SRT & NLP Techniques

The abbreviation SRT stands for Spiritual Response Therapy. This is a specific sort of therapy that is believed to allow you to get in touch with your subconscious to rid yourself of bad behaviors that you may have developed due to things that happened in a past life. The techniques used in SRT are believed to unlock a certain part of the brain that stores this information commonly referred to as the akashic record. The abbreviation NLP, on the other hand, stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming. This is a therapeutic technique that is used to encourage you to find something you excel at doing and then use this strength to improve all other weaknesses. This helps to build up your self esteem and confidence.

SRT Pendulum Technique

One technique of SRT requires you to use a pendulum. By staring at the pendulum and concentrating on nothing but it, you can remain conscious and clear your mind so that you can begin to connect with your higher being. Once connected with the lives you have lived in the past, you will begin to realize the traumatic events that have led to your current behavior.

The second technique of SRT combines the pendulum technique with a charting program. The charting allows therapists to see what a person is feeling or thinking about a traumatic event as they experience each past life. The charting can help piece together larger puzzles that require more exploration, especially when there are multiple past lives involved over many periods of time.

NLP and Positive Thinking

NLP is significantly different than SRT. The first technique used in NLP is to find someone that models the behavior that you want to achieve. You can then imitate or copy this person in order to learn the behavior that is desirable. After learning the desired behavior, it should become second nature and you will improve in the areas that they wanted.

Self-Help Media

Another technique used in NLP involves listening to self-help books and other media that motivate you to want to learn the behavior. These motivational tools help to reinforce your ability to achieve your goals in becoming the person that you desire to be.

Dioxychlor Side-Effects

Dioxychlor Side-Effects

Dioxychlor is a homeopathic dilution of oxidized natrium chloride that contains trace minerals vital to life. "Natrium" is Latin for sodium, so natrium chloride is sodium chloride, or common table salt. Many people have used Dioxychlor for its anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. Used as a natural remedy for a number of ailments over the years, Dioxychlor side-effects are nonexistent.

The use of Dioxychlor dates back to World War I when Western military forces used a similar substance to treat infections, particularly gangrene infections, saving the lives of countless soldiers. Dioxychlor, most often labeled "C3" or "DC3," was developed by American Biologics and has been in clinical use for more than 15 years. Tens of thousands of Dioxychlor infusions have been safely and effectively administered at the American Biologics Integrative Hospital and Medical Center, as well as at other clinics and hospitals throughout the world.

Dioxychlor is an inorganic (contains no carbon) oxidant (oxidizing agent) consisting of sodium salt. It is a natural antibiotic capable of killing bacteria. Dioxychlor's chemical structure is pH-dependent, which means its ability or inability to resist change or decomposition is largely determined by the acidity or alkalinity of the surrounding medium. When Dioxychlor is added to an acidic medium, it becomes unstable and will decompose into a variety of products, including but not limited to nascent oxygen. Nascent oxygen is simply "free" oxygen atoms that exist in a water solution for a split second before reacting with other atoms.

Dioxychlor assists the body's normal immune system functions by supplying sizable amounts of oxygen to anaerobes. Anaerobes, such as bacteria, do not require oxygen to live or for growth and may die in the presence of oxygen. The active agent in Dioxychlor is the nascent oxygen, which must be activated with the introduction of an acidic medium for the anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial activity to occur. Dioxychlor assists with the body's natural defensive mechanisms to counteract infectious agents in the elderly and other individuals with compromised or inefficient immune systems.

Dioxychlor, along with other inorganic oxidants, has potential for use against Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and a host of bacterial, viral and fungal infections, Candida albicans (yeast-like fungal organism) and environmental toxicity (poison-levels). Unlike other fungicides, the use of Dioxychlor does not lead to the development of resistant strains of fungi with long-term use.

Dioxychlor is not the same as the "Miracle Mineral Solution" (MMS), also known as the Miracle Mineral Supplement. They are the same chemically, but Dioxychlor is weaker. According to the Food and Drug Administration, which is warning consumers not to take MMS, the Miracle Mineral Solution creates industrial-strength bleach when activated with an acidic medium. The FDA has received a number of health injury reports from consumers using MMS, including vomiting, severe nausea and serious low blood pressure due to dehydration. In contrast, Dioxychlor side-effects are absent when the dilution is properly administered.

How to Use Cranberry to Lower Cholesterol

How to Use Cranberry to Lower Cholesterol

Cholesterol, in the right amount, is an essential component of the blood system. It is manufactured by the liver in adequate proportions to assist in tissue repair, manufacturing steroid hormones and strengthening cellular membranes. When cholesterol is either produced in excess or taken in by a diet high in saturated fat, it can be a risk factor for stroke or heart attack. You can use cholesterol to lower your harmful cholesterol.

Lower the risk of cardiovascular disease related to high cholesterol with the increase of antioxidant levels when you include cranberry juice in your diet. A minimum of one 8-oz. glass a day is recommended, with the best results from 2 or 3 glasses per day.

Expect the good cholesterol (HDL) to increase as much as 10 percent with an average intake of 3 glasses per day of cranberry juice. The studies done are with cranberry juice that contain about 27 percent of pure cranberry.

Lower the bad cholesterol (LDL) with the phenols that are found in cranberries. These plant chemicals are effective in protecting the arteries from plaque buildup.

Use cranberry juice to supply flavonols, proanthocyanidins and anthocyanins to prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. The increase of these flavonoids are active in reducing the ability for the cholesterol to stick to arteries.

Combine oats and cranberries for a heart-healthy breakfast. Put 1/2 cup of rolled oats and 1 1/4 cups of water in a small saucepan.

Bring mixture to a boil and cook for 4 minutes over medium-low heat. Stir the oats to prevent them from sticking.

Pour in 1/4 cup of fat-free milk and cook for 2 minutes. Stir constantly.

Remove the pan from the burner and stir in 1/4 cup of dried cranberries and 14 whole unsalted almonds, chopped.

Top off the oatmeal with about 1 tsp. of brown sugar.

Compare the difference in cranberries and red grapes. Studies show that people who use cranberries to reduce the level of blood cholesterol readings have better results than those who use red grapes.

Black Currant Seed Oil Benefits

Black Currant Seed Oil Benefits

Black currant (Ribes nigrum) grows in Europe and Asia. For centuries it has been used as a food and medicine. The astringent flavor of black currant complements many beverages and dishes. The leaves and berries of the black currant plant are used as an additive to alcohol preparations such as Russian vodka and beer.

Black currant seed oil provides a wide range of health benefits.
Black currant seed oil provides a wide range of health benefits.

Black Currant Seed Oil Contains Essential Fatty Acids

Black currant seed oil contains the essential fatty acids gamma-linolenic acid and alpha-linolenic acid. The extraction of oil from black currant seeds yields 17% gamma-linolenic acid and 13% alpha-linolenic acid. These significant amounts of essential fatty acids offer health benefits through supplementation. Gamma-linolenic acid falls in the omega-6 family of fatty acids and alpha-linolenic acid falls in the omega-3 family. Alpha-linolenic acid is similar to the beneficial fatty acids found in fish oils.

Black Currant Seed Oil and Gamma Linolenic Acid

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center's website, gamma-linolenic acid is the only omega-6 fatty acid that can reduce inflammation. It can also help in a variety of health conditions. It may improve nerve function for diabetes patients, relieve dry eye and maintain or improve bone mass and proper calcium absorption. Gamma-linolenic acid also shows promise in preventing or lessening allergic reactions. Allergy sufferers typically have lower levels of gamma-linolenic acid in their blood.

Black Currant Seed Oil and Inflammation

Due to the inflammation modulating benefits of black currant seed oil, it may be helpful for inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis. By reducing the secretion of inflammatory cytokines, the gamma-linolenic acid in black currant seed oil may relieve the painful symptoms of this disease like morning stiffness and joint pain. Another benefit it may provide is a reduction in the amount of pain medication rheumatoid arthritis sufferers must take.

Black Currant Seed Oil and Cardiovascular Health

Although there have only been preliminary studies of the benefits of gamma linolenic acid in cardiovascular health, it may prove to be beneficial in decreasing blood pressure. One clinical study showed that sufferers of peripheral artery disease showed improved blood pressure levels when they took both gamma-linolenic acid and an omega-3 fatty acid. The anti-inflammatory properties of black currant seed oil may also reduce platelet aggregation and cholesterol levels.

Other Benefits of Black Currant Seed Oil

Black currant seed oil is also useful in preventing premature aging as it reduces wrinkle formation and repairs tissue damage. The omega-6 fatty acids of black currant seed oil may be useful in treating eczema. It may also be beneficial in treating liver toxicity and withdrawal symptoms of alcohol abuse. Symptoms of premenstrual syndrome may also be reduced, alleviating cramps, depression and breast tenderness. Black currant seed oil could aid in repairing damage to the liver while reducing stress to the nervous system.

How to Align the Body With Rolfing

How to Align the Body With Rolfing

In the mid 1950's, Dr. Rolf designed a technique for breaking up misaligned fascia and realigning the structural system for a more natural, healthier, body. The system is used today, and even Oprah Winfrey has had a segment on Rolfing. Here's how it can align your body.

