ease your carpel tunnel syndrome. For this purpose, you don't need a prescription. You can use the castor oil you'd find in your local supermarket. Dampen flannel cloth with castor oil, but don't saturate it to the point that it is dripping.

    6

Cover your wrist or other affected area with the cloth, and then cover the cloth with a clean, dry plastic bag.

    7

Apply a heating pad over the plastic for an hour. A University of Maryland Medical Center article recommends continuing this treatment at least twice daily and four nights a week until you see relief.

MSM Multi Vitamin for Skin & Nails

MSM Multi Vitamin for Skin & Nails

Methylsulfonylmethane is a supplemental form of sulfur also known as MSM. It is present in all living cells and allows fluids to move through cell membranes and toxins to exit. MSM is beneficial to the skin, hair and nails because it helps to synthesize their main component of keratin.

MSM for Softer Skin

MSM helps maintain collagen and keeps the skin soft and healthy. It binds to toxins inside cells and helps cells to eliminate them, thus improving skin health and enhancing the pliability and softness of the skin. Without the sulfur that MSM supplies, the skin can become rough and dry and even crack.

MSM Improves Wrinkes

As we age, the collagen breaks down in the skin, causing a rough or wrinkled appearance. MSM helps to renew skin and smooth wrinkles.

MSM Helps Reduce Scars

MSM helps maintain collagen that regenerates the skin. This improves the appearance of scars. It even helps to prevent blisters from sunburn damage.

MSM Helps Nails to Grow Faster and Stronger

MSM enhances keratin, the major component that is responsible for strengthening hair, skin and nails. It increases the growth rate of nails and helps them to resist breaking and chipping.

Essential to the Whole Body

The sulfur of MSM is one of the most important minerals for the health of the whole body. It is essential to all cells and organs and tendons, and to the hair, the skin, and the nails.

Holistic Therapy for the Knee Injury

Holistic Therapy for the Knee Injury

If you experience chronic knee pain, you are not alone. Many people experience knee pain and injuries after years of walking, repetitive use and athletic participation. There are a lot of treatments out there, but some can be costly, invasive and not very effective. Holistic and alternative therapies are becoming more popular because of their low cost and reported effectiveness. Before resorting to surgery, explore these alternative knee therapies.

Build Leg Strength

The knee is a fragile joint that relies on a support system of ligaments and muscles of the leg, namely the quadriceps and hamstring muscles. If the supporting muscles of the knee are weak, this will cause more stress on the knee joint during activity resulting in unnecessary wear and tear, cartilage deterioration and knee pain. You can prevent knee pain and even reverse knee pain by gently strengthening the quadriceps and hamstring muscles over a period of time. A physical therapist can recommend exercises for your specific knee injury. Any independent strengthening you do will ultimately be helpful to your knees as well, as long as it is done in a safe way without a lot of undue impact or force.

Yoga and Stretching

Although there are some yoga postures that can potentially damage the knees if performed in the wrong way or by inexperienced practitioners, yoga and stretching, done correctly, can be very helpful in rehabilitating worn knees. Yoga positions can help regenerate healthy muscle tissue around the knees. In certain postures, blood flow to the knees is restricted, signaling the body to send even more blood flow to the area. When you release the posture, fresh blood comes rushing to the site of constriction, which aids in healthy tissue regeneration. For example, even kneeling with the hips back on the heels can be a beneficial posture for rebuilding the knees and easing knee pain. It should be noted that care should always be taken with the knees, as they are an especially delicate joint and can be easily injured. Consult an experienced yoga teacher for specific postures that you can do to help your knee pain or injury.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical treatment that uses tiny needles inserted into the skin at particular points on the body to heal and relieve pain. Acupuncture has proven to be very helpful in controlling chronic pain and swelling in the knee, and it is particularly helpful for easing knee pain caused by osteoarthritis. A recent study conducted at the University of Maryland showed that study participants treated with acupuncture reported 40 percent less knee pain than study participants treated with other methods. Acupuncture is safe and has few to no side effects if performed properly. Consult your physician to get a referral to a reputable acupuncturist in your area.

