Soy & Menopause

Soy supplementation has long been used to treat the symptoms of menopause. Like herbs, soy can be used safely instead of hormone replacement therapy offering many of the same benefits with fewer side effects. Soy may also provide a suitable augment to traditional hormone therapy, if you are happy with the hormone therapy you are currently receiving. Adding soy to the diet may also enable you to decrease the amounts of hormones you take to manage menopause.

Predominant medical information concludes that soy protein, when used regularly in the diet, has the ability to lessen not only the frequency but the intensity of hot flashes along with other troublesome menopausal symptoms. Soy appears to benefit many of the systems in the body, and can improve the look and feel of the skin, hair and nails. Soy contains something called phytoestrogens which have the potential to act as estrogen in the body.

Many women report that consuming large doses of soy protein may help to restore vaginal moisture to pre-menopause levels. A large dose of soy protein would be considered between 100 to 160 mg of soy isoflavones per day. Soy also helps with mood swings, PMS symptoms, migraine headaches associated with menopause, irregular periods and weight gain. Soy protein may also decrease body fat and increase lean muscle tissue in menopausal women.

In order to fully benefit from the effects of soy protein during menopause, it is imperative to consume enough to have a beneficial benefit. One serving of a typical soy food contains about 20 g of protein and 30 mg of soy isoflavones. Isoflavones are plant compounds with estrogenic qualities. Some soy supplements may be even more concentrated. The minimum amount of soy required to receive any kind of effect is 40 to 60 g. of soy per day. With this level of consumption, it will take about four to six weeks for the full effect to be noticed.

Picking the right soy foods can go a long way to incorporating soy into your diet with ease. The following foods contain about 35 to 50 mg. of isoflavones: 1 cup of soy milk, 1/2 cup of tofu, 1/2 cup of tempeh, 1/2 cup of edamame or soybeans or about 3 handfuls of roasted soy nuts. Soy is also available in powdered form and can be added to milk, water or juice. Gradually add soy to your diet to limit unpleasant symptoms such as gas and bloating.

When adding soy to your diet to treat symptoms of menopause, you can expect relief within a few weeks. Depending on the amount you take, the results may be even faster. The average Japanese woman consumes about four to six servings of soy per day, and typically experiences far fewer hot flashes and severe symptoms of menopause.

There is conflicting evidence as to whether consuming large amounts of soy may increase the risk for breast cancer. As with any therapy, the patient must weigh the benefits and risks, and discuss the appropriate treatment plan with her physician to determine the best course of action.

How to Treat Acid Reflux (GERD) Symptoms with Natural Remedies

If you suffer from acid reflux or GERD, you probably don't get much relief from over the counter medication, and prescription medications are expensive and have side effects. Here are a few ways you can treat your acid reflux naturally.

Drink aloe vera juice. You can either buy it prepared at a health food store or prepare it yourself. Aloe is known to cure and heal a variety of ailments, and a lot of people who once suffered from acid reflux swear by aloe vera.

Eat almonds. Some people say that eating a handful of almonds each day helps their GERD symptoms.

Take probiotics. Acidophilus, taken in capsule form or in prepared yogurts, reestablishes the correct pH of the digestive tract. Because some cases of acid reflux is caused by an overpopulation of "bad" bacteria and a diminished population of "good" bacteria, aciddophilus helps a great many patients.

The most popular and successful home remedy for acid reflux seems contrary to common sense. Drinking one teaspoon of organic, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar (with the mother in it) is said to cure acid reflux from a mild case of heart burn to severe, chronic cases of GERD.

Neem Juice Benefits

Neem Juice Benefits

Neem juice, derived from the neem plant, has been used in ayurvedic medicine for centuries. The bitter juice is still in use in modern times--especially in India--for a variety of uses ranging from soothing the skin to cleaning teeth. While neem juice--a relatively cheap product--has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration, there are no known side effects of neem juice, so many people use it as a home remedy.

Benefits for the Eyes

Ayurvedic practitioners consider neem juice beneficial to eyesight. For people with night blindness, a common treatment is the application of a couple of drops of neem juice at nighttime. Neem juice is also said to benefit those with conjunctivitis when dropped directly into the eyes.

Dermatological Uses

Neem juice is often used for eczema and other skin conditions. Diseases like chicken pox and smallpox are also believed to be affected by neem juice. Dermatologists also recommend neem juice for acne patients, due to its anti-inflammatory, soothing qualities. In India, neem juice is also used as a common remedy for lice.

Benefits for the Ears

Neem juice can be warmed and applied to the ear to reduce hearing problems, practitioners say. If you have a bug in your ear, you can drop a few drops of neem juice in your ear to kill the bug. If you develop boils in your ears, a mixture of honey and neem juice--taken orally--is said to cure them.

Treatment of Fevers and Malaria

Neem juice is even used to treat malaria, a tropical fever that is very prevalent in India. Neem juice is said to inhibit the development of the virus and to help stimulate the liver.

Used as Contraception

Neem juice is also viewed as an inexpensive form of birth control. In monkeys, neem juice is said to lower fertility without lowering the libido. Neem can be used before or after intercourse and has not been shown to cause permanent infertility or damage to the reproductive organs.

Benefits to Pregnant Women

Some pregnant women use neem juice to reduce labor pains and fevers associated with labor. After pregnancy, neem juice--when applied as a douche--is said to relieve the pain of external wounds to the vaginal area.

How to Massage the Legs

How to Massage the Legs

Massaging the legs helps release knots in the muscle and sends more oxygen to the muscles for healing. A deep-tissue massage works really well for a focused massage on specific areas of the body. Learn to massage the legs by practicing these techniques on others.

Have the client lie flat and relax. Deep tissue massage is a way to rid the body of toxins built up from food and lack of exercise or overexertion of the muscles. Relaxing allows the person getting the massage the most benefit.

Use the forearm to apply pressure to the calf muscle first. Push the forearm along the leg in as smooth a motion as possible, using your non-massaging hand to hold your wrist for added pressure.

Put intense pressure on specific spots. Use the thumbs together to reduce the knots in specific parts of the leg. Press the thumbs firmly into any questionable spot on the person's leg.

Work until the knots or tissue seems to relax. Continue massaging the leg as long as the recipient is comfortable.

How to Kill Head Lice Without Using Chemicals

How to Kill Head Lice Without Using Chemicals

When you or your kids get lice, you'll want to get rid of it as soon as possible. Lice can spread easily and your children will not be allowed to return to school until you have killed the infestation. Use these methods to get rid of lice naturally without using chemicals.

Purchase a jar of mayonnaise. The brand name doesn't matter, but you do want to get enough to treat all parties in your household. Keep the mayo out of the fridge.

Put a generous amount of mayonnaise on all parts of the hair. Be sure to get it behind the ears and on the back of the neck during treatment.

Place a shower cap over the hair after you have applied the mayonnaise. The shower cap keeps the mayo from dripping off.

Leave the mayonnaise on your hair for an 1 1/2 to 2 hours. During this time, the mayonnaise smothers the lice. After a couple hours, rinse the mayo out of the hair. Shampoo the hair and then rinse again.

Use a nit comb to go through the hair. To get all of the eggs and remaining lice out of the hair, you need to comb each strand of hair with a nit comb. You can find these combs at any pharmacy.

TENS Machine Information

A TENS machine administers alternative therapy referred to as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. TENS involves the use of low voltage electrical currents or impulses. The premise is that this affects your body's own electromagnetic energy fields. The impulses are administered through electrodes attached to the skin of the body where pain is experienced. Supporters claim TENS has many uses for healing, but the effectiveness of TENS machines remains largely unproven within the medical community.

How Does it Work

A patient can visit an alternative medicine practitioner or a physical therapist, or purchase a TENS machine for use at home, with a prescription. There are over 100 FDA-approved TENS machines available for home purchase. In any of these situations, the first step involves hooking electrodes to the patient's skin close to the source where the patient is experiencing pain. The electrodes are attached to the TENS machine, which is an electrical powered unit, by wires. The machine is turned on, and electrical current travels from the wire to the electrodes to the body. The patient may feel a sensation of tingling or warmth. The machine may be used for between 5 and 15 minutes, and can be be used as often as necessary.

According to the American Cancer Society, the theory behind the TENS machine was developed by Dr. Ronald Melzac and Dr. Patrick Wall in 1965. Melzac and Wall believed that the electronic stimulation of nerves caused a reaction in the spinal cord, which blocked the body from experiencing pain. This idea formed the basis for the TENS machine, which became a commonly used form of therapy in the 1970s.

