Milk Thistle for Blood Cleansing

Milk thistle contains silymarin, a chemical considered helpful in protecting the liver. Because of this, milk thistle is used for blood cleansing, especially useful in modern times where our bodies are under siege from various environmental toxins. This powerful alternative medicine helps to cleanse the blood of toxins, along with treating liver diseases such as hepatitis and jaundice.

What It's Good For

Milk thistle is most commonly used to treat various liver diseases. Not only can it treat chronic liver diseases, it also works as an excellent cleanser for the liver by flushing out toxins and maintaining proper functioning. Ultimately it is the liver's job to cleanse the blood in the body. If the liver is not functioning at full capacity, blood may become contaminated with toxins that are not completely removed by the liver. Keeping the liver healthy allows it to fully cleanse the blood and is important in maintaining health and vitality.

How to Take

When using milk thistle to cleanse the blood, there are a couple of options. Milk thistle is available in either pill form or liquid form. Both work equally well in cleansing the blood. Keep in mind that the liquid extract of milk thistle is not very tasty, so you may opt for the pill form. The standard dose of milk thistle is based on the amount of silymarin content. Standardized extracts are preferred, look for between 70-210 mg, and take three times a day for good results. Best results are achieved in the higher dose ranges of about 140 mg, three times a day.

Side Effects

Milk thistle has been shown to have few side effects. Widely used in Europe, silymarin preparations have low evidence of toxicity. Because silymarin enables cholerectic activity, it may lead to a looser stool because of increased bile flow in the liver and secretion. While using higher doses it may be appropriate to incorporate some bile sequestering fiber such as psyllium and oat bran into the diet. This will prevent mucosal irritation and loose bowel movements. However, because of the overall lack of toxicity associated with milk thistle, it is feasible to use on a long term basis to cleanse the blood and maintain a healthy liver.

Natural Antibiotic for a Sinus Infection

A sinus infection occurs when the hollow cavities in the skull become infected by viruses, fungi or bacteria. Sinus infections usually follow a bout of the common cold or allergic rhinitis and may include symptoms like sinus pressure, headache, stuffy nose, dizziness, sore throat and fever. While treatment with antibiotic medication is the only proven cure for a sinus infection, there are a variety of natural remedies that can ease symptoms and help speed recovery.

Herbal Antibiotic Remedies

Natural antibiotic preparations can be taken in a variety of forms, including oral supplements, steam inhalation mixtures and topical applications. The oral route of administration is the most direct and is only suitable for herbs that aren't toxic when taken internally.

Garlic is among the most popular oral sinus infection remedies. According to MedHerb.com, allicin--the active compound in garlic--has the broadest range of antimicrobial properties of any compound known, killing parasites, bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoa alike. Cayenne pepper is an excellent nasal decongestant, and oregano oil can be taken internally for its potent antibiotic and antifungal properties.

If steam or vapor is your chosen method of administration, eucalyptus and tea tree oils are two excellent choices. Tea tree has potent antibacterial and antifungal properties, while eucalyptus is great for opening nasal passages and soothing a sore throat. To make an herbal steam inhalation with these herbs, dissolve two drops of tea tree oil, teaspoon of vapor rub with eucalyptus and clove of garlic in boiled water and inhale for three minutes.

Tea tree oil can also be added to lotions or body creams and applied topically, as can cayenne powder. Cayenne contains the pain-killing substance capsaicin, which can ease the aches and pains that often accompany sinus infection.

Additional Support

To heal a sinus infection as quickly and completely as possible, it's important to boost immune function however you can. Aim for at least eight hours of sleep each night and take naps as needed until you are well. Eat as healthfully as possible, and take a daily multivitamin plus extra vitamin C for its immune stimulating properties. Avoid allergens like mold and irritants like cigarette smoke, and rinse nasal passages with a neti pot or similar apparatus daily.

Safety Considerations

Sinus infection is a serious condition that can lead to sepsis, brain inflammation or death if not properly treated. The only cure for a sinus infection is treatment with antibiotic medications. See a doctor immediately if you think you have a sinus infection.

How Is Hypnosis Done?

How Is Hypnosis Done?

What Is Hypnosis?

When most people think of hypnosis, they picture an unwitting volunteer made to cluck like a chicken or carry out some other such foul instruction. Despite the stereotype perpetuated by stage performers, however, the reality of hypnosis is far more subtle, its foundation far more secure, and its potential for healing virtually limitless.

Hypnosis occurs naturally everyday without any use of gold pocket watches or magic words, because hypnosis is a mental state, not an act. Anyone who has focused on something so intently they lost touch with the world around them has experienced hypnosis to some degree. The fascinating thing about those altered states of hyper-awareness is they're also usually associated with heightened suggestibility.

Applications

Using hypnosis as a medical alternative has come a long way since the days of Franz Mesmer and his work with animal magnetism. States of hypnosis have been documented as successful treatment of irritable bowel syndrome and, amazingly, as an alternative to chemical anesthesia during otherwise painful surgical operations. Numerous other ailments have been treated in the hypnotic state, from allergies and smoking cessation, to phobias and deep psychological trauma. Hypnosis is commonly used to address overeating, insomnia, nail biting, stress and lack of confidence. It's also used to instill positive, resourceful feelings, motivation, and the ability to learn.

Hypnotic Induction

    Milton Erickson

Numerous schools exist to teach various forms of hypnotherapy, and some states, such as California, are more receptive to the practice. While hypnosis may be induced in any number of ways, there are two main approaches. The Ellman induction is similar to what most would expect from a stage hypnotist: soothing tones that speak of relaxation and suggest a descent deeper and deeper into hypnosis. Many practitioners read from or memorize a script at first, but with a little practice this technique can be improvised to be effective on most subjects. The Ericksonian approach, named after famed hypnotist Milton Erickson, is more challenging because it relies on metaphor and seeming non sequitur to access the powerful drives in the subconscious mind.

Some people will say they can't be hypnotized, and it's true that through conscious effort most people can resist hypnosis. Everyone, however, will enter some level of hypnosis naturally, and will be receptive to suggestion once they abandon resistance. Even self-hypnosis can be achieved with relative ease when you're open to the idea.

Study of the Effects of the Color Green on Health

Study of the Effects of the Color Green on Health

Color therapy or chromotherapy is an ancient tradition that was practiced for thousands of years by the Chinese, the ancient Egyptians and many other societies. It is still practiced today and recently has moved from alternative to mainstream medicine. Color therapy is the idea that colored lights can be used to affect a person's mood, energy and overall health. Each color is said to have its own specific effect on humans.

The Central Chakra

The meditative effects of the color green can help us balance ourselves emotionally.
The meditative effects of the color green can help us balance ourselves emotionally.

