How to Lessen Cramps Without Drugs

Some girls may use it as an easy excuse out of gym class, but for many women, painful menstrual cramps can keep them from going the things that they enjoy for several days a month. One solution is to pop a few ibuprofen and hide out in your room each month, however for those who would like a more natural solution, follow these steps to lessen your cramps. Remember, not every woman feels pain in the same way or will react in the same way to a treatment. Take some time to work out which steps work best for you.

Instructions

    1

Change your diet. Cut out salt, caffeine, fatty foods, sugar and alcohol for several days before your period is due. Each of these things have been proven to worsen cramps. Drink plenty of fluids to keep yourself hydrated and to reduce inflammation.

    2

Tale 500-1000 Evening Primrose oil, 200-400 mg Magnesium and 100-200m of vitamin B6 for 4-7 days before your menstrual cramps are due to start. These tips come from Professor Gail Mahady, a herbal medicine expert at the University of Illinois, in an ABC news report. She says that the B6 will also help prevent bloating.

    3

Exercise. It is ironic that the very thing all those high school girls are using their cramps to get out of, could actually lessen the cramps or make them go away completely. Exercise releases endorphins which are the body's natural pain relievers. Exercise also reduces the inflammation that can make the cramping worse.

    4

Increase your intake of Omega 3 fatty acids. They can help to regulate the hormones in your body, which can in turn lessen cramps. The easiest way to get this in your diet is to take fish oil caplets.

    5

Try acupuncture. Several studies have shown that it can greatly reduce or eliminate menstrual cramps. It is believed that it can do this by regulating the hormones in your body and relieving stress.

Benefits of WBV

Benefits of WBV

WBV, or whole body vibration, is a therapy that uses vibration for various health gains. Specific areas are treated with vibrating cushions, cables and dumbbells, or the whole body with vibrating platforms. Gyms, weight loss clinics, athletes and chiropractors use whole body vibration machines and techniques. Some research indicates that vibration provides several health benefits, including increased muscle strength, faster muscle repair, weight loss and bone mass replacement.

Bone Density

WBV improves bone mass, especially in people with low bone mineral density and osteoporosis. As we age, the bones become less dense, increasing the risk of fractures and deterioration. Exercise prevents bone loss, but physical activity is difficult for individuals with weakened muscles and mobility problems.

The vibrations from WBV platforms produce results similar to exercise while allowing a patient to remain stationary. Accordingly, a patient can increase bone mass and decrease the risk of injury. In 2003, a six-month study at Leuven University in Belgium showed that menopausal women had an average of 1 percent increase in bone density after vibration therapy. Also, a study at State University of New York at Stony Brook concluded that sheep exposed to 20 minutes of vibration daily increased their bone density by 34 percent in a year.

Hormone Advantages

In a 1999 study of 14 men, scientists discovered that WBV training increased testosterone levels and decreased levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Elevated testosterone levels are linked to improved muscle strength. This may explain why some athletes who use WBV experience fewer injuries and heal more quickly.

WBV also helps regulate cortisol levels. The body secretes the hormone cortisol in response to stress. High levels of cortisol can bring on ulcerated organs and heart disease. WBV treatment helps the body to maintain balanced cortisol levels and thus ward off disease.

Weight Loss

Whole body vibration is suggested to promote weight loss. In May 2009, a WBV weight loss study was presented at the European Congress on Obesity. The study indicated that obese people who used WBV in conjunction with a low- calorie diet lost more weight and abdominal fat over the long term than those who used traditional weight loss methods.

How to Prepare for a Thai Massage Session

How to Prepare for a Thai Massage Session

Thai massage is a highly effective form of massage that not only relaxes the body and works out knots, as other massage forms do, but also gets you moving in yoga-like positions and poses to channel blood to problem areas. To get the most out of a Thai massage session follow these steps to prepare yourself.

Instructions

    1

Know what you're in for. If you have an image of lying on a cushy table in a dim room for your Thai massage you should think again. Thai massage is closer to yoga than to traditional Western forms of massage. You will most likely be lying on a mat on the floor with the massage therapist using various parts of his body to bend and twist you into therapeutic poses.

    2

Wear comfortable clothing. Unlike Swedish massage, which requires that you strip down to a small towel, Thai massage doesn't use any oil. This means that you stay fully dressed for the massage. Since Thai massage requires a good amount of movement, come dressed in loose and comfortable clothing so that you'll be prepared to do everything the massage therapist requires of you.

    3

Make sure you have no injuries or chronic medical conditions. The relatively high level of activity involved in Thai massage means that there's a chance that the massage could exacerbate injuries or other conditions. If you've had any kind of recent medical troubles check with your doctor and with the massage therapist to make sure that you're body is fully prepared for the massage.

    4

Come with an empty stomach. You should prepare for a Thai massage in a way that's similar to preparing for a run or other form of exercise. You should not be hungry before the massage but it's definitely best to come with an empty stomach or after a very light meal. This will ensure that your body has enough blood available to keep you relaxed and prevent unpleasant muscle cramps.

Menopause Natural Relief Products

Menopause Natural Relief Products

Menopause is a physical and emotional milestone in every woman's life and symptoms are nearly impossible to avoid completely. The most common and effective treatment is hormone therapy. However, this option is not suitable for everyone so you may want to seek more natural relief products to help with your symptoms.

Symptoms

Menopause is accompanied by a large range of symptoms caused by an imbalance of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Your body is constantly generating estrogen while progesterone is only produced with the onset of ovulation. Since ovulation ceases during menopause, an imbalance is created when progesterone levels plummet, thus leaving your body with toxic levels of estrogen. This results in fairly common symptoms such as hair loss, accelerated aging, mood swings, hot flashes, memory loss, low sex drive or water retention as well as more serious ones such as breast cancer, polycystic ovaries, osteoporosis, depression or endometriosis.

Herbal Products

If you don't want hormone therapy and prefer a more natural path, herbal products are an alternative. Black Cohosh and Agnus Castus are commonly used for menopause as they cover a range of symptoms, including hot flashes, depression and mood swings. Kava Kava alleviates mood swings, depression and anxiety. The Chinese herb known as Dong Quai helps with hot flashes. Many products utilize an herbal mixture of Black Cohosh, Pasque flower and soy to fight hot flashes and mood swings. The use of these herbs in treating menopause symptoms is not FDA-approved as their exact mechanisms are not fully understood, nor do they produce consistent results in clinical trials.

Vitamins and Minerals

Vitamins and minerals are less common than herbs in menopause relief but their benefits and effects cannot be ignored. Vitamins E and C can be effective when used together. Vitamin E can help reduce the effects of hot flashes and night sweats by replenishing electrolytes lost during perspiration and can behave as an estrogen substitute, which will regulate actual estrogen levels. Vitamin C facilitates the absorption of Vitamin E into your body. Calcium and magnesium are also of notable importance since one of the symptoms of menopause is osteoporosis. Magnesium assists in the absorption of calcium, which helps prevent bone loss.

