How to Use Dandelion to Treat Gout

How to Use Dandelion to Treat Gout

Gout is a painful form of arthritis that is caused when uric acid crystals deposit in a joint, causing it to swell. The swollen joint is then painful to touch or move. Dandelion is an herbal remedy that has been successful in treating gout and the conditions that cause it.

Instructions

    1

Get properly diagnosed by a doctor. The only way to diagnose gout confidently is to aspirate some of the fluid in the affected joint and view it under a microscope. This is usually done to confirm a visual diagnosis.

    2

Drink dandelion tea twice a day to keep the kidneys functioning properly. Poor kidney performance is a key contributor to gout, as it's the kidney's job to clear waste from the bloodstream. Dandelion stimulates the kidneys and helps flush urates from your system.

    3

Use dandelion wine to avoid hypertension. Dandelion wine is essentially sweetened white wine infused with dandelion flowers. After curing for at least a couple of weeks, the wine becomes a healthful tonic that can help treat high blood pressure, another contributing factor to gout.

    4

Eat dandelion leaves in salad or cooked in other dishes to get more vitamin C. Dandelion is full of vitamins and nutrients, and it's a great source of vitamin C, which has been shown to decrease uric acid. The less uric acid you have in your system, the fewer uric acid crystals in your joints.

    5

Switch to dandelion coffee to treat gout. Regular coffee has purines in it that the body converts into uric acid. If you can't live without coffee, you can use roasted and ground dandelion leaves to make a coffee substitute.

Benefits of Witch Hazel for Acne

Witch hazel (Hamamelis Virginiana) is a natural product obtained from the leaves and bark of the witch hazel shrub. It offers a number of health benefits, particularly in the treatment of different skin conditions, because it is less likely to cause skin irritation or sensitivity. Its benefits primarily result from the high levels of tannin acid that it contains. In its distilled form, witch hazel has long been recommended as an affordable, accessible and effective topical remedy for acne. Read on to learn some of the ways in which witch hazel is beneficial in the treatment of acne.

Disinfectant

Witch hazel has disinfectant properties. Use on the skin can reduce the bacteria there, helping to prevent inflammation and the formation of acne.

Astringent

The tannin content in witch hazel has strong astringent as well as antioxidant properties. These astringent properties are cleansing to the skin, while minimizing the size of skin pores. Unlike many harsh commercial acne formulations, it is gentle and non-drying when used to tone and cleanse acne-infected or acne-prone skin.

Anti-Irritant

Witch hazel reduces irritation on skin and surface tissue by means of a numbing effect that it has when applied. Furthermore, it helps to prevent any further infection from occurring.

Reduces Swelling and Inflammation

The tannins in witch hazel tighten pores and swollen veins, as well as reduce inflammation. The anti-inflammatory properties are further increased by the flavonoids and procyanadins, as well as resin, in the witch hazel plant.

pH Balance

Many acne treatments can irritate the skin, causing soreness, inflammation and dryness. Witch hazel, being a natural product, is well suited for skin care, because it does not disrupt the pH of the skin, which tends to cause irritation.

Application

Plain witch hazel may be applied to the skin straight from the bottle using cotton balls. It should be applied to the acne-infected skin twice a day. It should never be applied more than three times a day. Witch hazel must never be taken orally.

Witch Hazel Facial Mask

Alternatively, witch hazel can be combined with other healing ingredients to make a soothing, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial face mask. Simply mix a teaspoon of witch hazel and another of tea tree oil with 2 tsp. of honey and a mashed banana or avocado, plus an egg white. Apply to the affected area and leave for 15 minutes before rinsing with cool water and patting dry.

How to Use Essential Oils to Relax Muscles

Oh, those tense and aching muscles! You want some relief, but instead of using commercial ointments and creams, you can create your own muscle-relaxing massage oil to help soothe away the aches and pains.Heres how to select and prepare essential oils that will help to relax your muscles.

Instructions

    1

Choose 100 percent pure essential oils--only these offer healthful benefits. The label will state "100 percent pure." You can find them at health food stores and online. Dont use synthetic oils. They do not have the same benefits.

    2

Buy only sesame oil that is specifically designed to be used for massage. It has been specially refined and prepared for use on the skin. You can get it at health food stores and online.

    3

Select the formula that most appeals to your sense of smell. Most stores have tester bottles, so take a few whiffs and choose the scents you really like. For muscle relaxation, there are multiple formulas to choose from. Here are two: Formula 1: ginger, cypress, juniper berries, black pepper; Formula 2: Peru balsam, thyme, sweet bay, marjoram.

    4

Make Formula 1. To create the massage oil, first mix the essential oil with the sesame oil, which is known as a "carrier" oil. Measure 2 tablespoons (30ml) of sesame oil into the plastic bottle, then add 10 drops of ginger essential oil, 10 of cypress, 5 of juniper berries and 5 of black pepper. Shake well.

    5

Make Formula 2. To create the massage oil, first mix the essential oil with the sesame oil, which is known as a "carrier" oil. Measure 2 tablespoons (30ml) of sesame oil into the plastic bottle, then add 9 drops of Peru balsam essential oil, 8 of thyme, 7 of sweet bay and 6 of marjoram. Shake well.

    6

Massage the formula into the tight muscles and surrounding tissues. Don't be surprised if you feel some "heat," as some of these oils provide that muscle-relaxing warmth.

How to Remove a Stuck Ring With Dental Floss

Heat, humidity, and exercise as simple as walking with your hands swinging at your sides can cause fingers to swell, often tightening a ring that you may be wearing. When the usual methods fail to work, such as using soap and water, cooking oil or petroleum jelly as lubricants to make the finger slippery, dental floss may do the trick. The key is to reduce the swelling so that the ring slides off easily.

Instructions

    1

Cut off a piece of waxed dental floss, about 2 feet.

    2

Slide a few inches of floss under the ring with the short end facing toward your hand, and the long end stretching toward the swollen joint.

    3

Start just above the ring and begin wrapping the long end of the floss securely, (but not too tightly), around your finger. Wrap each row of floss closely against the other, much like winding thread on a spool.

    4

Continue wrapping the finger until the floss extends just a bit above the swollen joint. The purpose is to apply slight pressure to the swollen joint so that you can pull off the ring.

    5

Take hold of the end of the floss that is tucked under the ring. While holding the floss firmly, begin unwinding it gently and slowly. The ring should slip over the swollen knuckle, as you unravel the floss.

    6

Remove the ring, and then unwind the rest of the floss.

How to Make Glycerin Soap Bars

Glycerin is a sweet, sticky by-product of saponification, a process whereby animal fat, lye, vegetable oil and water are blended to make soap. It is a natural emollient and acts as a humectant, meaning it softens and attracts water to the skin. Glycerin is removed from commercial soap because manufacturers prefer to add more lucrative softening agents. Glycerin remains in homemade soap since removing it requires an industrial steam and filter process, but also because many people prefer the natural soothing properties. To make glycerin bars at home, obtain glycerin at a craft store or online through a soap supplier, then melt and pour.

Instructions

    1

Place two 1-lb. blocks of glycerin on the cutting board. Cut each block into small sections with a serrated knife.

    2

Liquefy the glycerin in a double broiler. Place at least 1 inch of water in the lower pot and place cubes in the top portion. Then heat at 155 degrees F until smooth, stirring occasionally.

    3

Prep a flexible, rectangular-shaped mold. Use a bottle to spray a 9-by-6 5/8-by-2 inch food container with an even coat of alcohol to reduce potential air bubbles.

    4

Pour the glycerin liquid into the mold and let it stand for 5 minutes while the air bubbles emerge. Again, spray alcohol over the surface.

    5

Let the soap cool for 24 hours at room temperature to firm or to let the added fragrance, if any, settle (see Tips).

    6

Release the glycerin soap from the mold by pulling the sides back and forth. Flip the container over on wax paper then press the center until the soap separates from the mold.

    7

Cut the glycerin bars with a paring knife. Create clean lines by warming the knife blade in a cup of hot water and keeping the knife straight as opposed to tilted. Make one vertical cut down the center of the block and two evenly spaced horizontal cuts for 6 glycerin bars.

What Are the Benefits of Neti?

What Are the Benefits of Neti?

Neti, also known as jala neti or nasal irrigation, is an ancient Ayurvedic tradition of cleansing the nasal passages with a warm saline solution. Using a vessel that looks like Aladdin's lamp, you pour the solution into one nostril. The sea-salted water rinses out the build-up and bacteria from your mucous lining and drains through your opposite nostril.

