Anxiety Management Strategies

For some people, anxiety can be an overwhelming condition, causing sweaty palms, nausea, constant worrying, irritability and avoidance. Many prescription medications are marketed to ease anxiety symptoms, but they each come with their own list of side effects. Here are a few strategies that do not require medication but still help to keep anxiety under control.

Preparing yourself for an uncomfortable situation might keep it from triggering your anxiety. For instance, if you feel anxious in big crowds, then prepare yourself before an event where you know you will be surrounded by lots of people. Try sitting quietly by yourself for a few minutes before joining the larger group. If you're anxious about public speaking, plan out and rehearse your statements beforehand.

Exercise is particularly helpful for people who cannot sleep at night due to their anxiety. If you get in a good workout around 4 pm, then your body will eliminate any stimulants remaining in your system, such as caffeine. Your body will also be exhausted due to the workout, making falling asleep much easier.

Eliminate Negativity

For some people, negative thoughts are what leads to anxiety. For example, if a person is thinking "I can't do this" or "This is out of my control," then they are likely to experience anxious feelings. Try making a list of negative thoughts that often enter your head. Next, replace those negative thoughts with positive ones, and read them over whenever you're feeling anxious and negative.

Distract Yourself

When you start to feel anxiety coming on, distract yourself with an activity. Try to remove yourself from what's making you anxious. Watch a light movie or call a friend to help you think about other things.

Get Out of the House

Don't let your anxiety keep you inside your room. Often, in facing your fears you will realize that your fears are worse than the actual thing you are fearing. Being alone with anxious feelings will only make things worse.

Problems With Inversion Therapy

Problems With Inversion Therapy

Perhaps you saw gravity boots in the blockbuster film American Gigolo and thought they were cool or downright silly. Though favored by some, inversion therapy is not for everyone. According to Dr. Randy A. Shelerud of the Mayo Clinic, inversion cannot guarantee more than temporary relief from back pain. And even just a few minutes of hanging upside down will increase blood pressure and decrease heart rate.

Inversion might not be for you.

History and Description

"Inversion therapy has been used to relieve back pain since about 400 BC when Hippocrates (father of medicine) strung up a patient on a ladder with ropes and pulleys and allowed gravity to do its work," says Dr. John Daugherty, a Colorado chiropractor. Yet in the United States the concept of inversion did not take off until the 1960s. It started as a way to provide spine decompression, prevent pooling of fluid in the extremities, improve circulation, release tension on the spine and maintain good health. By 1982 the inversion business was pulling in over 70 million dollars and had thousands of followers, explains Dr. Daugherty.

Inversion Therapy Types

Inversion can be accomplished with inversion tables, benches, chairs, swings, and gravity boots. The Gravity Guidance Inversion Table was one of the original devices for inversion. There are now numerous brands of inversion devices that range in price from under $100 to $400. Yet poorly built equipment can also result in problems with inversion. Do your research before buying.

Some people intensely dislike the feeling of being upside down and should avoid it. Others need to be careful about the angle at which they hang. Being inverted more than 30 degrees from the floor does not provide any additional therapeutic benefit, according to Dr. Gottesman, a Colorado chiropractor. Even well-conditioned athletes do not need to invert to this extent. Do not use gravity boots for inversion because they jeopardize spine stability. Without this stability, twisting and torquing can lead to other spinal problems.

    Inversion increases eye pressure.

According to Dr. Gottesman people with high blood pressure or heart disease, pregnant women, those who have had back surgery, those with glaucoma, and stroke victims should not be inverted. Inversion increases blood and eye pressure. Dr. Daugherty further recommends that you get approval from your physician before inverting if you have skeletal implants, a hiatal hernia, extreme obesity, or retinal detachment.

Inversion works with gravity instead of against it. For the lymphatic system, which has no natural pump, being upside down can help eliminate toxins. According to Dr. Daugherty it can also relax muscles, lessen stress, and provide ligament mobility. Being inverted can lengthen the spine, and it places less pressure on the discs than lying down. Dr. Gottesman says it is also a great alternative to more expensive therapies or surgeries if you can tolerate it.

Soothanol X2 Side Effects

Soothanol is an alternative topical treatment used to help reduce joint pain. While generally considered safe, its ingredients may cause several side effects that should be understood before use.

Soothanol X2 is an alternative treatment designed to soothe joint pain, using ingredients such as olive oil, peppers and dimethyl sulfoxide. It is meant to be used topically.

Because Soothanol contains substances that are acidic, contact with the eyes and mucous membranes can cause adverse reactions. This can result in mild irritation or burning sensations.

Dimethyl sulfoxide, also called DMSO, is an ingredient of Soothanol. This substance can sometimes cause an unpleasant odor similar to garlic if taken in high quantities.

Soothanol is meant to be used externally on the surface of the skin. It can cause adverse effects if swallowed.

Menthol in Soothanol may possibly cause allergic reactions such as a rash or itching at the area of application. Product use should be discontinued if these reactions occur.

How to Avoid Colonoscopy

How to Avoid Colonoscopy

People often have colonoscopies when they exhibit some of these symptoms: irregularities or blood in bowel movements, abdominal pain or sudden weight loss. While colonoscopies are necessary for some, they are extremely uncomfortable. During a colonoscopy a doctor inserts a long tube up the anus and through the rectum of the patient. There is a camera mounted to the tube that transmits findings onto a video screen. The doctor can take samples of problematic looking tissues or remove polyps. To avoid a colonoscopy you need to avoid problem signs of unhealthy bowels. You can do this by practicing healthy habits.

Strive to eat five to seven servings of fruits and vegetables per day, half of which must be raw. Raw fruits and vegetables have a higher content of fiber which is necessary for healthy bowels. Fiber is like a brush that scrubs down the intestines, helping to remove toxins.

Avoid processed foods, such as white breads, pastas, packaged chips, frozen dinners, hot dogs, packaged lunch meat and canned beans. Refrain from eating food made with refined sugars, such as sugary breakfast cereals, packaged cookies, juices, cakes, donuts, condiments and candy bars. The less processed foods and refined sugars that you ingest, the better your intestines will be.

Eat in small quantities. You don't want to overwhelm you digestive system by giving it piles of food to break down all at once. Practice portion control. Don't eat an amount of food larger than two of your own fists. Also, don't eat during the two hours before you go to sleep; this can affect the proper digestion of food.

Drink more water. Drinking eight cups, or 64-ounces, of water is the absolute daily minimum. However, a liter more per day is ideal, particularly if you exercise or drink coffee, soda or tea. These things dehydrate the body. Water is crucial for optimum intestinal health: it keeps feces from drying up and allows them to move fluidly along the intestinal tract. Intestinal disorders which require colonoscopies like irritable bowel syndrome can be caused from toxins building up over time.

Take a probiotic supplement twice a day with meals. Common probiotic strains are: Lactobacillus acidophilus, L casei, L GG, and Bifidobacteria. Probiotics are essentially healthy bacteria that can help prevent or fight certain diseases, assist the immune system and help in the proper digestion of food. Probiotics may also be necessary if the balance of bacteria in the stomach has recently been thrown off by anitbiotics, which kill both good and bad bacteria, or if you've had parasites. There is evidence that probiotics can fight bowel diseases like Crohn's or ulcerative colitis; such diseases require colonoscopies a few times a year. According to the National Institutes of Health, taking probiotics can prevent bowel diseases and the colonoscopies that such diseases entail.

Exercise 30 minutes a day, not just because this is beneficial for your overall health, but because it stimulates muscle activity which can assist peristalsis: the movements which push food along the digestive tract.