Nutrition

A well-balanced diet can help relieve menopausal symptoms. Women should avoid a lot of caffeine and carbonated beverages as they increase bone loss because the phosphoric acid has a binding effect on calcium, thus preventing its absorption into your body. Avoid foods that inhibit your body's ability to metabolize or stabilize estrogen, including commercially raised meats and dairy products that often come from animals that have received hormone treatments, which could add even more estrogen to your body. Avoid excessive amounts of sugar, salt and fat since an overflow will create a further imbalance of hormones in the body.

Other Supplements

Supplements that utilize natural sources to aid in menopause relief are available. Red clover isoflavone supplements (i.e., Promensil) are popular for reducing bone loss, improving cardiovascular health and decreasing the onset of hot flashes by acting as phytoestrogens, which can help regulate estrogen levels to offset symptoms. Supplements containing the good bacteria found in human intestines (lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidus cultures) help the intestines eliminate excess hormones and prevent their reabsorption, thus reducing overall menopausal symptoms.

How to Control a Nose Bleed

Nose bleeds can happen for many different reasons. Most of the reasons aren't that serious, and 10 minutes will effectively cure the bleeding. If you follow the common procedure for stopping a nose bleed, and the nose is still bleeding, you might have to seek medical help. If your nose is bleeding because of a head injury, it's best to call 911 immediately.

Instructions

    1

Lean your head forward. This will help the blood come out of the nostrils. If you lean back, the blood will likely go down your throat or into your stomach.

    2

Pinch your nostrils together just below the bridge of the nose. You should be pushing the soft part of your nose up against the bone. If you have the proper grip, there should be no bleeding at all. Hold this pinch for five minutes. This is in an attempt to form a blood clot.

    3

Release your pinch after five minutes. If you're still bleeding, pinch your nose in the same place for 10 minutes. Don't let go until the 10 minutes is up.

    4

Use the napkin to clean the blood off of your face and wash your hands.

How to Clean Ear Wax With Olive Oil

How to Clean Ear Wax With Olive Oil

Overproduction of ear wax can be an unsightly and embarrassing condition. People who suffer with this problem may experience difficulty hearing and ear pain associated with wax buildup in the ear canal. What you may not realize is that ear wax is essential to your overall health, because it acts as a defense to block bacteria from entering the ear canal. Cotton swabs are commonly used to clean out the ear canal, but this technique runs the risk of forcing the bacteria into the canal. Applying olive oil to the ear allows you to loosen wax safely.

Instructions

    1

Insert four to five drops of clean olive oil into your ear with an eye dropper.

    2

Lay your head down onto a clean towel, and allow the drops of olive oil to drip out.

    3

Repeat Steps 1 and 2 on the opposite ear.

    4

Perform these steps for four consecutive nights. Once completed, flush the ears out with two drops of vinegar and warm water using the ear syringe until the wax is removed.

Natural Ways to Lower High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure affects 1/3 of American adults, leading to serious health complications such as heart disease and stroke. Natural treatments are available to manage high blood pressure. Natural health expert Dr. Andrew Weil advises that this condition can be completely managed with natural therapies and lifestyle changes and has counseled patients to do so. An integrative approach using both standard and alternative treatments is also an option. It is imperative to consult with a health care professional knowledgeable in natural medicine if these methods are involved in high blood pressure treatment.

Dietary Supplements

A study led by M.M.Diaz and published in the June 2008 issue of The American Journal of Physiology observed that fish oil rich in omega-3 fatty acids reduced levels of both cholesterol and blood pressure. It must be noted that the doses used in the study were high and it is not clear if lower doses would exhibit a similar effect. High doses can cause complications in patients taking blood thinners or using aspirin therapy. Increasing the consumption of cold water fish is a safe alternative. Talk to your doctor before adding fish oil supplements to a blood pressure treatment regimen.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, coenyzme Q10 reduces blood pressure slightly; take 100 mg per day to achieve this effect. They also suggest the supplements magnesium citrate (350-500 mg ) and calcium (1,000 mg daily) have potential to lower blood pressure but study results have been mixed. Prescription potassium at a dosage determined by a doctor can also be beneficial.

Herbal Treatments

Garlic has properties that lower blood pressure; take 400 mg three times a day. Bilberry keeps arteries flexible; take 360 mg daily. Ginseng lowers blood pressure and protects the heart muscle; dosage depends upon body weight so take the tincture as directed on the label. Hawthorn and Reishi mushrooms reduce both cholesterol and blood pressure---use 250 mg three times daily and 300 mg daily, respectively. Scutelleria dilates blood vessels, allowing blood to move more freely; take 2,000 mg three times a day.

Other Suggestions

The National Institutes of Health studied the effect of foods on blood pressure and devised the DASH diet. Core recommendations include eating generous amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as low or fat-free dairy products rich in calcium. Limit or eliminate caffeine as it increases blood pressure. Avoid alcohol because metabolizing alcohol increases blood pressure. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, a study led by M. Reif-Hernandez in a 2000 issue of the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapy found that hypertensive patients who received massages achieved lower blood pressure readings as well as a reduction in stress hormones.

Cayenne Yeast Cure

Candida is a microscopic yeast found in the intestinal tract of most people. With healthy immune system function, candida and other bacteria, such as lactobacilus acidopholus found in yogurt, help to keep dangerous bacteria and microorgranisms at bay. An overgrowth of candida arises from a system imbalance in the body. Cayenne pepper provides an alternative treatment for the overgrowth or imbalance of yeast in the body.

Properties

The application of cayenne pepper originates in ancient times. The fruit or pepper is the same ingredient that adds spicy flavor to many recipes, such as chili. Cayenne pepper can be made into creams, as well as tinctures. It can enhance circulation when taken internally in tincture form, and ease arthritic pain when applied as an ointment. It also can be added to your diet as part of a natural health care plan.

When used to treat a yeast infection, cayenne improves circulation and helps disinfect the body. This action of cayenne pepper helps to encourage regeneration. A simple way to consume cayenne pepper is to combine it with lemon juice to make a beverage.

Cayenne Pepper Drink

While cleaning toxins from the system and boosting circulation, a cayenne pepper and lemon juice drink also provides beneficial vitamin C. Both the cleansing action and the vitamin C can boost immune system functioning.

To make a pepper-lemon juice drink, you need 1 cup of hot water, 1 to 2 teaspoons of fresh-squeezed lemon juice (preferably from fresh, organic lemons), a pinch of cayenne pepper and 1 teaspoon of real maple syrup. Combine all of the ingredients, and sip once the mixture cools off. This drink causes a sweating action, which is the body's way of releasing toxins. It also helps to restore balance to the digestive tract, where most bacteria and toxins originate.

As with any herbal remedy, consult with your physician before implementing a new regime. The cayenne pepper and lemon juice tonic is not guaranteed to produce a cure for yeast, and you may need more conventional treatment.

