Facts on Doses of Colloidal Silver

Facts on Doses of Colloidal Silver

Colloidal silver has been used for centuries as an anti-microbial medication. It fell into relative disuse after the discovery of antibiotics. In the past, colloidal silver was used as a disinfectant and germicide for eye problems, various infections and as an internal medicine. Colloidal silver is made by suspending silver particles in a liquid medium in which the microscopic particles remain distinct and do not go into solution.

Resurgence in Use

The recent upsurge in microbes that have developed resistance to various antibiotics has resulted in a resurgence in the use of colloidal silver as an anti-microbial and antibiotic. Because of how it works, colloidal silver does not trigger the mutations in microbes that can result in resistance. Another advantage: colloidal silver can be toxic to a number of microbes without being toxic to the person taking the medication.

Water Disinfectant

Colloidal silver has been used for centuries to purify water. In fact, both NASA and the Russian space program implement colloidal silver water purification in their space programs. Many airlines also use colloidal silver filtration on airplanes to prevent waterborne disease in their planes' water systems.

Horticultural Uses

Colloidal silver can help prevent plant disease, although its high cost makes its widespread use more difficult. By adding colloidal silver to water, various microbial-related plant diseases can be prevented. In addition, adding colloidal silver to cut flowers can extend their lifespan.

Claims of Disease Treatment

Many websites and colloidal silver manufacturers make unsubstantiated claims about the effectiveness of colloidal silver on various diseases. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports no evidence of colloidal silver being effective as a treatment for any disease or condition.

Adverse Effects

Taking excessive amounts of colloidal silver can result in the buildup of excessive silver in the body. This condition is called argyria. Argyria causes a blue-gray discoloration of the skin and other organs, including fingernails and gums. Argyria is permanent and cannot be reversed. In addition, excessive colloidal silver can cause kidney damage, stomach discomfort, fatigue and skin irritation.

Because of these potential side effects, it is best to consult a medical professional about dosage before taking colloidal silver.

Sweet Oil for Earaches in Children

Sweet Oil for Earaches in Children

Many cooks have sweet oil in their home to enhance recipes and some even use it as a skin softener. Sweet oil is commonly referred to olive oil. Many moms have found that sweet oil has a surprising use --- as a way to ease the discomfort of earaches in children.

Earaches are Common

Earaches are a common complaint in children. According to Familydoctor.org, before their first birthday most children will have had at least one ear infection. Most of them are caused when fluid doesn't drain properly out of the eustachian tubes in the middle ear. The tubes in children are smaller, and this may cause children to have more earaches than adults. If the fluid does not drain, it could cause an infection in the ear.

What Experts Say

While the medical community does not specifically state "sweet oil" is a remedy for childhood earaches, they do recommend olive oil, which is similar. WebMD lists sweet oil as a drug but doesn't give any details. The site urges readers to consult a pharmacy. Some experts do say that sweet oil may temporarily reduce the pain of an earache. However, it is recommended the parents take their child to the doctor to make sure there is no infection.

How to Apply

Sweet oil can be purchased with a dropper so it is easy to put the oil in the children's ears. Only a couple of drops are needed in each ear to be effective in reducing the pain. It is recommended that the oil be warm to be most effective. If the sweet oil does not come with a dropper, one can be purchased at a pharmacy. The biggest problem for parents may be getting the children to stay still long enough for the drops to be inserted.

Other Uses

While medical experts caution against using sweet oil as the sole remedy for earaches, there are other uses for the product, particularly when it comes to solving common children's conditions. Cradle cap, where a baby's head becomes dry and scaly, may be relieved by sweet oil. Sweet oil may also help get rid of lice. Olive oil is also recommended in a healthy diet since it contains the "good" kind of fats. The Mayo Clinic recommends that sweet oil be used within six month to a year of being opened since it can lose some of its health benefits over time.

How to Make a Natural Refreshing Breath Spray

Gotta love that garlic! Chowed down on hot peppers or that wonderful pepperoni pizza? Unfortunately, as good as they taste, these and many other foods can give you bad breath. If you prefer not to use a commercial breath spray, and want to go with something natural and refreshing, natural essential oil-based breath sprays are ideal. There are a variety of different formulas that you can create to freshen your breath. Here are the steps to make two of them.

Instructions

    1

Buy honey, preferably a local variety if available. Local honey has the added benefit of helping you build up resistance to local pollens.

    2

Choose 100 percent pure essential oils as only these offer healthful benefits. The label will state "100% pure." You can find them at health food stores and online. Dont use synthetic oils because they do not have the same benefits.

    3

Choose which formula you prefer based on what you like to smell and taste. Formula 1 uses lemon and lavender essential oils. Formula 2 uses cinnamon and orange essential oils.

    4

Prepare the breath spray bottle. Fill the bottle with 4 fluid ounces (or 120 ml) of purified water.

    5

Add the oils for Formula 1. To the water, add 10 drops each of lemon and of lavender essential oil. Add 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) of honey. Cap the bottle and shake well to mix ingredients. Go to Step 7.

How to Detox with Seaweed

How to Detox with Seaweed

Seaweed has long been valued in Asian countries for its nutritional and medicinal qualities, and Western cultures have now embraced it for its health benefits, particularly its ability to cleanse or detox the body. Brown algae, or kelp, is one of the most common types of seaweed which is believed to rid the body of toxins and heavy metals that cause a variety of health problem such as obesity, arthritis and high blood pressure. Rich in minerals like iodine and potassium, seaweed also believed to boost the body's natural immune system and improve thyroid and liver function which also helps with detoxification. Baths, body wraps, seaweed foods and diet supplements are methods used to detox with seaweed.

Instructions

Dextoxing with kelp

    1

Put approximately four ounces of the dried kelp inside a stocking and boil it in a gallon of water for about 30 minutes. Pour the mixture into hot bath water and soak for 30 to 45 minutes. Drinking several glasses of water prior to a seaweed bath is believed to help flush toxins and waste out of the body.

    2

Mix an 8 ounce package of kelp powder, for a a seaweed body wrap, with approximately one cup of water to form a paste similar in consistency to other types of body creams. Apply the paste liberally on all parts of the body and wrap up in several warm, dry towels. Relax for roughly an hour and then shower off the dried paste.

    3

Mix approximately 4 ounces of kelp powder into a paste for wraps targeted for specific parts of the body. In addition to flushing toxins from the body, seaweed is believed to exfoliate and deeply moisturize the skin. It is also credited with reducing the appearance of cellulite. Apply the paste to whichever part of the body is being treated. Wrap with warm towels and relax for one hour before showering.

    4

Soak prepackaged dried kelp in water before cooking it and using it as a part of a diet that helps the body detox. Kelp can be chopped and used as a garnish for soup, or added into a vegetable mix or stew. It can also be cooked and seasoned as a side dish. Kelp is considered a good source of vitamin B and adding it to a diet is another way to take advantage of its ability to detox the body.

    5

Talk to a doctor or health care professional before opting to detox with kelp supplements. The iodine content in kelp supplements can regulate an underactive thyroid which can be the cause of water retention. Flushing out that excess water is a method of detoxing. However, supplements contain different amounts of iodine, and a high levels may harm rather than help thyroid function. Most health food stores carry several different varieties of kelp supplements, but there is no standard preparation and no federally approved daily dosage.