Chakra is an energy system which some believe exists within us. There are seven major chakras which each have a different influence within our body. The green chakra sits in the chest, where the heart is. Thus, followers of the chakra believe the color green relates to emotional issues and that surrounding ourselves in green will have a calming effect on us. It is often worn by meditation gurus and yogis to help balance themselves emotionally.

Green and white light therapy have been very effective in treating SAD.

Also known as the winter blues, Seasonal Affective Disorder is a depression which occurs in some people with the onset of winter, when there is less sunlight. To treat this condition, people are placed in "light rooms" where they are exposed to bright green and white light for up to two hours a day. According to the Psychology Department at the Vanderbilt University, light therapy successfully reduces a person's depression in the fall and winter months.

Treating Depression and Bipolar disease

Although it remains controversial, more scientists are agreeing that light therapy can help patients with depression.
Although it remains controversial, more scientists are agreeing that light therapy can help patients with depression.

Originally, scientists believed that light therapy was only effective in treating people with Seasonal Affective Disorder. However, according to a study published in Science Magazine, white and green light can be used to treat depression and even bipolar disorder. There have since been several studies into this and, according to Science Daily Magazine, light therapy has been shown to ease bipolar depression in some patients.

According to the American Journal of Nursing, the color green is effective in treating fatigue in patients. This is because it has a soothing and relaxing effect on the eyes. Just looking at a green colored page can help people to feel at ease and less tired. Unlike some other colors, green is easy on the eye, particularly in darker shades.

How to Build a Cayce Wet Cell

Edgar Cayce was a 20th century man who allegedly had powers of clairvoyance which he demonstrated during sleep-like trances. During these trances he also gave detailed instructions on how to build certain devices, among them what is now known as an Edgar Cayce wet cell battery. This battery consisted of two metallic rods, one copper and the other nickel, placed in an electrolytic solution inside a two-gallon container. Dudley Delaney, nurse and chiropractor, believes that using this battery can treat or cure ailments such as arthritis or multiple sclerosis, chiefly by instilling energy into a person's body.

Instructions

    1

Don safety glasses and gloves. The electrolytic solution, in its final form, is not terribly dangerous but the sulfuric acid used in the mixture is caustic in its pure form.

    2

Prepare a table top and place all the components atop it. This work space should be near a working tap or faucet in case your skin accidentally comes into contact with the acid.

    3

Sand the copper and nickel rods until they are bright and very clean. Their ability to conduct current will be impaired by any sort of corrosion or uncleanness. You will probably have to repeat this step every month to clean off corrosion that has accumulated in the electrolytic solution.

    4

Attach the red battery terminal to one end of the copper rod. Attach the black battery terminal to one end of the nickel rod. The copper rod's terminal is for the positive charge and the nickel rod's is for the negative charge.

    5

Fasten the copper and nickel rods to the lid of the 2-gallon container, keeping the rods separate from each other and from the sides of the container. The terminals at the end of each rod should be pointing down into the solution once the lid is in put in place.

    6

Pour 1.5 gallons of distilled water into the open container. Follow this with 2 lbs. of copper sulfate, 6 oz. of sulfuric acid, 10.6 grams of zinc and 1/2 lb. of willow charcoal. Add them in that order.

    7

Stir this compound with a wooden stick until it is thoroughly mixed. Place the lid on the container.

What Are the Benefits of Taking Flaxseed Oil at Bedtime?

What Are the Benefits of Taking Flaxseed Oil at Bedtime?

Many people look to more natural means of health care than taking prescription pills. Certain oils have properties that make them beneficial in warding off illnesses. Flaxseed oil stands at the forefront because of its vast array of health benefits. Before embarking on a natural health venture, check with your doctor to make sure there will be no adverse effects.

Fatty Acid Intake

Flaxseed oil has a very high concentration of omega-3 essential fatty acids, as well as a healthy amount of omega-6 fatty acids. Omega-3 and omega-6 are used by the body in many ways, and can reduce the risk of heart disease.

Intestinal Benefits

Flaxseed oil contains plenty of dietary fiber. Because of this, taking flaxseed oil reduces the incidence of constipation as well as that of hemorrhoids. Taking flaxseed oil can soothe intestinal inflammation, and may help reverse damage done to the intestinal tract by diseases such as irritable bowel. Flaxseed oil may also prevent gallstones and dissolve any gallstones that are already present.

Skin, Hair and Nail Care

Acne, psoriasis, dry skin and eczema can all be treated with flaxseed oil. Flaxseed oil has anti-inflammatory properties that can help with skin disorders. If the skin is sunburned, flaxseed oil may help it heal faster. Components in flaxseed oil cause skin oil to thin out, which reduces clogged pores that can lead to acne. This oil also promotes healthy hair and nail growth, making hair shinier and keeping nails from splitting and cracking.

Cancer and Dry Eye Prevention

Flaxseed oil contains lignans, which play a role in preventing forms of cancer such as breast, colon and prostate. Flaxseed oil may also help treat existing cancer, as shown by research conducted by the University of Toronto. Flaxseed oil also controls the risk of dry eye in those with Sjogrens syndrome. Sjogrens syndrome is a condition in which the immune system attacks the bodys moisture glands, such as salivary and tear glands.

Circulatory and Nerve Health

Diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids may decrease the risk of heart disease and heart attacks. Flaxseed oil can also reduce high blood pressure and control cholesterol. Flaxseed oil is sometimes used to treat numbness and tingling. This may be useful for people suffering from Parkinsons disease, diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

How to Use Saw Palmetto to Treat Bronchitis

How to Use Saw Palmetto to Treat Bronchitis

With more people seeking natural remedies as alternatives to side effects-laden drug treatments, saw palmetto has emerged as a versatile, effective healer. Bronchitis is one of many conditions you can use saw palmetto for, as it may have some beneficial effects on the body's breathing passageways.

Instructions

    1

Meet with an alternative medicine authority and discuss the potential benefits of using saw palmetto to treat bronchitis. It has anti-inflammatory properties, which can aid the treatment of the irritated bronchioles which cause bronchitis.

    2

Consider saw palmetto to treat the causes of bronchitis, but not necessarily the symptoms. You should not expect it to provide immediate, short-term relief from coughing and wheezing. Instead, take over-the-counter or prescription cough medicines to alleviate symptoms.

    3

Learn to read labels carefully. You need to take between 160 mg. and 320 mg. of standardized saw palmetto berry extract each day to get enough of the plant's active ingredients. Some capsules will provide a full dosage in a single pill, while others may have smaller proportions of active ingredients.

    4

Use saw palmetto according to the directions given to you by your doctor or a natural medicine expert. Though saw palmetto use is considered safe and users frequently experience no side effects, some people complain of mild stomach irritations, bowel movement disruptions and bad breath.

