How to Use Tourmaline Stones

How to Use Tourmaline Stones

Tourmaline is a hard mineral that grows inside rocks found around the world in places such as Sri Lanka, Africa and Brazil. Tourmaline naturally forms in several different colors such as black, green, red, blue and pink and it is often partially transparent. Tourmaline has been used as far back as ancient Egyptian times, when it was called "gemstone of the rainbow" due to the wide variety of available colors. Tourmaline is believed to have mental, spiritual and physical healing qualities. Purchase tourmaline online or through local gem dealers as well as jewelers.

Instructions

    1

Wear black tourmaline jewelry around your neck, wrists or ankles or directly on any areas of the body experiencing an ailment to correct the energy of your cells.

    2

Use brown tourmaline, also known as champagne and dravite, to calm and soothe yourself. It is also believed that brown tourmaline provides psychic protection.

    3

Meditate while holding blue tourmaline to induce psychic awareness and emotional purification. Blue tourmaline is associated with higher self-awareness and intuition.

    4

Stimulate the unity of your heart and body by keeping rubellite -- dark pink or red tourmaline -- with you. The dark pink tourmaline is high in lithium, which brings feelings of love and balance into your life.

    5

Balance your metabolism and increase your immune system by wearing "watermelon" tourmaline that has pink, red and green color qualities.

    6

Carry green tourmaline or wear it as jewelry to attract creativity, compassion and abundance in your life. For healers, this gem is thought to be particularly helpful when used in conjunction with healing herbs.

    7

Increase your intelligence with yellow tourmaline, known as golden or tsilaisite. The bright yellow color is a product of the traces of manganese found in it.

Mint for Colon Pain

There are several causes of colon pain, or what is sometimes referred to as "spastic colon," none of which should be ignored. It is an incurable condition that afflicts up to 20 percent of the world's population and is the most common chronic health condition known. It is said that the use of mint (menthol) is a good way to clear up the symptoms of abdominal cramping, also known as irritable bowel syndrome (or IBS).

About Mint

Mint is an aromatic square-stemmed annual bush that grows and produces serrated leaves. There are hundreds of varieties, all of which have a fresh, crisp taste and minty odor. Dried mint, found in Egyptian pyramids as early as 1000 B.C.E., was known to be good for stomach ailments, and the early American Shoshone natives used it to treat gas.

Symptoms of Colon Pain

Colon pain is a continuous or recurrent lower abdominal cramp that ranges for mild to unbearable. It is usually associated with altered bowel movement (such as diarrhea, constipation, bloating, or gas). Pain can occur at any time, even at night while you are asleep. It isn't commonly accompanied by nausea or vomiting, but this can happen. Some women get colon pain with monthly menstruation.

Possible Colonic Diseases

Most spastic colon issues are not directly connected to upper GI (gastrointestinal) problems, and neither is blood in the stool, fever, swelling or joint pain. These are symptoms that are indicative of a more serious underlying disorder. The best thing to do is to get tested, in any case. If it turns out that your spastic colon issue is not related to a serious illness, there are several remedies available that can help ease symptoms and pain.

Remedies

There are many remedies available for colon pain, or spastic colon, including a change in dietary habits, holistic therapies like yoga and acupuncture, mind-over-matter therapies like hypnosis or hypnotherapy, prescription medications and herbal or probiotic supplements.

Warnings

There are specific things to remember about mint in conjunction with use as a remedy for colon pain. First, mint must always be diluted. Even when diluted, it can irritate mucous membranes and reduce milk flow in lactating mothers, and should not be taken if you have gallstones, a hiatal hernia or heartburn caused by acid indigestion or reflux. It also should not be given to children for more than one week--and in highly diluted dosages, of course.

    3

Apply gauze or cotton to hold the alum paste in place. After the alum soaks in, the cotton or gauze can be removed.

    4

Reapply the alum daily until the skin hardens and retracts from the nail. If the skin becomes more irritated, apply the alum less frequently.

How to Mix a Bentonite Clay Poultice

Bentonite clay is often an ingredient in cosmetic facial masks. It is purported to draw out toxins, according to HappyHerbalist.com (see reference 2). You can even eat this clay to cleanse the colon. Bentonite clay may also help ease inflammation, infection and accelerate wound healing. Make a poultice of the clay and apply it to bee stings, cuts, bug bites and infected wounds.

Instructions

    1

Measure about 1 cup of bentonite clay and place it in a bowl.

    2

Measure about 1 cup of water and add it to the clay.

    3

Mix the clay thoroughly. Add more water as needed. The clay should have the consistency of a gel. According to Eytons' Earth, you have added enough water when the clay can just hold its shape without completely falling apart (see reference 1). The clay should be smooth, with no lumps.

    4

Apply the clay to the area you wish to treat. Eytons' Earth recommends applying it to a thickness of 1/4 inch to 3/4 inch (see reference 1).

    5

Wrap a bandage around the area gently. The bandage should be loose enough so that it does not put pressure on the area.

    6

Leave the clay on the skin for 20 minutes to an hour. If you have applied the poultice to a wound that is draining, remove the clay, clean the wound and reapply another poultice. You may need to do this several times until the wound stops draining.

    7

Remove the poultice by taking off the bandage. Rinse off the clay in warm water. You may notice a temporary redness on your skin. According to HappyHerbalist.com, this disappears in about 30 minutes (see reference 2).

Free Medical Advice on Boils

A skin boil is an infection of a hair follicle. The medical term of a boil is furunculosis. When the hair follicle becomes infected, it fills with pus and is very painful. Personal hygiene does not cause boils but all sufferers of boils carry the staph virus on their skin. It is important to control the staph virus and good hygiene does play a role in reducing the frequency of boils.

Transmission Areas

The nose, armpits and inside of the legs are the most common areas for boils. It is possible to transfer the bacteria to other sites by the fingernails, fingers and nose. Itching or touching a rash transmits the staph virus to the hair follicle, which is considered a weak area of the skin. The staph settles into the follicle, causing a boil. The normal course for a boil is 10 days.

Tips for Care

Drain the pus from a boil at its earliest sign. Place a warm compress over the boil. This brings the pus to the surface of the skin. Gently pierce the skin either by pressing the sides of the boil together or with a sterilized needle. Sterilize a needle by placing it in rubbing alcohol for one minute before use. Clean the area with soap and water once the pus has drained. Place a gauze bandage and antibiotic cream over the boil, allowing the boil to continue draining. Make sure the boil is covered, as the pus is contagious.

Shower daily. Do not take tub baths as the staph virus can spread in the water. Use an antiseptic soap to remove the virus from the skin.

Do not share towels, bed linens, and clothing or make up with others to prevent the spread of the virus.

Change night clothing and underwear daily.

Wash hands frequently along with a hand sanitizer.

In the event of an outbreak, rub the entire body with rubbing alcohol daily for one week to prevent the spread of staph.

