What Are the Benefits of Taking CoQ10 for Hypertension?

What Are the Benefits of Taking CoQ10 for Hypertension?

CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10) is a very important part of the group of cells in the body that create energy and are known as mitochondria. The development of ATP is what CoQ10 is involved in. ATP is the energy medium of all bodily functions. Our bodies cannot survive without CoQ10; it is akin to a spark plug in a car's engine. Sometimes, CoQ10 is not developed in healthy amounts in the body which can cause medical complications for the heart. Reasons for low levels of CoQ10 in the body are lack of proper nutrition, defects due to genes or bodily tissues having more needs. Heart disease which includes hypertension (high blood pressure) is an example of tissue needs where more CoQ10 is needed.

CoQ10 Hypertension Studies

According to Dr. HingHau Tsang of Tsangenterprise.com, a research study in which 83 people of both genders and sufferers of systolic hypertension were conducted. These subjects were in a controlled, random and double blind study for duration of 12 weeks. Half of the participants took 50 mg of CoQ10 twice a day. CoQ10 lowered systolic hypertension by 18 mm Hg (millimeters of mercury), according to the outcome of the study. This result rivals blood pressure drugs, lacking negative side effects. Other studies, which were crossover, randomized and open label, found that systolic blood pressure lowered by 11-17 mm Hg, and diastolic pressure lowered by 8-10 mm Hg. Half of the subjects were able to stop using in the least one type of hypertension medication in three out of 12 studies.

CoQ10 Hypertension Benefits

According to Michael T. Murray, N.D, low levels of CoQ10 have been found in 39 percent of patients suffering with hypertension. Based on these results, it may seem as if the solution lies in an increase of CoQ10 supplements. The intake of CoQ10 provides medical benefits beyond just the correction of a deficiency. CoQ10 is instrumental in improving hypertension by lowering high blood pressure levels in patients, though the effects do not appear in patients after 4-12 weeks of CoQ10 therapy. This is done by the CoQ10 reducing the resistance to blood flow. An average decrease in hypertension patients in both blood pressure categories are about 10 percent. This is due to CoQ10.

Best Form of CoQ10

The best form of CoQ10 to ingest is the oil version that is found in soft gel containers. These capsules work best when ingested in conjunction with food products. CoQ10 enhanced with vitamin E increases its absorption properties. In addition, this form of CoQ10 will most likely stay in its active structure. CoQ10 is inactive and active in the blood system. If there are low levels of vitamin E in the body in the body, CoQ10 is transformed into its inactive structure. CoQ10 function is increased when there are high levels of vitamin E in the body. Vitamin E behavior is increased by the presence of CoQ10 in the body as well.

CoQ10 Dosage

The average dose of CoQ10 that is advisable is 50-150 milligrams a day, for effectiveness. But there are some things to consider when trying to figure out the best daily intake amount of CoQ10. A question to ponder is whether CoQ10 blood levels will increase beyond 2.5 micrograms/mL and stay at this level. Utilizing CoQ10 that is not absorbed well will not give this effective blood level as the normal blood standard for CoQ10 is 1 micrograms/mL.

Foods with CoQ10

Foods do not contain high amounts of CoQ10. Nutritional sources only provide about 3-5 milligrams a day of C0Q10. This amount of CoQ10 intake is not enough to make a significant impact health wise on the blood and tissue in the body. What these amounts lack is made up is the regular intake of CoQ10 supplements. Foods that are known to contain CoQ10 are meats, poultry and seafood.

Edgar Cayce Bunions Treatment

Edgar Cayce was well-known for his unusual and effective advice. Bunions can be effectively treated through a method derived from his teachings.

What is a Bunion?

A bunion is a swelling of the big toe caused by a structural deformity in the joint and bones of the big toe. It's usually quite painful.

Castor Oil

Edgar Cayce often recommended castor oil as a treatment for most problems. Using it for a bunion came about when a woman tried it after successfully curing her daughter's nail by using Cayce's method.

How to Apply

Rub the big toe with castor oil three times daily. During the night, place a towel or wrap over it to allow the oil to soak. Do this until the swelling is gone.

Efficacy

Though this method has many successfully stories attached to it, not all remedies may work all of the time. It's important to stop if you notice any unusual growth or coloration.

Warning

Stop this method if you notice a black tinge appearing on your big toe. No one understands why this appears there; however, it often appears in chronically ill individuals.

How to Heal With Coconut Oil

How to Heal With Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a tropical vegetable oil derived from the dried fruit of the coconut palm tree. In traditional medicine, coconut oil is used internally and externally to treat a wide variety of ailments including coughs, colds, weight gain, hypotension, nausea and tumors. While modern medical science fails to support many of these claims, clinical evidence suggests coconut oil possess healing, antibacterial and moisturizing properties when applied topically.

Instructions

    1

Apply coconut oil to superficial cuts and wounds. Coconut oil's ability to promote wound healing is largely based on traditional use and anecdotal evidence. However, according to Skin Pharmacology and Physiology 2010 study, virgin coconut oil significantly reduces the healing time of excision wounds in young rats. Tests showed that virgin coconut oil increases collagen production and antioxidant levels to promote faster healing.

    2

Massage coconut oil into skin to relieve dry skin conditions. Topical applications of coconut oil improves skin hydration and increases skin surface lipid levels, thus improving skin barrier function. Virgin coconut oil is an effective treatment for mild to moderate xerosis (dry skin), according to a 2004 study published in the official journal of the American Contact Dermatitis Society.

    3

Use coconut oil to treat skin infections, since it has proven antiseptic properties. Virgin coconut oil successfully reduces the Staphylococcus aureus virus colonization on skin affected by the inflammatory skin disorder atopic dermatitis, according to a 2008 study published in the official journal of the American Contact Dermatitis Society.

Natural Home Remedy to Cleanse and Detox the Colon

The colon is the region of the digestive tract where waste is prepared for removal and is the area most exposed to cancer-causing substances. The typical American diet is low in fiber and high in fat and sugar, which produces free radicals in the body. The good news is that our colons have a biological defense against free radicals: a benevolent bacteria that creates a chemical atmosphere where tumors have a tough time developing. There are also certain things you can do at home to aid in colon health, including cleansing and detoxing with natural remedies.

Cleansing Foods To Eat

According to Bill Gottlieb, author of the book "Alternative Cures: More Than 1,000 of the Most Effective Home Remedies," eating an abundance of foods high in fiber such as vegetables and fruits is necessary to cleanse the colon of toxins. To effectively cleanse, designate one or two days to eating a large variety of fruits and vegetables while abstaining from red meats.

Another food to eat for optimum cleansing and colon health is plain, unflavored yogurt. Gottlieb purports that eating just a half a cup of this yogurt every day will support healthy bacteria in the colon. Look for yogurt with "live" or "active" cultures for absorption of the good bacteria your colon needs.

Using Water and Oil to Cleanse Toxins

When consuming high amounts of fiber, it's important to drink plenty of water as well. Six to eight glasses of water a day is the minimum. Fiber helps you cleanse your colon of toxins because it absorbs water and creates large, soft stools. Andrew Gaeddert, the director of the Get Well Clinic in Oakland, Calif., recommends drinking hot water while cleansing. Hot water stimulates peristalsis, the muscular action-or squeezing-that pushes stool through the digestive tract, releasing unwanted toxins.

Oil is another good way to help cleanse and detox your colon. Oil lubricates your intestines, making it easier for stool to exit your body. Gaeddert recommends putting a tablespoon (or two) of olive or canola oil (or any other monounsaturated or polyunsaturated oil) on green salad. Drink water along with this.

Psyllium and Prune Juice

Psyllium husks are a beneficial supplement if your fiber intake through food is too low. A supplement such as Metamucil is another good way to take in extra fiber. Taking either psyllium husks or a supplement, along with a full glass of water, has about five grams of fiber per dose.

Try prune juice while cleansing. Prune juice contains a compound that helps stimulate bowel movements. According to Gottlieb, drinking two to three 8-ounce glasses of a combination of prune juice and water should be adequate in stimulating disposal.

Natural Cure for Hives

Home remedies for certain conditions are becoming more popular due to the lack of side effects and their potential to keep you out of the doctor's office. Many of these remedies can be made from ingredients such as fruits, vegetables and herbs. There are several over-the-counter methods to help hives.

The Condition

Hives, clinically known as urticaria, is a skin condition that causes welts or red, itchy patches on your skin. Hives can cause difficulty breathing and swallowing.

Determining the Allergen

Ruling out what caused the hives is an effective treatment. Once determined, the best advice is to avoid the allergen. Some common allergens include medication (penicillin, phenobarbital, aspirin), foods (shellfish, chocolate, nuts, berries), insect bites or bee stings, pet dander or pollen.

