How to Use Living Bentonite Clay

Living Bentonite clay is topically used in facials and body wraps. The clay cleanses skin by balancing the body's pH levels. Research by geochemist Lynda Williams and microbiologist Shelley Haydel at Arizona State University show three minerals in certain clays target antibiotic-resistant E. coli, as well as other bacteria. Treat skin maladies by applying wet clay topically to the skin. Purchase clay in dry form to easily mix it yourself. Bentonite is a swelling clay so when mixed with water it swells open like a porous sponge. From here the toxins are drawn into the sponge through electrical attraction and once there, they are bound.

Preparing to Use

Mix 1 part dry powder clay to 3 parts water. A good quality Bentonite should be a grey/cream color.

Cover and shake vigorously until creamy and smooth.

Adjust consistency by adding more powdered clay or water.

    Open cover for 10-15 minutes

Cover and keep in a cool dry place.

How to Be a Positive Person

How to Be a Positive Person

Walking around with a rain cloud above your head doesn't just affect your mood. Pessimistic and negative thoughts also negatively impact your health, points out the Mayo Clinic. Practicing positive thinking on a regular basis strengthens your immune system, lowers your risk of heart disease and even increases your life span. Harnessing the power of positivity to improve your health and your happiness doesn't require immediate solutions to your life problems. You can start with a few happiness-inducing positive thinking exercises.

Be a Thought Detective

If you're prone to pessimism, you may not even realize how many negative thoughts you have throughout the day. Take one day to note every instance of worry and every negative thought or emotion. Pay attention to how long you allow yourself to dwell on the bad. Your thoughts, not the situations attached to them, determine your positivity.

Seek and Destroy

Reversing a streak of pessimism takes a little mental fine-tuning. One strategy involves neutralizing your negative thoughts with positive thoughts. Each time you have a negative thought, recognize it, stop dwelling on it and replace it with a positive thought. For example, if you're worrying about one bad day at work, stop yourself and think about all the productive, enjoyable days you've had instead. With enough practice, seeing the positive instead of the negative will come naturally.

Start Your Own Internal Cheering Section

Negative thinking often comes with a side of self-berating. Constant criticism, name-calling and unkind thoughts toward yourself can hurt just as much as if they came from your friends and family. Take a kind and gentle approach to your own self-criticism. In other words, "Don't say anything to yourself that you wouldn't say to anyone else," advises the Mayo Clinic.

Build an External Cheering Section

Misery loves company. If you find yourself constantly surrounded by negative people, it's easier to fall in step with their pessimistic ways. Instead, surround yourself with positive people who inspire you to improve your outlook on life. Work together to support and encourage each other -- and to have more fun!

Rev Up Your Gratitude

Practicing gratefulness and focusing on the positive aspects of your life and your personality boost your mood, according to "Live Your Life Well" from Mental Health America. Keep a list or journal of people, experiences and thoughts that make you happy. Tell the people in your life how much you appreciate them. Take stock of the good in your life on a daily basis.

Dwell on Joy

Mental Health America recommends wallowing -- but not in despair. Instead, spend extra time in your happy moments. Whenever something makes you smile or brings back a happy memory, linger on those thoughts and feelings in the same way that you used to dwell on negative thoughts or worries. Seek out things that make you happy and relish every second of your joy.

Cures for Scalp Psoriasis

Psoriasis of the scalp is a condition that clears up by itself with time. For some people, however, waiting it out is not an option. Aside from commercial products that are available, there are also a number of natural cures that may be used to treat this condition.

The Psoriasis Foundation reports that vinegar has been successfully used in the treatment of scalp psoriasis. It has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that target infection and inflammation of psoriasis lesions.

Coal Tar

The National Psoriasis Foundation recommends tar---in particular coal tar---as a cure for scalp psoriasis. Tar helps hinder the rapid proliferation of scalp skin cells, while reducing the itching and inflammation associated with this condition.

According to Dr. Laurence Miller, who is a member of the Medical Advisory Board of National Psoriasis Foundation, exposure to sunshine helps to clear scalp psoriasis. He recommends the use of suncreen to minimize cancer risk.

According to The Herb Companion, calendula essential oil contains active ingredients that help treat scalp psoriasis and relieve its symptoms.

Buttermilk, applied directly to the scalp, has traditionally been used as a soothing treatment of scalp psoriasis.

Medical Massage Therapy Training

Medical Massage Therapy Training

Training for medical message therapy varies from state to state and institution to institution. Training is generally offered by public community or technical colleges, or by private institutions, many of them specializing in massage therapy. Programs frequently provide full- and part-time instruction, and teach various accepted massage techniques and practices, with placement assistance included after the student completes the program.

Medical Massage Courses

Medical massage therapy training begins with anatomy and physiology.
Medical massage therapy training begins with anatomy and physiology.

The medical massage therapists education and training should begin with a thorough understanding of the human bodys anatomy and physiology. Additionally, courses should cover extensively the pathologies a therapist is likely to encounter in medical massage. For example, the Blue Heron Academy of the Healing Arts and Sciences in Grand Rapids, Michigan, teaches students assorted musculoskeletal conditions body part by body part, joint by joint, condition by condition. Beyond physical and physiological considerations, a key component of all medical massage training is ethics standards and behavior.

Hands-On Training

Hands-on experience is key to medical massage therapist training.
Hands-on experience is key to medical massage therapist training.

Hands-on, clinical experience is essential in medical massage therapist training. The clinical process focuses on four key areas: reducing inflammation, restoring soft tissue to its normal condition, returning the body part to its normal range of motion and creating a general upturn in the patients physical condition while lowering the patients discomfort. Clinical training should encompass both clinical practices and patient evaluation. The Blue Heron Academy begins students working with patients with six visits in three weeks, which allows the student time to both treat the condition and evaluate the patients recovery. Because the therapist is treating a condition based on a medical prescription, patient sessions are shorter, typically half an hour.

Adjunct Training

After the medical massage therapy student has mastered the coursework and the clinical experiences, she is ready to train in adjunct therapies. These include the application of hot packs and cold packs; cold, low-level soft-tissue lasers; electrotherapy; vibration or percussion therapy; and infrared lamps. Learning these therapies broadens the patients treatment options and speeds recovery while expanding the therapists capabilities and practice.

Certification from the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork is recognized by 38 states and the District of Columbia. Many states demand that a massage therapist have at minimum 500 hours of training and education earned at a fully accredited school or institution. By passing the NCBTMB exam, the therapist is certified to have met those conditions and is confirmed to be qualified and knowledgeable in medical massage therapy, and has pledged to uphold ethical standards and practices.

Licensing requirements for medical massage therapists vary widely. For example, the State Medical Board of Ohio, which requires a therapist be licensed and pass a criminal background check, created a Massage Therapy Advisory Committee to evaluate and advise issues pertaining to massage therapy. Ohio requires therapists to renew their license every two years. By contrast, Wyoming does not require the NCBTMB exam and does not have licensing or certification requirements. A new medical massage therapist should check both state and municipal requirements for licensing and certification before opening a practice.

What Is an Ionic Detox Foot Bath?

Ionic detoxification foot baths are quickly becoming a popular alternative treatment for a range of health concerns. Treatment takes about 30 minutes and can be done two to three times per week. However, there is some debate about whether or not ionic foot baths are effective detoxification treatments.

Ionic detoxification treatment consists of placing the feet in a special foot bath equipped with a metal plate called an array. The array produces a gentle current in the water, which creates millions of negative ions. These negative ions are absorbed into the body through the process of osmosis, and then attach to the positive molecules of foreign toxins in the body. Once the ions attach to the foreign substances, the body releases them through the bottom of the feet.

Ionic detoxification is believed to assist in relieving symptoms of many conditions and diseases including arthritis, fibromyalgia and acidosis, and it supposedly detoxifies the body of metals and pollutants. It is important to note that expectant and nursing mothers, people who have undergone an organ transplant and people with pacemakers should not use an ionic detox foot bath.

The color of the water during and after an ionic detox treatment is believed to indicate which types of toxins are being released from the body. For example, dark green water indicates gallbladder detoxification, yellow indicates kidneys and urinary tract detoxification and black water can indicate the liver detoxifying from metals. Colors can be difficult to read though, because minerals and chlorine in the water used can affect the metal array.