Considerations

It may be necessary to visit your physician if the boil does not go away after 10 days. Special antibiotics and testing may be required. Additionally, the physician may ask you to change your diet and take certain vitamins.

Diabetes, an immune or iron deficiency or anemia may have greater instances of boils; therefore, following a physician's advice is important in controlling boils. An infection that is uncontrollable with these types of health issues can cause more problems.

How to Bathe the Eye

The eyes are sensitive organs in the body which can get overworked or infected. Throughout time, eye washing and bathing has been practiced to soothe dry and irritated eyes, as well as to remove foreign objects that accidentally got stuck inside the eyelids. There are three ways to bathe the eye.

Instructions

Wash Bowl

    1

Fill an ordinary wash bowl with water, about three-fourths full. Do not fill the water to the brim to avoid spilling. Ordinary cold water can be used to wash the debris out of the eye, but in some instances such as mild eye irritation, lukewarm water mixed with a teaspoon of salt or boric acid may be used to provide instant relief.

    2

Remove eyeglasses or contact lenses if you are wearing them

    3

Hold your breath and immerse your face in the water. Slowly open your eyes to allow contact of eyeballs with the water or the solution. Blink your eyelids and roll your eyeballs to let go of any harmful particles that entered the eye. Do this for at least 10 seconds. Repeat until your eye discomfort is relieved.

Eye Cup

    4

Fill an eye cup with water or a weak solution of salt or boric acid. You can also buy commercial eye wash solution which you can fill in the cup. An eye cup is a small cup with a contoured rim that fits the socket of the eye, used for application of liquid medicine or wash to the eye. This method is ideally used when a person has conjunctivitis. It allows washing one eye one at a time, discouraging the spread of infection to the other eye.

    5

Remove eyeglasses or contact lenses if you are wearing them.

    6

Lean your head forward and place the cup over one eye. Press the cup firmly against the eye socket so the liquid won't leak.

    7

Tilt your head backward to let the solution soak your eye.

    8

Open and blink your eye, then roll your eyeball to allow the eye wash to cleanse it.

    9

Discard the liquid, wash the eye cup and put a new solution into it. Repeat steps 3 to 5 to bathe the other eye.

Commercial Eye Wash and Bath Kit

    10

Pour the eye wash into the eye bath about one-third full.

    11

Remove eyeglasses or contact lenses if you are wearing them.

    12

Bend your head forward while holding the eye bath by its base. Place the eye bath over the eye and raise your head. Open your eye to allow the eye wash to bateh your eyeball. Turn your head left and right for at least 30 seconds. Rinse eye bath thoroughly after use.

    13

Repeat step 4 to wash the other eye.

Soothanol X2 Instructions

Soothanol X2 Instructions

Effective topical pain killers are something muscle and joint pain sufferers have long been desperate to find. Many don't like to take medicine internally for this kind of pain and people in constant agony, with arthritis for example, would often prefer to apply pain relief only to the affected areas. Soothanol X2 would seem to be the answer to their problem. The problem with most topical pain killers is the inability of the ingredients to penetrate deep enough to attack the pain. The DMSO, or dimethyl sulfoxide, in Soothanol X2, which is an organic substance from the woody part of trees, helps deliver the ingredients to the target area.

Instructions

    1

Use Soothanol X2 on adults and children over 2 years of age. According to the manufacturer's directions, Soothanol X2 is safe for use on these age groups, but consultation of a physician is advised for children younger than 2.

    2

Apply between two and five drops of Soothanol X2 to the affected area, spreading it gently over the skin. Wash your hands before and after applying Soothanol X2.

    3

Repeat the procedure up to three or four times daily.

Natural Alternatives to HRT

Natural Alternatives to HRT

Women searching for relief from menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, insomnia and vaginal dryness may turn to a number of natural remedies. As concern grows about possible side effects of prescription hormone replacement, the medical community is sponsoring more studies to investigate the efficacy of these remedies.

Dong Quai (Angelica sinencis)

Sometimes called "the female tonic," dong quai contains iron and vitamin E and helps in hormone balance. Scientists aren't sure if Dong Quai mimics estrogen or blocks estrogen, and few studies have been done. However, it does provide relief of hot flashes for some women.

Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa)

    Black cohosh

In one study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology in May 2001, 80 percent of the 629 study participants who took black cohosh extract experienced relief from their menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes and headaches. In another study, 80 patients who took black cohosh extract tablets twice a day experienced greater relief from menopausal symptoms than patients who were given estrogen or a placebo.

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

Licorice (photo by Byant Olsen http://www.flickr.com/photos/22837563@N08/2670259748)

Licorice stimulates the adrenal gland and produces cortisone-like elements that mimic adrenal hormones. It has a positive effect on both estrogen and progesterone levels. Women who have high blood pressure or who are taking digitalis should not take licorice.

Chasteberry (Vitex agnus-castus)

    chasteberry (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/73/Vitex_agnus-castus_A.jpg)

Chasteberry contains estrogen and progesterone-like compounds. Though first used to repress the sex drive in women of child-bearing age, it doesn't appear to have any effect on libido during menopause. Though several studies have shown the chasteberry is effective in treating PMS, no studies have looked at its success in treating menopausal symptoms.

Wild Yam (Dioscorea villosa)

Wild Yam (photo by Marco Schmidt http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MS_1960.JPG)

Wild yam contains a form of natural progesterone. Wild yam extract creams have been touted as useful for relieving vaginal dryness and hot flashes. A 2001 study by the Baker Medical Research Institute in Australia showed no discernable difference in wild yam cream and a placebo in relieving hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms.

Uses for Honey & Lemon Juice

Uses for Honey & Lemon Juice

Honey and lemon have long been valued for their curative properties. Lemons are the fruit produced by lemon trees. Their highly acidic juice provides substantial health benefits and is used for the treatment of various ailments. Honey is revered by ancient tribal communities as a rare, sweet delicacy that doubles as a highly effective medicinal agent. When combined, honey and lemon juice become a powerful concoction that restores good health and purifies the body.

Skin Care

Honey is antimicrobial and antibiotic. Raw, unfiltered honey is applied as part of a skin care regimen to treat acne in place of manufactured, topical drugs. Honey actively kills bacteria and wards off skin infection. A natural humectant, honey promotes moisture retention and restores skin's elasticity and suppleness. Honey is especially useful for curing chapped lips when incorporated into a lip balm. Lemon can be paired with honey to fight acne with its astringent properties. The acid in lemon juice acts as a natural toner and promotes blemish reduction. Apply lemon juice to the face as a preventative measure to fight acne and to even skin tone. Lemon juice provides substantial sun protection and makes an excellent lip treatment when paired with glycerin.