Allow the Rolfer to palpitate the muscle fascia. The Rolfer uses his hands to review the muscles, palpitating or feeling for imbalances in the tissue texture, temperature and quality. This step is much like a doctor taking preliminary tests to locate a malady.

Relax your muscles as the Rolfer discriminates, separating the muscle fascia that needs to be worked on and correcting it. Muscle fascia will form improperly after an injury. Once this builds, it keeps the body out of alignment unless it's broken down and reworked. The misalignment causes pain, fatigue and structural damage.

Feel the Rolfer integrate your body using gravity, bringing it back to the way it's supposed to work. Rolfing is different from other massages. It attempts to realign the body so that the force of gravity is working with you instead of against you.

Continue for at least the traditional 10 sessions. Rolfing was created to be completed in 10 sessions. However the first 3 sessions are a great introduction to the Rolfing process.

Practice the movements the Rolfing therapist assigns to you. To help the body realign, the therapist gives you a series of movements to practice at home. The ultimate benefit of Rolfing is shown by the sincerity of the receiver. If the whole program is judiciously practiced, then alignment of the body should be complete.

Natural Ways to Curb Smoking

Natural Ways to Curb Smoking

Deciding to quit smoking is a lot easier said than done, especially if you have been smoking for years. If you have decided that this is what you want to do, but you want natural alternatives, there are some available to you. Make a list of the reasons you want to quit and keep it nearby so you can remind yourself whenever the cravings hit.

St. John's Wort

Take the supplement St. John's Wort. This herb helps relieve depression and increase dopamine, a hormone that makes you happy. When you smoke, dopamine is released; that is one reason so many people get hooked on cigarettes. Supplementing it with this supplement helps give you the same feeling.

Eat nuts, such as peanuts or pistachios. Smoking requires you to use both your hands and your mouth, so eating nuts makes you do the same thing. Make sure you get the ones with shells. You will have to crack them open and then eat them. Nuts also have valuable fats that are good for you.

Drink a cup of green tea whenever you want to smoke. This is time consuming and uses both your hands and mouth. Also, green tea contains caffeine, which gives you that extra boost you may need to get through your day that you typically get from smoking.

Supplements to Help Heal Spurs

Supplements to Help Heal Spurs

Osteophytes, or bone spurs, are painful extensions of bone that can grow on joints, and they usually form after injury to the bone or joint, according to the Mayo Clinic. People who suffer from arthritis and osteoporosis are prone to bone spurs. Natural vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements may help alleviate pain and promote healing of bone spurs.

Glucosamine is a natural healing supplement and pain reliever. Taken orally, glucosamine can provide the same anti-inflammatory benefits as drugs but without the side effects. In addition to providing relief from inflammation and pain, glucosamine helps heal painful bone spurs and aids in the repair of damaged joints, according to Myztique.com. Natural glucosamine is found in shellfish and is available in manufactured forms as well. According to WebMD.com, synthetic glucosamine has been found to be as effective as natural sources of the supplement. Synthetic supplements include glucosamine hydrochloride, glucosamine sulfate and N acetyl-glucosamine, which is glucosamine combined with minerals and salts. Glucosamine supplements are available at health food stores and major supermarkets. Check with your doctor before taking this or any other over-the-counter remedy.

Calcium Supplements

A natural calcium supplement combined with a healthy diet of green vegetables may help relieve bone spurs. When the body is deficient in calcium, it will be taken from the bones. This leads to weak bones and the formation of deposits of calcium and acidic salts on the joints. According to the Arthritis Treatment and Relief website, a calcium research project conducted by Prevention magazine showed that more than a half of the people in the study suffering from bone pain experienced relief after taking calcium supplements. A calcium supplement may help relieve pain and in some cases heal bone spurs that form as result of calcium deficiency in the blood. Consult with your doctor first.

Alfalfa is a natural source of vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin E and vitamin K. Alfalfa also provides calcium, potassium, carotene, iron and zinc. According to the Hypoglycemic Health Association of Australia, alfalfa contains the necessary minerals for healthy bone formation. One of the most beneficial minerals in alfalfa is selenium. Selenium attaches to free radicals in the bloodstream, which helps remove toxins from the body. The reduction of toxins, together with increased calcium and other essential vitamins and minerals, helps alleviate pain and inflammation. Drinking a tea made from alfalfa three or four times each day or taking an over-the-counter alfalfa herbal supplement may help relieve painful bone spurs.

What Are the Dangers of Manuka Oil?

What Are the Dangers of Manuka Oil?

Manuka oil is an alternative topical treatment for various skin ailments, including irritations, rashes, athlete's foot, dandruff, and other minor skin issues. Although it is a natural treatment, it does come with potential dangers.

Additional Uses

Besides treating skin ailments, manuka oil is used as an analgesic, anti-histamine, anti-infectious, antiseptic, decongestant, and insecticide.

Active Ingredients

Manuka oil contains caryophyllene, geraniol, pinene, linalol, humulene, and leptospermone.

You should avoid using manuka oil during pregnancy because it can cause spasmodic activity.

According to the New Zealand Office of Complementary Medicines, long-term exposure to manuka oil may cause an allergic reaction that could result in, ironically, a skin rash.

According to drugs.com, researchers from an animal study noticed a sedating effect.

Drug Interactions

Manuka oil may have adverse interactions with certain prescription drugs. Consult your physician before using.

Problems With Wobenzym N

Problems With Wobenzym N

Wobenzym N is an extremely popular dietary supplement and alternative remedy, used as a home remedy for dozens of common ailments. This enzyme formula is a combination of two plant-based, protein-digesting enzymes, papain and bromelain. Protease enzymes have long been implicated for their use in treating inflammatory diseases like sinusitis, rhematoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, fever, swelling and sports injury. Topical Wobenzym products, which were banned by the U.S. Food and Drug administration in 2008, had been successfully used as treatments and debriding agents for skin injuries, rashes, burns and superficial skin cancers. Despite the many potential benefits associated with Wobenzym N, protease enzyme supplements are associated with some degree of risk.

Gastrointestinal Side Effects

Papain and bromelain, the two principle ingredients of Wobenzym N, generally cause few side effects in healthy individuals. However, Medline Plus, a service of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, indicates that protease enzymes can cause brief periods of stomach cramping and diarrhea. This mild side effect occurs because protease enzymes affect the chemical balance of the digestive tract and may speed the digestion of high-protein foods. Wobenzym N may also rarely cause nausea, vomiting or reflux in certain individuals.

The most serious problem associated with Wobenzym N is the potential risk of a serious allergic reaction. The two protease enzymes found in Wobenzym N, papain and bromelain, are derived from papaya and pineapple respectively. Trace amounts of these fruits may appear in Wobenzym N products and may cause allergic reactions in people with known allergies to either fruit. A person is more likely to be allergic to Wobenyzm N if she has a known allergy to latex, birch, cypress, carrot, celery, caraway or wheat.

FDA Action

In 2008, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned the over-the-counter sale of topical preparations containing the papaya-derived enzyme papain. Some products manufactured by Wobenzym N, including creams and ointments, were affected by this legislation. The FDA's official policy states that the recall occurred because some people suffered from allergic reactions to the enzyme. This decision was met with some controversy within the alternative health community, since the risk of allergic reaction is slim for people using topical preparations.

Bleeding Risk

Wobenzym N contains bromelain, a key enzyme derived from pineapple, which can prevent platelets from clumping together. This may increase a person's risk of bleeding. Women have reported heavier menstrual flow while using Wobenzym N, and it may cause uterine bleeding in pregnant women. People with bleeding disorders like hemophilia and von Willebrand disease should avoid bromelain except under the guidance of a qualified health practitioner.

Drug Interactions

Wobenzym N may interact positively with some drugs; for example, it works in synergy with non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) to decrease pain and inflammation. However, it may also cause serious complications if it is used incorrectly with certain drugs. Because of Wobenzym N's potential anticoagulant effects, people taking blood-thinners like warfarin should avoid bromelain because of the potentially serious risk of hemorrhage. Additionally, Wobenzym N can cause an unsafe drop in blood pressure among people taking drugs designed to decrease symptoms of hypertension.

Home Remedies for a Face Blister

There are a variety of reasons you might get a face blister. It can be caused by friction, a burn, eczema, allergies, poisonous plant contact or diseases such as chickenpox. Face blisters need to be treated with great care to prevent scarring or the spread of certain conditions. Thankfully, there are a number of treatments that can be used to help face blisters heal quickly.

Blisters and Eczema

You can get blisters on your face when eczema develops. Allergies that are at the source of eczema can cause inflammation of the skin and blister formations. Eczema is a type of dermatitis with symptoms that include facial blisters, dry cracked skin and itchiness. Eczema-related facial blisters appear just underneath the skin and look like small, tiny bubbles. Eczema can be treated with green tea extract; you can consume 250 to 500 milligrams a day for the anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants in the herb. The use of green tea oil will diminish the symptoms associated with eczema and will help keep face blisters under control. Cat's claw also can be taken internally to treat face blisters; you can consume 20 milligrams of this herb three times a day to reduce skin inflammation and to derive its antifungal and antibacterial effects.