Ingredients for an Herbal Liver Cleanse

Cleansing your liver is an important process, since the liver is the organ responsible for cleaning the body of toxins. Over time, these toxins can build up in the liver, resulting in a less-than-optimal performance, especially if your diet is high in alcohol, drugs or unhealthy foods. Cleansing your liver takes about two weeks, and should be done on a regular basis to help keep your immune system and entire body as healthy as possible. Before starting any cleanse, seek the counsel of your doctor, especially if you have any medical conditions.

Healthy Diet

A healthy diet is one of the most important ingredients of an herbal liver cleanse. You should not only keep up a healthy diet while you are on a cleanse, but also have a healthy diet in general, so that when you cleanse your liver your body is able to handle it better. A proper, healthy diet should consist of as many fresh fruits and vegetables as you can eat, with as little alcohol or other drugs that make the liver have to work extra hard to process and clean out of your body.

Starting the Cleanse

When you first start your cleanse, remove any unhealthy foods from your diet, so that your liver has to work as little as possible. Drink only water for the first few days, and fast lightly, eating only fruits, light salads or other fresh foods. This will give your body the opportunity to rest and relax without having to worry about processing heavy or unhealthy foods. During the entire fast, drink as much water as possible, as this will help your body remove toxins at a rapid pace.

Specific Ingredients

After you finish with your light fast, start by taking capsules of milk thistle, dandelion root, ginger, sarsaparilla, parsley, nettle, yellow dock and kelp once in the morning and once in the evening. During the afternoon, drink tea comprised of dandelion, ginger, peppermint, rosemary and rose hips. These ingredients should be used for the first week of your cleanse. For the second week, you'll need to change your capsule ingredients, and only take dandelion root, milk thistle, ginger, spirulina and kelp. Again, do this once in the morning and once in the evening, and feel free to continue drinking the tea in the afternoons. After the second week of the cleanse is up, return to your normal diet.

What Are the Health Benefits of Psyllium Seed Husks?

Psyllium seed husks, from the plantago ovato, contain a formidable level of soluble dietary fiber. They are a main component of many commercial bulk laxatives. Psyllium, also be found in cereals, can help to lower fats in the blood and promote heart health.

High cholesterol

Psyllium has the capability to lower lipids, or fats, in the body and create small reductions in blood levels of overall cholesterol along with lowering levels of so- called "bad" cholesterol. While psyllium does have a beneficial effect on lowering bad cholesterol, it has little to no effect on good cholesterol, leaving those levels unchanged. Because psyllium is responsible for only small changes in bad cholesterol levels, those with very high cholesterol levels should check with their physician for a stronger or supplemental treatment program.

Laxative

Psyllium has long been associated with use as a bulk-type laxative. This soluble fiber adds bulk and volume to the digestive tract. Psyllium also absorbs a lot of water as it travels through the body, making it imperative to stay hydrated when taking psyllium seed husks--otherwise, a blockage may occur. Take one tablespoon in an 8-ounce glass of water once a day, building up to three doses per day for an optimal effect.

Bulk laxatives serve a dual purpose in the body: first, and most notably, they help to move waste; second, they help to restore a normal balance of bacteria in the intestinal tract, enabling more waste reduction.

Psyllium is available in powder form or can be purchased in bulk in seed form at health food stores. It also comes in capsules that are sold in pharmacies and supplement stores.

Diarrhea

While it may seem contraindicated, psyllium is often used to treat diarrhea. The same bulking action that benefits the body when it is plagued with constipation can help to ease the symptoms of diarrhea. Take a psyllium seed husk product at the first sign of diarrhea for relief of symptoms. Follow dosing instructions on the package.

Hemorrhoids

Psyllium seed husks also have benefits when it comes to treating hemorrhoids. Psyllium can be a powerful ally in the fight against hemorrhoids because it helps to make the stool flow more smoothly out of the body with less resistance. Take 3 grams daily for relief and and to help flush out the gastrointestinal system. Follow dosing instructions carefully. The above dose is for a product such as a bulk laxative.

Weight Loss

Psyllium has shown promise as an effective tool in weight loss. It can help to curb an appetite that is overboard and fill up the stomach prior to a meal. Take between 1 to 2 tablespoons mixed in 8 ounces of water right before meals; take no more than 6 tablespoons per day. Make sure to drink plenty of water with the psyllium to prevent a blockage of the digestive tract. The psyllium acts like a sponge in your stomach and intestines, creating a full feeling. In addition, diets that include high amounts of fiber can reduce the amount of calories that are digested.

How Much Black Salve Do You Put on a Boil?

How Much Black Salve Do You Put on a Boil?

Black salve ointments and remedies have been used since the 1880s for a variety of ailments including cancers, boils, acne and other skin conditions. The "drawing" properties of black salves are often the reasons for their use; black salve is believed to draw out impurities from the skin, eliminating the harmful substances within.

About Black Salve

Black salves are typically made from bloodroot, herbs and zinc chloride. The amounts of these ingredients can vary widely from manufacturer to manufacturer. Use caution when selecting a black salve, and always get medical advice. Black salves with more than 40% zinc chloride can skin corrosion and tissue damage.

Black salve can be packaged in tubes, jars, or other containers, and homemade preparations can also be used. Take caution when concocting these remedies, and be sure to follow recipe instructions precisely.

Applying Black Salve

To apply black salve to a boil, use fingers to apply. Place an even coat over the boil, covering it completely. Spread it over the boil in a thin layer, making sure to cake the paste lightly over the entire area. However, be careful not to apply black salve to large areas of the body; instead, use black salve only in small increments. Too much salve can be corrosive to the skin and toxic to the system.

After applying salve, place a bandage over the affected area and wait for the drawing properties to begin working. A tingling sensation will occur within 24 hours. Remove salve with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide each day, and apply a new coat for 10 to 14 days.

Milk & Honey Cures

Milk & Honey Cures

Each of these products contains its own healing properties, but when combined they are even more beneficial. Whether you want to treat a skin ailment or cure constipation, milk and honey are readily available and easy to mix for a home remedy. According to OrganicFacts.net, using the milk-and-honey combination often packs more of a punch than if you used either one alone.

Skin Problems

The lactic acid in milk works as a gentle exfoliator, while honey has anti-bacterial properties that cleanse and purify skin. Many use a milk-and-honey combination to cure skin ailments such as dry skin. According to FatFreeKitchen.com, milk and honey may both be applied to the skin to restore moisture. One remedy is to mix honey and cold milk together and apply to dry areas of the skin. Mix as much as needed to apply over the area, and allow it to sit for 10 minutes before rising off with lukewarm water.

Constipation

If you suffer from constipation, one natural cure for it is honey and milk, according to MorphemeRemedies.com. Drinking fluid helps to loosen the bowels, and one remedy is to mix a tablespoon of honey with a glass of milk, and drink two times a day. Milk is helpful during constipation because milk is thought to moisten the intestines and honey has a mild laxative effect on the intestines, according to Health911.com.

Lack of Energy

If you feel tired or worn out during the day, drinking a mixture of milk and honey is thought to provide stamina and boost your energy, according to OrganicFacts.net. Milk contains proteins that offer the body fuel, while honey features carbohydrates as a source of energy. According to Champlain Valley Apiaries, one source of simple carbohydrates is raw honey. The honey provides fuel to the muscles for energy, and even though it is a sugar, it has a mild effect on blood sugar levels compared with other carbohydrates. Each of these products also works internally to strengthen bones, help nourish muscle with both their carbs and proteins, and add valuable cleansing properties to the digestive system.