Illness

Phytonutrients within honey are capable of fighting cancer and malignant tumors. Caffeic acid methyl caffeate, phenylethyl caffeate and phenylethyl dimethylcaffeate are phytonutrients that prevent colon cancer by shutting down cancer-causing enzymes, according to The World's Healthiest Foods website. Raw, unprocessed honey reduces cold and flu symptoms more effectively than over-the-counter cold products, such as dextromethorphan. A surplus of friendly bacteria within raw honey contributes to the alleviation of sore throat and respiratory conditions that accompany the common cold. Honey prevents diabetes and is more tolerable by diabetics than sucrose sugar. Improved blood vessel function and oxidation results when honey is substituted for cane sugar. Lemon juice calms digestive ailments and tempers fever symptoms associated with the flu and the cold. Sore throat and tonsillitis can be calmed by drinking a lemon juice and hot water mixture. When combined, honey and lemon juice becomes a highly effective cold and flu remedy.

Weight Loss

Honey improves blood sugar maintenance and lowers cholesterol, resulting in improved metabolic functioning that leads to weight reduction. Honey improves the process by which glucose is converted to glycogen to be stored in the liver and muscle cells. Were this process not carried out properly, stress-hormone production would contribute to substantial weight gain. Honey keeps the body's metabolic processes running optimally. Lemon speeds metabolism and promotes functionality of the digestive system. A highly-functioning digestive system assists the body in absorbing nutrients that burn fat. A honey-lemon drink ingested once daily works to promote weight loss.

Forms of DHEA

Dehydroepiandrosterone -- better known as DHEA -- is a steroid hormone that has drawn much interest in recent years. Proponents of DHEA believe it can slow or reverse the effects of aging, lift the immune system and improve a person's physical condition and mental state. DHEA is available in several forms, natural and synthetic.

Natural in the Body

DHEA is a naturally occurring hormone found in the human body, where it originates in the adrenal glands. When functioning properly, the body produces 15mg to 30mg DHEA daily, with a small percentage used by the body. As people age, levels of DHEA produced can lessen, leading people to seek ways to supplement the body's production.

Synthesized sublingual

One commonly synthesized DHEA form is known as sublingual, which comes in tablet form in doses that usually are 5mg. Sublingual tablets offer the full spectrum of DHEA's benefits.

7-keto DHEA

Another synthetic from of DHA is known as 7-keto, taken in doses of 25mg to 50mg daily. 7-keto DHEA is targeted toward improving the body's immune system. It's more often recommended for women, particularly those going into menopause. Another reason for women to use 7-keto DHEA is that it doesn't produce the testosterone of sublingual DHEA, which can produce unwanted side effects such as facial hair and acne.

Food Sources

The best source of DHEA in a diet is by eating beef, pork, chicken an other animal meats. Some people claim that wild yams are a good source of DHEA, but there's no scientific evidence that they provide any beneficial levels.

How to Make Homemade Nasal Irrigation Saline

Cleaning out the sinuses with salt water is an old remedy to alleviate congestion. A saline solution is poured or sprayed into the nostril and then flows through the sinuses, cleaning out bacteria and allergens. The ingredients to make homemade nasal irrigation saline are readily available in your pantry. This solution can be used with any nasal irrigation system: a bulb, a neti pot or any other refillable sinus irrigation container.

Instructions

    1

Combine salt, baking soda and water in a bowl.

    2

Carefully pour the ingredients into the sinus rinse apparatus. Skip this step if you're using a bulb.

    3

If you're using a bulb, squeeze it to let the air out. Dip the tip into the bowl and release the bulb to pull the saline solution into the bulb. Repeat this as often as needed during irrigation. Continue to step 5 to use your bulb to irrigate your sinuses. If using a neti pot or refillable sinus irrigation container, skip this step and move on to step. All three apparatuses use the same method for irrigation.

    4

Pour the saline solution into the neti pot or fill the sinus rinse.

    5

Tilt your head to the left at a 45-degree angle over a sink. Your left nostril will drain into the sink.

    6

Pour the saline solution (or squeeze) from your apparatus into your right nostril until the solution flows through your sinuses and exits through your left nostril into the sink.

    7

Turn your head to the right and repeat step 6, putting the saline into your left nostril and letting the used solution flow out of your right nostril.

    8

Blow your nose to get rid of any solution still in your sinuses. Repeat steps 1 through 8 once or twice a day to clean allergens and debris.

They are most commonly used to assist with bladder and bowel control issues, reduce the pain of menstrual cramps, improve sexual enjoyment and ease childbirth. These exercises actually strengthen the pelvis floor muscles which are a critical component to supporting the function of the important organs in this region. The exercises are easy to do and can be completed anywhere at anytime.

Instructions

    1

Isolate the appropriate muscle by standing up straight and place you hand on the front of your lower abdomen.

    2

Contract your pelvic floor muscles, while in this position. The sensation is similar to when you need to pee but are holding it. This is the correct sensation. Your pelvis should not move, as this exercise is focusing on the internal muscles.

    3

Strengthen this muscle by tightening, hold for a count of three, then releasing. Repeat this 10 times.

    4

Recheck your technique--be sure that you are not holding your breath or clenching your abdominal muscle.

    5

Repeat this exercise 10 to 15 times a day. Each day, increase the length of the hold by a count of two. These exercises can be done while standing in line, on the bus, in the car, or anywhere else. They are invisible to others, but provide a great benefit to you.

    6

Follow this regime and within 2 weeks you will see a noticeable difference in the length of time that you are able to hold the muscle and an increase in bladder control.

    7

Expect to have gained a noticeable increase in bladder control, after approximately 4 weeks of this program. An added bonus of these exercises is an increase in sexual enjoyment for women. Expectant mothers generally experience easier delivery and reduction in tearing during natural childbirth.

    8

Try Pilates if you would like to continue to work on this area, but would like to see some outward improvements, such as a reduction in the size of your lower abdomen. Kegel exercises are a critical part of Pilates and thanks to your efforts, you will be able to take full advantage of the benefits of that exercise program.

How to Cure Nausea Without Using Medication

There are many natural ways to cure nausea without using medications. Sour flavors especially are said to ease nausea, especially in seasickness and morning sickness. Most of these remedies can be found at your local grocery store and don't require elaborate prep to use. Feel better!

Instructions

    1

Eat something sour or tart. The fastest, simplest way to ease nausea upset is with something very sour or tart. Sucking on a lemon wedge may ease your nausea. Other sour remedies to try: sour candies, sour pickles and lemonade.

    2

Drink ginger in either tea or soda form. Ginger is one of the most ancient cures for an upset stomach. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, part of the National Institutes of Health, ginger extract can be found in digestive and antinausea dietary supplements in the U.S.

If you try ginger ale, drink it flat -- the carbonation in fresh ginger ale soda will only further upset your stomach. Or make ginger tea from thinly sliced raw ginger steeped in hot water for about 10 to 15 minutes. Ginger tea may also help re-hydrate you: the Mayo Clinic recommends staying hydrated to ease nausea.