Blisters and Allergies

You might use a cosmetic or product on your face that causes your skin to blister. The blistering is an allergic reaction to the product's use. You should cease using the product immediately. Tend to allergic facial blisters with aloe vera. Cut an aloe vera leaf lengthwise to expose the gel inside. Then apply the gel directly to the blister. Aloe promotes healing and is helpful in diminishing the soreness and tenderness associated with face blisters. Aloe also will help reduce potential scarring sometimes associated with face blisters. If you don't have an aloe plant, apply calamine lotion to your face blisters to help diminish any itchiness or irritation.

Blisters and Poison Ivy, Oak and Sumac

Poison ivy, oak and sumac are plants that contain urushiol, an oily ingredient that causes an allergic skin reaction when you come in contact with it. You can get contact dermatitis within hours or days of being exposed. Bumps and blisters can form on the body, and when you scratch them, the blisters can open up and ooze. The oozing discharge can spread and form more blisters on the body. To treat face blisters caused by contact with poisonous plants, apply calamine lotion and hydrocortisone cream on the skin to stop itchiness and prevent blister breakage. Taking Benadryl or another antihistamine can also eliminate itchiness so the blisters can go away on their own.

Blisters and Chickenpox

To treat face blisters that result from chickenpox, take a cool washcloth and place it gently over your face. This will help to diminish the appearance of blistering skin. You can also use cold compresses to help diminish the appearance of face blisters with this condition. Refrain from washing your face with warm water; it will increase the itchiness of chickenpox and tempt you to scratch or pick at the blisters. The application of calamine lotion might also help in drying up the pox on your face and in preventing itchiness.

How to Treat Dandruff With Witch Hazel

How to Treat Dandruff With Witch Hazel

Dandruff can be an embarrassing condition. It's caused by dead skin cells on the scalp that become itchy. This dry skin flakes off and can fall onto your clothes where everyone can see it. You can treat dandruff with food if it's caused by an allergy or you can treat it externally. Instead of using special shampoos, treat your dandruff in a more natural way with witch hazel.

Mix 2 oz. of witch hazel with 1 cup of distilled water and 3 tbsp. of lemon juice. Combine these ingredients thoroughly.

Apply the witch hazel mixture your scalp when your hair is damp and clean. Leave the mixture in rather than rinsing it out. Allow your hair to dry naturally and style it as usual.

Repeat the application of the witch hazel mixture two to three times a week. It helps to keep your dandruff under control and gives your hair a nice shine.

Add cider vinegar to witch hazel to treat dandruff. Mix witch hazel and lemon in the same proportions as described in Step 1, but instead of 1 cup distilled water, use cider vinegar. Again, ensure that you mix these ingredients thoroughly before use.

Put this second mixture on your scalp when the hair is dry. Leave it on for 30 minutes, then wash it off with a mild shampoo. You can repeat this procedure as often as needed and you can dry and style your hair as you would normally.

How to Use Gelatin to Detox

The wisdom goes back centuries: gelatin is good for digestion. It contains glycine, an amino acid that helps mobilize the digestive process and binds to pollutant molecules such as heavy metals, thus helping to detoxify the digestive system naturally. The best way to get pure gelatin is through "bone broth," also known as soup stock, which you can drink alone or use in cooking, You can even freeze it into ice cube trays and use it like a bouillon cube. The bone marrow contains the gelatin, which is released during cooking.

Heat enough olive oil to cover the bottom of a stockpot. Add bones, onions, carrots and celery, with a pinch of salt. Cook until everything begins to sweat. This begins the process of drawing the nutrients from the bones and vegetables.

Add 1 quart of water and another pinch of salt. Boil for 15 minutes or until water reduces slightly (you can tell by the ring that forms around the sides of the pot).

    Repeat Step 2, twice.

Add one more quart of water and gelatin. Stir thoroughly to dissolve gelatin. Simmer 4 to 24 hours. The longer it simmers, the more nutrients you will get from the bones and vegetables.

Strain through strainer and funnel into quart jars and, if desired, ice cube tray. You can use it immediately, or refrigerate and/or freeze.

Home Remedy to Bleach Underarms

Underarm stains are a common, yet embarrassing problem. Staining of the skin in the underarm area can be caused by genetics, along with overuse of antiperspirants and deodorants. Shaving, dead skin cells, hyper-pigmentation and excessive sweating can also cause underarm staining. While not proven scientifically to produce results, many home remedies can help alleviate some of the staining that can occur in the underarm area.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is frequently used as a bleach-type product that is gentle and effective. Ranging from 3.0 to 3.5 percent in concentration for personal use, hydrogen peroxide is safe to use for underarm skin. Apply daily using a saturated cotton ball. Allow to dry and leave on for about 15 minutes. Rinse well after use with warm water.

Lemons have long been used as bleaching agents and are quite safe to use on underarm skin. Along with their bleaching properties, lemons contain citric acid which helps to remove dead skin cells that can contribute to darker underarm skin. Simply slice up some lemons and gently rub the slices over the affected area once a day. Let dry completely, then rinse off. You should notice a difference in the tone and texture of the skin within a few days. Likewise, you can apply lemon juice to underarm skin using a saturated cotton ball. Let dry and rinse off. Again, do this once a day for optimal results.

Remove Dead Skin Cells

Lactic acid can be beneficial when it comes to lightening underarm skin. Contained in milk and dairy products, the lactic acid works by removing layers of dead skin cells, revealing lighter, more youthful skin. Simply apply some milk to the affected area using a saturated cotton ball. Allow to dry for 15 minutes, then rinse off. Similarly, you may apply a teaspoon of yogurt to the affected area using your fingertips. Allow to dry, then rinse off completely. These treatments should yield results within a few days.

How to Treat Cysts With Home Remedies

Cysts are abnormal, saclike structures containing fluids, semisolids or gas. They vary in size and can manifest anywhere in your body. While some cysts are visible and palpable, cysts affecting internal organs such as the kidneys and liver can only be detected through imaging tests. According to MedicineNet, the treatment for cysts is dependent upon their cause, size and location in your body, and may necessitate surgical removal or drainage in severe cases. Yet, you can treat many benign cysts with home remedies to encourage natural drainage, reduce swelling and alleviate pain.

A chalazion, also known as a "meibomian" cyst, affects your upper or lower eyelid. This inflammation occurs because of a blockage in the drainage duct of the eyelids oil gland. Treat your infected eyelid with a warm compress to increase blood flow to the area, reduce swelling and encourage drainage from the cyst. Place a warm, damp towel on your eyelid for at least five minutes, four times a day. Gently massage the area around your eyelid with your fingertips several times during the day, and carefully clean it with a baby shampoo once daily until the infection ceases.

Bakers Cyst

Also known as a "popliteal" cyst, a Bakers cyst is a fluid-filled swelling that affects the area around the knee. A problem with your knee joint or its connective tissues such as a cartilage tear or arthritis can lead to this painful condition, which worsens when you flex your knee. Rest your knee as often as possible by elevating it, and minimize physical activity to prevent pain in the knee joint. Place an ice pack on the affected area to reduce swelling. Wrap compression bandages around your knee to provide support for your knee joint. Relieve knee pain with over-the-counter (OTC) medications such as ibuprofen or aspirin.

Bartholin's Cyst

A Bartholin's cyst affects women and results in an accumulation of pus in either of the Bartholin's glands, which are located on each side of your vaginal opening. Relieve the discomfort associated with small Bartholin cysts by taking sitz baths until you experience relief. Half-fill a tub with warm water and sit in it three times a day to encourage the cyst to drain.

Pilonidal Cyst

Generally prevalent in men rather than in women, a pilonidal cyst occurs at the base of the tailbone. The cyst forms a pus-filled abscess that resembles a pimple, and depending upon the severity of the symptoms, may be accompanied by fever, pain or inflammation around the base of the spine. Prevent the pilonidal cyst from growing and alleviate the pain by taking warm baths until your condition improves. Control the pain and inflammation with OTC pain-relieving medications.

Negative Side Effects of B Complex on the Skin

Negative Side Effects of B Complex on the Skin

B complex vitamins are necessary for maintaining proper metabolism, regulating the nervous system, heart health, fighting stress and in general, keeping the body healthy and operating smoothly. B complex consists of eight vitamins: B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9 and B12. Any side effect of any one of these vitamins can be a side effect of the total B complex vitamin. Although doctors sometimes prescribe B complex for skin conditions such as acne, it can also cause negative side effects to the skin, especially when taken in high dosages.

Flushing, or reddening of the face, is a common reaction to Vitamin B3, or Niacin. Therefore, taking Vitamin B complex, which always includes Vitamin B3, can also cause flushing. This is a normal side effective that is not harmful. It may be annoying and undesirable to the person experiencing the flushing, but don't be alarmed. The flushing should subside within a few hours. If this is the only side effect, you can assume it is caused by the Niacin. If other symptoms exist in addition to the flushing, see your doctor to evaluate the cause of each symptom.

Itchy skin can be a side effect of the B complex vitamins. If the itching is mild and not too bothersome, you can soothe it with creams that prevent dry skin. If the itching is present with other bothersome symptoms, talk to your doctor about cutting down the dosage of Vitamin B complex to see if that eliminates the itching. If the itching becomes worse and turns into a rash or hives, this is a severe allergic reaction and you need to call your doctor.

