Castor Oil & Its Remedies

Castor oil can be used to treat various conditions ranging from corns and calluses on the feet to fibroids. Castor oil is widely available at most health food stores. Castor oil, made from castor beans, the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant, is slightly yellow or colorless and has a horrible taste.

Constipation

    Take 1 to 2 tsp. of castor oil on an empty stomach to treat constipation. Castor oil works in the small and large intestines by breaking down into a substance that improves movement through the digestive tract.

Corns and Callouses

    Apply castor oil directly onto corns and callouses for relief. Surround the corn or callous with a piece of adhesive-backed corn pad (found at drugstores), place a drop of castor oil directly on the corn or callous and cover with silk tape. This softens the corn enough for removal with a pumice stone.

Fibroids

    Treat fibroids by making a castor oil pack and placing it over the affected area of the abdomen. Take a piece of flannel cloth, saturate it with castor oil and make a compress. Place the compress over the fibroid area and cover it with plastic wrap, then a towel. Place a hot water bottle over the compress to relieve pain and discomfort associated with fibroids.

Bursitis

Homemade Sea Salt Nasal Spray

If you suffer from nasal allergies or frequent sinus infections you know you will try nearly anything to get relief. Commercial nasal spritzes, both medicated and non-medicated, sell well, but dont always help very much. Your doctor may have performed an irrigation to clean out your sinuses, and this can make you feel much better, but its expensive and sometimes more invasive than youre comfortable with. Fortunately, you can perform a similar procedure yourself at home.

Kits

    You can find a few different brands of sinus washes at your local pharmacy or health food store as well as online. You can choose from special squeeze bottles, bulb syringes and neti pots (which look like small watering cans) for the delivery method. Some people even choose not to use one of the regular delivery methods and simply sniff the solution up from a spoon. Complete sinus-rinsing kits range in price from about eight to 10 dollars. They come with a couple of dozen packets of saline mix that you add to distilled water, and you can purchase refills. If you use this wash daily, you will soon spend quite a bit of money on the refills. Fortunately, you have the ingredients to make the spray solution in your kitchen.

Homemade Spray

    Look at the ingredients list on any nasal spray or wash and you will see sodium phosphate and sodium bicarbonate. Basically these are non-iodized table salt and baking soda.

    Purchase a good quality sea salt or pickling salt at your grocer or health food store, along with a box of baking soda. For a single dose, add teaspoon of the salt and teaspoon of the soda to 8 oz. warm distilled water. Dont use cold water or regular unfiltered tap water because these will cause a bad burning sensation and possibly a brief headache. Lean over a sink and either squeeze or pour a small amount of the solution into one nostril. Let the liquid run freely out the other nostril and repeat with the other side. You may want to try sniffing a little while the solution is in your sinuses to help wash them more thoroughly. Go back and forth until the water is gone. Blow your nose gently, but dont let the water get pushed into your ear canal.

    If you prefer, you can mix up a batch of the dry ingredients and store it in an airtight container. Put cup of salt and cup of soda into the container and store at room temperature. When you are ready to use some, measure out one teaspoon into warm water.

Cold sores are small, painful, fluid-filled blisters caused by the Herpes simplex 1 virus (HSV-1). These blisters form on the lips, chin, cheeks or inside of the mouth, but are not to be confused with canker sores, which are non-contagious ulcers of the mouth. Lysine

The cream is applied topically and decreases pain as well as decreasing recovery time---from roughly two weeks to as little as four days. Lysine is especially effective when taken in conjunction with vitamin C, bioflavinoids and zinc.

Licorice

Licorice root's main ingredient glycyrrhizin has both anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties, and therefore counteracts the symptoms of the Herpes simplex virus. By learning these triggers and developing a self-control routine the frequency or severity of seizures may be reduced. The success rate for this therapy is over 80 percent, according to the Andrews/Reiter Epilepsy Research Program.

Low Glycemic Index Treatment (LGIT)

    The Low Glycemic Index Treatment (LGIT) program restricts the amount of foods that cause blood glucose levels to increase. The basis of this program is to monitor the amount and type of carbohydrates eaten. According to Coping With Epilepsy, all carbohydrates must have a glycemic index below 50 and total carbohydrate intake ranging from 40 to 60 grams per day. The exact type of diet plan is individually adjusted to help reduce the amount of seizures. According to the American Academy of Neurology, 10 out of 20 enrolled in this therapy experienced at least a 90 percent reduction in seizure frequency. Aromatherapy

The treatment plan normally involves selecting one of the following oils: Ylang Ylang, Lavender, Bergamot, Camomile or Jasmine and placing a small drop on your pillow and breathing in the aroma immediately before going to bed. Treatments also involve full-body massages using the oil. Since the aforementioned oils are fat soluble compounds are able to be soaked into the skin and distributed throughout the body in the bloodstream, according to Coping With Epilepsy. When a patient feels a seizures may be triggered, they quickly inhale the oil to relax the mind and possibly avoid a seizures. According to the Birmingham University Seizure Clinic more than 50 percent of patients who utilize this treatment method experienced a reduction in seizure frequency while 35 percent of patients ceased to have seizures. Take note, the aforementioned study was not a controlled study.

