How to Improve Night Vision

How to Improve Night Vision

All of us can improve our night vision and it doesn't require much time or expense. Carrots are an extraordinarily effective method to help do just that.

Instructions

Make or Buy 100% Carrot Juice

    1

Check your juicer's instructions to make sure it will indeed extract juice from carrots. Not all juicers are powerful enough to juice carrots.

    2

Use one very large carrot (peeling first is not necessary) in your juicer or two medium carrots to produce about an ounce and a half or two ounces of fresh carrot juice--all that is needed for the day. Drinking more than two ounces is absolutely fine and is your choice, although it will not speed up the process. You can always refridgerate it (for a day or two) also.

    3

Purchase pure carrot juice from a health food store or a regular grocery store, if you do not have a juice extractor. The cartons are always refrigerated and dated for freshness.

    4

Enjoy sipping your glass of refreshing carrot juice.

    5

Take note of how your night vision (and perhaps your day vision) improves during the week. It may take a few days but you'll be pleasantly surprised! Keep a journal of changes and differences.

Alternative Diabetes Treatment

Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by higher than normal levels of sugar in the blood. People with diabetes either produce insufficient insulin, a hormone necessary for converting sugar into energy, or their body cannot use it properly. Natural treatment strategies are available to address different aspects of the disease. This is a serious condition and you should consult with a health care professional experienced in treating this condition naturally to design an effective regimen and suggest appropriate supplement dosages, especially if you are looking to alternative measures as sole treatment.

Supplements to Lower Blood Sugar

You can use certain supplements to lower your blood sugar. Chromium is one of the best known minerals for positively impacting blood sugar. It can reduce the need for insulin in type 1 diabetes and improve blood sugar levels in those with type 2. The usual dose is 200 mcg daily, but higher doses have been used in studies for diabetes. Talk to your doctor about appropriate dosages.

Magnesium levels are usually low in people with type 2 diabetes but researchers are unsure if this impacts blood sugar or the condition causes the low levels. Research indicates it can improve blood sugar levels. Do not use magnesium if you have severe heart or kidney disease.

Fiber supplement, like beta-glucan and psyllium, can lower blood sugar and improve cholesterol levels. Managing cholesterol is very important if you have diabetes because it increases your risk for heart problems. Eat foods high in fiber, like fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Antioxidants

If you have diabetes, you probably have low levels of antioxidants, which are vital to protecting the body from various types of damage. Replenishing your supply can ease symptoms of diabetes. The most beneficial are vitamin E, selenium and zinc.

Supplements for Heart Health and Diabetic Neuropathy

It is important to take good care of your heart since diabetes makes you more vulnerable to heart attack and other heart problems. Coenyzme Q10, niacin and omega-3 fatty acids contribute to overall heart health while beta carotene, vitamin C and vitamin E can improve cholesterol if you have type 2 diabetes.

If you have diabetes, you have a high risk of developing neuropathy, a painful condition that causes nerve damage. Alpha-lipoic acid and gamma-linolenic acid can alleviate symptoms.

Herbal Therapy

Bitter melon can lower blood sugar. Fenugreek seeds help control blood sugar and their high fiber content can help prevent high cholesterol. Gymnema has been shown to reduce symptoms of diabetes when taken in conjunction with insulin and other diabetes medications.

Other Suggestions

Acupuncture can relieve the painful effects of neuropathy and reduce the need for medications to treat it. Stress raises blood sugar levels and can lead you astray from healthful behaviors necessary for managing your condition, like proper eating. Experiment with different ways to reduce stress like yoga, meditation, and deep breathing.

No matter how you decide to treat your diabetes, diet and exercise are an integral part of treatment. A nutritionist can help you design an appropriate eating plan that is low-fat, high in whole grains, fruits and vegetables and contains an appropriate amount of carbohydrates. If you are overweight and have type 2 diabetes, it is imperative to get your weight under control. Exercise helps regulate blood sugar and improves the efficacy of insulin. Aim for 30 to 60 minutes at least three to four times a week.

Lime Juice Remedies

Although the ascorbic acid in lime juice can sting if it gets into a cut, the component still acts as a healing agent for a variety of ailments. You don't have to worry about calories if you consume lime juice regularly; lime juice only contains 60 to 62 calories per cup.

Mosquito Bites

Soak a cotton ball in a mixture of lime juice and water. Dab the cotton ball on mosquito bites to relieve external itching.

Kidney Stones

According to NutraIngredients.com, people suffering from kidney stones should drink a glass of water with 2 tbsps. of lime juice every day for 10 days. This will prevent new kidney stones from forming.

Dandruff

Rinse your hair with lime juice after you wash it to both get rid of dandruff and to prevent your scalp from flaking.

Weight Loss

According to the home remedies website, Kitchen.RobbieHaf.com, one way to promote weight loss is by drinking a cup of water in the morning with 1 tsp. of lime juice. (You can add some honey if it's too bitter.)

Acne

Mix a few drops of the juice with cinnamon powder to make a paste, and apply it as needed to pimples to dry them out.

Morning Sickness

You can make a medicine for morning sickness by mixing 1 tbsp. of honey with 1 tsp. of mint juice and 1 tsp. of lime juice. Take this dosage three times per day.

The Benefits of Virgin Coconut Oil for the Heart

The Benefits of Virgin Coconut Oil for the Heart

There has been long been a medical debate surrounding whether or not coconut oil is beneficial for the heart. While some experts believe that the high saturated fat content of coconut oil is bad for the heart, others beg to differ stating coconut oil has no trans-fat and therefore healthy for the heart. Whether the oil is virgin or non-virgin, there are plenty of arguments in favor of eating coconut oil to improve your heart health.

Cholesterol

Coconut oil is considered a saturated fat. However, saturated fats in coconut oil do not negatively impact cholesterol in the body. In fact, the natural non-hydrogenated coconut oil is said to improve the good cholesterol, HDL (high density lipoprotein). HDL helps to protect the body against risk of heart disease. The Coconut Research Center claims that consuming coconut oil on a daily basis can decrease a person's chance of suffering a heart attack or stroke, due to the levels of HDL cholesterol.

Weight Loss

Healthy weight can equal a healthy heart. Coconut oil possesses many benefits for weight loss which in return benefits the heart. Coconut oil is extremely rich in medium and small fatty chains acids. These chains allow fatty acids to become easily metabolized contributing to healthy weight loss. Both virgin and coconut oil is easily digested. Coconut oil also keeps thyroid and enzymes systems functioning healthily while metabolism increases due to reduced pancreatic stress.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants are an important factor in overall health. Weight loss, a healthy heart and cancer prevention, are all benefits of adequate amounts of antioxidants in the body. Virgin coconut oil is rich in antioxidants.

Heart Disease

Coconut oil contains a compound known as MCFA. MCFA found in coconut oil has been used in studies that have shown its powerful effect on the arteries. When arteries become hardened with accumulated plaque, it puts one at risk of heart disease. According to the Coconut Oil Research Center, coconut oil helps to battle free radicals, toxins and viruses that promote artherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Without this conditions present, heart disease is less likely to become a threat. Because coconut oil is mainly a source of energy, it doesn't build up around the heart and arteries as other oils tend to do. The Organic Facts website explains that coconut oil is preferred by athletes for its ability to metabolize fatty acids.

Virgin Coconut oil vs. Coconut Oil

Processing of the coconut is what divides virgin coconut oil from coconut oil. Virgin coconut oil undergoes no artificial filtering. It's made fresh from the coconut, unlike coconut oil which is made from sun dried coconut. The texture of the oil is also different. Virgin coconut oil is thinner, allowing it to melt almost instantly with heat. Coconut oil is a bit thicker and calls for more intense heat to be melted. Scent and taste also differ between virgin coconut oil and coconut oil.

Warning

Before incorporating virgin, or any coconut oil into your diet, it is wise to discuss its medical benefits with a physician. Although there is a lot of information on coconut oil and its contributions to good health, many physicians and experts believe that the opposite may be true, or its effects may be neutral. The American Heart Association and other heart organizations do not offer much information regarding coconut oil and its relation to good health. More research is needed on this topic before a definitive link between coconut oil and good health can be drawn.

Neem Oil Vs. Vinegar

Neem Oil Vs. Vinegar

Neem oil and vinegar are both known for their medicinal properties. Both have been used for thousands of years. Although both come from natural resources, such as seeds, sugars and fruits, the techniques that transform the natural resources to the finished product are different. Once developed, neem oil and vinegar can be used to treat a wide variety of problems, from skin infections to bug infestations and warts.

