Alternative Psoriasis Treatment

Psoriasis is a skin condition identified by red, scaly elevated lesions, usually on the elbows, knees, torso and scalp. Periods of acute episodes generally are followed by periods of remission. The condition is caused by the rapid division of skin cells. New cells appear rapidly, and old cells build up and are not shed properly. Many people who suffer from this psoriasis have a relative who does, too, suggesting a genetic link. Sluggish bowels that do not properly eliminate toxins and emotional stress also can trigger a flare up. Many natural treatments can help control and prevent flare-ups.

Herbal Treaments

Herbs and pharmaceutical agents are assigned doses based on one of their most important pharmacological properties, therapeutic range. This is the smallest dose that has any medicinal effect and the largest dose safe for consumption. Herbs are generally nontoxic, and overdose or serious complications are unlikely. However, stick to suggested doses as taking more is unlikely to produce additional benefit and can cause negative side effects. Unless otherwise noted, use as directed on product labels. Herbs are generally gentler than pharmaceutical agents and therefore could take longer to achieve full effect, so consistent, proper use is necessary for maximum benefit.

External Herbs

Aloe gel soothes inflamed skin and prevents infections. Andiroba and copaiba oil give quick relief and speed up the healing process. Cayenne, in the form of a capsaicin cream, alleviates pain. Chamomile cream is very effective at relieving inflammation. Lavender stops pain. Add 2 ounces of the herb to a quart of water and let sit overnight. Bathe the affected areas. Marshmallow cream provides a protective layer against infection.

Internal Herbs

Use barberry, coptis, goldenseal, or Oregon grape root to remove toxins from the bowel. Take 250 to 500 milligrams three times a day. Dong quai is effective at reducing inflammation when taken at the start of an episode. Take 500 milligrams daily. Milk thistle can reduce the number of outbreaks. Take 120 milligrams three times a day. Sarsparilla extract moves intestinal toxins out of the body. Take 1 to 2 teaspoons three times a day.

Considerations for Herbal Treatments

Do not use cayenne on broken skin and be sure to keep it away from the eyes and mouth. Do not use barberry, coptis, goldenseal or Oregon grape root if you are suffering from gallbladder disease, are pregnant or for longer than two weeks at a time. Milk thistle can cause mild diarrhea.

Other Suggestions

Add omega 3 fats to your diet to inhibit inflammation. Eat foods high in fiber to increase absorption of toxins that get passed through the stool. Do not drink alcohol; it increases the amount of toxins absorbed from the intestine. Applying seawater to affected areas throughout the day can help clear up lesions. Expose affected skin to sunlight at least 15 to 20 minutes a day to boost synthesizing of vitamin D, which helps slow the multiplication of skin cells. Vitamin D creams can be effective as well.

Bentonite Clay Detox

Colon health is imperative because if waste becomes clogged in this organ it will back up into the body. This may overload the body with toxins and make you ill. The digestive system naturally cleans the area to keep it functioning properly. Unfortunately, which the availability of junk food full of preservatives in our fast-paced world, there is too much stress put on the body and colon. Trying a detoxification to help the colon eliminate excess waste is safe and effective if you drink ample water to keep yourself hydrated.

Bentonite Clay

Bentonite clay can be used as an effective colon cleanser. Consuming clay will eliminate toxins and other indigestible matter built up in the colon over time. The clay sucks the toxins up like a sponge and then passes though the body. This method has been around for over thousands of years in some African, South American, and Australian cultures. These people found natural clay in the soils and ingested them to increase their health, because they realized it made them feel better.

Detox

Purchase liquid calcium bentonite clay which can be found online, or from an alternative medicine practitioner. Each morning, before you eat anything, orally consume 1 tbsp. of the clay mixed with applesauce. The applesauce makes it easier to go down. Use organic applesauce for increased health benefits. Drink at least 8 cups of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. After a week you can increase the dose to 2 tbsp. After two weeks, if combined with a healthy lifestyle, you should feel a marked improvement in your health and well-being. You may have more energy, sleep better, and your bowel movements should become regular.

More Benefits to Clay Detox

Bentonite clay is an alkaline substance. When ingested, the clay neutralizes the body's acidity, reducing heartburn and stomach ulcers. Clay will absorb and help the body expel internal parasites and metals in the bloodstream, in addition to toxins.

Bentonite clay can also be made into a paste with an adhesive substance. Try honey because it has additional skin benefits, and apply the paste over the entire body. The clay may work to absorb toxins through the pores of the epidermis. Try this paste after opening pores in a hot bath or sauna.

How to Use Cranberry to Prevent Kidney Stones

How to Use Cranberry to Prevent Kidney Stones

Kidney stones can be so painful they can cause sufferers to pass out. They usually require medical treatment, but you can save yourself the bother by taking preventative measures with natural substances like cranberry.

Instructions

    1

Use cranberry juice to reduce the amount of calcium in the urine. Since the major cause of kidney stones is excess calcium with either phosphate or oxalate, reducing calcium lowers the potential for stone formation.

    2

Drink two 8-oz. glasses of cranberry juice every day to prevent the buildup of kidney stones. The amount may need to be adjusted according to the amount of cranberry concentrate in the mixture. Ask your health care provider for a treatment regimen for you.

    3

Use fresh cranberries to prevent kidney stones if there is a family history of forming either calcium or non-calcium (struvite) stones. Cranberry supplements are available in juice or capsules at health stores and online.

    4

Take cranberry for the acidic benefit. The quinic acid in cranberries produces a slightly acidic urine that will prevent phosphate joining with calcium to form stones.

    5

Drink cranberry juice to decrease oxalate and phosphate excretion.

    6

Expect citrate excretion to increase with the intake of cranberry supplements

    7

Drink cranberry tea as a tasty alternative to cranberry juice.

    8

Combine 5 oz. cranberry juice, 5 oz. grape juice, 1 cup frozen mixed fruit, 1/2 of a banana and 1/4 cup plain yogurt in a blender for a delicious and nutritional cranberry smoothie.

    9

Add cranberry to your diet with a cranberry fruit dip. Combine one 8-oz. carton of vanilla yogurt, 1/2 cup cranberry-orange relish, 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg and 1/4 tsp. ground ginger. Serve chilled with fruit slices.

Seaweed Benefits

Seaweed Benefits

Seaweed, or kelp, is useful in a number of ways. Ingesting it offers great health benefits, and beauty products made from seaweed are less damaging to skin than traditional chemicals. Seaweed is an excellent source of minerals, making it a healthy addition to a balanced diet.

Types

There are several kinds of seaweed used in various ways to promote health. Kelp is used to promote healthy skin and can also be eaten, providing a source of minerals and salt. Crushed algae is often used in facial masks and creams.

Carrageenan is an Irish seaweed that is frequently used as a thickening agent in cosmetic creams. Bladder wrack, or Fucus vesiculosus, is found in many cellulite-reducing creams.

Effects

Ingesting seaweed provides numerous vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, B1, B2, B6, C, niacin, iodine, iron, zinc calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium and trace amounts of B12.

Seaweed helps with the health of skin and hair in particular as a result of its high amounts of vitamins and minerals, but it also acts as a cleanser for the body as well as assisting in the regulation of hormones.

Benefits

In addition to providing vitamins and minerals, seaweed also improves the circulation of blood and lymph, contributes to the moisturizing of skin and helps detoxify skin.

Many of the benefits of seaweed are cosmetic, but the same vitamins and minerals that contribute to the beauty benefits of seaweed will also assist in maintaining overall health, including by reducing allergies.

Sources of Seaweed

Seaweed products are often ingested, but they are as frequently found in cosmetic products. Sushi, certain types of salad and many Asian recipes use seaweed as central ingredients. Using seaweed in recipes is an inexpensive way to incorporate it into a diet.

Seaweed products can be bought specifically from sources that specialize in its production. Irish Seaweed Cosmetics and other similar companies make an effort to produce high quality cosmetics using seaweed.

Considerations

When making any diet or cosmetic changes, consult a doctor first. Although seaweed allergies are rare, they do occur. Certain recipes that include seaweed as a seasoning or a main ingredient have been known to cause reactions in people with severe food allergies.

