    Another exercise creates a bit of sound. While keeping your mouth closed tightly, make loud slurping noises without sipping any liquid first. Your lips might feel different than normal if you do too many of these exercises; you can quit when your lips start to tingle.

Urinary tract infection, or UTI, is an infection occurring anywhere along the urinary system. Natural treatment refers to alternative and complementary measures used in combination with, or in place of, traditional medicine. While people have reported relief and cure of mild UTIs using natural remedies alone, it is recommended that they be used as a complement to conventional treatment to prevent spread of the infection to the kidneys.


    Comprised of the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra, the human urinary system's primary function is to filter the blood and excrete waste--urea--in the form of urine. It also maintains hormone and fluid-electrolyte balance within the body.


    The chief complaint among sufferers of UTI is pain and burning upon urination. Although there is a feeling of frequent urgency, or the need to urinate often, the amount of urine produced tends to be very little. Urine may have an odor and appear cloudy and blood may be present. Other less frequent symptoms include a feeling of heaviness in the pelvic region, rectal pressure, nausea, back pain, weakness and generalized fatigue. The presence of fever is typically indicative that infection has spread to the kidneys.


    UTIs are caused by bacteria, most commonly Escherichia coli (E. coli). Normally, the urinary tract contains very little bacteria, and tends to be sterile. However, bacteria can reach the urinary system in several ways, such as wiping incorrectly (back to front) after a bowel movement, via urinary catheters and diaphragms and through sexual intercourse. Those with diabetes or immunosuppressant conditions are at increased risk due to the inability of the body to fight off infection. Because of changes within the vaginal mucosa, post-menopausal women frequently develop UTIs.

    Urinary tract infections are also caused by viruses, fungi (yeast) and parasites.


    Physicians diagnose UTI by urinalysis. Urinalysis is a test performed by obtaining a urine specimen. Sometimes, a clean-catch or catheterization is ordered. In a clean-catch, the individual begins by cleansing the genital area thoroughly using an antiseptic pad. To clear contaminants from the urethra, some urine is expelled into the toilet, catching the specimen in mid-stream. The rest is expelled in the toilet. With catheterization, the specimen is obtained via a catheter inserted directly into the bladder.

    Urinalysis will allow the physician to determine the microorganism responsible for infection and whether blood cells are present. This will determine the course of treatment.


    While traditional treatment usually includes the use of antibiotics, some people would rather use alternative, or more natural treatment modalities. A licensed naturopathic doctor or homeopath has received specialized training and is an expert in prescribing more natural treatments. It is important to note that antibiotics are recommended for infections that have spread to the kidneys.

    Typical homeopathic remedies for UTI include cantharis, sarspirilla and staphysagria. The dosage is generally 12-30 c, three to five pellets taken three or four times a day. Begin with the lowest dose, and increase gradually until relief from symptoms is achieved. Herbs such as goldenseal root, cleavers and uva ursi are used for their antiseptic and antimicrobial properties. Herbs may be prepared as a tincture or tea and sipped throughout the day. They are also available in capsule form.

    Drinking unsweetened cranberry juice will assist in cleansing the urinary tract. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, it can also be used as a preventive measure against future infections. Warm sitz baths will work to soothe urethral pain and burning. Apply castor oil packs to the lower abdomen and cover with a heating pad or hot water bottle to relieve bladder pain and discomfort.


    Urinary tract infections are prevented by drinking plenty of water, typically two to four quarts daily, wearing cotton underwear, and keeping the genitals and anal area clean. It is important to avoid wearing tight-fitting clothing and drinking fluids that can irritate the bladder, such as coffee and alcohol. Do not douche or apply perfumes, powders or sprays to the genital area. Empty the bladder following sexual activity and always wipe front to back after using the bathroom.


    In the United States, the urinary tract is the most common site of infection acquired while receiving treatment in the hospital. Most occur following catheterization.