Origin

Vinegar and neem oil have histories connected with agriculture. The French once referred to vinegar as sour wine. Vinegar was discovered when a barrel of wine had fermented past its time. The ancient Babylonians used vinegar as a food preservative and as a condiment, and they were among the first to add herbs and spices to the liquid. Vinegar has also been used as a household cleaner, as a sunburn remedy and as a vegetable wash. Neem oil originated in India. The specific tree, known as the azadirachta indica, produces neem oil and is indigenous to India. Neem oil has an important part of the Indian way of life for centuries, and the people of India have improved the extraction process throughout the centuries. In India, neem oil is used as a medicine to treat ailments such as skin allergies, malaria and diabetes.

Regulations

There are several types of vinegar, such as cider, malt and wine, manufactured throughout the world. The United State's Food and Drug Administration requires that vinegar have four grams of acetic acid per 100 milliliters, for the product to be labeled vinegar. The FDA does not regulate neem oil. The safety of the oil, pertaining to the use as a food or drug, is not controlled within the United States. Neem oil is supervised under the United State's Environmental Protection Agency and classified as a pesticide.

Process

Vinegar is usually produced from apples, grapes or sugar. Historically it has been made from a wide variety of foods -- anything that could be fermented, in fact. Making vinegar requires fermentation. The fermentation of fruit involves a chemical process that changes the fruit carbohydrates into alcohol. A second fermentation yields acetic acid, which is the key ingredient in vinegar. Neem oil is made by either pressing or extracting the neem seed kernel. Pressing the kernel involves squeezing or crushing the seed until the oil separates from the seed. Extracting the oil also concerns crushing the seed but then soaking the seed in a solvent such as Hexane. Hexane is relatively safe, but caution is required since the solvent is a component of gasoline.

Warning

Consult the advice of a naturopathic physician, a medically accredited doctor trained in natural therapy, before you use neem oil as a health remedy. Applying a large quantity of neem oil could cause kidney damage. Children should not ingest neem oil, as the oil can cause symptoms similar to Reye's syndrome and could lead to death.

Vitamin C Cancer Therapy

Vitamin C is often referred to as the "master antioxidant." Vitamin C works together with vitamin E, selenium and zinc to protect bodily tissues. Although vitamin C is not recognized by the FDA as a cancer treatment, it is widely used as a complementary therapy by some of the most successful alternative cancer physicians around the world.

How It Works

Vitamin C is required for more than 300 metabolic functions in the body, including the metabolism of several amino acid proteins and vitamins that are vital to the immune system. This vitamin plays a vital role in protecting cellular structures, including DNA, from damage. It also inhibits the formation of cancer-causing compounds. Some studies suggest that vitamin C may also stop cancer from spreading by neutralizing hyaluronidase, the enzyme that helps the cancer to metastasize, as reported in the book "How to Prevent and Treat Cancer with Natural Medicine" (2002).

Vitamin C for Cancer

Vitamin C first gained public recognition for the treatment of cancer in 1976 when two-time Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling published his study on vitamin C and cancer. In Pauling's study involving 1,100 terminally ill cancer patients, the group that received 10 grams of vitamin C per day had a 53 percent higher survival rate than the control group that received no vitamin C.

History

Several of history's most successful cancer practitioners included vitamin C as an important part of their therapies. German physician Max Gerson successfully treated many cancer patients with his therapy, which included vitamin C. His therapy is still in use today by some of the leading cancer clinics around the world. Other practitioners of vitamin C therapy have included Dr. Hans Nieper of Germany and Dr. William Kelley of the United States.

Intravenous Vitamin C

When administered intravenously, vitamin C reacts with copper in the blood, generating hydrogen peroxide, which destroys tumors through oxidative reactions. Naturopathic or metabolic doctors often administer this treatment for a reasonable price.

Recommended Intake

If intravenous vitamin C is not available, a natural powder or tablet form can be used. Vitamin C is water-soluble, so it remains in the body for only a few hours. Many of its enthusiasts say you should take vitamin C every few hours throughout the day. Start with 1,000 milligram doses and work up to 4,000 milligram doses. If possible, build up to 15 to 20 grams per day, taking it every two hours. Powder is a good form to use because it can be added to juices.

Warning

Vitamin C should not be considered a stand-alone therapy for cancer. It is not a cure. However, it can be very beneficial in fighting cancer. Always consult with your physician if you are taking medications or undergoing other cancer therapies.

Sinus pressure can make life unbearable and unfortunately, many over the counter remedies may cause drowsiness or other side effects that feel worse than the original sinus pressure. There are many alternative remedies for relieving the pain and pressure, including learning how to tap the nose to relieve sinus pressure. Tapping is a simple process that can be done anywhere and usually gives relief within 24 hours if done correctly.

Instructions

    1

Put two drops of eucalyptus oil and two drops of peppermint oil next to each other on a clean cloth handkerchief. Be careful not to get any on your fingertips.

    2

Hold the handkerchief up to your nose so you can smell the oils. Breathe in and out deeply for about one minute and then put the handkerchief aside.

    3

Using the index fingers of both hands, begin to tap lightly on the sides of your face below your cheekbones beginning at your hairline and following your cheekbone to where it meets the rise of your bone. Tap back and forth along the line of your cheek bone four or five times.

Alternatives to ADD Medication

Any parent with an overactive child probably knows a good deal about Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Sometimes the child seems to be going 10 different ways at the same time; other times he can't sit still for more than two minutes or focus his attention. Today, many doctors and schools have a simple answer: Drug the kid into submission. Many parents prefer something more natural, rather than sentence their child to a lifetime of drugs.

Check the Diet

Not eating right is a key factor in ADD. Unfortunately, with our modern high-speed, high-tech lifestyles, many families don't have time to prepare good, healthy meals. Instead, it's fast-food and lots of processed and pre-packaged meals. These meals can be full of chemicals, high in fat, sugar and carbohydrates. Children need vitamins, essential fatty acids and minerals to develop proper brain chemistry.

Check for Allergies

Food allergies can lead to many ADD symptoms, everything from hostile behavior to hyperactivity to sneezing, runny nose and stomach pains. There are two types of food allergies: those to general foods and those to food additives. The former is when the child is allergic to things like peanuts, eggs, wheat and milk. In the case of additives, these can be a food dye, preservative or chemical in processed food. So, if your child becomes symptomatic after eating, take note of what they've eaten, and then consult your physician about getting them tested for being allergic to something in their food. If they are, eliminating that food or ingredient can help eliminate the ADD.

Stay Active

Unfortunately, many schools have cut physical education and reduced normal recess due to budgetary consideration and concerns about liability. The result is children are far too inactive, and for ADD children, simple physical exertion can be key to helping them control their hyperactivity. So, enrolling your child in sports, such as karate, fencing, swimming and tennis, can do a world of good as alternatives to ADD medication. Simply going for a walk every day can help; it gives them a chance to burn off some of that nervous energy they've been storing up all day.

Also, classes like karate, judo and other forms of martial arts are not just physically demanding; they also embody a way of thinking, inner discipline and spiritual quality. These can help an ADD child to learn to control herself. Along these same lines, family counselling and therapy are good alternatives to ADD medication. Often, an ADD child can feel guilty about being disruptive around the house. Counseling, allowing the parents to reassure the child that everything is all right, can help as well.

Natural Cure for Sinus Blockage

Inhaled allergens, as well as cold weather often cause sinus blockage. Sinus blockage can be very uncomfortable. It can interfere with eating and sleeping. It can also lead to a sinus infection if untreated. But there are many ways to cure a blocked sinus the natural way.

Eucalyptus or Menthol Oil

Eucalyptus and menthol oil aid the decongestion of the sinus and the nasal passages. Both are also natural antiseptics and anesthetics. Eucalyptus and menthol, which is derived from peppermint plants, are often in nasal inhalers. These inhalers drain mucus from the nasal passages and relieve sinus blockage. Eucalyptus and menthol are also common ingredients in cold rubs, which can be applied to the skin.
Try putting a few drops of menthol oil into a bowl of boiling water. Three drops of oil should be enough. Bend over the bowl to inhale the oil-infused steam. Cover the area above your head with a towel or a cloth. Continue inhaling the steam slowly for 10 minutes. A few drops of the oil may also be applied to a handkerchief and sniffed throughout the day.

Clean Air

Clean air is a natural way to prevent and relieve a blocked sinus. Outdoor pollution and allergens often cause blockage. To avoid this, stay indoors as much as possible. If you must go outside, wear a mask to avoid inhaling polluted air.
When indoors, keep an air purifier running. It is also advisable to keep all surfaces inside the house dust-free. Change beddings regularly.

