How to Use Lavender to Treat Insomnia

How to Use Lavender to Treat Insomnia

Lying awake at night with insomnia is no fun. The more you think about the fact that you are not sleeping, the more your body tenses and the less likely it is that you will get to sleep. Lavender is an herb with calming properties. Make lavender into a tea, soak in a lavender bath or use scented sachets to treat your insomnia.

Instructions

Lull Yourself to Sleep With a Cup of Lavender Tea

    1

Get up to make yourself a cup of lavender tea if you find yourself lying in bed with insomnia. Use just as much light as you need to see. A dark room will help keep your body slip into "bedtime mode."

    2

Put some water on to boil. If you are making only a cup of tea for yourself, boil water in the microwave to save time. Make sure you use a measuring cup that is microwave safe.

    3

Measure out 1 tsp. of dried lavender flowers. Keep it in an airtight container in the kitchen where you will not have to go searching for it in the middle of the night. Put the flowers into a tea strainer.

    4

Pour the boiling water into a mug with the lavender flowers. Let it steep for 5 to 10 minutes. You can adjust the time according to how strong you like your tea.

    5

Discard the lavender after the tea has finished brewing. Add honey, sugar or milk if you like. After a few sips, you will probably start to feel your body relax enough that you can fall asleep.

Tuck a Lavender Sachet Under Your Pillow

    6

Cut a piece of fabric in a square shape. Avoid using mesh or lace fabrics because the lavender will fall out through the holes. The larger the square, the larger your sachet will be.

    7

Fold the fabric square in half. Using a needle and thread, sew 3 sides of the square so that you are left with a pocket.

    8

Turn the pocket inside out so that the stitching cannot be seen as easily.

    9

Scoop some dried lavender flowers into the pocket. Sew the remaining side closed.

    10

Tuck the lavender sachet under your pillow for a fresh, relaxing scent. Not only will it help ease you back to sleep when you wake up, but your sheets will smell nice, too.

Ward Off Insomnia With a Lavender Soak

    11

Fill up your bathtub with warm water as you are getting ready for bed.

    12

Add about 1/2 cup of dried lavender flowers to the bath water. If you have lavender essential oil instead of flowers, add 2 to 4 drops.

    13

Get into the bath and let the steam release the lavender's calming scent. If you have a history of insomnia, taking a lavender soak before bedtime can help you relax and fall asleep more easily.

The Best Alternative Supplement for Anxiety

Anxiety disorders can develop in both children and adults, according to the Mayo Clinic. There are, fortunately, several herbs that have been used traditionally by different cultures to induce states of calm and relaxation. It is good to know the proven effects of these supplements as well as their safety before choosing one that is best for you. All of the following herbal supplements are available online and at health food stores.

Kava Kava

Kava Kava is an herb that is native to the South Pacific and was used in traditional societies to induce states of relaxation and sedation. A study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research in April 2004 by F. P. Geier and T. Konstantinowicz tested an extract of the Kava plant on patients diagnosed with non-psychotic anxiety disorders. The extract was administered for four weeks and was found to effect a reduction in anxiety symptoms in comparison with a placebo. Kava, however, may be damaging to the liver if taken in large amounts or for too long, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued warnings about it, according to Daniel K. Hall-Flavin, M.D, of the Mayo Clinic.

Passion Flower

Passion flower is an herb that has been used in western herbology to treat insomnia, restlessness and low libido (hence its name). A study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology in December 2001, by Kamaldeep Dhawan and a team of researchers, found that an extract of passion flower was able to significantly reduce anxiety symptoms in mice. Passion flower is associated few known side effects, according to Hall-Flavin.

Valerian

The root of the valerian plant is a strongly aromatic herb that has a long history of use in western herbalism as a natural sedative. A study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research in October 2002 by Roberto Andreatini and a team of researchers measured an extract from valerian root against a pharmaceutical medication for the treatment of anxiety. The researchers concluded that the valerian extract may have a potential effect on the symptoms of anxiety. Valerian is also associated with few sided effects, according to Hall-Flavin.

Considerations

According to Hall-Flavin, it is best to consult with a doctor when treating yourself with herbal medications for anxiety. Besides taking supplements, there may be several other beneficial components to treating anxiety, including working with a psychologist or other mental health professional.

How to Make Silver Nasal Spray

Colloidal silver nasal spray is an effective treatment for sinus infections. It was commonly used before the invention of antibiotics. Today, colloidal silver is still used regularly as a topical solution, internal treatment and nasal spray. If made correctly, its use is safe and effective. Colloidal silver is available for purchase at many health food and herbal stores. If you choose to make your own, be certain to use only distilled water to avoid unwanted effects.

Instructions

    1

Strip the free end of the power supply cord. Attach one alligator clip to each wire by running wire through the hole on the end. Wrap the wire several times to ensure a good connection.

    2

Attach one silver electrode to each wire by clipping with the alligator clip. Pour distilled water into the glass jar. Fill the jar within 1 inch from the top.

    3

Bend the silver electrodes about 1 or 2 inches from the alligator clip to make a lip on which to rest the electrode. Insert the electrodes into the water, and rest the lip on the edge of the jar. Be sure the alligator clips are not touching the water, and that the electrodes are not touching each other.

    4

Plug the power supply into the wall outlet. Let the colloidal silver generator run until the water starts to change color. The time for this varies based on the amount of water, voltage of the power supply, and the size of the silver electrodes.

    5

Unplug the power supply when the colloidal sliver is finished, and remove the electrodes. Detach the silver from the alligator clips to store the parts.

    6

Pour the colloidal silver into your nasal spray container. Close tightly and label. Use as directed by your practitioner.

Uses of Caprylic Acid Tablets

Caprylic acid, also called octanoic acid, is a short-chain fatty acid that occurs in human and cow's milk, palm kernel oil, and coconut oil. The supplement form is usually derived from coconut milk. It has been known for at least 40 years to have anti-fungal qualities, so it is used in the treatment of many fungus-based illnesses. Many doctors prefer it over Nystatin, an anti-fungal drug that has several undesirable side effects. Caprylic acid is available in liquid, tablet and capsule form.

Conditions Treated with Caprylic Acid

Caprylic acid is used to treat a broad range of fungal problems, including vaginal yeast infection, male yeast infection (or "jock itch,") oral thrush, and candidiasis (intestinal yeast overgrowth).

Dosage

The standard dose is 1000 mg to 2000 mg daily, taken internally with meals. Most health practitioners recommend starting with a small dose and working up to 2000 mg gradually. Starting with too much too soon can cause a rapid die-off of fungus that may result in unpleasant flu-like symptoms.

How it Works

Experts aren't entirely sure how caprylic acid works against fungus, but it is thought that its acidity allows it to break through fungal cell walls easily, leading to the breakdown of fungal colonies. It is highly fat-soluble, and fats are often able to migrate through cell walls, allowing the acid into cells directly. Candida albicans, the fungus that causes yeast infections, can colonize the colon in the form of a membrane, and caprylic acid's cell-destroying actions seem to break such a membrane apart.

Tips for Usage

Because caprylic acid's fat solubility is part of what makes it beneficial, the Web site Fungusfocus.com recommends you consume it with meals that include some fat --- butter, olive oil, or even fat from oily fish.

When trying to beat any kind of fungal infection, it's a good idea to eliminate foods from your diet that create a fungus-friendly environment. This includes sugar, alcohol, caffeine, non-fermented dairy products, and (some say) wheat.

To Keep in Mind

Mild gastrointestinal upset such as nausea or slight diarrhea sometimes occur when treatment with caprylic acid begins. This is called the die-off effect, and is a normal result of the dead fungus working its way out of your system. You can help it along by being sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day --- eight glasses at least.

While tablets can be highly effective, many natural health practitioners recommend taking caprylic acid in a timed-release capsule formula so that it can reach the small intestine before being entirely dissolved.

How to Cure Hepatitis C With Silver

Hepatitis C is a disease caused by a viral infection of the liver. It is most commonly spread through direct contact with contaminated blood products or via the blood of an infected individual. The onset of symptoms is generally gradual, with most affected people being unaware they are sick for several years. While there is no actual cure for hepatitis C, anecdotal evidence suggests the use of colloidal silver can drastically reduce viral loads and leave an infected person relatively symptom free and feeling better than they have in years.

Instructions

    1

Do your research and be sure you understand what you are taking and what sort of results you can expect. Colloidal sliver is a solution made from distilled water, microscopic flecks of silver metal and charged silver particles known as ions. In theory, the hepatitis C virus is attracted to the charge of the ion, drawing it out of your tissue and toward the particle. This makes it easier for the immune system to isolate and attack the virus.

    2

Locate a reliable source of colloidal silver (see Resources), or make your own. Choose a type of solution that is labeled "True Colloids."