Natural Remedies For a Stuffy Runny Nose

While a stuffy and runny nose are symptoms of relatively mild conditions such as allergies, the common cold or a sinus infection, they can be aggravating to the sick individual. Not only does holding a tissue all day get annoying, but a stuffy nose can lead to headaches, as well. Fortunately, there are many home remedies to cure both a runny and stuffy nose and provide relief for other symptoms as well.

Runny Nose: Spicy Foods

According to, spicy foods make a person's nose run for an entirely different reason and in the process cleanse the nose of any toxins that are causing the condition.

Runny Nose: Homemade Saline Solution

It's easy to make a solution at home that will help get rid of a runny nose. Simply mix 1 tbsp. of salt in a cup of water warmed to room temperature. Ensure the salt is stirred in well and place one drop in each nostril using a medicine dropper. Gently inhale the solution and immediately blow your nose. This will remove the bacteria, toxins and dust that caused the nose to run.

Stuffy Nose: Honey

Using honey is a simple, yet effective, way to relieve a stuffy nose. Simply place a drop of honey on your finger and put it in your nostrils, then lie down for a few minutes to allow the honey to work. It may sting a little bit, but your nose will soon either start running or you'll start sneezing, relieving the congestion.

Stuffy Nose: Steam

According to, one can also steam away a stuffy nose. While a hot shower may provide temporary relief, boiling water in an old-fashioned tea kettle will allow the ill person to inhale more steam. Simply place the kettle, filled with water, on the stove to boil. Once steam is coming out of the kettle, lean forward a little to inhale the steam, which will help shrink the membranes and allow the nose to drain.

Home Remedies for Digestive System Cleansing

The digestive system's main functions are to digest food, remove toxins and eliminate wastes. But if the digestive system is not functioning well, you feel tired and sick and are more susceptible to diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome, gall stones and viral infections, just to name a few. Cleansing the digestive system with home remedies is one way to flush away harmful wastes and get the organs of the digestive system running smoothly again. Not only will you feel better, but you will be healthier too.

Drink Fluids

The American Dietetic Association recommends a person drink at lease 8 cups of fluids each day. This includes water and water-based beverages like herbal tea and juices. Avoiding sodas, other caffeine and alcohol also helps to keep the digestive system healthy. Liquids hydrate the body and supply the fluids needed to create gastric juices and other digestive fluids like bile. Water relieves constipation by adding more water content to the fecal matter. The water also moves the wastes through the digestive tract and out the anus. A clean colon helps all the organs in the digestive tract. According to the article "How Food is Digested" on the Ellie Whole Grains website, if the fecal matter is not removed regularly, the colon may reabsorb some of the toxins.

Eat Fiber

Fiber is a very important nutrient for the digestive system. The fiber keeps the digestive tract running. The Mayo Clinic article "Constipation" advises a person to eat 20 to 35 grams of fiber each day for digestive health. High-fiber foods like fruits and vegetables add bulk to a meal and this makes a person feel fuller. This cuts down on overeating. Fiber also adds volume to fecal materials so elimination is easier. Foods are the best sources of fiber, but a fiber supplement can also be taken if your digestive tract is sluggish. By eating enough fiber each day you can help prevent conditions like constipation.

Exercise Each Day

According to the "Constipation" article, exercise stimulates colon activity. In fact, exercise gets all the muscles moving, including those in the digestive system that use muscle contractions to push food down the digest tract. The article "Be Active Your Way" on the Federal Citizen Information Center website reports that exercise is shown to prevent diseases like diabetes and heart diseases. Any type of exercise is beneficial to the digestive tract because physical movement burns fat. Exercise helps a person lose weight and removes toxic substances that are often stored in fat. For advice on choosing a good exercise program, consult with an accredited personal trainer or your doctor.

Massage Methods for Treating Scoliosis

Nearly 6 million Americans suffer from a spine deformity called scoliosis, which causes the spine to bend abnormally. Although it does not cause severe physical harm, it causes the shoulders, hips, or waist to look uneven. In severe cases, scoliosis also causes significant back pain.

Reducing the curvature of the spine is one of the main goals in scoliosis treatment, which several massage therapies address. These massage methods manipulate the tissue surrounding the spine, straightening it.

Deep Tissue Massage

A deep tissue massage can reduce the pain and severe curvature of the spine, reducing the appearance of scoliosis. It brings circulation to the muscles by massaging each individual muscle, stretching it out. This also reduces the curve of the spine by reducing stress on it. According to the Institute For Integrative Healthcare Studies, this massage method is most effective for people under the age of 25 because the spine is easier to manipulate.

Cranial-Sacral Therapy

Cranial-Sacral Therapy is another massage method used to decrease the severity of scoliosis. It massages the tissues surrounding the spine, increasing the body's mobility. This reduces the appearance of scoliosis.

Rolfing, a massage method used to treat back pain, significantly reduces scoliosis by massaging the connective tissues around the spine. According to "Rolfing Structural Integration: What It Achieves, How it Works, and Whom It Helps" by Hans Georg Brecklinghaus, this allows the spine to lift up, lengthening the spine. This reduces the curve of the spine, reducing severe bends in the spinal alignment.

How to Use Gingko Leaves

How to Use Gingko Leaves

Ginkgo Biloba is known for its vast array of health benefits including increased circulation, decreased fatigue and improved brain function. While it is possible to get a regular dose of ginkgo from capsules and pills, other methods require dried ginkgo leaves and some added participation on your part. Homemade ginkgo tea and homemade tincture are two uses of ginkgo leaves that can provide all the benefits that you would get from taking a daily pill.

Ginkgo Tea

Boil 2 cups of water in a medium saucepan to serve one person. Adjust the amounts accordingly for the number of people.

Remove the water from the heat, and add 10 ounces of dried ginkgo leaves. Again, adjust this measurement based on the number of people to be served.

Allow the tea to steep for 10 minutes.

    Strain the tea and serve.

Ginkgo Tincture

Place 150 grams of dried ginkgo leaves in a jar. Be sure to use a jar that has a properly fitting lid.

Add 17 oz. (500 ml) of vodka to the jar.

Place the jar in a dark place for a month and shake the jar daily.

Strain the leaves after a month in the dark. Be sure to press all of the liquid out of the leaves.

Store the liquid in a glass jar and take 1 tsp. per day.

Natural Ways to Reduce Fluid Retention

Natural Ways to Reduce Fluid Retention

You don't have to reach for a pill to reduce fluid retention. Some of the easiest and most effective ways of banishing the bloat are right in your kitchen. By doing little things to take care of yourself each day, like eating a wholesome diet and drinking plenty of water, you can minimize the possibility of water retention.

Reduce Salt (Sodium) Intake

One of the easiest ways to reduce water weight is to reduce salt intake. Whether it's using a salt shaker to season your meal or eating too many canned goods, a high intake of salt in the diet will make you feel more full. According to the MayoClinic it's important to "pay attention to hidden sources of sodium, such as soy sauce, canned vegetables, soups and deli meats."

Reduce Intake of Processed Foods

Essentially, the closer to nature you eat, the less you will have to deal with retaining water. Whole foods have low amounts of salt versus canned goods and frozen dinners, many of which are loaded with preservatives and high amounts of sodium. Restaurants can also be problematic; they often serve foods saltier than your own seasoning. The Mayo Clinic recommends that people "eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains. Avoid caffeine and alcohol."

If eating on the run is a must, try to order more vegetables and less fried food. For example, a salad would be a better option versus ordering fries or fried chicken. Watch portion sizes, too --- or save some of your meal for later.

Drink Water

Although drinking lots of water when you are dealing with water retention may seem counterintuitive, it's actually what your body needs. Often water retention can be a sign of dehydration. In order to prevent being dehydrated, drink several glasses of water each day.

Consume Some Key Foods

Reach for a banana to ease the belly bloat.
Reach for a banana to ease the belly bloat.