Humidity

A blocked sinus is usually experienced during the cold months of the year or early in the morning, when the air is still cold. During cold weather, a home's heating system is running, and all the doors and windows are closed. This makes the air very dry. Dry air causes a blocked sinus, which the cold outside aggravates.
To avoid having blocked sinuses during cold weather, the humidity of the air inside the house must be increased. Small, free-standing air humidifiers are sold in most appliance and hardware stores. You can also use a large-scale whole-house humidifier. If an air humidifier is not immediately available, sit in the bathroom with the hot shower running for about 20 minutes. The steam will increase humidity in the air and relieve the blockage.

What Are the Health Benefits of Omega-3 Fish Oil?

What Are the Health Benefits of Omega-3 Fish Oil?

Omega-3 fatty acids are long-chain polyunsaturated fats found in certain foods, such as fish. The two most beneficial omega-3s are DHA (docosahexaenoic) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic); both are found in fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel, lake trout and albacore tuna. Essential nutrients from fish oil help maintain a balanced production of hormone-like substances known as prostaglandins and offer many health benefits in the prevention of a wide range of diseases.

Battles Heart Disease

Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil benefit those who have cardiovascular disease or are at a high risk of the disease. Additionally, research indicates that omega-3 fatty acids reduce the risk of abnormal heartbeats, decrease triglyceride levels, slightly lower blood pressure and slow the growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque. For those with coronary artery disease and high trigylcerides, taking fish oil supplements provides more benefits than they would derive from the consumption of food, according to the American Heart Association website.

Potential Cancer Reducers

Studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil are commonly taken by cancer patients and may reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancers. This includes breast, prostate and colon cancer. Fish oil reduces the growth of cancer cells.

Pregnancy Benefits

Omega-3s are essential for the early visual and neurological development of a baby. An increased intake has been shown to prevent early labor and delivery, increase birth weight, lower the risk of pre-eclampsia and reduce the risk of allergies in infants. Additionally, omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial after childbirth to help produce breast milk.

Mood Stabilizer

Fish oil is beneficial as a mood stabilizer and provides relief from depression, anxiety, stress, sadness, mental fatigue and other nervous disorders. Positive results have also been shown in postpartum depression. Additionally, research indicates therapeutic benefits in childhood depression.

Additional Benefits

Scientific evidence indicates that the omega-3-fatty-acid benefits of fish oil are used to treat a variety of diseases, according to the MedlinePlus website. This includes improvement in kidney function along with protection from toxicity in organ transplant patients, pain relief in joint tenderness and morning stiffness related to rheumatoid arthritis, a reduction in angina pectoris, relief from painful menstruation and a reduction of inflammation in patients with ulcerative colitis.

Polyethylene Glycol Natural Alternatives

Polyethylene Glycol Natural Alternatives

Polyethylene glycol is the most frequently used polymer in biomedical applications. It has been used for the past 20 years in drugs that treat cancer, hepatitis, rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease. It is also used in industrial manufacturing and many toothpastes, creams, deodorants and lubricants. Abundant alarmist and contradictory information is published on this compound, mostly by individuals in the field of alternative health. Alarmist reports exaggerate research and inconclusively point to danger. However, a careful analysis of recent research and studies done on polyethylene glycol indicates little support for these reported dangers.

The biggest danger of consumption of polyethylene glycol compounds is hypersensitivity and possible accumulation within the body. This is best averted by being conscious of the amount of PEG compounds you take into your body. Read all labels and integrate natural options whenever possible, like holistic approaches. However; polyethylene glycol is often grouped into a category of cancer-causing chemicals, generating unneeded worry and concern. Sometimes, the most effective solution is a chemical compound that has possible side effects. If you experience hypersensitivity, are allergic to PEG or have experienced side effects, a variety of alternative remedies are available.

Laxative Natural Alternatives

Used as a laxative, polyethylene glycol 3350 is known as PEG 3350 or MiraLax. Many natural alternatives relieve constipation including increased water consumption, increased fiber consumption, aloe, rhubarb, probiotics, magnesium and acupressure. A variety of teas also have proven medicinal affects on constipation including dandelion, goldenseal and milk thistle.

Skin Cream and Lubricant Natural Alternatives

The ancient Indian health system of Ayurveda has long advocated the use of oils to moisturize the skin and for lubrication. The philosophy of Ayurveda is grounded in its holistic approach to health. To keep skin moisturized, Ayurvedic practices include consuming organic milk, water, whole grains, healthy fats, fruits and dark leafy vegetables to hydrate your body from within. A daily oil massage is recommended to keep skin supple. Ayurvedic health practices are based in three categories of psycho-physiological principles called doshas. Understanding what dosha type you are can help you develop a customized skin care regimen.

Natural Polymers

Natural polymers are alternatives to synthetic polymers like polyethylene glycol. Natural polymers do not accumulate in the body. They include poly-saccharides, which are polymeric carbohydrate structures that act effectively as carriers for other elements in the body. Natural polymers such as heparin, dextran, and chitosan are already used in a wide range of drug-delivery systems.

Cancer Treatment

Many cancer treatments include polyethylene glycol. Recent research shows that polyethylene-glycol (PEG) 8000, taken as a dietary supplement, can suppress and prevent colon cancer. PEG compounds are also used in drugs that have successfully reduced tumors in patients with lung cancer, kidney cancer, leukemia, ovarian cancer and breast cancer. There are no available alternative medicines for these drugs.

Natural Hormone Alternatives

Natural Hormone Alternatives

One night you awaken to find your sheets wet with perspiration. You start to yell for no apparent reason at your husband and children. You feel lethargic and just don't seem to have any drive or ambition. Although you suspect the reason, you go to your doctor and he confirms you are in "menopause." When experiencing menopause, you may want to consider natural hormone alternatives. Nutrition expert Ann Louise Gittleman, MS, CNS suggests that using natural hormone alternatives can be just as effective as Hormone Replacement Therapy but with fewer side effects.

Diet

    Apples contain mild plant estrogens.
    Apples contain mild plant estrogens.

Some foods contain mild plant estrogens that balance fluctuating levels of estrogen and testosterone. They include yams, thyme, sage, fennel, beets, carrots, cherries, pomegranates, apples, celery and nuts. Foods containing soybeans include tofu, tempeh, miso and soy milk. Studies reveal these foods relieve hot flashes, a major symptom of declining levels of estrogen. Eating oats can also keep hormones balanced. Kelp or other types of seaweed help balance levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, to control mood swings. According to Sarah Henry, award-winning health writer for the Center for Investigative Reporting, natural hormones don't act as quickly as drugs, so you will need to be patient. Results may not appear until four weeks or later.

Progesterone Creams

Vitamin E creams from marigold flowers contain progesterone-like compounds.

Epsom Salts for Detox

Epsom salts, from the mineral-rich waters of Epsom, England, are composed of sulphate, magnesium, hydrogen and oxygen. Epsom salts help detoxify and revitalize your body. Loss of magnesium can lead to joint and digestive system problems, as well as a decline in general well-being. Epsom salts used in baths aid magnesium absorption. Epsom salts are very inexpensive and can be found in grocery stores, drug stores and health food markets.

Detoxification Baths

Taking a hot bath with Epsom salts draws out the toxins stored in your body. Absorbed into the body, Epsom salts reduce swelling while relaxing stressed muscles. Here are some detoxification baths that will help your body and general well-being.
Use one to two cups Epsom salts with one cup baking soda to promote the evacuation of poisons in your body. Soaking for 20 minutes works best. Anything longer will make you too tired. You can also use skin brushing to help the toxins leave your skin.
To open your pores and eliminate toxins, use one cup Epsom salts, along with two tbsp. ginger. Mix these together before you add them to your bath. Sit in the bathtub for no more than 30 minutes.
If you need to counteract radiation, use one cup baking soda and one to two cups Epsom salts in a bath. You can enjoy this soak for about 20 minutes.
If you are feeling stressed, and your skin is quite dry, mix one cup Epsom salts, one cup sea salt and one cup sesame oil. Soak in the tub for no longer than 20 minutes.
If you have a minor wound, Epsom salt baths will act as an antiseptic and cleanse the area.
Using Epsom salt baths on a regular basis will also help rid your body of toxins in your digestive system. This will help you to absorb nutrients more efficiently. If you have multiple chemical sensitivities or Parkinson's disease you may have a problem with sulfate absorption. Soaking in Epsom salts two or three time per week will boost your supply of sulfate.
Using Epsom salts as a detox bath once per week not only helps clean your body, but also helps you sleep well. Going to bed immediately after the bath helps your body sweat out toxins.

