How to Fix a Pinched Nerve

Pinched nerves are caused by bone, cartilage, tendon or muscle compression. The following is a technique for relieving pain due to muscle compression. Since both bone and muscle compression may occur simultaneously, the muscle work can help take the edge off any pain caused by bone compression. Before using this technique, see your doctor to get a diagnosis.

Instructions

How to Fix a Pinched Nerve

    1

Pinpoint your pain by moving the affected area of the body. What movements cause pain? How far can you move before it hurts too much? How much weight can you put on the problem area before the pain stops you? Feel around and find the sorest spot.

    2

Apply heat to this area for 15 to 20 minutes. Be careful not to burn yourself---put a T-shirt or cotton or flannel fabric between the heat source and your skin. Remove the heat and stretch the area to see if you have a better range of motion or less pain.

    3

Apply a generous amount of liniment to the sore area. Let it soak into the muscle and reapply. Stretch the sore area again to see if your range of motion has improved.

    4

Take the tennis ball or use your finger to apply pressure to the sore area. Then, after a few minutes, take the tennis ball and put it between your body and a wall or the floor and use your body weight to apply deeper pressure. Do this for 15 minutes, going deeper over time. Do not try to go too deep too quickly or you may bruise yourself.

    5

Check your range of motion and gauge your level of pain. Apply more liniment if you like, but do not apply more heat until the liniment wears off (in a few hours).

How to Ease Tooth & Gum Pain

Tooth and gum pain can become quite a hassle. Pain in your gums or teeth can at times mean problems such as gum disease or cavities. Before going to the dentist, there are a few home remedies you can try without spending too much time or money. Most of these solutions can be fast and effective, and sometimes you might already have them at home.

Instructions

Easing the Pain

    1

Place a cold pack against the outside of your jaw. This will help keep down swelling as well as quickly numb the pain. To use a more direct approach, use an ice cube and place it on your aching teeth.

    2

Smash up 2 tbsp. of whole cloves and mix with 1 tbsp. of olive oil. Place the paste on your painful tooth and gums. The paste should help eliminate the pain almost immediately, but it is only a temporary solution.

    3

Massage your earlobe or hand (between the thumb and forefinger) gently. If your toothache is on the right side, take two fingers and rub the earlobe (or hand) on your right side and vice versa.

How to Treat Psoriasis Naturally

How to Treat Psoriasis Naturally

Just because you have been diagnosed with psoriasis does not mean you will need to rely on pharmaceuticals. You can treat psoriasis naturally with many simple lifestyle changes. Read on to learn how to get a natural treatment for this condition.

Instructions

    1

Apply a zinc cream daily to affected areas. Try natural diaper ointment. Read the label before purchasing. You'll discover that wholesome brands list zinc oxide as the first and sometimes only ingredient.

    2

Take zinc supplements orally to treat psoriasis naturally. Zinc deficiency triggers psoriasis in many individuals.

    3

Get your vitamin D levels tested because low levels of this vital hormone can trigger psoriasis. Take vitamin D supplements if levels are low. Check with your physician to determine proper dosage.

    4

Avoid prolonged exposure to hot water during bath time. Hot water can aggravate many skin conditions. This is especially important during the winter months.

    5

Expose face, arms, and legs to direct sunlight at least twenty minutes daily. This helps with vitamin D production.

    6

Switch to allergy-free laundry detergent since certain chemicals and fragrances can aggravate skin. Baby laundry detergent is a good choice.

    7

Take evening primrose oil supplements by mouth or break open a capsule and rub the liquid on psoriasis areas. Double check with your doctor first since evening primrose oil is not suitable for individuals taking certain medications.

    8

Visit a naturopathic doctor who will evaluate your condition holistically and work in conjunction with your family physician to pursue treatment possibilities and causes that conventional medicine often ignores.

Grapefruit Seed Extract Uses

Grapefruit Seed Extract Uses

Grapefruit seed extract (known as GSE) is frequently used by practitioners of alternative medicine and nutritionists, because of its healing properties. The grapefruit's pulp and seeds are altered into a highly acidic liquid, to create the extract, which contains polyphenolic compounds. The International Journal of Molecular Sciences notes that polyphenolic compounds are considered to have antioxidative, anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic properties; which is why grapefruit seed extract serves a number of uses.

Features

Grapefruit seed extract is often used for detoxification, as it helps the body fight off infections caused by bacteria, fungi and parasites. The phenols in grape fruit seed extract also work to maintain and advance the function of the immune system, according to Bio-Medicine.org.

Benefits

Grapefruit seed extract is full of bioflavonoids and C and E vitamins, which are used to reduce the effect of the dangerous free radicals and enhance our metabolic functioning. According to the the George Mateljan Foundation for the World's Healthiest Foods, "Vitamin C-rich foods like grapefruit may help reduce cold symptoms or severity of cold symptoms; over 20 scientific studies have suggested that vitamin C is a cold-fighter."

Effects

Grapefruit seed extract is also used to help alkalize the body (raise the pH level); a key component health restoration that can prevent associated degenerative diseases, according to Vanderbilt University's Health Psychology department.

Treatment

Due to its therapeutic makeup, grapefruit seed extract can also be used to combat conditions such as candida Infections, chronic fatigue syndrome, colds, digestive disturbances, ear inflammation, gastrointestinal disorders, halitosis, infections, sinusitis and to prevent germs from forming a resistance against external disturbances and infections of the skin like acne, athlete's foot, chicken pox, cold sores, dandruff, head lice, herpes, poison ivy, poison oak, rashes, ringworm and warts, according to Nutriteam.com.

Potential

Grapefruit seed extract also serves a variety of purposes for the household (as a cleanser, laundry cleaner) and garden (eliminating fungus, mold and bugs).

How to Naturally Treat Hookworm

There are two types of hookworms. One affects household animals like dogs and cats. The other affects humans. Hookworms first enter the body through the skin, usually on the foot. Hookworms eventually find their way into the intestines, where they feed off the blood of their hosts in order to get iron. This can cause infections in both humans and animals. Luckily, they can be treated naturally.

Instructions

    1

Make sure that you or your pet is infected with hookworms before you begin to treat them. Some of the symptoms of hookworms include a slight fever, pain in the stomach area, and coughing or wheezing caused by hookworm larvae. The doctor is the best person to make a positive diagnosis of hookworm infection.

    2

Give some food grade diatomaceous earth to you pets if they have hookworms. This goes right into the digestive system and kills the hookworms. It also doesn't get digested, so it will not harm your pet. Give 1 to 2 tbsp. to dogs, 1/2 tbsp. to puppies and kittens, and 1 tbsp. to cats.

    3

Add more garlic to your meals. The more garlic the better, as you want to get as much allicin into your body. Allicin comes from garlic and is known to treat many type of worm infections, including hookworms.

    4

If your case of hookworm is very bad, consider consuming some diatomaceous earth, as well. About 1 to 2 tbsp. will do.

About Colloidal Silver Water

Colloidal silver water has been in use even longer than conventional antibiotics for killing a variety of microorganisms. Now colloidal silver solution and related products are becoming popular for a wide array of health conditions and other purposes. What is colloidal silver, and how do the different types of solutions available differ?

Definition

Colloidal silver water is a suspension of small (in the nanometer range) metallic silver particles in water. It differs from an ionic solution of silver, in which the silver particles are dissolved rather than suspended, but many people use the term to refer to both. The smallest particles have the highest surface area and thus the most activity. The strength of a colloidal silver solution is measured in mg/l or parts per million (ppm): a 10 percent solution is 100,000 ppm. Typical solutions used as a natural antibiotic and disinfectant are in the range of 5 to 30 ppm, or occasionally as high as 250 to 500 ppm.

Production

Small amounts of silver are found in foods such as mushrooms and wheat flour, but silver is generally not ingested via food. Silver solution is produced using an electrolysis process. Both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) processes can be used, with some experts considering AC the superior option. This process typically produces ionic silver and silver nanoparticles.

History

Colloidal silver has been used for over a century for its ability to kill bacteria, fungi and viruses. A 1914 study by Simpson & Hewlett showed that it could kill typhoid at only 5 ppm, and a 1918 study by Culver showed it to be effective against gonorrhea. In the 1960s it was commonly used for burn victims, especially against a form of pseudomonas bacteria. With the advent of antibiotics in the 1940s, use of colloidal silver and research into its benefits dropped off.