The Side Effects of Chitosan Health Products

The Side Effects of Chitosan Health Products

Chitosan, a type of sugar extracted from the exoskeletons of shrimp, lobster and other shellfish, has a history of use for wound healing, gum disease, Crohn's disease, weight loss and high cholesterol. WebMD notes most of these uses have insufficient evidence to support chitosan's efficacy. While generally considered safe, certain circumstances preclude this sugar's use, and it does carry the risk of certain side effects.

Allergic Reaction

A patient with an allergy to shellfish might experience an allergic reaction to this supplement. The allergy, however, stems from the actual fish and not the shell, so whether or not chitosan would trigger this same reaction definitively has not been established. WebMD notes some medical experts doubt that it would prove problematic. If you have a shellfish allergy, talk to your doctor before supplementing and be on the lookout for signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling, itching, hives, watery eyes and trouble breathing.

Side Effects

Noted side effects appear to be of the gastrointestinal variety. Possible reactions include constipation, gas and gastrointestinal upset. Chitosan might also inhibit your body's ability to absorb the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K.

Pregnancy and Breast-feeding

Whether or not you can safely use this supplement during pregnancy or breast-feeding has not been determined. Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center cautions against use due to its potential to block the absorption of nutrients necessary for a healthy pregnancy. In these instances, avoiding chitosan supplementation appears to be in your best interest.

Medication Interactions

Chitosan supplements might slow the amount of time it takes for blood to clot. You should not use this supplement if you are currently taking blood-thinning medications like Coumadin.

What Are the Health Benefits of Dead Sea Salts?

What Are the Health Benefits of Dead Sea Salts?

The waters and salts of the land-locked Dead Sea have been used for various therapies for thousands of years. The sea is fed by the Jordan River and other rivers flowing out of the nearby mountains. The waters carry salts. Since the Dead Sea has no outlet, those salts have accumulated in the Dead Sea over the millennia. It is the salts of the Dead Sea that are believed to have healthful benefits for humans.

Skin Conditions

Dead Sea salts contain minerals--including sulfur, chlorine, iodine, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium and bromine--that are helpful in alleviating many skin conditions, including atopic dermatitis or eczema, psoriasis and acne. According to the website Salt Works, the salts relieve the severe itching of atopy or eczema early on in the treatment, which generally lasts about six weeks. While no cure for psoriasis exists, treatment with Dead Sea salts relieves the symptoms of the disease. Treatment for acne often uses sulfur, so the sulfur in Dead Sea salts can be helpful in cleansing the skin.

Aging

Dry skin and wrinkles are common signs of aging. Bathing in Dead Sea salts can help relieve dry skin because the high mineral content of the salts aids in cleansing and replaces electrolytes, according to Salt Works. Research has shown that treatment with Dead Sea salts can reduce the depth of wrinkles by up to 40 percent.

Arthritis

Research at Dead Sea spas and other facilities has shown that applying mud infused with Dead Sea salts is helpful in relieving the stiffness and pain of various forms of arthritis. Salt Works attributes the effectiveness of Dead Sea salts to the minerals' ability to improve blood circulation, help detoxify the body and work as a muscle relaxant. Heating improves their effectiveness in treating arthritic conditions.

Cellulite

Dead Sea salts can help remove toxins from the body and improve circulation, which will not cure cellulite, but can help reduce its appearance, according to Salt Works.

Stress

Dead Sea salts and mud packs relieve the symptoms of stress by improving circulation and detoxifying the body from the byproducts of stress, or stress hormones, according to Salt Works. In addition, bathing in Dead Sea salts induces relaxation and promotes restful sleep.

Headaches and Migraines

The website Seacret maintains that Dead Sea salts have been credited with stopping headaches and migraines and reducing stress and sleeplessness.

How to Eliminate Age Spots Using Home Remedies

How to Eliminate Age Spots Using Home Remedies

As we age, our skin wrinkles and age spots can appear. The problem is, age spots are not only caused by natural aging. The spots can also be caused by the sun. Age spots can be a sign of skin cancer caused by the sun if they are not treated or eliminated properly. There are many different ways to eliminate age spots by using simple, effective home remedies.

Instructions

    1

Use a good natural sunscreen. Sunscreen can prevent age spots in the first place by protecting your skin from the sun. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher for best results in preventing and getting rid of age spots.

    2

Chop or grind an onion in a blender and use a strainer to extract the juice from the onion. Mix one part of apple cider vinegar and one part of onion juice together. Take a cotton pad and dab the vinegar and onion juice directly to your skin where the age spots are. Do this once per day for six weeks or until the age spots are gone.

    3

Rub aloe vera juice or gel onto the age spots twice a day. You should see results of the aloe vera working within a month. If you do not see any results, keep applying the aloe vera until you do. Aloe vera is a natural healing product for skin.

    4

Dab some fresh lemon juice directly onto the age spots twice a day or until the age spots are gone. Lemon juice is a natural way to eliminate age spots and other skin ailments. If you plan to go outside after using the lemon juice on your skin, wait until it dries because lemon juice can make the skin more sensitive to the sun. The lemon juice should eliminate the age spots within two months.

    5

Rub some Castor oil onto the age spots once in the morning and again in the evening. Castor oil should eliminate the age spots within a month.

    6

Apply some Vitamin E oil directly on the age spots every day to fade the age spots and eliminate them.

Problems Using Tea Tree Oil

Problems Using Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is derived from an Australian native tree the Melaleuca alternifolia, a member of the myrtle family. Tea tree oil is commonly used for skin and nail bacterial, fungal or viral infections. Tea tree oil contains 100 bio-active components. Terpinen-4-ol in tea tree oil causes antimicrobial activity and suppresses an inflammatory mediator. However, tea tree oil should be used with care as a number of problems have been reported.

Allergy

Tea tree oil is found in a number of commercial products, but tea tree oil can cause an allergic reaction in some patients. An Australian study published in 2007 in " The Australasian Journal of Dermatology" showed that 1.8 percent of patients had a positive patch test to oxidized tea tree oil, with 20 percent previously having used neat tea tree oil prior to the reaction. It is thought that the allergic reaction may be due to either contaminants or oxidation products.

Antibiotic Resistance

Tea tree oil is known to have a broad antimicrobial activity. This antimicrobial activity also includes bacteria such as MRSA and E.coli. A study by Ann McMahon and colleagues in 2007 and published in "Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy" showed that though tea tree oil is an effective antimicrobial agent, inappropriate low concentrations of tea tree oil may contribute to antibiotic resistance in human pathogens.

Toxicity

Tea tree oil is toxic if swallowed, both for humans and pets. Case studies have shown that if tea tree oil if swallowed it can lead to neurological problems, vomiting, drowsiness and possibly coma. Data has shown that tea tree oil can be toxic in cats and dogs, particularly if the product is used incorrectly. Cats appear to be able to absorb tea tree oil through their skin causing toxicity, though they may absorb the oil while grooming. There is no known antidote to tea tree oil with the only treatment being supportive care.

Pregnancy and Hormones

The National Institute of Health indicates that there is no evidence that tea tree oil is safe either during pregnancy or childbirth. Tea tree oil may interfere with the strength of contractions and should therefore be avoided during child birth. A study published in "The New England Journal of Medicine" in 2007 described three cases where young boys had developed breasts, or gynecomastia, after using commercially available products containing lavender oil with tea tree oil. The study found that both lavender oil and tea tree oil altered the boys' sex hormones levels.

Remedies to Increase Sexual Desire

Decreased interest in sex can affect men and women. For some people, it is an issue throughout their lives while others might only start to experience it in midlife. This lack of interest can stem from many things. Hormonal imbalances, especially in testosterone levels of both men and women, can affect the sex drive. Additionally, trauma, depression, boredom and the use of drugs, including anti-depressants, tranquilizers, sedatives and certain types of blood pressure medication, can affect interest in sex. There are many natural treatments to help increase sexual desire.