    5

Stop taking saw palmetto immediately if you develop irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, liver and pancreatic inflammations or profuse bleeding when you cut yourself. While it is unclear whether saw palmetto can ever cause these conditions, anecdotal evidence suggests there might be a connection.

How to Use Neuro Linguistic Programming to Change Behaviors

How to Use Neuro Linguistic Programming to Change Behaviors

With its roots in the human potential movement of the 1970s, the neuro linguistic programming self-help curriculum seeks to induce change in behaviors by altering mental "maps." It seeks to change how we view our experiences: past, present and future. Supposedly, a person reshapes his or her map through modeling, matching behavior and outlook to those of successful people. It is said that people can use NLP to change bad behavior like overeating, smoking, nail-biting or excessive drinking.

Instructions

Find Out if NLP is Right for You

    1

Search the Internet for information on the history and practice of NLP. The NLP Basics Web site is a great place to start (see Resources below).

    2

Think about the behaviors in your life that you would like to change. Add these to your search criteria to find out how NLP addresses these problems.

    3

Try some of the exercises you find at the NLP Marin Web site (see Resources below). Focus especially on those exercises involving guided imagery.

    4

Determine in your own mind how comfortable you feel with this experience. If you are "turned off" or "don't get it," NLP may not be the best choice for you.

Decide How to Use Neuro Linguistic Programming

    5

Gather the facts you have learned about NLP in relation to your own needs. Test out those techniques that can safely be self-taught. For instance, you can learn a popular technique known as "the Swish" at the Speak Like a Pro Web site (see Resources below). You can practice basic eye accessing cues at the Smart Driving Web site (see Resources below).

    6

Seek out a practitioner if your particular behaviors are best addressed by professional help rather than self-help.

Choose a Practitioner and Change Your Behaviors

    7

Write down any questions you would like to ask a practitioner about NLP and your particular goals.

    8

Use a directory (telephone or Internet) or ask a friend to help lead you to a practitioner. Contact one or more of the people listed, preferably by phone, and ask your questions.

    9

Make an appointment with the person who seems most satisfactory.

    10

Cooperate fully with your practitioner for best results.

    11

Expect private sessions to range in price from moderate to expensive.

How Does Relaxation Breathing Help?

How Does Relaxation Breathing Help?

Breathing in a controlled pattern, like that in pranayama yoga, is thought of as a way to bring in energy. This energy can be used for healing, relaxation and meditation.

Healing

Yoga is used in the art of pranayama. In yoga, breathing goes along with the movements of the body into different positions. This type of breathing is healing because, according to the book "Pranayama & the Art of Breathing," it stimulates the nervous system.

Stress Relief

Meditation is a highly recommended form of stress relief. According to "The Directory of Complementary Therapies," the focus put on breathing in order to relax during meditation can slow the heart rate and be of great value to those who suffer from high blood pressure. Meditation also gives the body time to unwind and forget about daily troubles, which is why it helps relieve stress.

Oxygen Intake

Relaxation breathing also helps regulate oxygen intake. This can help someone who suffers from panic attacks or even insomnia. Concentrating on breathing rather than the thing that is disturbing the body can help one forget and relax. Deep breathing exercises, like those used in labor, can help reduce the effect of panic attacks, according to "The Directory of Complimentary Therapies."

Foot Spa Detoxification

Foot spa detoxification has become a popular treatment at spas, but could be expensive if done on a regular basis. Buying your own foot spa allows you to detox your body in the comfort of your home, at any time. While shopping for your own detox foot spa, it is important to find a quality product at an affordable price, as opposed to finding the cheapest option.

What is Foot Spa Detoxification?

Toxins accumulate within the body due to a poor diet of processed or refined foods, pollution and stress. Detox allows the body to release toxins that cause a lack of energy, poor circulation, joint pain and tension, lack of sleep and harm to the immune system.

Using foot spa detoxification, impurities are drawn out of the pores in the feet. Using a foot spa is more effective than other forms of body detox, due to the higher amount of sweat glands located on the feet.

Detoxing foot spas incorporate ion charges to attract negative or positive charges from the body, helping to release them from the bloodstream. Once toxins are released, individuals experience more energy, a boost to their immune system and healthier skin.

Frequency of Foot Detoxification

By having a foot detoxification spa in the home, you are able to release toxins from the body more frequently and economically. You should do a foot detox every other day for 14 sessions, and then refrain from detoxing for a week. For those over 50 years old, the suggested usage is one detox every three days for 14 spa sessions, and a two-week break in between detoxifying.

After Foot Detoxification

After you have completed a session of detoxing, drink plenty of water to flush out any remaining toxins from the body. It is also suggested that you take a daily vitamin and mineral supplement to keep valuable minerals within the body, since some may be released with the toxins during the foot spa detoxification. Natural minerals attach to toxins or harmful metals in the body, so detoxing may reduce the amount in the body.

To keep the body balanced and healthy after a foot spa detox, refrain from smoking, drinking alcohol and eating foods high in sugar and salt and get daily exercise. Incorporate fruits and vegetables into the diet to get important vitamins, minerals and fiber.

Alternative Medicine or Treatment of Alcoholism

Those who are facing an addiction to alcohol have a very difficult struggle eliminating alcohol from their lives. A variety of treatment options is available for alcoholics to help them with their issues. Alcoholics who have tried many different treatment options and failed can still find help with an alcohol treatment plan that uses alternative medicine approaches.

Acupuncture

The Eastern practice of acupuncture is used in the treatment of alcoholism and drug addiction to restore inner balance and calm. Eastern medicine teaches that alcoholism and drug addiction is a response to an inner fire or turmoil that the alcoholic or drug addict attempts to quell with the use of alcohol or drugs. Acupuncture is used to restore calm so that alcohol is no longer needed.
Acupuncture treatment for alcoholism also extends to relieving the symptoms of withdrawal. In a 1987 study of 80 alcoholic men in Minnesota, the men were treated with acupuncture while a control group was treated with acupuncture in different therapeutic points. Ninety-three percent of the group being treated with alcohol dependence acupuncture was able to complete the program while only 2.5 percent of the control group was able to complete the program. The control group also had more frequent relapses than the treated group in a six-month follow-up to the study.

Dietary Supplements

Dietary supplements are an important part of alcohol withdrawal treatment. There are medical disorders that coincide with alcoholism that are related to malnutrition and impaired absorption of nutrients because of poor diet or changes in the digestive system from excessive alcohol use.
Minerals are often deficient in alcoholics and supplementation with magnesium can improve the experience of withdrawal symptoms. Nutrients such as thiamine and folic acid are also deficient in many alcoholics and should be supplemented during alcohol withdrawal, as well.
A multivitamin that also contains folic acid should be given during alcohol withdrawal to help lessen the symptoms of withdrawal and prevent medical conditions resulting from malnutrition.

