Hypocalcemia Prevention

Hypocalcemia is a biochemical abnormality wherein the calcium level in your blood is low. Calcium is a vital mineral for maintaining muscle contraction, cell permeability, bone formation, blood coagulation and transmission of nerve impulses. Hypocalcemia is commonly caused by emotional distress, alcoholism, coagulation abnormalities and insufficient calcium in your blood circulation. If left untreated, hypocalcemia can be life-threatening. However, you can prevent hypocalcemia effectively by applying natural prevention methods.

Instructions

    1

Eat foods high in vitamin D. Consuming foods high in vitamin D can prevent hypolcalcemia by increasing the absorption of calcium in your gastrointestinal system. Foods rich in vitamin D include tofu, almonds, milk, oats and cabbage. Eat these foods every day.

    2

Eat plenty of ginger. Blood clotting abnormalities can cause hypocalcemia. Eating ginger will prevent blood clots. Add ginger to your food dishes on a daily basis. You can also eat ginger candy which can give you the same benefit.

    3

Avoid drinking alcohol. Alcohol can deplete the magnesium stores in your body. Magnesium deficiency can lead to hypocalcemia. Drink healthy fluids such as juices and mineral water instead.

    4

Take calcium capsules. Oral calcium supplements can balance the calcium levels in your blood preventing hypolcalcemia. The recommended dosage is one 1000 mg capsule once daily.

    5

Do yoga breathing exercises to help prevent emotional problems. Emotional distress such as anxiety can cause hypocalcemia. When you are constantly experiencing anxiety, you tend to breathe rapidly causing abnormal fluctuations in blood Ph levels thereby decreasing your blood calcium concentration. See link below for a You Tube video on yoga.

How to Do a Home Kidney Stone Cleanse

Your body has two kidneys that function to filter toxins and waste products from your blood. They also regulate the electrolyte levels in your body. Waste products of cellular metabolism, often rich in nitrogen, are eliminated from your body in the form of urine. Occasionally, urine can crystallize and form renal calculi (kidney stones). If left untreated, these kidney stones can cause blockage and severe pain. However, by applying the natural treatments below, and after consulting with a doctor about your symptoms, you can cleanse your urinary system of kidney stones at home.

Instructions

    1

Consume fruits high in citrates. Citrates stop kidney stones from increasing in size while preventing calcium from accumulating in your kidneys. Fruits high in citrates include grapes, bananas, oranges and tomatoes.

    2

Take kava-kava tablets. This herb is a calcium channel blocker which alleviates the spasms related to kidney stones while relaxing your urethra. The recommended dosage is one 120 mg tablet once daily.

    3

Drink an olive oil and lemon juice concoction. The olive oil lubricates and soothes your urethral passages while the high acidity of the lemon juice breaks down the crystal aggregations, clearing your urethral passages of kidney stones. Drink this mixture once a day before going to bed. If stone pain is detected, mix 2 oz. olive oil with 2 oz. lemon juice, drink straight down and then drink a large glass of water. Stones should pass within 24 hours.

    4

Drink apple cider vinegar. The high acidity of apple cider vinegar breaks up your kidney stones and allows them to easily pass from your body through your urine. Drink 5 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar daily, preferably 30 minutes before meals, diluted to your taste in water.

    5

Drink a lot of water. Increasing your water consumption prevents new kidney stones from forming, while softening existing ones. Drink twelve full glasses of water a day to cleanse your urinary system of kidney stones.

How to Bring Down High Blood Pressure with Natural Remedies

High blood pressure is nothing to mess around with. While you may have no physical symptoms, if your blood pressure is elevated, you run the risk of developing heart disease or having a stroke. High blood pressure also increases the risk of blindness and other medical conditions. After seeing your doctor for an initial diagnosis, you'll need regular blood pressure testing to determine if you're getting control of the situation. Some natural remedies may help you bring down high blood pressure.

Instructions

    1

Take the salt shaker off the table. Sodium is the main dietary contributor to high blood pressure. Use non-sodium seasoning blends that combine herbs and spices to give your food more flavor.

    2

Buy lean cuts of meat and limit your meat consumption. Vegetarians do not experience high blood pressure as much as meat eaters do. If you must eat meat, trim away all the fat before cooking and bake or grill the meat, don't fry it.

    3

Give up alcohol and cigarettes. Nicotine causes your blood vessels to narrow, increasing the force with which your heart must pump the blood to your body and tissues. Two or fewer alcoholic drinks per day may not be harmful, but they aren't beneficial, either.

    4

Close your eyes and imagine your favorite outdoor spot when you feel stressed out. Anxiety plays a role in raising your blood pressure. Learn to relax. Take yoga class or learn to meditate.

    5

Start an exercise routine, but not weight lifting. The strain of lifting heavy weights may cause your blood pressure to temporarily skyrocket. Try swimming, walking or riding a bike.

How to Remove Body Hair With Sugar

Sick of that unwanted hair on you legs, under your arm, or even on you face? Every woman wishes they could remove unwanted hair fast and easy, with less pain. Sure, you can try waxing and shaving but this can be painful and leave your skin irritated. Why not try this new technique called "sugaring" to remove that unwanted hair. The sugar paste sticks only to the hair and not the skin, so it's not as painful as waxing.
Results can last up to six weeks and after repetitive use, the hair follicle can be damaged, so the hair may never even grow back. Now isn't that something we all would love?

Instructions

    1

Mix together your sugar, lemon juice (without pulp or seeds), and water in a sauce pan over medium to high heat, stirring often, and bring to a boil. You can also add a few drops of lavender oil and tea tree oil, if you wish, which has a calming effect on the skin. Once your mixture is boiling, reduce to low-medium heat and simmer for 25-30 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool for 10 minutes, then place in an airtight container. Your mixture should now be a dark color, similar to a dark soda.

    2

Make sure your mixture has cooled to room temperature before applying to the skin then spread your paste over the area in which you wish to remove hair. I like to do one small area at a time, no bigger than a few inches long but you can do a larger area. I use the back side of a spoon to smear the paste on the skin, or you can use whatever works for you, such as a small plastic or rubber spatula.

    3

Apply your waxing strip, which can be found at any store that sells hair removal products. You can also use an old sheet or pillow case, cut into strips. This is a big money saving tip! Rub the strip on the wax, then simply strip it away. It's that simple!

    4

Excess paste left behind is water soluble, so it washes away easily and won't irritate the skin like normal waxing can.

What Is Yerba Mate Leaf?

What Is Yerba Mate Leaf?

Yerba mate is a drink made from the dried and crushed leaves of a native South American holly shrub called Ilex paraguariensis. The leaves are steeped in water to create a tea-like beverage.

History

Yerba mate was widely used in pre-Columbian times, according to W.P. Armstrong from Palomar College, by people from the lowland areas of Paraguay. It was also popular among Andean Indians, who used the tea as a stimulant when making arduous treks through the mountains.

Benefits

Yerba mate contains approximately 1 percent caffeine, approximately the same amount of caffeine that is in coffee. The beverage was commonly used by South American natives to stimulate the nervous system, increase urine production, and reduce muscle tension. It also helped relieve fatigue-related headaches and reduce overly active appetites.

Features

South Americans drink yerba mate from small gourds that are made into special cups. The gourds are often embellished with silver rims and elaborate support bases. They place mate powder in the gourd and fill it with boiling water and sip the tea through a perforated metal straw called a bombilla that filters out the leaf particles.

ADHD Alternative Medication

ADHD can be a difficult affliction for individuals to overcome, but is there a middle ground between traditional pharmaceuticals and no treatment at all? Fortunately, there are alternative medicines for ADHD that can be effective and are much safer than Ritalin and other traditional pharmaceutical drugs.

Natural Medicines

Rather that turning directly to Ritalin, individuals can look to natural and herbal treatments for ADHD. According to Natural Medicine for ADHD, some of the most effective herbs to treat ADHD are: "gingko biloba, skullcap, chamomile, gotu kola, and avena sativa." These herbal medicines calm the nervous system so that patients are able to focus on the task at hand without being constantly distracted by wandering thoughts and hyperactivity. Herbal treatments are a good alternative to pharmaceuticals because they do not have any adverse side effects or the health risks associated with Ritalin use.

