How to Stop Hot Flashes Naturally With Fruit

How to Stop Hot Flashes Naturally With Fruit

Women going through menopause often experience hot flashes, which can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. Some women experience a variety of symptoms, such as sweating, rapid heart beat, dizziness, redness in the face and nausea. To help counter the unsettling effects of hot flashes, you can make your own specialized drink designed to reduce the occurrence of hot flashes and decrease the magnitude of hot flashes. Three Fat Chicks on a Diet, a weight loss forum, reports that the bioflavonoids in citrus fruits have phytoestrogenic properties that help reduce hot flashes. Eating more of these fruits can may reduce hot flashes.

Chilled Citrus Fruit

Remove the skins of any citrus fruits you are using to make the fruit salad. Remove the rind of the watermelon with a large knife. Peel the banana and remove the meat of the banana.

Separate the oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruit. Section each piece of fruit into halves. Section each citrus fruit until each piece of fruit is separated into one section each. Cut the watermelon into four-inch sections. Slice the banana into circular bite-size chunks. Place the citrus fruits in one bowl. Place the bananas and watermelon in separate bowls. Place these bowls off to the side.

Place two sections of the citrus fruits on a cutting board. Cut each section into halves. Continue cutting the fruit until they are the size of bite-size chunks. Place these back into the bowl.

Cut the watermelon sections into bite-size chunks. Place these chunks in the bowl.

Pour freshly squeezed orange juice over all of the bite-size chunks of fruit. The acid in this juice keeps the fruit from turning brown; the juice also gives you an extra dose of Vitamin C.

Eat the fruit or place the fruit in the refrigerator and served chilled. Use colorful toothpicks to add an extra dash of color to the fruit salad.

Fruit Smoothie

Peel the orange, lime and lemon. Remove the outer core of the small watermelon. Use a cutting board to cut the watermelon and the citrus fruits into bite-size chunks. Peel the banana and cut it into small chunks. Place the banana chunks inside the bowl with the other fruit chunks and set it aside.

Place all the fruit pieces in a blender. Drop in three to five ice cubes. If you want more of a slushy consistency, use more ice cubes.

Pour one cup of orange juice inside the blender. Blend the fruit, orange juice and ice cubes together. Once the items are well blended, pour the mixture into a cup or glass.

Natural Wart Remedies

Warts develop because of an infection on the skin. Since they are caused by a virus they are contagious, but only for people susceptible to the virus. Warts are elevated, rough, dry bumps on the skin and can appear just about anywhere on the body. Some warts disappear on their own, while others require treatment. Consult your physician if you are continually plagued with warts.

Calendula Cream

While warts often go away on their own, some stick around and require removal. For these, at-home treatments are an effective option. Calendula cream is commonly used to treat various skin conditions, warts being no exception. Apply this herbal cream twice a day to warts for effective removal. Calendula has antiviral properties and stimulates the immune system, helping to remove the wart. Mix a couple of drops of oil of lemon into the calendula cream for even more effective removal. Lemon oil also has antiviral properties.

Dandelion is another treatment option for getting rid of warts. Rub the sap from the root of a fresh dandelion plant on the wart twice a day until it disappears. Dandelion tea is often taken internally to treat skin conditions, but the milky sap from the root can be applied directly to a wart. This process will take several weeks or even months to work.

Whole lemon is also a possibility when it comes to treating warts. The white, fleshy part of the peel in particular contains antiseptic properties. Before going to bed for the night, put a small piece of lemon peel, with the white side facing down, over the wart and tape over with a bandage. Consistent application of the peel overnight will help to soften and remove the wart.

Onion is another alternative for the home treatment of warts. Split an onion in half, scoop out the center section, and put in 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Allow to set for a few hours until a liquid onion/salt solution appears in the center of the onion. Apply this salt and onion juice liquid to the wart two or three times a day. Continue this treatment until the wart disappears.

Oil of Oregano

Oregano oil has antibacterial properties and can be helpful in getting rid of warts. Put one drop of oil of oregano onto the wart nightly and cover it with a bandage. The wart should be eradicated in a couple of days.

Brain-Building Games

Brain-building games are meant to stimulate and captivate the mind. It's great for brain aerobics, and especially good for individuals heading into seniorville. Brain stimulation prompts new brain cell development, which helps to replace dead and dying brain cells. Contrary to common belief, our brain cells don't actually start to die as we age, leading to forgetfulness or confusion. We forget because we don't exercise our brain. Exercise leads to the creating of new pathways for functioning and perception and keeps nerve pathways open and firing on all cylinders.

Stimulate the brain every day by engaging in thinking activities. Try to learn something new every day--vocabulary in a new language, a new skill, or new learning possibilities. Brain cells can be stimulated from doing a New York Times crossword puzzle or by playing Memory with a deck of cards. Take advantage of video games available on the Internet or local video stores. Such games provide interactive fun and improve hand-eye coordination while at the same time barraging our brain with new tasks.

Brain Puzzles

Play games that offer entertainment and stimulate memorization skills, such as word games, math games or puzzles, brain twisters, Sudoku, chess and checkers. Such games are known to improve attention and memory and offer a good, healthy brain workout on a daily basis. Memory pattern or card games increase spatial recall while other games help the brain focus on retaining attention, focus or reasoning.

Problem Solving

Engage in problem-solving games, even if you don't like reasoning or math. These are especially helpful brain-building games for those who typically avoid reasoning games due to lack of patience or ability, because such games focus on reasoning skills that help keep brain cells active and functioning at optimal levels. Challenge the brain by engaging in thinking games or tasks that you usually don't do for optimal benefits. You don't have to win every game you play, or come up with the right answer every time. It's the thinking process that's good for your brain. You have to exercise your brain just like you would any other muscle in the body in order for it to work longer, harder and better for you for years to come.

Benefits of Fasting

Fasting does not necessarily suggest depriving the body of all food. Sometimes a fast includes a short period of abstinence from eating just certain foods. Fasting does not mean starving yourself. What it does mean to some people is timing when you eat, and then eating specific foods in moderation. However, consuming enough fluids throughout any fast is important to prevent dehydration. Although fasting can be a controversial issue, the value of physiological fasting as a treatment for many chronic health conditions continues to be studied.

The possible health benefits of fasting are thought to be many and include improved immune system function, increased energy, and an overall sense of well-being. The physiological benefits of fasting have been known to lower systolic blood pressure, body temperature, and cholesterol, in addition to lowering glucose levels in the blood. The body's metabolic rate also slows during a fast, allowing it to conserve energy, thereby contributing to the healing process.

Many advocates of regular fasting maintain that it contributes to a longer life by cleaning the body of harmful toxins. They believe that chemicals absorbed into the body from the environment are stored in the body's fat. When a person fasts, the body must rely on these reserves, as an energy source. As the body breaks down fat, toxins are released and eliminated through the function of organs like the liver, kidneys, colon, lungs, and skin. Some people believe that fasting can be used to manage weight and achieve safe weight loss and therefore may be an option to treat obesity and related hypertension.

When the body has no new sources of fuel coming in, it must use excess sugar and carbohydrates stored as fat to produce the energy it needs. Digesting food takes a lot of the body's energy. Fasting works by redirecting energy away from the digestive process to the immune system. Advocates believe that fasting benefits the body in much the same way as do rest and sleep. The assumption is that careful, regulated periods of fasting may actually aid individuals in recovering faster from illness or injury. Healing occurs, as the body is able to use more energy to repair damaged bone, tissue or organs.

Time Frame

Fasting actually begins within the first 12 -- 24 hours of not eating, when the body begins to chemically break down fat to use as energy. Some people fast for only one day each week, during which time they might go without eating just certain foods like prepared or junk foods. Other people go on a longer fast at least once or twice each year. The general consensus seems to be that long fasts are more beneficial for healing than short fasts. Individuals who fast for more than a day say that they usually stop feeling hungry after about the third day. Yet those who fast report having more energy than normal despite not feeling hungry. However, even people who fast several times each year say that when hunger returns, it's time to break the fast. They recommend eating lightly at first, adding solid food back into the diet gradually.

During a fast, a person needs to consume adequate calories for health in order to avoid becoming malnourished. However, if not done correctly, doctors warn that fasting may be dangerous to one's health. Some people experience headaches or joint pain during the first few days. Other adverse effects of fasting may include fatigue, dizziness, and weakness. If you feel tired or weak during a fast, you should rest. A juice fast is considered to be a safer alternative because the body gets enough nutrients. Fruit and vegetable juices are also easy to digest.

Expert Insight

Health experts say that most healthy individuals have enough fat stored in the body to live without food for several weeks, as long as they keep themselves well hydrated. Starvation only occurs when the body has exhausted its fat reserves and must use tissue from vital organs as a source of energy to survive. Yet because of the many potential benefits, the medical community continues to study the effects of fasting for enhancing immune function. Since even animals instinctively fast when they are sick or injured, a person's loss of appetite may well be a normal, as well as an effective response to illness.

