How Does an Internal Bath Work?

How Does an Internal Bath Work?

Internal Baths

An internal bath is just another way of saying an enema, or colonic irrigation or even colon hydrotherapy. The idea behind it is that if waste collects and hardens in the colon, this possibly causes toxins to enter the bloodstream, though there has never been any scientific evidence to support this theory. If the theory were proved, it could explain why some people become ill. Other reasons that someone might choose to have an internal bath are constipation, or even as part of sexuality as evidenced by some in the BDSM community.

A Little History

The idea of internal baths, enemas and colonic irrigation has been around since the 17th century, and probably before that. In those days they called enemas clysters for the clyster syringe used. Internal baths were given for stomach ailments as well as other illnesses.
At that time, water was not the only thing used in colonics. In some cases, different herb mixtures were used to flush out the colon, depending on the person's health.

What Happens During an Internal Bath and A Few Key Differences

While both enemas and colonic irrigation are considered internal baths there are a few key differences. An enema will only flush out the lower colon, whereas in the case of colonic irrigation, the entire colon is flushed out.
In colonic irrigation a person goes to a health practitioner experienced in doing colonics. The practitioner puts a disposable speculum into the rectum that has a tube attached to it. This tube is then attached to the colon hydrotherapy unit.
Warm water is slowly sent into the colon. The water causes the muscles in the colon to contract, which is called peristalsis, and this pushes the feces out through the tube where it is then disposed of in a closed waste system. Neither the patient nor the practitioner can smell anything during the process.
A normal colonic session can last up to 45 minutes and at the end, the patient sits on the toilet to expel any left over water and feces.

There is some controversy among physicians as to whether colonics are really necessary, but many people swear by them.

Homemade Saline Solutions for a Neti Pot

Homemade Saline Solutions for a Neti Pot

A neti pot is a small container, typically ceramic, glass or metal, with a round spout shaped to fit the human nostril. People use neti pots to rinse their nasal cavities with salt water as a treatment for nasal congestion, colds and sinus problems. Pharmacies sell over-the-counter saline preparations for neti pots, but the website of the world-renowned Mayo Clinic says you can make your own neti pot solution thats just as effective as the ones you can buy at the drugstore.

Saline Solution

The Mayo Clinics recipe for a homemade saline solution for neti pots calls for dissolving 1/8 tsp. of plain (non-iodized) table salt in 8 oz. (1 cup) of distilled or purified bottled water. The salt solution should be lukewarm, not hot or cold. You can use tap water if you first boil it to drive out chemicals and impurities, then allow it to cool to room temperature.

Saline Solution Plus Baking Soda

Another homemade neti pot recipe, from the National Jewish Health website, calls for adding a half-teaspoon of non-iodized table salt plus 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda to 8 ounces of purified water. The baking soda is supposed to ensure proper Ph balance and help the cleansing effect.

Bulk Quantity

You also can make neti pot solution by the quart, according to the Family Practice Notebook website. This spares you from having to make up solution for each treatment. Dissolve 2 or 3 tsp. of non-iodized salt and 1 tsp. baking soda in 1 qt. bottled water or boiled tap water. If you suffer from dry nose, you may add 1 tbsp. corn syrup to the mixture. If the mixture is too strong, reduce salt by 1 tsp. Keep refrigerated. Pour out and warm 8 oz. of solution for each treatment. Discard unused bulk solution after a week.

Neti Use

Using a neti pot is simple, says the Mayo Clinic website. Fill your neti pot with the lukewarm saline solution, tilt your head to one side over a sink and place the neti pot's spout in your upper nostril. While breathing through your mouth, slowly pour the solution into your nostril. It will flow through your nasal cavity and out the lower nostril. Then tilt your head in the other direction and repeat on the other side. If done correctly, there will be no discomfort. Repeat treatment as needed.

Ear Fungus Home Remedy

Ear Fungus Home Remedy

The ear is filled with bacteria, which normally isn't a problem. When the ear becomes filled with water, though, it can abruptly become a breeding ground for bacteria, providing an optimal environment in which to multiply quickly, leading to a fungal infection. A fungal infection of the ear, sometimes caused swimmer's ear, may be dealt with via conventional medicine prescribed by a doctor. There are, however, several home remedies that may also work. If the symptoms of the ear fungus (usually itching) continue despite your best home remedy efforts, however, it's best to consult a physician.

Vinegar and Alcohol

Mix a teaspoon of rubbing alcohol with a teaspoon of vinegar. Use a medicine dropper to put a single drop of this mixture into the affected ear. Lay on your side (with the affected ear facing up) to help the droplet along. Softly pull on your earlobe to open up your ear canal further. Alternately, dip a cotton swab into the mixture and lightly wipe the inside of the affected ear. In either case, continue for three to five days. When you think the ear fungus is gone, continue one more day, then stop.

Simply soak a clove of garlic in olive oil for two to three hours, then heat the garlic-oil combination until it's warm, but not hot. Dip a cotton ball into the mixture so that it is wet, but not soaked through, then stuff the wet half into the affected ear, to remain in place as you sleep overnight. Repeat this process for 10 nights.

Vinegar and Water

If the skin of your ear canal is obviously irritated, avoid using alcohol with vinegar. Instead, combine the teaspoon of vinegar with a teaspoon of water. Water will help avoid the irritation that alcohol would normally exacerbate. If there's still pain, an aspirin should take care of it.

What Is Wild Yam Cream Used For?

In the 1960s, Mexican wild yam was used to chemically produce progesterone, and this has led to the misconception that the wild yam contains bio-identical hormones. Now, there are a number of wild yam creams on the market sold for the treatment of many of the symptoms associated with menopause. Because the conversion of wild yam to progesterone took place in the laboratory, there's no guarantee that the human body has the same ability. However, that doesn't stop women from buying this cream and using it for the relief of their menopause symptoms.

Menopause symptoms

The menopause symptoms that wild yam cream is supposed to relieve are numerous. Hot flashes, migraines, cramps, insomnia and vaginal dryness are just a few of the conditions this "natural progesterone" cream is purported to alleviate. For women who have experienced the negative side effects of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) while treating menopause symptoms, the lack of those side effects is akin to a miracle.

Replaces negative HRT side effects

The problems associated with the traditional menopause treatment of hormone replacement therapy (HTR) are in many cases life-threatening. The 2002 July issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association reported the findings of an eight-year-long study on HRT. The study was canceled early due to the dangers to the participants. While incidences of colon cancer and hip fractures reduced significantly, risks of breast cancer, heart attacks, stroke and blood clots rose alarmingly.

Proponents of wild yam cream advise liberally smoothing the cream into the skin of the abdomen, inner thighs, breasts and arms. Because the cream is moisturizing, you should also apply it to your face, neck and upper chest. The cream is absorbed directly into the bloodstream along with the "natural progesterone" your body needs.