Diet

Controlling the diet of an individual suffering from ADHD is another approach to treating and curing ADHD. Aside from reducing the intake of sugar and empty calories in those afflicted by ADHD it is important to consume the right foods to replace those calories. Foods that are high in fatty acids such as Omega-3 and Omega-6 are used to build nerve and brain tissues and as such support healthy growth and brain function. Foods that are rich in Omega-6 include vegetable oils and margarine. Foods that are rich in Omega-3 include flax seed, salmon, mackerel, and sardines.

Exercise

When used in conjunction with a well-balanced diet and herbal supplements, exercise can play an important role in controlling ADHD. Rather than allowing children to spend copious amounts of time in front of the television, computer, or video games it is crucial that they spend an adequate amount of time outside playing sports and exercising. Physical exercise helps children to stay fit and reduces the possibility that they will eat unhealthy foods out of boredom. It also helps to reduce the free radicals in the body and simply allows them to be more focused because they have less energy welling up inside of them.

Get an Expert Opinion

In order to create the right combination of herbal remedies, diet, and exercise for a child with ADHD it is important to consult a homeopathic doctor, physician and nutritionist. Working together a child's advocates can create a specialized plan to nurture the child and evaluate which approaches work best. It is also important to contact the child's teacher to monitor the success or failure of a particular treatment in an academic setting.

Warning

Before embarking on an alternative treatment regime for children with ADHD it is important to consult a physician. This is especially crucial before abruptly stopping any ADHD medication as it can create adverse effects and withdrawal for the child. Further, be sure to notify the child's doctor before beginning any type of herbal remedy treatments to make sure that the herbal remedy will not reduce the efficacy or conflict with other medication that the child may be taking.

Congestive heart failure takes place when the heart is unable to meet the demands of the body. Any form of heart disease can cause congestive heart failure. A person with CHF, in extreme cases, can have a difficult time exercising or handling normal daily living tasks. Unfortunately it is the most common cause of death in people older than the age of 65. However not everyone believes that Western medicine is the best way to treat CHF. There are effective alternative options as well.

Signs and Symptoms

Certain symptoms when seen together can be indicative of congestive heart failure. These symptoms include fatigue, intolerance to exercise, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, cough (when walking), excessive urination at night and protein in the urine, anorexia, swelling in extremities, anxiety, difficulty sleeping and rust colored sputum.

Causes of CHF

It is important to note that there are other causes to CHF outside of heart disease. If you are guilty of any of the following you are increasing your risk of developing congestive heart failure. These activities include smoking, alcoholism, pneumonia, influenza, not taking your prescription medications as directed, improper diet, being overweight, eating a diet high in fat.

Nutritional Therapy for CHF

Herbal medicine and nutritional therapy can have an effective impact on improving the strength of the heart and making it work more efficient. Here are a number of dietary recommendations and the recommended dosage.
    Antioxidants--Selenium (200 mcg/day), vitamin E (400 IU/day), vitamin C (1000 mg three times each day).
Essential Fatty Acids--iincludes fish oil, (1500 mg two times/day). This will help decrease inflammation.
Coenzyme Q10--antioxidant helps to increase the amount of oxygen going to the tissues and muscles. 30 to 50 mg two times a day is recommended.
Seasoning your food--Onions, garlic and ginger are excellent boosters to improved circulation. Increasing your fiber intake from vegetable and fruit sources, as well as vegetarian source of protein are recommended. You should also make sure that you are getting the potassium you need each day and decrease your salt intake.
Magnesium--mineral that many of us are deficient in to begin with. Magnesium helps to dilate the blood vessels. Get 500 mg each day.

Herbs

Herbs can be taken in a variety of forms such as in capsules, powders, teas, tinctures and glycerites. Here are a number of herbs that are beneficial for CHF treatment.
Hawthorn (Crataegus oxyacantha): increases blood vessel integrity; dose is 3 to 5 g. This dose is difficult to achieve in tea or tincture. Supplements or solid extract are used.
Mistletoe (Viscum album): protects against high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries, historically for exhaustion and nervousness
Rosemary (Rosemariana officinalis): increases coronary artery blood flow, used to stimulate digestion and relieve nervous tension
Lily of the valley (Convallaria majalis): specific for cardiac insufficiency; exceeding recommended doses may lead to nausea, vomiting, headache, stupor. Use no more than 30 drops per day."

Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a "non-toxic system of medicine" that professionals and lay persons use to treat a variety of illnesses and other health issues. This practice has been around for more than 200 years and can be found all over the world. Uses & Indications for Theanine

Uses & Indications for Theanine

L-theanine, or gamma-ethylamino-L-glutamic acid, is an amino acid which is derived from Camellia sinensis. Green, oolong and black tea is produced from the leaves of C. sinensis, a shrub native to Eastern Asia. L-theanine was first discovered in 1949 and is available as an herbal supplement. Reportedly, L-theanine is useful for stress relief, decreasing cholesterol levels, moderating the effects of caffeine, enhancing cancer-related treatment and enhancing the flavor of foods, as well as cosmetic use.

Stress Relief

According to NutriScience Innovations, L-theanine is linked to decreased stress levels. The amino acid increases the brain's levels of dopamine, a neurotransmitter which is linked to emotions. It also increases the levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. GABA is another neurotransmitter which has antianxiety effects, enhancing an overall feeling of well-being.

L-theanine provides a feeling of relaxation without inducing drowsiness. The amino acid encourages the production of alpha brain waves. Alpha brain waves are characterized by relaxation without any corresponding fatigue or sleepiness. It also may moderate stress and irritability related to premenstrual syndrome in women.

Cholesterol and Blood Pressure

According to NutriScience Innovations, theanine may lower LDL (low-density lipoprotein) and total cholesterol levels which are responsible for causing heart disease and atherosclerosis (thickening or hardening of the arteries). Additionally, by regulating the nervous system and brain, it is widely believed that L-theanine may also lower blood pressure levels.

Reducing Caffeine's Effects

L-theanine may help to moderate caffeine's effect on the body's central nervous system. According to NutriScience Innovations, mice injected with theanine experienced fewer caffeine-induced convulsions, diminished caffeine-related sleep problems and lower blood pressure levels after receiving high doses of caffeine.

Cancer

According to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, L-theanine is believed to enhance the effects of doxorubicin and idarubicin. According to a study completed at the University of Shizuoka in Japan, theanine amplifies the antitumor activity of the chemotherapeutic medications while helping to minimize medication-related toxicity.

Additional Uses

L-theanine is linked to increased immune response in the body and is reported to enhance the body's natural mechanism for fighting microbial infections.

According to Drugs.com, in 1964, Japan approved the use of L-theanine in all foods with the exception of baby/infant foods. It has since been added to herbal teas, ice cream, soda, chocolate and to green tea infusions (to which it lends a savory "umami" flavor).

L-theanine has also been widely used as a skin moisturizer and an added ingredient in cosmetics.

Safety

According to Drugs.com, despite widespread usage of L-theanine, no adverse effects have been reported. There is no safety concern associated with L-theanine use; however, patients with any hypersensitivity to the product should avoid using it.

How to Stop an Allergic Sneezing Fit Without Medication

When I was growing up, I had constant allergies. In the summer, many, many things in the outdoors would set me off. In the winter, dust and mold kept me reaching for the Kleenex. I was forever sneezing and blowing my nose. This culminated during a trip to Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands with my husband-to-be. We were at an outdoor restaurant and I was sneezing so hard I could barely eat my barbecued crab sandwich. Tears were streaming down my face, and the diners around me were starting to edge away. Finally, a kind gentlemen came over and told me what I should do about it. It sounded completely bizarre and I didn't believe him, but I also wanted to eat my lunch. So finally, I excused myself to the bathroom, tried what he suggested .... and it worked. Ever since then, it has been my secret weapon whenever allergies give me grief and I start a sneezing fit.

Instructions

    1

Though this cure can be done anywhere, it is easiest in a bathroom. Not only because it looks very strange, and bathrooms have a modicum of privacy, but because the sink is very handy. Step one, enter the bathroom and wash your hands.

    2

Turn on the faucet and cup your hands beneath it.

    3

Once you have a little pool of water in your cupped hands, dunk your nose in it until it is submerged. Hold it there as long as you can.

    4

Release the water. You may repeat if you would like. Especially if another sneeze escapes.