Cornstarch Bath

Soaking at least once a day in a bath of 1/2 cup cornstarch and 1/2 cup baking soda (in a half-filled tub) can ease the itching.

Cool compression

A washcloth wet with cool water can ease the pain and itching. Or try an ice cube rubbed over the hives. The cold shrinks the blood vessels, which keeps them from releasing too much antihistamine.

Tea

Tea made with red alder leaves and bark can also help. Apply the tea to the area and also drink a couple of tablespoons.

Milk of magnesia

Dabbing milk of magnesia on the hives can provide some itching relief. The milk of magnesia contains an alkaline solution to help remove the itching sensation.

Cayenne Pepper

Taking cayenne pepper capsules can help speed the healing process. Vitamin C, vitamin E and zinc also help.

Natural Home Remedy for a Flat Wart

Flat warts are unsightly and can appear anywhere on the body. Some of the unpleasant side effects of warts are itching, burning and oozing. Warts can also be painful and quite difficult to remove. Generally speaking, a medical doctor is the best choice when it comes to removing warts. If, however, you prefer the alternative route, there are several home remedies that can help in the removal of flat warts.

Options

Different remedies work on different people, so you may have to experiment a little until you find an effective remedy for your situation.

An effective herbal remedy for the removal of warts is gentian violet. Typically available in over-the-counter preparations, gentian violet is a potent virus destroyer. Use according to label instructions.

Garlic is a potent antiviral and can be helpful in removing warts. You can find ready-made garlic oil, apply it to your warts and cover with a bandage. Repeat daily until the wart dissolves. Make your own garlic oil by chopping up a peeled garlic bulb and covering with a teaspoon or two of olive oil. Place this in the refrigerator overnight and strain out the garlic the next day. Swab the oil onto the affected area, cover with a bandage and repeat daily until the wart disappears.

The fresh roots from dandelions can help to remove warts. Rub the sap from a fresh root on the wart twice a day until it goes away. Make sure you don't use dandelion that has been treated with pesticides. This remedy may take several months to work, so be patient.

Another useful remedy for eliminating warts is lemon peel. Before you go to bed, tape a piece of lemon peel to the wart. Repeat until the wart goes away. The white, fleshy part of the lemon peel contains oils with antiseptic properties. Continued application can help to soften and heal a wart.

If you continue to be bothered with flat warts, consult your physician. You may require more conventional treatment. Discontinue use of any natural remedy if your skin becomes irritated.

How to Make an Herbal Scalp Rub to Encourage Hair Growth

How to Make an Herbal Scalp Rub to Encourage Hair Growth

Many people suffer from hair loss due to age, hormones or health disorders. If you're having trouble with hair loss, try this scalp rub to remove buildup, and encourage hair to grow back.

Instructions

    1

Place the nettle leaf, saw palmetto berry, chamomile, aloe, catnip and rosemary into a food processor or coffee grinder and grind into a fine powder. You may need to pulse the grinder, or move the herbs around a few times to get an even powder.

    2

Place a couple tablespoons of olive oil into a ramekin or small bowl. Add in the ground herbs.

    3

Microwave the mix for about 10 seconds, stir well, and microwave for an additional 5 seconds.

    4

Place a towel around your neck and shoulders, and secure with a clip.

    5

Use your fingertips to massage the oil blend into your scalp a bit at a time. Be sure to cover the entire scalp. Coating the hair is not necessary. (If you don't like oil on your fingers, you can wear plastic or latex gloves.)

    6

Once your scalp is covered, wrap a warm towel around your head, or at least put on a shower cap. Allow the oil to stay on for at least 15 to 20 minutes.

    7

Shampoo and condition your hair as usual, but be sure to wash with warm water and rinse with cool water. You may need to shampoo twice to remove all the oil from your hair. Be careful not to scrub your scalp much.

    8

Perform these steps at least twice a month. Once a week is better if you have severe loss, particularly due to DHT build-up. (DHT is the cause of hair loss in those with thyroid disorders, as well as aging men.)

Home Remedy for Itching Powder

Though several over-the-counter anti-itch remedies are widely available at your local drugstore, you might be looking for an easy solution to try at home. Baking soda and oatmeal might give you relief. In addition, aromatherapy might be an easy solution for you, too. It is important, however, to know when your symptoms are severe enough to call your doctor.

Ingredients

To control itching at home, consider using baking soda. You could rub baking soda on the itch, but you might also find relief by putting one-half cup baking soda into a tub full of water. Soak in this remedy for about twenty minutes, once daily until the itch is relieved.

You could also use baking soda to make an anti-itch paste. Mix a spoonful of baking soda with a small amount of water and dab it onto the affected area. Apply as needed.

You might also find relief from oatmeal powder. You could use an over-the- counter oatmeal solution in a warm bath for relief. Such products normally use colloidal oatmeal and won't clog your drain. To make a similar product at home, use a blender or food processor and finely grind old-fashioned rolled oats. Add about a cup of the powdered solution to warm water. For extra relief, you could also add baking soda or even eucalyptus or peppermint essential oils.

Aromatherapy

In addition to anti-itch powder, you could also try aromatherapy to ease your itch symptoms at home. Valerie Ann Worwood, author of "The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy," suggests adding five drops of either eucalyptus or peppermint (or a combination of both) to one teaspoon of a base vegetable oil, such as olive, jojoba or grapeseed oil. Massage the solution onto the affected area as needed. Store the solution in a dark, glass bottle.

Doctor

Contact your doctor if you develop a rash while taking other medications. The "Doctors' Book of Home Remedies for Women" says that sometimes medications can cause allergic reactions that result in itchy rashes.

Also, contact your doctor if, after using home remedies, your rash doesn't clear up after week, the itching is so painful that it keeps you up at night, you develop blisters, you have pus or swelling and/or is accompanied by a fever. Too much itching can cause affected areas to become infected. Look for yellow or white fluid, swelling and warmth in the affected area.

Aromatherapy for Quitting Smoking

Quitting smoking is one of the hardest things to do. Aromatherapy and essential oils can change moods, however, and provide a positive influence when you're trying to stop smoking. There are aromatherapy combinations that can induce a feeling of calm, and help relieve some of the effects of nicotine addiction. When the next craving for a cigarette hits, try the following essential oil recipes.

Reduce the Effects of Nicotine

To reduce the effects of nicotine, try blending essential oils of lavender, marjoram, palmarosa, frankincense, cedarwood, vetiver and geranium. Put 10 drops of each essential oil in an equal part of jojoba oil. This can be diffused throughout a home using a simmering pot, or put some of this blend on a handkerchief, and inhale the aroma when a cigarette craving strikes.

Other Options

Keep individual essential oils such as peppermint, cinnamon or nutmeg handy in small bottles around your home and office, and inhale the aromas when you're tempted to light up.

Pine essential oil mixed with thyme and ylang-ylang essential oils also can curb cravings. Mix 10 drops of each of these oils with a carrier oil such as jojoba oil, and inhale deeply.

Black Pepper

Another aromatherapy option for smoking cessation is black pepper oil. This is a single note oil, and it is quite strong. Try a few drops on a tissue or cotton ball, and inhale as needed.

Relaxing Blend

A relaxing blend of essential oils will ease the stress of quitting smoking for most people. Combine five drops of rosemary, five drops of lemon, three drops of peppermint, three drops of ylang-ylang and one drop of camphor. Diffuse these oils in a simmering pot.

Explore

Try alternating these oil mixtures from day to day. Some essential oils probably will work better for you than others. Experiment to find the best mixture for your needs.

Colostrum Cure for Cancer

Colostrum Cure for Cancer

Colostrum is the first food that a mammal produces for her young before she produces milk. It is filled with immune-boosting properties that protect and strengthen the newborn's health. Beyond being an "immunity milk" for new babies, some consider colostrum to have curative properties for cancer. However, its unconventional discovery and initial unlicensed practice has prevented official government and health recognition of colostrum as a cancer cure.

Colostrum Fights Cancer

Cancer cells randomly exist even within normal healthy people. The difference is that their immunity works well to kill off the cancer cells long before they grow and spread throughout the body.

Colostrum has several potentially beneficial components that specifically combat cancer cells. It has transforming growth factor (TGF) polypeptides. These polypeptides may effectively fight cancer cells due to their restoration and healing properties. Colostrum also contains Lactoferrin, which helps regulate iron metabolism and stop oxidation. Lactoferrin is a milk protein that binds and transports iron throughout the body. It also supports the body's immunity through its inhibition of pathogens and its antiviral and antibacterial characteristics. It stops or kills pathogens by blocking their iron absorption. Its iron-inhibiting activities and its attack on free radicals also prevent the growth or lessen the risk of tumors and cancer.