    According to OrganicFacts.net, "The juice of fennel leaves and the plant can be externally applied on the eyes to reduce irritation and fatigue of eyes." It also says that using it in foods can aid in treating conditions like macular degeneration. The vitamin C and arginine in fennel can help rejuvenate tissue and reverse the effects of aging.


    According to Drugs.com, fennel can be used to stimulate lactation, although no research is available that supports such claims. Avoid using fennel if you are pregnant or nursing.

Skin fungal infections are a common problem, usually appearing as ringworm or athlete's foot. Fungal infections can also be a problem in recent wounds, particular burn wounds. Silver is frequently used in wounds for its antimicrobial properties, and alternative health practitioners sometimes recommend colloidal silver as a treatment for chronic fungal infections.


    Some alternative health practitioners claim that internal use of colloidal silver can cure a variety of viral, bacterial and fungal infections. However, the internal use of silver can lead to the condition of argyria, in which silver deposits collect in the skin and eyes, turning the color of the skin to a blue-gray.

    According to Stephen Barrett of Quackwatch.com, there have been numerous case studies of patients whose internal use of colloidal silver resulted in argyria. This condition does not usually have any serious effects other than the discoloration. However, according to Mark Crislip of ScienceBasedMedicine.org, there have been no studies of the effectiveness of silver taken internally at fighting infections. Therefore, the FDA has outlawed the claim that taking silver internally can cure any disease or condition.

    However, topical applications of silver are used to prevent infections and to kill bacteria and fungus. Topical silver cream is usually used for burn patients to treat potential bacterial or fungal growth in the burns. Lab studies have demonstrated that silver does have antimicrobial properties, which means it can kill bacteria and fungus. According to a study by Hester Vermeulen and others in the Cochran Database of Systematic Review, silver does seem to speed up healing of ulcers, but the evidence for its benefits is uncertain and needs further study.


    If you decide to use silver to treat fungus, you should use it topically instead of internally to avoid the danger of argyria. If you do want to use it internally, you should choose a preparation with a low silver concentration and limit your use to a short-term duration. If you are using it topically to treat a burn or similar wound, you should talk to your doctor first to make sure it is safe for you to use topical silver. In addition to applying the silver cream, you should change the dressings on your wound frequently and keep the wound clean by washing your hands before and after changing the dressings or applying the cream. Continue to apply the silver cream topically until the wound is completely healed.

Seizures and the memory impairment associated with them are linked to the misfirings of neurotransmitters.

How to Build an Outdoor Sauna


    Decide how you want your sauna to look, and how big you want it to be. (See TIPS for more information.)


    Keeping in mind that the average size of a piece of lumber board (for the walls) is two feet by four feet, with a length of eight feet, and plank board (for the flooring) is eighteen inches in width by ninety-six inches in length, with a two-inch thickness, according to your plans, determine how much wood you will need. Purchase the wood and other things you need.


    If necessary, cut the wood and planks to the lengths and widths you will need, based on your plans.


    Following your plans, build your floor first. Nail four pieces of two by four birch or oak lumber together to form the frame, and then nail additional pieces of two by four birch or oak lumber at evenly spaced intervals to form the supports. Nail down the required number of birch or oak plank boards that you will need to form the floor surface itself.


    Build your wall and roof FRAMES in the same manner as you built the floor, using the birch or oak lumber (refer to Step 4).


    Using the birch or oak planks, build the OUTER walls, and then attach them to the floor.


    Place insulation between the spaces formed by the lumber that was used to build the wall frame and supports.


    Nail the CEDAR planking over the insulation, using the wall frames and supports to hold the nails.


    Finish your roof, if you have not already done so, and then attach it to the structure.


    Build simple bench seats (you can use cedar wood on them, also) and attach them to the walls.


    Install your sauna heater (that you ordered and have provided a power source for), fire it up, and enjoy your outdoor sauna!

    In 1999, Dr. David McMillin and associates at the Meridian Institute of Virginia Beach in a review of studies conducted on the subject concluded that the evidence does not support diet as secondary treatment of psoriasis, although the data are complex and open to interpretation.