Suggested Uses

According to the American Cancer Society, supporters of TENS machines believe that they are useful for managing pain associated with a number of conditions including surgery, childbirth, migraines, sports injuries, arthritis, tendinitis, cancer and other serious illnesses. The American Cancer Society states that, although many practitioners believe Tens can cure pain, few believe the therapy actually cures the underlying causes of the pain. Instead, the pain-relieving properties are thought to be associated with stimulating the production of natural pain killers within the body, called endorphines.

Medical Evidence

The American Cancer Society suggests that the use of the TENS machine may be useful at short-term pain relief, but that there is little conclusive evidence demonstrating its effectiveness at relieving long-term pain. The ACS site's small clinical studies that have demonstrated that patients experiencing mild nerve damage pain may experience pain relief form the use of the TENS machine. Additional studies are cited by the American Cancer Society, some of which suggest the TENS machine has been useful in pain management while others have demonstrated that it did not relieve pain associated with surgery, or childbirth, and that TENS was not as effective as other alternative treatments at managing lower back pain.

Risks & Side Effectss

There are few side effects associated with a TENS machine, when used properly. However, if the electrical currents are too intense and/or the TENS machine is used correctly, surface burns can appear on the skin. Those who are pregnant or have heart problems should not use TENS. Finally, electrodes should not be attached directly over the heart, on the brain, over the eyes, or on the front of the throat.

Purpose of Sweet Oil

A sweet oil is defined as any liquid edible oil derived from a plant. However, it most commonly consists of olive oil. It is used frequently as an ingredient in home remedies.

Sweet oil can have a soothing effect on sunburned skin and lips. Cool some oil in the refrigerator and apply to the burned areas liberally to relieve stinging and burning.

Ear Infection

To alleviate an ear infection, heat the oil first. Using a dropper, administer three to five drops into the ear and cover with a cotton ball. The heated oil helps the ear canals relax and drain naturally.

Skin Moisturizer

Sweet oil is an emollient that can help moisturize your skin. Apply to the skin after showering to help your body retain it's natural moisture.

Hair Treatment

If your hair is dry or sun-damaged, sweet oil can be used as a substitute for commercial hair treatments. Comb some warm oil through the hair and wrap your hair in a towel for half an hour, then shower and style your hair as normal.

Sweet oil is a processed, low-grade olive oil that is not designed for cooking. It lacks the rich flavor of good quality virgin olive oil.

Home Remedy for Heat Bumps

In summer, the temperature rises, and simple activities like running, jogging, and some sports can lead to heat rashes and heat bumps on your back, chest, under the arms, and the legs---typically the upper thighs. These can look like bug bites, but it's merely your skin's reaction to heat and chafing, and a home remedy for heat bumps can deal with it.

Cool it Off

A simple ice pack can often do the trick as a home remedy for heat bumps. Put a few cubes in a plastic bag, seal it to prevent leakage, and then wrap a cloth around it. Place it on the heat bumps for between 5 to 10 minutes and then remove. Repeat it at four to six hour intervals until the redness fades. You can also cool off by just using a plain old cold shower or bath. Afterward, rather than using a towel to get dry, allow yourself to air dry, this will cut down on irritation to your skin.

Use Some Powders

There's baking soda, cornstarch and oatmeal; all three can help---in different ways---as a home remedy for heat bumps. Apply either baking soda or cornstarch to your skin after a cold shower or bath. They absorb the excess water on your skin that exacerbates the heat bumps. Baking soda and oatmeal can help give you relief in a warm bath. In fact, an oatmeal bath is used to treat chicken pox. Sprinkle two tablespoons to the bath water, stir until it's dissolved, and then soak in the water.

Aloe vera is an ideal home remedy for heat bumps and rashes. Aloe helps to relieve swelling and itching of irritated skin, and it is beneficial for cooling and soothing the skin. Simply squeeze it from a cut leaf and apply to the affected area two to three times daily. Over time, this will heal the skin. Do not use commercial lotions; they are full of chemicals that can clog your pores and lead to still more heat bumps and rashes.

Avoid Chaffing

Wearing tight clothes during physical activity is often the first step in developing heat bumps or rash. Not only do such clothes rub your skin, but they hold in moisture, both of which are factors in causing the rash. To avoid both problems, wear clothes that are lightweight and loose-fitting. The reduction in chafing and allowing your sweat to evaporate will ease any heat bumps you have, and allow them to naturally diminish.

Uses of Vinegar in Women

Uses of Vinegar in Women

Vinegar is created through the natural fermentation, or artificial oxidation, of fruit or other substances containing sugar. The benefits of vinegar are numerous, and range from household cleaner to food condiment. There are a variety of vinegars available to consumers, but apple cider and white vinegar are the most common types.

Nail Fungus

Nail fungus occurs when fungi infect the flesh under fingernails or toenails. A person is usually exposed to the fungus in warm, damp areas like showers and swimming pools. Women face additional risks from salon tools when they obtain acrylic and other types of fake fingernails. The infection can cause the edges of the nail to crumble, and thicken and discolor the other areas of the nail. Due to its unsightly appearance and potential for pain, women may feel self-conscious about exposing the infected nails and restrict their choice of footwear. Soaking the infected nails daily in a vinegar solution made from one part vinegar and two parts water, may ease the infection, according to the Mayo Clinic. Any area exposed to the solution should be rinsed thoroughly and dried.

Rosacea is a skin condition that causes a noticeable redness on the skin, broken blood vessels and tiny red bumps. More women than men suffer from rosacea, and though there is no cure for it, treatment can ease the symptoms. White vinegar can improve the appearance of rosacea by reducing the yeast and bacteria on the skin, indicates MedicineNet. A white vinegar soak, or cleanse, applied to the affected skin in a solution composed of one part vinegar and six parts water is sufficient to reduce the yeast and bacteria. Some people find that white vinegar aggravates the condition, so a person should test a small area before using the treatment.

Osteoporosis is the loss of bone mass that occurs when a lack of calcium causes the insides of bones to become porous. At around age 35, all adults begin to lose bone mass, but women are more likely than men to have osteoporosis. One way to help prevent osteoporosis is increasing daily calcium intake with food or supplements. Vinegar, white or apple cider, can increase calcium absorption.

Superficial Folliculitis

Superficial folliculitis, commonly referred to as ingrown hairs, is a bacterial infection of the upper part of the hair follicle. The infected areas have an appearance similar to pimples, and they're usually itchy, but can be painful on occasion. Folliculitis can occur in any area that has hair follicles, including underarms, legs and the bikini area, and can cause embarrassment and discomfort. Using a wet compress with white vinegar may ease the symptoms of superficial folliculitis, according to the Mayo Clinic.

How to Treat Hemorrhoids Naturally

Hemorrhoids are a pain in the "you know what." Those swollen, tender and often itchy, inflamed veins in your anus can make even the most focused person totally distracted. Anyone can get hemorrhoids, in fact, it's estimated that eight out of ten people have this common complaint. Heredity plays a role, but so does diet and personal care, in who gets this condition. Here are some helpful ways to help avoid hemorrhoids and help relieve the discomfort when they strike.

Stop sitting around doing nothing. Most hemorrhoids are caused by the straining during a bowel movement. This straining is what causes those veins to swell, and the logical remedy is to stop the strain. Add more bran, green beans, apples, carrots and leafy greens to your diet, along with plenty of water. The fiber should help make stools softer and easier to pass.

Keep your bottom as clean as a baby's. Wipe gently with a super-soft toilet paper, or utilize the new adult wipes. Baby wipes are also a good choice, many contain aloe which can heal abrasions and can soothe tender areas.

Sit on it. Make a sitz bath with some epson salts and soak the offended area for several minutes a day. You can also soak a cotton ball with witch hazel and apply that to the hemorrhoids. Witch hazel is a good choice because it causes the blood vessels to shrink, which can reduce the size and discomfort of hemorrhoids.

Resist the itch. Don't scratch itchy hemorrhoids. Scratching can spread infection. Try the witch hazel, or try to limit what you eat. Diet can play a part in how much hemorrhoids itch. Certain foods like coffee, beer, cola and some strong spices can irritate bowels as they pass through.

Go natural. A salve made of Horse Chestnut is a soothing tonic to inflamed hemorrhoids. It is widely used in Europe to sooth and shrink varicose veins along with hemorrhoids.