Nutritional approaches are often effective. For example, try to eat a banana each day. Bananas are rich in potassium, which helps banish fluid retention. You could also try drinking cranberry juice, a natural diuretic. To reap the most benefit, drink it unsweetened or combined with sparkling water. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which tend to dehydrate the body and thus promote fluid retention.

Check Your Medications

Many medications and medical conditions can cause fluid retention. Kidney disease, heart failure and hypothyroidism all cause water retention. If you experience persistent water retention, let a doctor rule out serious medical problems.

How to Use Caprylic Acid

How to Use Caprylic Acid

Caprylic acid, also known as Octanol Acid, is a natural, anti-fungal fatty acid found in coconuts and animal milk. Diets and supplements use caprylic acid in conjunction with a change in diet and increase of fiber to eliminate yeast and fungal infections. Despite the lack of research to support health benefit claims of caprylic acid, many nutritionists recommend using coconut milk or oil, goat's milk or the capsule form of caprylic acid to one's diet.

Take two caprylic acid capsules with an eight ounce glass of water 30 minutes before meals. Ingesting before meals may help deter some of the side effects, for instance, nausea. Due to the lack of in-depth research, The Integrative Practitioner suggests not exceeding a dosage of 1200 mg per day.

Take one to two tablespoons of extra virgin coconut oil daily. The ingestion of coconut oil by the spoonful may be easier to swallow than capsules. According to the Coconut Board of India, coconut oil has health benefits such as ease of digestibility, reducing fat accumulation in the body and inhibiting chemical carcinogens.

Goat's milk is another form of caprylic acid.
Goat's milk is another form of caprylic acid.

Drink four to eight ounces of goat's or cow's milk daily for those who do not like coconut. Besides the caprylic acid, goat's milk and cow's milk contain other nutrients beneficial to human health.

Alternative Treatments for Graves' Disease

Graves' disease is a form of hyperthyroidism where the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland and causes an overproduction of the hormone thyroxine. It is the most common form of hyperthyroidism. Women are more likely to be affected than men, and it typically occurs after age 20. Symptoms include weight loss no matter how much is eaten, increased perspiration, feeling of being hot, irritability, insomnia, fatigue, protruding eyeballs, hair loss, rapid heartbeat, shortened periods and increased bowel movements. Many natural treatments can help with this condition.

Herbal Treatments

Bugleweed tablets alleviate increased perspiration, fatigue, insomnia, nervousness and irritability. Take as directed on the label. Motherwort tea eases heart palpitations. Drink three cups daily.

Several Chinese formulas are used to treat Graves' disease. The formula Eight Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia stops excessive sweating. Gentia Longdancao Decoction to Drain the Liver is useful if one is experiencing symptoms of irritability and short temper. It is especially helpful for women with shortened periods. Honey-Fried Licorice Decoction treats anxiety, irritability, insomnia and weight loss.

Herbs that stimulate the immune system should be avoided. They include aloe, American ginseng, astragalus, bamboo, burdock, chrysanthemum, echinacea, ginger, ginseng, lemon balm, Siberian ginseng and wheat grass.

Herbs and pharmaceuticals are assigned suggested doses based on one of their most important pharmacological properties, therapeutic range. Therapeutic range is the smallest dose that provides any medicinal benefit to the largest dose that is safe for consumption. Do not take more than suggested.

Other Suggestions

Take 200 to 600 international units of vitamin E daily. It shields the lining of the heart cells from free radical damage. A study published in the March 1997 "Journal of Experimental Biology" found that this vitamin stabilized the heart rate and prevented arrhythmias in animals with hyperthyroidism. For those who experience eye problems, cold compresses can relieve discomfort. Protruding eyes are more vulnerable to UV rays and light. Sunglasses that wrap around the head are especially good because they block out wind, which is another potential irritant.

How to Use Home Remedies to Treat Impotence

How to Use Home Remedies to Treat Impotence

Impotence, also referred to as Erectile Dysfunction (ED), can affect a man at any time in his adult lifetime. It is attributed to both physical and psychological causes, and mainly affects men above the age of 65. Sexual impotence varies in severity from an inability to maintain an erection to an inability to get an erection. Luckily, there are a number of simple, natural home remedies that you can use to treat this condition.

Crush or finely chop a few garlic cloves. Combine 1 tablespoon of the crushed garlic with 1 tablespoon of honey. Take three times a day. For centuries, the Chinese have revered garlic as a natural, mild, yet effective aphrodisiac. Ayurvedic folk healers prescribed honey for the same purpose. Substitute ginger for the garlic for an even milder aphrodisiac.

Boost your libido using onion. Onions - particularly white onions are believed to be second only to garlic for enhancing sexual health and improving male libido. Take yours raw or in the form of onion juice. You can also make an extract by finely chopping up two large onions, and steeping in 2 cups of warm water for 10 minutes. Drink 1/2 a cup three times daily.

Pour two cups of milk into a pan. Add cup of grated carrot and warm this on low heat for 10 minutes. Take cup three times a day for a week. Substitute the carrot with asparagus. Carrots have been proven to help fight impotence. Asparagus is also believed to possess aphrodisiac properties.

Make a trail mix that combines cup each of black raisins, walnuts, prunes, walnuts and dried apricots. Crush these ingredients in a blender and then stir in 1 cup of honey. Store your mixture in an air tight container. Three times a day, take 1 tablespoon about an hour before your meals.

Prepare an herbal tea from hops (hunulus lupulus). Place one tablespoon into a cup and cover with 1 glass boiling water. Cover and steep the hops for 15 minutes. Strain and drink -cup two times a day before your meals. Take the remedy for ten days, stop for a week and then take it again for another seven days.

Red Clover Leaf Side Effects

People take red clover leaf extract for a variety of reasons. Because it can have effects similar to the female hormone estrogen, women use it to relieve symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, and to help prevent osteoporosis. Additional uses include lowering cholesterol and relieving symptoms of prostate enlargement. Side effects are uncommon.

Upset Stomach

Some people experience upset stomach or nausea when taking red clover leaf extract.

Hormone Drug Interactions

Because it acts similarly to estrogen, red clover leaf may interact with estrogen or progesterone and increase their effects. It also may decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills.

Blood Thinning

Red clover leaf also may increase the effects of anti-coagulants such as warfarin, so people on blood thinners should avoid taking red clover leaf. People who have had a stroke, or who have a blood clotting disorder or other cardiovascular disease, also should not take red clover leaf.

Hormonal Considerations

People should not take red clover leaf if they have a history of hormone-related cancer, such as cervical or ovarian cancer.

Allergic Reaction

Rarely, people have a severe allergic reaction to red clover leaf. Signs include a rash or hives, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, and facial or mouth swelling.

What is the Future of Massage Therapy?

What is the Future of Massage Therapy?

Many treatments once considered unnecessary or unprofessional by business and medical industries are now being reexamined in the light of new research and widespread acceptance. Massage therapy is one of these fields. Over the past two decades, it has become accepted as a treatment option for many common muscle conditions. The rise of respect for the field of massage therapy will continue to affect the practice in the future as well, bringing new challenges and increased expectations.

There are several types of massage. Massage therapists typically specialize in multiple types but focus mostly on deep-tissue massage and techniques that allow them to address particle issues in the bodies of their clients, such as muscle knots that are causing pain or the build-up of toxins within specific muscle tissues. Most massage therapists still work as independent contractors, although some are hired by spas and other businesses.

Work-Based Massage

Work-based massage has experienced rapid growth in recent years and is expected to continue to grow. This is an arrangement where a massage therapist is contracted by a company to come into a workplace at regular intervals, usually once a week, and offer massages to employees, which the company will pay for. An increasing number of companies may begin to hire massage therapists with exclusive contracts.

