How to Treat a Stomach Ache With Natural Medicine

How to Treat a Stomach Ache With Natural Medicine

Tummy ache, belly ache, upset stomach, indigestion, no matter what you call it a stomach ache is uncomfortable. While many people treat stomach aches with over-the-counter liquids, chewable or dissolvable tablets, some of the best treatments for a stomach ache are natural and chemical-free. Read on to learn how to treat a stomach ache with natural medicine.

Eat yogurt, which is full of natural healthy bacteria that can help soothe a stomach ache. Often a stomach ache is caused due to lack of bacteria that helps to break down food, meaning the stomach acids that help break down food are working over-time causing pain, cramping and acid reflux.

Peel a small piece of ginger and slowly chew the root, swallowing the medicinal juices. Ginger has been used in natural medicine to treat stomach aches, nausea and to aid in digestion for centuries and can quickly relieve the pain naturally.

Squeeze the juice from one whole fresh lemon into a cup of hot water and drink. The hot water helps to flush the stomach while the lemon helps break down food, easing the work of stomach acids and relieving a painful stomach ache naturally and efficiently.

Add five or six drops of lavender essential oil to a few cups of rice, stirring until well combined. Place the rice in an old tube sock and tie the end. Place the rice-filled sock in the microwave just until hot and place the sock over the painful area of your stomach. This natural treatment will quickly relieve cramping, and works well for menstrual symptoms as well.

Tibetan Medicine Help for Restless Legs

Tibetan medicine is increasingly popular in the west for a host of ailments. People are looking for alternative ways to deal with common problems, such as restless leg syndrome. Tibetan Medicine uses a gentle and holistic approach, focused on achieving overall mental and physical balance as a method for treating symptoms.

Tibetan medicine

Tibetan medicine is based on an Indian tradition known as Ayurvedic Medicine, but in the last few hundred years has branched out on its own and become inextricably intertwined with the country's Buddhist spirituality. (References 3)

From Ayurvedic medicine, it borrows the concept of three natural humors: wind, bile, and phlegm, and the need to balance these three factors to achieve wellness. But as Buddhism became the primary religion of the Tibetan people, Tibetan medicine came to link physical wellness to mental and spiritual wellness, and now incorporates Buddhist ideas and even occasional practice into its treatment. (References 3)

A patient is diagnosed based on a three-step process: interview (or physical examination), a reading of the body's twelve pulses, and urinalysis. The interview is used to discover the patient's personal and medical history. The twelve pulses are read from six positions on each of the patient's wrists. Variations in the width, depth, strength, speed and quality of the patient's pulses are used to diagnose the disease, locate it, and understand what it's doing to the body. The urine is examined for color, bubbles, and deposits of other substances.

Based on this information, the doctor decides where the patient's bodily systems are out of balance, and he or she changes the patient's diet and lifestyle, accordingly. (References 3) These changes are sometimes behavioral, such as beginning meditation practice, exercise, counseling, or altering sleep habits. They can also be nutritional, with the patient beginning a new diet regimen, eliminating excesses in certain foods that may put their body out of balance.

Should these tactics fail, Tibetan doctors may then apply a series of gentle, natural medicines, ranging from powders to pills to syrups. (References 3, Resources 2) They can be prescribed in many different combinations, usually unique to the patient's particular condition and changing as the condition improves or worsens.

Finally, there are physical therapies, usually saved for the most extreme cases, when the first two tactics fail. They can involve acupuncture, massage and inhalation therapy, among others. Once again, it is the doctor who decides which therapy best fits the patient's condition.

Restless leg syndrome

Restless leg syndrome is a compulsive, uncontrollable movement of the legs at night. It is characterized by an uncontrollable desire to move the limbs, uncomfortable sensations in the limbs, general motor restlessness and a worsening of these symptoms with relaxation. (Resources 1)

Tibetan Medicine and Restless Leg Syndrome

The first round of treatment in Tibetan medicine in approaching restless leg syndrome would therefore be a change in the patient's diet and habits. (References 3, Resources 2)

Should this prove unsuccessful, various medications might be tried, among them nervine sedatives and tonics, rasayanas, and cool diapanas. (References 1)

Acupuncture, or golden needle treatment, is also a possibility for restless leg syndrome, as it repairs the flow of energy through the body. (References 2) However, this treatment would only be used if the changes in diet and herbal remedies were unsuccessful.

How to Treat ADD or ADHD Without Drugs

Children who suffer with ADD/ADHD may also struggle with low self-esteem and poor performance in school. Attention deficit disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder are closely related conditions that include a combination of problems such as difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior, according to the Mayo Clinic. Some parents of children diagnosed with ADD/ADHD are successful treating the condition without drugs. There are some natural remedies available parents can try that offer relief from symptoms without the risk of side effects.

Maintain a regular schedule for meals, naps and bedtime. Use a calendar to show upcoming special activities for your child. Typically, it is difficult for children with ADD/ADHD to accept and adjust to change. Avoid unexpected transitions from one activity to another.

Improve your child's diet. Give your child plenty of high protein foods such as eggs, meats, nuts, seeds and beans. A high protein diet helps some children focus better. Also include plenty of whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables.

Eliminate junk food from your child's diet. These foods have a high amount of calories, low nutritional value and lack essential vitamins and minerals. Examples of junk food include chips, candy, hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, French fries and onion rings. Some junk food also contains artificial food color and additives that fuel hyperactive behavior in children.

Provide your child with an adequate amount of rest. Fatigue can make the symptoms of ADD/ADHD worse. Consequently, try to prevent your child from becoming overtired.

Identify and try to avoid situations that may be difficult for children with ADD/ADHD. An example of this type of situation is sitting through a long presentation.

Enroll your child in behavioral therapy, also referred to as psychosocial treatment. The therapist teaches specific techniques geared toward the child, parents, teachers and extended family.

How to Fight Cancer With Antioxidant Foods

How to Fight Cancer With Antioxidant Foods

It's no secret that the nutrients in many fruits and vegetables have been found to fight cancer by preserving healthy cells. Some foods keep cancer from taking hold, while others help the body to defy deadly carcinogens. No single food can guarantee that you'll never get cancer, but some simple changes in your diet can reduce your risk of getting cancer--and keep you healthier longer.

Make sure your diet is high-fiber, low-fat and rich in antioxidants by eating plenty of vegetables and fruits, especially strawberries and spinach. Fruits and vegetables in your diet help to reduce your chances of getting gastrointestinal or respiratory-tract cancers.

Follow the suggested number of servings from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's food pyramid to get the proper amount of daily nutrients. Note that the USDA also recommends a fiber intake of 20 to 30 grams per day.

Limit the amount of fatty meats you eat. A diet high in fat has been linked to colo-rectal and prostate cancers. Saturated fat (prevalent in red meats) may raise your risk factor not only for cancer but also for heart disease.

Consume soy and other beans to reduce your risk of colon cancer. These also increase your fiber intake.

Season your meals with garlic and onions, which are rich in antioxidant oils and interfere with certain cancer-causing enzymes.

Drink black and green teas daily for their antioxidant properties. These tea varieties thin the blood and act as anti-cancer agents.

Natural Ways & Products to Cleanse Your Body

Natural Ways & Products to Cleanse Your Body

Our bodies are constantly under attack from toxins in our food and environment, which can negatively impact our overall health. It is important to occasionally cleanse the body of these toxins to help your body function optimally. Fortunately, there are many different products and ways in which you can cleanse your body of these toxins.

Fasting is a natural way to cleanse without using any products. The process involves drinking at least 12, 8-oz. glasses of water each day to flush your system of pollutants. Additionally, you will want to drink two glasses of water during the day with 1 tbsp. of honey, 2 tsp. of lemon juice, 3 to 4 tbsp. of cider vinegar and a dash of cayenne pepper mixed together. Fasting can last three to 10 days. After completing the fast, you should reintroduce food slowly and carefully, eating fruits and vegetables for the first two to three days.

Saunas are an effective way for the body to eliminate toxins through sweat. Temperatures in steam-type saunas are between 90 to 120 degrees. Temperatures in a dry-type sauna can be more than 150 degrees. When you sit in this type of heat, your body will sweat to try and cool itself, and will eliminate pollutants that are in your skin. Additionally, it is important to drink plenty of water to help flush toxins out of your body. The use of saunas to cleanse have been popular in Europe for hundreds of years.