Fungal Ear Infections & Cures

All you know is you have a painful earache that refuses to go away. It keeps you up at night and may even affect your ability to hear. You may have a fungal ear infection. Knowing when to go to the doctor is important so that you get the right diagnosis and get past the pain and inconvenience of an unrelenting earache.

Bacterial or Fungal?

Ear infections can be bacterial or fungal and the difference is crucial in understanding the healing process. A bacterial infection is treated with an antibiotic, and if all goes well it clears right up. However, if a misdiagnosis is made, a fungus will thrive on an antibiotic. Think about times when you may have been on an antibiotic and suddenly you also get a yeast infection--it's the same imbalance as when an antibiotic kills one type of bacteria while feeding another.

Ask your doctor to determine if it is bacterial or fungal before she gets out her prescription pad. It might save you the cost of an antibiotic or an antifungal medication, not to mention the time and pain involved if a misdiagnosis is made.

An over-the-counter defense might be found in Lotrimen drops (for athlete's foot) because it is an antifungal; it might be worth a try if you can't get to your care provider.

Alternative Cures for Fungal Ear Infection

There are many herbal and alternative remedies for fungal infections, which certainly should be a consideration for your health as well as your budget. Natural fungicides cost less and tend to work fast in getting the upper hand on a fungal infection of any kind.

Garlic is one of the most effective antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal substances available and is certainly inexpensive. The combined effects of garlic's sulfur and hydrogen are a potent antioxidant as well. Chop garlic into small pieces and add a few drops of oregano, lavender or clove oil. Let it soak for two hours. Pull the oil into a syringe and place several drops into the ear canal. Pack it with a cotton ball. Do this three to four times a day to kill the fungus as well as the pain. You can also do this with tea tree oil, which also is an antifungal, antibacterial and antifungal solution. There is absolutely no risk in using this oil, with the exception of an allergy to one of it's compounds.

Other natural remedies include plant tannins, which come from supplements or from red wines such as cabernet and merlot.

Colloidal silver is also available at natural food stores; place a few drops in your ears three to four times a day.

If you are prone to ear infections of either kind, you should consider purchasing ear putty or swimmer's ear plugs to use when you are swimming, showering or washing your hair. Keeping the inner ear dry at all times leaves no place for fungus to grow, as it likes moist warm areas.

As an added preventative measure, take a probiotic daily to keep your immune system strong. These are available at natural food and health food stores. Eat plenty of raw foods that include vitamin C, keep hydrated and get sufficient rest to help rebuild and restore your immune system.

Alternative Melanoma Treatments

Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer and occurs equally in men and women. This cancer develops in the cells that manufacture melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. It can lay dormant for as many as 50 years after the sunburn that triggered it. Herbal treatments for this condition should be used in conjunction with standard cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation and immunotherapy. Always be sure to let your doctor know if you are taking any sort of supplements.

Herbal Treatments

Astragalus increases effectiveness of IL-2, a common immunotherapy treatment that mimics our body's own IL-2 cells, that is used in melanoma cases. It also increases production of natural killer cells, which destroy cells with damaged DNA. Take 1,000 milligrams three times a day. Cat's claw tincture also stimulates production of natural killer cells. Take as directed on the label in cup of water with 1 teaspoon of lemon juice. Kudzu contains daidzen, which halts the growth of certain types of melanoma. Take 10 milligrams three times daily. Soy isoflavone concentrate also contains this substance and gives the same benefit. Take 3,000 milligrams daily. You may choose one or the other and do not need to take both. Lentinan can slow the invasion of melanoma to cells in other parts of the body. This is taken in powder form and should be used in a dosage given by a healthcare provider. Polysaccharide kureha (PSK) slows the spread of melanoma to the lungs. Take 6,000 milligrams daily. Reishi increases the body's production of IL-2. Take 3,000 milligrams daily. Siberian ginseng is helpful for forms of cancer that are responding to immunotherapy, a common treatment in melanoma. Take pure eleuthero extract as directed on the label with 1/4 cup of water.

Do not use astragalus if you have an infection or fever. Avoid cat's claw if you are taking insulin for diabetes. Soy isoflavone concentrate can cause upset stomach. If this occurs, stop using and take kudzu instead.

Other Suggestions

Avoid getting sunburn but still get regular sun exposure. It is necessary to produce vitamin D, which helps melanoma cells return to a regular growth and reproduction cycle. Aim for at least 20 minutes a day in the early morning or late afternoon. Eat a lot of orange and yellow fruits and vegetables as well as green leafy vegetables. They contain vitamin A, which complements vitamin D. A study published in the December 1996 Journal of the American Medical Association found that selenium reduced the spread of melanoma cells. Take 150 milligrams daily.

How to Get Rid of Beauty Spots on the Face With Garlic

How to Get Rid of Beauty Spots on the Face With Garlic

Moles, or beauty spots, are a cluster of skin cells that have turned black or dark brown with pigment. Most beauty spots are harmless, though they can be unsightly on the face or neck. Several home remedies exist to remove, or at least lighten, beauty spots. One of the simplest home remedies is to apply garlic to the spot. Keep in mind that all moles should be checked out by a dermatologist because they can sometimes indicate a more serious condition.

Crush one to two cloves of garlic into paste using a garlic press. You may need to crush the garlic further using the back of a spoon if the garlic press fails to reduce the garlic to a paste.

Place masking tape around the beauty spot to protect the skin around it. Garlic can burn the skin, so take care to place the garlic paste only on the mole. You may also use petroleum jelly to create a barrier between your skin and the garlic.

Apply the garlic paste to the beauty spot using a cotton swab. Cover the mole with a bandage.

Leave the bandage and garlic in place for up to four hours. You can repeat this treatment three times a day. You may begin to see results in two to four days.

Colon Cleansing for Constipation and Parasites

No matter how careful you are about what you consume, toxins can build up in your body over time. These toxins can affect your entire system, causing a variety of health problems. The buildup of toxins in your system begins in the colon. If you experience symptoms of being tired, irritable and depressed; have frequent headaches and irregularity; and recurring gas, allergies or intolerance to certain foods, you may be in need of colon cleansing. Through colon cleansing, you can rebalance your system and improve your physical, emotional and mental health.

Functions of the Colon

The food we eat is processed through the colon. As food travels through the colon, the nutrients the body needs are removed and released into the blood stream and the waste is eliminated. People tend to overeat at times, putting too much material into the colon. The colon can become overloaded and experience blockage, which leads to constipation. When this happens, waste can build up in the colon, causing the release of toxins and parasites that affect other bodily systems.

Health Benefits of Colon Cleansing

The purpose of colon cleansing is to remove stagnant material from the colon, thereby reducing toxic levels within the body as well as parasites, harmful bacteria, food additives, heavy metals and harmful chemicals. Colon cleansing improves the efficiency of the colon, which means food is digested and waste is eliminated in a more timely fashion, providing less opportunity for the buildup and reoccurrence of harmful toxins and parasites.

Colon Cleansing Diet

A good colon diet helps the colon function properly. Unfortunately, the modern day Western diet does not do this; in fact, the highly processed food we eat today does the opposite. We need to go back to eating the way our ancestors did, a diet high in natural unprocessed foods and lots of fiber. Natural foods can be broken down easily, and the fiber keeps things moving along in the colon, preventing constipation and the buildup of toxins and parasites. The diet should consist of lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, nut, beans, whole grains, fish, small portions of lean meats and dairy products and plenty of water. You should avoid fast foods, fried foods, junk foods, hydrogenated oils, partially hydrogenated oils, refined sugar and processed white flower. Learn which foods are good for you and which to avoid, and then make the right choices in the grocery store.

Supplements to Enhance the Diet

Laxatives and diuretic herbs like Licorice root, alfalfa, violet leaf and marshmallow root clean out excess and impacted waste from the colon (cure and prevent constipation). Black walnut hull and pumpkin seed remove parasites; Irish moss and passion flower leaf sooth irritation in the digestive tract; Witch hazel, capsicum, gentian root and cranberry act as antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidants. Unless you are very knowledgeable about the formulation of herbs, it may not be practical to take all of these; however, there are convenient formulations available at health stores with these and other herbs designed for colon-cleansing purposes. Alternatively, you could consult with an herbalist to have formulations compounded for you.

Because potent herbal formulations that rapidly detoxify the colon can cause headaches, nausea and other symptoms, it is a good idea to start with milder formulation to test your body's tolerance for various herbs. After you become familiar with various formulations and determine what works best, you can adjust dosages or try formulations with different ingredients.