Continuing Acceptance

The medical industry as a whole is expected to continue accepting massage therapy as a reliable treatment for certain simple medications. This means that more doctors will be recommending massage therapy to their patients, and the massage field will become more closely intertwined with the mainstream health industry. Other more alternative treatments such as acupuncture will also begin to earn similar respect.

Increased Certification

As the field of massage therapy grows, the number of colleges offering massage courses will increase at a rapid pace. Some of these programs will be good, and others will not be. To help maintain the skill level of massage therapists, certifications are already being offered by third-party organizations. Entrance exams for the programs will continue to become more difficult, and certification programs will grow as an attempt at quality control.

While the positions available for massage therapists are currently growing, they will eventually hit a point where business, medical professions and individuals have as much access to massage treatments as they desire. When these demands are met, the number of positions for massage therapy will drop quickly, and some therapists who have recently completed their training may find it difficult to find work.

Uses of Lemon Grass Powder

Uses of Lemon Grass Powder

Lemon grass powder is a seasoning made from dried aromatic lemon grass. Also known as Cymbopogon citratum, it is widely used in Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian, Malaysian and Indonesian cooking. However, it is also a diuretic and a stimulating tonic used for its medicinal properties. Further uses of lemon grass powder include its commercial use as a mild insect repellent and as an ingredient in soaps and perfumes.

Asian and Caribbean Cuisine

In Asian countries, lemon grass powder is used to flavor many meat, seafood and poultry dishes. Lemon grass powder combines very well with coconut milk, in particular if the dish is made with seafood or chicken. It is widely used to bring out the flavor in curries, especially vegetable curries.

This aromatic herb is also used in the Caribbean to flavor soups, especially seafood soups. It blends well with chilies, garlic, cilantro, galangal, ginger and Kaffir lime used in Caribbean cuisine.

Lemon grass is becoming popular in the United States and is sold to the public and to restaurants for Asian curries, stews and soups. It is grown in California and Florida and can be found in supermarkets under the name sereh.

Pickles are often spiced with lemon grass powder, and the herb is used extensively in flavoring marinades, especially marinades of chicken and seafood.

Medicinal Teas

Lemon grass has been cultivated in India for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. The Chinese use lemon grass tea to relieve headaches and soothe abdominal pain. Mixing the ground lemon grass with pepper is used in Ayurvedic medicine to relieve nausea and menstrual problems. Lemon grass in traditional Brazilian medicine is used as an analgesic, as a sedative and to relieve muscle cramps and spasms.

The herb is a stimulating tonic and a mild diuretic. It stimulates perspiration, and in Asia it is thought to help lower fevers and cool the body in hot weather. Lemon grass powder made into a tea is also used externally to treat scabies, lice and ringworm. Excessive doses of lemon grass powder should be avoided during pregnancy.

The primary component of lemon grass powder is citral, which is an aldehyde with strong anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties. High in folic acid, it is also rich in essential vitamins, including thiamin, pyridoxine and pantothenic acid. For this reason, it is used in many herbal teas.

Mild Insect Repellent, Soaps and Perfumes

Lemon grass is a mild insect repellent. It is the main ingredient in citronella candles which help ward off insects and mosquitoes. Lemon grass powder is valued for its exotic citrus fragrance with a slight aroma of rose. For this reason it is used commercially in soaps and fragrant sachets. It is also used in perfumes to give them an intriguing lemony odor. Some massage oils contain lemon grass.

Ways to Spark New Frontal Hair Growth

According to the Mayo Clinic, hair loss affects one-third of men and women. It can be troubling; however, options do exist. To spark new frontal hair growth, you could try several easy remedies. In addition, you might benefit from aromatherapy or even over-the-counter and prescription medications.

Natural Remedies

Consider trying some basic home remedies to spark hair growth and prevent future loss. Use a mild shampoo, such as a baby shampoo, and only wash your hair every other day. After bathing, allow your hair to air dry and rub your scalp gently with a towel. If you have to blow dry your hair, keep the blow dryer on its lowest setting. Avoid combing or brushing your hair when it's wet, as this could cause it stretch and break.

Make sure you're getting enough protein, as it's needed by every cell in your body, including those that work to regrow and make hair. Iron deficiency can also contribute to hair loss, so make sure your diet includes plenty of iron-rich foods. If you can't get enough iron from diet alone, consider taking an iron supplement. To help prevent further hair loss, take 100mg of Vitamin B6 a day. Don't take more than that, though, without first discussing it with your doctor. High amounts of Vitamin B6 can be toxic.

Aromatherapy and essential oils might also spark new hair growth. After washing your hair, add one drop of rosemary essential oil to a cold water rinse on the affected area. Rub thoroughly. There's no need to rinse, and rosemary will give your hair a nice shine, too. Valerie Ann Worwood, author of the "The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy," says that the cold water also stimulates blood capillaries, which helps move nutrients to the affected area.

Along with aromatherapy and home remedies, medications could also spark new hair growth. For men struggling with male-pattern baldness, the medication Propecia may be helpful. According to the Mayo Clinic, this medication is taken daily in pill form, and hair growth and reduction of hair loss could take several months. Women should not use or even handle this product, though, as it could cause birth defects in male fetuses.

The non-prescription medication Rogaine is also indicated for the treatment of hair loss. Rub this liquid or foam on to the affected area twice daily to encourage new growth and prevent future hair loss.

The Best Way to Clean .999% Pure Colloidal Silver Rods

The Best Way to Clean .999% Pure Colloidal Silver Rods

Colloidal silver is often used as a medicine for its antibacterial properties. However, impurities in colloidal silver can have negative effects. It is important to use clean, pure silver rods in order to avoid creating a toxic substance.

Keep your rods clean by wiping them off after each use. Wipe them with a paper towel; using a little distilled white vinegar with the towel is particularly effective.

Distilled white vinegar is safe and effective for cleaning silver rods. You can wrap your silver rods in a vinegar-soaked paper towel for a little while before making colloidal silver in order to remove tarnish or oils from your fingers.

Using a small scouring pad on a silver rod is also effective for cleaning. This method requires you to be careful so you do not remove more silver than is necessary, which wastes valuable silver.

How to Benefit from Cod Liver Oil Supplements for Your Health

How to Benefit from Cod Liver Oil Supplements for Your Health

Cod liver oil supplements are fish oil supplements that are derived from the liver of cod fish. In the early 20th century, cod liver oil was commonly administered to children on a daily basis to ward off colds and flu. Many children who grew up taking this tonic developed a dislike for cod liver oil, and the practice eventually disappeared in favor of administering multi-vitamins to children.

Increase your vitamin A intake. Cod is among the many fish that provide abundant levels of Vitamin A. Vitamin A is important in keeping skin healthy and moist.

Take cod liver oil supplements to prevent chest congestion. In addition to prevention of cold and flu, cod liver oil supplements can be given to help ease chest congestion.

Boost your omega 3 Fatty Acids intake. Another benefit of cod liver oil is that it provides the body with the omega 3 essential fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA help lower the risk of heart attacks in people with diabetes or a history of heart attacks.

Treat adult bone disease and disorders. In adults, vitamin D deficiency can lead to osteomalacia, which results in muscular weakness in addition to weak bones. oil supplements are widely taken to prevent osteomalacia as well as to ease the symptoms of arthritis.

Supplement your vitamin D levels. Cod liver oil also has high levels of vitamin D. It is widely taken to prevent rickets, which is a nutritional deficiency which results in skeletal deformities

Natural Alternative to Tapazole

Tapazole, generic name methimazole, is used to treat hyperthyroidism, usually caused by Grave's disease. Because Tapazole has many side effects, many people are searching for natural alternatives.

Gypsyweed and its American version bugleweed, as well as lemon balm and motherwort, may help lower thyroid levels and reduce symptoms. These herbs are usually taken as a tincture (an herbal extraction using alcohol).

