Burdock Root Health Benefits

Burdock Root Health Benefits

Burdock root originated in Europe and Northern Asia and now grows throughout the United States. This common weed forms the basis of many herbal preparations. When cooked, burdock root has a crispy texture and mild, sweet flavor, considered a delicacy. According to the Vitamins and Health Supplements Guide, you may safely consume burdock root. However, pregnant and nursing mothers should avoid it.

Urinary Tract

Burdock root tea acts as an effective diuretic, flushing out excess fluid and toxins through the kidneys. Because of its mild antibacterial action, it is also helpful for urinary tract infections. Make the tea by brewing two oz. of dried root in one qt. of water. According to Marguerite Dunne, of the National Fibromyalgia Association, burdock root tea will soothe the kidneys during detoxification.

Skin Conditions

Because fresh burdock root contains phytochemicals that are mildly antibacterial and anti-fungal, it may be effective in treating acne, ringworm, eczema, psoriasis and other problems. Use the fresh root to prepare a brew for topical use. The University of Maryland lists Burdock root as helpful in treating erythema or skin rash. They warn never to apply it to an open wound.

Digestion and Liver

Burdock root promotes the flow of bile, which may assist in many gastrointestinal conditions. It will help soothe ulcers and promote digestion. According to University of Michigan Health Systems, burdock root has been shown to reduce liver damage in animals. However, no human studies have confirmed its effectiveness.

The oil from burdock root will relieve scalp itching and promote healthy hair growth. It may also reduce dandruff.

Roots from young burdock plants contain vitamin E and vitamin B complex. They also contain many necessary minerals. Ohio State University notes that Native Americans used burdock root as food during the winter, and people in Japan cultivate it as a vegetable.

Traditional Uses and Folk Medicine

Herbal practitioners have encouraged the use of burdock root to relieve arthritis and prevent cancer. There have been no studies to support these claims. Traditional Chinese practitioners use the root to treat sore throats, tonsillitis and colds. Because the root contains insulin, which helps stabilize blood sugar, herbalists use it to treat diabetes.

Clorox Treatment for Toenail Fungus

As long as man has trimmed toenails, treatment of toenail fungus has been subject to lively debate. Nowadays, those not wanting to subject themselves to expensive prescription medication are looking for simple homemade remedies. In addition to cost, liver damage is a known side effect of modern day prescriptions for toenail fungus.

Clorox to the Rescue

One of the main homemade remedies bandied about is topical use of everyday Clorox bleach mixed with water. The foot is either soaked 10 minutes twice a day in the solution or it is applied to the toenail region with a cotton swab, medicine dropper, etc. The dilution ratio of bleach to water ranges from a capful of Clorox to a gallon of water, 20 percent Clorox to 80 percent water, or equal parts Clorox to water.

Other Topical Treatments

Other homemade remedies include topical application of full strength or diluted distilled vinegar (5 percent acetic acid), Listerine mouthwash, Vicks Vaporub, hydrogen peroxide or Lysol concentrate. Vinegar appears to be one of the most popular alternatives to Clorox. Use of a UV light for several hours daily has also been tried.

Alternative Medicine

Alternatively, look to vitamins, herbs or essential oils for a topical treatment to whip the fungus into submission. Oil of oregano and tea tree oil are frequently mentioned products with anti-fungal or antiseptic properties. Oil of oregano make be skin irritant for some. Those familiar with battling candida may recognize recommendations for pau d'arco. Colloidal silver (topically or internally) has been touted as a panacea for many conditions, including toenail fungus.

Good commonsense advice, regardless of your treatment method, include trimming the toenails, washing feet daily, wearing clean cotton socks daily, giving up tight shoes and allowing the toes to air out daily (wear sandals or flip flops). Give up nail polish for awhile. Don't walk barefoot in communal showers at the gym. Also look for ways to treat underlying causes of fungal infections such as diabetes.

Seek Medical Advice

Consult a physician or dermatologist for reliable advice before trying any homemade remedies, including Clorox. Expect any treatment to take time (six to nine months) as the nail grows out.

Natural Remedies Using the Black Walnut Tree

Natural Remedies Using the Black Walnut Tree

The black walnut tree (juglans nigra) is native to North America and is commonly grown for shade, lumber and nuts. Native Americans used it to treat several medical conditions. Although the tree has benefits for humans, it is toxic to some plants, and you should always plant it with care, according to the West Virginia University Extension. Purchase black walnut in liquid extract form, or use its dried bark, leaves and fruit rind in natural remedies.

Intestinal Home Remedies

The bark of the black walnut tree contains astringents, which help tighten skin and mucous membranes. They have a laxative effect when taken internally and may help relieve constipation and discourage diarrhea. Use it to treat the symptoms of parasitic infections in the intestines, according to Herbal Legacy online.

Disinfectant Remedies

Disinfect the mouth and skin with black walnut extract. Sores in the throat and mouth, as well as skin infections such as ringworm, have cleared up with regular use of black walnut. According to Herbal Legacy, black walnut oil also disinfects open wounds and gangrene infections.

Heart Disease Prevention

Although black walnut cannot cure heart disease, it may be preventive against it. According to Nutrasanus online, black walnut's essential fatty acids may decrease susceptibility to heart disease. The essential fatty acids, obtained only through dietary sources or supplements, are particularly abundant in black walnuts.

Natural Way to Get Rid of Gallstones

The gallbladder is a small organ located on the right side of the abdomen, just beneath the liver. It secretes a fluid known as bile, which is released into the small intestine in order to aid in the digestive process. Gallstones are hardened deposits of bile that form within the gallbladder, usually as a result of too much cholesterol or pigment within the digestive fluid. Although it is advisable that you seek medical attention if your gallstones are causing moderate-to-severe pain, there are several natural treatments that may limit your symptoms.

Preventing the development of gallstones is the simplest and most effective natural treatment available. Maintaining your ideal body weight is an important element of prevention. Even slightly overweight individuals are two times more likely to develop gallstones than people who sustain their ideal weight. Those who are seriously overweight are six times more prone, according to MotherNature.com. However, in trying to maintain a healthy weight, is not recommended that you completely remove fat from your diet, as this allows bile to become stagnant and concentrate in the gallbladder. A diet that permits 20 percent of your calories from fat will help thwart the development of gallstones.

Gallbladder Cleanse

Flushing out the gallbladder is one of the most popular natural remedies purported to be effective for ridding the body of gallstones. One such cleanse calls for drinking 20ml of olive oil mixed the juice of half a lemon every day. Later that same day, you should drink the juice from the remaining lemon half. A small, bean-size sliver of raw garlic, finely chopped and added to the oil and juice mixture, may further help with the cleanse. Be aware, though, that gallbladder cleanses may cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea in some people.

Helpful Food, Herbs, and Vitamins

Eating a diet that is high in fiber as well as healthy fat is one of the best alternative, natural therapies available to those who suffer from gallstones. Fish and nuts contain the unsaturated fats you will need, while eating plenty of fruits and vegetables provide essential fiber. Artichoke leaves specifically have been shown to contain certain acids and compounds that stimulate the production of bile. This increase in bile will assist in dissolving the deposits that eventually lead to the formation of gallstones.

Certain herbs have also been suggested as a natural remedy for gallstones. For example, the organic properties of milk thistle are said to block the excessive production of cholesterol while, at the same time, aiding in sustaining a healthy level of bile. According to Dr. Warnock, a naturopathic doctor located in Shelburne, Vermont, it is suggested to that receive the optimum benefit of milk thistle, you should take doses between 70 and 210mg three times a day. Of course, you should consult your personal physician before taking any herbal supplements.

Lastly, those who are lacking in vitamin C, vitamin E, as well as calcium have been shown to have a greater propensity for the development of gallstones. Although according to MayoClinic.com there is not yet enough evidence to conclude that taking these vitamins and minerals alone will prevent the onset of gallstones, it may be worthwhile to consult your doctor about the possibility of introducing supplements to your daily regimen or adjusting your diet to include foods rich in calcium along with vitamins C and E.

