How to Get Rid of Pink Eye Without Medicine

Pink eye (or pinkeye) is very common and very contagious. Most people have had it at least once. A little-known fact is that pinkeye often clears up on its own with no medical intervention. However, it can take as long as 10 days, and you may not have the luxury of waiting that long for an infection to clear. The following tips will help you get rid of pinkeye without medication.

Instructions

How to Get Rid Of Pink Eye Without Medication

    1

Before using natural pinkeye treatments, keep your eyes clean by wiping them regularly with a cotton ball and warm, sterile water. Do not wear contact lenses or touch your eyes. Use warm compresses to soothe irritation.

    2

Place a moist, cool chamomile tea bag on your eye for 10 minutes at a time, or use a small cup to soak your eye area in the steeped tea.

    3

Make an eyebright tincture. Add five drops of the eyebright herb to 1 cup cooled boiled water. Swab on your eye.

    4

Mix honey with warm, sterile water and place the mixture directly in the eye. Although this natural antiseptic is typically effective, it does sting.

Supplements & Strategy for Anxiety & Stress

Your body's flight-or-flight response is a natural psychological reaction meant to keep you out of harm's way, and it's normal to feel anxious or stressed from time to time. However, the complications of modern life can make it difficult to turn these feelings off, and this is where lifestyle management--including the use of some supplements--can be helpful.

Stress Management

Stress management provides you the tools to reset your body's natural reaction to ongoing stress. The first step is to identify factors that are causing feelings of stress. These may be major factors, such as financial or relationship problems, but they also can involve smaller daily hassles, such as getting stuck in traffic or dealing with an irritable child. Once you have identified what is causing your stress, brainstorm strategies to make it less problematic. Don't be afraid to consult experts for serious issues or to talk with friends and family about suggestions for dealing with everyday stresses.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

If you have persistent issues with feelings of anxiety, you may be suffering from generalized anxiety disorder. This condition can make it difficult to enjoy life and may require medications or psychotherapy. The Mayo Clinic recommends seeing a doctor when persistent worrying is interfering with work or relationships, if you are using drugs or alcohol to cope with anxiety or if you have persistent suicidal thoughts or behaviors.

Relaxation Techniques

Most people can benefit from relaxation techniques. This goes beyond just enjoying some quiet time or a hobby; it involves refocusing your attention on something calming to increase a sense of awareness of your body. Yoga and meditation are common relaxation techniques, and most communities have groups to help people get started. Exercising and listening to music also help lower stress. The most important thing is to practice focused relaxation on regular basis.

Herbal Supplments

There are many herbal supplements that can help reduce stress and anxiety. Chamomile and lavender are commonly used herbs that having soothing effect. They most often are prepared as tea. There are a number of amino acid-based and alkaloid-based nutrients that also are purported to relieve feelings of stress, and these can be found in various foods or may be available as pills. Seek the advice of a qualified nutritionist or your doctor when taking supplements or medications.

How to Determine the Particle Size of Colloidal Gold

How to Determine the Particle Size of Colloidal Gold

The value of gold has been recognized for thousands of years, not just as a form of currency but also as a medicinal agent. It is believed that ingesting gold can help stabilize one's mood, improve cognitive and neurological functions, relieve the pain of rheumatoid arthritis and combat certain types of tumors. Medicinal gold is taken in colloidal form, which means that the gold is broken down into nanoparticles (a single human hair is approximately 60,000 nanometers in diameter) and mixed with a liquid -- usually water. There are a few different ways to measure the size of the gold particles. One method is called dynamic light scattering (DLS).

Instructions

    1

Clean the sample container on the machine.

    2

Prepare the sample of colloidal gold to be measured according to the DLS machine's test instructions.

    3

Place the sample into the machine and turn on the power.

    4

Press the start button to begin the DLS process. The machine works by shining a laser at the sample container and measuring the amount of refraction that occurs when the laser interacts with the particles in the sample. This information is used to calculate the size of the particles.

    5

Print or otherwise record the results when the machine displays the size of the particles in the sample.

How to Cure Common Fingernail and Toenail Fungus Naturally

How to Cure Common Fingernail and Toenail Fungus Naturally

Fungal nail infections aren't just unsightly discolorations of the nail, they are problematic infections that can worsen over time without treatment. Yet even with treatment the nail infection may not heal completely or may recur. These infections tend to be impervious to most over-the-counter anti-fungal medications. Worse, thanks to the slow nature of new nail growth to fully heal the nail, these types of infections take a while to treat and can result in considerable expense if you use prescription medication. Many sufferers turn to home remedies for an inexpensive and natural alternative.

Essential Oils

Several oils have anti-fungal properties that help kill bacteria and facilitate healing. Tea tree oil tends to do double duty, making it an alternative treatment for all sorts of ailments, including athlete's foot, scabies, acne, ringworm and fungal infections of the nail. Other oils, like lavender, have the added benefit of giving one a general sense of well-being thanks to relaxing and pleasing aromas. Apply oil twice a day and allow it to soak under the nail, continuing the treatment for at least three months. Up to 60 percent of sufferers see improvement after six months.

Vinegar

Thanks to its acidic content, vinegar is a natural and inexpensive home remedy that can be used for everything from deodorizing to fighting bacteria. For nail fungus, the Mayo Clinic suggests a vinegar soak with one part vinegar to two parts water. Soak the nail for 15 to 20 minutes and then dry thoroughly. It should be gentle enough to use daily, but if you experience irritation, aim instead for three times a week.

Hydrogen Peroxide

The human body produces hydrogen peroxide in order to fight infection. As such, that inexpensive bottle you can find in any drug store has been a go-to remedy for generations to ward off bacteria. Dilute the peroxide with water to make it gentler for your body and then soak for five minutes. You can do this daily or include it with another therapy such as a vinegar soak on alternating days.

Considerations

While home remedies help keep down the cost of conventional medicine, they should never take the place of advice from your own medical professional. For some patients, a fungal nail infection can result in serious complications. Discuss with your doctor what options you have for treating your nails, especially if you have risk factors like an impaired immune system or medical conditions like diabetes.

Carpal Tunnel Release Exercises

Millions of Americans suffer from carpal tunnel symptoms, mostly due to the increase in work done on the computer. If you write as a profession this is an even more pressing issue. The solution is to get an ergonomic keyboard and do frequent carpal tunnel release exercises throughout the day.

Hands Up

Place both hands above your head. Open and close your hands intermittently for a few minutes.

Bodybuilding Stretch

Place your arm at a 90 degree angle in front of you with your hand toward your face, as if you are holding a dumbbell for body building. Close your hand into a fist, lower it down as you open the fist wide, then bring it back up into a fist. Repeat this for a few minutes on each arm.

Arms Out

Put your arms straight out in front of you with your palms up. Flip the palms down and then back up repeatedly for about two to three minutes.

Shoulder Stretch

Put both of your arms by your sides at a 90 degree angle and try to squeeze your shoulder blades in as you turn your palms upward then back to a resting position.

Fingers

Put both of your thumbs on a desk in front of your and lightly push down to stretch them. Repeat for all fingers until you feel relief.

Home Cures for Dry Mouth

Caffeine, stress, painkillers and many types of modern-day medicine can result in the medical condition of xerostomia. Also known as dry mouth, the condition can make it difficult to swallow and talk and can lead to tooth decay tooth and infected gums.

Water and Fluids

Drink water. Have at least eight glasses of water, each glass measuring 8 ounces, daily. Make it a point to wash down every meal with water. Cut down on tea, coffee, aerated beverages or any soft drink. Help the passage of food by having some fluid with your meal, such as a sauce, stew, gravy, soup or broth. Try softer foods such as noodles and slippery foods such as yogurt.

Sugar

Because a dry mouth often results from dehydration, it is crucial to give the body electrolytes to rehydrate it. Apart from store-bought concoctions, you can easily make some at home with a mixture of one tablespoon of sugar, half a teaspoon of baking soda, one teaspoon salt and a little lime juice in a cup of water.

Fruit Pits

Sucking on pits from fruits such as nectarines, peaches and cherries will aid in increasing the flow of saliva, without piling fat calories onto your diet.