Cleansing diets are mainly designed to cleanse the digestive system but can be beneficial for detoxifying other parts of your body as well. These diets usually involve lots of fruits and vegetables, high-fiber products like flax seeds or psyllium, and beneficial bacteria known as probiotics. Foods that have sugar, caffeine and chemicals and processed foods are eliminated from the diet. It is important to drink plenty of water. These diets usually last one to three weeks. Once the cleanse is complete, ease back into your normal diet.

There are many cleanser products available on the market today. These usually involve taking a supplement in pill or powder form every day for a few weeks along with a good diet of natural, organic foods. Popular options might include acai berry, psyllium fiber or grapefruit extract, which have been shown effective at cleansing the digestive system. Be sure to consult your physician before starting a cleanse with these over-the-counter products.

How to Use Saw Palmetto to Treat Enlarged Prostate Glands

How to Use Saw Palmetto to Treat Enlarged Prostate Glands

Saw palmetto is believed to be an effective supplementary treatment for enlarged prostate glands. This dwarf palm, native to the southern Atlantic coast in the United States, is thought to affect the hormones which cause enlarged prostate glands.

Understand How Saw Palmetto Treats Enlarged Prostate Glands

Use saw palmetto in the hopes of avoiding the surgery that is often required to unblock your urethra. Patients suffering from enlarged prostate glands often develop urinary tract disorders due to blockage.

Treat the enlarging effect that testosterone has on your prostate with saw palmetto. The extract is thought to inhibit testosterone's interaction with your prostate gland, thereby blocking its enlargement.

Expect improved flow of urine and a decrease in the frequency with which you must urinate when you use saw palmetto. Taking saw palmetto to treat enlarged prostate glands is also may soothe the sensation of urination urgency.

Use Saw Palmetto Safely

Make sure you have a proper diagnosis of your condition. Enlarged prostate glands, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH, must be diagnosed by your regular physician.

Keep your expectations realistic. While many men suffering from BPH have reported positive effects after using saw palmetto to treat their conditions, the scientific jury is still out. Relatively few studies have been conducted in regards to saw palmetto's actual effects on the body.

Watch for side effects. While most patients report no side effects at all, some people who take it complain of stomach discomfort, nausea and vomiting, constipation or diarrhea, erectile dysfunction and enlarged breasts.

Be aware that while there is no evidence linking saw palmetto with serious side effects, there have been cases which seem to correlate its use with a variety of unpleasant conditions. These include insomnia, inflammation of the liver or pancreas, breathing issues, depression, irregular heartbeat, heightened blood pressure and chest pain.

Stop taking saw palmetto at once if you experience any of the serious side effects. Report any side effects to your doctor if these do not go away within a few days of starting your saw palmetto treatment.

Theta Healing Technique

ThetaHealing technique teaches people how to use their natural intuition by connecting to the Creator.

Vianna Stibal, a naturopath, massage therapist, and intuitive reader, developed ThetaHealing in 1995 and credits its use for healing her of cancer. Stibal believes the technique uses a theta brain wave to achieve an instant healing.

What are Theta Waves?

The brain produces four types of waves: alpha, beta, delta and theta. Theta is the slowest brain wave, generally achieved only in deep meditation or as drifting off to sleep.

The aim of ThetaHealing is to achieve a clear and focused state to connect to the "energy of all that it is."

Belief and Feeling Work

Stibal also believes that when a person is in a theta state, he can change subconscious limiting beliefs. The Belief and Feeling Work of ThetaHealing gives people the ability to change negative emotions, feelings, and thoughts into positive, beneficial ones.

Self Help

Stibal views ThetaHealing as therapeutic self-help that people can use to develop the ability to change physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

How to Use Primrose Oil as an Antioxidant

How to Use Primrose Oil as an Antioxidant

The popularity of evening primrose oil has gained momentum recently, especially after the revelation that it contains antioxidant properties. Antioxidants reverse the effects of aging by counteracting the damaging effects of oxidation.

Use Primrose Oil to Halt the Effects of Aging

Look for the main ingredient. Researchers have identified the antioxidant compounds in evening primrose oil. Your formula should contain a yellow substance called catechin.

Use a topical formula. An ointment can be prepared by mixing the diced plant with heated petroleum jelly. It can be applied directly to your skin.

Take capsules or tablets of primrose oil to use it as an antioxidant. It can be ingested throughout the day according to the dosage schedule. These formulations can be bought at health food stores, pharmacies and major supermarkets.

Consult with an herbalist or alternative health care practitioner to determine the right formula and dosage for you. Depending on your antioxidant needs, you may have to use a formula with additional vitamins or minerals to produce desired results.

Store your primrose oil in a cool, dry place. Topical formulas should be stored in a tightly closed jar and refrigerated to maintain effectiveness. Keep capsules and tablets away from heated areas like the kitchen or bathroom.

Alternative Treatment for Second Degree Burns

Second-degree burns reach down to the dermis, the second layer of skin. They usually cause blisters that may ooze, as well as pain and redness. Burns compromise the skin's ability to protect the body from infection so proper treatment is important. Many natural therapies can help heal second-degree burns but you should not attempt to treat them on your own; seek out medical care for initial treatment. You should also consult a doctor about any natural therapies you want to use to be sure they are appropriate.

Nutritional Supplements

Many natural supplements can help your body heal. Omega-3 fatty acids, like those found in fish oil decrease inflammation, promote healing and strengthen immunity; take one to two capsules or one tbsp. twice a day. Vitamin C encourages the growth of new tissue and strengthens the skin; take 1,000 mg one to six times per day. Vitamin C tolerance is determined by diarrhea. If you experience diarrhea, lower the dose until you find one that does not cause it. Vitamin E at 400 to 800 IU daily encourages healing. Once the burn has healed and new skin has grown in, you can use it topically.

Herbal Therapy

Internally, turmeric supplements can treat pain and inflammation; take 300 mg three times a day.

Certain herbs can be applied externally but are not appropriate as the first line of treatment for a second-degree burn. You need to seek medical attention. These are best used after the healing process has begun and new skin has grown in. Aloe vera, either as a cream or gel, is soothing and helps the skin heal; apply three to four times a day. Calendula ointment has a long history of use in treating external skin conditions; use as directed on the product label. Gotu kola cream containing one percent of the herb can repair damaged tissue. Propolis, a substance used to build bee hives, has a long history of use for treating skin injuries; use as directed on the product label.

A professional homeopath might recommend the following treatments for first and second-degree burns. Use as directed on the product label.

Hypericum perforatum, applied topically, treats burns accompanied by sharp, shooting pains. Urtica urens, taken orally, treats itching, stinging burns. Causticum, taken orally, alleviates pain accompanied by rawness of the skin.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) can relieve the pain of burns, especially when the electrical stimulation is applied to acupuncture points on the ear.

How to Prepare Aloe Vera Juice at Home

How to Prepare Aloe Vera Juice at Home

The health benefits of aloe vera go far beyond soothing a sunburned back. The earliest mention of aloe vera being used for medicinal purposes dates back to the 16th century B.C.E. in ancient Egypt. The plant, which contains over 20 beneficial amino acids, is known for its anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties. Aloe vera juice, which is made from the gel inside the leaves of a mature plant, is used primarily to treat a host of intestinal and digestion problems such as heartburn, colitis, ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome.

Harvest a leaf from the outer edges of your aloe plant. These are the most mature leaves and contain the most antioxidants. Cut the leaf off on a diagonal.

Set the leaves in a bowl with the tips facing upward and the cut edges facing downward. Let the brown juices drip out of the plant for 10 to 15 minutes. Discard the brown juices.

Cut off the spiky edges of the leaf by scraping the sides with a paring knife.

Fillet the leaf, cutting it in half so that you can see the insides.

Scrape out the clear aloe gel from inside the leaf using a small teaspoon or butter knife. Be careful not to take out the yellow part of the leaf, which is found just under the green rind. This yellow membrane is called the latex and can cause severe cramping and diarrhea.