    3

Determine your dosage. Colloidal silver is not carcinogenic, and large doses are not harmful; however, it can be expensive, so there is no reason to take more than you need. A reasonable starting dose for an adult is 1 tbsp. four times a day for 30 days. If you do not see a significant drop in your viral load, increase your dosage to 2 tbsp. four times a day. If, on the other hand, your viral load has returned to normal after 1 month, decrease your dosage to 3 tbsp. per day for 30 days.

    4

Begin a maintenance dosage of half the original effective dose 60 days after your viral load has returned to normal.

    5

Consider taking other steps to remove the toxins in your daily life, such as stopping smoking and reducing your intake of alcohol, sugar and highly processed foods for the greatest effect.

How to Use Tea Tree Oil for Candida

How to Use Tea Tree Oil for Candida

Candida, or fungal skin infections, are common after using antibiotics when the natural healthy bacteria of the body is reduced significantly, allowing yeast to grow out of control. Common forms of candida include thrush, nail infections, yeast infections, jock itch and moist, itchy rashes. Tea tree oil, with powerful anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties can help to clear-up candida naturally.

Instructions

    1

Treat the most common form of candida fungal infections, athlete's foot, by placing a bit of pure tea tree oil on a cotton ball and applying to affected areas one to three times daily to kill the infection. To prevent athlete's foot from returning, apply the oil to your feet after walking barefoot in any public place. Additionally, you can help to remove dead skin cells from your feet which harbor bacteria and fungus by mixing 4 or 5 drops of oil with a heaping tsp. of baking soda, massaging the feet and then rinsing thoroughly.

    2

Use tea tree oil to help combat vaginal yeast infection, another common form of candida. Mix just 1 part oil with 20 parts pure, clean water and dampen a tampon in the solution. Keep the tampon in overnight, and repeat each night until your symptoms subside.

    3

Get rid of nail fungus once and for all, maybe the most difficult form of candida to treat. Apply a generous amount of tea tree oil to the affected area three or four times daily, making sure to get under the nail, around the cuticles and over the top of the nail itself. For difficult infections, mix 1 part oil with 5 parts water and soak the nail for 10 minutes each day.

    4

Soothe candida skin infections by soaking a cloth in a warm water solution of 1 part tea tree oil and 5 parts water. Apply to the affected area for 10 minutes, two or three times per week, diluting the solution if you experience irritation. For larger skin infections, add 15 drops of tea tree oil to a warm bath and soak for up to 15 minutes, two or three times weekly.

    5

Clear away thrush, candida which occurs in the mouth and throat by making a tea tree oil gargle. Mix 3 or 4 drops of oil for every 2 tbsp. of water and gargle for 30 seconds, two or three times daily.

How to Balance T3 & T4 Levels Naturally

How to Balance T3 & T4 Levels Naturally

The thyroid controls many hormones that affect several important functions of the human body. The T3 and T4 hormones, the thyroid hormones, assist in general protein synthesis and balance nitrogen levels, which affects metabolism and energy levels. When the thyroid isn't functioning properly, a variety of methods exist to regulate and control the hormones. Those who are interested in treating a thyroid condition naturally will be interested to learn that there are several easy remedies to try. However, if issues persist, a doctor's care may be required.

Instructions

    1

Change your diet. According to the Podell Medical Practice's website, the diet is often overlooked as a culprit of hypothyroidism. Poor nutrition can inhibit the thyroid's ability to make T4, as well as reduce it's ability to convert T4 into T3. Eating too much cabbage, brussels sprouts, broccoli or cauliflower can actually block the thyroid.

    2

Review your medicines with your physician. Lithium is a common thyroid-blocker, as is the supplement L-Carnitine in high doses.

    3

Increase your selenium intake. Selenium helps the body convert T4 in to T3, and may also "suppress anti-thyroid antibodies," according to Dr. Podell, who calls it the "sleeping giant" of natural thyroid remedies.

    4

Increase your intake of natural foods. Include whole grains, seafood, nuts and seeds, in addition to a multi-vitamin containing Vitamin D and Zinc. Processed sugar, white flour and caffeine may also affect the thyroid; eliminating these substances from your diet may not only help your thyroid, but will also increase your overall health.

How to Treat Canker Sores With Goldenseal Tea

Goldenseal is a plant touted for its medicinal properties. It contains hydrazine and berberine, mild astringents and antiseptics that may soothe canker sores. By simply swishing this strong tea in your mouth, you can dull the intense pain often associated with these mouth ulcers. Be careful not to swallow this tea, as it can be toxic in large quantities or over a long period of time. Pregnant women should not treat themselves with goldenseal.

Instructions

    1

Chop up a handful of goldenseal root. Place the goldenseal root in the square of cheesecloth and tie the corners together securely.

    2

Place the bundle of goldenseal in a mug and pour the boiling water over the bundle. Let the goldenseal seep for about five minutes.

    3

Fish the bundle out of the mug and set it aside. The bundle can be used again later that same day. Let the tea cool for about 15 minutes.

    4

Take a mouthful of tea and swish it around near the canker sore. Spit out the tea into the sink. Repeat several times until the pain lessens.

How Does Drinking Apple Cider Vinegar Benefit Health?

Kill Or Be Killed

One of the biggest things apple cider vinegar is known for is its ability to kill free radicals in the body. Free radicals are the cause of many deadly illnesses such as cancer, high blood pressure and congestive heart failure.

Balance Is Bliss

Alkalinity is a very important aspect of good health. When the body becomes alkaline, a lot of ailments tend to disappear. Some of these would include headaches, chronic fatigue, constipation, diarrhea, and joint pain. Drinking apple cider vinegar will turn up the body alkaline and help reduce and even eliminate these symptoms altogether.

Toughen the Bones

When apple cider vinegar is mixed with fruits, vegetables and meats, it ends up extracting calcium from them. This helps increase bone mineral density. This is beneficial for older people, especially women with osteoporosis.

Fruit and Fiber

Apple cider vinegar has a substance in it called pectin, a fruit fiber. This helps to reduce elevated cholesterol levels. To make matters better, it even helps to regulate blood pressure.

Twice As Nice

Apple cider vinegar has potassium. This has a two fold benefit. First of all, it helps to strengthen nails and teeth. It stimulates hair growth. It helps alleviate sinusitis and a runny nose. The other thing it does is help eliminate toxins from the body. People who are trying to cleanse or detox their systems can really benefit from this fact.

Natural Weight Loss

Apple cider vinegar also aids in weight loss. This is very important to the obese population. It actually emulsifies and helps break down fat cells, causing natural weight reduction as opposed to resorting to more riskier extremes.

Aroma Therapy Recipe for Hemorrhoids

Many people suffer from the pain and embarrassment of having hemorrhoids. There are many over-the-counter medicines available to treat this condition such as ointments, suppositories and tablets. Most of medications work for a period of time, but often the symptoms of hemorrhoids come back again and again. This can be frustrating and inconvenient. Aromatherapy treatments offer an alternative to traditional remedies and may actually work better in the long run for treatment of hemorrhoids.

How Aromatherapy Works

Aromatherapy is based on the premise of using liquid, volatile plant and flower materials, and forming compounds from them into essential oils. Aromatherapy treatment for hemorrhoids improves blood flow to the affected area, eases the pain and discomfort, and helps with the rebuilding and healing of tissue. Because they are very concentrated, it only takes a small amount of essential oils to make a difference in treating hemorrhoids.

Examples of Treatment

To treat hemorrhoids with a traditional sitz bath, fill your tub with warm water. Add 20 drops of juniper essential oil and 20 drops of lavender essential oil. Stir the water to distribute the oils. Soak in the bath for between 10 and 15 minutes.

Make a massage oil for hemorrhoids by combining one ounce of jojoba oil with four drops of lavender essential oil, two drops of tea tree oil, one drop of myrrh essential oil and one drop of coriander oil. Blend these oils together and apply externally to the affected area as often as necessary.

Topical Ointment

Another alternative treatment for hemorrhoids is to use a topical treatment after a bath or bowel movement. Mix two drops of lavender essential oil with one drop of geranium essential in one ounce of your chosen carrier oil such as sweet almond oil. Apply externally after bathing or after a bowel movement.

Along with proper diet and exercise, these aromatherapy treatments will help to ease your symptoms associated with hemorrhoids. Consult your physician for other treatment options if your symptoms persist.

Oil Pulling Benefits

Oil Pulling Benefits

Stories about the benefits of oil pulling continue to circulate among alternative remedy communities. Proponents of swishing natural oils believe that the method can cure just about every ailment and increase longevity. Oil pulling originated as an ancient Indian remedy, but very few clinical studies exist to verify any claims about the practice.

Certain oils are thought to have curative properties.
Certain oils are thought to have curative properties.