How to Treat a UTI at Home

How to Treat a UTI at Home

Urinary tract infections, or UTIs, occur when bacteria enter and colonize the tube that extends from your bladder to the outside world. Urinary tract infections are far more common in women than in men; in fact, the University of Maryland Medical Center states that over 50 percent of adult women will experience at least one UTI in their lifetime. Symptoms include a strong urge to urinate, a burning sensation upon urination and blood in the urine. Antibiotics can take care of a UTI quickly, but home remedies can also be useful in both prevention and treatment. If, however, you start to run a fever or feel pain in your back or abdomen, see a doctor immediately.

If you're prone to UTIs, drinking unsweetened cranberry juice may be able to help prevent recurrent infections as well as shorten the length of an ongoing infection. There is some limited scientific data to suggest that certain compounds in cranberries prevent bacteria from latching onto the surfaces of your bladder and urinary tract. You can also try taking cranberry extract pills. Cranberry juice is generally considered safe even in large doses, although it may irritate your stomach and gastrointestinal system and cause an upset stomach or diarrhea.

Uva Ursi

Uva ursi, or bearberry, is a medicinal herb that has been traditionally used to treat urinary complaints of various sorts. AltMd.com notes that "it is a famous herbal cure for cystitis," another term for a UTI. The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests taking 250-500 mg of uva ursi extract three times daily for up to four days. You can also make a tea from the leaves: pour one pint of boiling water over one ounce of dried leaves; let steep and cool. Drink this tea up to four times a day. People with high blood pressure or kidney conditions and pregnant women should not use uva ursi.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a known immune booster and antioxidant. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends taking 500 to 1000 mg of the vitamin once or twice daily until the infection passes. Avoid high doses of of vitamin C if you have kidney problems.

Lifestyle Adjustments

Drink extra fluids and stay hydrated if you're experiencing a UTI. This helps flush out the bacteria. Avoid coffee and alcohol as well as any other bladder irritants including acidic food and drink such as citrus. Avoid sweetened drinks as well. Use a warm heating pad on your abdomen to reduce discomfort.

Primal Defense Uses

Primal Defense is a whole food and probiotic supplement available in powder and caplet form. It contains "superfoods" such as spirulina, chlorella, wheat grass and alfalfa grass, along with probiotics (beneficial bacterial organisms) that manufacturer Garden of Life identifies with the trademark name Homeostatic Soil Organisms. Ray Sahelian, a physician who writes about nutrition on his website, notes that claims for the use of soil organisms for health are not based on clinical research. Other probiotics such as those found in yogurt, nevertheless, are associated with health benefits. Garden of Life lists several uses for Primal Defense.

Providing Natural Probiotics

The theory behind Homeostatic Soil Organisms is they provide probiotics people would normally obtain if they ate food produced more naturally. Because of pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals, food is disinfected and sometimes irradiated, which kills the probiotics. The Primal Defense official website states the product includes 12 species of beneficial microorganisms.

Balancing Gastrointestinal Bacteria

Garden of Life states that Primal Defense supports the proper balance of friendly and potentially harmful bacteria in the gastrointestinal system. This balance maintains a healthy gastrointestinal environment when other factors may disrupt the bacterial balance. Taking antibiotics, for instance, kills friendly bacteria as well as harmful bacteria, and fungi, parasites and an overabundance of yeast can also upset the balance, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Maintaining Bowel Function

Primal Defense maintains regular bowel function, as explained by Garden of Life. The NIH notes that probiotics may relieve gastrointestinal side effects from antibiotics as well as symptoms of lactose intolerance. Early research shows benefits for treating diarrhea, especially that caused by rotavirus; decreasing the time length of intestinal infection caused by Clostridium difficile; and treating irritable bowel syndrome.

Increasing Nutrient Absorption

The Primal Defense website states the supplement increases benefits of a healthy diet by supporting absorption of nutrients. The NIH notes that friendly bacteria are essential for the digestion and absorption of food and nutrients.

Maintaining Immune System

Primal Defense helps maintain a healthy immune system, according to the website. The NIH explains that friendly bacteria are important for immune system development and for protecting against disease-causing microorganisms. A 2005 study cited by the Mayo Clinic found that a group of employees taking the probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri missed less work because of gastrointestinal or respiratory disorders than did employees not taking the substance.

Additional Uses

Early research supports the use of probiotics for many other health conditions, according to the NIH. It has shown encouraging results in preventing and treating urinary tract and female genital tract infections; decreasing recurrence of bladder cancer; preventing and treating pouchitis, a condition that can develop after colon removal; and preventing and treating eczema in children.

Alternative Treatments for Bladder Cancer

Bladder cancer is the most prevalent cancer of the urinary tract. A majority of people are diagnosed with this condition when it is still confined to the bladder so surgery is a main treatment option. Chemotherapy and immunotherapy are also used in treatment as well. There are herbal medicines that can help with this condition but they are most effective when used in combination with standard therapies. Be sure to tell your doctor about any supplements you are taking.

Herbal Treatments

Astragalus is good for activating the p53 gene. This gene stops defective cells from multiplying. Take 1,000 milligrams three times a day. Cat's claw is a potent immune stimulant with a long history of use. It can raise white blood cells counts decimated by standard treatments such as chemotherapy. Use in tincture form and take as directed on the label in half a cup of water with some lemon juice. Garlic is a potent immunity booster and can complement immunotherapy. Take 900 milligrams daily. Maitake is beneficial after bladder cancer surgery to help decrease the risk of a recurrence. Take 2,000 milligrams three times daily after meals. Red wine catechins found in resveratrol inhibits the cellular processes that cause tumors to form and spread. Take 250 milligrams of resveratrol s three times daily between meals. Siberian ginseng stimulates the immune system and can ward off the negative immune-suppressing effects of chemotherapy agents used to fight bladder cancer. Take the extract as directed on the label.

Do not use astragalus if there is fever or infection. Do not use cat's claw if you have type 1 diabetes. Avoid Siberian ginseng if you have an autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.

Coptis Decoction to Relieve Toxicity is a traditional Chinese formula used to treat bladder cancer. It can stop multiplication of cancer cells and can help prevent immune system damage common to chemotherapy treatment. It should be used under a doctor's care after chemotherapy is completed. Essiac tea is a very popular natural remedy with a very long history of use in North America. It contains many herbs known for their immune-stimulating properties and there are many anecdotal reports of success with cancer. However, studies regarding its effectiveness have been mixed.

Do not use the above Chinese formula within 48 hours of taking Cisplatin chemotherapy.

Bentonite Clay Poultice Recipe

Bentonite clay is a type of clay that's commonly used for detoxification because its electrical charge pulls toxins out of the body. Proponents use it to clean their skin and hair, and if eaten, the clay cleanses colons. One of the most common uses of the clay, found in most health-food stores, is as a poultice.

How Bentonite Clay Works

Bentonite clay is typically found in the Great Plains of the United States and is considered the best clay for detoxification because of its unique swelling properties. Once in contact with water, bentonite clay swells up like a sponge. The electric platelets in the clay draw out the toxins and bind them to the clay's porous surface. Because the clay is luring toxins to the skin's surface, your skin may look visibly worse before it begins to look better after several treatments.

Stings, Rashes, Bites

For bee stings and other common skin problems, use bentonite clay with distilled water. Mix the two together, using only enough water to form a thick paste, and slather it on the problem area. Let the clay dry for about 20 minutes, then rinse it off with cool water.

Stronger Body Poultice

For a more powerful poultice, you'll need the clay and apple cider vinegar. Mix equal parts of bentonite clay with apple cider vinegar until it forms a creamy paste, then slather it on the problem area. Let the clay set on the body for about 45 minutes, then rinse off to pull out any toxins. Be sure not to use any metal objects such as bowls or silverware when mixing this recipe, because the clay can react badly with metal.

To use bentonite clay as a poultice for the entire body, stir a pound of clay with a pint of apple cider vinegar. This time, make sure to add some water to thin out and dilute the mixture slightly so that the higher quantities of clay and vinegar do not aggravate the skin. Apply a thin layer of the mixture to your body. Leave it on for only about 20 minutes, then rinse off. This recipe offers enough clay mixture for two people.