Other benefits

Depending on which proponents of wild yam cream you listen to, the cream provides relief for a number of conditions. It is supposed to relieve general inflammation, sciatic nerve pain and insomnia. It is also an antispasmodic, which is beneficial for providing relief of menstrual cramps and pregnancy-associated nausea.

Although science has not verified the effectiveness of wild yam cream, there is much empirical data to support its use during menopause. Therefore, if you are looking for a natural way to treat the symptoms of menopause, there is no evidence of harmful side effects. However, if you are taking birth control, wild yam contains disgenin, which can react with the estriol in some birth control, causing it to be ineffective.

Tribulus Benefits

Tribulus Benefits

Tribulus Terrestris is a plant that has been used by the Chinese and Indians for many decades. In the 1990's the use of Tribulus became popular in North America because several Eastern Europe Olympic athletes, mostly bodybuilders, said that they use Tribulous, The root of the Tribulus is the part that is important. It is believed that the Tribulus root can cure many ailments.

The reason the Tribulus plant is supposedly good for several ailments is because it is believed the Tribulous can increase the luteininzing hormones. The luteininzing hormones are the hormones that help the body to create testosterone. In one study the subjects each took 750mg of Tribulus each day and the results were a 72 percent increase in luteininzing hormones and a 41 percent increase in testosterone.

Tribulus was first introduced to North America by bodybuilders because many of the performance enhancing drugs that bodybuilders use increase the levels of testosterone. Higher levels of testosterone in the body will lead to increases in muscle size, stamina and strength.

Bodybuilders commonly use Tribulus, but they usually use it on their own without it being suggested by a doctor. A doctor will most often recommend Tribulus to somebody with fertility disorders. Since Tribulus increases the amount of testosterone made in the body it can help to treat erectile dysfunction and other problems with the libido.

Tribulus has also been found to be an effective diuretic. Diuretics are a type of medicine that will remove body fluids from the body by causing the body to urinate. Diuretics can be used to help treat dysuria and urinary stones as well as help to lose weight.

Blood Pressure

One of the most common ailments in the world is high blood pressure. In men, high blood pressure can occur because of a lack of testosterone. Since Tribulus increases the amount of testosterone in the body it could lead to a healthier level of blood pressure.

If someone has low levels of testosterone increasing the testosterone using Tribulus can be very helpful. If someone already has the right amount of testosterone but uses Tribulus to get bigger and stronger then there are side effects of high testosterone levels. Some of the side effects of testosterone levels that are too high include erectile dysfunction, baldness, acne, nausea, headaches, anxiety and depression.

Home Remedies From Noni Fruit

Many people have never heard of noni fruit. Noni is the Hawaiian terminology, and the noni plant is actually a tree in the coffee family. Tahiti is the most prolific producer of noni fruit. Noni trees produce their fruit all year long, and the fruit is known for its rather strong odor and its bitter taste.

However, there are nutrients in noni fruit that provide home remedies. It is high in fiber and Vitamin C. The oil from the seeds is high in linoleic acid, which may be helpful in treating some skin conditions.

Promoting Overall Health

Noni fruit is taken as a supplement to promote overall health. Dr. Harvey Kaltsas, President of the American Association of Oriental Medicine, cited it as an excellent source of "polysaccharides, fatty acids, and proteins-compounds." Those who take noni fruit to enhance their overall health typically take it in a juice form. You may purchase noni juice online. If, like some people, you find the taste of pure noni juice too strong for your liking, you may also purchase capsules and tablets online or at your local natural foods store.

Lowering Cholesteral

As a home remedy to help lower cholesterol, drink at least 16 ounces of noni juice or take capsules every day for at least one month. This is supposed to help lower your overall cholesterol and triglycerides.

Treating Diabetes

Noni fruit is also used as a home remedy for treating diabetes. Traditionally, the treatment for diabetes is to chew noni leaves, which may be ordered online. The fiber in the noni leaves is supposed to slow the absorption of simple sugars during the digestive process.

Topical Usage

Used topically as an ointment preparation, noni fruit is said to help with skin care and fight inflammation and infections. In skin care, you can use it to increase skin cell regeneration and function. Due to the high levels of Vitamin C in noni fruit, it has analgesic and antiseptic properties and can be applied to rashes and other skin irritations. You may purchase ointments containing noni fruit online or at a health food store.

Like any home remedy, seek the advice of your physician before using noni fruit for treatment purposes.

What Are Some Foods That Help Get Rid of Kidney Stones?

What Are Some Foods That Help Get Rid of Kidney Stones?

Kidney stones are deposits of minerals that develop when urine is not able to dissolve the solid elements in the kidneys. While they often bring on excruciating pain, kidney stones typically do not cause permanent damage. Diet plays a major role in the formation of kidney stones, and treatment typically is focused on lifestyle changes rather than medication.

Approximately four in five cases of kidney stones involve a type of stone known as calcium oxalate stones. These stones occur when calcium binds with oxalates in the urine to form crystals. Stones develop over a period of weeks and may eventually reach a diameter of a quarter-inch or larger. Less common types of kidney stones are uric acid, calcium phosphate, struvit and cystine stones. All types are the result of accumulation of minerals in the urine.

Oxalates are a type of mineral salt that occur naturally in a variety of foods. These salts normally are excreted by the body through the urine, however, when there is an excess of oxalate in the urine, they may bind together with other minerals to form kidney stones. Individuals with a history of kidney stones may wish to reduce consumption of foods high in oxalates, which includes nuts; chocolate; beans; beets; leafy, green vegetables; and black tea.

Low urine volume is a major risk factor for the development of kidney stones. When volume is low, the urine becomes highly concentrated, affecting its ability to dissolve material in the kidneys. As a result, ensuring adequate water intake is the first step toward preventing and treating kidney stones. A study published in the July 1, 1980, Annals of Internal Medicine found a reduced susceptibility for kidney stones in subjects who produced more than 8 cups of urine per day. In order to achieve this amount of urinary output, it is recommended that those suffering from kidney stones drink a minimum of 10 to 12 cups of water per day. Soft drinks are not recommended, as sugar is believed to promote the development of stones.

Orange Juice

In addition to water, evidence shows that a glass of orange juice may also benefit those who have kidney stones. A 2006 study conducted at the University of Texas found that the citrate in orange juice acts to slow the development of kidney stones by stabilizing pH levels in the urine. While all citrus fruits contain citrate, researchers in the study did not find similar beneficial effects with lemonade. For those who do not tolerate orange juice, potassium citrate supplements may work in much the same way, by raising urine pH levels slightly.

According to a 2004 Brigham and Women's Hospital study, dietary magnesium appears to decrease the risk of kidney stones in men. Magnesium levels can be increased through diet, however, it is important to note that many foods high in magnesium also are high in oxalates. Foods high in magnesium and low in oxalates include lima beans, green peas, avocados, bananas, and pumpkin and sunflower seeds.