Alternative Treatments for Yeast Infections

Alternative Treatments for Yeast Infections

Anyone with a yeast infection has a right to know all of their options before making a decision about treatment. The following information can provide a good background for an upcoming discussion with a primary care physician.

What's Yeast?

Yeast is a component of beer, wine and bread.

Yeast is a fungus, and one type of yeast plays a critical role in the foods that we eat. For example, yeast is what makes bread rise and it can also be a key ingredient in cornbread. Furthermore, vintners and brewers use yeast to promote the fermentation of wine and beer. Another type of yeast, called Candida albicans, is far less benign and can cause yeast infections. It can be found all over the body, but prefers moist areas. The fungus can get into the body through open cuts or sores, irritating that particular area and potentially spreading throughout the body. Also, if antibacterial products are used frequently in a certain area, Candida albicans can multiply unchecked. (The bacteria usually keeps tabs, so to speak, on the amount of yeast in a certain region.)

Common Symptoms

A photograph of a yeast infection.

Though most people associate yeast infection with the vaginal region, yeast infections can also occur in the mouth or the arm pit. Symptoms for vaginal yeast infections include pain or burning during urination or intercourse, thick discharge or an unusual smell. A topical yeast infection, like under the arm, will cause a red rash that can itch or hurt. An oral yeast infection will look like a very red tongue that may or may not have thick white patches on top.

Standard Treatments

Oral medications are often prescribed to fight yeast infections.

While you will need a prescription for any treatment designed for oral yeast infections, antifungal creams or powders are commonly used to treat vaginal yeast infections and are available over the counter. Oral medications designed to fight the fungus are also popular among those with vaginal yeast infections. The two ingredients you should look for are fluconazole and itraconazole; ketoconazole should be avoided due to studies that showed it can cause damage to vital organs.

Alternative Treatments

Who knew a clove of garlic could be used as a remedy for yeast infections?

Boric acid suppositories have shown promise in terms of treating yeast infections. You can get this powder at a pharmacy without a prescription, but you will probably need to pack it in an empty gelatin capsule yourself. One 600 mg capsule should be placed in the vagina nightly for 14 days. If you're not big on the DIY capsules, you can order the capsules online. One such example is called Yeast Arrest.

A garlic suppository can be made by peeling one clove, wrapping it in gauze, and inserting it into the vagina. Or you can insert potassium sorbate that has been diluted with water.

If you shy away from suppositories, you can douche with a mixture of yogurt and water, or water and vinegar, to promote a healthy balance between the yeast and the bacteria. In addition to any treatments, alternative or otherwise, unsweetened cranberry juice or cranberry capsules are recommended.

So Which Treatments Are Better?

It is in your best interest to speak to a health care professional to determine which treatment is best for you. They may be surprised, or even concerned, if you say you would prefer a garlic suppository to the standard over-the-counter creams. But the statement will undoubtedly prompt discussion of the benefits and problems with homemade remedies. In the end, it is strictly a personal decision but do be careful with any DIY remedies because boric acid and potassium sorbate can be dangerous if not used correctly.

Natural Way of Healing Scars

Scar tissue results from an injury or trauma on your skin; injuries cause your body to send out signals to basal cells in your skin to create thicker tissue to reinforce and heal the injured area. The site of the injury will develop a scab over the surface; beneath the surface your basal cells, located in the bottommost layer of the derma, will begin the process of forming keratinized tissue: thick scar tissue to protect the area. A scar can occur after an injury or a surgical incision, but there are numerous natural remedies to help diminish their formation.

Gotu Kola

In The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook: Your Comprehensive Reference to the Best Herbs for Healing, James A. Duke explains that gotu kola is a natural remedy for dealing with scar tissue and for scar prevention. This herb contains triterpenoids that can speed wound healing and increase the blood supply to wounds. Use gotu kola either topically or ingest it for the treatment of scars, tissue swelling, psoriasis, boils, and other skin problems. This herb speeds wound healing and deters scarring while softening the skin. Take 60 to 120 mg capsules of gotu kola two to three times a week to reduce scarring. As an ointment, place gotu kola directly on scar tissue; apply the product as the packaging instructs.

Children under 18 years old should not use gotu kola. Do not take this herb orally for more than six weeks to avoid potential liver damage. Gotu Kola contains asiaticosides, a component that may cause cancer in mice. Do not use this herb if you have a history of cancer. Possible side effects include a skin rash, gastrointestinal upset, fatigue, and burning sensations. Pregnant and breast feeding women should not consume gotu kola; this herb can affect female fertility. This herb may interfere or interact with cholesterol-controlling medications, diabetic medications, diuretics, and some sedatives.

Aloe Vera

In Aloe Vera: Nature's Soothing Healer Diane Gage explains that aloe vera is a natural remedy that speeds the bodily healing process, stimulates cellular growth, and hinders the formation of scar tissue. Aloe is 99 percent water, but it also contains polysaccharides and glycoproteins; this plant diminishes inflammation and pain, and encourages skin growth and reparation. Use aloe on children and adults as a topical application. Use a plant leaf slit down the middle to derive the gel directly from the plant. Apply the gel three times a day to reduce the appearance of scars and to prevent scar formation. You can also purchase aloe vera gel over the counter to apply to scars.

Do not use aloe vera for wounds that are not scabbed over, or for deep wounds that are still healing. Signs of allergy may include a skin rash when using aloe vera; stop using it if you develop skin irritation.

Vitamin E

In The Real Vitamin and Mineral Book, 4th edition: The Definitive Guide to Designing Your Personal Supplement Program, authors Shari Lieberman and Nancy Bruning explain that vitamin E is a natural remedy for treating scars. Vitamin E naturally promotes wound healing; apply vitamin E topically or consume it internally to diminish scar formation. Puncture a hole in one or two vitamin E capsules with a pin, then spread the oil directly on scabs to promote faster healing and to diminish scarring risks.

Abundant food sources of vitamin E include eggs, walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, liver, corn oil margarine, sunflower seeds, spinach, kale, turnip greens, mustard greens, collard greens, beet greens, asparagus, sweet potatoes, yams, mayonnaise, and dark green leafy vegetables. Consume 400 International Units (IU) of vitamin E per day for scar formation prevention, but do not exceed that amount to avoid vitamin toxicity. This vitamin may interfere with antidepressants, antipsychotics, aspirin, AZT, beta blockers, cholesterol-controlling medications, cyclosporine, mebendazoel, tamoxifen, hormone replacement medications, warfarin, and Orlistat.

Neti Pot Information

Neti Pot Information

A neti pot is a small container, shaped like a genie's lamp or teapot. Its purpose is a wellness technique whereby warm, salty water is poured into one nostril and out the other. Commonly known as "nasal irrigation", in the Yoga traditions this is called "Jala Neti".

The use of a neti pot is sometimes referred to as
The use of a neti pot is sometimes referred to as "nose hose".

Neti pot use is believed to cleanse bacteria, dirt and pollen from the nasal passages while balancing the viscosity of the mucous lining. explains that this creates a balanced nasal state whereby "the body's natural mechanisms against nasal infections such as hayfever, allergies, sinusitis and other upper respiratory complaints like sore throats and coughs, post nasal drip, inflammation of tonsils and adenoids" are reprogrammed. This helps to drain sinus cavity blockages.

Some neti pots are dishwasher safe.

The neti pot technique is considered a "Kriya", a Sanskrit term referring to a collection of cleansing and wellness rituals. These rituals are attributed to the ancient Himalayan Yoga masters, whose lineage of teachings goes back thousands of years.

Natural Ways to Get Rid of Scalp Odor

Scalp odor comes from the apocrine glands that produce a fatty sweat in areas of the body where there is more hair. When you are under stress, the gland contracts, and the sweat is pushed to the surface of the skin where bacteria breaks it down. This bacterial breakdown of apocrine sweat can be the cause of scalp odor. There are natural ways to get rid of the odor.

Herbal Treatments

Massage jojoba oil into the scalp and leave it on for an hour. Aloe vera will soothe the scalp; it is an ingredient in many natural shampoos. Neem oil from India is a natural antiseptic; it will remove unwanted bacteria, thus reducing the possibility of odor. Olive oil is also good for the scalp. Massage it in and wrap a towel around your head. Leave olive oil on the hair for 15 to 20 minutes. Regular natural care for your scalp will not only reduce odor-causing bacteria, but also make your hair more beautiful.

A mousy scalp odor can be caused by the fungus favus, sometimes called honeycomb ringworm. It is mostly seen on young boys but can last into adulthood. The first stage is redness and inflammation; in the second stage, yellow crusts form over the hair follicles, and the hair begins to fall out. The third stage is the most severe, with large areas of hair loss. Poke root, grub root and inkberry are all detoxifying agents for favus. It is advisable, though, to also see a doctor if you suspect you have favus.