Herbal Treatments

The following herbal supplements can assist with a diminished sex drive by raising testosterone levels and increasing desire. Unless specific dosages are stated, take as directed on the product label.
For men: Avena tincture, chrysin capsules, muira puama tincture and Asian ginseng tablets will raise testosterone levels. Ashwagandha stimulates the male sex drive and can prevent premature ejaculations.
For women: Pine pollen, damiana tincture, and star anise tea stimulate testosterone production in women.
For men and women: Siberian ginseng tincture boosts testosterone and balances the production of dopamine in the brain. Tribulus terrestis also increases levels. Kava tablets and passionflower tea are both mild relaxants that can help release inhibition. Yohimbe and sasparilla tinctures are aphrodisiacs.
Herbs and pharmaceutical agents are assigned suggested doses based on one of their most important pharmacological properties: therapeutic range. Therapeutic range is the smallest dose that provides any medicinal benefit up to the largest dose that is safe for consumption. Herbs are generally nontoxic and serious complications or overdose is unlikely. Stick to suggested amounts because taking more is not likely to produce additional benefit and can potentially cause negative side effects.

Other Suggestions

The amino acid L-arginine helps create nitrous oxide, which is vital to erections and increasing blood flow to the vagina. It is found in chocolate, peanuts, almonds and other nuts. The amino acid L-tyrosine is used to make dopamine in the brain. Stay away from beer. It contains hops, which are similar to estrogen. Years of regular consumption can lead to diminished sex drive in both sexes. There can be a strong mental component to decreased sex drive. Make an effort to reduce stress and seek counseling for any issues that are causing mental distress, sexual or otherwise.

How to Control Cholesterol Using Home Remedies

How to Control Cholesterol Using Home Remedies

There are two types of cholesterol, bad cholesterol, LDL, and good cholesterol, HDL. Good cholesterol is the type our body makes, and the bad cholesterol is the type we add to the good when we eat things we shouldn't. LDL cholesterol clogs arteries and is better at the lowest levels. HDL is naturally made in our bodies and is better at higher levels. There is prescription medication that a doctor can prescribe if we have too much of the bad cholesterol, and it is not recommended to replace that medication with home remedies. However, there are good and inexpensive things we can do at home to keep the cholesterol under control. These home remedies can be used with the prescribed medications to help keep good cholesterol under control and keep bad cholesterol away.

Instructions

Using Home Remedies to Control Cholesterol

    1

Take at least 400 international units of Vitamin E everyday to keep the good cholesterol under control and to keep the bad cholesterol from building up. Taking Vitamin E will keep cholesterol from forming into plaque that can clog arteries and cause a heart attack. Take Vitamin E every day along with your prescribed cholesterol medication.

    2

Stock up on Vitamin C and take it regularly. People who have high levels of Vitamin C in their diet tend to have high HDL numbers.

    3

Eat about seven cloves of garlic every day or take an odorless garlic capsule every day to keep LDL cholesterol low and HDL cholesterol high. Most people find taking a garlic capsule every day is easier than eating 7 cloves of garlic every day.

    4

Eat a few grapes every day or drink some grape juice. The skin of grapes can help keep cholesterol under control.

    5

Eat at least 1 grapefruit sections every day to lower your bad cholesterol. People who eat grapefruit every day can lower their cholesterol by 7 percent in just two months. Grapefruit is just one of many different fruits that include cholesterol-lowering pectin.

    6

Add beans to your diet as often as you can. Kidney beans, lima beans, navy beans, soybeans and other legumes can help keep your cholesterol under control. Just by eating 1 cups of beans everyday you can lower your bad cholesterol by 22 percent. You dont have to eat that much, but the more beans you eat as often as you can will help keep your cholesterol under control. Beans are another food that contain cholesterol-lowering pectin.

Alternatives to the EpiPen

Alternatives to the EpiPen

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that can be life-threatening. Swelling of the throat, hives and trouble breathing are signs of an anaphylactic reaction. EpiPen auto-injectors contain epinephrine and are designed to use in an emergency to counteract an allergic response--it is not a substitute for medical treatment. Alternative treatments can be utilized to minimize and help prevent allergic symptoms. Always consult your physician prior to using any medications.

Antihistamines

Antihistamines are used to treat allergic reactions. Generally, most antihistamines are readily available and can be purchased over-the-counter. Though they are effective, they typically have strong side effects. First-generation antihistamines such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and Chlor-Trimeton (chlorpheniramine) can cause drowsiness, which can make it inconvenient to take the medicine on a regular basis. Second-generation antihistamines such as Allegra (fexofenadine) and Zyrtec (cetirizine) can also cause mild sedation and other side effects, although they come in a longer-lasting formula, which can make them easier to take regularly than first-generation antihistamines.

Leukotriene Modifiers

According to Family Health, "Leukotrienes are chemicals in the body that cause airway constriction, excess mucus production, and inflammation and swelling in the lungs." Leukotriene modifiers are used to help prevent these and other symptoms commonly associated with allergies and asthma. Oral medications such as Singulair (montelukast) are taken in daily doses. Beneficial effects of leukotriene modifiers can be seen within hours; however, the anti-inflammatory effects and symptom prevention can take up to a week or in some cases a month. As with all medications, it is important to follow the directions from your physician to achieve optimum results when using leukotriene modifiers, with as few side effects as possible.

Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy consists of receiving allergy injections as a way of altering the body's immune system response. Injections contain a small amount of a given allergen, in doses that gradually increase over a period of time. The idea is build up a tolerance to the allergen. Although this treatment option is effective over several years, there is no guarantee that an allergic reaction will never occur again. The dosage amount, interval injection times and duration of therapy depend upon the type and severity of the allergen. Because doses of the actual allergen are given, immunotherapy may not be ideal for certain individuals with severe reactions. According to Disabled World, this type of therapy should only be administered in facilities that are equipped with epinephrine, CPR aids and intravenous corticosteroids. Patients must remain under physician surveillance for a minimum of 20 minutes after injections are administered. High-risk patients require extended surveillance time.

How to Know the Best Way to Lose Weight With Herbs

How to Know the Best Way to Lose Weight With Herbs

Weight loss can be tricky. The formula is pretty simple: Eat a healthy diet, exercise, and don't consume too many calories. But what happens if you've been doing these things but are not getting the results you expect? Herbs can help out a lot.

Note: Depending on the herbs you choose they can help your body burn fat, boost your metabolism, and keep your liver healthy. The herbs listed below are not diet aids. They simply help strengthen the body's natural ability to lose weight. They are also not stimulating like some of the "diet herbs" on the market.

If you are looking for a guide to help you detox, this is NOT it. If you want something that will help you lose weight quickly, again, you will not find that info in this article.

Too many people try to find the quick way out. They spend years abusing their bodies and eating food that is bad for them. They neglect their bodies and continue to not exercise. Instead, they want to undo years of abuse by taking a supplement that will crash the weight off. This is just MORE abuse.

You will NEVER find that kind of information in an article that I write. This is not a healthy mindset and I will never advocate those methods. My goal is to help you get healthy. Period.

So if you read the steps below and feel disappointed that I'm telling you to take herbs that will gently get your body back in balance and will help aid you in a normal, healthy weight loss schedule - perhaps it's time for a change of mentality? If you want to lose weight it is NOT an overnight process.

My advice would be to really think about your habits and your lifestyle. Make the changes that you need and then choose one or two of the herbs listed below that will gently help your body be as healthy as possible. This WILL translate to weight loss.

Instructions

    1

Choose one of the herbs listed below to try. Add 1 tsp. of the herb to hot water (or one tea bag). Let steep for ten minutes and then remove the tea bag or strain the herb. Drink two to three cups a day.

    2

A healthy liver helps your body process the extra fat and eliminate it. To stimulate your liver try dandelion root, burdock root, yellow dock root or dandelion leaves.

    3

Traditional tea is also a good weight loss aid. White tea and green tea are the best, but black tea and oolong tea will work as well. They come from the sample plant, they're just dried differently.

    4

Some herbs really help fire up your metabolism, which helps you burn more calories. These herbs include ginger, cayenne pepper, and cinnamon.

    5

Excess stress can really take a toll on your body and cause you to gain weight. You can help manage your stress by using herbs such as lemon balm, chamomile, and oatstraw.

The Germ-Killing Characteristics of Vinegar

The Germ-Killing Characteristics of Vinegar

Having been around for more than 10,000 years, vinegar is not only useful in the kitchen but throughout the entire home. As the Vinegar Institute states, what started as wine that had gone sour turned into a substance that could be made from many different fruits, vegetables and grains. With its nutritional and cleaning properties, vinegar has become a staple in many households.