How to Grow Feverfew

Widely known as a good herb to treat certain types of migraines, feverfew is a perennial native to southeastern Europe and Asia, but found in many other areas. This is a perfect plant for those without a green thumb. It will grow anywhere, even in bad soil and among weeds. Its reputation for being low maintenance convinces many amateur herbalists to grow feverfew right in their own backyards.

    Decide where to plant your feverfew and if you want to use pots or sow the seeds right into the ground. You'll have plenty of choices since feverfew will pop up between the cracks in a sidewalk or a wall, a weedy garden or even on a rocky slope. Feverfew loves full sun and doesn't need an abundance of moisture.

    Plant by seed in the spring or root division in the fall. Feverfew can grow up to two feet. Its leaves are brightly colored and have an aromatic smell, but somewhat bitter taste. The plant will live through a mild winter if placed in a sheltered spot.

    Watch for flowers which appear from summer until mid-fall and look like daisies with yellow centers. As feverfew self sows its seed, the flowers will be quite plentiful.

    Harvest the entire plant while in bloom. Cut the leaves and flowers as needed. Dry the flowers face down on a flat surface to use later in potpourri. The leaves, flowers and occasionally, the stems, are used for medicinal purposes and are what give the feverfew its commercial value.

    Store no longer than 120 days to maintain full effectiveness. Studies reveal feverfew leaves are best stored in powdered form in freezer conditions (-15C).

Natural Drugs for Relief of Tendonitis

Tendons are the fibrous cords that connect muscle tissue to bones. Tendinitis refers to the irritation or inflammation of any of the body's tendons, though the condition most often occurs in and around the shoulders, elbows, wrists, and heels (see Reference 1). Conventional treatments for tendinitis frequently rely on over-the-counter pain relievers, injections of cortisone around the inflamed tendon, physical therapy, and in severe cases, even surgery. However, treatments are available that utilize natural alternatives to traditional medicine.

Herbs and Supplements

    Numerous anti-inflammatory herbs are available for the treatment of tendinitis. Turmeric is particularly viable, as it has been shown in some laboratory experiments to be equally as effective as hydrocortisone and phenylbutazone (see Resource 1). Turmeric can be purchased in capsule form, and the typical dosage usually ranges between 400 and 600 mg per day.

    Studies have also shown that devil's claw is an effective pain reliever. The drawback, however, is that you must take up to six 500mg capsules per day.

    Licorice root offers relief in a form similar to the body's own corticosteroids. It not only decreases free radicals at the affected area, it inhibits enzymes responsible for inflammation. Boil 1/2 tsp. of the herb in 1 cup of water for 15 minutes to brew a tea you should drink three times a day. Be aware that licorice should not be taken if you are pregnant, on diuretics, have high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid, liver, or heart disease.

    MSM, or organic sulphur, is a natural pain reliever, while organic silicon helps promote the body's own healing process. Vitamin C is also essential in the body's production of collagen, one of the main components of healthy tendons.

    It is recommended you consult a physician before undertaking an alternative treatment consisting of herbs and/or supplements.

Topical Treatments

    Topical treatments are applied to the skin over the area of inflammation. First, never use heat once you begin to feel the initial pain of tendinitis. Only use cold therapy (see Reference 2). A cold compress made by mixing chamomile oil, camphor, eucalyptus oil, rosemary oil, and lavender in cold water will provide pain relief. After the compress, apply boswellin cream to the affected area. This cream is made from an herb used for hundreds of years to treat pain. Another alternative option is combining 10 to 15 drops of peppermint essential oil with vegetable oil and rubbing the mixture over the sore spot.

Acupuncture and Lifestyle

    Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese method of natural pain relief. It relies on inserting needles into the skin to unblock energy pathways, known as meridians, to diminish pain. Several studies conducted by the Cochrane Collaboration have suggested that acupuncture is an effective treatment for tendinitis (see Reference 3). The treatments are most beneficial if done one to three times a week for several weeks. If you have insurance, check your coverage, as acupuncture is covered under some plans.

    Lifestyle also plays an important role in treating tendinitis. It is suggested that once you begin to feel pain or discomfort associated with tendinitis, you should immobilize the affected area and avoid activities that would cause pain or swelling. Do not attempt to push through the pain. Resting the tendon is an important component of healing the inflamed tissues. If the pain is affecting your knee, elevate it above the level of your heart.