If the clay and vinegar mixture is too drying for your skin, particularly if you're using it to treat acne, follow the treatment with a moisturizer.

Clay Bath

Pouring bentonite clay into your bathwater can offer the same detoxifying effects as a poultice. The Family Hope Center, which aids children with special needs, recommends pouring two cups of clay into your bathwater twice a week for five weeks to get the same results that you would get from a poultice.

How to Develop Antibodies

How to Develop Antibodies

Vaccinations are dead or nearly dead antigens that are injected into the body: Your body develops antibodies to kill them.

Receive a vaccination from your doctor or physician. Vaccinations are usually non-harmful forms of antigens, such as the flu. When injected in small amounts, you body builds up a tolerance by making antibodies to fight the antigens.

Get sick. Any time you get sick, your body develops antibodies to fight the antigens of the virus or disease.

Drink coconut water. Coconut water contains lauric acid which helps build up your immune system. Lauric acid is also found in breast milk.

Eat vitamin C and zinc tablets. Vitamin C and zinc also improve your immune system. Your immune system creates antibodies and T-cells that kill viruses and other diseases.

How to Make Your Own Healing Ointment

How to Make Your Own Healing Ointment

After a minor cut, healing ointment is often used to form a protective layer over the skin. While many household medicine cabinets contain some kind of store-bought ointment, you can easily make homemade healing ointment using simple ingredients. Homemade healing ointments last for months without the harmful chemicals usually found in store-bought ointments.

Traditionally, ointments are made from animal fat, but today's homemade ointments are made from beeswax and oil with added herbs and essential oils that aid the healing process. Herbs like comfrey and chamomile are used to promote cell growth, treating everything from minor cuts and abrasions, to stings, bites, anal itching and eczema.

Making Homemade Healing Ointment

The olive oil should be at room temperature when added to the base mixture.

Fill the lower part of your double saucepan with water and bring to a boil. Add cup of beeswax to the upper part of the saucepan. Once the wax has melted, reduce the heat and add 1 cup of olive oil, creating the base for your healing ointment. This will yield 1 cup of ointment.

Comfrey is used in homemade healing ointments because it promotes fast healing.

Add 1 teaspoon of tea tree oil to the base mixture. Do not add tea tree oil to mixture until it has been removed from the stove and transferred into the bowl. Exposure to heat will cause the tea tree oil to evaporate. Tea tree oil is important for homemade healing ointment because it is a natural antiseptic.

Transfer the ointment into the storage jars while it is still warm. Allow the ointment to fully cool before putting the lids on the jars to avoid condensation. Explicitly label your ointment jars so they aren't mistaken for food and store them in the refrigerator once the ointment has reached room temperature.

Kidney Cleansing Drinks

Kidney Cleansing Drinks

A good cleanse is designed to reduce the numbers of toxins in internal organs, such as the kidneys. Since the kidneys filter waste from your body, keeping them in optimal shape is important. One way to do this is to consume drinks that have cleansing properties.

Water is one of the best drinks available for your body. Consuming water and exercising on a regular basis has a natural cleansing effect. According to the Mayo Clinic, drinking water on a regular basis can even help the body flush kidney stones.

According to studies published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, a caffeine-free green tea has the same hydrating and flushing capabilities as water. Additionally, teas made from herbs that have diuretic and herbal medicinal properties for the urinary tract, such as dandelion, can promote cleansing of the kidneys by flushing them. Dandelion also contains potassium, which helps to dissolve crystals that form kidney stones.

Apple Juice

Apples contain pectin, which is an excellent substance for cleaning out both the colon and urinary tract. Pectin can help target heavy metals such as aluminum, lead and mercury in the body and help to flush them out. Apple juice is high in antioxidant vitamins such as the B vitamins and flavanoids. Unfiltered apple juice still retains pulp, which can help cleanse the colon and insure that those toxins don't end up in the kidneys as well.

Celery and Parsley Broth

A broth made with celery and parsley is rich in a substance called apiol. Apiol is known for its antiseptic properties in the kidneys. Apiol has been isolated and used in traditional medicine to treat kidney stones. Both parsley and celery have diuretic properties, which make them ideal for flushing the kidneys as well.

Citrus includes juices made of oranges, limes, grapefruits and lemons. All three juices are high in acid content, which dissolves crystals that eventually form stones in the kidneys. Citrus fruits are also antiseptic and antimicrobial in the body. Lemons, limes and grapefruit contain limonoids, phytonutrients that fights toxic compounds including carcinogens. Limonoids also have the same antioxidants found in green tea. Grapefruits contain licopene, the same antioxidant that gives tomatoes their color and flavor.

Choose one herb at a time to work with so you can test how it works. I also take extra Vitamin C, quercetin (note that garlic has quercetin) and grapeseed extract if my allergies are really bad.

My favorite way of taking any of the herbs listed above is with a tea. So the instructions for making a tea with the herbs are listed below. But, you can also take a pill. Just follow the instructions on the bottle.

Place the loose herb in a tea strainer or drop tea bag into the mug.

Pour boiling water into the mug.

Let steep for at least 10 minutes. If using stinging nettle, steep for around thirty minutes.

Remove tea strainer or tea bag. Sweeten and enjoy.

Vitamins for Under-Eye Circles

Vitamins for Under-Eye Circles

Under-eye circles can be frustrating and embarrassing. Often times, they are not caused by anything in particular but are a genetic trait. Other causes of dark circles include allergies, lack of sleep, kidney problems, poor nutrition and even pregnancy. One way to help reduce under-eye circles is with vitamin supplements. It's best to work with your doctor to choose the right supplements, as you don't want to risk taking too high of a dose and doing more harm than good.

Vitamin K

Vitamin K is one of the best vitamins to help treat dark under-eye circles. It helps blood around the eyes clot, which prevents any seepage which is what leads to dark circles. While there are creams that can be used under the eyes that contain vitamin K, you can also take vitamin K supplements or eat food rich with vitamin K. Those foods include kiwi fruit, cabbage and spinach.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a way to also reduce the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. It protects against free radicals, which age the skin, especially the eye area as the skin under the eye is very thin. It also increases collagen in the skin. These all decrease under-eye circles. It's possible to receive enough Vitamin C through food or supplements. Food sources include broccoli, collard greens, blueberries, oranges and avocados.

Iron deficiency can lead to dark under-eye circles. A lack of iron is caused by some issues brought on by menstruation and pregnancy. The body loses iron during both of those times. The skin becomes more pale and the veins more prominent. This leads to a darkening effect. Take iron supplements or eat foods such as spinach, liver, prunes or raisins to boost iron levels and reduce under-eye circles.

What Is an Alternative for Threelac?

Threelac is a supplement widely promoted to eliminate a systemic Candida infection. While it has its proponents, Threelac is not without detractors, some of whom say that its use has caused systemic bacterial infections, and some of whom have serious concerns about the bacteria it contains. If you have a systemic Candida infection, there are some alternatives you can consider.

A first alternative to managing a systemic Candida infection is to change your diet. To "starve" the Candida infection, reduce if not eliminate all sugars from your diet. Eat yogurt with active cultures, beneficial bacteria that will help restore the proper balance of your system. For best results, you need to not only eliminate sugar from your diet but control foods that contain sugar precursors, including carbohydrates. This includes almost all processed and prepackaged foods. Managing Candida using diet is possible but difficult.

The supplement Syntol contains more than 3 billion beneficial bacteria colony- forming units. These beneficial bacteria compete with Candida and help reestablish your natural beneficial bacterial flora. Syntol is recommended because it contains more colony-forming units than other supplements; it has several lactobacillus bacteria species that have an additive effect. It also includes certain enzymes that will act on the Candida yeast, killing it.

Probio5 retards the growth of Candida through a combination of enzymes including protease, peptizyme and cellulase. This supplement helps restore your beneficial bacterial flora. Like other probiotic supplements, Probio5 will work best in combination with other efforts and not as a solitary solution.