Chemical Reactions of Vinegar

The acidic smell and taste of vinegar is given off by the elements that make the liquid an excellent disinfectant. According to apple-cider-vinegar-benefits.com, vinegar is created through two fermentation processes. The first is alcoholic fermentation, where sugars are turned into alcohol. The second is acid fermentation, where the alcohol is turned into a germ-killing acid.

Vinegar Vs. Dangerous Germs

According to a study completed by the University of Florida and found in the National Center of Biotechnology Information, the acidic elements of vinegar were found to be successful in killing E coli, Salmonella and the poliovirus. In the study, viruses found in strawberries were reduced by a calculated 90 percent to 95 percent when using a vinegar rinse.

Vinegar Vs. Mold

Due to its acidic nature, vinegar is a natural substance that can kill mold or other fungi found in the home. According to the WebMd article, "Ready to Make Your Home and Yard More Eco-Friendly?" store-bought vinegar's 5 percent acidic concentrate is ideal for killing molds by spraying the vinegar directly on the problem areas.

Vinegar Vs. Lice

By rinsing the scalp with vinegar, it is possible to kill lice. The Head Lice Center indicates that the acetic acid found in vinegar can break up the shells of lice eggs and the sticky substance that keeps eggs attached to the scalp. After shampooing, rinse the hair with vinegar and then comb through the hair to remove eggs.

How to Make a Stress Controlling Tea

Sometimes, when I'm under stress and much busier than usual and my mind gets flooded with a to-do list-I can write down the tasks I need to accomplish and then I feel better. But other times, I actually need something extra. On days like these I make a tea blend that is designed to help give me a gentle amount of energy (but not in a caffeinated way) while calming down my nervous system. Here is how to prepare this special blend-for when you, too-are experiencing these same kinds of days.

* Note: it is assumed that all the herbs in this blend will be dried.

Instructions

    1

Shop for the highest quality herbs that you can find. Look for an organic or wildcrafted source that is also known for its quality. I like Mountain Rose Herbs (see link in Resources below).

    2

Add all the herbs to a small mixing bowl and stir gently. Be careful not to press down on the herbs; handle them gently. Your goal is to stir without crushing them.

    3

Transfer the herbs to a storage container. Use an airtight glass jar (preferably amber colored to also prevent light from coming through) or you can use a zippered plastic bag or plastic container. Make sure to store the herbs away from heat and light.

    4

To brew a cup of the tea, use 1 teaspoon of the blend for each cup of boiling water and steep for 5 to 10 minutes. Remove the herb once it's done steeping. You may sweeten it with honey or stevia. Try to avoid sugar because it isn't good for you and could affect your natural energy level by causing a "sugar crash."

Fish Oil for Menopause

Menopause causes a variety of changes in the body. These changes produce unpleasant symptoms as well as increase the risk for certain health problems. Fish oil might be beneficial for certain problems associated with this change of life.

Heart Health

Menopausal women are at greater risk for heart problems. Fish oil is known for its heart-health benefits and specifically its ability to lower LDL (bad cholesterol) levels. This reduces the risk of heart disease and heart attack.

Hot Flashes

Lower levels of estrogen during menopause affect the production of certain chemicals in the body known as eicosanoids and arachidonic acid; imbalances in production trigger hot flashes. Fish oil restores the balance and can ease this uncomfortable symptom.

Bone Loss

Fish oil can inhibit the production of chemicals that trigger bone loss, which is another problem caused by changing hormone levels.

Eating Fish

Eating fish can offer benefits as well; include fish in your diet at least twice a week.

Talk to Your Doctor

Talk with your doctor before using fish oil supplements, especially if you are taking blood-thinning medications like Coumadin or using aspirin therapy. Achieving benefits from supplementation requires taking large doses--at least several thousand milligrams daily. Work with an experienced healthcare provider to determine an effective dosage for you.

How to Naturally Regrow Lost Hair

People use medication such as Propecia and Rogaine to try to promote the growth of hair. But hair growth can be accomplished through natural medicines without having to resort to pharmaceutical medications.

Instructions

    1

Maintain iron levels in your blood. Take non-prescription iron supplements that you can find at a health food store. Your blood cells utilize iron to bring oxygen to your scalp, helping it regrow hair. You can also consume foods rich in iron, along with the iron supplements, including lentils and bran flakes.

    2

Add a high amount of protein to your diet. Your hair and hair follicles are mostly made of protein. When your body lacks protein, rapid hair loss can occur. Eat foods rich in protein such as tofu, beans, broccoli and wheat bread in order to hasten hair regrowth.

    3

Drink at least 11 glasses of water daily. An increase in water intake flushes out harmful bacteria and toxins via your urine. As you drink more water, your body spends less energy to remove toxins. As a result, it can focus on your scalp and aid in hair regrowth.

    4

Take vitamin B6 capsules. Vitamin B6 is known to maintain nails, skin and hair. The recommended dosage is 100mg to be taken once a day, preferably with meals.

    5

Buy a laser comb. This high-quality product is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use on hair regrowth. The laser in the comb acts by stimulating your hair follicles to enhance hair growth. See Resources below.

The Advantages of Nano Silver Treatment for AIDS

The Advantages of Nano Silver Treatment for AIDS

HIV is believed to be the virus that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Combinations of strong pharmaceutical drugs are often prescribed to delay or prevent the onset of the disease in HIV-infected patients. At the same time, several less risky alternative treatments have been explored, including the use of tiny nano particles of silver suspended in water. A nanometer is one billionth of a meter.

History

Silver has a long history of use in medicine and fighting bacteria. As early as 1000 B.C. it was known that water resists biological contamination if stored in silver vessels. The Macedonian soldiers of Alexander the Great pressed silver onto open wounds to prevent infection and speed healing. American pioneers placed a silver dollar in their milk jugs to keep it fresh longer. In the invasion of Iraq, U.S. troops used gauze bandages lined with silver. Colloids of nano-sized silver particles can deliver the benefits of silver directly to the cells of AIDS patients.

Benefits

The primary benefit of nano silver, as opposed to other colloidal silver preparations, is increased surface area of the smaller particles, which boosts their reactivity. Perhaps even more importantly, the small size of the particles prevents them from becoming lodged in internal tissue, and creating toxicity or discoloration.

Function

The way nano-silver helps in AIDS treatment is that it interferes with the ability of the HIV-virus to bond to host cells and thus replicate itself. Researchers believe this is because the tiny silver particles bond to the gp120 lipoprotein on HIV-1. The size of the particles are considered important because none of the particles that effectively inhibited HIV in the leading study were larger than 10 nanometers.

Effects

It is often claimed that nano silver has beneficial effects on the human immune system. While it's true that most people who take nano silver report improved health and strong immune function, the direct connection between nano silver and the immune system remains elusive. It is likely, instead, that the silver particles reduce the workload of the immune system by combating bacteria and viruses the body's natural defenses would otherwise have to confront.

Features

Colloids of nano silver are crystal clear, like the water with which they're made, and cannot be harmed by direct light as other colloids can. Also, the extremely small size of the silver particles allows them to remain permanently in suspension, never separating out or needed to be shaken.

Alternative Treatment for Childhood Leukemia

Leukemia is a form of cancer characterized by the abnormal production of white blood cells. Ninety percent of children suffer from acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), a form which progresses rapidly. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, a natural treatment strategy includes a combination of herbs, homeopathy, nutritional supplements, diet and acupuncture. These treatments are best used in combination with standard therapies.

Important Treatment Information

Leukemia is a very complex cancer with treatment hinging on several factors. You should work with a treatment center and/or a doctor experienced in dealing with this particular form of cancer. Using alternative therapies in cancer treatment is controversial. Many doctors do not believe they are effective and that, in some cases, they can even interfere with standard treatments. If you are interested in using natural therapies as part of your child's treatment regimen, your best bet is to work with a doctor who is open to and knowledgeable about natural therapies. You should always let your doctor know about any supplements or treatment modalities you are using in addition to conventional cancer care. Consult a doctor to determine appropriate children's dosages of any supplements mentioned below.

Nutritional Supplements and Herbs

A daily multivitamin can ensure adequate intake of the most important vitamins and minerals. Probiotics can boost immunity and promote gastrointestinal health, both of which can be compromised by conventional cancer treatments. Omega-3 fatty acids, like those found in fish oil, decrease inflammation. Vitamin C provides antioxidant support. L-theanine supports the nervous system.