    3

Suck on a mint candy or make some mint tea, either with a pre-made mint tea bag or by stewing three to four crushed mint leaves in hot water for 10 to 15 minutes. Mint is also an all-natural nausea remedy, and, according to the NCCAM, mint oil is not only an all-natural cure for nausea, but can help ease other stomach ailments, such as irritable bowel syndrome.

    4

Eat bland foods. Plain grain cereal such as oat O-shaped cereal, dry white toast and saltine crackers all absorb stomach acid, while also keeping you from starving and therefore aggravating your already upset stomach.

    5

Try acupressure wrist bands. These are sold under a variety of brand names and can be found at almost any drug store.

    6

Taking extra vitamin B-6 may help. Ask your doctor how much to take. According to the Babycenter.com, taking too much Vitamin B if you are pregnant may cause nerve damage in you and may harm your baby.

How to Treat Raynaud's Syndrome through Diet

Raynaud's Syndrome has no simple cures, and one of the easiest ways to treat Raynaud's Syndrome and its symptoms is to make diet changes. Raynaud's Syndrome is a disease where the small arteries that bring blood to the fingers and toes spasm, usually due to either being exposed to cold, or stress triggers.

Instructions

    1

Avoid drinking caffeine, both are vasoconstrictive and can further complicate Raynaud's Syndrome. Don't just pass on the coffee, avoid caffeinated sodas and chocolate as well.

    2

Avoid alcohol, which is a stimulant and can also further complicate Raynaud's Syndrome. It has the same type of affect on Raynaud's Syndrome that caffeine does.

    3

Add more garlic and onion to your diet. Garlic and onion both are known for aiding with circulatory problems. Try to add more of both to your diet. Try using them in seasonings and marinades or even salad dressings. You can even get extra garlic into your diet by taking it in a supplemental form if you don't like the taste.

Homeopathic Ways to Cure Kidney Stones

Kidney stones or renal calculi, are hard masses that form in the kidney or urinary tract. They can vary greatly in size, but are always painful. Some large kidney stones must be removed by surgery. Consult with a physician to ensure surgery is not required before beginning any homeopathic treatment. There are several remedies that address both the symptoms and causes of kidney stones. Herbal medicines, hot packs and changes in diet can relieve pain and reduce the formation of the stones.

Herbal Medicines

Homeopathic remedies are used to treat symptoms of kidney stones for pain relief. The specific treatment will be determined by the symptoms. Berberis vulgaris is used for sharp pains that radiate from the groin area and for treatment of kidney stones on the right side. This medicine is also known to eliminate stones and prevent new ones from forming. Cantharis is used to treat urine that burns. Colocynthis treats pain over the whole abdomen, felt when urinating. Ocimum canum is used when pain is accompanied by nausea or vomiting. Pennyroyal is used to treat left-sided stones or frequent urination.

Hot Packs

Hot packs can be applied to the back or abdomen to relieve pain. The heat will relax muscles and allow for easier passage of the stone. Castor oil can relieve cramps and spasms because it has an anti-inflammatory property. Hot vinegar packs can relieve severe pain. Place a pack of one part water to one part vinegar solution over affected area.

Diet

Changes in diet can reduce or eliminate the recurrence of kidney stones. Most stones are made up of calcium and uric acid. Recent studies have shown that a diet high in calcium can help reduce the formation of kidney stones in patients. If acidic urine is present, avoid fish and poultry. Patients who develop calcium oxalate stones may need to limit their intake of chocolate, tea, coffee, cola, nuts, spinach and strawberries. Consult with a nutritionist to determine the best diet for youl. Increase fluid intake to help prevent stones.

Tips

Many homeopathic remedies are given in the form of a pellet with a lactose base. Liquid forms are available and may be a better choice if you are lactose intolerant.

How to Make Alkaline Water

How to Make Alkaline Water

Alkaline water is created in order to neutralize the acidity that is found in more acidic diets. Alkaline water contains no acids or bases. According to many natural health specialists and alternative nutritionists, the belief is that acidity damages organs and inhibits mental processes. In order to counter this, these alternative health specialists recommend alkaline diets consisting of vegetables, fruits, seeds and nuts. However, alkalinity can also be achieved by treating water.

Instructions

    1

Find a source of water that contains calcium and magnesium. These minerals are essential in order to exploit the electricity found in these minerals. Alternative health specialists believe that this process will separate acid from the water source.

    2

Pour water into a water ionizer. This is a container that sends electricity through the water.

    3

Run the water through a reverse osmosis water filter. This is a powerful filter that removes acidic contaminants from the water.

    4

Add a pH boosting supplement to the water.

    5

Add baking soda to the water in order to reduce acidity.

How to Use Coconut Oil to Combat Bacterial and Viral Illness

One of nature's most potent resources for combating illness is something that should make each and every one of us who like fat in our diets very happy. Medical professionals agree that about 30 percent of our diet should consist of fats and oils. It is the types of fats and oils we take in that cause the problems, not the fats and oils themselves. Coconut oil--specifically organic, extra virgin coconut oil, is one of the best naturally occurring oils that we can use in our daily diet. In fact, coconut oil is considered, by holistic and natural health practitioners to be functional food.

How does that translate to helping fight of illness? Some saturated fat is necessary for our bodies to function at peak performance. Not all saturated fats are equal. Coconut oil is one of the best for our bodies. Not only is it easily digested, it also increases our metabolism, and it contains a fatty acid called lauric acid. Lauric acid metabolizes into monglyceride. Monoglyceride has strong anti-pathenogenic properties. When the amount of naturally produced monoglyceride in your body increases, your body is more able to fight infection. It creates a unfriendly chemical environment in your body that makes bad bacteria, viruses and fungi less able to reproduce. Read more to learn about the benefits of this oil.

Instructions

    1

Find a resource for organic, extra-virgin coconut oil that will allow you to purchase your supply at a reasonable price, as coconut oil can be quite expensive. You can usually find food-grade coconut oils at your local natural or whole foods store or co-op for prices that range between $5 and $8 per pound.

    2

Replace the fats that you would normally use in cooking, such as for frying eggs or stir-frying vegetables, or even replace butter on your popcorn with coconut oil, making sure that you have an intake of 2 to 4 tbsp. of coconut oil per day.

    3

It will take several weeks for the lauric acid and monoglyceride levels to become elevated and reduce pathogens abilities to reproduce. This is a lifestyle change that will have to continue to be practiced in order for it to remain effective.

Home Remedies for Killing Crab Lice

Home Remedies for Killing Crab Lice

Crabs are also known as pubic lice, which affect the genital region of the body. Crabs are very similar to head lice and are treated in the same manner. However, if you do not want to use remedies that contain chemicals there are many treatments that are all-natural and can be made in your home to kill and remove crabs.