Celery

Celery has a lot of water content, helping to rouse salivary glands and keeping your mouth moist.

Natural Breath Sweeteners

As a dry mouth is often accompanied by bad breath, try some parsley and aniseed or fennel, nature's breath freshening agents. While parsley is a great source of nutrients such as iron, calcium and vitamins C and A, a teaspoon of a mixture of aniseed and fennel or fennel and rosemary will help your mouth to stay moist. You could also soak a mixture of one teaspoon each of aniseed, dried mint and rosemary and two and half cups of boiling water, and use it to gargle several times a day. Do not buy mouthwash that contains alcohol, which will lead to drying of the mouth.

Cayenne Pepper

A dry mouth can obstruct the taste buds from differentiating the taste of foods, so use a lot of cayenne pepper in your meals to rouse the salivary glands. Have salsa, some chili or anything tangy to induce your salivary glands to secrete juices.

General Measures

Try to sleep with your mouth closed and breathe through your nose. Rinse your mouth a few times a day with water or saltwater, fluoride, or a mixture of water, lime juice and glycerin. Breathe in steam and try to maintain moist air around you with humidifiers at home.

Home Cure for Overactive Bladder

An overactive bladder causes the sufferer to feel a frequent and sudden urge to urinate. The condition may cause incontinence. Some people are too embarrassed to discuss treatment options with their doctor. Some home treatments can help get control of the bladder and remedy the condition.

Training

You can train your bladder to cope with the sudden urge to urinate. Begin training your bladder by waiting just a few minutes when you feel the urge to urinate. When you feel the urge to urinate, wait two or three minutes before going to the bathroom. Train your bladder to wait longer and longer intervals between the time you feel the urge and when you head to the bathroom. Eventually the wait time between bathroom trips will extend three to four hours.

Pelvic Exercises

Kegels are exercises that strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. Men and women can both perform these exercises to help remedy an overactive bladder. To find the correct muscles, stop your urine stream the next time you are in the bathroom. The muscles that you use to stop urine are the ones that you will be working in your exercises.

Contract the muscles and hold for four or five seconds. Release the muscle, rest for a couple of seconds and repeat the contraction. Complete a set of 10 or 20 of these contractions for one set of exercises. Do10 sets of exercises a day to strengthen your muscles and have better control over urination. Performing fewer of these exercises per day is not as effective as completing at least 10 sets.
The exercises can be completed anywhere at any time of the day. Schedule your kegel exercises so that they become a part of your daily routine.

Scheduled Bathroom Breaks

Traditional medicine recommends scheduling your bathroom breaks during the day to treat an overactive bladder. Plan your bathroom breaks at the same time every day to further train your bladder to void under your control. Your bathroom breaks should be about three or four hours apart at the same times every day.

Voiding

An overactive bladder may be the result of not emptying it completely during urination. During your scheduled bathroom breaks, wait some additional time to ensure that you completely empty your bladder.

The home treatments for an overactive bladder focus on behavior modification. These treatments may take some time to work for your condition.

Herbal Treatment for Scalp Ringworm

Ringworm is a fungal infection. On the scalp, it is called tinea capitis. Certain herbal treatments are very effective at killing fungus and can be used to treat your tinea capitis. While most herbal treatments for ringworm are used topically, certain herbs have strong antifungal properties when used internally.

Use an Integrative Approach

One of the best ways to use herbs for ringworm is to combine them with the typical standard treatment, over-the-counter (OTC) antifungals. Used together, they will reinforce the benefits of each other. It is best to use your topical herbal treatments and OTC creams at separate times druing the day. Prompt, consistent treatment can clear up the infection in about three weeks. If you are interested in using natural therapies alone, consulting with a health care provider experienced in alternative medicine is the best way to design an effective treatment regimen.

Herbal Treatment

Herbal treatments for this condition are mainly used externally. Using the following herbal treatments will help kill the infection and promote healing.

Tea tree oil is well-known for its action against fungus. Apply the oil two to three times a day to the affected area. You can use full strength and do not need to dilute it. Do not use tea tree if you are allergic to celery or thyme. Use walnut leaf extract if your infection is oozing; apply the oil to the scalp two to three times a day.

Taking 4,000 mg daily of a garlic supplement is equivalent to eating one clove of garlic. If you choose, you can eat a clove daily; you do not need to chew it. Garlic is a potent antifungal herb. Drinking pau'd arco tea three times daily or using an extract as directed on the label is also beneficial for fighting the infection from the inside.

How Does Vinegar Treat Nail Fungus?

Why Use Vinegar?

A nail fungus can infect toenails due to the damp conditions of sneakers and other shoes. A nail fungus can also be caught in a nail salon or public shower. Your doctor can prescribe treatments, including oral antibiotics, that can kill the fungus, but many find the home remedy of white vinegar less risky than a side-effect-inducing oral medication.

White Vinegar Treatment

Vinegar has been used for thousands of years in numerous ways. White vinegar usually has an acidity level of 4 percent--both the acidity and antiseptic properties of vinegar create an environment in which a nail fungus will not grow. Apply white vinegar to the nail with a saturated cotton ball, wiping from the base of the nail outward. Feet can also be soaked in a basin of white vinegar and water for 15 minutes. As the nail grows and is treated with the vinegar, the fungus is killed and will not infect new nail growth.

Continued Treatment

Use vinegar to treat nail fungus every day for about one month and closely monitor its effectiveness. You should begin to see new, clear nail growing from the cuticle. Clip nails short, cleaning the clippers with rubbing alcohol when finished. Keep using the vinegar treatment until the infected or discolored nail has completely grown out.

How to Know Which Herbs to Avoid During Pregnancy

When you get pregnant your body has special needs. Your nutrition needs change and overall you need to treat your body with respect. This includes monitoring what you put into your body.

Most people think that because herbs are natural, there's nothing to worry about. But this isn't the case; there are plenty of herbs that should be absolutely avoided during pregnancy. For example, herbs like rosemary are dangerous because they can stimulate uterine contractions.

In this article I will give you the basics on how to know which herbs to avoid during pregnancy.

Instructions

    1

Evaluate the herbs you have in your spice cabinet and in your medicine cabinet. You'll want to research every single one of these, just to be safe.

    2

Check your multivitamin. Some include herbal remedies, and once you get pregnant the herbs contained in them may not be suitable.

    3

Having a set of resources at your disposal is key. You can easily do research on the Internet. I've also included a link in Resources below, which has a list of herbs to avoid. Some herbs on this list include: Borage oil, comfrey, angelica, dong quai, horsetail, mugwort, uva ursi and yarrow.

    4

If you love taking herbal medicine, you may also want to consult with a midwife and an herbalist for the best herbs to take during pregnancy and those to avoid. But don't just take their suggestions to heart--research them as well.

    5

Let your doctor know about any herbal remedies you are taking. In fact, if you decide to use a midwife as well, make sure your midwife and doctor work well together.

How to Take Shilajit

Shilajit means "rock of life" in Sanskrit. Anecdotes, none of them verified by medical studies, claim the Shilajit plant gives its users the ability to retain youth and energy, to endure the ravages of time with a rock-like durability. Shilajit is found in the Himalayan region. It supposedly contains 85 minerals and fulvic acid. Some people take it in supplement form to ward off illnesses, boost metabolism and lose weight. However, there is no reputable evidence that this supplement can impart any of these benefits.

Instructions

    1

Begin by taking 300 mg of Shilajit per day. This may be taken at any time during the day, but it should be taken with water. If you are using liquid Shilajit, mix it in juice or water.

    2

If your body does well with 300 mg of Shilajit and you do not experience a rash, headache or other reaction, add in an additional 100 mg of Shilajit per day and work up to 500 mg. An average dose of Shilajit is between 300 to 500mg daily.

    3

Cut back on Shilajit if you experience any negative side effects. Increase your water consumption.

