How to Take Milk Thistle With Statins

How to Take Milk Thistle With Statins

Because milk thistle is believed to protect and regenerate the liver, its indicated for a variety of conditions as an alternative treatment. Though its a flowering herb, its fruit has a potentially powerful effect on the liver and it could interact with other drugs, particularly lipid-lowering statin drugs.

Instructions

Taking Milk Thistle with Statins

    1

Speak with your doctor about the possibility of a reaction to milk thistle if you're currently on a statin drug. The HCV Advocate, a website for those suffering from Hepatitis C, says that the seeds of the milk thistle plant can slow down or reduce the livers ability to break down enzymes. Because of this enzyme reduction, certain medications might take longer to break down, which means that theyll be in the system longer than normal. This excess of drugs could lead to uncomfortable or even dangerous side effects. The HCV Advocate says that the lipid-lowering drugs Lescol, Mevacor, Pravachol, Zocor and Baycol all have the potential to interact with milk thistle in this way.

    2

Take milk thistle in capsule, extract or infusion form. Supplements should contain 70 to 80 percent silymarin, which is whats extracted from the seeds. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine says the silymarin is the biologically active part of the herb.

    3

Reduce the typical dose if youre worried about a potential interaction with your statin drug. James F. Balch and Mark Stengler, authors of Prescription for Natural Cures, say that milk thistle is beneficial for a wide variety of conditions, and dosage information is different for each one. Balch and Stengler recommend the following for consumption of milk thistle:

Take 200 to 250 mg twice daily for bad breath
Take 420 mg daily for gallbladder problems
Take 600 and 1,000 mg daily for hepatitis
Take 250 mg three times a day for poisoning, psoriasis and substance abuse

If youre currently taking a statin medication and youd like to take milk thistle, start with a lower dose than recommended. If, after a week or two, you dont have negative interactions, consider taking more. As always, make sure to speak with your doctor to see if milk thistle is a supplement that you should avoid.

How to Get Rid of Tonsil Stones Naturally

How to Get Rid of Tonsil Stones Naturally

Knowing what a tonsil stone, or tonsillolith, looks like enables you to diagnose and treat them naturally. These white or cream-colored bumps on the tonsils may or may not cause severe discomfort, depending on how large and numerous the stones become. Before the tonsil stones become inflamed or infected, there are a few ways to remove them at home.

Gargle with Mouthwash or Salt Water

Mix approximately 1 tablespoon of salt with 4 to 6 ounces of warm water. Gargle thoroughly so the mixture reaches your tonsils to loosen the stones. Alternatively, a store-bought mouthwash also works as a gargle. As the tonsil stone loosens, use care not to swallow them. A few days of gargling should loosen the stones without further intervention, but other methods may be required if the stone does not come out.

Fingers

Pushing against the tonsil with your finger is the easiest and least expensive way to remove tonsil stones. While this may cause a gag reflex in some people, it is effective in loosening and removing the tonsil stones. Do not scrape the stones too hard or you may cause bleeding on the tonsil, causing infection. If bleeding does occur, gargle with salt water to clean the area and stop the bleeding.

Medicine Dropper or Cotton Swab

Medicine droppers use suction to pull the tonsil stones from the tonsil. This works best with smaller or partially dislodged stones. Cotton swabs rubbed against the tonsil stones help gently remove them. This may take more than one try for securely lodged stones. Also, do not forcibly pull or poke at the stone to remove it. Take your time to work the tonsil stone loose from the tonsil. Use more than one method if the medicine dropper or cotton swab causes pain.

Water Flosser

A somewhat less invasive way to remove the tonsil stones is to use a water flosser to shoot water toward your tonsils. Spray your tonsils from a distance with the water flosser to remove the stones. Do not spray too close as you may hurt your tonsils, requiring medical care. The gentle water flow should remove the tonsil stones without pain or invasive tools. Using natural methods to remove tonsil stones reduces the need for medical intervention.

How to Treat a Hangnail Using Home Remedies

How to Treat a Hangnail Using Home Remedies

A hangnail is just a little piece of dry skin that appears when the skin around your nails does not get a good enough supply of oil. Hangnails are more common in women but anyone who has their hands in water a lot, or people who bite their nails on a regular basis, can get hangnails. Anyone who does work that leaves their hands dry a lot will get a hangnail or two. People who sort mail all day often get hangnails. There are ways to avoid hangnails and ways to treat them easily.

Instructions

    1

Soak your fingernails in an oil and water solution for 10 to 15 minutes. Take 4 caps of bath oil and mix it with one pint of warm water and let your fingernails soak. This will help soften your fingernails up to make it easy to clip the hangnail without causing any painful damage, and it will help prevent any future hangnails. Once you soak your hands in the oil and water solution, it will be easier and much less painful to clip the hangnail. It is better to clip a hangnail after it is soft than to clip it while it is hard, because clipping a hard hangnail can cause bleeding and possibly infection.

    2

Rub emollient cream on the affected area where the hangnail is and wrap it with plastic wrap. Keep it on over night because the plastic will secure the moisture and keep it in all night. Make sure to take the plastic wrap off in the morning. The emollient cream will keep the hangnail from getting infected and make it easier to clip.

    3

Moisturize your hands as often as necessary to avoid hangnails in the first place. Keeping your hands moisturized will prevent the skin around your nails from drying and forming into a hangnail.

    4

Use vinyl or cotton gloves when working with your hands. If you have your hands in water a lot, perhaps because you are washing dishes, wear vinyl gloves to keep the hangnail from getting any kind of chemicals in it and therefore infecting it. If you find yourself working in a dry area, wear cotton gloves to protect your hands from anything that can cause the hangnail to become infected.

    5

Apply an antibacterial ointment to your hands or just to the area where the hangnail is to keep it from getting infected. This will also help keep your hands and the area where the hangnail is moisturized.

Natural Herbs for Healing a Yeast Infection

If you have ever had a yeast infection, you know how uncomfortable it can be. An overgrowth of the organism Candida albicans causes yeast infections; symptoms include vaginal itching, burning and a thick, yeasty- or foul-smelling discharge. You can effectively treat a yeast infection at home with easy herbal remedies. Mix up your own yeast infection remedy at the first sign of symptoms.

Echinacea

Take one dropperful of echinacea tincture in 1/2 cup of warm water up to four times a day for two weeks. Echinacea, which boosts the immune system, may lose its effectiveness after two weeks. If your yeast infection has not cleared up in that time, contact your health care provider.

Anti-Yeast Herb Mix

Drink this herbal mixture as a tea. Mix together 2 teaspoons of sage, 2 teaspoons of mullein, 2 teaspoons of raspberry leaf and 1/4 teaspoon of goldenseal root. Mix the herbs with one pint of water and bring to a boil. Cover the pot and remove from heat. Let steep for 15 minutes. Strain the tea before drinking. Take it between meals or 30 minutes before eating. You can mix this tea with an equal part of cranberry juice to improve its flavor.

Herbal Douche

Use this douche every other day. If your yeast infection is severe, use every day for a week. Mix together the following: 1/2 ounce dry anti-yeast herb mix (follow recipe above), 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon plain yogurt and 1 small drop tea tree oil. Mix anti-yeast herb mix with one quart of water, boil, remove from heat and steep for an hour. Strain before adding other ingredients, place warm mixture in a douche bag and using a steady, easy pressure, use the mixture as a douche. This mix should help to clear up the infection quickly.