Colostrum also contains phytic acid and Alpha Lactalbumin. Phytic acid is an antioxidant that also blocks iron from the cancer cells similar to Lactoferrin activities. Alpha Lactalbumin stops cancer cells from growing and it causes them to self-destruct or commit apoptosis.

It is said that those who develop cancer may actually have a compromised immune system that is not able to perform the natural process of killing these harmful cells. The colostrum cure holds promise in helping to restore the immune response against the growth of harmful, cancerous cells so that the body is able to cure itself of its cancer. Cancer is stated to spread in a weak body whose normal defenses are compromised. Colostrum is the first natural milk that a mother produces for her newborn, and cow colostrum is sold commercially in supplement form.

History

Colostrum as a treatment was first discovered and tested by Herb Saunders, a farmer who conducted an experiment with Lyme disease and the colostrum in a pregnant cow's udder. The colostrum responded to the dead Lyme spirochete by developing antibodies to the foreign microorganism. Hence, it is said that it became a medium that produced a Lyme disease antibiotic.

The findings of Herb Saunders--who was later cited for not having a license to practice medicine by both the NIH and the NCI--prompted independent research into was it known as the targeted colostrum method of combating disease. This research has included cancer, arthritis, multiple sclerosis and several microorganisms including the salmonella and pseudomonas strains.

Controversy

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved colostrum treatments for cancer or any other disease. Its effectiveness as a treatment has not been researched and studied by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), nor the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

How to Eat Seaweed to Treat Anemia

How to Eat Seaweed to Treat Anemia

There are many types of anemia and there are many types of seaweed to choose from, all with excellent health benefits. We'll take a look at the types of seaweed available in the U.S. which help those diagnosed with iron-deficiency anemia. We will also look address pernicious anemia.

Instructions

Learning About Seaweed and How it Helps Anemia

    1

Understand What Seaweed is: Seaweed is one of the healthiest vegetables a person can eat. The oceans and seas are filled with nutrients and minerals deposited from land over the period of Earth's history. Since we as humans are a part of our planet, the nutrients found in the oceans, accumulated in plant life such as seaweed, are necessary for health of our bodies, carried throughout the body by way of the blood. Seaweed is known to be many times more nutritious than vegetables grown on land.

    2

Know How Seaweed Helps Anemia: Most people diagnosed with anemia have an iron deficiency, including being deficient in vitamin B-12, also known as pernicious anemia. Seaweed is a natural, non-animal source of vitamin B-12 and is high in iron.. Those who are strict vegetarians (vegans) are more prone to be deficient in B-12 since animal flesh is the common source of this vitamin.

    3
Take Spirulina For Iron and Vitamin B-12

Discover a Few Types of Seaweed that are Best for Anemia: All seaweed contain good amounts of iron, which is needed for most anemics. There are many varieties to choose from.In the U.S. and around the world, the most popular type of seaweed eaten is called, Nori. Nori comes in thin, papery sheets, usually dark green to almost black in color. It originates from Japan and is what one commonly sees sushi, along with rice, rolled up in. It is very mild-tasting with low-sodium.Spirulina has gained popularity in the U,S. over that last couple of decades. Spirulina is a spiral-shaped, blue-green algae found in alkaline lakes world-wide and freeze-dried. In health food stores, it comes in powder form as well as tablets. It is high in protein and contains many minerals and vitamins, including B-12. Spirulina is thought to be the food of the future, since it contains all of the nutrients needed to sustain life. This food has long lists of health benefits, including healing those with anemia.Dulse is a form of seaweed which originates from Ireland and England and is also called, "sea lettuce". It is rich in iron, making it a very good choice for anemic people. Along with vitamins and amino acids, kelp contains just about all of the minerals necessary for human life. It is the largest seaweed (called brown algae) and grows on the ocean floor. Kelp can be found in powder form or in tablets.

    4

Find Places to Buy Seaweed: Many regular grocery stores will have the nori type of seaweed since it's the most popular type. This can be found in the grocery store aisles named, "Ethnic Food" or "Asian Food". Health food stores, such as Whole Foods and Wild Oats will carry seaweed also, usually offering several varieties. Seaweed can purchased on the Internet, through many online health sources.

Ways to Eat or Take Seaweed as a Supplement

    5

Eat nori. This seaweed is more commonly seen in sheet form used when making sushi. Usually, bits of sushi (raw fish), pickled ginger and rice is placed on the sheet and rolled up, similar to making a burrito, for example. It is then sliced horizontally into round pieces which can be dipped into soy sauce or eaten alone. Other foods can also be rolled up in nori sheets--use your imagination. Besides the sheets, nori can also be purchased in shakers so small flakes can be shaken onto food as a seasoning, such as, salads, hot vegetables, sea food, rice, soups and sauces.

    6

Consume spirulina. In powder form, spirulina can easily be added when making smoothies (if you don't mind the green color) and in soups and sauces. I prefer 500 mg tablets in the Earthrise brand. Six tablets per day are recommended and I choose to disperse them throughout the day, usually after my meals. For example, I would take two tablets after each of my three main meals.

    7

Eat dulse. Although low in sodium, dulse has a natural salty taste and is high in flavor, making more it an excellent seasoning for vegetables, meats, sauces and soups. In shaker form it is delicious in popcorn, in place of salt. Kelp can be found in powder form, making it easy to sprinkle on food such as soups, sauces, salads, vegetables or one can take it in tablet form.

    8

Enjoy kelp. This seaweed can be found in powder form, making it a great salt substitute and easy to sprinkle on food such as soups, sauces, salads, vegetables. You can also choose to simply take it in tablet form.

    9

Have Fun Experimenting with Seaweed While Increasing Your Red Blood Cells: Buy nori sheets, take one out and take a bite out of it. Crumble it up. Sprinkle it on your salad or even in a sandwich or an omelet (it's great on eggs!). If you are not used to it, invite seaweed into your meals slowly. Have fun with seaweed. Make a big bowl of popcorn and sprinkle or shake some nori in it or perhaps some dulse (or both). Add it to foods you are already eating--you do not have to know how to create Asian dishes in order to enjoy seaweed. When you discover ways to enjoy seaweed every day, whether it's in the form of tablets like spirulina and kelp or something you can sprinkle, you'll experience an increasing sense of well-being as more healthy red blood cells develop and deliver nutrients and oxygen to every part of your body.

Have Fun Experimenting with Seaweed While Increasing Your Red Blood Cells

    10
Sprinkle Dulce on Food Instead of Salt

Add seaweed graduatlly to your meals. Buy nori sheets, take one out and take a bite out of it. Crumble it up. Sprinkle it on your salad or even in a sandwich or an omelette.Add nori, dulse, kelp or spirulina to your soups and sauces for added flavor. Add a little at a time until you are satisfied with the taste, as you would do adding any new spice. If you are not used to it, always invite seaweed into your meals slowly. Add it to foods you are already eating--you do not have to know how to create Asian dishes in order to enjoy seaweed.

    11

Use seaweed in snacks. Make a big bowl of popcorn and sprinkle or shake some nori in it.. Or you can sprinkle on some dulse (or both) .Add a little spirulina powder to your favorite smoothie. This is another great way to get your seaweed into your body. You won't taste it but you'll notice the green color!

    12

Explore other types of seaweed along the way. There are many other types of seaweed with numerous benefits to your body, including wakame, kombu, arame, sea palm and agar agar. The flavors are delicious and there are many ways to use them, such as thickeners for sauces and soups, in place of meat (as with kombu) and much more. When you discover ways to enjoy seaweed every day, whether it's in the form of tablets like spirulina and kelp or something you can sprinkle, you'll experience an increasing sense of well-being as more healthy red blood cells develop and deliver nutrients and oxygen to every part of your body.

OPC Health

OPC Health

OPC stands for oligomeric proanthocyanidins and is one of the many dietary supplements available. The manufacturers of OPC supplements claim this item helps people with heart disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, high blood pressure and much more. There is, however, a lack of sound evidence to back these claims.

OPC Sources

OPC is not a single chemical, but a group of similar compounds. Food sources of OPC include red wine, cranberries, bilberries, tea (green and black) and parsley. OPC supplements are made from either grape seed extract or pine bark or a combination of both. The OPCs in pine bark, however, are not identical to the ones found in grape seed extract. It is difficult to study OPC supplements because the composition varies from brand to brand.

Antioxidants

OPC supplements receive much acclaim because of their antioxidant content. Antioxidants are compounds that protect cells from free radical damage. Free radicals are compounds released every time cells take up oxygen.