Green tea, reishi mushroom and olive leaf extract provide anticancer effects and enhance immunity. You can use green tea either in capsule or tea form, while reishi mushroom is available in capsules or a liquid extract. Olive leaf is commonly available in tablet or capsule form. Milk thistle helps the liver filter out toxins and other harmful substances; use capsules or tablets. Milk thistle might cause mild diarrhea when first used.

Homeopathy

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, there is not a lot of research examining the use of homeopathy in treating cancer. Homeopathic treatments are based on a variety of individual factors, such as personality traits and other health problems, in addition to the main condition being treated. If you are interested in integrating homeopathic therapies, you should consult with a professional homeopath. The university recommends the following remedy to deal with the side effects of radiation treatment. Radium bromatum can ease side effects of radiation treatment, especially if it is accompanied by feelings of arthritis.

Diet

A healthy diet is a cornerstone of any alternative therapy regimen. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables which are rich in antioxidants and other cancer-fighting substances. Berries and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower are especially good. Cook with healthy oils like olive and canola. Eliminate refined foods like white pastas and breads as well as sugar. Reduce consumption of red meat and aim for healthier protein sources like soy, beans and coldwater fish.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture might not be able to treat the leukemia directly, but its positive action against the side effects of conventional cancer treatments is well documented. It can relieve things like fatigue, nausea and pain. Be sure to see a licensed acupuncturist.

Grape-Seed-Oil Health Benefits

The health benefits of grape-seed oil have been known for over 6,000 years. The ancient Greeks and Egyptians consumed large quantities of the fruit, mostly in the form of wine. The health properties primarily come from the seed of the grape; the benefits range from skin care to lowering cholesterol, fighting cancer and alleviating symptoms of asthma.

Lowers Cholesterol

Grape-seed oil helps to keep your arteries clear by reducing the "bad cholesterol" levels known as LDL, and increasing the HDL levels, known as "good cholesterol." Additionally, grape-seed oil has been known to prevent the oxidation of bad cholesterol from being deposited on the blood-vessel walls and reducing dangerous triglyceride levels.

Skin Care

Grape-seed oil contains many antioxidant compounds that help protect the skin from premature aging. Antioxidants are substances in the body that destroy free radicals that damage certain compounds in the body. Grape-seed oil helps protect the skin from sun damage as well as containing healing properties to alleviate acne, varicose veins and stretch marks The high levels of Vitamin E found in grape seed oil also aid in keeping the skin firm, toned and smooth.

Fights Cancer

Grape-seed extract may prevent cancerous cells from growing in specific parts of the body such as the stomach, colon, breast, prostate and lung. Additionally, grape-seed oil may prevent damage to cells caused by chemotherapy treatment and medication. The powerful antioxidant properties found in grape-seed oil prove to be beneficial in cancer prevention.

Asthma Treatment

Grape-seed oil can also be used in the homeopathic treatment of asthma. The oil can help reduce inflammation of the airways, and the antioxidants help to inhibit mucus-production in the lungs. Additionally, grape-seed oil can help control the allergic reactions and triggers that may prompt an asthma attack since it is known to suppress the production of histamine which occurs during an allergy attack.

Cooking

Grape-seed oil can withstand very high heat which makes it a great choice to use for cooking or as an olive-oil substitute. The oil can also be used as salad dressing or marinade and is high in linolenic acid, which is essential for healthy blood and oxygen circulation to the body's vital organs.

Natural Remedies for Frequent Urination

Natural Remedies for Frequent Urination

If you have a problem with frequent urination, you're probably frustrated by and tired of your frequent trips to the bathroom. Frequent urination can interfere with a person's social life. It can be embarrassing and inconvenient in public. Experiencing frequent urination usually means there is an underlying medical problem, which possibly may need medical attention. If you choose to try a natural approach instead, you might find a remedy that works for you.

Causes

One common reason for frequent urination is a urinary tract infection (UTI). UTIs develop when bacteria attach to the opening of the urethra and multiply. When this happens, the bladder is unable to hold the urine. Cystitis is another possible cause of frequent urination. Cystitis occurs when the bladder becomes inflamed. Other causes of frequent urination are diabetes, excess fluid intake, certain medications or pregnancy.

Symptoms

Symptoms of frequent urination include an urge to urinate more than usual, discomfort in the bladder and a burning sensation when urinating. You may still feel like you need to urinate even after you've just gone. These symptoms may worsen during the night, when your body is more relaxed. Frequent urination can cause sleep disturbances in some people. Although men experience frequent urination, it is more common in women, according to the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse.

Remedies

Frequent urination can often be treated at home, using natural remedies. Drinking cranberry juice can reduce UTIs, which can cause frequent urination. According to a research that was conducted by researchers at Harvard Medical School, women who drank 10 ounces of cranberry juice each day reduced the chance of having bacteria in their urine by 58 percent. Another natural remedy for frequent urination is plain yogurt. Plain yogurt contains Lactobacillus acidophilus, which helps prevent the growth of harmful bacteria in the bladder.

Benefits

There are many benefits of using natural remedies for frequent urination. You reduce the chance of side effects that would normally be associated with taking prescription medications. Natural remedies are cheaper than prescription or over-the-counter medications. Most natural remedies are already in the home, so there is no need to spend additional money. Another benefit of using natural remedies for frequent urination is that you can receive other health benefits from using them.

Prevention/Solution

Some things can be done to prevent frequent urination. Train the bladder by doing Kegel exercises daily. Kegel exercises are performed by contracting your pelvic floor muscles for 5 seconds and then relaxing the muscles for 5 seconds. This should be done at least 10 times in 1 round, then repeating each round 3 times daily. By doing Kegel exercises, the pelvic floor muscles will strengthen and reduce frequent urination. Avoid drinking too much alcohol and caffeine beverages such as coffee and sodas, especially before bedtime.

Home Remedy for a Cavity

Home Remedy for a Cavity

It is astonishing how one little tooth, a very small part of your body, can cause such pain and misery when a cavity develops. Cavities can quickly knock you off of your feet with tremendous pain and misery. Prevention is the best remedy for cavities, and with a few lifestyle changes you can reduce your chances of developing cavities. If you already have an aching cavity, there are a few remedies to ease pain and reduce tooth sensitivity until you can see your dentist.

Straws and Snacks

Acidic and sugar-laden beverages, such as sodas and fruit juices, can cause tremendous damage to teeth, leading to decay and cavities. David S. Halpern, D.M.D., suggests drinking with a straw to bypass exposure to teeth and direct fluid into the throat. Snacking throughout the day without brushing afterward can also promote tooth decay and cavities. Barry Dale, D.M.D., says that decay starts the second sugar enters your mouth. Prevent damage from snacks by brushing after all sugary treats. Halpern seconds brushing after snacks by stating that you would have less decay if you ate a pound of chocolate and immediately brushed, versus eating one small piece of chocolate before bed without brushing.

Cheese, Gum and Toothpicks

Topping off a meal with aged cheese can prevent tooth decay according to studies by Ralph Burgess, D.D.S. Burgess says the high levels of calcium and phosphates found in aged cheese create a protective barrier for tooth enamel. Acidic foods break down calcium and phosphate in your teeth, causing decay and cavities. Protect your teeth after meals by munching on cheddar for best results, but Burgess assures that other aged cheeses, such as unprocessed Gruyere, American, Gouda, Edam or provolone will work just as well. Halpern also suggests chewing sugar-free gum at for at least 20 minutes after meals to prevent cavities. Sugar-free chewing gum is made with xylitol, which prevents the build up of cavity-causing micro-organisms in the mouth. The chewing motion also stimulates the flow of saliva, which flushes food debris. Halpern states that toothpicks are quick fix to remove lodged food before bacteria has a chance to develop and promote decay. Use a toothpick after meals to carefully remove any food left between teeth and prevent opportunities for cavities to develop.

Wax

If you have lost a filling or have a cavity that has flared, you may experience pain when drinking or eating cold or hot beverages and food. Wistar Paist, D.M.D., suggests using the wax from a birthday candle to temporarily replace a lost filling or to cover a cavity until you can see your dentist. Break a small piece of wax from the candle, rub between fingers to warm and gently push on the tooth until the wax molds to the tooth. Paist states that any soft, moldable material will work but to avoid using chewing gum which may cause further pain and irritation.