Be Clean

Bathe at least once a day; if you sweat a lot, you should bathe twice a day. This will reduce the amount of bacteria on your skin and scalp. Sometimes stress or hormonal changes can trigger the release of excess oil on your scalp, on which the bacteria feed. Shampooing will help alleviate resulting scalp odor. Gentle, plant-based shampoos are available if you need to shampoo daily. Purchase the shampoo at a natural food store or online.

Preparation and Dosage

For an alternative treatment, gather poke root in late autumn. After careful cleaning, slice lengthwise or crosswise and dry it. Put to tsp of the dried root in a cup of water, bring to a boil, and then simmer for 10 minutes. Take three times in one day. To consume as a tincture, take to 1 ml three times a day. Take only small amounts of poke root, because overdose can make you very sick and can be fatal.

Home Remedy for Pregnancy Hyperpigmentation

The pregnancy mask, otherwise known as hyperpigmentation, indicates that your skin is producing too much melanin, usually because of hormone imbalance or sun exposure during pregnancy. While hyperpigmentation is usually nothing to worry about, it is very noticeable, and you may want to try to remove it without harsh creams that might be unsafe during pregnancy. There are several home remedies for getting rid of hyperpigmentation, and one single remedy may not work for everyone.

Citrus has natural bleaching qualities because when you apply it to your skin, it removes the top layer of cells (see Reference 2). To make a skin lightening treatment at home, mix lime juice with turmeric powder until it is the consistency of a paste. Apply it to the dark spots on your skin. Or, you could mix lemon juice with a small amount of honey; apply that to your dark spots and rinse. Be aware that citrus may sting broken skin and eyes, so if you have broken or sensitive skin, or if your hyperpigmentation is near your eyes, citrus remedies may not be right for you.

The acetic acid found in vinegar may help naturally bleach your skin. To make a vinegar home remedy for hyperpigmentation, mix equal parts white vinegar and water, and wash your skin with the solution. Rinse well with plenty of water afterward, because vinegar has a strong odor and can leave sticky residue on your skin. Do this once a day for several days until you begin to see improvement.

According to YGo Home Remedies (see Reference 3), potatoes contain starch and mild bleaching properties that, when applied to your skin, may help with hyperpigmentation. Simply juice one potato like you would any citrus fruit and apply the juice to the dark spots on your skin once a day. If this remedy works for you, you should begin seeing results after ten days.

How to Stop Wearing Reading Glasses

How to Stop Wearing Reading Glasses

Factors such as genetics, appropriate lighting, adequate sleep and proper nutrition may play a role in determining your need for reading glasses. Many people are born with imperfectly shaped corneas or lenses and may therefore need to use glasses to read. Hyperopia and astigmatism are types of refractive errors that may require you to use reading glasses. And as people age, they can develop presbyopia requiring the use of reading glasses by the time theyre 40 or 50. Lifestyle changes or possible eye surgery might put an end to your need for reading glasses.

Get a pair of pinhole glasses. Anecdotal reports indicate that these glasses may help improve your visual acuity.

Consider daily eye exercises designed to strengthen muscles that hold the eyeball in its socket. Its possible that your vision could improve.

Sit in a chair, hold your head still and face forward. Move eyes as far to the left and then as far to the right as you can. Repeat 10 times.

Hold your head still and rotate your eyes to the left. Move your eyes in a circular pattern describing as wide a circle as possible. Repeat 10 times. Repeat the exercise 10 times in the opposite direction.

Get adequate sleep. Strained and tired eyes can force you to use your reading glasses.

Compare your ability to read in different lighting situations without your reading glasses. Try reading a book in a well-lit place such as a public library. Next try reading the same book at home using only a dim lamp for lighting. Its possible that with good lighting, you dont need reading glasses to read.

Eat plenty of fresh or frozen carrots and green, leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale to benefit your general eye health. According to the National Institutes of Health, vegetables have beta carotene, a vitamin A precursor with antioxidant properties that can help protect eyes.

Take a daily multi vitamin pill that contains the daily recommended dosage of vitamin A. Vitamin A, or retinol, is vital to the formation of chemicals in the retina that allow your eye to see in dim light.

Consult an ophthalmologist to get information about monovision surgery. This surgical procedure corrects distance vision in one eye and near vision in the other eye. Its possible that after this procedure you wont need reading glasses.

Ask the ophthalmologist about PRK - photorefractive keratectomy. This is a surgical laser procedure that may improve your vision and allow you to discontinue using reading glasses.

How Much Emu Oil to Use on the Scalp

How Much Emu Oil to Use on the Scalp

Emu oil is manufactured from the fat of emus, large Australian birds that are unable to fly. The oil is composed of a variety of fatty acids, with oleic predominating. There probably isnt a situation or condition for which emu oil isnt used, or at least marketed, for. It is even used in the machine, leather and lumber industries. When it is applied to scalp, it is usually with the intent of repairing damaged hair and treating dandruff and/or moisturizing dry skin, as well as countering baldness. Sometimes, it is also used to relieve headaches.

Evidence of Efficacy

The cosmetics industry seems to recognize the oils emollient, or moisturizing, properties. It is particularly valued for its superior texture and the apparent ability to penetrate deeply into the skin. At least one study, albeit one sponsored by American Emu Association and published in the Australasian Journal of Dermatology in 1996, confirms this effect. Its transdermal effect, specifically, does have some additional scientific support, according to a study published in the Inflammopharmacology journal in 1997. In terms of the oils ability to alleviate headaches, or effectively inhibit or reverse baldness, the evidence seems to be largely anecdotal and scientifically unsubstantiated.

Scalp Application

Regardless of the purpose--scalp or hair treatment, or headache relief--the most commonly recommended amount to apply is only a few drops. This is massaged in and left anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes, before washing out. The recommendations for frequency of application vary from three times a day to weekly to as often as necessary. Some product manufacturers suggest leaving the oil in overnight, under a towel of shower cap.

Home Treatment for an Ear Infection

Ear infections affect not only children, but also teens and adults. It is frustrating to experience a clogged or painful ear, or to find you cannot hear properly due to an infection. Ear infections are very common, particularly during the colder months of winter or during the summer swimming season.

A child with a fever and an ear infection should be treated medically as soon as possible. An adult may want to try some home treatments or remedies for an ear infection. There are several home treatments that have proven effective to help with the discomfort of ear infections.

Vinegar Solution

A home remedy for ear infections--particularly swimmers ear--is to use a vinegar solution. The way to do this is to purchase regular white vinegar at the grocery store and mix it in a 50/50 solution with purified water. Purchase a regular dropper that can be found in the baby section of a department store or a drug store. Use this to drop one to three drops in the affected ear, two or three times per day.

If the infection is swimmers ear, which is a fungus-based infection, the ear infection should clear up. At the very least you will experience some relief from the ear pain.

Warm Water Bottle

For a child's earache, though not a cure, a warm water bottle or warm compress pressed against the ear may help to relieve pain, says the University of Maryland Medical Center Website. Another suggestion is a warm bag of salt, placed against the ear. This should help to relieve the intense pressure and pain of an earache.

Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers

To relieve the pain of an earache, try an over-the-counter pain reliever. This would include popular pain relief medications such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen. These are available in children's dosages as well as for adults. Though not a cure, these medicines can be given at home to relieve pain. If the pain is intense or severe, your family doctor may need to use a stronger pain reliever, especially for an older child or an adult.

Vitamin C and Zinc

Another at-home treatment includes eating a diet rich in Vitamin C, which helps fight infection. If you are unable to eat, you can take a Vitamin C tablet, which can be purchased at the local pharmacy. Also, Zinc is good for treating infections. Both Zinc tablets and Zinc lozenges are readily available at the drug store.

Bentonite as a Pinworm Treatment

Most of the human population is infected with some sort of parasite and most of these cases exhibit no symptoms or signs of the infestation. There are several herbal remedies used to treat parasitic infestations within the body and often bentonite clay has been a useful component of many detoxification programs that help eliminate many of these parasites, such as pinworms.

About Pinworms

Pinworms are the most common parasitic type of infection suffered by humans. They are identified as being yellow white worms less than half an inch long and large enough to see with the naked eye. Pinworms inhabit the lower intestines and symptoms usually include anal itching and irritation in some cases, due to inflammation caused from the female laying her eggs around the outside of the anus. Pinworms are most common in children ages five to ten years old. Infected children will exhibit itching around the anus, mostly at night because of the activity cycle of the pinworms. Pinworms are transferable only to and from humans by means of touching items that either have pinworm eggs on them, such as bedding and clothes or by handling items previously touched by those whom are infected with pinworms and carry pinworm eggs embedded under their fingernails. These eggs are then unknowingly ingested by the new host, hatch and grow into mature adults, beginning the cycle again. There are no known pinworm prevention treatments and infections of this type usually go away on their own.