Uses

Various brands of colloidal silver water are available in health stores; some people even buy equipment for creating their own solutions at home. The solution is used topically for nail fungus, ringworm, burn wounds and other skin infections and injuries. It is taken internally to fight off systemic infections including candida and E. coli. Some people also use it as an eye wash, as a gargle and as a home surface sterilizer. Pet owners seeking natural alternatives to antibiotics and other prescription medications are also beginning to discover the benefits of colloidal silver.

Considerations

Some individuals, who have ingested higher doses of silver solution for an extended period, have experienced a condition called argyria, where silver is deposited in the skin. The skin then turns gray upon exposure to sunlight. This is generally a response to ingestion of silver protein solution rather than true colloidal silver. In fact, many of the products on sale have been tested and found to be primarily silver protein (which uses gelatin or protein and larger silver particles) or ionic silver rather than colloidal silver. Many companies sell colloidal silver generators, but Prof. Ronald Gibbs, director of the University of Delaware's Center for Colloidal Science for almost 20 years, warns these generators actually make ionic silver. Other scientists have also expressed concerns about the effectiveness of using a home process for making colloidal silver, especially due to the lack of consistency and standard strength for such solutions.

How to Cure a Sore Throat Without the Use of Medicine

Mild throat pain can usually be treated at home without the assistance of a doctor or medical professional. Sore throat pain can be uncomfortable and miserable, especially for young children. Several over-the-counter medications are formulated to soothe sore throat pain, but many of these products may contain harmful ingredients. Alternative methods can be used to help cure a sore throat. Natural remedies tend to work as well as medication when it comes to eliminating the itchy, burning feeling of a sore throat.

Instructions

    1

To rest your throat, don't talk unless absolutely necessary, and get lots of rest so that your body can fight off the sickness.

    2

Use apple cider vinegar. Fill a 6 to 8 ounce cup with water and add 1 to 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar (make the vinegar as strong as you can stand it). Gargle the water/vinegar mixture twice and swallow each time. The acidic properties in the apple cider vinegar will naturally kill the bacteria that is causing your sore throat pain. Make sure you rinse your mouth well with water afterward in order to rinse out the excess vinegar, because it may harm your teeth.

    3

Try chamomile tea. Combine a cup of hot water and 1 to 2 teaspoons of chamomile blossoms. Sip the tea slowly, drinking one cup every couple of hours. The chamomile will soothe your throat.

    4

Create a mixture of honey and apple cider vinegar. Mix 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey. Take a teaspoon of the honey/vinegar combination every four hours for 1 to 2 days or until the sore throat pain subsides.

    5

Gargle the juice of a lemon mixed with 1 teaspoon of salt and 1 cup of water. This sour concoction should be gargled three to four times a day and it will fight the itchy, aching feeling in your throat.

    6

Pomegranate is one more natural ingredient that works to fight off sore throat pain. The pomegranate contains astringents that fight bacterial infections. Boil pomegranate rinds to turn them into a tasty tea that will assist in curing a sore throat.

    7

If the aforementioned remedies do not cure your sore throat, it is important to seek the help of a professional doctor for further treatment.

Home Treatments for Cellulitis

Cellulitis is a bacterial skin infection. It causes a rash and leaves skin red, tender and swollen. It is important to seek treatment quickly because this infection has the potential to enter the bloodstream and spread throughout the body. This condition is caused by bacteria entering a crack or break in the skin. The two most common kinds of bacteria are streptococcus and staphylococcus. Natural treatments for cellulitis should be used in conjunction with the standard treatment of antibiotics and never on their own. Be sure to tell your doctor about any natural supplements you are using.

Important Considerations for Treatment

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, there have not been a lot of studies that have specifically examined natural treatments for cellulitis. However, the medical center does have a list of recommendations that may be helpful based on the supplements' general healing properties that address certain characteristics of this condition. Again, do not rely on natural treatments alone for this condition. This infection can turn serious very quickly and standard antibiotics are very important.

Herbal Treatments

Bromelain is well known for its ability to reduce swelling and inflammation. Take 250 milligrams two or three times a day. Echinacea is good for strengthening the immune system. Take 500 to 1,000 milligrams three times a day. Echinacea can also be used topically to treat inflamed skin, as is the case with cellulitis. Use as directed on the product label. Pycnogenol and gotu kola keep skin healthy. Take 200 milligrams of pycnogenol daily and 60 milligrams of Gotu Kola twice a day. Avoid gotu kola if you suffer from anxiety or hypertension (high blood pressure).

The following treatments can be applied topically to accelerate healing of the skin.
Goldenseal root is anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial. Slippery elm has antiseptic properties. Mix these powders with a small amount of water to make a paste and apply to the infected area two times a day. Calendula is well known for its skin-soothing properties. There are many creams available. You can also make a tea by adding one or two teaspoons of dried calendula flowers to a cup of boiling water. Let steep for about 10 minutes, let it cool off, soak a cloth in it, and apply to the skin. Tea tree oil and pure honey are also highly antibacterial.

How to Use Garlic to Treat Internal Parasites

How to Use Garlic to Treat Internal Parasites

While internal parasites are not especially common among people in the United States, they are common in animals. Both domestic herd animals, such as cows and sheep, and household pets are commonly afflicted with internal parasites. Tapeworms, hookworms and roundworms are all parasites that can upset the animals in your life.

Instructions

    1

Feed garlic to your dog in order to treat internal parasites. Rather than creating a toxic environment that kills the parasites, garlic cleans out your dog's system so that it is no longer a suitable environment for worms. Garlic cleans out the dog's intestines, reducing the mucus and waste on which the worms feed.

    2

Feed larger amounts of garlic to larger breeds when you suspect internal parasites. Include 2 to 3 cloves in your animal's meal for breeds weighing over 35 lbs.

    3

Use a slightly smaller amount for a medium-size breed. For an animal weighing between 15 to 35 pounds, a single garlic clove with meals should be sufficient.

    4

Feed small dogs and cats, those weighing 15 pounds or less, half a clove at each meal.

    5

Use garlic as a preventative treatment for large livestock. Mince 3 garlic cloves and combine them with 5 wormwood leaves, some sunflower seeds and some onion. If you feed this to your livestock weekly, it is a good preventative measure against internal parasites.

    6

Use garlic to treat not only internal parasites, but external annoyances as well. Garlic is a powerful mosquito deterrent and also works against fleas.

How to Use Apple Cider Vinegar to Reduce Dandruff

How to Use Apple Cider Vinegar to Reduce Dandruff

If you find yourself with a case of dandruff but don't want to treat it with harsh chemicals or dandruff shampoos, a bottle of apple cider vinegar may be able to cure your dandruff. It regulates the pH balance of your skin while adding shine to your hair.

Instructions

    1

Wash your hair with a mild, pH-balanced shampoo. You don't need to use a dandruff shampoo because the apple cider vinegar naturally restores your scalp's pH and gradually does away with your dandruff problem.

    2

Mix together two parts apple cider vinegar and one part warm water. Add a few drops of scalp-friendly essential oils like lavender, lemongrass or rosemary for additional dandruff treatment, and to make your hair more fragrant than vinegar.

    3

Pour the mixture directly over clean hair or put it in a spritz bottle and spray it on your scalp. Massage lightly and let the cider mixture dry on your hair. You don't have to rinse it out, but you can if the smell bothers you.

    4

Treat stubborn dandruff with a stronger mixture, such as a one to one ratio of cider to water, or with straight apple cider vinegar. Apply it to your hair and let the vinegar penetrate your scalp for 15 minutes. Wash the cider out with a mild, pH-balanced shampoo.

    5

Repeat the apple cider vinegar treatment at least once a week for best results.

Nightshade Diet & Arthritis

Nightshade Diet & Arthritis

Arthritis is a painful and sometimes debilitating group of autoimmune diseases including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. Major symptoms are inflammation of the joints, pain, and stiffness. One theory of treatment is that eliminating foods from the nightshade family from the diet provides relief.

Nightshades

The nightshades group of plants includes about 1,500 species. Most parts of the nightshade plant are inedible or poisonous such as the fruit, leaves, or roots. However, several species are cultivated worldwide for human consumption. Nightshades have been used in folk medicine for centuries to treat all manner of illness.

Tomatoes, eggplant, peppers (red, yellow, green) and potatoes are all members of the nightshade family. Paprika, the rusty red spice used frequently in spice blends, is also a nightshade. It is believed that nightshade plants aggravate the inflammation that causes pain, swelling, and stiffness in the joints of arthritis sufferers.