Note of Caution

If you have blood-pressure dilemmas, diabetes or eczema, ask your doctor if using Epsom salts is recommended. If you also are someone who faints easily, adjust the water to a cooler temperature.
Taking an Epsom bath will make you sweat profusely; drink plenty of water or herbal tea after your soak.

Instructions

    1

Thoroughly sterilize your containers before bottling you rosewater facial toner. Any lingering bacteria in your bottles or jars can contaminate the toner, shortening its life. For glass containers, wash the jars or bottles thoroughly in hot water with soap, then boil the jars for 10 minutes in a large pot with a canning rack. Plastic containers cannot be boiled, as the high heat melts the material. After washing plastic bottles, dilute 1 teaspoon of unscented bleach in a quart of water, then fill the the bottles with the solution. Pour the solution out, then rinse the bottles with hot water. Sterilize lids in the same manner.

    2

Add liquid phenonip to your rosewater toner solution after the solution has cooled. The amount of phenonip varies depending on the amount of toner that you are making. The concentration of phenonip in your solution should not exceed .5 percent of the total solution. If you are making 1,000 milliliters of rosewater toner, do not add more than 5 milliliters to the toner. A small plastic beaker can help you properly measure phenonip; both are available from many chemistry and science supply stores.

    3

Store your homemade rosewater toner in an environment that inhibits the growth of bacteria. A refrigerator is the ideal place, as the cool temperature and darkness of the space keeps bacteria at bay. A dark cabinet or drawer is less than optimal, but it is better than storing the product in direct sunlight or heat. Avoid storing homemade rosewater toner in a bathroom medicine cabinet; the heat and steam of a bathroom environment accelerates the growth of bacteria.

Uses for Used Tea Bags

The next time you remove your tea bag from a steamy cup of herbal refreshment and throw it in the trash, think again. A used tea bag can reinvent itself as a natural healer for a variety of bodily ailments, a furniture cleaner and even a healthy treat for your garden. So use it before you lose it.

Healing the Body

One of the more commonly known uses for used tea bags is soothing puffy, tired eyes by placing the bags on them. Green tea is especially good for bodily ailments, as it contains a high dose of tannins, which are used to protect plants from predators. But for humans, tannins can act as a champion against insect bites, razor burns and sunburns due to their anti-inflammatory and antibacterial components. Tannins in tea can also help combat warts when reapplied a few days in a row.

Cleaning Furniture

Oddly enough, used tea bags can be used for cleaning your house or even getting rid of old furniture polish. Place a couple of old tea bags in a quart of boiled water, and let it cool. Then dip a rag or cloth into the tea water to remove dirt or ugly polish and varnish from wood furniture and floors.

Used tea bags can shine a mirror, too. Just dampen a soft cloth with warm water that contains used tea bags, and wipe the mirror to get streak-free results.

Gardening and Recycling

Recycle your tea bags by dropping the remnants of the tea into your soil in the backyard, which are healthy for your plants and allow them to grow. Mix leftover tea-bag contents with charcoal or ash, and use it in the soil of your potted and ground plants.

Used tea bags can also be helpful in helping speed up the decomposition process of your compost pile. Pour some warm hot tea on the pile to "draw acid-producing bacteria," according to "Reader's Digest."

Supplements for Lowering Cholesterol

Cholesterol-lowering drugs are an effective way to get dangerously high levels down to a normal range, but there are those people who would like to treat their symptoms in a more natural way. A number of herbal and nutritional supplements have been shown to help reduce levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol, and increase HDL, or good cholesterol.

Flaxseed Products

Ground flaxseed and flaxseed oil both carry a variety of health benefits, says the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). Taking a flaxseed supplement or adding the oil or ground seeds to your diet can reduce high cholesterol.

Soy Products

NCCAM researchers have found that a daily diet that includes soy products may lower LDL levels, an important part of lowering overall cholesterol. Oral supplements are sold at health food stores. You can also add soy milk or soybeans to your diet.

Green Tea

Green tea is an antioxidant that can protect you from cancer as well as lowering your cholesterol. Many people prefer to drink green tea instead of taking oral supplements, but both forms are available.

Garlic

Cook with garlic to reap the benefits of lower cholesterol, says the Mayo Clinic. If you do not like the taste of garlic, or it upsets your stomach, choose an oral supplement instead.

Grape Seed Extract

NCCAM suggests grape seed extract as a natural way to control cholesterol levels. This extract improves blood flow and can lower both cholesterol and blood pressure levels.

Warning

Discuss the possibilities of taking supplements with your doctor. Some nutritional and herbal supplements may interact with the drugs that you are already taking.

How to Eliminate Sinus Infections

Sinus infection symptoms are very similar to the symptoms of a cold or flu. Symptoms include sneezing, coughing, runny nose, congestion and sinus pressure. When you begin to feel pain in your top teeth and eventually feel a headache that won't go away, you know that you've developed a sinus infection rather than a cold or flu. Recurrent suffering from sinus infections and trips to the doctor can ultimately be avoided by daily nasal wash treatments performed at home.

Instructions

    1

Purchase a sinus kit, available at any drug store or some supermarkets. The kit should include a nasal irrigation bottle along with premixed packets containing sodium chloride and sodium bicarbonate.

    2

Blow your nose, clearing each nostril as much as possible with tissues. This will help to remove any mucus and make irrigation easier.

    3

Run tap water until it gets warm to the touch but not hot enough to burn your fingers. The inner lining of your nose is sensitive and you should take precautions not to burn it. The water should be warm enough to flush out any mucus or blockage.

    4

Fill the nasal irrigation bottle to the dotted line marked on the bottle. Tear open a premixed packet and pour the entire contents into the bottle. Screw on the cap and place your finger over the hole within the cap. Gently shake the bottle to mix evenly the powder with the water.

    5

Lean over your bathroom sink and place the black tip of the irrigation bottle directly in your right nostril. Do not shove it up your nostril but gently place the irrigation bottle nozzle completely up to it, blocking your nostril opening. Breathe out of your mouth only and gently squeeze the irrigation bottle to allow a uniform flow of water to go up your right nostril so that it will exit your left nostril.

    6

Squeeze the nasal irrigation bottle until the water reaches a half-way point in the bottle. Remove the nasal irrigation bottle from your right nostril and allow the water to drain from your nose. Don't blow your nose. Switch your left nostril and repeat the previous step. Don't swallow any water that goes into your mouth. Swallowing the solution in a large quantity can cause diarrhea.

    7

Gently blow your nose in a tissue, blocking one nostril with your finger while blowing. Rinse the nasal irrigation bottle clean. Repeat the sinus irrigation procedure twice a day indefinitely to eliminated sinus infections.

Vaporizers for Sinus Infections

Vaporizers for Sinus Infections

A vaporizer is a machine that converts water into vapor suitable for inhalation and benefits those suffering from sinusitis and the effects of dry air. There are three types of vaporizers: a cool-mist humidifier, a warm-mist vaporizer, and an ultrasonic humidifier.

Cool-Mist Humidifier

A cool-mist humidifier's rapidly spinning disk converts water into a cool mist. It is more prone to mold and bacteria, so regular cleaning is important. It disperses the minerals in tap water into the air, so distilled water is a safer choice. It also costs less than its warm-mist counterpart.

Warm-Mist Vaporizer

A warm-mist vaporizer's heating element steams the water, which could create safety hazards for children. The machine does not disperse minerals into the air, so tap water is a viable option.

Ultrasonic Humidifier

An ultrasonic humidifier creates movement in the water, which creates a fine mist. It is safe for use around children and doesn't spread bacteria and mold easily, but it needs to be cleaned regularly.

Cleaning a Vaporizer

The Mayo Clinic suggests using a 10 percent bleach solution---one part bleach plus nine parts water---daily to wipe a humidifier down.

Warning

Don't over-humidify the air. Too much humidity can encourage mold growth on walls and in carpet.

How to Make a Sitz Bath at Home

How to Make a Sitz Bath at Home

Perineal pain occurs from surgery, childbirth, hemorrhoids, infection and injury. This pain can be particularly difficult to manage due to pressure that is placed on the perineal area with sitting, and stress from urination and defecation. A sitz bath is an easy way to reduce pain and swelling in the perineal area. It can be used several times each day and requires little equipment. Purchase sitz baths at drug stores, or easily make your own at home.

Instructions

    1

Thoroughly clean and rinse the bathtub before you fill the sitz bath to reduce bacteria. Open wounds and surgical incisions are at risk for infection when exposed to bacteria.