Herbs

Calamus is an herb that is used to help alcoholics resist the craving for alcohol. It is used as a tea to treat alcoholism and can also help to increase appetite in alcoholics.
Kudzu also works to reduce cravings for alcohol when used as a tea. Kudzu extract also comes in a capsule form and one or two capsules should be taken twice a day in the treatment of alcoholism.
Passion Flower added to an herbal regimen for alcoholism will reduce anxiety, insomnia and paranoia, which are symptoms of alcohol withdrawal and addiction. Passion flower comes in capsule or tincture.
Quassia helps the alcoholic overcome a loss of appetite. It should be taken cold and it is found as a tincture or the herb can be soaked in cold water, strained and consumed in one-ounce doses three times a day.
These herbs are part of an overall regimen to ease the withdrawal symptoms that occur when stopping alcohol consumption. Medical personnel should monitor alcohol detoxification in all cases. Some alcoholics will require hospitalization while others can be treated on an outpatient basis. Discuss all of the herbal remedies you are using with the doctor while being treated for alcohol addiction.

Positive Thinking and Healing

Positive Thinking and Healing

Positive thinking can have an overall positive effect on your physical health. The Mayo Clinic says that when you use positive thinking, it helps you handle problems in a more positive way. If you are having health problems, positive thinking can reduce your stress and promote healing because it supports your health and well-being. You can overcome health issues and prevent more problems in the future by maintaining your positive outlook.

Effects

The Mayo Clinic says that positive thinking can support healing in a number of ways. It fights depression and anxiety and allows you to build up healthy coping skills. When the body is under less stress, it is better able to focus its energy and efforts on healing. Positive healing also strengthens immunity, which helps fight certain illnesses. For many people, it lessens unhealthy habits and behaviors like smoking and overeating that can impair healing.

Methods

The main method to use positive thinking for healing is to replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Many people focus on the negatives and blow up problems in their minds. They imagine that the worst case scenario will happen. They also find ways to blame themselves, adding guilt to their overall stress. Positive thinking can be used to do a reality check that removes blame and puts the problem in a realistic perspective.

The Mayo Clinic says that positive self-talk can be used throughout the day. If you catch yourself drifting into negative thoughts, stop yourself and immediately replace them with something positive. Even if your mind state is neutral, occasionally make the effort to find something positive on which to focus. Remind yourself that focusing on upbeat thoughts will help you heal and support your good health.

You should also surround yourself with positive people who support your upbeat state of mind. This will help you maintain a good mind state that supports your healing.

Frequency

Positive thinking should be used on a daily basis to have the maximum effect on healing. Many people get into a habit of negative self-talk. Positive thinking must be used consistently in order to break this habit. Eventually it will become your default thought pattern, but it takes time to replace ingrained patterns. If you willfully change negative thoughts to positive ones, eventually it will become your automatic reaction. Keep in mind that it takes 21-28 days to change a habit, so be patient with yourself.

Information on Organic Apple Cider Vineger

Information on Organic Apple Cider Vineger

A two-part biological fermentation process that converts sugars into acetic acid accounts for the creation of all vinegars, including organic apple cider vinegar. Organic apple cider vinegar ranges in price from about $2 to $5 for a 16-oz. bottle.

Features

Organic apple cider vinegar contains the nutrients calcium and phosphorous. Traditionally used as a cleansing agent, organic apple cider vinegar can be purchased undiluted as well as premixed into commercial drinks for easier consumption.

Benefits for Diabetics

A 2007 study published in "Diabetes Care" demonstrated that type 2 diabetics who ingested 2 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar along with 1 oz. of cheese before bedtime had reduced fasting glucose levels the next morning.

Misconceptions

While apple cider vinegar has been touted as a weight-loss tool, Mayo Clinic nutritionist Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D. says this is unlikely, given the lack of scientific evidence to back this claim.

Theories/Speculation

Purported (but scientifically unproven) health benefits of ingesting apple cider vinegar include lowering blood pressure, fighting infections and reducing symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and heartburn. Proponents claim that organic, raw and unfiltered apple cider vinegar yields greater health benefits due to less processing and fewer potentially harmful pollutants.

Ways to Fix Wrinkles Without Surgery

One of the most discouraging aspects of aging is the loss of elasticity in your skin, which produces wrinkles on your face. The good news is that, unlike other muscles in the body, your facial muscles are attached directly to your skin. So by exercising your facial muscles, you can reduce many of those annoying wrinkles without having to resort to surgery.

Facial Exercises

Several facial exercises, presented by Thomas V. Hagerty at ShapeYourFace.com, have been found to be helpful in reducing wrinkles. For each of these exercises, it is recommended that you begin by moistening the skin with water, oil or a facial moisturizer.

Fixing Wrinkles Around The Eyes

The area around the eyes is often the first place wrinkles form, because the skin there is the thinnest and most delicate on your body. The simplest way to exercise the muscles surrounding the eyes is to wink. But for this exercise, you'll close your eye only part-way, because closing it tightly may deepen those crow's feet instead of remedying them. Hold the wink for one second, open your eye wide, and then repeat the wink. Depending on your comfort level, do up 50 reps of this wink on each eye once or twice a day.

Fixing Wrinkles on the Front of the Neck

The front of the neck is another area that shows the signs of aging early on. Start this exercise in either a sitting or standing position. Tilt your head back slightly, keeping your chin and nose centered. Press your tongue firmly against the roof of your mouth. This will tighten all the muscles along the front of your neck. Keeping your tongue against the roof of the mouth, lower your chin toward your neck. To check if your form is correct, make sure the muscle at the top of your neck directly below your chin (known as the platysma muscle) feels tense as you raise and lower your head. Repeat the exercise as often as you like; just be careful not to overwork the muscles.

Fixing Forehead Wrinkles

Exercising your scalp is very effective in treating forehead wrinkles. Unfortunately, this is also the most difficult facial exercise. There are two basic movements to this exercise. The first involves raising and lowering your eyebrows, using the muscles at the front of your head. The second motion involves contracting the muscles at the back of your head, causing your ears to move back and forth. If you're having difficulty doing this second motion (women find it harder than men), try lying down with your head on a pillow. By feeling whether your ears move against the pillow, you can tell if you're contracting the correct muscles. This will help you gain more control as you practice. Doing only five to 10 repetitions won't do much for you. Try to build up to roughly five minutes of repeating this exercise.