Unblock Sinuses

Clearing the nasal passages eliminates the congestion common in colds, allergies and sinus infections. Less mucous also frees breathing and reduces coughing for those with asthma or bronchitis.

Regulate Temperature

Whether your nose tends to be dry or constantly running, jala neti helps regulate its temperature and humidity.

Heighten Senses

Jala neti clears the tear ducts, which can help improve vision. Clearer nasal passages also enhances the senses of hearing, taste and smell.

Better Breathing

With less congestion, your breath becomes deeper and more relaxed.

Alleviate Pain

Jala neti's cooling effect on the brain alleviates migraines, depression and stress.

What Does a Heavy Metal Cleanse Do?

Heavy metals are toxic chemicals and compounds that are found in our environment. These heavy metals can cause harm to the body, especially when they accumulate to toxic levels over time. There are many products available, both online and in health food stores that claim to detoxify the body of these metals. Heavy metal cleanse products should help to remove the heavy metals from the body through metabolic pathways.

Harmful Heavy Metals

Lead can be found in the air from factory emissions, in old paint, in water contaminated through old plumbing pipes, in pesticides and in cigarette smoke. Lead poisoning, called plumbism, is still one of the most common health problems in children in the United States.
Mercury is found in the air and water due to pollutants from chemical plants. This has caused the fish population to become infected with mercury, so when humans ingest the fish, they are also ingesting the mercury. Mercury is also found in amalgam fillings in the teeth, cosmetics and pesticides.
Aluminum is a metal found in antacids, deodorants and aluminum cookware. Other metals of concern include arsenic, copper, cadmium, nickel, iron and uranium.

Symptoms of Heavy Metal Toxicity

The body cannot dispose of heavy metals so they are stored in the circulatory system, lymphatic system, fatty tissue and vital organs including the brain and liver. As the levels increase, the body can experience symptoms including headaches, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, digestive problems, high blood pressure and depression.

What is a Heavy Metal Cleanse?

There are a variety of heavy metal cleanse products available on the market. They range from pills, to drops to foot pads. They are generally a mixture of herbs, amino acids and antioxidants. The heavy metal cleanse products help to denature the toxins to aid in their elimination while also protecting and promoting normal cellular functions.

How to Cleanse

The cleansing process usually takes anywhere from 1 to 3 months depending on the product used and the level of metals in the body. The cleansing products detoxify better and more efficiently when the patient also drinks plenty of water and adheres to a healthy and preferably organic diet. Those wishing to perform a heavy metal cleanse should also replace any amalgam fillings with new composite fillings.

Detection

Doctor, natural healthcare providers and chiropractors can all perform tests on urine, hair or saliva samples that can determine the level of buildup of heavy metals in the body. There are also home test kits available, but the tests run by a professional will result in more reliable results.

HPV Home Cures

If you're struggling with human papillomavirus (HPV), you may be seeking some at-home remedies to alleviate your symptoms, particularly the genital warts associated with some types of HPV. Incorporating some at-home techniques, and adding vitamin supplements to your diet, can help you find relief from HPV.

Help for HPV at Home

To help treat genital warts associated with HPV, your might find relief from soaking in an oat bath. "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Women" says soaking in an oatmeal bath could be soothing for itchiness associated with genital warts. Over-the-counter products, such as Aveeno's bath treatment, use a finely powdered oatmeal called colloidal oatmeal and won't clog your drain.

Keep the area affected by genital warts clean and dry. Bathe daily and wash the area with a mild soap. Gently but thoroughly pat yourself dry with a towel. If your doctor prescribes a wart cream, wash the medication off after four to six hours, as the powerful medications could also cause skin irritation and burn.

Apply castor oil to the affected area three times a day, preferably after bathing. Proponents of this method say genital warts are cleared within 30 days of starting castor oil treatment.

Use apple cider vinegar to clear up your warts. Tear a cotton ball so that it matches the size of your wart. Soak the cotton ball in apple cider vinegar, and squeeze any excess off. Next, place an adhesive bandage over the cotton ball to make sure it stays in place. Do this daily, and you can expect the wart to disappear within six weeks.

Use fresh garlic to get rid of genital warts. First, cut a thin slice of fresh garlic. Place the slice of garlic directly on the wart and use an adhesive bandage to keep it in place. Expect results within three weeks.

Vitamins

Sometimes, HPV in women can lead to cervical dysplasia, a condition in which abnormal, even cancerous, cells appear in the cervix. To protect yourself from this complication of HPV, get enough vitamin A, riboflavin, folate (B vitamins) and ascorbate (vitamin C). According to a study at the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, women deficient in these vitamins have a higher risk of developing cervical dysplasia. Vitamin A can also build up your immune system and fight off genital warts. Take 5,000 units of vitamin A, 1.7mg riboflavin, 400mg folate and 60mg of vitamin C daily.

Binaural Frequency Techniques

Binaural Frequency Techniques

Binaural beats help facilitate meditation, induce sleep, heighten energy levels, increase creativity and improve focus after only a few minutes through the phenomenon of brainwave entrainment. Which state is invoked depends on what kind of binaural beats are used, how they are listened to and what the user is doing at the time of listening.

How to Listen

Listeners use a variety of ways to listen to binaural beats. Using headphones achieves the best results, but some users prefer to listen through speakers. In addition, listeners can vary the duration and context of listening. For instance, some people may want to listen to an energy-inducing waveform for a few minutes just before engaging in a challenging activity, or, perhaps, during a break as an aid to reduce recovery time. Conversely, listeners can use binaural beats for long periods while engaged in a stressful situation as a way of staying calm and unfettered.

Types of Waveforms

To create a specific state in a person using binaural beats, the user must play a waveform that is associated with the desired state of consciousness. Gamma waves are associated with high abstract thought and problem-solving skills. Beta waves occur during states of intense focus, arousal and anxious preparation. Alpha waves can signal pre-sleep activity or a relaxed feeling while still awake. Theta waves are present in dream-states, during meditation and a state of strong creativity. Delta waves are the slowest waveform in the brain and occur primarily in the deepest stages of sleep.

Disguising Binaural Beats

Some people find the sound of straight binaural beats annoying or distracting. For those individuals, it is usually best to mask the sound with a more pleasant or more familiar noise, or light music. Nature sounds are very popular, such as waves crashing on the beach, crickets chirping at night or a light rainstorm.

Misconceptions

The effects of binaural beats are subtle and gentle, not drastic and abrasive like the effects of a drug. This is because brain wave entrainment does not force the brain to create a particular type of brainwave; it simply encourages it. It is common for people not to notice the effects of binaural beats at first. Yet, over time, the benefits usually become more apparent.

Counteracting Psychological Problems

Binaural beats can quickly produce a calming effect in the user. Many people with addiction or anxiety problems keep a CD player on hand with the very tracks intended to induce relaxation and reduce the effects of a manic state or drug craving.

What Is Kava?

What Is Kava?

The plant known as Piper methysticum is part of the pepper plant family and is also used for the tranquilizing drink kava. The kava plant's main ingredient is kavalactone, which can be used to help relieve stress, anxiety, insomnia, social anxiety and migraines while keeping the mind alert.

Origins

The Piper methysticum plant, thought to have originated in Oceania, was made into a herbal ceremonial drink, inducing relaxation. Kava plants are now widely used within the Western Pacific. Captain Cook's voyages to the Pacific not only opened new coastlines to the world but it was because of these voyages that the Piper methysticum plant became known widely around the world.

Roots

The roots of the Piper methysticum plant are what is used to make the herbal drink. The roots are compressed to allow the natural fluid to be released from the roots. The liquid released is then mixed with water and consumed immediately. The taste of the kava drink is one of sour dirt and soil.

Kavalactones

Kavalactones are the active ingredients found within the kava plant's roots. With 18 types of kavalactones found so far, the tranquilizing drink is better made using the roots only. Kavalactones contain a condensation product of an alcohol group and a carboxylic acid group within each molecule (see Resources.) The kavalactones are passed through to the blood stream from the stomach and then travel to the brain.

Short Term Effects

Kava can induce sleep and relaxation, but it also can cause numbness in the throat and mouth, loss of muscle control, nausea and red eyes. Kava also has long-term affects that might cause permanent damage to an individual's body and mind.

Warning

The idea of drinking a natural product that could actually alleviate stress and other medical types of conditions can sound tempting, but kava can bring long-term effects such as destroying parts of the nervous system, loss of balance, physical trembling and can also destroy the functions of the liver and produce scaly or yellowish skin (see Resources).