Alternative Medicine

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the nightshade diet for arthritis is considered complementary or alternative medicine (CAM). That means it has not been scientifically proven to be effective, even though there may be many anecdotal stories of success. While the nightshade diet is not believed to be harmful in any way, it has not been studied in-depth.

There are several ways of treating arthritis with conventional or modern medicine. People who have had little success with these methods may with to add to, or complement, their current regimen. They may feel CAM treatments are more natural or healthy for them.

Diet

You should be diagnosed by a properly trained medical physician and work with him or her on a treatment plan that works for you. Discuss your desire to participate in a nightshade-free diet and keep track of your symptoms to determine if this is a helpful measure for you. Be careful when eliminating foods from your diet--you may not get enough important minerals or vitamins if you do this. Again, speak with your doctor about a healthful eating plan.

How to Use Flaxseed Oil to Treat Anxiety

How to Use Flaxseed Oil to Treat Anxiety

Anxiety can manifest itself in many forms. We can experience muscle tightness, stomach problems, headaches and a host of other physical symptoms when we are anxious. Flaxseed oil contains alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), one of the omega-3 acids that is essential to maintaining good health. Flaxseed oil may help lower our blood pressure and cholesterol, keep our digestive tracts healthy and act as an anti-inflammatory. It can also balance our hormones enough to treat PMS symptoms and general anxiety.

Instructions

    1

Speak to your doctor if you experience depression or anxiety that stems from an inflammatory disease or condition, such as arthritis or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Flaxseed oil can be taken internally or used as a poultice to reduce inflammation. You may feel less anxious if you are having less pain.

    2

Start off slowly when you use flaxseed products to treat anxiety. If your body is not accustomed to the supplement, you could experience uncomfortable side effects such as excessive fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, itching, nasal congestion and sneezing. Take a dose of flaxseed oil and see how your body reacts before adding it to your regular routine.

    3

Take flaxseed oil by mixing it with a beverage or by swallowing capsules. You can get a day's worth of nutrients with 1 tbsp. of oil. You will need to take as many as 10 to 20 capsules daily for the same amount of benefit.

    4

Incorporate ground flaxseed into baked goods if you want to mask the taste of the supplement. This will also add fiber to your diet, improving your overall health.

    5

Treat joint pain that may be leading to fatigue and anxiety with a flaxseed compress. Mix flaxseed flour, available at most health food stores, with hot water until it has formed a loose paste. Use a washcloth to apply it topically where needed.

    6

Experiment by adding flax products to foods you normally eat. Oatmeal, yogurt, salads and fruit are good choices. The nutty taste of the oil or seeds can complement many different flavors.

Sea Kelp Uses

Sea Kelp Uses

Sea kelp, also known as bladderwrack, seaweed, algae or wakame, is used for both medicinal and culinary purposes. While some people may have an allergy to sea kelp because of its high iodine content, others benefit greatly from it's rich nutrient content. It is a good source of vitamin B-12, iodine, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and iron.

Culinary uses

Sea kelp is safe for consumption for those who are not allergic to it. In fact, sea kelp has been a dietary staple in Asian countries for centuries. It is a common ingredient in popular Asian cuisine like sushi. According to the American Cancer Society, an extract of sea kelp called carrageenan gum is used to thicken foods, create gels and stabilize food mixtures. It is present in products like infant formula and ice cream.

Thyroid Disorder Treatment

Sea kelp is also used to treat disorders of the thyroid. In particular, if thyroid problems are caused by an iodine deficiency, sea kelp may be suitable as an alternative treatment. This is because iodine helps the thyroid produce the hormone necessary for the body's metabolic processes. However, it can also be potentially harmful so it should be used under the guidance of a health care professional.

Inflammation Treatment

Kelp may also be used to ease inflammation associated with arthritis and rheumatism. Topical applications of kelp products can be applied to help ease inflammation. According to Dr. C. Norman Shealy, a compress of sea kelp can be used twice daily to both nourish and sooth aching joints. He also states it may delay the progression of arthritis in some individuals.

Constipation

Kelp can also help alleviate constipation as it contains the natural laxative algin. Consuming kelp plant products or taking it in supplement form may help move the bowels without resorting to harsher chemical laxatives.

Kelp & Estrogen Levels

Kelp & Estrogen Levels

Kelp grows primarily in the North Atlantic Ocean and in the Norwegian Sea. It is sold in capsule and powdered form at health food stores. A new study led by researchers at the University of California at Berkeley has found evidence that kelp may help decrease the risk of estrogen-dependent diseases.

History

The Eskimos, South Sea Islanders, Japanese and Chinese have long used kelp as a staple. It contains many chemicals and minerals that are prevalent in the oceans, but may be absent in some soils that produce vegetables. It contains every vital mineral needed for sustaining body health.

Identification

Kelp comes in many shapes and sizes. This common seaweed can grow as much as 2 feet a day and is in demand for its medicinal uses.

Health Benefits

Iodine is a mineral that is essential for maintaining thyroid health and can be found in kelp. Iodine is also used to maintain metabolic efficiency and to help fight bacterial infections. Other minerals found in kelp are calcium, vitamins A, B-complex, E, K and D. A diet containing kelp has been shown to decrease the risk of estrogen-dependent breast cancer in humans.

Effects

Kelp is believed to lower high estrogen levels when added to the diet. A factor that may contribute to the lowered levels is that kelp acts as an estrogen antagonist by preventing estrogen from binding with its receptors.

Warning

Women are cautioned to be careful about excessive kelp intake. High levels of iodine and low levels of heavy metals in kelp may not be appropriate for pregnant or nursing women or those with hyperthyroid conditions. The recommended amount depends on your age and lifestyle. The amount needed is very small compared to other nutrients and is measured in micrograms.

How to Get Treatment for Gallstones

How to Get Treatment for Gallstones

The gallbladder stores excess bile produced by the liver. It's a small pear-shaped sack and hangs between the liver's lobes. Cholesterol combined with bile produces gallstones. Gallstones can cause severe right upper stomach pain and can even simulate a heart attack. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

    1

Get treatment for gallstones naturally. Whereas conventional medicine doctors usually recommend having the gallbladder removed, there are alternative medicine treatments that can flush out the gallbladder, removing the gallstones.

    2

Do a gallbladder flush, following a seven day plan. From Monday to Saturday, drink all the apple juice you possibly can. (You can still eat and drink as you normally do). Three hours after your usual lunch on Saturday, dissolve 2 tsp. of Epsom salts into a small glass of hot water and drink. Brace yourself; it tastes bad. Then, drink a glass of grapefruit juice. Repeat this process 2 hours later.

    3

Continue to get your treatment for gallstones by continuing the gallbladder flush at your evening meal on Saturday. Instead of what you'd usually eat for supper, eat half of a grapefruit and drink another glass of grapefruit juice.

    4

Mix cup of warm, unrefined olive oil and cup of grapefruit juice at bedtime on Saturday. Drink this mixture. Then, mix cup of unrefined olive oil and cup of fresh-squeezed lemon juice. Drink this and then go to bed.

    5

Lie in bed on your right side with your right knee pulled up as close to your chest as possible. Maintain that position for 30 minutes; then you can sleep in your usual position.

    6

Get up Sunday morning and drink 2 tsp. of Epsom salts in a small glass of hot water an hour before you eat your usual breakfast. This completes your gallbladder flush and treatment for gallstones. You might see small green stones shaped irregularly in your bowel movement that day. These cholesterol stones may be the size of kiwi fruit or a little smaller than cherries. Some may resemble grape seeds.

A healthy diet can actually help you maintain the frequency of cold sores. Studies show that people with cold sores are low in Vitamin B12. When they add this vitamin to their diet, many people see improvement immediately in their condition.

Arginine

Foods high in arginine have been shown to aid in the growth of the herpes virus, while lysine works to inhibit the virus.
Avoid foods high in arginine, such as chocolate, nuts, grains, seeds and oatmeal.

Foods to Eat

Eating plain yogurt is good for preventing cold sores. Yogurt has been shown to stimulate the immune system, and people who add yogurt to their daily diet were said to have gotten fewer, if any, cold sores.

Foods that will prevent cold sores are: beef, fish, chicken, cheese, milk, eggs and fruits. Make these foods a part of your daily diet in order to keep control of cold sore outbreaks.