    2

Fill the bathtub with 3 to 4 inches of very warm, but not hot, water. Add one-half cup of salt to the water.

    3

Lower yourself into the tub into a sitting position. Bend your knees toward your chest or prop your feet on the edge of the tub to take pressure off the sore area. Soak for 15 to 20 minutes. Pat the area dry with a clean towel. Repeat several times per day.

PMS Relief Through Self Hypnosis

PMS Relief Through Self Hypnosis

Premenstrual Syndrome or PMS includes pain, bloating, depression and mood swings, which presents a week or two before menstruation. No one knows exactly what causes these syndromes, especially when some women experience severe symptoms while others experience only slight discomfort. Some women do not experience symptoms at all.

Pain medications and diuretics help, but another alternative solution is catching on. These days, women who want to control PMS symptoms without resorting to medication can use self-hypnosis techniques.

PMS Control

    PMS

Hypnosis is deep relaxation induced by focusing on someone's voice or object, which induces relaxation like that experienced in sleep. In self-hypnosis, use of an audio or visual tape guides you into a relaxed state.

Guided induction allows you to experience hypnosis before you attempt self-hypnosis on your own; however, it is not necessary. Guided induction is a convenient tool to use when you are tired or too stressed to guide yourself, and some people prefer it because they find it easier.

An October 2001 article in the Western Journal of Medicine stated that randomized controlled studies have shown hypnosis and other relaxation techniques to help alleviate pain and reduces stress. This is not just new age stuff -- physicians and psychologists are using the mind-body connection and advising patients on relaxation techniques for stress and pain management.

Use of Imagery and Affirmation

    Imagine

Self-hypnosis, like meditation, induces relaxation of your body, reduces stress hormones and reduces pain by increasing endorphins, the brain chemical responsible for mood. Self-hypnosis uses visualization or imagery such as imagining yourself floating on a cloud or on some paradise island; any image you conjure up that helps you to focus on relaxation will work.

For PMS, you may induce an image of yourself on a warm and sandy beach. Imagine the waves rushing over you and with each wave that subsides, imagine the pain and stress of PMS washing away out to sea.

Using affirmations along with imagery helps to introduce new ideas about you through verbal statements. For example, you might say, 'I am a wonderful person,' or 'I handle stress well.'

Repeating affirmations will teach you to condition yourself and to learn different things about you until you begin to believe it. Affirmation helps reduce negative ideas or feelings you have. It is important however, to repeat affirmations that you do believe, at least on some level.

Self-Suggestion

    Free Woman

Self-suggestion is like affirmations in that in a relaxed state, you can repeat words that help to focus on relaxation, such as the words calm, or serenity. When preparing for hypnosis, you should think about suggestions related to what changes you want to make. Self-suggestion comes before the affirmations because self-suggestion is telling yourself what to feel about PMS and affirmations are about you and your self-image.

Self-suggestion helps deepen the relaxation state. You may want to make a tape of suggestions because you can play the tape without hypnosis whenever you want to remain alert, such as when you are in your car.

Definition of Bentonite Clay

Definition of Bentonite Clay

Bentonite clay is a fine-grained clay that contains primarily montmorillonite minerals. Bentonite is formed by the weathering of volcanic ash, usually in a marine environment. Many industries use bentonite clay in production, and individuals swear by the clay's internal and external healing properties. Bentonite clay comes in a broad range of colors, including light olive green, brick red, gray, cream, brown and yellow. Bentonite clay feels greasy, slippery or like plastic when wet, but its absorbent properties make it great to use as a paste. Read on to learn more about bentonite clay.

Name

Bentonite clay is the name given to a particular type of clay that was first noted near Fort Benton, Wyoming. This clay was originally called "taylorite" after William Taylor, the man who initially drew attention to the clay deposits back in 1888. Dr. Sam Knight, a state geologist for Wyoming, renamed the clay "bentonite" in 1898 after he discovered the term "taylorite" was being used in England as the name of another mineral. He chose the name "bentonite" because of the location where the clay is found.

Types

There are two basic kinds of bentonite, and their names depend on the primary elements found in the clays. Sodium bentonite swells when it gets wet, allowing it to absorb a very high volume of liquid. This property makes sodium bentonite an excellent sealant and waterproofing agent. Calcium bentonite, commercially called pascalite, naturally absorbs any oils, fats and oils found in a solution. This type of bentonite clay is the primary active ingredient of Fuller's Earth, which was one of the first industrial cleaners.

Location

The U. S. produces and exports the largest share of high-grade sodium bentonite. Most of the clay is found between the Big Horn Basin of Wyoming and the Black Hills of South Dakota. Over 70 percent of the sodium bentonite comes from Wyoming. Sodium bentonite clay is also found in Greece, China, Germany and Turkey. Sodium and calcium bentonite have been found in Russia, the Ukraine, Australia and India.

History

The Native Americans were the first documented users of bentonite clay. They utilized the natural cleaning and bleaching agents found in the substance. They also used bentonite clay to heal wounds and illnesses as well as to purify food and water. Bentonite was commonly used in spiritual ceremonies, and berries were often added to the clay for colorful face paint. As the pioneers moved west, they used the clay to treat inflamed horse hooves, grease wagon axles and waterproof roofs on buildings.

Industrial Uses

Bentonite clay is a common additive to ceramic pottery, cement and adhesives. This clay is also used as a base in cosmetics, a bleach for foods, a deodorizer in kitty litter and a lubricant in drilling. Bentonite is also utilized in making model rocket nozzles. Winemakers use bentonite clay to remove large amounts of protein from white wine so it looks clear. Nuclear scientists in Russia coat their bodies and hands with bentonite clay to protect themselves from radiation. Bentonite clay was even used to help clean Chernobyl after the nuclear reactor accident in the Ukraine.

External Uses

Bentonite clay is used in many commercial personal care products, including baby powder, eczema lotion, face creams, mud packs and sunburn lotions. Many individuals swear that soaking in a bath with bentonite clay added to the water will help remove toxins from the body. Acne sufferers might clear things up by applying a clay mask on the affected areas. Those with chronic headaches might find relief by placing a bentonite clay pack on the back of their necks for 20 minutes. Bentonite clay should never be allowed to dry on an open wound.

Internal Uses

French sailors of yesteryear used bentonite clay in their drinking water to help prevent dysentery. Bentonite is also known to help heal a variety of other gastrointestinal problems, including intestinal parasites, bacterial food poisoning and diarrhea. Some people drink clay in water or a little apple juice to help detoxify their liver and stimulate their immune systems. In theory, this clay will also fight any free radicals in the body, increase the amount of oxygen in the blood and increase T-cell counts. Only a small amount of bentonite clay needs to be consumed for it to have health benefits.

Does Oregano Oil Kill Various Germs?

The movement for finding natural remedies is increasing as fears of antibiotic resistance and unwanted side effects become increasingly more well-known. Originating in ancient Greece, oil of oregano is reputed to rival the efficacy of modern antibiotics with its germ-killing properties, without many of the side effects and risks associated with modern medicine.

The Facts

Mounting evidence points to oregano oil as a natural antibiotic, inhibiting the growth of germs like E. coli, salmonella, pseudomonas aeruginosa (a highly drug-resistant bacteria), klebsiella pneumonie (a type of pneumonia) and candida albicans (yeast). Some scientists maintain that oregano oil can also kill certain spores (like that of anthrax). It can be taken internally (either in liquid or capsule form) as an antibacterial/antibiotic or applied topically to a variety of skin conditions, to prevent wound infections and to promote oral health.

Research

In 2001, a Georgetown University researcher studied the effects of oregano oil against various bacteria, including those that are drug-resistant. Results of the studies indicated that the components of oregano oil inhibit infection with efficacy comparable to traditional antibiotics. The oregano oil inhibited the growth of germs like staphylococcus as effectively as streptomycin, vancomycin and penicillin.

A 2001 study at University of Tennessee's Department of Food Science produced evidence that oregano oil effectively killed germs like listeria, staph and E. coli.

In the February 2000 Journal, Applied Microbiology, British researchers suggested that oregano oil was effective as an antibacterial agent against more than 25 different bacteria.

Powerful Components

Some of the powerful components within oil of oregano include volatile oils (such as carvacrol and thymol), terpinines (like alpha/beta pinine and alpha terpinene), flavonoids (like naringin), tocopherols and derivatives of caffeic acid (rosmarinic acid, for instance). Carvacrol is an antimicrobial powerhouse that fights bacteria like E. coli and salmonella. It also has antifungal properties and may help to eliminate parasites. Thymol is also an antifungal and contains antiseptic properties. Terpinines have antibacterial properties (they are also found in tea tree oil). Rosmarinic acid is a potent antioxidant that helps to minimize cellular damage from free radicals and may be beneficial in treating allergic asthma. Naringin is an antioxidant (also found in grapefruit), as are tocopherols (also known as vitamin E).