Chinese Medicine

Chinese medicine uses natural herbs and plants to alleviate symptoms. This is best done by consulting a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner, because the mixes are highly individualized.

Vitamins and Minerals

As part of an overall plan, it is helpful to have a good balance of vitamins and minerals. Avoid iodine and increase your intake of B vitamins, calcium, magnesium and potassium.

L-carnitine is an amino acid that may help reduce symptoms of hyperthyroidism, such as fatigue, insomnia and racing pulse.

Stress Reduction

Meditation and exercise can reduce stress levels, which will help alleviate symptoms and strengthen your immune system (a big factor in almost all hyperthyroid patients). Yoga and Tai Chi are two very popular practices for reducing stress.

Threelac Candida Cure

Candidiasis is a yeast infection caused by an overgrowth of yeast inside the body. The condition can affect your stomach, skin, mouth, urinary tract, esophagus, digestive tract and vagina. Women and people with compromised immune systems are at the greatest risk for getting candida infections. Symptoms can include mouth sores, white patches on the tongue, rashes; skin blisters between your toes, fingers, and on the groin; and women may experience vaginal itching, irritation and white discharge. Probiotics are sometimes used to treat the condition.

In "The New Optimum Nutrition Bible," Patrick Holford explains that probiotics are good bacteria that the body needs in order to function properly. Probiotics are available in some foods, and they are also available as supplements. Probiotics are resistant to stomach acid and help to improve digestion, lower cholesterol, regulate hormones and build up your immune system. Probiotics are needed to treat infections, sore throats, candida infections, food poisoning, diarrhea, bladder infections and constipation. They also are excellent for alleviating symptoms associated with Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome and certain cancers. Holford explains that probiotics should be consumed after a course of antibiotics, because antibiotics tend to kill off good and bad bacteria in the body; probiotic consumption can restore the natural bacterial balances in your digestive tract and body.

Threelac Ingredients

Threelac is a probiotic product that contains three different probiotics: Bacillus coagulans, Bacillus subtilis and Enterococcus faecalis. Through the consumption of Threelac, you are reintroducing healthy micro-flora into your digestive tract to rebalance the bacteria in your system. Threelac is offered in packs that contain 1.5 billion live bacteria, which are consumed to promote the health of your intestines and to fend off Candida albicans overgrowth: the primary cause of candida.

Holford explains that Bacillus coagulans is resistant to stomach acid, can thrive in the stomach and intestines for seven days, and is a primary probiotic used in infection defense. This probiotic also helps to control gastrointestinal issues and to repair digestive conditions, lowers your cholesterol and boosts your immune system.

Bacillus subtilis is another probiotic that is a soil organism that fights off microorganisms that develop in the intestines. However, not everyone agrees on the helpfulness of Bacillus subtilis. In "Probiotics for Crohn's and Colitis," Peter Cartwright explains that Bacillus subtilis is an aerobe organism, meaning that it requires oxygen for its survival, and that while the organism is resistant to stomach acid, it cannot thrive in the intestinal tract.

Threelac also contains Enterococcus faecalis, a probiotic that is naturally present in your digestive tract. Cartwright explains that Enterococcus faecalis is a group of bacteria that include Lactobacillus, a lactic acid-producing bacteria. Cartwright argues that there have been no studies conducted on Enterococcus in regard to how well it works in treating irritable bowel disease, but Enterococcus faecalis is useful in treating diarrhea.

Threelac Use

Consume Threelac one to two times daily for candida defense. Consume Threelac by eating the mixture right out of the packet, or mix the ingredients in the packet with a cup of cold water. The packets can be consumed on an empty stomach or with a meal, and should be consumed for a period of 60 days. If you are consuming two packets a day, after 60 days, reduce to one packet per day to continue probiotic maintenance.

Inversion Table & Chair Basics

Inversion therapy involves the use of reverse gravity to help reduce pain and reverse some of the affects of aging. Inversion therapy utilizes specialized tables and chairs and can provide a number of health benefits.

The user lies down on the inversion table and, with the ankles secured, the table is then tilted so the body is at an angle with the head lower than the rest of the body. A chair can be inverted while in a seated position and may supply more comfort and support than a table.

According to the National Institutes of Health, the biggest benefit of inversion therapy is for sufferers of low back pain. A 1985 study published on the NIH's publication website,, found people who underwent inversion therapy, also called "gravity-facilitated traction," had an increase in the space between vertebrae which could lead to a reduction in back pain.

Inversion Duration

The 1985 study published on, which was originally published in the "Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy," found that subjects inverted for just 10 minutes experienced significant increases in intervertebral dimensions.

According to a 2007 article in the "Los Angeles Times," inversion therapy should not be used by people who are obese or people with high blood pressure, circulatory issues, glaucoma, or women who are pregnant.

As of 2010, inversion tables and chairs start as low as about $200 for a basic chair to over $1,200 for a motorized table.

Benefits of Roses

Benefits of Roses

Many people love to plant roses in their yards for their spectacular beauty and aroma. Few would question the popularity of the flower as a gift and space beautifier. Lovers have exchanged roses and used floriography, or language of flowers, for ages to send the right message. However, roses have other benefits as well.

Dietary Benefits

Rose hips form the seed pod of the rose plant. Rose hips are high in vitamin C, E, A, rutin and bioflavonoids, making them very healthy fare, according to Louise Tenney, master herbalist and author of "Today's Herbal Health." Some supplements include rose hips in the formulation process. You can cook the rose hip or eat it raw in salads or alone.

Pick the hips after the first frost. To prepare them for eating, wash the plant andtrim the blossom and stem ends off. Cut the pod in half and remove the seeds.

You can eat rose petals, too. They make a tasty addition to salads or brewed as tea. Spring Valley Roses also suggests using the petals to make a wine or jelly.

Medicinal Benefits

The rose hips and petals have been brewed into medicinal teas for hundreds of years. Father Kunsel, a Swiss herbalist, recommends rose hip tea to expel kidney stones, prevent infections, purify the blood and relieve colds. A rose infusion also can reduce fever, treat sore throats and diarrhea. Rose hip infusion can alleviate insomnia, depression and fatigue.

It takes about 2,000 pounds of rose petals to create 1 pound of rose oil. Manufacturers of essential oils use the damask rose, cabbage rose and Turkish Gallic rose to make essential oil The damask rose has the greatest therapeutic value. Used with a carrier oil, such as sesame or almond, rose oil has been used to reduce stress, alleviate depression and ease the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome and menopause when rubbed on the body.

Perfumes, soaps, massage oils and lotions may contain rose essential oils. Rose oil may also form the fragrance base for candles and other room fresheners. Essential rose oil is expensive, however, and some manufacturers prefer to use less expensively produced oils.

You can combine different kinds of rose petals and herbs to create your own rose potpourri. The Internet and craft books contain a variety of recipes for your use.

Flower Essences

Flower essences work on the emotional health of the user, bringing a gentle change and benefit. Flower essences also may change the physical health through work on the emotions.

Alternative Ovarian Cancer Treatment

Cancer in the ovaries starts with cell abnormalities, which lead to the growth of a tumor. Symptoms of ovarian cancer may include pain in the abdomen, pelvis and/or lower back, an increased urge to urinate, unexplained gas and chronic indigestion. According to the Mayo Clinic, women who are diagnosed during the early stages of ovarian cancer have a 94-percent survival rate over five years. Alternative and complementary treatments may provide symptom relief and boost the effectiveness of cancer-fighting drugs.

Flaxseed Oil

Proponents of flaxseed oil believe this substance has the ability to increase immune-system function and fight off cancer. Flaxseed is available in three forms: oil (available at health-food stores), grains and seed.