Natural Remedy for Bladder Infection in Men

Bladder infections, though most common in women, can occur to males. They usually cause painful and frequent urination, lower back pain and sometimes nausea and chills. If not treated, the infection can spread to the kidneys and can cause irreparable damage. There are, however, natural measures that can be taken to combat a bladder infection.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is key to treating a bladder infection, as it promotes regular urination and helps flush the urinary system. Drink lots of water and avoid caffeinated beverages such as tea, coffee and soda. Hot tea can be helpful, but make sure it is herbal and non-caffeinated, as caffeine is an irritant to the bladder and urinary tract and will only make it more painful. And even though some sodas are caffeine-free, the sugar and sugar substitutes can irritate an infected bladder, as well.
Fruit juices, particularly cranberry juice, are very helpful, as the natural acidity acts as an astringent to your bladder and urinary tract and helps remove bacteria. Other 100 percent juices high in vitamin C and antioxidants will work, as well. Avoid juices that contain high amounts of added sugar or corn syrup, which can dehydrate your body.

Natural Remedies

Look for echinacea, goldenseal and vitamin C online or at your local market or health food store. Many manufacturers sell these in combination treatments, extracts, capsules or herbal teas. These supplements are great immune system boosters and help the healing process. Take at least 90mg of vitamin C and between 500 and 1,000mg of echinacea and goldenseal daily.
Uva ursi (bearberry) and buchu help cleanse the bladder and urinary tract and promote healthy urination. Cranberry (both the juice and fruit) has been shown to be effective in promoting urinary tract and bladder health. Drink it regularly, but remember to consume other beverages as well, especially water.
In addition, sarsaparilla is soothing to the urinary tract and bladder when urination is painful and/or slow.

When to See a Doctor

If the infection doesn't improve or disappear within seven to 10 days then you should see a doctor, as it could be a sign of a more serious infection or condition. Most likely, your doctor will prescribe an antibiotic.

Natural & Herbal Remedies for Bleaching & Whitening

Natural & Herbal Remedies for Bleaching & Whitening

Discolored or yellowed teeth can ruin an otherwise nice smile. Many commercially prepared toothpastes are available that claim to whiten and bleach teeth, but not all are as effective as they claim to be. The cost of whitening your teeth at a dentist's office can be high. Natural and herbal remedies offer inexpensive and effective solutions to whiten your teeth and keep them looking great.

Strawberries and baking soda

Make a whitening paste with strawberries and baking soda. Mash one ripe strawberry to form some pulp and mix with 1/2 tsp. of baking soda. Spread the mixture on your teeth using a soft-bristle toothbrush. Let sit on your teeth for 5 minutes, then brush to remove the pulp. Dental floss may be in order to remove any stubborn strawberry seeds. Don't use too often --- once a week will get best results without damaging enamel.

Hydrogen peroxide and water

Mix equal parts of hydrogen peroxide and water. Rinse your mouth with the water, focusing on the teeth by keeping the mixture toward the front of your mouth. Spit out, and rinse with clear water. Repeat daily until you see results.

Herbs

Rub a section of walnut tree bark over your teeth to whiten them. Repeat daily for best results. Mix equal parts of dried, ground bay leaves and ground orange peels to form a paste. Apply to the teeth with a soft toothbrush. Leave on for 5 minutes; rinse off with clean water. Repeat daily to see results. But with either of these methods don't continue indefinitely because the same compounds that whiten your teeth can damage them if used too frequently.

Natural Cures for Tiredness

Natural Cures for Tiredness

If you have been feeling tired, fatigued or stressed, natural remedies can provide you with energy and endurance. Natural health remedies include nutritional supplements such as vitamins, minerals and plant extracts. These work naturally with the body to support energy levels. If you are currently taking prescribed medication, consult with your health care provider before purchasing natural health products.

B-complex

The B-complex vitamin encompasses the whole spectrum of B vitamins that work together to support the nervous system, increase energy levels and protect cells from free radical damage. Of special importance is vitamin B5 for adrenal health, vitamin B6 for balanced serotonin levels, and B9 and B12 for energy, memory, concentration and focus. B-complex can be taken as a nutritional supplement, or through the diet in foods such as pork, nutritional yeast, nuts, seeds and sea vegetables.

CoQ10

CoQ10 is an antioxidant enzyme that is vital for manufacturing cellular energy and is present in every tissue of the body. Although the body produces CoQ10, taking this enzyme as a supplement can provide added benefits. According to James Balch, M.D., and Mark Stengler, N.D., authors of "Prescriptions for Natural Cures," 100 mg of CoQ10 three times daily is recommended for improving symptoms of fatigue. CoQ10 is also obtained naturally in the diet by eating red meat, chicken and fish.

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha, also known as withania, is a native plant of India that has been used in traditional and contemporary herbal medicine for insomnia, chronic fatigue and low immune function. According to Kerry Bone, author of "The Clinical Guide to Blending Liquid Herbs", Ashwagandha root improves stamina, supports cardiovascular function, balances sleep cycles and strengthens adrenal gland function. Take ashwagandha daily to protect your body from stress in the form of a supplement, tea or a liquid tincture.

Ginseng

Ginseng root is known worldwide for its restorative properties. A rich source of natural chemicals called ginsengosides, ginseng root helps combat stress and increases stamina. According to an 2003 article by Vince Boyd published in "Modern Phytotherapist," ginseng helps to improve symptoms of fatigue, tired limbs, low appetite and poor memory. Take ginseng root as a supplement, a tea or liquid tincture. This herbal product may increase blood pressure so if you are currently afflicted and taking medication, consult your health care professional.

Rhodiola

Rhodiola, also known as golden root and arctic root, is a Siberian herb that has become the focus of recent medical research. In a review of research published in Alternative Medicine Review in 2002, rhodiola was found to increase stamina, endurance and decrease stress levels through the balance of hormones such as serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. The review recommends using a standardized extract of rhodiola rosea root to ensure you receive a clinically significant level of the active chemicals in the plant.

Natural Muscle Relaxants

Muscle pain and soreness is a very common symptom that can result from illness, injury or even exercise. There are dozens of medicines, techniques and methods designed to prevent or treat muscle soreness. However, many people prefer natural remedies and supplements and choose to abstain from conventional medicines when alleviating muscle soreness.

Massage

Massage has been used for centuries as a method of relieving muscle pain and promoting mental wellness. Today, a professional massage therapist can employ numerous techniques, such as reflexology, friction massage and acupressure to provide natural relief to specific areas of the body. The pressure applied by massage dilates blood vessels to provide optimum circulation and restore oxygen to tight, cramping muscles. Massage should be performed only by someone with professional training to prevent bruising.

Aromatherapy

Indulging the olfactory senses with certain scents has been known to calm twitching muscles and prevent spasms. Adding a few drops of lavender, chamomile or lemongrass extract to a warm bath and soaking for 15 to 20 minutes is an excellent way to relieve muscles. Additionally, scented essential oils can be applied to the legs, arms and chest to provide an ongoing muscle relaxant. Mist your pillow with a lavender-scented spray to indulge in aromatherapy while you sleep.

Stretching

People often develop muscle pain by neglecting to stretch on a daily basis. Stretching allows your muscles to remain fluid and loose, especially when exercising. Try to stretch the key portions of your body--arms, legs, hamstrings, shoulders, inner thighs--by engaging in slow, prolonged stretches that push the limits of your flexibility without causing excess discomfort. Exercises like yoga and tai chi are also excellent ways to naturally alleviate muscle pain while maintaining flexibility and promoting physical balance.

Supplements

There are numerous natural supplements that can be taken orally or applied directly to the skin to reduce muscle pain. Supplements such as herbal pills or tinctures contain ingredients like ginger root, red clover and valerian that help relieve both muscles and stress. These are generally vegetarian, homeopathic supplements that provide non-invasive methods of relaxation. However, a doctor should be consulted before taking any supplements to avoid adverse complications like allergic reactions.

Warning

It should be noted that natural muscle relaxants do not act as a replacement for conventional medicines. They act primarily as temporary methods of relief that promote general health and wellness, but do not act as cures. Speak with a doctor to determine which method of muscle relaxant is right for you, especially if you are injured or have a pre-existing condition.

Corn Bag Directions

Corn Bag Directions

When heated, corn bags offer welcome relief to sore muscles, aching joints and cramped abdomens. Corn bags feature a simple fabric pouch, usually cotton, denim or flannel, filled with dried corn kernels, herbs and essential oils. Lavender, rosemary, cloves and even dried rose petals come recommended for soothing headaches while eucalyptus and varieties of mint help soothe muscles. You may also freeze corn bags for use on bruises and hot and cold muscle therapy. One of the best things about corn bags is that they are very easy to make for almost no expense. You can make one in about an hour.