One Product: Many Uses

The risk of germs developing antibiotic resistance to an all-natural substance is minimal, making oregano oil a promising new alternative to mainstream prescription medications. In addition to being a natural antibiotic with antiviral, antiparasitic, antibacterial and antifungal properties, oil of oregano can be used to treat a variety of maladies like allergies, bronchitis (use in a vaporizer) and yeast infections. It also may aid digestion, heal eczema and psoriasis, and regulate menstrual cycles

Apply it topically to treat acne, arthritis, athlete's foot, toenail fungus, dandruff and as a natural mosquito repellent.

Add a few drops to a bucket of warm or hot water for natural cleaning and disinfecting.

Considerations

Liquid oil of oregano should only be taken when diluted in a carrier oil (like olive oil). When the oregano oil is very concentrated, it may irritate mucous membranes and/or skin. Avoid getting the oil in your eyes, genitals or mucous membranes. A warm, tingly sensation is normal when taken by mouth. Pregnant or nursing mothers should consult a doctor before beginning this or any alternative treatment.

How to Test Colloidal Silver

How to Test Colloidal Silver

Colloidal silver is an alternative health product that is growing in popularity because of its alleged antibiotic properties, particularly as people are increasingly becoming resistant to pharmaceutical antibiotics. True colloidal silver is expensive to make and unfortunately unscrupulous manufacturers label other substances as the real thing. Usually these other products are either ionic silver or silver protein solutions which do not have the same properties as true colloidal silver (colloidal refers to particles, not ions) and silver protein products may even have a negative impact on health. It is possible to test these products to establish whether they are fraudulent or the real thing.

Instructions

    1

Add table salt to the solution to see if it is ionic silver. Table salt is sodium chloride and, if there are silver ions present in the solution, they will mix with the chloride ions in the salt and turn the solution white and cloudy. Unfortunately, if the product contains no silver at all, this test will not work. However, also remember that ionic silver is completely clear and colorless, whereas true colloidal silver is not. The colloidal particles in the real thing absorb light, giving the substance an apparent color, or will make the liquid look darker. It will not be completely colorless. This may also highlight a product containing no silver at all as a fake.

    2

Shake the product to see if it is a silver protein solution. If it is, it will form a layer of foam at the top which will remain there for several minutes. Also look at the color of the solution. The color will range from pale amber to nearly black if the product is silver protein.

    3

Check the color of your product to confirm your analysis, if you have eliminated the possibility of fakes using steps one and two. It should be neither fully colorless nor fully colored, but should instead have an "apparent" color. Because the small silver particles in it block light from passing through the liquid, it will appear darker than a clear substance. True colloidal silver will contain between 50 and 80 percent silver particles. The rest of the substance will be ionic silver. The real product has the most surface area of silver as the silver particles used in it are so small; this is a key characteristic of colloidal silver. If you have a laser pen and shine this through true colloidal silver, you will see the beam shining brightly through it as it reflects off the tiny particles of silver.

Homemade Ice and Heat Packs

Homemade Ice and Heat Packs

When you hurt, turn to a homemade heat or ice pack. Grain-filled heat and cold pillows provide gentle hot or cold relief for headaches, body aches, muscle cramps and sunburns. Filled with herbs such as lavender, this natural remedy soothes frazzled nerves and promotes relaxation. Homemade gel packs are handy to keep in your freezer in case of sprains, swelling or other injuries. You can make these pillows and gel packs with household items.

Instructions

Sewn Pillow

    1

Use a piece of newspaper to create a pattern. For a headache pillow, measure a rectangle that is 4-by-8 in., and, for a body pillow, measure 7 1/2-by-11-in. Cut out the rectangle.

    2

Place the newspaper pattern on top of the fabric. Using the rectangle twice, cut two pieces of fabric.

    3

Lay the fabric pieces, patterned side inside, on top of each other. With a fabric marker or sewing pins, mark a seam line 1/2-in. inside the rectangle.

    4

Sew along the seam line on all four sides, leaving a 3-in. gap in the middle of one side. Turn the fabric right side out.

    5

Pour rice or flax seed into the pillow using a funnel, filling it two-thirds full. Add 1 tsp. of herbs to the head pillow or 1 tbsp. to the body pillow.

    6

Fold the ends of the opening inside the pillow. Sew this area closed using a needle and thread.

    7

Store the pillow in freezer for a "gentle" cold pack. For hot pack, heat in the microwave for 1 or 2 minutes with a cup of water.

Instant Sock Pillow

    8

Fill a sock two-thirds full with long grain rice. Also add a small amount of a kitchen herbs, such as a rosemary sprig, whole cloves or cinnamon stick.

    9

Tie the open end of the sock into a knot.

    10

Place the sock in the microwave for 1 minute with a cup of water. For a cold pack, freeze for 20 minutes.

Gel Ice Packs

    11

Fill a freezer bag with 2 cups water. Add 1 cup rubbing alcohol or 1/3 cup vodka. You can substitute table salt for the alcohol, mixing the water with as much salt as will dissolve plus 2 tbsp. more.

    12

Add food coloring if desired. Seal the bag, pressing all of the air out of the bag. Shake gently.

    13

Freeze. The alcohol or salt in the bag will prevent the bag from freezing fully, which makes the gel pack pliable unlike a frozen block of water.

How to Naturally Treat Prickly Heat Rash (Miliaria Rubra)

Miliaria Rubra, also known as Prickly Heat Rash, is a skin disease that consists of itchy, small rashes on the skin. It's often times caused by humid and hot conditions, affecting people of any age. It's caused by the sweat glands becoming plugged with dead skin or bacteria. Below are some natural remedies that can be used to help treat Prickly Heat Rash.

Instructions

    1

Add more fresh, raw, fruits and vegetables to your diet. You should also increase your water intake to between 8 and 12 glasses of water per day.

    2

Increase your Vitamin E intake to around 500 mg per day.

    3

Brew a strong cup of Peppermint Tea then soak a cloth in the mixture and apply directly to the affected areas. If you prefer, you can also pour a strong brew directly into your bath.

    4

Soak thin slices of Cucumber in 1 cup of col water and 2 tablespoons of Fresh Lemon Juice for a minute. Apply the cucumber slices directly to the affected areas for 10-15 minutes then remove. Apply the treatment 2-3 times per day.

Naturist Treatment For Expectorant Asthma

Asthma is a chronic pulmonary disease that is caused by inflammation of the bronchial tubes, or airways. Asthma symptoms may subside after treatment with an expectorant, because expectorants help reduce the mucous that lines the air passages, causing the airways to widen and making it easier for the asthmatic to breathe. Naturist treatments with expectorants may reduce airway inflammation and help asthmatics live healthier lives.

Ginger, Roots

Some naturalists consider gingerroot to be the single greatest treatment for expectorant asthma. Ginger has been used for centuries to loosen mucous in the lungs and airways. A great way to enjoy the natural benefits of ginger is to boil it for several minutes and let it steep with a cup of hot tea, served with honey. If you do not like the taste of ginger, then you may try radish root instead and prepare it the same way (boiled, with tea).

Fruits, Seeds, Oils

Fruits and seeds serve as natural expectorants as well, especially fennel. Fennel seeds can help relieve chest mucous; herbalists often recommend that asthmatics use them as snacks. Chew a handful of fennel seeds throughout the day to help make coughs more productive and to open the bronchial passageways. Another snack for asthmatics that helps relieve mucous is dried grape seeds. If seeded grapes are soaked overnight in milk, you can remove the seeds the following day, and chew each one slowly. Oils such as mullein oil (found in herbal shops) can help decrease mucous as well.

Honey, Tea

Tea has been used for thousands of years as an expectorant and bronchodilator (natural treatment to open the airways). Honey is a natural decongestant, and the two perfectly complement each other and can be served simultaneously. Herbal tea has the most natural benefits and is recommended by most naturists for expectorant-related treatment of asthma. The suggested dosage of herbal tea infused with honey is to be served three times daily, or as needed when symptoms present themselves.

Bach Flower Therapy & Remedies

Bach Flower Therapy & Remedies

Bach flower essences is an alternative medicine. The Bach system of healing is therapeutic in that it incorporates flower essences with other dilutions to promote physical and emotional balance. Dr. Edward Bach founded Bach Flower Therapy as he saw the need arise in his patients. Bach believes the right combination of flowers will benefit the patient both physically and emotionally. Bach remedies are homeopathic; Bach essences contain 22% alcohol, listed as brandy in the ingredients.