When you were a kid and your mother told you to eat your carrots because they were good for your eyes, she was really saying that there were some vitamins in carrots that could help keep your eyes healthy for longer. Today, these vitamins can typically be purchased as supplements or they can be added to your diet by eating certain foods that contain them naturally.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin

    Lutein and zeaxanthin, commonly found in carrots (just like your mother told you) and green foods such as kale, spinach and collard greens are two vitamins which have a great deal to do with reducing the risks of macular degeneration, one of the most common causes of blindness in the elderly. Lutein and zeaxanthin work to absorb certain kinds of light in order to protect plants while they are growing. In humans, these vitamins perform a similar function, preventing certain kinds of damaging light from hitting the retina and causing macular degeneration.

Vitamin A

    While lutein and zeaxanthin protect the inner parts of the eye, vitamin A protects the outer part of the eye, the cornea. Vitamin A, found in carrots, beef, chicken livers, and dairy products, is often used to treat dry eyes and is commonly deficient in the populations of developing countries. It should be noted that while vitamin A is good for your eyes, too much of it can be toxic and as such you should consult with your doctor before taking large amounts of it in supplement form.

Vitamin C and bioflavonoids

    Eating foods like peppers, strawberries and oranges should provide you with both vitamin C and bioflavonoids which are vital for the health of your eyes. While they are more commonly known for helping to prevent or minimize the effects of the common cold, these vitamins can also help to strengthen the blood vessels tin your eyes, thus helping to prevent a host of health problems, including cataracts and macular degeneration.

Natural Homemade Topical Anti-fungal

A topical anti-fungal is a medication applied to the skin to treat certain fungal infections, such as ringworm and athlete's foot. Anti-fungal drugs are typically prescribed by a doctor, but may also be purchased over-the-counter or made at home using natural ingredients commonly found in drug stores, grocery stores, or perhaps already in your home. Natural topical anti-fungal medications are only recommended for superficial fungus infections that can affect the skin, fingernails and toenails, or hair.

Essential Oils

    Essential oils are the most commonly used topical anti-bacterial and anti-fungal treatments. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, essential oils have anti-microbial properties that fight bacteria and fungi. There are more than a dozen essential oils. Essential oils most effective in treating fungal infections include lavender oil, glove oil, coconut oil, orange oil, jojoba oil, rosemary oil, oil of oregano, and the most widely used--tea tree oil. Tea tree oil, according to Drug Information Online, can be used for fungal infections, scalp infections, cuts, acne, burns, stings, yeast infections, and even respiratory disorders.

    Mix essential oils together or use them on their own. You can apply essential oils straight to the skin, hair and nails, or dilute them with warm water. Mix 1 tbsp. of essential oil with about 2 cups of water. Use a clean cloth or cotton balls to apply the mixture to the skin. Several drops of essential oils may also be added to bath water to fight fungus and body odors. To treat fungus on the scalp, mix a few drops of essential oils into your favorite shampoo and conditioner.

Other Natural Anti-fungals

    Vinegar is another helpful topical antibacterial and anti-fungal remedy. White distilled vinegar and apple cider vinegar both inhibit fungus growth. Both can also be used on the skin, hair and nails. Mix 2 oz. of vinegar with about 8 oz. of warm water. Apply the mixture to the skin with a clean cloth or cotton balls several times per day.

    Epsom salt also makes a great natural topical anti-fungal treatment, especially for fungus of the feet. Fill a basin with hot water and pour about 4 oz. of Epsom salt into the water. Once the water is cool enough, soak your feet in the water for about 20 to 30 minutes. Repeat this treatment two or three times per day.

    Baking soda, fresh garlic, grapefruit seed extract, olive leaf extract, and lemon grass are other natural products you can use to treat fungus infections. Finally, eat more homemade foods that are great sources of zinc and selenium. Zinc and selenium are dietary supplements that act as antibacterial and anti-fungal agents.

Home Remedy With Honey for a Cough

If you are looking for a home remedy to treat a bothersome cough, look no further than the jar of honey sitting in your cupboard. While over-the-counter cough syrups are readily available, honey offers a homemade solution to a common symptom of colds and the flu. Honey offers a completely natural alternative to soothe a throat raw from coughing. It offers a safe and valid alternative to dextromethorphan, an ingredient found in most cough syrups. In addition, it has virtually no side effects and is quite safe for use with children.

Cayenne Honey Cough Syrup

    This is a cough syrup that tastes absolutely horrible, but works great. It helps to soothe an irritated throat and loosen congestion and phlegm in the chest. If you can tolerate the taste it is worth considering. Combine the following ingredients in a bowl: 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper, 1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger, one tablespoon of honey, one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and two tablespoons of water. Mix together well and take one to two teaspoons several hours apart for relief. You may want to make it in larger quantities and keep in a bottle in the refrigerator.