How to Treat Acne with Garlic

Garlic is a not only a flavorful accent to many dishes, it is also a potent antibiotic. You can rub a dab of garlic juice (from the raw clove) onto a blemish for one to three minutes to kill off the bacteria surrounding the blemish.

The Gift of Garlic

Wash your hands thoroughly. Make sure to wash between your fingers, around your wrists and under your fingernails.

Cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser such as Cetaphil. Pat dry with a clean towel.

Peal away the skin around the garlic clove and separate one clove from the bunch.

Slice the end of the clove with a clean, sharp knife. You will be able to see the garlic juice.

Place the end of the clove (the juicy side) on the blemishes. Dab the end and move on to the next blemish, if any. This may sting!

Zinc Cream for Sweating

Zinc Cream for Sweating

For those with excessive sweat, daily interactions with people can be an embarrassing experience. Armpit perspiration can be maintained with deodorant and antiperspirant, but sweaty palms and feet are likely to go untreated. Zinc is a trace element found in the body that has a variety of health benefits. A cream made from zinc can be applied directly to the skin to form a barrier against sweat while retaining the skin's moisture. The cream is available from health stores, but can be made at home with only a few ingredients.

Fill the bottom of a double-boiler or sauce pot on the stove, and turn the heat onto low. Set on the double-boiler top or heatproof container.

Combine 3 tablespoons of olive oil and 2 tablespoons of beeswax in the top container and stir with a wooden spoon. Heat the mixture while constantly stirring until the beeswax has dissolved. Set the pan aside to cool slightly.

Stir together 3 tablespoons of water with 1 tablespoon zinc oxide powder in a small, airtight container, and attach the lid. Shake the lid vigorously to combine; the powder will not dissolve.

Pour the zinc mixture into the pan while whisking to combine.

How to Cleanse Barium Sulfate From the Body

Barium sulfate is a medicine used in diagnostic testing. It is a radiopaque agent, which means it offers a contrast between organ tissues during an X-ray. The Mayo Clinic, in an article about Barium Sulfate, states, The contrast will help the doctor see any special conditions that may exist in that organ or part of the body. Barium sulfate is given by mouth in the form or tablets or liquids or as an enema. Once the testing is over, there are a few things you can do to cleanse the barium sulfate out of your body.

Drink plenty of fluids. The National Institute of Health, in its article Barium Sulfate, suggests to drink water and other fluids once testing has been completed.

Follow doctors orders. Listen carefully as your doctor or medical staff personnel tells you when, what, and how much to drink and eat following the test. According to the National Institute of Health, You will be given specific directions to follow before and after your test. Make certain you understand what you need to do. Because barium sulfate is given in various forms, in various doses, and by mouth or rectum, there are no guidelines that suit all people.

Use a laxative. Buy an over-the-counter laxative. Using a laxative is often a part of follow-up care after the use of barium sulfate, reports the National Institute of Health. But each situation is different, so only use a laxative if your doctor tell you to.

How Can I Get Impacted Wax Out of My Ear?

Impacted wax in the ear can create an uncomfortable feeling of fullness or an earache. It can even affect hearing. There are a number of different remedies that can remove impacted wax from the ear, most of which revolve around softening the wax for ease of removal. It is recommended to see your physician to ascertain the severity of your earwax problem, as well as to establish any underlying conditions that need to be considered. If you have no underlying conditions, holes or perforations in your ear drum, you can safely eliminate impacted ear wax at home.

Apply a couple of drops of the baby or mineral oil, glycerin or peroxide into the ear twice a day. Do this procedure for no longer than four or five days.

After a couple of days, once the wax has softened, fill the bulb syringe with warm water and squirt directly into the ear. Tilt your head to one side while you are doing this. Pull the outer part of your ear up and away from your head. This straightens out the ear canal and allows the water to completely irrigate the ear. Tilt your head to the opposite direction and allow the water to flow out into a sink, basin or onto a towel.

Repeat the irrigation process until all the wax has been removed from your ear.

Dry the outer ear with a towel or hand held hair dryer.

How to Buy Bioidentical Hormones in Canada

How to Buy Bioidentical Hormones in Canada

Many doctors in the United States and Europe have begun using bioidentical hormones for hormone replacement therapy, also called HRT. Doctors in Canada are beginning to prescribe this natural treatment for HRT, but Canadian availability can still be challenging.

Understand bioidentical hormones. Hormones regulate almost every function in our bodies. Bioidentical hormone replacements are very different from traditional medicine's synthetic hormones in that bioidentical hormones look molecularly the same as and act like the ones our bodies make. Bioidentical, or natural, hormones are made from plants, such as soy, and animals, such as pigs. The materials from these sources are structurally changed in a lab so that the molecules are the same as the ones we produce. Synthetic hormones cause the body to react in a way that our hormones do, but synthetic hormones do not resemble real hormones structurally.

Find a doctor or health care practitioner who prescribes bioidentical hormones. While challenging, it is becoming easier to find doctors in Canada who work with natural hormones. Check out sites such as, which have helpful guides and forums for people seeking bioidentical prescribing doctors in different territories and provinces.

Find a compounding pharmacist. Compounding pharmacists use natural hormones mixed into an application, using various strengths and combinations of the hormones. The amounts and types depend on the doctor's prescription. Health care practitioners who prescribe bioidentical hormones can help you find a compounding pharmacy. For those still looking for a physician or clinician that works with bioidentical hormones, these pharmacies usually can recommend one.
The Association of Compounding Pharmacists of Canada has a list of pharmacies. It also can help you find a doctor in your area.

Decide which type of bioidentical hormone you want to use. Your doctor or pharmacist can offer suggestions based on your individual needs. Natural hormones come in many forms, including creams, gels, lozenges, suppositories, injections and oral supplements. Many people feel the transdermal (applied to the skin) method of bioidentical hormones works best because the hormones are easily absorbed this way.

Purchase natural hormone replacements in herbal formulas. Large retailers in Canada, such as Costco and Sears, offer herbal HRT supplements that contain soy and other isofavones that work like bioidentical hormones.

Uses of EMU Oil

Emu oil is derived from the fat of the native Australian bird. After the emu undergoes processing to extract its healthy red meat, the fat is then refined into oil. This substance is refined, sterilized and deodorized. Emu oil is used for eliminating inflammation, bacteria and allergens.
Emu oil contains vitamin E, which promotes healing; vitamin A, which promotes skin repair; linoleic acid, which eases muscle aches and joint pain; oleic acid, which promotes cell regeneration; sapogens, which soften skin and terpines, which are known antiseptic, according to

Joint and Muscle Relief

As Emu oil has anti-inflammatory agents, it can naturally ease pain, muscle discomfort, and joint pains and swelling. Emu oil is widely used in sports medicine as well as for fitness enthusiasts who experience joint and muscle pains. The oil can reduce pain, swelling and stiffness and can be applied to the skin closest to the joint such as on the hands, feet, knees and elbows.

Skin and Hair Growth

Emu oil can encourage hair and skin growth. This is based on the research of Dr. Michael Holick, a Professor of Medicine, Physiology, and Dermatology at Boston University School of Medicine. Holick found out that in mice, there was a 20 percent increase in the growth of hair follicles, indicating continuous skin growth. Moreover, emu oil "awakened" 80 percent of the hair follicles that had been inactive. Individuals can massage an amount of emu oil into the bald or thinning part of the scalp three times a day. At night, people who have thinning hair can apply a greater amount of oil to the scalp and let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes.

Eczema Relief

Individuals suffering from atopic dermatitis or eczema, a chronic skin disorder, can be aided by emu oil. Eczema is characterized by inflamed and itchy skin and is typically experienced by people with a history of allergic asthma, rhinitis, conjunctivitis or food allergies. Emu oil is used to hydrate the skin since individuals suffering from this condition normally have dry skin. In order to do this, water is first added to the skin and then followed by the emu oil in order to retain the water inside the skin.

Anti-Aging Agent

Emu oil is known to contain powerful antioxidants, which regenerate skin cells and reduce wrinkles on the skin. This improves aging skin and makes it look younger. Furthermore, emu oil can thicken the skin as well as moisturize it. This oil can also prevent moisture loss as it traps the moisture inside the skin by forming a protective barrier.

Wound Healing

Emu oil can also speed up the healing of wounds while reducing the development of scar tissues. Patients that have just come out of surgery can find emu oil to be beneficial as it also utilizes an anti-inflammatory agent to soothe the wounds inflicted during surgery.