Alternatives to Botox

Alternatives to Botox

Botox has become a major treatment in the attempt to stop wrinkles and premature aging. The fact that the remedy is essentially a paralysis of part of the face has led people to look for more natural remedies. Here are a few alternatives to Botox that won't cause permanent damage, but they may help to delay and prevent wrinkles. Consult a doctor before adding new supplements to your diet.

It's our propensity for a quick fix that has led to the popularity of Botox. The problem is that the major alternative to the treatment is a long and diligent course of prevention. If we can prevent damage to the skin in the first place, we will probably end up with fewer wrinkles. Skin is easily damaged from the rays of the sun. It is said that young skin that has been sun damaged looks just like old skin that has naturally aged. It is for this reason that you should wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, you should avoid the sun during its peak hours of 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and you should reapply after swimming or when near reflective surfaces like water, sand, and concrete. Drinking alcohol leads to facial swelling the morning after, which can lead to wrinkling. Drink in moderation or not at all to avoid early wrinkle formation. Smoking reduces the oxygen that can travel to the face, which will lead to enhanced skin damage. Lastly, make sure that you aren't scrunching up your face when you make facial expressions, as this can cause natural creases in your face.

Vitamins and Herbs

The life changes in Section 1 are greatly complemented by the vitamins and herbs in this section. Both can be used every day for the rest of your life in an attempt to keep your skin looking its age or younger. Essential fatty acids found in foods like sunflower oil and almonds can help keep skin healthy. Vitamin A and beta-carotene help to relieve dry skin and stop cell damage. Vitamin C repairs connective tissue while vitamin E can reduce scarring and improve dry skin. The B-complex vitamins may also prevent cracks and lines on the skin. Take these vitamins in a multivitamin or in the form of their various food sources. Use jojoba oil on your skin to help improve its quality and condition. Try the herbs marigold, lady's mantle, or witch hazel to tone and refresh the skin in a rinse or sprayed on with an atomizer. You can purchase these oils and herbs at a natural-foods store like Whole Foods.

Alternative Care

There are many other alternative health-care remedies that can help to alleviate or prevent wrinkles. Self-massage on your face can help to nourish and relax facial skin and tissue. You can try lightly patting your face for 15-to-20 seconds a day to accomplish this. Acupressure has been connected to the toning of facial muscles. You can see a specialist or use an acupressure diagram to show you the facial beauty points St 3 at the bottom of each cheekbone below the pupil. Press these three times a day for a minute each. Keep yourself at a proper weight through exercise to prevent sagging skin and to ensure that oxygen flows through your body better. This will also help in preventing stress, which may lead to ugly- looking furrows and ridges. These methods when all combined may keep your wrinkles at bay in a much healthier way than Botox.

How to Increase White Cell Count

How to Increase White Cell Count

White blood cells, also known leukocytes, are necessary because they help fight infection. If there's a low number of white blood cells, it could be due to liver disease, the absence of a spleen, or bone marrow failure. There are several drugs that can be used to raise the number of white blood cells, as well as a number of alternative methods.

Reduce your intake of sugary and fatty foods. Sugar decreases the strength of white blood cells.

Drink eight glasses of water a day. Not only does water flush toxins from the body, it may also help strengthen your immune system.

Exercise three to five times a week. Exercise relieves stress, which hurts your white blood cell count. It also helps to keep you at a healthy weight, which helps the body fight infection.

Incorporate carrots, leafy greens, yogurt and kale into your daily diet. All of these foods contain beta carotene, which increases your number of white blood cells.

Homemade Colema Board

Homemade Colema Board

Colema boards are boards that are used as platforms for individuals who want to perform a colonic enema in the comfort of their homes. The front of the board rests over a bucket or toilet that collects waste. The back of the board is held up by a chair or legs to hold the individual during the enema process.

Board Base

The base of the colema can be constructed out of a variety of rigid materials including metal, plywood, thick plastic or acrylic. This base must be strong enough to support the body weight of the user. Colema boards are slightly wider than the bowl of the toilet and long enough to accommodate the gluteus maximus muscles, torso and head of the user.

Evacuation Area

The evacuation area of the board is the area where bodily fluids are discharged . This area is composed of a hole through one end of the base board that is slightly smaller than the toilet opening. A rounded cover is attached to the front and sides of the hole to prevent bodily fluids from splashing into other areas of the room.

Enema Supplies

The board is used in conjunction with basic enema supplies, including water and tubing. Tubing is guided through the front of the rounded cover through a hole in the material.

How to Get a Physician Medical Massage Referral

Massage has been used for thousands of years to treat and prevent injuries and illnesses. Bas-relief carvings from Ancient Egypt and ancient Chinese texts show how massage was used by ancient cultures. Texts dating back to ancient Greece and the early days of Rome outline the massage methods and techniques used to keep people healthy. Ayurvedic writings also describe in detail how massage kept the body supple and fit. Massage has fallen out of favor in the western world, but it is beginning to make a come-back as more and more people seek out treatments which do not rely on risky and expensive prescription drugs.

Doctors do not often prescribe medical massage, not only because they often do not understand it, but also because there are not many trained, certified medical massage therapists. Fortunately, as more therapists become available, it is becoming easier to get your physician to give you a medical massage referral.

Getting a Physician Referral

Determine whether your injury or illness would benefit from massage therapy. The best way to make this determination is to meet with a licensed massage therapist. Many soft-tissue injuries can benefit from the work of a massage therapist, but most diseases have contraindications which exclude massage as a treatment option. Energy work may prove beneficial in those cases, but the possibility of getting a physician referral for energy work is next to nil, owing to the lack of verifiable research proving the benefits of energy work.

Locate a qualified, trained, and certified licensed massage therapist. The phone book is one option. Your physician or chiropractor may have a preferred massage therapist, or you can search any of the massage organizations such as the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) or the Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals (ABMP). Look for licensure, certification, and additional training in medical massage, injury recovery, or specific conditions. Specific training modalities you would look for may depend on your condition. For example, people with structural alignment issues may seek out Trager or Rolfing bodywork, while the victim of a vehicle accident may get greater benefit from a Swedish massage. The important thing is to seek out the most appropriate modality for your condition.

Discuss with your physician how massage treatment would benefit your specific condition. This may take some convincing on your part, as most physicians believe prescription drugs and physical therapy is all you need to recover from an injury. If you can, meet with the massage therapist ahead of time to discuss your condition and how massage can benefit. Ask for literature, whether in the form of brochures, newsletters, or specific texts, to help support massage as a treatment option.

Involve the massage therapist in the treatment plan. This will require a medical records release form so the therapist can base the treatment on your specific condition. The therapist should meet with your physician to discuss the specifics of your massage treatment. Often, your physician may have specific goals and treatment courses in mind to help with your condition.

Adhere to your physician's and massage therapist's instructions. Your therapist may recommend bathing in epsom salts and essential oils to aid in your recovery, or particular stretching exercises to improve mobility in the injured area.

