Alternative Medicine for the Treatment of Dry Eye

Healthy eyes are continuously producing tears. This fluid bathes the eyes even between blinks. The Mayo Clinic article "Dry Eyes" reports that the tear film "prevents dry eyes and allows your eyes to maintain clear, comfortable vision." Dry eyes result when the tear glands produce less fluid. This leaves dry patches on the eyes and causes discomfort and blurred vision. Alternative medicine offers a few ways to treat dry eyes.

Blink More

Blinking repeatedly helps to distribute the tear film more evenly over the eyes, reports the Mayo Clinic. Conscious blinking is one way to keep your eyes moist. Be certain to blink when concentrating on visual activities. It is also important to close the eyes for several seconds every hour or so to rest the eyes.

Avoiding Eye Irritants

If you suffer from chronic dry eyes it is important to avoid substances or situations that can further dry out or irritate the eye. The Mayo Clinic suggest avoiding cigarette, cigar and pipe smoke, whether yours or someone else's. The tear film is made of liquid which can evaporate so avoid getting the hot air of hair dryers in your eyes. Car heaters also dry out the air. Even air conditioners and fans blow air that can dry out the tear film. Also wear goggles when swimming. Many of the chemicals used in pools, such as chlorine, can irritate the eyes. Wear glasses on windy days to reduce the chances of drying out the eyes, or small particles entering the eyes.

Use a Warm Compress

The "Doctors Book of Home Remedies ll" by Sid Kirchheimer also suggests warm compress as a way to keep eyes moist. Rinse a wash cloth with warm water and place on closed eyes for five to 10 minutes to "open the clogged oil glands in the eyelids." Compresses work because the tears are made oil, water and mucus. The compress releases the oil and this helps to keep the eyes from drying out.

Add Moisture to the Air

Humidifiers add moisture to dry air and this helps to keep eye lubrication. These machines are especially useful in the winter when the air is usually dry. Another option is to boil a large pot of water on the stove so the moist, hot air circulates around the home. The chapter "Dry Eyes" in the book "Doctors Book of Home Remedies ll" suggests a humidifier in the bedroom or any room you spend a lot of time in. The humid air keeps the mucus membranes from drying out while you sleep.

How to Use Mustard Oil

How to Use Mustard Oil

The versatility of mustard oil lends itself to both household and therapeutic uses. Extracted from mustard seeds, there are two types of mustard oil. Mustard essential oil is extracted from grinding up the seeds and distilling them in water. This produces a toxic chemical, allyl isothiocyanate that can irritate the lungs and skin. It is used commercially for pet and insect repellent products. Regular mustard oil is derived by simply pressing the seeds, and can be used in a variety of ways such as for aching joints and hair growth treatments.

Use mustard oil to ease joint pain. Mustard oil contains trace amounts of selenium which is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Warm two tablespoons of mustard oil in a pan. Add three to four garlic cloves and heat until they darken in color. When the oil is cool, rub on sore joints to reduce inflammation.

Use mustard oil for ear pain. Combine 1/4 teaspoon thyme seeds, with two peeled and chopped garlic cloves. Mix in one tablespoon of mustard oil and heat on low in a pan, until the seeds and the garlic turn brown. Pour oil through a wire mesh strainer and allow it to cool to lukewarm. Using an eardropper, drop the oil into the infected ear to relieve the pain.

Use for respiratory infections. Rub warm mustard oil all over your neck, chest and nose. Mustard contains magnesium which helps to clear up the congestion in your chest and nose.

Vitalize your hair with mustard oil. Boil one cup of mustard oil with four tablespoons of henna leaves. Strain and bottle the resulting oil. Massage thoroughly through the scalp regularly. For dandruff, combine one tablespoon each of castor, coconut and mustard oil and massage thoroughly. Leave it overnight or for up to four hours and rinse thoroughly.

Nonpharmacuetical Remedies for Motion Sickness

Motion sickness is a sensation of queasiness that results from riding in all forms of transportation, rides, and even watching simulated movement. It is caused by a disturbance to the inner ear, which controls equilibrium and balance. Uneven motion disrupts blood flow to the ear, which sends jumbled signals to the brain. Motion sickness is not psychosomatic but there is a strong mental component to it. Past experiences train the brain to expect this queasy feeling. There are many natural ways to treat and prevent motion sickness, which can then prevent future episodes.

Herbal Treatments

Herbs and pharmaceutical drugs are assigned suggested doses based on one of their most important pharmacological properties, therapeutic range. Therapeutic range is the smallest dose that provides any beneficial effect to the largest dose safe for use. Herbs are generally non-toxic and severe side effects or overdose is highly unlikely. However, be sure to follow suggested doses because higher doses are not likely to provide additional benefit and can potentially cause negative side effects. The doses below are for adults. Children under 6 should be given one quarter of the amount and children between the ages of six and 12 should be given half.
Black horehound relieves nausea. Take as directed on the label. Fennel tea relieves lingering nausea. Drink as often as desired. Ginger is very effective for relieving symptoms of motion sickness. Drink in tea form as often as desired or use an extract as directed on the label. Use of peppermint in a similar fashion as ginger to relieve nausea, upset stomach and gas.

Other Suggestions

If symptoms of motion sickness are not too severe, place some sort of weight in your lap. This keeps blood from draining from your head and provides the inner ear with needed circulation. Drink plenty of fluids before and during the trip. Avoid eating greasy or salty foods and alcohol. Bulky, slowly digested carbohydrates are best. Keep your eyes straight ahead and avoid reading while in motion.

The Ways to Cure Swollen Guitar-Playing Fingers

The Ways to Cure Swollen Guitar-Playing Fingers

Even the best guitar players occasionally deal with swollen fingers. The problem arises because your fingers repeat the same movements. If you play in a band, you may not have the chance to rest your hands between sets. You might not realize your fingers are swollen until hours after playing or even the next day. The best ways for reducing your swollen hands involves all-natural products, available from your local health food store. These products help the swelling go down within a few hours.

Epsom Salt

Epsom salt contains magnesium, which reduces swelling but also relieves pain associated with the swelling. Boil three cups of water and add three teaspoons of Epsom salt. Remove the water from the heat and pour in a small bowl. Let the mixture sit for at least 5 to 10 minutes. Rest your hands in the salt and water mixture for up to 30 minutes or until the water becomes cool. Fill a washcloth with ice and alternate between soaking your fingers and rubbing the ice on your fingers. You can also use ordinary table salt if you do not have Epsom salt.

Work your hands and fingers as often as possible, to build up endurance and reduce swelling. Clench and unclench your fists five times, repeating each interval at least twice and try cracking your knuckles. Sanjiv Naidu, a professor of orthopaedics at Penn State University says that cracking your knuckles won't cause damage to your hands. Keep your hands flat and gently curl and uncurl each finger, one at a time. Take a five-minute break when not playing to keep working your hands and fingers.

Tea Tree Oil

Bring two cups of water to a boil and add a few drops of tea tree oil. Tea tress oil has antibacterial properties that help the body fight infections. Let the water cool for five minutes or until the water is cool enough that you can stand soaking in it. Soak your swollen fingers in the oil and water mixture for 10 to 15 minutes or until you notice that the water is no longer hot. Alternatively, rub the tea tree oil directly on your swollen fingers and let sit for 15 minutes before rinsing off.