Anxiety Disorder Herbal Medications

Anxiety Disorder Herbal Medications

Successfully administered for thousands of years, herbal medications have stood the test of time. Most popular in Asia, herbal medications have made their way to the United States with impressive results. In some cases, herbal medications have relived their symptoms just as well, if not better, than prescribed medications. With the cost of health care skyrocketing, patients are choosing alternative ways to treat their symptoms, especially when it comes to anxiety disorder.

Identification

Herbal medications are alternatives to manufactured pharmaceutical medications. Derived of plant stems, roots, bark, leaves, flowers and berries, herbal medications are used to naturally heal wounds and relieve the symptoms of illness. Herbal medications help combat psychological disorders such as anxiety.

Potential

Anxiety sufferers often have overwhelming feelings of fear and worry, coupled with nervous feelings that can escalate into feelings of sheer panic. Prescription drugs that treat anxiety can quell the adrenaline rush or 'fight or flight' symptoms of the disorder by blocking certain chemicals in the brain. Herbal medications treat anxiety disorder in the same way, without the synthetic chemicals.

Types

Among the most common types of herbal medications that have been known to counteract the symptoms of anxiety disorder are valerian, Saint John's wort, chamomile and passion flower. Both valerian and chamomile are used to treat anxiety disorders that affect sleep, and are best suited as night time aids. Passion flower and Saint John's wort are both mood stabilizers that relieve nervousness and feelings of restlessness, in addition to alleviating depression symptoms often associated with anxiety. Both the passion flower and Saint John's wort can be taken any time of day.

Considerations

When choosing herbal remedies, consider that there may be a downside to their use. Just as prescription medications can have side effects, so can herbal medications. For instance, although valerian alleviates anxiety, it may also cause extreme fatigue, dizziness and upset stomach. Passion flower may cause an itchy rash that makes it unsuitable for some users.

Warning

Before beginning any herbal medications to treat your anxiety disorder, speak with your doctor first. Because some combinations of herbals and prescription medications can be a hazardous mix, your doctor may wish to change or discontinue your prescribed medications before you partake in an herbal exploration. There is also a possibility that you may have a severe allergic reaction when taking herbal medications; therefore, take one herbal form at a time in order to identify which one is causing an adverse reaction. Herbal remedies are not approved by the FDA, which means that no studies have been done supporting their usefulness or identifying their dangers.

Alternative Osteoporosis Treatment

Osteoporosis is marked by porous and easily broken bones. This condition can affect both genders but most cases occur in women past menopause. The bones become weak and brittle and can fracture easily due to a loss of minerals such as calcium, lowered estrogen levels and slower regeneration of new, stronger bone. Fractures, decrease in height due to fractured vertebrae, changed posture and curvature of the spine can all occur with osteoporosis. However, there are many natural treatments which can help improve bone health and relieve pain caused by the condition.

Beneficial Herbs

Alfalfa contains vitamin K which initiates bone regrowth. Take 1,000 to 2,000 mg in capsule form daily or eat a handful of fresh sprouts every day. Feverfew is an effective herbal pain reliever and anti-inflammatory. Take the freeze-dried herb in capsule form as directed on the label. Hawthorn stabilizes collagen, which is a strong flexible protein vital for strong bones. Take 250 mg three times a day. Por Huesos tea encourages bone growth. Drink 1 cup three times daily between meals. Soy isoflavone concentrate helps transport calcium from the bloodstream to the bones. Take 3,000 milligrams daily.

Do not use alfalfa is you are taking any blood thinning medications or if you are pregnant. Do not use feverfew if you are pregnant.

Herbs, like pharmaceutical agents, are tested to determine their therapeutic range, which is the smallest dose that provides any change in condition to the largest dose safe for consumption. While herbs are generally safe and non-toxic, stick to suggested amounts to avoid possible negative side effects. Taking more is not likely to produce additional benefit.

Other Suggestions

Use calcium citrate supplements. It is the form best absorbed by the body. Take at least 1,000 mg daily. Eat salads to help prevent fractures. Salad greens are rich in vitamin K, which assists bones with using protein to make collagen, which acts like a glue for bone structure. Vegetables rich in vitamin K are iceberg lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, kale, romaine lettuce and spinach. Aim for at least 1 serving per day. Avoid supplementing with vitamin A. A Swedish study of 66,651 women published in the November 1998 edition of "Annals of Internal Medicine" found that every milligram (3,000 international units) of vitamin A taken over the recommended daily allowance (RDA) increased the risk of bone fracture by 68 percent. It reduces bone density. The RDA for men is 5,000 international units and 4,000 for women.

Try to exercise regularly if approved by your doctor. Strength training and light weightlifting reduce risks of falling and improve bone density. Eggs, garlic and onions contain sulfur, which is needed for healthy bones. Avoid yeast products and soft drinks. They contain phosphorus, which competes with calcium for absorption by the body. Blueberries, cherries and cherry juice contain substances called proanthocyanidins that stabilize collagen and help keep bones intact.

How to Make Bean Bag Heating Pads

How to Make Bean Bag Heating Pads

Heatable bean bags are a safe, inexpensive aid for strained muscles and chronic pains. Medical director of the New York City Marathon, Lewis Maharam, MD, FACSM, explains that heat helps injuries because it increases blood flow, bringing in healing cells faster. It loosens tissues and can relax muscles. When using a heatable bean bag, apply to the area that is strained or otherwise injured for 20 minutes at a time. On an injury that is swollen, apply ice rather than heat.

Instructions

    1

Fold the fabric in half. Cut your desired shape and size of bag out of the cloth. No pattern is required; use your personal preference to determine the shape and size. Some options include a long, thin rectangle for draping around the neck or a 6-inch square to apply to large surface areas like the back. When you are finished, unfold the fabric and you will have two identical pieces of fabric.

    2

Place the two fabric pieces on top of each other, with the patterned sides of the fabric touching and facing inward. The back of the fabric should be visible on both sides.

    3

Thread the needle and sew a 1/4-inch stitch around the outside edge of the fabric, leaving a 1/4- to 1/2-inch margin. Do not complete the stitching, but leave a 1-inch opening for filling. Turn the nearly completed bag inside out by reaching inside the opening and pulling the patterned side of the fabric through the opening.

    4

Using the opening, fill the bag with your filling of choice until it is about 3/4 full.

    5

Sew the opening closed. To use, microwave the bag for 1 to 3 minutes.

Natural Remedies for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Natural Remedies for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS, is a common digestive disorder--an estimated 20 percent of adults suffer from it--of the intestine and can include abdominal pain, cramps, bloating, gas, diarrhea and constipation. While the exact causes remain a mystery, some natural remedies can relieve the pain and discomfort.

Herbal Remedies

Peppermint oil--taken in an enteric-coated capsule to prevent heartburn--is one of the best remedies for IBS. It acts as an antispasmodic in the intestinal tract, reduces abdominal pain and bloating, and eliminates excess gas. Herbs such as chamomile, rosemary, lemon balm and valerian can greatly reduce spasms in the intestines and are very effective. Consumption of ginger, either raw or in a tea, reduces inflammation.

Dietary Recommendations

Fiber--found either in fruits, vegetables, whole grains or as a supplement--is useful in regulating the intestines and is one of the most effective ways to improve symptoms of IBS. Drinking six to eight glasses of water daily can also help to regulate one's bowels. Some have found eating small meals frequently instead of larger meals to be helpful as this puts less pressure on the digestive system. Foods or beverages containing caffeine, carbonation, and/or fat may cause cramps in the intestine or increase the amount of gas produced so these should generally be avoided.