Colloidal Silver & Swine Flu

Colloidal Silver & Swine Flu

Before the advent of simple microbiology and modern chemistry, physicians and healers of all types used colloidal silver to treat many ailments. Science has since disproved the effectiveness of colloidal silver in treating any medical condition. In fact, it may cause more problems than it solves.

Colloidal Silver

Colloidal silver is silver that is suspended in water or oil for oral consumption or application on the skin. It is the same kind of silver that is used in coins and metal works. Some companies and individuals have claimed that ingesting colloidal silver cures infections and treats conditions like the swine flu.

The Science of Silver Use

Contrary to some claims, silver is not an essential part of the human diet. It also has not been scientifically shown to be better than vaccines or antivirals in preventing or treating swine flu. This has not stopped the use of colloidal silver as an influenza remedy, however. Those who use colloidal silver must be warned of the potential side effects of its use, however.

Argyria

The most common side effect of the use of colloidal silver is a skin condition called argyria. Argyria is the darkening (or blue tinge) of the skin as silver deposits form under the skin. While it is not a serious health effect of colloidal silver use, it is irreversible. According to Dr. Brent A. Bauer of the Mayo Clinic, rare risks of continued colloidal silver use include seizures, kidney damage and skin irritation.

How to Use IP6

How to Use IP6

Current treatments for cancer include drugs that remove iron from the body, because tumors use iron to grow. However, these drugs are toxic. The rice bran extract IP6 (inositol hexaphosphate) has similar iron-removing properties without the toxicity. However, as Bill Sardi complains on the Lew Rockwell website, while animal and laboratory tests "conclusively prove IP6 is an effective and non-toxic anti-cancer molecule," mainstream medicine has been slow to take notice and conduct human trials. Academic studies, however, have so far been encouraging.

Some believe IP6 may be useful in treating heart disease, diabetes, kidney stones, depression and Parkinson's disease. It is also an antioxidant and boosts the immune system.

Instructions

    1

Take IP6 extract in powdered form or in capsules. While it is possible to increase your intake of IP6 by eating seeds, whole grains and bran, for example, the extract is more easily absorbed by your body.

    2

Take the recommended dose according to whether you are using IP6 as a preventative measure or (if you currently have cancer) as a therapeutic measure. The Flora Health website says, "Experts recommend taking a daily dose of 800-1,200 mg of inositol hexaphosphate along with 200-300 mg inositol as a general preventative measure. In patients with cancer or at high risk for cancer, experts recommend a dose in the range of 4,80 -7,200 mg IP6 along with 1,200-1800 mg inositol."

    3

Take your IP6 supplement on an empty stomach whether it is in capsule or powder form.

The Effects of Pool Chlorine on Healing Wounds

For most people, spending time in the pool is about having fun or relaxing in the sun, but did you know that going swimming in a properly chlorinated pool can actually benefit your skin? Minor cuts, scrapes, or burns react positively when immersed in chlorinated pool water during a day at the pool. Despite its benefits, chlorinated pool water is a chemical that can have adverse effects on the skin if not enjoyed with care. Check out the guidelines below before diving in.

Function

Chlorine is added to swimming pools in order to prevent the growth of bacteria in the water. The chemical has antibacterial properties that will not only kill germs in a swimming pool but on anything in comes in contact with, including your skin. Often, someone who has a minor cut or even a mosquito bite and spends some time immersed in chlorinated waters will find his condition has improved after swimming the pool. When chlorine in the water penetrates the skin, it will help kill the bacteria in the wound. As the infection subsides, the wound will begin to heal.

Misconceptions

In recent years, chlorine has received a reputation for having adverse effects on the body. When applied in concentrated form or allowed to penetrate the body for excessively long periods of time, chlorine can have a negative impact on the skin. Discomfort can occur as a result of dryness or rashes can develop leading to irritation. However, properly chlorinated water in small doses does not pose any risk.

Internal Wounds

While chlorinated water can positively effect the skin, it should never be allowed to touch internal wounds, such as sores on the eyes or the lining of the mouth. The soft tissue lining these parts of the body are prone to irritation and have little defense against bacteria in the water. If chlorinated water touches these areas, they should be flushed thoroughly with clean, fresh water.

Acne

Sores on the face, such as those caused by acne, can benefit from limited but regular exposure to chlorinated water. Acne is often caused by bacteria and oil building up in the the pores. Because chlorinated water has a drying effect, when it penetrates the pores it will help reduce oiliness and eliminate any existing bacteria. It should be noted, though, that exposure to chlorine for extended periods of time can exacerbate acne wounds. If the skin dries too much, the body will overcompensate for the dryness by increasing oil production, which can worsen acne. If you will be spending many hours in and around chlorinated water, rub an oil-free moisturizer into the skin directly after swimming to replenish the skin's moisture levels.

Warnings

Chlorinated pool water should never be allowed to touch open, fresh wounds. If the wound is releasing bodily fluids, such as blood, it could not only contaminate the pool water for other swimmers, but the infection may worsen due to the presence of bacteria in the pool water. If a wound has scabbed over then a swimmer can safely enter the water. The scab will help prevent any outside bacteria from entering the wound. Finally, it is important to remember that chlorine is a chemical that can cause adverse reactions when used excessively or in highly concentrated amounts.

How Do Ionic Foot Baths Detox the Body?

How Do Ionic Foot Baths Detox the Body?

Function

According to the International Institute of Holistic Healing, the function of an ionic foot bath is to improve health and energy and detoxify the body by drawing out toxins through a person's feet. The ionic foot bath is said to work by using stainless steel and brass electrodes in a foot bath of warm water to cleanse the person's body by drawing out toxins, which are visible as color changes in the water.

Process

A person immerses the feet in the ionic foot bath and keeps them submerged for 30 to 45 minutes. During this time, the ionic charge in the water is supposed to draw out toxins from food, pollution, chemicals and other environmental sources that has build up under the skin layers of the feet. The water changes color during the process based on the particular toxins being drawn out of a particular individual.

Frequency

According to Ionic Oasis, people between the ages of 10 and 65 can have an ionic foot bath every other day, up to three sessions per week. Each session typically lasts between 30 and 45 minutes.

Controversy

Device Watch, a watchdog group, says that the ionic foot bath does not have any detoxification benefits. The organization claims that a person's skin cannot excrete toxins. Instead, the liver and kidneys break down toxic substances, which are then excreted in urine. Device Watch says the color changes in the water are likely caused by metal and that the water will change even when a person is not using the foot bath.

Thought Field Therapy for Weight Loss

Thought Field Therapy (TFT) is an alternative remedy for weight loss. It consists of externally stimulating the body along acupuncture meridians by tapping in a specifically sequenced order. Although heralded as a cure for many suffering from obesity, there are no scientific studies to verify its effectiveness. TFT is not considered a replacement for a conventional medical weight loss treatment.

Tapping Natural Energy Fields

Thought Field Therapy (TFT) realigns the bodies energy fields the same way acupuncture does. Negative thoughts and emotions store in the body obstructing the bodies natural energy flow which can result in trapped energy which manifests as excess weight. By gently tapping along acupuncture meridians in a specific sequence, the energy flow of the client is restored.