Identification

The oil pulling method uses natural oils like sunflower seed oil, to clean teeth and remove plaque, according to OilPulling.com. The ideal "oil pulling" works like an antiseptic mouth wash; the user swishes oil around the mouth and pulls it through teeth without swallowing. Oil pulling works best before consuming food, claims OilPulling.com.

Improved Teeth

A study performed by the Indian Society of Periodontics and Preventative Dentistry tested a group of people who used sesame seed oil pulling against a group who used a regular mouthwash. Those who used oil pulling showed a statistically significant reduction in the bacteria that causes plaque. The study concluded that oil pulling can improve teeth, but mouthwash reduces plaque more efficiently and effectively.

General Health

According to an article in the "Journal of Oral Health and Community Dentistry," improving oral health often leads to better overall health. The article claims that the medical community accepts the link between periodontal illnesses and diabetes. Plaque reduction by oil pulling could have an overall health benefit, but no official studies on oil pulling and general health have yet to be performed.

Unverified Claims

Promotional oil pulling websites such as Oilpulling.com attribute other benefits to oil pulling in addition to plaque removal. Oil pulling proponent Dr. F. Karach presented research to the All-Ukrainian Association for Science that claims oil pulling can cure infections, help heal vital organs and increase the life span to 150 years, according to Oilpulling.com. These claims remain largely unaccepted by the scientific community.

Considerations

The types of oils suggested by the oil pulling method pose no real danger from use. The greatest risk comes from substituting accepted medical practices for oil swishing. It is also unlikely that swishing with oil could remove toxins from the body. Some of the beneficial effects may be a result of essential fatty acids in plant oils that people often lack in a normal diet.

Herbs for Sciatic Pain

Sciatic pain can be unbearable, causing pain to radiate down the leg and up the hip and back area. Sciatica is not an actual condition but a set of symptoms. The symptoms can be dealt with, in many cases, with herbs that help to relieve the inflammation of the tissues surrounding the sciatic nerve. Many patients have found that the herbs provide the relief they have been in search of but have not been able to find through modern medicine.

Stinging Nettle Bath

Those suffering from sciatic pain may find that they benefit from a bath prepared with an herb called stinging nettle. This herb is a traditional choice for dealing with pain. To prepare the bath start with four cups of cold water and as many leaves as will fit into the water fully submerged. Soak the leaves for up to 12 hours. After soaking the leaves, strain the mixture keeping only the water and then heat. Run a hot bath and pour the stinging nettle bath into the water. Soak in the hot bath for 20 minutes. Upon exiting the bath wrap in a warm bath towel or robe and lie in a bed for one hour under covers to induce a sweat and allow for the herbal treatment to take effect.

Help from Chamomile

Chamomile is an herb that is known for calming and healing the body. The herb can be added to a small amount of olive oil to create a topical product that can be massaged onto the affected areas. In addition, you can also make a tea out of chamomile herbal extract by adding 20 drops to a tea or any liquid. Chamomile can be used daily to help soothe the affected areas of the body.

St. John's Wort Massage Oil

St. John's Wort is an herb that has been found to be very effective in relaxing and soothing the nerves. Many people have found that combining 10 drops of St. John's Wort with a couple tablespoons of olive oil makes a great massage oil that can easily be rubbed onto the back of the leg or the back to provide some relief from sciatic pain.

Soothing the Nerves

Emotional stress often causes the muscles and nerves of the body to become tense, eventually causing pain. Herbs to help both the emotions and the nerves include borage, lemon balm, and valerian. These herbs can be found in tea form and can be consumed up to three times per day while suffering from sciatica. Not only will the herbs help to calm the emotions but it will also help to relieve inflammation and tension in the muscles and nerves, helping to relieve sciatic pain. These teas are especially effective when combined with other herbal remedies aimed at relieving pain.

Contraindications for L-Theanine

Contraindications for L-Theanine

L-Theanine is a dietary supplement that is FDA approved. It is also sometimes called Suntheanine. Like most dietary supplements, L-Theanine has a few contraindications that you need to discuss with a physician before taking it. This natural derivative is purported to have positive health benefits, from relieving anxiety to preventing more major health problems such as tumors.

Uses

The tea plant is native to Eastern Asia.
The tea plant is native to Eastern Asia.

L-Theanine is a chemical derived from the tea plant and from a type of mushroom. It is a popular product in the alternative health world; it's prized for its ability to relieve stress without causing drowsiness. L-Theanine has also been shown to improve mental concentration when combined with caffeine, and preliminary research show that this natural drug has properties that may prevent obesity and tumors.

Research

Research is being conducted on the uses for L-Theanine.
Research is being conducted on the uses for L-Theanine.

Although research has not been conducted on every possible contraindication of L-Theanine, studies are being made on its uses. Usually, with drugs and herbs, the benefits are studied first, and then the contraindications. Now that more doctors know of L-Theanine's uses and possible uses, they can judge, on a case-by-case basis, if would be advisable for their patients to take it, and if it may interact negatively with other drugs that have similar effects.

Sensitivity or Pregnancy

You should probably not take L-Theanine if you are pregnant.
You should probably not take L-Theanine if you are pregnant.

Since L-Theanine is sold as a dietary supplement, doctors and pharmacists don't have cut-and-dry contraindications on it as they do on prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicines. Yet, if you've experienced hypersensitivity to green tea or are pregnant or lactating, your doctor will probably advise you not to take L-Theanine. Medical professionals can also access online medical libraries, such as Merck Manuals, to find out about dietary supplements/herbs and their possible contraindications. Always check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're thinking of starting a new supplement.

Drug Contraindications

Tell your doctor if you are considering taking L-Theanine.
Tell your doctor if you are considering taking L-Theanine.

The more serious contraindications of L-Theanine lie in its potential to interact negatively with other drugs a person may be taking. You should always consult your doctor before starting a new dietary supplement such as this. This is especially important for those on prescriptions such as sedatives, lipid-lowering drugs, or chemotherapy drugs. Although L-Theanine has been found to be a possible benefactor in lowering lipids and in chemotherapy, it is for this very reason that it may be inadvisable, since it can have unknown effects on treatments which are already in place.

Natural Cures & Treatments for Dandruff

Dandruff is a common scalp condition. It usually results from excessive drying of the skin and over-activity of the oil glands. Dead skin cells shed and cause white flakes and possibly an itchy scalp. This condition usually runs in families, but can also be caused by fatigue, stress, hormonal imbalances, frequent exposure to dry air, and neurological conditions. Herbal treatments are used topically and should bring about noticeable results in six to eight weeks.

Herbal Treatments

Burdock oil provides the skin with essential fatty acids. After shampooing and drying, apply about 1 teaspoon to the scalp. Copaiba oil is very effective for curbing inflammation and flaking. You can buy copaiba shampoo or add a few drops of oil to a commercial dandruff shampoo. Tea tree oil is a strong anti-fungal agent. Add 2 teaspoons of oil to 1 quart of water and rinse your hair with this solution after shampooing. Do not use tea tree oil if you have an allergy to celery or thyme. Ayurvedic medicine suggests making a paste from fenugreek seeds soaked overnight in water. Apply to the scalp and rinse off after one hour.

Other Natural Supplements

The benefits of burdock oil can also be achieved by eating goboshi, a Japanese cereal made from burdock. Eat 1 ounce daily. Gamma-linolenic acid promotes healthy skin, hair and nails. This essential fatty acid is contained in black currant, borage and evening primrose oil. Take 500 milligrams in capsule form twice a day. Flax seed, sardines and salmon are also rich in essential fatty acids. You can eat these foods or use fish-oil or flaxseed-oil supplements as directed on the label.

Other Suggestions

Use natural shampoos that do not contain artificial chemicals. To make your own herbal anti-dandruff shampoo, use one part propylene glycol, four parts baby shampoo and then add in some copaiba and tea tree oil. Rinsing the hair with vinegar instead of plain water can help prevent flaking. Use cup of vinegar in 1 quart of water. Vinegar can have a strong odor but it dissipates. If odor is a concern, use at night and the odor will surely be gone in the morning.

Supplements for Behavioral Problems in Children

Supplements for Behavioral Problems in Children

Traditional medicine is not the only option for children with behavioral problems; nowadays, there is a great variety of supplements such as omega-3 fatty acids, iron or vitamin B6 which, under the supervision of a health care provider, can help improve a child's behavior.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

According to the article "Omega-3 Fatty Acids," published by the University of Maryland Medical Center, Omega-3 fatty acids are necessary for human health; these are essential acids which the human body does not produce. They are highly concentrated in the human brain and are important for good brain and memory performance as well as behavioral function. According to the article, kids who have not received enough omega-3 fatty acids during the pre-natal stage are at risk of suffering vision and nervous problems. A clinical study on 100 children with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) demonstrated that those with lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids had more learning and behavioral problems such as tantrums. Fish (salmon sardine or tuna) and nut oils are the main source of omega-3 fatty acids. There are supplements (fish oil capsules) for children available at stores. There is no established dose for children.