This not only helps in your recovery, but it demonstrates for the physician how effective massage therapy can be in treating medical conditions, making it easier for the next patient to ask for and receive a referral for medical massage.

Natural Cold Sore Treatments

Natural Cold Sore Treatments

Cold sores are a direct cause of the herpes simplex virus and are highly contagious. They are small, painful, pus-filled blisters that appear on the lips, gums and the roof of the mouth. You may get some pain or tingling a few days before the cold sores appear. There is no cure for the herpes virus that causes cold sores, but you can use natural ways to treat them.

Lysine is used to make protein we need to produce infection-fighting antibodies. We get lysine through natural supplements and foods we eat because it is an amino acid. Lysine is good at decreasing the effects of the herpes virus. We get lysine through foods we eat such as red meat, milk, eggs, cheese, wheat germ, fish and brewers' yeast. Lysine competes with another amino acid called arginine. The less arginine we have, the more lysine we have in our bodies. Lysine supplements taken three times a day may help shorten the duration of cold sores.

Lemon Balm

Lemon balm is also known as Melissa officinalis. It has antiviral properties and is a good natural way to treat cold sores. You can use lemon balm in a cream form to reduce the recurrence of cold sores.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint essential oils have been found to penetrate the skin and have a direct effect against the herpes virus. Peppermint oil has not been scientifically proven to work on everyone to treat cold sores naturally. Until it has been, it should not be used.

Self Heal

Self heal is an herb commonly grown in China and Europe. It is also known as Prunella vulgaris and is a perennial plant. The extracts of self heal have been known to treat herpes simplex I and herpes simplex II viruses.

Resveratrol is a compound found in red grapes and has been found to be effective against the herpes simplex virus. You can use this natural treatment as a cream to treat cold sores. It has also been found to be effective on animals with the herpes virus. It has been found to be just as effective as Zovirax, a topical cold sore ointment.

Propolis is a natural, brownish, resinous substance. Bees collect it from poplar to keep their hives clean. Propolis is very effective against cold sores. It has been found to prevent the virus from entering the body cells and to block the reproduction and spread of herpes.

What Are the Benefits of Bee Venom?

What Are the Benefits of Bee Venom?

Bee sting therapy, also known as apitherapy, has been used for generations to treat various ailments. In modern times, proponents of bee sting therapy believe the venom can help ailments such as arthritis, gout, fibromyalgia and bursitis.

Bee sting therapy has been used as a healing tool since the second century B.C. in Eastern Asia.

Modern doctors, mostly in Eastern Europe and Korea, still practice bee sting therapy. A patient may be stung up to 80 times in a session, according to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.

Bee venom contains a peptide made up of amino acids, called melittin. This peptide works as an anti-inflammatory and, in theory, prevents pain associated with arthritis.

According to the American Apitherapy Society, bee venom not only reduces inflammation but promotes better circulation and strengthens the immune system.

There have been no human trials to prove the efficacy of apitherapy. However, doctors at the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki in Greece in a 1988 study proved that bee sting venom slowed down the growth of arthritis in rats.

In Philippine cuisine, lemongrass is also use to saute chicken. It works like ginger in adding aroma and flavor to the chicken. Both can also be use together, or lemongrass can be use alone when you run out of ginger.

    Lemongrass as an alternative medicine.

Lemongrass tea can help reduce fever by inducing perspiration, thus, lowers temperature and cools down the body. The tea can also help on treating menstrual cramps.

    Lemongrass as ringworm treatment.

Make a paste of the leaves with buttermilk and apply it to the affected area while lemongrass oil mix with the same amount of coconut oil can help on treating pains, rheumatism, neuralgia and lumbago.

Natural Solutions for Digestive Problems

Indigestion, or dyspepsia, involves a variety of abdominal issues associated with eating. These include heartburn, belching, gas, bloating and hiccups. Poor diet, stress, rushing through meals and lack of exercise can contribute to indigestion. There are many natural treatments that address the above digestive problems.

Treatments for Belching

Chen-pi or bitter orange tea relieves belching, as well as bloating and gas. Steep 1 teaspoon in 1 cup of water and drink as desired. Fennel seed tea also alleviates this problem. Use a tea bag prepared in 1 cup of water. Ginger tea relieves belching as well as stomach irritation. Take 1/3 tablespoon of powdered ginger and add to one cup of water. Peppermint oil offers quick relief. Take 10 to 15 drops in cup of cold water. Other suggestions to stop belching include avoiding chewing gum, smoking, and consuming gas-producing foods and beverages. When experiencing belching, lying on your side or back with your knees to your chest can help release excess air.

Do not use peppermint oil if you have gallbladder disease.

Treatments for Bloating and Flatulence

Angelica, caraway and cinnamon oils all relieve gas and bloating. All call for the same dosage of 10 to 15 drops in cup of water. Taking all three is not necessary as they all have the same effect; one is sufficient. Dandelion tincture stops feelings of fullness and gas. Take teaspoon in cup of water. Horehound and Chen-pi tea are also useful. Both are prepared by steeping 1 teaspoon of the herb in 1 cup of hot water. Again, taking both is not necessary.

Do not use dandelion if you have gallstones. Avoid fennel if you have an estrogen-dependent disorder such as breast cancer, endometriosis or fibrocystic breasts.

Treatments for Heartburn

Coptis or goldenseal relieves heartburn. Take 15 to 20 drops of tincture in cup of water. Do not take for longer than two weeks. Both have the same effect so there is no need to take both. Tumeric powder relieves stomach irritation that can lead to heartburn. Take 1 teaspoon in 1 cup of cold water. Avoid spicy food and citrus juices, and don't eat cold foods after a hot meal. Avoid smoking, alcohol and gum. Use alternative pain relievers other than aspirin.

Do not use coptis or goldenseal if you are pregnant or have gallstones. Also avoid goldenseal if you have cardiovascular disease or glaucoma.

Treatments for Hiccups

Galangal tea and ginger tea curb inflammation that causes hiccups and they relieve incomplete digestion. Both teas are prepared by adding teaspoon to hot water. You can drink as desired.

A Massage to Relieve Sinus Pressure

There are a few massage techniques that can bring relief from sinus pressure. A reflexology massage is often quick and easy. There are five acupressure points on the face you can work by yourself, or with a manual sinus drain technique. Any of these three can be effective in getting the results you desire.

Reflexology for Sinus Pressure

There's a chart in the Resources section that will show you the two points on four toes of the foot to work on. You will want to work both feet. When working these points, you want to use your thumb and index finger and squeeze from the top of the nail and bottom of the toe for 15 to 20 seconds on each point. You can rub in a circular motion to stimulate the area further. There's also a hand chart you can reference, so the fingers can be worked in the same way.

Massage Sinus Release

Place your index fingers on the sides of your nose at the bridge by the corner of your eye, and press them in toward each other for 10 to 20 seconds. These points should be tender to the touch, so be gentle. As you apply pressure, the pain should ease. Follow the eye socket bone pressing your fingers down under the bone gently until you reach the outer corners of the eye.