Shampoos

Products such as Rid and Nix can help treat crab lice. However, if you do not want to use products that contain chemicals, you can make your own using natural ingredients. Make a solution containing 1/3 cup almond oil, two tsp. lavender oil, and two tsp. of bergamot oil and two tsp. of eucalyptus oil. Apply it before bed and keep it covered all night. Rinse it out the next morning and use a lice comb to remove any lice and eggs. These ingredients can be found in health food stores and bath and body shops.

Astringents

Mix together 1/4 cup of vinegar and 1/4 cup of water. Then mix one tablespoon of salt, honey and sugar and add it to the water and vinegar mixture. The mixture will only work if it is thick and granulated so add additional quantities of the ingredients if necessary to thicken. Use a cotton ball to apply the mixture and hold the cotton ball to the affected area for thirty minutes. After you remove the cotton ball, scrub the area with it. Then add margosa leaves to 500 ml of water and then add it to a bath. Margosa is a dense evergreen tree. Margosa leaves can be found in health food stores.

Wash Everything

Crab lice can linger up to two days in your clothing and bedding. Wash all linens and clothing in hot and soapy water. Dry on high heat for at least twenty minutes. For items that cannot not be machine washed, take the garments to a dry cleaner and seal them in a plastic bag for two weeks. Washing all items that you may have been in contact with will also help in preventing any other family members from coming in contact with the parasites.

How Herbal Vaporizers Work

How Herbal Vaporizers Work

An herbal vaporizer is a device used to extract the active ingredients of herbs for the purpose of inhalation. Vaporizers are not yet FDA approved, so use at your own risk.

How It Works

Smoking heats a substance to a very high temperature, which burns the material and causes it to be converted into smoke. The smoke is inhaled to obtain the benefits of the substance. However, smoking has dangerous side effects including the production of carcinogenic byproducts. Vaporizers use advanced technology to heat the material to the temperature most effective for gently releasing the pure flavor and active elements. There is no burning or smoke, only pure vapor.

Benefits

Vaporization results in direct delivery to the bloodstream, thus has a more rapid onset of the pharmacological effect. Vapor contains little tar, no carcinogens and feels much cooler to inhale than smoke. The vapor contains no smoke so the natural tastes and flavors stay intact and no odors are present.

Types

There are three types of herbal vaporizer elements: glass, ceramic and aluminum. The most widely used vaporizers utilize ceramic elements. The advantage of this type is that it stays cleaner than the others and is therefore healthier.

Chinese Herbal Remedies for Eczema

Chinese Herbal Remedies for Eczema

Western medicine is beginning to acknowledge and accept traditional Chinese methods including the use of herbs and acupuncture in the treatment of medical conditions. Scientific studies have shown Chinese herbs to be effective in the treatment of eczema in both children and adults. Dr. Julia Wisniewski of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and her colleagues studied children who had eczema. The children were treated at the Ming Qi Natural Health Center in Manhattan between August 2006 and May 2008. Dr. Julia Wisniewski found the use of Chinese herbs to be a safe alternative to Western medicine in the treatment of eczema in children.

Herbal Teas

Teas made from Chinese herbs are also commonly used to treat eczema. The combination of herbs varies and depends upon the severity of the eczema and the suspected cause of the eczema. Some of these herbs used for herbal teas include include fang feng, tian men dong, gan cao, shi gao, yi yi ren, ku shen, sheng di huang, zhi mu and mu dan pi. The Chinese herbs chuan xiong and huang qin can also treat scalp eczema. Long dan cao may be added to herbal teas to treat ear and facial eczema. Drinking Erka Shizheng herbal tea twice a day helps treat severe eczema in children.

Herbal Capsules

Chinese herbal teas are not always agreeable to Western tastes. Chinese formularies now come in capsule form. Rather than boiling the herbs into a tea, herbs are dried and placed into capsules. Capsules are easier to give to children and to persons unable or unwilling to drink herbal teas due to a disagreeable flavor or odor. Capsules may also be broken open and sprinkled on food or poured into drinks.

According to a study by researchers at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, preliminary studies have shown five raw Chinese herbs to be effective in treating eczema. The study appeared in the British Journal of Dermatology. The five herbs found include flos lonicerae, Japanese honeysuckle; cortex moutan, or root bark of peony tree; herba menthae, or peppermint; cortex phellodendri, or amur cork-tree bark; and atractylodes rhizome.

Cold Compresses

Applying a cold compress decoction of several Chinese herbs makes an effective treatment for mild to moderate cases of eczema. Cold compresses are placed directly onto the affected areas. The Chinese herbal cold compresses relieve itching and swelling associated with eczema. Chinese herbs prepared and used as a cold compress include ku shen, bai xian pi, cang zhu, gan cao and huang bai.

Herbal Topical Preparations

Lotions, creams and ointments made of Chinese herbal formulas have been used to treat or eliminate eczema. By applying these topical treatments directly onto the affected areas, swelling and itching decreases.

Consult with a Professional

As with all alternative and herbal medical treatments, patients should consult with a medical professional or with a licensed herbalist or traditional Chinese medical practitioner before starting a regime. Some herbs may be effective in treating eczema but, in the wrong dosage, may cause other ailments or have undesired side effects. Even if the dosage is correct, using the wrong herb may not benefit the patient, and in fact, may be dangerous.

Foods That Heal Adrenal Glands

The adrenal glands are located near the top of the kidneys. They maintain the body's overall functions. They produce sex hormones and cortisol (which is produced when a person is under stress). When the adrenal glands don't function properly, they can cause illness and fatigue. With the proper diet, certain foods can heal the adrenal glands and help them function correctly.

Organic Green Leafy Vegetables

Organic, leafy green vegetables are rich in vitamins and antioxidants. By adding more leafy vegetables such as spinach or red leaf lettuce, people can help balance their adrenal glands.

Super Foods

Super foods such as brewer's yeast, wheat germ and fresh sprouts can help heal poorly functioning adrenal glands. You can add these items to salads, juices or smoothies.

Deep-Ocean Fish

When you eat deep-ocean fish such as Atlantic cod three times a week, you will notice a difference in adrenal gland function. Omega-3s found in fish provide natural antioxidants to the adrenal glands.

Whole Grains and Rice

Whole grains such as wheat bread and brown rice are recommended. Whole grains are complex carbohydrates, which add energy to the adrenal glands and help fight fatigue.

Warning

Only a medical doctor can diagnose adrenal gland issues. These foods can help with less severe symptoms, but people with severe conditions (such as hemochromatosis) sometimes need prescription medication.

Oriental Massage Technique

Oriental massage has become popular in the West over the past few decades, and that popularity does not look as if it will abate anytime soon. The richness of tradition and the relaxing qualities make these massages irresistible. Add to the equation the promotion of spiritual calm and healing, and it is no wonder an overworked West enjoys the wonders of the Eastern massage. Several varieties of massage, from several Eastern countries, are available, but some are more popular than the rest.