Iron

The article "ADD/ADHD & Behavioral Problems: Nutritional Causes, Prevention and Therapies" published by Acu-Cell Disorders claims that there is a relation between iron deficiency and low levels of dopamine which is a chemical in the brain involved in controlling movement. In a scientific study led by Dr. Eric Konofal, 84% of children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) had abnormally low level of iron compared to 18% of children without ADHD. The article "Iron and Your Child," published by KidsHealth from Nemours, explains that infants need 11 milligrams of iron a day, kids 1 to 12 years old need 10 milligrams a day, adolescent boys need 11 milligrams and adolescent girls need 15 milligrams per day. Red meats, leafy green vegetables, fish and cereal are good sources of iron. Iron pills are sold in stores, but it is always important to consult a health care provider before giving these pills to children.

Vitamin B6 and Magnesium

The article "Vitamin B6 and Magnesium," published by the Autism Research Institute, explains that vitamin B6 and magnesium help reduce behavioral problems on children with autism. Eleven scientific studies on autistic children documented decrease on behavioral problems, improvement on behavior and normalization of brain function due to the intake of vitamin B6 and magnesium. Irritability and agitation are related to magnesium deficiencies. Parents of autistic children have also observed that their children are more attentive and learn better with B6 and magnesium supplements. There is a flavored B6/magnesium formula available. The effective dose is 8 milligrams per pound for vitamin B6 and 3 milligrams per pound for magnesium.

Natural Alternative to Paxil

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated one in four adults deals with some type of mental disorder related to depression. Paxil is one of the most prescribed drugs for depression, anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorders. Paxil has potentially serious side effects, such as dizziness, sweating, tremors, depressed libido, nausea and vomiting, constipation, increased thoughts of suicide and a higher incidence of suicide in younger people. The drug is no longer prescribed for those under 18.

Natural Alternatives

Due to the side effects of Paxil, and other prescription antidepressants, many people diagnosed with depression seek alternative treatment options. Psychotherapy is the primary non-drug choice patients utilize. Psychotherapy can help patients find the root of their problems and to learn new strategies for coping. A professional counselor can often help you in just a few sessions, and long-term therapy is rarely required.

Other natural alternatives include exercise, meditation, massage, acupuncture, vitamins and herbs.

Serotonin

Deficiency in serotonin levels is one of the main causes of depression. Several prescription antidepressants work on the serotonin release system in the brain to increase serotonin levels. Mediation, yoga, acupuncture and massage all release endorphins and boost serotonin levels without having unpleasant side effects and withdrawals.

Vitamins

Vitamin deficiencies, particularly in folic acid, omega 3s and B vitamins, can contribute to symptoms of depression. It's important to take a daily multivitamin and to supplement with Omega 3s, found in fish oil. Eggs, broccoli, salmon, tuna, asparagus, oranges, trout and spinach are excellent sources of folic acid, omega 3s and B vitamins.

Herbs

Several herbs can be helpful to manage depression:

St. John's Wort contains hypericin and can help alleviate depression and anxiety. A typical dosage is 900mgs daily. Pregnant women should avoid St. John's Wort.

Gingko Biloba improves circulation to the brain, improves memory and concentration and is particularly useful for elderly people who are depressed. It isn't as effective as other herbs but can provide a boost when used in conjunction with something like St. John's Wort. You typically take 80mgs three times daily.

Siberian ginseng is adaptogenic and can improve several conditions, from high blood pressure to depression. It acts as a MAO inhibitor to alleviate symptoms of depression. A person can take 400 to1,200mgs daily for eight weeks, followed by a two-week rest period, repeated as needed. Siberian ginseng appears to be safe for pregnant women.

How to Treat Oily Skin With Oatmeal

How to Treat Oily Skin With Oatmeal

Oatmeal can be used to effectively treat oily skin, as well as dry skin. This is due to the fact that rolled oats can absorb excess amounts of oil from your body. By applying a simple oatmeal mask to your face, or by soaking in a warm oatmeal bath, you can successfully balance the amount of oil in your skin, and reduce acne and other types of blemishes as well.

Instructions

    1

Treat oily skin with oatmeal by mixing uncooked rolled oats with a few drops of lemon juice and enough olive oil to create a slightly damp paste.

    2

Add one egg white to the oatmeal mixture. Whip up the egg white with a fork in a small bowl until it becomes frothy, and then fold it into the oatmeal until the mixture becomes thick and consistent. You may even add a dash of skim milk to make the entire mixture a little more creamy and easier to apply.

    3

Apply the oatmeal mask to your face to treat your oily skin. Concentrate the mixture toward areas of your skin where blackheads and acne are most likely to occur, such as your nose and forehead.

    4

Allow the mask to dry completely, which normally takes 15 to 20 minutes. Your skin may start to itch if you leave the oatmeal mask on your face for too long.

    5

Rinse off the oatmeal mask using warm water, taking care not to rub your face excessively, which may irritate your skin. You should notice a decrease in the number of blackheads in the oily areas of your skin.

    6

Dry your skin with a thick, absorbent towel after you treat it with an oatmeal mask. Again, take care not to rub your skin vigorously.

    7

Repeat this process at least once a day until your skin appears less oily, and blackheads and blemishes disappear.

    8

Use colloidal oatmeal as an additional cleansing agent for your skin. You can make your own colloidal oatmeal by grinding rolled oats in a coffee grinder or mill until you create a powder that can be easily dissolved into water. The powder can then be poured into a lukewarm bath with Epsom salts and baking soda, or mixed into an all-purpose facial wash.

Healthy Parasite Removal

Healthy Parasite Removal

Internal parasites can cause a great deal of health trouble for both humans and animals. Although conventional treatments are available, many people are concerned about the potential side effects of prescription anti-parasitic medications. Fortunately, a healthy, natural option can help you rid your body or your pet's body of these invaders.

Diatomaceous Earth for People and Animals

One natural remedy that helps to eliminate internal parasites in both people and animals is diatomaceous earth. You can find diatomaceous earth at garden centers, farm supply stores, and natural product suppliers, as well as on the Internet. For the purpose of parasite removal, you must have food-grade diatomaceous earth. Some swimming pool suppliers carry a variety of diatomaceous earth, but it is not safe for use as an anti-parasitic.
Diatomaceous earth is composed of the ground silica-based exoskeletons of microscopic water creatures called diatoms. Because many diatoms have shapes that include sharp points, the particles of diatomaceous earth are razor-sharp, but are too small to do damage to human and animal tissues. However, these particles can do enough damage to the bodies of internal parasites to kill them.
Because diatomaceous earth is made of silica, the body passes it through the stomach and into the intestines without breaking it down. In the intestines, a minute amount of the silica is absorbed by the body and used as a trace mineral.
The rest of the diatomaceous earth kills internal parasites such as roundworms and tapeworms by creating tiny cuts in their exoskeletons. This causes the parasites to lose vital water and dehydrate. Once they die and detach from the internal organs of their host, the host's natural bodily processes eliminate the dead bodies of the parasites.

How to Use Diatomaceous Earth

To use diatomaceous earth as an anti-parasitic treatment for humans, mix 1 tbsp. of the earth into a large glass of water or juice and drink the mixture twice per day. You can also mix it into hot cereal or liquid foods such as applesauce. Although diatomaceous earth has no real flavor, you may experience a gritty texture when consuming it.
For pets, mix 1/2 tsp. to 2 tbsp. depending on weight into wet food twice per day. Kittens and puppies should start with 1/2 tsp., dogs under 20 pounds start with 1 tsp., dogs 20 to 50 pounds start with 1 tbsp., and dogs over 50 pounds start with 2 tbsp. You can also use it externally by rubbing it into your pet's fur, which can help kill the fleas that are the source of many internal parasites for pets.
Diatomaceous earth will not work as quickly as prescription medications, but it is completely natural and safe to use in all healthy animals. To thoroughly rid your pets or yourself of parasites, you may need to continue the recommended dosage for at least 30 days. Despite the time it may take to get rid of all parasites, diatomaceous earth is one of the few anti-parasitics that will work on a variety of parasites. Most prescription anti-parasitic medications are tailored to kill only one variety or just a few.

Warnings and Precautions

If you or your pet show signs of a severe parasite infestation, such as lack of energy or sudden weight loss, you need to consult a health care professional. Natural anti-parasite remedies may not work fast enough in the case of a severe infestation.

Side Effects of Injectable Glutathione

Side Effects of Injectable Glutathione

Glutathione (GSH), a tripeptide of L-cysteine, L-glutamine and glycine, is an antioxidant that provides cell protection from free radicals and other toxins. It's used with varying levels of success for many illnesses, diseases and conditions, and comes in pill, powder or liquid form. It's traditionally administered intravenously by IV push as there is no authoritative evidence that taking Glutathione orally will provide the same benefits.