Hidden Reasons for Weight-Gain

TFT attempts to resolve the underlying issues behind binge eating and obesity. Binge eating and compulsive eating can be related to past traumas and anger. The client undergoing TFT is asked meditate on his problems and then to tap the body in specific places in a specific order. This is said to re-balance the clients energy and eliminate negative emotions almost immediately.

The "Gold Standard"

Dr. Roger Callahan, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and the founder and developer of the Callahan Technique which uses TFT along with good nutritional support for mental health and weight control. Dr. Callahan is the author of numerous books including, "Tapping the Healer Within." His credentials include being the president of The American Academy of Psychologists in Marital and Family Therapy. He is also a private psychotherapist who is currently licensed in New York and California.

Dr. Callahan has spent 22 years developing his TFT technique. He claims that his technique balances the bodies energy system and eliminates negative emotions in minutes and that he has a very high success rate with his clients. Dr. Callahan teaches common TFT "recipes" or algorithms which are codes in books and also on audio tapes for weight loss. Dr. Callahan's technique of tapping is considered the "Gold Standard" in its effectiveness which can be calculated by monitoring heart rate.

How to Fill Gelatin Capsules

How to Fill Gelatin Capsules

As alternative medicine becomes more prominent as a way to treat and prevent disease, filling gelatin capsules with a personalized blend of herbs, vitamins or amino acids is becoming more commonplace. A gelatin capsule is composed of a base end, which acts as a receptacle for the substance to be held, and a cap end, which fits tightly over the base. There are a variety of gelatin capsules available on the market. For example, some capsules have a locking cap end to ensure there is no leakage of the contents, whereas other types come in a variety of colors to make identification easier. Filling gelatin capsules by hand ensures quality and consistency in a supplement.

Instructions

    1

Spray a large flat surface with the bleach-based spray cleaner and wipe it thoroughly with a paper towel. This surface will need to be wiped down each time a new supplement is used. Unintentionally mixing supplements can be dangerous. After spraying, close any accessible windows or doors; this will keep out any breezes and ensure that the conditions are mostly sterile.

    2

Put on the medical gloves. Using the scale, measure how much supplement will be used. It is important to be sure that the first capsules filled are precise to dosage specifications. After filling a few capsules, it is possible to approximate the amount of product that each capsule should contain. If there is any doubt as to whether the dosage is correct, be sure to double check the measurements. To determine dosage, speak to a doctor or alternative medicine practitioner.

    3

Scoop of the supplemental product, either off the scale or off the table, into the longer, base end of the gelatin capsule. With the other hand, use the cap end to scoop the rest of the product. Bring both ends of the capsule together.

    4

Apply gentle pressure to both sides of the capsule to seal it. If using empty capsules with an added locking mechanism, make sure that it is engaged. Lay the capsule down and begin the next one.

    5

Store filled capsules in a cool, dry location. Determine the shelf-life of the supplemental product used. Sometimes, using loose powder to fill gelatin capsules reduces the time it will remain biologically effective. Store the capsules in a sealable bag or pill bottle.

Natural Ways to Combat Allergies

According the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America website, an estimated one in five, or 50 million, Americans suffer from some type of allergy, including seasonal allergies. Many of the prescription drugs used to treat the symptoms caused by these allergies are very expensive and have various unwanted side effects. An alternative to these drugs includes several natural ways to combat allergies.

Lifestyle Changes

Keep all car windows closed when driving to avoid contact with dust and allergens. Keep household windows closed as well. Use air conditioning to cool autos and rooms, but make sure filters are clean. Do not use window fans as they can pull pollen and other allergens in from outside. Keep clutter at a minimum to prevent dust from building up, and vacuum often with a vacuum cleaner that has an efficient filter.

Nasal Irrigation

Flushing the nostrils with salt water removes pollen and other allergens and helps treat allergies and other forms of nasal congestion, according to an article written by Lynn Kelly and published in Mother Earth News in August/September 2006 (also online). The process involves a small, inexpensive device called a neti pot and a solution of to tsp. of noniodized salt dissolved in one cup of lukewarm water mixed in the pot. Bend over the sink with your head tilted to one side. Place the spout of the neti pot in one nostril and pour about half the solution into the nostril so that it drains out the other. Flush the other nostril in the same way. Finish by gently blowing out through each nostril will holding the opposite one closed. Flush nostrils twice a day.

Herbal Supplements

Quercetin is a natural plant-derived antioxidant compound that is found in many foods. It helps stabilize mast cells and prevents the release of histamine. While it is found naturally in citrus fruits, onions, apples, broccoli and other foods, allergy sufferers may need to use supplements, beginning their regimen at least six weeks before allergy season starts, to build up a level high enough to prevent allergy attacks. Dosage should be discussed with a physician before beginning, especially if any other health problems are present.

Stinging nettle in capsule form acts as a natural antihistamine as does butterbur, which may be hard to find in the United States. Also, since butterbur is a member of the ragweed family, it may make symptoms worse in some people.

Nutrition and Diet

What you eat may help combat seasonal allergies. Foods such as apples, bananas and onions help build your immune system and have anti-inflammatory properties. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as tuna, salmon and walnuts, may also help prevent allergies. Water is especially important. Drink at least eight to 10 glasses of filtered or bottled water a day to help hydrate your body and keep it working efficiently while it wards off allergy attacks.

Natural Cures for Hodgkins Lymphoma

Hodgkins lymphoma is a cancer of the lymph tissue which stores most of the body's immune function. Lymph tissue is organized into lymph nodes in various parts of the body. The cancer most commonly strikes young boys and older men. There are natural treatments that can help with this condition, but it is important to use them in conjunction with standard cancer treatments. Always be sure to tell your doctor if you are taking any supplements. The herbs listed here should only be used by adults.

Herbal Treatments

Astragalus stimulates T-cells, which are the immune cells responsible for fighting off infection and harmful effects from bacteria, viruses and cancerous cells. Take 1,000 mg three times daily. Do not use astragalus if you have a fever or a skin infection.
Siberian ginseng increases T-cell production and activity. Take it in the form of eleutherococcus extract as directed on the label.
There are two Chinese medicinal formulas that are commonly used to treat this form of cancer. Capital Chi Pill helps deal with many of the issues caused by Hodgkins lymphoma, such as shortness of breath, soreness and weakness in the lower back, light-headedness, vertigo, tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and hearing loss. Six Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia (Liu Wei Di Huang Wan) relieves bone pain that often accompanies this cancer.

Other Suggestions

Do not take vitamin C in the sodium ascorbate form. A study published in a 1979 edition of the "Scottish Medical Journal" found that this form caused a flare-up of symptoms. Acerola, a natural form of vitamin C, does not have this effect. Take it as directed on the label.
Avoid ham and liver. A study published in the March 1990 edition of "Nutrition and Cancer" found that these meats worsened symptoms of the disease.
There is an active protein, called thymopoietin, in beef spleen that can reduce the loss of immune defenses during chemotherapy. A common brand is Golden Spleen 500, made by Enzymatic Therapy.

How to Remove Warts from the Palm of a Hand

Warts are caused by the virus known as human papilloma. The human papillomavirus causes a rapid growth of cells on the outer layer of your skin. Common warts usually grow on hands, palms and fingers. They are usually harmless and usually disappear on their own. Even though they are relatively harmless, warts are still an annoyance that can cause embarrassment and most people do not want to wait the many months or even years that it could take for the wart to disappear on its own.