Other Suggestions

Exercise is a common recommendation for those with digestive issues as a way to move things along. Also, stress can trigger many digestive problems, so try to find ways to lower the stress in your life, or deal with it more effectively if elimination isn't possible.

Cellulitis Prevention & Naturopathic Cures

Cellulitis is a bacterial skin infection that commonly strikes the leg. Symptoms include inflammation, redness, tenderness and swelling. The offending bacteria enter through a crack or break in the skin that might have resulted from wounds, dermatitis or insect bites among other things. It is potentially life-threatening condition. Without proper treatment it can spread rapidly to the connective tissue, lymph nodes and bloodstream. You need treatment with oral antibiotics for 10 to 14 days. Natural treatments are only appropriate as a complement to standard care. You can do several things to reduce your risk of cellulitis.

Preventing Cellulitis

Clean any wounds daily with soap and water. Use a topical antibiotic like Neosporin to protect your wound from bacteria. Keep your wound covered with a bandage or some sort of dressing and change it every day or anytime it gets wet or dirty. Keep an eye out for infection; see your doctor if you notice redness, pain or pus.

If you have a condition like diabetes or poor circulation, you want to take extra precautions to prevent cellulitis. Keep your skin moisturized to prevent cracking and peeling and check your skin on a regular basis for cracks and cuts.

Complementing Conventional Care Naturally

Certain natural supplements can aid its tissue healing, reduce pain and inflammatin and complement the antibacterial action of antibiotics. Do not use these supplements without talking to your doctor. Seeking the guidance of a health care provider experienced in natural medicine is advised.

The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests the following natural supplements might be appropriate supplements to conventional care. Vitamin C (1,000 mg two to six times a day), vitamin E (400 to 800 IU daily) and zinc (30 mg daily) encourage wound healing and strengthen immunity.

Bromelain (250 mg three times a day) can ease swelling and inflammation; Echinacea (1,000 mg three times a day) encourages immunity, which can help fight off the bacteria.

Pycnogenol (200 mg daily) and gotu kola (60 mg twice a day) promote skin health. Do not use gotu kola if you suffer from anxiety or high blood pressure.

Certain herbs can be applied topically to treat infection and inflammation. Use yarrow, approved in Great Britain for infection and inflammation, in a sitz bath. Use 100 grams of powder for every 5 gallons of warm or hot water in your tub. Soak as long as desired. Make a paste from goldenseal root and slippery elm and apply twice a day. They are anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. Mix the contents of one capsule of each with a bit of water.

Colloidal Silver Dangers

Colloidal silver contains submicroscopic silver particles in a liquid base, used as an alternative health product for treating many disorders. Historically, people applied silver solutions as a topical antiseptic, and silver nitrate eyedrops are still administered to newborn infants to prevent eye infections. Consuming large amounts of silver or taking it for lengthy time frames can cause serious side effects.

According to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, negative effects associated with silver supplementation include seizures and kidney damage.

Pregnancy Concerns

Pregnant women should not take colloidal silver because it is linked to developmental abnormalities in unborn babies.

Drug Interactions

Colloidal silver decreases the absorption of some medications. These include penicillamine, quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics, and thyroxine.

Side Effects

In a poll conducted by the Silver Medicine website, a small number of respondents reported adverse effects from taking colloidal silver. These side effects included diarrhea, digestive problems, gas and a problem with calcium absorption.

Skin Condition

People who consume colloidal silver in large amounts or for long periods can experience a permanent change in skin color to ash-gray or blue-gray, a condition called argyria. This results from excess silver being deposited in the body.

Natural Cures for Multiple Myeloma

Multiple myeloma is the most prevalent form of bone cancer. People with this type of cancer are very susceptible to infection because this cancer affects the tissue that creates B cells, the immune cells that create antibodies that fight disease. Natural medicines cannot replace conventional medicines and are best used in conjunction to make standard treatments more effective and to ease the negative side effects. Always be sure to discuss any supplements with your doctor.

Herbal Treatments

Herbal treatments for multiple myeloma are broken down into two categories, those that increase the production of interferon, one of the body's key immune agents and those that will stimulate the immune system to fight off cancer cells and infections.

Herbs that stimulate interferon:They also have additional benefits as well that will be listed.

Bupleurum also helps prevent muscle spasms and eases side effects of steroid treatments. It can be taken in tea form prepared by a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner or take 300 milligrams a day in tablet form. Lentinan also activates NK (natural killer) cells, which are important in destroying damaged cells, such as cancer cells. This is given by intramuscular injection by a health care professional. Siberian ginseng naturally complements lentinan and also stimulates the production of B cells. Even if you do not do the lentinan injections, taking this supplement is still of benefit. Take the extract as directed on the label in cup of water.

Herbs that stimulate the immune system:These herbs also have additional benefit that will be listed.

Astragalus also restores white blood cell counts. Take 1,000 milligrams in capsule form three times a day. Maitake can also reduce tumor formation. Take 2,000 milligrams three times a day before eating. Scutelleria has a long history of use in Chinese medicine and is well known for its ability to fight off viruses and bacteria. This is good for people with multiple myeloma since they are at increased risk for infections. Take 2,000 milligrams three times a day.

Do not use Siberian ginseng if you have prostate cancer or an autoimmune disease such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. Avoid astragalus if you have a fever or skin infection. Do not use scutelleria if you have diarrhea.

Other Suggestions

The Chinese formula Ophiopogonis Decoction is very useful for relieving dry mouth caused by chemotherapy and radiation treatments. It also increases the effectiveness of various steroid drugs used in treating this condition. Do not use if you have a fever. Get 20 minutes of sun daily. Sunlight helps the skin produce vitamin D, which controls the reproduction of bone cells. This can slow the rate at which cancerous bone cells multiply. Taking supplements of this vitamin will not have the same effect and can be detrimental because it will make the bone release calcium that is already in low supply due to the cancer.

How to Benefit from Chia Seeds for Home Remedies

Chia seed has been a food of native peoples in the Americas for centuries. Called "the running food," it provides so much energy that it was said that warriors could eat as little as a teaspoon of chia during a 24-hour march. Chia seed is rich in antioxidants, fiber, vitamins and minerals. First studied by commercial grocers, the research community has begun to study the astonishing benefits of chia seed.

Instructions

    1

Add chia seed to your diet for its nutritional value. Numerous investigations have focused on analysis of the contents of chia seed. Chia seed is the highest known plant source of omega-3 fatty acids, with no cholesterol content, unlike sources like fish oil. The amount of protein in chia seed is higher than most common grains, such as corn, rice, wheat and oats. It also provides antioxidants, fiber and minerals.

    2

Manage blood sugar levels for diabetics. Chia is digested more slowly than other carbohydrates, maintaining blood sugar at a healthy level. Research indicates that white chia seeds improve cardiovascular risk factors in type 2 diabetics, including reduced blood pressure.

    3

Aid digestion using chia seeds. Chia seed's ability to absorb water is an aid to digestion. The seeds facilitate rapid absorption, which is important during growth periods, especially for young children and adolescents.

    4

Get full faster when you are losing weight. A unique gel is formed when the chia seed is exposed to water. It has no calories or flavor, and yet adds bulk to foods and enhances satisfaction of hunger. It helps dieters fill up faster and remain satisfied longer. It can even be used as an alternative to fats and oils used in baked goods.

    5

Improve your energy levels. Like the ancients, modern day athletes can improve energy levels while obtaining high levels of nutrition by consuming chia seeds. The seeds not only provide endurance through nutrition, but also help the athlete remain hydrated during long periods of exercise.