Home Remedies for Thrush

Thrush is a fungal infection that usually occurs in the mouth, and results from a change in the balance of bacteria and yeast in the body that normally keep the fungus under control. Thrush can be spread between people, especially between a mother and her breastfeeding infant, who may reinfect each other without treatment. Consider this information from the Mayo Clinic about home remedies for treating thrush.

Eating unsweetened or sugar-free yogurt with active cultures is a home remedy for treating thrush in adults as well as children.

Taking acidophilus capsules as a dietary supplement can shorten the duration of thrush and help prevent reinfection.

Eating foods with fresh raw or cooked garlic, or taking garlic dietary supplements, can prevent thrush from growing.

Nursing Pads

Women who are breastfeeding can treat thrush on the breast by using cotton or wool breast pads to absorb leaking milk that encourages the growth of thrush.

Dietary Changes

Decreasing the amount of fermented foods, such as breads, beer and wine, can reduce the ability of thrush to grow.

Dental Hygiene

Proper hygiene of your mouth and teeth, including brushing and flossing as recommended by your dentist, can help to get rid of thrush.

Frequent rinsing of your mouth with 1/2 tsp. of salt in an 8-oz. glass of water can prevent the growth of thrush in your mouth.

How to Use Tamanu Oil

How to Use Tamanu Oil

Calophyllum inophyllum is a tropical evergreen plant which can grow up to 30 meters high. The trunk is thick and the bark is dark to grayish brown. The plant grows in Southeast Asia, Southern India and the islands of Melanesia and Polynesia. The plant produces a nut from which the oil is extracted. The oil is called tamanu oil and has been used to treat everything from sore throats to scabies. Try tamanu oil to experience the benefits.

Apply tamanu oil to acne. Tamanu has antibacterial properties, according to, and thus it may help reduce acne lesions. Just apply the oil directly to the acne for a simple way of clearing the skin.

Use tamanu oil on psoriasis. Place a couple drops of oil on a clean cloth and apply to the areas with psoriasis. The anti-inflammatory properties of tamanu oil may be helpful to those suffering pain and inflammation from the psoriasis.

Apply tamanu oil directly to stretch marks. This oil contains vitamins A and E, and these antioxidants may help reduce the appearance of scars.

Use tamanu oil on rheumatism or arthritis. Apply directly to the skin and massage until the oil has been absorbed. Tamanu oil has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for rheumatism -- and natives of Fiji have used Tamanu for joint pain and arthritis.

Use tamanu oil on wrinkled areas of the face. The moisturizing properties may soften the appearance of your wrinkles.

Natural Flatulence Relief

Flatulence, also known as gas, is often accompanied by a feeling of being bloated. There are several possible causes for excessive flatulence. Each cause has a different possible natural remedy.

Causes of Excessive Flatulence

Some people unconsciously swallow air throughout the day, and especially when eating and drinking. The best way to reduce flatulence related to swallowing air is to pay attention to how you eat and drink. By consciously not swallowing air, flatulence can be reduced.

Other cases of flatulence can be an imbalance in the stomach that prevents complete absorption of carbohydrates, proteins or fats. Beans contain a natural substance that, if your digestive tract isn't accustomed to it, causes flatulence. If you find you have problems with flatulence after eating meat or dairy products, try ensuring that the food is chewed thoroughly.

Ginger can help to reduce flatulence. A common home remedy is to soak slices of ginger in lime juice and to chew on the slices after each meal. If that doesn't work, one common home remedy is to mix a pinch of salt, a pinch of asafoetida and a half teaspoon of dry ginger in a cup of warm water. A third ginger recipe involves making a mixture of one teaspoon pepper, one teaspoon dry ginger, and a teaspoon of dried cardamom seeds. Drink 1/2 teaspoon of this mixture in water after each meal.

Other Home Remedies

One home remedy for flatulence is to mix a teaspoon of baking soda with a little cola. This has been reported to help some people with flatulence. Two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar is also a common home remedy. Garlic is said to help, as are dill pickles. In fact, a tablespoon of pickle juice may help.

Commercially Available Natural Remedies

A number of commercially available natural remedies are available. Many of these contain ingredients to initially reduce the level of intestinal gas and also add ingredients to help bring your digestive system into balance. Flatulence is often a sign an imbalance in digestive microbes. Many of these remedies are available on-line or from a local natural foods market.

How to Detox Aluminum

How to Detox Aluminum

Aluminum is one of the most common elements and is often classified as a heavy metal. Aluminum cookware and aluminum foil are common in most American households. This metal is not necessary for normal body functions and may result in adverse health effects if it accumulates in the body. Aluminum is found in foods like pickles, self-rising flour, baking soda, cake mixes, sliced cheese and beer. Deodorants, toothpaste and antacids also contain aluminum. Change your cooking, eating and personal hygiene habits to reduce the amount of aluminum that enters your body.

Reduce your exposure to aluminum in your environment. Stop using deodorants and toothpaste that contain aluminum and do not cook using aluminum pots and aluminum foil.

Add cilantro and chlorella to your diet. Cilantro is a popular herb that contains enzymes that reportedly bind to aluminum in the body. The liver and kidneys are then able to remove the toxin from the body. Chlorella works with the enzymes in the liver to help detox the body of heavy metals like aluminum.

Add selenium to your diet. Selenium is a mineral that binds to metals like aluminum. Brazil nuts are a good source of selenium. Egg yolks, broccoli, garlic, tomatoes, lean beef and lean pork are also abundant sources of selenium.

Eat raw vegetables like radishes, cabbage, turnips, rutabaga, cauliflower and broccoli to boost liver enzymes for detoxification of the body.

Take supplements like milk thistle, vitamin C and vitamin E. These supplements support liver function and aid in detoxification.

Fast for 24 hours once each week. Begin your day by drinking herbal tea. End the day with a light meal of salad, fruit and fish or chicken.

Bathe in toxin absorbing bentonite clay once each week. Bentonite clay can absorb toxins that are stored in the skin. Dissolve two pounds of bentonite clay in a warm bath and soak for up to one hour. Rinse any clay residue by taking a cool shower after soaking in the warm clay bath.

Hep C Alternative Therapy

Hepatitis C is a viral infection that can severely damage the liver. This form of hepatitis is spread through the blood. Hepatitis C is a chronic infection that requires ongoing treatment to minimize liver damage. Due to its serious nature, you should only engage in alternative therapies under the guidance of a health care professional experienced in natural treatments, preferably for this specific condition. Designing a treatment regimen comprised of alternative therapies usually entails a combination of several to help combat symptoms from multiple angles.

Omega-3 fatty acids fight inflammation and increases immunity; take one or two capsules or one to three tablespoons of fish oil three times daily. Vitamin C provides antioxidant and immune support; healthcare practitioners usually recommend high doses and are commonly given through IV to treat Hepatitis C; talk to you doctor to determine the best dosage for you. Resveratrol has anti-viral effects; take 50 to 200 milligrams daily. N-acetyl cysteine(NAC) and s-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) support liver function; take 200 to 500 milligrams three times daily and 400 to 1,600 milligrams daily.

Milk thistle is one of the most effective herbs for treating liver disorders by minimizing damage and restoring function; take 160 milligrams three times daily. Green tea is a strong anti-inflammatory herb; take 250 to 500 milligrams daily. Cat's claw and reishi mushroom treat inflammation and fight viral infections; take 20 milligrams three times a day and 150 to 300 milligrams three times a day respectively. Phyllanthus exhibits anti-viral effects; take 200 milligrams two to four times a day.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, research on homeopathic remedies for hepatitis is lacking; the following treatments are commonly used by homeopaths to address symptoms of hepatitis. Homeopathy is a highly individualized system of medicine and suggested treatments are based on a number of factors in addition to the disease or condition being treated. You should consult with a professional homeopath if you are interested in making it part of your natural health strategy and to determine appropriate dosages.

Aconitum is used in the early stages of infection and can treat jaundice, fever and sharp pains in the liver. Belladonna acts on liver pains intensified by breathing and movement. Chelidonium relieves pain that starts in the liver and moves to the back and right shoulder and works best for people who have gray or yellow stool, fever and jaundice. China works best if you have tenderness in the liver and a feeling of fullness in the stomach. Lycopodium is most effective if you have tension in the liver, trouble standing up and can only eat small amounts of food before feeling full. Mercurius treats a tender, swollen liver and jaundice while Phosphorus is best if you have burning pains in the right rib and between the shoulder blades.

Other Suggestions

Acupuncture and massage might enhance immune function. While no special diet exists to manage hepatitis, eating small meals throughout the day can help with digestion, nausea and weight loss.