Home Remedy for Nausea & Hot Flashes

Nausea and hot flashes are two uncomfortable conditions that don't always go together and usually have very different causes. Yet there are certain herbal and alternative remedies that can be used to treat both conditions. There are also some good commonsense methods that will help you cope with both nausea and hot flashes. It is helpful to first differentiate between the two conditions.

What is Nausea?

You are experiencing waves of queasiness and dizziness. It's hard to keep anything down. You want a remedy eases or cures your nausea. But first, you need to find out what's causing it.

If your nausea is caused by food poisoning, overdose or poison, your system is trying to get rid of deadly poison. Get immediate medical help. The same is true if a heart attack, kidney or liver disease or another serious condition is causing nausea. But once you are sure your nausea is not life-threatening, there are many excellent home remedies to treat it.

What are Hot Flashes?

You are a woman who feels fine one moment, and the next feels too warm, flushed, sweating and very uncomfortable. You are experiencing a 'hot flash' because your blood vessels, particularly those in your face, are dilating. This vasodilation is caused by hormonal changes in your body, usually due to menopause. Medication may or may not be indicated, but you will want to treat your symptoms so you feel better. There are a number of home remedies that can help.

Home Remedies for Nausea

Peppermint tea and peppermints work great for nausea, but they must contain real oil of peppermint, not just flavoring. Also, try a few drops of oil of peppermint in water. Parsley, sage and rosemary relieve gas and stimulate digestion. Ginger, anise, chamomile, cinnamon, fennel, goldenseal and red raspberry leaf teas all help with nausea. Ginger-ale and soda crackers can help with short-term nausea (the cracker's baking soda helps rid your stomach of excess acid).

A remedy for motion sickness nausea is acupressure. Take your right hand thumb and first finger and apply gentle steady pressure on the skin between your left hand thumb and first finger. You should feel the nausea lessen. Fresh, cool air will also help. Warm, stuffy air increases nausea.

Home Remedies for Hot Flashes

Ginger tea, raspberry leaf tea and sage tea sweetened with anise are all effective for hot flashes. Chamomile and linden flower tea are also good. Always keep the air around you fresh and cool, particularly when sleeping; stuffy warmth can trigger a hot flash.

Black cohosh and dong quai supplements have phytoestrogens -- naturally occurring plant-based non-steroidal estrogens that can ease you through the hormonal changes that cause hot flashes.

Home Remedies for Nausea and Hot Flashes

Ginger, cinnamon, anise seeds, licorice root, star anise, fennel, chamomile and goldenseal all help with both nausea and hot flashes. In particular, anise, star anise and fennel contain phytoestrogens, and they also help settle the stomach. And remember ---lots of fresh, cool air helps to ease both nausea and hot flashes.

How to Naturally Cure Dizziness

The cause of dizziness is actually a lack of proper communication between your balance centers and your brain. Though it's rarely a serious problem, dizziness effects many people, and the prescription medications given are usually unnecessary and harsh on the body. Below are some of the more effective ways to naturally cure dizziness problems.

Try eating licorice, or take it in supplemental form. If you suffer from low blood sugar which is believed to be a factor of your dizziness, then you should try taking licorice. It's best to take it in supplemental form, or use licorice tincture in drinks, but tea can also be used.

Take Ginkgo in supplemental form. Ginkgo helps to relieve dizziness by helping to improve the blood supply to the brain. It's best to take a gingko extract that is somewhere around 25% glycosides. Glycosides is the active ingredient that helps with the dizziness. Take around 50 milligrams 2-3 times per day, or as needed.

Try eating something high in fiber. If you're feeling a bit light headed and suffering from dizziness, it's most likely caused from low blood sugar. It's best to eat something, but be careful with your selection. Try to eat something high in fiber but minimal in sugar. Also try to avoid simple carbs, including white flour.

How to Make A Relaxing Foot Soak

How to Make A Relaxing Foot Soak

Take time out to prepare yourself or a loved one a relaxing foot soak. The basic ingredients are inexpensive and easy to find. The priciest component is the fragrance: a small bottle of good-quality lavender essential oil can cost around $10, but because you only use a few drops at a time, it can last several years.

Gather together 1 cup each of sea salt, Epsom salts and ordinary white vinegar and 1/2 cup dried lavender flowers or a few drops of lavender essential oil and place these ingredients in a tub or basin big enough for both of your feet.

Heat some water on the stove as warm as you can stand to have on your feet. Add to the ingredients in the tub.

Mix the water briefly, using your hand. Place your feet in the basin or tub and add hot or cool water as desired to adjust the temperature to your preference.

Alternative Treatments for Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are found on the bottom of the feet and are characterized by a soft center surrounded by rough rings. There may be little black dots, which are bits of coagulated blood. These warts can be painful and affect posture. Like genital warts, they are caused by a strain of human papillomavirus (HPV). Natural treatments for warts work more slowly than their conventional counterparts, but they are pain free and inexpensive.

Herbal Treatments

Aloe vera gel has strong antiviral and antibacterial properties. Apply to the wart two to three times a day until it is gone.
Astragalus keeps the immune system functioning properly, which is important for preventing and healing warts. Take capsules as directed on the label.
Bloodroot is a well-known natural topical agent used for removing warts and skin tags. A good paste is available from Omega Labs. Apply as directed on the product label and cover with a bandage.
Bromelain strengthens the immune system and contains enzymes that help dissolve warts. Take 2,000 milligrams three times daily. If you are allergic pineapple, you may develop a rash when using bromelain. Discontinue use if a rash appears.
Olive leaf is one of the strongest anti viral herbs available; take 250 to 500 milligrams three times daily.
Reishi mushroom is a powerful immune stimulant that also has strong antiviral properties; take 150 to 300 milligrams three times a day.
Cat's claw is good for stimulating the immune system and fighting off viruses; take 20 milligrams three times a day.

Other Suggestions

Make a garlic patch by covering the wart with olive or castor oil, and place a thin slice of garlic over it. Keep these treatments in place for 24 hours, and replace if necessary. Place a piece of tape over it to hold it in place.
A study led by A. Schneider published in a 1990 edition of Nutrition and Cancer found that pork intake is strongly linked to the growth of warts and tumors caused by HPV.

Natural Cure for Joint Pain

Joint pain is caused by conditions like arthritis, which break down cartilage, cause inflammation and make joints stiff and swollen. Many natural treatments are available that can relieve the discomfort of these conditions. Successful natural treatment strategies usually involve a combination of methods that work together to get at the root of the problem rather than masking symptoms. You do not need to take every supplement suggested, as certain ones offer similar benefits. Consulting with a health care provider experienced in natural medicine can help you design an effective regimen.

Dietary Suggestions

Consider getting tested for food allergies and sensitivities. When you eat something your body cannot properly process, it causes inflammation, which will trigger and worsen joint pain. The most common allergens are dairy, wheat, soy, and food preservatives and additives. Other inflammation-promoting foods include meat, refined and processed white flour foods, fried foods and baked goods high in table sugar, like cookies and candy.

Increase your intake of foods that combat inflammation. They include foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids like cold-water fish, nuts and seeds, garlic, onions, watercress, horseradish, mustard, parsley, celery, pickles and lemons. Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables; they contain many beneficial substances that fight inflammation and promote joint health.

A combination of glucosamine and chondroitin promotes overall joint health. Take 500 to 1,500 mg of a combination supplement daily. SAMe (s-adenosyl-methionine) decreases inflammation; take 100 to 200 mg in the morning before breakfast.

Turmeric and bromelain are two herbs well known for their action against pain and inflammation. Take 40 mg of bromelain three times a day or 300 mg of turmeric three times daily. Cat's claw (20 mg three times daily) and devil's claw (200 mg three times daily) are potent anti-inflammatories. Willow bark, which contains similar compounds as aspirin, is a natural pain reliever. Take 500 mg no more than three times a day. Do not use this supplement if you are taking blood-thinning medication.