Instructions

    1

Mix 4 or 5 cups of dried corn kernels with 2 tsps. of each of your dried herbs and 10 drops of each essential oil you plan to use. If you want to use only one herb or essential oil, use 2 tbsps. of a single herb and 30 drops of oil. Stir with your hands until thoroughly combined.

    2

Wash your hands and lay out a cotton pillowcase on a clean, flat surface. Measure about 6 inches up from the bottom of the pillowcase and place a pin there. Pin a straight line across your pillowcase and cut the case off just above the pins.

    3

Turn your pillowcase bottom inside out and sew the opening about halfway closed just below the pins, removing the pins as you go. Turn the case right-side out again and pour the mixture from Step 1 into the fabric. If the mixture doesnt fill the fabric about full, simply add a cup or two more of dried corn.

    4

Turn the open edges of your pouch inward and pin the opening closed. Sew the opening closed with your sewing machine. Knead and shake your new corn bag to thoroughly mix its contents.

    5

Heat your corn bag in the microwave for no more than two minutes. Allow it to cool for about 45 seconds before using and always use it over your clothing. To use cold, place it in the freezer for about 30 minutes.

How to Use Lavender to Improve Circulation

How to Use Lavender to Improve Circulation

People who have various health conditions, including limited mobility, may show symptoms of poor circulation. Massage and mineral soaks using lavender can often help improve circulation, especially in the lower limbs. The calming property of lavender also may help a person's emotional well-being by reducing anxiety and irritability.

Instructions

    1

Spread a towel out on the floor to keep the area dry. This will be your workspace, the place where you can gather your supplies. Have a chair ready to use for your footbath.

    2

Fill a basin with water that is hot but not scalding. Use the same temperature water that you like for a bath. If you do not have a basin, substitute a large bowl or a bucket.

    3

Place the basin on the towel you have laid out. If you are afraid of spilling, put the empty basin on the floor and use a pitcher to fill it up.

    4

Dissolve a scoop of lavender bath salts into the water. You can also use dried lavender flowers if you do not have bath salts.

    5

Put your bare feet into the basin and soak until the water is no longer hot. The lavender will stimulate your senses and your circulation.

    6

Dry your feet when the water has become cold. Dump the water out of the basin first to avoid knocking it over and spilling it.

    7

Combine 1 oz. of carrier oil with 1 ml of lavender essential oil in a small bowl. Sweet almond is a good carrier oil to use.

    8

Massage the lavender oil into your feet and lower legs. You can do this yourself or have someone do it for you. Massage can improve your circulation, especially in your feet.

    9

Put on a pair of soft cotton socks after your foot massage to avoid leaving greasy footprints around you. Cotton allows your skin to breathe.

    10

Observe how you feel after the lavender treatments to determine how often you want to repeat them. For someone with poor circulation, several times a week can be beneficial.

How to Improve Circulation With Thai Massage

How to Improve Circulation With Thai Massage

The traditional therapeutic technique known as Thai massage focuses on improving circulation and unblocking energy to relieve unhealthy joint and muscle tensions. The physical movements and stretches applied through Thai massage can be learned individually or as a couple. Improve blood circulation with Thai Massage.

Instructions

    1

Know that the basis of Thai massage is surrounded by the importance of blood to our bodies. If blood did not flow properly through your body, you couldn't handle bacterial and viral infections. Serious complications could develop, and toxins would build up in your muscles, leading to muscle pains and other ill effects. It's been found that the reason behind numb, restless muscles, dizziness, improper posture can often be traced insufficient blood flow to certain areas of the body.

The strokes, movements and positions utilized in Thai massage allow participants to feel their blood circulating throughout their bodies, making them feel warm and healthy. These movements also increase their flexibility.

    3

Know that parts of Thai massage mimic aspects of yoga. For instance, a Thai massage session begins with a meditation phase, just as yoga does. The Thai masseuse will often apply hard pressure to the recipient while moving the body into different positions to access pressure points and restore energy by focus on different strokes and stretches.

    4

Make an appointment for a Thai massage once you are familiar with the practice. Some traditional day spas offer the service, and there are also some specialists who offer only this type of massage.

    5

Note the difference in your body following your first massage session. Hopefully, you'll feel rejuvenated and refreshed. Pair Thai massage with exercise for optimum results.

Natural Products for High Blood Pressure

More and more people are seeking natural methods of treating their high blood pressure. There are some plants that are known to either lower or regulate blood pressure.

Cayenne

Hot peppers such as cayenne, serrano and habenero peppers reduce blood pressure by increasing blood circulation. Hot peppers also increase metabolism.

Garlic

Garlic is a plant that regulates blood pressure, meaning it will raise low blood pressure or lower high blood pressure.

Ginger

Ginger acts as a vasodilator, opening up the blood vessels so the blood flows more easily. It also acts as a muscle relaxant, which ultimately leads to a lessening of blood pressure.

Hawthorn Berry

Hawthorn berries work as a diuretic, dilating blood vessels and thinning the blood. This makes it easier for the heart to pump blood through the body.

Red Clover

Red clover is another plant that thins the blood. When the blood is too thick, it makes the heart work harder and increases blood pressure.

Other Naturals

Cassia bark, peppermint, dandelion, yarrow and mallow root are just a few of the many other plants that have been used for centuries to treat high blood pressure.

Herbal Remedies for Detoxing Your Body

Herbal Remedies for Detoxing Your Body

Sometimes toxins can build up in your body's natural organs of detoxification and require extra attention through an external detoxification process. You may prefer to detox your body through herbal remedies, which can be created at home by steeping herbs in hot water to make herbal teas. When beginning any exercise, diet or supplement program, consult a doctor or your health care professional before embarking on the detox process.

Kidney Detox

VitaminsToHealth.com explains that kidney herbal detox regimens may help the urinary tract, too. There are different kinds of herbs used in kidney detox, depending on the kind of detox that you'd like to achieve. Some herbs work to reduce inflammation and irritation, while others seek to help remove waste from the body more effectively. Some kidney detox herbal remedies use parsley, dandelion, juniper berries and ginger, according HealthRecipes.com.

Liver Detox

The liver works much like other toxin-processing organs in that it helps transform poisons and toxins that enter the body into elimination material. If the body cannot use certain foods or drinks in the digestion and nutrition process, the liver works to eliminate it, which is why some people find a liver herbal detox to be useful. Some herbs used in liver detox remedies are dandelion, parsley, chamomile, thistle, angelica and red beet, according to HealthRecipes.com.

Lung Detox

Lungs are among the body's first defense against illness and infection, so their potential to hold toxins is great. The herbs used to cleanse the lungs will depend on whether you are using the remedy to improve respiration or decrease the amount of mucus in breathing passages. Some herbal remedies used in lung detox are sage, thyme, nettles and ginger root, according to BodyDetoxDiet.net.

Colon Detox

Colon detox sometimes is used synonymously with the term colon cleanse. Herbal detox regimens are used to draw out mucus, fecal matter, toxins, poisons and sometimes blood. Some herbs used in colon detox herbal remedies are aloe vera, senna leaves and pods, cascara sagrada, bentonite clay, activated charcoal and apple pectin.

What Can You Eat to Reduce Body Odor?

Body odor, though embarrassing, can result from a variety of factors, including a change in your body's metabolism, a certain medicine or drug you take or failure to clean your body properly. Perspiration by itself has no odor but when mixed with bacteria, it develops a foul odor. In lieu of merely masking the problem with deodorant, control and reduce body odor by changing what you eat.

Chlorophyll & Magnesium

Take two chlorophyll tablets with each meal to help reduce body odor. You can also take this natural deodorizer in liquid form if you can't swallow pills.

Magnesium provides another natural deodorizer. Eat foods high in magnesium such as green vegetables, including spinach and greens. Some beans, nuts, peas and whole, unrefined grains also make excellent sources of magnesium. Try to consume at least 500 mg of magnesium daily. If you can't get enough in your diet, take a magnesium supplement in pill form.