Trigger Points for Sciatic Nerve Pain

Trigger Points for Sciatic Nerve Pain

Sciatic pain is often described as some of the worst nerve pain imaginable, just short of a root canal in intensity. More often than not, nerve pain is caused by nothing more than an irritated muscle, and can be fixed as easily as leaning against a tennis ball or pressing your thumb into the side of your hip.

Definition

A trigger point is an adhesion or collection of toxins in the muscle. They can cause pain and limit movement within the muscle. They are released with direct pressure, either with a finger or thumb, or with a tennis ball, "T-Bar," or "Knobby" tool used by massage professionals.

Significance

The sciatic nerve runs between the ischium (pelvic bone) and the piriformis muscle. When the piriformis muscle has a trigger point, the muscle becomes irritated. This puts pressure on the sciatic nerve, causing pain.

Locating a Trigger Point

Most likely, there will be a main trigger point and several "satellite" trigger points. The main point will feel like a small knot or pebble along the muscle, and will cause pain in another part of the body. Find and release the main trigger point before addressing the satellite points.

Sciatic Pain

The trigger point which typically causes sciatic pain is located along the piriformis, deep to the gluteus muscles. Pressing with your thumb, you should feel a tender spot. Once you have found the most painful of these spots, press with your thumb or device until the pain measures a four or five on a pain scale where 10 is excruciating pain and zero is no pain at all. Hold for 15 seconds or until the pain subsides. If it does not subside, repeat. Continue attacking trigger points as you find them.

Warnings

If the trigger point returns, or you cannot break it up after several tries, you may need to go to a massage therapist. The main trigger point may be eluding you, or your own pain tolerances may not allow you to push with enough force. You may also be unable to attack the trigger point at the right angle.

Substitutes for Preparation H

Hemorrhoids. No one likes to talk about them--those enlarged, painful blood vessels in an around the anal area. But according to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, about 50 percent of the population over age 50 finds itself with hemorrhoids. And for sufferer, the only question is how to relieve hemorrhoids.

If you have hemorrhoids, you've probably used the old stand-by for relief--Preparation H. But did you know that a substitute for Preparation H can work as well, or even better? There are also methods that can help prevent hemorrhoids.

Preparation H

There are several Preparation H medications including ointment, cooling gel, medicated wipes, suppositories, anti-itch cream and maximum strength cream. Each product, with the exception of the anti-itch cream and the medicated wipes contains Phenylephrine HCl as its active ingredient. Phenylephrine is commonly used to relieve stuffy noses, and sinus and ear symptoms that are caused by colds, allergies or flu. It works on hemorrhoids because it decreases swelling in tissues.

The active ingredient in the Preparation H anti-itch cream is hydrocortisone, and in the medicated wipes it is witch hazel--a known natural cure for hemorrhoids.

Causes of Hemorrhoids

According to MayoClinic.com, the basic cause of hemorrhoids is increased pressure on the lower rectum. This can occur with the following:

    Straining on the toilet
Sitting on the toilet for extended periods of time
    Chronic diarrhea
    Chronic constipation
    Obesity
    Pregnancy
    Anal intercourse
    Hereditary tendency

Substitutes for Preparation H

One great substitute for Preparation H is witch hazel. Witch hazel is the extract from the Hamamelis virginiana plant, and is usually mixed in a solution with alcohol. Tucking a cotton ball soaked in witch hazel up close to the affected area can relieve pain and itching and reduce swelling, according to MotherNature.com .

A sitz bath can also work wonders because it increases blood flow to the area, expediting healing. Sit in a few inches of warm water with your knees elevated for several minutes to a half hour, several times a day.

Natural Ways to End Hemorrhoids

The natural cure for hemorrhoids begins with taking proper care of your digestive system so that bowel movements are easy. Drink lots of fluids, especially water, and make sure you're getting plenty of fiber from fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

To keep your digestive system moving smoothly, take psyllium with juice or water every day. Note that you must keep your liquid intake high when you are using psyllium.

Consuming a diet that is fiber-rich and provides plenty of water will help prevent hemorrhoids from developing.

When to see your doctor

If you have a hemorrhoid that is bleeding a lot, as in more than just a bit when you have a bowel movement, you'll need to see your doctor. Sometimes, the only way to relieve hemorrhoids is to surgically remove them.

Benefits of Maitake Mushrooms

Maitake mushrooms, used in Japan for centuries because of their health attributes, have more recently been scientifically proven to contain beneficial substances. While best known for their effectiveness against cancer, maitake mushrooms also have shown potential for numerous other conditions.

Features

Maitake mushrooms contain grifolan, a substance that stimulates the activity of macrophages--known as the "heavy artillery" of the immune system.

Benefits

In a non-randomized clinical study published in February/March 1996 Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients, a maitake extract was found to be effective against leukemia and stomach and bone cancers. The study had 165 subjects.

Function

In their study "Mushroom biology and mushroom products," researchers Hiroaki Nanba and Keiko Kubo found that a substance in maitake mushrooms, x-fraction, has abilities to regulate glucose levels, which can help people with type 2 diabetes.

Prevention/Solution

Physicians in Japan have found maitake mushrooms to be effective in reducing blood pressure and blood lipids, important factors in lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Effects

By stimulating proper digestion and minimizing food stagnation, maitake mushrooms help regulate the stomach and intestines.

Buckeye for Arthritis

Buckeye for Arthritis

So named for its resemblance to the large brown eye of a male deer, the buckeye nut grows on tall trees throughout the middle United States. The nut is dangerous to eat, but folklore abounds about the magical ability of the buckeye nut--worn close to the body to ward off pain from osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

The Buckeye Tree

There are two varieties of buckeye tree. The Ohio variety, Aesculus glabra, grows 30 to 50 feet high and releases slightly spiny seed pods containing up to five smooth brown nuts. It is also called the fetid buckeye or stinking buckeye because of the unpleasant smell released when the leaves are bruised. Its lightweight wood was prized in the central U.S. for its workability. The yellow variety, Aesculus octandra, grows to 90 feet tall and releases smooth, bumpy seed pods containing up to five nuts. Buckeye nuts are toxic and inedible.

The Buckeye Nut

The buckeye nut is large, spherical, slightly lumpy, smooth and medium to dark brown. Some say it resembles a human male testicle, which is part of its folkloric value. It is not to be confused with its cousin, the chestnut, which is edible, and the horse chestnut, which can be processed for oral consumption as a nutritional supplement. Chestnuts and horse chestnuts are slightly flat on one side.

Folk Uses

Among some Americans, the buckeye nut is a good luck charm. Folklore says, that carried in a pocket, the buckeye increases male sexual potency. Some people also drill a hole into it, fill it with liquid mercury and seal it with wax to bring luck in games of chance (Mercury was the Roman god of games of chance and sleight of hand). Others wrap it in a dollar bill and carry it to attract monetary wealth.

Buckeye for Arthritis

The buckeye nut has no medicinal value for arthritis; you simply carry it in your pocket or wear it around your neck to prevent arthritis or ward off the pain once arthritis does develop. Buckeye in any oral or topical preparation is toxic and can cause fatal poisoning.

An Alternative

While you cannot use buckeye medicinally, one of its close relatives presents an alternative. Horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum L.) can be processed into a dietary supplement--in a very specific dose of 300mg daily. There is limited evidence beyond folklore to suggest that horse chestnut can treat arthritis symptoms. Certainly, there is no cure for arthritis. If you do decide to try horse chestnut for arthritis, make sure your doctor knows about this and all other supplements you are taking.

Home Remedy for Scabies in Humans

Scabies are a type of parasitic mite that are highly contagious and will spread until all of the mites as well as the eggs they lay are killed by a treatment. Scabies survive up to four days away from a human body, so it is possible to catch them from someone's clothing or bedding. Scabies is traditionally treated with a prescription anti-parasitic medicine, known as a scabicide. However, there are also natural home remedies that are also used to treat this infestation.

Drumstick Leaves

You may have to search around a bit to find drumstick leaves as they are not commonly found in your local grocer's produce section but may be available at a specialty or gourmet grocer or garden shop. Take approximately 400 to 500 g of juice from the drumstick leaves by extraction method.

Mix the same amount of sesame seed oil with the drumstick leaves juice and boil the mixture until the water has boiled out. Allow to cool before applying daily over infected areas. There is an anti-microbial action that works as an insecticidal and helps to cure scabies.

Natural Remedies

Several natural remedy products are said to be a home remedy for scabies. One is an Indian oil called Margosa oil, which is an anti-fungal as well as an anti-bacterial. Menthol has cooling properties and is available in products like peppermint, ginger mint and mountain mint to cure scabies.