Discovery

Sir Frederick Gowland Hopkins (1861--1947) discovered and characterized glutathione by testing it on chopped muscle tissue.

Significance

Glutathione has been used successfully to help treat diseases including: Alzheimer's, cancer, cystic fibrosis, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, Huntington's disease and Lyme disease.

Benefits

In a 1996 study conducted by the Department of Neurology, University of Sassari (Italy), all Parkinson's disease patients showed significant improvement and a decline in disability by 42 percent.

Considerations

At this time there have been no studies conducted to determine what, if any, side effects occur from the use of glutathione, but zinc deficiency has been reported in long term use of some products containing the ingredient.

Side Effects from Allergy

It's possible that some side effects can occur based on an allergy to glutathione such as: tightness in chest and throat, difficulty breathing, rash, hives, swollen or itchy skin.

Contraindications

Glutathione should not be administered to patients who are receiving chemotherapy because it may reduce the effects of chemotherapy drugs, and it should not be administered alongside other IV drugs. Additionally, vitamin C can interfere with Glutathione's benefits.

Alternatives to Hydrochlorot

Alternatives to Hydrochlorot

Hydrochlorothiazide---commonly known as hydrochlorot---is prescribed to treat high blood pressure and fluid retention. Its main function is as a diuretic, used to reduce the amount of water and salt the body holds. There are many holistic and pharmaceutical alternatives to hydrochlorot, but always check with your health-care provider before changing your medical regimen.

Function

As both a diuretic and a hypertension treatment, hydrochlorot helps rid the body of excess fluid and salt through increased urine output. As a result, the drug both lessens edema (swelling) and helps lower blood pressure. If you attempt to achieve the same positive effects through other treatments, emphasize alternatives that flush your body of retained water and sodium.

Lower Your Salt Intake

One of the most effective ways to naturally lower your blood pressure is to lower your salt intake. According to the Mayo Clinic, 77 percent of the average U.S. citizen's diet comes from prepackaged foods, while only 11 percent comes from the addition of table salt. Read all labels of prepackaged and prepared foods carefully, noting their sodium content. When possible, cook meals from scratch---it's the best way to ascertain your exact salt intake. If you suffer from high blood pressure, a 2004 report by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies recommends an upper limit of no more than 2.3 grams of sodium a day, and it's preferable to keep your daily salt intake well below that.

Lose Weight

As we've all heard time and again, losing weight can positively affect your health in many ways. It can also potentially eradicate your need for hydrochlorot, as your blood pressure may lower itself naturally upon shedding pounds. One of the quickest and easiest ways to lose weight is through a walking program that gradually increases in intensity and the distance you walk. Consult your doctor before starting a new exercise regimen, particularly if you are obese.

Vitamins and Minerals

While a healthy, well-rounded diet is essential to maintain healthy body functions, there are a few vitamins and minerals that have been shown to help lower blood pressure and prevent fluid retention. According to the Honolulu Heart Program, as reported by the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," magnesium has a profound effect on reducing hypertension and its associated risks. Vitamin C and calcium are also effective in promoting cardiovascular health and lowering blood pressure.

Supplements

Other alternatives to hydrochlorot---in conjunction with a healthy diet, reduced sodium intake and weight loss---include supplements such as coenzyme Q10, garlic and omega-3 fatty acids.

A study in the August 1993 "Journal of Molecular Medicine" reported that the addition of coenzyme Q10 reduced the need for hospitalization in patients with congestive heart failure---of which hypertension is often a precursor. Talk with your health-care provider about supplementing your diet with CoQ10 and discuss optimal doses.

Garlic contains allicin, which may work as an effective antihypertensive. Garlic is effective when eaten both raw or cooked, or taken as a supplement in pill form.

Omega-3 fatty acids (found in many cold-water fish such as mackerel and salmon) and omega-6 fatty acids (found in flax seeds and their oil) have also been shown to help lower blood pressure. You can increase your consumption of fish with low mercury levels, take an omega-3 supplement, add ground flax to cereal or yogurt or find an all-inclusive supplement that contains both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

Alternative Medications

Before embarking on any alternative therapies to hydrochlorot, advise your doctor about any other health issues you are experiencing. In addition to these alternative means to reduce hypertension and fluid retention and their associated risks, there are also several medications that can be prescribed in conjunction with hydrochlorot or alone, such as lisinopril (Prinivil), Diovan or Lopressor. The risks of these medications also come with associated side effects, so discuss your options thoroughly with your physician.

How to Bottle Aloe Vera From the Plant Extract

How to Bottle Aloe Vera From the Plant Extract

Aloe vera gel can help minimize the pain from minor burns, such as sunburns, and cuts. You can cut open a fresh leaf, and rub it on the affected area, although this wastes a lot of the gel. While you can purchase aloe vera gel in the store, you can just as well make it yourself if you have your own aloe vera plant.

Instructions

    1

Cut a thick aloe vera leaf from the outside of the plant, making the slice near the bottom of the plant where the leaf connects to the plant. Larger, thicker leaves contain the most gel. Place the leaf in a container, leaning at an angle, for approximately 10 minutes so the sap drips out.

    2

Slice off the tip and the pointy edges on both sides of the aloe vera leaf. Separate the front and back of the aloe vera leaf by cutting through the center of the leaf lengthwise.

    3

Use the spoon to scoop out all of the gel from the two halves of the aloe vera leaf. Avoid scooping out any yellow sap that remains. Use a blender or food processor to make a gel with even consistency that contains the aloe vera gel, 400 international units of vitamin E and 500 milligrams of citric acid for every 1/4 cup of gel.

    4

Put the resulting gel in a tightly closed container that has been sterilized. Store in the refrigerator for up to three months.

How to Use Carrot Seed Oil

Carrot seed oil, with its earthy smell and myriad uses, is one ingredient you may be able to use to add fragrance to lotions or even to counteract signs of aging (from wrinkles to age spots). Massaging this oil onto your skin and scalp can relax you, decrease stress and even help treat psoriasis and eczema. As with any herbal remedy, consult your doctor before using carrot seed oil, particularly if you're pregnant, nursing a baby, or using the oil on a child.

Instructions

    1

Mix carrot seed essential oil (15 drops) with 2 tbsp. almond oil; smooth onto skin to moisturize and remove makeup. Add other essential oils (e.g., geranium essential oil) for an added fragrance.

    2

Combine 3 drops of carrot seed essential oil with 3/4 tsp. jojoba oil and 2 tbsp. aloe vera gel for a facial moisturizer. Shake well before every use.

    3

Smooth carrot seed oil onto skin to add elasticity and to fight wrinkles on your face.

    4

Apply carrot seed oil to your scalp and massage into your hair to help stop psoriasis, as well as to relieve stress.

    5

Massage carrot seed oil onto your hands to help lighten and prevent age spots, and apply anywhere on your skin where eczema is a problem.

    6

Ask your doctor before attempting to use carrot seed oil as a muscle relaxant or a liver and kidney detoxifier, which are uses that need more medical study in humans before being deemed safe.

How to Treat Excessive Belching Naturally

Excessive belching usually happens when the digestive system isn't working properly. This leads to the food sitting in the stomach and small intestine and producing gas that causes bloating, as well as excessive belching.

Instructions

    1

Take ginger in supplement form, or use it to season or marinade foods. Ginger can help to prevent belching.Ginger should be taken in supplemental form with each meal, or used to season or marinade larger meals.

    2

Take a digestive enzyme in supplemental form. Most people simply don't get enough of the digestive enzymes needed for healthy digestion. Try taking digestive enzyme supplements that include protease, amylase, lipase, ceullulase, lacrase, maltase and sucrase. All of these together help to properly digest all of the types of food we eat.

    3

Take Cardamom in supplemental form or add it to meals. Cardamom helps to reduce muscle spasms in the stomach, which can be one of the cases of belching. Cardamom also helps by increasing the production of the digestive fluids in the digestive tract.

Home Remedy to Remove Pet Tear Stains

Home Remedy to Remove Pet Tear Stains

Pets, such as cats and dogs, with fur coats light in color have a tendency to develop tear stains. Tear stains usually occur on the hair and skin below the inside corners of the pet's eyes. Tear stains range in color from pink to brown. There are numerous home remedies to treat excessive tear production and tear staining in pets.

Causes

According to NaturalDogHealthRemedies.com, a variety of reasons cause pets to develop tear stains. Pets with certain shaped eyes are more likely to develop tear stains. Miniature and toy breed dogs, or those with eyes that bulge, are most likely to develop tear stains. Abnormal eyelids may cause rubbing and irritation against the eye, resulting in tears and stains. Excessive hair around the eyes acts as a wick, encouraging tear development.

