    Harvest a leaf from the outer edges of your aloe plant. These are the most mature leaves and contain the most antioxidants. Cut the leaf off on a diagonal.

    Set the leaves in a bowl with the tips facing upward and the cut edges facing downward. Let the brown juices drip out of the plant for 10 to 15 minutes. Discard the brown juices.

    Cut off the spiky edges of the leaf by scraping the sides with a paring knife.

    Fillet the leaf, cutting it in half so that you can see the insides.

    Scrape out the clear aloe gel from inside the leaf using a small teaspoon or butter knife. Be careful not to take out the yellow part of the leaf, which is found just under the green rind. This yellow membrane is called the latex and can cause severe cramping and diarrhea.

    Place the pieces of aloe vera gel at the bottom of a strainer. Rinse the aloe vera with the vinegar solution gently, turning over the pieces of gel to ensure that all sides have been rinsed. Doing so will wash away any extra latex that may be sticking to the gel.

    Add 2 tbsp. aloe vera gel and 6 oz. of citrus juice (such as grapefruit, lemon, orange or pineapple) to a blender. Blend until the aloe vera and juice are fully incorporated.

    Store your aloe vera juice in an airtight food storage container in your refrigerator. The juice should be consumed within two to three days.

From the Inside Out

    Though it may seem counterintuitive, one of the best ways to help your body fight off an external infection may be by working on it from the inside out. Some foods, supplements or vitamins may help if you take them upon first noticing the infection. Both bacterial and fungal infections can be reduced or defeated by taking a friendly bacteria like lactobacillus acidophilus, which can be found in capsules or in some yogurts. This strain of good bacteria helps to restore your body's balance of internal flora. Take garlic in food or in capsule form to enhance your immune system. The herb has been found to have antibiotic, antifungal and antiviral properties. Certain herbs like American ginseng and echinacea can help to boost the immune system, which will help your body to better deal with the infection. Have an extra few servings of yogurt a day, add in garlic to your lunch and dinner, and purchase some ginseng and echinacea. On the Skin Itself

    When traditional remedies and home remedies do not have the desired result, try homeopathic remedies. Effects of Coconut Oil on Herpes

    Virgin coconut oil has antimicrobial properties that have led many to believe that it is effective in treating herpes. The human body turns capric acid into monocaprin and lauric acid into monolaurin--both of which have been proven to have antiviral properties. These fatty acids work by demolishing the virus's lipid membrane, thus killing the virus. Leading the forefront in research on lauric acid's effects, Dr. Jon Kabara believes that coconut oil is not effective on herpes because it does not deliver enough of the active substances.

How Much is Enough?

    For maximum effect, Dr. Kabara's claim is that the body needs between three and nine grams per day of monolaurin to benefit from the antiviral effects. This translates to approximately 300 to 900 hundred milliliters of coconut oil per day--an amount which almost certainly would make you sick. Dr. Kabara, therefore, concludes that in order to get an effective therapeutic dose of monolaurin and monocaprin, it's best to skip the coconut oil in favor of supplements.

Warnings

    Research is ongoing, but currently, there is no scientific proof that ingesting coconut oil will alleviate symptoms of the herpes virus. There is emerging evidence of the power of the coconut to positively impact a myriad of other body functions.

Neti Pot Remedies

Neti pots have been used in India for centuries, but have now gained acceptance in the United States. They are an all-natural way to clear mucus and to open the nasal passages.

Neti Pots and How to Use Them

    Neti pots are small pots made of ceramic, glass or plastic which resemble small teapots. You fill them with a solution of one eighth to one quarter tsp. of salt and eight ounces of warm (not hot) purified or distilled water, then use the neti pot to pour the solution into the nasal cavity. To do this, you hold the pot in one hand, while tilting your head sideways over a sink. The side of your head that is on the same side as the hand holding the pot should be facing up. Put the spout into to the nostril on the side that is facing up and pour the saline solution into your nostril. The solution will drain out of your other nostril, carrying mucus and other gunk out with it.

Side Effects from Usage

    The first couple of times you use a neti pot will feel really odd and possibly uncomfortable, and you may get some of the solution down your throat, but you will get used to it. You may experience ear popping, which is from the change in pressure from the unblocking of the nasal passages. Some people choose to blow their noses afterward to get rid of the saltiness and to remove any remaining fluid or mucus. If you choose to do this, blow gently; harsh blowing could cause the solution to enter the sinus cavity or the tubes into the ears.