Place your fingertips on either side of each nostril. Press into the skin and hold. Slowly move outward with a gliding stroke and follow the cheekbones up to the temples on your forehead. Once at the temples, find the sorest spot and rub in a circular motion.

Acupressure Point Massage

Acupressure points are used to relieve sinus pressure quickly and easily. A tenderness should be felt when you find each correct point.

The next starting point is in the middle of the eyebrow. Hold the most sensitive points on both brows for 10 to 20 seconds with a pressure just deep enough not to cause discomfort.

The second points are directly under the pupil on the eye socket bones. Hold both points for 10 to 20 seconds with similar pressure.

The third point is in the middle of the nose at the brow line or the third eye point. Hold it for 10 to 20 seconds with moderate pressure.

Ringworm Home Treatments

Ringworm is not actually caused by a worm. It is a skin rash that forms a red ring that affects the skin on the body, scalp and nails. Ringworm is caused by a fungal infection and can be very contagious. Home remedies can be effective for treating ringworm, but it is important that a diagnosis of the skin condition be made first to rule out other fungal infections.

The skin rash that is caused by ringworm must be officially diagnosed before an effective treatment can begin. Ringworm is caused by a fungal infection and must be treated with home remedies that will eliminate fungus. A skin infection that is caused by bacteria must be treated with a different set of home remedies. Ringworm causes a red, scaly rash that forms in the shape of a ring. The rash can be itchy as well.

A fungal infection of the skin is usually not a life-threatening condition, but a bacterial infection of the skin can be in some rare cases. This is why it is important that you have skin infections diagnosed by a medical professional. When a skin rash does not clear up with home remedies within two weeks, it is time to get an official diagnosis from the doctor.

Home Remedies

There are a number of home remedies that can be used to treat ringworm. Mustard seed is an effective treatment when it is made into a paste and applied directly to the rash. Other ingredients commonly used to treat a ringworm rash are papaya applied to the rash twice a day, coconut oil, butea seeds ground into a paste and turmeric. Apply these ingredients directly to the ringworm rash for relief from itching and to clear up the rash.

Applying bleach to the rash can also kill the fungus that causes ringworm. Apply the bleach with a cotton ball or swab once or twice a day. This treatment can cure or eliminate ringworm within just a few days. Use a clean and new cotton swab each time the bleach is applied to the rash. Dilute the bleach with water if desired.

Medical Attention

Ringworm that becomes severe and spreads to larger areas of the body might need a stronger prescription medication from the doctor. Home remedies should be able to clear up ringworm in a couple of weeks. When the rash has not cleared up or the home remedies that you are using are not relieving the itch that accompanies ringworm, a visit to the doctor is recommended.

Natural Ways to Cure Alcohol Addiction

Alcoholism is characterized by the daily consumption of alcohol to escape the mental and physical symptoms of withdrawal. This condition usually develops over time as the alcohol reduces the amounts of certain chemicals in your brain, particularly the ones that control impulses and produce feelings of pleasure. Natural treatments are best used as a complement to counseling and standard medications.

Herbal Treatments

Always consult your doctor before taking these or any other supplements.

The herb kudzu discourages alcohol consumption by creating nausea, swelling and facial redness when taken before drinking. Take 10 mg three times a day. Milk thistle, a well-studied herb for liver disorders, prevents and treats cirrhosis and other liver conditions. Take 600 mg daily. Milk thistle can cause mild diarrhea when first taken. Reishi prevents fatty liver and cirrhosis. Take 3,000 mg three times daily. Soy lecithin encourages liver-cell regeneration and protects it from toxins. Take 3,000 mg daily. Dandelion is commonly used for liver disorders because of its detoxifying properties. It can also help with withdrawal symptoms. Take the tincture as directed on the label.

Homepathic Remedies

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, there have not been many studies on how homeopathic remedies treat alcoholism. However, the following treatments are commonly used by homeopaths based on their clinical experience. Homeopathy, like traditional Chinese medicine, often looks at particular symptoms in addition to the main condition when suggesting treatments. These remedies should be taken as directed on the product label.

Arsenicum album eases anxiety and compulsiveness. It is most useful if you are experiencing nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Nux vomica reduces irritability and compulsiveness accompanied by constipation, nausea and vomiting. Lachesis lessens cravings for alcohol, headaches and trouble swallowing. Staphysagria is used to treat angry individuals who bottle up their emotions and have suffered physical, sexual or psychological abuse in the past.

Other Suggestions

The University of Maryland Medical Center reviewed several studies that examined acupuncture as a treatment for alcoholism, and found some studies that concluded it could be an effective method for reducing cravings and easing symptoms of withdrawal. This should be used in conjunction with other treatments and not on its own. A study led by W.E. Sevrus, published in the April 1999 Archives of General Psychiatry, found that taking omega-3 fatty acids eased depression. These fatty acids can be found in black currant oil, evening primrose oil, flaxseed oil and fish oil. Take as directed on the product label.

How to Use Alternative Treatments for Alcoholism

Of all the social addiction-based conditions, alcoholism is considered one of the most debilitating. It causes both physical and psychological dependence which, in many cases, attach a hold on your life to a drastic measure. In fact, you can become so dependent upon alcohol that you cannot face life without it. Dependence on alcohol is one of the most difficult addictions to eradicate and rid yourself of because the product is so readily available. There are treatment centers that work primarily on abstinence and how to deal with situations that may bring you back to the addiction as well as 9-step programs that deal with a more mental and emotional approach. However, there are additional alternative treatments that can aid in ridding yourself of alcoholism alongside these treatments.

Take supplements to decrease the craving for alcohol during the weaning process as well as after. He is most likely depleted of certain nutrients that drinking has leached from his body. When the body is lacking nutrients it can feel a craving that can be mistaken for alcohol craving in someone afflicted. Some of the low nutrient levels often found in those with this ailment are B complex vitamins, vitamin C and amino acids. The depletion of amino acids are a direct result of low levels of protein often found in alcoholics. Therefore, adding lean, low fat protein to the diet will be of benefit also.

Add herbs and minerals to your daily schedule. Years of drinking alcohol can put a huge toll on the liver. In fact, liver damage is one of the biggest health risks to alcoholics. The herb, Milk Thistle has been shown to restore and strengthen liver function. Chromium is an essential mineral that can help alleviate fatigue that is often suffered by those with this disease. Evening Primrose Oil contains the fatty acid GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) which is a precursor to the brain chemical prostaglandin. This natural chemical fights the effects of alcoholic withdrawal.

Make an appointment with an acupuncturist. Testimonials from alcoholics have shown marked benefits in relief of cravings as well side effects of such things as pain relief from arthritis. Acupuncture treatments have helped with other alcohol related symptoms such as foggy thinking, over emotional responses, memory problems and managing stress. This might be a good choice in conjunction with a traditional treatment program.