Turn the stove on low heat and pour three tablespoons of sesame oil into a pan. Heat the oil until it starts bubbling and add at least five crushed garlic cloves. Stir the mixture continuously until the garlic turns light brown. Then add one-half teaspoon crushed Carmon seeds, one-half teaspoon ginger powder and one-half teaspoon turmeric powder. Remove the mixture from the heat and let cool until you can apply it without burning yourself. Rub the mixture on your fingers. Keep the mixture stored in an airtight container and heat for 10 to 15 seconds in the microwave before using again.

Foods for Healthy Adrenal Glands

Foods for Healthy Adrenal Glands

Your adrenal glands are vital to regulating your stress levels and helping you to overcome infection. They work in a complex manner with the hypothalamus and pituitary glands. There are many things you can do to support your adrenal glands, including eating certain healthy foods and avoiding foods with a high glycemic index.

The adrenal glands are two glands located next to the kidneys. They have two parts: the cortex and medulla. The cortex produces cortisol, an important hormone that regulates the inflammation response among other functions. The medulla produces epinephrine and norepinephrine, the "fight or flight" hormones.

According to naturopathic and Chinese medicine (Reference 1), the adrenal glands can be overtaxed, especially from a modern lifestyle. We may drink coffee at our desk and then feel stress about losing our job. The coffee, mixed with the stressful thoughts, causes your adrenal glands to release hormones that will trigger the "fight or flight" response. The adrenal glands may also release cortisol and corticosterone, which can affect the immune system.

According to Dr. Todd Nippoldt in an article on the Mayo Clinic website, the idea of adrenal fatigue has not yet been proven by conventional allopathic medicine. He notes that there is not yet enough evidence to prove that the symptoms assigned to the diagnosis are actually caused by adrenal fatigue, and it is possible that another diagnosis, such as depression or fibromyalgia, may go undetected.

A whole-foods diet is the recommended cure for adrenal fatigue. Cut back on caffeine, sugar and refined flour. Eat an early breakfast high in protein, such as eggs or peanut butter on grain toast. Try to eat every five hours. Eat 30 percent to 40 percent whole grains, 30 to 40 percent vegetables, 10 to 20 percent animal foods, 10 to 15 percent beans, seeds and nuts, and 5 to 10 percent fruits, according to John G. Conner, a master acupuncturist.

Potassium is an important mineral for healthy adrenal glands. One of the adrenal glands' functions is to regulate sodium in the urine. The balance of potassium and sodium in your body is important. The typical American diet is high in sodium, so eating foods high in potassium can help. Foods high in potassium include red meat, cold-water fish, milk, yogurt and vegetables such as broccoli, winter squash, potatoes and peas.

How to Get Rid of Dark Skin With Home Remedies

Dark skin may be a major cause of concern for those who have a deep craving for fair complexion. Hyperpigmentation may be a cause for dark skin. Presence of melanin, a skin pigment in large quantities results in darkening of skin. Hyperpigmentation may also cause bark patches and blotchy skin. However, there are several effective home remedies that will lighten skin color if regularly followed.

Make a paste of one tsp of milk powder, one tsp of honey, one tsp of lemon juice, and tsp of almond oil. Apply this mixture on face. Wash it off after 10-15 minutes. This pack provides healthy glow on skin. It also helps in removing tan.

Placing sliced raw potato on the face reduces blemishes and on the skin.

Applying turmeric powder mixed with lime juice removes the tan.

Soak four almonds overnight. Use milk and grind almonds in to fine paste. Apply this mixture on face and neck. Leave it overnight. Wash off with cold water in the morning. Continuing the treatment for 15 days at stretch.

Home Remedy for Congestion

Home Remedy for Congestion

Decongestion entails the relief of nasal congestion, which is when the nasal passages are obstructed because of the swelling of membranes that line the nose. These membranes swell up due to inflammation of the blood vessels. This condition is also known as stuffy nose and nasal blockage. There are several common causes of congestion, such as sinus infection, hay fever and allergic reaction. Try several decongestant home remedies to relieve your symptoms (which include difficulty breathing, stuffy nose and mild headache).

Hot Liquids

Drinking hot liquids is a quick, easy and relaxing way to help get rid of nasal congestion. Not only can consuming hot liquids (like chicken broth, apple cider, tea and vegetable stock) assist with a stuffy nose, they can also soothe the feelings of general malaise and discomfort associated with congestion. The steam and heat will get the nose running, which can clear out the stuffiness.

Steam is another simple and convenient way to reduce nasal congestion. Expose yourself to steam by standing in a steam room or by simply taking a hot shower. The steam will allow the nose to run. You can create your own "steam room" by filling up a bowl with hot water and adding in some mint oil, eucalyptus or orange. If you cover your entire face with a small towel and lean over the bowl, and then inhale deeply, it will help clear up your congestion.

Sniffing irritants like menthol and onions can also help relieve nasal congestion. Most people have onions at their house. Simply cut an onion in half and then just hold it directly under your nose for a while, which should bring upon almost instant congestion relief. Also dab a menthol rub directly below your nostrils, which functions similar to a nasal decongestant spray.

Red Marine Algae for Viral Infections

Red Marine Algae for Viral Infections

The Chinese culture has known the nutritional and medicinal benefits of red algae for thousands of years. Red algae is commonly used as a natural immune system booster and is available at most health-food stores. Modern medicine is just now discovering how red algae can be used to treat and prevent many types of illnesses, including several types of viral infections.

Since 600 B.C., the Chinese have incorporated marine red algae into their diet for its nutritional and medicinal benefits. The Chinese believe that red algae improves the flow of qi energy in the body resulting in a sense of well being and improved energy levels. Qi (pronounced "chi") is defined as breath or air.

Modern Knowledge

Modern scientists and researchers have known the medicinal benefits of red algae and recently discovered its anti-viral potential. Currently, scientists are aware that with regular intake red algae can boost the immune system against viral infections and treat a multitude of other illnesses such as boils, urinary tract infections, asthma, goiters, and stomach problems.

Scientific Findings

Recent scientific studies on the effects of red algae as an anti-viral are revealing. Clinical studies conducted by the University of British Columbia reports the anti-viral activity of red algae against the herpes simplex virus as positive, meaning it is effective in the treatment of the virus. The American Society for Microbiology states that two species of red algae have inhibited the replication of the herpes simplex virus.

Additionl Antiviral Potential

There are many other viruses harmful to humans that red algae has been successful in fighting in addition to herpes simplex I (cold sores) and II (genital herpes). Red algae is effective against sexually transmitted diseases such as Human Immune Deficiency (HIV) and the Human Papillovirus (HPV) that causes genital warts. Additionally, scientists are discovering how effective red algae is against the viral infection Candida, which is associated with chronic yeast infections in women.

How Red Algae Works

Red algae has been reported to rival the effectiveness of modern synthetic anti-virals such as Acyclovir. The benefits from red algae come from its natural active agent of carrageenans, which are members of the family of sulfated polysaccharides. Polysaccharides stimulate the production of interferons that work as a natural anti-viral agent and improves the activity of T-Cells and B-Cells that destroy virus-infected cells within the body.

Red algae can be purchased without a doctor's prescription and can be used as a natural viral preventative and immune system booster. However, homeopathic remedies to treat existing viruses should only be used once you have consulted a doctor and have full knowledge of what type of virus you intend to treat with red algae therapy.

Natural Treatments for Uterine Fibroids & Ovarian Cysts

Fibroids are benign uterine growths. Many women have no symptoms while others experience bleeding, increased urination, bladder displacement, urine retention, constipation, infertility, miscarriage, pain during intercourse and anemia. Ovarian cysts are enlarged follicles that fail to rupture and release an egg. Women may experience general pain, disrupted periods, pain in the back and abdomen and painful intercourse. Both of these conditions are caused by imbalances in estrogen production. There are many natural treatments to deal with both of these conditions. Talk to your doctor about any natural supplements you are using.