    5

Dry the outside of your nose with a paper towel, or whatever is handy in the bathroom. Or you could let it air dry. It may feel tender and tickly, but you will no longer be actively sneezing.

Home Remedies for a Resistant Yeast Infection

Home remedies for resistant yeast infections can range from changes in lifestyle to herbal supplements. Treatment for chronic yeast infections focuses on eliminating predisposed factors like prescription drugs, high-sugar foods, high-carbohydrate vegetables, milk products and foods with high levels of yeast. When used in conjunction with these diet and lifestyle changes, home remedies are a good alternative to traditional therapies.

Herbal tea

A good herbal home remedy to treat resistant yeast infections is to make a tea from the dried root of barberry or goldenseal. Steep 1 to 2 tbsp. of either dried herb in one cup of boiling water for 10 minutes. Strain and drink three times a day.

Echinacea

Echinacea is commonly used to treat infection and prevent colds. It is also useful in treating chronic or resistant yeast infections due to its ability to improve the level of white blood cells, which help fight infection. Try taking echinacea tincture using one dropper in one half cup of water. Take no more than four times a day for two weeks. If symptoms persist, see your physician.

Douching

Make a douche containing white-grape vinegar. Put 2 tbsp. of white-grape vinegar into one quart of warm water. Douche twice a day for one week. Your yeast infection symptoms should subside in one week. If symptoms persist, see your physician.

An alternative douching method for resistant yeast infections is to use the "sucking air" method. In this method, you can insert your choice of vinegar douche that you have mixed or 1 tbsp. of yogurt. Yogurt may be inserted using a small spoon or small spatula. Lay on your back in the bathtub, insert vinegar or yogurt, lift your legs in the air up over your head. This causes the vagina to open up and balloon, allowing more of the yogurt or douche to coat the vagina. Remain in this position for at least five minutes to allow the douche or yogurt to work.

Food and Lifestyle

Eliminate high-sugar foods from your diet. Reduce the number of foods you eat that contain high levels of yeast or carbohydrate because both of these can raise yeast levels in the body. Diabetics in particular must use caution when consuming high-sugar foods because blood-sugar levels are already elevated.

Beneficial bacteria like bifidus regularis and acidophilus can be taken in capsule form to increase levels of good bacteria in the body and help prevent an excess of yeast formation.

Avoid wearing tight, constrictive undergarments and choose cotton underwear over nylon or synthetics. Cotton fabric allows more air to circulate, helping keep the area dry.

If you are still plagued with resistant yeast infections, contact your physician for a more conventional treatment plan.

How to Relieve Nausea Without Medication

How to Relieve Nausea Without Medication

A simple home treatment may be all that is needed to treat nausea. Whether your queasiness is a result the 'stomach flu', motion sickness or some other non-life threatening problem, there are natural, home remedies for nausea that you can use as an alternative to medications. These techniques should be used in people four years and older.

Instructions

    1

Use an acupressure band. These are easily found in your local pharmacy, and are a common treatment for motion sickness.

    2

Use acupressure. Place your right index finger on the underside of your left wrist, about 1 1/2 inches from your hand. Apply moderate pressure for two to three minutes. Because pressure points are very small, it make take you a few times to locate the exact spot on your wrist. This form of acupressure can be repeated as needed. Another pressure point that may help relieve nausea is located between the thumb and forefinger. Again, moderate pressure for two to three minutes should help relieve that queasy feeling.

    3

Slowly dissolve a peppermint drop in your mouth, chew a piece of peppermint gum or sip some peppermint tea. If you don't have peppermint tea, dissolve a peppermint drop in a cup of tea. Peppermint may help decrease stomach contractions that could be causing your nausea.

    4

Take two teaspoons of any flavor non-carbonated syrup. The carbohydrates in the syrup can help calm your stomach.

    5

Take two ginger root capsules or steep a cup of tea with a piece of fresh ginger in it. Ginger ale can also help. Ginger has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for nausea.

Alternative Bone Cancer Treatment

Primary bone cancer (cancer originating in the bone) is relatively rare, affecting about 2,000 people in the United States annually. Standard treatment usually consists of chemotherapy, radiation and prescription drugs to protect the bones during treatment. Alternative therapies as a sole cancer treatment are controversial and are best used in conjunction with standard treatments. If you are interested in using natural therapies, it is best to seek out an oncologist knowledgeable about and open to integrating natural methods into your treatment plan. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the following treatments might be of benefit for bone cancer.

Supplements

Calcium citrate and vitamin D provide bone support; take 1,000 milligrams and 400 IU daily respectively. Probiotics support immunity and gastrointestinal health, both of which can be compromised by conventional cancer treatments; take as directed on the label. Omega-3 fatty acids fight inflammation and strengthen immunity. Take one to two capsules of fish oil or one tablesppon of oil one to three times a day. Vitamin C provides antioxidants and boosts immunity; take 500 to 1,000 milligrams up to three times a day. Lycopene provides antioxidant and anticancer activity; take 5 milligrams three times a day. Alpha lipoic acid and resveratrol are rich in antioxidants and fight inflammation; take 50 milligrams twice a day and 200 milligrams a day respectively. Glucosamine and chondroitin in a combination supplement supports bone and connective tissue. Use 500 to 1,000 milligrams three times a day with food. Coenyzme Q10 and melatonin support immunity. Use 200 milligrams and two to six grams respectively at bedtime.

Herbs

Green tea, reishi mushroom and cat's claw exhibit anticancer effects and strengthen the immune system; take 250 to 500 milligrams daily, 150 to 300 milligrams three times daily; and 20 milligrams three times daily respectively. Milk thistle provides detoxification support; take 80 to 160 milligrams three times a day. Fermented wheat germ extract contains cancer-fighting and immune-boosting properties. Dissolve one packet into a beverage once a day.

Homeopathy

Professional homeopaths might recommend the following treatments to address bone cancer. Homeopathy is a highly individualized system of medicine that bases treatments on a number of factors in addition to the main condition. Consult with a homeopath experienced in treating cancer if you are interested in making homeopathic remedies part of your treatment strategy.

Arnica Montana treats bruising and restlessness. Bryonia is best for fractures with stitching pains that worsen with movement. Eupatorium is for intense bone pain that worsens with movement and comes with stiffness and chills. Symphytum treats fractures that do not heal well and cause persistent pain.

Acupucture and Chiropractic Care

These treatments will not directly treat your bone cancer but can address problems associated with cancer and its treatments. Acupuncture is proven to alleviate nausea, vomiting, pain and shortness of breath. Chiropractors will not treat areas where bone cancer is present but can work on other parts of the body to relieve pain associated with this type of cancer.

Dietary Suggestions

Eating well is vital when you have cancer. Regularly consume foods like broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower as well as foods rich in antioxidants like berries, tomatoes and peppers. Make lean meats, tofu and beans your primary protein source and cut down on red, fatty meats. Soy milk promotes bone health.

Lemon Honey Oil Colon Detox

Lemon Honey Oil Colon Detox

Colon detoxification (detox) is an alternative medical therapy intended to remove waste and toxins from the colon and intestinal tract. There are a number of products and methods available for colon detox. A popular choice is the use of lemon, honey and oil.

Lemon honey oil detox is an all-natural recipe, free of any harsh chemicals.

History

Cleansing of the colon can be traced back to the Egyptians. They believed toxins formed as a result of decomposition in the intestines. The decomposed material then moves into the circulatory system causing ill-health. This process is considered "auto-intoxication", the idea that food enters the intestine and rots.

As advancements in the scientific community failed to show support of colon detox benefits, it fell out of favor. However, in recent years the practice of colon cleansing and detoxification has undergone a resurgence in the alternative medical community. The community claims there is anecdotal evidence of the benefits of colon cleansing and detox.

Things You'll Need

The lemon honey oil detox recipe is a variation of the Master Cleanse developed in 1941 by Stephen Burroughs. For it, you will need two tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice, one tablespoon of honey (preferably organic), one tablespoon of olive oil, ten ounces of distilled water and 1/10 tablespoon of cayenne pepper powder (optional).

Mix all ingredients and enjoy. There are several opinions on the duration and daily quantity you should consume. Strong proponents of the drink recommend consuming only this concoction for a week to seven days under the supervision of a qualified naturopath or herbalist. A more realistic approach often practiced is drinking one glass of the lemon honey oil detox drink in the morning on an empty stomach. This can be done safely on a daily basis. However, it is always advised to consult your physician before beginning any new diet regimen.