Vitamins A and B

Eat foods high in vitamins A and B to reduce body odor and add much-needed vitamins to your body. Consume liver, tuna, eggs, carrots, cod liver oil, turkey, bananas, potatoes, legumes, sweet potatoes, spinach, kale, apricots and watercress. Many of these foods contain both vitamins A and B. Molasses and brewer's yeast also make excellent sources of vitamin B. Ingest at least 50 mg of each vitamin daily; you can also take a pill supplement.

Rice and Raw Vegetables

Brown rice will also eliminate body odor. Unlike organic whey proteins, brown rice---also a protein---will not produce an odor. Instead of eating a big breakfast of pancakes, bacon and toast, mix a combination of raw vegetables (greens, kale and vegetables containing vitamins A and B) in your blender, and drink it each morning. The raw vegetable smoothie will not produce an odor, and you will receive both vitamins A and B as well.

Zinc

Foods rich in zinc help reduce perspiration and body odor---oysters, lobster, crab, nuts, beans, whole grains and fortified breakfast cereals; you can also take zinc tablets. Try to ingest 15 mg daily of the mineral. Consuming more than 15 mg of zinc may interfere with your absorption of copper.

Foods and Drinks to Avoid

Reduce your intake of onions, garlic, dairy products, coffee, soft drinks, meats and exotic spices. These foods and substances can lead to body odor. If you do consume them, eat small portions and mix them with foods mentioned above that fight body odor.

Natural Cures for a Candida Yeast Rash

Natural Cures for a Candida Yeast Rash

Several natural compounds are available for the successful treatment of Candida infections. Turmeric oil, omega-3 fatty acids, garlic, boric acid and sodium bicarbonate have all been clinically shown to be effective in eliminating rashes and skin disease caused by yeast. However, always consult a physician before self-treating with natural or herbal remedies.

Sodium Bicarbonate

A study published in the August 2008 issue of, "AIDS Patient Care and STDS" investigated the efficacy of sodium bicarbonate to treat Candida infections of the mouth as commonly seen in HIV patients. The researchers recruited 150 patients and tested their salvia for yeast concentrations and then supplemented them with mouth rinses containing a 5 percent sodium bicarbonate concentration. The authors found that mouth rinses with sodium bicarbonate increased the amount of salvia produced and concluded that it was the best choice to decrease Candida concentrations.

Boric Acid

Boric acid and borax are often mentioned on the Internet as natural remedies for the treatment of Candida infections. In an article appearing in the April 2010 issue of, "Gynecology and Obstetric Investigations," the authors concur that boric acid is efficient in the long-term treatment of unrelenting infections. However, they caution that other factors such as antibiotic use, contraceptives and personal hygiene products have also been shown to aggravate this condition.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids have been extensively researched for their benefits in treating a number of medical issues. The February 2010 issue of, "Molecular and Oral Microbiology" investigated omega-3 fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) to determine their efficacy in treating Candida infections. The study found that all three exhibited antifungal actions in addition to being efficient for the treatment of several strains of bacteria.

Turmeric Oil

The active ingredient of turmeric, a compound called curcumin, has been shown to be a biologically active component for the treatment of many diseases including obesity, diabetes and bacterial infections. The December 1995 edition of, "Ethnopharmacology" included a study to evaluate the benefit of oil made from turmeric to combat 15 different strains of dermatophytes, organisms that colonize the skin. The authors found that the growth and reproduction of all 15 dermatophytes were successfully inhibited by a 1:80 dilution of oil made from turmeric. Interestingly, none of the pathogens were inhibited by curcumin alone.

Hydrogen Peroxide

The April 2011 issue of, "Photochemical and Photobiological Science" included a study designed to investigate the value of hydrogen peroxide to eliminate bacterial and fungal infections of the skin. The study confirmed that hydrogen peroxide has the capacity to effectively treat Candida infections, but noted that activation was much greater in the presence of a photoinhibitor, a substance that prevents the stimulation of specific light-sensitive enzymes.

Garlic

A study published in the December 2010 issue of, "Medical Mycology" investigated the effects of garlic derivatives to treat Candida infections. The researchers tested two strains of the fungus and found that concentrations of diallyl sulphide, a biologically active constituent of garlic, at a concentration of 500 mg/ml effectively inhibited the growth of the strains through the degradation of necessary enzymes needed by the organisms for biological processes.

Natural Cures for Skin Parasites

There is a wide variety of parasites that can invade your skin, causing a plethora of troubles. There are also a number of natural cures for skin parasites that can help give you some relief. And humans aren't the only ones to be troubled by skin parasites---pets, including cats and dogs, can suffer from them as well, and there are simple natural cures for skin parasites that are appropriate for them, too.

Skin Rashes

One of the most common results of a skin parasite is a rash. According to the website Buzzle.com, there are several natural treatments you can try. Many people find aloe to be very effective, and it doesn't have to be in the form of some store-bought, processed lotion. Simply cut lengthwise down each of a few leaves from an aloe vera plant, and carefully remove the colorless pulp from each leaf (not the yellow fluid, which is closer to the skin, but the thicker pulp). This is the gel of the aloe, and applying it to the affected area three to four times each day can clear up the skin. As a side note, only use fresh leaves.

Another of the natural cures for skin parasites is simple olive oil. Like the aloe, you apply it to the affected area, and it often gives relief immediately. Along the same lines is good old vitamin E, which you can find in cod liver oil. In the case of this treatment, you can either apply it as a topical ointment or take a vitamin supplement that has vitamin E in it. Also, vitamin C is good for the skin; so eating citrus fruits and vegetables, like broccoli and yams (sweet potatoes), can also clear up the skin parasites.

For a rash that is very extensive, such as associated with chicken pox, you can soak in an oatmeal bath. Run some hot water into a tub, add a cup of oatmeal (uncooked), and then let it "cook" for 10 minutes. Then take a bath, but be sure to not use any soap.

Helping Your Pet

When looking to help your pet with skin parasites, there are at least two natural cures you can use. The web site nativeremedies.com lists neem and garlic as excellent choices, and including them in your pet's diet can help eliminate the parasites. Also, wormwood, agrimony and lemongrass can be used to clean the skin and help clear parasites away.

How to Cool Down First- or Second-Degree Burns

How to Cool Down First- or Second-Degree Burns

First-degree burns damage the outer layer of skin, leaving a red and painful area at the burn site. Second-degree burns harm both the outer and inner skin layers. These painful burns can include swelling and oozing blisters. Third-degree burns, characterized by charred skin that turns white or creamy in color, need a physician's care. You can treat most first- and second-degree burns at home.

Instructions

    1

Rinse the burned area with cold water for 15 to 30 minutes until the pain subsides. If clothing is stuck to the burned area, run cold water directly over the clothing and see a doctor to remove the material. Before flushing a chemical burn, read the label of the product that caused the burn, as water can make some chemical burns worse.

    2

Take an over-the-counter pain reliever like aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen or acetaminophen.

    3

Cool down the burn with a room fan if the pain remains after the first 30 minutes of applying cold water and taking an over-the-counter pain reliever. Aim the fan directly at the damaged area of your skin.

    4

Wash any blisters that pop open on their own with soap and water and apply an antibiotic ointment.

    5

Cleanse the burned skin gently with soap and water or a Betadine solution once per day after 24 hours elapses to help the injured skin heal. Keep the area covered with dry, clean gauze between washings. Do not use adhesive-type bandages.

    6

Apply an over-the-counter sunburn cooling spray like Solarcaine to treat burns resulting from too much sun.

    7
Refrigerate aloe leaf for more cooling pain relief.
Refrigerate aloe leaf for more cooling pain relief.

Apply an over-the-counter lotion containing aloe, or even better, break off a leaf of the aloe plant and peel back the outer leaf layer, rubbing the gel-like sap on the injury. Place the unused portion of the aloe leaf in a plastic bag and put in the refrigerator to repeat as needed.

    8

Smear on an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment containing polymyxin B sulfate or bacitracin ingredients. This will ward off infections and speed up the healing process.

    9

Break open a Vitamin E capsule, as the damaged skin is starting to heal, and drip the oil over the burned area. This will help prevent scarring.