Mix together 2 tbsp. vinegar with 1 cup water.

Place the pieces of aloe vera gel at the bottom of a strainer. Rinse the aloe vera with the vinegar solution gently, turning over the pieces of gel to ensure that all sides have been rinsed. Doing so will wash away any extra latex that may be sticking to the gel.

Add 2 tbsp. aloe vera gel and 6 oz. of citrus juice (such as grapefruit, lemon, orange or pineapple) to a blender. Blend until the aloe vera and juice are fully incorporated.

Store your aloe vera juice in an airtight food storage container in your refrigerator. The juice should be consumed within two to three days.

Home Remedies for a Cold, Cough & Sore Throat

While there is no cure for the common cold, there are ways to stop an oncoming cold in its tracks, or at least lessen the discomfort and its duration. While you can make a trip to the drug store for relief, you probably have the makings of effective cold, cough and sore throat remedies right in your own kitchen cabinets.

Bacteria multiplies in mucous, so cleansing your nose and throat of excess mucous can help reduce the infection. Blow your nose frequently. Mix a teaspoon of salt in an eight ounce bottle of water. Keep it in the bathroom and gargle with it several times a day.

Extra fluids help loosen the mucous in your nose and chest, so drink plenty of fluids. Water is excellent, but herbal teas have added benefits. Peppermint tea is a natural decongestant, ginger tea soothes the stomach, and thyme is an expectorant, which helps you to cough more productively. In addition, the warmth of tea can be soothing.

If your throat is sore and raw, swallow a teaspoon of honey every few hours. Not only does honey coat the throat and soothe it, but honey is a powerful natural antibiotic.

Chicken soup is not just an old wives tale. It has anti-inflammatory properties and reduces the the activity of white blood cells. Add some garlic, a natural antibiotic, or a dash of cayenne pepper to clear your sinuses.

If you're all stuffed up, add a few drops of eucalyptus oil in your warm bath water and sink into it. The eucalyptus will act as a vaporizer, and the warm bath will be soothing and help you relax.

Home Remedies for a Skin Infection

Home Remedies for a Skin Infection

When it becomes clear that you have a skin infection, your first inclination is to see a doctor. However, with insurance requirements and the busy schedules of doctors, sometimes the infection can spread rapidly by the time you finally get a prescription. Here are some natural ways to take care of skin infections from the inside out, on the skin itself and with homeopathic remedies. It may still be a good idea to consult your doctor before trying new treatments.

From the Inside Out

Though it may seem counterintuitive, one of the best ways to help your body fight off an external infection may be by working on it from the inside out. Some foods, supplements or vitamins may help if you take them upon first noticing the infection. Both bacterial and fungal infections can be reduced or defeated by taking a friendly bacteria like lactobacillus acidophilus, which can be found in capsules or in some yogurts. This strain of good bacteria helps to restore your body's balance of internal flora. Take garlic in food or in capsule form to enhance your immune system. The herb has been found to have antibiotic, antifungal and antiviral properties. Certain herbs like American ginseng and echinacea can help to boost the immune system, which will help your body to better deal with the infection. Have an extra few servings of yogurt a day, add in garlic to your lunch and dinner, and purchase some ginseng and echinacea. Start this regimen immediately and continue it through the end of your infection.

On the Skin Itself

Once you've gathered your internal supplements, it's time to treat the infection right at the source. Tea tree oil can attack both fungal and bacterial infections when applied directly to the infected area. It can now be found at many pharmacies and natural food stores. Hydrogen peroxide is particularly effective for fungal infections and may help with bacterial functions as well. Dab it on with a cotton ball or create a skin soak by adding 1 cup of the peroxide to 1 gallon of water. Vinegar works in a similar way to hydrogen peroxide by attacking the infection with its acidity. Bleach is a much harsher remedy that can destroy fungus and bacteria, though many people are very sensitive to it. Try mixing a capful of bleach with a cup of water and dabbing it onto the area with a cotton ball. Wash your skin thoroughly afterwards with soap and water. Try one of these methods for a couple of days to test it, and if you have no results move on to one of the other remedies.

Other Remedies

When traditional remedies and home remedies do not have the desired result, try homeopathic remedies. Either consult a licensed homeopath or visit a natural foods store such as Whole Foods and buy the remedy that sounds similar to the symptoms you are experiencing. Calendula is a topical homeopathic remedy that can help heal skin rashes and stop the spread of infection. It can help the infection heal more quickly and is also effective for cuts and scrapes. Graphites is an oral remedy that is used for skin infections that include cracking and crusting skin that has a honey-colored discharge. Take Graphites if your infection is connected with an earache or a cold and a feeling of sluggishness. Sulphur is a remedy to use when your infection is accompanied by inflamed and red mucous membranes, eczema and acne. You can use the Calendula liberally on your infections and you can take Graphites or Sulphur in low 6C doses a few times a day to see if symptoms clear up.

Uses of Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon essential oil is a remarkably versatile product. From making fruit stay fresh longer (soak them in a bowl of water with a few drops of oil) to banishing warts (rub oil into them twice daily until they disappear), it's an item that everyone should keep stocked at home.

When used for aromatherapy, lemon essential oil is known to raise people's spirits, making them feel clear-headed and improving their concentration.

A wide variety of foods and beverages can be flavored with lemon essential oil, such as tea, salad dressings, vegetables, chicken and cheesecake.

This oil is a powerful antibacterial agent that makes it excellent for household and hospital cleaning. It is strong enough to kill germs related to such life-threatening illnesses as typhoid, pneumonia and diphtheria.

Lemon oil is an astringent that cleans oily skin and makes it look brighter. The appearance of freckles can also be reduced by applying diluted oil to them.

Lemon is known for its refreshing scent, which is why the oil is used with diffusers to make homes smell clean and for personal fragrances.

Ingesting the oil can soothe or cure numerous ailments, from improving your immunity and fighting infection and fevers, to assisting in waste elimination and treating anemia.

About Coconut Oil Cures for Herpes

Coconut oil is widely touted as a miracle food with claims that it can cure a myriad of diseases like viruses, bacteria, parasites and fungi. On the other end of the spectrum, it's considered a high-fat food with dangerous implications for heart health. Emerging research supports theories of the coconuts beneficial effects, but does it indeed treat and kill viruses like the herpes virus? To better understand how coconuts (and coconut oil) can treat viruses, we must first learn a little more about this often overlooked "superfood."

The Coconut

Coconuts (cocos nucifera) boast a rich concentration of both short- and medium-chain fatty acids like lauric acid (which been widely used in cosmetics and soap and is also known to have antiviral and antibacterial properties) and capric acid (known to have antimicrobial properties). The size of the chains is an important distinction because our bodies metabolize the fat differently depending on its size. Coconuts are mainly medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) while meat, dairy and eggs are mainly long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs). Research is emerging that MCFAs lower the risk of heart disease and does not negatively impact cholesterol levels.

General Benefits

In many island cultures, the coconut is a main staple in the diet. These communities largely consider the coconut to having healing powers and use it to treat conditions like asthma, flu, abscesses, kidney stones, gonorrhea, bronchitis, earaches and upset stomachs. Modern medicine is researching the health benefits of the coconut and is investigating benefits like killing viruses (influenza, hepatitis, herpes), killing bacteria (those that cause ulcers, pneumonia, gingivitis, urinary tract infections and gonorrhea), killing fungi, killing parasites (tapeworms, giardia and lice). From a dietary standpoint, the coconut provides a good source of energy and seems to support healthy digestion.

The Herpes Virus

Oral herpes results in cold sores (usually on the mouth) and genital herpes results in lesions on the genitals. This common virus affects up to 80 percent of the adults in the United States (orally with cold sores) and as many as one in four adults are infected with the genital infection. The virus can flare up (when it causes cold sores or genital lesions) and then enter a stage of dormancy with no symptoms.

Effects of Coconut Oil on Herpes

Virgin coconut oil has antimicrobial properties that have led many to believe that it is effective in treating herpes. The human body turns capric acid into monocaprin and lauric acid into monolaurin--both of which have been proven to have antiviral properties. These fatty acids work by demolishing the virus's lipid membrane, thus killing the virus. Leading the forefront in research on lauric acid's effects, Dr. Jon Kabara believes that coconut oil is not effective on herpes because it does not deliver enough of the active substances.