Grape Seed Extract Research

There is limited medical evidence to back the marketing claims. According to the University of Maryland, a study involving healthy volunteers found that taking grape seed extract daily increased levels of antioxidants in their blood. There is, however, no further evidence to prove that this increase of antioxidants prevents cancer or other degenerative diseases such as heart disease.

In the case of swelling that occurs after surgery or injury, grape seed extract does show some promise. One double-blind, placebo-controlled study found breast cancer patients after surgery experienced less swelling than those patients who took the placebo, the University of Maryland Medical Center reports.

In treating high cholesterol, there is no evidence proving that grape seed extract is effective.

The National Cancer Institute did another study and found grape seed extract did not reduce the hardening of breast tissue.

Pine Bark Extract Research

The American Cancer Society states there is not enough data to support most of the health claims for any form of pine bark extract. There have been brief studies that examined how pine bark extract may treat asthma, menstrual pain, blood clots and high cholesterol. Further studies involving larger groups of people are necessary in order to reach any conclusions.

Dietary Supplements

Consumers need to be aware of the difference between dietary supplements and prescription drugs. According to the Food and Drug Administration, a dietary supplement is a product taken by mouth that contains a dietary ingredient. These dietary ingredients include vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids and enzymes. Extracts are also considered dietary ingredients. By law, manufacturers must ensure the safety of their product. Any new or unknown dietary ingredient must be reported to the FDA. Prescription drugs must undergo rigorous testing in order to ensure safety and effectiveness. As long as they can ensure product safety, the makers of dietary supplements do not have to prove to the FDA that the claims made about their products are accurate.

Dr. Kenneth R. Pelletier, author of The Best Alternative Medicine, states that, with a few exceptions, foods, rather than pills, are your best sources of necessary nutrients.

How to Cure Hemorrhoids the Natural Way

How to Cure Hemorrhoids the Natural Way

Hemorrhoids happen when the veins around the anus tend to stretch under pressure and may bulge or swell. These swollen veins develop from an increase in pressure in the lower rectum which can be very uncomfortable. If you are suffering from hemorrhoids, here are few ways you can cure it naturally:

Instructions

    1

Avoid sitting on the toilet for long periods of time. Use the toilet only whenever you feel the urge to have bowel movement. Prolonged sitting on the toilet as well as forcing out the stool causes the hemorrhoids to get worse.

    2

Eat foods high in fiber such as fresh fruits, leafy vegetables, and whole-grain breads and cereals. Remember also to drink plenty of water and fluids. Changing your eating and drinking lifestyle avoid constipation and helps in passing the stool out easily.

    3

Observe proper anal hygiene. Keep the area clean and dry at all times. Avoid scrubbing the area for this further aggravates the hemorrhoids and causes irritation. When wiping, use a gentle and slow motion. Using water to clean the area is the best but if this is not possible, clean your anus by patting gently using a moist toilet paper of baby wipes.

    4

Reduce your weight. Losing weight significantly decreases the pressure on the lower part of your body specifically the rectum area. Maintain a healthy weight for your height to get rid of hemorrhoids.

    5

Avoid lifting heavy objects or other form of activity where you do excessive straining. Ask someone else to help you out.

    6

Refrain from prolonged sitting for extended periods of time. This will limit the pressure being exerted on your bottom. When your work requires you to be seated most of the time, take a break every now and then and walk around for few minutes.

    7

Apply ice pack to the affected area. It will give a quick relief from the pain and swelling by shrinking the veins. Take small pieces of ice cubes and put them in a bag. Apply on the affected area of the skin. Be careful not to insert the ice directly into the rectum because it will burn your skin.

    8

Soak yourself in a warm tub or sitz bath several times a day for about 10 minutes. The warm water will ease the swelling and alleviate the pain associated with hemorrhoids. Make sure to use clean water free from any bath products.

How to Treat a Runny Nose With Natural Medicine

How to Treat a Runny Nose With Natural Medicine

Boil 1 cup of water with one teaspoon of elder berry, 1 tsp. of fresh mint, 1 tsp. of yarrow root and 1/4 tsp. of cayenne pepper for five minutes. Strain the herbs and allow the tea to cool. Keep your handkerchief handy, because this tea will make your nose run even more at first, but you symptoms will soon dry up.

    2

Take 400 mg of andrographis three times a day before meals to help dry a runny nose. Andrographis is a natural homeopathic treatment that is often called "Indian Echinacea," as it shares many of the same curative properties. Andrographis is readily available in natural food stores or from your naturopath.

Natural Home Remedy for Sinus in Kids

Sinus infections in children are a common ailment that causes swelling of the sinuses and nasal cavity. Parents often have difficulty recognizing the symptoms of a sinus infection in small children. According to emedicinehealth, symptoms commonly associated with sinus infections include headache or pressure in the eyes, nose or cheek areas, cough, fever and bad breath. The symptoms usually develop after a viral infection such as the common cold.

Relieve Congestion

According to Dr. Alan Greene, clinical professor of pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine, saline nose drops may help thin out mucus and speed healing. Saline drops are available at pharmacies and health food stores. Avoid using the same dropper on more than one child, as this causes cross-contamination.
    .

Thin Mucus

Offer your child plenty of clear liquids such as water, juice, hot tea and soup to help thin mucus. A common home remedy many parents find useful for thinning mucus and relieving congestion is steam. According to the Children's Hospital of Boston, many pediatricians routinely recommend the use of cool-mist humidifiers in sinusitis treatment. If you do not have a steam vaporizer, try turning on the shower and closing the door, allowing the bathroom to fill with steam. Have your child sit in the room and inhale the steam. For an older child, boil a pot of water and have him inhale the steam from the pot. Place a towel over his head to prevent steam from escaping. Do this in 10-minute increments as often as needed.

Pain Relief

Sinus infections can be extremely painful and many parents wonder which home remedies they can use. Have your child lay on her bed. Turn off the lights and shut the blind to make the room as dark as possible, as light can often aggravate headaches. Alternate between a hot and cold compress applied to the affected areas. Perform a facial massage to the affected area by applying light pressure with your fingertips and stroking the skin. According to chinese-holistic-health-exercises.com, holding the pressure while kneading in a circular motion for one to two minutes, several times per day, may relieve sinus pain and pressure.

Home Remedy for Thick Toenails

Home Remedy for Thick Toenails

Whether you have thick toenails because of a skin condition such as eczema or psoriasis, fungus or even injury, simple alternatives to prescription medications can treat this condition. Save money and avoid the side effects that can result from costly prescription medications with readily available household products. Determine the cause of your thick toenails before treating. Raised reddish spots and flaking skin could mean Psoriasis, whereas itchy, dry skin with no flaking indicates eczema. If psoriasis or eczema could be behind your thick toenails, seek treatment for these conditions first. White patches, yellow or brownish discoloration and separation between the toenail and nail bed are all signs of fungus.

Instructions

Vapor Rub Treatment

    1

Use toenail clippers to cut your nails as short and close to the skin as possible.

    2

Use an emery board or nail file to file your toenails down as much as is comfortable. This improves the nails' appearance and if your nails are thick because of fungus, filing your nails thinner will help the treatment reach the fungus.

    3

Apply vapor rub to toenails twice a day. The MayoClinic cites anecdotal reports that this treatment works for some individuals but recommends you talk to your doctor before using this remedy.

Epsom Salts Treatment

    4

Clip your toenails as short and close to the skin as possible.

    5

File your toenails down as much as is comfortable.

    6

Soak your feet in epsom salts, also known as magnesium sulfate, two to three times a day for a half an hour at a time. Dr. Ray Sahelian recommends using very hot water and putting epsom salt directly on the affected nails and surrounding area.

White Vinegar Treatment

    7

Trim your nails short and close to the skin.

    8

File your nails down with an emery board or file so that the nail is thinner and absorbs treatment better.

    9

Apply white vinegar directly to your affected toenails or soak your feet in one part vinegar to two parts warm water mixture two to three times a day. Vinegar can reduce the growth of certain bacteria.

    10

Reduce the amount of vinegar in your soak if you experience any skin irritation or treat less frequently until the irritation clears up.

Tea Tree Oil Treatment

    11

Clip affected toenails as close to the skin as possible.

    12

File the affected toenails down as thin as you can.

    13

Apply tea tree oil on your toenail, the skin around it and under the tip of the nail twice a day. Tea tree oil has natural antifungal properties.

Drug-free Pain Relief

Drug-free Pain Relief

Painkillers such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen are considered to be safe and well-tolerated by most people. Yet, all allopathic (traditional) medications have their share of side effects, especially when consumed over a long period of time. You can have drug-free relief from pain if your pain is a manifestation of physical and mental stress, minor injury or inflammation. However, if your pain is severe and does not respond to alternative treatment, see your doctor to rule out chronic underlying diseases.