Pain Relievers

Heat may relieve cavity pain. Make your own heat compress by filling a bottle with warm water, wrapping it in a towel and placing against the jaw or area of pain. To soothe aching and throbbing associated with cavities, try taking over-the-counter pain medications such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen. See your dentist immediately if you experience intense pain due to a cavity to prevent the onset of infection which can lead to an abscessed tooth.

How to Use Green Clay Internally

Green clay is often found in various skin care products, but it is also used internally as a detoxifying cleanse by practitioners of alternative medicine. When taken internally in its powdered form, green clay is believed to treat nausea, soothe menstrual cramps and abdominal pain, and cleanse the colon and liver. A study by doctors from Arizona State University found evidence that green clay also promotes the sterilization and healing of wounds.

Instructions

    1

Measure a teaspoon of powdered green clay with a wooden spoon.

    2

Pour the mineral water into a clean drinking glass and stir in the green clay.

    3

Leave the mixture to stand overnight, during which time the clay and water will separate.

    4

Drink in the morning on an empty stomach. There are two ways to take the green clay: You can drink the clear liquid that has separated from the actual clay, or stir the mixture with the wooden spoon to bring the clay to the surface and drink the clay with the mineral water.

    5

Repeat the process daily for 3 weeks. Then take a 1 week break.

How to Grow Ginkgo Biloba

Believed to be the oldest surviving tree on earth, ginkgo biloba has ancestors that lived when dinosaurs roamed around the world.
The medicinal properties of this fruit tree were discovered in 3000 B.C. by Chinese herbalist, Shen Nung, who proclaimed its usefulness in treating heart problems. Today it is cultivated throughout Europe and North America. Recent research shows it improves blood flow to the body and helps with concentration.

Instructions

    1

Plant ginkgo biloba seeds in full sunshine to partial shade in any type soil, including sand, as long as it's well drained.

    2

Grow seed in the ground in the fall or in deep containers protected by an outdoor greenhouse in the winter and transplant later. The seeds should germinate all spring. Chose a male ginkgo biloba tree if you decide to go that route. The fruits from a female tree are slippery and smell very unappealing.

    3

Watch for the fruits in the fall. Pollination takes place the tree's first year, usually by the wind. The ginkgo biloba tree has one or more trunks with round fruits about the size of a cherry tomato, each containing one seed. A tree can live 1,000 years and grow as tall as 50 to 100 feet and is known for its resistance to insects and pollution.

    4

Be patient. The ginkgo biloba tree grows very slowly, mostly between May and the first part of September. It may take several seasons for blooms to appear.

    5

Harvest your ginkgo biloba tree in the fall. Only the leaves are used for medicinal purposes and are what gives ginkgo biloba its commercial value. Best time to prune this tree is spring.

    6

Store the seeds in your refrigerator and use them quickly. Store harvested leaves in a cool, dry place.

Natural Ways to Boost Progesterone

A deterioration in progesterone levels is one of the first signs of impending menopause. This may happen years before the actual cessation of menstruation. The body is designed for levels of progesterone and estrogen to be in harmony. If progesterone levels are low and are coupled with an estrogen dominance, there are natural ways to boost progesterone levels to ease the transition into menopause.

Creams

Many women find symptomatic relief by using natural progesterone cream during early perimenopause, the time directly before menopause. Natural progesterone cream is widely available over the counter in a strength of two percent. There are many different brands available. Generally, the cream or gel is applied topically to the skin for absorption. Follow dosing instructions on the package carefully, and consult your physician before use.

Because bioidentical progesterone is sometimes made from wild Mexican yams, many women try to save money by purchasing one of a number of wild Mexican yam creams. The problem with this is that yam contains only a progesterone precursor, which largely remains inactive when applied to the skin. Yam creams may give some benefit with very small amounts of phytoestrogens (non steroidal plant compounds), but they don't provide the documented benefits of laboratory grade USP progesterone. Ask your doctor if a wild Mexican yam cream is advisable for your situation. Otherwise, it can be applied just like a natural progesterone cream.

Diet

Diet is critical when it comes to optimizing production of progesterone in the body. To boost levels in your body, consume B vitamins, especially B6, and take magnesium. Follow dosing instructions carefully, and consult your doctor for further guidance on vitamin supplementation. Alternatively, you can find many foods that contain these nutrients, including black strap molasses, eggs, almonds, and dark green, leafy vegetables. Make sure to include plenty of healthy lean protein, and healthy fats like olive and canola oils.

Chasteberry

Chasteberry is a commonly used herb that treats all types of issues related to menopause. Chasteberry has the ability to naturally boost levels of progesterone in the body. Chasteberry tea, otherwise known as vitex, is widely available in health food and natural stores. Follow dosing instructions carefully. It is safe to take indefinitely.

How to Remove Toxins with Bath Salts

How to Remove Toxins with Bath Salts

Epsom salts, which contain magnesium sulfate, can be used for ridding many toxins from your body when added to your bath water. Sulfates speed up the natural process of cellular function, causing them to excrete the toxins much faster than they would on their own. Sulfates can be used to remove certain excesses of hormones, such as thyroid hormones and estrogen, as well as toxins that come from drugs, environmental chemicals, and even foods. Once this bath salt is added to your bath correctly, you'll allow your body to get rid of the toxins naturally.

Instructions

    1

Prepare the bathwater. Fill your tub with hot water to the desired amount of your regular bath. Hot water will help the bath salts to dissolve when added to the liquid much easier than if the water were cool.

    2

Add the Epsom salt. Mix in a cup or two of the Epsom salt and stir it around in the water for a few minutes. This will give the salt an equal distribution throughout the water.

    3

Sit in the bath. Allow your body enough time in the mixture to absorb the nutrients from the bath salt. Usually, 20 or 30 minutes is enough time for the Epsom salt to take effect.

    4

Get some rest. Go to bed for at least three hours, so that the Epsom salt can continue its toxin removal process. Cover up with thick blankets to help your body sweat out the toxins.

    5

Take a shower. Wash off the Epsom salt from your skin by taking a shower. Repeat steps 1 through 5 on a regular routine to continue removing the toxins from your body.

Crown Vetch & Cancer Treatment

Crown Vetch & Cancer Treatment

Crown vetch is in the legume family. It is perennial and it forms thick vegetation. It has pink and white small flowers in early summer. This plant was introduced into the United States for erosion control. It is now considered an invasive plant. There are several medicinal claims for crown vetch such as folk medicine treatment of prostrate disorders and as a diuretic heart tonic.

Warning

    Crown vetch is considered toxic.
    Crown vetch is considered toxic.

Crown vetch does have consideration for medicinal purposes. According to Botanical online, the plant is used as a diuretic for fluid retention due to prostrate problems. It is also used for cardiac weakness.

The flowers or fruit are considered toxic and severe symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, a slow pulse rate and even death can occur. Crown vetch should not be used for medical purposes except under strict supervision from a trained medical practitioner. Crown vetch does not appear to be a good candidate for cancer treatment.

Milk Vetch

Although crown vetch is often considered toxic, milk vetch is considered a valid alternative treatment for cancer. Also called Astragalus, this plant has been commonly used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. The plant has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and diuretic benefits.

Milk vetch strengthens the immune system as well as boosting the metabolism and digestion. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, "Astragaus is an adaptoge, meaning it helps protect the body against various stresses, including physical, mental, or emotional stress." Typically, the roots are used to make a tea for consumption or even used in food preparations.

Birdfoot Deer-vetch

Birdfoot Deer-vetch is another plant in the vetch family. The flowers are antispasmodic and considered a sedative for the heart. The plant is also used as a local anti-inflammatory on inflamed skin. However, birdfoot deer-vetch is considered poisonous and can lead to respiratory failure and death.

Potential

Using milk vetch or Astragalus is considered a safe and affective cancer treatment by alternative medical practitioners. Many health food companies now sell Astragalus either alone or in health formulas. The plant can also be purchased dried for your own preparations. It is typically referred to as Astragalus and not milk vetch.