Tui Na

Tui Na is a Chinese medicinal massage technique that translates to the English words "push pull." Tu Na uses hand massage paired with stretching to promote blood circulation and communication between the brain and muscles. Acupoints, also called pressure points, are used to balance the inner spirit, Qi, and the blood throughout the body. Joint pain, back issues and other skeletal issues are said to be cured by the Tui Na technique. Tui Na is recommended every three to six weeks depending on the severity of your need. No oil is used.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu massage is another form of therapy, this time from Japan. Shiatsu means "finger pressure," and since the fingers are used to apply pressure on specific points throughout the body, Shiatsu is also considered an acupressure practice. Like Tui Na, Shiatsu is concerned with balance in the body, promoting Qi or chi to heal health issues. Qi is believed to be the power behind life. Shiatsu is performed during a one- or two-hour period, where specific areas are worked over in a traditional order that promotes blood flow and chi. During a Shiatsu massage, you are asked to lie face down while your practitioner works on problem areas. Stretching is often involved during a long massage. Do not seek out Shiatsu if you are pregnant, have heart disease or are prone to blood clots. No oil is used.

Ayurvedic Massage

The tradition of Aruyvedic massage comes from the Aruyvedic medicinal traditions. Aruyvedic massage has been practiced since the first century B.C. and was practiced by the common public, as well as specialists in clinics. Sesame seed oil is mixed with other oils, depending on the sex of the massage recipient. Some oils are used for specific ailments, such as chamomile for muscle pains.

How to Improve Children's Motor Skills with Yoga Exercises

As children grow, they become more physically aware of their body. They are also learning how to use their body but sometimes their balance can be shaky. This simple yoga exercise known as Tree Pose will help improve children's balance, focus and clarity. Tree Pose also strengthens the legs and helps improve posture. This yoga exercise can be practiced on a daily basis and children will gradually begin to notice a difference in their balance and focus.

Instructions

    1

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, its active component, berberine, has been studied thoroughly and shows benefit for many conditions. They are unsure if goldenseal supplements can exhibit the same effect when used internally and if it is as effective as berberine alone. Its topical applications have shown to be effective. The herb itself has not been studied extensively, and its use is largely based on traditional medicinal practices.

Flute and woodwind music is popular, especially Native American, Far Eastern or Himalayan flute recordings, perhaps because of their soothing wind-like tones. Instrumental massage music often includes unusual musical instruments that have a religious or spiritual significance such as a harp, chimes, Buddhist tingsha cymbals or Tibetan prayer bowls. Playing music associated with a faith tradition may increase the relaxation effects for people who appreciate that tradition. Orchestral music can also be used for massage music if it is light.

Vocal

Most vocal massage music does not have lyrics. Trying to understand the words of a song may distract the recipient of a massage from full relaxation. However, therapists will often choose music that has repetitive, melodious vocals such as a Gregorian chant. Other types of vocals in massage music include the singing of simple words or syllables as an accompaniment to the music. Prayer-like affirmations such as "deep peace comes to you" or "may you relax and release" are sometimes woven within the melodies of music made for massage.

Purpose of Massage Music

A massage therapist may choose to play music because she enjoys listening to it or because it helps her stay focused on her work, but the most important reason most therapists opt for ambient music during massage is because they know it helps the massage recipient relax and enjoy a more complete experience. A study published by the Journal of Advanced Nursing confirms that listening to relaxing music "reduces heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure" and, to some degree, can even reduce pain. Soothing music is also credited with easing headaches, boosting immunity and lifting mild depression -- all of which are also benefits of regular massage therapy.

How to Use Flaxseed Oil to Treat PMS

How to Use Flaxseed Oil to Treat PMS

Flaxseed products--oil pressed from the seed and the seed itself--contain a compound called phytoestrogen. This is a plant-based estrogen that is a weaker form of the hormone our bodies produce. Some women have found that taking flaxseed oil can help treat symptoms of PMS, including mood swings and breast pain. Flax may also be an effective, natural way to treat uncomfortable hot flashes that occur in menopausal women.

Instructions

    1

Use flaxseed oil on a short-term basis when you feel PMS symptoms beginning. Be aware that you may feel some minor side effects, such as nausea, diarrhea and fatigue if you are not used to taking flaxseed oil. If the side effects become uncomfortable, contact your doctor.

    2

Slice some kiwi fruit into a bowl of lowfat yogurt. Mix in 1 tbsp. of flaxseed oil. Kiwi is a good source of vitamin E, which can help relieve PMS symptoms in addition to the phytoestrogens found in flaxseed oil.

    3

Toss your salad with a flaxseed oil and lemon vinaigrette. Use fresh spinach and top with raw almonds, foods that are rich in vitamin E. In addition to easing PMS symptoms, this type of healthy meal can help lower your cholesterol and decrease your risk of heart attack.

    4

Avoid using flaxseed oil in cooking or baking, as it cannot withstand heat. You can use ground flaxseed in multigrain bread recipes if you prefer that method to using the oil. Flaxseed is lower in fat than the oil and may be better for those who are watching their caloric intake.

    5

Increase the amount of fiber in your diet by adding ground flaxseed to your foods. The additional fiber will keep your digestive system running smoothly and may help alleviate premenstrual bloating.

    6

Exercise 2 to 3 times a week for 30 minutes each time. Women who exercise regularly tend to have fewer health complaints throughout the month.

How to Naturally Enhance the Female Libido

How to Naturally Enhance the Female Libido

Many factors can be detrimental to a woman's libido, or sex drive. Stress, physical and mental health, children, premenstrual syndrome, birth control, alcoholism and drug abuse can all have negative effects on the female libido. Naturally enhancing a woman's sex drive will help improve health, confidence and overall life satisfaction. Numerous medical studies have concluded that a healthy sex life relives stress, improves physical health, decreases the risk of mental disease and improves relationships.

Instructions

    1

Identify the root cause of what is lagging your libido. This is more difficult for women than men because it involves a range of possible problems, from physical to emotional. A study by the International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health "found that the majority of women who were experiencing low sexual desire was a result of their emotional distress rather than a physical trauma," according to Better Health Research. Evaluate stressors, illnesses and other factors that may lead to a decreased libido. But other factors, like relationship issues, can also have a negative effect on a your sex drive.

    2

Visit your doctor to discuss the problem. Low sex drive has been linked to thyroid problems, anemia, depression and other medical problems. A consultation with your family doctor or a therapist can help detect these problems.

    3

Improve your diet. Many medical problems like anemia can be addressed by eating a well-balanced diet that includes iron-rich foods important for providing oxygen to cells. An improved diet will improve fatigue and your cardiovascular and immune systems.

    4

Begin a regular exercise regimen. Many issues with the female libido are related to confidence and self-image. Improving your health and overall appearance will increase your confidence, mental health and overall image, thus increasing your sex drive.