How Much is Enough?

For maximum effect, Dr. Kabara's claim is that the body needs between three and nine grams per day of monolaurin to benefit from the antiviral effects. This translates to approximately 300 to 900 hundred milliliters of coconut oil per day--an amount which almost certainly would make you sick. Dr. Kabara, therefore, concludes that in order to get an effective therapeutic dose of monolaurin and monocaprin, it's best to skip the coconut oil in favor of supplements.

Research is ongoing, but currently, there is no scientific proof that ingesting coconut oil will alleviate symptoms of the herpes virus. There is emerging evidence of the power of the coconut to positively impact a myriad of other body functions.

How to Prevent Bowel Cancer

Bowel cancer, or colorectal cancer, is a type of cancer that originates in the tissues of the rectum or large intestine (colon). It is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in the Western world. There is no sole cause for bowel cancer. Almost all bowel cancers start out as benign (non-cancerous) polyps, which gradually develop into cancer. Bowel cancer is often associated with red meat, low-fiber and high-fat diets. However, by eating selective fruits and vegetables with anti-cancer properties, you can effectively prevent bowel cancer.

Consume plenty of citrus fruits. These types of fruit contain potent compounds, called monoterpenes, that prevent colon cancer by flushing carcinogens out of your body. Consume citrus fruits every day.

Eat shiitake mushrooms. These fungi include powerful compounds, called lectin and lentinan, that build your immune system to prevent bowel cancer. These compounds can also target developing cancer cells and stop them from spreading.

Consume plenty of broccoli. This vegetable contains a powerful phytochemical called sulforaphane, which prevents bowel cancer. Sulforaphane also stimulates specific enzymes in your body that can neutralize carcinogens and free radicals. Eat 2 cups of broccoli daily.

Eat fresh, raw garlic. Garlic contains compounds called dialyl sultides that prevent bowel cancer by increasing and stimulating your immune cells to break down cancer-causing cells. Dialyl sultides also prevent carcinogens from invading normal cells and slow tumor development. Crush 1/2 cup of fresh, raw garlic and drink it with one glass of water.

Consume plenty of red grapes. These include potent substances, called resveratrol bioflavonoids, which prevent the development of bowel cancer cells. Grapes also include the chemical ellagic acid, which blocks enzymes that cancer cells need to grow and spread. Eat 2 cups of red grapes every day.

Health Benefits of Hot Tubs

There are a number of health benefits of hot tubs for people who need temporary relief from stress and those who suffer from chronic illnesses. Hydrotherapy works by providing the right amount of heat to massage the body, producing a relaxing effect. They also provide therapeutic effects as well for people in pain.

Stress and Migraines

Sitting in a relaxing hot tub eases stress related to migraine headaches.

Relaxing in a hot tub at night can help individuals sleep better. The National Sleep Foundation states that soaking in a hot tub can help the body transition and get ready for deep sleep (see Resources).

Joint and Muscle Pain

Hot tubs have a relaxing effect on tight joints and muscles after a strenuous workout; they help with blood circulation.

The Arthritis Foundation states that hydrotherapy alleviates some of the pain associated with arthritis. In addition to relaxing in hot tubs, arthritis sufferers can also perform flexibility exercises in the hot tub (see Resources).

The "New England Journal of Medicine" states in initial studies that health benefits of hot tubs for people with diabetes include decreased blood sugar levels and blood pressure, as well as weight loss.

What Vitamins & Minerals Are Good for Brain Function?

What Vitamins & Minerals Are Good for Brain Function?

Many vitamins and minerals are good for the brain. They provide nourishment so the brain can carry out its vital functions. While you go about your activities, your brain struggles to maintain the delicate balance of chemicals and electrical pulses that keep you thinking, remembering, concentrating, walking, and talking. Any deficiency in the vitamins and minerals that maintain this intricate dance can have lasting effects.

Vitamin Bs

The B vitamins, such as B1, B12, and folic acid, are important for a healthy brain and nervous system. The body requires Vitamin B1 for myelin production. Myelin, a protective coating around nerve fibers, enables communication data to pass from one nerve cell to the next. The development of Alzheimer's disease is connected to low levels of vitamin B12 and folate, according to a 2001 study in "Neurology." Alcohol, caffeine and too much sugar destroys B vitamins. More physical or psychological stress demands more B vitamins. Diets rich in whole grains, leafy green vegetables, and beans restock the body's store of B vitamins.

Magnesium is a mineral that is key to healthy brain function in several ways. Biochemical energy fuels the brain and requires a sufficient and stable amount of magnesium for production. Without magnesium the brain's power and metabolism decline. Magnesium maintains the correct balance between sodium and potassium within the cells. An improper balance between the two can cause a cell to burst. Magnesium helps eliminate toxic ammonia from the body. Even slight increases in brain ammonia impair concentration. Taking a supplement is the most effective way to increase magnesium.

Alpha Lipoic Acid

Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is a powerful antioxidant that easily crosses the blood-brain barrier, the wall between the brain tissues and circulating blood. ALA works to convert glucose to energy. It can work in both water and fatty tissues, unlike vitamins C and E. The process of turning food to energy creates free radicals which weaken the immune system and damage the body's cells, tissue and organs. Alpha lipoic acid destroys free radicals and recharges depleted antioxidants, making them effective again. The best way to increase ALA is through supplements.

Vitamin E and Selenium

Vitamin E and selenium work together to destroy free radicals in the brain. They are much stronger together than separately. Vitamin E increases oxygen in the brain and strengthens the brain's capillaries and red blood cells. It maintains the proper balance of blood clotting while dissolving blood clots to prevent strokes. Selenium removes heavy metals, like mercury, arsenic and lead, which harm the brain by displacing minerals like zinc, copper and iron. Fatigue and stress exhaust Vitamin E. Eat brown rice, oats and eggs to increase Vitamin E.

Neti Pot Remedies

Colds, congestion and sinus infections are a fact of life, especially during the fall and winter months. However, that does not doom you to months of not being able to breathe or pumping yourself full of drugs in order to muddle through the season. Neti pots have been used in India for centuries, but have now gained acceptance in the United States. They are an all-natural way to clear mucus and to open the nasal passages.

Neti Pots and How to Use Them

Neti pots are small pots made of ceramic, glass or plastic which resemble small teapots. You fill them with a solution of one eighth to one quarter tsp. of salt and eight ounces of warm (not hot) purified or distilled water, then use the neti pot to pour the solution into the nasal cavity. To do this, you hold the pot in one hand, while tilting your head sideways over a sink. The side of your head that is on the same side as the hand holding the pot should be facing up. Put the spout into to the nostril on the side that is facing up and pour the saline solution into your nostril. The solution will drain out of your other nostril, carrying mucus and other gunk out with it.

Side Effects from Usage

The first couple of times you use a neti pot will feel really odd and possibly uncomfortable, and you may get some of the solution down your throat, but you will get used to it. You may experience ear popping, which is from the change in pressure from the unblocking of the nasal passages. Some people choose to blow their noses afterward to get rid of the saltiness and to remove any remaining fluid or mucus. If you choose to do this, blow gently; harsh blowing could cause the solution to enter the sinus cavity or the tubes into the ears.

Further Directions and Cautions

Some people with allergies or chronic sinus infections use a neti pot daily; others use one only when they feel congested or are getting sick. It should not be used by anyone under the age of 5, those who cannot tilt their head sufficiently to allow for drainage or those who have an ear infection. You should follow directions and talk with your doctor before using a neti pot if you are being treated for chronic sinus problems. Use of a neti pot is not designed to cure your sinus infection or allergy, but to give relief of symptoms like congestion.

Detox With Saki for Dark Circles Under the Eyes

Age, stress and fatigue all take a toll on your skin. The skin around your eyes is especially susceptible to changes due to stress. One of the most common changes is the formation of unattractive, dark circles under the eyes. Better sleeping habits can help reduce the appearance of dark circles, but it may not be enough. Compounds within the popular Asian rice wine, saki, can help detoxify the skin and significantly reduce the appearance of dark circles beneath the eyes.