Instructions

    1

Use an over-the-counter wart removal product. There is a wide array of patches and medications available to remove warts. Over-the-counter products require daily use and may take a few weeks to completely remove the wart. Soak the wart in warm water for twenty minutes before applying the wart remover. Use a pumice stone or nail file on the wart between treatments to file away dead skin.

    2

Consult your doctor. There are a few methods that your doctor could use to remove the wart. The most common is cryotherapy. With cryotherapy, your doctor freezes the warts using liquid nitrogen. Cryotherapy is not known to be painful and is extremely effective. However, it may take several sessions for the wart to be removed completely.

    3

Use duct tape. In 2002, a study published in the "Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine" showed that using duct tape was more effective then cryotherapy at removing warts. Cover the wart with duct tape for six days. After six days soak the wart in warm water and rub it with a nail file. You may have to repeat the duct tape and warm water method for as long as two months before the wart is removed.

    4

Rub tea tree oil or vitamin E oil on the wart. Massage the oil into the wart and surrounding skin once a day for several weeks. Use an emery board between applications to file and soften the wart.

Shoulder Massage Directions

Shoulder Massage Directions

The shoulders and the neck are key areas that hold most of the body's stress and tension, resulting in tightness and pain. This pain can radiate into the head and jaw, causing headaches, and down into the back. Shoulder massage, done properly, can relax tightness in the muscles and release trigger points, or knots, which can cause pain several places in the body. Shoulder massage can also relieve stress to allow the body and mind to work more efficiently.

Instructions

    1

Have the person you will massage sit with his arms resting on a lap pillow.

    2

Apply a small amount of oil or lotion onto your hands. Rub onto both of your partner's shoulders.

    3

Warm his shoulder muscles with long, gliding strokes with the full hand beginning between the shoulder blades and working up to the neck and out to the shoulders. Repeat several times.

    4

Knead his upper trapezius muscles between the shoulder and neck by gently squeezing and releasing. Repeat several times.

    5

Apply moderate gliding strokes with your thumbs between the shoulder blades and up into the neck area. Repeat several times.

    6

Repeat the thumb-gliding strokes on the upper trapezius from the shoulder toward the neck. Repeat several times.

    7

Repeat long, gliding strokes along the shoulders with moderate pressure. Decrease pressure with each stroke.

Herbal Treatment for Lupus

Lupus is a condition that causes chronic inflammation of the connective tissue. It results from the body's white blood cells mistakenly attacking its own organs. Antibodies that normally attack harmful organisms latch onto and attack DNA in the skin cells. This condition usually follows a pattern of periodic attacks followed by remissions. Herbal treatments should be used to make conventional treatments like steroids more effective, minimize side effects and maintain control of the condition on days when steroids are not taken. Be sure to tell your doctor about any supplements you are taking.

Herbal Treatments

Chamomile tea can halt the formation of IL-8, which can destroy tissue. Be sure to use German chamomile and drink a cup at a time as desired. Codonopsis lessens the formation of antibodies that target the DNA of healthy cells. Take 1,000 milligrams three times a day. Feverfew alleviates inflammation and pain in the joints. Take 1,000 milligrams daily for as long as the symptoms are present. Hawthorn relieves fatigue. Take 250 milligrams three times a day. Hoelen helps the immune system stop inflammation. It is particularly good at protecting kidney tissue. Mix one cup of tea with 1.5 g of hoelen. Let the tea steep 20 minutes before drinking. Drink one cup three times a day. Licorice relieves pain and inflammation and increases the effectiveness of steroids, particularly prednisolone. Take 200 to 800 mg daily and use for six weeks at a time with a two week break in between. Be sure to use the glycyrrhizin form of licorice. Milk thistle cleanses and protects the liver. Take as directed on the product label. Stinging nettle root stops arthritic inflammation and helps prevent tissue damage. Take 900 mg daily.

Do not use feverfew if any allergic reactions occur. Avoid hoelen if you have any long-term condition that produces excessive urination. Stay away from licorice if you have glaucoma, high blood pressure or an estrogen dependent disorder such as endometriosis, breast cancer or fibrocystic breasts.

Other Suggestions

Take 500 mg of black currant oil twice a day. It is a rich source of GLA (gamma-linolenic acid), which is particularly effective against inflammation. It is also found naturally in flaxseed cereals and oils, and sardines. Take 600 mg of vitamin E three to four times a week. Vitamin E deficiencies are common in people on steroid therapy. Additionally, a study published in the December 1994 Romanian Journal of Internal Medicine found that vitamin E deficiency was usually present in people suffering from lupus before a flare-up of symptoms occurred. Take 500 mg of L-carnitine daily if you experience fatigue after exertion. This substance assists the heart muscle in using fat to make energy. Get your iron supply from food sources unless you are anemic or otherwise instructed to take a supplement by your doctor. Iron in supplement form can cause pain, swelling and joint destruction in people with lupus. Birth control pills can cause flare-ups, so another method of contraception may be more beneficial.

Ingredients to Make a Sinus Wash

Ingredients to Make a Sinus Wash

Using a sinus wash to relieve irritated nasal passages and sinus cavities is not a new concept. People have been using nasal irrigation to relieve the symptoms of allergies, congestion, sinus pain, headache and rhinitis for centuries. There are a number of different ingredients used to make commercial and homemade sinus washes. The ingredients should help flush away foreign bodies like dust, pollen, dander and other allergens. They also should help disinfect and sterilize your nasal passages and sinuses.

Water

Sterile water is the base for a nasal wash solution, so using distilled water or filtered water is advisable. You also can boil tap water to remove bacteria. After water is boiled, it should be stored in a sterile container in your refrigerator. You will need about 1 qt. of water for a nasal wash.

Baking Soda

Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is used because it helps dissolve mucus while the saline irrigates the nasal passages. Baking soda is also used because it helps establish a pH balance in the nasal wash solution. Add 1 tsp. of baking soda to your nasal wash solution.

Salt

Salt is the ingredient that turns plain water into saline, or saltwater. A variety of salt types can be used, including sea salt, table salt, pickling salt and canning salt. Avoid using any kind of salt that has iodine, anti-caking agents or preservatives; these ingredients can be drying and cause nasal passage irritation. You will need 2 tsp. of salt to make a nasal wash.

Karo Syrup

Karo syrup is used in a nasal wash solution to match your body's natural sugar concentration. The addition of a sugar to the solution helps prevent your nasal passages from becoming dried out. Adding 1 Tbsp. of Karo syrup to your nasal wash will do the trick.

Amount of Fish Oil Needed Per Day to Lower Cholesterol

For many sufferers of high cholesterol, those with a family history of it, those interested in keeping cholesterol levels low, and those interested in lowering heightening cholesterol levels before pharmaceutical drugs become necessary, fish oil provides hope in terms of its use as a supplement. What amount of fish oil is therapeutic in terms of lowering high cholesterol is something each individual may want to take the time to look into.

Identification

Fish oil can and its health benefits can be found in oily types of fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, trout and herring.

Significance

Taking fish oil as a supplement increases a person's high-density cholesterol (HDL) and lowers his low-density cholesterol (LDL).