Types

There are a variety of home remedies to remove pet tear stains. NaturalDogHealthRemedies.com suggests using the eyebright herb, which is rich in vitamins A and C and is thought to act as an anti-inflammatory that eases eye discomfort and reduces excessive tear production. Eyebright can be given to pets as an oral herbal remedy, or applied topically to the tear stain areas. External eyewashes such as chamomile, calendula and goldenseal are also effective pet tear stain remedies. Chamomile is thought to contain antibacterial and antifungal properties and also acts as an anti-inflammatory against eye infections. Calendula is thought to effectively treat bacterial, fungal and viral infections as well as promote wound healing.

Expert Insight

According to HolisticPetInfo.com, dandelion extract functions as an excellent cleanser for pet tear stains. Dandelion also exhibits antibacterial and antifungal properties that may help battle bacterial and fungal infections that lead to excessive tear production and staining. German chamomile may also be used as a tear stain cleanser, which, according to HolisticPetInfo.com, is ideal for using around the sensitive eye area.

Tear Ducts

Pet tear ducts can become infected and inflamed leading to excessive tear production. Tear duct infections can lead to significant staining. NaturalDogHealthRemedies.com states that corneal ulcers may also be the culprit for pet tear stains.

Considerations

Bacterial and yeast infections can cause pet tear stains. According to NaturalDogHealthRemedies.com, Red Yeast is the most common yeast infection, which results in reddish tear stains. Bacterial and yeast infections that lead to tear stains may also produce foul odors.

Misconceptions

Infections may not always be the reason for pet tear staining. NaturalDogHealthRemedies assert that some animals have genetic factors that lead to excessive tear production. As a result, tear staining develops. Excessive tear production and staining may be corrected with surgery.

Head Lice: Conditioner & Hair Comb Method

Head lice can be persistent and hard to get rid of, and many people are hesitant to repeatedly use pesticide-based commercial preparations. The conditioner-and-comb approach was designed for those who want to avoid using commercial preparations, and a British study from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine has shown that it is four times more effective than using pesticides.

How It Works

According to the Department of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in Australia, common hair conditioners stun lice, slowing their movement for about 20 minutes. Conditioner also makes it harder for the lice to grab the hair shaft, making it easier to comb them out.

Benefits

Since most head lice cases involve children, using the conditioner-and-comb approach avoids the worry of using pesticides on your child's head. Hair conditioner is non-toxic and can be used as often as necessary.

Method

Place a towel around the shoulders and have tissues handy. Apply conditioner liberally to dry hair, making sure to fully soak the hair from scalp to ends. Comb through with a regular comb to untangle the hair, then immediately comb hair with a nit (egg) comb.

Comb through the hair in very small sections, starting at the roots. As each section is combed, pin it up, and move on to the next section. Keep the nit comb clean by wiping it with tissues. After all the hair has been combed, unpin it, and comb through the entire head again in small sections. Rinse hair and dry as usual. Dispose of all tissues in a sealed bag, as the stunned lice will begin moving again. Wash the towel in hot water and dry in a dryer--the heat will kill any lice that dropped onto the towel.

Continuing Treatment

Repeat this process every three days for two weeks. That way, any nits that were missed and have since hatched will be removed before they can lay eggs again.

Misconceptions

It is often said that lice spread by jumping from one head to another. In fact, lice cannot jump or fly; they only walk. Lice spread by head-to-head contact, or the sharing of hats, cellphones or sleeping areas. Head lice are not the result of dirty hair; they actually prefer clean hair.

How to Cure Acid Reflux Naturally

If you are having heartburn on a recurring basis, it could be acid reflux. Acid reflux can lead to ulcers, chronic hoarseness and cough, dental problems and breathing difficulties. Acid reflux can be cured naturally by understanding the causes and making lifestyle and dietary changes to prevent recurrence and long-term complications.

Instructions

    1

The first step to curing acid reflux is to understand that your body is over-producing stomach acid because it is having difficulty breaking down food. Stomach acid is necessary to properly digest food. If your food isn't being digested properly, your body's natural reaction is to increase production of stomach acid. Acid reflux medications such as Prevacid, Nexium, Zantac, and many others are dangerous because they neutralize acid and interfere with your body's natural ability to digest food. The inability to digest food is the reason your body is over-producing the acid in the first place, so the problem is perpetuated.

    2

There are several dietary changes that can be made to reduce or cure acid reflux. Eat small meals and avoid over eating. Chew your food well. The digestive process actually begins with saliva in your mouth. Saliva and chewing begin breaking down the food, so don't rush this step. Drink small amounts of water with meals to avoid feeling overly full.

    3

Raw fruits and vegetables contain enzymes that are destroyed when food is cooked. Anyone suffering from acid reflux disease is lacking digestive enzymes. Eating more raw foods will assist your body in digestion and assist in curing acid reflux. Additionally, grains, nuts and seeds naturally contain enzyme inhibitors. These enzyme inhibitors are nature's way of preventing sprouting before growing season. People with acid reflux can benefit from learning to soak or sprout grains, nuts and seeds to break down the enzyme inhibitors prior to eating them. Finally, over the counter digestive enzymes are available for times that your meal is not easily digestible. These digestive enzymes will assist your body in breaking down food and are much less dangerous that acid blockers. Some natural practitioners recommend small amounts of apple cider vinegar with meals for this purpose. Digestive enzymes are generally more effective, but feel free to experiment with what works best for you. If acid reflux is severe, using both cures can be used together to assist the body in digesting and prevent acid reflux.

    4

Drink a cup of raw vegetable juice everyday to get the digestive enzymes back into your body. Juice a raw potato, with the peel, cabbage, carrot, or celery juice. Fresh fruits, such as pineapple, papaya, or a banana with your meal will ensure that you have natural digestive enzymes assisting in breaking down your food.

    5

Marshmallow root is one of the oldest and most effective cures for flare-ups of acid reflux. This step will not improve your digestion, but it will minimize the effects of acid reflux should it occur. Make sure you are practicing the healthy eating habits in Steps 3 & 4. Use marshmallow root to cure occasional episodes of acid reflux. Stir 1 teaspoon powdered marshmallow root into 1 cup of water. Sip this up to 4 times daily. It produces mucilage, a thick starchy substance that protects the membranes of your esophagus against acid. Alternatively, sipping teas of ginger root, anise, caraway, or fennel seed can sooth acid reflux. In addition to herbal teas, sipping a large glass of water during symptom flare-ups can often dilute the acid in your stomach making it less painful.

    6

Eat 2-3 hours before lying down. Elevate the head of the bed. If you still have reflux of acid in the nighttime hours, try sleeping on your left side.

Natural Remedy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is due to abnormal contractions in the intestine that cause pain, cramping, gas, sudden diarrhea and constipation. IBS comes in two forms: spastic colon IBS causes pain after eating, diarrhea and/or constipation, while painless IBS causes sudden bouts of diarrhea during or after meals or right when waking up. Stress is a major factor in this condition. A combination of natural strategies can help relieve symptoms and restore normalcy to the gastrointestinal tract. Using every supplement suggested is not necessary since many offer similar benefits. It might be a good idea to consult with a health care provider experienced in holistic medicine to help design a long-term treatment regimen incorporating various treatment options.

Dietary Suggestions

Managing your diet is one of the most important natural methods to treat IBS. Consider getting tested for food allergies; the most common allergens include dairy, wheat, corn, peanuts, citrus, soy, eggs, fish and tomatoes. Stay away from refined foods like white bread and pasta, and sugar. Reduce or eliminate trans-fatty acids, which are found in commercially baked foods like cookies, cakes, french fries, onion rings and margarine. If gas is a problem, avoid beans, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, apple juice, grape juice, bananas, nuts and raisins. Avoid irritants such as coffee, tobacco and alcohol. Cook with healthy oils like vegetable and canola. Fiber supplements can reduce cramping, bloating and gas. Using digestive enzymes 20 minutes before eating can improve digestion and normalize bowel movements. Drink six to eight glasses of water daily.

Nutritional Supplements

Omega-3 fatty acids fight inflammation; take one or two fish oil capsules or one tablespoon of fish oil daily. Coenzyme Q10 provides muscular support, including those in the intestinal walls; take 100 to 200 milligrams at bedtime. A probiotic supplement provides general gastrointestinal health; take as directed on the label. Grapefruit seed extract fights bacteria, which can trigger diarrhea. Take 100 milligrams or five to ten drops in a beverage three times a day. SAMe (S-adenosyl-L-methionine) taken before breakfast can enhance mood and relieve stress, a major trigger for IBS; use 100 to 200 milligrams daily. L-theanine treats stress and provides support for the nervous system; use 200 milligrams one to three times a day. Melatonin can treat symptoms of IBS; take two to five milligrams one hour before bed.