How to Make Warm Pillows

Warm pillows are handmade pillows that have been filled with rice or other dry ingredients. The pillow can then be warmed in the microwave an placed on the body to relieve aches and pains. These soothing pillows can also warm up a cold bed on a winter's night. Regardless of how you use them, warm pillows are an easy craft project. Look for remnant fabric at your local fabric store for an inexpensive option.

Instructions

Process

    1

Cut two rectangles from each of the different fabrics. The rectangles should measure 10.5- by- 21 inches.

    2

Put the patterned outside cover fabric aside.

    3

Fold the other rectangle in half lengthwise wrong sides together.

    4

Sew across all sides, leaving one side open. Use the smallest stitch possible to prevent rice or corn from slipping out. Pour in 4 cups of rice or dried corn. Add the optional dried herbs at this time as well. Sew up the final short end.

    5

Fold the outer cover in half lengthwise, right sides together. Pin together the right sides of the fabric around the edges. Sew together the long sides. Leave the short ends open.

    6

Turn the outer cover inside out so that the pattern shows, and iron to remove any wrinkles.

    7

Insert the plain rice filled pillow into the outer cover. Pin and gather the edges of the short ends to form a seam of about 1/4 inch. Gather the edges of the interior pillow into these seams and pin together.

    8

Topstitch all of the layers together, one short end, then the other. This will prevent the interior bag from slipping.

Nagging Cough Remedies

Nagging Cough Remedies

Experiencing a nagging cough can affect a person's quality of life. People who experience a nagging cough are more likely to be embarrassed to socialize with others, especially for meals or other social activities. According to a New York study conducted by the American Thoracic Society International, more than 50 percent of people who suffered from a nagging cough had reduced quality-of-life scores. This may eventually lead to depression. Some home remedies may alleviate the symptoms associated with a nagging cough.

Causes

A cough is one of the most common ailments for which patients seek treatment from a doctor. A cough is a natural process by the body to remove an object that may be blocking the airway. Coughing can prevent mucus from building up in the airway and prevent bacteria from entering the lungs. A cough may start as a normal cough that usually accompanies a cold or flu, but coughs may continue for weeks or even years, in some case. A nagging cough that won't go away may be caused by acute sinusitis, allergies or post-nasal drip. Other health issues can cause a nagging cough, such as asthma or bronchitis.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a nagging cough may include a tickling feeling in the back of the throat, along with a persistent uncontrollable cough. The coughing may not produce any mucus or phlegm. Sometimes coughs are brought on by a common cold or flu, but after the cold subsides, a nagging cough may persist for weeks, months or longer. Coughing symptoms may become worse at night because of indoor environmental factors that may be triggering the cough. These factors may include dust mites, pet dander, mold or dust.

Remedies

Most nagging coughs can be treated with home remedies. Natural alternatives may take more time than over-the-counter medicine to treat the cough, but such alternatives may yield better results with no side effects. Garlic or garlic oil is known to be effective in treating a nagging cough. Garlic produces an antibiotic compound when crushed or chewed. When combined with lime or lemon juice, honey also can relieve a nagging cough. Honey contains antibacterial properties that helps kill bacteria. Another effective home remedy is thyme, which can be made as a tea to relief cough symptoms.

Prevention/Solution

Certain lifestyle choices, such as smoking or the use of chemical cleaning products, can contribute to coughs. If you are experiencing a nagging cough, you may need to evaluate your lifestyle to see what may be causing it. For example, if you smoke, you may need to stop smoking to eliminate and prevent nagging coughs. If your coughing is caused by sinus allergies, you can use a salt saline mix to clear your sinuses and prevent future allergy symptoms. Some chemicals used in the home, such as air fresheners or air sprays, can irritate the throat. Lemon can be used to deodorize your home without any side effects.

Warning

Although a cough may not be a sign of a serious illness, you should see your doctor if your cough persists, especially if you are experiencing a cough that produces blood or green mucus or if you are having chest pain. A cough left untreated can lead to chronic illnesses such as pneumonia. Based on your symptoms, a doctor can determine if you need antibiotics to treat your cough.

How to Use Cinnamon to Relieve Toothache

How to Use Cinnamon to Relieve Toothache

Cinnamon contains a number of active ingredients that help relieve toothache temporarily. If you develop a toothache but can't get to the dentist right away, use this home remedy to help keep the pain at bay. Do not substitute a home remedy for proper dental care. A toothache is a symptom of a problem that should be dealt with as quickly as possible to avoid complications.

Instructions

    1

Purchase whole cinnamon from the grocery or from a natural foods store. It is available in a tubular form called a quill or stick made from curled bark. If you can't find whole cinnamon, purchase powdered cinnamon.

    2

Break up 1/2 inch of cinnamon quill and powder it in a coffee grinder, if you purchased whole cinnamon.

    3

Measure out 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder and 5 teaspoons of honey into a small bowl.

    4

Mix the cinnamon and honey together thoroughly.

    5

Apply a small amount of the cinnamon-honey mixture directly to your tooth. You can apply it with a clean fingertip, a cotton ball or a small, folded piece of gauze.

    6

Store the remaining cinnamon honey in an airtight jar with a tight-fitting lid.

Homeopathic Remedies for Scirrhinum

Homeopathic Remedies for Scirrhinum

Scirrhinum is a homeopathic remedy used for treating cancer, enlarged glands, hemorrhages, varicose veins and worms. Homeopathic remedies have been practiced for more than 200 years in Europe and the United States. More than 2,500 homeopathic substances, including scirrhinum, are believed to stimulate healing. Many different dosages, potencies and treatment strategies are used, based on individual symptoms. People who practice homeopathic medicine believe that scirrhinum can resolve symptoms and help relieve disturbances in the body.

Dosages and Potencies

Scirrhinum Can Be Purchased as a Small Tablet that can be Placed under the Tongue or Dissolved in Water.

Scirrhinum is typically given in 200c dosage that is "plussed," which means shaken and dissolved in water, alcohol or another liquid. Potency, or the strength of the dosage, is determined by how much it was diluted and plussed. The 200c dose can be purchased at many homeopathic shops and at online retailers. It has been shaken and dissolved to a 1:100 ratio and is considered a potent dose. This dose is often used for chronic conditions, including cancer.

For treating worms, a dose of Scirrhinum 30c is usually given.

Taking Scirrhinum

Scirrhinum, like most homeopathic remedies, may be purchased as a small tablet. Avoid touching the tablets with your fingers, if possible. Pour the small tablets into the cap of the bottle and then pour them directly into your mouth. Or, the tablets can be dissolved in water and then swallowed. Be sure to have a clean mouth that is free of strong flavors as they can interfere with scirrhinum. Toothpaste and caffeine have strong flavors, so make sure your mouth is free of these flavors as well. Place the tablets under your tongue until they are dissolved. It is best to take this remedy at bedtime, when your body will be resting and not close to meal times. Discuss scirrhinum with a health professional before treating yourself.