Further Directions and Cautions

    Some people with allergies or chronic sinus infections use a neti pot daily; others use one only when they feel congested or are getting sick. It should not be used by anyone under the age of 5, those who cannot tilt their head sufficiently to allow for drainage or those who have an ear infection. You should follow directions and talk with your doctor before using a neti pot if you are being treated for chronic sinus problems. Use of a neti pot is not designed to cure your sinus infection or allergy, but to give relief of symptoms like congestion.

Using Saki

    The best way to use saki to improve the appearance of circles under your eyes is look for cosmetics that have either whole saki (saki, sake, or concentrated sake), ethyl alpha-D-glucoside or koji acid listed on the label. Because the skin around the eyes is sensitive, it is best to look for a product that is made for use on that area and then to follow the directions for use.

    If you are adventurous, you can dab a cotton ball soaked in saki around your eyes. Let it sit for a few minutes before washing your face as you normally would. Be careful not to get any directly in your eyes and discontinue use if it makes your skin sting.

Individual counties within California --rather than the state government itself -- oversee their residents' participation in the program. Although applications to participate in the program must be approved by the state Department of Public Health, the individual counties receive the applications and then forward them to the state to be reviewed and processed.

    Get a diagnosis from a licensed physician stating that you have an ailment that qualifies you to participate in California's medical marijuana program. Patients are eligible for medical marijuana if they've been diagnosed with one of several conditions including AIDS, arthritis, cancer, migraines, muscle spasms and seizures. After the diagnosis, ensure that the physician fills out and gives you a copy of California Health & Human Services form COPH 9044, which verifies that you've been diagnosed with the condition.

    Find and contact the medical marijuana program in the county you live in. An alphabetical listing of all programs, including their full street addresses, phone numbers and business hours, is located on the California Department of Public Health website. A link to the list is included in the Resources section on this page. Once you locate the proper county agency, call or write to find out what the local guidelines are and to request a medical marijuana application form.

    Read and fill out the California Health and Human Service Agency's medical marijuana program application form after receiving it from your county's medical marijuana program. The four-page form has to be filled out fully and truthfully by the patient or an authorized caregiver. Failing to furnish all the requested information can result in the application being rejected.

    Return the completed application, fees and copies of any supporting documentation to your county's medical marijuana program in person or by mail and wait to hear back. Lymphedema Drainage Therapy

Lymphedema, or lymphatic obstruction, occurs when lymph nodes become blocked. The most common symptom of this condition is swelling, usually of one of the limbs. Massage therapists use a method called Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT) to help clear these blockages and provide relief from swelling and pain.

LDT

    LDT, a light, noninvasive massage, works by stimulating the natural movement of two to three layers of muscle along the lymphatic pathways---called lymphangions---which in turn drains stagnant fluid, toxins and waste from the blockage, according to an article by Dr. Bruno Chikly, a lymphatic expert who wrote a book on LDT and is quoted on the website massagetherapy.com. This process allows the body to produce more lymphocytes, or cells that work to bolster your immune response. LDT practitioners learn in which direction the body sends the obstructed waste and thus can mimic the body's natural rhythms to facilitate the drainage, or provide relief from chronic pain and muscle spasms.

Technique

    Because lymphatic rhythms vary from person to person, LDT works best when a practitioner learns a patient's specific pulsations. In addition, the therapist should apply gentle, firm and steady pressure, and not manipulate the body to do anything it wouldn't naturally do on its own. An LDT practitioner should be gentle enough to move the fluid without stimulating more filtration by the capillaries in the blood. Too much pressure can damage the capillaries and the tissue around the affected lymph nodes.

Contraindications

    If you are suffering from an infection or a virus, you should not undergo LDT until your symptoms have resolved. Those with cardiac issues should not get LDT at all, as this therapy can add stress to the heart. Those with circulatory problems also should avoid LDT, as it could induce a blood clot. If your massage therapist notices an unusual lump anywhere on your body, she should refrain from performing LDT and advise you to see a doctor immediately. Finally, those who have experienced trouble with bleeding should avoid LDT, as it can cause a hemorrhage.

According to Australasian College of Health Sciences, a single teaspoon of tincture has the equivalent medicinal potency of one cup of an herbal tea infusion. You can learn how to make a tincture at home inexpensively in a few steps.

    Clean and sort through your herbs, discarding any yellow or moldy parts. Joyce A. Wardwell, in her book "The Herbal Home Remedy Book," suggests chopping up the herb, which helps promote extraction of the herbs medicinal properties by opening up the plant cell walls.