Herbal Treatments for Fibroids

Herbal treatments that address bleeding often work quite quickly, but supplements that control hormone levels take about three months of use before bringing about noticeable results.

Black cohosh controls bleeding and relieves pain; take 500 milligrams daily. Cinnamon oil has a long history of use in traditional American medicine to control bleeding fibroids. Use 10-to-15 drops every 15 minutes until the bleeding stops. Dan shen, which should only be used under professional supervision, treats congealed blood, dark red clots during menstruation, and relieves pelvic congestion. Reishi tincture alleviates pelvic inflammation. Take one tablespoon in cup of water three times daily.

There are three traditional Chinese formulas that are commonly used to treat uterine fibroids. Take as directed on the product label.

Augmented Rambling powder lowers estrogen levels and is most useful for women who are also suffering from painful or difficult urination. Cinnamon Twig and Poria Pill lowers estrogen levels without interfering with the menstrual cycle or causing weight gain. Four Substance Decoction treats fibroids and is especially useful for women who eat a poor diet.

Herbal Treatments for Ovarian Cysts

Dioscorea tincture, also known as wild yam, alleviates cramping caused by ovarian cysts. Take as directed on the label. Dong quai relieves pain resulting from this condition. Take 1,000 milligrams daily during the two-week period after menstruation and then discontinue for two weeks.

There are several Chinese formulas used to treat ovarian cysts. Use as directed on the product label.

Dong Quai and Peony Powder reduces estrogen levels and the formation of inflammatory substances in the tissues that line the uterus. Two Cured Decoction reduces estrogen levels. Augmented Rambling Powder and Cinnamon Twig and Poria pill, which are listed above, can also be used for ovarian cysts.

Other Suggestions

Estrogen is produced from body fat. Excess weight increases the amount of estrogen in the body, so make an effort to maintain a normal weight. Do your best to exercise regularly and reduce stress levels. Avoid the following herbs that stimulate estrogen production: Coleus, Cordyceps, fennel seed, licorice, and moutan.

How to Make Colloidal Silver Without Salt

How to Make Colloidal Silver Without Salt

Colloidal silver forms when an electric current passes down two 99.9 percent silver wires into distilled water. A constant current generator forces silver particles off the wires into the water. Makers of homemade colloidal silver sometimes add salt to speed up the process. It usually takes more than an hour to make. Distillation removes impurities, minerals and salts from the water. Making colloidal silver using non-distilled water with added salt leads to the formation of silver chloride. Regular or excessive consumption of this solution leads to a permanent condition called argyria when the skin develops a blue tinge.

Preparing the Solution

Clean the kitchen top surface to free the area from possible contamination by dust and cleaning chemicals.

Place the generator close to an electrical socket for easy access.

Fill a clean Mason jar to just under the neck with distilled water.

Insert each silver wire into the jack on the underside of the generator. Push each in as far as it will go.

Connect the generator's electric flex to the machine.

Sit the generator with its two vertical silver wires, over the open mouth of jar. If the generator can't sit on the top of the open jar, place a ruler across the top and place the generator on that. Do not allow the wires to touch the side of the jar.

Plug the electric flex into the socket and switch it on.

Brew the colloidal silver for a maximum of 100 minutes if using a basic generator with no 'process complete' indicator light.

After Brewing

Switch off the electricity and remove the plug from the socket.

Take the generator off the top of the jar and gently pull out the flex.

Place the lid on the jar and secure it tightly. Store the colloidal solution in a cool dark place until ready for use.

If you have tried antibiotics without success, or would prefer to treat ear infections naturally, there are options available to you and your kids. One of the ways you can treat ear infections naturally is by using onion juice. Onion juice has anti-bacterial properties, so you can clear up ear infections naturally by using a common onion.

Check your kid's ear to see if their ear infection involves a perforation. If the membrane in the ear is perforated, you will not want to use this method. If you know what to look for and have the right equipment, you can look for the perforation yourself. Otherwise, you may want to have a pediatrician check your child's ear.

Cut an onion in half. You can use any variety of onion. It can be a red, white, or yellow onion.

Use a spoon and scrape the freshly exposed onion flesh until you have accumulated several drops of onion juice in your spoon.

Use a clean and sterile dropper and suck a few drops of onion juice into the dropper.

To treat ear infections naturally, you then drop a few drops of onion juice into your child's ear.

What Are the Benefits of Apricot Oil?

What Are the Benefits of Apricot Oil?

Apricot was cultivated in China over three thousand years ago and was introduced to Europe by the Romans around 70-60 B.C. Apricot kernel oil is obtained by crushing the apricot seeds in the cold-pressed method. The apricot has been sought after since ancient times for its healing and medicinal properties. In ancient medicine, its uses ranged from aiding in childbirth to treating coughs.

Apricot kernel oil is used in skincare products because of its light texture and easy absorption into the skin without leaving a greasy residue. The oil is rich in vitamins A and E, which aids in keeping skin looking smooth and elastic. Apricot kernel oil is also used as a carrier oil because its light fragrance mixes well with scented oils and other skincare products.

It has also been used for minor skin conditions such as eczema, itching, scabies and even psoriasis. Many lip care products use apricot oil, and the crushed seeds are found in facial masks because of their restorative properties.

Heated apricot kernel has long been used as a hair treatment to restore shine and lost nutrients to dry or damaged hair. Essential fatty acids help restore softness to hair. Simply mix few drops into shampoo, or rub a few drops between your palms then through your hair.

Healing Sickness

The oil derived from apricot kernels has been used to treat different sicknesses. A few drops administered into the ear help with an earache and was used in England to treat stomach ulcers. The oil from the kernels has been used to treat respiratory problems such as bronchitis and rhinitis. Apricot kernel oil has also been used to treat intestinal disorders such as constipation.

There have been reports of hypersensitivity from ingesting the oil, such as skin rashes or other allergic conditions. Stop use immediately and consult a doctor if you develop any of these symptoms. It is not recommended for pregnant women to ingest apricot oil because there is not enough research to know if it is safe.

Preventing Disease

It is believed that apricot oil is anti-asthmatic and helps with treating this disease. A drug known as Laetrile that is marketed in Mexico and used other places besides the United States is derived from apricot seeds. This drug has not been used in the United States because it has not been approved by the FDA because the seeds contain amygdalin, which produces cyanide.

The kernels and oil were used to treat tumors in ancient times.

Relieving Knee Pain With Alternative Medicine

Knee pain can be persistent and debilitating, and often people move away from traditional medicine, looking instead for natural, alternative cures. The following will give you some examples of where to start; however it is best to at least consult your doctor or physical therapist about any alternative therapies you are considering.

Acupuncture may help relive your knee pain, causing only minor discomfort at worst. This ancient technique has been shown to be effective at relieving pain, so it is a good option even if you do fancy the thought of needles. Acupuncture needles are thinner than medical needles, so the "pinch" of puncture is far less. When you look for an acupuncture office, look for a clean facility, a knowledgeable acupuncturist, and favorable reviews or personal recommendations. Be sure that the needles used are pre-sterilized in packs and properly disposed of after use.

Massage can be a great way to relieve pain and pressure on your knee joints, particularly if the pain is caused wholly or in part by tight muscles. A professional massage targeted at the painful locations can have the best effect, but you can get some relief on your own at home with self-massage. With one hand above your knee on your leg and one below, massage gently upward with your top hand. Use your palm to press the muscles into the bone, then lift them up with a gentle pinching motion. If this technique isn't adequate, use your fingertips to knead deeply in a circle around the knee.