Rash or Hives

Occasionally, people may experience a rash or even hives after taking B complex vitamins. Though this is a recognized possible reaction to the vitamin, it is not a normal reaction or one the body may overcome as it becomes used to the vitamins. If a rash or hives occur, seek immediate medical attention. Not only do rashes and especially hives cause considerable suffering, they can be indications of a more severe allergic reaction to come, such as difficulty breathing.

Numbness or Tingling

Doctors prescribe B complex vitamins to reduce the incidence of numbness or tingling of the skin. So if numbness or tingling continues after taking B complex vitamins for a period of time, call your doctor. Certainly if tingling or numbness was not present before, but starts only after you've begun to take B complex vitamins, that can be a side effect of the vitamins. Call your doctor promptly. He may prescribe a lower dosage, or he may decide your body cannot tolerate the vitamins. Numbness and tingling are not considered "normal" side effects of Vitamin B complex.

Turmeric, Honey And Lemon Face Treatment

Turmeric, Honey And Lemon Face Treatment

A face that is clear, glowing and radiant signifies both beauty and good health. There are a number of easily accessible, natural ingredients which can be used to gently clean and moisturize the sensitive skin on your face.

Skin Problems

Your face can be plagued by a number of problems, including dry, flaky skin, or oily, acne prone-skin. Using washes and moisturizers to help combat these problems is helpful in creating a glowing, clear complexion.

Turmeric, an exotic spice, has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial qualities which make it a good choice for soothing inflamed skin and creating a healthy glow. Indian brides have traditionally incorporated the use of turmeric to achieve radiant skin by either rubbing the dry spice over their skin and washing it off, or creating a facial wash with milk and turmeric.

Honey has been used for many years in skin care regimens because of the abundance of naturally occurring vitamins and minerals, and natural moisturizing properties, which are beneficial to facial skin. Honey also has natural anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties which encourage clear, hydrated skin.

Lemon is found in many facial treatment recipes because of its ability to brighten skin and counteract acne breakouts. According to Dr. Randall Neustaedter, OMD, who practices in homeopathic and oriental medicine in Redwood City, CA, acne can be treated with lemon juice which can be applied directly to the face with a cotton ball, allowed to sit for ten minutes, and then rinsed away with warm water.

Facial Treatments

Many washes and masks can be made using these natural ingredients. Combine honey, lemon juice and a bit of vegetable oil into a paste and apply for ten minutes. Wash away with warm water to hydrate dry skin. A combination of milk and turmeric can be applied to the skin, left on for 10 to 20 minutes, and then washed away, to help lighten and even out skin tone.

Alternative Therapies for Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's disease can literally transform a vigorous body into an unrecognizable one. The person afflicted with this disease undergoes a series of physical and mental changes, none pleasing to the eye. The study of Parkinson's disease is ongoing, with researchers constantly finding new forms of alternative treatments.

Parkinson's Disease

When the neurons (nerve cells) in the brain malfunction or die, a disorder in the brain erupts. Dopamine is a critical chemical produced by these cells--it causes the body to move with fluidity. When 80 percent of dopamine-producing cells are destroyed, it results in Parkinson's disease. Symptoms include imbalance, trembling, stiffness and slow movement.

Alternative Therapy

Alternative therapy is a common practice among those afflicted with Parkinson's disease. According to The Harvard University Press Family Health Guides (Written by Nutan Sharma M.D and Elaine Richman Ph.D, Published 2005), at Johns Hopkins Medical School and Boston University School of Medicine, a study was conducted among 201 patients. The results showed that 40 percent of these patients had incorporated alternative therapy with traditional treatment.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E produces antioxidants, which combats the highly reactive chemical species (free radicals) that the body and brain forms naturally during metabolism. Vitamin E is a natural ingredient in many foods (plant foods and eggs), and can be used as a food supplement to help the brain combat the free radicals, hence preventing the progression of Parkinson's disease.

Coenzyme Q10

Commonly referred to as CoQ10, Q10 and vitamin Q10, Coenzyme Q10 is automatically generated by the body. It is an antioxidant, and therefore shields cells from the devastating effects of free radicals. Researchers believe that Coenzyme Q10 reduces the decline of Parkinson's disease in patients. At a study conducted at the University of California, 20 participants were given 1200 milligrams of coenzyme Q10 daily for 16 months straight. Based on the Parkinson's disease rating scale, these participants scored much higher than those who consumed a lower dosage.

According to the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA), massage therapy is becoming increasingly popular. Some patients of Parkinson's disease admit that massage therapy helps to relieve muscle rigidity and allow them mental and physical relaxation. Swedish massage is the most common type of massage therapy. Using kneading and long strokes, the therapist stimulates surface muscles.

Exercise Modalities

Since Parkinson's disease is a disorder of the body's motor system, poor posture is one of the key symptoms. Because of the lack of physical balance, the patient is susceptible to falling. Researchers came up with fall prevention interventions such as exercising and walking to help keep the joints in place.

Most people with severe diseases, such as Parkinson's disease are often anxious to find effective treatments for their ailment. However, they should query the following with their physician before indulging in any form of therapy: What are the benefits to be derived? What are the risks? Are there any side effects? Will therapy interfere with conventional treatment? And do the benefits outweigh the risks?

Advantages of Air Ionizers

Although controversial in regards to how successfully they affect health, air ionizers are still used by many people in countries around the world. Air ionizers purport to clean the surrounding air by using a high voltage to generate negative ions, which then precipitate many of the harmful positively charged particles in rooms, such as allergens and bacteria.

Air ionizers are designed to clear the air of allergens to promote easier breathing. Air ionizers work by releasing negative ions into the area, which will come in contact with floating positively charged allergens. The claim is that the bonding of the two will cause them to become too heavy to remain airborne, which will cause them to fall to the ground---making inhaling them less likely.

Mold, Dust, Bacteria, and Smoke

Much like how air ionizers remove pollen, these items remove an assortment of common household problems, including mold, dust, bacteria, and smoke, say manufacturers. By removing these materials, not only do an air ionizers promote healthy living, but these products are supposed to benefit those that are suffering from chronic diseases, such as asthma.

Dry Atmospheres

Air ionizers are considered more effective in dry atmospheres and are recommended for people desiring purer air in such a climate. Humidity above the level of 80 percent can impact the successful function of air ionizers.

Manufacturers claim air ionizers help people to sleep much better. One reason for this benefit is due to the help a successful ionizer provides the body---allowing it to sleep without the interference of pollen or dust. Air ionizers are also very quiet; therefore, they can operate without creating too much noise at night.

Healing Properties of Neem Oil

Healing Properties of Neem Oil

Neem oil is a vegetable oil that comes from the seed kernels of the neem tree. The neem tree and neem oil have many benefits and uses. According to the Neem Foundation, the neem tree is known as the "village pharmacy." Neem oil is widely-recognized in India for its healing properties and is highly regarded for its medicinal qualities.

Skin Healing Properties

Neem oil is a popular cure for skin conditions such as hives, eczema, psoriasis and acne. Massaging a mixture of neem oil with a carrier oil, like grape seed oil, directly onto the skin is an effective way to receive its healing benefits. Its healing abilities are attributed to the plant's anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Neem oil contains an aspirin-like compound that helps with acne conditions by ridding the skin of acne-causing bacteria. It also helps reduce redness and inflammation.

Fungal Healing Properties

Neem oil has been used to treat and heal fungal infections, such as Athlete's foot, ringworm and nail fungus. Neem oil contains two bio-active compounds, nimbidin and gedunin, that have anti-fungal properties and can effectively kill fungus. Using a few drops of neem oil, with grape seed oil as a base, can heal and prevent future fungal infections.

Hair and Scalp Healing Properties

Neem oil has been used as a treatment for dandruff, hair loss and head lice. Neem oil acts as a natural insect and pest repellent. It not only kills head lice, but its emollient properties soothes, nourishes and protects against an itchy, dry and flaky scalp. The use of neem oil with grape seed oil, or any other carrier oil, as a hot-oil treatment can help reduce shedding and promote thick, shiny and healthy hair.

The Best Way to Treat a Sore Throat

Anyone who has ever had a sore throat knows how painful and frustrating it can be to endure. While a sore throat has many causes and may sometimes require medical attention, depending on the symptoms and severity, there are many simple, inexpensive home remedies that may help.

Causes of a Sore Throat

Causes of a sore throat can include viruses, flu and sinus drainage. Bacteria, such as the type that causes strep, can contribute and cause other symptoms as well. Breathing through the mouth can also cause the throat to dry out, resulting in painful soreness.

Generally a sore throat is nonthreatening and can be allowed to run its course over a few days to a couple of weeks using simple at-home remedies to treat the symptoms. However, for some viruses and bacteria, or a sore throat lasting more than two weeks, medical treatment may be needed to cure the cause of the symptoms.

Easy Remedies

Preventing dehydration is key, as the throat needs to stay properly lubricated at all times to avoid soreness. Besides this, there are many easy, at-home remedies that can be used to treat the pain and symptoms of a sore throat.

Throat sprays and lozenges can provide relief for a few hours and can be bought at most drug and grocery stores. There are also nasal sprays that may aid in relieving sinus drainage that may be causing the sore throat symptoms.