About Bentonite Clay

Bentonite clay is a popular ingredient in colon cleansing products and is available in liquid and powder form at most local herb and health food stores. Bentonite is weathered volcanic ash that has been known for centuries to assist in relieving lower intestinal and bowel irritants by cleaning the lining of the colon. As it passes through the body, bentonite clay remains undigested and its negatively charged minerals attract positively charged toxins and pesticides. As the bentonite helps clear the bowels, it increases the productivity of the bowel movements and therefore helps flush parasites and toxins from the systems.

Using Bentonite Clay

Bentonite is available in a premixed formula ready for human consumption via capsules or liquid forms that should be taken an hour before meals or once in the morning and once in the evening. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's directions before taking any medications. It is recommended to keep the percentage of your bentonite intake to less than or equal to 25% of your total diet because Bentonite remedies have been shown to limit the absorption of necessary vitamins and nutrients.

These statements are not meant to diagnose or treat any symptoms and as always, you should consult a qualified doctor or physician before attempting to treat or diagnose any symptoms and disorders. Always let your doctor know of any prescriptions you are taking before beginning a treatment regime of bentonite clay. Bentonite medications may also interfere with other nutritional supplements and should be taken with plenty of water to avoid constipation. Pregnant women should avoid using bentonite. Use extreme caution when attempting any herbal treatments; follow manufacturer labels correctly to prevent accidental overdose and increased bodily damage or dysfunction.

Apple Cider & Honey for Internal Cleansing

Among the many cleansing supplements and remedies out there, you want to choose one that is made from natural, wholesome ingredients. Apple cider vinegar and honey have been proven over time to help heal the body in several ways. Using both as a natural internal cleanser, you will begin to feel the effects after just a short time.

Apples and Honey

Going back several hundred years, apples have continuously been used for medicinal purposes as well for cleaning. Apple cider, the sweet drink normally consumed in the autumn and winter, is not able to cleanse the body. Apple cider vinegar is what is meant by apple cider internal cleansing. Apple cider vinegar is usually fermented and contains many vitamins, minerals, and other elements that help promote a healthy body. Some of those are magnesium, potassium, iron, and calcium. All these substances clean out your body by helping multiple areas rid themselves of toxins, impurities, and inflammation.

Honey is a carbohydrate compound that helps create and move energy through the body. It also promotes cell oxidation and the breaking down of harmful bacteria to keep the body clean and balanced.

Mix 1 tsp. of honey and 1 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar. Add the mixture to a cup of boiling water, stir, and enjoy. This will help cleanse your colon. Drinking a cup of this mixture daily should help regulate your digestive tract and keep you regular.

Internal Cleansing

With the combination of apples and honey in your system, there are several internal ailments that can slowly be cured. It all begins when you take in these two ingredients and they stimulate your immune system. Possibly the most important thing is that they are both used as disinfectants and antiseptics to kill harmful bacteria in the digestive tract that are responsible for causing food poisoning. Also, for body chemical and energy balance, apples and honey help restore your pH levels. That means you have greater resistance to the common cold and flu, ulcers, headaches, and even yeast infections. Apple cider vinegar and honey also make a good fiber additive that helps lower cholesterol and controls your blood sugar.

The combination also helps detoxify the liver to promote overall health and aid in weight loss.

Inflammation in your joints that could cause arthritis and osteoporosis is lowered so your bone mass can stay strong.

Best Herbal Cleanse

Best Herbal Cleanse

Herbal cleanses can help you flush out the toxins and bacteria with which you come into contact every day, through the air we breathe and the food we eat. Cleanses usually last a week or more, during which participants ingest only the food/beverage products that the cleanse calls for (often just the cleanse mixtures and fiber-rich, organic fruits and/or vegetables). Coffee, alcohol, processed foods, cigarettes and saturated fats must be completely axed from one's daily intake.

Green Tea Cleanse

Drink 3 cups of hot green tea per day mixed with 1 tsp. of maple syrup, 1/4 tsp. of cayenne pepper and 1 tbsp. of lemon juice. SIP the mixturedo not guzzle it or try to slam it down. This cleanse is reported to thoroughly flush out the system without common cleanse side effects, such as cramping, bloating or gas.

The Lemonade Master Cleanse

The creators of this cleanse emphasize the importance of using the ingredients listed, and not making any substitutes. Mix 10 oz. of filtered-only water (not simply unfiltered bottled water) with 2 tbsp. of organic lemon juice (squeezed from organic lemons only), 2 tbsp. of organic grade B maple syrup and 1/10 tsp. of cayenne pepper powder. Finally, 1/8 tsp. of unrefined, noniodized sea salt should be added to aid with the flushing out of the system. This recipe will provide a single serving and should be taken three times per day for a week.

Colon Cleanse Tea

This herbal colon cleanse is simple, requiring only common herbal household ingredients: boiled water, cloves, crushed ginger, basil leaves, mint leaves and lemon juice. After boiling about 1 cup of water, add two cloves and 2 tsp. of crushed ginger. Boil for three more minutes. Then add five or six basil leaves and three or four mint leaves to the boiling tea. Reduce the flame to a low heat and stir the mixture for another five minutes. Once the tea is a brownish color, turn off the stove and let it cool for a few minutes before adding 1 tbsp. of lemon juice. Drink the cleanse while it is still lukewarm. Take this cleanse twice a day for at least one month, eating fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains to satisfy your appetite.

Benefits of Cleanses

Though cleanses may lead to some unpleasantness during the "flushing out" phase, many alternative health food experts claim that participants often feel revitalized and report better digestion and complexions after completing a cleanse.

How to Dispose of Black Salve

Black salve is a skin ointment that is applied directly to the skin, and it has been touted as a cure for cancer, skin tags and other skin conditions. Black salve is made of roots, oils and herbs, and it is corrosive in nature. This means that it essentially burns off your skin in an attempt to kill the condition. If you have black salve that you want to get rid of, it's important to carefully read the ingredient list and dispose of it properly.

Read the list of ingredients in your black salve. While natural black salve only contains herbs and natural oils, some black salves might contain heavy metals or materials considered hazardous waste. Make sure to read the entire label and follow and special disposal instructions listed on your black salve.

Put on a pair of gloves and wrap the black salve in a plastic bag. It's important that you protect your skin, since black salve is corrosive.

Take the black salve to your local hazardous waste disposal center. Contact your city or county department of waste management to find out where your local facilities are. Take the black salve there and explain what it is to the people manning the site. While the salve isn't a harm to the environment unless it has certain properties, it is corrosive and shouldn't be just thrown in the trash where it might affect people who have to dispose of the garbage.

How to Use EDTA Chelation Therapy

EDTA chelation therapy is used by some patients as an alternative for various conditions, including blood circulation problems, heart attack, heavy metal poisoning and hardening of the arteries. The treatment developed initially for treating heavy metal poisoning, yielded an added benefit. The presence of EDTA in the circulatory system strips the calcium present in the plaque along the walls of blood vessels.

Locate a doctor trained in chelation therapy. Many traditional doctors doubt that this technique has any benefit for conditions other than heavy metal processing. Chelation therapy may remove heavy metals that have accumulated in your body. These metals, even in small amounts, can damage your organs.

Take vitamin and mineral supplements while you are on chelation therapy. Since the chelating agent remove metal ions from your body, you should supplement the metals that are essential for proper body function. Calcium and iron are two minerals that require supplementation during this therapy. The chelation agent removes calcium and iron, a process that could lead to osteoporosis and anemia if you don't address it.

Ask your doctor which form of chelation therapy is appropriate for you. Most doctors administer these treatments in their offices, but there are products which make home treatment possible. You can purchase liquid forms of the chelating agent or a tablet that you take orally.

Natural Remedies for Earache & Sore Throat

Everyone has suffered from a sore throat or an earache. These two often occur together, and it becomes painful because your throat feels like it is on fire, it becomes hard to swallow and your ears feel like they are popping. You want quick relief so that you can rest comfortably. Check your cabinets and your refrigerator for some natural remedies to help you to feel better.

Garlic can be a good antiseptic and has antiviral and antifungal tendencies, which helps in curing both sore throats and earaches. For a sore throat, it is recommended to consume about two cloves worth of garlic; you can chop it into your favorite dish or soup, or combine it into a preferred drink. For an earache, it is recommended to combine half a clove of garlic with sesame oil to concoct a heated mixture. Use this mixture by dripping a little in each of your ears and letting it settle for 10 minutes per ear. This should provide some relief within a few days.