Cold and Hot Packs

    Ice

Sore muscles respond well to cold and hot packs. "For best results, alternate between hot and cold packs for a minute each until you begin to experience relief from pain," says Dr. Jayanardhana Iyengar, a Connecticut-based homeopath and certified massage therapist.

Massage Therapy

    Relax your muscles

Generalized body pain caused by stress and/or bad posture can find immediate relief with a therapeutic massage of warm oil, infused with healing herbs.

Homeopathy

    Arnica

In a November 2007 column in Vitality magazine titled "Arnica for Pain Relief," Dr. Christopher De Barros, a Toronto, Canada-based homeopath, wrote: "In homeopathic medicine, the top pain-relieving prescription remedy is arnica. This flowering plant is commonly referred to as Leopard's Bane, and is easily found in natural health products stores, particularly as an ointment. Arnica is prescribed homeopathically in any case where the individual has suffered a trauma. For example, someone who has fallen off of a bicycle would be a prime candidate for arnica, as it would work quite effectively in quelling the pain, bruising and soreness. This remedy is effective because it stimulates healing in the venous system, muscles, tendons, as well as the surrounding tissue. In such cases, it is most effective as an orally ingested remedy. However, arnica can also be applied locally on an injury in the form of an ointment or gel. Here, it can also be quite successful in treating bruises and scrapes." Dr. De Barros also recommends arnica for sprains and headaches (especially migraines).

Biofreeze & Pain Patches

Spray Biofreeze on sore muscles and joints. According to the website biofreeze.com, this pain reliever contains all-natural ingredients such as natural menthol and botanical ingredients consisting of arnica, calendula, chamomile, echinacea, juniper berry and white tea. The makers of Biofreeze claim that the drug-free painkiller can alleviate pain in the back, shoulder and neck; ease ankle, knee, hip and elbow joint discomfort; and soothe muscle sprains and strains. The manufacturers state that the formula reduces pain associated with arthritis, bursitis, diabetic neuropathy, tendinitis and plantar fascitis. This writer has experienced significant pain relief by applying Biofreeze in the neck and shoulder.
Another drug-free option is to apply natural pain patches such as Tiger Balm, advertised for arthritis, back pains and muscle aches and strains. The active ingredients in this product are camphor, menthol and capsicum extract. This writer has used the pain patch as well and found quick relief.

Ginger & Turmeric

    Ginger

Ginger and turmeric have anti-inflammatory properties and help minimize inflammation-related pain. A study conducted by researchers at the University of Arizona and published in the November 2006 issue of Arthritis & Rheumatism found that turmeric is effective in treating osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Prepare a simple, healthy drink of ginger-infused tea a day, or dissolve a pinch of turmeric powder in a boiling cup of milk. Add to it a pinch of cardamom, a pinch of nutmeg, a few strands of saffron, a pinch of ginger powder and a tablespoon of honey. Drink right away.

Difference Between Aloe Vera Gel & Juice

Difference Between Aloe Vera Gel & Juice

Aloe vera is a perennial plant grown in warm weather climates. The viscous liquid from the aloe vera leaf is used to make aloe vera juice and aloe vera gel. Aloe vera juice and aloe vera gel can be safely ingested, and both are derived from the inner gel of the aloe vera leaf; however, aloe vera gel is mixed with a food grade thickening agent to make it thicker.

Aloe Vera Juice

Aloe vera juice is derived from the green part of the leaf that surrounds the gel, and is ingested orally. When taken daily, aloe vera juice provides digestive benefits. Drink 2 to 8 oz. aloe vera juice every day to reap the benefits of the herb's natural healing properties. Some of the minerals found in aloe vera juice include calcium, sodium, iron, potassium, chromium, magnesium, manganese, copper, and zinc. The juice is the liquid form of aloe vera, and the texture is much less thick than the gel.

Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera gel is thick and is ideally used in topical application. The aloe from the leaf is a clear gel, but is often dyed green in commercial products. It is sold in a bottle and can either be squeezed out or pumped like soap. Aloe vera gel can be found in hundreds of skin products, including lotion and sunblock. Aloe vera juice and gel yield the same benefits.

Benefits

Aloe vera juice and gel is a concoction of antioxidants, antibiotics, cell growth stimulator, anti-inflammatory agent, astringent, and pain/scar inhibitor properties. Aloe vera helps cleanse the digestive system, provide energy, hydrate and sooth damaged skin and supports the immune system. Aloe vera juice/gel can even be used as a weight loss tool, as it stimulates the metabolic rate in the liver cells which helps burn energy. Aloe vera provides a multitude of benefits at low cost and is readily available in most drugstores.

Facts

Aloe vera is a powerhouse of nutrients. It contains high levels of minerals, amino acids, B12 vitamin and enzymes, which contribute to its healing properties. There are over 250 different species of aloe plants; however, only five species are recognized as having nutritional and medicinal value. There are actually 15 poisonous types of aloe vera plants. Aloe vera plants are not mature until they are 4 years old, and the aloe vera should not be extracted until that time.

Alternative Medicine for Narrow-Angle Glaucoma

Narrow angle glaucoma is one of the two main forms of glaucoma. Glaucoma increases pressure in the eye, advances slowly and can lead to blindness. There is no cure, and treatment aims to reduce pressure in the eye to prevent vision loss. Natural treatment strategies can help treat glaucoma; however, you should always consult with an ophthalmologist to determine the most effective treatments for you. Certain natural therapies offer similar benefits, so taking all of them is not necessary. Consulting with a health care provider experienced in natural therapy can help you design a treatment plan.

Nutritional Supplements

Using certain nutritional supplements can improve eye health in general. Antioxidants protect certain enzymes responsible for protecting eye tissue from being destroyed. Lutein and zeaxanthin are the two supplements best known for eye health. Take two to six mg daily of lutein and one to 10 mg daily of xeathin. Omega-3 fatty acids like those found in fish oil combat inflammation. Take one to two capsules or 1 tbsp. daily. Talk to your doctor about this treatment if you take blood-thinning medications, including aspirin You can also obtain these beneficial substances from diet. Rich supplies of lutein and zeaxanthin can be found in red, yellow and orange fruits and vegetables as well as dark, leafy greens. Omega-3 fatty acids are abundant in cold-water fish like salmon, walnuts and flaxseed.

Vitamin C, coenzyme Q10 and alpha-lipoic acid all provide antioxidant support; take 500 to 1,000 mg daily of vitamin C, 100 to 200 mg of Q10 at bedtime and 25 to 50 mg of alpha-lipoic acid twice a day. Melatonin is a powerful antioxidant and can also help you fall asleep at night; take 2 to 5 mg before bed.

Herbal Therapy

Certain herbal supplements promote eye health. Consult with a professional health care provider before taking herbal supplements. Bilberry is an herb known for promoting healthy vision; take 80 mg three times a day. Ginkgo (40 to 80 mg three times a day) and green tea (250 to 500 mg daily) are powerful antioxidants.

Homeopathic Remedies

Homeopathy is a very individualized form of medicine that takes many factors into account besides the main condition when determining treatment; these factors include very specific things like personality and emotional state. If you are interested in using homeopathic remedies as part of a natural treatment strategy, your best bet is to consult with a professional homeopath to design a personalized regimen. The following treatments can address symptoms of glaucoma (use as directed on the label): Phosphorus can treat vertigo, physostigma eases spasms and spigelia works on sharp pains.

Uses of Argentyn 23 Colloidal Silver

Uses of Argentyn 23 Colloidal Silver

Argentyn 23 colloidal silver is used to treat infections caused by bacteria and fungi, as well as to inhibit the growth and spread of bacteria and fungi on medical instruments and in hospital settings. According to the manufacturer's fact sheet, "Argentyn 23 is designed to provide precise levels of functional silver in safe and non-toxic ranges. It contains only silver metal ions and ultra-pure water, and the silver content is 99.99% pure."

Silver Ions

Briefly, silver ions, which are charged atoms, can regulate cellular immune functions when treating fungal or bacterial pathogens causing infection. Silver can interfere with the formation of proteins and DNA, which are necessary for the growth and proliferation of these pathogens. Because of its positive charges, silver ions can literally pull electrons away from other molecules and weaken them to the point where they break and become biologically useless and susceptible to cleavage by enzymes.

Fungi and Medical Devices

Argentyn 23 colloidal silver is used in hospitals to prevent the growth of fungi on medical devices. Fungal infections of this sort are referred to nosocomial, or "hospital-acquired," infections and have been a major concern in the health-care industry. An article appearing in the October 2010 issue of "Biomolecules" compared the anti-fungal actions of colloidal silver to a compound that incorporates colloidal silver into a silica base. The study found that the incorporation of the silica increased the effectiveness of colloidal silver by allowing the compound to more efficiently coat medical devices and prevent the growth of fungi.