Emu Oil

Emu oil is not an option for vegans because it is derived from emu fat; however, it is purported to have great restorative properties, and can relieve even extreme arthritis pain with regular use. Use emu oil poured into your hand to relieve knee pain by rubbing it gently into the affected area daily. You can also use the oil to conduct your knee massage, possibly increasing the effectiveness of both techniques. Emu oil boosts blood flow to promote healing, and also helps reduce inflammation to give you some relief from even chronic knee pain. To find out where to purchase emu oil, consult the "Resources" section.

What Is Electrotherapy?

Electrotherapy has provided people with a drug-free, non-invasive and non-addictive treatment option. With that, it poses minimal risk for side effects and complications due to adverse drug effects. While it offers several inherent advantages over orthodox medical treatments for pain and for more of man's common health complaints, a number of electrotherapy modalities were developed to offer the safest lifelong solution to managing the symptoms of chronic health conditions.

Nature of Treatment

Electrotherapy is a treatment based on electrical stimulation. It uses a specific range of energy waves of an electromagnetic spectrum to produce the desired physiological as well as chemical body responses. Unlike drugs and any other forms of treatment, it helps improve and manage a number of symptoms without compromising health due to side effects.

There are two common modalities of electrotherapy that are used to treat a variety of diseases: Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) and the iontophoresis. TENS are mainly used to relieve pain by stimulating proprioception nerve fibers to block or slow down the transmission of pain signals. Iontophoresis is the transdermal electrotherapy modality that uses a drug-carrying electrode to deliver direct current to the affected area. The ionic charge of the drug used in this treatment will stimulate healing by aiding the conduction of electricity through the problem areas.

Electrotherapy is known to treat pain due to post-operative incisions, fractures, arthritic inflammation or tendinitis, muscle loss or weakness and depression. The main therapeutic purposes of electrotherapy include pain relief, physiochemical stimulation and muscle contraction stimulation.

How it Works

To manage acute and chronic pain, the electrotherapy uses electric signals to interfere with the transmission of neural pain signals into the brain. It effectively slows down neural signal transmission to lessen the pain and make it more bearable for the patient. In some cases, the treatment may use analgesics and inflammatory medications on the managed area. To stimulate physiochemical changes, electrotherapy uses electric signals to introduce heat into the deep tissues. This deep heating procedure increases blood flow to and from the affected region to improve drainage. To stimulate muscle contraction during rehabilitation, it draws a specific amount of current into the problematic area to relieve muscle spasms, re-educate the muscles after trauma and prevent muscle atrophy.

For pain-relief electrotherapy, the contraindications are undiagnosed pain, current use of narcotic medications, hyposensitivity at certain body areas and pregnancy, except when managing labor and delivery pain. For physiochemical treatments, the contraindications are acute inflammation, hemorrhage, metal implants, pulmonary tuberculosis, lupus erythematosus and photosensitivity. For muscle contraction stimulation therapy, contraindications include new fracture, hemorrhage and phlebitis.

Electrotherapy Devices

The health benefits of electrotherapy extend to its treatment devices. These devices include the Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), muscle stimulator (NMES), High Volt Pulsed Galvanic Stimulation (HVPGS) and Microcurrent Electrical Nerve Stimulation (MENS) units. To effectively stimulate intracellular functions, these electrotherapy devices deliver healing current to induce the healing process of chronic wounds and manage the pain-related symptoms of pressure ulcers or venous stasis ulcers, injuries and other musculoskeletal problems.

Possible Complications

At the end of the scheduled therapy, patients are usually checked for burns from electrodes. Burns are caused by poor placement of wires, which increases electrical resistance. For iontophoresis, one possible complication is chemical burn due to the accumulation of too many negative electrodes. In general, these complications are caused by lack of understanding of the nature of electrotherapy. This explains why electrotherapy is best done by medical professionals.

Chelation Therapy for Cholesterol

Chelation Therapy relies on the use of slow injections or infusions of a chemical identified as ethylenediaminetetraacetic (EDTA). Chelation therapy is sometimes used to free the body of toxic metals, lead and iron, which are later passed by the body via urination processes. It is believed that LDL cholesterol needs interaction with the latter mentioned metals for oxidation purposes. Thus, with the prompt removal of toxic metals, the oxidation processes are diminished and blood vessel functioning is improved.

The Chelation Therapy Process

Chelation Therapy was established in the 1930s in Germany for use within the dye industry. EDTA is a chemical that naturally binds to iron, copper, lead, aluminum, zinc, mercury and calcium. Later, doctors and researchers saw the benefit of the use of EDTA in people to minimize toxic metal exposure internally. Once EDTA is injected into an individual, it binds to the metals or minerals, and the kidneys remove the metal and the EDTA from the body. This process is a fully approved process for the treatment and care of lead poisoning.

Chelation Therapy and Cholesterol Levels

Chelation Therapy has been found to have positive effect on cholesterol levels. While HDL levels (high-density lipoproteins) are considered good cholesterol and desirable, LDL cholesterol (low-density lipoproteins) are considered an undesirable form of cholesterol. EDTA infusions, when combined with mineral and vitamin supplements, help to increase HDL levels while simultaneously decreasing LDL cholesterol levels. What's more, low levels of HDL are raised by EDTA infusions, and high levels of HDL remain consistently high after HDL infusions.

Chelation Therapy is also used to help reverse the damage associated with atherosclerosis. Side effects of the condition include an obstruction of the arteries due to plaque formations. Plaque formations (cholesterol buildup) that occur in your coronary arteries can later lead to heart attacks, and you might also experience angina attacks. Plaque formations in the vessels that lead to the brain can eventually lead to a stroke. Meanwhile, plaque formation in the arteries that supply blood to the lower limbs can lead to leg pain. EDTA infusions help to remove calcium from your blood stream. Calcium is part of the plaque that forms in arteries and this aids in plaque breakdown.

What's more, EDTA infusions help to diminish the stickiness of your blood as well as potential clotting; blood platelet creation is diminished after EDTA infusions, which diminish blood stickiness. When blood is less sticky, it can move through smaller blood vessels and arteries with greater ease. This type of therapy is considered less invasive than other methods for remedying atherosclerotic plaque formations like surgery and rerouting procedures.

Using Chelation Therapy for lowering cholesterol and for reversing atherosclerosis has positive benefits, but it can prove costly. This type of therapy is not covered by many insurance carriers, and a single treatment can cost as much as $8. Since 20 to 100 treatments are required to achieve any benefits from the therapy, the costs of chelation therapy can accumulate quickly. What's more, there is a time factor when it comes to chelation therapy. Each therapy session where you receive infusions can last three to four hours.

How to Naturally Treat Leg Ulcers

Leg ulcers are open sores that affect the lower area of the leg. Leg ulcers usually begin with itching and pain, and then begin to swell. They then form as ulcers. Below are some natural remedies that can be used to treat leg ulcers.

Take an extra 500 IU of Vitamin E daily until the ulcers have healed. Also apply Vitamin E Oil directly to the ulcers 2-3 times per day.

Increase your intake of Vitamin A to about 10,000 IU per day. Also apply Vitamin A directly to the affected areas 1-2 times per day. Skip this step if you are currently pregnant though.

Make sure that you're getting a high daily dosage of Zinc. Zinc is important in the healing process of the ulcers.

Try to add Blueberries, Bilberries or Blackberries to your daily meals. These all help to improve the integrity of the capillaries, speeding up the healing process of leg ulcers. You can also take them in supplemental form.