Both sore throats and earaches may benefit from some form of massage. For a sore throat, you may want to combine some essential oils, like thyme or sandalwood, to 1 tbsp. of olive oil. Massage the outside of your neck with this mixture, then cover your neck with a scarf to keep the oils in. For an earache, moisten a towel with hot water and wrap it around your head to deliver moist heat to your ears and some comfort and relief.

Hot Liquids

Drink hot water or tea with honey and lemon in it to soothe a sore throat. This combination helps reduce the irritation and throat tickle.

Gargling can speed up the process of healing your sore throat. You can try several variations, depending on which one works best for you. If you can tolerate spice, the cayenne pepper gargle works great because it dulls the pain and has antiviral tendencies. Add 5 dashes of cayenne pepper to 1 cup warm water and gargle every 15 minutes. However, if that's not your type, there is also the acidic gargle, which uses 2 tsp. of apple cider vinegar and 1 cup warm water, and often provides prompt relief. The standard salty gargle uses 1 tsp. sea salt and 1 cup warm water; this helps to ease inflammation.

Ginger can provide excellent pain relief. Sometimes distributing some juice from the ginger root into each ear will help ease the pain. Drinking ginger tea will also lessen the pain of a sore throat.

How Jewelry Making Can Help Your Health

How Jewelry Making Can Help Your Health

Jewelry making is a wonderful activity for people of any age. Stringing beads can relieve stress in burned-out professionals, and it can strengthen agility in seniors' hands. Little is needed, just some string, beads and lots of creativity. You might gain self confidence, stimulate a bored mind and socialize with people you would not otherwise meet.

Lowered Stress Levels

Jewelry making is therapeutic. It eases the mind of stress and distracts the individual with a chain reaction of brain stimulants that can even calm down children who suffer from ADD (attention deficit disorder) or ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Ana Bosch, a seed bead jewelry designer from San Antonio, Texas, says that stringing beads and designing jewelry is a great stress reliever and gives a sense of serenity.

Increased Brain Stimulation

Maintaining brain function is important, especially as a person grows older. Activities that maintain proper brain stimulation, such as jewelry making, have been shown to lower the risk of cognitive impairment in seniors. This study, which was part of a Rush Memory and Aging Project conducted in Chicago, showed that activities designed to stimulate brain function also slowed cognitive function decline, which is the cause of disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Improved Social Skills

While being an independent worker can be beneficial, group efforts can help build social skills that lead to increased confidence. An individual who engages in group activities learns how to relate to others and form a bond that in many cases lasts long after the activity ends. Jewelry classes are effective in getting people together to express themselves in a creative way while engaging in conversation and helping each other to push the creative threshold. It also brings people together in a common goal: to create a wonderful piece of art. A senior man in an art making group study in Brooklyn said jewelry making saved his marriage. A woman in that same study said it was the first time she had viewed herself as an artist and not just a worker.

Improved Creativity

Making jewelry is a hands-on activity that calls for as much creativity as it does physical ability. Making a piece of jewelry includes first deciding on what to make and then creating a design from such things as metal and beads. The more a person creates jewelry, the more creative they become in making new pieces. Also, making jewelry challenges the mind to make more difficult pieces from different materials. For example, it is very common for a person to start stringing beads on nylon or tiger tail and end up with more complex metal forged jewelry. The creative process evolves, and so does the crafter.

Improved Physical Ability

Jewelry making is a great tool for physical therapy in patients with hand injuries or disorders such as carpel tunnel syndrome. While seniors may not be able to make jewelry with fine threads or small beads, they should be able to use thicker thread and larger beads. Using their hands can help keep their fingers agile. Jewelry making is not only therapeutic for seniors, it can help develop grandchildren's hand strength and dexterity.

Home Remedies for Gallstones

The gallbladder stores bile, a fluid produced by the liver. It secretes this substance to aid in fat digestion. A series of tubes called bile ducts connect the gallbladder to the liver and small intestines. Gallstones are hard deposits of either cholesterol or calcium salts that block these bile ducts. Women are more likely to have gallstones; age and obesity are factors, as well. Many people have gallstones that produce no symptoms, while others are prone to gallstone attacks that can be quite painful. There are many natural remedies that help prevent and treat gallstones.

Herbal Treatments

Herbs and pharmaceutical agents are assigned suggested doses based on one of their most important pharmacological properties, therapeutic range. Therapeutic range is the smallest dose that provides any medicinal benefit to the largest dose that is safe for consumption. Herbs are generally nontoxic and serious complications or overdose is unlikely. Stick to suggested amounts, as taking more is not likely to produce additional benefit, and can potentially cause negative side effects.

Herbal treatments for gallstones fall into two categories. There are treatments that can be used during an acute attack to ease symptoms. There are also treatments that should be used on a regular basis to alleviate gallbladder irritation and prevent the formation of stones.

Peppermint should be used during active attacks to relieve bile-duct spasms. Take 200 mg three times daily. Prickly ash plaster also relieves pain and bile duct spasms during an acute attack. Make a plaster by mixing the herb with warm water. Put this paste in a cloth pouch, or between two layers of cloth, and apply to the skin. Prickly ash plaster can be purchased from a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner, or from a Chinese herbal shop under the name tian he gu tong. Apply as needed.

The following herbs should not be used during an acute attack. Alfalfa tablets clean the liver and supply necessary vitamins and minerals. Take 1,000 mg with warm water twice a day to prevent gallstones. Boldo tea increases bile production and flushes small gallstones out of bile ducts. Drink 1 cup three times a day. Gentian bitters reduce your appetite and stimulate bile production. Take as directed on the label. Greater celandine also stimulates bile production and relieves spasms. Take 15 to 30 drops of tincture with cup of water three times a day. Milk thistle reduces the amount of cholesterol in the bile. Take 600 mg every day. Soy lechitin lowers cholesterol production in the liver. Take 2,000 mg in capsule form daily. Turmeric inhibits the formation of cholesterol crystals. Take 125 mg three times a day.

Other Considerations

Constipation can lead to the formation of gallstones. Always treat this condition to reduce your risk of gallstones. Rapid weight loss and low calorie diets also increase the likelihood of this condition. A 1986 study published in the Annals of Allergy found that food allergies can contribute to gallbladder irritation. When subjects identified and eliminated offending foods, they experienced complete relief from gallbladder pain.

Alternative Treatment for Essential Tremor

Essential tremor is a mystery. A type of involuntary shaking movement in which no cause can be identified, it differs from tremors that are symptoms of diseases such as Parkinson's and others. Essential tremor involves the hands and head, along with the voice in many cases. Diagnosis through a process of elimination is the first step toward appropriate treatment.

Obviously a doctor can't give you a blood test to determine whether you are suffering from essential tremor, but the test is useful in ruling out other serious conditions that may be responsible for your tremors or shaking.

Ruling out other causes is the diagnostic tool for essential tremor. Neurological exams will check your reflexes and responses to sensations. Blood tests rule out conditions such as thyroid disease that cause tremors.

Make an appointment with your doctor to determine the cause of your tremors and the best treatment approach for your condition.

Lifestyle Changes

The doctor may prescribe medications to treat essential tremor, such as beta blockers and antiseizure drugs. You can also minimize your tremors by making some dietary and lifestyle changes. Avoid caffeine and alcohol. Eliminating caffeine may not stop the tremors, but foods and beverages that have caffeine will make the tremors worse.

Relaxation techniques may help too. Again, stress reduction is not a cure for essential tremor, but too much stress can make the symptoms worse. Get plenty of rest and avoid becoming fatigued.

Use these lifestyle changes alongside traditional medical treatments or alternative treatments for essential tremor. Do everything possible to eliminate things that make your symptoms worse.

Alternative Treatments

Many patients with essential tremor turn to alternative treatments when traditional medicine fails to curb the tremors. Treatments such as acupuncture and hypnosis have not been studied enough to determine whether they are effective.

Some patients have found relief from tremors through alternative treatments, but discuss these methods with your doctor first.

Some professional acupuncturists and hypnotists will attempt to treat your condition. Biofeedback and massage may also be effective. Experiment with different methods to find the right one for your condition.

Natural Hormone Therapy for Menopause

Menopause is the time in a woman's life when her ovaries stop functioning. The bodily changes associated with menopause are part of a woman's natural aging process. Menopause is determined by the absence of a menstrual cycle for at least 12 months. The average age of onset is 52, but menopause can happen at any time between the ages of 35 and 60.

What Is a Natural Hormone?

Natural hormones are considered to be identical to hormones produced in our bodies. Their chemical makeup and function mimic human hormones. They interact with cell receptors and other hormones in a noncompetitive manner. Natural hormones supplement and balance the body's own hormones.

What Is Natural Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Natural hormone replacement therapy, or NHRT, utilizes substances derived from plants to treat hormone imbalances. They are composed of customized formulas containing chemically identical hormones. There are two types of marketed therapies. One is an FDA-approved formula that requires a prescription. The other is mixed based on individual preference and is not FDA approved.