Benefits

Lemons are very high in vitamin C, which improves the body's ability to remove toxins. Herbalists believe that when taken regularly lemons act as a tonic to the liver and stimulates it to better perform its daily digestive and cleansing functions. Lemons are also believed to dissolve gallstones and are a superior body alkalizer.

Honey offers antioxidant and cleansing properties for our bodies. Its sweet taste also softens the bitterness of lemon juice.

Olive oil is thought to have a mild laxative effect, and cayenne pepper increases metabolism and suppresses hunger while your body is enjoying the cleansing process.

While the jury is still out on the value and necessity of colon cleansing and detoxification, it may be a wise choice to go with an all-natural option such as the lemon honey oil method.

How to Benefit from Green Bananas for Home Remedies

The banana is like no other fruit. It is actually the fruit of a giant herb. Each bunch of bananas can be up to fourteen bananas and weight up to 100 pounds. Both the skin and inner part of the banana can be eaten raw or cooked. Commonly sold while they are still green, there is recent evidence that eating green bananas has health benefits.

Instructions

    1

Add green bananas to your weight loss diet. The growing interest in green bananas is principally due to their ability help the body burn fat and beat hunger. Green bananas have a type of dietary fiber that helps the body feel satisfied while it burns fat.

    2

Eat green bananas as a source of low calorie carbs for diabetics. It is difficult for diabetics to get sufficient carbs without gaining weight. Green bananas are high in potassium, which provides an energy boost, but are lower in calories than other complex carbohydrates.

    3

Use green bananas as a source of beneficial "fiber." Green bananas contain short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which are indigestible to humans. This is very beneficial, because the indigestible parts of the banana pass through the stomach and lower intestine and benefit the large intestine, or colon. After soluble and insoluble fiber, SCFAs are thought of as the "third" fiber.

    4

Alleviate symptoms of shigellosis, a childhood disease that is common in the summer months. This disease is caused by the bacteria shigella, which infects the intestinal tract and causes vomiting and diarrhea. There is increasing scientific interest on the effect of green bananas on diarrhea. One study showed that consumption of mature green bananas dramatically decreased levels of mucus and blood in stools.

    5

Prevent colon Cancer with green bananas. Since short term fatty acids pass through the stomach and small intestine, they stimulate colonic blood flow and fluid and electrolyte intake. The role that SCFA's play in nourishing the tissues of the colon actively prevents cancer by encouraging normal growth and differentiation of cells.

How to Choose Gravity Boots

How to Choose Gravity Boots

Gravity boots are a device used during inversion therapy, where a patient hangs upside down to reduce spinal compression. While results are mixed on the benefits of inversion, some users believe this practice can help with a wide variety of medical problems. Depending on the model, gravity boots can be used alone or in conjunction with an inversion table. To find the best boots to meet your needs, consider the boot's design, shape, comfort and installation requirements.

Instructions

    1

Think about how you'll install your gravity boots. Some manufacturers design gravity boots for mounting only on an inversion table, while others are hung from overhead bars (similar to chin-up bars). Still others may come with ceiling or wall-mounted installation systems. Think about where you plan to install your boots and what type of supports your existing ceiling or walls will offer before making a purchase.

    2

Find the right size boots for your body. Most manufacturers sell gravity boots in two sizes, including a standard and an extra-large variety. Standard gravity boots will fit the average user, while users who are extra tall or who have large legs, feet or ankles should look into extra-larger sizes. Consult the various manufacturer's size charts for additional sizing recommendations.

    3

Look for safety buckles that will keep you secure, but are also easy to manipulate. Some gravity boots have a dual-locking system, where even if one lock comes loose, the boots will still keep you safe until you manually loosen the second lock on each buckle. Some lesser quality boots only have a single locking component, so you could potentially fall out of the boots if the buckle comes loose during use. Investigate different options and find a model that will keep you safe.

    4

Check the weight capacity of each unit. Find boots that are capable of supporting your body weight, and are also strong enough to support friends or family members that may also use your gravity boots. Check that the boots, buckles and mounting systems are all rated at the right weight class to support you safely.

    5

Decide whether you want boots that support your ankles only or your entire foot. This is largely a matter of personal preference, though some specific medical conditions may help users choose between these two options. Speak to your medical professional to decide on the best configuration for your body and your health goals.

    6

Decide what material and boot design will provide the greatest level of comfort. Some gravity boots are made from foam and molded plastic, while others are made of padded metal. Choose from stiffer or more flexible materials, depending on your comfort level, and ensure that padding will cover the entire boot in a wide variety of positions to maximize your comfort.

How to Treat Bed Sores Using Home Remedies

How to Treat Bed Sores Using Home Remedies

For a person in the hospital or a nursing home, bed sores can be a problem. Bed sores happen when someone is bed ridden and doesnt move around enough. Bed sores mainly occur in people who are paralyzed, handicapped, or disabled. A person who stays in the same position in bed without moving around enough will have ulcer like sores appear on the bony parts of their body. Bed sores are also known as pressure sores because they appear when there is too much pressure on their body from staying in one position too long. Even if someone is paralyzed, disabled, or handicapped, and in a nursing home, they should have help moving around enough to keep pressure off of the body. Unfortunately, bed sores are a common problem in nursing homes because the patients are often neglected and left laying in bed not able to move. There are natural things a person with bed sores can do to heal the sores.

Instructions

    1

Mix milk of magnesia and iodine in a bowl and set the mixture off to the side for a while. After about 30 minutes, apply the milk of magnesia and iodine mixture to the bed sores. Apply the mixture several times a day as needed and after a few days the bed sores will start to heal.

    2

Mix together a little bit of sugar and honey and apply it to the bed sores. Apply the mixture twice a day.

    3

Mix together 2 tbsp. of honey and 1 tbsp. of rhubarb juice or beet juice. You can use a shaker for this mixture or mix it up in a bowl. Using a shaker will mix it up better. You can also add some flour to thicken it up if you think it is too thin. Apply this mixture to the bed sores, cover the wound with a bandage and change it daily.

    4

Clean the area where the bed sores are and then apply some calendula or aloe vera cream. Apply the calendula or aloe vera cream once or twice a day, depending on how bad the bed sores are. The calendula or aloe vera cream will soothe the bed sores and heal them.

    5

Put some Lysol in a spray bottle and spray all over the area of the body where the bed sores are. If the bed sore is infected, the Lysol will kill any germs that might be in the sore and heal the bed sores.

Alternative Treatment for Polyarticular Arthritis

Polyarticular arthritis indicates arthritis is present in four or more joints. You might have rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which is caused by the immune system's mistakenly attacking joint tissue, or osteoarthritis (OA), which is caused by age-related breakdown of the joints. Both conditions cause pain, swelling, tenderness and stiffness. The University of Maryland Medical Center and alternative medicine expert Dr. Andrew Weil offer several suggestions for natural symptom relief.

Using Alternative Therapy

Alternative treatments for polyarticular arthritis can be used as a complement to standard therapies or as a replacement for them. It is very important to talk with a health-care professional experienced in using alternative medicine, ideally for your specific condition. This is especially important if you choose to forego conventional medicine.

Talk to your doctor before you start using natural supplements. While supplements are generally safe, as with drugs, they can interact with other treatments and are not appropriate if you have certain health conditions. Working with an experienced health-care provider can help you design an effective and safe treatment strategy.

You do not need to take every supplement listed here as some offer similar benefits; this is where working with a experienced provider is beneficial. In order to receive optimum benefit from alternative medicine, you must address all aspects of your health and not focus just on your condition. You must commit to a healthful diet and other lifestyle choices that contribute to overall well-being.

Reducing Inflammation

Reducing inflammation is very important for managing symptoms of arthritis. Inflammation triggers and worsens joint damage. Including and excluding certain foods is a powerful way to combat inflammation. Foods that trigger the release of inflammatory chemicals include saturated fats found in animal products, foods made with white flour and sugar. Foods that fight inflammation include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, whole soy foods, cold-water fish, nuts and seeds. Use liberal amounts of garlic, onions, turmeric and ginger in your cooking.