Rose Oil Recipe

Rose oil has many uses, not least of which is as a relaxing, soothing massage oil. Its fragrance also eases anger, fear and depression, and some use it to relieve heart problems, eczema, stress and high blood pressure. It can be used for skin conditions, as a bath oil, as a perfume, as an aphrodisiac and for menstrual problems.

Making Rose Oil

You can make rose oil and rose water at the same time with a heating and cooling method. Put a small, heavy bowl in a deep pot, fill it halfway with water and put a layer of rose petals in the bottom of the pot with more water, halfway up the bowl. After heating the setup to boiling, place a large bowl full of ice on top of the pot and allow to simmer for several hours. The small bowl will contain both rose water and rose oil; separate the two by pouring the mixture through a separator funnel. This produces a very small amount of pure rose oil; if you want a larger quantity and are OK with a more diluted oil, there is another method, recommended for soap or candle fragrances by Shirley Reed of the North Country Soapmaking Library. Again, use fresh rose petals, but soak them in olive, jojoba, coconut or palm oil. Crush the petals into the oil, and let the mixture stand for a day. Press the oil out of the petals, then strain the oil to get out any remaining pieces. Add fresh rose petals to the oil, press and strain it again. Do this at least six or seven times, and the fragrance will get stronger each time.

Rose Oil Recipes

For a massage oil, mix a drop of rose oil with jojoba or almond oil for a relaxing, fragrant and skin-stimulating massage. For a face oil, mix a drop of rose oil with almond or apricot oil, and vitamin E. Make a room misting spray with two or three drops of rose oil, sea salt and water.

A hot or cold rose oil compress can be made by putting four to six drops of oil into hot or cold water, soaking an absorbent cloth in it and applying to a muscle ache or headache. Rose oil can also be used to clear the lungs in a steam treatment, by putting three to five drops in a bowl of boiling water and breathing in the steam from the bowl.

How to Treat Intermittent Claudication with Natural Remedies

A simple way to treat Intermittent Claudication is with natural remedies. Intermittent Claudication is a medical condition that causes pain in the muscles in the legs. Natural remedies can not cure Intermittent Claudication but they can help to improve the condition. Below are some of the more effective natural remedies for Intermittent Claudication.

Instructions

    1

Take Inositol Hexaniacinate in supplemental form daily. Inositol Hexaniacinate is a form of Vitamin B3 that has been used successfully to treat Intermittent Claudication. Ideally you should take around 2 grams, twice per day, for a total of around 3 months.

    2

Take L-Carnitine in supplemental form daily. L-Carnitine has been shown in double blind trials to increase walking distance in patients with Intermittent Claudication. Most patients were able to walk 75% further after only three weeks of taking L-Carnitine.

    3

Take Policosanol in supplemental form daily. The suggested dosage of this treatment is 10 mg, twice per day, for a total of at least 6 months. Policosanol has been shown to increase pain free walking capacity in patients with Intermittent Claudication by nearly double.

Skin Discoloration & Infrared Saunas

Skin Discoloration & Infrared Saunas

When a sauna is heated by an infrared heat source, it is referred to as an infrared sauna. There are two types of infrared saunas: infrared lamp saunas, which use incandescent infrared heat lamps as the heat source; and far infrared saunas, in which ceramic or metallic heating elements emit far infrared heat.

Health Benefits

Proponents of far infrared saunas claim they provide a multitude of health benefits. While many of these benefits have not been proven, some of the scientifically substantiated claims include quicker recovery from injuries, increased blood circulation, improved blood pressure, improved mood and at least some alleviation of chronic pain.

Using Far Infrared Saunas to Treat Skin Discoloration

Because far infrared saunas increase blood circulation in the skin, you may experience improved skin tone in the form of a rosy glow. There is no hard evidence that far infrared saunas improve acne, however, the perspiration and increased circulation induced by such a sauna are most likely helpful.

Can Far Infrared Saunas Cause Skin Discoloration?

If you emerge from a far infrared sauna with a red face, it is simply a temporary dilation of your skin's blood vessels in response to the heat of the sauna. While infrared heat warms your body in a way that is similar to the way the sun warms you, far infrared rays are different from ultraviolet rays and do not cause sunburn.

Home Remedy for Heartburn

Home Remedy for Heartburn

Over 60 million Americans suffer from heartburn on a regular basis. Taking over-the-counter antacids can sometimes relieve the symptoms, but doesn't address the problem. The problem is usually a high level of stomach acid that backs up into the esophagus. Here are a few tips to help relieve heartburn, and prevent its occurrence.

Reduce Consumption of Acidic Foods

Stomach acid increases when a person consumes too much acid-forming food. Try to avoid regular consumption of caffeinated beverages, dairy foods, fried foods, sugar, and processed foods. Milk may seem like a "soothing" type of drink for heartburn, but it is very acidic to your body.

Increase Consumption of Alkaline Foods

Stomach acid decreases when a person consumes food that is non-acidic, or alkaline, in its content. Try eating more foods like raw vegetables and fruits.

Drink Lots of Water

At the first signs of heartburn, drink a big glass of water. Many times this helps because it pushes the stomach acid out of the esophagus and back into the stomach, where it belongs.

Try Raw Apple Cider Vinegar

Instead of reaching for that Tums or Rolaids, try a tablespoon of (preferably organic) raw apple cider vinegar mixed with a glass of water. This can be taken before or during a meal. The acid in the vinegar converts to a base, or an alkaline, and reduces the stomach acid.

Eat Smaller, More Frequent Meals

Eating large quantities of food at one sitting can greatly increase your stomach's acid volume. The more food present to digest, the more acid is needed to break it down. Eat smaller meals throughout the day, or "graze." This will help minimize the production of stomach acid.

How to Dissolve Gallstones Naturally

Gallstones are formed in the gall bladder when digestive fluids solidify into hard "stones." (See Reference 1.) While many people never develop gallstone symptoms, others are plagued with sudden gallstone attacks. These attacks, which occur when a gallstone passes from the gall bladder into the duct leading to the intestines, can last several hours and are often accompanied by fever and nausea. In the most severe cases, surgery may be needed to remove the stones; however, sometimes you can dissolve gallstones naturally.

Instructions

    1

Eat a minimum of 25 grams of fiber daily, the minimum recommended for healthy digestion and bowel function. (See Reference 2.)

    2

Drink at least eight glasses of water each day, more if you are a large person. A good general guideline is to drink oz. per 1 pound of body weight.

    3

Consume grapefruit daily to flush out your gall bladder.

    4

Take olive oil or add it to salads, seafood and other foods. Like grapefruit, olive oil is good for flushing out the gall bladder and liver. However, you should avoid other fatty foods that are high in cholesterol.

    5

Take peppermint oil. Peppermint contains terpenses, compounds believed to dissolve stones and prevent new ones from forming. The easiest way to take this supplement is in the form of enteric-coated capsules, which allow the peppermint to pass into the intestines before it's broken down. (See Reference 3.)

Where to Find Stem Cells

A stem cell is a single cell found in all living organisms. Stem cells have the ability to change into different types of specialized cells needed to build and repair living organisms. There are two types of stem cells: embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. These two types can be divided into two groups: undifferentiated cells that are able to generate into any form of tissue and tissue specific cells that have already developed to form a specific tissue type. Human life actually begins with stem cells that divide and define the different cells of the human body. Life depends on these stem cells.