About Flaxseed and Cholesterol

About Flaxseed and Cholesterol

Flaxseeds provide numerous health benefits. Flaxseed is versatile and easily added to muffin mixes, breads, sprinkled on cereal or added to smoothies. Research into the health benefits of flax suggests a link between the seed's lignan compounds and lower blood cholesterol levels.

Features of Flax

About the size of a sesame seed, the small brown flaxseed packs a wallop. Despite its small size, flaxseeds are chock full of nutrients and provide a rich source of complete protein. In addition to containing phytochemicals with antioxidant, anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties, flax contains a high percentage of omega-3 polyunsaturated fats.

Cholesterol and Flaxseed

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that one in every six Americans have high blood cholesterol levels. According to the CDC, a buildup of waxy, fat-like cholesterol leads to heart disease and stroke. Regular flaxseed consumption may help lower total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of blood clots. This is due to lignan, flaxseed's cholesterol-lowering compound.

Benefits of Flaxseed

According to the University of Michigan, preliminary studies suggest flaxseed helps people trying to lower their cholesterol. They also report reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing substantial benefits of flaxseed consumption from those suffering with constipation and systemic lupus erythematosus.

Research

Flaxseed's ability to reduce cholesterol levels is the subject of much research. In 2007, the Pennington Biomedical Research Center reviewed nine clinical trials examining flaxseed's effectiveness in lowering cholesterol. Their review led them to suggest that 15 to 50 grams of whole or powdered flaxseed daily modestly reduces total and LDL cholesterol by 1.6 to 18 percent. Whole flaxseed and flaxseed powder appears more effective at reducing cholesterol than flaxseed oil. Researchers at Iowa State University's Nutrition and Wellness Center report daily consumption of 3 tbsp. of flaxseed reduced cholesterol in men by just under 10 percent over three months. Iowa State University professor Suzanne Hendrich said although it lowers cholesterol less effectively than standard drugs, it lowers levels enough to make it an option for men unable to take pharmaceuticals.

Consumption

Flaxseed can be purchased at local health food stores or even many corner grocery stores. Whole flax seeds are best used in muffin or bread mixes or sprinkled on yogurt, salads, cereal or other foods. While ground flaxseed meal provides cholesterol-lowering lignans, the seed meal oxidizes if left unconsumed for too long. Oxidation alters food flavor and diminishes the product's healthy omega-3 fatty acids, considered an important factor in heart attack prevention. Chew whole seeds thoroughly, and consider using a coffee grinder to grind your own seeds. Otherwise, purchase ground flaxseed and keep it refrigerated.

How to Cure Mrsa Naturally

MRSA infection is a bacterial staphylococcus infection. In recent years much has been written about MRSA, which is a deepening concern among doctors because of the way that it spreads quickly in hospital settings, nursing homes, dialysis centers and other places where there are people with weakened immune systems. It is a strain of staph infection that is resistant to the antibiotics which commonly treats such bacterial infections. MRSA can be fatal. Even the alternative penicillin which hospitals use to treat MRSA is less effective than it used to be. Some people and even some doctors have turned to natural cures to treat MRSA and successes have been reported.

Instructions

Curing MRSA Naturally

    1

Find a medical doctor who is open to using natural cures to treat MRSA. MRSA can be fatal so it is best to use all treatments available to treat MRSA. However, when a case of MRSA seems resistant to the alternative antibiotics used to treat it (vancomycin), it is important to work with a doctor who is open to combining the continued use of the alternative antibiotics with natural treatments.

    2

Make an old-fashioned poultice to put on a MRSA-caused boil or skin eruption, either after a doctor lances the eruption or beforehand. Lay the compresses on it, changing them frequently. Some suggested ingredients that MRSA-sufferers have had success with are: oatmeal and baking soda; hydrogen peroxide and witch hazel; hot compresses and Manuka honey.

    3

Use essential oils to treat MRSA skin infections. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that applying essential oils to skin infections caused by the MRSA bacteria can be helpful in curing MRSA. Tea tree oil has been shown by research to be especially effective in treating MRSA-caused skin eruptions and infections.