Aloe Vera is available in a lotion, cream or gel, and can be applied topically to cure scabies. Gently massage any of these natural remedies into the area to relieve itching without any side effects. As with any home remedy you choose, watch closely for improvements or discontinue use and consult a medical professional.

Gentle Momentum

For certain, when bursitis strikes and topical solutions along with oral directives provide some relief, it's time to add some gentle momentum to the area that's causing the problem. This will help to increase the circulation and blood flow and promote additional healing. The key is to recognize your body's limitations during the healing process and not to push too hard to return to normal, fully functional use of the area that's injured.

If the problem is your shoulder or elbow, try a few minutes of exercise by swinging the joint. Dr. Edward Resnick of Temple University Hospital advises that you don't want to overstretch but you also don't want to get a stiff shoulder. Resnick suggests use a chair and lean forward with your good arm, allowing the problem area to swing in circles clockwise and counterclockwise, side to side and back and forth.

Over-the-Counter Remedies for Estrogen Dominance

As people age their reproductive hormones change to reflect the fact that the body is no longer geared up for procreation. Testosterone, estrogen, progesterone and DHEA are all interconnected in a balancing act that often seems to become unbalanced after 40, with estrogen taking center stage. While more press is given to the plight of women in this age group, men also feel the effects of estrogen dominance.

Progesterone Cream

Allopathic doctors generally prescribe a synthetic (progestin) or animal derived (Premarin) progesterone replacement to help women deal with the symptoms of estrogen dominance at the onset of menopause. Much has been said lately about the relationship between these supplements and the increase in incidence of breast cancer and heart disease in women. Dr. John Lee (drjohnlee.com), a pioneer in bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, suggested that women and men who have symptoms of estrogen dominance (e.g., weight gain, thinning hair, itchy skin, irritability, etc.), should boost their progesterone levels by using plant derived progesterone cream. You should check the label to make sure the cream contains at least 20 mg USP progesterone per dose. Men benefit from using progesterone cream because progesterone is used by the body to build the other steroid hormones such as testosterone. Men may want to look for a progesterone product that also contains Siberian ginseng, as this combination may help if you experience age-related impotence.

DIM

A relatively new treatment you can purchase over-the-counter is called DIM (diindolylmethane). This substance is found naturally in cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, Brussels sprouts and broccoli. In vegetable form, your body can use DIM to help you metabolize estrogen so that it functions more beneficially. DIM in its pure form, as a supplement, is not really usable by the human body. However, researcher Dr. Michael D. Zelig's patented the brand name BioResponse DIM, which has been specially formulated to be more absorbable. This brand has been shown to aid estrogen metabolism so that phytoestrogens such as soy will not be as likely to create estrogen dominance. According to a study done at the David and Alice Jurist Institute for Medical Research in Hackensack, N.J., Zelig's formula also has great antioxidant activity, which may help lower the risk of some cancers (see resources).

Using progesterone cream in conjunction with BioResponse DIM can be a good strategy for both women and men to help them balance out estrogen dominance and manage their symptoms.

How to Measure the PPM of Colloidal Silver

How to Measure the PPM of Colloidal Silver

People who use alternative medicine learn about the healing properties of colloidal silver and see it as a way to improve their health. Colloidal silver generated with home generators can produce varying strengths of ionized silver measured in parts per million or PPM. While you have options in measuring the potency of your colloidal silver, you should know that home methods of testing are less than exact. Laboratory methods provide a little better accuracy, but samples from the same batch sent to different labs often measure different levels according to SilverMedicine.org.

Instructions

    1

Insert a TDS (total dissolved solids) or PWT (pure water test) meter into the distilled water you will use to generate your colloidal silver up to the designated maximum level line. To properly produce quality colloidal silver, the meter should read no higher than .2 ppm. Ideally, the meter should read 0 ppm. (If you are unsure of the accuracy of your meter, use the test solution sold by the manufacturer to calibrate or recalibrate your meter according to the manufacturer's instructions.) Clean your container, add fresh distilled water and retest if the reading is too high. Write down your beginning ppm level for comparison at the end of the process.

    2

Turn on your generator and begin your electrolysis process. Do not add salt to the water to increase conductivity. This will skew your measurements at the end of the process.

    3

Check your water with a laser pen every 30 minutes if using a low-power, battery-operated colloidal generator. Look for the Tyndale effect in the water as you shine the laser pen directly through the water. If microscopic particles of silver are present in the water, you will be able to see the laser beam in the water reflecting off the silver. Check the ppm levels on the TDS when you notice first faint presence of the Tyndale effect.

    4

Continue your electrolysis process until your silver solution reaches the level you desire, using the same process as in Step 4. Check the water every 10 to 15 minutes once you detect the Tyndale effect because the conductivity of the water increases and the particles will accumulate more rapidly and may vary in size.

    5

Continue your electrolysis process until your silver solution reaches the level you desire, using the same process as in Step 4. Check the water every 10 to 15 minutes once you detect the Tyndale effect, as the conductivity of the water increases and the particles will accumulate more rapidly and may vary in size.

    6

Allow the solution to stand for 60 minutes and retest to get a final reading.

Ways to Relieve Chest Pressure from Anxiety

Having an anxiety attack is extremely stressful, causing muscles to quickly become tense, sometimes to the point of spasm. When this happens to muscles in the chest, the pressure and pain can move down your arm and up your neck so you think you're having a heart attack. Learning relaxation and breathing techniques can be valuable in helping you calm the anxiety and relax.

Anxiety-Related Chest Pains

The body reacts to stress by tightening muscles. Extremely stressful events, such as an anxiety attack, can cause severe muscle tension. Some sufferers experience intense tightness and pain or pressure in the chest, neck and down the arm similar to those of a heart attack. The most common response is panic.

Fight or Flight

The fight-or-flight response is the body's most basic instinctual reaction when the mind perceives danger or threat. The fight-or-flight response is literally your body's way of preparing to fight or flee the stressful situation to defend your life. The fight-or-flight response triggers a series of biological events. Your body begins releasing adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol through the bloodstream. Usually, you are too busy responding to consider how your body feels. However, if you are sitting quietly watching television and your heart suddenly starts pounding and you feel hyper, you shake, your chest tightens with pain, and your heart flutters irregularly, it can be terrifying.

Internal Dialogue

What you say to yourself during an anxiety attack determines whether you begin to calm down or panic more. It can be challenging to control your internal dialogue, but telling yourself that you are having a heart attack, need to get to the emergency room, and are going to die actually intensifies your symptoms. Rather, by making a conscious effort to tell yourself that you are okay, not having a heart attack, and just experiencing anxiety, you can begin to calm down. Soon, the muscle tension and pressure in your chest, arm and neck will begin to dissipate.

Breathing Techniques

The first line of defense during an anxiety attack is to breathe. This requires that you focus. One breathing technique that will aid you in calming down is simple to use even if you are struggling with panic. Begin by inhaling to the count of 2. Exhale to the count of 2. Inhale to the count of 2. Exhale to the count of 4. Inhale to the count of 2. Exhale to the count of 6. Inhale to the count of 2. Exhale to the count of 8. Inhale to the count of 2. Exhale to the count of 10. This is also a useful technique to use when you feel an anxiety or panic attack coming on.

Muscle Relaxation

It is essential to relax tense muscles during an anxiety or panic attack. Continue controlled and deliberate breathing. Sit or lay in a neutral position that is comfortable. Focus your concentration on the sensation of each muscle group. Add imagery, such as resting in the sun on the beach or ice cream melting in the sun. For each muscle group, tense the muscles, hold and then relax. Start from your toes and work up. If you are seated, start by dropping your chin to your chest and lifting slowly (do not make circles with your head). Continue through your entire body to your toes. By the time you reach the last muscle group, your muscles should be relaxed and the chest pains gone.

How to Train in Bach Flower Therapy

How to Train in Bach Flower Therapy

Bach Flower Therapy employs Bach Flower Remedies to treat emotional symptoms that may lead to illness. This type of therapy falls under the category of complementary and alternative medicine. The health care professional who employs flower essence must learn to determine the emotional condition of the individual and find the remedy or remedy combination best suited to return that person to health and emotional balance. Training in flower essence is available both informally and formally.

Instructions

Pursuing Informal Training

    1

Read and learn about the Bach Flower Remedies. Read material written by Dr. Edward Bach including: "Heal Thyself; An explanation of the real cause and cure of disease," "The 12 Healers" and the "Bach Remedies Repertory."

Read "Bach Flower Therapy: Theory and Practice" by Mechthild Scheffer, a textbook on Bach Flower Therapy. Chapter topics include: how the remedies work, finding the right remedy, extensive information about each remedy and how to use them in practice.