Where to Find Scirrhinum

Many Health Food Stores Stock Scirrhinum and Other Homeopathic Medicines.

Scirrhinum can be purchased at many health food stores. Finding a local health food store or homeopathic doctor in your area can be a useful resource and a source of valuable information. It can also be purchased online.

Healing with Scirrhinum and Homeopathic Remedies

In his book "Getting in Touch with Yourself, Finding Your Homeopathic Remedy," Frederik Schroyens, M.D., states that a cure is not simply the disappearance of one or several complaints, but an optimally stable equilibrium physically as well as psychologically. Excerpts of his book can be found at wholehealthnow.com.

Scirrhinum can be a helpful remedy on your healing journey.

Fruit Sensitivity Alternative Treatment

Fruit Sensitivity Alternative Treatment

Though you might not have a diagnosed fruit allergy, if you experience troublesome symptoms after a eating a fruit or a family of fruits, you could have a fruit sensitivity. Common symptoms of a food sensitivity include skin rashes, runny nose, mood swings, cramps, bloating, headaches, reoccurring infections and joint pain. (See References 1.) To alleviate your symptoms, consider trying alternative therapies.

Lifestyle Remedies

If your fruit sensitivity symptoms are severe enough, avoid the offending fruit. Sometimes, though, symptoms can be managed with lifestyle changes.

If citrus fruits or tomatoes give you indigestion, limit them. In addition, help gravity out by not lying down after eating these fruits. When you know youre going to be eating citrus, make sure your meal is small, as excess food causes stomach acid to rise back up into your esophagus. Also, The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Women, suggests fasting before sleeping to avoid uncomfortable symptoms at night.

When youve consumed too much of the fruit to which youre sensitive, drink a glass of water every two hours to help flush the allergen out of your system. Also, make sure youre eating a wide variety of foods, as a varied diet will help reduce sensitivities and allergies. If youve recently struggled with a particularly bad bout of symptoms from your sensitivity, consider going on a 24-hour detoxification. James F. Balch and Mark Stengler, authors of Prescription for Natural Healing, say that a juice fast can help rid the body of toxins and allergens. Make sure to use a juice thats of a different family than the offending fruit.

Stress can also suppress the immune system, which will make you prone to fruit sensitivity symptoms. If youre feeling particularly stressed, avoid the fruit that gives you trouble, or work on ways to reduce your stress level.

Supplements to Consider

Take a probiotic supplement to help boost your immune system and help with digestion. Take a supplement that contains at least 4 billion active organisms after a meal. Take this one time a day.

Balch and Stengler say that a Vitamin C supplement with bioflavonoids will also boost the immune system and reduce reactions. Take 1,000 mg two to three times a day.

Finally, consider trying betaine hydrochloric acid, as it can improve the stomachs acid levels. Take one to two capsules with a meal that contains the fruit to which youre sensitive.

When to Call Your Doctor

Though fruit sensitivity symptoms are generally mild, if they increase in severity consider speaking with your doctor. Also, The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Women says that constipation is a symptom of a food allergy, so if you experience this after consuming the suspected fruit, speak with your doctor about a possible allergy. If after trying alternative remedies you are still experiencing troublesome symptomssuch as excessive sneezing, wheezing and/or coughingsee your doctor.

Cranberry Juice Will Clean Out Your System

Cranberries have loads of vitamin C.
Cranberries have loads of vitamin C.

Cranberry juice can help you detoxify your body. It has properties that prevent bacteria from adhering to your urethra, for example. It also has high quantities of vitamin C, so is a great part of a healthy detox diet.

It Will Not Eliminate Traces from Your Urine

While the cranberry juice can help speed up your metabolism, it cannot help you clean out your system in a hurry. You cannot pass a urine test for alcohol or other drugs by taking a heavy dose of cranberry juice beforehand.

Bottom Line

While cranberry juice is good for your metabolism and a good way to help treat a urinary tract infection, it will not clean traces of alcohol out of your system. It can help detoxify your body over the long haul, but is not a quick fix.

Home Remedies for Roundworms

One billion people in the world suffer from roundworms---parasites that take up residence in the intestines. These creatures can grow up to 15 inches long and can lay 200,000 eggs a day. The roundworms create havoc in one's system, including loss of appetite, abscesses in the liver, intestinal blockages, appendicitis, upper abdominal pain, rashes, eye pain, and asthma. Before resorting to medical treatment, try one of the several home remedies available to knock out these parasites.

Diet

During the treatment, adhere to a certain diet. For the first four or five days, eat only fresh fruit. After this, eat light, well-balanced meals incorporating plenty of vegetables, fruit, whole-wheat bread and milk.

Do not eat anything high in oil, cream or butter, and eliminate any products high in fat. Repeat the all-fruit diet to prevent recurrence; if the worms recur, eat uncooked vegetables and drink plenty of fruit juice.

Pumpkin Seeds and Pomegranate

Drink a mixture of 1 tbsp. of skinned and crushed pumpkin seeds with 250 ml of boiling water. Before doing this, empty your intestines by drinking prune juice. The day after the purge, drink three or four glasses of this pumpkin seed juice.

Drink a tea made from pomegranate tree bark to poison and kill roundworms. Consume the tea in amounts of 90 to 180 ml three times for adults and 30 to 60 ml for children, with one hour between each ingestion. Next, purge the intestines with prune juice

Coconut and Garlic

People have used coconut for more years than we can count to fight off intestinal worms. At breakfast time, drink 1 tbsp. of fresh-ground coconut. Three hours later, drink 30 to 60 ml of castor oil and 250 to 37 5ml of lukewarm milk. Repeat until you have flushed out all of the worms.

Garlic, an ancient remedy still used for many health issues, can also help you get rid of roundworms.Crush garlic cloves and wear them in your shoes or socks so it can penetrate through the skin, or simply eat the garlic. Both ways allow the garlic into the blood and then the intestines, killing the worms.

Impacted Stool Home Remedy

While some people believe they are constipated if they don't have a bowel movement every day, this may not be the case. You are usually considered to be constipated if your stool is hard and small, and if you have gone longer than three days without a bowel movement. This type of stool can sometimes cause an impaction (full or partial blockage) in the intestine and needs to be treated as soon as possible to avoid complications.

Softeners, Laxatives and Bulking Agents

Sometimes the best way to move impacted stool is to use a natural stool softener. Rather than simply speeding up bowel activity like some laxatives do, stool softeners work by preventing water from being absorbed out of the intestine during the digestive process. This additional water causes the chyme (digested food byproduct) to be more moist and easy to eliminate.