Gargling with one tsp. of saltwater every hour may help relieve swelling and discomfort.

Use a vaporizer or humidifier, which may help symptoms by moistening the throat and nasal passages. If you do not have a vaporizer or humidifier, use a shallow pan of water to provide moisture in the air through evaporation.

Take two over-the-counter acetaminophen or ibuprofen to help control the pain.

Do not smoke or use other tobacco products, as this can further irritate the throat.

Mix a cup of warm water with two tsp. honey and lemon juice, and sip.

Take plenty of vitamin C and zinc. Both will boost your immune system, and zinc will help the symptoms clear up faster.

Many remedies also involve the use of cayenne powder or chili pepper ground and mixed in with one tsp. of water and gargled every hour. This has also been known to aid in clearing the pain faster.

How to Choose Diuretic Herbs for Home Remedies

How to Choose Diuretic Herbs for Home Remedies

Water retention in the body is an abnormal condition, caused by premenstrual syndrome, high blood pressure, circulatory problems and other underlying medical problems. Medically, it is referred to as edema. Edema in itself does cause discomfort and swelling. Duiretics are substances that help increase the flow of fluid from the body. Below are some herbs can that can help to remove liquid from the body.

Use dandelion as a natural diuretic. Dandelion is used in herbal medicine as a general health tonic, and is considered to be a natural diuretic. Its diuretic action aids the elimination of fluid and toxins from the system via the urine.

Prevent water retention with lemon. Lemon is not only a diuretic, but can also help with other urinary problems, such as urinary tract infections and high levels of uric acid.

Increase urine production with linden herb. The diuretic substance in Linden is found in the flower of the plant.

Detox the body with stinging nettle. Stinging Nettle is often used as a "detox," a method of cleaning the body of toxins. Its diuretic action makes nettle very useful in this process. Like lemon it has many benefits for the urinary system.

Prepare yarrow herbal remedies. Yarrow is an herb that has action on many processes in the body. Its diuretic properties make it useful in the treatment of high blood pressure and improving circulation.

How to Get Rid of Motion Nausea

How to Get Rid of Motion Nausea

Motion sickness affects many who travel in planes, trains, cars or boats. Some people get motion sickness on carnival rides such as Ferris wheels or roller coasters. When the inner ear, eyes and body send mixed sensory signals to the brain, which often happens during prolonged fast-paced movement, the brain becomes confused. This confusion causes nausea, dizziness, headaches and cold sweats associated with motion sickness.

Choose a seat where the motion is smoother or lessened. For example, passengers on the upper deck of a cruise ship are far less likely to feel the rocking motion of the waves than those down below. Passengers in the front seats of cars often do not get as nauseous as those in the back.

Focus on a point in the distance rather than close objects while moving. Staring out at the horizon helps your eyes see what you are moving toward, matching your body's sense of movement. If you focus on close objects such as telephone poles, your eyes will register an extremely fast motion, which triggers motion sickness.

Don't smoke or drink alcohol before traveling. Both activities can worsen nauseous feelings associated with motion sickness.

Eat lightly and avoid spicy, greasy or fatty foods to cut down on nausea. Try sipping on water or ginger ale to help relieve queasiness.

Avoid reading while moving. If your eyes stay fixed on a stationary object while your body senses movement, motion sickness will arise from the sensory disagreement.

Try herbal remedies such as ginger or peppermint teas. Both ginger and peppermint help settle queasy stomachs.

Buy an over-the-counter remedy. Everyday antihistamines have been shown to decrease the effects of motion sickness. Acupressure bracelets increase the pressure on a specific region of the wrist known as Pericardium 6. Proponents of these bracelets say the pressure helps relieve feelings of nausea.

Holistic Treatment of Migraines

Treating migraines holistically means treating the mind, body and spirit together. Some use holistic treatment synonymously with natural or alternative therapies. The common idea is to maintain a balanced health and lifestyle to avoid migraines.

Learn what triggers your migraine headaches, be it a type of food, certain lighting, environmental causes, stress or lack of sleep. Pay attention and keep a journal if you must to keep track of patterns. Knowing these triggers, avoid them or minimize them as much as possible.

Gentle Yoga

A small study done by researchers in India noted that migraine sufferers benefited from doing gentle yoga exercises, yoga breathing and yogic meditation. The study was done comparing a group of people practicing yoga for prevention of migraines and another group receiving education on lifestyle changes as treatment and prevention of migraines. The group practicing yoga claimed migraine attacks occurred less frequently and with less intensity within a few months, whereas the other group claimed their migraines remained the same. Doing yoga during acute attacks may not help minimize pain.

Acupressure, the stimulation of acupuncture points, is used to stimulate points to relieve tension and reduce pain. For a simple treatment, massage areas with the pads of your finger including LI-4, the fleshy portion between your thumb and index finger, GB-20, the depression at the base of the skull midway between the earlobe attachment and the spine, and GB-7 through GB-12, the area above and around the ear. Use the tip of your thumb to apply hard pressure to LV-3, the depression on top of your foot between the tendons of the big toe and second toe and GB-41, the depression 1 to 2 finger-breadths proximal from the knuckle of the little toe on top of the foot. End the session by twirling the little toe and tug on it to release some energy.

The insertion of hair-thin needles along meridians and assorted places on the body can help balance the body. Oftentimes, it relieves the headache or reduces the pain dramatically by redirecting the energy flow, increasing or decreasing blood flow to certain areas, and--as some medical experts believe--stimulating the release of endorphins to relieve the pain. The use of needles for migraine treatment should be left to a professional.

For a natural alternative to taking synthetic drugs, try herbal remedies. Many toot the effectiveness of Feverfew, a plant from the daisy family, as a great anti-inflammatory and preventative herb for migraines. Some believe Feverfew can relieve the blood vessel constriction that causes migraines. Take white willow bark in addition as this herb helps relieve pain and is known as "natural aspirin."

Energy Healing

Pranic healing and Reiki focus on healing the auric body, or the energetic levels of a being. Migraine pain can show as excess energy, blocked energy, even low energy. By using one of these energy-healing techniques, you can re-balance the energy level, clear away excess or stagnated energy, and minimize the migraine pain. Try this basic pranic technique: spread the fingers slightly and sweep them 2 to 5 inches away from the painful area on the head in a downwards direction with intentions of clearing away the pain. With every five sweeps, flick the hands with the intention of dissipating the energy that you have cleared. Do about 100 to 200 of the sweeping motions. For better results, learn about the rules and techniques for pranic healing through the resources provided below.

How to Prepare Essiac Liquid Extract

Essiac liquid extract is prepared by boiling Turkish rhubarb root, slippery elm bark, burdock root and sheep sorrel and steeping the mixture overnight. The extract takes its name from its inventor, Canadian nurse Rene Caisse. ("Essiac" is "Caisse" spelled backwards.) Caisse used the formula to treat cancer patients, but it can also be drunk for your general well-being. When preparing the extract, distilled water is required to keep the mixture free of impurities, and aluminum utensils cannot be used because the metal can adversely react to the herbs.

Blend all of the herbs together in a large mixing bowl with a long-handled spoon.

Measure out 1 cup of the herbs.

Place the remaining herbs in a 16-oz. glass jar with a lid and store them in a dry, dark place for later use.

Pour two gallons of distilled water into a four-gallon stew pot.

Put the pot on a stove burner with the heat set on high.

Bring the water to a rolling boil.

Put the cup of herbs in the water and put a lid on the pot.

Boil the herbs on high for 10 minutes.

    Shut off the stove.

Sit the stew pot on a cold burner and stir the contents with the long-handled spoon to keep them from sticking to the sides of the pot.

Recover the herbs and let them sit overnight for 10 to 12 hours.

Reheat the pot until the Essiac extract is steaming, but do not let it boil.

Shut off the stove and sit the pot on a cold burner for a few minutes.

Have someone hold a large colander over the top of an empty four-gallon stew pot.

Pour the Essiac extract into a colander to strain it.

Sit a funnel in the mouth of a sterilized 16oz glass canning jar.

Use a ladle to transfer the extract from the stew pot into the glass jar.

Sit the lid atop the jar but don't secure it.

Repeat Step 17 and Step 18 until all 16 glass jars are filled.

Let the jars sit and cool to room temperature

Screw on the lids to all the jars.

Store the jars in a dark, cool place.

Uses for Fresh Aloe

Uses for Fresh Aloe

People have used the aloe vera plant as a natural way to treat a number of medical conditions for centuries. Grown in the Caribbean, South Africa and Latin America, aloe is one of the most well-known and commonly used herbs in the US. The plant is composed mainly of water but also contains glycoproteins and polysaccharides that are useful in reducing pain and inflammation, and repairing and growing skin, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Dry Skin

Dry skin can develop for a number of reasons, including weather with low humidity and low temperatures, regularly taking hot baths and showers and sun exposure. It can cause symptoms such as itchiness, fine lines and redness when left untreated. Gel from the aloe plant has been traditionally used as a moisturizer, and can effectively eliminate dry skin, indicates MedlinePlus.

Aloe gel, found in the middle of the leaf, is often used to treat burns and sunburns, and is a common ingredient in skin care products. Use of aloe gel can ease the pain and swelling that may result from burns, and may shorten the period of time necessary for healing, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. A person should use aloe to treat only minor burns. Severe burns require medical attention.