Home Remedies

To dry out the cold sores, try steeping a tea bag in boiling water for a few minutes. Allow it to cool and then apply it to the sores. After a few days the cold sores will crust over and disappear.
Applying mint extract to the sore will speed the healing process.

If you are still having trouble with your cold sore or if it gets worse, consult your doctor to get the help and medication you need.

Vinegar Health Diet

Vinegar Health Diet

Vinegar is certainly not a new invention. As early as 5000 BCE, the ancient Babylonians believed vinegar had medical benefits. Hippocrates used vinegar as an antiseptic for centuries before the idea of germs was understood. The idea of a vinegar health diet and how it may be used as a weight loss aid has been popular for decades.

Types of Vinegar

When discussing the health claims made for vinegar, the vinegar in question is usually apple cider vinegar. Enthusiasts will also specify that the best choice is unfiltered apple cider vinegar. Available in grocery stores and health food stores, unfiltered vinegar has a cloudy appearance. The cloudy appearance is what is called "mother," a stringy substance that looks a bit like floating cobwebs. Mother is a cellulose made up of Acetobacter. Mother is also what turns alcohol, like wine, into vinegar. Most supermarket vinegar is filtered and pasteurized, removing the mother and making the vinegar more visually appealing.

Benefits of Vinegar

The scientific evidence is still mixed, but there is reason to believe that at least some of the health claims made about vinegar are valid. In 2006, a study in rats seemed to indicate that vinegar decreases cholesterol and other studies show that vinegar helps lower blood pressure. Another study looked at people who ate salads with oil and vinegar dressing five times a week. The research found that these people had lower rates of heart disease, as of yet, there is no proof that the vinegar was the cause.

One of the best-researched areas is the effects of vinegar on blood glucose levels. The studies seem to show that vinegar might lower the levels, which could be useful to diabetics. A study done in 2007 was small, but promising. Doctors looked at 11 people with type 2 diabetes and found they could lower blood glucose levels by 4 to 6 percent when taking two tablespoons of vinegar before going to bed.

One of the most popular reasons for eating vinegar is for weight loss. Although it wasn't new, the vinegar diet gained popularity in the 1950s, when Dr. D. C. Jarvis published "Vermont Doctor's Guide to Good Health." Apple cider vinegar is thought to boost the body's ability to burn fat and to decrease appetite and cravings.

How to use vinegar

Vinegar is an unproven treatment, and so there are no official recommendations for its use. Dr. Jarvis recommended "two teaspoons full of honey and two teaspoons full of apple cider vinegar taken in a glass of water one or more times a day." For dieters, the traditional dosage is two to three teaspoons of vinegar in a glass of water three times a day, about 30 minutes before a meal. A fourth dose approximately two hours after dinner is optional to help curb evening snacking.

Cautions

Before beginning the vinegar health diet it is advisable to consult with your doctor. Long-term vinegar use can lower bone density and potassium levels, so people with osteoporosis or low potassium levels should absolutely consult their doctor before beginning the vinegar diet. Diabetics should also check with their doctor, since vinegar not only affects blood glucose levels, but it contains chromium, which can affect insulin levels.

Since apple cider vinegar is extremely acidic, dilute it with water or juice before swallowing. The acetic acid in vinegar could damage tooth enamel and can be irritating to the mouth and throat.

Natural Cures for Lung Health

Natural Cures for Lung Health

Lung problems are some of the most debilitating and intractable health issues that a person can be saddled with. In most cases, chronic lung problems are caused by smoking, second hand smoke or environmental pollutants like mold or emissions. Natural remedies for lung ailments include vitamins, increased exercise, improved nutrition and alternative respiratory treatments.

Warning

Beware of marketed cures of herbal supplements and vitamins that are not backed by scientific studies. Although it is illegal to market cures without having some sort of proof for the claims, many supplements marketers ignore such advice and produce vast amounts of promising marketing material designed to rope in the unwary consumer. Alternative medicine is often a better choice than turning to the medical establishment, but that doesn't mean accepting any marketing claim as the plain truth without any proof backing up claims.

Function

Breath exercise machines are good natural alternatives to drug treatments and surgeries that cost very little. These simple plastic devices add resistance to breathing and push their user to become more mindful of their breath. They apply air pressure to make it more difficult to breathe, exercising the lungs. Using such a device multiple times daily can have a marked effect on lung health.

Features

Improving cardiovascular health is the best way to improve lung strength and effectiveness without expensive and dangerous medical treatments. Regular strenuous exercise at least three times a week trains the heart and lungs to become stronger, making them oxygenate the blood more efficiently. This helps the body get the most out of lungs that may have been weakened over time.

Time Frame

Repairing the lungs is a process that can take months and years. Don't expect instantaneous results with any alternative treatments. Herbal supplement marketing that suggests that it can solve intractable lung problems rapidly are almost certainly using deceptive marketing. Be wary of words like "cleansing" and "detoxification" when used in regards to supplements. No treatment can destroy accumulated tar or repair lung scarring. Successful lung healing requires committed effort applied over a period of years.

Nutrition

Increasing vitamin A and D intake can improve lung function, whether it's taken in through supplements or improved nutrition. When beginning a vitamin program, be sure to stick with it over the long run. Only taking vitamins for a short time may result in an improved feeling of well-being, but the effects on lung health will not take hold without repeated intake of a healthy, vitamin-rich diet. Regular exposure to sunlight is necessary for the body to synthesize vitamin D. Work some regular time outdoors into your schedule to make sure that your body produces the vitamins that it needs to strengthen its lungs.

How to Treat Urinary Tract Infections With Natural Remedies

How to Treat Urinary Tract Infections With Natural Remedies

Urinary tract infections are most common in women; however, men can get them as well. A urinary tract infection causes painful urination, abdominal pain, fever, foul-smelling urine and even blood in the urine. If not treated, it can lead to kidney failure. There are many causes of urinary tract infection, with the most common being exposure to staphylococcus or streptococcus bacteria. Other factors include poor diet and exposure to E.coli. Allergies to spermicide and contraceptives can also cause urinary tract infections in womenAntibiotics are often prescribed to treat the infection; however, overusing antibiotics often has a reverse effect. Natural and herbal remedies have been known to treat and prevent urinary tract infections. A 30-day diet of natural foods and herbs is recommended.

Instructions

Diet and Supplements

    1

Remove acidic foods from your diet if you have a urinary tract infection. Foods such as chicken, peanuts, fish, organ meats and bread will cause an excessive amount of uric acid to form in the blood, making your infection difficult to treat. Replace these foods with non-acidic items like almonds, carrots, celery, apples, peaches, lettuce, oatmeal and grapes.

    2

Drink a 12-oz. glass of pure cranberry juice 1 hour before breakfast. To properly treat your urinary tract infection, it is important that you cleanse your bladder and kidneys. Cranberry juice is helpful in ridding the bladder and kidneys of harmful bacteria that cause urinary tract infections. See our article "How to Cleanse Your Bladder and Kidneys" (follow the link in Resources).

    3

Drink a 10-oz. glass of tomato juice between breakfast and lunch. Tomato juice is a powerful alkalizing supplement that will help balance your pH level. Tomatoes are often thought of as highly acidic; however, they begin to neutralize your pH level soon after they are digested.

    4

Drink 1 cup of watermelon-seed tea with lunch and dinner. Watermelon-seed tea is a mild but effective diuretic that promotes normal and active bladder and kidney function. This is will help you digest your food and flush your system of toxins.

    5

Drink 1 cup of bladder/kidney cleansing tea 1 hour before bedtime. There are many brands of cleansing teas on the market. Renal Cleansing Tea is a powerful tea that is sold in most health-food stores. Cleansing tea is rich in Juniper berries, corn silk, peppermint leaves and dandelion leaves, which will help you flush your system and digest your food as you sleep.

Exercise and Body Care

    6

Take a brisk walk each day. Walking will help get your kidneys working. While you walk, keep yourself hydrated with spring water. Let yourself sweat, but don't deprive yourself of fluid.

    7

Sit in a sauna for 30 minutes at least once during your cleanse. Saunas are wonderful ways to release toxins and unwanted fluids through perspiration. If you don't have access to a sauna, a hot sitz bath followed by a cold shower will help you. Avoid over-the-counter soaps with large amounts of oil. Clean your pores thoroughly.

    8

Stretch before you start your day and before going to bed each night. Proper stretching will help you get moving in the morning and relax you before you go to bed.