Many Uses of Mineral Oil

Mineral oil has many uses, it is a moisturizer for dry or irritated skin and it will even treat ear mites in cats. Mineral oil is readily available commercially, but there are some potential side effects to be aware of with long-term use. Always consult a qualified physician before using alternative medical treatments, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Baby Care

Mineral oil treats diaper rash and cradle cap in infants. It acts as a barrier for the affected areas of skin, keeping germs out. For cases of cradle cap, apply mineral oil to the scalp and cover the affected areas with warm, wet washcloths before shampooing in the bath. Check the temperature of the wet washcloths periodically to ensure that they are no cooler than room temperature to prevent a drop in your infant's body temperature. Clean and dry the diaper area thoroughly before you apply mineral oil.

Medical Uses

Professor Robert D. Cox MD, Ph.D., of the Department of Emergency Medicine and Pharmacology and the Toxicology Department at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, recommends the use of mineral oil to treat chemical burns contaminated with metallic lithium, sodium, potassium or magnesium. Mineral oil also is an inexpensive and effective laxative for humans and animals. The oil works by coating the intestinal surface and preventing the absorption of water and other fluids. The withheld water softens the stool, easing symptoms of constipation and fecal impactions. Veterinarians also treat animals that ingest lipid-soluble toxins with the oil to prevent the absorption of these toxins.

Jewelry Uses

Throughout the shipping process or everyday wear and tear, softer semi-precious gemstones without facets often become scratched or damaged. Conceal these imperfections with a drop of mineral oil and save the expense of taking your jewelry to a lapidary for repair. For severe scratches, soak the stones in the oil for several days to achieve optimal results. When your necklaces looks more like the interlocking knots of a puzzle ring than single, identifiable strands, lubricate the tangled chains in a cup of the oil before your next attempt to separate them.

Beauty Care

Apply mineral oil over areas of skin that you want to protect from hair dye stains. If harsh chemical wipes irritate your sensitive skin, apply mineral oil on a cotton ball to remove your makeup. Mineral oil is a natural skin moisturizer, cuticle softener and an alternative to shaving cream.

Alkaline Bottled Water Information

You may have heard about the need to get your body more alkaline to ensure better health, and alkaline water is one of the products designed to do that. Alkaline water promotes health by countering the negative effects of too much acidic food and drinks common in a modern diet.

Alkaline water is one of the earliest forms of bottled water, having come about from people bottling water at healing springs and wells to drink later. Now some of it is produced through a water ionizer.

Drinking alkaline water everyday could help counter the negative effects of too much acidic food, drink and general toxic living common in western industrialized nations.

Alkaline water is measured by its pH. You can drink water with a measured pH of between 7.5 and 9.5, with 9.5 being the most desirable to put your body into balance.

The antioxidant properties of ionized water are lost quickly after bottling, so only the alkalinity remains. According to Dr. Gabe Mirkin, drinking alkaline water will not affect your blood pH reading of 7.365.

Dr. T.A. Baroody in "Alkalize or Die" claims that consuming acid food and drinks hurt the kidneys, heart and colon. Chemist Stephen Lower claims that any effects of drinking alkaline water would be mitigated by your stomach acid.

Rose Hips for a Urinary Infection

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a frustrating condition that affects mostly women. Foods high in Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) such as rose hips have been shown to help cure UTIs.

What is a Urinary Infection?

A urinary infection is a bacterial attack of the urinary tract. It is frequently caused by E.Coli, and produces uncomfortable symptoms such as increased urinary frequency and a burning sensation during urination.

What Are Rose Hips?

Rose hips are the small berry-like fruit of the rose plant. They have a high concentration of Vitamin C and can be used for a range of home remedies.

How Do They work?

When ingested, the high amounts of Vitamin C change the pH balance of your urine, making it more acidic. This makes it more difficult for the bacteria to flourish in the urinary tract.

Fresh rose hips are similar to cranberries and can be consumed as a snack or used in recipes. Drinking tea made from dried rose hips is also a quick and simple way to get a dose into your system.

Rose water, a diluted solution similar to rose hip tea, can be used as a topical treatment to relieve external itching and burning, however medical professionals advise against this.

How to Use Garum Extract to Reduce Anxiety & Stress

Since as long ago as ancient Roman times, garum extract has been used as a remedy for a variety of conditions. It is made by boiling down the entrails of certain species of deep-sea fish into a potent liquid. Today, it is most commonly used as an ingredient in natural health supplements which are marketed as remedies for anxiety and stress. Supplements containing garum extract are widely available online and at specialty retailers.

Search for a source of supplements containing garum extract. If you want to buy locally and over-the-counter, start by looking in local vitamin retailers, natural medicine shops, natural food stores and large pharmacies. Don't hesitate to ask a salesperson or pharmacist to help you find what you need, and make sure you check the labels to see that garum extract is listed as an active ingredient. If you want to shop online, search within your favorite vitamin and natural medicine sites for "garum." Again, check each product page carefully to make sure garum extract is listed as an active ingredient. If you'd rather, check the Resources section below for links to two of the most common supplements that contain this ingredient.

How to Find Yourself

How to Find Yourself

In today's hectic world, people often experience a sense of losing one's self. But, it is possible to rediscover yourself. Finding yourself is about nurturing a connection to the person you want to be. If you feel lost or detached, the following steps will help you find yourself.

Learn to put your needs first. This can be difficult, especially if you have a spouse and children. Obviously you can't complete forget about your family's needs; however, you can put aside some time for yourself everyday.

Take a break. Schedule some quiet time to be alone with yourself. Put away thoughts about work, family obligations and all the other stress in your life. Focus on you. Think about what you'd do with your life if there were no obstacles. Decide how you would spend your time if money wasn't an issue.

Imagine what you'd like others to say about you once you're gone. Think about the words you'd want them to use when describing you. These words say a lot about the type of person you want to be.

Remember times throughout your life when you were happiest. Think about what you were doing and who you were with. Identify what about those experiences made you so happy and satisfied.

Use a journal to record your answers to these questions and any other relevant thoughts. Keep journaling on a regular basis. Go back and review the discoveries you have about yourself. Over time, you'll start to understand what makes you happy and what type of person you want to be. Then, you can go out and be that person.

Methods for Detoxing the Body

Detox and body cleansing have been in use since the ancient Romans and Greeks. Detoxification is an alternative treatment that claims to remove harmful toxins from the body. There are several different detox diets and cleanses, including fasting and colon cleansing.

Chris Strychacz, PhD and a psychological researcher for the Naval Health Research Center located in San Diego, California, defines fasting as ingesting water only and also some drink juices. During this sort of detox, a person is only allowed to ingest water for a period of time. The length of the fast is up to the person, but certain religions, like Christianity, require fasting for a set amount of days. In ancient China, fasting is used to "lighten up" after a long winter and shed any fat that was stored for warmth during the cold months.

Colon Cleansing

Colon cleansing involves the use of colonics and oral aids. Oral aids include laxatives, fiber and dietary supplements. A colonic is a procedure that involves injecting water, sometimes with herbs or other additives, into the colon through an enema. This method of colon cleansing can lead to some complications if not performed correctly, and it is always recommended to discuss any detoxification methods with a licensed physician. Colon cleansing through colonics and laxatives can lead to a high risk of dehydration, and it is recommended that someone trying these methods stay hydrated with water or other beverages that contain electrolytes. Also, be sure that the practitioner performing the colonic uses disposable equipment, and be sure to ask for a list of any supplements being used in the procedure. Though herbal ingredients are natural, they can still sometimes cause an allergic reaction.