Significance

Avoid other plants in the vetch family like crown vetch and research the benefits of Astragalus when considering alternative or complimentary cancer treatments. As ancient Chinese writings stated, this plant may be, 'the super tonic' and is considered one of China's most important herbal medicines.

What Are the Health Benefits of Flaxseed Tea?

What Are the Health Benefits of Flaxseed Tea?

Linseed, or flaxseed, is a plant that grows year-round. It originated in Asia and the eastern Mediterranean regions. Flaxseed is abundant in fiber and alpha linolenic acid (ALA). ALA is an essential fatty acid, which is largely responsible for the plant's many health benefits, especially heart health, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. To make a warm cup of flaxseed tea, you grind up the flaxseed, and add about 1 tsp. to a cup of boiling water. Let it steep for 10 to 15 minutes, and sprinkle with cinnamon or add a little honey, as suggested by TeaBenefits.com.

Cancer Prevention

According to the Mayo Clinic, flaxseed contains a kind of phytoestrogen known as lignan, which is a powerful antioxidant. It is thought by physicians at the Mayo Clinic that lignan may help avert various cancers, such as breast cancer. Lignan metabolites may attach to estrogen receptors and stop breast cancer cells from growing. On the other hand, the Mayo Clinic also states that recent evidence suggests that there is not enough data to confirm this assumption.

Improve Intestinal Health

The high amount of soluble fiber and magnesium in flaxseed makes it beneficial for alleviating gastrointestinal disorders, such as constipation and gastritis, as noted by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Drink plenty of water alongside flaxseed tea to avoid aggravating problems, such as constipation, in the gastrointestinal area.

Improve Cardiovascular Function

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the essential fatty acids, particularly alpha linolenic acid, in flaxseed tea may help to improve cardiovascular functioning and reduce the chances of suffering from diseases of the heart. Flaxseed may lessen inflammation associated with heart disease, which improves blood vessel health and platelet function. Furthermore, drinking flaxseed tea may also help decrease irregular heartbeats, lower cholesterol and reduce blood pressure, as noted by the website World's Healthiest Foods.

Reduce Menopausal Symptoms

According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, the scientific reports are mixed as to the effectiveness of flaxseed in the treatment of menopausal symptoms, such as breast tenderness and hot flashes.

However, according to the World's Healthiest Foods website, a study published in the Journal of the Society for Integrative Oncology found that postmenopausal women who consumed 40 grams of flaxseed (crushed) everyday for roughly six weeks decreased hot flashes by almost 60 percent.

Anti-Inflammatory Advantage

According to the World's Healthiest Foods website, your body uses omega-3 fats to make anti-inflammatory prostaglandins, which are hormone-like molecules. Thus, you should consume a diet rich in omega-3 fats (like flaxseed) to help diminish systemic inflammation that can lead to many chronic inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis and asthma.

Your body requires both types of essential fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6) to maintain good health, but it is important to consume them in the proper ratio. According to Dr. Mercola's website, the ideal balance of omega-3 to omega-6 essential fats is a one-to-one ratio. So, refrain from eating too many pro-inflammatory omega-6 fats, which are primarily found in processed foods, animal fats and vegetable oils, such as palm oil, soybean oil and corn oil.

Natural Cures for Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata is a hair loss condition that causes onset of baldness to occur in round spots of the scalp. The cause of this condition is unknown, although it is considered to be a hereditary condition. There are some prescription medications that can help with the condition, although many people opt for natural cures first.

Essential Oils

Some essential oils can be used as a natural remedy for alopecia areata. When massaged into the affected area on a daily basis, these oils have shown improvement in about 45 percent of the people who tried them. This combination oil is made up of thyme, lavender and rosemary. There have been no reported side effects in those who tried this natural cure, although some people who have allergies may notice a reaction.

Onion Juice

Onion juice is another natural remedy that has garnered results for sufferers of this affliction. In a study by the Journal of Dermatology, more than 86 percent of people who tried onion juice saw improvement in hair loss. This occurred after six weeks of use. It is important to note that the biggest improvement occurred in the males of the group; however, onion juice is still a natural remedy that any with alopecia areata can try.

He Shou Wu

He Shou Wu is a natural Chinese herb that has been used for years in China to help with hair loss, as well as with those suffering from graying. This herb also offers natural help for those who suffer from alopecia areata, when used for at least three to six months. It is a tonic that is applied directly to the affected areas of the scalp.

Hypnosis

Hypnosis has also been used as a natural hair cure for those suffering from alopecia areata. In one study, 28 patients were treated with hypnosis, and all of them scored lower afterwards for anxiety and for depression. After three to eight hypnotherapy sessions, 12 of those patients saw re-growth in their hair from 75-100 percent. In nine people, a total re-growth of their hair occurred.

Ultraviolet Rays

Some studies have shown that controlled exposure to ultraviolet rays has helped in some cases of alopecia areata. This is also known as phototherapy, and can help with certain conditions of the skin. It is a natural treatment that must be regulated carefully, as it can also be harmful when exposure to the rays is too high.

Is Crystal Salt an Antifungal?

Crystal salt, or pure salt that has not been refined, has antifungal and antimicrobial properties. Crystal salt can be used in the treatment of fungal infections such as ringworm and athlete's foot.

Background

Salt, also called sodium chloride, is the most common non-metallic mineral in the world, according to the Salt Institute. All salt has antimicrobial and antifungal properties, meaning it can be used to kill bacteria and fungi.

History

Charaka, known as the father of Ayurvedic (traditional native Indian) medicine, documented the healing properties of crystal salt as early as 2000 B.C., according to the Sundaram website.

Benefits

Crystal salt, such as natural Himalayan crystal salt, contains minerals that have been refined out of standard table salt, according to the National Skin Care Institute. Crystal salt contains between 84 and 92 of the minerals required by the human body, and is recommended over other salts for use in holistic treatments, according to the website.

Identification

Pure, unprocessed crystal salt is light pink in color, according to The Marco Eagle. The salt crystals are large, but are easily broken down when dried.

Remedies

The Ringworm Treatment Resource Center suggests dampening skin infected with ringworm fungus and applying moistened salt directly to the skin for 30 minutes. Health 911 recommends soaking skin infected with athlete's foot in a solution of 1 pint warm water and 2 tsp. salt for 10-15 minutes to kill fungi.

Alternative Brain Cancer Treatments

Traditional brain cancer treatments can be difficult to deal with and often don't work leaving patients desperate for a cure. Many turn to alternative methods of treatment. Some proponents believe that these alternatives should be tried even before the traditional methods of cancer treatments.

Reduce Swelling and Inflammation

According to Independent Cancer Research Foundation, supplements can be used to reduce brain inflammation and swelling. None of the following treatments will interfere with cancer treatments. These particular supplements are meant to reduce brain swelling and brain inflammation. Try 10 grams of MSM a day to start with. Next, take a dose of Oxygen Elements Plus, which is another supplement that can be beneficial to brain cancer patients. Finally, Vitalzym and barley powder are excellent supplements for swelling and inflammation of the brain. All supplements should be taken according to manufacturer instructions and can be purchased from a trusted health food store.

Vitamin C

According to Independent Cancer Research Foundation, vitamin C can also be effective in treating and fighting all types of cancers, not just brain cancer. Vitamin C is similar to glucose and should be consumed as one would consume glucose, or according to manufacture instructions. Two-time Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Ewan Cameron, M.D., managed to extend the lives of several cancer patients by giving the patients 10 grams of vitamin C a day through an IV.

There are three things the patient can do to help the vitamin C get inside the cancer cells. It's important to remember that cancer cells consume 15 times more glucose than normal cells and those cells cannot tell the difference between glucose and vitamin C. The use of potassium ascorbate can also help with the absorption of vitamin C. Vitamin C is salt derived and serves to facilitate the absorption of potassium in the body. Finally, DMSO can also help with cancer and the use of vitamin C. DMSO can help rebuild the bones. It also targets cancer cells specifically.

Ultraviolet Light Therapy

The Independent Cancer Research Foundation also recommends the use of ultraviolet light therapy for cancer patients. They are currently researching the treatment, because it is fairly inexpensive and can also be applied to several different medical conditions. The treatment is proven to be both effective and safe. It also kills massive amounts of microbes very quickly, which may mean that the treatment can create a significant amount of discomfort for the patient, so beware. This treatment is only recommended for localized cancers and tumors. It is not recommended for cancer that has metastasized. It is also not recommended for children under the age of eight.