Instructions

    1

Undifferentiated embryonic stem cells are found in living embryos. The undifferentiated cells are found in the early process of development of a fetus. The fertilized egg divides into two cells then four then eight and so on until there are about 150 cells. At this point of development the group of cells is called the blastocyst. The blastocyst contains two types of cells: the trophoblast and the inner cell mass. Undifferentiated embryonic stem cells are found in the inner cell mass.

    2

Tissue specific embryonic stem cells are found in the umbilical blood of a newborn. A small number of stem cells can also be found in the fetal tissue. In order to obtain enough cells to be useful, these cells are extracted and cultured in the laboratory where they can multiply. Recent research has found stem cells in the amniotic fluid and teeth (which are still beneath the gums) of newborns at this point are not useful.

    3

Adult stem cells are only tissue specific cells that are used by the body to reproduce certain tissues or components of the body. One specific adult stem cell is found in the bone marrow. These cells are used to form new blood cells, blood vessels, bone, cartilage and muscle.

    4

All stem cells used for research and therapies are found in certain laboratories and research facilities throughout the world. In order to obtain the number of stem cells needed they must be allowed to reproduce and multiply in the laboratory without changing their composition. Small amounts of stem cells are extracted from the source and placed into a culture dish lined with mouse embryonic skin cells that supply nutrients to the stem cells. The cultures are kept in specialized incubators until enough cells are present to be used.

How to Use Home Remedies for Constipation

How to Use Home Remedies for Constipation

Unfortunately, we all suffer from constipation every once in a while. Constipation can be painful and irritating. Certain foods and medications can cause constipation. Also lack of fiber in our diet can cause constipation. We know we need enough fiber to stay regular but not everyone can or will consume enough fiber in their day to have normal and regular bowel movements. There are over-the-counter and prescriptions to relieve constipation, but there are other, more natural ways to ease constipation, some of which are listed below.

Instructions

    1

Drink 4 oz. of prune juice with pulp along with plenty of water. First, drink a glass every morning until you get back to normal, and then cut back to once a week. For those who do not like prunes, use apricots instead. Drink a glass of apricot juice every morning or eat 2 dried apricots every day to relieve constipation.

    2

Grind flaxseed in a blender or food processor and keep small batches of it in the refrigerator. Take 1/2 tsp. every day with a glass of juice or water. Flaxseed keeps well by itself, but once ground, it can go bad quickly, so keep it refrigerated. For those who suffer from constipation quite frequently, keep enough flaxseed in your refrigerator so you won't run out. Another great way to get your daily dose of flaxseed is to sprinkle the ground flaxseed in your breakfast every morning.

    3

Make a solution of flax seed. Simply stir the ground flax seed into 3 qt. of water for 15 minutes. Cool the liquid and strain it. Keep the flax seed solution refrigerated and add 2 oz. every day to fruit juice or water.

    4

Eat 30 pieces of sugar-free candy every day to relieve constipation. Sugar-free candy has an ingredient that can cause diarrhea, and if you do not eat too much, this can ease constipation and keep you regular every day. A good example of sugar-free candy is jelly beans. You can also chew sugar-free gum every, day but the candy works better.

Carrot Oil Uses

Carrot Oil Uses

Carrot oil, also known as Queen Anne's Lace, comes from -- you guessed it -- carrots. According to the online drug index, Drugs.com, carrot oil is a non-toxic derivative of the carrot seed. Though clinical studies in humans are limited, carrot oil has been used for generations as an alternative therapy for a variety of ailments including muscle stiffness, skin problems and vasoconstriction. Ingestion of large quantities of carrot oil can potentially have neurological side-effects, as it contains myristicin -- a psychoactive agent.

Fragrance

Carrot oil is used to add scent to many products such as soap, candles, laundry and dish-washing detergent, creams and perfumes. It is also used to make an essential oil used for massage and aromatherapy. Most of the carrot oil used in aromatherapy originates in Europe, though the carrot originated from Afghanistan. Carrot seed oil is known to relieve stress and exhaustion due to its natural earthy fragrance.

Food

Carrot oil is often used as a food coloring agent in things like desserts, condiments, meat and soups. Most commonly carrot oil, since it comes from carrots, is indirectly used to serve as the basis of stews, braises and soups, giving them a thicker, richer texture. Carrot oil is high in vitamin A and beta-carotene; it also contains complex B vitamins and vitamins C, D, E and K. Most of us have heard from our grandmothers or mothers of how important carrots are for eyesight and skin health. According to an article published on the website Essential Oils entitled "Carrot Seed Essential Oil Information," there appears to be some truth to that theory.

Hair and Skin Care

Carrot oil can improve the appearance of skin.
Carrot oil can improve the appearance of skin.

Carrot oil is known to cause vasodilation, or widening of the veins; as a vasodilator, it helps increase blood flow to the skin's surface, which can improve the appearance of your skin. In alternative medicine, it is often used as a facial treatment and in hair creams and oils to improve the health and look of both. There are countless products designed for African-American hair types especially, which are made with carrot oil. Carrot oil is recommended for detangling very brittle, dry hair.

Colic and Teething

Carrot seed is also used as an alternative medical treatment to relieve colic in babies. Boil a carrot with a few sprinkles of fennel in a half a pint of water for 10 to 15 minutes, strain, cool and feed to your baby. The natural oils in carrots can help soothe teething pain in older babies who are able to chew properly. Allow your older baby or toddler to chew on a carrot to help sooth gum pain. Only use this method if you are certain your child is fully capable of eating raw carrots to avoid choking.

Positive Vs. Negative Ions

Positive Vs. Negative Ions

A balanced atom has the same number of positively-charged protons as it has negatively-charged electrons. However, not all atoms are balanced and environmental changes make atoms lose or gain electrons, while the number of protons always changes. This change in electrons makes the atom a positive or negative ion, one that may have an affect on your health.

Atoms

All atoms contain neutrons and protons in the nucleus of the atom and electrons circling the nucleus. Neutrons have a neutral charge, while electrons produce a negative charge and protons a positive charge. Since electrons orbit the outside of an atom, it is the loss or gaining of electrons that determines whether an atom becomes a positive or negative ion.

Positive Ion Definition

An atom should have an equal balance of positive and negative charges. This means that the number of electrons and protons starts as equal. With time and exposure to the catalysts in the environment, atoms sometimes lose electrons. This gives the atom a greater number of protons than electrons, giving the ion a positive charge. These ions are called positive ions.

Negative Ion Definition

Just as some atoms lose electrons, other atoms gain additional electrons. This gives the ion an imbalance of negative charge overwhelming the positive protons. Therefore, ions with more electrons than protons are called negative ions.

Elements

Positive ions make up the metals of the periodic table, such as those found in Group I and Group II. Negative ions are found in the non-metal elements. Positive and negative ions are important when writing the elements, because they determine which ion is written first. Compounds which have both positive and negative ions are written with the positive ion first. Additionally, the number of positive and negative ions in an equation should balance out.

Theories/Speculation

Since the 1930s, exposure to negative ions has been linked to health benefits, first by Russian researcher A L. Tchijevski, who found that exposure to negative ions reduced the growth of bacteria. Later, during World War II, airplanes of pilots were subjected to negatively charged ions to reduce the chances of the pilots getting sick, and present day US submarines are equipped with negative ion producers. In contrast, for all but 5% of the population, exposure to positive ions is linked to a variety of unwanted side effects that include constriction of the veins and increase in respiration. Many machines exist on the market to boost the negative ion count in the home or office environment.