Master Cleanse

The Master Cleanse was originally created by Stanley Burroughs in his book "The Master Cleanse" and was later revisited by Peter Glickman's book "Lose Weight, Have More Energy and Be Happier in 10 Days." The three phases of the Master Cleanse are Ease In, The Lemonade Diet and Ease Out. During Day 1 of the Ease In phase, all processed foods and meat are removed from the diet. Only fruits and vegetables are allowed. On Day 2, only fruit and vegetable juice is allowed, and on Day 3, only orange juice mixed with water and two tablespoons of maple syrup for energy are allowed. The Lemonade Diet portion of the Master Cleanse involves mixing 14 tablespoons of lemon juice, 14 tablespoons of maple syrup and 1/2 a teaspoon of cayenne pepper or as much as you can stand into 1 liter of water. Keep the other liter of water plain to cleanse the pallet of the lemon juice. The Ease Out phase of the diet is essentially the same as the Ease In phase, but in reverse. Day 1 involves drinking three 1-liter containers of orange juice with 2 tablespoons of maple syrup each. On Day 2, fruit and vegetable juice or broth is allowed. Day 3 allows solid vegetables, and Day 4 allows all foods again. Some side effects of the Master Cleanse include cravings, irritability and tiredness. Consult with a licensed physician before undertaking the Master Cleanse or any detoxification method.

Natural Home Remedy for Removing Dark Marks on the Skin

Dark marks on the skin can result from scarring, excess pigmentation, overexposure to the sun or an uneven distribution of melanin in the skin. Regardless of the cause, there are several effective home remedies that can help to alleviate the problem. If you continue to have dark areas on your skin, have them examined by your physician, as they may be indicative of a serious problem.

Homemade remedies can help in fading dark marks on the skin, but may take a while. Patience is key.

Citrus fruits such as lemons, limes and oranges all have the ability to gently bleach the skin. Put juice from these fruits onto a cotton ball and wipe over the affected area. Let dry. This action can be repeated several times a day. Alternatively, you can slice up some citrus fruits, lemons in particular, and massage the area with the slices. This too, will help fade the dark spots.

Cucumber juice is another good option for fading dark skin areas. Saturate a cotton ball with the juice and apply to the affected area. Let dry. Repeat several times a day to see results.

Almond oil is useful. Massage about 1 tsp. almond oil into the affected region, and allow to dry. Remove with a little bit of rose water.

Regular massage using vitamin E oil can help reduce the appearance of dark marks. Simply break open a capsule of vitamin E and apply liberally to the skin. Vitamin E also benefits the skin by restoring moisture and suppleness.

Apply fresh tomato pulp directly to the skin to remove dark areas. Leave it on for one hour, then rinse completely with warm water. The vitamin C in tomatoes helps to fade dark spots.

Place a few slices of raw potato on your skin for 20 minutes. This will help to remove blemishes and dark spots.

Crush a few almonds and soak in water overnight. In the morning make a paste of the almonds mixed with a teaspoon of water. Apply to dark areas and let dry. Rinse off with warm water. Repeat for best results.

Combine 1 tsp. turmeric with 1 tsp. lemon juice and apply to problem areas. Let dry and rinse with warm water.

Make a paste using 1 tsp. each oatmeal, yogurt and tomato juice. Apply to dark areas, let dry and rinse thoroughly with warm water. Repeat as often as desired.

Apply a few drops of honey to areas of hyper-pigmentation on the skin. Continue the use of honey for at least one month to experience results.

Remember to drink plenty of water every day, at least eight to 10 8 oz. glasses. Eat a healthy diet that contains plenty of whole grains, vegetables, fruit and lean protein.

While natural home remedies can help lighten dark areas on the skin to some degree, if you are still bothered by this condition, consult your physician for other treatment options.

How Does a Pancreases Cleanse Work?

How Does a Pancreases Cleanse Work?

Purpose of the Pancreas

The pancreas is a very important organ. Although it assists in many processes throughout the body, the most important functions of the pancreas have to do with protease and insulin. Protease is an enzyme produced by the pancreas that breaks down the protein in the food that we eat. When the kidney does not produce enough protease, the protein we eat does not break down sufficiently, which can cause health problems and a lack of nutrition. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that allows the body to store and use energy through glycogen. If the body cannot produce and regulate insulin, health problems including diabetes can become serious issues.

A pancreas cleanse usually starts with at least 24 hours of fasting. This allows the body to pass through any remaining toxins that may have been ingested before the cleanse and prepares the body for the cleansing ahead.

Water is the key to a successful pancreas cleanse. Staying adequately hydrated is important during the pre-fast as well as through the entire cleansing process. Staying adequately hydrated helps increase the liquid volume in your system, which causes your body to have an additional need to eliminate the increased liquid though urination. Along with flushing out the excess water, the body also expels the harmful toxins in the body. Water also helps keep homeostasis within the body. A balanced body helps to fight off disease and keep the body healthy.

Raw Foods

One of the major aspects of a pancreas cleanse is the use of only raw foods. When foods are processed or overcooked, they lose many of the natural enzymes that help the kidney's natural enzyme protease digest food. When the natural enzymes are killed by the cooking or processing, the kidney is forced to work harder to digest the foods. Eating only raw foods during a pancreas cleanse helps take the load off of the pancreas and floods the body with natural beneficial enzymes.

No Carbohydrates

Cutting carbohydrates out of your diet during the pancreas cleanse and limiting their intake afterward are other important aspects of a pancreas cleanse. Carbohydrates put added stress on the pancreas, causing it to eventually wear down. Too many carbohydrates can affect the amount of insulin produced, helping the onset of diabetes.

Supplements such as creon are an important part of a pancreas cleanse. Look for supplements that have high concentrations of pancreatic enzymes to help strengthen your pancreas's ability to help digestion in the gastrointestinal track.

Exercise is also crucial to any cleansing process. When you exercise, your body benefits from improved blood circulation as well as an increased volume of oxygen in the blood. This increase of oxygen-rich blood eventually reaches the pancreas, helping fine-tune and optimize its processes.

Stress can also hinder the workings of the pancreas. Any time that your body experiences high levels of stress it dampens the immune system and puts stress on your vital organs, including your pancreas. Stress tends to negatively affect digestive function, while relaxation helps promote healthy digestion (see Revolutionhealth.com). While performing a pancreas cleanse, promote the cleansing process by practicing stress reduction techniques such as yoga and meditation.

Homemade Antifungal Cream

If you have a fungal problem, such as athlete's foot or a skin rash, there are many types of treatment available. One easy way to treat fungus is to try an at-home and all-natural cream remedy that may help clear up any fungus you have and save you a trip to the pharmacy.

White Vinegar

White vinegar is a natural antifungal and antimicrobial treatment. This is why white vinegar can be used to treat a number of fungus problems or infections. While applying it by itself can be effective, use it in your homemade cream, along with other natural ingredients, for added punch.

Add Some Baking Soda

Another natural antifungal is baking soda. To make your cream, mix about 3 tbsp. of white vinegar to about 1/2 cup of baking soda and stir into a creamy paste. If you are dealing with a fungus such as athlete's foot, baking soda will also help neutralize odors and refresh your tired soles.

Apply Cream

Once you have made your cream, keep it refrigerated and apply a thin layer to the affected area at least three times a day for about a week to clear up the fungus. Allow the cream to dry and then rinse it off with cold water or just wipe it off with a clean towel. Remember when applying to not double-dip your applicator, be it a cloth, a cotton ball or your hands, into the cream as doing so will contaminate it.