Read "Flower Essences and Vibrational Healing" by Gurudas. This excellent flower remedy textbook includes the Original Bach Flower Remedies and many other remedies discovered since Dr. Bach's death. The textbook begins with information on the history of flower essences. A step-by-step guide for preparing and using flower essences is included, as well as information on how to combine flower remedies with other healing modalities. Techniques for diagnosing ailments and amplifying the remedies are explained. Twelve cross-reference tables help practitioners compare and contrast a variety of commercial flower remedies.

    2

Talk to flower essence practitioners. Ask questions and take advantage of classes or trainings they may offer.

    3

Take advantage of Internet resources. There are many Internet sites that provide information on how to use flower remedies. The Holistic Medicine Resource Center has a lengthy list of resources that include training information and resources.

Pursuing Formal Training

    4

Complete classroom or online classes. Online, correspondence and classroom options are available. Complementary Healthcare in England offers online and distance training for their certification program. Several U.S. schools offer Bach Flower training as a part of their natural health curriculum. Bastyr University, California Institute of the Healing Arts & Sciences and University of Bridgeport College of Natural Medicine are just three schools that include flower remedy training in their curriculum.

    5

Take the Bach Center Level One course. Level One is available as a correspondence program. This introductory course will provide the learner with the basic information necessary to employ flower remedies. Level Two and Level Three training must be obtained at the Bach Centre in Mount Vernon, England or taken from an approved trainer.

    6

Complete the Flower Essence Society (FES) advance training at their base in Nevada City, CA. Their certification training includes both Bach Flower Remedies and remedies in the FES line. Their four-day training is for practitioners who already have a basic knowledge of flower remedies. Complete the optional plant study assignment, the certification program and the personal review from the heads of FES. Successful completion of the program culminates in a certificate and the opportunity to register as a certified practitioner.

Apprenticeship Training

    7

Look for an experienced practitioner who might allow you to apprentice. Apprenticeship training can take place on an informal or formal basis. Not all practitioners are open to taking apprentices, so seek out someone who likes to teach and share wisdom.

The preceptor/apprentice relationship is less complicated when both are in the same geographical location and when personalities are compatible. If you plan to certify, choose a preceptor who has worked with the same program. Check with the certifying organization to see if they can provide names of suitable candidates in your area.

    8

Spell out the specifics of the apprenticeship agreement. Some preceptors will want to be paid for their time. Others will be happy to share their knowledge and expertise freely if the apprentice takes on part of the work load. It is very unusual for an apprenticeship to be paid, so expect some monetary outlay for supplies, travel and incidentals at the very least. Some preceptors may require some experience and basic knowledge prior to the beginning of the apprenticeship.

Some preceptors expect an apprentice to bring in clients who are willing to work with a student under supervision. This may take some time to accomplish, but there are benefits to the student. The student will have the beginnings of a client base at the end of the apprenticeship, and those clients understand from the beginning they are working with a student and that they have the security of knowing an experienced professional is observing and overseeing their case.

    9

Clarify the time commitment, skills to be covered and how and when you will have access to people to work with. Early in an apprenticeship, you might spend more time watching and learning than interacting with clients. As you have more knowledge and experience with flower remedies, you will have opportunity to work with clients. Ask questions and take notes. You are there to learn.

    10

Keep accurate paperwork. Take notes as you learn to make and work with the flower remedies. Note which remedies work well together. Keep progress notes on clients. Ask clients for feedback on your work. If you will need to document your apprenticeship experience, do that as you go through the process, not at the end. Know what kind of documentation you will need, and have it ready when you finish your apprenticeship.

    11

Take every opportunity to learn. Cross-train with other professionals when possible. Not everyone does things the same, and you can learn quite a bit when you observe how practitioners differ. Thank those who are willing to provide you with this opportunity and make the most of it. Then, once you are through, return the favor and teach others if you can. It will help cement your skills, make you consider how and why you do things, and bless a new learner with the wealth of your experience and knowledge.

Lime Juice to Get Rid of Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are thin scars that range in color from purple to white and usually appear during pregnancy, adolescent growth spurts and sudden weight gain. Although there is no scientific evidence to support the use of lime juice to get rid of stretch marks, lime juice is considered one of the home remedies for stretch marks.

Function

Because lime juice has some natural bleaching properties, lime juice may be able to fade the color of the stretch marks. Stretch marks usually fade over time, but lime juice may speed the process.

Mixtures

Always dilute lime juice with water when using lime juice to get rid of stretch marks. Home remedies for stretch marks that include lime juice may also include aloe vera, dandelion, hydrogen peroxide, oatmeal or rosehips.

Time Frame

Applying a diluted mixture of lime juice to dark stretch marks for several weeks may help lighten stretch marks more quickly.

Warning

According to the Texas Medical Center, applying lime juice to your skin can cause discoloration and rash when skin is also in contact with sunlight.

Considerations

There are other home remedies for stretch marks that may be more effective than using lime juice to get rid of stretch marks. Other home remedies for stretch marks include apricot scrub, Vitamin E oil and shea butter.

Natural Home Remedies for Yeast Infections

According to the NIH (National Institutes of Health), most women will experience a yeast infection---an overgrowth of the normal bacteria Candida albicans--at some time in their lives. While yeast infection is not classified as a sexually transmitted disease, up to 15 percent of men will suffer the itching and rash associated with this condition following intercourse with an affected partner. Fortunately, a visit to the doctor is not always necessary. Yeast infection may be effectively treated with natural home remedies.

Tea Tree Oil Cream

Tea tree oil contains antibacterial and antifungal properties, making it an excellent natural home remedy for yeast infection. Apply tea tree oil cream once a day to the affected area.

Tea Tree Oil

Pure tea tree oil may also be used for yeast infection. Coat the tip of a tampon with personal lubricant or petroleum jelly, then apply a few drops of tea tree oil and insert into the vagina once a day.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Use apple cider vinegar as a natural home remedy for yeast infection. Pour 1 cup of ACV into a warm bath nightly until symptoms subside.

Yogurt

The acidophilus in yogurt effectively fights yeast overgrowth. Coat a tampon in plain, unsweetened yogurt and insert into the vagina nightly until the yeast infection is gone.

Prevention/Solution

Sugar feeds a yeast infection. Avoiding all sugar in your diet until the infection has cleared up is a helpful, natural home remedy for yeast.

Bentonite Lifespan

Bentonite Lifespan

Bentonite clay is a substance long known for its healing properties and purported ability to increase longevity in human beings. In its natural state, the lifespan is not accurately recorded, but because it is a mineral derived from volcanic ash the lifespan could be millions of years.

History

Bentonite was used by Native Americans as a cleaning product. As early settlers began to trek west, other uses for the mineral appeared: water-proofing roofs, greasing wheels and treating inflammation in horse's hooves. The name bentonite is taken from Fort Benton in Wyoming.

Function

Treated bentonite is used in cosmetics, healing practices, water purification and wine fining, just to name a few uses.

Time Frame

Bentonite is a naturally occurring mineral, and when in its natural environment, it may have a lifespan of millions of years. It may also have a long shelf-life as a cosmetic product but other forms of processing used may shorten the lifespan.

How to Use Garlic to Cure a Yeast Infection

Are you looking for an alternative to standard yeast infection treatments? Vaginal yeast infection symptoms include itching, burning and discharge. Such infections are common when taking antibiotics. Garlic is nature's yeast-fighting antibiotic. You can control the dose of garlic by cutting small slits in the garlic clove or cutting it in half for the maximum dose of garlic. Start treatment at the first sign of a yeast infection, before symptoms get out of hand. You might also choose to use a garlic oil softgel. It is best to do this treatment at night, so that it does not disrupt your daily activities. You may taste garlic while doing this treatment.

Instructions

    1

Remove the papery thin layer of skin from the garlic. Leave only the inside clove. If you are using a garlic oil softgel, skip the garlic preparation.

    2

Sew a string through the garlic clove to make removal easy. Carefully, tie a knot to secure the string.

    3

Insert garlic into the vagina. Place it as close to the cervix as possible. It cannot get lost. If it burns, the dose was probably too much for your sensitive, irritated skin. Try another garlic clove with smaller cuts, or use a garlic oil softgel.

    4

After several hours, remove the garlic over a toilet. Take a shower to remove any lingering garlic odor.

    5

Repeat the treatment the following night, if needed.

Bromide Detox for a Bad Headache

Bromide Detox for a Bad Headache

Bromides are naturally occurring chemicals that have been used for medicinal treatment for the last century. They also have been a common ingredient in many products, ranging from pesticides to flame-retardants. Bromides tend to stay in the body anywhere from one to two weeks. Too much bromide can result in bromism, and symptoms include bad headaches, nausea and irritability. There are a few ways to clear the body of bromides.