Macular Degeneration Alternative Medicine

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common vision disorder. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, it affects more than 10 million Americans and is the leading cause of vision loss in people over 60. This condition affects the macula, a part of the retina involved in central vision. It results in blurred vision or a blind spot in the middle of your vision. Natural treatment strategies that help slow AMD's progression are available, although there is no cure. Consult with a health care provider experienced in treating this condition naturally.

Supplementation

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, studies indicate a combination of antioxidants along with zinc slow the advancement of intermediate macular degeneration to an advanced stage, where vision loss is most prominent. Unfortunately, this treatment did not prevent the early stages of the disease from getting worse. Take the following nutrients daily: vitamin C (500 mg), vitamin E( 400 IU), beta carotene (15 mg), zinc (80 mg) and copper (2 mg). The formula Ocuvite Preservision contains all of these in the proper dosages.

Lutein, an antioxidant that provides plants with their orange, yellow and red color, protects beneficial enzymes in the eye and protects the macula from light damage. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, studies show people taking this supplement versus a placebo experienced less vision loss. Ask your doctor about an appropriate dosage. Zeaxanthin is another antioxidant known for its beneficial affects on eye health and is found in the same yellow, orange and red fruits and vegetables. Discuss an appropriate dosage with your doctor.

Herbal Therapy

Ginkgo has been proven to slow vision loss in people with AMD. Researchers believe the flavonoids in this herb account for this benefit. Take 160 to 240 mg daily. This herb has blood-thinning properties, so take it under the supervision of your doctor if you are taking blood-thinning medications like Warfarin.

Bilberry, traditionally used to treat eye problems, and grape seed contain similar flavonoids as ginkgo, so in theory they might be beneficial as well. No studies however, have been conducted specifically dealing with AMD. Take 120 to 240 mg twice a day and 50 to 150 mg once a day respectively.

Diet

Eat a diet low in saturated fat; saturated fat causes plaque buildup on the vessel walls and interferes with proper blood flow to various parts of the body, including the eye. Saturated fats are found in meat, other animal products like dairy and margarine. Eat lots of antioxidant-rich foods like fruits and vegetables of all colors. Yellow, red and orange plants as well as leafy greens are high in lutein and xanathin, two of the most beneficial antioxidants. You can get lots of vitamin E from soy, fish, wheat germ, nuts and seeds. Citrus fruits, potatoes and broccoli are rich in vitamin C.

Vitamins With Kelp

Vitamins With Kelp

Kelp is a brown seaweed that has carbohydrates, protein and essential fatty acids, as well as a high concentration of minerals. The nearly 30 minerals found in kelp include iodine, calcium, iron and magnesium. The vitamins in kelp include C, D and B complex. Kelp is available in supplements and vitamins, but it is still not known if kelp in this form is medically beneficial and there is no known therapeutic dosage.

Thyroid Supplements

Iodine is an important mineral in thyroid hormone production. Iodine deficiency can result in goiter, an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid, or hypothyroidism, which slows down body functioning and can lead to depression and fatigue. Due to the iodine found in kelp, some people take thyroid supplements that contain kelp in an attempt to improve the thyroid's functioning. However, the American Thyroid Association cautions that too much iodine, which can result from taking kelp, can be problematic, especially for those who already suffer from abnormal thyroid functioning. Since iodine deficiency is caused by lack of iodine in the diet, it is recommended that foods such as iodized table salt, cheese, eggs and yogurt be eaten regularly to maintain adequate levels of iodine in the body.

Kelp Lecithin B-6 with Cider Vinegar

Kelp can be found in weight loss supplements with lecithin, vitamin B-6 and cider vinegar. Some believe that this combination can accelerate weight loss because the body's metabolism can be manipulated into burning fat faster. However, there is no scientific evidence to support this claim.

Kelp Tablets with Bladderwrack

Kelp tablets can contain bladderwrack, which is a type of seaweed that is sometimes considered the same as kelp, although it is technically a different plant. As with the thyroid supplements with kelp, kelp with bladderwrack is taken by some to treat under-active thyroid, although the University of Pittsburgh cautions it may actually worsen the condition. This type of supplement may have the ability to treat heartburn due to swelling of the alginic acid in the bladderwrack when it contacts water, which forms a seal over the stomach. Other conditions that may be treated with kelp tablets containing bladderwrack include arthritis, hardening of the arteries and constipation, although it is unclear if the treatment is effective.

Menopause Natural Alternatives

Menopause is the end of fertility and the menstrual cycle. Women are thought to have reached menopause 12 months after their last period. Menopause is not a disease, but a natural process due to aging. There are both physical and emotional symptoms which affect every woman differently. During menopause a woman may have night sweats, hot flashes, sleep problems and mood changes. There are home remedies that have a history of working for menopausal women and relieving some or all of the symptoms.

Exercise More

The Mayo Clinic suggests regular exercise for relief of menopause symptoms. Exercise offers many benefits. It can help to reduce stress, which may trigger menopausal symptoms. Doing 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days can help with "cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and other conditions associated with aging," reports the Mayo Clinic. Any type of physical activity is helpful. Yoga is also a good choice. The Mayo Clinic reports that early studies show that yoga can help relieve hot flashes in premenopausal women. Also try Kegel exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor (see Resources). According to the Mayo Clinic, these types of exercises can help with urinary incontinence, one of the symptoms experienced by some menopausal women.

Relax the Body

The best ways to alleviate sleep disorders are to exercise and reduce or eliminate caffeine. Learn deep breathing, meditation, guided visualization or progressive muscle relaxation exercises to relax the whole body before bedtime. Also don't exercise right before bed. There are books as well as audio- and videotapes that can help a woman to learn these relaxation techniques.

Improve Your Diet

Eat a balanced diet every day. To get healthier add a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains to your diet. This increases your chances of getting all the nutrients your body needs. Also eat plenty of fiber. The Mayo Clinic suggests 20 to 35 g of fiber each day. Drinking lots of fluids every day is also important. Avoid or reduce your intake of high fat foods, alcohol, junk food and caffeine.

VItamins and Minerals

The Mayo Clinic also suggests eating foods high in calcium and vitamin D for the treatment of menopause symptoms. If this is not possible, take supplements. "Aim for 1,200 to 1,500 mg of calcium and 800 IU of vitamin D a day," suggests the Mayo Clinic. Some women have had success with taking vitamin E supplements in relieving hot flashes. Take 400 IU per day.

Using Herbs

There are other supplements that have helped alleviate menopause symptoms. Black cohosh is often recommended as a good treatment for menopause. Flaxseed oil is also a popular remedy for menopausal women due to its omega-3 fatty acid and phytoestrogen content; phytoestrogens are natural compounds found in foods that act like estrogen in the body.

Bee Pollen Cures for Allergies

Bee pollen is widely known as a natural cure for allergy sufferers. According to Dr. Tom Cowan of the Weston A. Price Foundation, bee pollen should be part of a wellness program designed to boost the immune system by correcting an imbalance in the adrenal gland which causes the allergic reaction that we know as hay fever.

The Importance of Using Local Bee Pollen

Use bee pollen gathered locally, which will contain traces of the particular plants that are causing your allergic reaction. This will help to correct your immune system's reactions to these allergens, easing your hay fever symptoms. You can find local bee pollen at a farmers' market in your area. Buying your pollen directly from a small-scale beekeeper also increases the odds that you are purchasing a high-quality product collected from healthy, happy bees.

Increase Your Dosage Over Time

In a small number of individuals, especially those who are allergic to bee stings, bee pollen can cause an allergic reaction, even precipitating anaphylactic shock. Start with a single grain of pollen, then take two the following day and double your dosage each succeeding day until you are taking about a teaspoon a day. If you notice any swelling in you throat or difficulty breathing, discontinue use and consult a physician immediately.

What to Look For When Buying Bee Pollen for Allergies

Look for bee pollen with a wide range of colors, because this indicates that it has been gathered from a wide range of flowers and will boost your immunity to a wide range of allergens. Buy pollen that is as fresh as possible, or has been frozen right after being gathered. If you can find pollen gathered from bees who are kept in unpolluted areas in your vicinity, then you will reduce your exposure to toxic herbicides and pesticides.