Tips and Warnings

If you are dealing with a foot or hand fungus, apply the cream to the area and then cover it with either gloves or socks and allow it to sit for about 30 minutes; then rinse off with cold water.

If the baking soda and vinegar method doesn't seem to be working after a few days, try another natural at-home cream that is made with garlic and lemon juice. Start by finely chopping two to three cloves of garlic and then mashing them up in a bowl. Add lemon juice and mix into a paste. You can apply this as you would the baking-soda-vinegar mixture.

These treatments are meant to be done at least three times a day for a period of about a week. If your fungus doesn't seem to be improving or gets worse, see your dermatologist.

Homemade Gripe Water

Homemade Gripe Water

Gripe water is an old, natural remedy used to help babies with intestinal problems or upset stomachs. While it is most commonly given to infants through a dropper or a bottle, adults can also drink it when they have stomach problems. Ingredients in gripe water vary depending on the individual making it, so you can try a basic recipe or make one that works best for your child or the particular ailment.

Measure out the herbal ingredients you plan to use. All the ingredients listed help to soothe the stomach and gastrointestinal track in some way, but most people do not use all the ingredients together. If this is your first time making gripe water, use fennel seeds, chamomile and ginger. Use 1 to 2 tbsp. of each ingredient. Crush the fennel seeds, if not already crushed.

Place all the ingredients inside the tea ball.

Measure out 3 cups of water and place it into a pot along with the tea ball. Bring the water to a boil and let it boil for two minutes.

Turn the heat down to a simmer and let the gripe water simmer for 10 to 20 minutes.

Remove the pan from the heat and take out the tea ball. Add honey or sugar to sweeten the water if you like. Keep in mind that infants under one year shouldn't be given honey.

Store the gripe water in a tightly-sealed container, but dispose after 24 hours. Give the gripe water in doses of 5 to 10 milliliters, up to six times a day.

How to Treat Liver Cirrhosis with Vitamins

A good way to help treat Liver Cirrhosis is with vitamins. Although vitamins can not cure Liver Cirrhosis they can help to control the condition and prevent further complications. Vitamins also can help to improve your chances of survival, and sometimes even help to reverse some of the damage of Liver Cirrhosis.

Take Vitamin E in supplemental form daily. Vitamin E has been shown to help decrease the damage of Liver Cirrhosis and can also help to reduce immune abnormalities that contribute to the development of Liver Cirrhosis. Ideally you should take around 500 IU per day.

Take Vitamin D in supplemental form daily. Vitamin D has been shown to prevent a loss of bone in patients with Liver Cirrhosis. This treatment works especially well for those with Primary Biliary Cirrhosis, who are at increased risk for bone loss.

Take Vitamin K in supplemental form daily. Vitamin K has been shown to help prevent Liver Cirrhosis but it has recently been shown to help improve the condition as well.

Take one tablespoon two to three times a day until the cough goes away. Take a tablespoon of pure honey before going to bed at night to help ease sore throat pain for a restful night's sleep.

Chamomile has long been valued for it's calming properties in holistic medicine, but it has value for those suffering from constant sneezing as well. Utilize chamomile in one of two different ways for this ailment. Boil the chamomile and then put a towel over your head and breath in the vapors. This will help to open the nasal passages and reduce inflammation in the lining of the nose. Brew a strong cup of chamomile tea and benefit from its natural antihistamine properties. Drink a cup two to three times a day for maximum healing effect. Sweeten with honey for a natural sweetener and as a way to relieve a sore throat.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar, with its wide range of uses, has become a dependable product to have around the house. For persistent coughs, put one or two teaspoons of vinegar in a glass of water. Keep it beside your bed to use when you feel a cough coming on. Stir with a spoon, and take a drink as needed. Vinegar dissolves mucus and reduces inflammation. Mix half a cup of honey with three to four tablespoons of vinegar. Honey has antibacterial properties that help to speed up the recovery process. Consume one tablespoon of the mixture before going to bed. Supplement your regular routine with this mixture during the day as well.

Fennel Seeds

Make a tea from fennel seeds to relieve sneezing attacks. Boil two tablespoons of fennel seeds in one cup of water. Simmer until the water has been reduced to half the original quantity. Filter the tea to remove the remaining seeds. Take one tablespoon every morning and evening for a few days. Line the nose with a dab of petroleum jelly to ease any irritation from sneezing.

Alternative to Estrogen Cream

Estrogen cream is one option among many in hormone replacement therapy. Hormone replacement therapy is offered to menopausal and post-menopausal women when their estrogen levels naturally decline; the use of the cream increases production of estrogen. When estrogen levels drop, women suffer from erratic periods, vaginal dryness, hot flashes, sleep disturbances, irritability, mood swings, increased body fat and thinning hair. There are alternatives to estrogen creams that can help balance a woman's estrogen levels naturally.

Estrogen Cream Usage

In "Smart Medicine for Menopause: Hormone Replacement Therapy and Its Natural Alternatives," Dr. Sandra Cabot explains that estrogen creams are used to elevate decreased estrogen levels in menopausal women. The creams are inserted into your vagina with a special applicator, so that the medication can be placed deep into the vaginal canal. The cream is used right after emptying your bladder and just before you go to sleep at night. The cream is then absorbed by the vaginal lining and distributed into your blood stream to help increase your estrogen levels and diminish the symptoms associated with menopause. Often times, the medication is coupled with a 12-day course of progesterone tablets every three months to prevent the excessive production of estrogen.

In "The Estrogen Alternative: A Guide to Natural Hormonal Balance," Raquel Martin and Judi Gerstung explain that licorice will help to regulate estrogen levels. Licorice is adaptogenic and helps your body regulate imbalances. If your estrogen levels are too high, licorice consumption reduces estrogen levels. If they are too low, consuming licorice can increase your estrogen levels. Take 1 to 5g of licorice; boil it in a cup of hot water for 15 minutes. Consume the beverage three times daily to balance your estrogen levels, or take 250 to 500 mg capsules of licorice three times a day.

Side effects of licorice consumption include muscular pain in your limbs and numbness in your extremities. The herb is not recommended for people with kidney issues, heart complications, liver conditions, diabetes or those who are obese. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not consume the herb without a doctor's consent, and you should not use this product for longer than six weeks. Licorice may interfere with diuretics, ACE inhibitors, aspirin, diogoxin, corticosteroids, insulin, laxatives and oral contraceptives.

Black Cohosh

Martin and Judi Gerstung also explain that black cohosh helps to balance out irregular estrogen levels. Black cohosh has glycosides as well as isoferulic acids that offer anti-inflammatory agents. The herb also contains phytoestrogens, plant-based estrogens, which help to regulate your estrogen levels. Consume 40 to 80 mg of black cohosh daily in capsule form, or use black cohosh tincture by mixing 2 to 4 ml of the tincture in a cup of water to make a tea.

Some side effects associated with the use of black cohosh include joint pains, nausea, a reduced heart rate, the onset of tremors, visual difficulties, vomiting, diarrhea, vertigo and headaches. Women that have a history of breast or uterine cancer should not use this herb, and this herb should be avoided by individuals with existing liver conditions since liver toxicity has been reported in some individuals after using black cohosh. Pregnant women cannot use this herb; it stimulates uterine contractions which can lead to a miscarriage, and breastfeeding women should also avoid this herb.

In "The Estrogen Decision: Self Help Book," Dr. Susan Lark explains that turmeric is excellent for promoting liver health, and your liver health is important to the regulation of estrogen in your body. Your liver breaks down excessive amounts of estrogen and expels excessive estrogen levels from the body. Consume 400 to 600 mg of turmeric in capsule form three times a day to promote healthy liver functioning, or consume 30 to 90 drops of turmeric extract daily.