Alternative Treatment Modalities

The University of Maryland Medical Center states that acupuncture has been found to be very effective for relieving joint pain in several well-designed trials. Chiropractic care has also shown benefit. It can relieve pain as well as improve flexibility, range of motion and joint coordination, especially when combined with glucosamine/chondroitin supplementation and exercise.

Mind-Body Connection

Reducing stress and engaging in activities that engage the mind-body connection can relieve pain. These include things like meditation, yoga, tai chi, deep breathing and positive visualization. Experiment with different ones to find a technique that you enjoy, and aim to do it regularly.

How to Treat Cardiomyopathy with Natural Remedies

One way to treat Cardiomyopathy is with natural remedies. Cardiomyopathy is the medical term for weakening in the heart muscle or a change in the structure of the heart muscle. Below are some natural remedies that can be used to help treat, and possibly cure, Cardiomyopathy.

Take 2 grams of Taurine in supplemental form three times throughout the day. Taurine is an amino acid that has been proven to help improve cardiomyopathy. This treatment can take several months for results, so be sure to continue this treatment for at least 12 months.

Take around 2 grams of L-Carnitine in supplemental form daily. L-Carnitine is an amino acid, and a deficiency in L-Carnitine is often associated with the development of cardiomyopathy.

Take Selenium in supplemental form daily. Selenium deficiency is common for many patients with cardiomyopathy, and is even the main cause of Keshan's Disease, which is a form of cardiomyopathy often found in China.

How to Use Lavender to Treat Eczema

How to Use Lavender to Treat Eczema

Eczema is group of skin conditions that can affect different people in various ways. Some people show symptoms with dry itchy patches of skin, while others feel burning and suffer from bleeding. Lavender has soothing properties. People who have "dry" eczema (no open sores or lesions) may be able to treat their symptoms with it.

Measure 2 tbsp. each of fresh lavender buds and oatmeal. Use plain oatmeal only for this recipe, not the flavored kind.

Put the lavender and oatmeal in a blender and pulse until it is thoroughly mixed. The lavender's scent should be quite strong.

Spread out some cheesecloth. You may need to use more than one layer so the mixture does not fall through. A muslin bag or other porous material can be used as well.

Take the lavender mixture out of the blender and place it in the center of the cheesecloth. Pull up the sides to make a bag. Use a piece of string or ribbon to tightly close the bag, leaving a length of string hanging down.

Run a warm bath, adding 2 to 4 drops of lavender essential oil to the tub. The oil will help create a calming vapor with the steam from the bath.

Use the long end of the string from the lavender-oatmeal bag to tie it on the bathtub faucet. The bag should be completely immersed in the water.

Rub the bag on your dry skin as you bathe. The mixture may help treat the itchiness as you relax in your scented bath.

Add a drop of lavender essential oil to some plain, unscented body lotion. Apply to your skin after bathing.

How to Use Colloidal Silver for Health

How to Use Colloidal Silver for Health

Colloidal silver is a natural and powerful antibiotic and even aids in the prevention of infections. Colloidal silver disables the metabolic processes that bacteria, viruses and fungi need to grow without damaging the necessary enzymes that the body needs to maintain a healthy balance. There are a number of ways that colloidal silver can be used to maintain health by ridding the body of disease causing organisms.

Take colloidal silver orally by placing the manufacturer's recommended dosage under your tongue for at least 30 seconds before swallowing. You can also speak to a naturopath about dosage information for treatment of specific ailments and conditions.

Use colloidal silver orally to help your body fight viral infections and to help stop a cold or flu abruptly if taken at the first signs of symptoms. Taken orally, colloidal silver can help rid the body of pathogens or toxins and can speed the healing of minor burns and even reduce scarring. You may regularly take colloidal silver orally as a preventative measure, helping to ensure good health and a strong immune system.

Double the dosage amount for up to 30 days in order to treat acute or severe illness. Health practitioners often use this "therapeutic" dose of colloidal silver to treat acute conditions of the skin, lungs, liver, kidneys and bowels.

Use colloidal silver topically as a disinfectant and antiseptic. Colloidal silver can be used to clean surfaces but does not damage tissue cells, therefore it can also be used directly on the skin. Safe even for young babies, colloidal silver can be applied to infected eyes, cuts and abrasions on the skin. Some manufactures provide colloidal silver sprays which can be used as a household cleaner, a nasal spray or a natural deodorant.

How to Make a Treatment for Edema in the Feet

This treatment is perfect for Edema in the feet. This natural treatment can be used daily to help relieve Edema in the feet, or used to treat Edema that affects only one foot. I suggest using this treatment for Edema daily. If you would like to use this as a preventative it can be used 2-3 times per week, or as needed.

Peel the potato and then slice it into thin slices and then place into a foot bath. If you have a Mandoline, I suggest using that with a setting that is between thin and medium slices.

Cut the cucumber in half then remove the seeds. Unless you have a seedless cucumber. Gently peel the cucumber, then cut the cucumber into thin slices. If you have a mandoline, use the thinnest setting it offers. Place the slices into the foot bath.

Gently sprinkle the Sea Salt evenly over the cucumber and potato slices. Follow this with the Raw Honey, trying to spread the honey over the area somewhat evenly.

Fill the foot bath about 2/3's or until the water will reach to around mid ankle. Soak your feet in the treatment for a total of 20 to 30 minutes then rinse the feet off quickly with warm water.

Harmful Effects of Edta

EDTA stands for ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. It is used in chelation therapy for patients with lead poisoning, digoxin toxicity and atherosclerosis. It has side effects which can be harmful if not treated.

In the 1940s, EDTA was first used to treat patients with heavy metal poisoning. EDTA chelation therapy is approved by the Food and Drug Administration, and about 1 million patients undergo the treatment each year, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

EDTA is a chelating agent. It has the ability to bind to metal ions. This reduces the reactivity of the metal ions in the blood. EDTA is an antioxidant as well. It prevents free radicals from damaging blood vessels.

Chelation therapy is the main application of EDTA. It is also used by dentists in root canal work. EDTA can let physicians monitor kidney function by measuring the amount of EDTA passed in the urine from the time of injection.

Side Effects

Injection site burning is a common symptom associated with EDTA. More serious side effects include reduced blood sugar, reduced calcium levels, very low blood pressure, irregular heart beat, kidney failure and death.

A medical health professional should monitor patients during EDTA chelation therapy. Vitamin and mineral levels should be tested before, during and after treatment. Supplements should be taken to replenish lost vitamins and minerals.

Laser Therapy Treatment for Calcifications

Calcification is a condition where calcium accumulates and hardens in the body tissue and bones. When calcium hardens on the bones, it can cause painful bone spurs. Most calcium is absorbed by the body and used to promote the health and maintenance of teeth and bones. About 1 percent of calcium winds up in the blood stream.

Bone Spurs

Bone spurs often occur on the end of a bone or on joints that endure a lot of weight. Bone spurs are commonly located on the spine, and when they rub against other bones or nerve endings, they can cause pain. The pain can prove so extreme that your range of motion becomes limited and your lifestyle is banefully affected. People with conditions like spondylosis, spinal stenosis and osteoarthritis are more likely to develop bone spurs and calcifications. The bone spurs can be treated safely with laser therapy.

Laser Therapy Techniques

Laser therapy involves the use of low intensity lasers to remove bone spurs via a non-invasive procedure. An infrared light is used to help diminish pain and promote healing. Cold laser therapy helps promote tissue regeneration on a cellular level and encourages proper blood flow to the area where calcifications have formed. The laser therapy encourages the blood to eliminate debris that would otherwise inflame and aggravate the bone spurs. While the bone spurs might remain after cold laser therapy, the site is treated so that pain can be permanently eliminated via laser therapy treatments.
The laser generates photon energy that is absorbed by the body, promoting the release of energy to intensify cellular metabolic processes. This act further promotes normal cell functioning. Damaged issues are repaired quickly with laser therapy, and inflammation and swelling are also effectively minimized.