Meditate in order to defeat alcoholism. Another complimentary alternative treatment to traditional addiction treatment programs is meditation. Studies have shone its benefit in reducing stress, improving memory and acts as a substitute to the act of drinking alcohol. An easy and effective meditation technique is the Here and Now Meditation. Find a location in which you will be comfortable and unbothered. Close your eyes and relax your body with deep breaths and conscious letting go of muscular tension. Say and do these things to yourself, letting all other concerns and thoughts slip away: I exist here and now, feel and be conscious of the things going on around you (the temperature, the air current,, your heart pumping), I do everything in my life consciously. Complete the meditation with three deep breaths.

Stretch and balance while doing yoga. Add a yoga regimen to your conventional alcohol treatment program. Yoga is not only an exercise program that helps you maintain a balanced and limber body, it also teaches a sense of oneness by way of connecting with God. The yoga belief is that any happiness that appears to come from anything other than the self and within is fleeting at best. True balance and enlightenment comes from within.

How to Treat de Quervain's Tendonitis

De Quervain's tendonitis is a condition where the sheath, or lining, of the tendon in the wrist becomes swollen and restricts the movement of the tendon. It affects the tendon on the thumb area of your hand. If you are suffering from it, you will experience pain and discomfort in your thumb and wrist. It is made worse by repetitive motions that involve moving your wrist side to side or making a pinching motion with your thumb. Typing, playing the piano and gardening are often culprits in bringing on de Quervain's tendonitis.

Use a splint or a brace to immobilize your thumb and wrist. Keep them straight to allow the tendon to rest. Wear the brace when typing or doing repetitive motion activities.

Avoid movements that are repetitive altogether, when possible. Allow time for your hand to rest between actions.

Avoid moving your thumb in a pinching motion. Use the other hand when possible. Avoid crossing your thumb across your palm.

Avoid side-to-side motions with your wrist. Pick your hand up when reaching for keys on the keyboard, instead of turning your wrist.

Alternate heating pads and ice treatments on your thumb and wrist. Apply one treatment every two hours.

Take anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce swelling and relieve minor pain. Make sure your over-the-counter pain reliever is non-steroidal.

Speak to your health care provider about corticosteroid injections to relieve swelling.

Attend all physical or occupational therapy appointments and follow up with all prescribed strengthening exercises. Do not skip exercises as these are designed to relieve pain, strengthen the muscles, and decrease any irritation to the tendons.

How to Treat Pneumonia with Natural Remedies

How to Treat Pneumonia with Natural Remedies

Pneumonia is inflammation of the lung that is typically caused by infection--bacterial, viral or fungal. The most common form of the disease is largely bacterial in nature, although pneumonia is sometimes caused by a virus (viral pneumonia). Symptoms include inflamed and painful lungs and chest, breathing difficulties, severe cold and flu-like symptoms, swollen glands, fever and significant-to-severe mucous build-up. The disease can last for as little as 1 month and progress for as long a year or more. Pneumonia is commonly treated with antibiotics, but in some cases, mainly viral, the disease can fail to respond to antibiotic treatment. There are several natural and herbal remedies available to treat pneumonia. A 3-month treatment program is recommended. Read more for help.

Diet and Nutrition

Remove excessive amounts of animal protein from your diet. During a bout with pneumonia, it is important to get as much protein from vegetable sources as possible. Excessive amounts of animal protein can be hard on your digestive system, especially if you are sick. When you are ill, it is important to keep yourself regular and allow whole foods to work quickly so your body can absorb their nutrients and fight the infection. A healthy amount of protein can be found in vegetables such as beets, artichokes, spinach, cauliflower, peas, eggplant and potatoes.

Mince 4 to 6 garlic gloves and 1/2 onion. Add 8 to 10 oz. of water and 2 tsp. of honey. Blend well and drink 30 minutes before you eat your first meal. This mixture will help open your bronchial passages so you can stay comfortable during the day. Drink this mixture throughout the day if you feel unusually congested.

Drink a 12 to 14 oz. glass of cranberry/apple juice with breakfast. This will add antioxidants to your system. Do not eat any solid foods for breakfast, except for a small bowl of yogurt or kefir.

Drink a potassium broth with lunch. Making a potassium broth is simple. It can be done by juicing 2 large carrots, 2 stalks of celery, 4 cloves of garlic, 2 radishes and a few pinches of parsley. If you don't have a juicer, drink 10 to 12 oz. of low-sodium vegetable juice. V-8 Juice is among the top brands. It is important to get as much potassium as possible during a bout with pneumonia. Potassium helps repair damaged tissue in the lungs. Do not drink a potassium broth if you have heart disease; potassium helps to regulate your heart function and too much can be dangerous. How to Use Chelation Therapy for Atherosclerosis

The American Medical Association does not endorse chelation therapy. However, results from around the world suggest that the procedure may provide some benefits. The treatment course for atherosclerosis is long, and the patient must incorporate changes into his lifestyle to reduce the risk of the condition recurring.

Discuss chelation therapy with your doctor. Ask him whether the therapy and lifestyle changes will reduce your chances of further developing the condition.

Start chelation therapy. Establish a baseline to compare your condition before and after treatment. Knowing what effect the treatment has on your condition is motivation and encouragement to continue on both the lifestyle changes and to keep up on the maintenance dosages of the chelating agent.

Change your lifestyle. You know what areas you need to change to accomplish lasting results. Eating, stress, exercise, smoking and drinking all play their role in the development of the condition. Eating is more involved than just not eating fast foods and trying to eat healthier. You need to change the items on your normal food list. You need to reduce your cholesterol. Altering the composition of your meals and adopting other healthier fare is advisable. These changes will not occur overnight, but with hard work you should be able to make substantial change during the course of treatment. Typical treatment courses last approximately 20 sessions in the doctor's office and for home programs the time will vary.

How to Treat Spider Veins with Alternative Medicine

Spider veins may affect as many as 75 percent of people over the age of 65. They are more common in women. Home remedies offer an alternative treatment to conventional medicine; they can help to diminish the look of spider veins, along with easing some of the discomfort that may accompany them.

One of the most effective home remedies for spider veins is horse chestnut seed. This herb may provide relief from the swelling, pain and fatigue that tends to go along with spider veins. Horse chestnut has the ability to improve blood circulation in the legs while minimizing inflammation. It also helps to make veins stronger. To use horse chestnut, combine 10 parts of distilled witch hazel with one part of horse chestnut tincture, and apply daily to the affected spider vein area on the body. Repeat daily until you feel relief. In addition, you may also take 500 mg of horse chestnut tincture three times a day for three months. Mix into 8 oz. of water or tea to make it more palatable.

Horse chestnut contains a component called aescin, which helps to strengthen capillaries. You will want to use horse chestnut extract that contains at least 50 mg of aescin for it to be effective.