    Fill up 2/3 of the glass jar with the chopped herbs. Pour in the alcohol, filling it up almost all the way to the brim, leaving about 1 inch at the top for headroom.

    Stir the contents of the jar mix the herbs and alcohol thoroughly. This also helps to release any trapped air bubbles, which tend to cause spoilage.

    Cover the jar tightly and then shake its contents thoroughly for one or two minutes. Label and date the jar clearly.

    Place the jar in a dark, warm place and let it sit to allow the herbs soak (macerate) for the next four to six weeks (the longer you can leave it the better). Alternatively, you can place the jar in a paper bag, which can work just as well.

    Shake the glass jar vigorously twice or thrice a day over this period. Check to ensure that the chopped herb material remains covered in the alcohol, and add more alcohol as needed.

    Strain the herb material from the liquid (tincture) using muslin or cheesecloth. You may have to repeat this two or three times to strain all of the herb material from the tincture. Wrap the cloth around the herbs and wring or squeeze them through the cloth to extract every last drop.

    Pour the strained tincture into a dark-colored glass bottle. Label the bottle, including the day's date and then store it in a dark, cool place.

    Use your tincture by diluting one teaspoon of tincture in at least 1/4 cup of water or a glass of juice.

Diatomaceous earth, also known as DE and fossil shell flour, is a chalk-like material composed of the fossilized remains of single-celled algae-like plants called diatoms, which is where the name diatomaceous comes from. Dont confuse natural (food-grade) DE with pool-grade DE, which has been heat-treated, creating crystalline silica that are not safe to breathe.

    To mammals, DE feels like a powder, but for insects its a dangerous desiccant that dries the outer waxy exoskeleton. Its sharp edges also cut the exoskeleton, making internal fluid bleed out. DE therefore provides two mechanisms for drying out a bug, yet is safe to use around pets and children.

Pet Pests

    Apply DE to pet and farm animal coats to kill fleas and flies. Bedding and carpeting should also be dusted thoroughly. Vacuum it up after two to three days. Dont dust the carpet heavily or your vacuum could get clogged. Because fleas lay so many larvae, youll need to apply the DE twice a week for three weeks to kill off each new hatching.

    You can protect stored grain from pests with DE. The DE can be separated from the grain later on easily enough, but need not be, since it is edible. According to Dirt Works, an adequate ratio is 1 cup of DE for every 50 lbs. of grain. This translates into 1 lb. of DE for every 300 lbs. of grain.

Oligomeric pranthocyanidins (OPCs) grapeseed or pine-bark extract tablets come in 100-milligram doses, which you should take daily to improve the strength and flexibility of your blood vessels (See Reference 2).

Circulatory Problems

    To further reduce swelling in your legs, take herbs that generally help improve circulation, such as a tea made from horsetail. It can help improve circulation by strengthening the walls of your arteries and veins. The herbs Siberian ginseng, gingko biloba and ginger root can be used as a tea or in capsule form to improve circulation in the body. When taking the pill forms, try 300 milligrams of Siberian ginseng, 240 milligrams of gingko biloba, and 250 milligrams of ginger root.
    The homeopathic remedy tabacum is often used for those who have icy cold legs, limb cramps and mental fatigue. A low potency of 12c or lower (where c is equal to 100 times the standard homeopathic potency) a few times a day will work best with tabacum.
    These remedies, when taken in tandem with swollen leg herbs, may be able to improve your condition in less time than if they were taken alone (See Reference 1).

Hepatitis C

    To some degree, you may be able to help your leg swelling by attacking the hepatitis C condition itself. Use herbs such as milk thistle and licorice to protect and heal your liver. Try a combination of apple cider vinegar, fulvic acid, tea tree oil, hydrogen peroxide and oil of oregano, as it has been found to be an effective home remedy for some who suffer from the disease. Maybe you've begun to experience mental blocks more frequently than usual. Or perhaps while you've been in the middle of a conversation, you suddenly draw a blank and are unable to think of the perfect word to complete your sentence. These are all examples of poor cognitive function. Just as the muscles of your body will lose their strength when they are not worked, your brain will lose its ability to function when it is not exercised. Therefore, performing brain exercises each day can help your brain become sharper than ever before.

The Five Cognitive Functions

    As you become older, your ability to remain mentally strong begins to decline; your cognition is responsible for this. However brain exercises can help improve your cognitive ability.

    Within your brain, there are five main functions which comprise your cognitive abilities: memory, visual-spatial skills, language, attention and executive function. Stimulating these functions on a regular basis helps improve your cognitive abilities.