    5

Take naturally occurring herbs to help increase libido. Gingko, arginine, ginseng and tribulus terrestris have been known to have stimulating effects on a woman's sex drive.

    6

Address problems with your current relationship. One of the biggest killers of the female libido is an inattentive partner because for woman the emotional aspects of sex are just as important as the physical. Seeing a counselor can help by giving each partner an environment to freely discuss issues with the relationship. If issues cannot be rectified it may be time to part ways.

    7

Set a romantic mood. Food, lighting and music have been found to enhance arousal. This will allow you to momentarily free yourself from the stress of daily life and allow you to concentrate on your own well-being.

How Does Candex Work?

Fighting Candida

Overgrowth of candida albicans, commonly referred to as "yeast infection," can take the form of thrush, vaginal yeast, skin disorders, or irritable bowel syndrome. Candida overgrowth is common for people who have recently taken antibiotics, but it can also become a chronic problem for some individuals.

Conventional treatment of candida overgrowth involves the use of antifungal medication, which may cause unwanted side effects, including temporary intensification of symptoms as the yeast colonies die off. More recently, probiotics such as acidophilus have been used to combat yeast with "good" bacteria. Candex works in a completely different manner than either of these methods.

Why Candex is Different

Candex does not use any herbs, bacteria colonies, or antifungal compounds to fight yeast overgrowth. Instead, this fascinating supplement utilizes enzymes to directly break down the cell walls of the yeast organisms. Enzymes digest, rather than kill, yeast, so the yeast organisms do not decay or cause further problems.

When cellulase and hemicellulase, two natural enzymes found in Candex, are added to the body, they digest candida, effectively eliminating it. The cell walls of yeast colonies are made almost entirely of fiber, so the body can easily eliminate and digest them with the simple addition of fiber-digesting enzymes. The result is considered to be both safe and effective.

Side Effects and Interactions

Because cellulase and hemicellulase are both naturally occuring enzymes, the body is already equipped to handle Candex. Some people experience mild stomach upset from the addition of these powerful enzymes to their gut, but the effects are generally short-lived and mild.

Fortunately, Candex does not harm the natural floral balance of the body by eliminating probiotics, and it may actually have the positive effect of enabling the body to more efficiently digest fiber. Many naturopathic physicians believe that it is a safer alternative to conventional antifungal treatments.

Cure for an Ingrown Hair

Cure for an Ingrown Hair

Ingrown hair is often caused by shaving, waxing and tweezing. It occurs when the shaft of hair re-grows sideways and back into the skin instead of up and outwards. It often causes itching, localized inflammation and even infection. An effective cure for ingrown hair works by freeing the trapped, ingrown hair and its harmful effects.

Release

Release the ingrown hair by gently rubbing a warm washcloth in a direction opposite to that in which it is growing.

Pluck

Pluck the ingrown hair out with nail or eyebrow tweezers. Be sure to pull the hair from its root, leaving no hair beneath the skin surface.

Mask

Apply a mask to the area (See Resources below). Press a small piece of muslin or gauze into the mask. Let it dry for 20 to 30 minutes. Swiftly strip the gauze away in a direction opposite to that in which it is growing.

Disinfect

Dab some mild antiseptic--such as hydrogen peroxide or aloe vera gel--onto the ingrown hair to disinfect the area and treat the infection. Repeat as needed until healed.

Prevention/Solution

The most effective means for prevention is to stop shaving or shave less often. When this is not a practical option, then always shave in the direction of hair growth. Avoid using repeat razor strokes. Wear loose fitting clothes.

Warning

If there is no improvement after 5 to 7 days--or if the ingrown hair begins to ooze pus--it is time to consult a dermatologist.

How to Make a Salt Inhaler

How to Make a Salt Inhaler

The use of a salt inhaler for treatment of respiratory ailments is a drug-free alternative health therapy. It is believed that the periodic inhalation of salt-infused air calms and flushes the entire respiratory system, and can ease asthma, allergies and the flu. Alternative health practitioners also recommend that salt inhalation be used as a preventative measure during cold season.

Instructions

    1

Open a paper clip to form a straight piece of wire. Use pliers to hold one end of the wire over an open candle flame or an electric stove burner, until the end is orange with heat.

    2

Use the hot paper clip to melt holes into the bottom of the plastic bottle. Press the heated paper clip to a point along the edge of the bottle, and apply light pressure until the wire melts through to the interior. Repeat every 1/8 inch along each edge of the bottle, reheating the paper clip as necessary.

    3

Reheat the paper clip and melt 12 holes into center of the bottle lid.

    4

Fill the bottle with 1/3 cup of coarse sea salt. Wrap a small amount of electrical tape around the sides of the lid to form a tight seal.

    5

Use the inhaler by placing your mouth over the center of the lid and breathing in deeply. Remove your mouth from the bottle and hold your breath for 5 seconds, then exhale as forcefully as you can. Repeat this process for 10 inhalations.

Alternative Cures for Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus is caused by dermophytes, a fungus that implants itself under the nail bed. This results in a thick, crusty, discolored nail that can cause pain and swelling in the toe. Several natural treatments, best used in conjunction, are available but can take awhile to work; the same is true for conventional treatments. It can take several months to one year for a new, healthy nail to grow in. You should consult with a health care professional experienced in alternative medicine. The University of Maryland Medical Center and alternative medicine expert Dr. Andrew Weil offer several suggestions.

Natural Supplements to Fight Fungus

Certain natural treatments, used both topically and orally, can fight fungus directly or strengthen the immune system.
Dr. Weil recommends applying tea tree oil or grapefruit seed extract to the nail twice a day for at least two months.
Immune-enhancing supplements include probiotics (take chosen supplement as directed on the product label), L-glutamine (500 to 1,000 mg daily) and reishi mushroom (300 mg three times a day. Certain supplements have antifungal activity including grapefruit seed extract (100 mg three times a day), green tea (500 mg a day) and cat's claw (20 mg three times a day).

Alternative Treatment Modalities

Certain alternative treatment modalities might be useful for eradicating toenail fungus. They include acupuncture to strengthen immunity and massage and hydrotherapy, both of which stimulate circulation and encourage the transport of blood, nutrients and immune cells to the infected nail. This can stimulate healing. You can perform hydrotherapy by switching between hot and cold foot baths. Make one bucket with hot water (about 100 degrees) and one with cold; place your foot in the hot bucket for three minutes and then switch to cold for one; do this three times and thoroughly dry your feet afterwards. Adding seven drops of lavender oil to the hot water can enhance its stimulating action. Do not try hydrotherapy without talking to your doctor first if you have diabetes, impaired circulation or peripheral neuropathy.

Enhancing Immunity with Diet

Eating a diet that promotes a strong immune system is a good complement to your alternative treatment modalities. Eat one or two cloves of raw garlic daily--it is a strong antifungal agent. Inflammation weakens immunity; limit your intake of inflammation-causing foods like meat, eggs, dairy, white flour foods, sugar and trans fats, which are found in many commercially baked goods, margarine and fried foods. Increase your intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, legumes, healthy fats found in cold-water fish, nuts and seeds and whole soy foods like tempeh and tofu.