How to Treat Hives With Cream of Tartar

Hives can be brought on by any number of causes. Whether related to allergies, stress or the climate, hives are unattractive and uncomfortable. A paste made with cream of tartar is a natural way to relieve the itching and swelling of hive-infested skin, and vitamin E helps heal and restore the area. Though this treatment works well on everyday outbreaks related to stress or the sun, it is imperative to ensure the hives are not related to a serious allergic reaction. If this is the case, seek medical attention immediately.

Wash the afflicted area with soap and water, and dry with a clean towel.

Put the cream of tartar into a bowl and add warm water a teaspoonful at a time until a thick paste forms. The paste should have the consistency of mashed potatoes.

Apply a dense layer of the paste to the hives. Allow the paste to dry and flake off on its own. If itching persists or worsens, rinse off the paste and seek medical help. The acid in the cream of tartar draws out the itch and cools the area, allowing the hives to heal. The dry paste also serves as a protective barrier, keeping you from scratching the hives.

Rinse skin. Apply vitamin E oil, a few drops at a time, to the affected area and massage the oil into your skin. The vitamin E oil will moisturize and heal your skin, therefore keeping the site from growing dry or infected. If you suspect the hives are the result of poison oak, ivy or sumac, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after this step to avoid spreading the rash.

Side Effects of Knox Gelatin

Side Effects of Knox Gelatin

Knox gelatin is a powder that can be mixed with water or other liquids to created a jelly or gelatinous dessert, side dish, and other foods. It is odorless and flavorless and has no sugar added. Gelatin is most often extracted from collagen from animal bones and tissues and refined into a powder form. While the most popular use of this flavorless powder is to make food, there are a number of Knox gelatin side effects and benefits that have nothing to do with food at all. These range from the most commonly known side effect---helping arthritis patients---to helping plants grow.

Joint Health

Knox gelatin contains amino acids that bodies need to create collagen. Collagen is essential for joint health and some studies, including one by Ball State University in 1998, have concluded that gelatin can help with joint pain, arthritis, or keeping the joints of athletes healthy. Knox markets gelatin for this purpose under the name of NutraJoint, which contains other nutrients for joint health along with gelatin.

Nail and Hair Health

There are those who believe one of the Knox gelatin benefits include better nail and hair health, but there are no studies as of early 2010 that support this. Knox gelatin does contain amino acids used in hair and nail growth, but most people's bodies make enough of these nutrients without supplements.

Plant Health

Some of the most successful Knox gelatin side effects are quite positive, but don't affect humans. These include using gelatin to grow big, healthy plants. Plain Knox gelatin contains nitrogen, which is an essential nutrient for plants, and this finding is backed up by a two-year-long study at the University of Houston. Gelatin is especially good for fertilizing indoor plants as it is clean and nontoxic. To use as a fertilizer, add a packet of gelatin to cup of cold water in a pitcher. Dissolve the gelatin in the water and then fill the entire pitcher slowly with water. Use this to water your plants once a month.

Skin Health

Knox gelatin can be mixed with a variety of other natural substances found in the home, usually in the kitchen, to benefit skin. Mix teaspoon each of corn meal and gelatin and use on a dampened face for an all natural exfoliate. Or try cup lemon juice with cup gelatin as a face mask (avoid the eyes). Due to the natural collagen in Knox gelatin, Knox claims it is good for skin treatments. There are no studies to support this fact solidly, but gelatin also has nothing in it to damage skin or the body.

Things to Do With Sweet Oil

Things to Do With Sweet Oil

Sweet oil is a derivative of olive oil. Also known scientifically as Olea europaea, it is a member of the Oleaceae family. Sweet oil is a fixed oil and is expressed from ripe olives. Pale yellow in coloring, sweet oil may also have a greenish tint. Sweet oil is used in a wide range of applications and has a long history in traditional medical use. As a natural medicine, the oil has been used for a wide range of conditions.

Oral Uses

Historically, sweet oil has been used as a mild laxative for constipation. Sweet oil is also used orally as a natural medicine to treat a wide range of health problems. This includes hypertension, flatulence, migraine headaches, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), gallstones, gall bladder and bile duct inflammation, breast cancer and to boost bacteria in the gut.

Topical Uses

Sweet oil has long been used to treat a variety of ear problems such as pain in the ears, ringing ears -- also known as tinnitus -- and for softening ear wax. Sweet oil is also used topically for lice, to treat minor burns and psoriasis, for wound dressing and to treat stretch marks due to pregnancy. As a softening agent, sweet oil is often used during the winter in place of a commercial moisturizer.

Sunburn Treatment

Sweet oil is used as skin protection form ultraviolet (UV) damage. As an antidote for sunburn pain, sweet oil has been used for at least 200 years, according to the Bliss Plan website. Sweet oil is used to penetrate the skin and help speed up healing.

Furniture Polish

As a furniture polish, the sweet oil to use is usually sold in the cosmetics or pharmacy section of the supermarket or drugstore. The oil is odorless and colorless. To use, mix three parts of sweet oil to one part vinegar. The sweet oil furniture polish should only be used on finished surfaces and not unfinished wood.

Sweet oil is also used in the manufacturing process to make a variety of products. Because of its emollient properties, sweet oil is used to make soaps. Additional uses for sweet oil in the manufacturing process include a setting retardant for dental cements and to manufacture liniments and plasters.

Emergency Eye Pain Relief

Eye pain can have many causes. For the most common--dust, dirt, dry air, and allergens--you can usually find a home remedy that will eliminate the problem or afford you significant relief. For more persist and serious causes of eye pain, a doctor should be consulted as quickly as possible.

Pain Relief

Simply blinking, which stimulates the production of tears, may help. Tears flush out common invaders, such as dirt and dust. If blinking doesn't do it, try using your eyelids to push a foreign object out. Gently grab the eyelashes of your top lid and pull them over the bottom lid. This helps your bottom lashes brush the speck off the inside of your upper lid.

If you're still experiencing discomfort, try using water to flush the foreign object out of your eye. Splash as much water as you can onto your eyes. You could also try artificial tears, which will not only help flush an object out of your eye but also hydrate and refresh your eye once the irritant is gone.

If your eyes are dry and itchy because of allergies, consider using a cold compress to reduce the itch. Place a wet washcloth or towel over your closed eyes. Leave the wet towel on your eyes for up to 20 minutes.

Aromatherapy can help with dry eyes. Valerie Ann Worwood, author of "The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy," recommends placing several drops of tea tree oil in a humidifier. This especially works well in an area with a high-powered air conditioning system, such as your office.

If you have a painful sty on your eye, drain it with a warm compress as soon as you notice it. Put a warm, damp washcloth over your closed eyes for at least five minutes. Continue this four times a day for two weeks, or until the sty is gone.

When to See a Doctor

If you have acute eye pain, it's possible that something has scratched your cornea. Try keeping your eyes shut for half an hour. If your eye still hurts afteward, is red, or has lost vision, call your doctor immediately.

If you're experiencing dry eyes, consult your doctor if your eye remains red after frequent use of artificial tears, your vision changes or if you have pus or discharge coming out of your eye.

Vinegar to Cure Nail Fungus

Vinegar to Cure Nail Fungus

You can treat fungus on the toenails, also called onychomycosis, with medication or home remedies. Some nail fungus is very hard to get rid of. Using vinegar to kill off nail fungus is a popular home remedy treatment.

Toenail fungus usually begins with little spots on the nail, typically white or yellow in color. As the fungus grows, the spot gets larger and the nail may thicken or become brittle. The nail can become dark and even separate from the nail bed.

Nail fungus is common, about 1 in 10 people get fungus on the toenails, according to toenailfungus.org. This type of fungus is usually caused by fungi on the skin, called dermatophytes, or from yeast, which is a microflora that grows in the body. Most cases of nail fungus occur after damage to a nail or from having feet in a warm, moist environment too often.

Apple Cider Vinegar

According to Earthclinic.com, soaking an infected toe in pure apple cider vinegar twice a day for 30 minutes each time should help to get rid of nail fungus. Additionally, saturate a small cloth or paper towel in vinegar and lay it in on the nail as often as possible to help speed up recovery. The length of time to get rid of fungus varies; you may see results quickly or it may take months. Patience is important when trying to get rid of any fungal infections.