Neem oil is widely used in India and among alternative medicine practitioners in the West to combat a host of ailments. According to herbalists, neem oil has antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial, antiparasitic and antiseptic properties. It is also used as an effective preventative treatment against insect infestation. If you're looking for an earth-friendly alternative to pesticides, you can prepare a solution of neem oil at home to spray on your plants and pets.



    Pour one quart of water into a large spray bottle.


    Add 1.5 tsp. of 100% neem oil to the spray bottle. Be sure to read the ingredients on your container of neem oil to make sure it is made from pure neem. If there are added ingredients, they may cause irritation for your plants or pets.


    Add about 1/3 tsp. of biodegradable soap to the bottle. Soaps such as Dr. Bronner's or Biokleen dish soap work well, as they contain only natural ingredients that will not irritate your plants or pets as long as they are used in small amounts. The soap is added to the solution to help the neem oil distribute evenly over your plants or your pet's coat.


    Place the lid on the bottle and shake the mixture to mix the ingredients thoroughly.


    Spray liberally on pets that have fleas or plants with any kind of insect infestation. Repeat the spraying once a week.

Uses of Ashwagandha in Biotechnology

Ashwagandha, also known as Withania somnifera, is a shrub in the nightshade family that has been used in traditional Indian medicine. Extracts of the plant have shown promise in augmenting several maladies in humans, which include inflammatory bowel disease, Huntington's disease, breast cancer and male infertility. However, further research has been recommended to fully understand the molecular workings of this medicinal plant.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

    Ashwagandha has been tested for its ability to treat inflammatory bowel disease, which is characterized by the swelling and blockage of the intestine. An article appearing in the April 2011 issue of "BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine" investigated the effects of a gel prepared from the root of W. somnifera to regenerate the integrity of the tissues of the large intestine using a rat model. The researchers found that a preparation containing 500 g/mL decreased the edema, or swelling, and the cellular death of the tissue associated with this disease. The study concluded that rectal gel containing W. somnifera indicated a significant improvement in restoring the mucus layer of the intestine and greatly reduced the swelling caused by inflammatory bowel disease.

Huntington's Disease

    Huntington's disease is an insidious, genetic neurological disorder marked by the inability to control the muscles and eventually leads to dementia. An article in the June 2009 issue of the "Journal of Medicinal Food" explored the effects of W. somnifera on the decline in motor function and brain activity in a rat model of this disease. The researchers treated the test animals with either 100 or 200 mg doses for each kg of body weight and found that protective actions of the plant extract occurred in a dose-dependent manner to reduce the complications of the disease. The study concluded, however, that further studies are needed to identify the molecular pathways involved before the extract is used for human therapy.

Breast Cancer

    A compound called withaferin A is contained in extracts from the root of W. somnifera and has shown promise as an agent to promote apoptosis, or genetically programmed cell death. A group from the University of Pittsburg published an article in "Molecular Carcinogenesis," which investigated the ability of withaferin A to combat breast cancer by initiating apoptosis of cancer cells. The researchers designed a study to determine the role of this compound in suppressing the actions of estrogen, a female hormone known to advance the proliferation of breast cancer cells. The study found that withaferin A significantly decreased the levels of the estrogen receptors in cancer cells and inhibited the growth and reproduction of them. The authors concluded that extracts of W. somnifera is a promising natural therapy in preventing the advancement of breast cancer.

Male Infertility

    Infertility in men is most often a result of sperm quality and ability of the cells to utilize metal ions for normal function. A study published in the March 2011 issue of "Reproductive Biomedicine Online" documented the effects of W. somnifera in maintaining sufficient concentrations of metal ions in seminal fluid for the proper functioning of sperm cells. The researchers found that sperm apoptosis was greatly reduced and essential copper, zinc and iron ion concentrations were maintained due to treatment with W. somnifera. The study concluded that a three-month treatment of the plant extract was sufficient to improve semen quality by reducing apoptosis and improving metal ion concentration in seminal fluid.