Flower Remedy for Exhaustion

Flower essences are dilute extracts of flowers that can help to achieve positive changes in mood, mental health and physical health, according to the early 20th century homeopathic doctor James Bach and his followers. Flower essences are widely available for purchase, each essence identified as a treatment for a particular mood imbalance or physical ailment--or, with minimal effort, you can easily make your own flower essences. Flower essences are sometimes used to treat exhaustion, both exhaustion of the nerves (emotional) and of the body (physical).

Materials

To make your own flower essence you will need:
    Clear glass bowls (2)
    Coffee filter
    Funnel
    Small dark colored bottle
    Spring water
    Brandy
    Flowers

Instructions

Making your own flower essences is a rewarding process. To make a flower essence for treating exhaustion, first find naturally growing flowers reported to be helpful for treating exhaustion. (See suggested flowers below.) Fill one of the glass bowls with spring water. On a sunny day, gently pick enough open flowers to fill the bowl completely. Leave the bowl in direct sunlight for 3 to 4 hours. Using the filter paper and a funnel, filter the flower essence water into the second glass bowl. Fill the dark colored bottle half-way full with the flower essence and top up the remaining space with brandy. The brandy will help preserve the flower essence.

Recommended Flowers

Flowers which have been found useful in counteracting exhaustion include:
    Olive
    Vervian
    Sunflower
    Echinacea
    Indian Paintbrush
    Chicory
    Century Plant
    Yarrow
    Calendula

Effectiveness

It is believed by alternative practitioners that flower essences work through vibrational healing. Dr. Bach concluded that "flowers have an energy that can balance human discord, reestablishing the link between body and soul." (Pallas-Downey, 2002) A peer-reviewed double-blind study conducted by J.R. Cram, concluded that flower essences impart a sense of calm in stressed patients. (Cram, J.R., 2000)

Tips

Take two to four drops up to four times per day.

Flower essences can be consumed sublingually (under the tongue), dropped in a glass of water, included in bath water or sprayed in the air.

Flower essences are safe for children, elderly people and pets.

Remember to label your flower essence with the date, flowers used and ailment treated.

Warnings

Check with your doctor before using flower essences as remedies.

Flower essences are not suitable for individuals with alcohol sensitivity or recovering alcoholics.

Pros & Cons of Wild Oregano Oil

Pros & Cons of Wild Oregano Oil

Known for its antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, wild oregano oil might have health benefits and be an effective way to treat a wide variety of ailments. While oregano oil doesnt necessarily have negative side effects, its benefits arent well documented, so its effectiveness isnt well known among the medical community.

Wild Oregano Oil Might Have Healing Properties

Oregano oil manufacturers and natural healing proponents claim that oregano oil has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. Oregano can be taken in capsule form, and the oil can also be applied externally. James Balch and Mark Stengler, authors of Prescription for Natural Cures, say that oregano oil effectively kills bacteria. This makes it helpful for a wide variety of conditions, including thrush and yeast infections (candida albicans). They recommend 300 to 500 mg in capsule form three times a day with meals. Those affected can also use the liquid version and follow the manufacturers directions.

Oregano oil might also be helpful for viruses, such as the flu. Oregano oil might work to prevent and also treat troublesome flu symptoms. For people afflicted with the flu, Balch and Stengler recommend taking 500 mg of oregano oil four times a day.

A preliminary study at the Western University of Australia found that oregano oil was effective at killing several types of bacteria, including staphylococcus, a bacteria commonly associated with skin infections. For skin lesions, oregano oil can be applied directly to the skin. Or, take 500 mg of oregano oil capsules four times a day.

No Published Trials on its Effectiveness

Though natural healing experts tout its antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, James T. Li, allergy and asthma specialist at the Mayo Clinic, says that no published trials exist to show that it might be effective for any condition, particularly preventing and relieving sinusitis. Li does say, though, that it probably does contain antibacterial and antimicrobial properties simply because its a spice. Though no evidence exists, it might be helpful for sinus conditions caused by bacteria and fungi. While smaller-scale tests--such as a Western University of Australia study--have shown some benefit, users should still be cautious, as these tests are considered preliminary.

Not Effective for Pregnant Women

Though pregnant women are often searching for natural, safe alternative to common maladies, they shouldnt take oregano oil internally. The Maternity Corner says that oregano has contraction-producing properties.

What Are Some Ways to Get Energized Fast?

What Are Some Ways to Get Energized Fast?

The best way to maintain optimal energy is to get the recommended eight hours of sleep, eat healthful foods and exercise regularly. Hectic lifestyles don't always allow for these commonsense means of maintaining pep. Fortunately, there are tricks to getting a quick energy boost when you start to fade. Eating a power snack, taking a meditation break or even a 20-minute nap can all have a positive pick-me-up effect.

Exercise

More energy may be just a quick 10-minute walk away. Add a mental pep talk to your stroll by thinking positive thoughts while you're walking -- favorite positive affirmations, for example, or thoughts of gratitude. You don't even have to leave the house (or your office) to get a boost of pep through exercise. Just standing on your toes and stretching your arms over your head will revive your brain and oxygenate your body.

Power Foods

To get energized quickly, choose a small snack of complex carbohydrates, lean protein and healthy fats, like the kind found in nuts. Good choices include blueberries, soy, salmon, almonds, sweet potatoes, oatmeal and whole grains. Carbohydrates metabolize more quickly for a faster lift, but protein helps you stay energized longer. Finally, if you've ever experienced a post-Thanksgiving "food coma" you know that large amounts of food at one sitting are the opposite of energizing. So, when using healthy foods to power up, keep in mind that less is more.

Natural Stimulants

Coffee is the go-to drink for a quick pick-me-up because of its caffeine content. No one is sure exactly how caffeine works to stimulate energy -- but studies have shown that caffeine increases metabolism and has a positive effect on fat oxidation. Coffee, tea and chocolate all contain caffeine as do the commercial energy drinks available in stores, with chocolate also containing sugar that can lead to a buzz. Use caffeine in moderation -- too much will lead to short-term gains but a later energy crash.

Power Down

If you have time, you can always go old-school and take a quick nap. Sleeping for as little as 20 minutes can refresh the mind, but don't nap longer than that or you'll wake up groggy. When done for about the same amount of time, meditation also offers rejuvenating benefits. You can add creative visualization to your meditation practice and envision yourself vital and energized.

Home Remedy for an Infected Cuticle

An infected cuticle can be a source of discomfort around your fingernail, not to mention the unsightly condition it causes for your hands. The exposure your hands and fingernails get determines a lot about how your cuticles respond and look. If your hands are in chemicals or hard water or your put your hands through harsh conditions on a regular basis, you may find more than one cuticle infected and want to try a home remedy to cure the problem and restore the natural beauty of healthy cuticles, fingernails and hands.

Start With a Soak

Often the infected cuticle has been subjected to picking or some other form of irritant that causes the infection to start. Some people try to eliminate the problem by clipping back the skin, but this can just cause the problem to worsen and create tenderness around the infected cuticle that makes it unsightly and uncomfortable to touch.

Treating an infected cuticle is simple when you start with a warm salt water soak at night just before you go to bed. This helps to draw out some of the infection and pain around the cuticle. After the soak, proceed with an anti-bacterial such as Bacitracin or Neosporin. You can also wrap the cuticle with a Band-Aid overnight to start the healing process.

Keep Germs Away

You've heard many times about the importance of washing your hands, and now you're being told again about the importance of keeping germs away from an infected cuticle because the skin and cuticle are already compromised. A simple basic cleansing method will allow you some relief from the discomfort of swelling and clear away germs that may be festering in the area.