    4

Diet is important in fighting MRSA. Tumeric is believed to be especially effective in destroying the MRSA bacteria. Some people believe that meat and fish contain HEME iron which causes MRSA bacteria to erupt. They report that MRSA is cured when they remove these foods from their diet. Likewise, white sugar is believed by many people to "feed" the MRSA bacteria and eliminate it from their diet with excellent results.

    5

Drink Kefir. Kefir is a cultured drink made from cow's, goat's or sheep's milk. Many MRSA patients report significant improvements in their condition when they start drinking it.

    6

Make sure that there is plenty of magnesium in the diet. Magnesium is believed to be effective in fighting the MRSA bacteria. Good sources of magnesium are pumpkin and squash seed kernels, spinach, brazil nuts, bran cereal, halibut, quinoa, almonds and soybeans.

    7

Be especially careful with hygiene. MRSA bacteria cannot pass when clothes are well laundered, dishes are well cleaned and hands are well washed.

Chemical-Free Head Lice Treatments

The World Health Organization states that head lice is prevalent around the world. Head lice occurs more frequently in females, most often in children under the age of 12. According to the Departments of Dermatology, Bristol University, Bristol, UK., common head lice are becoming resistant to the currently used pesticide treatments such as permethrin and malathion. Chemical-free head lice treatments usually involve manual removal of the lice and nits, and this process does not increase pesticide resistance.

Lice Combs

Lice and nits can be manually removed by a process called "Bug Busting." Shampoo hair and use conditioner so it is easier to get the fine-tooth comb through the hair. Allow some of the conditioner to remain in the hair. Use a wide tooth comb to straighten and de-tangle hair prior to using the lice comb. Thoroughly comb hair from roots to ends with the lice comb to remove lice and nits. Lice combs can be purchased on-line and in most drug stores.

Smothering

Olive oil can be used to smother the developing and adult lice. Wash hair. Put olive oil all over the scalp and hair. Wrap with a shower or swimming cap. Wrap another towel around to prevent mess. Leave on overnight. Use a nit comb and comb out the hair in the morning. Rub shampoo into the hair and then wash out. Repeat washing. Apply conditioner and re-comb with the nit comb to remove nits and any remaining lice.

Significance

Increased resistance to commonly used pesticides is a matter of concern. Infestations of head lice are more difficult to control with conventionally used chemical pesticides. As resistance to pesticides increases, lice infestations may last longer and become more prevalent. In addition, the pesticides used are absorbed through the skin and can cause health problems, especially for recurrent infestations.

Considerations

Lice have a 10-day life cycle. Use any control strategy every other day to break the life cycle for more effective control of the infestation. Chemical-free head lice treatments, such as combing and smothering, require more maintenance than chemical interventions with pesticides. A thorough cleaning of the environment is a necessity to control the infestation in the environment.

Prevention/Solution

Wash all bedding, towels and anything possible to kill lice in the environment. Stuffed animals and other items that cannot be washed or put in the dryer should be bagged for two weeks. Keep children's hair pinned up or cut short for school. Remind children not to share brushes, combs, hats or other articles that may have lice from another child.

What Are Homeopathic HGH Sprays Made From?

The fountain of youth is something that has been spoken of in novels and in the news for years. Today, many people look to homeopathic HGH to be an antidote to reverse aging, although research is ongoing to determine if this is entirely true.

HGH Fact

According to Colorado State University's website, your body's natural HGH is a complex hormone composed of about 190 amino acids. HGH is often used as you get older for cellular and tissue regeneration and fighting disease and infections within the immune system.

Homeopathic HGH

Homeopathic HGH is utilized to relieve the stress of the aging process by stimulating the pituitary gland. Colorado State's website says, "The role of growth hormone in normal aging remains poorly understood, but some of the cosmetic symptoms of aging appear to be amenable to growth hormone therapy." The report says more research is needed.

Homeopathic HGH Spray

Obtaining the human growth hormone via a spray is simple and fast. The spray was designed to dissolve into your bloodstream fairly quickly.