12 Healers

The sun is a natural dehydrator.
The sun is a natural dehydrator.

12 Healers is a Bach essences product containing agrimony, centaury, cerato, chicory, clematis, impatiens, mimulus, rock rose, scleranthus, vervain and water violet. The sun method captures essences from flowers that bloom in late spring and throughout the summer. The sun is most powerful during these seasons. Harvesters capture the essences of the flowers onsite. Harvesters also cut the head of the blooming flower off the stem below the calyx. The flower head sits in a jar of water for three hours in full sunshine, then it's removed and the water filtered. Mother tincture is the name of the filtered water. Mixing brandy with the mother tincture in equal amounts creates the essences.

7 Helpers

Boiling water extras nutrients from flower heads.
Boiling water extras nutrients from flower heads.

The 7 Helpers include gorse, heather, oak, olive, rock water, vine and wild oat essences. The boiling method extracts the essences from these flowers. The boiling method is effective early in the year before too much sunshine takes over the day. At 9 a.m. harvesters go out selecting flowering sprays and leaves, placing them in a glass vessel. The mixture is 10 parts water to 1 part plant material. The water and plant rapidly boils for 30 minutes then workers let it stand to cool. After cooling, they let the water filter into glass decanters. The mother tincture created through the boiling method becomes a remedy after mixing with equal amounts of brandy, shaken and stored in a cool dry area.

2nd and 19

The 2nd and 19 remedy includes aspen, beech, cherry plum, chestnut bud, cab apple, elm, holly, honeysuckle, hornbeam, larch, mustard, pine, red chestnut, star of Bethlehem, sweet chestnut, walnut, white chestnut, wild rose and willow. People choosing Bach essences often do so intuitively. Vibrational remedies like the 2nd and 19 are combinational methods of healing focusing on both the physical and the emotional pains of the person. Intuition is an inner knowing of what you need physically and emotionally to regain balance in your life.

First Aid

First Aid is a healing essence including five flowers: cherry plum (fear of losing control), clematis (inattention), impatiens (impatience), rock rose (panic) and Star of Bethlehem (shock). The First Aid remedy reduces stress and anxiety of everyday life. The goal is to reduce tension and maintain mental balance. Both the Sun and Boiled Methods create the mother tincture for the First Aid remedy. The name can be confusing since it is not an immediate remedy, but a lifelong journey of healing and recovery.

Remedy for a Swollen Lip

Remedy for a Swollen Lip

A swollen lip can be the result of a physical altercation resulting in an injury to the lip. It can also be the result of an allergic reaction or even possibly a disease. In order to appropriately treat a swollen lip, it is necessary to know the underlying cause. A doctor should be consulted if the cause may be an allergy or disease or if the swelling continues after treatment.

Injury

Use warm water to treat your swollen lips. Pour hot water into a small cup or bowl. Add a little salt. Submerge your lips into the bowl for a few minutes. Only use if the swelling is accompanied by cuts to the lip.

Soak a clean towel in hot water and place on lips. Only use if the swelling is accompanied by cuts to the lip.

Rub some table salt gently across the swollen lip. Salt is a natural disinfectant and will kill germs present in the swollen lip. If you have any cuts, this may sting slightly.

Cold applications may also work. Place a few ice cubes into a clean towel and hold to lips. Freeze a spoon and then apply it to the swollen lip to reduce swelling.

Allergic Reaction

Consult with your doctor if you believe the swollen lip may be caused by an allergy. Signs of an allergic reaction may include itchiness and swollen red lips.

Avoid potential allergens. Take notes on recently eaten foods, new cosmetics or soaps or recent bug bites. You could also be allergic to bed linens or your pillow. Discuss with your doctor.

Try to not lick your lips as this could cause further damage.

Place a tea bag in a cup of warm water. Remove the tea bag. Cool and apply to swollen lip. Repeat until swelling is gone.

Soak a cotton ball in witch hazel. Apply to the lip.

How to End Self Hypnosis

How to End Self Hypnosis

Thousands of people use self hypnosis to alleviate stress, emotional or physical pain and to break bad habits. You can use self hypnosis as a way to promote a healthier lifestyle through relaxation and stress relief. The technique is useful in a myriad of ways, but how do you end it?

Instructions

    1

Enter into a hypnotic state using whatever means you find helpful. Some people listen to audio CDs, while others choose to pre-record a script with themselves as narrator. Those who are well versed in self hypnosis can enter a state of relaxation without any auditory assistance. Whichever method you use is fine, as long as you enter into a relaxing hypnotic state. Enjoy your relaxed state of mind until you're ready to end the session.

    2

Draw your hypnotherapy to a close by making a mental note that the session is ending. This mentally prepares your body for the change from the altered state back to a normal state of being.

    3

Envision a change of scenery that involves upward motion. For example, picture yourself rising into the sky slowly in the basket of a hot air balloon. Picture the sky and sun becoming crisp and clear while the ground fades away beneath your feet.

    4

Count yourself out of the session from 3 to 1 while picturing yourself rising in the balloon. Think to yourself, "On number 3 I'm relaxed and calm. It's time to finish this session." Allow the thought to sink in for a few seconds and then, "Number 2, it's time to come more alert. I'm feeling more wakeful now." Breathe deeply once or twice and then think, "I'm coming fully awake, refreshed and alive on 1." You are now out of your hypnotic state.

Folic Acid Overdose Side Effects

An overdose of folic acid is virtually unheard of, though there is always a risk with any supplement. Folic acid can be taken as a supplement or ingested through foods such as peas, beans, beets, oranges, liver and green leafy vegetables. There have been some reported side effects to taking folic acid pills, even when overdose is not suspected.

Warning

Taking folic acid supplements should be done under the care of a healthcare professional, especially when anemia or pregnancy are present, according to Drugs.com.

Recommended Dose

The body will not absorb more than 1,000 milligrams of folic acid per day, even if more is taken, according to the Nutritional Supplements Health Guide website. Most people should take about 400 to 600 milligrams per day.

Gastrointestinal Side Effects

In some people, especially those with allergies to other substances and foods, gastrointestinal side effects due to even a normal amount of folic acid can occur, according to Drugs.com. Nausea, decreased appetite, flatulence, and abdominal swelling can happen in any dose of folic acid, but it is rare.

Emotional Side Effects

There is a risk of insomnia or concentration problems in some people who take folic acid supplements, according to Drugs.com. Also, a bitter taste can occur which can cause both emotional and physical discomfort.

Allergic Reactions

Any food or drug can cause an allergic reaction at any time and folic acid is no exception, according to Nutritional Supplements Health Guide. Hives, swelling of the tongue, lips, face and breathing problems are symptoms of an allergic reaction to folic acid.

Scabies Relief

The term scabies is associated with an infestation of Sarcoptes scabei, a type of mite that generally cannot be seen by the naked eye. These eight legged mites actually burrow under the skin of the human they have infested and they cause an intense itching. Scabies can be caught from other individuals who are infected whom you have come into contact with such as children, friends, or sexual partners.

The Symptoms of Scabies

The symptoms of scabies generally cannot be ignored. When one is infected with scabies they will experience an intense itching, making itself more apparent at night. After the itching begins, small bumps will show up in between the fingers, around the waist, in the armpits, the buttocks, and the elbows.

Prescription Treatments for Relief

If you visit your doctor and you are diagnosed with scabies they will quickly put you on a topical insecticide such as permethrin, lindane, or malathion. These medications are used to rid the body of the mites. While effective, those with sensitive systems may experience dizziness and even seizure from the medication. Speak with your doctor about whether or not the benefits outweigh the risks associated with these medications. In conjunction with the pesticide the doctor will likely prescribe an antihistamine, which will help quiet the intense itching.

Natural Scabies Relief

If you are diagnosed with scabies you can get some relief by taking an antihistamine. These are available over the counter and come in both liquid and capsule form. You can also apply a baking soda paste to the itchy areas, which will help provide some relief from the itching and rash, but only temporarily.

To rid your body of the scabies you need to head to your local drug store and pick up neem oil. This is widely available and is a natural treatment choice for those who want to stay away from the prescription medications that many people are sensitive to. Simply apply the neem oil like you would a lotion. The oil usually needs to be applied twice, once a day for two days but can be repeated as often as is necessary. Neem soaps also seem to be a viable solution.

How Do Rife Machines Work?

How Do Rife Machines Work?