Home Remedy for Tightly Distended Belly

Home Remedy for Tightly Distended Belly

A tightly distended belly can cause quite a bit of pain. This problem is usually a symptom of a condition due to gas in the intestine, according to Hows Health. A variety of causes such as lactose intolerance, excessive eating or constipation can cause a tightly distended belly. If you are suffering from this condition, there are a few home remedies you can try to relieve the feeling before you need a doctor's intervention.

Instructions

    1

Eat smaller, more frequent meals. Eating smaller portions and spreading your intake throughout the day can help prevent the bloating that sometimes occurs if you eat too much in one sitting. Try using straws to drink liquids, which will reduce the amount of air you swallow.

    2

Try probiotics. Probiotics, taken in pill form or eaten in yogurt that contains live bacteria, can be extremely helpful in preventing a tightly distended belly and bloating. Probiotics are considered to be "good bacteria" and support general wellness, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

    3

Take a homeopathic remedy. Homeopathy Home suggests carbo vegetabilis for those who have a distended abdomen with colicky pain and belching. A homeopathic doctor can suggest the correct dose for you.

Body Wrap Weight Loss

Body Wrap Weight Loss

Body wraps induce inch loss by reducing excess water weight and releasing toxins from the body. Basically, they make you sweat. Some body wraps are designed to rid the body of toxins. Others are designed for weight loss.

Background

In use for centuries, body wraps are typically performed in high-end salons or spas; however, they can also be used at home. In the past few decades, modern health centers and clinics have added body wraps and body treatments to their services for clients. These include body wraps for inch loss and detoxification, as well as a relaxation aid.

Body wraps can help you lose weight, achieve inch loss, detoxify the skin of impurities and tone the skin. They also aid in the reduction of cellulite and give skin a more toned appearance. Some people use body wraps to relieve pain from injury or illness. Infrared heat body wraps burn calories, and are believed to offer some relief from joint and muscle pain.

Types of Body Wraps

There are generally two main types of body wraps. One is mainly for detoxification, and is usually an herbal body wrap. With this body wrap, the goal is to rid the body of toxins and impurities. The other body wrap is mainly for weight loss. With this wrap, the goal is to achieve rapid inch loss so you will look and feel slimmer. Still other body wraps focus on a combination of the two. Most call for an herbal and mineral mixture to be applied prior to the body wrap.

The types of body wrap solutions include herbal combinations, detoxifying clays and minerals, seaweed, collagen, lipase and aloe vera. Newer versions even incorporate infrared heat. Some brand names of infrared body wraps are Thermojet Morfologic, Sudatonic and Formostar. In most body wraps, you will be covered with the chosen solution and then wrapped from head to toe. However, you may opt for a targeted body wrap for specific areas such as waist or thighs.

Two of the most well-known spas/salons that offer professional esthetician body wraps are Suddenly Slender and Merle Norman.

Additionally, many independent salons and spas offer body wraps and body treatments. Body wraps in a spa or salon typically run from $80 to $150. The advantage of having a trained esthetician performing the body wrap is that this individual should be certified and has completed a training program. Home body wrap kits are available from various suppliers on the Internet or in retail stores at a reduced price from the salon rate.

Potential & Precautions

Proponents of body wraps say that they can help tone skin, decrease the appearance of cellulite, increase metabolism, detox the body, burn calories and promote inch and weight loss.

The potential to assist in detox from drugs, nicotine and other chemicals from cigarette usage is largely unexplored. Psychological potential might be to increase self esteem, promote relaxation and build confidence. Additionally, others claim the infrared body wrap treatments ease joint and muscle pain, while reducing up to 1,400 calories per session.

As with any body treatment, there may be some side effects from adverse reactions. Consult your healthcare provider before use if you are currently taking medications or suffering from an illness.

Homemade Alpha Lipoic Cream for the Perricone Diet

Homemade Alpha Lipoic Cream for the Perricone Diet

The Perricone diet was invented by Dr. Nicolas Perricone, who wrote a book on the subject titled "The Perricone Promise." In the book Dr. Perricone discusses various products he tested that have been proven to have anti-aging benefits. One of the products is alpha lipoic cream, used to minimize the appearance of wrinkles. The topical cosmetics that Dr. Perricone discusses may work, but they are incredibly expensive. If you want to benefit from alpha lipoic cream but do not want to spend a lot of money, you may want to learn how to make it yourself.

Alpha Lipoic

Alpha lipoic acid is a naturally occurring fatty acid that can be found in every cell of the body. An antioxidant, it is used in daily bodily functions and helps the body to convert glucose into energy. Dr. Perricone recommends topical cosmetics such as alpha lipoic because he claims they help boost the bodys levels of peptides and neuropeptides, which help improve the skins collagen production.

Making Alpha Lipoic Cream

There are many advantages to making your own skin cream products, such as saving money, using fresh ingredients, getting the desired strength, and convenience. You may think that making your own skin cream is a daunting or difficult task, but it is actually quite simple. Skin cream is just a variety of different ingredients that have been mixed together. All you need to do is figure out what ingredients you need and then purchase them at a health store or even at a dollar store. When getting the right ingredients for your homemade alpha lipoic cream, you should first purchase a base cream that already contains inactive ingredients. A base cream can be purchased at any low cost store for a very reasonable price. Then add about 100 mg of alpha lipoic acids to the base cream, which can be purchased in capsule form at any health or drug store. Just grind the pill into a powder and mix it into the base cream until it vanishes. You can also add other ingredients to the mixture, such as almond oil, Shea butter, olive oil, bananas, avocado, vitamin E, or any other home remedy commonly used on the skin. You can then store this cream in the original base cream bottle or use any other glass or plastic container with a lid. You should apply the product in the morning and then again before you go to bed.

Use of Lanolin Cream

Lanolin is another word used to describe wool wax, wool fat or wool grease. It is a term that refers to the grease that woolly animals secrete through their sebaceous glands. Although the lanolin typically used is obtained from sheep, it xan come from any wool producing animal. It is often used as either a skin ointment or waterproofing wax because of its moisturising and water resistant nature. Lanolin is often used as a raw material in the production of shoe polish.

Production

Lanolin is recovered from wool after an animal is shorn. This can be any wool--alpaca, sheep, goat or any other animal. Crude lanolin makes up a significant proportion of most freshly shorn wool, accounting for anything between 5 and 25 percent of the wool's total weight.

After the wool is removed from the animal, it is washed in hot water along with a special detergent. This detergent is designed to remove dirt, lanolin and sweat salts or suints from the wool. During the washing process, lanolin is continuously removed using centrifugal separators, the lanolin collecting into a wax-like substance.

Health Issues

Lanolin is used in many products including cosmetics and lubricants. However, it is most popularly used as a primary ingredient in moisturising creams. As lanolin is essentially pure grease, it is very effective at moisturising your skin and is used by a variety of people for a variety of reasons.

Not only does lanolin soothe your skin, it is also both hypoallergenic and bacteriostatic--limiting to the growth of bacteria. This makes it very useful for medicinal purposes, especially when at full strength. Lanolin cream is most often used by breastfeeding mothers to soothe cracked or sore nipples. However, lanolin cream can also be used to relieve chapped lips, diaper rash, dry and itchy skin and rough feet, among others. As it is readily absorbed through the skin, it is good for effectively facilitating the absorption of other medicines that it is mixed with into the body.

Other Uses

Although lanolin is primarily used for medicinal purposes, it also has some other practical uses that exploit its water resistance and ability to lubricate. Lanolin oil is often used to lubricate brass instruments such as trumpets and trombones. It is very effective at helping valves and slides work smoothly.

Lanolin oil is often also used in shaving cream to moisturise the skin during and after the shaving process. Baseball gloves are commonly broken in and softened using lanolin oil as well -- commonly the lanolin in shaving cream. Lanolin is also used as a raw material to produce Vitamin D3. Cosmetic products often contain lanolin, however if the lanolin that the product contains isn't 100 percent pure, some people may suffer an allergic reaction.

Natural Herbal Remedies for Hyperactivity in Children

Children with hyperactive disorder, called attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are plagued by the inability to stay focused, the inability to control behavior, and hyperactivity. This disorder prevents many children from doing well in school and from forming meaningful friendships with other kids. Drug treatment is available, but there is debate as to whether drugs are really in a child's best interest. If you are wary of drug treatment, try a natural remedy. Note, however, that if the condition is particularly serious, you should take your child to see a doctor.