How to Use Saw Palmetto to Treat Bladder Disorders

How to Use Saw Palmetto to Treat Bladder Disorders

Saw palmetto has been in use for centuries to treat urinary conditions in men, which are believed to be rooted in bladder disorders. A palm plant native to the southern Atlantic region of the US, saw palmetto's dark berries are thought to carry active ingredients which can help to manage many chronic conditions.

Instructions

    1

Ask an accredited medical doctor to identify the cause of your bladder disorder. Explain your desire to use saw palmetto as a supplementary, natural treatment. Saw palmetto may affect hormone levels, so it should not be used by patients who have medical conditions that also affect their hormones.

    2

Seek the opinion of an alternative medicine expert who can help you determine what kind of saw palmetto dosage you should take. Share your physician's opinion of your bladder disorder with the specialist. Use that diagnosis as the basis of your treatment strategy.

    3

Use saw palmetto to regulate urination. While scientists are still iffy on whether it actually treats bladder disorders, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests saw palmetto can reduce the frequency and urgency of urination. These are classic symptoms of bladder disorders.

    4

Treat bladder disorders by taking approximately 160 to 320 mg. of saw palmetto each day in softgel form. Ensure that you read and understand the label of your saw palmetto product before taking it. Some brands contain different amounts of active ingredients. The amount will determine the number of softgels you must take.

    5

Monitor closely for side effects. Most users report absolutely no side effects at all. However, saw palmetto might cause bad breath, stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting.

Remedies for a Sinus Dry Socket

For people who suffer seasonal allergies or frequent colds, sinus pain is a well-known companion. Sometimes sinus pain is caused by pressure from congestion or swelling of the mucous membrane. Dry sinus membrane is also very painful. But if you have recently had a tooth extracted, your pain may be the result of a dry socket. The remedies are similar for dry socket and dry sinus.

Sinus and Socket Pain Relief

Since the sinuses and the upper teeth are close to each other, it is sometimes difficult to decide where the pain is coming from. If you are prone to sinus infections, you may assume your pain is caused by this and start treating yourself accordingly. The extraction of one of your upper teeth, however, may be the root of your problem. After an extraction, it is very important to keep the gum area that held the tooth, the "socket," moist and free from irritants like cigarette smoke and caffeine. Using a straw to drink can also irritate this area. If you normally don't drink much water, increase your water intake to give your body what it needs to moisturize your mucous membranes, including your gums and sinuses.

One of the best things you can do for your gums during this time is a saline rinse. Your dentist probably gave you an instruction sheet advising you to rinse with salt water. Mix 1/4 tsp. sodium chloride (table salt) and 1/4 tsp. sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) in 8 oz. of filtered water. Swish this solution, a mouthful at a time, for 30 seconds to bathe your gums. It is soothing and helps keep bacteria at a minimum. Do this at least a few times a day until the gum is healed.

If the pain of the dry socket has made its way up into your sinuses, you can take the same saline solution as a nasal rinse. In fact, this is a good practice to include in your daily hygiene. Use a Neti pot, NeilMed bottle or a bulb syringe to squirt a little of the solution into one nostril while you lean over a sink with your mouth open. The saline will wash over your sinus membranes, rinsing any accumulated bacteria or excess mucus out through your mouth and nostrils. Repeat on the other side, and so on until all 8 oz. of solution have been used. Do this once daily and you will notice a decrease in sinus infections and pain.

Alternatives to Benzodiazepines

Benzodiazepines, like Xanax and Klonopin, are commonly prescribed to treat anxiety and panic disorders. These drugs carry a risk of dependence and are usually not recommended for long-term treatment of these conditions. Several natural alternatives exist to address anxiety. Natural treatment strategies often involve a combination of methods that require consistency to bring about change. Consulting with a health care professional experienced in natural medicine can help you design an effective regimen. The University of Maryland Medical Center and natural health expert Dr. Andrew Weil suggest the following options.

Diet and Exercise

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, studies show that regular, intense exercise like running can relieve anxiety. Exercise gives you something to focus on and stimulates the release of beneficial chemicals that improve mood and induce relaxation.

Do not drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages; the stimulant effect exacerbates feelings of anxiety. And although there is no official anti-anxiety diet, certain dietary strategies can improve overall health and well-being. Eat a diet rich in whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Keeping your blood sugar level low can also decrease anxiousness, so eat smaller meals that combine protein, complex carbohydrates like whole grains and healthy fats like those found in fish and nuts.

Supplements

Many natural supplements offer similar benefits, so taking all of them is not required. This is a particular aspect of treatment where consulting with a knowledgeable practitioner might be helpful.

The B-vitamins and magnesium can help relieve anxiety; take a B-complex supplement (contains all the B-vitamins) and a magnesium supplement as directed on the product label.

Valerian is well known for reducing anxiety and inducing sleep. It is available on its own or in a combination supplement that also contains lemon balm and St. John's wort, two other herbs known for their relaxation properties. Use as directed on the product label. Do not use these supplements if you are taking anti-anxiety medication or any other drugs with a sedative effect. Do not use if you have liver problems or are pregnant or nursing. St. John's wort interacts with many medications, including birth control pills and antidepressants; discuss this treatment with your doctor if you are on any prescription medications. Passionflower, as a tincture or capsule extract, has demonstrated action against anxiety that was equal to benzodiazepines; take as directed on the product label.

Alternative Treatment Modalities

You might want to experiment with different professional treatments. Acupuncture can alleviate symptoms of anxiety for as long as a year after a course of treatment. Acupuncturists can also be a good source of information for treating this condition from a traditional Chinese medicine perspective.

Massage can alleviate stress and anxiety, especially when it is combined with aromatherapy. Beneficial oils known to lessen anxiety include lavender, sage, jasmine and sandalwood.

Lifestyle Suggestions

Make an effort to reduce stress in your life. Experiment with meditation, yoga, deep breathing, positive visualization and hypnosis. Start a journal. Chronicling your daily thoughts, fears and worries can be an outlet to release them, and help you identify what treatments are working for you and evaluate your progress in overcoming your anxiety. Reduce your consumption of negative news by cutting back on how often you watch TV news, surf the internet or read newspapers.

Many people suffer from chronic dry mouth which is also known as cotton mouth. Dry mouth can be caused by certain medications and diseases. If you suffer from chronic dry mouth, see your doctor to determine the underlying cause. There are some things you can do to ease your cotton mouth.

Instructions

    1

Take coenzyme Q10. Coenzyme Q10 will help to improve circulation which will help to promote saliva production. Coenzyme Q10 is available at health food stores and natural pharmacies.

    2

Use Aloe. Apply fresh Aloe to your gums and inside walls of your cheeks to promote moisture inside of your mouth. The Aloe will also soothe any cracks or sores in your mouth associated with a dry mouth.