Function

The end result of taking any significant amount of fish oil is a higher amount of good cholesterol (HDL) and greater overall cardiovascular health.

Insight

A greater amount of fish oil in a person's diet will result in the person experiencing more health benefits, but adding even a small amount of fish oil to an already healthy diet can provide some health benefits.

Solution

Eating 100 grams of oily fish three times a week, taking fish oil supplements of about 6 grams per day, or doing a combination of both should be enough to result in significantly healthier cholesterol levels for most.

Natural Lice Remedy Using Essential Oils

Natural Lice Remedy Using Essential Oils

No wants wants head lice a second longer than necessary. Fast, effective treatment is important to anyone affected. But what if you don't want to use the very powerful, toxic chemicals used in delousing shampoo treatments? There are effective, natural alternatives with easily found, affordable ingredients.

Natural and Essential Oils

    Essential oils

They key to getting rid of lice naturally is to use natural, essential oils which feature high levels of phenols, ketones, oxides or aldehydes.

One of the most powerful options is oregano. Lavender, anise seed and cinnamon leaf have also proven effective. In a 1996 Icelandic clinical trial published in Complementary Therapies in Nursing & Midwifery, these oils killed 100% of lice and eggs.

Other essences that work well include bergamot, spearmint, clary sage, petitgrain, pennyroyal, ravenscara, jasmine, benzoin, caraway seed, Roman chamomile, eucalyptus, West and East Indian lemongrass, marjoram and niaouli.

One should apply any of these essential oils mixed in combination with an alcohol (such as vodka). Alcohol will help the essential oils make it further into the skin and follicles.

A typical mixture might be 50 ml of alcohol mixed with 10 drops of an essential oil. Leave the mixture on overnight and then it will wash off with subsequent shampooing.

Other Oils

    Jojoba oil

Tea tree oil has also been proven effective against lice. However the 1996 study also showed tea tree oil kills only 83% of eggs and 93% of adults, so tea tree oil use usually requires two treatments.

Carrier oils are a helpful part of essential oil treatments. Mixing essential oil with another oil that helps permeate the skin often works better than the essential oil alone or with alcohol. In 1999, a group of independent researchers led by Dr. J.H. Price found carrier oils including sesame oil, olive oil and jojoba oil are particularly effective.

Recipes and Warnings

Here are a few preparations that may help:

Mix 1 teaspoon of tea tree oil with 4 tablespoons of carrier oil; rub in scalp and let sit for 10 minutes before washing and shampooing.

Mix 20 drops of tea tree oil with shampoo, work into the hair and let sit ten minutes before rinsing.

Mix one part jojoba oil, four parts olive oil, 10 drops cinnamon leaf oil and five drops tea tree oil; apply to scalp and leave overnight under a shower cap. Rinse, shampoo and condition.

For all of these recipes, finish by using a fine tooth comb to remove any eggs. Then repeat treatment again after eight days to ensure completeness of cure.

Some essential oils and treatments may irritate skin or trigger allergic reactions in some people. Consult a physician before using any treatment.

Alternative Scoliosis Treatments

The treatment for severe scoliosis, or curvature of the spine, has traditionally been surgery. The Harrington rod that was inserted into the spines of adolescents from the 1960s into the 1980s has given way to advances that include temporary rods, electrical stimulation and laser treatments. Several treatments have the most promise as alternatives to surgery.

Considerations

While no alternative therapy has matched the consistent success surgery has had, those listed here offer pain relief in some patients even without total alignment. Since surgery continues to be risky in adulthood, the danger lies in postponing surgery until after age 50, when it is no longer recommended except in cases that are life-threatening.

Yoga

Yoga offers what are considered the most beneficial exercises for scoliosis patients. These exercises are designed to align the spine, with movement timed to breathing to help develop muscles for support. With postures that provide relief through stretching, some yoga exercises are particularly effective for people with scoliosis. These include spinal and abdominal twists along with the joint freeing series, supine knee chest twist, crocodile twist and passive back arch. The head-to-knee pose helps align the spine, while the one leg up/one leg out pose is also helpful. For more information read "Back Care Basics: A Doctor's Gentle Program for Back and Neck Pain" by Mary Pullig Schatz, MD and Mukunda Stiles's "Structural Yoga Therapy: Adapting to the Individual."

Chiropractic

In chiropractic medicine, body structure is manipulated in an attempt to relieve pain. Scoliosis patients are treated with adjustments to the spine as the chiropractor attempts to correct through manipulation a condition known as vertebral subluxation, in which one vertebra shifts its position in relation to the others. With chiropractic treatments, spinal adjustments are sometimes attempted along with supporting exercises, posture changes, or corrective heel lifts in shoes to compensate for a shorter leg. The younger the patient and the more mild the case, the more likely manipulative therapy is to halt the curvature's progress.

Osteopathic

Osteopathy relies on muscle and skeletal manipulation to return the patient to health. Before osteopathic manipulation treatment begins, the practitioner often observes a patient's posture while sitting, bending one knee, balancing on one leg, and attempting to touch her toes without bending her knees. During treatments, manipulation is done as necessary to various parts of the body including the head, pelvis, rib cage and abdomen. Head weights and shoulder weights are sometimes used to return the body to as normal a position as possible. Additional exercises might be prescribed to reinforce treatment or a brace recommended in severe cases.

Documentation

The difficulty with alternative treatments for severe cases of scoliosis is that there is not sufficient documentation to track the effectiveness of treatment. Without conclusive long-term evidence from controlled studies, no alternative therapy has been as successful as surgery has at stopping progressive scoliosis. There are enough anecdotal reports of relief in mild cases, however, to make alternatives worth investigating.

How to Treat Night Sweats with Natural Home Remedies

How to Treat Night Sweats with Natural Home Remedies

Except in cases of infectious disease, night sweats are a common symptom of menopause. New studies are showing that night sweats are also a symptom of andropause (male menopause). Prolonged night sweats cause sleep deprivation and frustration. As women turn away from hormone replacement therapy, many seek herbal remedies for night sweats.

Instructions

    1

Relieve night sweats with sage. Sage is a common herbal remedy for night sweats. Scientific studies have found that sage reduces nightsweats by over 50%.

    2

Reduce night sweats with licorice root. Licorice root contains glycyrrhizin, which has been used to treat female disorders for many years. Menopause is characterized by a drop in estrogen levels. It is believed that licorice contains mild estrogen properties and therefore relieves symptoms of menopause.

    3

Alleviate night sweats with black cohosh. Black cohosh is a North American herb in the buttercup family. Both native Americans and settlers used the herb to treat female discomfort. A recent study upholds the fact that black cohosh relieves symptoms of night sweats because it contains plant estrogens.

    4

Ease night sweats with dong quai to alleviate night sweats. Dong quai is a Chinese herb that acts similarly to black cohosh, in that it provides plant estrogen, and alleviates symptoms of menopause, such as night sweats.

    5

Relieve the effects of night seats with macafem. Macafem root is grown in the high Andean plateaus of Peru. Unlike black cohosh and dong quai, macafem produces phytoestrogen herbs, which nourish the female glands so that they produce their own estrogen. This is considered more natural than plant estrogen remedies. The result, however, is similar. It alleviates the stress and fatigue of night sweats.