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), flaxseed oil may reduce the stickiness of cancer cells and thus prevent ovarian cancer from spreading. Flaxseed oil also may increase the effectiveness of tamoxifen, a drug used to treat cancer.

Licorice Root

Licorice is a plant that grows in regions of Asia, the Mediterranean and Europe. Chinese herbalists have been using licorice root for centuries to treat medical issues. According to the National Cancer Institute, licorice-root extract is a kind of antioxidant with anti-inflammatory benefits and---although still unproven---may cause cancer cells to die.

High-protein foods promote the repair of body tissue, according to the Mayo Clinic. Eggs, lean meats, freshwater fish, yogurt and beans are rich in protein and beneficial to most diets, but especially to the nutrition of a cancer patient.

It's common for those undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment to suffer appetite loss, so try eating frequent smaller meals to supplement nutrition and encourage tissue healing.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Consuming omega-3 fatty acids may prevent cancer growth and spread, according to the ACS. These minerals also can ward off heart disease and prevent dangerous blood clots.

Omega-3 fatty acids are contained in freshwater fresh, such as mackerel and salmon, and are available in supplement form.

Home Remedies for Dandruff & Bug Bites

Dandruff (seborrheic dermatitis) is characterized by dry, flaky skin on the scalp. Several natural treatments are available to treat and prevent flaking. Insect bites and stings can cause pain, itching, inflammation and sometimes allergic reactions; you can do several things to address theses issues naturally. You should always see a doctor if you suspect you are having an allergic reaction to a insect bite or sting.

Treating Bug Bites Naturally

If your bite is causing itching and irritation, you might want to use a topical treatment to ease the discomfort. Certain herbs, when applied topically, can be a good substitute for conventional treatments like hydrocortisone cream; they include lemon balm, stinging nettle, tea tree oil, witch hazel, calendula and plantain. Check with your doctor before using any natural treatments and discontinue use if you notice any negative reactions.

If you are looking for natural repellents, the following oils, when applied to the skin, might protect against bites; they include eucalyptus, clove, citronella and neem. Do not apply the oil directly to the skin without diluting it first with a carrier oil like almond, grape seed, sesame or another type of oil.

If you experience an allergic reaction to the bite or sting, certain natural supplements can ease the symptoms of the reaction. You should not attempt to treat an allergic reaction on your own; seek medical care. These treatments are complementary and are not appropriate on their own. Consult with an experienced practitioner to determine if these treatments are appropriate for you; she can offer guidance on proper use. Quercetin (400 to 500 mg daily) can ease the severity of allergic reactions. Vitamin C strengthens immunity and can reinforce the action of quercetin; the suggested dose is 1,000 mg two to six times daily. Zinc (30 mg daily) might ease the stomach problems that accompany allergic reactions.

The following homeopathic remedies might be of benefit as well; take as directed on the product label. They include apis mellifica, hypericum, ledum, staphysagria and urtica urens. Working with a professional homeopath is the best way to determine the most appropriate remedies for you.

Treating Dandruff Naturally

Use a tar shampoo every day or every other day until the flakes clear; afterward, use twice a week. You can also use a shampoo containing tea tree oil. They are appropriate for daily use.

The following supplements can retain moisture in your hair and reduce the formation of flakes; they include evening primrose oil (500 mg twice a day), black currant oil (500 mg twice a day) and omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish oil (1.8 g daily of daily).

If your dandruff is linked to eczema, you can do several things to reduce the incidence of flare-ups. Eat an anti-inflammatory diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans. Limit your intake of inflammation causing foods like saturated fats found in animal products, fried foods, white flour foods and sugar. Consider getting tested for food allergies and sensitivities to be sure you are not eating foods that are interfering with proper immune function and worsening your condition. Manage stress by practicing relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation. The above supplements are also beneficial for eczema as they also have anti-inflammatory properties.

Foods That Are Natural Diuretics

People use diuretics to get rid of fluid that has temporarily built up in the body. The temporary fluid retention can be related to eating excessive amounts of sodium, taking certain medications or suffering from health conditions like diabetes and PMS. Diuretics can be purchased over the counter or by prescription, and many people have adverse side effects from these pharmaceuticals. However, certain foods act as natural diuretics and release excess fluid from the body.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture states that asparagus naturally detoxifies the body because the fiber in this vegetable cleans out the gastrointestinal tract and helps the body release excess fluid.

Registered dietitian Dr. Lauren Braun states that the natural juice in watermelon is the primary reason it acts as a diuretic. The fluid in watermelon stimulates urine production.

A study published by the National Center for Biotechnology and the National Institutes of Health states that parsley acts as a natural diuretic by inhibiting the production of sodium and increasing the flow of fluids in the body (see Resources).

Dandelions act as natural diuretics because they contain inulin, an indigestible substance found in many plants. Because inulin cannot be digested, it naturally improves the body's ability to eliminate waste.

The Weight Loss Guide states that chocolate acts as a natural diuretic because it contains lecithin. Lecithin improves blood circulations and restricts cholesterol buildup on arterial walls, leading to less fluid retention.

Coffee and Tea

Coffee and other caffeinated substance work as natural diuretics because caffeine stimulates the system, leading to the excretion of excess fluid from the body.

How to Use Home Remedies to Treat Blisters

Blisters can come from a sunburn, tight shoes rubbing up against your skin, bug bites that you scratch too much, and someone or something pinching you too hard. Blisters hurt, itch and are very irritating. They are tender spots that fill up with fluid and burst very easily. There are many ways to relieve the pain and itch from blisters, including natural, cheap home remedies. Read on to learn more about how to use home remedies to treat blisters.

Take a bandage and prop it like a tent. Place the tented bandage on the blisters. By doing this you will have them covered and allow blisters to breath or air out. Blisters and cuts heal better when they are exposed to the air. You dont want blisters exposed to the air all the time though because you dont want to risk infection.

Use a double duty bandage. You can buy these types of bandages at your local drug store that have an antiseptic in them. This not only cushions the blisters but also cleans them.

Apply a cool, wet washcloth to the blisters. You can also soak the blisters in a bathtub. This will help ease the itching. You want to do everything you can to ease the itching because scratching the blisters will only hurt more.

Hold an oatmeal soaked washcloth on the blisters for at least 15 minutes. You can also take an oatmeal bath and soak the blisters in it. You can buy an oatmeal powder or make your own oatmeal solution. To make your own oatmeal solution wrap one cup of oatmeal in a cloth and boil until it is soft. You can use the oatmeal soaked cloth as a sponge while bathing. If you use the oatmeal soaked cloth as a sponge you do not want to use soap with it.

Make a paste of baking soda by mixing it with water. Add more or less for your desired paste. Apply the baking soda paste to the blisters and let it sit. Your best bet would be to leave the baking soda paste on the blisters overnight.

Drain the blisters. Some doctors will say not to drain because of risk of infection but some doctors also say that if there is a lot of pressure on the blisters and depending on location, it is a good idea to drain. If blisters are on a finger, toe or under a nail then go ahead and drain. Make sure you to wipe the blisters and a sewing needle with alcohol before using it to pop the blisters. Prick the blisters a couple of times near the edge and then slowly and gently press out the fluid.

Mix a tbsp. of salt in 1 quart of water. Wet a cloth with the salt water solution and apply it to the blisters.

How to Remove Tick Heads Embedded in the Skin

Ticks latch onto your skin and suck your blood. Ticks can pass on Lyme disease, which can cause nerve damage or paralysis. There are many methods for removing ticks, most of which aren't recommended. Applying petroleum jelly, fingernail polish or matches to help remove a tick are well-known methods, but they aren't particularly effective and actually can have adverse effects. In addition, these methods can cause the tick to inject germs into your skin.