What Types of Substances Are Used in Natural Hormone Therapy?

Prescription-strength natural hormones are made from stimasterol, which is taken from soybeans. It is then chemically altered to represent progesterone or estrogen. These compounds are often micronized for use in NHRT. Over-the-counter progesterone is extracted from diosgeniun, which is taken from the giant Mexican yam. Other derivatives include estradiol and micronized testosterone.

What Are the Benefits of Natural Hormone Therapy?

Natural hormone replacement therapy supports hormonal balances during and after the onset of menopause. Menopausal symptoms will usually subside any time from a few months to several years after onset without treatment. Natural hormone replacement therapy has helped to alleviate symptoms after one to three months of use.

How Does Gripe Water Work?

How Does Gripe Water Work?

What is Gripe Water?

Gripe water is a liquid home treatment to soothe fussy babies. The ingredients of gripe water can greatly differ from manufacturer to manufacturer, but some of the common ingredients in traditional gripe water include alcohol, sugar, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and simethicone. There are now all-natural homeopathic versions of gripe water available that contain blends of herbs like chamomile, fennel, ginger and aloe, in addition to peppermint and vegetable charcoal.

What is Gripe Water Used For?

A fussy baby before being treated with gripe water

Gripe water is used to treat colicky babies (babies who cry for long periods of time with no detectable reason). It is also used to treat babies with gas, reflux or other digestive discomforts.

How Does Gripe Water Work?

A calm baby after being treated with gripe water

Active ingredients are chosen for their calming properties on the digestive track. Babies are born with an immature digestive system, so at first some babies cannot properly digest proteins found in formula and in breast milk, resulting in excess gas in the digestive track. Gas also gets into babies' systems as they suck on the breast or bottle, or if breastfeeding mothers eat gas-causing food like broccoli or cauliflower. Although burping a baby can help to eliminate gas, gas can sometimes stay trapped in a baby's digestive track, causing bloating, discomfort or pain. The active ingredients in gripe water are thought to absorb excess gas, settle the acid in the stomach and relax the digestive track, allowing gas to pass out easily.

Natural Cures for Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is heel and foot pain caused by inflammation--the plantar fascia is the tissue on the bottom part of the foot that attaches the toes to the heel bone. Victims generally experience intense burning pain or stabbing sensations that usually feel worse upon waking as the fascia contracts overnight. There are several natural cures associated with plantar fasciitis.

Home Remedies

Some home remedies for plantar fasciitis include losing weight to lessen heel strain, stretching the heels before rising in the morning; avoiding running, walking upstairs or walking barefoot; wearing comfortable, cushioned and supportive shoes; taking breaks when standing for long periods of time and applying ice in case of pain.

RICE Treatment

One common natural treatment for plantar fasciitis is RICE treatment. RICE stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation. This natural remedy helps to cure milder forms of the condition with a lot of relaxation and not putting a lot of stress or strain on the heels.

Stretching Exercises

Stretching the calf muscles after rising is a wonderful way to help eliminate plantar fasciitis. Stretching should also be done throughout the day. To do this, lean against the wall with the foot firmly planted on the ground to stretch the plantar fascia. This will help reduce tension on the foot while walking or running.

Night Splints

Night splints are a good natural treatment option for healing plantar fasciitis. Night splints gently flex both the toes and foot as you sleep, so you don't wake up to burning, stabbing chronic pain.

Heel Cradles

Heel cradles (also called heel cups) are also beneficial as a natural means of caring for plantar fasciitis. These devices contain gel to cushion the heel and absorb shock. They can easily fit into any type of footwear.

How to Get Rid of Skin Warts

Warts are an ugly, embarrassing nuisance that can grow anywhere on your body. Warts come from viruses known as human papillomavirus, or HPV. There are more than 80 types of HPV. Warts can be spread by scratching and picking at them, and through contact with contaminated razors or towels. Warts are transmitted when they come in direct contact with broken or cracked skin, and may take from two to nine months to show. Common, flat, filiform, periungal, and plantar warts are the five types of nongenital skin warts. Each type can respond differently to different treatments.

Soak the wart in warm water to soften the skin. This can be done while taking a bath, if desired.

Roughen up the top layer of skin on the wart using a new emery board or pumice stone. Make sure the skin that comes from the wart does not contaminate the surfaces around where you are working. This skin contains live viruses.

Wrap the bits of skin that came from the wart in tissue and dispose of them in the trash. Put the emory board or pumice stone in a plastic bag. Do not use these for anything but the wart.

Coat the skin surrounding the wart with a thin layer of petroleum jelly. Do not coat any part of the wart while doing this.

Separate a small piece of a cotton ball, just large enough to cover the wart. Wet the piece of cotton ball with the apple cider vinegar.

Cover the wart with the saturated cotton. Tape the cotton in place over the wart, using the waterproof medical tape to cover it. Leave it covered with the vinegar-soaked cotton for at eight to 12 hours, or overnight.

Uncover the wart and leave it exposed to the air for the next 12 hours.

Repeat these steps each day until the wart is gone. The wart will become discolored and form a scab. It will take from threes days to three weeks for the wart to disappear.

How to Make a Bath Treatment for a Circulation Problem

This gentle bath soak treatment helps to naturally improve your circulation problem. It works especially well for those that have circulation problems in their legs, arms, feet and hands. This circulation treatment can be used a couple of times per week, but with those with more severe circulation problems it can be used more regularly.

Pour the cup of celtic sea salt under the running water of your bath. I suggest using water that is warm, but not hot. Hot water can weaken the essential oils that are used in this remedy, therefor weakening their effect.

Once the water is done running, drop in the cypress oil, grapefruit oil and the nutmeg oil. Use your foot to stir the oils throughout the bath water.

Soak in the bath mixture for about 30 minutes or so. Don't rinse the mixture off when you're done, just dry the skin gently. This helps the oils to absorb in through the skin.

How to Naturally Treat Osteoporosis

There are no magical ways to cure Osteoporosis but there are ways to naturally treat Osteoporosis and help to slow its progress, prevent future damage, and even reverse some of the damage of Osteoporosis.

Take around 20 mg of Silicon daily. Silicon is a mineral that is an important part of collagen and calcification, both which are very important with bone health and Osteoporosis.

Take around between 15 and 25 mg of Manganese daily. Manganese works by helping with bone calcification which helps to reverse Osteoporosis and prevent future damage from Osteoporosis.

Take around 1,000 IU of Vitamin D daily. Vitamin D improves calcium absorption and also helps to reduce the excretion of calcium in urine. Vitamin D is one of the most popular natural remedies recommended by doctors.

Take 3 mg of Boron daily. Boron is a mineral that helps to activate Vitamin D and also helps to support estrogen levels for healthy calcium metabolism.

How to Get Rid of Dry Scalp Naturally

Dry scalp usually occurs when the oils produced by the sebaceous glands are depleted. It also can be caused by chronic dandruff or prolonged exposure to cold weather. Dry scalp is uncomfortable as it often causes excessive itching that might subsequently lead to irritation. To cure this dryness and discomfort, the area must be hydrated with natural oils such as olive oil that are massaged deeply into the scalp.

Combine a teaspoon of olive oil and a teaspoon of avocado oil in a small mixing bowl and stir to blend the oils.

Apply a few drops of the oil mixture onto your fingertips.

Massage the oils into your scalp for 30 to 60 seconds.

Put on a shower cap and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes to allow the oils to absorb deeply into your scalp.

Remove the shower cap and gently rinse out the oils with warm water.

Tabacum Use as an Aid to Stop Smoking

Tabacum Use as an Aid to Stop Smoking

People might find it surprising that the cure for smoking cigarettes could come from the same product that is used to produce the addictive substance. Such is the case with tabacum being used as a tool to help smokers quit. Tabacum can targets the symptoms associated with quitting or withdrawal from nicotine.

Tabacum is a cultivated tobacco plant that is native to countries with tropical climate including subtropical America. The nicotine found in tabacum may be used as expectorant or diuretic, and has many other functions including homeopathy. Tobacum is the same base used for most cigarettes marketed today.

Homeopathy is a form of treatment that uses elements that produce like symptoms to cure diseases. Samuel Hahnemann introduced homeopathy in the late 18th century on the premise that substances that create the same symptoms as the disease can be administered as a cure. This same principle applies to the use of tabacum as a remedy for nicotine addiction.

Most smokers want to quit, but the withdrawal process pose a challenging problem to overcome addiction. It involves the occurrence of symptoms such as sweating, intestinal disorders, headaches, cold symptoms and respiratory problems. The mental symptoms prove to be more difficult such as confusion, insomnia, irritability, dependency, depression and anxiety. According to Dr. Henry Clay Allen (1836-1909), narcotic effects are generally cured by agents with the same symptoms.