    3

Rinse your mouth with Goldenseal Tea. Brew a cup of Goldenseal Tea and add 1 tablespoon of baking soda. Allow the Goldenseal Tea to cool completely and then rinse your mouth twice per day.

    4

Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water and sports drinks such as Gatorade and Powerade. It may seem like common sense, but many times the cause of dry mouth or cotton mouth is dehydration. To maintain proper hydration 8 to 10 glasses of water should be consumed daily. Do not rely on coffee or alcoholic drinks, they will both dehydrate your body.

How to Kill Bacteria Naturally

How to Kill Bacteria Naturally

While chemical disinfectants will kill most bacteria found in the home, you may wonder whether using them is worth the risk and expense. Harsh chemical ingredients in disinfectants can be dangerous if ingested, particularly for children, and may cause skin and respiratory problems. Many people look to natural solutions to kill bacteria. For most households, natural disinfectants are a safe and efficient alternative to chemical disinfectants.

Instructions

    1

Fill a clean spray bottle with straight vinegar or create a mixture with water. A 5 percent solution of vinegar, found in most supermarkets, kills 99 percent of all bacteria, according to Annie B. Bond on Care2. For best results, spray the infected area and let the vinegar sit overnight before wiping down. The smell will dissipate after a few hours.

    2

Mix hydrogen peroxide and water in equal parts in a clean spray bottle. The bottle should be opaque because light will break down hydrogen peroxide. If the bottle is not opaque, store it in a dark place, such as under the sink. Then check the mixture for bubbles before using to ensure the hydrogen peroxide is still active. Hydrogen peroxide has been recognized as an effective disinfectant by the Environmental Protection Agency since 1977. Spray the mixture on a hard, nonporous surface and let it sit for several hours before wiping away.

    3

Shake baking soda onto the infected area and let it sit for several hours before wiping away. Another option is to mix baking soda with water, then use the mixture to scrub down infected areas.

    4

Keep spray bottles of hydrogen peroxide and vinegar handy to disinfect counters and food, such as vegetables and fruit. Spray vinegar on the surface first, then spray on hydrogen peroxide (or vice versa). Rinse thoroughly with water.

Proper Setting of Tens Units

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a method for treating pain. A TENS machine is a small, portable device that uses electrical signals to mitigate pain. The device has a small, battery-powered control box that allows you to set the intensity and the width of the pulses. In order to know what setting you need to use, you will have to actually apply the device in practice.

Use the Device

Hooking up the TENS unit is simple and only takes a minute. The TENS unit comes with two or three pairs of electrode patches that are applied to clean, dry skin. By peeling the electrodes off of their plastic protectors, you can stick them on the skin at the point of pain. Keep the plastic backing off the electrode so that you can reuse it to keep the pad clean.

Depending on what type of pain you have, the electrodes should cover or surround the area in pain. Your doctor should advise you where to place your electrodes. Before plugging the electrodes into the device, be sure the switches are all set to the "Off" position. Plug the electrodes into the device and turn the switches to the "On" position. This will start the flow of electric pulses. Turning the knobs for the intensity, width and rate will allow you to adjust the pulses until you reach one that is comfortable and relieving your pain. The width indicates the range around the electrodes in which the pulses will travel. The rate indicates how fast the pulses are. The knobs on the top of the device are for the intensity of each channel. The intensity will determine how sharp the impulses feel. Adjusting the knobs until you find a comfortable pulse is the only strategy you can use to properly set your device on your own. The TENS unit should not be causing you pain, but you should feel the pules. Once you get used to that comfortable setting, you may need to turn up the intensity of the pulses to relieve pain again.

You should only be using your TENS unit under medical supervision. Your doctor can advise you to a more specific setting if you have not found one that is comfortable for your pain. A physical therapist can also help you find the correct setting for your pain. Do not use a TENS unit if you are pregnant, have open cuts or wounds in the areas where the electrodes are placed, if you have epilepsy or cancer. You should not use a TENS unit while driving. Do not place the electrodes on the front of your neck, on the top or side of your head, on your eyes and mouth, or over your heart and throat.

Creative Uses for Yogurt

Creative Uses for Yogurt

Yogurt contains "good" bacteria called probiotics. Probiotics aid digestion and immune function. Yogurt also contains animal proteins, calcium, potassium, magnesium and vitamins B-2 and B-12. While it is proven that eating yogurt promotes general health and well being, there are many unexpected topical uses for yogurt.

Acne

Use yogurt to combat acne. Rub 1 tsp. of plain yogurt onto a freshly-washed and dried face as if applying lotion. Allow for the yogurt to completely absorb into your skin. With continual use, your skin will feel tighter and blemishes should disappear.

Yeast Infection

Treat a yeast infection with yogurt instead of costly over-the-counter medicine. Coat a tampon with plain, unpasteurized, unsweetened yogurt before insertion. Keep the tampon in for a couple of hours and repeat the process. Use the yogurt dipped tampons for up to five days, or until symptoms disappear. Douching regularly with a mixture of yogurt and water also can help combat a yeast infection.

Dandruff

Cure dandruff build-up with yogurt. Wash your hair and apply one cup of plain yogurt to your scalp. Leave the yogurt to soak into your scalp for 15 minutes and then rinse thoroughly. Repeat the process over several days and your dandruff should disappear.

Toenail Fungus

Fight toenail fungus with yogurt. Rub plain yogurt onto an infected toenail. Let the yogurt soak into the nail overnight. Repeat the yogurt application until the fungus is gone.

Sunburn Treatment

Relieve painful sunburns by applying 1/2 cup of plain yogurt directly onto the burned area. Mix aloe vera into the yogurt to aid pain relief.

How to Make Boric Acid Suppositories

How to Make Boric Acid Suppositories

A well-known remedy for vaginal yeast infections is to use boric acid suppositories. Boric acid may be beneficial for yeast infections because it has antifungal and antiviral properties. There are various creams and prescribed oral medications used to treat this infection. However, many women may use boric acid suppositories as an alternative treatment.

Instructions

    1

Buy boric acid powder and gelatin capsules in a pharmacy or online (see the Resources). These capsules usually can hold 540 to 1090 milligrams of the powder.

    2

Pour some boric acid powder into a clean bowl.

    3

Wear plastic gloves or use clean hands to open one capsule into two halves. One of the halves will be larger. Since this capsule's use is as a vaginal suppository, keep everything as hygienic as possible.

    4

Take the larger halve of the capsule, and scoop up some powder from the bowl. Top the filled half of the capsule with the other half, and close it.

    5

Repeat Steps 3 and 4 to fill as many suppositories as you need. You can also make boric acid suppositories using a capsule-filling machine, which you can buy online (see the Resources).

Do Detox Footbaths Really Work?

Detox foot baths are advertised all over the Internet as having the ability to cleanse the entire body of toxins. These claims are enthusiastically made by the manufacturers, but there is no solid, clinical evidence or study to prove them true. Many people dismiss these foot baths as scams that are actually ripping people off their hard-earned money. However, there are others who believe that the detox foot baths make a difference in their overall health, and continue to use them.