Distilled Vinegar

Instead of apple cider vinegar, some people prefer to use distilled, or white, vinegar to treat nail fungus. If you do not get results with one type, you may try the other. When using distilled vinegar, mix a solution of half water and half vinegar and soak nails for at least 10 minutes a day, according to Nailfunguscure.org. You may soak longer if you like, as with the apple cider vinegar. You can also mix the solution in a spray bottle and spray the nail repeatedly during the day.

Other Remedies and Solutions

Most doctors prescribe antifungal medications to treat nail fungus. You can take prescriptions like terbinafine (Lamisil) and itraconazole (Sporanox) orally, or use an antifungal nail lacquer containing ciclopirox (Loprox or Penlac). For reasons not understood, Vicks Vaporub is effective in helping get rid of nail fungus, according to Mayoclinic.com.

What Are the Health Benefits of Colloidal Silver?

Colloidal silver is widely available at natural health and health food stores, as a supplement and natural remedy. People have discovered its use as an antibiotic, antiviral and anti-fungal, and for other related purposes. It was used extensively for such purposes before the invention of prescription antibiotic drugs in the early 20th century, but it was then replaced by prescription medicines.

Colloidal silver has been proven effective against a variety of bacterial infections. One study in the medical journal Lancet showed that even a 5 ppm solution could kill the bacteria responsible for typhoid. It was later found to be useful in fighting gonorrhea. Researchers studying a variety of colloidal metals found that mercury and silver were effective against many bacteria, and silver did not have the negative side effects that mercury did. Current estimates put the number of types of pathogen that colloidal silver can actively fight at over 600, including E. coli.

Colloidal silver's activity against viruses makes it an option for dealing with colds and flu for people who want to avoid conventional medications. In addition, it has shown some promise in a 2005 study for activity against HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Researchers found that silver can inhibit the virus from binding to host cells in vitro.

Anti-fungal & Anti-yeast

Another benefit of colloidal silver is its activity against yeast and fungi. It's used for treating ringworm in people and pets. It can be applied topically for this purpose and taken internally for additional systemic support. Silver solution is also helpful for candida, and is used internally for people with candidiasis. It may be beneficial when taken as an antibiotic, as it may prevent yeast infections that sometimes accompany their use. Another use for topical colloidal silver is fungal nail infections, which in many cases respond well to this treatment.

Colloidal silver has general antiseptic properties that make it a good option for sterilizing wounds before other treatment or bandaging. Some people use it for gargling to reduce the bacteria that cause bad breath, and to improve gum health in people and pets. And pet owners use it as an eye wash and ear wash for cats and dogs.

Because colloidal silver is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, it can kill beneficial bacteria as well as harmful bacteria. So it's a good idea to take probiotics throughout the duration of internal use of silver solution in order to ensure that beneficial gut flora are maintained.

About Ionic Foot Baths

About Ionic Foot Baths

The idea behind ionic foot baths is cellular cleansing. Those that specialize in giving ionic foot baths believe that people's bodies are overburdened with toxins from the air they breath, the processed foods they eat, and even from the fact that many people do not exercise enough. These specialists believe that it is possible to use an ionic foot bath to draw these toxins down the body and out through the feet into the water in the foot bath. An ionic foot bath can take anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes.

The ionic foot bath is composed of a tub, water, sea salt and an energizing cartridge. All of these things working together make it possible for the ionic foot bath to help detoxify the body.

The ionic foot bath works because of electrolysis. Electrolysis is the process that makes the toxins in the body leave through the feet into the water of the foot tub possible. The energizing cartridge which is a part of the setup of the ionic foot bath, makes possible a process called ionization. The cartridge along with the other components change the water by breaking down the water molecules into ions. The ions are then broken down as well, and this then causes a chemical reaction between anions and cations. Because of osmosis the anions are able to move past the skin of the feet and into the body where they strengthen the cells of the body that have been weakened by toxins.

Many who swear by ionic foot baths claim say they are more clear headed, that painful conditions such as arthritis have gone away and not come back, that they feel more relaxed, and some have claimed that it can even be part of a program to help cure chronic or deadly diseases such as cancer. In theory an ionic foot bath is supposed to improve liver function, improve sleeping and even enhance the immune system.

In theory an ionic foot bath is supposed to improve liver function, improve sleeping and even enhance the immune system. One thing to keep in mind with ionic foot baths is that those with pacemakers, those who have had an organ transplant, and expectant or nursing mothers should not use an ionic foot bath.

Some podiatrists state that ionic foot baths do not work at all and that the stuff that people see in the water is just a byproduct of the chemical reaction caused by the energizing cartridge which sends a low current through the water, and minerals and sea salt which are in the water already.

Ionic foot baths are very popular in Europe, but it has only been in the last few years that they have become more readily available in the United States. In most cases those that use the ionic foot bath do so in Spas because the purchase the equipment itself to be used in the home is cost prohibitive. An ionic foot bath for the home can easily cost over $700.

Poultice Pain Relief

Poultices has been used for centuries to relieve pain for complaints such as ear aches, boils and sprains, to name a few. A poultice is comprised of whole herbs and is applied much the same as a compress, and often involve yeast products or mashed potatoes as a conductor for herbal infusions or oils.

What is a Poultice

An herb powder when mixed with hot water will form a paste that can be smeared onto a soft cloth or gauze and applied directly to the affected area. When applied directly to the skin, a light coating of vegetable or olive oil will prevent the poultice from sticking .

Based on the size of the affected area, a sufficient amount of herb should be simmered for two minutes after which the herb should be squeezed to eliminate any excess liquid. Place the herb as hot as can be tolerated onto the affected area. Wrap the poultice in gauze or soft cloth strips and leave on for a maximum of three hours. A cold poultice can be prepared using the same method, but leave in the excess liquid and soak bread or mashed potato in the herbal infusion. When cool, spread on gauze or soft cloth and wrap affected area.

Common Poultices

Sage and Vinegar Poultice: A treatment for sprains and bruising. Flatten leaves but do not break them, and cover with vinegar in a sauce pan. Simmer slightly for five minutes then remove and place leaves on a soft cloth. Work quickly, folding the cloth to form an envelope large enough to cover the affected area. Poultice should be applied as hot as is tolerable, and covered with cloth to retain heat. Swelling should subside in one hour.

Onion Poultice: A treatment for bronchitis and lung congestion. Slice three large fresh onions thinly and saute half in small amount of water until the onions are transparent. Fold into a cloth, making an envelope-shaped packet, and lay the poultice across the chest, covering to retain heat. Prepare the remaining onions and repeat the process when the first poultice is cooled.

Bio Alternatives for Oil of Oregano

Bio Alternatives for Oil of Oregano

Oil of oregano is a natural substance that is extracted from oregano plants. Oil of oregano has two key compounds--carvacrol and thymol; the concentration of these elements determine the oil's effectiveness. The concentration of the active ingredient carvacrol needs to be at least 70 percent. Research published in the International Journal of Food Microbiology found that oil of oregano has antimicrobial, antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Oil of oregano is available in liquid and capsule form. If applied topically to ease itch, infection or tooth or gum pain, the solution should be diluted. Highly concentrated amounts of oil of oregano can be mixed with olive oil or coconut oil before application. The capsule can be digested as part of a vitamin or supplement routine to achieve its benefits.

Benefits and Uses

Oil of oregano has a plethora of benefits attributed to it. It can be used to heal skin injections, and a few drops can be mixed with water to help aid digestion and reduce stomach upsets. In addition, oil of oregano has been shown to strengthening the immune system, increase joint and muscle flexibility and even improve respiratory health. Since the properties in oil of oregano are similar to pharmaceutical antibiotics such as penicillin, it may even be incorporated in antibiotics. Steven Foster, author of "Herbal Renaissance," states that oil of oregano does not promote the development of drug resistant strains. In addition, Cass Ingram, D.O., researcher and author, wrote that when mixed with certain foods, oil of oregano "will greatly halt the growth of microbes and, thus, reduce the risk for food poisoning."

Ancient Greeks recognized the many health benefits that were derived from oil of oregano. They used the oil for its health benefits and medicinal qualities. The Greeks also used oil of oregano to reduce pain and inflammation, and to fight off infections.