Do not supplement with Kava or vitamin A, both of which can cause liver failure if taken in excess, especially in people who already have liver problems.

Green Clay Benefits

Green Clay Benefits

Green clay, also known as illite, is an organic material comprised of a host of essential minerals, iron oxides, and decomposed plant material such as kelp and seaweed. Illite was called French green clay for centuries, named after the rock quarries in the south of France that yielded most of the world's illite deposits. The clay is truly green in color; the more it leans toward gray-green, the less valuable it is deemed. Green clay is used in alternative medicine, both externally and internally, for many reasons, but mostly for cleaning and detox because of its vast absorbent properties. Illite is also used to relieve menstrual cramps, morning sickness, diarrhea, indigestion, and heartburn.

Detoxification and Cleansing

The detoxification properties of green clay are widely revered by alternative health practitioners, estheticians, and environmental managers. According to a study published in Clay Minerals, Volume 34, Number 3, the absorption of different clays was studied, and green clay was found to be an ideal and cost-effective way to clean heavy metals from industrial wastewater. You can use it in a similar fashion to clean your digestive system and eliminate toxins. The recommended dose is one teaspoon of green clay powder stirred into an 8 oz. glass of water or 4 oz. glass of juice. Let stand overnight, stir with a plastic spoon, and drink on an empty stomach, either first thing upon rising or just before bed. This regimen can be repeated every day for 21 days and then resumed after a one-week break.

Menstrual Cramps and Morning Sickness

Menstrual cramps are treated both internally and externally with green clay. Women who are suffering extensively can drink the water and clay mixture for the first three weeks of their menstrual cycle. During menstruation, it is recommended to take a break from the clay mixture and instead apply a warm poultice to the lower abdomen. Green clay has also been used successfully as a treatment for nausea, and as such is a natural remedy for morning sickness. Rebecca Frey, in the article "French Green Clay," published in the Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine, states that green clay has been used to "cleanse the digestive tract, treat nausea or other gastric disorders, ease menstrual cramps, or relieve sore throats."

Vital Minerals

The mineral content of French green clay is extraordinary, including but not limited to: magnesium, calcium, potassium, zinc, silicon, selenium, iron, copper, and cobalt. Drinking a clay and water mixture delivers these mineral nutrients to the body, while simultaneously removing dangerous toxins like heavy metals, free radicals, and environmental pollutants. Raymond Dextreit, a French naturopath, claimed that the minerals in green clay provide healing power: copper battles infections, selenium boosts liver function, cobalt treats anemia, and all the minerals together work to retard the aging process and balance the body's natural equilibrium.

First Aid

As a soothing, healing balm for cuts, scrapes, small wounds, sprains, minor burns, insect bites, and aching muscles, green clay can be made into a poultice and applied directly to the affected area. The clay works for cuts, scrapes, and wounds by drawing out the infection. It is said to be a comforting remedy for aching muscles and joints, especially when combined with the essential oils of rosemary or lavender.

Beauty Treatments

The absorbent properties of French green clay work in beauty treatments by drawing out impurities and toxins from the skin, toning and firming while stimulating circulation. Estheticians use it to tighten pores, exfoliate dead skin, and reveal a smoother, fresher complexion. It is known to clear problem skin and heal blemishes, usually in the form of a clay mask. If you have a dry or sensitive skin complexion, you should use a clay mask only once a week, as the clay will absorb moisture from the skin along with any impurities. A green clay masks can be purchased ready-made, or you can mix it yourself from powdered clay, adding aloe vera if your skin is sensitive, or 4 or 5 drops of jojoba oil if your skin is oily.

Alternative Medicines for Removing Mucous Blockages in the Small Intestines

Mucous is a natural substance secreted by your intestines to help things move through your body smoothly. The presence of excess mucous can clog your internal plumbing. Aside from experiencing unpleasant symptoms, such as bloating and gas, you may not be getting enough nutrition if this happens. Fortunately, there are a number of alternative medicines for removing mucous blockages in the small intestines that may help you get back on track.

Understanding Your Condition

Trust your gut. The primary role of the small intestines is to break down and absorb fats, carbohydrates and minerals, and a mucous blockage will interfere with this process. So, if you're feeling tired all the time, bloated and gassy after meals, experiencing constipation, or seeing more mucous in your stool than usual, then it's time to plan a strategy to improve your digestive health.

Recognize that bacterial overgrowth and inflammation often accompany mucous blockages in the small intestines since undigested food particles end up fermenting instead of being broken down for nutrient absorption. Therefore, counterattacking this invasion is part of your natural approach toward correcting your condition.

Natural Treatments

Stick to a diet that is high in fiber and low in carbohydrates. This means stepping up your intake of raw vegetables, whole grains, fresh fruits and legumes.

Reduce or eliminate your intake of arachidonic acid. Also known as omega-6, this essential fatty acid is found exclusively in animal protein and contributes to inflammation. If you simply can't live without meat or dairy products, then consider supplementing with omega-3 (EPA) to inhibit the inflammatory activity of arachidonic acid, as well as other proinflammatory agents, such as leukotrienes.

Bring calm to your digestive system by supplementing with peppermint oil capsules. Canadian researchers have found that menthol, the active constituent of peppermint, is a natural antispasmodic that relaxes smooth intestinal muscle and relieves bowel spasms.

Preserve a healthy balance of intestinal flora with probiotics. Probiotics are dietary supplements that help to promote the production of digestive enzymes, such as lactase. They also encourage the survival of "healthy" bacteria in the gut as opposed to harmful bacteria. Studies conducted at the National University of Ireland have shown that the introduction of Bifidobacterium infantis 35624 and Lactobacillus salivarius reduce inflammatory responses in immune cells of the intestinal lining.

One Final Note

If you don't experience any relief from using these alternative medicines for removing mucous blockages in the small intestines, then check with your doctor to rule out any pre-existing or underlying conditions that may be causing your digestive system to slow down, such as food allergies, hypothyroidism, diabetes, pancreatic enzyme deficiency or an autoimmune disorder.

How to Reverse Bronchitis and Asthma After Quitting Smoking

The two types of chronic obstructive diseases (COPD) are bronchitis and asthma, conditions that refer to the difficulty of breathing out used air from your lungs. One primary cause of these diseases is tobacco abuse, including second hand smoke. If left untreated, COPD can weaken your lungs and cause numerous infections and other complications. By using all the natural remedies below, you can strengthen your lungs and reverse the symptoms associated with smoking.

Eat foods high in magnesium daily. Magnesium acts by soothing your respiratory airway to allow more air to flow through. Foods rich in magnesium include beans, peanuts and pumpkin seeds.

Add onions to your diet daily. Onions include potent sulfur substances that lower lung tissue inflammation related to asthma and bronchitis.

Consume foods rich in selenium daily. This powerful compound maintains lung tissue elasticity while reducing the inflammation associated with bronchitis and asthma. Foods high in selenium include wheat germ, lentils and cashew nuts.

Take ascorbic acid (vitamin C) tablets daily. Ascorbic acid is an antioxidant that treats bronchitis and asthma by helping your body eliminate the free radicals that inflame your airways, causing mucus to thicken. One 500 mg tablet taken daily is the recommended dosage of vitamin C.

Add tofu to your diet every day. Tofu is made from soy beans, which are rich in antioxidants called flavonoids. They act by reducing inflammation in the airways of your lungs enabling you to breathe easier. Tofu also helps prevent against lung cancer.

Chucking & Rolling Massage Techniques

Chucking & Rolling Massage Techniques

Imagine the sensation of floating in wave swept seas of aromatic oils as massage floods the tissue with healing lymph and provides the body with a sense of deep and lasting relaxation. Therapeutic massage kneads the muscles with chucking and rolling techniques that manipulate and soften muscle fibers. These strokes increase blood flow to the tissue and reduce muscle adhesions. The body begins to relax as the tissue softens.

Skin Rolling

The practice of pushing and pulling the skin is an Asian technique called Tui Na.
The practice of pushing and pulling the skin is an Asian technique called Tui Na.

Skin rolling is a friction technique used to release tissue fibers between the skin and muscle. Grab the tissue between the pads of the fingers, pick up and roll the skin underneath itself and walk along one side of the back, similar to rolling meat into a tortilla. Lift the skin and shake gently before rolling to release it from the underlying tissue. Working slowly across the back from the top of the shoulders down to the sacrum, this stroke warms the skin and prepares it for deeper massage work.