Identification

Proponents claim that Rife machines work through the generation of resonating frequencies that specifically affect disease-causing microorganisms at their frequency levels. This process could cause the cells of these microorganisms then lose their integrity, resulting in the destruction of these cells, and the release of their cellular waste and toxins into the bloodstream.

Transmission

Electrodes are placed on the body at the site of the disease, on the hands, or under the feet. Once the Rife machine is turned on, the frequency waves are said to travel through the body and to destroy all cells affected by that frequency. Normal body cells are said to remain unaffected by the frequency levels specific to the targeted microorganisms.

Function

In theory, light energy is converted into resonating wavelengths that supposedly enter the bacteria or virus cells, thereby causing them to become visible by that light. They are visualized at magnification between 8000 and 17,000 times magnification; the technology is then intensified to destroy these now-visible cells.

Effects

It is claimed that the microorganism cells would then undergo structural and physiologic changes that cause electrons to transfer away from their cells, causing further stress upon their cellular integrity. This then results in the death of that microorganism.

Cellular Debris and Removal

According to proponents, as these harmful cells supposedly die from the effect of the Rife machine, their cells break down, leaving behind its cellular debris, and the toxins from within these microorganisms are then be released into the blood stream. This is the main reason for therapeutic regulation of the treatment--to prevent toxic overload on the body's compromised immunity by spacing the treatments and allowing the body time to detoxify after each session.

Whole Body Approach

Rife machines are used in many parts of the world, where practitioners recommend the Rife therapy in conjunction with healthy diet changes, exercise, high fluid intake and whole-body cleansing. When applying the Rife therapy, practitioners aim to restore health and wellness to the whole body.

Controversy

While the Rife machine has gained worldwide recognition and use, its efficacy has not been officially evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States. The original design and therapy was not patented, and many believe that today's Rife machines are not comparable to the originals. Perhaps the Rife machine will be reviewed by the FDA, to analyze both its capabilities and limitations.

Home Remedy for Soothing Eye Reaction

Eyes reactions can stem from a variety of causes---from an infection (such as a sty or conjunctivitis) to simply having red, tired eyes. Allergies to plants, flowers, and grasses are also common culprits, causing reactions in the eye that lead to itching, redness, swelling, and watering. Regardless of the origin of an eye reaction, look to home and herbal remedies first for simple solutions and relief of bothersome irritation.

Infections

Treat infections of the eye, such as sties and conjunctivitis, by using warm compresses saturated in beneficial herbs or herbal supplements, such as eyebright, which is commonly used to treat eye conditions. Because it contains strong anti-inflammatory properties, this compound can help soothe infections of the eye. Apply a warm compress three or four times daily to aid in healing. Put a small handful of dried eyebright in one pint of water and boil for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat, and strain the herbs out. Cool enough to ensure you won't burn your skin. Saturate a small, clean, cotton cloth in the mixture, wring out, and place over the affected eye, keeping the eye closed. Leave on for about 5 to 10 minutes.

The herb echinacea is commonly used to fight infection in the body. Build up the body's internal defense system by taking a 325 mg capsule of echinacea three or four times a day to aid in healing of eye infections. Take as long as needed to eliminate the infection.

Garlic is a powerful infection fighter. Like echinacea, it also builds up the immune system. Eat one clove of garlic per day, or if you have a hard time adjusting to the taste of garlic, simply look for garlic supplements in your health food store and follow the dosing instructions.

Other Options

Redness or swelling can often result from lack of sleep. Make sure you're getting at least seven or eight hours of sleep a night. This alone will help your eyes to re-hydrate.

Use commercially prepared eye drops sparingly. Drops that are designed to remove redness from your eyes have an ingredient that constricts blood vessels. While they may work for awhile in alleviating redness and irritation, they often have a rebound effect, causing even more redness after the benefits wear off.

Soothe your eyes by placing a cool, wet washcloth over your closed eyes for a few minutes. Along with moisturizing your eyes, the coolness will help reduce swelling.

For a soothing, easy compress, simply place a teabag that has been saturated in hot water over your closed eye, making sure it's not too hot. For many conditions, the tannins contained in the tea provide soothing relief, along with infection-fighting properties. Repeat as often as you like.

How to Build Healthy Habits

How to Build Healthy Habits

If you're considering dropping some of your self-defeating habits for healthier ones, now is the time to do it. The planning stage of any endeavor is only meant to be the first step on a journey, but some people stay stuck in preparation mode and never get to the main event. Your first healthy habit should include making a commitment to yourself to acknowledge what you want to change about your life. Write it down in a journal, then take your first action step within 24 hours.

Instructions

    1

Start your day an hour earlier. That extra hour is the slot where you can fit in all those activities that you say you have no time for, such as meditating, exercise or reading. If one of the healthy habits you long to implement involves stressing less, then waking up early will give you that advantage. Instead of hitting the snooze button, rushing to shower, getting dressed and perhaps missing breakfast, get up early and ease into your day.

    2

Keep a food journal. Accountability is key for healthy habit keeping. Whether you want to lose weight or gain it, or whether you're concerned about your dietary choices or can't remember what you eat from day to day, keeping a journal for a minimum of six months will become a habit you won't want to break. According to "Science Daily," a study done by Kaiser Permanente's Center for Health Research found that people who kept track of what they ate were more likely to lose weight.

    3

Stop gossiping. Practice what yogis call ahimsa, or non-violence, towards others and yourself. Judging others is a drag on your soul; worse, it keeps you from working on your own self-development. Walking away from negativity becomes a healthy habit that will lift your spirits and contribute to the development of a less stressful life.

    4

Spend less. Without a monetary management system, your spending can grow out of control. Create a budget to help you discern the best routes for your money to take. According to the University of Illinois Extension's website "Getting Through Tough Financial Times," making a list of your most critical expenses is key to managing your income. Concentrate on your needs first, then work out a strategy for fulfilling your wants.

How Does Body Detoxification Work?

Introduction

Detoxification is the internal cleaning of the body. It is a way to remove toxins, poisons, chemicals, and other harmful materials. Detoxifying the body promotes self-healing and offers overall good health. However, detoxification is also a way to remove addictive substances from the body like cigarettes, alcohol, recreational drugs, and prescription drugs. Many practitioners of alternative medicine suggest that regular detoxification be made a part of a person's lifestyle. Fortunately, there are several methods of detoxification so a person is certain to find methods that suit her needs and lifestyle.

Methods of Body Detoxification

For those who want to rid the body of toxins and accumulated build-up, detoxification is usually done at home and can last from a few days to a few weeks. It can also become a part of daily life. The many methods of detoxification include fasting, losing weight, colon hydrotherapy, special diets, and herbal and vitamin remedies. Not many people know that exercising and deep breathing are also ways to detoxify the body. Many experts in alternative medicine feel that cleaning out the liver, the kidneys and the colon is a good way to rid the body of impurities.

Fasting, Weight Loss and Exercising

With fasting, no food is eaten for a few days. This allows the body to rest and save energy. Usually digestion requires a lot of energy, but with no food to digest, the body has energy for self-healing. During fasts, only liquids are taken. Water is often the only liquid used, but herbal teas and fruit juices are also used to supply some nutrients during the fast.

Fasting also leads to weight loss. Going on a diet is another way to detoxify the body because toxins are stored in the fatty tissues of the body. When weight is lost, these impurities are released into the body. It is important to make detoxification a part of a weight loss program. While eating organic food does not in itself detoxify the body, it does reduce the amount of chemicals a person gets from eating food.

Aerobic exercise not only helps a person to lose weight, but it also detoxifies the body. Raising the heart rate increases the circulation of blood and lymph fluids. The blood brings nutrients to the body, and the lymph fluids remove waste. Sweating while exercising also releases impurities through the pores. Deep breathing offers a measure of detoxification. As a person inhales, oxygen is taken in; on the exhale, carbon dioxide is released from the body.

The Colon, the Liver and the Kidneys

Cleaning the colon takes many forms. There are many colon cleansers on the market that use herbs to clean the intestines of fecal materials and other accumulated wastes. Colon hydrotherapy also cleans the colon by inserting a device into the rectum that uses warm water to flush out all of the debris. Colon hydrotherapy should only be done by trained professionals.

By cleaning the colon, the intestines have less chance to reabsorb toxins from the feces. The kidneys filter the blood. The removed toxins are released to the bladder and eliminated through urination.

Uva ursi is a popular herb that cleans the kidneys so they function better. The liver carries out many important functions of the body, including detoxification. The liver removes harmful substances that are by-products of body processes. It also removes toxins digested by the body from food and water. The liver detoxifies by metabolizing and secreting these materials. An effective liver cleaner is milk thistle, a well-known herb.