Herbal Supplements

Cat's claw treats inflammation and fights bacteria; take 20 milligrams three times a day. Reishi mushroom also fights inflammation and strengthens immunity; take 150 to 300 milligrams three times a day. You can also use 30 to 60 drops of tincture twice a day. Olive leaf is a potent anti-bacterial herb; take 250 to 500 milligrams one to three times a day. Garlic fights bacteria and strengthen immunity; take 400 milligrams three times a day. Peppermint oil capsules stop spasms in the gastrointestinal tract; take one or two capsules after meals.

Acupuncture and Chiropractic Care

According to a review of studies by the University of Maryland Medical Center, acupuncture can improve general well-being and reduce bloating. Chiropractic care has not been studied as a treatment for IBS but chiropractors claim spinal manipulation can improve symptoms by balancing the nerves that carry impulses to the intestinal tract.

Other Suggestions

Stress is a major component of IBS; taking measures to reduce it are an important part of natural management. Regular exercise (which can also relieve constipation), abdominal breathing techniques, therapeutic massage, meditation and yoga (which can also relieve pain and other symptoms) are all effective methods when used regularly.

Heat applications such as heating pads, water bottles and baths can alleviate spasms and cramping. Hypnotherapy can also reduce symptoms. Osteopathy, which involves manipulating certain parts of the body to relieve complaints, is showing promise as an alternative treatment for this condition.

Opc Grape Seed Extract Remedy

There could be several health benefits to using grape seed extract. It contains a type of flavonoid called oligomeric proanthocyandins (OPC). James F. Balch and Mark Stengler, authors of "Prescription for Natural Cures," say that grape seed extract works as an antioxidant and improves stability of both elastin and collagen, which are necessary for joints, healthy skin, tendons, ligaments and blood vessels. Grape seed extract might improve circulation throughout the body as well and help some eye conditions.

Possible Uses

The University of Maryland Medical Center says that the antioxidants found in grape seed extract help protect blood vessels from damage. When blood vessels are damaged, they put extra demand on the heart, which could lead to a variety of heart conditions. UMMC says that several animal studies have indicated that grape seed extract lowers blood pressure. Further tests on humans are needed, however.

In addition, UMMC says that lab studies have indicated that grape seed extract prevents the growth of a variety of cancers, including stomach, breast, colon, lung and prostate. The antioxidants in grape seed extract could also prevent cancer.

Balch and Stengler also say that grape seed extract might be helpful for bruising, macular degeneration and retinopathy. NCCAM says that in addition to providing benefit for those with macular degeneration, grape seed extract could also be used for a variety of eye conditions, including diabetes complications, eye swelling after an injury or surgery or nerve damage that affects the eye.

Dosages

You can find grape seed extract in capsule and tablet form. Unless otherwise indicated for your specific condition, take 50 to 300 mg of grape seed extract daily. NCCAM says that grape seed extract was used safely for up to eight weeks during clinical trials.

Grape seed extract could help minimize the appearance of varicose veins. Take 200 to 300 mg of grape seed extract daily, as the proanthocyandins improve circulation and strengthen the vein wall. Other flavonoids will help treat varicose veins as well. Look for these flavonoids in berries and buckwheat. (See References 1)

Potential Side Effects

Though side effects are rare, some users do experience headache, nausea, dizziness or a dry, itchy scalp. It's not fully known how grape seed extract will interact with other medications, so make sure to discuss its use with your doctor.

How to Get Rid of a Blood Clot

Blood clots are clumps of blood that can collect in different areas of the body and cause the blood to coagulate. If a blood clot forms within a blood vessel or the heart, it is referred to as a thrombus. This condition can prove serious if the thrombus travels to another area of the body, a disorder referred to as an embolism. If you are concerned about the health effects, speak to a doctor about how to get rid of a blood clot.

Instructions

    1

Make an appointment with your doctor. Blood clots are serious conditions that need to be monitored by a physician. Blood clot symptoms include cramping, redness, swelling and gradual onset of pain at the affected site.

    2

Keep the affected area elevated and avoid prolonged sitting. Blood clots that occur in the legs have the potential to travel to the lungs and lead to serious complications and possible death. To prevent this, doctors recommend elevating the leg and not lying down or sitting for a great deal of time during treatment.

    3

Take an anticoagulant medication. Anticoagulants help aid the body's natural clotting ability and can break up blood clots and prevent the condition from worsening. Heparin is an anticoagulant administered through an IV and warfarin is an oral medication prescribed.

    4

Find out if you are candidate for surgery to get rid of the blood clot. A doctor may decide to do a thrombectomy in lieu of using anticoagulant medication if the condition is serious. Doctors will surgically remove the blood clot from the body during this procedure.

    5

Use compression products. During treatment as well as a part of follow up care, the patient may be advised to wear compression stockings or use compression devices to help prevent blood clots.

Alternative Therapy for High Blood Pressure

Hypertension, better known as high blood pressure, is a common condition with the potential for very serious complications like heart disease and stroke. Treatments aim to lower blood pressure by reducing the volume of blood, slowing the heartbeat and acting on blood vessels to help relax them and prevent narrowing. Several alternative therapies might be of benefit; you should consult with a health care practitioner experienced in using alternative treatments for this condition, especially if you are turning to natural therapies as a sole means of treatment.

Supplements

Omega-3 fatty acids can decrease both cholesterol and blood pressure; talk to your doctor about an appropriate dose. High doses can interfere with blood-thinning medications. Coenzyme Q-10, calcium and magnesium might lower blood pressure slightly; take 100 mg, 350 to 500 mg and 1,000 mg daily respectively. L-arginine helps blood vessels dilate, which lowers blood pressure; take 1,000 to 2,000 mg daily. Potassium in a prescription dosage might also be of benefit, but you should talk to you doctor about using potassium supplements for this condition at any dose.

Herbs

The following herbs have demonstrated blood pressure-lowering effects. Achillea wilhelmsii (15 to 20 drops of tincture twice a day), hibiscus tea (use two tbsp. of dried herb in one cup of water once a day), reishi mushroom (150-300 milligrams three times a day) or garlic extract (400 mg three times a day) . Discuss using garlic or reishi mushroom with your doctor if you are taking blood thinning medications; they can increase their effects.

Homeopathy

The following treatments are commonly used in homeopathy to address high blood pressure. Homeopathy is a very specific system of medicine with suggested treatments based on many individual factors including emotional factors and psychological makeup. Take as directed on the product label.

Argentum nitricum works best if you are prone to feeling claustrophobic and strongly crave sweet and salty foods. Aurum metallicum is most effective if you are of a more serious nature, feel worse at the end of the day and have a strong desire to drink alcohol and feel angry when you have failed at something, particularly career related. Use calcarea carbonica if you often feel tired and overwhelmed when ill, have clammy hands and feet and usually feel cold. Lachesis is most effective if you are usually talkative and agitated, fear disease, and feel tightness in the chest. Use nux vomica if you are prone to being impatient, get angry over delays, and are ambitious. You might also crave coffee and other stimulating food and drink.

Massage

Managing stress is an important part of naturally controlling blood pressure. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, massage can reduce blood pressure and steroid hormones, which are indicative of stress. If you have high blood pressure and are under a lot of stress, massage therapy might be of particular benefit for you.

Acupuncture and Meditation

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center,a small number of studies indicate that acupuncture and transcendental meditation (TM) can reduce blood pressure. More studies are needed to form definitive links. Acupuncture usually requires a number of sessions to treat a particular condition, and you will only benefit from meditation if you do it on a regular basis. To start off, you should try for at least a couple of times a week for at least 15 minutes.

Nonmedicinal Ways to Clear Congestion

Nonmedicinal Ways to Clear Congestion

Congestion occurs when the nasal passages become inflamed due to allergens or a virus. There are many medicines available to treat congestion, and they are usually effective. For even more effective treatment of congestion, combine medication with non-medicinal decongestant methods, or use as an alternative treatment on its own.

Nose Blowing

Nose blowing is crucial to clearing congestion and avoiding infection. To avoid earaches, which can be caused by heavy blowing, blow your nose regularly and gently. Cover one nostril and empty the other, then alternate sides.

Steam

Take a steam bath or shower to loosen mucous and moisturize nasal passages. If you are too weak to stand in the shower or take a long bath, simply sit in a steamy room for 5-10 minutes. You can also use the steam from a pot of boiling water: Use a towel to cover your head and breathe the steam for several minutes, staying far enough away from the water to avoid steam burns or discomfort.

Salves

Using a salve will loosen any mucous in the nasal passages and will also moisturize tender skin under the nose. Eucalyptus, menthol and camphor are common salve treatments.

Vapors

Inhaling the vapors of various oils such as eucalyptus, tea tree oil or peppermint oil will help to moisturize and open the nasal canal. Add 3-4 drops of the oil to boiling water and inhale for 5-10 minutes.