How Laser Therapy is Performed

Since the benefits associated with laser therapy are cumulative, patients are required to have several sessions. Anywhere from five to 20 treatments might be required from a chiropractor or a clinic offering laser therapy treatments. Each session can last from 30 to 60 minutes, depending upon the severity and pain. Low level laser therapy involves the use of infrared light at energy ranges that fall between 1 and 500 milliwatts. Cold laser therapy further involves the utilization of a subthermal laser that exposes areas of the body to the invisible light rays that promote healing. A machine like the Microlight 830 applies the infrared light in a professional medical setting.

How to Use a Home Remedy for Nail Fungus

How to Use a Home Remedy for Nail Fungus

Nail fungus usually occurs when the toenails are exposed to damp public areas, such as the gym, swimming pools or public bathrooms. Nail fungus causes your nails to become discolored, and a foul smelling substance will begin to grow under the nail. You may also experience pain at the nail site. There are several home remedies you can use to cure nail fungus.

Use tea tree oil. Placing a small amount of tea tree oil on the affected toe will clean the toe out and also act as a fungicide.

Soak the infected foot in a mixture of equal parts warm water and apple cider vinegar. The mixture works as an antiseptic.

Mix oregano oil and olive oil. Place a few drops on the nail fungus. Oregano oil has antiseptic, antibacterial, analgesic and antifungal properties.

Apply grapefruit seed extract. Another remedy that you can use is to spritz the extract onto the affected site twice a day.

Dry feet thoroughly after placing any type of home remedy upon them. Damp toes will breed more fungus.

What Are the Effects of an Oxygen Bar?

What Are the Effects of an Oxygen Bar?

Oxygen bars are places you can go to breathe purified oxygen for a range of alleged health benefits. Recreational oxygen use was pioneered in countries like Japan and Mexico after concerns about pollution drove people to seek healthier air. Nowadays, oxygen bars in the States have started appearing in clubs, casinos and malls and are part of a growing new health trend. However, many dispute the benefits and say an increased intake of oxygen will have little or no effect in a healthy individual.

FDA Regulations

Oxygen bars are allowed in certain states at the discretion of the FDA.
Oxygen bars are allowed in certain states at the discretion of the FDA.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sees recreational oxygen use a violation of its regulations, as this agency considers a person using any type of oxygen dispensed by another as using a prescription drug. However, the FDA does give individual states the power to regulate recreational oxygen use themselves. This means that some states will allow it, whereas others will heavily regulate it.

Alleged Benefits

Increased oxygen intake is said to benefit athletes.
Increased oxygen intake is said to benefit athletes.

Even though oxygen bar companies are wary of claiming any actual medical benefits to recreational oxygen use in light of FDA regulation, many outline the possible increased health benefits. For example, users say that oxygen will increase energy and mental agility and reduce stress, headaches and tiredness associated with the effects of modern air-conditioned offices. It is also claimed that oxygen will have beneficial effects on your beauty, maintaining a healthier complexion and clearer looking skin, plus a better immune system. As for benefits in sports, many maintain that taking oxygen before and after physical activity can reduce recovery time and increase performance.

Possible Health Risks

Individuals with health concerns should be cautious about using oxygen bars.
Individuals with health concerns should be cautious about using oxygen bars.

At some oxygen bars you can choose to inhale scented oxygen, which according to the FDA, could be a cause for concern. While some scents are achieved by using safe food-grade particles, others are made by using aroma oils. In the worst case scenario, when inhaled some oil-based substances can lead to an inflammation of the lungs.

According to Mary Purucker, M.D., Ph.D., a pulmonary specialist at the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), those with conditions such as asthma, some types of heart disease, pulmonary hypertension and other conditions that require the regulation of oxygen intake also need to be careful. In some of these cases, increased oxygen inhalation could do the patient harm; you should always talk to your doctor before considering going to an oxygen bar. However, the opinion of the American Lung Association is that for healthy individuals, using oxygen bars will have very little effect. If they do, these effects will wear off almost immediately.

Honey Therapy for Wounds

Honey has been used as a topical antibiotic to treat wounds for thousands of years, dating back to Aristotle (384-322 B.C.) and Dioscorides (circa 50 A.D.) who mentioned it for treatment of sores and ulcers. The use of honey for medicinal treatment has been mentioned in religious texts, including the Bible, Veda and the Koran. Modern medicine and pharmaceuticals have diminished the practice of using honey to treat wounds, but note the benefits. Placing raw organic honey on a cut, burn, scrape or wound, will serve as an antibiotic and speed healing time.

Why Honey Heals

Honey actually kills the bacteria that create the infection. Honey's high concentration of sugar makes it almost completely void of moisture. This makes honey replicate a dry sponge soaking up fluid from the infected area. A topical application of honey kills the bacteria by absorbing liquid and depleting moisture from the infection. Without moisture, the infecting bacteria cannot flourish and die. In addition, honey naturally produces hydrogen peroxide, which is commonly sold in drugstores and is used to disinfect cuts and wounds. Honey contains a variety of flower compounds (phytochemicals) collected by bees that swallow, digest and regurgitate nectar. Many types of nectar have strong antibacterial properties, making honey a strong natural antibiotic.

Topical Honey

Use Manuka honey, which comes from the Manuka trees indigenous to New Zealand. It has exceptionally high antibacterial properties. Buy this honey at your local health food store. Clean the wound with soap and water to disinfect the area, then dry. Apply honey directly to the clean wound. Judge the proper amount of honey to apply based on how much fluid or oozing is present. The more oozing from the wound, the more honey you will need. As the honey begins to work, the wound fluid will decrease. Cover the wound with sterile gauze to keep the honey in place. Repeat the application and change the bandage twice a day or more if an abundance of fluid is present on the gauze.

Eczema (Atopic dermatitis) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder characterized by dry, itchy patches on the face, the insides of the elbows, behind the knees and on the hands and feet. Eczema--with its unsightly, itchy, blotchy patches--can be successfully treated with a topical solution of equal parts raw (unprocessed) honey, beeswax and cold-pressed olive oil. Melt the beeswax in a pan, remove from heat, and add honey and olive oil. Stir until thoroughly blended while the mixture is still warm. Store the mixture in a clean plastic cosmetic bottle and keep in the refrigerator for up to three months. Apply the mixture topically to eczema-inflicted areas three times a day.

How to Make Hips Appear Wider

There are plenty of tutorials out there that address the topic of how to make your hips thinner. There are also articles that discuss avoiding articles of clothing that make hips inadvertently look larger. But you do not always see information about how to make hips appear wider. It is surprisingly easy to create the illusion of wider hips. Probably the quickest and easiest way to add some heft to your hips is to wear a light colored pant and a dark colored top. There are several other ways to make your hips appear wider and you can learn about them in the following steps.

Use color to your advantage. Try to wear a dark color on top and a lighter color on bottom. Wearing a light colored pant will create the look of fuller hips.

Select bulky fabrics and prints to enhance the width of hips. Thick fabrics can add bulk and horizontal stripes can make the body appear wider.

Accentuate your waist to make your hips appear wider. The appearance of a small waist creates the illusion of fuller hips. Draw attention to your waist by sporting a belt or tucking in your top.

Select pants that will make your hips appear wider. Choose pants that are high waisted with a tapered leg. Pants with pleats and pockets also tend to add the appearance of curves. Avoid wearing white washed denim; wear a solid color pair of jeans instead.

Toss on a double breasted jacket. A double breasted jacket, especially one that ties in the front, tends to divide the body, thereby adding heft to the hips.

Choose dresses or skirts that button down the front. The row of buttons will make your hips look wider.

Vitamins That Help You Stop Smoking

Quitting smoking is a difficult process due to the highly addictive nicotine content present in tobacco. Withdrawal from smoking can cause mood changes, weight gain and insomnia, making it difficult to adjust to the non-smoking lifestyle. Natural vitamin remedies can be effective in providing the body with a defense system to fight against the nicotine cravings and undesirable side effects of smoking cessation.

Regulate Mood Swings

Vitamin B-6 helps metabolize fat and proteins, and protects against tooth decay, high cholesterol, heart disease and diabetes. Vitamin B-6 also complements the nervous system by synthesizing the neurotransmitters, serotonin and dopamine.