Manufacturers' Claims

Manufacturers of the detox foot baths claim that the baths use negative and positive ions to stimulate the body's cells and cleanse them of any negative and harmful toxins. Moreover, the ions supposedly rebalance cellular energy and causes cells to perform better. The toxins are supposedly removed through the pores of the feet. When the toxins are released, the water in the foot bath turns a reddish-brown, which is viewed as evidence of the toxins leaving the body, and definitive proof that the foot bath works.

Manufacturers also claim that by removing these toxins, the foot baths help to treat fatigue, headaches, skin conditions, minor aches and pains and certain kidney diseases.

Clinical Evidence

There are no conclusive laboratory studies that back up any of the manufacturers' claims on detox foot baths. Thus, the product is largely viewed as a scam that is no more useful than putting one's feet in warm water. According to Dr. Andrew Weil and Dr. Stephen Barrett, the claims made by proponents of the detox foot baths are ridiculous and have no basis in truth. Dr. Barrett says that the claims simply don't make any sense because the skin has no ability to remove toxins, which makes the entire point of the foot bath moot.

Some people suspect that the color change in the water is not caused by the release of toxins, but by the release of iron from the device. Ben Goldacre, a reporter for the British newspaper the Guardian Unlimited, conducted a study in which he tested the water after it had changed color and found that it had developed its brownish color due to iron, and not due to any removed toxins. The rust from the iron probably came from the nails in the device.

In conclusion, various doctors and independent studies have confirmed that detox foot baths do not actually remove any toxins from the body as manufacturers claim, and thus they do not work. The body has natural ways of detoxifying itself. The kidneys are the major organs serving this function.

Herbal Treatments for Itching

For some people, itching is more than a skin irritation: It can be a sign of a chronic condition. Because scratching can make an itch worse and can even lead to an infection, herbal remedies can be attempted.

Causes

Common causes of itching are dry skin, skin inflammations from allergies or sunburns, pregnancy, eczema, parasitic infections, insect bites and a reaction to strong chemicals like detergents.

Prevention

Avoid dry skin by moisturizing after baths and showers. Heat and humidity can cause moisture and sweat that can make you itch even more. Always wear sunscreen when outdoors and wear gloves when cleaning or handling chemicals. Check with your doctor about allergy medications or infections. Avoid tight clothes at night.

Home Treatments

There are many home treatments you can try, including:

Taking a peppermint bath. Peppermint will alleviate the itch and also help you relax.
Using Vicks vapor rub for quick relief on small areas that itch.
Mixing equal amounts of cinnamon and honey to make a paste and applying it to itchy areas.
Putting two cups of oatmeal into a bathtub filled with lukewarm water.
Mixing apple cider vinegar with water and rinsing the itchy areas. Two teaspoons of the vinegar can be added to your bath, or you can pour one cup of white vinegar in bath water and soak for five to 10 minutes.
Putting aloe vera or cod liver oil on itchy spots.
Trying a salt-free diet and adding foods with vitamins E and C, beta-carotene and zinc.
Covering the area with a paste made from coconut oil and lime juice.
Applying vitamin E oil to the itch.
Mixing baking soda with water to make a paste to apply to affected skin.
    Applying a cold compress.
Mixing aloe vera, cod liver oil, lemon juice, vitamin E oil and wheat germ oil and putting it on the affected areas.
Bathing or wiping the area with evaporated milk.

Flaxseed for Menopause

Hot flashes are an uncomfortable symptom for many women going through menopause. Regular use of flaxseed may provide relief from these episodes, although it may not have much effect on other symptoms of menopause.

Significance

Flaxseed, as the name implies, is the seed of the flax plant. It contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids and lignans, which are fibrous phytoestrogens. In the digestive tract, bacteria change lignans into hormone-like compounds that mimic estrogen in the body. During menopause, when estrogen levels are declining, replacing or augmenting estrogen with phytoestrogens can lessen symptoms such as hot flashes.

Treatment

Traditionally, hormone replacement therapy has been an oft-prescribed treatment for menopause symptoms, and in particular hot flashes. But with unwanted side effects such as increased risk of heart disease and breast cancer, many women want an alternative solution. Nonhormonal solutions such as chasteberry and wild yam, or black cohosh and soy are available but are not always effective.

Research

The Mayo Clinic conducted a study of 29 women who were having hot flashes at a rate of 14 per week but were not taking estrogen replacements. The women took 40 grams of ground flaxseed every day for six weeks. At the end of the study, they reported a 50 percent reduction in hot flashes. Dr. Sandhya Pruthi, who conducted the study, concluded that flaxseed looked promising as a treatment for this symptom.

Diet

To incorporate ground flaxseed into your diet, aim for the equivalent of 30 grams a day. Start by taking just 2 tablespoons per day, added to baked goods, yogurts, cereal and smoothies. After three weeks, increase the dosage to 2 tablespoons twice a day. For supplementation using the flaxseed capsules, take capsules to equal 1,300 milligrams per day.

Considerations

Side effects from flaxseed can include bloating and gas. Make sure to drink plenty of liquids with ground flaxseed supplementation as it can swell and possibly block the esophagus. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions about adding flaxseed to your diet.

Side Effects of Whole Flaxseed

Side Effects of Whole Flaxseed

Adding flaxseed to you diet may provide health benefits; however, side effects do exist for flax seed, and whole flaxseeds may not be digested appropriately. Understanding the potential side effects, as well as how to obtain the maximum benefit from flaxseeds, can help you determine if flaxseed is right for you.

Identification

Grown throughout Canada and northwestern United States, flaxseed is simply the seed from the flax plant. Flaxseed supplements can come in whole or crushed form, and flaxseed oil is available in liquid or capsule form.

Theories/Speculation

According to the Mayo Clinic, it's important to grind flaxseeds, as the whole seed may pass through the digestive tract without being digested. Grinding the flaxseed before consuming it means that you'll get more nutrition and benefit from the seed.

Side Effects of Flaxseed

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine says that, overall flaxseed supplements are generally well-tolerated. Flaxseed may cause constipation or intestinal blockage if it's not taken with an adequate amount of water. Because flaxseed contains high amounts of fiber, consider starting it a low dose and increasing it slowly. This may help to ward off uncomfortable intestinal side effects.

Also, NCCAM says that the fiber in flaxseed could stop or limit the absorption of other supplements and medications, so don't take anything else at the same time as the flaxseed.

Benefits

NCCAM says that flaxseeds contain soluble fiber and are high in omega-3 fatty acids. Though NCCAM says there's not enough data to definitively say, some studies do suggest that the alpha-linolenic acid found in flaxseeds could benefit those with heart disease. NCCAM is also currently researching other studies on the benefits of flaxseeds.

According to the Mayo Clinic, flaxseed may help reduce total blood cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels; however, the NCCAM says that studies on the effects of flaxseed and cholesterol have reported mixed results.