A wet nailbrush that has been dipped in baking soda can be used to soften your cuticles and clean your nails thoroughly. This natural remedy can be done after the salt soak so that cuticles are not so tender. Repeat this process nightly for several nights and watch for improvement.

Try White Vinegar

If it sounds simple enough, that's because it is. Start with equal amounts of vinegar and water and place the infected cuticle in the mixture. Expect some stinging, but if it becomes too uncomfortable, add some additional water. Soak the problem cuticle for around 10 to 15 minutes, and then gently wash hands with an anti-bacterial soap to get rid of the vinegar smell.

An over-the-counter antibiotic is good, but if you have access to Bactroban, this is even better. If not, try making a cuticle oil from ounce each of olive oil, jojoba oil, macadamia nut oil and apricot kernel oil. Add a drop or two of rosemary oil, tea tree oil and lavender oil. Use a drop of the mixture on the base of the cuticle that's infected.

Natural Cure for Extreme Fatigue

Natural Cure for Extreme Fatigue

Although many people experience periods of fatigue, many others are plagued with extreme fatigue that can last for days or even weeks at a time. This chronic fatigue is not only detrimental to their emotions as it can be emotionally disturbing to continuously be exhausted, but it can cause severe complications to other areas of their life if they are too tired to function at work.

Causes of Extreme Fatigue

Many different factors can contribute to extreme fatigue. One of the leading causes of chronic, extreme fatigue is a poor diet. When we fail to supply our bodies with the necessary nutrients that it needs, it can shut down and cause us to become exhausted in a means to get us to rest so that our body can repair damaged cells.

Stress is also a major cause of extreme fatigue. When we are constantly stressed, the mental tension that we feel causes the rest of our body to become tensed up and unable to relax. As our body's muscles remain tensed, enormous amounts of energy are expended which leaves us feeling constantly exhausted.

Many medical conditions can contribute to extreme fatigue. Vitamin deficiencies and conditions such as anemia often lead to extreme tiredness.

Extreme Fatigue Treatment

The first step in naturally treating extreme fatigue is to evaluate your diet. Whether a poor diet is the leading cause of your fatigue or not, changing your diet to include all-natural, whole foods will help to restore energy and provide your body with the nutrients it needs to function properly.

Although changing your diet to include rich, nutritious foods will help provide energy and combat fatigue, you should also consider adding certain supplements to your diet. Magnesium and potassium can help to protect your body against fatigue and are minerals that many people often lack adequate amounts of, as are sodium and zinc. Adding a calcium supplement is also important because it helps your body to relax naturally and rest, which will also help to prevent fatigue from occurring.

Whether your extreme fatigue is stress related, using certain stress reducing techniques can also help to reduce fatigue. Yoga, meditation, breathing exercises and light physical exercise daily will help to reduce muscle tension that can drain your body of energy. These techniques also help to promote healthy cellular function which can reduce fatigue that is caused by other factors.

Natural Remedy for Drop Foot

Drop foot, also called foot drop, is a condition in which the front part of the foot cannot be raised. Drop foot is normally caused by a muscular or neurological disorder such as stroke, cerebral palsy or multiple sclerosis. People with drop foot drag or scruff their feet along the ground or bend their knees more than normal to lift their foot higher. The disorder may affect one or both feet. Natural treatment is available for drop foot disorder.

Braces and Splints

Your doctor or podiatrist provides you with an orthoses. An orthoses is a hard ankle foot brace that encloses the ankle and slides into your shoe, but does not extend above the knee. The brace keeps the ankle in one position, helping you to walk with a more natural gait, according to the Mayo Clinic. You may be outfitted for a splint that slips inside your shoe and helps support your foot. Shoe inserts that support the front of your foot may also be placed inside your shoe. Orthoses are commonly the first line of treatment for drop foot.

Physical Therapy

Your doctor may recommend physical therapy exercises for your drop foot. A physical therapist devises an exercise routine that strengthens muscles in your legs and feet. Your therapist may need to teach you how to walk again if the drop foot is severe. This type of treatment is called gait training. Physical therapy may take two to three sessions a week over one or two months to see improvement.

Nerve Stimulation

Your doctor may offer nerve stimulation as a treatment option. The peroneal nerve that affects the front part of your foot is stimulated by an electrical stimulator. You wear the stimulator strapped to the lower part of your leg. The stimulator releases small electrical pulses that enter your leg and stimulate the nerve. Nerve stimulation is a non-invasive way to help drop foot.

Drop foot is usually the result of another medical condition. See your doctor at the first sign of drop foot as it may be a symptom of a more serious medical problem.

How Can Parasites Benefit Humans?

Parasites are usually considered to be harmful creatures that drain nutrition from their hosts while giving nothing in return. However, speculation exists as to whether or not parasites might actually have a practical function.

Theories/Speculation

An article published in the British Medical Journal in 1989 suggested that excessive hygiene could be to blame for many health problems like allergies and autoimmune diseases. David P. Strachan, the author, suggested that parasites and bacteria played a role in stimulating the immune system in our ancestors. As of 2010 his theories have not been scientifically investigated.

History

According to the Health Guidance website, leeches, which are parasites that attach to a host and break the skin to drink its blood, have been used since the 18th century when bloodletting was a popular treatment for disease. ABC News indicates that women ingested tapeworm eggs to help them keep their weight down during the 1950s.

Effects

Currently, leeches are used to help the skin reattach and promote healing after surgery, and they reduce discoloration in a black eye. The Tapeworm Diet website advocates using worms to control weight and stimulate the immune system, a practice that is banned by the FDA.

Home Treatment for Shoulder Bursitis

The shoulder is one of the most common parts of the body to be afflicted by bursitis. Bursitis is the result of overuse of the shoulder joint and is commonly associated with activity that can range from playing tennis to raking the yard. If not treated, chronic bursitis can result in a buildup of calcium deposits that will ultimately decrease your ability to use the shoulder. Several home remedies can be applied.

Causes

The causes of shoulder bursitis are related to repetitive motions or suddenly strenuous activity in a normally sedentary person. Heavy lifting is a frequent catalyst and the pain can be related to either the amount lifted or lifting a smaller weight from an uncomfortable position. A good way to prevent bursitis is not to engage in any strenuous activity for a long time after a long period of inactivity. Also, be aware of repetitive motions that use the shoulder.

Prevention

Preventative measures for those who must engage in the kind of actions that cause shoulder bursitis involve warming up the muscles. The idea is to keep from putting undue strain on the muscles in the shoulders. Warming up the muscles and ligaments in the shoulder stretches them and reduces the stress placed on tightened muscles.

Massage

Massage is an excellent remedy that can be done at home after the pain has already started. Rest the injured shoulder while you are feeling pain so that you don't worsen the condition. Massaging the area causing pain improves circulation while relaxing the muscles that surround the painful area.

Herbal Therapy

Increasing circulation is a vital elementin reducing the pain. Herbal therapy can help improve circulation, as well as reduce the inflammation. A common herbal treatment for bursitis is a mixture of willow bark, cramp bark, celery seed, and prickly ash.

Nutrition

Natural treatment involves vitamins and nutrients that are good for building muscle tissue. The best are vitamin C, vitamin A,and zinc. Vitamin C can be found in copious amounts in fruits and vegetables. The old-fashioned treatment of cod liver oil is still one of the best ways to get vitamin A. For zinc, eat pasta, cereals, nuts, and even oysters.