Oil of oregano can be purchased at local health stores that sell vitamins, supplements and alternative medicines. It also can be purchased over the internet at many sites. It is always important to check that the percentage of the active ingredient carvacrol is greater than 70 percent. Anything less than 70 percent renders the oil ineffective. Ensure that you read the directions before use to prevent irritation.

How to Treat Cold Sore With Tea Tree Oil

How to Treat Cold Sore With Tea Tree Oil

Anyone who has had a cold sore knows what a curse they are. Over 80% of the population is infected with HSV-1, the oral herpes simplex virus that causes cold sores. Some people suffer from more than one outbreak per month. There are many commercial treatments marketed as cold sore remedies. Yet, few of those work. Many only slightly improve the condition. By using a simple natural remedy, tea tree oil from the Australian Tea Tree, melaleuca alternifolia, you can dramatically reduce both the duration and discomfort of a cold sore. Tea tree oil is antiviral and antibacterial. This makes it the ideal remedy for this tough to treat problem.

Purchase the tea tree oil of your choice. Most health food stores, drugstores and large discount chains carry this item. Tea tree oil is also widely available online. Most brands are of sufficient quality for treating a cold sore. Tea tree oil usually comes in a small brown apothecary style bottle, and it is located in the health and beauty or pharmacy section of the store.

Apply tea tree oil to the area with a cotton swab at the first sign of a tingling or itching sensation. The oil can be used at full-strength. However, if you have sensitive skin you should dilute it at one part water, one part tea tree oil. There will be a strong scent of eucalyptus because the tea tree is in the same plant family.

Reapply tea tree oil to the outbreak several times a day. Apply just before bed until the scabs disappear and new skin grows in. Doing so can reduce the duration and severity of a cold sore outbreak to as little as one to two days each of swelling, ulceration and scabbing. Keep in mind the normal course of a cold sore which can take up to two weeks to completely heal.

Remove the loose, crusty material which forms during the ulcerating stage of the cold sore. Do this by patting or rubbing gently with a damp washcloth. Reapply tea tree oil after doing so, in order to help the area dry up quickly.

Keep your lips moist with lip balm during the course of treatment, as tea tree oil can be drying to the healthy parts of the mouth. Give the area of the outbreak plenty of time to dry out without being coated in lip balm. Everything in moderation. Occasional application of lip balm to the outbreak will not hinder its healing.

Use tea tree oil lip balm on a regular basis to prevent future outbreaks. Taking Vitamin C, Lysine tablets and getting enough sleep will also help with avoiding cold sore episodes.

How to Use Bleach to Stop Itching

How to Use Bleach to Stop Itching

Bleach has been known to have many different uses. In addition to being a universal cleaning and disinfecting agent, bleach can also be used to treat insect bites and certain medical conditions, such as eczema. When bleach is applied directly to an insect bite, the toxins from the bite are immediately neutralized, and the itching stops. In cases of chronic eczema, soaking in a bleach and water solution, kills the microbes on the skin that cause infections. This, in turn, alleviates the itching.

Using Bleach For Insect Bites

Dip a cotton swab, or a small cloth, directly into undiluted household bleach.

Dab the insect bite with the bleach. Make sure to dab the entire area.

Hold the bleach covered swab or cloth, directly on the bite for about five seconds.

Allow the area to dry. You should notice improvement immediately.

Home Remedies for Poor Circulation in the Legs

Bad circulation in the legs causes pain, cramping and swelling in the feet, ankles and legs. Home remedies may be able to help relieve this painful condition and get the blood pumping more freely through your arteries. However, discuss your poor circulation symptoms with your doctor before using a home remedy. Circulation problems could be a sign of a more serious condition that could lead to heart attack or stroke.

Compression Garments

Compression garments are prescribed after surgeries to improve blood circulation in the affected area, promoting a healthy recovery. You can use these types of garments to stimulate the blood flow in your painful legs.

These garments work on blood circulation by providing constant pressure on the legs to get the blood to flow upward toward the heart. Choose a compression stocking that applies graduated pressure to your legs. Pressure is applied to the leg in the greatest amount near the ankles and gradually decreases as the stocking moves up the leg. This squeezes the blood up and prevents swelling and the pooling of blood in the legs. Compression stockings can be purchased online or in a medical-supply store.

A lack of exercise and a poor diet are two of the most common causes of poor blood circulation. Develop a healthy diet that boosts circulation by including foods such as whole grains along with fruits and vegetables.

Foods that contain omega-3 essential fatty acids can greatly improve blood circulation. Choose foods such as nuts and seeds for this essential fat. Oily fish such as tuna and mackerel are also good sources of these healthy fats.

Drink at least eight 8oz. glasses of water and include a daily vitamin C supplement in your diet to help blood circulation in the legs.

Smoking and Weight Loss

Smoking also constricts blood vessels and leads to poor blood flow. Quit smoking to improve the condition of your vessels and improve your overall health.

Lose weight to decrease the pressure on your limbs and help treat poor circulation. Like smoking, obesity can lead to poor blood flow throughout the body, including the limbs. Increase your activity level to lose weight and promote healthy blood flow.

Exercise is often used to determine the extent of peripheral artery disease and poor circulation in the legs. Discuss your exercise regimen with your doctor to make sure that you are healthy enough for regular physical exercise.

How to Treat High Triglycerides through Diet

A simple way to treat High Triglycerides is with diet. Diet can help to lower High Triglycerides and often times even cure the problem. Below are the important changes that should be made to your diet to treat High Triglycerides.

Avoid refined sugar which increases High Triglycerides. Be especially careful with candies and other sweets, and drinks that contain high amounts of sugar (this includes juice with sugar added). You should also be careful not to consume a lot of fructose.

Avoid drinking a lot of alcohol. Drinking in moderation will not lead to High Triglycerides but excess drinking has been associated with High Triglycerides.

Increase your intake of Fiber. Eating more Fiber has been shown to reduce High Triglyceride levels.

Follow a low fat diet. Making small changes can help to treat High Triglycerides. Switch from full fat dairy products to low fat or fat free dairy products, and try to stick to poultry and lean red meats.

Bovine Colostrum Side Effects

Colostrum is a thick, milky fluid secreted from the breasts of mammals for a few days after giving birth, before actual milk appears. Colostrum contains a large amount of vitamins, minerals, antibodies and growth factors important for a newborn. Some people use bovine colostrum, obtained from cows, as an alternative medicine. Side effects are few and uncommon.

Gastrointestinal Side Effects

Bovine colostrum is occasionally associated with mild upset stomach, bloating, nausea and gas. This usually can be resolved by taking less of the substance.

HIV Patient Considerations

According to RxList.com, isolated reports have been made of people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) experiencing nausea, vomiting, low red blood cell count and abnormal liver tests while taking bovine colostrum.

Lactose Intolerance and Allergies

Because bovine colostrum has low levels of lactose, lactose-intolerant people should have no problems with it. People also can purchase it in skim and reduced-lactose versions. But anyone allergic to milk should not take bovine colostrum.

Mad Cow Disease

No evidence indicates that bovine spongiform encephalitis, commonly called mad cow disease, can be transmitted through milk products. But people might want to avoid bovine colostrum produced in countries where mad cow disease has been found.

Pregnancy Considerations

Because of a lack of evidence about safety, pregnant and breastfeeding women should not take bovine colostrum.

How to cure whooping cough using onions and radish

Wash and peel the radish. Then slice the radish in bite size, set aside.

Wash and chop the onion and combine it with the radish.

Put the onion and radish all together in a blender. Blend it until it turns into juice.

Strain the blended radish and onion to take out the pulp. Put the finished product in a glass. (1/4) glass measurement for adult and 1tbsp. for kids 7 and up yr. old.

Natural Herbal Home Remedies for Bed Bug Control

Natural Herbal Home Remedies for Bed Bug Control

Bed bugs are tiny, reddish brown bugs that can be found in beds and mattresses, and will bite humans while they sleep. These bed bugs can get as big as apple seeds and hide in the mattress, box spring and headboard. While it is recommended by Mayo Clinic to hire a professional to get rid of these bugs, there a few home remedies you can try before spending money on these services.

Rubbing Alcohol

Put rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle and lightly spray over your bed. Do not over-wet the bed. This method will kill the bed bugs on contact, but may not kill all bugs that are hidden in crevices.