The Uses of Hemp Seed

The Uses of Hemp Seed

Hemp seeds are one of nature's most wholesome and healthful foods. These seeds, which are produced by a strain of the Cannabis plant, contain all the essential amino acids and fatty acids necessary for healthy human life --- no other plant source possess these essential amino acids in such an easily digestible form or in such an ideal ratio to meet human nutritional needs. Rich in the fatty acids necessary for human nutrition, as well as the omega-3s GLA, ALA and DHA, which promote healthy brain and eyesight development and a lower risk for cardiovascular disease, hemp seeds are used worldwide to treat malnutrition and heal illnesses.

Hemp Seeds Possess High Nutritional Value

Hemp seeds are as complete a source of protein as this steak.
Hemp seeds are as complete a source of protein as this steak.

The nutrient rich seeds of hemp contain all eight essential acids, making them a complete protein, like meat, milk, eggs, and soy. Hemp seeds, however, unlike these other sources of complete protein, require fewer resources to produce and are in a more digestible form. Hemp seeds, for these reasons, are used worldwide to treat malnutrition --- Udo Erasmus, Ph.D., author of "Fats that Heal, Fats that Kill," writes that just one pound of hemp seeds can sustain human life for two weeks.

The human body requires essential fatty acids for health but cannot produce them internally, so it's important to include them in your diet. These fatty acids affect brain and cellular function, inflammation, mood and behavior, as well transferring oxygen to cells. Eating just one tablespoon of hemp seeds every day provides the recommended daily allowance of essential fatty acids.

Hemp Seeds Treat a Variety of Ailments

According to Erasmus, the essential fatty acids in hemp seeds help lubricate membranes and eliminate wastes such as lactic acid in muscles after exercise. They optimize brain function, improve mood, fight depression, help reverse irritability caused by PMS, reduce behavior problems in children, help the body's immune system fight off bacteria, fungi and viruses, such as malaria, lower cholesterol and protect heart health. Hemp seeds, eaten over time, can heal and moisturize skin as well as reduce inflammation. In addition, the essential fatty acids in hemp seeds have anti-cancer properties important for inhibiting tumor growth.

The mineral-rich husk of the hemp seed is often removed from commercially packaged seeds, but the husk provides a good source of calcium, iron, phosphorus, manganese, magnesium and zinc, as well as vitamins A, B, D and K. The husks of the seeds are also very high in soluble and insoluble fiber, which are vital for improving digestion and warding off constipation and hemorrhoids.

Some Ways to Include Hemp Seeds in Your Diet

Hemp seed oil can be used in baked goods.
Hemp seed oil can be used in baked goods.

A cup of hemp seeds blended with four cups of water makes hemp milk, a nondairy nutritional beverage that is delicious when chilled. Raw or ground hemp seeds can be used in salads, smoothies, cereals and baked goods, to which they impart a pleasing nutty flavor. Hemp seeds are also made into a nut butter similar to peanut butter. Using just hempseed oil is useful in fat-based products such as salad dressing or in any product for which fat is an ingredient, such as desserts or baked goods.

Eco-Friendly Ways Hemp Seeds Can Be Used

Hemp seeds can offer a viable and inexpensive alternative to hazardous products. Hemp oil provides a substitute for substances with an oil base and can be used to make nontoxic environmentally friendly paints, varnishes and inks. Hemp seed can also be made into ecofriendly plastics that are biodegradable, which helps to protect the environment.

Hemp seed oil can be used for fuel --- in fact, the first Ford automobile was produced using 70 percent hemp plastics and ran on vegetable oil, including hemp seed oil, a practice that ended when the Marijuana Tax of 1937 was passed. Hemp seeds remain a promising source of bioenergy --- hemp grows more quickly than crops like sugarcane or corn, and every acre of hemp can yield 1,000 gallons of methanol.

About Water Retention

About Water Retention

Water retention, also known as edema, is an uncomfortable condition that stems from the presence of too much water entering and remaining in the soft tissues of the body. While water retention can occur due to a variety of common reasons that may have little to no long term damage on the systemics of the body, there are some situations that can require immediate medical attention. Therefore, understanding the cycle of circumstances that can cause water retention is important in maintaining overall health and wellness.

Identification

The presence of water retention in the body can cause stomach swelling or bloating, along with considerable changes in weight. When swelling is associated with the abdomen area, breathing trouble can also occur due to excess pressure on the diaphragm. In extreme cases involving the limbs, the skin that surrounds the swollen area can stretch and take on a shiny appearance, tearing and ulcerating due to the intense pressure. In pulmonary edema, the area encompassing the heart fills with water resulting in serious cardiac risks.

Prevention/Solution

Any number of medical conditions can lead to water retention, most notably heart disease, kidney disease, and thyroid problems. All of these require the use of medications to control and eliminate the threat of dangerous drowning of the soft tissue. Menstrual periods and pregnancy are also associated with water retention, which can be controlled through improved dietary changes and exercise. An important factor in the prevention of excess water retention is the monitoring of salt intake. Switching to a low-salt diet, or eliminating salt all together can have positive results in reducing body weight caused by the retention of fluids as well as, swelling of the limbs and abdomen.

Warning

The swelling and discomfort that are caused by fluid retention can send some to their medicine cabinets in search of diuretics to reduce the excess water. Unfortunately, this method of treating water retention falls short of curing the problem. As a matter of fact, the use of diuretics can make a bad situation even worse. The loss of sodium that is encouraged with diuretics also carries with it a loss of water and precious minerals that are important to the body. This scenario can lead to additional nutritionally based problems and dehydration. Therefore a change in eating habits and exercise are favored in place of the use of diuretics, except in extreme circumstances which involve cardiac concerns.

Misconceptions

Among the misconceptions concerning water retention is the belief that adding more water to one's diet will cause further bloating. This is absolutely untrue. In fact, one of the best ways to reduce excess water in the soft tissue areas of the body is to drink even more water than normal. The body will begin to store water when the metabolism feels threatened or in danger of dehydration, and if you are not drinking enough you will begin to retain it. Drinking at least two liters of water a day will help the body reduce the amount that it stores, and even help you to drop a few pounds.

Theories/Speculation

Although there has been a strong focus on dietary changes that may reduce the risk of water retention, combined with exercise and the administering of medication in severe cases, further research has theorized that homeopathic remedies may also reduce risks. Bananas have been shown to combat the body's storage of water by introducing potassium into the system, which blocks excess water from entering the soft tissue of the body. The intake of cranberry juice and cabbage are also said to have the same effect. Eating a daily serving of yogurt releases active cultures that protect the gastrointestinal system, and also helps the body to resist the need to store water and reduce bloating.