Seborrheic dermatitis, commonly referred to as dandruff, can be caused by oily skin, failure to shampoo regularly or sensitivity to certain hair care products. It causes the scalp to itch, and flakes of dead skin fall from the scalp. Aloe gel, applied to the skin, can effectively treat dandruff, according to the Mayo Clinic website.

Canker Sores

Canker sores, small lesions that form in the mouth near the bottom of the gums, can be treated with aloe. The sores can result from a number of causes, including an allergic response, minor injury or weakened immune system. Putting aloe gel on a canker sore can speed healing, suggests the Health website.

How to Hypnotize Anybody

How to Hypnotize Anybody

Many people are attracted by the subject of hypnosis, and it is easy to see why. Hypnotism crosses the barrier between something that is entertaining and also therapeutic. Some people are fascinated because they see themselves as being naturally resistant to hypnosis, others wonder if they could possibly hypnotize another person. Hypnotism can help people become more positive and eliminate bad habits, such as smoking. Opinions vary widely on its effectiveness. There is also a dangerous edge, in that charlatans can set themselves up as hypnotists and exploit vulnerable people. You should always use this ability for positive purposes.

Talk to your partner before you begin the session. Always refer to the other person as your partner, as you do not want to encourage a power relationship by calling her a "subject." Explain that this will be a positive experience and that if she feels uncomfortable at any point you will stop the session. Ask her to lie down and close her eyes.

Speak slowly, in a soothing rather than a monotonous tone. Time your words with your partner's breathing. Ask her to focus on particular parts of her body, telling her to imagine them as warm and heavy. Start with her toes, and work slowly up her body. Tell her that she is going deeper and deeper into relaxation. Tell her that this is a good, safe feeling and that she will wake feeling positive and energized. Repeat this message during the session.

Tell your partner that he is going deeper and deeper into relaxation. Slow your voice a little more and say, "With every word I utter, you will sink deeper and deeper, letting go . . . sinking deeper and deeper into relaxation and letting go of worries and stresses." Give positive suggestions, such as telling him that he will deal with problems in a positive, calm way, and that he will wake up feeling refreshed.

Tell your partner that you will count backward from five, and that when you reach one, he will open his eyes and be completely awake. When the hypnosis has finished, ask your partner for feedback so you can learn what went well and improve any weak areas before the next session.

What Is in Standard Process Catalyn?

Standard Process Catalyn is a multivitamin designed to give consumers the purest form of the nutrients they seek. The dietary supplement contains several vitamins and minerals, along with whole foods produced to maintain the vital nutrients. The formulation of the content in this multivitamin is what makes it distinct.

Standard Process Catalyn is a whole food multivitamin with several vitamins and minerals to serve as a nutritional supplement. It was introduced in 1929 by Dr. Royal Lee. Catalyn was named to represent its catalytic reaction. Catalyn contains vitamins, minerals and enzyme complexities. All of these are presented in their natural state for complete nutritional benefits.

The purpose of Catalyn is to produce a supplement using whole food ingredients, rather than incomplete, isolated nutrients. These nutrients come in a single dose, three times per day, in their natural state. Maintaining a multivitamin in its natural state, ensures vital nutrients will remain.

The recommended dose of Catalyn is three pills per day. That dose will yield these essential vitamins:
    Vitamin A--1,200 IU
    Vitamin C--4 mg
    Vitamin D--312 IU
    Thiamine--.2 mg
    Riboflavin--.2 mg
    Vitamin B6--1 mg

Whole Food Blends

As stated, Standard Process Catalyn is not simply a multivitamin, but a blend of vitamin and nutrient-rich whole foods. These foods all contain specific nutrients our bodies need each day. These foods include: defatted wheat germ, carrot root, calcium lactate, nutritional yeast, bovine adrenal, bovine liver, magnesium citrate, bovine spleen, ovine spleen, bovine kidney, dried pea juice, dried alfalfa plant juice, oat flour, soybean lecithin and rice bran. There are 766 mg of these foods in each daily dose.

FDA Approval

Catalyn is regulated by the FDA, however, not directly. Being a dietary supplement, it is regulated through the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA).

Natural Cures by Cleansing Colon

The colon is the end portion of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and is responsible for the absorption of water and minerals and formation and elimination of waste. An unhealthy colon can impair proper functioning and result in many health ramifications such as sluggish metabolism, digestive problems (constipation and stomachache), weak immune system, skin problems and even irritable bowel syndrome. It can also increase risk of colon cancer, the second most deadly cancer. To restore health to your body, it is essential to have a clean colon and that can be achieved by using natural means.

Why Colon Cleanse?

A healthy colon is inhabited by 85% or more of the good bacteria, otherwise known as probiotics. The two main kinds are acidophilus and lactobacillus. However, unhealthy foods, unhealthy lifestyles, and certain medications can diminish the microflora of good bacteria, allowing bad bacteria and yeasts in the colon to proliferate and cause many health problems, such as those mentioned above. Certain foods, herbs, and lifestyle changes can restore healthy bacteria.

Probiotic Foods

A scientific definition of probiotics is: "A live microbial feed supplement, which beneficially affects the host by improving its intestinal microbial balance." Probiotics work to introduce good bacteria into the digestive tract and to boost the immune system. Naturally probiotic-rich foods include yogurt, kefir, Yakult Probiotic drink, fermented soy (tempeh), Japanese Miso, fermented vegetables such as Kimchi and sauerkraut, onion, garlic, and bananas. Incorporate these foods into your daily diet to increase good bacteria in your colon.

Certain herbs are endowed with cleansing properties to eliminate toxins and kill bad bacteria in the colon. Psyllium is one of the most popular natural cleansing herbs. According to holistichelp.net, psyllium boasts high levels of a fiber, called mucilage, which helps to absorb water and trigger contractions of the colon, making it easier to get rid of waste. It also helps to strengthen intestinal lining. Another powerful herbal cleanser is Cascara Sagrada, an ancient Native American remedy. It contains anthroquinones, a chemical that works as a laxative and it also strengthens the muscle tone of the colon. It also works to stimulate bile production in the liver to get rid of toxins in the body. Both these herbs are available in the dried form, which can be brewed as tea. You can also find them in liquid extracts or supplements. Psyllium is often used in high-fiber cereals as well.

Other herbs include ginger, cayenne pepper, fennel, senna, garlic, and aloe leaf. Some can be included directly in your diet like ginger, cayenne pepper, and fennel, while others can be found in extracts or as supplements.

The power of fiber cannot be underestimated---fiber acts like a broom, spring-cleaning your GI tract of pathogens. Fiber-rich foods abound, and including them in your diet can promote colon health. According to Mayo clinic, dietary fiber found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes prevents constipation and reduces risks of intestinal problems such as hemorrhoids, irritable bowel syndrome, and the development of small pouches in the colon, known as diverticular diseases.

Enjoy a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. Eat brown rice, lentils, barley, split peas, black beans, whole grain cereals and pasta, nuts, and seeds. Consider using a variety of legumes and vegetables to make vegetable soup and eat it in place of hefty servings of meat and carbohydrates.

Fasting gives your body a chance to rest and get rid of stubborn toxins already present in the body. Often, juice fasting is recommended over total fast (just water). Gabriel Cousens, M.D., author of Conscious Eating, explains that juice fasting has the advantage of adding vital minerals and micro-nutrients, which further aids the cleansing process.

Juice fasting involves juicing a variety of organic fruits and vegetables and drinking them during the duration of the fast. Fruits and vegetables are high in antioxidants, phytonutrients, and fiber and they not only clean out toxins, but help to generate cell renewal. Always consult your physician before going on a fast.

Natural Ways to Clear Up Face Rash

A face rash can be a localized rash that is only present on the face and not anywhere else on the body or the extension of a rash from other parts of the body. The main causes of a localized rash are bacterial infections and skin sensitivity, but there can be other causes. Rashes can be painful or itchy and vary in color from brown, purple, red or white. They can be raised, flat, dry or moist, and commonly include swelling and blisters. Treatment depends on the root cause of the rash.

Rosacea usually affects the cheeks, chin and nose. It reddens the skin with a burning sensation and often has small pimples. The causes are most often spicy food, drinking alcohol, exposure to too much heat or sun and getting upset. There is no cure for Rosacea, but the effects can be reduced naturally. Use SPF 15 or higher sun block, avoid scrubbing the face, stay cool and use cool compresses if needed. Also, any extreme temperature is harmful, and avoid alcohol-based face products and hot drinks, spicy food, caffeine and alcoholic beverages.

Poisonous Plants

Poison oak, sumac and ivy have a sap resin that is highly allergenic and can cause allergic rashes in most people who touch it. Flush with water at the first sign of a rash and only after that, use soap. Using soap first will spread the resin to other areas of the body. Cool water and cooked oatmeal compresses for 20 minutes several times a day relieves the itching and inflammation.