Hot Water

Wash all linens, bedding, clothing and any other items you think could be infected in hot water. The water temperature should be at least 120 degrees F to kill the bed bugs.

The heat from your dryer will also kill bed bugs and their eggs. Place items in a dryer on high heat for at least 20 minutes. The clothes can be wet or dry.

Steam Treatments

Steam is effective for mild cases of bed bugs, where they have not embedded themselves deep into the mattress. The steam needs to come in direct contact with the bugs. Run a steam cleaner over your linens, bedding and clothes to kill any bugs that are visible.

Use your vacuum to clean the bugs off your bed, linens and furniture. If you have attachments on your vacuum that can get down in deep crevices, this works even better.

Bed bugs cannot withstand freezing temperatures and can be exterminated by leaving them in temperatures below 32 degrees F. If the temperature outside is 32 degrees F or below, you can place your items outside for several days. This will kill the bed bugs.

Herbal Bug Spray

Mix one cup of water with 10 drops each of lavender, eucalyptus and rosemary essential oils. You can also add three drops of clove essential oil to make the mix stronger. Put in a small spray bottle and shake well. Spray your bed, linens and clothes lightly, and do this daily. Essential oils can be purchased at most health food stores. Always use gloves when handling essential oils.

Natural Cures for Restless Nights

Natural Cures for Restless Nights

Restless nights are often implicated in daytime impairment, like difficulty concentrating and performing activities of daily living. If an adult has difficulty maintaining sleep for three nights out of the week, he may have clinical insomnia, characterized by being unable to fall asleep, waking too early, or waking frequently throughout the night. Research shows that establishing healthy sleep habits, and supplementing diet with specific herbs or vitamins, can be effective at treating chronic restlessness at night. Avoiding certain substances, like caffeine and alcohol, in the hours before bedtime has been shown to help, as well.

Healthy Sleeping Habits

Establishing healthy sleeping habits, like a bedtime routine, can often lead to restful sleep. Some common activities that can be part of a sleeping routine include taking a warm bath, having a light snack, and reading a book before turning off the light. Doctors often recommend that parents establish a routine for young children so that they feel relaxed, comforted and secure before going to bed, and this concept works for adults, as well. Sometimes, just establishing a set bedtime can help the mind and body to prepare to get a good night's rest.

Adequate Exercise

The more energy you expend during the day is proportionally equal to how sleepy you feel at bedtime. Exercise can be tailored to meet an individual's needs. Sometimes, just taking a half-hour walk during the day can be enough to help the body feel sleepy at the appropriate time. Exercising outside is more beneficial, as sunlight and fresh air have been shown to decrease anxiety and depression, which may be an underlying cause of insomnia.

Relaxation Techniques

Relaxation techniques, like yoga and meditation, can be beneficial for those who are experiencing restless nights. Deep breathing can help to oxygenate the brain, leading to relaxation and feelings of well-being, which are a prerequisite for sleep. The exercises can be done throughout the day to contribute to overall relaxation or just at bedtime of the sole purpose of falling asleep.

Two of the most well-known sleep supplements are the herb, valerian root, and the hormone, melatonin. Valerian root has properties similar to benzodiazepine drugs used to treat insomnia as it affects the brain's receptors that induce relaxation and sleep. Melatonin is a compound, naturally found in the human brain, which regulates sleep and wake cycles. Supplementing with melatonin seems to help normalize these cycles, leading to restful sleep.

How to Combat Fatigue Naturally

There isn't always an underlying condition that causes us to be fatigued, sometimes we just feel tired. The good news is that there is always a way to combat fatigue naturally. There are many vitamin supplements on the market today that can help us feel more awake during our day to day activities. It may take some time after beginning the supplements to notice a change in how energetic you feel throughout the day. You should always talk to your doctor before you start taking supplements and natural remedies for your ailments. Your doctor may find that you have a condition that is causing you to be fatigued and medication for that condition will help with your fatigue. Here are some steps to follow when combating fatigue naturally.

You should start your supplements with vitamins B and C along with Siberian Ginseng and Panax Ginseng. Both vitamins B and C have been known to boosts immune systems and have other great benefits. Siberian and Panax Ginsengs have been used as natural energy boosters for quite some time. The dual Ginsengs plus vitamins B and C are a great way to start off any supplement regiments to combat fatigue naturally.

If you are and have been taking a supplement with Siberian Ginseng, Panax Ginseng, and vitamins B and C and it is not working like it should you can add to it. If you have a low level of magnesium in your body it can cause you to feel fatigued, try adding about 400 to 800 mgs of it to your daily vitamin regiment. You can also add NADH, an enzyme that is made naturally to help boost energy levels. You would take 2.5 mgs of NADH twice a day for ten days and then 5 mgs twice a day

There are other beneficial things are amino acids, adrenal complex and flaxseed oil. If the amount of protein in your body is low it can cause you to feel tired. Amino Acid can keep the protein building blocks from becoming low. Flaxseed oil has fatty acids that will help build up the immune system and will help cell components gain more strength. You can take one tsp. of flaxseed oil a day, 2 pills of adrenal complex in the mornings, and one pill twice a day of amino acids. You should talk to your doctor about the pros and cons of taking different natural remedies to help your fatigue.

Household Cures for Ringworm

Household Cures for Ringworm

Ringworm is a fungal infection that gets its name from the raised red ring that it creates on the skin. It is spread by direct physical contact. There are home remedies that you may try, but a simple and effective cure is to expose the infected area to natural sunlight. The UV rays of the sun are a potent fungal killer, according to Christina's Home Remedies website.

Essential Oils

Mild to moderate cases of ringworm can be treated with a combination of essential oils, available from health food stores and the natural food sections of major supermarkets. Peppermint, myrrh, tea tree, geranium, and lavender essential oils have been used to varying degrees of success, according to the Safe Natural Cures website, when directly applied to affected areas. Mix one drop of lavender essential oil with two drops of tea tree essential oil and one teaspoon of Jojoba Carrier Oil. This mixture should be applied with a cotton swab to the affected area three times daily.

Ginger and Golden Seal Tincture

Ginger has powerful anti-fungal properties. A useful ringworm-fighting paste can be made when ginger is combined with golden seal, a perennial herb with anti-inflammatory properties, explains the Christina's Home Remedies site. Mix one tablespoon of ginger powder with three to four drops of liquid golden seal extract to form a paste, which should be applied liberally to the affected area three times daily. Leave the paste on for 30 minutes or until it has completely dried. Then rinse off with warm water.

Vinegar and Lemon Juice

Vinegar and lemon juice are strongly acidic, a property which is hostile to fungal growth, says Christina's Home Remedies. The best way to apply vinegar or lemon juice to a ringworm-infected area is directly and undiluted. Soak a cotton ball or cotton makeup pad in apple cider vinegar or pure lemon juice and affix it to the affected spot with a bandage for 30 minutes, twice daily. This procedure should be repeated for one week.

Does Goat's Milk Really Help Get Rid of Blackheads?

Blackheads are made when oil forms and hardens in your skin. It can be an annoying and painful condition. Goat's milk is a home remedy that is supposed to help remove the blackheads from your skin. It can be purchased from a health food store and shouldn't be that hard to find.

Milk and Alternatives

Applying goat's milk straight to the skin is supposed to work, but there are other methods. There are special soaps that have goat's milk put right into them. This can help twice as much because soap is a cleansing product that will loosen the blackheads, as the goat's milk simultaneously works as well.

People say...

Although there are plenty of people that have cited this cure on blogs and message boards, but there is no scientific evidence to back it up. There really isn't any harm in trying this, as goat's milk can in no way harm your skin. But again, it may not work. Parenting expert, Dr. William Sears warns that the only danger in using goat's milk concerns allergic reactions. If you are allergic, then it should be common sense not to use it, but the only other warning he gives is for ingesting. He suggest that goat's milk provides some extra health benefits over cow's milk, yet lacks in other essential nutrients.

The cost

While there is no harm in this physically, you might want to weigh the price tags. If it turns out the goat's milk doesn't work, you are only out a few dollars. There are plenty of other medical face washes and products made to remove blackheads that also don't have a 100 percent guarantee of working. Some face washes and medications can cost more than 10 dollars a piece at places like Walmart, so goat's milk is not a bad option to try. If it doesn't work, you didn't waste too much money, and if it does work, you can get it pretty cheap.