Chemical sensitivity

If you are on a medication that has bromide in it, your headaches may be the result of a chemical sensitivity. Your body may be reacting to the bromide and causing your headaches. Talk to your doctor about potential bromide sensitivity and see if you can use an alternative medication.

Iodine and bromide

Your body needs iodine to function. Sometimes too much bromide results in a decrease of iodine and bromism results. A technique called salt-loading can clear bromism symptoms: drink a solution of tsp. of unprocessed sea salt with 1/2 cup of warm water. Then drink 12 to 16 oz. of plain water. Repeat the process every 30 to 45 minutes until you being to urinate frequently. Stop drinking the solution when you begin frequent urination.

You can also reduce any iodine consumption for three days. Iodine is found commonly in iodized table salts. Vitamin C has also proved helpful in bromide detox. Take several grams of vitamin C spaced through the day with increased water intake.

Avoiding bromide

Many products in your home and environment contain bromide. Reducing or eliminating your exposure can reduce or eliminate bromide-related headaches. Products bromide can be found in include, but are not limited, to: bromated flours; bromated vegetable oil (BVO) in food and beverages; certain asthma inhalers (talk to your pharmacist or physician about non-bromide inhaler options); items coated in bromide fire retardants such as carpet, bedding and furniture; toys, electronics and cars with polybrominated diphenal ethers (PBDE); cosmetics with bromide compounds; and some perm chemicals. Being around these items may cause bad headaches.

Caution

Talk to your doctor about your bad headaches. You should never begin any home-care program without your doctors consent. Discuss your full health history and concerns about bromide with your doctor.

How to Use "The Secret" for Perfect Health

How to Use

Holistic health brings us great insight into the mind body connection. By focusing our minds and energy on positive thoughts, we are better able to foster healing in our bodies. Principles taught in Rhonda Byrne's book "The Secret" mirror this philosophy and are of great use when dealing with sickness. Follow the steps below and begin to attract health to your mind, body and soul.

Instructions

    1

Use your imagination and believe you are in perfect health. Imagine how a healthy body would feel and hold onto such feelings. Recall a past time when you were in good health or picture yourself as strong, energetic and pain free.

    2

Get a clear picture of what you want to look like. Cut out pictures of people with healthy bodies and put them in a place where you will see them each day. Such photographs carry positive energy that will increase your attraction to wellness.

    3

Write down several positive affirmations about your health. For example: "I am getting healthier everyday," or "My body is slender, strong and full of energy." Then spend 10 to 20 minutes each day meditating on these positive affirmations.

    4

Find the things that inspire you and experience them frequently. When you feel joy, the Law of Attraction will bring more joyful energy into your life. Go for long walks in nature or listen to inspiring music. Anything that makes you feel calm and at peace will do wonders for your body.

    5

Let go of negative emotions. Holding onto anger, resentment or fear will eventually manifest itself as sickness. If your emotions are deep seated, consult a counselor or psychiatrist to help you work through them.

Natural Ways of Purging Bladder

Natural Ways of Purging Bladder

Cold dairy products, spicy food and stress lead to gallbladder problems. Most gallbladder diseases are mild but some are deadly. One of the best ways to avoid diseases caused by bladder problems is to purge the bladder. There are a number of ways to purge the bladder to help a person live a healthier life.

Liquids to Help Flush the Bladder

While doctors often prescribe antibiotics to help clear up a bladder infection, a number of liquid remedies exist to help purge the bladder. Cranberry and blueberry juice contain a component that stops E. coli from sticking to the walls of the bladder. This helps heal infections and the juice also aids bladder infections by not acidifying the urine. Drink 24 oz. in 8-oz. servings every day. While drinking the juices, drink a minimum of 64 oz. of water daily to flush out the bladder.

One-Day Cleanse

Before purging your bladder, choose a day or two where there is nothing planned. Do not eat solid foods on the day you plan to purge your bladder after noon. Feel free to drink fresh juices and water throughout the day until 6:30 p.m. After 6:30 p.m., don't drink any more fluids. At 7:00 p.m. measure out 1/4 cup of olive oil and drink it. Follow the olive oil with 1 to 2 tbsp. of lemon juice. Relax after this, preferably lying on the right side. Repeat the dosage every 15 minutes until you have consumed a full pint of olive oil. After this, go to bed. The bowel movements will begin between 2:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.

21-Day Gallbladder Cleanse

A more gradual way to purge a bladder takes 21 days of work, creating a smoother purge. People can complete this method two to three times a year. During the 21 days, don't consume any meat, foods with high-fat content or dairy products. The best foods to eat are vegetables, fruits and grains. Every day, eat one to two radishes as a snack between meals. Drink 5 cups of chamomile tea or 3 cups of cleavers tea each day. For every 32 lbs. of body weight, add 1 tsp. of flaxseed oil to food.

Leaky Gut Syndrome and HGH

Leaky gut syndrome (LGS) is a defect on the intestinal wall that allows toxic materials to leak into the bloodstream. This toxic material in turn damages other internal organs especially the liver. This syndrome is the result of our modern day processed diet. Some doctors now view LGS as one of the leading causes of health problems from parasites to auto-immune diseases. Human growth hormone (HGH) is touted as the fountain of youth repairing cellular damage to organs throughout the body. But with LGS this may not be the case; HGH may do more harm than good.

Causes

LGS is basically caused by the inflammation of the gut lining, which is caused by a number of factors: antibiotics (causing an overgrowth of flora in the intestinal tract); food and beverages contaminated with parasites; enzyme deficiencies; prescription corticosteroids; high refined carbohydrate diet (junk food); prescription hormones (birth control pills); and mold and fungal mytoxins (found in stored unprocessed foods and refined carbohydrates). The gut lining is extremely thin and when inflamed the cells separate allowing foreign substances to get through that would ordinarily be blocked. When this happens, your system becomes polluted with waste and your immune system goes into high gear to fight the foreign substances.

Effects

Partially digested food gets into the bloodstream and becomes the target of the immune response. The food eaten for health and well being becomes an antigen or allergen and the body develops food allergies. The antigen/allergens cause a variety of illnesses including: arthritis, chronic fatigue, immune disorders, kidney disorders, liver disorders, Lupus, multiple sclerosis and thyroid disorders. The immune system becomes overwhelmed fighting the food that leaks through to the bloodstream, so it can't deal with other problems. These other problems grow worse and your health declines.

Stages

LGS goes through stages. The first stage is the development of food allergies. Once a food allergy develops exposure to it, it significantly increases the permeability of the intestinal lining. The second stage is malnutrition, caused by an increase in para-cellular absorption and a simultaneous decrease in trans-cellular absorption which is how nutrients are absorbed. The third stage is bacterial dysbiosis. This "is a state in which disease or dysfunction is induced by organisms of low intrinsic virulence that alter the metabolic or immunologic responses of their host," according to Dr. Leo Galland. The fourth stage is hepatic stress, in which the liver has to work extra hard to remove macromolecules and other toxins from your system.

Reversal of LGS

Reversing LGS is difficult. The treatment revolves around altering the diet and taking various supplements. The diet must be as hypoallergenic as possible. Anything and everything that is irritating to the stomach must be eliminated, such as: caffeine, alcohol, dairy products, grains containing gluten and high fat foods. Natural antibiotics, antiparasitics and antifungal are needed depending on the type of infection you have. HGH may be too dangerous for someone with LGS because hormones are broken down by the good bacteria in the intestines and with LGS the good bacteria are usually killed off. If you take HGH and it is not absorbed properly, you will reabsorb the HGH and cause growth to occur that you do not want (i.e., tumors).

People suffering from LGS should eat several small meals instead of three large meals and chew their food more thoroughly to help with digestion. Supplements should include: lactobacillus acidophilu; bifidus; chicory; the dahlia plant and/or burdock root. Other supplements that are helpful include: natural digestive enzymes, essential fatty acids, antioxidants and plant extracts. There are now all in one hypoallergenic formulations designed for LGS that contains the necessary nutrients for treatment that are available through natural health practitioners.

The Outcome

Reversing LGS takes a long time and in some cases it may never be reversed or the damage and other illnesses that it causes may never be resolved. Some people must stop eating certain types of foods for years because of food allergies and other issues. In the end, there is no guarantee of a cure, but the effort is definitely worth making because of the dire health consequences of LGS. Also the use of HGH should be limited to after the LGS is cleared up, so that it will work the way it is supposed to and help repair cellular damage.