Both are designed to be topical cough treatments for use by people ages 2 and up. They also are intended to treat minor muscle aches and pains. Vicks VapoRub is not believed to cause drowsiness or nervousness. Vicks VapoRub also plays a part in numerous home remedies.


    The active ingredients in Vicks VapoRub are camphor, eucalyptus oil and menthol. The powerful vapors emitted by these ingredients relieve congestion and coughing. Inactive ingredients include cedar leaf oil, special petrolatum, nutmeg oil, turpentine oil and thymol.

Standard Directions

    Rub the cream or ointment onto the chest, throat or aching muscles. Cover the ointment with a warm, loose cloth. Repeat up to three times in 24 hours.

Home Remedies

    Vicks VapoRub is used to cure nail fungus. Rub the infected nail with Vicks VapoRub two to three times a day. After a few days you should see improvement. Continue for at least six months or until a new nail has completely grown in. This will also work on athlete's foot.

    Some people suggest the use of Vicks VapoRub for hemorrhoids. It shrinks the hemorrhoid and relieves itching. Clean the area and apply Vicks directly to the hemorrhoid. Side effects may include a burning sensation.

    Place some Vicks VapoRub on chapped lips to soothe discomfort and soften the lips. Be careful to not ingest the VapoRub. It is for external use only.

    If you have a headache, VapoRub may be the cure. Dab a little Vicks VapoRub on your temples, or forehead, for headache relief. Do not place it near your eyes.

    Cure dandruff by rinsing your hair in a mixture of Vicks VapoRub and mineral oil. Let sit and shampoo out.

    Place a little VapoRub on bug bites. It will relieve the pain or itch.

    Rub Vicks VapoRub on the bottoms of your feet and then put on socks. This should cure nighttime coughing.


    Vicks VapoRub is a topical product. It should never be ingested. If the product is ingested contact the Poison Control Center immediately.

    Discuss the use of Vicks VapoRub with your doctor. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use Vicks VapoRub without a prior consultation with their doctor.

    Do not apply directly to open wounds or damaged skin. Keep any bandages or coverings loose and allow air to circulate.

    Do not apply directly inside nostrils and keep away from eyes. Applying Vicks directly into nostrils may cause the product to be inhaled into the lungs. This could cause a buildup of the petrolatum base and lead to chemical pneumonitis.

    Vicks VapoRub should not be heated or microwaved. Doing so may result in burns.

    If symptoms of cough, cold, rash or muscle soreness last for more than seven days, seek medical attention.

Chelation therapy is a treatment that works by injecting a chemical into the body that binds, or chelates, to heavy metals, including iron, lead, mercury, cadmium, and zinc. The most commonly used chemical is ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (ETA). Chelation therapy has been used to treat lead poisoning, heart disease, cancer, autism and other conditions.



    Review the scientific research. Chelation therapy is an effective treatment for lead poisoning. However, there is no scientific evidence to support its effectiveness with respect to other conditions, according to the American Cancer Society.     Place a bowl in the kitchen or bathroom sink and turn on the running water. Hold your baby next to the kitchen or bathroom sink so she can hear the water running into the bowl. Water sounds are soothing and if your baby will not stop crying because of colic, holding her near the running water may help. The bathroom sink or bathtub might be better because you can shut the door and the small enclosed space will accentuate the sound of the water.


    Get a warm water bottle or a heating pad and place it on your babys tummy. The warm sensation on the babys tummy can help soothe them. Make sure to place a towel on your babys stomach to lay the water bottle on so the baby will not get burned. If you are using a heating pad instead of a warm water bottle, place the heating pad on the lowest setting.


    Get the baby moving. Place your baby in a car seat or infant seat and put the seat beside a running clothes dryer. The vibration can have a soothing effect. Another thing to try is the baby swing. Often, the back and forth swinging motion works to calm the baby. Practice massaging your baby as moving their limbs around can help release built-up gas, reduce cramping and help get the bowels moving.