Natural stool softeners include fruits such as figs, prunes, grapes and berries. Grapes also have a laxative effect. You should include three servings of fruit in your diet each day, which will usually help you avoid impacted stools in the first place. However, if you find yourself in need of help, additional fruit or sugar-free juices may be all you need. By using fruit rather than an over-the-counter stool softener product, you ensure you are getting necessary nutrients and fiber as well as treating your constipation.

Castor oil is often useful for constipation. Pressed from the castor bean, this oil was often given to children as a matter of course for a variety of complaints, including constipation. The belief was that a clean bowel was a healthy bowel. Many people are coming around to this way of thinking again. The longer stool remains in the colon, the more chance there is for unhealthy bacteria to multiply, possibly causing illness. Castor oil, taken according to package directions, can get your system moving again in short order.

Be sure to increase your intake of soluble and insoluble fiber, preferably from food sources rather than supplements. Soluble fiber comes from fruits and vegetables. It assists in keeping enough water in the intestine to keep the stool soft and movable. Insoluble fiber provides bulk to make the stool large enough for the muscles of the intestine to press against so it can be pushed out. The Chinese often prescribe boiled sweet potato before bed to provide both soluble and insoluble fiber.

A Last Resort

If all else fails, you may need to manually break up the stool. This is usually done by a doctor, because it is easy to injure your rectal wall. Gently insert a gloved and lubricated finger into your rectum. Without exerting too much pressure, attempt to mash or break up the stool into smaller pieces. If you experience any pain, stop immediately and consult your physician.

Effects of the Magnolia Bark Herb

Effects of the Magnolia Bark Herb

Magnolia bark is a traditional Chinese remedy that is used in a variety of herbal formulations, such as Banxia Houpo Tang and Hangekobokuto. New research supports the use of magnolia bark in treating conditions such as insomnia, anxiety and cancer. The bark of the magnolia officinalis plant is rich in natural chemicals called honokiol and magnolol, which are believed to be responsible for much of the pharmacological activity.

Anti-Anxiety

Magnolia reduces the symptoms of acute anxiety.
Magnolia reduces the symptoms of acute anxiety.

Magnolia bark helps to reduce anxiety, alleviate tension and calm the nervous system when taken as an herbal supplement. The "Nutrition Journal" published a study in 2008 written by Dr. Douglas S. Kalman and colleagues that showed magnolia bark was effective in reducing some types of anxiety in humans with no adverse side effects. Dr. Kalman did not find that the magnolia bark was effective in treating either long-term anxiety or depression, but found it better suited to treating short-term anxiety. Magnolia bark is best used for supporting acute feelings of anxiety. Readers are advised to speak with their health care provider before combining it with medications.

Sleep

Magniola bark reduces stress and promotes sleep.
Magniola bark reduces stress and promotes sleep.

In 2010, an article was published in "The Journal of Ethnopharmacology" by Dr. Uwe Koetter and colleagues that showed magnolia bark extract stimulated dopamine, serotonin and benzodiazapene receptors. In doing so, magnolia bark mimics natural chemicals in our bodies that support mood balance and relaxation needed for a good night's rest. Dr. Koetter concludes that this scientific finding supports the traditional use of magnolia bark for treating anxiety and insomnia.

Cancer

Magniola bark may have a role to play in cancer treatment.
Magniola bark may have a role to play in cancer treatment.

Several studies support the use of magnolia bark in fighting cancer. In an article published in the journal "Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry" in 2010, researchers Eun-Sun Hwang and Kwang-Kyun Park from Jeonju University in Korea found chemicals in magnolia bark significantly inhibited the spread of prostate cancer cells to other parts of the body. In a second study published in "Anticancer Research" in 2010, researcher S. Chilampalli and colleagues discovered magnolia bark was effective in reducing the risk of UVB-induced skin cancer.

Pain and Inflammation

Magnolia bark helps to reduce pain and discomfort in inflammatory conditions. Researcher Yi-Ruu Lin and colleagues showed in a study published in the "Journal of Biomedical Science" in 2009 that magnolia bark was effective in reducing pain. Chemicals found in magnolia bark, such as magnolol and honokiol, reduce pain through inhibiting the release of a variety of inflammatory chemicals in the body. This pharmacological action means magnolia bark should provide symptomatic relief to sufferers from inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, dermatitis, colitis, burns and neuritis.

Bee Propolis Uses

Bee Propolis Uses

Bee propolis is a natural resinous substance produced by honeybees that consists of secretions of beeswax and resins obtained from the buds and sap of trees. The precise composition of propolis varies greatly between hives in different geographic locations. For this reason, bee propolis ranges in color from dark brown to green, red and white. Since tree resins possess natural germicidal properties, there are several health benefits associated with propolis supplementation, as well as various topical applications.

Minor Burns

A study submitted to the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine by Scott R. Gregory, MSII, and fellow colleagues of the School of Medicine at the University of Texas, showed that bee propolis speeds the healing of minor burns. The study was designed to compare the therapeutic effects of Brazilian propolis skin cream to treatment with silver sulfadiazene on second-degree burns in human subjects. While the research team did not observe any clinical difference in microbial colonization in the superficial wounds between the two treatment groups, they did notice that the group receiving bee propolis experienced significantly less inflammation. In addition, cicatrisation was enhanced, meaning less scarring took place.

According to the National Institutes of Health, initial studies demonstrate that using a mouthwash containing bee propolis may inhibit oral bacteria, reduce inflammation associated with periodontitis and prevent the formation of dental plaque. In addition, Brazilian ethanol propolis extract may inhibit candidiasis of the mouth, while a dental gel consisting of propolis and caffeic acid phenethyl ester appears to lessen dental pain. Andrew Weil, M.D., further notes that bee propolis is being investigated as potential tooth sealant and enamel hardener.

Immune Function

Animal-based and in vitro studies indicate that bee propolis may stimulate the immune system and may deter various viral infections, including herpes simplex virus and intestinal infections caused by Helicobacter pylori. However, as NIH states, more research is needed in this area to support these preliminary findings.

Inflammatory Disease

NIH notes that there is sufficient evidence to indicate that bee propolis exerts anti-inflammatory effects, which suggests that this substance may help to treat various inflammatory disorders, such as rheumatism. Dr. Weil makes a similar reference to this use of bee propolis in his online blog.

Other Uses

Bee propolis is used in the production of chewing gum, throat lozenges, cosmetics, creams, lotions and other types of personal care products. It is also used in the manufacturing of wood varnishes. Bee propolis is also a traditional polish used by makers of musical instruments to highlight the grain of wood. In fact, according to Maaret Toprakci, B.S., of Nutritional Consultants Group, Inc., Antonio Stradivari, the famed maker of the prized Stradivarius violin, reputedly used it.