Herbal & Homeopathic Remedies for Essential Tremors

Essential tremors are a condition characterized by uncontrolled trembling typically in the hands; this can interfere with your ability to function on a daily basis. Essential tremors and Parkinson's disease are two different things, and essential tremors generally occur in adults that are older. Tremor severity evolves over time; tremors are intensified during movement, may affect one or both of your hands, and are aggravated by environmental factors and stress. There are, however, herbal and homeopathic remedies for the condition.

Essential Tremor Symptoms

In Prescription for Nutritional Healing, Phyllis A. Balch M.D., a certified nutritional consultant, explains some of the symptoms associated with essential tremors, and the author further explains how essential tremors differ from Parkinson's disease. Essential tremors affect both of your hands, and the tremors are less severe during periods of rest. Parkinson's disease involves tremors that are equally severe while at rest and during activities. When it comes to essential tremors, the act of attempting to suppress them by force of your will aggravates the condition further.

Gambir

In Chinese Traditional Herbal Medicine: Materia Medica and Herbal Resource, author Lesley Tierra explains that Gambir is an herb ideal for treating convulsions and tremors. Gambir is beneficial for the heart, the liver and the pericardium. The herb works as a blood tonifier as well as an antispasmodic agent. Adults can consume a daily dosage of Gambir at 3 g to 10 g. If consuming Gambir in powder form, 0.9 g to 1.5 g daily is all that is required to gain the herb's antispasmodic effects.

Lady's Slipper

In Planetary Herbology, Michael Tierra explains that Lady's Slipper is an antispasmodic herb appropriate for the treatment of tremors. Lady's Slipper is commonly used to treat epilepsy, tremors, restlessness and the herb is a naturally calming herb. A decoction of the herb can be consumed at a dosage of 3 g to 9 g brewed in a tea 3 to 4 times daily. Lady Slipper tincture can also be consumed at a dosage of 10 to 30 drops 3 to 4 times a day for tremor relief.

Arnica

In Medical Botany: Plants Effecting Human Health, authors Robert Eglesfelde Griffith and Memory P. F. Elvin-Lewis assert that Arnica is a traditional homeopathic remedy for palsy and tremors. Arnica, when consumed, has positive effects on your nervous system. The treatment is generally offered as an infusion by diluting the treatment in water. Arnica can be consumed by mixing 3 pellets of Arnica 30c in 500 milliliters of water in a bottle. Before consumption, the bottle must be shaken, and the mixture is sipped. A teaspoon of the mixture is consumed 3 times a day for tremor relief.

Argentum nitricum

In Prescription for Natural Cures, authors James Balch and Mark Stengler assert that Argentum nitricum is a homeopathic treatment for hand tremors when writing and for treating conditions involving uncoordinated movements. Argentum nitricum 30c can be consumed in pill form which can be chewed one time daily. You should continue to use this remedy for a period of thirty days to gain maximum benefit.

How to Powder Bee Pollen Granules

How to Powder Bee Pollen Granules

Bee pollen is touted to have benefits from stabilizing weight, lowering cholesterol and triglycerides, curing allergies and increasing energy and stamina to being a complete source of nutrition. Raw bee pollen contains live enzymes that are killed when introduced to heat or other processing, and these enzymes are the source of many of its benefits. Buying bee pollen granules in their purest form is the best way to benefit from it; but to reap those benefits, you must soak the granules to make them fully digestible or grind them into a fine powder. This ensures their goodness does not pass through your system without stopping to help out.

Instructions

Machine Grinding

    1

Clean and thoroughly dry your coffee grinder or food processor.

    2

Place a small handful of bee pollen granules into a coffee grinder or food processor equipped with a chopping blade.

    3

Process the granules until they are the desired consistency. Even a rough chop to break open the outer shells of the granules makes them up to 90 percent more likely to be absorbed by the body, according to Nuts Online.

Grinding by Hand

    4

Clean and thoroughly dry your mortar and pestle.

    5

Place a small handful of bee pollen granules into the mortar.

    6

Cover most of the top of the mortar with your free hand -- with an opening just large enough for the pestle -- to keep granules from jumping out.

    7

Use the pestle to press the granules into the side of mortar, breaking them open and grinding them down into a powder.

Olive Oil for Stretch Marks & Scars

Olive Oil for Stretch Marks & Scars

Stretch marks and scars are incredibly difficult to get rid of and can be frustrating when they mar the appearance of healthy skin. Although there are many commercial products on the market that claim to reduce the appearance of or eliminate stretch marks and scars, a cheaper and more natural solution may be hiding in your kitchen cabinet olive oil.

About Stretch Marks

Stretch marks occur when the dermis, or middle layer of skin, is stretched to a point where the elasticity breaks down. This causes microscopic bleeding and tissue inflammation, which in turn causes the raised reddish and purple look of a new stretch mark. The permanent stretch mark is created when the marks heal, and over time they may fade into a silvery white color that is lighter than the natural skin tone.

About Scars

A scar occurs as a natural process to healing, with the collagen beneath the skin growing into a scar after a person has sustained an injury. Scars vary depending on the shape and size of the wound, a person's age, its location, genetics and infection. A scar can usually take 12 to 18 months to fully form, and in the beginning, it may be red or dark and raised. It will eventually become paler and flatter over time. It may take up to 24 months before a scar is fully developed.

About Olive Oil

Olive oil is a natural substance that is high in antioxidants, including vitamin E. Antioxidants are important to the human body as they protect against age-inducing free radicals. Olive oil is also rich in vitamins A and D, along with monounsaturated fat that has been known to prevent disease.

How to Use Olive Oil

Olive oil can be used as a part of a person's beauty regimen from either being ingested or being massaged into the skin. Users can also choose to use olive oil in a bath or as a lotion mixture for their face, hands and feet. Olive oil can also be used in the hair as a conditioner. As a topical substance, olive oil is best applied onto damp skin, as the water will help reduce the feeling of greasiness.

Benefits of Olive Oil

Olive oil has been known to promote a smooth complexion, help maintain skin elasticity, heal dry nails and soften cuticles, and add shine to hair. It is also an ideal substance to use on stretch marks. Olive oil acts as a softening agent when applied directly to stretch marks and can be used by itself or in combination with other substances, such as Aloe Vera. As olive oil is rich in omega oils and vitamins, which promotes healthy skin, it can also help reduce the texture and appearance of scars if applied directly onto the affected area. The best quality oil to use on stretch marks and scars is extra-virgin olive oil.

How to Use Garlic to Treat Coughs

How to Use Garlic to Treat Coughs

As part of the growing trend toward natural and homeopathic therapy, more people are embracing garlic and its medicinal properties rather than resorting to the synthetic drug treatments. Garlic has been used to treat coughs, upper respiratory infections and other common ailments.

Instructions

Treat Mild-to-Severe Coughs With Garlic Supplements and Teas

    1

Use garlic to prevent coughs altogether. By taking advantage of the immune system boosting properties in garlic, you might be able to avoid coming down with a cold completely.

    2

Consume raw garlic on a regular basis if you can. This will provide you with maximum health benefits.

    3

Take a garlic supplement as part of your daily health regiment. Many people use a combination of supplements with vitamin C, echinacea, lysine and garlic in order to keep the immune system functioning at maximum capacity.

    4

Use garlic to treat coughs and sore throats when they appear. Coughs caused by irritation in the lining of the esophagus can be effectively treated with a garlic-based tea drink that soothes the pain and reduces inflammation.

Make a Garlic-Based Tea to Soothe a Cough

    5

Boil water as you would to make any tea.

    6

Chop or mince the garlic so that is very fine.

    7

Add the minced garlic to the hot water. Allow the garlic to steep for several minutes so you can get a good, strong brew.

    8

Strain out the minced garlic and allow the tea to cool for several minutes. You can drink it hot, but it is best when served lukewarm.

    9

Enjoy the soothing feeling as you drink the garlic tea. Its effects can be noticed right away. Unlike over-the-counter throat lozenges that simply numb the throat, your garlic tea will actually reduce the tissue inflammation. The severity and duration of your symptoms may be drastically decreased.