Certain supplements have anti-inflammatory properties. The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests trying SAMe (100 to 200mg before breakfast), omega-3 fatty acids in the form of fish oil or flax seed supplements (take one or two capsules or 1 tbsp. twice daily), bromelain (40mg three times a day), turmeric (300mg three times a day) or devil's claw (200mg twice a day).

Symptom Relief Through Alternative Treatment Modalities

According to the University of Maryland's website, acupuncture has been shown to provide significant pain relief and improved mobility and joint function for people with OA. Anecdotal evidence indicates it might be useful for RA, but scientific evidence is lacking. You will require several treatment sessions to achieve maximum benefit from acupuncture. Spinal manipulations by an experienced chiropractor might provide pain relief and increased range of motion, but scientific proof is lacking for this, as well.

If you are interested in using these treatments, it is important to remember that one session is usually not enough to produce significant change. These treatments may or may not work for you personally but if you want to try them, give them a chance to work. You will need multiple sessions and the practitioner will suggest a treatment schedule based on her assessment of your condition.

Stress Reduction

Engaging in mind/body techniques is important for reducing stress and other negative emotions. This can improve general well-being and ease the pain and other symptoms of these conditions. Experiment with t'ai chi, yoga, meditation, deep breathing, positive visualization and anything else that you think will help you feel better.

How Can Bowen Therapy Assist Constipation?

Bowen therapy is a hands-on holistic, therapeutic practice known to alleviate pain and relax the body. Though Bowen therapy does not replace professional medical treatment, it can assist with the relief of constipation.

Effects

According to an article in Positive Health Online, Dr. Gowrie Motha, an obstetrician, says Bowen therapy is helpful for easing constipation in adults as well as relieving colicky babies. When the human body is relaxed, as it is during Bowen therapy sessions, the lower gastrointestinal region can relax as well, allowing an individual to have a bowel movement.

Function

During a Bowen therapy treatment, the practitioner uses his thumbs and fingers to manipulate the client's inner tissues and muscles. Gently performing Bowen therapy in the gastrointestinal region of the body eases the colon and may unblock obstructed areas.

Considerations

Bowen therapy is not a miraculous solution to constipation. It may require two or three treatments before the client notices a difference.

Natural Treatment for Chronic Sinusitis & Fungus

Natural Treatment for Chronic Sinusitis & Fungus

Sinusitis is characterized by swollen, inflamed sinuses. A fungal infection can trigger this condition. You have chronic sinusitis if symptoms last longer than 12 weeks or if you get it on a recurring basis. Several natural treatments can address fungal sinusitis.

Fighting Fungus

Several natural supplements demonstrate antifungal properties; they include grapefruit seed exract, garlic, pau darco, green tea and cats claw. Consult with a health care provider experienced in natural medicine for guidance on dosages and proper use.

Reducing Inflammation

Certain herbs reduce inflammation including bromelain (also relieves swelling), turmeric, boswellin and ginger.

Mucus and Congestion

The following treatments might be good to thin mucus and ease congestion according to the University of Maryland Medical Center: N-acetylcysteine, eucalyptus oil supplements, commercial preparation Sinupret, hepar sulfuricum, kali bichromicum, mercurius, pulsatilla, silicea and spigelia.

Alternative Treatment Modalities

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, research indicates acupuncture shows benefit for sinusitis while chiropractic care might help with sinus drainage.

Working with a Knowledgeable Practitioner

Consult with a health care provider experienced in using alternative medicine. She can offer guidance on dosages, what supplements are appropriate and inappropriate for you and where to find high quality products.

Homemade Colloidal Silver Generator

Colloidal silver is nature's antibiotic. Many call it a hospital in a bottle. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, praised silver for its "beneficial healing and anti-disease properties." According to the "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," it has been shown to be effective against more than 650 disease-causing organisms, including Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria and the fungus candida albicans. With a little skill and effort you create your own supply of colloidal silver and tap into its remarkable benefits.

What CS Is and How It Works

In 1975, homemade colloidal silver became a reality when physicist Bob Beck built the first silver generator. Colloidal silver is generated through electrolysis when an electric current travels between silver rods immersed in water. This process suspends clusters of silver atoms in the water. The suspended silver is able to suffocate harmful organisms by blocking their access to oxygen.

The "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" describes colloidal silver as "a Natural Antibiotic and Disinfectant that Destroys bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites." Silver has been used for this purpose since the Greek and Roman empires, who stored liquids in silver containers and ate with silver utensils. In early America, pioneer women put silver dollars in milk, to retard spoilage, and cowboys put them in water barrels, to make the water safe for drinking.

Building a CS Generator

You can make a colloidal silver generator with parts from your local Radio Shack. Connect four nine-volt batteries in series by snapping the negative terminals to the positive ones. You'll end up with one free positive and one free negative terminal.

Bridge the probes of a multimeter with a 33k ohm resister, by looping each end around one of the probes. Bend one end of two silver wires into a u shape, and use an alligator clip lead to connect the free negative battery terminal to the bent end of one of these wires. Use two more alligator clip leads to connect the free positive battery terminal to the positive probe of the multimeter, and the negative probe of the multimeter to the bent end of the remaining silver wire.

Adjust the multimeter display sensitivity to 200 volts DC. When the silver wires are separated, the multimeter should display zero volts. When the wires are crossed, the display should read about 36 volts. If your readings are similar, your generator is ready for use.

Making the CS Solution

Fill a clean glass with distilled water, and put the silver wires on opposite sides of the glass, by hooking the u shaped ends over the rim. If your multimeter reads more than four volts, the distilled water has too many impurities, and you should try another brand.

When the multimeter reading climbs to 30 volts, periodically shine your a red laser through the water to see if the beam is visible. If it isn't, let the process continue. When the beam is visible in a well lit room, your colloid's potency is ideal, and you can remove the electrodes and turn off the multimeter.

If the water turns yellow, and a gray film appears on the bottom of the glass, you didn't stop soon enough. You can still pour this solution through a coffee filter, and use it without any harmful effects.

Using the CS Solution

In his book, "Use of Colloids in Health," Dr Henry Crooks discussed his experiments with colloidal silver and his discovery that "No known microbe lasts more than 6 minutes in a dilution of as little as 5 parts per million." According to Mark Etherton at www.DreamWeaver.Ltd.uk, you can verify this by leaving two bowls of muesli with milk, on a window sill. Spray one of the bowls in the morning and evening with a colloidal silver solution. Leave the other one alone. After several weeks, the untreated bowl will be spoiled rotten, but the treated bowl will have no bacterial growth.

Now that you know what CS can do, you'll want to use it regularly. You can take four teaspoons a day to maintain good health, or as much as three glasses a day, if you're suffering from an acute viral, parasitic, or bacterial condition. Apply the CS topically to cuts, sores, rashes, and other skin ailments, to get quick relief. Colloidal silver can also be used in a nebulizer, to treat lung ailments. Don't forget to spray it on countertops, produce and anywhere else that germs congregate. The sky's the limit!

How to Cope with Sacroiliac Joint Pain

How to Cope with Sacroiliac Joint Pain

Roughly speaking, the sacroiliac joint is the connection between your spine and hip. The sacroiliac joint (also called SI joint) acts as a shock absorber and has little movement. An injury to the joint, which could be caused by a fall, can result in long lasting lower back pain. These tips can help you cope with the back pain. Always follow your doctor's recommendations.

Instructions

    1

Sleeping. Lying in bed can be the most difficult time for someone suffering for sacroiliac joint pain. They can not lie on the sore side and in most cases, can not lie on their back or stomach because rising from a back or stomach position can send sharp pain to the sore hip. To make sleeping a little more comfortable, add a couple inches of foam to the bed. Sleeping on the uninjured side is a given. If remaining on your uninjured side is difficult, try sleeping on a couch where you can press your back against the back of the couch. You can also try placing a thin pillow or folded towels between your knees and down to your ankles to lift the injured side slightly, keeping it more aligned with your spine, to help reduce pain.

    2

Medication. The use of over-the-counter NSAIDs, like ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen (Aleve) can be extremely helpful. Read the labels; there are risks with taking NSAIDS, particularly over a long time. However, the benefits of using an NSAID to reduce pain and inflammation to give you more mobility is a very important consideration. For severe cases, your doctor may prescribe pain killers and muscle relaxants, or a stronger NSAID.