Chicken Soup

It may be considered an old wive's tale, but chicken soup is a great way to both clear congestion and replenish your body's nutrients. Add freshly ground black pepper to increase the soup's decongestant properties.

Sleep

At night or during naps, sleep with an extra pillow to encourage the nasal passages to drain. Get plenty of sleep at night, and rest during the day whenever possible. This will give your immune system a boost and allow it to better fight the cause of the congestion.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C lowers histamine levels, which may contribute to congestion. A vitamin C supplement will also boost the immune system.

Neti Pots

Neti pots rely on a method known as nasal irrigation to relieve congestion and prevent infection. Neti pots can be purchased at drug stores and many grocery stores. A saline solution is poured into one nostril while the user tips his head and looks at the ceiling, which allows the solution to run through the nasal cavity and out the other nostril. Although many people use neti pots on a daily basis, an article on Web MD entitled "Neti Pot, Nasal Irrigation Pros and Cons" suggests using them no longer than three weeks to treat serious congestion.

Natural Treatments for Allergy Skin Rashes

When the skin becomes inflamed due to allergy, disease or any kind of irritant, the condition is known as a skin rash. A variety of different trigger factors such as environmental conditions, animals, insects, plants, chemicals and food can cause allergies. There are a lot of natural remedies for allergy skin rashes depending upon their location, type and other symptoms.

Cassia (cassia fistula)

Some allergy skin rashes occur from excessive cold while other types of skin rashes, also known as hives, are caused due to fluid accumulation in the skin. In these cases, cassia leaves can be applied as a paste on the affected region.

Henna (Lawsonia inermis)

Henna is known to cool the skin and reduce or eliminate the inflammation. This natural treatment is used for various kinds of allergy skin rashes including boils, swellings and hives.

Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum)

Holy basil is mainly found in India and is well known for its medicinal properties. The juice of this plant can heal different kinds of allergy skin rashes and even alleviate symptoms like itching.

Madhuca (Madhuca indica)

When skin rashes are accompanied by itching, try using the madhuca plant. The leaves are ground into a paste and applied on the affected region.

Rauwolfia (Rauwolfia serpentina)

In case of hives or extreme inflammation, the leaves of this plant can be used to provide immediate relief. The leaves are ground and applied to the affected area.

Sandalwood (Santalum Alba)

Sandalwood paste is one of the most well-known treatments for all kinds of allergy skin rashes. It is also used for relieving the itch that accompanies some of the rashes. Sandalwood oil can also be used in skin diseases like prurigo and erysipelas.

Alternative Medicine for Isolated Systolic Hypertension

There are two blood pressure numbers: systolic and diastolic. The top number (systolic) is when the heart contracts and exerts maximum pressure, whereas the bottom number (diastolic) is the heart at rest with minimum pressure in the arteries. A reading of 140 (systolic) over 90 (diastolic) is indicative of high blood pressure. Isolated systolic hypertension is a form of high blood pressure linked to arteriosclerosis: a condition that involves the hardening of the arteries. Isolated systolic hypertension can lead to cardiovascular problems, kidney failure and strokes. There are alternative medicines that can be used to successfully treat isolated systolic hypertension.

Hibiscus

Take hibiscus, an herb that contains hypertensive compounds that help to naturally reduce your blood pressure levels. This herb also works as a natural diuretic: it contains glycolic and ascorbic acids that increase your urine production. The herb is excellent for hypertensive conditions, for fever reduction, and it contains antibacterial agents that help to treat respiratory conditions. In "The American Pharmaceutical Association Practical Guide to Natural Medicines," author Andrea Peirce asserts that a study was conducted on dogs in the 1960s where the dogs were injected with liquid extracts of hibiscus and a short drop in blood pressure was noted. Peirce further argues that the study led to the conclusion that hibiscus tea, when consumed by humans, can reduce blood pressure, but the author treats this is an assumption rather than a solid fact. Further, in "The PDR Family Guide to Natural Medicines and Healing Therapies," hibiscus is cited as an herb that relaxes the uterine muscles and reduces blood pressure levels, but the results are not markedly pronounced. Steep 2 tablespoons of dried hibiscus in a cup of hot water to make a tea. Consume the tea one time a day to alleviate isolated systolic hypertension conditions.

Reishi Mushrooms

Take 150 to 300 mg of Reishi mushrooms two to three times daily to alleviate isolated systolic hypertensive conditions. In "The Blood Pressure Miracle" by Frank Mangano, the author reveals that Reishi mushrooms have been proven successful in reducing blood pressure levels in people, even when other blood pressure reduction methods have failed. The author further argues that the blood pressure reduction can be witnessed in a period of four weeks when the individual consumes Reishi mushrooms three times a day. The mushrooms contain triterpenes that are responsible for lowering high blood pressure levels and for improving circulatory processes. Reishi mushrooms also contain antihistamines, which treat allergic conditions and reduce inflammation in your body. What's more, these mushrooms are rich in free radical destroying antioxidants: this helps to promote healthy cell growth and reparation in your organs and blood vessels.

Garlic

Garlic contains allicin, which helps to destroy plaque accumulations in your arteries, helps to reduce cholesterol levels, and helps prevent blood clots. Garlic also helps to diminish blood pressure levels. In "The Harvard Medical School Guide to Men's Health: Lessons from the Harvard Men's Health Studies," author Harvey Simon reveals that the use of garlic can cause a 7 millimeter drop in systolic blood pressure levels and a 5 millimeter drop in diastolic blood pressure. Take 400 mg of garlic as a standardized extract two to three times a day to lower your blood pressure levels naturally.

Hawthorn

Take hawthorn, an herb that is commonly used to treat cardiovascular conditions. Hawthorn helps to diminish the formation of plaque in your arteries, it helps to lower your cholesterol levels, and it helps in reducing your blood pressure levels as well. In a study appearing in volume 25 of "The International Journal of Crude Drug Research" in 1987, A.S. Abdul-Ghani, R. Amin, and M.S. Suleiman from the Biochemistry Department of Birzeit University reveal the healing power of hawthorn in an article entitled "Hypotensive Effect of Crataegus oxyacanthea." The study involved the examination of the hypotensive effects on rats when given a dosage of 31 mg/kg of hawthorn leaves, and revealed that the herb reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure while having no influence on heart rate.

Consult with a physician before consuming hawthorn, since the herb can interact with certain medications, particularly if you are already taking a blood pressure medication or heart medications. Take 160 to 1,800 mg a day of hawthorn in capsule form two to three times a day in divided doses.

Pulsed Magnetic Cellular Exercisers As Pain Relief Therapy

If you're considering using magnet therapy for pain, you're not alone. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), a 1999 survey indicated that 18 percent of patients suffering from arthritis, osteoarthritis or fibromyalgia had used magnet therapy to reduce pain. Manufacturers of pulsed magnetic therapy claim that it helps to exercise cells and improve cellular function. Understanding how this therapy works, as well as what current research says, can help you determine if it's right for you.

Pulsed Magnetic Therapy for Pain

According to NCCAM, you may receive pain relief from using pulsed magnetic therapy. NCCAM says that proponents of this therapy claim that because blood contains iron, it might act as a conductor of electric energy. Magnets, then, might increase blood flow, which helps to deliver nutrients and oxygen to various parts of your body. In addition, pulsed magnets could affect how your body responds to pain.

Manufacturers of pulsed magnets claim that sometimes a nutrient or oxygen deficiency in cells can cause pain. A pulsed electrical charge, then, helps add more oxygen, which alleviates pain.

When you use pulsed magnetic therapy, you will notice that the magnet uses brief but repetitive pulses. Manufacturers claim that these pulses of electric energy restore cellular damage, optimize cell performance and eliminate toxins. During cellular exercise, cells are expanded with electric exposure and relaxed during the off phase.

To receive full benefit from cellular exercise with pulsed magnetic therapy, use this therapy for 30-60 minutes, two to three times a day. While pain may lesson after one session, you will not experience complete benefits right away.

Research on Magnetic Therapy

Though manufacturers claim that magnet therapy, particularly pulsed magnetic therapy, can help reduce pain, the NCCAM says research appears mixed on magnetic efficacy. Four of nine trials testing the benefit of static magnets found no significant pain relief; however, trials of electromagnets---ones used in pulsed magnetic therapy for cellular exercise---showed that these magnets did significantly reduce pain. As a matter of fact, five out of six trials concluded the magnets provided some benefit.

If you do decide to use pulsed magnetic therapy for cellular therapy, make sure to discuss it with your health care provider, as magnetism could interfere with defibrillators, pacemakers and insulin pumps. Also, if you're pregnant, avoid magnets, as their effects on the fetus aren't fully known.

When purchasing a magnet therapy system, make sure to buy one with a 30-day refund policy, as results of this therapy, though not immediate, usually are seen rather quickly.