Ways to Take Castor Oil

Ways to Take Castor Oil

Castor oil has many uses and has been used for years as a medicinal alternative. One of its primary uses is as a laxative. Although castor oil remains a reputable alternative to synthetic medicine, it is often considered unpalatable. According to Castor Oil Uses, it is described as having a nauseating taste. Other forms of castor oil, as well as other methods of use, now exist for those who dislike the taste and oily consistency. Castor oil cocktails and soft gels can help to dilute the unpleasant taste.

Topically

Castor oil, though typically used orally, can also be used topically for the treatment of warts and other skin lesions and eruptions. According to Health 911, simply rubbing a small drop of castor oil on a wart twice a day and covering it with a bandage has positive results, causing the wart to disappear in three to four weeks.

Orally: Liquid Form

Traditionally, castor oil has been consumed orally as a liquid. While it should only be taken as prescribed by your physician, if you are taking it on your own, closely follow the directions enclosed with the product. Typically, a teaspoon is all that is required by mouth for mild cases of constipation. The liquid form of castor oil is significantly cheaper than other forms.

Orally: Soft Gel Form

As of 2010, castor oil is also available in a soft gel form known as Castrolax, with a similar look to cod liver oil capsules. Castor oil soft gels are equally effective as the liquid and serve the same medicinal purpose. According to Shalimar Herbals, castor oil is considered a herbal dietary supplement used as a laxative and labor inducer. There are many brands of castor oil soft gels.

Orally: Midwife Cocktail

In addition to its use for treating constipation, Castor oil is also used to induce labor. According to Birthing Naturally, you should mix 2 oz. of castor oil with 2 oz. of orange or grape juice and drink at least twice daily. This drink, which causes the release of your bowels, will also stimulate the uterine muscles needed for labor, as castor oil is a natural stimulant laxative which works similarly to an enema. As per Birthing Naturally, "When the bowel is stimulated to empty in this way, the uterus is also stimulated to empty."

Uses of Liquid Fish Collagen

Uses of Liquid Fish Collagen

Collagen is a connective tissue found in the skin, joints, bone, cartilage, teeth, tendons and blood vessels. It is a group of naturally occuring proteins and it accounts for 25 to 35 percent of the total protein in the body. Age can diminish the presence of collagen and give rise to sagging skin, wrinkles, arthritic joints and other health problems. Many have turned to liquid fish collagen, a marine collagen, to restore youth to skin and to help with joint and bone health.

Basis for Use

Liquid fish collagen is derived from the skin and scales of deepwater cod. Unlike animal collagen derived from cows and pigs, fish liquid collagen has a smaller molecular weight -- around 300 dalton; a dalton is an atomic mass unit. Its smaller molecular weight helps with more efficient collagen synthesis, enabling the body to use it to restore skin and bone health. Also, the small intestine more readibly absorbs it.

Cosmetic Use

Age and indiscriminate exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun can affect skin health. Since collagen is the connective fiber that gives skin its firmness, cosmetic industries have included liquid fish collagen as one of the ingredients in their products to restore skin health. Liquid fish collagen is often used in face creams and skin products to boost elasticity and increase collagen production to achieve firmer and younger skin.

Supplements

Liquid fish collagen diet supplements are sold over the Internet and in health stores. Such supplements offer many kinds of health benefits, from improving hair and nail health to helping weight loss to producing healthy bones and joints. The supplements are oftentimes combined with other herbs or substances. The actual benefit of taking liquid fish collagen is still under debate, even though some studies support the effectiveness of liquid fish collagen in treating arthritis-related ailments.

Sports Nutrition

Hydrolyzed collagen undergoes a process whereby large protein chains are broken down into smaller more digestible sizes, while keeping most of the amino acids intact. Athletes use hydrolyzed fish liquid collagen to build muscle mass and to decrease recovery time following injuries. Liquid fish collagen is also used to rebuild joint structures and improve cardiovascular performance.

Natural Alternatives to Antibiotics

While antibiotics are sometimes necessary to treat a variety of conditions and infections, antibiotics are often used when they are unnecessary for treatment. Overusing antibiotics can cause problems with one's immune system, and can disrupt the natural balance of healthy versus unhealthy bacteria in the body. There are alternative herbal remedies to use instead of antibiotics to treat a number of conditions.

Echinacea

Echinacea is an herb that promotes the proper functioning of the immune system, and it has antifungal and antiviral agents that help fend off infections. Echinacea has glycoproteins, volatile oils, polysaccharides, alkamides, and flavonoids that work in unison to treat a variety of ailments. This herb also helps in relieving pain, in diminishing inflammation, and in providing the body with necessary antioxidants. It has been used to treat Candida infections, ear infections, sinusitis, athelete's foot, respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, allergies and wounds. Consuming this herb at the onset of a cold can diminish the time that you experience cold symptoms.

Children can be offered echinacea based on their weight; a child should take one-third of the amount that an adult would consume. The herb should be consumed for seven to 10 days to gain its full benefits; adults can consume echinacea as a tea by mixing 1 to 2g of dried echinacea in 1 cup of steaming hot water for 10 minutes.

Siberian Ginseng

This herb is adaptogenic, which means it helps restore the body to its natural state of balance. This herb is used to improve the functioning of your immune system, and to diminish symptoms associated with the flu and common cold. Siberian ginseng also promotes stamina and intensifies muscular strength, and has been used to treat people with herpes simplex 2 to diminish the frequency of herpes outbreaks. Siberian ginseng contains eleutherosides and polysaccharides responsible for immune system improvement. Children should not consume this herb, but adults can consume the herb in capsule form at a dosage of 3000mg per day for immunological support.

Goldenseal

Goldenseal is an herb that contains berberine, which is used to successfully destroy germs and bacteria, particularly those associated with Candida infections, viruses and parasites. Berberine is also an ingredient responsible for encouraging the activity of white blood cells and improving immunological functioning. This herb can be used as an alternative antibiotic topically and orally.

Children can use goldenseal at one-third the dosage an adult would consume orally to treat infections and viral conditions. Adults can safely consume up to 2000mg three times a day of the herb in capsule form to treat viruses and bacterial infections internally. To use goldenseal on wounds, the liquid extract of the herb can be placed on a clean cloth and applied topically to the area. To treat ear infections, 120mg of the extract can be mixed with olive oil and put into the ear with an ear dropper.

Goldenseal powder can be used to treat infections of the mouth and throat; mix 1/2 tsp. of the herbal powder with 1/4 tsp. salt in 1 cup of warm water and gargle with the mixture. For vaginal infections caused by yeast infections, create the same mixture, allow it to settle, strain the mixture over a cheesecloth to remove any floating debris, and use as a douche once daily for a two to three days. Goldenseal can also be used to alleviate infections of the eye; mix 1 cup of fresh spring water with 1/2 tsp. of powdered goldenseal and 1/4 tsp. salt to create an eye wash.

Home Remedy for Extremely Dry Hands

As you age, your body tends to make less of the oils that naturally soothe and moisturize the skin. Low humidity levels can also make dry skin worse, particularly in the fall and winter seasons. Neglect, bad habits and frequent hand-washing can lead to excessively dry hands. Whatever the cause, you can soothe and relieve dry, itchy hands by using simple home remedies.

Hand-Washing as a Cause

Frequent hand-washing can make your hands extremely dry. Repeated washing tends to remove the protective layer of oils on the skin, and can lead to chapped, dry skin. People in the medical profession often have this condition, because of frequent hand-washing.