Flax oil or Flaxseed?

Though flaxseed oil is an excellent source of alpha-linolenic acid, it is missing many of the health benefits of actual ground flaxseeds. The fiber found in the seed isn't present in the oil, though the omega-3 essential fatty acids are. Also, NCCAM says that flaxseed contains lignans, but flaxseed oil does not.

How to Train for Preventative Maintenance

How to Train for Preventative Maintenance

Machinery breakdowns cost industry millions of dollars each year. Not only from loss of production, but from the labor and materials used to repair the equipment to an operational state. During the heat of repairs to restart production, the failed machine is only patched, and all too often not repaired. A run-to-failure maintenance policy is the most costly maintenance program in existence. Preventive maintenance (PM) programs, however, have the ability to reduce, if not eliminate, costly failures. Training maintenance staff, machine operators, and management, is critical to implementing an effective PM program.

Instructions

    1

Select key staff for involvement in the discovery and training phase of preventative maintenance. This group will attend initial training and development for the preventative maintenance program. They will also serve as a future advisory committee for continuous development of the PM plan.

    2

Attend reliability maintenance seminars that focus on maintenance prevention. Organizations such as the Society of Maintenance and Reliability Professionals, IDCON, and Reliasoft, offer courses and seminars around the country throughout the year.

    3

Assess your business needs and what level of PM its machinery requires. There is no one-size-fits-all PM program to fit every industry and company. Based on the principals and fundamentals from conferences and seminars, choose the topics and practices that best fit your organization and will achieve the company's goals.

    4

Schedule equipment specific training for technicians and operators. Thorough knowledge of the equipment being maintained is as valuable as the PM program itself. If knowledge gaps exist between what the maintenance staffs knows and the technical information necessary to maintain a piece of equipment, send the affected technicians to training.

    5

Hire a consultant to aid the on-site training and to survey progress. While this is not mandatory for a preventative maintenance training program, the amount of time required to achieve the level of knowledge necessary to carry out an effective PM program is substantially reduced.

Experiments to See If Yawning Is Contagious

Experiments to See If Yawning Is Contagious

Yawning is one of the many things all humans, and animals for that matter, have in common. It's a function of the body that has perplexed scientists for years. Some believe yawning is a sign of boredom or tiredness and until recently, experts agreed the primary function of yawning was to replinish oxygen to the blood stream. The subject is so puzzling and becomes even more confusing when the question of yawning being contagious comes into play.

Theory Disproving Contagious Yawning

The notion of yawns being contagious is an idea some would discount. Gordon Gallup, University at Albany psychology professor, suggests yawing is a way for people to cool off their brains -- not the result of witnessing someone else do it. Gallup said, brains are like computers, they only operate efficiently when they're cool; therefore, yawning serves as a cooling mechanism that regulates the temperature of the brain. "Many things like being tired, actually make the brain hot, and yawning can allievate the heat," says Gallup.

Experiement 1

One theory suggests yawns work like air conditioners for the brain.
One theory suggests yawns work like air conditioners for the brain.

Professor Gordon Gallup tested his theory with a group of students. They were asked to watch a film of other people yawning. Some of the students held a cold compress to their heads and others held a warm compress in the same way. The cold compress participants were also asked to breath in and out through their nose -- a natural brain coolant. These students did not yawn at all, but the warm compress students were far more likely to yawn.

Theory Approving Contagious Yawning

Not everyone can catch a contagious yawn
Not everyone can catch a contagious yawn

Other researchers believe yawning is contagious and a sign of empathy, as well as a form of social bonding. Research suggests contagious yawning starts around age 4 and continues throughout life, but not everyone is susceptible to it. Only about 40 to 60 percent of people are likely to catch a contagious yawn. The exact reason for contagious yawning is still unknown, although some scientists think a person's mental state plays a major role.

Experiment 2

Studies show that people who are self-aware are more likely to catch a contagious yawn.
Studies show that people who are self-aware are more likely to catch a contagious yawn.

Dr. Steven Platek and a team of researchers, from the Department of Psychology at the State University of New York, tested a group of students to prove contagious yawning does occur among individuals who are self-aware and have the ability to see things from someone else's point of view. First, Dr. Platek asked the participants to take a personality questionnaire -- this test identified students' social behaviors and perceptions. Then, they watched a series of videos of people yawning, laughing, or showing no behavior. The yawning videos caused students to yawn 41 percent of the time.

Benefits of L Carnosine

L-carnosine helps increase longevity. It's comprised of two important amino acids (alanine and histidine) that the body needs. L-carnosine is a powerful antioxidant that can decrease disease and the aging process. When people are younger, they have a substantial amount of L-carnosine in their bodies. However, as they grow older, the L-carnosine levels decrease. L-carnosine can be taken as a dietary supplement or found in fish, red meat and poultry.

Decreases Free Radical Damage

Free radicals from environmental factors such as smoke and pollution can damage the body's cells. L-carnosine can decrease free radical damage by reducing protein and DNA cellular changes. It can also slow down the process of glycosylation (when proteins and sugars abnormally combine together). Free radical damage could lead to heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and premature skin damage.

Helps Children with Autism and Epilepsy

L-carnosine has been linked to improving neurological disorders such as autism and epilepsy found in children. It stimulates brain functions associated with speech, learning and emotions. Children who increased L-carnosine in their daily diets showed improved language/speech development and auditory processing.

Improves Heart Conditions

For people who suffer from heart conditions, L-carnosine can improve heart functions. It helps strengthens the tissue associated with the heart muscle. For patients who suffer from heart related conditions such as heart disease or hypertension, they should add more L-carnosine to their daily diets.

Improves Eye Health

L-carnosine is found within the eye tissue. With age, L-carnosine decreases. Patients who suffer from cataracts or other eye-related medical conditions can benefit from higher doses of L-carnosine. Eye drops with L-carnosine have been found to decrease cataracts in seniors.

Heals Wounds

L-carnosine helps repair connective tissue which promotes wound healing. Patients with severe skin wounds should take L-carnosine supplements to expedite skin healing. L-carnosine also has antioxidant properties which helps the body heal faster and decreases the risk of wound infection.

Warnings

Pregnant women, children or patients suffering from serious medical condtions should consult a medical doctor before taking L-carnosine. L-carnosine supplements can also cause allergic reactions in some patients.

Herbal Remedies as Antibiotics

Why not use home remedies as antibiotics for minor health issues instead of spending money and time going to the doctor? Natural antibiotics help stimulate the immune system and remove bacteria and toxins causing your illness. There are usually no side effects, and most are safe and effective for use in both children and adults when taken as directed. Read the guide below for a few suggestions to use home remedies as antibiotics.

Honey

Take 1 tsp. of raw honey 3 times a day to stimulate and strengthen the immune system naturally. Pregnant women and children under age 3 should not take raw honey, as it can contain bacteria.