Active Compounds

Saki contains compounds that, when used topically, can improve the tone, quality and appearance of your skin. In an animal study conducted by researchers at Gifu University in Japan and published in the February 2007 issue of Bioscience, Biotechnology and Biochemistry, scientists found that saki helped to fight the appearance of aging in the skin. Specifically the compound ethyl alpha-D-glucoside improved the lipid content of skin. Higher lipids in the skin make it look softer and help to smooth out wrinkles. The same compound also helped the corneocytes--cells located in the top layer of skin--to differentiate better, and reduced the thickness of the corneocytes, both of which improve the look of your skin.

In addition to supporting the structure of the skin, the kojic acid in saki also helps to lighten the skin. In a review of safety evidence regarding the use of kojic acid to lighten skin, researchers found that kojic acid poses little or no risk to consumers. This study was reported in the January 2004 issue of Food and Chemical Toxicology.

When taken together, these active compounds within saki have the power to improve the appearance and color of the skin around your eyes, eliminating dark circles.

Using Saki

The best way to use saki to improve the appearance of circles under your eyes is look for cosmetics that have either whole saki (saki, sake, or concentrated sake), ethyl alpha-D-glucoside or koji acid listed on the label. Because the skin around the eyes is sensitive, it is best to look for a product that is made for use on that area and then to follow the directions for use.

If you are adventurous, you can dab a cotton ball soaked in saki around your eyes. Let it sit for a few minutes before washing your face as you normally would. Be careful not to get any directly in your eyes and discontinue use if it makes your skin sting.

Papaya Enzymes Vs. Digestive Enzymes

Papaya Enzymes Vs. Digestive Enzymes

Enzymes are crucial in the digestive process. The National Institutes of Health says that some digestive enzymes help digest carbohydrates and others help with the breakdown of proteins. A number are produced by the body while others can be taken as a supplement.

Papain is an enzyme that comes from the tropical papaya fruit. Papain helps break down proteins during digestion. It can be taken as a supplement to assist with protein digestion.

Lactase is an enzyme produced in most people. Lactase helps break down the milk protein, lactose. A shortage of this enzyme causes lactose intolerance.

Protease is another enzyme that helps break down proteins. It is produced in the pancreas and intestines.

Amylase is an enzyme that assists with the digestion of starches and carbohydrates. It is produced in the mouth, intestines and pancreas.

The enzyme lipase is required for the digestion of fats. It also enables the absorption of nutrients into the intestines.

How to Obtain an MMJ Card in California

How to Obtain an MMJ Card in California

The state of California's medical marijuana program allows patients who are suffering from various medical conditions to use cannabis for medicinal purposes. Individual counties within California --rather than the state government itself -- oversee their residents' participation in the program. Although applications to participate in the program must be approved by the state Department of Public Health, the individual counties receive the applications and then forward them to the state to be reviewed and processed.

Get a diagnosis from a licensed physician stating that you have an ailment that qualifies you to participate in California's medical marijuana program. Patients are eligible for medical marijuana if they've been diagnosed with one of several conditions including AIDS, arthritis, cancer, migraines, muscle spasms and seizures. After the diagnosis, ensure that the physician fills out and gives you a copy of California Health & Human Services form COPH 9044, which verifies that you've been diagnosed with the condition.

Find and contact the medical marijuana program in the county you live in. An alphabetical listing of all programs, including their full street addresses, phone numbers and business hours, is located on the California Department of Public Health website. A link to the list is included in the Resources section on this page. Once you locate the proper county agency, call or write to find out what the local guidelines are and to request a medical marijuana application form.

Read and fill out the California Health and Human Service Agency's medical marijuana program application form after receiving it from your county's medical marijuana program. The four-page form has to be filled out fully and truthfully by the patient or an authorized caregiver. Failing to furnish all the requested information can result in the application being rejected.

Return the completed application, fees and copies of any supporting documentation to your county's medical marijuana program in person or by mail and wait to hear back. As of April 2011, the application fee is $66, or $33 for patients already participating in California's Medi-Cal health program. However, counties are also allowed to add administrative costs to the application fee; the county costs vary from location to location, so if you're mailing the application, check with the county to find out what the total fee will be.

Lymphedema Drainage Therapy

Lymphedema, or lymphatic obstruction, occurs when lymph nodes become blocked. The most common symptom of this condition is swelling, usually of one of the limbs. Massage therapists use a method called Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT) to help clear these blockages and provide relief from swelling and pain.

LDT, a light, noninvasive massage, works by stimulating the natural movement of two to three layers of muscle along the lymphatic pathways---called lymphangions---which in turn drains stagnant fluid, toxins and waste from the blockage, according to an article by Dr. Bruno Chikly, a lymphatic expert who wrote a book on LDT and is quoted on the website This process allows the body to produce more lymphocytes, or cells that work to bolster your immune response. LDT practitioners learn in which direction the body sends the obstructed waste and thus can mimic the body's natural rhythms to facilitate the drainage, or provide relief from chronic pain and muscle spasms.

Because lymphatic rhythms vary from person to person, LDT works best when a practitioner learns a patient's specific pulsations. In addition, the therapist should apply gentle, firm and steady pressure, and not manipulate the body to do anything it wouldn't naturally do on its own. An LDT practitioner should be gentle enough to move the fluid without stimulating more filtration by the capillaries in the blood. Too much pressure can damage the capillaries and the tissue around the affected lymph nodes.

If you are suffering from an infection or a virus, you should not undergo LDT until your symptoms have resolved. Those with cardiac issues should not get LDT at all, as this therapy can add stress to the heart. Those with circulatory problems also should avoid LDT, as it could induce a blood clot. If your massage therapist notices an unusual lump anywhere on your body, she should refrain from performing LDT and advise you to see a doctor immediately. Finally, those who have experienced trouble with bleeding should avoid LDT, as it can cause a hemorrhage.

How to Make a Tincture Herbal Extract at Home

How to Make a Tincture Herbal Extract at Home

Herbal remedies such as herbal tinctures are centuries-old natural cures dating back to prehistoric times. A tincture is a potent herbal extract that is derived from medicinal herbs. According to Australasian College of Health Sciences, a single teaspoon of tincture has the equivalent medicinal potency of one cup of an herbal tea infusion. You can learn how to make a tincture at home inexpensively in a few steps.

Clean and sort through your herbs, discarding any yellow or moldy parts. Joyce A. Wardwell, in her book "The Herbal Home Remedy Book," suggests chopping up the herb, which helps promote extraction of the herbs medicinal properties by opening up the plant cell walls.

Fill up 2/3 of the glass jar with the chopped herbs. Pour in the alcohol, filling it up almost all the way to the brim, leaving about 1 inch at the top for headroom.

Stir the contents of the jar mix the herbs and alcohol thoroughly. This also helps to release any trapped air bubbles, which tend to cause spoilage.

Cover the jar tightly and then shake its contents thoroughly for one or two minutes. Label and date the jar clearly.

Place the jar in a dark, warm place and let it sit to allow the herbs soak (macerate) for the next four to six weeks (the longer you can leave it the better). Alternatively, you can place the jar in a paper bag, which can work just as well.

Shake the glass jar vigorously twice or thrice a day over this period. Check to ensure that the chopped herb material remains covered in the alcohol, and add more alcohol as needed.

Strain the herb material from the liquid (tincture) using muslin or cheesecloth. You may have to repeat this two or three times to strain all of the herb material from the tincture. Wrap the cloth around the herbs and wring or squeeze them through the cloth to extract every last drop.

Pour the strained tincture into a dark-colored glass bottle. Label the bottle, including the day's date and then store it in a dark, cool place.

Use your tincture by diluting one teaspoon of tincture in at least 1/4 cup of water or a glass of juice.

How to Treat Razor Burn With Oatmeal

How to Treat Razor Burn With Oatmeal

Razor burn is a skin condition created when the skin area around each hair follicle is irritated after shaving, causing red, raised bumps. An oatmeal bath or mask can be used to soothe the skin and reduce the irritation.