What Are Some Home Cures For Herpes?

What Are Some Home Cures For Herpes?

Herpes simplex virus is known as genital warts, cold sores, fever blisters, HSV-1 or HSV-2. It usually is seen as blisterlike outbreaks on the skin and inside the mouth. But can also lead to more serious types of body infections. For thousands of years, doctors have tried to find a cure, but HSV has proven to be persistent and hard to control. Recent studies suggest that HSV-1 is not strictly an infection of the mouth as was previously thought, and that it can be transmitted to the genital area and passed through transmission of body fluids in the same way HSV-2 is spread. There is no cure, but in many cases, the symptoms can be treated with simple methods and over-the-counter medications.

Relief of Symptoms

    - Maintaining good hygiene is imperative. Avoid touching the infected area, wash hands frequently, and keep fingernails clean to avoid transferring germs to the open sores.
    - Drink plenty of water to help flush the virus out of your body
    - Keep the infected area clean and dry. Clean gently with water and a mild soap, rinse thoroughly, and pat dry or use a hair dryer on a cool setting.
    - Cornstarch or a similar powder may be effective in keeping the area dry, but women should not use products containing talcum (often found in baby or body powder) because it may increase the risks of certain types of cancer.
    - Wear clothing that fits loosely and 100-percent cotton underwear to promote air circulation.
    - Ice packs placed directly on the infected area may soothe the pain and promote healing by suppressing the virus.
    - Some people report that warm baths help relieve the pain.
    - Avoid sex during outbreaks. Friction can prevent the blisters from healing.
    - Over-the-counter pain medications (ibuprofen, acetaminophen or aspirin) can help reduce fever and pain.

Dietary Supplements

Many sources on the internet claim that oils and supplements help--and some even go so far as to say cure--herpes. The fact is that herbal and dietary supplements do not require approval and testing by the FDA, so the claims are largely unproven. Check with your doctor before adding any herbal supplements to your diet, because just like medications, herbal remedies or dietary supplements can have drug interactions and unexpected side effects.

Oral Herbs and Supplements

    - Echinacea is used to stimulate the immune system and help fight infection. When taken over time, echinacea can lower white blood cell count. It may also interfere with certain drugs used to treat the immune system.
    - Siberian ginseng works to boost the immune system. When tested on herpes patients, it was found to reduce the frequency, severityand length of outbreaks.
    - Lysine is an essential amino acid found in food. Taking lysine supplements can help speed up recovery and reduce the chances of recurrence.
    - Bee products containing propolis, a substance collected by bees that contains natural antibiotic properties and is thought to boost the immune system.

Topical Ointments

    - Aloe vera is a substance found in the aloe plant that has natural healing and soothing properties. While topical aloe has no known side effects, many aloe vera lotions commonly sold contain very little aloe and are mostly made up of other ingredients, any number of which could irritate blisters and make the condition more painful.
    - Zinc in a topical form may relieve symptoms and help prevent recurrences of HSV-1 herpes (canker sores). It is not recommended for genital herpes.

Warnings

Always check with your doctor or health-care provider before taking any kind of herb or supplement. Several prescription medications for the treatment of herpes are available by prescription. Some home cures for herpes may make the problem more severe, so if symptoms persist or get worse, see your doctor. An estimated one out of four adult women in the United States suffer from this highly contagious infection. The infection can hide in the system for many years before erupting. Prevent the spread of sexually transmitted disease by using condoms. People can pass herpes to a partner before they know they have it.

Side Effects of Senna Tea

Senna tea is a strong herbal laxative for constipation, but is often marketed as a slimming or diet tea. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has yet to evaluate any form of senna for safety, efficacy and purity. Doctors warn against its prolonged use as the ingredient has been known to cause serious side effects.

Heart

Toxicologists say that long-term use of senna can cause serious electrolyte imbalance that may lead to arrhythmia (abnormal or irregular heartbeat) and worse, heart failure.

Colon

Doctors say that long-term intake of senna may damage the lining of your bowel and injure nerve endings to the colon. Furthermore, laxative abuse may cause colon pigmentation, which may increase the risk for the development of colorectal cancer.

Diarrhea and Constipation

Taking in senna may lead to chronic diarrhea, which will cause you to lose important nutrients. As the product is habit forming, your constipation may worsen after you stop drinking the tea.

Other Side Effects

Upon drinking senna tea, symptoms of allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing, closing of your throat and swelling of your lips, tongue or face may occur. You should also watch out for abdominal cramps and urine discoloration.

Cases

On file at the FDA are four deaths of women in their twenties and thirties who used diet teas containing senna. Six cases of young women in New York and Pennsylvania who experienced severe abdominal cramps after consuming herbal tea containing senna have also been reported.

Knee Class Exercises

Knee Class Exercises

The knee is an integral part of daily movement and balance. Having inadequate knee strength and flexibility can cause prolonged injuries that will make the simplest movements hard to perform. This is why knee exercises are so important, especially for those that exercise often since the knee will be used under more stress and for longer periods of time. The right knee class exercises will increase strength, flexibility, and balance. All knee exercises should be done after 5-10 minutes of light warm-up exercises to loosen the muscles.

Straight-Leg Lift

The straight-leg lift is an easy exercise that will help strengthen your knees, quadriceps, and gluteal muscles. You start by laying down on the floor on your back. Make sure your back is completely flat on the floor throughout the exercise to prevent any stress on your spine. Keep one leg straight and bend the other leg so your foot is flat on the floor. Next, lift your straight leg at least one foot off the floor without bending your knee and hold it in place for 5 seconds. Slowly let your leg down until it rests on the floor and repeat the exercise with your other leg. You want to repeat this exercise until you have done three repetitions with both legs.

Bent-Leg Raises

Bent-leg raises increase the strength of the quadriceps and stomach muscles, while helping knee balance. You'll start this exercise by sitting in a chair or using any piece of equipment you can sit on. Next, lift one leg up and keep the entire leg straight. Keep the leg in this position for at least 10 seconds. Let your leg down slowly after 10 seconds have gone by. Repeat this with your other leg and continue alternating legs until you have completed three repetitions with both legs.

Wall Sit

The wall sit is one of the more advance and difficult knee exercises to complete. First, you'll need to find an exercise ball. Place the exercise ball between a wall and your back and position the ball so it is resting on your lower back. Slowly bend your knees like your are going into a sitting position. The ball will roll up your back and provide the support you need as you move downwards. Stop moving downwards as soon as you are in a normal sitting position (i.e. your thighs are parallel to the floor). Hold this position for 10 seconds and then return to the standing position. Repeat this three times. This knee exercise strengthens the knee, abdominal muscles, gluteals, quadriceps, and hamstrings.

Single-Leg Dip

The single-leg dip is one of the best exercises for knee balance. For this exercise, you'll need to chairs or two stationery objects to use for balancing. Place the chairs at your sides and within easy reach. While holding the tops of the chairs, lift one leg up and slowly dip down by bending the leg that is on the floor. Hold your position for five seconds when you are halfway down to the floor and then slowly begin to rise. Repeat this exercise on each leg at least three times each.

How to Treat Adrenal Gland Exhaustion With Herbs

How to Treat Adrenal Gland Exhaustion With Herbs

If you have adrenal glad exhaustion, it's essential that you see a doctor to help you monitor your condition and recommend a course of action and maybe some prescription medication to take.

Regardless of whether or not you decide to take prescription medication, there are diet and lifestyle changes you can make as well as herbs that will help get your adrenal glands back to normal.

Instructions

    1

Stay away from caffeine, especially while your adrenals are healing. Caffeine is just about the worst thing for adrenal exhaustion. It is one of the reasons why it can happen in the first place; and it certainly makes it worse.

    2

Eat a healthy diet to help prevent adrenal fatigue. Adequate protein, whole grains, and plenty of fruits and vegetables will provide your body with all of the things it needs to return to a balanced state of health.

    3

Choose an adrenal tonic such as black cohosh, stinging nettle or triphala to help support and nourish the adrenal glands, especially if you live a stressful lifestyle. My personal favorite is stinging nettle. Adrenal gland tonics can be taken over the long term and even if your adrenals aren't fatigued.