Remedies for Sinus Breath

You're talking to a co-worker and you notice her nose curls up a little bit and she backs away, and you get home and the dog doesn't even want to talk with you. Perhaps you have just gotten over a cold or a sinus infection and there appears to be an invisible fog seeping from your mouth killing everything in its path.

Remedies for Sinus Breath

What causes this malady? Most likely, it is caused by post-nasal drip from your sinus cavities. The sinuses are the perfect, fertile breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. They are a labyrinth of caverns in the front of your head that allow the air you breathe to be clean and particle free. When you get a cold or have allergies, the walls of the sinus swell and become covered with a thick layer of mucus. This allows bacteria to get caught inside and breed happily ever after. What doesn't come out of your nostrils happily seeps down the back of your throat.

Why Does It Have an Odor?

The bacteria that cause this condition are anaerobic, meaning they can live without air, and they thrive on your mucus. After they break down the amino acids, a sulfur-like product is produced, hence the sour taste and smell emitting from your mouth. Milk and other dairy products cause this as well.

What Should I Do First?

It makes sense to rule out any dental issues or stomach diseases before self-medicating. Treat any infections with prescribed antibiotics if necessary. If stuffiness persists, the doctor may order steroidal nasal sprays that keep the passages open. Once you've established that there is nothing seriously wrong, there are a few things you can do to prevent and control sinus breath. Amazingly, the best answer to your offensive problem is as close as your kitchen and costs less than a nickel; table salt, warm water and a neti pot.

The neti pot has been used for thousands of years by ayurvedic yoga practitioners in India, and used in the western world in the past few decades as a regular routine. If you don't want to spring for a pot (about $9), you can use a small, flexible disposable cup and bend it to fit in the nostril. Mix a couple of pinches of non-iodized salt into warm water, and mix until dissolved. Over a sink, bend forward with your face either to the left or right and start slowly pouring in the saline solution forward into the first nostril. Be patient--the water will find itself running over to the other side of the sinus and come out the other nostril. Repeat on the other side. Blow gently out into the sink or a tissue; you will be astounded as to what comes out. Be sure not to blow too hard, or you will push the infection further into your sinus cavity.

Also, gargle with a fresh mixture of warm saline solution and swish around the mouth. This is a harmless and natural remedy that gets rid of that stinky post-nasal drip. After doing this procedure for a few days, you should see some difference in your breath.

Alternative Methods for Treatment of Sinus Breath

Dentists recommend products with xylitol in them, such as sugarless gum; it kills bacteria in the mouth and throat. Also, the chewing action helps remove earwax and flushes the inner ear, and it tastes good.

If none of these techniques work, you may wish to visit an otolaryngologist, also called an ENT (ear, nose & throat) specialist for further instruction.

How to Get Rid of Fibroids Through Diet

Almost half of women will suffer from fibroids during their life, and one of the easiest ways to get rid of fibroids is through diet changes. Below are some of the more effective ways to cure fibroids through diet.

Instructions

    1

What to Avoid: Estrogen actually feeds fibroids, which is why so many women lose their fibroids during menopause. Many foods contain estrogen, such as red meat, dairy and eggs, so it's important to try to cut back on these foods. Also try to avoid refined carbs, such as white flour and sugar.

    2

Fiber: Focus on adding more fiber to your diet. Fiber helps the liver to process estrogen and remove excess estrogen from the body. If you struggle to get enough fiber in your diet, you should add some fiber in a supplemental form.

    3

Soy: Soy is rich in natural estrogens that are much weaker than synthetic estrogens. They bind to estrogen receptors, helping to prevent the harmful estrogens to bind to these receptors.

How to Use Vitamins to Help Lower Blood Pressure

As one means of helping to lower blood pressure, vitamins can be very effective. This is especially true when combined with other tools that are recommended by the doctor. Here are some of the basic steps in using vitamins to deal with blood pressure that is running a little high.

Instructions

    1

Get a checkup. One of the first things you need to do is find out what factors are contributing to the rise in blood pressure. This information will help you to use vitamins to not only address the blood pressure, but also the underlying causes.

    2

Ask the doctor for recommendations. There are several vitamins that are helpful in lowering blood pressure. There is a good chance that Vitamin C will be recommended, as well as Vitamins E and K.

    3

Obtain recommended levels of dosage. Just like medications, it is possible to ingest too much of a given vitamin and make the issue worse. Work with the doctor to find a safe range that will help with the blood pressure, but not cause other problems.

    4

Treat the underlying causes for the high blood pressure. For example, if stress seems to be a factor, discuss adding several of the B vitamins to your daily regimen. Your doctor can advise you which B vitamins are effective for stress, as well as provide guidelines on the daily dosage.

    5

Monitor your progress. Your doctor can advise you how long it should take before you begin to notice a change in the high blood pressure. Not everyone responds to vitamins in exactly the same way, so dont become discouraged if there is no change for several days.

Natural Remedies for Mold & Mildew Allergies

Mold and mildew can cause all kinds of allergic reactions, such as hives, rashes, sneezing and watery, itchy eyes. Fortunately, there are many natural remedies to help alleviate these symptoms. Sometimes, the best strategy is to avoid the things that allow mold and mildew to get into your home or near you. Other times, it's taking preventive steps or treating existing symptoms.

Keep Your Home Clean and Dry

One of the simplest and easiest natural methods of dealing with mold and mildew is to prevent their growth. Both thrive in warm, wet places where stagnant water collects. Keep your home dry with an air conditioner, fans or a dehumidifier. If you find mold and mildew in your home, wash the areas with a solution of a few drops of bleach in a bucket of water. Wear a mask while you clean. If you don't want to use bleach in your home, some natural products like white vinegar and tea tree oil have similar antiseptic properties.

Change your bedding and towels often. If you have lots of area rugs, drapes and curtains, wash them regularly. Use hot water and/or bleach when possible during wash cycles. Dry clothes at a higher temperature.

Change Your Diet

Dietary changes sometimes alleviate mold allergies. Eat fewer pastries, breads, mushrooms, cheeses and pickles. Eat more vegetables and cut back on fruits and fruit juice (unless you make it with fresh fruit); consume fruit juice quickly after making it to ensure that it doesn't attract, and start growing, mold. According to a study by Cornell University, "Moldy Foods: When to Use, When to Discard," a good way to reduce mold allergy symptoms is to discard any foods that become moldy. The only exceptions are some fibrous fruits and hard cheeses; just snip off and trash the moldy parts.

Treat Your Symptoms

There are several natural remedies for mold and mildew allergies. Yoga, massage, acupuncture and simply learning to relax can help, as all of these strengthen overall health and immune response.

According to researchers at Arizona State University, taking 2,000 mg of vitamin C each day can work as a natural antihistamine. Research also shows that quercetin and bromelain can do the same, especially in conjunction with vitamin C. How much you should take of any of these natural remedies for mold and mildew allergies depends on a number of factors: the degree to which you suffer and how long the allergy season lasts in your area, plus any other allergies or sensitivities you may have.

How to Treat Fluid in the Ear

Fluid build up in the inner ear causes many different heath problems. Childhood ear infections, Swimmer's Ear and chronic dizziness are all caused by fluid build up. Removing the fluid and treating the infection are crucial to healing. In addition, prolonged fluid in the ear contributes to childhood hearing loss.

Instructions

    1

Place 2 to 4 drops of garlic oil in each ear morning and night. Garlic is a natural antibiotic and antifungal. While it will not dry up the fluid, garlic oil will eliminate any present infection and keep new infection from occurring.

    2

Talk to your doctor about the "Ear Popper." The Ear Popper is a device that shoots air up the nose and into the Eustachian tube. This opens the tube and allows the fluid to drain properly.

    3

Place 3 to 6 drops of colloidal silver in each ear morning and night. Like garlic oil, the colloidal silver will eliminate infection and reduce pain.

    4

As a last resort, consider having tubes surgically implanted in the ears. This surgery, while routine carries the risk of complications, including permanent hearing loss.

How to Use Licorice Extract

How to Use Licorice Extract

Licorice, when it is used as a medicine, may be taken in a variety of forms, such as tablets or capsules, teas and extracts. Composed of almost 8 percent glycyrrhizin, licorice can help rid the body of mucus and relieve inflammation. The root of the licorice plant can be used to treat peptic ulcers, skin conditions, canker sores and upper respiratory infections. As an extract, licorice may come in a form without glycyrrhizin, which is known to produce side effects. This type of extract may be a better choice for stomach ulcers. Determine dosage based on the licorice extract selected.