Treat Razor Burn With an Oatmeal Mask

Cook oatmeal according to the instructions on the package. While instant oatmeal may be as effective as organic rolled oats when you treat razor burn, you should completely avoid any sweetened or flavored varieties of oatmeal.

Add one egg white to the cooked oatmeal once it has cooled down a bit. Fold in the egg white until you achieve a smooth, creamy consistency that will adhere easily to your face. You can also add a little baking soda to the oatmeal, which will help relieve the itching that can occur with razor burn.

Apply the oatmeal to the area affected by razor burn. Spread the oatmeal in a smooth, even coat.

Let the oatmeal mask dry completely on your face in order to treat your razor burn. You will know when it is time to remove the mask when you can feel the oatmeal pulling at your face.

Rinse the oatmeal mask off your face with cool to lukewarm water. Avoid using hot water, which can irritate your skin further.

Treat Razor Burn With an Oatmeal Bath

Dissolve 1 to 3 cups of colloidal oatmeal (oatmeal that has been milled into a fine powder) into a cool to lukewarm bath. Stir the bath water thoroughly to break up any clumps of oatmeal, especially on the bottom and the sides of the tub.

Soak in the tub for at least 15 minutes, ensuring that the area with razor burn is completely submerged underwater for the entire length of the bath. Be careful not to allow any of the water to splash up into your eyes, which will definitely cause irritation.

Rinse your body completely with clear, cool water before you exit from the tub. The tub may be slippery due to the oatmeal, so be careful when you get out.

Treat the area with razor burn carefully when drying by patting gently with a thick absorbent towel to remove all excess moisture.

What Are the Benefits of Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth?

What Are the Benefits of Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth?

Diatomaceous earth, also known as DE and fossil shell flour, is a chalk-like material composed of the fossilized remains of single-celled algae-like plants called diatoms, which is where the name diatomaceous comes from. Dont confuse natural (food-grade) DE with pool-grade DE, which has been heat-treated, creating crystalline silica that are not safe to breathe.

Crawling Pests

To mammals, DE feels like a powder, but for insects its a dangerous desiccant that dries the outer waxy exoskeleton. Its sharp edges also cut the exoskeleton, making internal fluid bleed out. DE therefore provides two mechanisms for drying out a bug, yet is safe to use around pets and children.

Pet Pests

Apply DE to pet and farm animal coats to kill fleas and flies. Bedding and carpeting should also be dusted thoroughly. Vacuum it up after two to three days. Dont dust the carpet heavily or your vacuum could get clogged. Because fleas lay so many larvae, youll need to apply the DE twice a week for three weeks to kill off each new hatching.

Internal Parasites

Incorporate a few pinches into your pets daily diet to kill off parasites in the GI tract. Several zoos have done this, including the Brookfield Zoos of Chicago; the zoo in Buffalo, New York; and the Whispering Winds Animal Sanctuary in Riverside, California. Note that this is not effective against heartworms, which do not generally reside in the GI tract.

Grain Storage

You can protect stored grain from pests with DE. The DE can be separated from the grain later on easily enough, but need not be, since it is edible. According to Dirt Works, an adequate ratio is 1 cup of DE for every 50 lbs. of grain. This translates into 1 lb. of DE for every 300 lbs. of grain.

How To Prevent Non-Communicable Diseases

Diseases which are not contagious are called non-communicable diseases (NCD). These diseases are a consequence of behavioral, hereditary or standard of life factors, such as smoking and an improper diet. Examples of non-communicable diseases include diabetes, cancer, mental illness, common injuries and heart disease. By employing all of the natural preventive measures below, you can safely and effectively defend your body against non-communicable diseases.

Exercise every day. Physical activity removes disease-causing toxins through sweat. It also prevents cardiovascular disease, respiratory problems and reduces the risk of cancer and diabetes. It is recommended to perform at least 30 minutes of exercise.

Eat foods high in lecithin. Lecithin is a potent substance that regulates cell nutrients. It also helps you maintain an ideal body weight and helps prevent your body from accumulating unnecessary fat. Foods rich in lecithin include soybeans, grains, legumes and peanuts.

Consume foods high in antioxidants. The active ingredients of antioxidants are called flavonoids. These substances keep the brain healthy and prevent cancer and other non-communicable diseases. Foods rich in antioxidants include cranberries, dried prunes, plums and pinto beans.

Train the brain. Playing video games and solving crossword puzzles everyday can help exercise the brain and prevent memory loss and deterioration. Performing these activities on a daily basis will improve all of the regions of the brain.

Do yoga every day. Yoga strengthens the mind and body. It prevents lifestyle diseases, especially cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses. Yoga can also relieve symptoms of diseases once they manifest. One hour of yoga is recommended.

How to Maintain Industry Indoor Air Quality Standards Using Plants

How to Maintain Industry Indoor Air Quality Standards Using Plants

Many industries focus on energy efficiency by installing central heating and air-conditioning systems, and sealing cracks and windows to create airtight buildings. These energy conservation practices often reduce the outside air supply and create industry health problems like eye, nose, throat and skin irritation, headaches and fatigue.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) research on indoor plants found that living plants are so efficient at absorbing contaminants that some plants will be launched into space as part of the biological life support system for future orbiting space stations. You can use these same plants to maintain excellent indoor air quality in industrial buildings on planet earth.

Learn what plants act as efficient air filters to revitalize the air quality in industrial buildings with reduced airflow and toxic gas problems. Some of the most useful plants that clean the air inside buildings and absorb potentially harmful gases include: Bamboo Palm (Chamaedorea Seifritzii), Areca Plam (Chrysalidocarpus lutescens), Golden Cane Palm (Dypsis lutescens), Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema Modestum), English Ivy (Hedera Helix), Gerbera Daisy (Gerbera Jamesonii), Dracaena "Janet Craig," Dracaena Marginata, Mass cane/Corn Plant (Dracaena Massangeana), Mother-in-Law's Tongue (Sansevieria Laurentii), Pot Mum (Chrysantheium morifolium), Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum), Money Plant or Golden Pothos (Epipremnum aureum).

Choose ornamental flowering plants that complement the colors of your office. Flowering plants such as the Gerbera daisy (Gerbera jamesonii) and chrysanthemum (Leucanthemum) are extremely potent in purifying interior air and are also lovely to look at. They are easy to care for and available in a myriad of colors.

Place 3 to 4 Areca Palm plants (Chrysalidocarpus lutescens) near individuals with allergies or asthma because they clean allergens from the air and increase oxygen.

Use Golden Pothos, Philodendron and Spider Plants to reduce formaldehyde and other major pollutants. NASA researchers found these to be the three most effective plants for removing toxins in problem areas with poor air quality caused by plastics, synthetic fibers, lubricants, rubber, pesticides, new carpets laden with formaldehyde, copying machines, radon, second-hand smoke and more.

Use Mother-In-Law's Tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata) to remove carbon dioxide from the building and increase oxygen levels at night. Most plants increase oxygen supply during the day only but the Sanseveria maintains indoor air quality and oxygen levels at night as well.

Calculate how many plants you need to effectively clean the air. Bring in 15 to 20 plants in 6-inch pots or larger for a 2,000 square foot space, . You can also calculate the number of plants needed by the number of people in the space. Bring in approximately four 18-inch high plants for each person.

Care for your plants properly by watering them as needed.
Care for your plants properly by watering them as needed.

Take proper care of the plants. The plants suggested are all easy to care for and will thrive if you water them as needed and give them an adequate growing environment. For maximum air quality, put plants together strategically in groups instead of scattering single plants. Maximize air exposure to the plant root soil zone by clipping off lower leaves. Regularly wipe dust off the plants leaves to maximize air exposure to the leaves, where many toxins in the air are removed by the plant.

Water plants reqularly and keep plant leaves free of dust.

Alternative Remedies for Swollen Legs From Hepatitis C

Alternative Remedies for Swollen Legs From Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C sufferers notoriously suffer from liver problems, but they can also be susceptible to developing swollen legs that are beset with rashes and pain. Luckily, there are many herbs and supplements that can help treat swollen legs and a few that may help fight the disease itself. As with any new course of treatment, consult with your physician before deciding to follow the herbal path.