Applied to the limbs, chucking loosens tension in the joints and resets muscle spindle cells and golgi tendons in the joints. This technique reduces tension and allows the muscle to lengthen. With the client in a supine position, facing the ceiling, begin rocking the leg at the hip. Cupping the hands, scoop the skin and muscle, lift and drop the tissue in a continuous motion over the sides and tops of limbs. Similar to the hand motions required to keep the body afloat, chuck the muscle by rolling the hands inward and upward along the tissue. Continue chucking the muscle tissue all the way down to the feet, paying specific attention to tension in the hips, knees and ankle joints.

Rocking the body causes muscle spindles in the tissue to reset and relax.
Rocking the body causes muscle spindles in the tissue to reset and relax.

Chucking and rolling are forms of massage friction techniques. Friction improves the functions of cells in the skin, muscles and organs and aids in their regeneration. Absorbing the fluid around joints, chucking and rolling strokes direct blood and lymph. Washing over loosened muscle fibers, lymph flushes cellular debris trapped in the tissue. Two types of friction-resistance techniques work the muscle and skin. One stroke warms and prepares the skin for deeper work, such as skin rolling and another activates receptors in the muscle and tissue. The latter technique activates receptor switches in the joints and muscles that govern their length, flexibility, tension and resistance.

Massage as a system of varied technique has many different names and definitions for its strokes. Some techniques use kneading or chucking, wringing, twisting and rocking in the same way that deeper friction strokes work. Kneading is different from skin rolling because kneading releases individual muscle fibers and skin rolling only releases the superficial layers of the skin.

Similar to kneading bread, lift, grab and squeeze the muscle so that it folds in on itself. This technique can be applied to the torso, legs, arms, shoulders, anywhere that the therapist has access to manipulate tissue, in good taste. Chucking might precede and follow wringing, rocking and rolling techniques.

How to Eliminate Head Lice Naturally

How to Eliminate Head Lice Naturally

Head lice is common among young children and can turn your household upside down for days as you try to eliminate the nasty, annoying little creatures. For those who prefer a natural approaching to healing, head lice treatments can be extremely frightening, as they are pure chemicals. Fortunately, a simple natural remedy can help you eliminate head lice.

Add 10 drops of lavender essential oil for every 1/4 cup of olive oil and massage the oils into the scalp and hair thoroughly. Olive oil helps to eliminate head lice as it dissolves their exoskeletons to kill them. The lavender stops the itch and irritation caused by the lice. Cover your head with a shower cap and sleep with the treatment in.

Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the eyebrows if nits are present. Reapply it several times a day until you completely eliminate the lice.

Remove and throw away the shower cap and then shampoo the hair as usual. You may need to shampoo twice to remove all of the olive oil; however, do not use a conditioner. Rinse the scalp and hair completely with apple cider vinegar after shampooing which helps to loosen the glue that holds lice eggs on the hair. Rinse with hot water.

Comb the hair to remove tangles and then use a nit comb to eliminate as many eggs as possible and then allow the hair to dry naturally.

Continue this natural head lice treatment every other day until there is no sign of lice or eggs.

Herbal Cure for Impotence

Impotence is marked by the inability to achieve or maintain an adequate erection for sexual intercourse. This condition can be chronic, recurrent or just an isolated incident. Erections result from a combination of blood vessel and nerve function that are influenced by testosterone. The most important part of the process is the production and release of nitric oxide, which makes the penis fill with blood. Before undergoing natural or standard treatments, an exam is advised to make sure there is no underlying condition. Herbal treatments are usually effective within three to four weeks of use.

Impotence can be caused by many things and there is often a mix of physical and psychological factors. The most frequent cause of impotence is diabetes due to its effects on proper circulation. High blood pressure and medications that treat it are another common cause. Anti-depressants can also affect sexual function. Excessive smoking and drinking are also culprits. Fatigue, stress and poor nutrition are not direct causes but can greatly compound the issue.

Herbal Treatments

Be sure to discuss herbal treatments with your doctor. Unless a specific dose is indicated, take as directed on the product label.

Ashwaganda liquid extract is a principal herb in Indian medicine and has a long history of use as a treatment for sexual dysfunction. Catuaba tincture can strengthen erections and increase sexual interest. Cistanche increases production of nitric oxide. Epimedium increases blood flow to the penis and stimulates the sensory nerves. Morinda is a natural anti-depressant that improves erectile function and can also lower blood pressure. Cistanche, epimedium and morinda are available from professional herbalists. Use as directed. Damiana is a well-known aphrodisiac and increases the stability of an erection during intercourse. Take one- half teaspoon of tincture in one-quarter cup of water three times a day. Gingko helps release nitric oxide from the linings of the blood vessels. Take 240 milligrams daily for at least six months. Muira puama tincture increases libido and the strength of erections. Yohimbe is perhaps the best known herb for improving sexual function. It increases blood flow to the penis and is more effective in men who consume a low-fat diet.

Precautions about Herbal Treatments

Avoid damiana if you have anemia or any condition that causes chronic bleeding. Men with prostate disorders should not use epimedium. Ginkgo should be avoided if you are taking blood thinning medications. The beneficial effects of ginseng are cancelled out by morphine and any related drugs, including cocaine.

Be sure to use yohimbe tincture and not tablets. They often do not contain an effective amount of the herb. Do not use within 12 hours of taking Viagra. It is important to take the dose indicated on the product label and no more. Taking too much can result in priapism, which results in a painful erection that needs surgery.

Other Natural Supplements

Poor nutrition is not a direct cause of impotence but it can be a factor that makes the issue worse. The following supplements can be of help.

Vitamin C increases blood flow. Take 250 to 500 milligrams up to three times a day. Vitamin E, B6, and the mineral zinc are heavily involved in hormone production. Take 400 IU, 50-100 milligrams and 30 milligrams daily respectively. Essential fatty acids are beneficial for blood flow. Supplements that are particularly helpful are evening primrose oil, fish oil and borage oil. Take 1,000 milligrams three times daily. It is not necessary to take all three; one is sufficient. Magnesium and the B vitamins are useful for combating stress. Take 200 milligrams of magnesium twice a day and 50 to 100 milligrams once a day of a B complex.

Other Suggestions

Smoking damages the nitric oxide mechanism that is vital for achieving erections. This sort of damage cannot be completely repaired by natural or standard treatments. Limit bicycle riding to one or two times per week. Address any psychological issues that are present. Even if they are not sexual in nature, they can have a big impact on sexual performance and interest.

Home Remedy for Coldsores

Cold sores are fluid-filled skin blisters that usually occur around the mouth and on the face. They also are called fever blisters. These sores are usually symptoms of the herpes simplex type 1 virus, which often is known simply as HSV-1. Cold sores tend to go away on their own, but there also are several easy home remedies that can be used to expedite the process.

Changing up the diet is an easy home remedy for eliminating cold sores. To do this, one must abstain from eating both salty and acidic foods. Some examples of these include peanuts, chocolate, seeds, peas, grains, whole wheat and oatmeal, all of which have high levels of arginine. Consumption of coffee and tea also should be limited, as should processed foods. It is advised to eat a diet that is vitamin rich, especially in vitamins A, C and E. Iron and zinc also are essential. A diet that is full of complex carbohydrates and antioxidants also can help get rid of cold sores.

Using a teabag is a quick, easy and inexpensive way to get rid of cold sores. A teabag should be applied directly over cold sores for several minutes at a time. This process should be repeated approximately every hour or so. Another option is to use a warm teabag and to press it over the sores for half an hour at a time.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is a type of astringent that is made from the bark and the leaves of the witch hazel shrub, and is useful for bruises, swelling and sores. Many people have it in their medicine cabinets. If you apply a dab of witch hazel on your finger and then place it directly on the sores, it can help them go away faster. The same applies to aloe vera oil or gel, and lemon balm extract.

Natural Methods for Shingles

If you're experiencing shingles, you may be seeking an alternative approach to treating the red, blistery, and painful rash. A reactivation of the chicken pox virus, shingles only strikes those who've already had chicken pox. Your shingle rash may appear blistery and have water-filled bumps. You may even experience pain or tingling at the affected area. Although traditional medications exist, the following alternative remedies may also give you some much-needed relief.

Vitamin Therapy

If you're interested in seeking natural or alternative methods for your shingles, consider adding vitamin supplements to your diet. Along with eliminating sugar from your diet, add Vitamins E, B12, and C. Vitamin C will help boost your immune system---take 1,000 milligrams daily. Vitamin E can be used both internally and externally. Liquid from the capsules can be squeezed directly onto lesions. Taking Vitamin E before meals may help to reduce the pain of shingles. Vitamin B12 injections may also reduce pain as well.