Acne is the inflammation of the hair follicles and oil-producing glands of the skin. It begins in puberty for about 80 percent of all teenagers. Skin cells are not shed normally so they block the hair follicles trapping the sebum that forms there. Bacteria, which is normally in the hair follicle multiplies and forms a pimple. Dr. Jeffrey Dach, from wellsphere.com, has found that vitamin therapy works to eliminate acne. Pantethine or Vitamin B5, when taken in large doses or combined with L-Carnitine to reduce the dosage, removes the acne. These speed up fatty acid metabolism and reduce oil build-up in the skin, which is the main cause of acne.

Heat Rash

Overheating causes several skin problems generically called heat rash. It can disappear within a day but may cause a burning sensation. To relieve the symptoms, wash your face with a mild soap several times a day. Stay in a cool place with plenty of ventilation. Go somewhere that you can rest in air conditioning if it isn't possible at home. Apply packages of frozen food or cool packs for 20 minutes every hour. Drink plenty of water to cool and rehydrate the body. Do not apply fragranced lotions or creams to your face until the rash is gone.

How to Use Flaxseed Oil as an Anti-Inflammatory

How to Use Flaxseed Oil as an Anti-Inflammatory

Omega-3, sometimes referred to as the "good fat," is an essential fatty acid that we need in order to live. This compound is important to our heart health. It can lower cholesterol, reduce our risk of cancer and act as an anti-inflammatory agent. Because our bodies cannot make omega-3, we rely on the foods we eat to supply us with what we need. Flaxseed oil has more omega-3 than any other food source. People who have arthritis, lupus, gout and other causes of inflammation may benefit from the anti-inflammatory properties of flaxseed oil.

Consult your doctor before you use flaxseed oil as an anti-inflammatory medication. Herbal remedies, like prescription medications, may interact negatively with another medicine you may be taking.

Incorporate 1 to 3 tbsp. of flaxseed oil into your diet on a daily basis. Mix it with juice, yogurt, cottage cheese or hot cereal. The oil has a nutty taste that can complement some of your favorite foods.

Use flaxseed oil capsules for an easy, portable way to supplement your diet. Drink at least 8 ounces of water when taking the pills.

Sprinkle ground flaxseed on your fruit, cereal, salad or bake it into your bread. In addition to reducing and preventing inflammation, flaxseed provides you with fiber, which is not found in the oil. Use an electric coffee grinder to crush the seeds or buy them already ground.

Store your flaxseed products appropriately. Keep flaxseed oil in the refrigerator, as it becomes rancid very quickly. Whole flaxseed can be stored a cool, dry place for up to one year, while unused ground seeds should be refrigerated or frozen.

Make a flaxseed poultice to reduce inflammation such as muscle aches. Create a loose paste with flaxseed flour and hot water. Dip a soft cloth into the mixture and apply to the injured area.

Recognize side effects or possible allergic reactions from taking flaxseed and its oil. They include itching, hives, sneezing and nasal congestion, nausea, diarrhea and trouble breathing. Call your doctor promptly if you experience any of these symptoms.

Problems With Homemade Colloidal Silver

Problems With Homemade Colloidal Silver

Silver has a long history of medical uses, particularly as an external anti-bacterial agent. Doctors provide silver nitrate drops to newborns to treat conjunctivitus. Others use silver sulfadiazine to treat burns. Colloidial silver is an alternative medicine for internal consumption. It consists of tiny particles of silver suspended in liquid. Colloidal silver is touted by companies like Colloidalsilver.com to help cure or prevent sicknesses from the common cold to HIV/AIDS.

How Colloidal Silver is Supposed to Help

Makers of colloidial silver discuss the anti-bacterial benefits of silver in general. Realcolloidialsilver.com, for example, talks about how people put silver dollars in milk to try to keep it fresh longer or how "being born with a silver spoon in your mouth" stemmed from efforts to keep babies healthy. The company claims that their process of creating colloidial silver is safe, scientific.

Problems with Colloidial Silver

One of the major potential side effects of colloidal silver is a condition known as argyria. The condition results from the potential overuse of colloidal silver products. It causes the skin to permanently turn gray or blue. It may also interfere with the effectiveness of antibiotics such as Cipro. Realcolloidalsilver.com claims that this problem is caused primarily by homemade colloidal silver, using regular tap water, and that their processing methods prevent this condition.

Science and Colloidial Silver

According to the Mayo clinic, no scientific evidence supports claims that colloidal silver prevents or cures any diseases or ailments. Evidence does find that continued use of this alternative therapy causes seizures or other neurological issues, kidney damage or skin irritation. Stomach stress, tiredness and headaches are other symptoms from the use of colloidal silver.

The Food and Drug Administration Stance on Colloidal Silver

Since 1999 the FDA has ruled against companies that claim that colloidal silver will cure or prevent health problems. It has issued many statements and alerts against the use of colloidal silver. A consumer advisory as late as October 2009 warns against the use of the alternative medicine due to the potential for argyria. The FDA continues to study the claims of companies selling colloidal silver.

How to Use DMSA Chelation Therapy

DMSA stands for meso dimercaptosuccinic acid, which the FDA has approved for removing metals from the brain and other tissues. DMSA chelation therapy also involves taking capsules rich in sulphur, a bonding agent for heavy metals.

Send a urine sample to a reputable lab to have it tested for metals. Contact Mayo Medical Labs at (800) 533-1710 for information on how to choose a lab.

Locate a licensed practitioner if the test results reveal heavy metals in your body. Visit sites like Holistic Networker, LLC for additional information or to find a chelation therapist.

Follow your therapist's instructions. Although DMSA capsules effectively remove metals, they also remove minerals in the process. Minerals like magnesium, manganese, calcium, potassium and zinc are essential to maintain proper heart rhythm and other functions. Your therapist may suggest that you stop chelation in order to replenish vital minerals.

Treat symptoms like fatigue, memory loss, autoimmune disorders, viral infections and muscle problems by removing heavy metals through chelation therapy. Microbes may hide behind metals in the body, making it impossible for killer cells to destroy them.

Herbs for Crohn's Disease

Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel condition characterized by chronic inflammation of the intestinal tract. It causes a host of problems in the intestinal area; malnourishment is also a possibility since it inhibits the proper absorption of nutrients. Herbal therapies can address its symptoms.

Important Information about Herbal Therapy

Herbs can be useful in treating many conditions. To achieve optimal effectiveness, you must be diligent about taking them. Unlike pharmaceutical agents, they usually take a bit longer to begin working, so consistent use is important. Be patient and give them time to work for you. It can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to see full benefit. While most herbal medicines are generally safe, like drugs, they contain certain chemicals and compounds that can interact with other drugs and herbs. For this reason, it is always a good idea to consult with a health care provider experienced in herbal supplements to design a safe and effective treatment regimen.

Herbs for Crohn's Disease

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, there are not a lot of studies examining herbal treatment for this condition. The following list of herbs has a long history of use in addressing issues with the digestive tract, particularly inflammation. Since many herbs offer similar benefits, it is not necessary to take all of them. Again, herbal therapy is an aspect of natural medicine where consulting with an experienced professional is useful. The medical center does not recommend herbal therapy as a sole means of treatment.

Slippery elm forms a protective layer of mucus that shields irritated tissue from inflammation and encourages healing. Take 60 to 320 mg daily or mix 1 tsp. of powder with water and drink three to four times daily. Marshmallow tea performs a similar function and also protects mucous membranes. Steep 2 to 5 g of dried leaf or 5 g of dried root in 1 cup of boiling water for 5 to 10 minutes. Strain and drink up to three times a day. Do not use marshmallow if you have diabetes.

Cat's claw fights inflammation; take 250 mg daily. According to a review of studies by the University of Maryland Medical Center, turmeric and boswellia might be useful specifically for Crohn's disease. More research is needed to fully determine if there is benefit. Take 1 to 2 g of curcumin daily and 1,200 mg of boswellia daily for no longer than eight weeks at a time.

Complements to Herbal Therapy

Any proponent of natural health strategies will tell you that a holistic approach is necessary, meaning you need to address all aspects of your health and not just treat the symptoms of the condition. In addition to herbal therapy for Crohn's, you might want to consider doing some other things that can alleviate the symptoms.

Your diet is a very important part of managing this condition. Fruits and vegetables are loaded with nutrients and antioxidants that fight inflamamtion; if fiber worsens your symptoms, bake or steam vegetables and stay away from high-fiber fruits like apples. Lessen stress on your digestive system by eating five or six small meals a day rather than three large ones.

Reduce or eliminate your consumption of foods that worsen Crohn's disease like dairy, high-fat foods and spicy foods .Stay away from alcohol and caffeine.

Stress can aggravate your symptoms. Do your best to manage it. Experiment with yoga, meditation, deep breathing, positive visualization and anything else that makes you feel better.

Home Remedies to Cure Head Lice

Getting rid of head lice needn't be a traumatic experience. It will still take time and plenty of perseverance, but with home remedies it won't take a lot of money. Some of these home remedies are even good for your hair and will leave it shinier and silkier than ever.

Tea Tree Shampoo

Many people claim that tea tree shampoo is effective in both treating head lice and as a preventative. Tea tree shampoo is available at health food stores, drug stores and online. To use, shampoo your hair with tea tree shampoo and leave on your hair for 20 minutes. Rinse hair then remove nits (eggs). Repeat every day, if needed.