Grapefruit Seed Extract

Studies have shown that grapefruit seed extract contains a natural antibiotic known as Citricidal. Grapefruit seed extract is generally considered safe for both children and pregnant or nursing women.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic. Studies have shown that using tea tree oil can fight off many antibiotic resistant bacteria and viruses.

Colloidal Silver

Colloidal silver is a natural antibiotic that has the power to kill more than 650 disease organisms. Children and adults should take it as directed on the packaging.

Garlic

Many studies have shown that garlic is a powerful, natural antibiotic. Add it to your recipes, or eat whole garlic up to 3 times a day.

Apple Cider Vinegar

According to Hippocrates, apple cider vinegar is "a naturally occurring antibiotic and antiseptic that fights germs and bacteria." Take 2 tsp. of apple cider vinegar mixed with 8 oz. of water up to 3 times daily for overall health benefits.

Golden Seal

Studies have shown that golden seal helps fight infection and kill bacteria. Consult your physician if you have hypertension before using golden seal, as it may affect your symptoms. You should also consult a pediatrician before giving children golden seal.

Does Green Tea Detox Your Body?

Does Green Tea Detox Your Body?

The drinking of tea leaves steeped in boiling water goes back at least 5,000 years to India and China, where ancient cultures cultivated tea plants. A University of Maryland study reports that China, India, Japan and Thailand have consumed green tea and used it for medicinal purposes for centuries. Green tea has grown in popularity in recent years as a mild alternative to coffee and strong teas, as well as for its healing qualities, now documented in studies.

The Facts

Camellia sinensis is the tea plant from which all teas derive. Of the black, oolong and green tea groups, green is the only one made from unfermented leaves and the least processed, leaving more polyphenols, tea's antioxidant chemicals, intact. These polyphenols fall into six main catechin compounds, the subject of much research. Green tea has the lowest caffeine level as well.

Traditional medicinal uses of green tea in India and China include drinking it as a stimulant and diuretic, to heal wounds, for heart health, as a digestion aid and for mental clarity.

Detox Agent

Our bodies produce free radicals---unstable molecules or oxidants---that "damage cell proteins and genetic material," making the body "vulnerable to cancer," according to the National Cancer Institute. Catechins (antioxidants) deter free radicals' enzyme and DNA damage that sometimes leads to cancer.

Green tea's detoxifying properties have links to weight reduction and fat burning, and they can fight bacteria, liver disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, atherosclerosis and inflammatory bowel disease.

Drink two to three cups of green tea per day for the recommended amount of polyphenols, or take 100 to 750 mg of green tea extract. Choose decaffeinated products if you prefer to avoid the buzz.

Cancer Studies

The University of Arizona studied 42 healthy volunteers who took daily doses of "green tea polyphenol intervention" for four weeks. The result showed an increased level of GST in blood, "providing beneficial detoxifying enzymes to the subjects."

China and Japan have lower rates of cancer than those seen in the United States, sparking interest and studies by the National Cancer Institute of the capsule form of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) found in green tea.

Bacterial Studies

Egyptian researchers presented evidence at the Society for General Microbiology that green tea boosts the effectiveness of antibiotics, up to three times, even against so-called "superbugs." It even helps antibiotics beat drug-resistant bacteria. Also, catechins themselves restrain bacterial enzyme growth, researchers from the National Institute of Chemistry in Ljubljana, Slovenia, discovered, justifying the ancient tea-drinking tradition.

Cautions

Consider a few side effects along with the good. Even the low level of caffeine may affect some people adversely, especially if combined with other caffeine products. Don't give tea to infants. Avoid green tea if you are pregnant or breast- feeding or if you have anxiety or problematic heart, kidney or stomach conditions. Consult with a doctor for interactions with prescriptions and chemotherapy. Studies are ongoing and not conclusive at this time.

How to Treat Canker Sores With Sauerkraut

How to Treat Canker Sores With Sauerkraut

The cause of canker sores is unknown but they seem to signal an imbalance in the body. They can be triggered by stress, menstrual cycles, poor nutrition, food allergies or too much candy. Follow these steps to treat canker sores with sauerkraut.

Instructions

    1

Purchase sauerkraut juice. If you can't find it in a store, purchase it online.

    2

Buy sauerkraut if you can't find any sauerkraut juice or it's too expensive. Drain the juice from the sauerkraut or just dip a tablespoon in it as you need it.

    3

Use about a tablespoon of sauerkraut juice. Swish it around your mouth for about 30 seconds and swallow it.

    4

Rinse your mouth with sauerkraut juice at least two or three times a day. Your canker sores should clear up in about a week.

    5

Eat foods with sauerkraut for added benefit. Some of these foods include Reuben sandwiches, hot dogs with sauerkraut or sauerkraut and bratwurst.

Herbal Cures for High Cholesterol

Cholesterol occurs naturally in the body. It is often viewed as a bad substance, but it serves important functions ranging from hormone production to nerve function. When the body's use of this substance is disturbed, or if levels become too high, that is when it can become problematic. High cholesterol can lead to atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, mental impairment, gallstones, stroke and heart attack. There are herbal treatments which can increase HDL or "good" cholesterol and decrease LDL or "bad" cholesterol. They often take at least a couple of months of use to effect change, so consistency is important.

Herbal Treatments

Artichoke leaf reduces overall cholesterol and triglycerides (a form of fat) and raises HDL. Take 1,500 mg daily for at least 6 weeks.

Asafoetida reduces total cholesterol increased by excess fat in the diet. Take 1 tsp. of powder daily.

Cordyceps lowers LDL and raises HDL. Take 1,000 mg daily.

Dioscorea, also known as wild yam, raises HDL. Take tincture as directed on the label.

Garlic enteric-coated capsules lower total cholesterol in the body. Take 900 mg daily for 3 to 4 months.

Ginseng lowers LDL and triglyceride levels. Take the tincture as directed on the label.

Green tea lowers LDL and raises HDL. Drink two to five cups daily.

Guggul raises HDL. Take 25 mg three times a day for 3 to 4 months.

Hawthorn assists the liver with conversion of LDL to HDL. Take 100 to 250 mg three times a day.

Milk thistle maintains general liver health and helps with conversion of LDL to HDL. Take 300 mg every day.

Shiitake mushroom eaten whole lowers LDL and raises HDL. Eat three to six grams daily.

Herbs and pharmaceutical agents are assigned suggested doses based on their therapeutic range. This refers to the range from the smallest dose that provides any benefit to the largest dose that is safe for consumption. Herbs are generally nontoxic, and serious complications or overdose is unlikely. However, you should stick to suggested amounts, as taking more is not likely to produce additional benefit and can potentially cause negative side effects.