Herbal Remedies

Before diving into a herbal treatment course for your child, have your child assessed by a medical professional to determine if, in fact, your child is hyperactive. While you may notice symptoms such as the inability to sit still or excessive talking coupled with anxiety, your child might not be diagnosed as hyperactive.

If your child is diagnosed with ADHD, a herbal course of treatment could help alleviate the symptoms. Some herbal remedies contain multiple herbs and natural ingredients. Other herbs, taken by themselves, could achieve similar results. For instance, St. John's wort, wild lettuce and chamomile are said to have calming effects on the body, according to care2.com. Combining these with herbs that improve concentration and memory (such as ginseng or gingko biloba) could help calm your child's hyperactivity and increase his ability to recall things and focus. Experiment with these herbs and watch for any improvement. If your child does not improve, return to a medical professional to seek advice on what course to take next.

What Are the Functions of Probiotics?

What Are the Functions of Probiotics?

The World Health Organization defines probiotics as live microorganisms that offer benefits to the host when ingested. These good bacteria are used in complementary and alternative medicine to treat illness. Personal bacterial balance promotes overall wellness.

Function

Probiotics reduce the growth of harmful bacteria, aid in digestion, boost immune function and assist the body in the production of vitamins.

Types

Probiotics are present in foods such as yogurt and miso, and probiotics are sold as supplements in powder, tablet and capsule form.

Potential

Research conducted by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine in collaboration with the American Society for Microbiology demonstrated that probiotics have small benefits in treating diarrhea, fungal infections, urinary infections, irritable bowels, intestinal infections and to prevent recurrences of bladder cancer.

Considerations

No two strains of bacteria are alike, so each probiotic is composed of a unique strain of bacteria, some strains providing more benefits than others. Though probiotic bacteria is not harmful to the body, some people may experience mild stomach discomfort.

Interesting Fact

The colon maintains its health with a balance of good and bad bacteria. The ideal balance is 85 percent good to 15 percent bad.

Earache Home Remedy Solutions With White Vinegar

When looking to get relief from an earache, home remedy solutions with white vinegar can help ease the pain associated with ear pains, swimmer's ear, and excess ear wax. All of these can be the result of various irritants, and the vinegar can combat only a few specific causes of the pain; so be sure of what you're dealing with before using the remedy. Persistent pain should lead you to a doctor, but these home remedies are good for simple problems.

Treating Swimmer's Ear

Very often, people think of this disorder as nothing more than water in your ear, but that is not the case. In fact, swimmer's ear is caused by a fungal infection within the inner ear. This is where earache home remedy solutions with white vinegar come into play. The website myhomeremedies.com lists a splendid home remedy: Combine fresh water and vinegar in a 50-50 mix, and then place a few drops of the solution in your ear(s). By wiggling your head, you can ensure that the liquid gets all the way in. Don't be concerned if a bit of it dribbles out; the acid in the vinegar will be effective in changing the pH in your ear such that the fungus is unable to continue growing. Vinegar has acetic acid, which is the active ingredient in several over-the-counter earache remedies. According to fatfreekitchen.com, acetic acid is an agent that will effectively heal a mild infection.

Other Aches

Now, some ear pains can be due to something as simple as water building up in the inner ear. So, only use the vinegar solution in the case of bacteria or fungus. Each of those cause ear pain, headache, and sometimes a mild fever. With both of these forms of earaches, the infectious agent thrives in a base pH environment. So, as vinegar is an acid, as previously mentioned, it is effective in combating them.

A good way to know if earache home remedy solutions with white vinegar will work for you is by touching and/or tugging on your ear. If either of those actions cause pain, you may have a bacterial or fungal infection.

Seeking Other Care

In the case of fluid buildup in the ear, pains that spread to the throat, nose and/or mouth, or a pain that persists for more than a few days, check with your family doctor for a different treatment.

How to Use Balance and Proprioception Training to Prevent Injuries

Proprioception training was developed for use in physical rehabilitation, to help patients regain their balance after an injury. However, many sports enthusiasts have also found it to be beneficial in preventing injuries they might suffer while playing. There are many ways to practice this type of training. When you engage in any athletic activity--whether it be dancing, snowboarding or even walking or running--you need to follow some sort of pre- and post-workout stretch routine and/or perform some other low-impact exercise to avoid injury. Here's how to incorporate proprioception training into your chosen activity.

Instructions

    1

Make yourself more aware of your bodys movements when training. This consciousness, and the attendant need to try and improve your movement, is an element of proprioception.

    2

Start with an easy exercise that helps promote this awareness. Stand on one foot, then reach forward and touch the floor in front of you and stand up again. Do this several times as your pre- or post-workout exercise regimen.

    3

Work with a partner. Play catch with a medicine ball while balancing on one foot.

    4

Balance on one foot for five minutes and then on the other foot for another five minutes.

    5

Use balance pads when jogging, running or practicing your sport. These come in different densities and softness, and they improve your balance.

    6

Add balance exercises to your weight-training exercises. Incorporate some weightlifting exercises you can do while standing on one foot or the other.

    7

Take up yoga. Many of the exercises in yoga have to do with finding both your inner and outer balance.

How to Dissolve Keratin

How to Dissolve Keratin

Keratin buildup, common in skin, can lead to blocked hair follicles and small white bumps. When this natural skin protein causes a blockage, the condition is known as keratosis pilaris. While the bumps look like acne, they actually contain hardened keratin rather than pus. There is no cure for the harmless condition, but with a steady skin-care regimen, you can limit the problem.

Instructions

    1

Rub a cloth gently over keratin deposits in a circular motion.

    2

Rinse the affected area of your skin with warm water. Pat your skin mostly dry with a towel without rubbing or squeezing the deposits. Leave your skin slightly damp.

    3

Apply a lotion containing either lactic acid or urea. As it helps moisturize your skin, it will begin to dissolve the keratin.

    4

Repeat these steps for a few weeks. If you still notice a problem, apply a cream with a Helix Aspersa Muller complex as an ingredient. The main component of this complex, glycoconjugates, may help reduce excess keratin.

    5

After you have reduced the appearance of keratin on your skin, continue a steady moisturizing routine to prevent future keratin deposits.

How to Use Herbs as Alternatives to Prescription Drugs

How to Use Herbs as Alternatives to Prescription Drugs

Herbal remedies have been in use far longer than prescription medications. In fact, the original intent behind pharmaceutical companies was to capture the active ingredients found in herbs. Over time, this gave way to the creation of synthetic ingredients that are the main component of many types of prescription medications today. Since the original prescription medication was a more potent form of herbs, it's possible to use herbal remedies as alternatives to more conventional approaches. In recent decades, herbal remedies have become viable alternatives to prescription drugs in the minds of many Americans. That's why there's been a spike in the demand for herbal products, which can now be found in grocery and health food stores across the country. You can't just stop taking your prescription drugs, though, and pick up any old herb. Instead, you have to know what you're looking for and how to use it once you've found it. Follow these steps to learn more.

Instructions

Use Herbs as Alternatives to Prescription Drugs

    1

Discuss the possibility of using herbal remedies in place of prescription medication with your doctor. This is especially important if you decide to forgo conventional treatment, as your doctor needs to be aware of any changes in your health.

    2

Identify the prescription medications your doctor recommended, as well as their uses. Some of the more common prescription medications are antibiotics and anti-inflammatory pills.

    3

Research available herbs very carefully. There are thousands of different types of herbs from all over the world. You'll need to know what herbs are out there as well as what they can do before you begin. A good place to start is the "Herb Research Foundation" Web site (see Resources below).

    4

Decide which herbs you want to take, being careful to consider recommended dosage, possible side effects, availability and price.

    5

Buy your herbs either online from an organic grower or at your local health food store.

    6

Take the herbs as indicated on the packaging. Any deviations may reduce the effectiveness of the herbs.

How to Use Alternative Treatments for Anemia

Anemia is a condition in which the body's red blood cells are deficient or the oxygen-carrying pigment (hemoglobin) is insufficient. Body organs do not receive the oxygen they require to work at their best level when you have this disease. It may cause symptoms of fatigue, lightheadedness, paleness and weakness. Most people dont know that when this ailment is allowed to progress it can become life-threatening. Anemia may be caused by low levels of iron in the blood, but it can also be caused by blood loss or onset of menopause. After a diagnosis is made, advice from your health care professional, including both conventional and alternative treatments, should be followed.