Lemon and Honey

    The combination of lemon and honey is a classic for treating a cough as well as soothing a sore throat. If you have a minor cough, try this instead of resorting to an over-the-counter cough medicine. Boil a whole lemon, remove from water, then let the lemon cool. Once it has cooled, squeeze the juice into a small bowl and combine with one cup of honey. Take two tablespoons of this mixture every four hours for relief of your coughing symptoms. This mixture coats the throat and is very soothing. It's especially effective for those coughs that involve throat irritation as opposed to those with a significant throat or chest infection.

Garlic, Onions, Oregano and Honey

    This is quite a smelly recipe for a cough-relieving syrup, but it works great on relieving a chronic cough that is accompanied by phlegm and congestion. Boil about one cup of water with two chopped-up garlic cloves, one tablespoon of oregano and one tablespoon of honey. Boil for about 10 minutes. Pour into a cup, let cool slightly and drink.

    Raw onion juice can be useful when treating a cough. Chop up an onion into very small chunks and extract the juice from the pieces. Mix one teaspoon of the onion juice with a teaspoon of honey. Take one teaspoon twice daily.

There are many natural treatments that can deal with an active infection and help prevent new ones.

Herbal Treatments

    Anise tea has powerful essential oils which help break up congestion. Take 1 cup three times daily. Bromelain tablets relieve congestion and extend the effects of prescription antibiotics by slowing down the rate they metabolize and pass through the urine. Take 500 mg three times daily between meals. People allergic to pineapple may experience a rash when using bromelain. Discontinue use if this occurs. Cat's claw builds up immunity against bacterial infections and relieves inflammation. Take 1,000 mg twice a day. Do not use cat's claw if you are pregnant or nursing. Elderberry breaks up mucus. Take as directed on the label. Horehound tea produces secretion of fluids to carry away congestion. Drink 1 cup one to two times a day. Osha tincture is a strong antibacterial. Take 10 to 15 drops in cup of water three times a day. Thyme tea alleviates congestion. Drink 1 cup up to four times a day.

Other Suggestions

    Steam inhalations of eucalyptus oil will break up congestion. Add 5 to 10 drops of oil to hot water, drape a towel over your face and the mixture and inhale the steam. Drink plenty of fluids to break up mucus and assist with drainage. Place hot wet cloths over the face several times a day to open up nasal passages. Use as much heat as you can tolerate for about 10 minutes at a time. Nasal douching will clean out the nasal passages and help flush out bacteria. Make a solution of teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water. Cup the hand, pour the solution into it and inhale into one nostril while holding the other closed. A neti pot can also be used. This is a ceramic container with a curved spout. They are available in supermarkets, health food stores and online. It is also beneficial to reduce salt and sugar intake. There are anecdotal reports that acupuncture may be helpful, but this treatment has not been extensively studied.

Massage is one of the most ancient and widespread forms of medical treatment. An ancient Chinese text from 2700 B.C. recommends massage as a cure for a wide variety of ailments; depictions of Egyptian pharaohs show them receiving massages; Julius Caesar received a daily massage for a pain condition. Massage requires a certain level of physical intimacy between practitioner and patient, and it's important for the health of both parties to maintain a sanitary environment.

The Room

    Performing a sanitary massage starts well before the person who is receiving the massage walks in the door. Keep the room where you'll be giving your massage clean and spare. Try to avoid heavy fabric drapes or thick carpeting, as these may trap dirt, dust, and allergens.

    Make sure your massage table is flat and smooth. Wash all towels and linens on the table between each client with hot water and soap.

    Some massage therapists choose to use aromatherapy candles, incense, or other fragrances in the room as they give a massage. This is a personal choice, and many therapists find that it helps their client relax. But some people may be allergic to certain ingredients in these candles, and besides, not everyone likes the same scents. As a rule of thumb, the best smell is often no smell at all.

The Massage

    The massage therapist should take a number of precautions to ensure a sanitary massage. First, apply hand sanitizer before you begin the massage, or just wash your hands very thoroughly with hot water and soap. The plant is sometimes referred to as "scaldhead," referring to its use in treating scalding burns of the skin. The berries and plant can be eaten raw or dried to obtain its medicinal benefits.

    Harvest the blackberry fruit and plant. Pick berries from plants that have uniformly black, dull berries. Blackberries are shiny when almost mature but begin to dull when they reach full maturity; the most benefit can be had from the fully mature berries. After picking the berries from the plant, harvest it by digging and pulling it out from the root. Collect the berries in a shallow container so that the berries do not get mashed during collection.

    Dry the berries and plant. Although the berries can be eaten raw to get the benefit of their antioxidant and phytonutrient content, drying the berries and other parts of the plant will enable them to be prepared in tinctures, infusions and poultices.