Coconut Oil for Bladder & Staph Infections

Coconuts are classified by the Coconut Research Center as a "functional food" because they are both a food source and have medicinal health benefits. The center indicates medical journal research now demonstrates coconut (in some form) kills a variety of viruses, bacteria, fungus and yeast infections, including staph and bladder infections. Coconut Oil Central lists the staphylococcus bacteria that causes both staph and bladder infections as one that is neutralized by coconut oil's medium-chain fatty acidsor MCFA.

Medium-chain fatty acids or medium-chain triglyceridesMCTmake up 92 percent of coconut oil, according to the OrganicFacts.net. Those acids aren't found in many of our food sources but they are important because they help protect us from heart disease and antherosclerosis. Organic Facts points out that among the medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil it is mainly lauric acid, caprylic acid and capric acid that provide the antifungal, antibacterial, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.

Additional Benefits

The antioxidant properties of coconut oil can protect the skin from losing elasticity and strength.

Humans metabolize fatty acids differently depending on the size of the "carbon chain" within each fatty acid. Medium-chain fatty acids are more easily assimilated or metabolized and put to healthy use in the body, notes Organic Facts. So even though coconut oil is a saturated fat, it provides digestive health and soothes bowel issues, protects the skin from irritation, drying and aging and works as an antioxidant to the system without contributing to higher cholesterol.

Components

Besides its healthy medium-chain fatty acids, coconut oil also contains polyunsaturated fatty acid (linoleic acid) and mono-unsaturated fatty acid (oleic acid), points out Organic Facts. In addition, coconut oil is a good source of vitamin K, vitamin E and iron. And finally, polyphenols like gallic acid are found in coconut oil, providing another level of health protection that counteracts the environmental free-radicals that can cause tissue damage in the body.

Misconceptions

Unlike animal fats, coconut oil comes from a plant source, so it has no cholesterolwith which to increase cholesterol in the blood.

Because coconut oil is a saturated fat, some people believe it's unhealthy, clogging arteries and increasing cholesterol. But according to CoconutOil.com, researcher Emil V. Carandang of the Philippine Coconut Research and Development Foundation, notes that a U.S. fresh/raw coconut oil study found coconut oil does not cause an increase in the actual cholesterol. It did show, however, that it increased good cholesterol levels and decreased bad cholesterol levels, positively impacting existing cholesterol.

How to Treat Chapped Lips Using Home Remedies

How to Treat Chapped Lips Using Home Remedies

Chapped lips hurt when smiling, eating, drinking and just about anything to do with moving your lips. Chapped lips are more common in the winter months because of the low humidity. Our lips lack the natural oil our skin makes to protect against dry skin. Just by trying to grin or smile when your lips are chapped can crack and hurt lips.

Instructions

    1

Use a lip balm with sunscreen in it. The sun can dry out our lips as well as our skin so using a lip balm with sunscreen will help treat chapped lips and prevent chapped lips from occurring.

    2

Wear a creamy lipstick or lip gloss every day. The creamy lipstick or lip gloss helps soothe the lips when they are chapped. Lipstick or lip gloss can also prevent chapped lips because it is opaque and helps filter out harsh light.

    3

Drink plenty of fluids every day to moisturize your lips from the inside out. Drinking several ounces of water every few hours can soothe chapped lips and prevent chapped lips in the first place.

    4

Apply zinc oxide to your lips every night before bed. Many people tend to drool in their sleep which can irritate chapped lips and cause chapped lips. Zinc oxide acts as a barrier and protects the lips from chapping from drool.

    5

Apply bag balm to your lips that is normally used by farmers to soothe the udders of a cow. Apply it to your lips for 1 to 2 days and it should help soothe chapped lips. Bag balm can be found at farm supply stores, vet supply stores, some pharmacies and health food stores.

    6

Take a little bit of olive oil, enough to fill a shot glass, and apply it to your lips every day until the chapped lips are healed. You can keep using it as long as you want to prevent chapped lips from returning. You can also rub the fleshy side of a tomato on your lips if they are really chapped. This may sting a little so use it with caution.

    7

Put a little bit of sugar on a half of a lemon and rub it on your lips. Apply glycerin after doing this to keep lips moisturized. This is a simple yet effective remedy.

How to Use Primrose Oil to Treat Acne

How to Use Primrose Oil to Treat Acne

Many factors can cause acne, such as stress, pregnancy, hormonal changes and diet. Adolescents are particularly prone to suffer from acne as their bodies change. Primrose oil can either be consumed or applied topically to help treat the condition.

Instructions

    1

Use primrose oil to combat acne. You can use it consistently to maintain good skin or only during occasional outbreaks, such as those associated with menstruation or stress.

    2

Consider making a topical formula on your own. The diced or ground leaves can be combined with petroleum jelly to treat acne topically. Keep the formual tightly covered and refrigerate to maintain effectiveness.

    3

Buy tablets or capsules in pharmacies, health food stores and major supermarkets. Pay special attention to the expiration date. Primrose oil will degenerate over time and effectiveness will suffer.

    4

Wait patiently. Primrose oil is a mild, natural alternative and many people do not notice immediate results. You must use it for at least 2 weeks to see any improvement, which will increase with regular use.

    5

Use primrose oil to treat other skin inflammations. Eczema, ruddiness, dry or sensitive skin can also be soothed with the use of primrose oil.

    6

Start gradually. Initially, it's recommended that people with sensitive skin follow a minimal use of primrose oil until the body adjusts to it. This is true with both topical and ingested formulas.

Herbal Remedies for Anxiety and Irritability

Herbal Remedies for Anxiety and Irritability

General practitioners have been touting anxiety as the most commonly reported mental health symptom in recent decades. It is reported much more frequently than depression and all other mental health symptoms combined. The cause is unknown, but many have speculated that our fast-paced society and increased stress has caused an epidemic of new anxiety sufferers. Those individuals who are opposed to taking prescription medication for anxiety do not have to suffer silently. There are alternative choices for anxiety treatment.

Types

There are several types of herbal remedies that have been touted as effective natural treatments for anxiety. For centuries, western medicine practitioners have administered natural herbs such as kava kava and valerian root to successfully treat and alleviate symptoms of anxiety and irritability.

Benefits

The benefits of using a natural, herbal remedy for anxiety is that the side effect profile is likely to be much better than for prescription medications. One disadvantage of prescription medications is that they are synthetic, and our body doesn't recognize certain compounds. This is the chief cause of side effects.

Theories/Speculation

The calming and anti-anxiety benefits of herbal medications are thought to be caused by the relaxing effects on the central nervous system. By slowing down nerve impulses, it is thought to have calming properties that induce a state of relaxation.

History

The use of herbs for disease and symptom control has been around for hundreds of years. In fact, most pharmaceuticals have been created by studying the structure and effects of natural herbs on the human body. Many prescription medications are simply synthetic versions of naturally-occurring plants and herbs.

Warning

Before beginning any natural herbal supplement, please discuss this with your general healthcare practitioner. Herbal remedies can also cause drug interactions in the same manner as prescription medications. Use caution with herbal remedies as much as you would any other medication, and always consult your doctor beforehand.