Simple Use

To use the homeopathic human growth hormone spray, spray two times under your tongue three times a day. Most bottles supply enough formula to last for 30 to 45 days.

Homeopathic HGH Spray Ingredients & Dosages

The active ingredients in homeopathic HGH sprays are usually human growth hormone 30X, pituitarum 30X, liver extract 3X. Stronger formulas have human growth hormone 30X, deer antler 6X, pituitarum 30X, liver extract 3X, arnica montana 3X and galium aparine 4X. The inactive ingredients are purified water USP and 20 percent alcohol.

Homeopathic HGH Side Effects

Men's pectoral muscles may enlarge to look more like female breasts, inflammation may occur in the joints and muscles may suffer from abnormal pain.

How to Stop Coughing Without Cough Syrup

Coughs are tricky to get rid of when you are unwell. There are many over-the-counter options, but the best are often from Mother Nature. Few people are able to subdue a cough without cough syrup, but it is possible and healthier with alternatives. You can find alternatives to cough syrup in your own home.

Instructions

    1

Rub a menthol chest rub onto the skin of the chest and throat. The vapors will break up your nasal congestion and relieve bronchial irritation. This is the desired effect, as bronchial irritation causes coughing.

    2

Turn on a humidifier. It will release moisture into the air and ease the cough. Turning one on in the winter may be a good preventative measure as well. This method in conjunction with the chest rub yields rapid results.

    3

Force yourself to make a few smaller, gentler coughs followed by a large one. The smaller coughs will help you to dispel cough-inducing mucus.

    4

Take a bite of pure dark chocolate. Dark chocolate contains Theobromine, a chemical that serves as a cough suppressant. Theobromine outperformed codeine by 33% in tests. Adults only need two ounces of dark chocolate every few hours; children need less than half that amount.

    5

Suck on a lemon and honey lozenge. The lemon will cut phlegm, and honey will soothe the throat. Coughing will decrease after 3 days of this treatment along with a healthy nonfat, nondairy diet during that time.

Natural Cures for Lyme Disease Symptoms

Lyme disease is caused by bacteria known as Borrelia that is carried by ticks and is identifiable by a circular, reddish rash that appears on the skin. If caught in the early stages, Lyme disease is largely curable by medical professionals through the use of antibiotics. Some evidence suggests that natural remedies may be effective in treating the symptoms of Lyme disease, though you should consult a medical professional before attempting any treatments on your own.

Herbal Supplements

Some doctors recommend a herbal supplement known as Cat's Claw or Samento as a natural treatment for Lyme disease, according to the Health New Age newsletter. The herb is non-toxic and works to rid the body of the Borrelia bacteria. It comes in capsule form and should be taken on a daily basis to achieve maximum results. Symptoms like fatigue, headache and muscle pain will often return if a patient stops taking the herbal supplement.

Additional herbs can also be administered as part of a homeopathic remedy for the symptoms of Lyme disease. Types of herbs will vary, depending on the type and severity of an individual's symptoms, and should be prescribed by a homeopathic doctor for best results. Herbs may include Super Aloe Vera Juice, Ashwangha, Melilotis or Cimicifuga.

Dietary Changes

Julian Whitaker, founder of California's Whitaker Wellness Center, suggests that garlic and foods with a high content of vitamin C can help fight the effects of Lyme disease. Garlic acts as an antibiotic, while strawberries, peppers and citrus fruits help the body to build immunity. This immunity provides relief from the symptoms of Lyme disease that resemble the flu.

Temperature

Joint pain is a common symptom of Lyme disease, which can be eased through the use of hydrotherapy like ice packs or hot compresses. Dull, penetrating pain should be treated with a warm compress, applied right on the painful area. For sharper, intense pain, wrap an ice pack in a plastic bag and a towel and hold it in place on the affected area for 10 to 20 minutes. The treatment should be repeated every four hours until the pain is reduced.

Heat therapy can also be used to strengthen the immune system and reduce the symptoms of Lyme disease. Patients raise their body temperature to around 102 degrees by sitting in a sauna, hot tub or steam bath. This should be done once a day for no more than 20 minutes, according to cindeegardner.com.