Mayonnaise works by smothering the lice. The vinegar in mayonnaise help loosen the nits from the hair shaft. Coat the hair with mayonnaise. Use enough to get down to the scalp. Make sure the hair is completely soaked, or the lice will simply migrate to an untreated area. Cover hair with a shower cap and leave alone for three to six hours. Rinse out the mayonnaise, shampoo hair as usual, then remove the nits.

Olive Oil

Using olive oil on your hair has the same effect as using some of the pricey hot-oil treatments. First, coat your hair with olive oil, making sure to get the oil all the way down to the scalp. Cover hair with a shower cap and leave alone for three to eight hours. Lice can survive for two hours when coated, so try to leave the olive oil on for as long as possible. Squeeze the excess oil out of the hair, add shampoo, and work into a lather. Rinse. You may have to wash hair a couple of times to clean off all of the olive oil. Remove nits.

Some people report success with vinegar rinses. Vinegar helps loosen the glue that attach the nits to the hair shaft. Soak dry hair with white vinegar, paying special attention to avoid getting in eyes. Let vinegar stay in hair for ten minutes. Rinse and comb out nits.

Lice and nits are both killed by heat. Use a hot comb or curling iron (not a blow dryer, as that could blow the lice off the head), and go over the entire head. Try to get as close to the scalp as possible, but not so close to get burned. When done, comb through the hair with a nit comb to remove the dead lice and nits as below.

The nits must be removed, or they will hatch and start a new infestation. Nit combs are available in stores, in the same section as the commercial nit preparations. Put a towel over the shoulders to catch any falling lice or nits. Beginning at the crown, comb slowly through small sections of hair from the scalp outwards. Trying to comb through thicker sections will only prevent the nit comb from doing its job. Keep the nit comb clean as you work by rinsing it in soapy water. After each section is combed through, pin it to top of head. Continue around the head and down until all hair has been combed through. When done, immediately wash the towel in hot water.

Witch Hazel Pros & Cons

Witch Hazel Pros & Cons

Witch hazel is a native North American shrub grown in low damp woods. Its other common names include winterbloom, wych-hazel, snapping hazel, tobacco wood, hamamelis and striped alder. The word "witch" is derived from the Anglo-Saxon "wych" meaning "flexible," as the branches could be bent to make bows. It produces yellow flowers in the fall and typically grows to between 8 and 20 feet tall. The leaves, twigs and bark contain tannins and a volatile oil which is distilled to make witch hazel extract. Witch hazel is used to treat a variety of ailments, from sore feet and hemorrhoids to sunburn and headaches. However, relatively little clinical research into witch hazel has been done in the United States, and its use requires caution as it should not be ingested.

Astringent Properties

Witch hazel is used to treat many medical conditions. Its astringent properties promote the healing of skin and the reduction of swelling and inflammation. It is used to treat insect stings, oily skin, sunburn, windburn, eczema, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, acne and mouth and throat infections. It rapidly stops bleeding and is used to stop inwardly-bleeding piles as well as heals bruises. Tightening the skin proteins to repair the skin, witch hazel also protects against infection, as seen in the treatment of skin lesions. Research from Asia shows that the tannins in witch hazel account for its strong antioxidant properties.

Gels and Creams

Witch hazel is available in various forms but is usually administered as a liquid, gel or cream. An infusion of witch hazel, preserving the tannin astringents, is either mixed into a gel ointment base or used directly to treat a wound. It may be used as a compress to treat bruises, headaches, wounds, sores and hemorrhoids. Witch hazel pads and suppositories are also effective postpartum treatments. The soothing antibacterial properties of witch hazel calm inflammation and promote healing. Witch hazel can be used by women to treat hemorrhoids during pregnancy.

Witch hazel infusions are gargled to treat throat and mouth infections. However, care must be taken not to swallow the solution, as the tannin content can cause digestive complaints. Teas are brewed from leaves and twigs which are dried, then sold commercially in health food stores. However, their medical effectiveness and safety have not been investigated. Witch hazel contains small amounts of safrole, a potentially cancer-causing substance banned from foods by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in the 1960s. As of 2000, research had yet to be conducted into the danger of safrole in witch hazel products.

Adverse Side Effects

Witch hazel should only be used externally. Undistilled witch hazel contains tannins which cause digestive irritation. If ingested, nausea, vomiting, constipation and impactions may occur. Extreme consumption can cause liver damage. Distilled witch hazel -- hamamelis water or witch hazel distillate -- does not contain tannins and is most commonly used directly on the skin. However, it can cause minor skin irritation in some individuals. If this occurs, it should be diluted to lessen its astringent effects. Be cautious when using witch hazel and, if pregnant, consult a physician before using the product.

How To Reduce Arteriosclerosis

Blood vessels that transport nutrients and oxygen from your heart to the rest of your body are called arteries. Normal and healthy arteries have elastic and flexible properties. When your arteries become hard and lose elasticity, it is medically termed arteriosclerosis. This condition can restrict blood flow. Arteriosclerosis is caused by fats that accumulate in the outer or inner the walls of your arteries and can cause a heart attack or stroke. However, arteriosclerosis is a treatable and preventable condition. By employing natural preventive measures, you can effectively avoid arteriosclerosis.

Reduce your cholesterol level if it is elevated. Consume a reduced-fat, reduced-cholesterol and high-fiber diet. Foods that can help you reduce cholesterol include walnuts, oat bran, apples and kidney beans.

Do therapeutic yoga. Yoga exercises strengthen your heart, enhance blood circulation and improve your capacity to do other exercises. Consult a yoga instructor to learn about exercises specific to preventing heart disease, particularly arteriosclerosis.

Quit smoking and avoid second-hand smoke. Tobacco products constrict arteries, reduce your blood's capability to hold oxygen, and intensify the possibility of forming blood clots like emboli and thrombi.

Eat raw garlic. This herb is one of the top natural herbs for the treatment and prevention of arteriosclerosis. It contains the potent compound allicin, which prevents plaque from accumulating in your arteries. It also purifies your blood and enhances vascular supply and circulation.

Exercise every day. Exercise prevents arteriosclerosis by speeding up your blood circulation, which inhibits plaque from accumulating in your arteries. Exercise at least 30 minutes every day.

How to Compare Ionways & Enagic With Research

Ionized water is water that has been treated with electrolysis, which many people claim makes it healthier to drink. Ionized water is supposed to help neutralize free radicals, as well as enhance the blood's ability to transport oxygen to all parts of the body. There are a number of different brands of water ionizing machines out there, but two of the most popular brands are Kangen, from Japan, and the Ionways, formerly known as Jupiter. If you're not sure which one best suits your needs, then researching both brands can help you choose.

Compare the setups of the two ionizers and what materials they use to accomplish the ionizing process. All models use electrolysis, pulling apart the acidic and alkaline contents in the water so that you have two, separate streams. Enagic uses solid plates of titanium coated with platinum, the main metals for the electrolysis process, but the Ionways only has a titanium mesh that's coated with platinum. The mesh is cheaper, but ultimately can't hold up to as much use as the solid plates.

Compare the outputs. Both Enagic and Ionways produce ionized water that is the same as any other variety of alkaline water according to AlkaViva, an authorized distributor of IonWays ionizers. However, due to the construction, the Enagic water ionizer is meant to be used as a constant filter, and it doesn't set a limit on water amount per day. Ionways sets the limit at 3 gallons of ionized water per day because the mesh can only handle that much in a short period.

Compare pricing. If you want to drink healthy water, but you are on a limited budget, the cheapest model is offered by Ionways at roughly $600. On the other hand, Enagic's cheapest model is around $1,200, but it can produce much more water than the Ionways can.

Examine all the other features of the Ionways and Enagic. Once you've chosen your particular models from either brand, examine what they come with. Technical support, insurance, additional features like bottles and storage, product guarantee and a warranty are all sections you should examine to see what the company currently offers for new purchases. Up-to-the-minute information on both of these may be found at Enagic and Ionways respectively.

How to Treat Flatulence With Fennel

How to Treat Flatulence With Fennel

An embarrassing and uncomfortable gastrointestinal malady, flatulence can cause us to avoid some of the healthier choices in our diet. Beans, soy and cruciferous vegetables frequently cause flatulence. Fennel is a natural flatulence treatment described in ancient Roman texts and recognized by the medical community today. You can use fennel whenever flatulence strikes without worrying about side effects or building up tolerance.

Use fresh fennel bulbs and seeds for cooking and tea. The volatile oils that help the body to expel gas dissipate as fennel ages. The efficacy of the 6-year-old jar of fennel seeds on your spice rack is low.

Add fennel to your stews, salads and casseroles to reduce their gassy effects on you. Fennel imparts a sweet flavor to dishes akin to licorice. It pairs especially well with Italian dishes and sausage entrees.

Chew on a fresh stalk of fennel after your meal. An amount the size of a postage stamp contains enough volatile oils to prevent gas.

Prepare hot tea with whole fennel seeds. Crush the seeds briefly with a mortar and pestle to express the volatile oils. Add tsp. of crushed seeds to 1 cup boiling water. Strain after steeping for 10 minutes. You can drink this tea after each meal.

Ask the doctor about offering fennel tea to a colicky infant. People have used fennel for centuries to produce "gripe water" to calm gassy babies.