Dry Mouth Alternative Remedies

Dry mouth is a condition also knows as Xerostomia. Dry mouth symptoms include a sticky and dry feeling of the mouth and tongue, cracked lips, difficulty in chewing or swallowing, difficulty in tasting or talking, mouth sores, frequent bad breath and dentures that do not fit properly. There are things a person with dry mouth can do from home to relieve these symptoms.

Sugar Elixir

A major cause of dry mouth is dehydration. If dehydration is the cause of dry mouth, it is important to restore the electrolytes in the body. A sugar elixir can help by mixing 1 tsp. salt, tsp. baking soda and 1 tbsp. sugar into a cup of water, and add lemon or honey for flavor.

Celery

Celery is waterlogged, and munching on these for a snack can help relieve dry mouth by restoring the saliva in the mouth.

Liquid Food

When dealing with dry mouth, there won't be much saliva in the mouth. Try adding liquids to foods such as gravy, sauce, broth, butter or yogurt.

Parsley

If you are having problems with bad breath associated from dry mouth, parsley can help relieve both. Parsley acts as a breath freshener and has iron, calcium, and vitamins A and C to help relieve dry mouth.

Water

Drink at least 8 8-oz. glasses of water every day to deal with dry mouth and prevent it from getting worse. It doesn't matter if you drink tap water or bottled. Cut back on coffee, soda, and tea and stick with water to help relieve dry mouth.

Purpose of Support Stockings

Support stockings, sometimes known as compression stockings, are made from a strong elastic material; they fit snugly at the foot and are less tight at the knee and thigh. Support stockings help relieve a variety of disorders that affect the legs and thighs.

Function

Support stockings apply pressure that is graded, which allows the constant squeezing of the leg muscles. Worn correctly, support stockings can reduce the swelling in the feet and decrease the chance of blood clots forming in the legs.

Significance

Support stockings relieve the symptoms of varicose veins by reducing the pooling that occurs; this helps reduce aching, swelling, and heaviness. Support stockings are also beneficial for venous insufficiency, lymphedema, and to prevent blood clots in the legs.

Hospital Protocols

According to VeinDirectory.org, the formation of blood clots is a leading cause of death in the U.S. In most cases, hospital protocols recommend that all patients be fitted with support stockings---especially if they are not ambulatory.

Treatment

For venous ulcers, varicose veins and lymphedema, support stockings may need to be worn indefinitely, possibly for life. For patients with an increased risk of blood clots in the legs, support stockings should be worn daily and removed at night.

Warning

Because support stockings decrease blood supply by squeezing leg muscles and driving blood away from the heart, they should not be worn by people who are diabetic, or smokers.

Alternative Medicines for High Blood Pressure

If you are unlucky enough to be diagnosed with high blood pressure, you'll want to find a way to reduce it naturally or risk having to take medication for the rest of your life. While there are diet and exercise changes you can make, there are also alternative remedies you can take to help bring your blood pressure down.

Garlic

Garlic reduces spasms in the arteries by slowing the pulse and reducing pressure there. As a high blood pressure treatment, take raw cloves or two to three garlic-supplement capsules daily. However, garlic can also thin the blood, so it should be taken under a doctor's supervision because it could interact with other medications, particularly blood thinners.

Indian Gooseberry

Indian gooseberry comes from the amla tree in India and contains gallic acid, tannins, pectin and ascorbic acid. The fruit is used in different forms (dried, green, fresh) for different applications. For high blood pressure, mix a tablespoon of fresh Indian gooseberry juice with a tablespoon of honey and take it each morning.

Lemon

Lemon is popular in drinks and cooking, and despite its tartness it is a popular flavor. It is a rich source of bioflavonoids, which help strengthen the capillaries. For high-blood pressure, mix a spoonful of lemon juice with honey and take it every morning. An alternative treatment is to squeeze half a fresh lemon in a glass of water and drink it throughout the day.

Grapefruit

Grapefruit is also a rich source of bioflavonoids that are good for the capillaries. As a high blood pressure treatment, mix a spoonful of grapefruit juice with honey and take it every morning. You can also squeeze half a fresh grapefruit in a glass of water and drink it throughout the day.

Watermelon Seeds

Forget spitting watermelon seeds. Save them, dry them and roast them for a treat. The seeds contain a substance that will dilate blood vessels and help lower your blood pressure.

Massage Treatment for Sinus Pressure

Massage Treatment for Sinus Pressure

Throbbing pain in your forehead, toothache, headache, congestion: sinus pain is unpleasant at best. Workday relief can be difficult since sinus medications can make you tired and a humidifier may not be possible. Massage, however, can provide relief from sinus pain without making you drowsy.

Causes

Sinus pain typically comes from sinusitis, a sinus infection or sinusitis, causing swelling and inflammation of the paranasal sinus cavities or from excessive mucus due to cold or flu.

Symptoms of Sinusitis

The symptoms of sinusitis include pain, especially when bending over or when waking up, headache, toothache, irritability, and puffiness in the face, especially around the eyes. Sensitivity along the sinus cavities of the face and forehead is also a sign of sinusitis.

How to Massage the Sinuses

Place the fingertips at the inner edges of the eyebrows, and lightly press. Work in small circles outward from the middle of the forehead to the temples, controlling the pressure for your own comfort. Anchor your thumbs at the temples and return the fingers to the middle of the forehead. Sweep the fingers up from the brow to the hairline, then across the forehead as though you were sweeping the sinuses clear.

Place the fingers along the sides of the nose close to the eyes. Take a deep breath and as you exhale, press lightly on the bridge of the nose. Hold for several seconds then release. Repeat along the underside of the eyebrows.

Move the fingers next to the nostrils. Press in to the face and hold for a few seconds. Repeat three times, adjusting pressure for your comfort.

Massage the sinus drainage channels using small circles. These channels are located at the underside of the cheekbones and the underside of the jaw from chin to ear. Use light pressure, followed by a sweeping motion along the same path.

When Massage Is Too Painful

If the sinuses are too painful to massage, use your thumbs to press along the back of the neck. Start at the base of the skull and move your thumbs in toward the center. Repeat, moving down the neck. Finally, massage the toes, squeezing from the tips of the toes, along the sides to the base of each toe.

You are working pressure points, which help relieve the pressure in your sinuses without directly contacting them.

When You Shouldn't Massage

You should not massage the sinuses if the cause of the pain is bacterial or viral infection. This is because massage may help spread the infection. Massage should not be done if there is a fever, aches, or an acute sinus infection. Massage is safe for allergic sinus pain and chronic sinus infections, as long as it is comfortable.