Regulation of the nervous system is effective in maintaining mood swings of anxiety, depression and irritability frequently experienced during smoking withdrawal. In addition, serotonin helps with insomnia that may result from smoking cessation.

Taking a daily supplement or eating foods rich in B-6 may work to curb cravings and weight gain associated with quitting smoking. Cereal, potatoes, bananas, beans, nuts and meat are among the foods containing the highest levels of vitamin B-6.

Gain Calming Effects

Withdrawal symptoms of restlessness and irritability occur as nicotine levels in the body drop. The calming feeling thought to be obtained by smoking a cigarette is in fact relative to the physical addiction to the substance. The body begins to have difficulty adjusting to a lower level of nicotine stimulation, which can stunt the cessation process by creating a feeling of agitation leading to cravings.

Vitamins B-12 and B-5 are natural calming agents, reducing stress and fatigue while promoting better sleeping habits. Insomnia and anxiety associated with quitting smoking may be alleviated using a vitamin B complex. The stress-relieving properties of the B vitamins may act as a substitute for cigarettes, naturally reducing levels of nervousness and irritability.

Vitamin B-12 and B-5 are found in whole grains, nuts, tuna and bananas. As supplements, they are available separately or within a vitamin B complex.

Restore the Body

Smoking creates oxidation of the organs, depletion of collagen, and cadmium toxicity of the kidneys and lungs. These harmful effects of smoking deplete the body of vitamin C, resulting in a deficit of the levels needed for optimum health and energy.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant, providing natural protection as an immune defense from environmental radicals and viruses. Vitamin C helps keeps the body strong, energized and healthy, restoring the body's immune system and cells. Once the body can retain vitamin C due to smoking cessation, it begins to feel physically and mentally energized. The sustainable qualities of vitamin C work toward curbing mental and physical addiction to nicotine associated with cigarette and food cravings.

Citrus foods, broccoli, red and green peppers, and spinach are examples of foods rich in vitamin C content. Vitamin C supplements are available at drugstores and health stores.

Instructions for a Cell Spa

Instructions for a Cell Spa

Cell Spa is a brand of detoxifying foot bath systems used for relaxation and healing. The Cell Spa foot bath is believed to help remove chemicals and toxins acquired from medications, environmental pollution and processed foods, but more scientific research is needed to determine whether foot spas can effectively remove toxins. Cell Spa foot baths are designed for easy use, but you must follow important instructions to use it effectively at home.

Wash your feet thoroughly before using a Cell Spa foot bath. Use mild soap and a pumice stone to remove bacteria, dead skin and any debris sticking to your feet. This will also soften your feet and remove dead skin cells to allow for better absorption during the foot bath.

Remove all metal and battery-operated objects on your person. It is believed that the metal in these objects may interfere with the conductivity of the electrical current necessary for an effective foot cleanse. Items include cell phones, watches, belts, jewelry and change.

Fill a plastic basin with comfortably warm water. If possible, use purified water; the chemicals in processed water, can lead to inaccurate results during the detoxifying process. Leave 2 inches of space at the top to prevent overflow.

Position your Cell Spa ionic foot bath on a flat, level surface near the water basin and plug the device into a working outlet. Plug the end of the ionic array module into the opening labeled "Array" on the side of the Cell Spa device. Press the "On" button located on the back of the device to power on the system.

Place the ionic array module in the bottom of the water basin. The negative ions produced by the ionic array module create a gentle vibration that aids the release of unwanted toxins through the pores on the sole of the foot. Submerge the ionic array module completely, or you may get inaccurate results when performing the foot cleanse.

Select a detoxification time by pressing the "A" button on the front of the machine. Press "Select" when the LCD displays the desired amount of detoxification time, ranging from 15 to 30 minutes. The Cell Spa LCD display will blink three times before displaying your selected detoxification time.

Add 1 tbsp. of iodized salt to the water, raising the ion density to an optimal level for detoxification. Place your feet in the water basin and use your toes to stir the salt around. In a short amount of time, the water will change colors and reveal the toxins extracted from your body through the Cell Spa foot cleanse.

Remove your feet from the basin after the Cell Spa timer rings. Wash your feet with soap and clean water to remove any elements from the foot bath. Unplug the machine and rinse all objects under clean water, then allow the pieces to air dry before storage.

Home Remedy to Fight an Infection

In addition to being painful, infections can cause serious health problems and, if left untreated, permanent damage to your body and even death. If you are unable to get to a doctor, or don't want to take antibiotics, try home remedies for getting rid of some common types of infections that can help you feel better and stay healthy. Please remember to check with your doctor before starting any type of home treatment, especially if you have complicating medical issues.

Sinus Infection

If you have a sinus infection, thin out the mucus that accumulates in your nose so that it can drain properly. To do this, inhale steam vapors several times per day by placing your face over a hot bowl of water and inhaling the steam through your nose. Be careful not to burn yourself in doing this. Also, eat garlic, either raw or in capsule form, as garlic is thought to be a natural bacteria fighter. Combine the garlic and steam treatment by placing garlic in a steaming bowl of water and inhaling the vapors. Nasal irrigation is extremely effective, but may cause discomfort to some people. In this treatment, warm salt water is poured or gently forced into one nostril, and allowed to drain out of the other nostril. This helps clear out mucus and particulates that are clogging up your nose, encouraging drainage.

Yeast Infection

There are numerous options to treat a yeast infection, a few of which involve applying natural bacteria fighters to the infected site. For example, apply yogurt (which is filled with natural "good" bacteria) to the afflicted site, as well as raw garlic, several times per day. If you do this, be sure to rinse the area after each application. Water is also important for fighting off an infection; drink extra water (filtered, preferably) when suffering from a yeast infection.

Ear Infection

For ear infections, such as swimmer's ear, rinse the ear thoroughly using a warm saline solution, or with a combination of 50 percent water, 50 percent white vinegar. Also, apply hydrogen peroxide to the inside of the ear, as well as garlic that has been heated in mustard oil. If you apply any substance to your ear, always rinse the ear thoroughly.

Holistic Treatment for Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a skin condition where areas of the skin lose pigmentation. The exact causes of this condition are unknown. Natural treatment strategies are available, but consistent use is important; it can take several months before any noticeable changes occur. Like conventional medicine, not every treatment will work for everyone. Consulting with a health care professional experienced in naturally treating skin conditions is your best bet for designing a natural treatment strategy. There is no cure, and treatment aims to slow the spread and restore pigmentation to the affected areas.

Herbal Therapy

Children younger than 6 should take one-quarter of suggested doses, while children between 6 and 12 should use half.

Dong quai blocks the formation of antibodies that attack the skin; take 1,000mg daily.

Khella encourages repigmentation of the affected areas by increasing the sensitivity of melanocytes (pigment producing cells) to sunlight. Take 160mg daily. Do not use if you take blood-thinning medications.

Picorrhiza is an Indian herb that might reduce the number and size of white patches. Use as directed on the product label.

St. John's Wort helps vitiligo-affected skin tan better; apply daily to affected areas for three to four months.

The Mayo Clinic reviewed a number of studies examining ginkgo as a treatment for vitiligo. The clinic suggests taking 40mg three times a day to stop the spread of vitiligo; in some cases, it might also promote repigmentation.

The traditional Chinese formula Shih Qua Da Bu Tang is a popular treatment for loss of skin color. Use as directed on the label.

Natural Sunlight

Get out in the sun for 15 to 20 minutes every day without sunscreen. Combining UV therapy with the supplement L-phenylalanine can contribute to repigmentation. Children should use 1,000mg daily while adults need 3,000mg daily. Vitiligo increases the chances of getting sunburn and melanoma so besides your daily 15 or 20 minutes of sun exposure for treatment purposes, wear sunscreen on exposed areas.

Other Suggestions for Vitiligo

The following suggestions do not treat the condition but can help you manage it. The most obvious reason for wearing sunscreen is to protect your skin for harmful rays. It also prevents normal skin from becoming darker, which makes your vitiligo more noticeable. Using a sunless tanning cream on white spots can add color to them. Experiment with different concealers formulated especially for vitiligo; it can take some trial and error to find the one that best matches your skin tone.