According to Dr. Ranit Mishori, a Washington, D.C. based doctor and writer for Parade Magazine, it's usually more effective to take medications "around the clock" (every few hours) than to wait for an episode of pain before the next dose.

    3

Heat and cold therapy. Take advantage of heat and cold therapy. The type of pad that is filled with gel and can be kept in the freezer will be easier to use and is worth the investment. Buy two, one to keep in the freezer and one to be able to heat in the microwave. The gel pack also takes away concern of falling asleep with an electric heating pad since the gel pack will slowly return to room temperature. When the pain is at its worst, apply an ice pack to help reduce inflammation. Heat can be used to help relax muscles, and is a good thing to use at bedtime. Lie down on your side and lay the pack across the painful hip, leaving it on for up to 30 minutes. If possible, try to establish a routine of a mid-day lie-down break of at least 30 minutes, applying either heat or cold. If you have a small heat/cold pack, you can tuck it inside clothing whether or not you are lying down.

    4

Physical Therapy. Learning what exercises are best for you to help tone back and abdominal muscles is quite beneficial. If you are unable to see a physical therapist, check out websites for back exercises directed toward low back pain. Just keep in mind that if the exercise hurts, do NOT continue doing it.

    5

Joint restraint. Using a sacroiliac belt when performing household chores may help to reduce over-extending the joint. The belt can be worn under or over clothes.

    6

Riding in the car. The jiggling of the car, and especially a sudden turn or hitting bumps can be excruciating. Use seat padding and if a passenger, use pillows on both sides of your body to help reduce and cushion movement. In addition, take along a heat or cold pack and don't forget pain medication.

    7

Joint injection. A pain management specialist can inject a numbing solution and anti-inflammatory into the joint. Sounds painful, but it's actually a less painful experience than getting a shot in your arm. The results can be dramatic, leaving you completely or almost pain free. However, this is not a cure, nor will the affects last indefinitely.

How to Use Saw Palmetto to Treat Hormone Imbalances

How to Use Saw Palmetto to Treat Hormone Imbalances

Native to North America, saw palmetto is a palm plant that has been used for thousands of years to soothe and treat various medical maladies. Recent evidence suggests it has significant effects on your body's natural hormone production, and alternative medicine specialists often encourage patients to use it as a natural alternative for treating hormone imbalances.

Instructions

    1

Approach your doctor or an alternative medicine expert for an explanation of how saw palmetto can be used to treat hormone imbalances. Basically, saw palmetto is believed to affect your body's production of both testosterone and estrogen. If you have incorrect proportions of either hormone, saw palmetto might balance the two.

    2

Get your doctor to perform tests to determine the level of your hormone imbalances. This will, in turn, determine what your daily dosage of saw palmetto should be. Daily dosages usually fall between 160 mg. and 320 mg.

    3

Ask for the help of a store clerk if you aren't sure how to read the labels of the different brands of saw palmetto that are commercially available. The amount of active ingredients differs from brand to brand.

    4

Use saw palmetto daily, as directed by your doctor or alternative health expert, to treat hormone imbalances. Remember the common side effects associated with saw palmetto, such as stomach discomfort, bowel movement disorders, nausea and halitosis. Many users do not experience any of these side effects. Any side effects usually abate within a few days.

    5

Have your hormone levels monitored by your doctor after you commence your saw palmetto treatment regimen. Continue or discontinue use as directed by your doctor. Note the extremely rare but potentially serious side effects which may be linked to saw palmetto usage. These include heartbeat irregularities, pancreatitis, liver inflammation, arrhythmia, hypertension and chest pain.

Alternatives to Anticoagulant Drugs

Anticoagulant drugs are often prescribed by a doctor to help prevent clotting in your blood. These drugs are commonly prescribed to fight the formation of pulmonary embolisms, deep vein thrombosis, cardiovascular conditions, and strokes. There are some all natural herbs that can be consumed as anticoagulant drug alternatives.

Anticoagulant Herbals

In "The New Healing Herbs," Michael Castlemen explains that there are several herbs that offer anticoagulant properties. Some are garlic, ginger, turmeric, and white willow. Castlemen warns that if you have surgery planned, you must cease using the herbal remedies at least 14 days before your procedure, to prevent excessive bleeding and issues with healing and recovery.

Garlic

Garlic, when regularly consumed as a supplement, helps to manage cholesterol levels, diminishes platelet aggregation for improved blood flow, and helps to lower your blood pressure. This herb should not be consumed if you are using aspirin, Plavix, indomethacin, warfin, and dipyridamole; it can intensify the medication's effects. Consume garlic capsules at a dosage of two 200 milligram tablets three times a day to help thin blood and prevent blood clotting.

Ginger

The consumption of ginger also naturally provides you with anticoagulant agents. Ginger helps control cholesterol levels, slows the process of blood clotting, and protects blood vessels from developing blockages that might lead to cardiovascular problems. There is no indication that the use of ginger intensifies the properties of prescribed anticoagulants, but you should take care to consult a physician. You can take 2000 milligrams of ginger per day, divided into doses of 500 milligrams four times daily, to help prevent blood clotting issues.

Turmeric

Turmeric is an herb that contains curcumin, which helps to diminish inflammation and hinder blood platelets trying to clump together. Turmeric also has antioxidants, which promote healthy cell growth. You can consume 600 milligrams of turmeric in capsule form three times a day to hinder blood clotting issues.

White Willow

White Willow has natural blood thinning agents and should not be used in conjunction with prescribed anticoagulant medications. This herb can be consumed as a tea three to four times each day by steeping one or two teaspoons of dried bark in 8 ounces of hot water for a period of 15 minutes. You can also consume 240 milligrams of this herb in capsule form daily.

Safety Measures

All of the listed herbs have natural blood thinning properties. They should probably not be used if you are already taking anticoagulants; they could intensify the effects of such medications. When in doubt, speak with your physician first before consuming any herbal remedies to avoid potential dangerous drug interactions.

How to Drink Less Caffeine

Many people are addicted to the caffeine in coffee, tea, soft drinks and chocolate. Though it seems harmless, studies show that high doses of caffeine can bring risks of miscarriage, fertility problems, tacky-arrhythmia, high cholesterol and panic attacks. Other study results showed that high daily doses of caffeine may raise risks of osteoporosis, breast disease, high blood pressure and ulcers. If you are drinking more than four cups of coffee or tea or soft drinks a day, you are getting too much caffeine. Your goal should be two cups of caffeinated beverage or less per day. By making this reduction, you will survive caffeine withdrawal and allow yourself to find other alternatives.

Instructions

    1

Understand that surviving caffeine withdrawal can tricky because caffeine is so readily available. Caffeine withdrawal symptoms include headaches, depression, concentration problems and cravings. These symptoms usually subside after 2 to 4 days. Usually, after you have been drinking less caffeine for about a week, you won't miss it, because the body adjusts to your new habits. The best way to adjust to caffeine withdrawal is to follow your plan a little bit at a time. If you start to experience headaches or other withdrawal symptoms, have a small amount of caffeine. Weaning yourself away from it gradually has proven to be the best approach.

    2

Reduce your intake of coffee, tea and soft drinks. Try to cut back on the amount of caffeine that you consume by at least 25 percent each week. You will soon have eliminated it from your diet completely, and will remain withdrawal-symptom-free.

    3

Practice alternatives to drinking caffeine. Caffeine-free beverages are plentiful. Try substitutes like decaffeinated coffee, herbal tea, skim milk, juice, and water.Take up a hobby to keep your mind occupied. Supplant your caffeine habit with exercise. For a quick energy boost, take a walk for about 20 minutes. If it is impossible for you to get along without the cup of coffee, try to save it for times of real desperation.

Uses for Castor Oil

If you believe in folk remedies, castor oil is a wonder drug. The late psychic, Edgar Cayce, believed in its healing powers. William A. McGarey, MD, followed Cayce's recommendations to treat thousands of patients, documented in a 1994 book, "The Oil That Heals: A Physician's Successes with Castor Oil Treatments." Castor oil applied topically can improve circulation, relieve pain, reduce inflammation, heal tissues and organs, and stimulate the body's natural immune responses.