Antibacterial Effects

Argentyn 23 colloidal silver is also used to prevent bacterial infections. An article appearing in a 2006 edition of "Current Problems in Dermatology" investigated the antibacterial effects of colloidal silver through its incorporation into fabrics for clinical use to prevent the spread of disease. The study found that colloidal silver will interfere with the formation of proteins and amino acids, which are the building blocks of DNA and RNA, thereby inhibiting the growth of bacterial cells. The authors cautioned, however, that inhalation or chronic ingestion of colloidal silver can induce non-life threatening conditions such as irritation to the eyes and discoloration of the skin.

Yeast Infection

Oropharyngeal candidiasis is a yeast infection occurring in the mouth and throat, which is most often seen in immunocompromised individuals such as those suffering from cancer or AIDS. A study published in the August 1997 issue of "Pharmacology World Science" investigated the effects of mouthwashes with colloidal silver to treat the occurrence of oral yeast infections. Additionally, this study evaluated the stability, or shelf life, of products containing colloidal silver. The study found that these products were effective in the treatment of the disease and were stable for up to nine days when stored at 5 degrees Celsius.

Precautions

Colloidal silver is readily available from many manufacturers and is widely advertised on the Internet. Although colloidal silver appears to have minimal side effects and is available without a prescription, consult a primary health care professional before using this compound to treat infections.

Home Remedy: Coffee Enemas

Using a coffee enema to detoxify organs such as the colon, liver, gallbladder and kidneys is a controversial cleansing method that has not been supported by scientific evidence of success. Nevertheless, many people still use this home remedy in an attempt to cleanse the body of toxins.

Supplies

To perform a coffee enema you will need the following items:

Any variety of caffeinated organic coffee, finely ground
Clean, fresh water that is chlorine-free
    Stainless steel or glass pot
    Strainer
    Enema bag
    Old towel
    Lubricating jelly (optional)

Preparation

Combine two tablespoons of coffee with one quart of fresh water in a cooking pot. If the water you are using is chlorinated, boil it for about twenty minutes prior to mixing it with the coffee. Once the water and coffee are combined in a pot, boil for five minutes, then simmer for five more minutes. Using a strainer, remove the coffee grounds from the liquid. Allow the liquid to cool to room temperature and it is ready for use.

Procedure

Pour the coffee mixture into the enema bag. Be sure to allow the air within the bag to escape before clamping the bag shut. Hang the bag about two feet from the ground. If you choose to use a lubricating gel, now is the time to lubricate the anus and/or the tip of the enema bag. Lie on your side on top of an old towel. If you would prefer, you can lie on your back with your knees against your chest. With your body completely relaxed, slowly insert the tip of the enema bag into the anus. One the nozzle is in place, release the clamp on the enema bag, allowing the coffee to flow into the body. After half of the coffee from the bag is gone, close the clamp. With the enema still in place, rotate between lying on both sides and your back for about four minutes in each position. Hold your bowels for as long as you can, preferably about 12 minutes, and then use the toilet. You will then repeat the coffee enema process again, using the liquid remaining in the bag. Try to refrain from releasing the bowels a little longer the second time around, but do not exceed 12 minutes.

Once the procedure is complete, thoroughly wash the enema bag with hot water and allow it to dry completely. Be sure to sterilize the enema tube prior to each use.

Home Remedies for Nicotine Cravings

Home Remedies for Nicotine Cravings

Nicotine is an oily, toxic and, in small doses, stimulating chemical that is the primary active ingredient in tobacco products. According to mothernature.com, nicotine intake provides pleasure in individuals who are addicted, and soon their bodies convince them that they need more and more to feel satisfied. These are nicotine cravings, and are characterized by irritability, anxiety and in some cases insomnia. Luckily, there are several home remedies that can help ease these cravings.

Citrus Fruits

According to mothernature.com, drinking lots of orange juice will help ease your nicotine cravings. This is because the juice makes your urine more acidic, which in turn helps eliminate nicotine from your body faster. According to home-remedies-for-you.com, all citrus fruits have this effect, including lemons, limes, grapefruits, kumquats, pomelos, tangerines and mandarins.

Cayenne Pepper

Eating cayenne pepper (made from dried, red chilies) is another way to reduce cravings. According to homemademedicine.com, cayennea natural antioxidanthelps reduce the sensitivity of lung tissue to the effects of nicotine, which reduces both cravings and potential lung damage. For cigarette smokers, the peppery, spicy taste makes smoking unpleasant, which also helps reduce cravings.

Reward Yourself

Another home remedy for nicotine cravings relies on psychological as opposed to physical and biological treatment. According to mothernature.com, a federal study has shown that if you pay yourself a dollar (or reward yourself in another way) for every day you go without smoking, your chances of quitting increase. So next time you feel a craving, realize that if you give in, you will be missing out on a reward for that day.

Vitamins

According to homemademedicine.com, taking vitamins, particularly A, C, and E, can also help reduce nicotine cravings. While taking vitamin A will help repair damaged mucus membranes, taking a vitamin C supplement will help bring the amount of this essential vitamin in your body back to a healthy level (nicotine breaks it down). Vitamin E is an antioxidant, which will help repair cells that are damaged by nicotine intake.

Exercise

While exercising and playing sports certainly have beneficial effects on your physical health, in terms of reducing cravings these activities also work on a psychological level. According to mothernature.com, exercising and playing sports helps take your mind off of cravings, and also helps make nicotine intake seem taboo. For instance, if you are in the middle of a soccer game, you will likely be more focused on scoring or playing defense as opposed to smoking. Also, other players will likely be irritated if you need to stop play every 10 minutes for a smoke break, which acts as a deterrent.

How to Find an Orthomolecular Doctor

How to Find an Orthomolecular Doctor

Orthomolecular medicine consists of balancing the body's naturally occurring nutrients and chemicals through vitamin therapy and introduces other nutrients, often in megadoses. While a substantial body of evidence supports the medical benefits of this treatment, many in the medical community reject these findings as the result of the 'placebo effect.' As a result, finding an orthomolecular doctor can be challenging.

Instructions

Decide if Orthomolecular Medicine Is for You

    1

Learn about orthomolecular medicine before undergoing treatment. The practice, which originated as a way to alleviate neurological disorders in the 1950s, was later assimilated by Linus Pauling to treat a wider range of illnesses, like cancer, influenza and autism.

    2

Know that the concept of treating patients with nutrients was first considered a last resort when traditional medicine failed. Today, doctors who practice this method consider it a safe, effective alternative.

    3

Learn more when you visit Orthomolecular Medicine Online (see Resources below).

Find an Orthomolecular Medicine Practitioner

    4

Use the search engine at the American College for Advancement in Medicine Web site to locate a practitioner (see Resources below).

    5

Find a Web site dedicated to orthomolecular practitioners. Orthomolecular.org provides links to doctors in both the United States and abroad (see Resources below).

    6

Call the offices of practitioners within a reasonable distance to schedule an initial consultation. Find out how long this consultation will last and whether or not you will be charged for it.

    7

Make an appointment with the practitioner(s) who strike you as the most trustworthy and experienced. Arrive at your appointment with a list of questions.

    8

Begin a course of treatment if the practitioner feels--and you agree--that you could benefit from orthomolecular medical treatment.

Natural Allergy Relief Spray

Millions of people suffer from seasonal allergies in the spring and the fall. Some suffer year-round due to additional allergies to cats, dogs, dust or mold. It is never pleasant to have an allergy attack, which feels as though you have a horrible head cold, but one that does not go away.

Although there are a variety of prescription allergy medications on the market today, some people prefer to try more natural options. The reason for this is often that natural remedies have fewer side effects. There are several natural allergy relief sprays available.

Allergy Buster Spray

An 100% natural alternative to conventional allergy relief sprays, Allergy Buster Spray combines capsaicin (a form of pepper) and nettle to supposedly provide complete allergy relief. It contains no chemicals, addictive ingredients, or preservatives. The spray is non-habit forming and even comes with a money-back guaranteed.

The independent website Allergyrelief101.com states that the capsaican (pepper) in a spray such as Allergy Buster works to unstuff the nose and stop the sinus headaches. Nettle is added to keep the allergens from infiltrating the body, providing more instantaneous results.

This spray must be ordered online, and costs $15.99 plus shipping for 20ml, as of 2009. You use the spray as needed for symptoms, with one to three sprays in each nostril for adults.

Allerease

Allerease is a homeopathic oral (in the mouth) spray. It contains a total of fourteen natural ingredients, and is said to relieve both hay fever and allergy symptoms. Users experience no annoying or irritating side effects. Some of the main ingredients include red onion, purple cornflower, honey, and yellow jasmine.