Excessive amounts of turmeric over a long period of time can cause gastrointestinal difficulties and ulcers. Turmeric can reduce blood sugar levels when it is combined with certain diabetic medications, so consultation with a doctor before using turmeric is advised if you have diabetes. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not use this herb.

How to Treat Dry Skin With Oatmeal

How to Treat Dry Skin With Oatmeal

Oatmeal can be an effective home remedy to treat dry skin, since its texture can help gently remove dead skin cells without irritating the underlying skin layers. You can apply an oatmeal mask directly to your face, or you can soak in a warm tub filled with colloidal oatmeal, which is made from rolled oats that have been ground into a fine powder.

Dissolve several cups of colloidal oatmeal into a bathtub full of lukewarm water to treat your dry skin. You can purchase many products that contain colloidal oatmeal that has been mixed with other ingredients, such as mineral oil or baking soda that will help moisturize your skin. Or, you can make your own colloidal oatmeal by purchasing rolled oats in bulk and grinding them into a fine powder with a coffee mill or grinder.

Soak in the oatmeal bath for at least 10 minutes, allowing the water to cover every part of your body, with the exception of your face. You may wish to add a few handfuls of baking soda or Epsom salts to help reduce the itchiness that can accompany dry skin. Be aware that colloidal oatmeal will irritate your eyes, and that it will make your bathtub very slippery as well.

Rinse the oatmeal residue from your skin by pouring cool or lukewarm water over your entire body before you get out of the tub. Avoid using hot water when you treat dry skin, since the excess heat can remove your body's natural oils, drying your skin even further.

Dry yourself carefully after your oatmeal bath by gently patting yourself with a thick, absorbent towel. Drying yourself by rubbing vigorously may irritate your skin--so proceed slowly.

Treat the dry skin on your face by applying an oatmeal mask. Simply cook some rolled oats according to the instructions on the package, let the oatmeal cool down a bit, and then apply it to your face. Remove the mask when it was become crusty and dry around the edges, using cool water to rinse your face.

Alternative Medicine for Plantar Warts

Alternative Medicine for Plantar Warts

Plantar warts, which manifest themselves as small growths on the soles of the feet, can be unsightly and painful. Simple and unconventional alternative treatments can be effective at completely eliminating warts

Alternative Medicine for Wart Removal

Plantar warts are caused by the human papillomavirus, a mild yet contagious virus contracted through direct contact. While plantar warts are generally harmless, their location on the soles of the feet means they can make standing and walking painful. The virus can also spread and form clusters of new warts around the original wart. A dermatologist can surgically remove a wart or freeze it off with liquid nitrogen, but these techniques can be painful and leave scars. Instead, many people opt to use alternative medicine to eradicate warts.

For a quick home wart-removal remedy, squish open a capsule containing 25,000 units of Vitamin A extracted from fish oil and smear it on the wart. Repeat this daily until the wart vanishes. Crushing Vitamin C into a paste and applying it to the wart, then covering the wart with a bandage might also be effective. The topical application of castor oil, Vitamin E or aloe vera gel have also been known to work. Other folk remedies include rubbing raw potato slices or lemon slices soaked for two weeks in a solution of salt and apple cider vinegar on the wart, or taping the inside of a banana skin over the wart.

The Duct Tape Remedy

Duct tape has shown to be a particularly promising alternative-medicine method for treating plantar warts. A 2002 clinical study in Cincinnati treated 51 patients with warts. Twenty-five test subjects received up to six sessions of wart-removal treatment using liquid nitrogen. The remaining 26 subjects underwent an unconventional treatment in which their warts were covered with duct tape for up to two months. Eighty-five percent of the patients treated with duct tape saw the complete disappearance of their warts, as opposed to 60% of the patients treated with liquid nitrogen.
Researchers theorize that the presence of the duct tape may create enough irritation to stimulate the immune system into ridding itself of the wart.

Those who wish to try the duct tape remedy at home should apply a small patch of duct tape over a plantar wart and leave it alone for a week. After a week, remove the tape and soak the foot, then massage the surface of the wart lightly with a pumice stone or an emery board. Apply more tape over the wart and repeat this process until the wart is gone.

Is Ocean Water Good for Swelling Feet?

If you should happen to find your feet swelling abnormally, you may be suffering from peripheral edema, or the abnormal build-up of fluid in the feet, ankles or legs. Such swelling is common and might occur as a result of air travel, weight gain, prolonged standing, a diet high in salt or pregnancy. However, swollen feet may be easily remedied.

Magnesium Sulfate

The best course of action is simply to elevate the feet and let the fluid drain from them. If this fails, yet another common course of action is to soak the feet in magnesium sulfate, a naturally occurring mineral otherwise known as epsom salts. According to the Epsom Salt Industry Council, epsom salts draw the moisture out of lesions caused by rashes, such as poison ivy, and can also reduce swelling, drawing excess fluid out of the feet. The ESIC recommends adding a cup of epsom salts to a tub of warm water to soothe aching feet.

Ocean Water

If you do not have access to magnesium sulfate, ocean water can help serve the same capacity for reduction of swelling. Magnesium sulfate is present in ocean water as the substance that contributes to the absorption of sound by seawater. A soak in ocean water for the same duration as an epsom salt bath should provide similar soothing results. However, avoid drinking the water as it is dehydrating and due to the high salt content will only make swelling worse.

Gold Therapy & Arthritis

Gold Therapy & Arthritis

Gold therapy was originally used to treat infections such as tuberculosis, but in the early 1900s, doctors began using it to treat rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic autoimmune disorder that may cause joint deformity. These days, there are newer treatments with fewer side effects, so gold is only used when a patient doesnt respond to other options.

What Is Gold Therapy?

Gold therapy, also known as gold salts, is a chemical compound of the metal gold. Gold is classified as a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD), meaning that it decreases the pain and swelling of arthritis while also preventing joint damage.

Dosage and Administration

Most rheumatologists use injectable forms of gold compounds, such as sodium thiomalate and aurothioglucose. An oral form of gold exists, but it is less effective than the injections. Patients take small doses of gold ranging from 10 to 50 mg weekly, until a response has occurred or until 1 g has been administered. If the patients response is favorable, injections are continued every three weeks for three months and finally tapered to a monthly injection. Younger children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis receive a smaller dosage. Some patients may take as long as six months to respond to treatment.

Side Effects

Up to 35 percent of patients receiving gold injections discontinue them due to side effects. These may include a rash, ulcerations of the mouth or tongue, blood in the urine, damage to bone marrow or impaired kidney function. Musculosketal pain may increase while taking gold injections. Long-term use may cause an irreversible bluish discoloration of the skin.

According to the Johns Hopkins Arthritis Center, most rheumatoid arthritis patients benefit from gold treatments if given intramuscularly. Gold injections do not cure arthritis but can help keep it under control by relieving pain, reducing swelling and preventing joint damage. Scientists and doctors have debated how gold works, but no one knows for sure.

Other Considerations

Gold preparations are not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women due to numerous side effects and unknown effects on the fetus. Many rheumatologists also give their patients other drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen and corticosteroids, along with gold therapy. Tell your doctor about any other medications you may be taking so she can determine if there will be an interaction with the gold.

Newer Therapies

Since the 1990s, gold compounds have mostly been replaced by newer DMARDs such as methotrexate, which is also used to treat some types of cancer. The newer drugs produce fewer side effects and require less monitoring than gold. Johns Hopkins Arthritis Center says methotrexate may produce favorable results in six to eight weeks.