Remedies

To alleviate dry hands caused by frequent hand-washing, simply try washing just the palms. As crazy as it sounds, the palms withstand hand-washing much better than the thin layer of skin on the back of the hands. After washing the hands, while the skin is still slightly damp after drying, apply lotion and massage thoroughly into the skin. This will help retain the moisture from the water.

Lotion as a Cleanser

Alternate using a lotion as a cleanser with washing your hands. Use an oil-free skin cleanser, massage into your hands, then tissue off. This leaves your hands clean and well-moisturized.

Bath Oil and Topical Treatment

Use bath oil as an alternative to washing with soap. Massage bath oil into your hands to soothe and relieve extremely dry skin. While not quite as refreshing as a lotion cleanser, bath oil effectively moisturizes dry skin.

Use topical treatments every time you wash your hands and at bedtime. This means massaging an emollient into your hands on a consistent basis. Start out with a mild lotion, graduating up to a dense cream if necessary. In addition, use petroleum jelly as one of the best and most economical moisturizers available.

Another option is to soak your hands in 4 cups of bath oil and 1 pint of water. Soak for 20 minutes to restore lost moisture into your dry hands. Follow up with a heavy moisturizer. If you can tolerate it, put soft gloves on your hands and wear overnight to soften the skin on the hands.

Consult your physician if you continue to be bothered by excessively dry skin on your hands. You may require a prescription cream or ointment.

Natural Bad Breath Remedies

Natural Bad Breath Remedies

Bad breath can have a negative impact on many areas of your life, affecting intimacy, friendship and your self-esteem. There are many products on the market to combat bad breath, but many contain harmful chemicals that simply cover up the problem, not eliminate it. Many natural methods can be used instead to eliminate bad breath for good.

Apple Cider Vinegar and Baking Soda

Vinegar is a cure-all for many ailments. When plagued with halitosis, whisk together one cup of lukewarm water, one tsp. of apple cider vinegar and 1/4 tsp. of baking soda (the vinegar will react with the soda, so make sure your bowl is big). Gargle vigorously with the mixture, bearing in mind that you may not have to use the entire batch.

Cloves

Chewing on cloves can be a great-tasting and highly effective way to get rid of bad breath. Just a few between the teeth, chewed like gum, will release a pleasant spicy taste into your mouth and produce sweet-smelling breath.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide kills the bacteria that causes bad breath, but it is a dangerous chemical and should be used sparingly and only when well-diluted or purchased at a low percentage. Try gargling with a small amount of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide. If the flavor is unappealing, add a little peppermint oil to sweeten.

Salt Water

One tbsp. of good-quality salt mixed with 6 oz. of lukewarm water can leave your mouth feeling fresh and invigorated. Repeat two or three times daily.

Tongue Brushing

It may sound odd, but brushing your tongue is a time-tested home remedy. Invest in a new toothbrush with firm bristles and make this your "tongue brush" (never use it to brush your teeth). If you want to use toothpaste, make sure it contains chlorine dioxide, zinc, or another ingredient that neutralizes volatile sulfur compounds; or chlorine dioxide, cetylpyridinium chloride, or another antibacterial ingredient. Robustly and repeatedly brush your tongue, starting as far back in your mouth as possible, and move forward in outward strokes.

Safe Effective Benefits of Ultrasound Massage

Safe Effective Benefits of Ultrasound Massage

The ultrasound is most commonly associated with the diagnostic ultrasounds used in prenatal exams and medical screenings. Ultrasound massage is a type of therapeutic ultrasound that is used to stimulate muscles, joints and tissues. The high-frequency sound waves set between 800,000Hz and 2,000,000Hz can penetrate as much as 5 inches below the surface of the skin to stimulate cells and promote a variety of safe, effective healing benefits to various parts of the body.

Increased Range of Motion

Ultrasound massage can increase range of motion in the muscles and joints of some patients. According to SpineUniverse.com, ultrasound therapy is often used as part of a physical therapy regimen to relax the patient and prepare the body for physical therapy exercises. The ultrasound waves create a gentle, safe heat deep in the muscle tissue which can alleviate pain, stiffness and discomfort in some patients. Those who suffer from joint or muscle stiffness as a result of an injury or chronic condition, such as arthritis, may experience greater freedom of movement as the tissues are heated and relaxed throughout the body. The initial increase in range of motion allows the patient to work through physical therapy exercises more comfortably and effectively.

Accelerated Healing

Ultrasound massage therapy is also used to accelerate and encourage the healing of wounds throughout the body. Joseph McCulloch, PhD, served as the director of the Physical Therapy Department at the Louisiana State University Medical Center, and his work suggests that ultrasound therapy can affect the natural secretion of collagen in fibroblast cells. Fibroblast cells are responsible for creating collagen, which is the structural framework of the human body. An increased production of collagen can strengthen the healing tissues and promote faster recovery from wounds and injuries of the skin and bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments.

Reduced Scar Tissue

Ultrasound massage is believed to safely stimulate an increased production of collagen that can also affect scar tissue formation. When the tissues of the body are relaxed and able to heal more quickly through the benefits of ultrasound massage, the formation of scar tissue can be significantly reduced. According to SportsInjuryClinic.net, ultrasound therapy may also have an effect on mature collagen throughout the body. Ultrasound treatment can be applied to fibrous scar tissue that may have already formed following an injury or trauma. The gentle pulsations of the ultrasound massage may reduce the appearance of exterior scars on the skin, and ultrasound treatment can also reduce scar tissue that may interfere with movement in the joints, muscles and ligaments.

Alternative & Home Remedies for Thyroid Disorders

Thyroid disorders are a relatively common endocrinology problem. The three most common thyroid disorders are hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and thyroid nodules, according to the Diabetes and Hormone Center of the Pacific. Hypothyroidism is usually treated with a lifetime of hormone therapy through medication, while the other two disorders are treated with radiology and surgery by traditional medicine. There are, however, alternative and home remedies available for those who wish to supplement these conventional treatments.

Iodine

An iodine-rich diet is critical for those with hypothyroidism, according to healingdeva.com. Iodine is an important part of the hormone thyroxine, which is produced by the thyroid gland. An underactive thyroid gland doesn't produce enough of this hormone, which slows down the metabolism. You can increase your iodine intake through dietary choices by eating foods like shellfish, seafood and iodized salt. This compensates for the body's lack of natural iodine production. You can also purchase iodine drops at a health food store. These drops can be added to your food and drinks in order to increase your daily iodine intake.

Dietary Changes

Dietary changes can either boost or suppress your thyroid activity, depending on the nature of your thyroid disorder. According to healingdeva.com, broccoli, spinach, mustard greens, turnips, kale, soy, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower and beans all have a repressive effect on the thyroid. You can add these to your diet if you have hyperthyroidism and avoid them if your thyroid is sluggish.

Herbs

Herbal remedies for thyroid disorders can be taken as teas, pills or drops added to food and drink. Many herbs are available in a variety of preparations, depending on the supplier you choose to use. Nativeremedies.com recommends ayurvedic herbal treatments such as triphala, guggul and ginger for thyroid. David Hoffman of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists further recommends the use of bladderwack for hypothyroidism and bugleweed for hyperthyroidism.