Bilberry extract helps with strengthening capillaries and promotes the effects of vitamin C in its ability to lessen blood vessel frailty. An optimal dose of bilberry is 20 to 40 mg three times per day.

Butcher's broom also helps to strengthen veins. Use 300 mg three times a day for results.

Hawthorn extract is useful in treating spider veins because it contains vitamin C, zinc and sulfur along with biovflavonoids, all of these being helpful in treating problem veins. A recommended dosage is 200 mg three times a day.

Distilled witch hazel is a soothing remedy that can easily be done at home. Saturate a cotton ball with witch hazel and apply to areas affected by spider veins. Along with relieving pain, witch hazel may help to strengthen blood vessels.

It is important to consider the use of vitamins when treating spider veins with home remedies. Make sure to include vitamin C and vitamin E to improve circulation and reduce pain levels. Vitamin E may also have the ability to act as a blood thinner, which will then help circulation. A recommended dose of vitamin C is 1,000 mg a day, and 200 i.u. of vitamin E a day.

Vitamin B also plays a role in providing a feeling of well being and health, which will benefit anyone affected by spider veins. Take a vitamin B complex supplement for optimal results.

Home Remedies for Inner Ear Infections

Ear infections are very common, especially among children under the age of 5, and can be bothersome and painful. Most cases will clear up on their own after a few days, so patience is key. There are some treatments for ear infections that will help prevent or heal them faster. Here are some home remedies that can successfully treat an ear infection.

Homemade Ear Drops

There are several ear drops that are made naturally that have been found effective in treating an ear infection. For remedies from your local grocery store, try putting a small amount of olive oil onto a warm spoon and then apply two to three drops into the infected ear. You also can try applying a few drops of garlic juice into the infected ear. (Note: Garlic juice often is purchased from the spice aisle of the grocery store.)

If you prefer natural or herbal remedies, there also are other options. Lobelia extract can be purchased from your local natural foods store. Put a few drops into your inner ear then gently rub it. Mango leaf juice (an ayurvedic remedy) should be warmed first, and then 1 tsp. is applied, one drop at a time, into the inner ear.

Vitamins, Minerals and Eating Habits

Taking vitamin C is a great way to boost your immune system and help to fight off infections when you're under the weather. Consider increasing your zinc intake to assist in reducing the infection. If consuming either of these as supplements, be sure to follow the manufacturer's dosage instructions, particularly in children as dosages are based on age and weight.

Eating diets high in calcium also can be beneficial. Stay away from foods that are highly processed or contain hydrogenated oils. If the patient is a baby who is still breastfeeding, continue to breastfeed, as this is a great way to build up your baby's defenses against illness.

Other At-Home Remedies

Many patients have found that applying a warm, damp cloth to the ear can help to provide some much-needed relief for the pain associated with ear infections.

Another helpful hint is to find something to distract you from the pain. Read a good book or watch a well-loved movie. Play a game or spend time talking to friends and family. This will make the time go by faster as you're on the road to recovery.

Medicinal Use of Bee Balm

Medicinal Use of Bee Balm

Bee balm (Monarda sp.) grows as a native Eastern American perennial distinguished by its bright, beautiful flowers. First used by Native Americans, bee balm has since become a popular beverage for both its taste and medicinal use. Bees favor this herb, lending to its common name of bee balm and making it a popular garden flower. It offers relief for a variety of ills from the common cold to insomnia, as well as providing culinary and craft material.

Plant Description

Bee balm grows 2 to 5 feet tall, producing flowers on branching, square stems. On the stems, pale green opposite leaves unfurl, toothed and lance shaped. Fine hairs covering both stem and leaves give bee balm a texture that is rough to the touch. The fragrant flowers bloom in a variety of colors ranging from red (Monarda didyma) to pink (Monarda fistulosa). The unique whorl-like flowers bloom from June to September.

The Oswego Indians first made tea from the dried leaves of bee balm, specifically Monarda didyma, giving it the nickname of Oswego tea. The Indians later shared it with the settlers in the New York area, which then became popular in the mid 1700s as a tea substitute. The fragrance of bee balm resembles that of Citrus bergamia, which gave bee balm the name of "bergamot."

Medical Properties

Alternative medicine utilizes the antiseptic, diuretic and stimulant properties of bee balm. It has carminative (relieving flatulence) and diaphoretic (sweat inducing) qualities, according to Alternative Nature. Practitioners also use antiseptic thymol oil, which is derived from bee balm.

Traditional Uses

Usually drank as a tonic or tea, the Native Americans used bee balm and other Monarda relatives to relieve fevers and headaches. Other uses for the tea include consumption as an appetite suppressant as well as a menstrual regulator. Traditionally, brides and mothers in the 19th century drank bee balm tonic.

How to Treat Hypothyroidism Through Diet

Hypothyroidism is caused by the insufficient production of thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland and affects about 3 out of every 100 people in America. Though there are no magical cures for Hypothyroidism, making changes to the diet is one of the easiest ways to help improve the condition naturally.

Eat lots of sea vegetables like kelp, nori, dulse, kombu and wakame. Sea vegetables are high in iodine which is commonly low in most patients with Hypothyroidism. Many types of fish, as well as sea salt, are also high in iodone.

Increase your intake of fatty acids with foods like flaxseeds, walnuts and cold water fish. Fatty acids are essential for healthy thyroid function.

Avoids vegetables that are goitrogens, which can suppress healthy thyroid function. These vegetables include kale, broccoli, cauliflower, soy, cabbage and brussels sprouts.

Avoid tap water, which is full of fluorine and chlorine. Both these chemicals can inhibit your bodies ability to absorb iodine.

What Are the Benefits of HGH on Adrenal Fatigue?

What Are the Benefits of HGH on Adrenal Fatigue?

Stressful situations can trigger the body's internal alarm system. Messages are sent from the brain to the adrenal glands directing them to release cortisol as a defense mechanism. But while it is a temporary necessity to thwart danger, the continuous production of cortisol and other hormones causes the adrenals to become fatigued and can impair their ability to function correctly.

Adrenal Fatigue

Adrenal fatigue is the term used to explain the symptoms and conditions that occur throughout the body as the result of inadequately performing adrenal glands. Since the adrenals are the epicenter for the metabolism of nutrients, fluids, electrolytes and the functioning of the cardiovascular system, the body overcompensates to try to counteract these effects. Symptoms vary but typically there is an overall feeling of fatigue and lack of energy. Many sufferers turn to stimulants such as caffeine. According to Dr. Michael Galitzer, a physician who specializes in bio identical hormone replacement therapy and anti-aging medicine, "When people are under enormous and prolonged stress, they will experience adrenal fatigue."

Adrenal Function

The adrenals are two walnut-sized glands that sit above the kidneys. Their primary function is to prepare the body for "fight or flight" when faced with threatening or stressful circumstances. The adrenals release a multitude of hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol, which are meant to assist the body in overcoming the stress. The heart rate speeds up as blood and oxygen are shuttled to the muscles in preparation for action. Once the stress has been avoided and/or eliminated, messages are sent to the adrenals to release another round of hormones that counteract the adrenaline and cortisol and calm everything down.