Castor Oil Packs

According to Dr. McGarey's anecdotal evidence, castor oil packs effectively treat the body's aches and pains and heal wounds more quickly. To make a pack, fold several thicknesses of flannel wool small enough to cover the body part, soak them in warm castor oil, and apply the pack to the problematic area. Cover the pack with plastic to keep the oil from staining anything, then cover the plastic with a heating pad or hot water bottle. Wrap the whole works in a towel to retain the heat and help the oil absorb into the skin. Wear the pack and relax for 45 minutes to an hour, then remove the pack and rinse the area. Repeat this three days in a row, skip three days, then follow this schedule until you feel better.

The pack can be stored in an airtight jar in the refrigerator and reused until the cloth gets dirty.

Benefits

All parts of the castor plant are toxic, but the oil pressed from its seeds has been ingested by people for centuries to cure constipation. While we know the dangers of that today and have myriad alternative laxatives, castor oil still has many topical uses.

According to Rabbi Gabriel Cousens, MD, of the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center, castor oil is sold in Russian health products to make hair grow thicker and shinier and to soothe irritated eyes.

A few drops of castor oil applied directly to open sores, pimples or puncture wounds can speed healing and help prevent infection. Castor oil is an effective moisturizer, better for your lips than commercial balms that contain petroleum and wax. To get rid of a corn, rub castor oil on it three times a day---morning, evening, and before bed---and keep the area covered with an adhesive bandage. The oil will soften the corn and eventually make it disappear.

Background

Castor oil is largely composed of an unsaturated fat called rinoleic acid, which is known to inhibit the growth of mold, yeast, bacteria and viruses. This makes the oil peculiarly effective as a healing agent.

Castor oil therapies have been around since ancient times in India, China, Persia, Egypt, Africa, Greece and Rome. It was known as Palma Christi, or the "Hand of Christ."

Seasickness Remedy

Seasickness is an extremely unpleasant condition that can sap the life out of you. It can keep you feeling nauseous and sink a good time at sea. One of several remedies to stop seasickness should help you get back to normal.

Ginger

Take ginger root (1 to 4 grams) 12 to 24 hours before leaving shore. This herb soothes nausea; pregnant women who suffer morning sickness find relief taking ginger. Ginger ale also can help to reduce nausea when you are on a boat. Try teaming the ginger ale with saltine crackers to stop nausea.

Dramamine

Over the counter (OTC) medications such as Dramamine can help reduce your seasickness. Antihistamines such as Benadryl can also help. These medications help by dilating blood vessels in your inner ear. This seems to dull the effects of the motion of the ship on your inner ear. (Seasickness stems from the balance center in the inner ear. The brain receives signals from your eyes, which don't agree with the signals coming from your inner ear. When these signals don't agree, seasickness or motion sickness can result).

Vitamotion

Vitamotion, an over-the-counter medication which contains Vitamin B6, dimenhydrinate and ginger, is a spray. People susceptible to motion sickness or seasickness spray this into their mouths. Capillaries in the mouth take the medication into the blood stream almost immediately. Because this product contains ginger, it will work on your stomach and help to reduce the nausea of seasickness.

Queasy Drops

Queasy Drops were originally formulated for pregnant women suffering from morning sickness. These nausea-quelling lollipops and lozenges, called Preggie Pops, contain herbs which help relieve nausea. Each Preggie Pop or Queasy Drop is made with its own essential oil (lavender, ginger or mint). Available flavors include cinnamon, papaya, sour lemon, ginger, cola, peppermint, green tea with lemon and green apple.
These drops are available in adult and children's sizes as lollipops and lozenges. The manufacturer (Three Lollies) recommends you take the first Queasy Drop before leaving the dock and then sucking on more throughout the day. There is no danger that you will overdose on these drops as the amount of essential oil added is very small. You may need to experiment with the different flavors to see which one works best for you.

Uses of Algae as a Nutraceutical

Uses of Algae as a Nutraceutical

If you enjoy eating sushi, use an Irish moss cough syrup, or take spirulina supplements, you are consuming algae. Algae comes in a variety of forms, from complex ocean algaes, such as kelp, to free-floating organisms, like spirulina found on freshwater ponds. Many species of algae are nutraceutical, meaning they possess nutritional as well as medicinal or pharmacological properties, and offer great health-promoting benefit when consumed as vegetables or nutritional supplements.

Spirulina

Spirulina is a blue-green algae used traditionally as a source of food in South America. Today, spirulina is found in health food shops around the world, marketed as a rich source of nutrients, such as protein, iron, B complex vitamins, microminerals and antioxidants. In a study published in "Cellular & Molecular Immunology" in 2011 by the University of California, spirulina was found to reduce iron-deficient anemia and improve immune response in elderly participants. Through these actions, spirulina can help you build resistance to infections and improve energy levels.

Dulse

This seaweed was traditionally gathered from coastlines along Ireland and North America and is still consumed for its health and nutritional benefits today. Traditionally used to treat scurvy, parasites and constipation, research shows dulse may possess added medicinal qualities. In a study published in "Food and Chemical Toxicology" in 2005 by Ryerson University, extracts of dulse were found to have significant antioxidant and antiproliferative actions, and consuming dulse may protect against cancer, cardiovascular disease and free radical damage.

Bladderwrack

Bladderwrack, also known as Fucus, is a species of brown kelp used in traditional herbal medicine for stimulating the thyroid gland and reducing goitres. Extracts of bladderwrack are rich in the micromineral iodine and thyroid hormones such as di-Iodothyronine, providing nutrients required by the thyroid gland to support metabolism throughout the body. Kerry Bones, herbalist and author of "Clinical Guide to Blending Liquid Herbs," states that bladderwrack is used as a thyroid tonic, a natural weight loss stimulant and an antirhuematic for arthritic conditions.

Irish Moss

Irish Moss, also known as Carragheen, is a small reddish-purple seaweed found on coasts throughout Britain, North America and Europe. Extracts of Irish moss are used in traditional herbal medicine as a tonic for coughs and colds, with Irish moss lollies and cough syrups still available in the market today. In a study published in "PloS Pathogens" in 2006 by the US National Cancer Institute, researchers found carrageenan, an active chemical of Irish moss, significantly inhibited the growth of the human papilloma virus (HPV). Carrageenan successfully stopped viral particles from binding to cells and compared favorably with standard pharmaceutical treatments.

Nori

Nori is used in Japanese cuisine to wrap sushi rolls and is distinct with its dark purple coloring and salty-sweet taste. A rich source of beta-carotene, vitamin C, calcium, potassium, iodine and essential fatty acids, nori is densely nutritious and supports sushi in being a healthy food choice. Medical research shows nori can help allergies and hypersensitivities. In a study published in "Bioscience, Biotechnology and Biochemistry" in 2005 by the Japanese Fisheries Research Agency, a chemical from nori, called porphyran, was found to reduce edema and inhibit the release of allergy-mediating chemicals, such as IgE and interferon, in animals.

How to Use Essential Oils to Reduce Cellulite

The fight to reduce cellulite is one battle that many women are willing to fight. They are so willing to try anything that many have wound up wrapping themselves in cellophane wrap. Some go as far as having plastic surgery to remove this unsightly flesh. Here is how you can use essential oils to help reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Instructions

    1

Choose oils wisely. When choosing essential oils for cellulite reduction, make sure you have chosen to purchase from a reputable company and that you are purchasing quality oils.

    2

Choose essential oils that will work to moisturize and soften the skin, making it plumper. This plumping will make the skin look fresher and fill in the dimples. Choose oils such as lemon, juniper, lavender or grapefruit.

    3

Mix the oils. Before mixing the essential oils, you must first add a carrier oil as the base. Mix no more than four essential oils together at a time, using only three drops of each. Apply the combination to your skin daily after a shower or bath for best results.

    4

Treat yourself. Giving yourself an oil treatment will work to stimulate your skin and help to renew old cells. You can really treat yourself by using a handheld massager to massage the oils into your skin, giving you deeper penetration. The massage and oil treatment works together to give a smoother appearance.

    5

Add your mixture to bath water and take a nice long relaxing soak.

    6

Eat healthy and exercise. Combine essential oils with a good exercise program and a healthy diet for best results.