Take vitamin and mineral supplements. Check with your health care professional about adding supplements to your diet. Anemic patients are often deficient in iron. Those with pernicious anemia have a low level of vitamin B12 and/or folic acid. A combination of iron and vitamin C is best, as the vitamin C aids absorption of the iron.

    2

Add herbs to your daily intake of supplements. Because yellow dock has sufficient iron and it is absorbed readily, it is a good choice. Iron can also be found in burdock, dandelion and mint. Most of these herbs can be found in tea form. When they are taken with prescription iron, the absorption rate is increased.

    3

Eat iron-rich foods. Liver and spinach are high in iron. If you dont care for cooked spinach, try adding some raw leaves to a salad each day. If you do not care for liver, add dried beans, nuts, shellfish, cheese, fish, eggs, beef and lamb to your diet to improve your iron intake.

    4

Drink juices rich in iron. Juice therapy may correct nutritional imbalances. Juice made from iron-rich beet greens and parsley and vitamin C-rich oranges, strawberries, peppers, kale and/or broccoli is ideal. You can get more nutritious food by juicing because you could never eat the same amount you can drink.

    5

Press on pressure points on your body. Acupressure is a traditional Chinese technique that comes from acupuncture and uses the same locations on the body, but instead of using thin needles, direct pressure is used. The spleen pressure point, just below the ankle bone on the outside of the foot, strengthens the blood and is helpful for anemia. Another beneficial pressure point is the stomach, to help with the absorption of nutrients. This point is at the front of the leg approximately an inch below the knee.

What Happens When Manuka Honey is Exposed to Air?

What Happens When Manuka Honey is Exposed to Air?

The healing properties of honey are well known, and most people will readily down spoonfuls of the stuff to cure a cold or sore throat. But Manuka honey has something extra. Already a super food, it's an efficient antiseptic and a popular treatment for all kinds of infections and skin complaints. The magic of Manuka honey is not just that it comes from one small region of New Zealand, but what happens when it is exposed to air.

History

More than 20 years ago professor Peter Molan from the University of Waikato in New Zealand identified the extraordinary healing powers of Manuka honey. The Manuka bush grows only in certain areas of New Zealand, and the honey produced from the flowers of this bush contains a nonperoxide antiseptic, a host of antioxidants and a unique, and so far unidentified, ingredient. Other honey loses its potency when exposed to light and heat, but the special ingredient in Manuka honey means it is resilient to dilution from air. Professor Molan called this ingredient the UMF, or Unique Manuka Factor.

Uses

Professor Malon claims Manuka honey is effective on every type of infection, including ulcers, sores, fungating cancer wounds and post-operative bacteria. Manuka honey is also an effective treatment for acne and other skin complaints because of its hygroscopic qualities. When exposed to air, the honey absorbs moisture and so keeps the treated skin moist. This speeds healing and prevents scarring. Clinical trials have shown that the antibacterial properties in Manuka honey are so powerful they can successfully tackle MRSA and Staph infections.

Quality

There are now so many brands of Manuka honey available, all at different prices, that it's difficult to know which one is the best. Professor Molan's UMF used to be the only reliable method for rating the potency of the honey: 10 being the lowest score at which the honey was effective and 25 the highest. Now a new method measures the methogloxyl content of the honey, or MGC. Kerry Paul, chief executive of Manuka Health, prefers this system. The MGC of Manuka honey is up to one hundred times that of ordinary honey.

Warning

Ken Allen, a National Health Service supplier, says no Manuka honey needs a high rating to be effective. He claims that a shop-bought jar of honey with a rating of 10 is a strong enough antiseptic to heal leg ulcers but warns the public to be wary of using shop-bought Manuka honey on serious burns or wounds, because unlike the honey used within the health service, it has been neither sterilized nor purified.

Alternative Cures for a Urinary Tract Infection

Urinary tract infections (UTI) are a common ailment. According to the University of Maryland Medical School, they are usually caused by bacteria. The symptoms of a UTI are pain or a burning sensation while urinating and feeling the urgent need to urinate only to find your bladder is empty. If not treated, the UTI can spread into your kidneys causing an upper UTI, fever and back pain. Treatment with antibiotics works well but it is expensive and some patients experience side effects. Alternative cures for UTIs are available.

Alternative Cures for a Urinary Tract Infection: Cranberries

Cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon) are a popular alternative cure for a UTI. According to the article, "Cranberries for preventing urinary tract infections" published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 2008, they contain a substance that stops bacteria from adhering to the walls of the bladder and urinary tract. Additionally, treatment with cranberries was most effective for women with recurrent infections and reduced the frequency of their UTIs annually. To use cranberries as an alternative cure for a UTI, buy pure unsweetened cranberry juice or cranberry powder in the form of tablets or capsules. The sugars found in regular cranberry juice will only aggravate your UTI. The American Academy of Family Physicians recommends 300 to 400 mg (pure cranberry powder) two times a day or eight oz. of unsweetened juice three times a day.

Alternative Cures for a Urinary Tract Infection: Garlic Tea

The power of garlic can be an effective alternative cure for a UTI according to Bee Wilder, a health researcher and the editor of Healing Naturally. The naturally occurring antibiotics and antimicrobial elements found in garlic kill the bacteria responsible for the UTI. Raw, freshly crushed garlic needs to be used, garlic powder or granules can not be substituted. Drink four cups of garlic tea per day for four days or more. Boil two cups of water, remove from heat, add two cloves of freshly crushed garlic and let it steep for 20 minutes. You can add lemon for flavor.

Alternative Cures for a Urinary Tract Infection: Urine Therapy & Parsley Tea

Dr. James Howenstine, MD, suggests trying a combination of urine therapy and parsley tea to cure your UTI. Collect one oz. of your first morning urine in a clean cup and boil with a handful of fresh parsley and one qt. water. Simmer for one hour. Strain the tea and drink one batch slowly throughout the day. This regimen can be continued for up to ten days.

Warning

If your symptoms do not clear up in a few days, or if you develop a fever or vomiting, see your doctor immediately, as these are signs of a serious, possibly life threatening, infection.

Alternative Lyme Disease Therapy

Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi that is transmitted to humans from the bite of several varieties of hard-bodied ticks. The standard treatment for Lyme disease is oral antibiotic therapy, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). There is, however, a raging controversy in the medical community over a condition reffered to as chronic Lyme disease (CLD), in which symptoms persist for years and do not always respond to antibiotic therapy. Many people with CLD seek alternative treatments for the condition.

The Buhner Protocol

Herbalist Stephen Buhner, in his book "Healing Lyme," published in June 2005 by Raven Press, outlines an herbal approach to battling the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria that has spawned several support forums on the Internet, where people treating their own CLD post testaments to their own experiences.

The Buhner protocol uses three core herbs: Andrographis paniculata, Japanese knotweed and Uncaria tomentosa, commonly know as cat's claw. Andrographis is an extremely bitter herb used in the Ayurvedic system of medicine for treating parasitic infections, such as malaria. Japanese knotweed is very high source of the antioxidant known as resveratrol. Cat's claw is the bark from a South American rainforest tree that has long been used by indigenous people to fight a large variety of illnesses.

These herbs are taken on a daily basis. Others herbs such as astragalus, an herb from the traditional Chinese herbal pharmacopoeia, red root, which is native to North America and was used extensively by the Native Americans, and stephania root, a lesser known herb from the Chinese tradition that is used as an anti-inflammatory, are often added to the mix.

Dr. Zhang's Protocol

Dr. Qingcai Zhang is a prominent physician who attended Harvard Medical School and is on the advisory board to Dr. Andrew Weil, renowned founder of the field of integrative mecicine. Zhang is also a practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine who runs a clinic in New York City that specializes in chronic infectious diseases. He has written a book titled 'Lyme Disease and Modern Chinese Medicine' that was published in March 2006 by the Sino-Med Research Institute. Zhang's protocol for treating chronic Lyme focuses on three herbs: allicin, which is a highly potent extract of garlic; artemisinin; an extract of Chinese wormwood; and HH, an extract of the Asian plant Houttuynia cordata. Other herbs such as Smilax glabrae, or common sarsaparilla, coptin, an extract from the coptis plant, and skullcap (Scutellariae Radix) are added to the formula for Lyme. In China, these herbs were selected for their succeess in treating other bacterial parasites with the unique spiral-tail characteristic (spirochetes) also found in B.burgdorferi, according to Zhang's website.