A 2009 article in Healthlyliving.com gives advice from Paul S. Anderson, ND, a naturopathic physician from Washington, in which he recommends the ingredients in Allerease, such as red onion and honey, for treating allergies.

Allerease is FDA regulated, and for your safety it is manufactured in American laboratories which are subject to FDA guidelines and oversight. It is also ordered online and costs $20 for 41ml as of 2009. The common adult dosage is one spray three times a day under the tongue.

Taurlmmune Allergy Spray

Taking a slightly different approach to allergy treatment, Taurlmmune Allergy Spray is said to build up your immunity to help prevent allergies. It is also homeopathic and is for those who are allergic to pets, dust, chemicals, pollen and hay.

One of the primary ingredients, silicea, is actually a homeopathic salt from Germany, and strengthens the immune system. In 1987, a study published in the European Journal of Pharmacology showed that silicea increased the parts of the immune system that engulfed bacteria or other foreign substances.

This product, as of 2009, costs $29.90 US for one bottle. You may purchase in bulk for additional savings. The standard adult dosage is one spray in each nostril four times a day.

As with any natural or homeopathic remedies, consult your physician before using.

How to Use Home Remedies to Treat Canker Sores

How to Use Home Remedies to Treat Canker Sores

Canker sores are painful sores in the mouth, and are also known as mouth ulcers. Some causes of canker sores are eating hot food that burn the palate of your mouth, biting down on the inside of your jaw really hard, eating sour foods that stick to the lining of the cheek, eating an unhealthy diet, low immune system, stress, genetics and a minor injury of the mouth like a slip of the toothbrush or a jab from a toothpick. If your parents had canker sores, you are more likely to get them. If you take certain medications for rheumatoid arthritis, you are also more likely to get a canker sore. There are ways to treat canker sores that are easy and cheap.

Instructions

    1

Apply a wet black tea bag to the canker sore and leave it on for a few minutes. The tannic acid in the tea bag can ease the pain from the canker sore.

    2

Dilute 1 tbsp. of hydrogen peroxide with a glass of water and swish it around in your mouth like a mouthwash. Hydrogen peroxide mixed with water makes a mouthwash that can disinfect the canker sore and make it heal faster. Use the hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash several times a day, but be careful not to swallow it.

    3

Take 1 tbsp. of Mylanta or Milk of Magnesia and swish it around your mouth. The Mylanta or Milk of Magnesia will coat the canker sore and keep it from getting infected. If the canker sore is already infected, do not use this home remedy, because the coating will protect the bacteria that caused the infection. You will know if the canker sore is already infected if you see a red ring around the canker sore and a grayish, yellow color. If it becomes infected, see a doctor for treatment.

    4

Mix 1 tsp. of Milk of Magnesia with 1 tsp. of Benadryl allergy liquid medicine and swish it around your mouth several times a day to help ease the pain caused by a canker sore. Make sure to spit this mixture out after swishing it around for a few minutes.

    5

Mix baking soda and water to make a paste, and apply it to the canker sore. Or mix 1 tsp. of baking soda with 1 tsp. of salt and 2 oz. of hydrogen peroxide. Use this as a mouthwash several times a day to help ease the pain from the canker sore and speed up the healing process. If this mixture is too strong, dilute it with some water.

How to Keep Fungus Away From Your Feet

How to Keep Fungus Away From Your Feet

If you suffer from "fungus feet," you might have naturally sweaty feet, or you might have a very active job or lifestyle that makes it hard to keep moisture out of your shoes and away from your feet. The best way to keep fungus away is to take strong preventive measures to keep your feet clean and dry.

Instructions

    1

Wash and dry your feet thoroughly before putting on shoes and socks. If your feet are damp when you put on your shoes and socks, you are encouraging fungus to grow. Be sure to dry thoroughly between your toes.

    2

Sprinkle baby powder or cornstarch in your moisture-wicking socks. If you don't have money for special socks, choose socks made of natural materials -- for example, choose cotton over polyester socks.

    3

Sprinkle baby powder or cornstarch in the bottom of your shoes and spread evenly throughout.

    4

Wear shoes and socks only when necessary -- at home, go barefoot if you can, or wear flip-flops. This will help keep your feet dry. Fungus thrives in damp, dark conditions.

    5

Alternate shoes, if you can, so that your shoes have a day to dry out before you wear them again.

    6

Avoid showering in public showers, such as a locker room. If you must shower there rather than at home, wear flip-flops in the shower, to avoid picking up fungus.

How to Treat Peritonitis With Natural Medicine

Diverticulitis is the beginning stage of peritonitis, caused when the inflammation begins to spread to the abdominal lining. Peritonitis is a serious condition that usually requires painful and expensive surgery; however, if you suffer from diverticulitis you can treat your symptoms and prevent the onset or further spread of peritonitis.

Instructions

    1

Prevent the onset of further spread of peritonitis and treat the symptoms of diverticular disease by increasing your intake of fiber. Eating at least 15 g of fiber everyday will help the stools to move easily through the intestines, eliminating the excess pressure in the colon that causes peritonitis and diverticulitis. Psyllium powder, flaxseed meal and legumes are among the long list of fiber rich foods you should include in your diet.

    2

Eliminate foods that contain seeds, which may block the opening of the diverticulum, leading to aggravation and inflammation, or diverticulitis and peritonitis. Avoid cucumber, strawberries, kiwi fruit, peppers and other seedy foods, unless you carefully remove the seeds first.

    3

Take glutamine supplements, a natural medicine that can help to protect the colon wall. Through protecting the colon wall, you can successfully treat diverticulitis and peritonitis and prevent further aggravation of the colon and intestinal walls.

    4

Include omega 3 fatty acids in your regular diet, either by taking nutritional supplements or including more flax seed meal and cold water fish in your diet. Omega 3 is used for a variety of reasons in natural medicine and helps to fight the inflammation that causes peritonitis and diverticulitis. Some studies have shown that omega 3 can also help to prevent colon cancer, which is more common in people who suffer or have suffered from peritonitis and diverticulitis. While omega 3 should be augmented in your diet, omega 6, often found in red meats and dairy products, should be avoided as they aggravate inflammation of the bowels.

    5

Treat the painful symptoms of peritonitis and diverticulitis with natural homeopathic medicine. Belladonna, bryonia and colocynthis have all been used successfully to treat abdominal pain, cramping, constipation and vomiting cause by peritonitis and diverticulitis. Consult a naturopath before beginning any of these treatments.

Natural Menopause Treatments

Traditionally, hormone replacement therapy has been the gold standard for treating the symptoms of menopause. However, we now know that hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, can lead to an increased risk of breast cancer and heart disease. Natural treatments for menopause offer effective results with fewer side effects, and encompass not only herbal supplements and vitamins, but lifestyle changes that include exercise, more attention to diet and natural progesterone.

Diet

Making positive changes in your diet is one of the most effective ways to incorporate natural treatments for menopause into your lifestyle. Use your new and improved diet as a way to ease your symptoms and improve your health at the same time. Avoid consuming foods that have high amounts of caffeine. Eliminate carbonated beverages because they contain phosphorous, which can lead to bone loss. Reduce your intake of commercially prepared meats, many of which contain hormones. Limit sugar, which impacts your liver's ability to properly metabolize estrogen.

Add foods that contain phytoestrogens to your diet along with soy. Edamame is a good choice, along with soy milk, tofu, almonds, fruits and vegetables.

Supplements

Natural supplements can play a vital role in treating the symptoms of menopause. One of the most popular and useful supplements is black cohosh. Black cohosh has estrogenic properties which can help with menopause symptoms. It is considered a phytoestrogen. A recommended dosage is between 20-60 mg. 3 times a day.

Old Home Remedies for Kidney Infections

Kidney infections usually begin in the urinary tract or bladder, and prevention is the first and best method for reducing them. If it's too late for prevention, treating these infections as soon as possible will stop them from ending up in the kidneys, which is vital because a kidney infection can lead to kidney failure. But if you do end up with a kidney infection, there are some home remedies that, along with antibiotics prescribed by a doctor, can aid your recovery.

Diet

When you have a kidney, bladder or urinary tract infection, you need additional fluids in your diet. More liquids will cause more urination, which will flush away the bacteria that is causing the infection. Cranberry juice can be used to treat a kidney infection at home, but make sure the it's pure juice and not cranberry juice cocktail, which is loaded with sugar.
Avoid caffeine, alcohol and citrus juice when you have a kidney infection, because these beverages will aggravate the feeling that you must urinate, without producing the urine.
The kidneys also regulate the amount of phosphorous in the blood, so when your kidneys are not functioning at the optimum level, avoiding foods that are rich in phosphorous will help you avoid dangerously high levels in the blood. Almost every food has some phosphorous in it, which makes it impossible to completely eliminate it from your diet. But some foods have higher levels and as such should be avoided while the kidneys are impaired. These include milk, dried peas, beans and lentils, whole grains, organ meat, chocolate and nuts.