How to Treat Fibromyalgia Pain Naturally

How to Treat Fibromyalgia Pain Naturally

The National Institutes of Health estimate that over 5 million Americans suffer from fibromyalgia. More likely to affect women than men, the disorder creates chronic pain in the muscles and tender spots all over the body. Aside from muscular sensitivity, fibromyalgia may cause a number of other issues, such as depression, extreme fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome and memory loss. In some cases, physical or mental trauma triggers the disorder, while in other cases, problems develop over time. Although no cure currently exists, medications can help ease the discomfort of fibromyalgia. For those who prefer natural treatments, there are several options.

Eat a Healthy Diet

Nourishing your body with wholesome foods ensures that you are getting the nutrients you need to maintain a properly functioning system. Snack on nuts and seeds for energy. Drink plenty of water to keep muscles hydrated. Do the best you can with your diet, but if you are still lacking needed nutrients, try adding supplements. Magnesium and vitamins D and B12 have been shown to increase energy and muscle strength.

Set Good Sleep Patterns

You may feel exhausted but still have trouble falling or staying asleep. Make yourself go to bed at the same time each night, even if you do not feel tired. Set an alarm to make sure that you wake at the same time each morning. By creating this pattern and sticking with it, you can often trick your body into a better sleep mode.

Create an Exercise Routine

Remaining sedentary can lead to weight gain and stiffness, making the body feel worse. Your exercise routine does not have to consist of intense cardio or weightlifting. An evening or early morning walk can be just enough to keep your body loose and give you a burst of energy. If your own exercise routine is not working or you cannot get motivated to start, talk to your doctor. A physical therapist often can offer a better treatment program than you can provide for yourself.

Seek Psychological Therapy

If your problems stem from a mental trauma, psychological therapy can be beneficial. Even if your case has a different cause, a therapist might be able to help you determine how best to handle the emotional symptoms attached to the disorder. Along with those sessions, try journaling about your physical and mental feelings each night as a way to release the tension. A positive attitude is the most useful weapon against fibromyalgia.

How to Treat Wounds With Herbs

How to Treat Wounds With Herbs

Kids are always getting into something and coming home with new cuts and scrapes. There are natural remedies that can help ease their pain. You've probably heard that every kitchen should have a pot of aloe on the windowsill. The clear gel is perfect to treat a cut. But lemon and apple leaves work, too. You can also use marshmallows. That's right, they're not just for s'mores anymore.

Cut open an aloe leaf. Aloe contains various compounds that reduce inflammation, swelling and redness of wounds. Apply the clear gel directly to the wound to relieve pain and itching. As a rule of thumb, use aloe gel on wounds that don't require stitches. Don't use it to treat deep wounds that need stitches.

Mash marshmallow roots and apply the gel directly to the wound. The spongy material in marshmallow roots is called mucilage. When the mucilage comes in contact with water, it absorbs the liquid, swells and forms a soothing gel.

Crush some apple leaves. Usually pectin is considered the apple's major medicinal component. But the fruit's leaves contain an antibiotic called phloretin. If you cut yourself in an apple orchard, use apple leaves as immediate first aid. Crush and apply them to the cut or scrape until you can wash and bandage it.

Make a lemon compress. Lemon balm contains chemicals called polyphenols that help fight several infection-causing bacteria. To treat wounds, make a hot compress using 2 tsp. leaves per cup of water. Boil for 10 minutes, strain and apply with a clean cloth.

How to Treat Candidiasis (Thrush) with Natural Remedies

Candidiasis, also known as Thrush, is a fungal infection of any of the Candida species and there are several different types of candidiasis. Below are the most effective, natural, remedies that can be used with or without other treatments to help treat candidiasis (thrush).

Take 300 to 500 mg of Oregano Oil, three times daily. It works best when taken with meals to help it to digest properly.

Take around 750 mg of Garlic, twice daily. Garlic helps to fight fungal infections, such as candidiasis, while helping to strengthen the immune system as well.

Take a Probiotic that contains at least 4 billion active organisms, twice per day after meals. Probiotics give the system more healthy bacteria which can help to fight candidiasis.

Take 1,000 mg of Caprylic Acid, three times per day. This fatty acid is known for it's anti fungal properties and is one of the more effective treatments for candidiasis.

Take 500 mg of Echinacea, three times per day. Echinacea helps to enhance immune function and also has antiyeast effects.

Steam and Infrared Sauna Thermo Detox

Sauna is a centuries-old Swedish method of heating the body by sitting in a small wooden room warmed by hot rocks, electricity or infrared energy. Sometimes water is added to create steam. Scandinavian cultures have traditionally used sauna as a social event for people to relax, talk and enjoy each other's company. Today, use steam and infrared sauna to relax and detox your body.

How Sauna Works

Whether by heated rocks or infrared heat, sitting in a sauna will elevate your core body temperature and induce sweating. Traditionally, participants would sit in the sauna, then take a plunge in a cold-water bath or roll in the snow, then return to the sauna and repeat the process a few times. Modern sauna participants normally sit in the sauna for a period of time, then cool off in a shower or plunge pool without returning for multiple sittings in the heat.

Effects on the Body

Participants of sauna report feeling invigorated and relaxed afterward. Some have found relief from such conditions as chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia, as well as chronic pain conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or back pain. Participants report a feeling of general well-being after a sauna session, so it may help people with depression and anxiety.

A sauna will cause you to lose salt and water in the form of sweat. Research is limited about the claims that sauna can reduce toxins in the body or release toxins such as ammonia, metals and acids. However, sweating does cause the body to release minerals, though participants should take care to replace beneficial minerals after sauna.

Sauna does increase circulation in the body, which sauna participants say is not only relaxing but clears the body of unwanted toxins. This is why it is important to drink water before, during and after a session in the sauna.

Overuse of the sauna may cause dehydration, nausea, headache and lethargy. If you feel faint or nauseated or if you have stopped sweating, leave the sauna immediately. Cool off in a shower and drink water or an electrolyte replacement beverage immediately.

Avoid taking a sauna if you already are or are trying to become pregnant, if you have high blood pressure or a history of heart problems, or if you have breathing problems. If you are unsure, talk with your doctor about your concerns.

Home Remedies for a Hormonal Imbalance

The U.S. National Library of Medicine states that hormones, made from endocrine glands, send messages to the body's tissues and organs, affecting bodily functions such as growth and development, metabolism, sexuality and reproduction and mood changes. Hormonal imbalances occur when there is an overproduction or underproduction of specific hormones. Symptoms of hormonal imbalances include acne, depression, reproductive problems, weight gain or loss and fatigue. Doctors treat these conditions with prescription medication, but various home remedies for a hormonal imbalance naturally reduce symptoms.

Reduce Meat Consumption

A home remedy for a hormonal imbalance begins with dietary changes. Chemicals found in animal fats leads to hormone imbalances in the body; therefore, people should reduce the amount of meat and dairy products they consume. Overconsumption of animal fat primarily affects the prostate and increases a person's risk for getting cancers directed related to hormone imbalance. It is better to eat soy products, because they contain phytoestrogens that balance hormone levels.

Eat Organic Fruits and Vegetables

People who eat organic fruits, vegetables and whole-grain breads reduce instances of hormonal imbalances. Organic foods work as home remedies for hormonal imbalances, because they don't contain pesticides and herbicides that lead to hormonal imbalances in many people.

Essential Fatty Acids

Eating foods high in omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids helps hormone levels. These foods include flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and lean fish, which all contain the essential fatty acids needed to assist hormone levels. People can find various supplements containing these essential fatty acids; however, to be an effective home remedy for a hormonal imbalance, people should get 300 mg of omega-3 and 200 mg of omega-3 from their daily diet.

Scientists are continuing to research the effects of chastenberry on female hormones. Some people use chasteberry as a home remedy for hormonal imbalances caused by premenstrual syndrome, menopause, infertility and acne, and women use chasteberry to increase breast milk production. People can find this home remedy at drug stores in tablet or capsule forms.

Black Cohosh

The Native Americans used black cohosh for a variety of gynecological conditions, malaria, rheumatism and sore throat. This home remedy improves hormonal imbalances caused by menopause and reduces inflammation in the ovaries. However, black cohosh may causes side effects such as stomachaches and headaches.

Who Benefits From Massage?

