Soy supplementation has long been used to treat the symptoms of menopause. TENS Machine Information

A TENS machine administers alternative therapy referred to as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. TENS involves the use of low voltage electrical currents or impulses. The premise is that this affects your body's own electromagnetic energy fields. The impulses are administered through electrodes attached to the skin of the body where pain is experienced. Supporters claim TENS has many uses for healing, but the effectiveness of TENS machines remains largely unproven within the medical community.

How Does it Work

    A patient can visit an alternative medicine practitioner or a physical therapist, or purchase a TENS machine for use at home, with a prescription. There are over 100 FDA-approved TENS machines available for home purchase. In any of these situations, the first step involves hooking electrodes to the patient's skin close to the source where the patient is experiencing pain. The electrodes are attached to the TENS machine, which is an electrical powered unit, by wires. The machine is turned on, and electrical current travels from the wire to the electrodes to the body. The patient may feel a sensation of tingling or warmth. The machine may be used for between 5 and 15 minutes, and can be be used as often as necessary.

History

    According to the American Cancer Society, the theory behind the TENS machine was developed by Dr. Ronald Melzac and Dr. Patrick Wall in 1965. Melzac and Wall believed that the electronic stimulation of nerves caused a reaction in the spinal cord, which blocked the body from experiencing pain. This idea formed the basis for the TENS machine, which became a commonly used form of therapy in the 1970s.

Suggested Uses

    According to the American Cancer Society, supporters of TENS machines believe that they are useful for managing pain associated with a number of conditions including surgery, childbirth, migraines, sports injuries, arthritis, tendinitis, cancer and other serious illnesses. The American Cancer Society states that, although many practitioners believe Tens can cure pain, few believe the therapy actually cures the underlying causes of the pain. Instead, the pain-relieving properties are thought to be associated with stimulating the production of natural pain killers within the body, called endorphines.

Medical Evidence

    The American Cancer Society suggests that the use of the TENS machine may be useful at short-term pain relief, but that there is little conclusive evidence demonstrating its effectiveness at relieving long-term pain. The ACS site's small clinical studies that have demonstrated that patients experiencing mild nerve damage pain may experience pain relief form the use of the TENS machine. Additional studies are cited by the American Cancer Society, some of which suggest the TENS machine has been useful in pain management while others have demonstrated that it did not relieve pain associated with surgery, or childbirth, and that TENS was not as effective as other alternative treatments at managing lower back pain.

Risks & Side Effectss

    There are few side effects associated with a TENS machine, when used properly. However, if the electrical currents are too intense and/or the TENS machine is used correctly, surface burns can appear on the skin. Those who are pregnant or have heart problems should not use TENS. Finally, electrodes should not be attached directly over the heart, on the brain, over the eyes, or on the front of the throat.

Purpose of Sweet Oil

A sweet oil is defined as any liquid edible oil derived from a plant. However, it most commonly consists of olive oil. It is used frequently as an ingredient in home remedies.

Sunburn

    Sweet oil can have a soothing effect on sunburned skin and lips. Cool some oil in the refrigerator and apply to the burned areas liberally to relieve stinging and burning.

Ear Infection

    To alleviate an ear infection, heat the oil first. Using a dropper, administer three to five drops into the ear and cover with a cotton ball. The heated oil helps the ear canals relax and drain naturally.

Skin Moisturizer

    Sweet oil is an emollient that can help moisturize your skin. Apply to the skin after showering to help your body retain it's natural moisture.

Hair Treatment

Home Remedy for Heat Bumps

In summer, the temperature rises, and simple activities like running, jogging, and some sports can lead to heat rashes and heat bumps on your back, chest, under the arms, and the legs---typically the upper thighs. These can look like bug bites, but it's merely your skin's reaction to heat and chafing, and a home remedy for heat bumps can deal with it.

Cool it Off

    A simple ice pack can often do the trick as a home remedy for heat bumps. Put a few cubes in a plastic bag, seal it to prevent leakage, and then wrap a cloth around it. Place it on the heat bumps for between 5 to 10 minutes and then remove. Repeat it at four to six hour intervals until the redness fades. You can also cool off by just using a plain old cold shower or bath. Afterward, rather than using a towel to get dry, allow yourself to air dry, this will cut down on irritation to your skin.

Use Some Powders

    There's baking soda, cornstarch and oatmeal; all three can help---in different ways---as a home remedy for heat bumps. Apply either baking soda or cornstarch to your skin after a cold shower or bath. They absorb the excess water on your skin that exacerbates the heat bumps. Baking soda and oatmeal can help give you relief in a warm bath. In fact, an oatmeal bath is used to treat chicken pox. Sprinkle two tablespoons to the bath water, stir until it's dissolved, and then soak in the water.