What Are the Health Benefits of Charcoal Tablets?

Activated charcoal tablets have the capacity to adsorb a large amount of chemicals. Adsorb means that the charcoal can hold chemical molecules to its surface. Charcoal's capability has made these tablets desirable and widely used in industries that specialize in products for home improvement and personal health. The tablets are a beneficial addition to first aid kits that people keep in their campers, cars and houses.

First Aid for Brown Spider Bites

Bites from brown recluse spiders, scorpions or hornets can be treated with an immediate treatment of activated charcoal tablets. Use the charcoal tablet by wrapping it in a cloth and pounding into poultice. Then lay the cloth on the bite. The charcoal inside the poultice wrap helps to carry toxins out of the body by its adsorbent properties. While this treatment can be effective, it is still important to see a physician as soon as possible after receiving a bite.

Air Filters for Allergies and Asthma

Those people who suffer allergies brought on by pollutants in the air inside their homes, air filters with charcoal inserts might help. They can be found on the Internet as well as in home improvement centers. The charcoal tablet in the air filter works as the pollutants in the air enter the filter and are adsorbed by the charcoal. This characteristic is especially important for people with asthma or those who have allergies to particles in the air. The charcoal inserts can also have the benefit of helping get rid of odors.

Poison Control

If someone accidentally ingests or absorbs poison, food-grade charcoal tablets have been known to help. Some poisons that can be neutralized by charcoal tablets include carbon dioxide, chlorine and hemlock. The charcoal tablet is ingested into the body as soon as possible after the poison has been swallowed. The charcoal will then adsorb the poison, thus attaching it to itself on its journey through the body. This chemical reaction between the charcoal and the poison will limit the damage that the poison could ordinarily cause to the body. Although charcoal tablets can be used as a first measure, always call the poison control center first if someone ingests any form of poison.

Alternative Treatments for Psoriatic Arthritis

Psoriatic arthritis is a chronic inflammatory condition that causes joint pain and stiffness. Psoriasis is first a skin condition, but 30 to 40 percent of people with psoriasis end up with psoriatic arthritis. If not treated, it could cause permanent damage to the joints. Most doctors prescribe anti-inflammatory medications that include prescription medications, such as corticosteroids, or over-the-counter medications, such as aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen. Alternative treatments can be used hand-in-hand with these medications to relieve even more of the inflammatory pain.

Stress Release

Stress tends to trigger inflammation in our bodies. By relieving as much stress as possible, you will relieve some of the pain caused by the arthritis. To relieve stress, try meditation therapies. When your joints are in the least amount of pain, try yoga courses or techniques that focus on stretching and breathing. Physical activity can also reduce stress, but it should be limited to walking, swimming or building muscle with weights. Therapy sessions will help with the loss of self-confidence and the release of stress.

Food Choices

Certain foods could trigger inflammation in our bodies, so by finding out which products disrupt your body, eliminate them and eliminate extra inflammation. To do so, eliminate all possible culprit foods from your diet, and reintroduce them one at a time. These include wheat products, dairy products, raw vegetables, raw fruit, alcohol and caffeine, nuts and seeds, eggs and soy products. If they do not seem to cause a disruption in your body, keep eating them, especially if they are healthy choices.

Certain supplements and vitamins could cause a positive reduction to the inflammation in your body. These include glucosamine and chondroitin, which together have been proven to reduce inflammation. Fish oil capsules contain omega-3 fatty acids, also known for reducing inflammation. Eating certain types of fish, such as salmon, swordfish and trout, will provide omega-3 fatty acids. Probiotics, taken in pill form or eaten in certain types of yogurt, create good bacteria in your body and could help relieve inflammation. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) and S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) are two more effective, natural supplements in relieving joint pain.

Physical Options

Other alternative options provide you with the physical reduction of pain, which include massages that improve circulation, acupuncture that release the flow of energy through the body and can relieve inflammatory pain, mattresses that contain therapeutic magnets (mostly back pain), according to EverydayHealth.com. Therapeutic magnets can be worn wherever and in the form of bandages, braces, wraps and inside shoes. These alternatives have proved to help arthritis pain, according to RevolutionHealth.com, but not psoriatic arthritis specifically.

How to Raise Seratonin Naturally

Serotonin, also known as 5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT, is derived from tryptophan and is naturally produced in the brain. It is a neurotransmitter that affects many bodily systems and functions. The role of serotonin is to transmit messages within different parts of the brain. Serotonin affects mood, thermoregulation, learning, sex drive, sleep, eating patterns, pain regulation and social behavior. There is evidence that serotonin levels may play a role in SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) and fibromyalgia. There are ways to raise serotonin levels naturally.

Consume carbohydrates. Foods high in carbohydrates increase tryptophan. The increase in tryptophan increases serotonin production. Choose healthier carbohydrates such as whole grains or high-carbohydrate vegetables. Higher-carbohydrate vegetables include squash, yams and sweet potatoes.

Include proteins known to increase tryptophan. These include low-fat dairy products, chicken, white fish, legumes or soy.

Spend time doing activities you find calming. Consider adding yoga or meditation to your daily activities. Listen to calming music or spend time reading a book. Schedule regular massage therapy. Massage can raise serotonin levels. Sleep for a minimum of seven hours a night.

Spend time in the sunshine. Natural sunlight decreases melatonin levels. Melatonin decreases serotonin levels. You should have a minimum sun exposure of 30 minutes in the morning and an additional two hours throughout the rest of the day.

How to Use Alternative Treatments for an Abscess

An abscess is an infected area of the skin that has been walled off by the body so the infection stays in one location. This is a survival mechanism the body uses to protect itself from widespread infection. Such areas can cause pain, pressure and irritation, and appear red or dark pink. The symptoms will not be relieved until the infection is expelled through the skin. An abscess can be a signal of a deeper-rooted problem in the body. If you are prone to this condition, you could have a weak immune system, poor nutrition, bowel infection or diabetes. There are many alternative avenues of treatment designed to heal your body of abscesses.

Supplement your diet with zinc and vitamin C, two substances that are known to stimulate the immune system. Because of a possible bowel infection associated with the abscess, some health care professionals prescribe a vitamin C flush, which means taking high doses of this vitamin, to the point of bowel tolerance. Adding vitamins A and E to your diet will contribute to healing the abscess after the infectious substance has been removed.

Make a compress for your abscess. Chinese medicine believes abscesses are caused by an overabundance of body heat, which may be caused by infection. A compress is made from the herbs chamomile, sage or thyme to draw out the heat of the abscess and relieve pain. Change the compress three to four times a day.

Use lachesis as a homeopathic treatment if your abscess has a bluish/purplish color. Professional homeopaths believe that abscesses may be a symptom of some other, more acute ill in the body. The homeopathic treatment is to introduce an extremely diluted substance that would produce the same symptoms in a healthy person. This removes the toxic effect of the original malady.

Change your diet. If you eat a lot of junk food that consists of white flour, white sugar, fatty foods, fried foods and simple carbohydrates, you must reduce or eliminate them. Eat lean meats, vegetables, fruits and whole grains and nuts, and you will shortly see an improvement in your body's production of abscesses.

Inhale essential oils. These oils are very concentrated; therefore, you only need a few drops on a cloth. Place them on your pillow at night so you can inhale them while you sleep. The essential oils that are helpful for abscesses are clary sage, lavender, patchouli, rose and rosewood. A compress may also be made from these essential oils; however, remember to dilute them by adding only a drop or two to a cup of water.

Take an herbal remedy for your abscess. Herbs that have been shown to be helpful in remedying abscesses include burdock, German chamomile, slippery elm and wild yam. These substances are generally safe, with no side effects. However, the amount you use should be prescribed by a health-care professional.

Drink a small amount of water containing the essence of poke root or dagger hakes. They can sometimes be found in a cream form, so you can rub them directly onto the abscess. Flower essences heal on the emotional and mental level, their vibrations conforming to the idea that illness is a symptom of a negative belief system.