Memory

    Memory plays the largest role in every cognitive function and activity your brain participates in, including reasoning and mental calculations. A variety of memory types are at work in your brain each day; however, you may not recognize them until one of them begins to fail you.

    To exercise this function of cognition, try memorizing the words to a song you don't know; this helps boost the chemical acetycholine, which is responsible for improving memory skills.

    You can also try using your non-dominant hand for activities such as brushing your teeth, or attempt to get dressed in the dark; this forces the opposite side of your brain to begin working and thinking during these activities.

Attention

    A good attention span is required in nearly every aspect of life; it assists you in concentration during times when you are surrounded by noise and distraction, while helping you multitask.

    One way to exercise this function is by changing the route you take to a particular place each day, such as school or work. This forces your brain to wake up from its old habits and pay attention.

    You can also combine activities, which helps your brain learn to multitask. When you walk or jog, listen to an audio book or music CD. While driving, force yourself to devise some mental math problems to solve. Both of these force your brain to work on more than one thing at a time.

Visual-Spatial

    This function enables you to interact within your environment more efficiently and become more aware of your surroundings.

    Begin by staring straight ahead, taking in as many objects as possible both directly in front of you and within your peripheral vision. An hour later, write down every object you can remember seeing. This a terrific workout for your brain.

    Another effective exercise is to walk into a room and find five different objects, taking in their locations. Two hours later, force yourself to remember what the objects were and where they were located. This exercise not only forces you to use your memory, but also trains your brain to focus on its surroundings.

Laetrile Effectiveness

Laetrile is a special compound derived from plants, raw nuts and the pits of fruits like apricots, bitter almonds, peaches and plums. Laetrile contains amygdalin, which is a compound consisting of cyanide and sugar. Laetrile has been used by some cancer victims in an effort to fend off the disease because the cyanide in laetrile is believed to offer cancer destroying benefits. Laetrile also contains prunasin and benzaldehyde, both of which are believed to be blockers of cancer cells.

The Use of Laetrile

    The use of Laetrile is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. When Laetrile was tested on cancer patients, the supplement was provided through orally consumed pills or injection. Usually, the supplement is offered intravenously for a period of time, and the patient then follows up with oral doses for maintenance therapy. While this supplement has been made available on the Internet, the U.S. government is taking steps to cease all Internet sales of the substance.

Overall Effectiveness

    Laetrile has illustrated a few anticancer benefits when it has been tested on animals and humans. A case series involving 44 cancer patients that used Laetrile in the early 1950s, indicated that those patients that experienced improvements in their condition received anticancer drugs, radiation therapy and Laetrile supplements. Thus, the supplement use was combined with other treatment forms, and the case series does not reveal the true effectiveness of Laetrile, if any.
    A second case series conducted in the early 1960s involved 10 patients with cancer that had spread to various parts of the body. They were given Laetrile via intravenous injection. The primary benefit reported by the patients was pain relief, a reduction of lymph node swelling and a decrease in the size of tumors. Long-term studies were not conducted on the 10 patients.
    When Laetrile breaks down inside your body, benzaldehyde is created. Some patients diagnosed with advanced cancer have responded well to the use of benzaldehyde, even after not having positive results with standard cancer treatments. Some patients actually saw all the symptoms and signs of cancer disappear while others were noted to have a decrease in the size of cancerous tumors.

Negative Laetrile Studies

    Director Vincent DeVita Jr., the director of the National Cancer Institute, performed human testing on Laetrile on 156 patients at the Minnesota Mayo Clinic, the New York City Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center and the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center. All patients tested had some form of advanced cancer no longer treatable via standard cancer treatment methods. Patients received Laetrile via intravenous injection for three weeks, and three times a day by oral consumption.
    The results of the study showed that Laetrile had little to no positive effect. Disease progression was identified in 50 percent of the patients within 30 days time, and 90 percent of the patients within a period of 90 days. One-fifth of all patients tested survived eight months.

Potential Side Effects

    The side effects of Laetrile are significant. The side effects you will experience when using Laetrile are those that are commonly associated with cyanide poisoning. Side effects can include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, skin discoloration attributed to oxygen deprivation, damage to the liver, hypotension, droopy eyelids, coordination difficulty, nerve damage, fever, confusion, coma and death. Due to the serious side effects associated with this supplement's use, and the lack of long-term studies conducted on the use of Laetrile, this supplement cannot be recommended until further studies are conducted.