    4

Choose an adaptogenic herb such as Siberian ginseng, fo-ti or astralagas. These are herbs that help your body as a whole adapt better to stress and keep the adrenal glands healthy.

Sea Salt Remedies

Sea Salt Remedies

Salt is used in a variety of applications, including cosmetics, cleaning agents and cooking. Nevertheless, there are many different types of salt on the market and not all are good for your body. Table salt is chemically treated and, in the process, vital nutrients are removed. Additives are also often added, which are chemicals that can be harmful to your health. Sea salt, collected from the evaporation of sea water, is a natural and simple remedy for a myriad of afflicting ailments.

Bathing

Soaking in a bathtub full of warm water and only 1 cup of sea salt can do wonders for your body, both externally and internally. A sea salt bath is known to alleviate joint pains from arthritis and counteract the effects of obesity. Defective glandular functions can lead to obesity. The absorption of sea salt helps to balance these functions. A sea salt bath also helps to heal wounds on the outside of the body and alleviates stress.

Gargling

Gargling a glass of warm water mixed with 1 to 2 tbsp. of sea salt is a simple and inexpensive treatment in place of purchasing expensive mouth rinses and medications. It is also a healthier, more natural means of ridding your body of harm instead of digesting manmade chemicals. Although it may not taste as good, gargling salt water can be used in place of minty mouthwashes to rid your mouth of bacteria. It also helps cure symptoms from allergies, colds and strep throat. The sea salt helps to decrease the swelling of the throat and alleviate any pain and itching.

Inhalation

A sea salt solution can also be inhaled through the nose as a method of curing a number of ailments. Mix 1 tbsp. of salt with 2 cups of water. Tilt your head back and gently inhale the warm, sea salt solution. It's best to do this over a sink with a handful of tissues available as this process can get a bit messy. The sea salt helps to reduce any inflammation in the nose. It alleviates pressure and rids the sinuses of congestion.

Exfoliant

Sea salt acts as an exfoliant when applied to the skin. A sea salt facial can be done by mixing 1 tbsp. of sea salt with 1 tbsp. of olive oil. Gently massage your face with the mixture for no longer than a minute before washing your face clean with fresh warm water. The facial clears dead skin and dirt and opens your pores. The scrub stimulates your body with the absorption of the natural minerals in the sea salt. It also helps to rid your body of toxins.

Hydrogen Peroxide Medical Use History

Hydrogen Peroxide Medical Use History

The compound H2O2, or hydrogen peroxide, has several uses in the home and the medical world. It helps to stimulate plant life and treat a number of ailments. Hydrogen peroxide use as a medical treatment began in the early 1900s and continued to grow until the 1940s. But prescription drug use soon saw the end of hydrogen peroxide research until recently when followers of alternative medicine began taking another look at this solution.

Time Frame

The benefits of hydrogen peroxide in medicine are still being learned. Its use as a medical treatment, however, can be traced back to the early 1920s. According to Dr. David G. Williams of Educate-yourself.org, the English medical journal Lancet reported that infusion of hydrogen peroxide was used to successfully treat pneumonia during an epidemic shortly after the first world war.

Growth

Father Richard Willhelm, the founder of Educational Concern for Hydrogen Peroxide, was dedicated to promoting the use of peroxide as a treatment. In the 1940s, Willhelm reported on the use of hydrogen peroxide to treat several ailments successfully. Among these were skin diseases, polio and bacteria-related mental illness.

Limitations

Interest in further research for hydrogen peroxide use began to slow in the 1940s. The developing system of prescription drugs diverted interest away from hydrogen peroxide uses. Hydrogen peroxide's low cost, combined with the fact that the product is not patentable, also contributed to attention being shifted elsewhere.

Misconceptions

Breast-fed babies get their first dosage of hydrogen peroxide therapy from their mother's milk. Breast milk contains a high amount of hydrogen peroxide. The first milk or colostrum contains even higher amounts, which according to Educate-yourself.org helps to stimulate the baby's immune system.

Potential

The growing alternative medicine field has spurred interest in hydrogen peroxide. According to educate-yourself.org, in the last 25 years more than 7,000 articles have been published on hydrogen peroxide use as a treatment. Educate-yourself.org goes on to say that hydrogen peroxide has shown promise in treating several illnesses, including some forms of cancer and emphysema.

Potato Cure for Warts

Warts are small, raised bumps on the skin caused by the human papillomavirus. Especially common among children but not uncommon in adults, warts can be embarrassing, annoying and sometimes painful. A number of natural remedies are said to cure and reduce warts. One of the oldest of these involves the use of a cut potato.

Potato Wart Cure History

The traditional "cure" for warts long ago (and sometimes still used today) was to cut a potato in half, rub one half of the potato on the wart, then bury the other half in the garden. Sometimes a prayer or incantation of some kind was said, and sometimes there were very specific instructions as to when, where, and how deep the potato should be buried. Many people seemed to find that this technique was very effective, but this could be due to the natural acids in potatoes, a positive mental attitude that the cure would work (much like the placebo effect, in which something works simply because a person believes it will), or a combination of the two. Regardless of the reasoning behind it, potatoes have been said to be effective at curing warts by many people through the years.

Rubbing Method

One of the most common contemporary methods of treating warts with potatoes is similar to the older method mentioned above, but it doesn't involve any sort of gardening. Simply cut a potato in half and rub one of the flesh sides against the warts twice a day for two weeks, regularly replacing the potato used for treatment with a new one, daily if possible. After this period of time, some improvement, if not elimination, of warts can usually be seen.

Potato Skin Method

In this method, peel the skin off the potato. Use a slice of the potato skin large enough to cover the affected area. Tape this slice to the warts, the inside toward your skin. Replace the makeshift potato bandage every night before bed.

Some people claim this method works in less than a week--more quickly than the rubbing method-- because potato skin contains more acids than potato flesh. It also helps that it is attached directly to the skin at all times.

Rosacea Light Therapy

Rosacea is a skin condition in which blood vessels in the face become inflamed. Symptoms include redness of the face, development of small acne-like bumps on the face, face dryness and irritation, a burning sensation in the eyes and a red nose. According to MayoClinic.com, rosacea is a progressive condition, meaning it will grow worse if left untreated. While its precise cause is unknown, several things can aggravate the condition, such as spicy foods, alcohol, sun exposure, stress, embarrassment, anger, strenuous exercise and some medications such as corticosteroids.

Laser Treatments

According to SkinCarePhysicans.com, lasers have been used to treat rosacea since the mid-1980s. A laser beam is an intensified beam of light (the word laser actually began as an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation). There are a variety of different laser treatments available for rosacea, all of which typically require one to three sessions of therapy at four- to eight-week intervals, as well as follow-up sessions. The most common laser treatment for rosacea is pulsed dye laser (PDL) treatment. According SkinCarePhysicians.com, studies have shown that PDL treatment can reduce redness caused by rosacea by up to 60 percent and also can reduce dryness, sensitivity, bruising, itching and flushing. While PDL treatment is perhaps the most effective form of laser treatment, this effectiveness comes at a price. According to SkinCarePhysicians.com, PDL treatment almost always produces temporary bruising. There are softer laser treatments available, such as the diode laser, KTP laser and the Nd:YAG laser treatments; however, they are less effective in reducing redness. For removing rhinophyma (a thickening of nose skin caused by long-term rosacea), Erbium:YAG laser and CO2 laser treatments produce the best results.

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy

Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy is a relatively modern technique that uses a non-laser light source for removing symptoms of rosacea. According to SkinCarePhysicians.com, the first IPL device was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1995. IPL therapy typically requires one to five sessions, as well as follow-up sessions. SkinCarePhysicians.com reports that the treatment can help reduce flushing, breakouts and redness and also can help make dilated blood vessels in the face disappear. However, because the procedure is relatively new, it is important to find a fully qualified professional to perform IPL therapy.

Warning

Patients with blood clotting disorders, a predisposition toward keloid scarring or diabetes should talk with a physician before receiving laser or IPL treatments, SkinCarePhysicians.com warns. These conditions could negatively affect the healing process, resulting in scarring. Also, most health plans do not cover laser or IPL treatments, which can cost between $300 and $600 per session.