Clean the area of the skin around the tick with a alcohol wipe or cotton ball soaked with rubbing alcohol.

Pull the tick as close to the skin as possible with tweezers or your fingertips covered by a tissue or cloth or rubber gloves.

Pull the tick until it lets go. Don't twist or jerk the tick. This could cause the head or mouth parts to break off of the tick and remain in the skin. If just removing a tick body part, like the head, pull the head until it is removed from the skin.

Flush the tick down the toilet. Don't squeeze or smash the tick because it will spread the tick's germs.

Clean the area of the skin where the tick was implanted with a cotton ball and rubbing alcohol, or an alcohol wipe.

Uses of Squalene

Uses of Squalene

Squalene is an organic substance found in animals, plants and humans. The oil form of squalene is commonly extracted from fish oil, specifically shark liver oil, to be used in health supplements, cosmetics, foods and non-prescription medications. Squalene oil is rich in alkyglycerols, chemical compounds found in human bone marrow, and breast milk which may possess cancer-fighting properties.

Cancer Treatment

The American Cancer Society notes squalene oil has been shown to slow the growth of cancerous tumor blood vessels, suggesting it may help treat cancer as a standalone product or in conjunction with chemotherapy. The substance may reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatment due to its ability to shield cell membranes. Research indicates squalene can protect normal bone marrow cells from the negative side effects of various chemotherapy treatments, while letting the drugs continue to affect cancer cells. Although squalene oil has been purported to possess cancer-fighting potential, more data from clinical trials is needed to verify these claims.

Heart Health

The oil has been used to treat conditions related to the heart and blood system, lowering triglyceride levels and blood pressure. Squalene oil has been linked to preventing heart disease and stroke, according to a Medline plus study. Taking excessive doses of squalene carries risks such as increased bleeding, and can actually elevate the risk of stroke.

The liquid form of squalene forms an emulsion used in vaccines to enhance the response of the immune system. According to the World Health Organization, the influenza vaccine FLUAD, which possesses 10 grams of squalene per dose, is approved in multiple European countries. The substance is being used in experimental vaccines which help treat malaria and the pandemic flu.

Squalene has been linked to digestive problems like diarrhea, upset stomach and nausea. The oil also raised blood cholesterol levels in animal studies and might possess harmful polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, which can increase the risk of some types of cancer in humans. If you have seafood allergies, avoid taking shark liver oil, as it might cause discomfort.

Home Remedy Treatments for a Brown Recluse Bite

The brown recluse spider is found in the southeastern region of the United States. It is less dangerous than the black widow but still will leave large wounds over the bitten area of the skin. These spiders do not deliberately seek out human skin to bite. They will bite only if they are trapped or if they are pressed against the skin. If you are concerned about a bite, seek immediate medical attention.

Antiseptic and Asprin

Asprin rubbed into a bite may reduce the poison under the skin.

Bach Walnut Flower Remedies

Developed by Dr. Edward Bach in the 1930s, flower essences are natural treatments for overcoming emotional troubles, which can, in turn, lead to physical healing. Bach walnut flower essence targets feelings of regret and inertia.

Dr. Bach

Believing that a negative state of mind is the underlying cause of illness, Bach set out to find a way to heal the emotions through natural means. The 38 essences that he developed are said to "cover all aspects of human nature" and the rainbow of human emotions. "Health depends on being in harmony with our souls," he said.

Flower Remedies

Bach flower remedies are steam-distilled plant extracts sold in small glass bottles that include a medicine dropper. Instructions call for the user to hold a few drops underneath the tongue, four times a day. Users can also add a few drops to a glass of water and sip periodically. Good for up to five years, Bach flower remedies are available in many health food stores and herbal shops.

Walnut Flower Remedy

According to the guide "The 38 Bach Flower Essences," taking walnut flower remedy is useful when facing major life changes. For those who have recently gone through divorce or separation, walnut flower remedy is said to help mend feelings of sadness and regret. Also recommended for those who have changed jobs or homes, Bach walnut flower remedy may be useful in breaking away emotionally from old ties and restrictions. It is also meant for those who are breaking free from some type of addiction.

Chronic Fatigue Home Remedies

Chronic fatigue syndrome is a different condition to diagnose and treat for many people. The symptoms of the condition are an overwhelming feeling of fatigue that does not remedy with sleep and rest. Home remedies are usually a complimentary treatment, but for this condition, they may be the only relief.

Managing Fatigue

Chronic fatigue patients begin to recognize the times of day when they feel their most energetic. Traditional medicine offers very little to increase this energy to other times of day when it may be needed. Stress may be a factor in chronic fatigue and not having enough energy during the day only adds to the stress.

Manage your time so that you accomplish your tasks when you have the energy. Struggling to get your housework done when your energy is at its lowest is not an effective way to manage your condition. Keep track of when you feel most energetic and plan your activities during this time.
Managing your schedule around energy levels may also help relieve some of the stress that you are feeling. In addition to managing your time better, you should seek stress-relieving treatments as well such as meditation and relaxation techniques.

Your diet may play an important part in the way that you feel with chronic fatigue. A balanced diet that avoids refined sugars and foods that cause glucose levels to spike may help with the condition. Stay away from sugary snacks and refined carbohydrates.

Plan to eat smaller meals frequently through the day to keep glucose levels under control. Four to six smaller meals instead of three large ones will keep your nutrition on an even keel. Choose whole grains and raw vegetables for plenty of fiber in the diet. This helps to avoid constipation, which can sap energy and cause you to feel sluggish.

Immune Enhancing Herbs

Boost your immune system to battle chronic fatigue syndrome. Herbal treatments provide the immune system a lift and boost energy through increased circulation as well. Echinacea is an herb that you can find in tincture or supplement form. This herb also helps to ward off infection.

Add a ginseng supplement to improve energy and support your immune system. Do not start with the recommended dosage on the label at first. Start with a half of a dose and work your way up to the full dosage recommendations. This is a powerful stimulant and can be affected by caffeine and stimulant medications that you may be taking.

Always discuss the use of herbs with your doctor before beginning an herbal treatment plan. Herbs may interact with other medications and cause adverse reactions.

What is a Fast Cold Sore Remedy?

Home Remedy for Welder Burn to the Eyes

Home Remedy for Welder Burn to the Eyes

If youve been exposed to bright ultraviolet light, you might experience the symptoms of a flash burn, or welders flash. If you have eye pain, bloodshot eyes, watery eyes, light sensitivity, the feeling of having something in your eye or even blurred vision, consider trying some basic home remedies for relief. Its also important to know when to call your doctor so that you can prevent or treat an infection.

Home Remedies

Though a flash burn usually will heal itself in one or two days, its also important to treat it to avoid an infection. Consider covering your eyes with a padded dressing to help them rest.

Dilating drops might also relax your eye muscles and ease pain. When you use dilating drops, expect your pupils to look bigger than they normally do. Effects from these drops usually last a few hours.

If youre experiencing itching with your flash burn, the Doctors Book of Home Remedies suggests using a cold compress. To make a cold compress, wet a washcloth or towel and place it on your eyes whenever they start to itch or feel irritated. Use the cold compress for two to 20 minutes, depending on the severity of the itch.

Use artificial tears to help flush out any foreign objects. These drops may also soothe and remoisten your affected eyes. If you normally wear contact lenses, take them out and keep them out until your eyes are completely healed.

The Better Health Channel also recommends taking pain medication for relief. The pain associated with flash burn could last about a day, so consider taking paracetamol or codeine. Ask your doctor if either of these medications is appropriate for your situation.

When to See a Doctor

Because flash burns can sometimes result in an infection, see your doctor if you experience vision changes, blurred vision, worsening pain, pain when you move your eyes or if you see spots or flashes of light.