Instructions

    1

Use licorice as a tincture, in a proportion of 1 to 5, several times daily. Take 2 to 5 mL per use.

    2

Take a licorice extract which has been standardized to contain 20 percent glycyrrhizinic acid. Use 250 to 500 mg, three times daily.

    3

Use licorice in a deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) extract. Take 0.4 to 1.6 grams several times daily for peptic ulcers. Chew 300 to 400 mg of the 4:1 version of DGL extract 20 minutes prior to meals, several times daily.

What do Bach Flower Remedies Do?

Bach flower remedies were developed by Dr. Edward Bach in the 1930s. The flower remedies are a collection of 38 flower essences. Each flower essence is used for a specific mood or mental state. Flower essences act to gently bring you back into emotional balance. When the emotions are in balance, physical ailments are more easily healed.

Dr. Edward Bach

Dr. Edward Bach was a trained homeopathic medical doctor. He was also famous for his work as a bacteriologist. Eventually, he left his medical practice to develop the Bach Flower Essences. Bach believed that physical states are caused by mental conditions. With this philosophy, Bach began exploring the plants of his native England for their healing properties. He developed the 38 flower remedies by diligent trial. He would put himself in an emotional place, and then experiment with different plants until he found one that worked.

How Essences are Made

When Bach was first working with the flower essences, he would collect the dew off the flower petals. The sun shining through the water onto the petal infuses the water drop with the vibration of the flower. As the essences gained recognition, higher quantities were required. Bach found that he could achieve the same result by placing the flower petals in a clear glass bowl of fresh water and placing in the sun for three to four hours.

Emotional Balance

Flower essences work to sooth specific emotions. If you are feeling overwhelmed by work or personal obligations, taking Elm Bach flower essence can help you to relax and complete your tasks in a calm and confident way. If you find yourself feeling irritable and impatient, taking Impatiens flower essence can help you to relax into the flow of daily life. Whatever the emotional state, there is a flower essence that will help to sooth your mind, your body and your soul.

The 38 Remedies

The 38 remedies are from England. Among the essences are such English natives as Beech, Chestnut bud, Elm, Gorse, Heather, Wild rose and Willow. Visit the Dr. Edward Bach Center at http://www.bachcentre.com/centre/remedies.htm for a complete description of the essences and the emotions they balance. Since Bach's pioneering work in this field, many people around the world have worked to develop essences from the plants they find growing in their back yard. From cactus essences from the southwest, to mango flower essence form the tropics; there are now flower essences from all over the globe.

Rescue Remedy

In addition to the 38 flower remedies, Bach developed a combination of five flower essences called Rescue Remedy to be taken in times of trauma or severe stress. The combination of Cherry Plum, Clematis, Impatiens, Rock rose and Star of Bethlehem can help bring calmness and poise in times of great emotional stress. When circumstances have created feelings of panic, disorientation, acute trauma and even loss of consciousness, Rescue Remedy can help you regain your strength and stability.

Homeopathic Cure for Plantar Warts

Plantar warts can usually be cured at home without significant expense, pain or surgical treatment, if done correctly. Plantar warts occur on the sole of the feet and can be fairly painful, if they are not addressed in a timely fashion. The most common cause of these warts is exposure to moisture-ridden flooring, most commonly found in bathrooms or swimming pool areas. To prevent plantar warts, thoroughly dry feet whenever they are wet.

Aspirin

Take an aspirin and dissolve it in water. Start by crushing one or two aspirin tablets. The easiest way is to use the flat side of a knife to crush the pills. Put the crushed aspirin in a bowl and mix in one to two drops of water. Apply this mixture directly to the surface of the plantar wart and cover the area with a bandage. Repeat two times a day until the wart is gone.

Cashews

Cashews are a common homeopathic treatment for Plantar Warts. Many people find relief in simply rubbing a whole cashew over the surface of the skin. A more common home remedy is to reduce cashews to a powder by using either a food processor or a mortar and pestle. This powder can then be sprinkled on the plantar wart, or mixed with water to form a topical paste.

Cashews can be found in any grocery store and, depending on the brand, can be fairly inexpensive. Health food stores may also stock cashew oil, which can be rubbed over the surface of the area afflicted by a plantar wart.

Banana

Bananas are another good home remedy and are more inexpensive than the cashews. Start by peeling a ripe banana. Apply the inside of the peel to the wart to ensure the pulp is actually touching it.

Tape the peel to the wart and only remove it when bathing, making sure to change the peel daily. This process takes about a month or longer, but will eventually remove the stubborn wart.

Onion

This foul-smelling recipe can be quite effective. Any type of onion should work for this remedy. Cut an onion in half and remove the middle pulp. Add 1/2 tsp. of salt. The salt will draw out the juices of the onion after several hours; this can then be applied to the wart.

Repeat this process several times a day until the wart has disappeared.

Detox Foot Pads Safety

Detoxifying foot pads contain mainly vinegar and green tea extracts, according to a study done by Dr. Devra Davis on MSNBC. These ingredients are harmless and pose no safety issues for the majority of users. However, the adhesive used in the pads has proven irritating to some users. Overall, the foot pads are generally regarded as safe.

History

Detox foot pads are a form of traditional Japanese medicine, and, according to a report by Dr. Mercola, the original pads used bamboo vinegar that had been fermented for nine years. These pads had an effect on the kidney meridian, located on the feet, according to traditional Japanese medicine. Even these original pads, however, did not detoxify the body of heavy metals.

Misconceptions

None of the foot pads detoxify the body. The brown gunk on the pads is simply the chemical reaction of moisture plus the substances on the pads. In the pads tested by Dr. Davis the substance was simply green tea and vinegar. John Stossel, co-anchor of the ABC news program 20/20, asked for a report on ingredients from Avon and Kinoki, two manufacturers of these pads, but neither company responded.

Benefits

The pads act like poultices and some contain ingredients such as milk thistle, an herb known to be beneficial to the liver, according to Dr. James Duke, author of The Green Pharmacy. It is possible that some benefit may be obtained from placing the pads on certain areas of the body. Dr. Duke states, for example, certain pads contain cayenne pepper, a known pain reducer. If the pad containing cayenne pepper is placed over a painful joint or muscle it is possible that the user could experience pain relief.

Safety

The pads were included in a U.S. Food and Drug Administration import alert on May 11, 2007, because the detox foot pads are misbranded and claim to do something that they don't do. There is no known safety hazard associated with the pads. However, Avon and Kinoki were not forthcoming with their ingredients lists, so allergic reactions are possible, since there is the possibility of an unknown ingredient posing an allergic threat. Also, the adhesive used on the pads can be irritating to some people, according to the 20/20 report.

Considerations

Detoxifying foot pads are a popular health item, especially in Asian countries. Using the foot pads should not pose a problem and may do some good when treated as a poultice. According to a report on WPIX, a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, television station, the Center for Disease Control found 60 toxins in the 2,000 people it tested in 2005. However, detox foot pads may not be the most efficient method for detoxification.

Home Remedy for Brown Spots on Skin

Many people are plagued with brown spots or skin discolorations. Instead of using harsh chemicals to treat dark spots on the skin, look to home remedies for simple solutions, often using ingredients you already have at home. If you continue to be bothered with brown spots, consult your physician for a more conventional treatment plan.

Horseradish

Horseradish may not be thought of as a medicinal herb, but it has a few applications such as the ability to fade brown spots and freckles. Treat brown spots with a horseradish paste applied directly to the skin. Make the paste with one grated piece of horseradish about 4 inches long; combine with 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar. Put it in small glass container and allow to sit for two weeks. After two weeks, strain the mixture and apply with a cotton ball to the affected area three times a day. Store the mixture in the refrigerator.

Lemon

Lemons have mild bleaching abilities and can help to fade brown spots. The citric acid in lemons helps to bleach away and destroy the very top layer of skin. While it will take some time, you can start to notice a gradual fading of dark spots after a few months. Simply cut up some lemon, and rub the slices over your brown spots two to three times a day until you notice results. Likewise, you can saturate a cotton ball with some lemon juice and apply to the affected area a couple of times a day.

Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera has long been used to treat all kinds of skin conditions and irritations. Rub the gel or juice on the affected area twice a day for results. You should notice some improvement within a month.

Castor Oil

Castor oil has strong healing properties and can be used effectively to treat brown spots. Simply saturate a cotton ball with castor oil and apply to the affected area once in the morning and once at night. You should see some results in about a month.

Red Onion

Red onions have a similar bleaching effect as lemons. Simply slice up some red onion and rub the slices over the affected area two to three times a day. The acidic nature of red onions works as a peeling effect on the skin, burning and bleaching off the top layer.