Creams and Ointments

"The Doctors' Book of Home Remedies for Women" recommends keeping your blisters wet to help them dry up more quickly. Calamine lotion also works well to help dry the blisters, but make sure you discontinue use after the blisters are completely dried. Milk on a washcloth applied directly to the blister can also help soothe blistery rashes. Consider making a paste from water mixed with baking powder and spread it over the shingles rash to dry the blisters and stop itching. To prevent infection, apply an antibacterial ointment to affected areas once your blisters start to scab.

If you're still experiencing pain after the skin rash or blisters have healed, use Zostrix topically to effectively relieve the pain of shingles. An over-the-counter cream made from an ingredient in red chili peppers called capsaicin, Zostrix may burn when it's first applied. However, after a few days, you should have some relief. Apply the cream three to four times a day until the pain goes away.

When to See a Doctor

If you suspect you have shingles, it's best to see your doctor immediately. If you treat your shingles within 48 hours, you're able to minimize the risk of long-term complications. Antiviral medications, if taken early, can reduce long-term shingle pain.

Detox Remedies

Detox Remedies

Detoxing is a process anyone can try to help the body break down and eliminate toxins that accumulate over the course of time. These toxins include environmental pollutants such as air and water pollution, and cigarette smoke, as well as many most people never consider, such as ingredients in packaged and processed foods, and alcohol. There are several ways you can help your body detox without making much effort.

Eat More Fruits and Vegetables

Eating more leafy greens and brightly colored fruits and vegetables, instead of a lot of meat, can help your body push out toxins. There are a few key organs that assist with toxin elimination: the kidneys, liver and skin. They do this by sorting the good nutrition from the bad and ridding the body of the bad. Sometimes, however, the build up of toxins becomes too much for our systems to handle, so we have to give them a little help. Eating more fresh fruits and vegetables can help because these foods are full of nutritional value, are easier for the body to digest than meats (proteins), grains and dairy products, and contain one of the best ingredients for your body: water.

Essentially, this method involves going on a raw vegan diet until you stop experiencing the effects of detoxification. Depending on the amount and types of toxins it is eliminating, the body shows various symptoms of detoxification, from needing to use the bathroom frequently, to boils, to foul smells in the skin, breath or bodily waste.

The Water Detox

Adding more water to your diet is a great way to flush out toxins. When you are not properly hydrated, your body begins to take water from other cells and add it to your blood cells, which adds unnecessary stress to your body's systems, including the circulatory, lymphatic and digestive systems. If you're not drinking 64 ounces of water per day, begin doing it now.

The Juice Fast

A juice fast is one of the easiest and best options for a detox because it is simple, effective and easy on your wallet. All you have to do is drink juices that have no sugar added, or you can purchase fruit in bulk and juice it at home. Do not eat anything during this type of fast: You will get all of your nutrition from juices. If at all possible, include at least one vegetable juice a day, and then choose fruit juices that promote toxin elimination, such as grapefruit, pomegranate, blueberry and cranberry. You can also drink water and herbal teas on this fast, but sweeten your tea with honey instead of sugar, if needed. Avoid dairy products.

Detox Programs

There are several detox programs on the market that target specific systems, such as colon and digestive system cleanses. These are a series of herbal supplements and/or teas to be taken or drunk every day until the supplies run out. Read package directions thoroughly for specific instructions on how to use them.

Hygiene and Exercise During Detox

Depending on the amount of toxins your body is eliminating, there are many forms in which they can be released, including sweat, boils and waste. Thus, it is important to be on top of your personal hygiene. This may include taking two or more showers a day, brushing your teeth more than twice a day or applying topical ointments to any boils or lesions that may occur. Exercising daily is conducive to removing toxins more quickly, as it helps your systems function to release more toxins through the skin.

Positive effects of detoxification can include weight loss, increased energy levels, a sunnier disposition and a more productive digestive system. If you have certain conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), you may notice an alleviation in symptoms. Performing a body detox twice a year is healthy, but detoxes should not be done back to back -- allow your body the time it needs to adjust. One detox every two to three months is healthiest.

Liver Cleansing With Apple Cider

The liver is one of the most important organs in your body. Located in the upper right part of the abdominal chamber, the liver filters out toxins and waste products from the blood. Additionally, it manufactures proteins, metabolizes fats, stores essential nutrients and carbohydrates, and makes and secretes bile, which aids in the proper digestion of food. To keep your liver in good working condition, the first thing to do is adopt a healthy lifestyle. Eat wholesome foods, drink alcohol moderately or not at all and avoid toxic substances. Many natural health proponents such as Dr. Linda Page, author of "Healthy Healing's Detoxification," also recommend a routine "liver cleanse" to help rid it of accumulated toxins and recharge its efficiency. One of the most common and widely praised methods of liver cleansing is the use of apple cider vinegar (ACV), which Dr. Page calls a "powerful remedy for resolving liver stagnation and indigestion." Practitioners of liver cleansing say ACV's combination of vitamins, minerals and alkalinity help rid the liver of harmful substances and help keep the body's pH levels from becoming too acidic, a condition that can make a person more vulnerable to disease. Here are some ways to use apple cider vinegar to cleanse your liver.

Make an apple cider vinegar tonic. Mix 1 or 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar with 6 to 8 ounces of water. Add a natural sweetener like honey if you wish. Use this as a daily tonic and drink three times a day before meals.

Commit to a short liver detox twice a year, one day in the fall and one day in the spring. The night before "detox day," have a light supper that's easy to digest such as steamed vegetables and fish. On the detox day itself, you'll basically follow a liquid fast, ingesting only vegetable juices, broths, apple juice, green tea and other healthful liquids. Upon rising and before bed, take the basic tonic described in step one but increase its strength by adding an additional tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. For the week following the detox, eat only 100 percent fresh foods (e.g., fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, legumes, nonfat dairy and so forth). During the fast, you may experience some side effects as a result of toxins leaving your body, including headaches, nausea and lightheadedness. Plan accordingly so you're not required to do any high exertion-type activities, try to get some sunshine and aim for some light exercise like walking or stretching.

Maintain good liver health by enjoying a cup of liver cleansing tea. Mix 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to 1 cup of hot water and sweeten with honey or maple syrup. Drink 1 cup daily.

Homemade Antibiotic Cream

Homemade remedies can bring relief inexpensively. No additives and the use of ingredients purchased from trusted and local sources make these remedies part of a "green" lifestyle. Antibiotic herbs and essential oils can be located in reference books like Maggie Tisserand's "The Magic and Power of Lavender" or Marcel Lavabre's "Aromatherapy Workbook."

Base Ingredients

Homemade creams are created using beeswax, lanolin and olive oil (or other vegetable oils like avocado, almond or jojoba) as a base. Beeswax and lanolin can be found in health food stores. For a basic recipe, use two drams of beeswax, one-half ounce of lanolin, one and one-half ounces of olive or other vegetable oil, and heat together over a low flame.

Beeswax may be a problem for those with pollen allergies because it can contain traces of pollen. To create a cream without beeswax, purchase a premade, fragrance-free cream base from a cosmetic supplier or use an unscented thick lotion or cream from a local retailer. Body butter bases are another alternative. Premade bases may have preservatives in them to extend their shelf-life.

Antibiotic Ingredients

Choose a single essential oil or herb that has antibiotic properties to add to the cream. Lavender has a long history as an antibiotic and general healing herb. Lavender is also an easily found plant, sold as an herb and an essential oil. In a separate pot, bring to a boil one and one-half ounces of distilled water and pour the boiling water over a tablespoon of lavender flowers. Strain the mixture and add the liquid to the heated oil base; stir to blend. Add twenty drops of lavender essential oil only when the mixture begins to stiffen.

Consider purchasing lavender or other herbs and oils from local growers and makers. Tea tree, lemon and sandalwood have antibiotic properties too, if lavender is not satisfactory or to your liking.

Storing Creams

Use small plastic or glass jars with lids to store the cream. These jars can be found at craft stores or they can be purchased in large quantities through bottle suppliers. You can use recycled jars by sterilizing them in the dishwasher or by hand, using hot water and mild soap. Rinse thoroughly and air-dry before filling with homemade antibiotic cream. Make only small amounts of the homemade antibiotic cream and use it within several weeks or a month, to avoid the vegetable oil from becoming rancid.