If your flash burn results in an infection, your doctor might prescribe antibiotic drops or ointment. Your doctor might also recommend a steroid anti-inflammatory eye drop. To apply ointments, smear a small amount of the cream along the inside of your lower eyelid. Dont touch the applicators nozzle to your eye directly. If your doctor prescribes eye drops, apply them behind your lower eyelid as well.

Uses of Swedish Bitters

Uses of Swedish Bitters

Swedish Bitters have a long history as an herbal remedy for an exhaustive list of conditions. It is easy to make at home and increases in potency for as long as it is stored. The complex list of herbs is activated by the interaction with the alcohol to create the all-natural elixir.

Use a clean cloth to apply a small amount of the bitter to the wound area. Keep the wound area moist and change the cloth frequently. This speeds up the healing process and helps close wounds. The same application method helps heal bruises under the skin. If you are treating scars, including very old scars, heavily moisten the area and keep it moistened. Once you have repeated this process for up to 40 times, you should see a noticeable decrease in the size and severity of the wound or scar. Swedish Bitters act as a powerful disinfectant, cleaning the wound while activating the herbs to sooth the skin and accelerate healing.

Apply a few drops to the blemished area three to five times a day. Pimples will disappear quickly while more severe blemishes, such as boils, will be gone in a few days. The high alcohol count helps dry out the affected area and kills any present infection.

When applied to a burn, Swedish Bitters will clean the affected area, remove remaining toxins and decrease pain in the area. The natural herbs will speed the healing process and, if applied regularly, will decrease the severity of remaining scars after the wound heals. For best results, apply immediately upon receiving the burn.

Combine a tbsp. of Bitters to water and place in your mouth. Swish around the substance, concentrating on the area with the painful tooth. This will help kill any infections in the area while cleaning the tooth and alleviating the pain. The pain should decrease immediately. Repeat this process every time the pain returns. This also works on painful blisters inside your mouth.

Drink one tbsp. once or twice a day. This has multiple effects on your digestion such as eliminating stomach cramps, acid indigestion and gas or bloating. Ulcers or any wounds in your stomach or intestines will begin to heal.

Just before bedtime, taking one to two tbsp. will help you go to sleep and ensure a more comfortable sleep. The Swedish Bitters will decrease the number of times you wake up throughout the night.

Egg Yolk Acne Cure

Egg yolks contain Vitamin A and other compounds that theoretically have value in treating acne, but the evidence is anecdotal, not clinically tested.

Why egg yolks might help treat acne.

Egg yolks are rich in Vitamin A, known as a retinoid in its many different forms. One of these retinoids, all-trans-retinoic acid, also known as Retin-A, is used in regulating the production and shedding of skin cells. Retin-A helps keep pores from clogging up and so is good for acne. Another retinoid is 13-cis-retinol, also known as Accutane, that regulates the production of skin cells, inhibits the production of oil. Accutane also inhibits the bacteria that causes acne.

Both13-cis-retinol and Accutane are common ingredients in commercial ointments sold to treat acne. Egg yolks contain 13-cis-retinol and Accutane.

Why the egg yolks might not cure acne

Acne is caused by clogged pores beneath the epidermis, or outer layer of the skin, so applying a face mask of egg yolk or any other mask or ointment is likely of limited value. However being rich in vitamin A, egg yolk is theoretically helpful in the prevention of scarring.

How egg yolk is acne

Apply raw egg yolk to your face. Let it dry. Wait 10 minutes. Wash it off. Do this every day for a month. Some who suffered from acne swear by this treatment. Others say it doesn't appear to work.

How to Use Oregano Oil

When grown in the Mediterranean mountains and used in its purest form, oregano can fight off many different kinds of infections. The oregano essential oil is derived from fresh oregano leaves and is commonly extracted through steam distillation. Oregano oil can be taken internally with oregano capsules or oil under the tongue and used externally as a topical treatment. According to Dr. Cass Ingram who wrote the book "The Cure is in the Cupboard," wild oregano is one of nature's most versatile essential oils. It can be used to fight fungus and yeast infections as well as treat allergies, hay fever, cold and flu symptoms.

Dilute 100 percent pure oil of oregano with extra virgin olive oil. You can do this by mixing one drop of oregano oil with one drop of extra virgin olive oil.

Sterilize an old eye dropper bottle or other container ahead of time. Pour the diluted oil or oregano into a sterile container with a dropper on the top for easy use.

Drop one to two drops of the diluted oil under the tongue for the first dosage. The mixture should be placed under the tongue and held there for a few minutes then wash it down with 2 to 3 oz of water. Drink the water and gargle it with the oregano oil for 1 to 2 minutes then swallow and wash it down with the rest of the water in the cup. This should be done once or twice a day.

Try oregano in vapor form to help fight off sinus infections and clear throat and nasal passages. Use the pure oil of oregano with boiling water to create a vapor that can be inhaled. Mix 1/2 cup of boiling water with 2 to 3 drops of oil of oregano then cover your head and the cup with a towel to trap in the steam vapors and breathe deeply.

Use oil of oregano externally by rubbing it on the affected area. It can be used to treat some skin problems like acne. Apply diluted or pure oil of oregano to the infected skin once daily. It will sting the area and leave a red spot, but the stinging should go away after about 10 minutes.

Use oregano oil to help treat dandruff by combining the oil of oregano with your shampoo. Use 10 to 20 drops of oil of oregano with about 8 oz of shampoo and mix well. Then shampoo your hair as usual. Leave the shampoo on your head for a couple of minutes then rinse. Avoid contact with eyes.

Apply oregano oil to the skin in order to treat warts and boils. You can do this by saturating the area with oil of oregano then covering it with a bandage. The wart or boil should be treated daily until it is gone. The treatment period is generally about 1 to 2 weeks.

Paraffin Wax Treatment for Carpal Tunnel

Paraffin Wax Treatment for Carpal Tunnel

Carpal tunnel syndrome can involve pain, tingling, weakness, and/or numbness in the wrist and potentially down to the fingers and up the forearm to the elbow. It is caused by compression of the median nerve, which connects your forearm and hand, and the position of your hands and wrists when you work is the most frequent contributing factor. The most common treatment is a combination of rest, a wrist brace, anti-inflammatories, and pain relievers. Some patients find additional relief with contrast baths, one type of which is a paraffin bath.

Contrast Baths Using Water

Because there is a need to reduce inflammation and increase circulation when recovering from carpal tunnel syndrome, many people, including physical therapists, recommend contrast baths. The general protocol is to immerse the affected wrists in hot water for 2 to 3 minutes, then in ice water for 1 minute. Contrast baths are usually performed 2 or 3 times per day. The warm water helps increase circulation to speed healing, and the cold water helps reduce inflammation.

Paraffin Baths

Paraffin baths, originally used in spas for softening hands, can also provide some relief from carpal tunnel syndrome. You can buy inexpensive units that will automatically keep the wax at the proper temperature, or you can use a crock pot and a candy thermometer, making sure the wax never gets hotter than 125 Fahrenheit (51 Celsius) to prevent burns. In this type of contrast bath, the wax takes too long to remove to do an adequate cold bath afterward, but it provides a longer and more uniform heating of the hands and wrists to promote more circulation and faster healing.

Make sure there are no open wounds on your hands and wrists and take off all jewelry. You may also want to moisturize your hands before immersing them in the hot wax. Briefly dip your hands and wrists in the melted paraffin 2 to 8 times to develop a layer of wax. Be careful not to touch the sides of the bath, and keep your hands relatively still when dipping or cracks in the wax could cause unpleasant hot spots. To prevent a mess from dripping wax and retain the heat longer, wrap your hand(s) in plastic or towels. Wait at least 10 minutes before peeling off the hardened wax. Most people can safely use the paraffin bath twice a day while their carpal tunnel symptoms persist.