Lotions

    Aloe vera is an ideal home remedy for heat bumps and rashes. Aloe helps to relieve swelling and itching of irritated skin, and it is beneficial for cooling and soothing the skin. Simply squeeze it from a cut leaf and apply to the affected area two to three times daily. Over time, this will heal the skin. Do not use commercial lotions; they are full of chemicals that can clog your pores and lead to still more heat bumps and rashes.

Avoid Chaffing

    Wearing tight clothes during physical activity is often the first step in developing heat bumps or rash. Not only do such clothes rub your skin, but they hold in moisture, both of which are factors in causing the rash. To avoid both problems, wear clothes that are lightweight and loose-fitting. The reduction in chafing and allowing your sweat to evaporate will ease any heat bumps you have, and allow them to naturally diminish.

Fungal Ear Infections & Cures

All you know is you have a painful earache that refuses to go away. It keeps you up at night and may even affect your ability to hear. You may have a fungal ear infection. Knowing when to go to the doctor is important so that you get the right diagnosis and get past the pain and inconvenience of an unrelenting earache.

Bacterial or Fungal?

    Ear infections can be bacterial or fungal and the difference is crucial in understanding the healing process. A bacterial infection is treated with an antibiotic, and if all goes well it clears right up. However, if a misdiagnosis is made, a fungus will thrive on an antibiotic. Think about times when you may have been on an antibiotic and suddenly you also get a yeast infection--it's the same imbalance as when an antibiotic kills one type of bacteria while feeding another.

    If you are prone to ear infections of either kind, you should consider purchasing ear putty or swimmer's ear plugs to use when you are swimming, showering or washing your hair. Keeping the inner ear dry at all times leaves no place for fungus to grow, as it likes moist warm areas.

    As an added preventative measure, take a probiotic daily to keep your immune system strong. These are available at natural food and health food stores. Eat plenty of raw foods that include vitamin C, keep hydrated and get sufficient rest to help rebuild and restore your immune system.

Alternative Melanoma Treatments

Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer and occurs equally in men and women. This cancer develops in the cells that manufacture melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. It can lay dormant for as many as 50 years after the sunburn that triggered it. Herbal treatments for this condition should be used in conjunction with standard cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation and immunotherapy. Always be sure to let your doctor know if you are taking any sort of supplements.

Herbal Treatments

    Astragalus increases effectiveness of IL-2, a common immunotherapy treatment that mimics our body's own IL-2 cells, that is used in melanoma cases. It also increases production of natural killer cells, which destroy cells with damaged DNA. Take 1,000 milligrams three times a day. Cat's claw tincture also stimulates production of natural killer cells. Take as directed on the label in cup of water with 1 teaspoon of lemon juice. Kudzu contains daidzen, which halts the growth of certain types of melanoma. Take 10 milligrams three times daily. Soy isoflavone concentrate also contains this substance and gives the same benefit. Take 3,000 milligrams daily. You may choose one or the other and do not need to take both. Lentinan can slow the invasion of melanoma to cells in other parts of the body. This is taken in powder form and should be used in a dosage given by a healthcare provider. Polysaccharide kureha (PSK) slows the spread of melanoma to the lungs. Take 6,000 milligrams daily. Reishi increases the body's production of IL-2. Take 3,000 milligrams daily. Siberian ginseng is helpful for forms of cancer that are responding to immunotherapy, a common treatment in melanoma. Take pure eleuthero extract as directed on the label with 1/4 cup of water.

    Do not use astragalus if you have an infection or fever. Avoid cat's claw if you are taking insulin for diabetes. Soy isoflavone concentrate can cause upset stomach. If this occurs, stop using and take kudzu instead.

Other Suggestions

    Avoid getting sunburn but still get regular sun exposure. It is necessary to produce vitamin D, which helps melanoma cells return to a regular growth and reproduction cycle. Aim for at least 20 minutes a day in the early morning or late afternoon. Eat a lot of orange and yellow fruits and vegetables as well as green leafy vegetables. They contain vitamin A, which complements vitamin D. A study published in the December 1996 Journal of the American Medical Association found that selenium reduced the spread of melanoma cells. Take 150 milligrams daily.

    Use small plastic or glass jars with lids to store the cream. These jars can be found at craft stores or they can be purchased in large quantities through bottle suppliers. You can use recycled jars by sterilizing them in the dishwasher or by hand, using hot water and mild soap. Rinse thoroughly and air-dry before filling with homemade antibiotic cream. Make only small amounts of the homemade antibiotic cream and use it within several weeks or a month, to avoid the vegetable oil from becoming rancid.