Massage is a set of therapeutic techniques applied to the body by a licensed therapist in hopes of alleviating medical ailments. Therapists utilize their hands, forearms, elbows and sometimes their feet. Massage improves circulation, relieves muscle tension and pain, rids the body of lactic acid and other toxins that are stored in the muscles and organs, improves flexibility and helps to reduce stiffness in joints and muscles.

Medical Massage

If a patient is suffering from a disease or illness that may benefit from massage, physicians will often make a referral to a medical massage therapist. Medical massage combines multiple techniques that aim to improve conditions that have been diagnosed by a physician and will focus the massage only on the area of the body that correlates with the diagnosis. Medical massage technicians specialize in illness and injury.

Geriatric Massage

Geriatric massage therapists recognize the limitations of working with an elderly population and are trained in proper massage techniques. The length of the massage is shorter than a typical session and attention is paid to conditions associated with advanced age, such as sensitive skin and mental illness. Geriatric massage is beneficial to the elderly, providing pain relief and relaxation to patients residing in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

Infant Massage

The use of infant massage has become increasingly popular in recent years. Hospital neonatal units regularly rely on infant massage to encourage weight gain among premature babies. According to the Mayo Clinic, infant massage promotes growth and reduces the amount of time a premature newborn must remain in the hospital. Parents who perform infant massage report less incidence of colic and fussiness and improved sleep and neurological development.

Sports Massage

Many athletes routinely have a warm-up massage as part of their pre-game exercise to maximize flexibility, ease tension and help with focus and concentration. Sports massage helps athletes recover after the event, aiding in the healing of muscle and tendon injuries. Athletes in training utilize sports massage to restore muscles and maximize workouts while decreasing the risk of injuries associated with intense training. According to the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, sports massage provides extreme benefits for athletes physically, psychologically and physiologically.

Animal Massage

Animals suffer from injuries, disease and stress, which has a negative effect on their bodies similar to that of humans. Equine massage is dedicated to providing massage for horses to increase flexibility, prevent injuries and improve performance. Animal massage therapists treat dogs, cats, birds and even some reptiles. They work in veterinary clinics and animal shelters, as well as police departments and with animal breeders. Benefits to animals include pain relief, increased mobility and decreased anxiety.

What Are Some Home Cures for UTI?

What Are Some Home Cures for UTI?

Although both men and women can experience a urinary tract infection (UTI), women experience it more often. A UTI is when you have a burning sensation when you urinate. You will also have the urge to urinate often but only a little comes out. More severe cases of UTI may bring on a fever, chills, lower back pain and sometimes blood in the urine. There are home remedies to treat the symptoms of a UTI. However, if your UTI lasts for more than 2 days, you will need to be treated by a medical professional.

Baking Soda

Baking soda will ease a UTI since it neutralizes the acid in your urine. Add 1 tsp. of baking soda to a glass of water and drink it. This is a very easy and inexpensive home remedy for a UTI.

Blueberries and Cranberries

Everyone knows cranberry juice is good for a kidney infection, but it--as well as blueberries--is also a good UTI treatment because they contain bacteria-inhibiting properties. Not only do they treat a UTI, they can also prevent future ones since blueberries and cranberries come from the same family. You can either sprinkle blueberries or cranberries on your breakfast cereal or drink them in a juice.

Pineapple is a tasty fruit that can help treat a UTI because it contains an enzyme called bromelain, which is a good infection fighter. Eat some pineapple every day to help get rid of a UTI.

Water is probably the best way to treat any kind of infection such as a UTI and a kidney infection. Water flushes out your system and gets rid of the bacteria that causes infections. Drink at least six to eight 8-eight ounce glasses of water per day to make yourself urinate more and flush out the bacteria that causes a UTI.

Vitamin C

Take a vitamin C supplement every day to help get rid of a UTI and to help prevent future infections. Take at least 5,000 mg every day to help fight off infection. This is especially important if you are prone to infection. Vitamin C helps fight off the bacteria that causes a UTI and keeps the bladder healthy.

Manage diabetes with aloe vera juice. While there are conventional treatments for diabetes, many people opt for alternative natural medications such as aloe vera juice. However, before you start drinking aloe vera, ensure that you seek medical advice to avoid likely side effects, advises the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM).

Take aloe vera juice orally as a dietary supplement. In addition to its medicinal properties, aloe vera juice is used as a food supplement because it has some useful nutrient content. The Food and Drug Administration also approved it as one of the recommended natural food flavoring substances, according to a report from the National Institutes of Health.

Fight cancer with aloe juice. According to the International Journal of Toxicology, some aloe juice has anti-carcinogenic properties that inhibit the growth of tumors. In addition, notes the Journal, some studies have shown that aloe-emodin has anti-carcinogenic properties. Drinking aloe vera is therefore helpful in the management of cancer.

How Fast Does Goat Weed Work?

Horny Goat Weed, also known as epimedium, has been in use as an aphrodisiac for centuries by the Chinese. Some also consider it a treatment option for menopause. According to legend, a goat herder noticed increased libido in his herd after they consumed a plant that came to be called horny goat weed. Horny goat weed is sold as a health supplement, in raw form or as a tablet or capsule. The amount of time it takes for horny goat weed to work is difficult to determine. Depending on the validity placed in the information, it can have the desired effect in as little as 30-90 minutes. Some sources claim the effects can last as long as a week.

Icariin, the active ingredient in horny goat weed, does show in some test studies an ability to inhibit the PDE-5 enzyme. Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, has been shown in those same studies to be as much as 80 times more effective. Researchers at the University of Milan, Italy prepared five separate variations of a compound containing icariin. The fifth compound was shown in their research to be as effective as Viagra. Preliminary tests indicate that the so-called "compound 5" might not have the same negative side effects of Viagra (patients with heart problems are recommended to avoid Viagra because it sometimes has adverse affects to eyesight in those patients).

Recommended dosage is approximately 500 milligrams of horny goat weed per capsule. Typically these products are standardized with 10% Icariin. Two to four capsules per day is the suggested intake.

Animal studies reviewed by About.com's medical board show horny goat weed may increase nitric oxide levels, which has the function of relaxing smooth muscle tissue and allows more blood flow to the penis or clitoris. It appears to inhibit the PDE-5 enzyme, which is how Viagra works. There is evidence that horny goat weed may be able to restore to normal levels the hormones cortisol, testosterone and thyroid.

Lengthy clinical trials are needed before "compound 5" would be approved as a viable drug. This may keep the compound off the marketplace for as long as another ten years. Meanwhile, University of Milan researchers concluded that while there may be some benefit to consumption of horny goat weed, it will not be as effective as Viagra.

Animal studies indicate that higher doses of the compound Icariin, the active ingredient in horny goat weed, can be toxic to the liver and kidneys. No significant drug interactions have been noted.

Holistic Treatment for Nerve Regeneration

Sometimes nerves are damaged as a result of illness or injury. Peripheral nerves can regenerate provided that the nerves have not been completely destroyed. When nerves are damaged, a loss of sensation, numbness, sleep difficulties and pain can result. Pain can worsen in the evening when the body is already fatigued. Symptoms associated with nerve damage can be managed via alternative medicines and treatments.

Improving Overall Health to Encourage Nerve Regeneration

Getting adequate exercise, losing excess weight, limiting one's exposure to environmental toxins, ensuring adequate vitamin and mineral intake and cessation of bad habits like smoking and excessive drinking of alcohol are recommended in order to achieve healthy nerve regeneration. All of these measures will help ease the symptoms associated with nerve pain. Smoking cessation is vital; smoking constricts the blood vessels that are the primary suppliers of nutrients to peripheral nerve fibers.

In a study published in 2004 in the journal Diabetes Care conducted by A.F. Sima, MD, PhD, Menotti Calvani, MD, Munish Mehra, PhD and Antonino Amato, MD from the Department of Pathology at Wayne State University School of Medicine, it was found that Acetyl-l-Carnitine supplementation helps reduce pain associated with nerve regeneration in diabetic patients. The group of researchers found that after taking Acetyl-l-Carnitine, patients illustrated an improvement in fiber cluster regeneration, and there was significant pain reduction in those individuals taking more than 1000 milligrams of Acetyl-l-Carnitine daily. Acetyl-l-Carnitine can be consumed in capsule form by taking 1 to 4 588 milligram capsules daily with or without food.