Although effects of nicotine vary by individual, Dr. Allen believes that potentized tabacum is the remedy against withdrawal syndromes or nicotine poisoning. Tabacum and its relative plants are effective in alleviating headaches, nausea, vomiting, palpitation, and gastric complications after excessive use. Tabacum can cause aversion to nicotine that could last for months or even a lifetime.

Dr. H.N. Guernsey recounts an incident which happened decades ago, when a man from Washington called upon his services due to extreme weakness, thinness, loss of sleep, and appetite. He also appeared to be depressed. He discovered that the man smoked tobacco for many years and recently cut down on his intake, apparently the cut down was drastic and he was experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms. After a few doses of potentized tabacum, the man regained his health.

A common misconception is that the use of tabacum alone aids to cure nicotine addiction and will make the craving disappear. A combination of homeopathic components can help to combat the "craving" or withdrawal symptoms and encourage long-term abstinence from smoking or other nicotine products.

Do not use homeopathic relievers if pregnant unless supervised by a qualified practitioner.

Mycotoxins Detox Treatment

Mycotoxins is a term typically used to describe the toxic chemicals that are produced by the fungi that are often found colonizing crops. As there are many different species of fungi, so too are there many different mycotoxins. Different species of fungi can either produce very similar or vastly different mycotoxins. Concentrated levels of mycotoxin in the air will be found near fungal colonies. The severity of the mycotoxin to a living organism is the type of organism infected, its susceptibility to the mycotoxin, its metabolism and its defense mechanisms.

Health Effects

The poisoning associated with prolonged exposure to mycotoxins is mycotoxicoses. The inhalation, ingestion or skin contact with mycotoxins can lead to many adverse health effects, ranging from initial immune-system-suppression and body response to toxins to a long-term carcinogenic effect.

The symptoms that an individual displays from mycotoxicoses will depend on the type of mycotoxin, the concentration of the mycotoxin exposed to, the length of exposure and the individual's personal characteristics like their age and previous health problems. Initial health problems such as vitamin and caloric deficiency, alcohol abuse and infectious diseases can compound the effect of the mycotoxins. Effects of mycotoxins include the inhibition of protein synthesis, inhibition of the ability of lungs to clear particulates out and increased sensitivity to bacteria.

Herbal Cleanse

There are many different herbs that you can incorporate into your diet to help flush mycotoxins out of your system. The simplest addition to your food is garlic which is not only easy to find but also simple to incorporate into your existing recipes. Garlic is a natural antifungal and helps kill mycotoxins in your body.

Other herbs that you could consider adding to your food include cascara sagrada, psyllium, goldenseal, licorice root and dandelion. Although these herbs may sound exotic and foreign, this mycotoxin detox could be a great time to try out new recipes. Also, because the toxins will be flushed from your body through your bowels, be prepared to be going to the bathroom a lot and don't schedule to go out soon after eating.

During the mycotoxin detox treatment, you should be sure to drink lots of water and other fluids. This not only helps flush the toxins from your body, but it also helps to rehydrate you. The rehydration is important because you will be losing a lot of body fluid in the detoxification process.

Although the herbs help loosen the mycotoxins from your system, it is really the water that helps flush them out and get rid of them once and for all. Although you should definitely be drinking more than the recommended eight cups a day, also don't over hydrate yourself because this can lead to you feeling bloated and sick. Drinking non-caffeinated tea can also help you drink more water by breaking up the monotony.

Frankincense to Remove Skin Warts & Moles

Frankincense to Remove Skin Warts & Moles

Derived from the gummy resin of the frankincense tree, frankincense has been used for ages as a common healing medicine. Today, it is often used to diminish warts and moles.

According to, warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes keratin, a hard protein in the epidermis, to grow too fast. While warts are generally skin-colored, moles are dark and sometimes quite big. Moles appear when skin cells grow in a cluster rather than evenly throughout the skin.

With its strong antiseptic and antimicrobial properties, frankincense is very effective because it actually repairs the skin, soaking deeper into the skin than typical over-the-counter treatments. Because of its incredible abilities to repair the skin, alternative medicine doctors often prescribe frankincense for acne, cysts, stretch marks, varicose veins and wrinkles as well.

Frankincense oil should be applied to a wart or mole (after the area of skin has been cleaned and dried) and then covered with a bandage that will help retain the frankincense's moisture. According to Everything Essential, frankincense should be applied two to three times a day until the wart or mole disappears and then continued for one to two weeks after to ensure its completely gone.

In ancient times, frankincense was often taken internally, but this is no longer recommended. In fact, ingesting frankincense could potentially be very dangerous.

Frankincense oil can be added to a warm bath as an all-over treatment for the skin. Not only will your skin benefit, but since frankincense is one of the most common oils used in aromatherapy because of its calming scent.

About Foot Soaks

If you spend a lot of time standing at your job, your feet can really hurt. You might also get sore feet from a long hike in the woods or raking leaves all day. Sore feet can make you feel miserable, but a relaxing foot soak can relieve aching feet and provide other benefits, as well.

Soaking your feet can improve circulation and relax sore muscles up through your legs. Foot soaks also are great for skin, which can become dry due to circulation issues or continuous perspiration and drying. Foot soaks can treat calluses and corns, and also soften toenails for easy trimming.

You can buy whirlpool-style foot soak tubs at department stores, drug stores and discount stores. A simple wide and shallow bucket will also do the trick, as long as you can easily fit both feet inside, and the water reaches your ankles without spilling.

The most basic foot soak begins with a bucket of water hot enough for your feet to feel comfortable, and 1/2 cup of Epsom salts. Sea salt works, as well. Add 1/4 cup of baking soda if you prefer. These ingredients, along with the hot water, ease sore feet and also draw toxins from the skin. You also can add a couple drops of your favorite essential oil to make it an even more pleasant experience. Foot soaks should last at least 20 minutes. Afterward, brush your feet with a loofah sponge or a gentle brush, and then rub lotion into them.

Foot soaks are effective at treating calluses and corns. Calluses are areas of hardened, thick skin that build up over time because of repeated contact and friction, and typically occur on the heels and balls of feet. Corns are painful calluses that occur on small specific areas, usually toes. They are typically caused by shoes that create too much pressure and friction, as in pointed toes. Frequent foot soaks, especially daily ones, can treat these conditions. After the soak, use a pumice stone to remove the calluses and corns, and apply lotion to your feet, particularly to these problem areas.

If you have foot pain that does not subside, check with your physician. People with diabetes are advised to ask their doctors about foot soaks before beginning because of their circulation issues.

The Best Home Cures for Acid Reflux

Acid reflux is a condition that occurs when a highly acidic liquid from the small intestine and stomach are thrown back up into the esophagus. This, in turn, causes regurgitation, vomiting, nausea, belching and chronic heartburn. If you do not receive proper care for this condition, you may develop sores of the esophagus, ulcers and precancerous cells in the esophagus. Fortunately, there are many helpful home cures that you can depend on to remedy acid reflux effectively.

Pineapple, a fruit commonly found in fruit salads, is very beneficial for acid reflux. It is filled with bromelain, which is a proteolytic enzyme found naturally in the digestive tract. Not only does this enzyme help to digest the foods you eat, but it also decreases the swelling in the esophagus. This can help heal your body from the acids that have been eating away at it.

Additional fruits that can assist you are papaya and apples. Indulging in a small amount of either for a dessert after every meal can keep acid reflux symptoms at bay. The natural fibers and sugars help to settle your stomach.

Cinnamon is a wonderful antiseptic. It has also been found to neutralize acids in the stomach. For quicker relief, try it on a cracker or bread, something that will absorb some of the acid on contact. If your acid reflux has been particularly bad, the antiseptic properties may help keep you from having further issues.

Good greens also help; so eat Romaine lettuce instead of iceberg. Romaine lettuce is high in alkali, which has been proven multiple times to neutralize the body's acids.

Water and Milk

Also, plain water and/or milk help. With the water, make sure that it's not too heavy in chemicals; ideally, drink bottled water or water that's been filtered. It will dilute your stomach acids and help to flush the food out of your stomach. With milk, feel free to drink skim, low-fat or regular, whichever you like best.

Fennel or Chamomile Tea

Two other good drinks are fennel or chamomile tea. Both are very soothing on the stomach. Make sure the tea is not too hot, and don't gulp it down -- just sip it. Also, go easy on the sugar; too much can irritate your stomach.

Choosing the Right Home Cure for You

Find the one home cure to try that you feel you will be able to stick with that doesn't interfere with any current medications and that is easily available for purchase. Make sure that you match the symptoms to the cure. If you need one that heals, look to pineapple. If you are worried about neutralizing acids only, maybe a nice Romaine salad is better for you.