How to Sleep Better With Natural Remedies

Cant sleep? Youre not alone. Millions of Americans have difficulty falling (and staying) asleep. Insomnia is one of the most common sleep disorders affecting Americans today. The good news is that there are easy, natural ways to tackle insomnia. Here are some tips to help you get a good night's sleep

Instructions

How to Sleep Better With Natural Remedies

    1

Drink a cup of chamomile tea before bedtime. Its a mild, safe sedative that will help to give you a restful sleep. Chamomile has been used for a number of years as a remedy for stress, anxiety, and insomnia. Another great option: Silent Night tea from Natures Way can be very helpful.

    2

Try other herbs. California poppy, passionflower, and valerian will calm you before bedtime. Research shows that kava kava is also a good relaxant. If stress or anxiety is one of the reasons for your insomnia, this herb will help you develop better sleep patterns.

    3

Take a hot bathnot a showeran hour before bedtime. Another good idea: Put several drops of a soothing essential oil such as chamomile in the bath water. Or try applying a lavender lotion to your body just before bedtime. Aromatherapy is growing in popularity as an effective treatment for insomnia. Also, English lavender has the ability to calm the mind and induce deeper, higher-quality sleep.

    4

Taking five milligrams of melatonin one hour before bedtime will help with occasional sleeplessness. It's one of the best remedies for insomnia, experts say. As we age, our bodies produce far less melatonin than when we were younger.

    5

Also a good idea: Spend at least an hour to relax and unwind. Learn to put worries out of your mind. Recreate a pleasurable time in your life and live it in your mind. For example, visualize yourself at the beach. Hear the waves crashing against the shore. The use of imagery is really helpful.

How to Treat Cataracts with Herbal Remedies

How to Treat Cataracts with Herbal Remedies

A cataract is a clouding and hardening of the lens of the eye, causing muscle spasms, weakness and loss of vision. It is a reversible condition that affects about 5 million people each year and is common among those 60 to 70 years of age and older. Cataracts are commonly treated by surgery. However, the procedure usually must be repeated in a few years. It is possible, with the use of herbs and natural remedies, to manage cataracts. It's also been reported that the condition may be reversed with natural therapies. Read more for help.

Instructions

Diet

    1

Eliminate fast food and any foods rich in saturated fats, sugar and high amounts of sodium from your diet. Replace them with whole foods rich in magnesium such as shellfish, whole grains, molasses, eggs and green vegetables. Magnesium promotes healthy blood and muscle function, a common deficiency in those who suffer from cataracts.

    2

Drink 1 cup of green tea upon rising each morning. Green tea is loaded with health benefits and acts as an antioxidant and muscle enhancer. It also promotes cell rejuvenation and is believed to aid in strong eyesight.

    3

Take 100 mg of bilberry extract with breakfast. Bilberry extract is a powerful herb high in flavonoids, tannins and anthocyanidins, which work together to help fight infection, strengthen the blood and muscles and help the lenses of the eye adapt to changes in light.

    4

Drink a 12-ounce glass of carrot juice with lunch. Carrot juice contains beta carotene, which helps the body produce vitamin A, which is essential for strong eye function. Also, eat two handfuls of spinach for lunch and dinner. Spinach is also rich in vitamin A and promotes healthy muscles, which may have been weakened due to cataracts.

    5

Take 2 Tbsp of crushed kelp before going to bed. Kelp is a sea green rich in vitamins and minerals. Its health benefits have been linked to healthy skin, blood, muscles and eyes. Dried sea greens can be bought in bulk at most health food stores and at some supermarkets.

Body Care and Exercise

    6

Sit in a sauna or steam bath for 20 to 30 minutes each day for two weeks. If you do not have access to a sauna or steam room, take a hot bath and add 10 to 15 drops of fir or eucalyptus oil to the water. The steam from the essential oils will help clean your pores so your body can rid itself of toxins through the skin and stimulate your lungs for healthy blood flow.

    7

Get a chiropractic adjustment at least once a week or as directed, for one month. Many health issues can be drastically improved by having your body adjusted. Misaligned muscles and bones are often the cause of an array of health conditions.

    8

Stretch your muscles and joints each morning and before going to bed each night. Stretching promotes healthy blood flow and breathing and will prepare you for your day.

How to Evaluate Natural Medical Treatments

How to Evaluate Natural Medical Treatments

When your doctor gives you a prescription, you trust her education and her expertise. Unfortunately, the television, Internet and our local supermarkets are full of natural medical treatments which do not come with a doctor's recommendation. While this does not mean that the treatment is not valid, it does mean that it requires more evaluation.

Instructions

    1

Notice whether the information about a natural medical treatment is based on credible sources. Websites which are created by major universities, medical centers or governmental agencies have the most credibility. It is a good idea to look for the Health on the Net (HON) Foundation logo as well, as these sites have agreed to a code of conduct which requires scientifically backed information.

    2

Look for reviews of the product performed by qualified medical professionals. Reviews by consumers, personal points of view or evidence stated without back up are not credible and the product should be questioned.

    3

Search several sources on the Internet or in medical journals before you use a natural medical treatment. If you simply cannot find more than two or three sources which back up the item's claim, there is reason to doubt the treatment.

    4

Beware of jargon such as "Guaranteed satisfaction or your money back," "Miracle cure" or "New discovery," as these terms are used to awe consumers but do not prove that the treatment is valid and useful.

    5

Be skeptical of products which claim to heal a large variety of ailments and treat multiple symptoms. Remember if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

    6

Talk to a doctor or naturopath about a natural medical treatment before you begin. A professional will help you to evaluate the credibility of claims as well as contraindication of the medicine.

Low Light Laser Treatment

Low-light or low-level laser therapy works by using a light source that generates a wavelength that will produce a photochemical reaction in the body's cells. This silent, cool light is thought to work in a variety of ways on many medical conditions be means of muscle relaxation, increased endorphins and serotonin, improved circulation, increased anti-inflammatory effects and improved lymphatic flow, according to Methodsofhealing.com.

For Hair Loss

By using a specific wavelength of light, blood supply to the scalp can be improved which will send more nutrients to the hair follicles and encourage the growth of new healthy hair, according to Docshop.com.

Low-level laser hair restoration therapy accomplishes this by enhancing cell activity at the site of the problem. The wavelength used also encourages tissue repair and can help speed the healing of the scalp following hair transplant.

Pain Relief

According to The Advantage Laser Clinic, the Food and Drug Administration has approved low light laser therapy for the experimental treatment of chronic pain. These lasers use billions of photons of light, which are transformed by the body into chemical energy. The body uses this energy to repair itself and begins healing and reduced inflammation associated with pain.

Low-light lasers are often used to treat back, neck, shoulder and hip pain as well as arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome and more.

Wound Healing

The low-light laser can effectively speed up the healing process in wounds. By reducing inflammation and reducing the proliferation of the wound it is able to get to the healing phase quickly and also manages to reduce the formation of scar tissue.

Acupuncture

The use of needles in acupuncture could scare some people away form using the therapy despite its track record, but low light laser therapy is touted to have similar effects without the needles, according to the American Cancer Society.
The use of lasers to stimulate the body's "acupoints" replaces the need for the actual needle and the benefits of this laser acupuncture are the same. Laser therapy providers advertise this treatment as a way to quit smoking, although there is no scientific evidence to support it.

The Effects of Yoga on the Skeletal System

Yoga is one of the world's oldest and most widely practiced forms of exercise. Both practitioners and medical experts have found that yoga provides an effective and holistic approach for keeping bones healthy and strong into old age.

History

The system of yoga, which means to yoke or unite, was developed by ancient Indian, Chinese, Tibetan and Mayan civilizations. Yoga, which dates back to 40,000 BC, has been credited for renewing bone health, as well as creating mental and spiritual well-being.

Benefits

A consistent yoga practice improves posture and tones muscles, which reduces the weight and pressure on joints. Yoga also increases flexibility and relieves tension in the spine, hips and pelvis. It also maintains bone density and protects the body against common conditions such as osteoporosis.

Weight-Bearing Poses

Weight-bearing standing, inversion and arm-balancing poses, such as plow, plank and downward-facing dog, help increase bone mass and prevent fractures.

Expert Insight

According to Mary Schatz, M.D., a noted pathologist and yoga instructor, inversion and standing poses stimulate the bones, allowing them to absorb calcium.

Considerations

Depending on their condition, individuals who are pregnant, suffer from osteoporotic fractures, have neck or spinal injuries, high blood pressure or heart problems should avoid practicing certain twisting, bending and standing poses.