St. John's Wort

St. John's Wort can be used as a holistic treatment for nerve regeneration pain. St. John's Wort can be consumed in capsule form by taking three 300-mg capsules a day with or without meals.

Acupuncture is a form of Chinese alternative medicine that uses micro-needles placed at different points of the body in order to alter one's body energies. The needles help to stimulate the nerve fibers, which send certain signals to the spinal column and brain which, in turn, activates your body's nervous system. Then, your body begins to produce needed hormones for diminishing pain, improving circulatory processes, regulating body temperature, and enhancing the functioning of white blood cells.

In a study released in the American Journal of Chinese Medicine conducted by Yueh-Sheng Chen, Jaung-Geng Lin, Chih-Jui Lao from the Institute of Chinese Medical Science, China Medical College in Taiwan along with colleagues Ter-Hsin Chen, Ching-Liang Hsieh, Chun-Ching Lin, Chih-Jui Lao, and Chin-Chuan Tsai revealed that acupuncture offers positive effects in terms of nerve regeneration. The researchers found that electroneedling treatment helped enhance the ultrastructural nerve organization, increases nerve axon density, and improves the condition of blood vessels. Similar studies were conducted by S Schrder, J Liepert, A Remppis, and JH Greten from the Heidelberg School of Chinese Medicine in Germany. The latter researchers studied the effects of acupuncture in the treatment of peripheral neuropathy; the study revealed that those patients that received acupuncture illustrated improvements in terms of the painful symptoms associated with their condition.

Over-the-Counter Hormone Replacement for Menopause

Over-the-Counter Hormone Replacement for Menopause

Many women seek relief from symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, irritability, anxiety and sleeplessness. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), prescription hormone replacement therapy can lead to unpleasant side effects, such as bloating, bleeding, headaches, nausea and breast tenderness.

According to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, some over-the-counter (OTC) productssuch as estrogen cream, soy products and some herbal supplementscan effectively treat menopausal symptoms with potentially fewer side effects than prescription hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

Phytoestrogenic Herbs

Phytoestrogenic herbs contain plant-based estrogen, an OTC treatment for hot flashes and night sweats, reports the 34 Menopause Symptoms website. Phytoestrogens occur naturally in foods such as soybeans, tofu and flaxseed.

Non-Estrogenic Herbs

Non-estrogenic herbs stimulate the bodys ability to produce estrogen rather than replacing it. According to FemHealth.net, one such herb, Macafem, relieves irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness.

Other Products

According to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, herbalists sometimes recommend other OTC hormone replacement products, such as black cohosh and dong quai, but research fails to show positive results.

Many alternative treatments lack clinical data, and arent proven safe or effective. Talk to your doctor about alternative remedies, as mixing some supplements and prescription medication can be dangerous.

Home Cure for Thrush

Thrush is a fungal infection caused by any species of the fungus Candida, usually by Candida albicans. Thrush can affect the skin, genitals or digestive tract of babies, children and adults, both male and female. Typically, thrush affects breastfeeding babies' mouths and women's vaginas, also known as a yeast infection. Symptoms may include itching, burning or soreness in the mouth, genitals or skin.

Tea Tree and Coconut Oil Remedy

Mix drops of tea tree oil and coconut or olive oil and apply the salve to the nipples after breastfeeding. Always rinse the nipples and dry them before feeding again. You can also apply raw, virgin coconut oil to your nipples and your baby's mouth before and after breastfeeding to prevent passing thrush back and forth. You can also apply a mixture of coconut oil and caprylic acid powder to the nipples between feeding. Make sure to rinse it off and apply only coconut oil before feeding again.

Yogurt Remedy

Eat yogurt regularly and give your baby fingerfuls of yogurt as well. You can also dab yogurt onto the yeast patches in your baby's mouth.

Baking Soda Remedy

Combine one teaspoon of baking soda and eight ounces of water in a bowl. Make sure all of the baking soda is diluted before dabbing the solution onto the affected areas of the mouth. Use a cotton swab to apply the solution and make sure to use a clean swab for each application to prevent cross-contamination.

Grapefruit Seed Extract Remedy

Make a solution of one ounce of water and 10 drops of grapefruit seed extract. Apply it to the inside of the cheeks (for babies and adults). Use this solution when breastfeeding as well. Swab your baby's mouth before nursing and apply the solution to your nipples after nursing. You can also apply this mixture to affected patches of skin.

Vaginal Thrush

For vaginal thrush, scrub your panties with unscented detergent before washing them in the washing machine. You can also boil your panties before washing or soaking them in bleach for 24 hours. You can also add vinegar to the rinse water and dry the panties outside in sunlight when possible.

Prevent Thrush

Avoid getting thrush by eating wholesome foods and avoiding processed grains and sugars. Some foods that help prevent thrush include fermented foods such as kimchi, sauerkraut, milk kefir and yogurt. Women should always wear cotton panties that are washed in very hot water after each use.

Alternative Treatments for Colitis

Ulcerative colitis results in inflammation and open sores in the innermost layers of the rectum and large intestine (colon). The bleeding ulcers form pus and mucus while the inflammation promotes frequent diarrhea. This inflammatory bowel disease causes pain and can be life-threatening. Currently, no cure exists for this condition and you will experience cycles of flare-ups and remission. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, several natural strategies might help ease symptoms. You should consult with a health care provider experienced in treating this condition naturally to design a safe and effective regimen.

Nutritional Supplements

If you have colitis, you are probably lacking adequate amounts of important nutrients since this condition impedes proper absorption; the following supplements can replenish your system and directly address the condition.

Folic acid (800 mcg daily) can reduce your risk of developing colon cancer. Omega-3 fatty acids can alleviate symptoms and prevent another flare-up; take 3.7 g of EPA and 2.2 grams of DHA daily. If you are taking blood-thinning medications, talk to your doctor about how much fish oil is safe for you to take. Probiotics, known as the "good" bacteria can treat symptoms. They come in a variety of forms; take as directed on the product label. Vitamin D (1,000 IU daily) and calcium(1,200 mg daily) are necessary for strong bones; if you have colitis, you are at higher risk of osteoporosis since your body lacks inadequate amounts of these nutrients.

The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests the following herbs based on a review of studies and other literature where they showed benefit.

Psyllium seeds, especially when combined with the drug mesalamine, can help increase the length of remission. Take 20 g of ground husks twice a day with water. Boswellia has potent anti-inflammatory properties; take 550 mg three times a day for up to six weeks. Curcumin can reduce symptoms; take 2,000 mg daily.

The following herbs are used traditionally to treat inflammation in the digestive tract but have not been studied specifically for colitis.

Slippery elm forms a protective coating over the intestines that soothes irritation and encourages healing; take 60 to 320 mg daily or mix one tsp. of powder with water up to four times a day. Marshmallow tea acts in a similar fashion as slippery elm; drink one cup three times a day. Do not use marshmallow if you have diabetes. Chamomile tea eases symptoms of digestive upset; drink three cups daily.

Practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine frequently use acupuncture to treat inflammatory bowel diseases and it appears to relieve symptoms of colitis. Be sure to go to a licensed acupuncturist. An acupuncturist usually will offer suggestions for lifestyle changes based on a TCM perspective that can also be helpful.

Mind/Body Techniques

Stress often makes your symptoms worse. Several natural mind/body techniques can help relieve stress and reduce symptoms. Biofeedback helps you use your mind to control physical reactions in the body. Yoga, tai chi and meditation help you achieve a balanced and centered mind which reduces negative responses to stress. Progressive muscle relaxation involves tightening and releasing one muscle group at a time and can be done anywhere. Deep breathing can relieve stress and also relax your abdominal muscles, reducing pain and discomfort. Hypnosis can promote muscle relaxation, reduce pain and bloating; be sure to consult a licensed practitioner.

What you eat is an important part of managing this condition whether you are using alternative or traditional treatments. Reduce consumption of dairy products to reduce diarrhea. Fruits and vegetables are important but you might find too much fiber aggravates your condition. Steaming or baking vegetables can make them easier to digest. During a flare-up, a bland diet low in fiber is best. Eat smaller meals throughout the day instead of three big ones to reduce stress on the digestive system. Stay away from refined, white flour foods as well as caffeine, alcohol and tobacco.