Natural Sleep Aids

Difficulty sleeping is a relatively common problem, affecting 20 to 40 percent of adults. Inadequate sleep can affect your health and impair immune system function. Prescription and over-the-counter medications can be effective, but may have significant side effects. Natural, herbal teas and supplements can offer safe and effective alternatives.

No TV in Bed

Remove the television from your bedroom. Watching television or reviewing work-related documents from your bed makes you more alert and can interfere with sleep.

Dietary Supplements

Try melatonin to help prevent jet lag or ease insomnia. Melatonin supplements can help to balance the natural secretion of melatonin in the body, a hormone in the brain that helps to regulate sleep patterns.

Drink a warm cup of herbal tea made from Chamomile, Valerian root, Passionflower or Kava Kava to help you to fall asleep. These herbs have been used in folk medicine for centuries.

Before using any natural sleep aid, talk to your doctor about potential interactions with any medications you are taking, including antidepressants.

If you continue to have trouble sleeping or are relying on any type of sleep aids more and more, contact your doctor. You may have another condition that is causing your sleep disturbances, such as anxiety, depression or restless leg syndrome.

What Are the Benefits of Flaxseed Oil on Dry Skin?

What Are the Benefits of Flaxseed Oil on Dry Skin?

Dry skin has become a lucrative target of the beauty industry. Each new commercial boasts a different ingredient that can alleviate the uncomfortable condition. However, one dry skin cure exists that can also help with cholesterol levels---flaxseed oil.

Dry Skin Characteristics

Dry skin occurs when the natural oils in the skin dissipates, leaving a dry and itchy patch of skin. Factors such as the sun, wind, cold medications and skin conditions like psoriasis can cause the dry skin.

Flaxseed Oil Description

Flax seeds are harvested from the flax plant, Linum usitatissimum, which grows in Canada and the northwestern United States. The oil extracted from these seeds can be ingested in liquid or capsule form, or applied topically.

Flaxseed Oil Properties

Flaxseed and their oil contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to act as a skin lubricant. Flaxseed oil is found in liquid form or as an ingredient in lotions.

For dry skin, flaxseed oil liquid alone will suffice, but the lotions work as well. However, the benefits of the supplement are best realized when the oil is ingested and absorbed into the body. For example, ingesting the oil in liquid or pill form is the only way to reap the cholesterol-lowering benefits.

Head Lice Treatments Using Olive Oil

Head Lice Treatments Using Olive Oil

Head lice are very small insects that live on human scalps and hair. There are many ways you can treat head lice, though some are more effective than others. The use of olive oil is one such treatment.

An infestation of head lice causes your scalp to itch and excessive scratching is usually the first sign. Head lice also lay eggs that are white in color, which will stand out against dark hair.

Olive oil treatments work well, but the oil must remain on the hair and scalp for at least 2 hours. Head lice can survive if they are only in the olive oil for 1 hour, but will suffocate after approximately 2 hours. The treatment may need to be repeated after a week has passed, to suffocate the lice that may have hatched.

Avoid contact with other people's head accessories, such as hats and hair brushes, to prevent an infestation.

Olive oil treatments for head lice may cause the scalp to become irritated. Do not use such treatments if you have sensitive skin.

Fun Fact

Sesame seeds are similar in size to head lice.

How to Reduce Excess Acidity in the Body

How to Reduce Excess Acidity in the Body

Proper pH balance is vital to good health. Ideally, the body's pH (potential of hydrogen) should be 7.43, slightly more alkaline than water's neutral 7.0. Lower pH indicates excess acid, or "acidosis." A pH above 7.43 signals an alkaline condition, or alkalosis.
Both acidosis and alkalosis can lead to myriad health problems, including weakened immunity. Acidosis, which is the more common condition, is especially problematic, because it interferes with optimal functioning in cells throughout the body, particularly white blood cell production. Cells that are produced are of inferior quality, making it easy for infections to develop. Correcting acidosis benefits the entire body.

Determine your pH by testing the second urine of the day with litmus paper by following the directions on the product. Litmus paper is available at most pharmacies and medical supply companies.

If the test shows excessively high acid levels indicating acidosis, reduce intake of acidic foods, including sugar, coffee, alcohol and most proteins, except almonds, milk, butter and soft cheeses. Focus primarily on eating raw fruits and vegetables. Almost all fruits and vegetables, except for tomatoes, cranberries and blueberries, are alkalizing.

Use buffered vitamin C supplements to alleviate the effects of acidosis promoting substances.

Add the minerals calcium, magnesium, potassium and a pH balancing supplement to the daily regimen to reduce acidity and to replenish minerals that may be lost in the body's attempt to balance an overly acidic condition.

Test saliva or urine with litmus paper daily to check pH level. When it reaches a normal range, gradually resume regular eating habits. Retest occasionally and adjust diet to maintain a healthy pH.

About Coleus Forskohlii Root Extract

About Coleus Forskohlii Root Extract

Coleus forskohlii is a perennial member of the mint (Lamiaceae) family. It has a 3,000-year history of medicinal use in Hindu and Ayurvedic traditional medicine, used to treat medical ailments from hypertension, congestive heart failure and respiratory disorders to insomnia, asthma and convulsions. There are clinical reports to support the health benefits of forskolin, the main active ingredient found in coleus forskohlii roots.

Coleus forskohlii is native to the lower elevations of India, although it is also found in subtropical places like Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Swedish naturalist Peter Forskal first discovered the plant, hence the name. The ancient Sanskrit texts referred to it as "Makandi," and it was used to promote heart and lung health.

The plant can grow to a height of 1 to 2 feet. It has teardrop-shaped leaves and produces clusters of pale blue or purple flowers. However, it is the roots that hold the most concentration of forskolin. Harvesting the roots in the fall is ideal, as the concentration of forskolin is most intense.

According to the House of Nutrition, forskolin activates the cell-regulating compound called cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), which is responsible for the proper functioning of a number of hormonal processes in the body. To further explain, cAMP promotes healthy cells and improves blood vessel dilation, inhibits allergic reactions, suppresses cancerous growth and exerts anti-inflammatory properties.

Clinical Results

PubMed has done many studies on the activities of forskolin, and it confirms the ability of cAMP to promote healthy cells. An article published in the January 2000 edition of "Experimental Physiology" revealed that forskolin has bimodal effects on bone growth. When taken in low doses, forskolin can generate bone growth, and when taken in high doses, it has an inhibitive effect.

Practitioners of alternative medicine use coleus forskohlii for many medical conditions. According to the Herbal Resource, coleus forskohlii extract can be used to lower blood pressure, reduce eye pressure associated with glaucoma, act as an antihistamine to relieve asthma, treat skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, induce weight loss and treat cardiovascular diseases. Athletes often use coleus forskohlii supplements to increase energy and recover faster from a workout.

You can take coleus forskohlii in a number of ways: tea, extracts, fluid extracts or as a supplement in the form of capsules or pill. However, it is best to consult a certified physician before taking any coleus forskohlii supplements.

Colloidal Silver's Effect on Psoriasis

Colloidal silver is an alternative remedy that is made from silver particles that are suspended in liquid. According to the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine, "colloidal silver products have been used for a variety of health purposes---although there is no scientific evidence to support their safety or effectiveness."

Psoriasis is a skin disease that causes patches of itchy, scaly red skin to flake on various parts of the body. It can be a very uncomfortable condition. Some individuals may use liquid colloidal silver in the form of soap or a salve or by ingesting it directly to treat psoriasis. This can result in Argyria, which is the permanent discoloration of the skin.

Argyria can be a dangerous side effect of colloidal silver. The FDA says, "Supplements containing silver may cause permanent discoloration of skin and mucous membranes." A famous case of an individual experiencing Argyria is that of Paul Karason. He drank and rubbed liquid colloidal silver on his skin in an attempt to treat his dermatitis. He claims that the product turned his skin a deep shade of blue. "The change was so gradual that I didn't perceive it and other people around me likewise," Karason said in a 2007 article for FOX news. "It wasn't until a friend I hadn't seen in several months came by my parent's place to see me and he asked me 'what did you do?.'" The FDA says, "Argyria is usually permanent. There are no effective non-surgical medical treatments, and surgical procedures have limited effectiveness and are not suitable in all cases."

The National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine says, "Silver has no known function in the body. Claims made about the effectiveness of colloidal silver products for numerous diseases are unsupported scientifically."

According to, "Excessive doses of colloidal silver can cause possibly irreversible serious health problems, including: Seizures and other neurological problems, kidney damage and skin irritation. Colloidal silver products also may interact with medications, including penicillamine, quinolones, tetracycline and thyroxine medications."

There is no evidence that supports the effectiveness or safety of colloidal silver for the treatment of psoriasis. If you suffer from the condition contact a doctor to discuss possible treatment options before self-diagnosing or medicating.