How to Heal With Dry Wheat Grass

Dr. Ann Wigmore, founder of the Hippocrates Health Institute in Boston Massachusetts, helped to make wheat grass known as a powerful health remedy. She claimed that it helped in treating various ailments like fatigue, toxic overload, digestive disorders, cardiovascular problems and even some cancers. Due to the lack of scientific research however, these claims have not been embraced by the medical community. One indisputable fact about wheat grass is its high chlorophyll content. Wheat grass also contains nutrients that aid in improving health. Although many of the health improvements from wheat grass may come from the enzymes available in the fresh juice, dry wheat grass also offers benefits.

Instructions

    1

Use dry wheat grass juice to improve your blood. According to Vanderbilt University, wheat grass is composed of 70% chlorophyll, which can increase the production of red blood cells and benefits sufferers of anemia and recent receivers of blood transfusions. This is due to its similarity in molecular structure with hemoglobin, an oxygen-carrying protein for red blood cells.

    2

Take dry wheat grass juice to cleanse and detoxify. The high levels of chlorophyll in wheat grass are extremely useful for ridding yourself of harmful impurities and can act as a first step in whole-body cleanses. According to Phyllis Balch in her book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," chlorophyll can also help to improve digestive regularity.

    3

Use dry wheat grass juice to protect yourself from harmful radiation. Whether you have been exposed to X-rays or some other source of radiation, the chlorophyll in wheat grass juice may help to protect your cells from the dangerous effects of radiation exposure. If possible, take wheat grass juice before and after the exposure.

    4

Take dry wheat grass juice for its nutritional content. Wheat grass juice is a highly available source of the vitamins A, B, C and E. Additionally, it is composed of the minerals calcium, magnesium, iron and potassium.

How to Make Distilled Water Alkaline

How to Make Distilled Water Alkaline

Having an acidic pH within your body is said to cause a wide range of symptoms, including general immune system weakness and premature aging. You can balance your pH by taking in the right vitamins and minerals. You can also drink alkaline water, which is a basic solution. Distilled water is pH neutral, but you can make it alkaline in order to balance your pH.

Instructions

    1

Pour 1 tsp. of baking soda into a gallon of distilled water and stir thoroughly. A series of chemical reactions will take place that will increase the pH of your distilled water.

    2

Check the pH of your water using a pH kit. Continue this process until the pH reaches the a level between 8 and 9. Do not exceed a pH of 10.

    3

Alternatively, you can use alkaline drops. Follow the instructions for the amount of water you're using. Following the instructions will ensure you get the optimal pH level.

    4

Buy a water filtering container for alkaline water on the go. An alkaline filtration bottle looks similar to a normal water bottle, but it will have a filter containing minerals that turn your distilled water into alkaline water.

    5

Pour your distilled water into a water ionizer for the ultimate in pH level control. Water ionizers use electricity to ionize water, and have multiple pH settings. Some ionizers can also decrease the pH level, making the water acidic. Make sure you choose the right setting for your alkaline water.

What is the Role of Jojoba Oil in Oral Healing?

What is the Role of Jojoba Oil in Oral Healing?

It's time to clean out the medicine cabinet and throw out some of those chemical-laden potions. Natural oils such as jojoba oil are effective cures for common ailments. Not only are natural oils safe but much more versatile than the standard drugstore treatments. Many people are familiar with jojoba oil's benefits for their skin and hair, but few realize it is an excellent treatment for canker and cold sores.

Where Does Jojoba Oil Come From?

The jojoba shrub is a perennial found in southern Arizona, southern California and northern Mexico. A pod containing three seeds grows on the shrub. The seeds are 48 percent to 50 percent oil. Native Americans and Mexicans have used the oil for centuries.

What is a Canker Sore?

A canker sore is a single-clustered, shallow, painful ulcer found anywhere in the mouth. A canker sore starts as a reddened lesion which turns white or gray at the center surrounded by a reddish halo. According to the "Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine," it usually clears up after seven to 21 days but is recurrent in some people. Stress, nutrient deficiency (thiamine deficiency in particular) and gluten sensitivity are all known causes of canker sores. These factors bring about canker sores because all impair normal immune function. It is, however, possible to develop a canker by merely injuring the mucous lining in the mouth.

What is a Cold Sore?

Cold sores or fever blisters are small, painful blisters that appear on the lips, nose and mouth. Herpes simplex virus 1 is the cause of these unpleasant sores. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, most people become infected when exposed to the virus, but only 10 percent develop sores. After contact with an infected person, the sores last seven to 10 days.

How Does Jojoba Oil Aid in Healing?

Jojoba oil resembles the sebum found in skin, and so it does not cause any allergic reaction. It possesses microbial properties which discourage the growth of bacteria and fungal microbes. Its bacteria-fighting power comes from the oil's iodine content. The oil also contains nutrients such as vitamin E, B complex vitamins, and minerals such as silicon, chromium, copper and zinc.

Since the cause of cold sores is viral and canker sores stem from poor immune function, jojoba oil only aids in the natural healing process of the sores. In the case of mouth sores, the oil is desired for its anti-inflammatory properties which reduce pain and speed healing. It also moisturizes cracked lips from fever blisters.

Jojoba Oil Use on Mouth Sores

Use a cotton swab to apply the jojoba oil to sores. Use 20 drops maximum or 2 tsp. daily until condition clears.

Choosing the Right Jojoba Oil

Most health-food stores carry jojoba oil. Always buy organic jojoba oil that is pesticide and preservative free. Read the label and make sure there is nothing added. Organic jojoba oil can be pricey, but a little goes a long way.

How to Fight Heart Disease With Chocolate

How to Fight Heart Disease With Chocolate

There are many things that you can do to fight heart disease. Modern medicine is coming up with new treatments, remedies and surgical procedures to help deal with this serious health problem. Also, your diet and exercise habits can play a major role in your susceptibility to heart disease. However, you may not have known that your Valentine's candy could do just as much for you as other heart-healthy habits.

Instructions

    1
    It's all for my heart...

Eat dark chocolate. Dark chocolate has been shown in clinical studies to be the most highly effective type of chocolate when it comes to fighting heart disease. People who ate a dark chocolate bar each day had a significantly higher number of heart disease fighting compounds in their systems than those who did not.

    2

Consume in moderation. Do not start eating chocolate at every meal of the day. At the very most, you should have a medium sized chocolate bar once a day. Even this may be more than you actually need. If you eat an entire box of chocolates at once, you will just get sick rather than doing anything good for your heart.

    3

Skip the milk. Milk and milk chocolate not only do not fight heart disease, they actually can interfere with the benefits of dark chocolate if you consume them less than 30 minutes after eating your daily dose of dark chocolate. Do not follow your chocolate bar with a glass of milk or you will actually negate any benefits. Furthermore, milk chocolate does not help fight heart disease in any way.

    4

Use the chocolate to replace other calories. In order to be able to consume a chocolate bar every day without interfering with your dietary health or weight requirements, replace other calories with the dark chocolate bar. For example, if you have a delicious, creamy frozen coffee treat on the way to work each morning, you might need to start having straight coffee--literally less than a tenth of the calories of the frozen coffee in many cases--in order to accomodate your new chocolate habit.

    5

Avoid white chocolate. White chocolate is not really chocolate, and therefore does not have the benefits of chocolate when it comes to combatting heart disease.