Swollen Ankles and Legs

Treatment of swollen legs may take up to six months, but it can be extremely effective if you are diligent and don't skip any doses. Take one Butcher's Broom ruscogenin tablet a day, which is typically a dose of 100 micrograms, to treat burning and itching on your leg. Try a 60- to 120-milligram dose of gotu kola liposome tablets or capsules to stabilize the tissues supporting your veins and to increase the amount of oxygen transported through your body. Horse chestnut aescin tablets can be taken in a 150-milligram dose once a day to improve the elasticity of blood vessels. However, do not take gotu kola or horse chestnut if you are trying to become pregnant.
Hawthorn solid capsules, when taken in a 150-milligram dose three times a day, can make fragile veins stronger. Oligomeric pranthocyanidins (OPCs) grapeseed or pine-bark extract tablets come in 100-milligram doses, which you should take daily to improve the strength and flexibility of your blood vessels (See Reference 2).

Circulatory Problems

To further reduce swelling in your legs, take herbs that generally help improve circulation, such as a tea made from horsetail. It can help improve circulation by strengthening the walls of your arteries and veins. The herbs Siberian ginseng, gingko biloba and ginger root can be used as a tea or in capsule form to improve circulation in the body. When taking the pill forms, try 300 milligrams of Siberian ginseng, 240 milligrams of gingko biloba, and 250 milligrams of ginger root.
The homeopathic remedy tabacum is often used for those who have icy cold legs, limb cramps and mental fatigue. A low potency of 12c or lower (where c is equal to 100 times the standard homeopathic potency) a few times a day will work best with tabacum.
These remedies, when taken in tandem with swollen leg herbs, may be able to improve your condition in less time than if they were taken alone (See Reference 1).

Hepatitis C

To some degree, you may be able to help your leg swelling by attacking the hepatitis C condition itself. Use herbs such as milk thistle and licorice to protect and heal your liver. Try a combination of apple cider vinegar, fulvic acid, tea tree oil, hydrogen peroxide and oil of oregano, as it has been found to be an effective home remedy for some who suffer from the disease. Eat a healthy diet and cut out all alcohol and drugs to improve your body's natural ability to fight the disease. If you're unhappy that your doctor is unconvinced about this course of treatment and you want to explore it, see a licensed homeopath or naturopath to learn more about alternative remedies (See Reference 3 and Resource 2).

Raw Honey Remedies

Raw Honey Remedies

Honey, rich in minerals, has been known since ancient times for its healing and medicinal properties. An old Bible proverb likens pleasant sayings to a honeycomb, both sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. In modern times, honey with its antiseptic and antibacterial properties, can be used as a natural remedy to alleviate and heal a variety of health issues.

Raw Honey

Straight off the honeycomb, raw honey is unheated, unprocessed and pure. Because processing and heating destroys some of the properties in honey, raw honey is considered more nutritious. Often it contains particles from the comb as well as flecks of pollen. It is low in water content and begins to crystallize after a month or two. High in antioxidants and rich in vitamins and minerals, the content of honey varies depending on where it comes from. Some of the vitamins and minerals in honey include vitamin B, calcium, potassium, silica, iron, copper, phosphorous and magnesium.

Colds and Allergies

To help alleviate a sore throat, a teaspoon of raw honey soothes discomfort and reduces inflammation. Studies have shown that honey is as effective as over the counter medication at treating cough symptoms. To make your own cough syrup, combine two ounces of glycerin, six ounces of honey with the juice from two lemons. Take this as needed to help alleviate your cough. Raw honey is especially effective in relieving allergy symptoms. The pollen, dust and mold in honey helps patients build up an immunity to the very things that cause their allergy symptoms. For best results, buy your raw honey at a local farm as they contain the same strain of dust and mold as that which affects you during allergy season. Start taking a spoonful of honey every day about two weeks before allergy season starts.

A natural antiseptic, raw honey aids in healing and helps prevent scars. Apply honey to a burn, cut or scrape. Not only does it aid in the healing process, but it soothes your skin as well. If you have an infection or eczema flare-up, apply honey and cinnamon in equal amounts to the area for relief. Used in many commercial skin care products, you can make your own natural products at home using raw honey. For dry skin, combine 2 tbsp. of milk with 2 tbsp. of honey, apply the mixture to your face and leave it on for 10 minutes before you rinse. For breakouts and acne, apply a thin layer of honey to your face for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse.

Honey has been used to help digestion for centuries. We now know that the enzymes found in flower pollen, and indirectly in raw honey, aid in the digestion of starchy foods especially. Honey also is an alkaline-forming food, so it can be used as an antacid. Take a spoonful of honey when acid reflux symptoms begin. To get rid of nausea, combine the juice from half a lemon with a spoon of honey. For healthy weight gain in children, a spoon of honey in milk gets their digestive system going and causes hunger. Children younger than 1 year should never consume honey.

Brain Exercises to Improve Cognition

Maybe you've begun to experience mental blocks more frequently than usual. Or perhaps while you've been in the middle of a conversation, you suddenly draw a blank and are unable to think of the perfect word to complete your sentence. These are all examples of poor cognitive function. Just as the muscles of your body will lose their strength when they are not worked, your brain will lose its ability to function when it is not exercised. Therefore, performing brain exercises each day can help your brain become sharper than ever before.

The Five Cognitive Functions

As you become older, your ability to remain mentally strong begins to decline; your cognition is responsible for this. However brain exercises can help improve your cognitive ability.

Within your brain, there are five main functions which comprise your cognitive abilities: memory, visual-spatial skills, language, attention and executive function. Stimulating these functions on a regular basis helps improve your cognitive abilities.

Memory plays the largest role in every cognitive function and activity your brain participates in, including reasoning and mental calculations. A variety of memory types are at work in your brain each day; however, you may not recognize them until one of them begins to fail you.

To exercise this function of cognition, try memorizing the words to a song you don't know; this helps boost the chemical acetycholine, which is responsible for improving memory skills.

You can also try using your non-dominant hand for activities such as brushing your teeth, or attempt to get dressed in the dark; this forces the opposite side of your brain to begin working and thinking during these activities.

A good attention span is required in nearly every aspect of life; it assists you in concentration during times when you are surrounded by noise and distraction, while helping you multitask.

One way to exercise this function is by changing the route you take to a particular place each day, such as school or work. This forces your brain to wake up from its old habits and pay attention.

You can also combine activities, which helps your brain learn to multitask. When you walk or jog, listen to an audio book or music CD. While driving, force yourself to devise some mental math problems to solve. Both of these force your brain to work on more than one thing at a time.

This function enables you to interact within your environment more efficiently and become more aware of your surroundings.

Begin by staring straight ahead, taking in as many objects as possible both directly in front of you and within your peripheral vision. An hour later, write down every object you can remember seeing. This a terrific workout for your brain.

Another effective exercise is to walk into a room and find five different objects, taking in their locations. Two hours later, force yourself to remember what the objects were and where they were located. Natural Healing Home Remedy for Low Energy

Low energy in individuals can have a number of causes, and is often accompanied by poor moods. Causes include anxiety; overexertion; lack of exercise; poor sleep habits; low blood sugar; pregnancy and breastfeeding; seasonal depression; and seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, a more severe version of seasonal depression. There are two main strategies for naturally healing low energy at home: seeking out foods and liquids that increase energy, and avoiding those substances that lower it. Lifestyle changes also can be beneficial.

What Helps

While supplements containing vitamin B, ginseng and other vitamins and minerals can help raise energy levels, they can be expensive. One of the best natural home remedies or strategies for low energy is proper dietary management. A diet consisting of the right foods can greatly increase energy and reduce feelings of fatigue, sluggishness and bloating. These include legumes (kidney beans, soy and lentils), vegetables (lettuce, spinach, broccoli, peppers, radishes, raw carrots, celery and tomatoes), fruits (apples, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, grapes and avocados), oily fish (herring, sardines, mackerel and salmon), nuts (particularly walnuts), seeds, whole grains, and walnut and olive oils. Food should be consumed in small amounts, with little time between meals. Grazing, as opposed to gorging, helps speed up metabolism. Drinking large amounts of fluids, particularly herbal teas and mineral water, also helps increase energy.