How to Increase Mind Power

Stress, lack of sleep, a poor diet and many other factors can leave you frazzled and feeling like you're not able to think clearly anymore. Most people can't compete with Albert Einstein in the IQ department, but there are simple ways to increase mind power and think more clearly.

Instructions

    1

Exercise regularly. Walking is a great choice because it's a simple, low intensity exercise that immediately boosts brain power and allows you to think clearly.

    2

Take a daily multivitamin that contains vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, folic acid, selenium and alpha-lipoic acid. These vitamins and minerals help improve memory and boost your mood.

    3

Eat a low-fat, healthy and well-balanced diet. Fish, nuts, olive oil, dairy products, lean meat and green, leafy vegetables are all considered brain foods.

    4

Organize your surroundings. By getting rid of the clutter and organizing your personal space, you are also clearing your mind. If you look around and see clutter, your brain gets overwhelmed and doesn't work to its maximum potential.

    5

Practice brain exercise activities. Puzzles, speed reading and writing are fun ways to exercise your brain and keep it sharp.

    6

Take time to relax when your mind is feeling foggy. One way to do this is through meditation, a relaxation technique that clears your mind and allows you to concentrate harder on other mental tasks once you're finished.

    7

Perform deep breathing exercises by taking 10 long, deep breaths, clearing your mind as you breathe in and out. This increases the oxygen flow to your brain, giving you an instant boost in mind power.

    8

Get a good night's sleep every night. Eight hours of sleep is recommended, but make sure you get at least five hours of uninterrupted sleep. Keep your room temperature comfortable and invest in a good quality mattress. During the day, power naps can give you a quick surge of brain power.

    9

Use herbal supplements such as Ginkgo biloba and Saint John's wort. Ginkgo biloba increases blood flow to the brain, while Saint John's Wort boosts your mood. People usually think more clearly when they're happy.

Home Cures for Tendonitis

Tennis elbow, one of the most common forms of tendonitis, consists of an inflammation in the fibers that connect muscles to bones. To try your hand at mixing up some relief, try one or more simple home cures for tendonitis, from simple rest to a warm bath or cooling.

Stop and Rest

Simply stop the activity that causes the pain, and rest for a minimum of three weeks to heal the tendonitis. Brace the affected area, wear a sling (for the wrist, elbow or shoulder) or a brace on the knee or ankle.

A Whirlpool Bath

Soak in a warm bath or take a whirlpool bath to warm the sore tendons, decrease the soreness and boost the blood flow to the affected area.

The Ballerina Treatment

For a multilayer treatment---especially for tendonitis of the knee---put a moist, warm towel around the sore area, cover it with a plastic bag, wrap a heating pad around it and then put an elastic band of some sort around everything. Leave it in place between two and six hours. Elevate the affected area above your heart, and keep the heating pad set to low to avoid a burn.

Use Ice

To help diminish pain and swelling associated with tendonitis, ice the area. Too much cooling of the body causes the blood vessels to constrict; take care using ice if you suffer from diabetes, heart or vascular problems.

Other Treatments

Mix 2 tbsp. of cooking oil---sunflower or sesame seed oil, for example---with 1 tbsp. of kerosene or turpentine, and apply it to the affect area as a liniment.

Alternately, pound several garlic cloves and mix them with some mustard or olive oil, then place the mixture on the area and wrap with a warm poultice or bandage.

Or take a handful of eucalyptus leaves, crush them and grind them up with some cloves, 10 to 12 mint leaves and some coriander leaf sprigs. Add 1 to 2 tbsp. of warm coconut oil, then apply the mixture to the affected area.

Home Remedy for Kidney Stones Using Ginger Root

Your kidneys eliminate waste from your blood and exit the body in the form of urine. A kidney stone is a crystal that forms in your kidney. Stones can vary in size and are composed of the waste in your urine. They may stay in the kidney or go down the urinary tract and, depending on size, can be very painful. Doctors usually break up the stone or may even remove it surgically, but there is a home remedy using ginger root that may eliminate kidney stones.

Clean your Kidneys

A good kidney cleanse can help clear the kidneys of foreign substances that have accumulated over time, because the body was unable to dispose of them through the urine. Perform this kidney cleanse at least two times a year, if possible. Usually a cleanse takes three weeks. Juergen Buche, N.D., N.H.C., N.I., Phy.D., recommends the a cleanse with the following ingredients:

One quarter cup each of dried hydrangea root, cleaver's herb, gravel root, uva ursi leaves, and marshmallow root.

You also need parsley, goldenrod tincture (unless you are allergic to it), vegetable glycerin, one large bunch of fresh ginger or capsules of crystallized ginger root, 250 mg capsules of vitamin B6, and 300 mg of magnesium oxide tablets.

Preparation

Let the roots soak in a container (preferably non-metal) of 10 cups of cold water for four hours or overnight. Bring the roots to a boil and simmer for approximately 20 minutes. When it has cooled, drink roughly a quarter cup. Use a bamboo strainer to strain the rest into a clean glass jar and put in the refrigerator.

Rinse the fresh parsley in one quart of water for three minutes, and then boil it. Consume a quarter cup when it has cooled. Place a pint of the parsley tea in the refrigerator, freeze a pint, and discard the rest. This remedy not only cleanses the kidneys, but also helps to break up the stones.

Dosage

Mix three-quarters cup of the root mixture with one-half cup of the parsley water. Mix a tablespoon of glycerin with 20 drops of a tincture of goldenrod. Drink the mixture throughout the day in divided doses. The drink should remain cold. If there is any discomfort or you are over the age of 70, take only half the dose. Allow up to three weeks for the kidney stones to dissolve. Keep in mind, however, that the kidney stones can return if you continue to consume fatty meat, cocoa, phosphate beverages, or certain types of tea.

Ginger

Ginger can be used in many ways. Hot compresses from ginger tea may cause a superficial skin irritation, which will take your mind off the deeper kidney pain. In addition, the juice of ginger root may be beneficial in ridding your body of kidney stones. Spice up your meals with fresh ginger or try a tea made of grated ginger root.
Ginger root also comes in capsule form--add this to your vitamin regimen to begin the process of detoxification.

Home Remedies for a Bad Liver

The liver is the largest organ in the human body and performs a wide variety of metabolic functions such as breaking down harmful substances, removing toxins from the blood, and balancing chemicals in the body. When liver health is compromised conditions such as obesity and high cholesterol are more likely. Thankfully, there are a number of home remedies that can be used to restore and maintain liver health.

Food for Liver Health

According to the American Liver Foundation, a well balanced diet that includes foods from each of the four food groups will help you obtain the nutrients you need for optimal liver health. Eat bitter leafy greens such as dandelion, collard, and mustard greens. You can eat them raw or cooked. Their high vitamin content will provide the liver with essential nutrients it needs to regenerate itself.

Foods high in sulfur compounds are also recommended since sulfur is one of the molecules used to help the liver detoxify a wide range of toxins from the body. This includes onions, garlic, and egg yolks. Regarding egg yolks, it is advisable to keep consumption to between 2 and 4 per week. Cruciferous vegetables are also high in sulfur. Add broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, and Brussels sprouts to your diet. Other liver-nourishing foods include artichokes, rhubarb, sprouts, and apples. To make the most of your liver healing efforts, avoid products that actually impair liver function, such as refined sugar, soft drinks, excessive alcohol and fried foods.

Spices for Liver Health

Spices such as turmeric, cinnamon, and licorice have also been shown to improve liver health. Incorporate them into your daily diet by adding turmeric to stewed vegetables, cinnamon to your oatmeal, and drink licorice teas after meals. Lemon is also thought to be an excellent liver tonic. Squeeze half a lemon into lukewarm water and drink first thing in the morning. Parsley and apple cider vinegar are also beneficial.

Milk Thistle

Herbs such as milk thistle can also act as liver tonics to help a bad liver and have been studied extensively. You can buy milk thistle at most drugstores, supplement stores and even at supermarkets. It is available in many forms, including capsules of dried herb, liquid extract, tincture, and as silymarin phosphatidylcholine complex. The recommended dose for adults, according to the University of Maryland medical center, is 200 to 400 mg one to three times a day for standardized milk thistle extracts. In the case of silymarin phosphatidylcholine, the recommended dose is 100 to 200 mg twice a day. As a precaution, consult your doctor before starting treatment with any herbal supplements. Milk thistle is not recommended for children or during pregnancy and nursing.