Herbal Remedies

Herbal remedies can be very effective while you are being treated for a kidney infection. Remember that a kidney infection can become very serious, very quickly, so always consult with your doctor before beginning any herbal treatment.
Corn silk has a diuretic effect that has been used since the 18th century to treat kidney, urinary tract and bladder infections and gall bladder problems. Corn silk is brewed in a tea or taken as a tablet.
Parsley is also a diuretic and is used in foods or teas to flush out the kidneys by stimulating frequent urination.
Cleavers herb has a wonderful array of health benefits that include diuretic, anti-inflammatory and astringent capabilities. Add 3 tablespoons of dried or fresh cleavers to a pint of boiling water and steep for 10 minutes. Drink throughout the day.

Vitamins and Minerals

Taking B vitamins, vitamin E and vitamin C can help with the treatment of kidney infection. Also make sure you are getting plenty of copper, magnesium and potassium while you are treating a kidney infection.
Remember that a kidney infection can quickly become very serious. Visit your doctor if you are experiencing fever, intense back pain and chills.

Stretch Mark Treatment Products

Stretch marks are caused when the dermis, the layer of skin underneath the epidermis, stretches and the collagen and elastin break. This causes thin lines that are at first raised and red, and later turn white and then a silvery color. Traditionally, cocoa butter has been used on stretch marks, but recent studies have shown that it might be ineffective. Many stretch mark sufferers use methods including mesotherapy, micro needling or dry skin brushing.

Features

Stretch marks might be partly due to genetics and may also be caused by using certain steroids, but usually they result from progressive stretching of the skin, which happens during rapid weight gain or during pregnancy. There is no cure for stretch marks, although anecdotal evidence suggests that massaging with creams and lotions might help.

Significance

Stretch marks are a cosmetic problem only. They represent no health risk, and they will fade over time. Because they fade over time, it is difficult to tell whether a suggested remedy actually worked, or whether time alone lessened the stretch marks. After six months, stretch marks naturally fade to a less noticeable color and texture and are no longer raised.

Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy for stretch marks is recommended for people in their 20s and 30s, and it consists of injecting a cocktail of vitamins just under the skin. According to the Mesotherapy Handbook, the patient needs several treatments annually. Mesotherapy works best when the patient also follows an exercise program, does not drink alcohol, eliminates toxins and wears sunscreen.

Micro Needling

With micro needling, you roll a tube with very thin, small needles covering over the stretch marks, which stimulates collagen production. This occurs because the skin produces a healing response to being slightly irritated or injured by the needles. This type of therapy is called collagen induction. The idea behind it is that if you trick your body into thinking it is injured, it will heal itself, and the stretch marks will disappear.

Dry Skin Brushing

Dry skin brushing relies on stimulating your skin by brushing it with a vegetable bristle brush. This method works best as a preventative. By daily brushing of the skin before showering, you can make skin healthier and less susceptible to the breakage and damage that causes stretch marks. According to Dr. Emily Kane, it is a Scandinavian beauty secret. It takes only five minutes a day. You simply brush the skin toward the heart, avoiding sensitive or irritated areas.

Laser Dermabrasion

Laser dermabrasion is a costly treatment option that might lessen the appearance of stretch marks, but skin might be irritated for days afterward. According to Kane, this method might be effective for superficial stretch marks. Deeper stretch marks might not see any improvement.

Homeopathy

Thiosinaminum is a rare and obscure homeopathic cure for scarring, according to Kane. Ask a homeopathic physician about this cure. According to Vaxa.com, a producer of homeopathic remedies since 1987, it is derived from the mustard seed and is also useful for ringing in the ears, tumors and fibroids.

How to Use Spiderwort in Magic

How to Use Spiderwort in Magic

Spiderwort, Tradescantia Virginiana, was once believed to be a cure for spider bites. The blue, three-petal wildflower is native to North America. Its magical properties were used by Cherokees to alleviate menstrual pains. Herbalists make love spells from spiderwort. Survivalists and scientist use spiderwort to detect dangerous pollution or radiation. There are multiple methods to benefit from the magical properties of spiderwort.

Instructions

Tea

    1

Pick spiderwort when it is blooming. Flowers only last a day, so don't procrastinate.

    2

Remove petals from the plant and set aside. These will be used to make the tea.

    3

Boil water. Use a teakettle or saucepan to boil on the stove or put a cup of water in the microwave for three minutes.

    4

Add spiderwort petals to hot water. Petals can go directly in the water or inside a tea ball that is immersed in the water.

    5

Allow five to seven minutes for the tea to steep. Spiderwort tea was used by Cherokee to cure women's problems and kidney or stomach ailments.

Salad

    6

Pick the greens from a spiderwort plant within three hours of serving the salad. Spiderwort leaves are edible but will wilt.

    7

Chop the stems into small, bite sized pieces. Both the stems and the leaves are edible on a spiderwort plant.

    8

Mix with other greens, seasonal vegetables and dressing. Spiderwort is useful in love spells. Serve it in a salad to someone you love.

Detect Pollution

    9

Plant spiderwort plants where pollution or radiation could be a problem. Spiderwort is sometimes planted near nuclear plants.

    10

Observe the color of the blooms. Spiderwort usually has blue or purple flowers, blooming in the summer months.

    11

Keep observing the blooms. Spiderwort reacts to pollution or radiation by turning its blue or purple flowers pink. The change happens quickly, making the plant a useful indicator of pollution or radiation.

How to Get Rid of Muscle Knots Spasms

Is your back sore from muscle knots and spasms? The pain from muscle knots and spasms can be unbearable and can cause lack of sleep, interfere with work and disrupt your life.

Instructions

    1

I would regularly get muscle knots and spasms in my upper back, next to my shoulder blades, that would be so painful that I couldn't sleep or work. Eventually, I was able to rid myself of muscle knots and spasms by incorporating three things into my life.

    2

Stretch. Every morning, take the time to stretch your body and warm up as soon as you wake up. Start with deep breathing with your arms stretched out in front of you. Inhale with your palms turned upward, then exhale with your palms turning downward. Do this a few times, filling your lungs completely and exhaling completely. Also stretch your arms by placing your arms, one at a time, straight across your chest while using the back of your other hand to press your arm against your chest while exhaling deeply. Do this for both arms. Finally, while laying on your back, stretch your hamstrings by bringing your knee to your chest, and stretch the front of your thighs by pulling your feet backward towards your back.

    3

Exercise. Get moderate exercise to keep your body in shape. Exercise by playing sports, running, walking, swimming, gardening, yard work, or any physical activity to work out your muscles. Body weight exercises like pushups, squats and crunches are good for an overall body workout.

    4

Water. This is the secret weapon of the trio discussed here. I didn't believe it when it was first taught to me, but drinking enough water is the key. Drinking 8 cups of water a day will help to flush your body of toxins, including excessive salt. First thing in the morning (after your stretching), drink 16 fluid ounces of pure fresh water. Within 2 hours, you should start to feel the difference. Continue drinking water throughout the day until you drink your 8 cups a day.

How to Learn Jala Neti

Jala neti, or just "neti" is a nasal irrigation method. Performed properly, neti flushes toxins and loosens mucus from sinus passages. Jala neti instructors teach neti irrigation procedure. You can master the process at home with practice. It may take more than one time to feel comfortable using a neti pot, but you will become accustomed to the practice and enjoy its benefits.

Instructions

Learning Jala Neti

    1

Prepare neti solution. According to the Himalayan Institute, neti solution consists of non-iodized sea or kosher salt and water. Add to your neti pot 1/2 tsp. kosher salt and 1 cup distilled warm water. Mix to completely dissolve salt. Hot water can damage your nasal linings. If the water is too cool, it will cause congestion.

    2

Practice holding your head correctly. As you bend over a sink, look into it. Turn your head so that your nostrils are aligned one above the other. Keep you forehead and chin even. If your forehead is too high, the solution will pour into your mouth.

    3

Place the spout of the neti pot into your upper nostril. Do not allow any solution into your nostril, yet. The Himalayan Institute teaches to seal the spout in place. Open your mouth. Lift the pot handle, allowing solution to pour slowly into your nostril and drain from your lower nostril.

    4

Empty the neti pot and turn your head to face into the sink. According to the Himalayan Institute, simultaneously exhale through both nostrils expelling water and mucus into a tissue. Repeat the entire process with a new solution. Pour solution into the opposite nostril with your head turned opposite of the first application.