What Hurts

While seeking out and consuming the proper foods and liquids is important for increasing energy, avoiding substances that lower energy is equally as important. Individuals with low energy should avoid sugary, fatty foods (pastries, cookies and doughnuts); salty, fatty foods (potato chips and the like); and foods high in carbohydrates (breads, biscuits and cakes). They should also avoid alcohol (with the exception of one glass of red wine per day) as well as caffeinated beverages. Small amounts of caffeine can increase energy, but large amounts can drain it, causing headache, fatigue, restlessness and insomnia. Individuals with low energy--if they must drink caffeine--should drink a maximum of two to three cups of coffee (or an equivalent caffeinated beverage) per day.

To obtain an optimal level of energy, individuals need to balance their proper diet with a proper lifestyle. Some activities that can help increase energy include taking regular work breaks to stretch and walk around, taking short "power" naps during the day, enjoying as much natural daylight and fresh air as possible, and getting a proper amount of sleep in a well-circulated room.

Colon Cleanser Side Effects

Colon cleansers have increased in popularity over the past 10 years. Many people use them regularly as a way to cleanse their colons of toxins and waste products. Colon cleansers have received mixed reviews about the use of these products. Many practitioners of alternative medicine recommend occasional use of colon cleansers as a way to detoxify the body. Other medical professionals strongly oppose using cleansing products. In general, colon cleansers have a number of positive and negative side effects.

Cleanse Palate

Occasional colon cleansing helps clean the palate because people doing one cannot eat a lot of processed or sugary foods during the process.

Regulate Bowels

Colon cleansers in combination with eating a healthy diet help regulate the digestive system since they often relieve constipation and bloating.

Weight Loss

A positive side effect to colon cleansers is that they lead to rapid weight loss in many people, depending on whether they use the two-day or week-long cleanse.

Overall Energy

Many people report having more energy and clearer breathing after a colon cleanse, especially if they continue eating a healthy diet once the cleanse is finished.

A negative side effect of colon cleanser is that people feel fatigue, dizziness and weakness because many cleansers are the equivalent of a temporary fast.

For many people, the ingredients in colon cleansers lead to unpleasant side effects like nausea and vomiting. If this occurs, they should stop the cleansing process.

Stomach Irritation

Another negative side effect of a colon cleanser is that people who use them suffer from irritated stomachs and diarrhea.

Grapefruit Seed Extract for Infections

Doctors and herbal medicine practitioners discovered the benefits of grapefruit seed extract in the 1960s. The exact infection-fighting makeup of grapefruit seed extract includes flavanoids, ascorbic acid, citric acid, tocopherols and limonoids. To treat infections, mix a drop or two of the extract into a cup of juice to realize its healing properties.

In 1963, Dr. Jacob Harich, a nuclear physicist, traveled to Florida to research the uses and and marketing of grapefruit seed extract.

The ingredients found in grapefruit extract, which are taken from the pulp and seed of the grapefruit, help fight infection because of the fruit's bioflavonoids. These bioflavonoids are turned into an infection-fighting compound. The effects of flu, staph, colds and other infections are lessened with the use of grapefruit seed extract.

According to the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, grapefruit seed extract fights more than 800 different kinds of bacterial and viral infections.

Grapefruit seed extract is becoming popular because of its nontoxic ability to fight infections. The extract is claimed to heal bladder infections, yeast infections, plaque, respiratory infections, strep throat and laryngitis.

Grapefruit seed extract should only be taken at the first signs of illness and used only until the sickness is over. Excessive use of the extract can kill the body's natural, healthy bacteria.

Nasal Irrigation Tips

Nasal Irrigation Tips

Nasal irrigation is a technique used to flush the inside of the nose and sinus passages. Nasal irrigation is achieved through the use of a nasal irrigation instrument that can be as simple as a cupped hand used to snort water into the nose, to an electronic pump that forces water into the nose in a controlled pulsatile fashion. Nasal irrigation can be beneficial in people suffering from nasal congestion, but should never be used in a state of acute bacterial illness. Always consult a physician before attempting nasal irrigation at home.

Nasal Irrigation Instruments

Nasal irrigation instruments facilitate flushing a solution into the nose, and act as the delivery system for prepared irrigation fluid. Some common irrigation instruments include teapot-like stiff-walled water pots, squeezable bottles, or electronic pumps. Squeezable bottles are the cheapest and simplest to use at home. Electronic pumps allow the option of pulsation to increase efficacy of mucus clearing.

Nasal Irrigation Solution

Irrigation solution should be isotonic, or have the same concentration of dissolved electrolytes as the body. When the irrigation solution is at body temperature and isotonic, it will not cause pain during irrigation. Irrigation solution can be made by mixing a cup of warm water with 1/4 teaspoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda.

Nasal Irrigation Techniques

Depending on the irrigator being utilized, nasal irrigation techniques vary. The simplest technique is tilting the head to one side and pouring the irrigation solution into the upper nostril while breathing through the mouth. This should be slow and deliberate, allowing the solution to flow out of the other nostril.

Nasal Irrigation Indications

It is best to consult a physician before attempting to perform nasal irrigation at home. Nasal irrigation can be beneficial and soothing for people who suffer from allergic rhinosinusitis, the common cold, or dust impaction within the nose. Irrigation simply helps the body clear thick mucus from the cilia or tiny hairs that are inside the nose. Irrigation also offers symptomatic relief.

Laetrile Effectiveness

Laetrile is a special compound derived from plants, raw nuts and the pits of fruits like apricots, bitter almonds, peaches and plums. Laetrile contains amygdalin, which is a compound consisting of cyanide and sugar. Laetrile has been used by some cancer victims in an effort to fend off the disease because the cyanide in laetrile is believed to offer cancer destroying benefits. Laetrile also contains prunasin and benzaldehyde, both of which are believed to be blockers of cancer cells.

The Use of Laetrile

The use of Laetrile is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. When Laetrile was tested on cancer patients, the supplement was provided through orally consumed pills or injection. Usually, the supplement is offered intravenously for a period of time, and the patient then follows up with oral doses for maintenance therapy. While this supplement has been made available on the Internet, the U.S. government is taking steps to cease all Internet sales of the substance.

Overall Effectiveness

Laetrile has illustrated a few anticancer benefits when it has been tested on animals and humans. A case series involving 44 cancer patients that used Laetrile in the early 1950s, indicated that those patients that experienced improvements in their condition received anticancer drugs, radiation therapy and Laetrile supplements. Thus, the supplement use was combined with other treatment forms, and the case series does not reveal the true effectiveness of Laetrile, if any.
A second case series conducted in the early 1960s involved 10 patients with cancer that had spread to various parts of the body. They were given Laetrile via intravenous injection. The primary benefit reported by the patients was pain relief, a reduction of lymph node swelling and a decrease in the size of tumors. Long-term studies were not conducted on the 10 patients.
When Laetrile breaks down inside your body, benzaldehyde is created. Some patients diagnosed with advanced cancer have responded well to the use of benzaldehyde, even after not having positive results with standard cancer treatments. Some patients actually saw all the symptoms and signs of cancer disappear while others were noted to have a decrease in the size of cancerous tumors.

Negative Laetrile Studies

Director Vincent DeVita Jr., the director of the National Cancer Institute, performed human testing on Laetrile on 156 patients at the Minnesota Mayo Clinic, the New York City Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center and the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center. All patients tested had some form of advanced cancer no longer treatable via standard cancer treatment methods. Patients received Laetrile via intravenous injection for three weeks, and three times a day by oral consumption.
The results of the study showed that Laetrile had little to no positive effect. Disease progression was identified in 50 percent of the patients within 30 days time, and 90 percent of the patients within a period of 90 days. One-fifth of all patients tested survived eight months.

Potential Side Effects

The side effects of Laetrile are significant. The side effects you will experience when using Laetrile are those that are commonly associated with cyanide poisoning. Side effects can include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, skin discoloration attributed to oxygen deprivation, damage to the liver, hypotension, droopy eyelids, coordination difficulty, nerve damage, fever, confusion, coma and death. Due to the serious side effects associated with this supplement's use, and the lack of long-term studies conducted on the use of Laetrile, this supplement cannot be recommended until further studies are conducted.