Cortisol and HGH

Cortisol is a steroid hormone, which regulates blood sugar and determines the nutrient (fat, protein or carbohydrate) that will be utilized for energy during times of stress. However, this process is only meant to last for short periods. When the stress is continuous, the adrenal glands are forced to continually pump cortisol, which can be harmful. The presence of cortisol can create, imbalances in other hormones, such as DHEA and HGH. Human growth hormone (HGH) is produced by the pituitary gland and is responsible for tissue growth, which leads to increased, muscle mass and energy. It is also helpful in weight control and slowing down the effects of aging.

HGH Supplements

Age, stress and other factors lead to a decrease of the body's natural human growth hormone (HGH) production. Individuals who do not naturally produce enough HGH may be prescribed HGH supplements by a doctor. HGH supplements are believed to reverse the signs of aging, enhance muscle mass, increase energy and promote weight loss. One of the symptoms of adrenal fatigue is weight gain. High levels of cortisol present in the body for extended periods of time can affect the thyroid gland and slow the metabolism. According to Dr. James L. Wilson, Ph.D., author of Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Syndrome, "As the 'glands of stress,' the adrenals play a key role in modulating the effects of stress on the body. Taking steps to properly support and promote optimal adrenal health and function is an essential aspect of any anti-aging program."

Some of the risks associated with HGH supplements are headaches, muscle pain, inflammation, arthritis and the growth of bones and organs. According to the National Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases Information Service, those taking HGH supplements may be at risk for adrenal crisis. Adrenal crisis occurs when the adrenal or pituitary gland is damaged, and it can be deadly. HGH is not believed to cause adrenal crisis, but people who do not make enough human growth hormone also do not make enough of the hormones vital for proper functioning. If a person is only being supplemented for low levels of human growth hormone, they may not even be aware that they are lacking other hormones such as cortisol. It is the low levels of these hormones that can lead to adrenal crisis. It is illegal to use HGH supplements as an athletic-performance enhancer.

Benefits of Neem Tea

The herb neem has been used in ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years to treat a wide range of ailments due to its extensive healing properties; there are 150 active substances in neem. It is non-toxic to humans, but highly toxic to insects, making it an ideal insecticide. To be sure, the taste of neem tea is an acquired one, but for many, the antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic, anti-protozoan and antiviral properties make the adjustment worthwhile.

Antibacterial Uses

Neem is used to treat bad breath and gum disease and to prevent cavities. It is used as an ingredient in a variety of oral care products sold worldwide. In India, people chew on neem twigs. According to a study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology in 2004, drinking neem tea and brushing your teeth with neem gel has been shown to reduce the prevalence of bacterial growth in the mouth by up to 50 percent.

Antifungal Uses

In the treatment of fungal infections, neem is most effective when used both internally as a tea and externally as a cream. Together, these two forms of neem kill the fungus that causes yeast infections, jock itch, thrush and ringworm.

Anti-parastic Uses

Neem contains hormones that disrupt the feeding and reproducive patterns of body lice. Instead of drinking neem tea, to combat parasites it is more effective to bathe in it. It will soothe the skin by promoting the healing of open wounds and acting as an antiseptic while killing the parasites.

Anti-protozoan Uses

Neem tea is an effective tonic for both indigestion and constipation because of the content of tict rasa. This also makes neem an effective de-worming compound. Neem aids in reducing swelling of the stomach and intestinal tract. In fact, neem is effective at reducing swelling and inflammation in all regions of the body.

Antiviral Uses

Neem tea, when used in combination with neem cream, speeds up the healing time and pain associated with herpes simplex 1, herpes zoster and warts. The Malaria Research Center in Jabalpur, India, mixed neem with coconut oil extract and applied it to the skin of human subjects. They found an 81 to 91 percent rate of effectiveness against mosquitoes over a period of 12 hours; neem is used to prevent malaria in certain regions of the world. Neem is used as a blood purifier due to its ability to remove toxins from the blood and thereby increase liver function.

Contraceptive Uses

Since ancient times, neem has been thought to possess spermicidal properties both pre- and post-intercourse. Charaka, an Indian doctor practicing in the first century B.C., recommended that a cloth soaked in neem oil be placed in the vagina for 15 minutes prior to sex to kill sperm. Modern research suggests that neem does indeed kill sperm within seconds after contact and that the protection lasts for five hours. The downside is that it has a very pungent odor. More research is needed before neem can be considered a safe and effective means of contraception.

Natural Way to Lighten Dark Pigmentation

Natural Way to Lighten Dark Pigmentation

For many, keeping skin light is akin to staying beautiful. Numerous skin care and beauty products for skin whitening use harsh bleaches and chemicals. Luckily, whether you're looking to change your natural complexion or to reverse unwanted age spots, there are simple, safe and natural ways to go about it.

    Loofahs help with exfoliation

One of the most effective natural treatments is one of the simplest. Scrubbing skin to remove excess dead cells also has the effect of naturally lightening it. Regular buffing and exfoliation maintains smoother, lighter skin.

A loofah or some form of natural scrubbing device can help as can numerous beauty products designed to exfoliate-- including ones that use mild natural acids.

But for a completely natural, homemade exfoliation, mix 2 tablespoons oatmeal, 2 tablespoons brown sugar and 1/4 cup milk until it becomes a paste. Apply to skin, scrub rigorously, and rinse.

Home Treatments

Homemade facial masks can lighten skin

There are a few natural treatments you can make at home. Try a skin-lightening facial mask. Mix in equal parts sandalwood paste, lemon juice, tomato juice and cucumber juice to form a paste. Apply the mixture to face and any other skin desired. Wear the mixture until it dries, then rinse.

Another option is to apply licorice extract. Licorice contains a natural skin-whitening agent called glabridin. Most natural food and supplement stores will have licorice extract, and it may also be ordered online. Be sure to test for allergic reactions before applying to your face and larger areas of skin. Usually a small amount on the back of your hand is a good choice.

Natural Products

Nut grass root yields skin-whitening extracts

Some natural solutions can be bought ready to use. Nut grass root extract naturally reduces the production of melanin. Melanin is the chemical in our bodies which causes pigmentation. Thus, this extract can help to lighten skin--some suggest by as much as 40 percent. Look for products containing nut grass root. The most notable of these is called Extrapone, which along with nut grass root contains several other natural extracts aimed at healthy skin treatment.

Keratin, in significant enough concentration, may also have a lightening effect on the skin. This natural compound which encourages skin to produce collagen and elastin is found in many common hand and body lotions. One New Zealand-made product, Cynergy TK, claims to use very high concentrations of keratin along with other natural ingredients specifically to create a skin-lightening effect. This product is not widely distributed in the United States and usually requires a specialty beauty or skin product shop to locate it.
